DAVID SCHNEUER (1905 - 1988) Although born in 1905 in Galicia, Poland, David Schneuer’s family emigrated to Munich early in his childhood. It was a challenge for a young Jewish boy to grow up in an environment where anti-Semitism was present long before the terrible events leading up to WW II. Upon graduation from school, he moved to Paris where he associated with many artists whose works helped to define the Expressionist movement. Simultaneously, the advertising age exploded as many artists like Toulouse Lautrec paved the way for illustrative arts. The imagery of color print lithographs plastered the city and inspired Schneuer greatly. While living in Paris, Schneuer ran out of money quickly and ended up residing in the more affordable red light district. It was here that many influential scenes stamped themselves on his mind for perpetual reflection. The gritty beauty of the street, the battered glory of the prostitutes, the populated cafes and bistros and the diverse sampling of humanity animated the neighborhoods he called home. Although only there for a year, this milieu would make an everlasting impression in his work; art that depicts this time and its fellow inhabitants via an authentic and experiential relationship unlike the many artists who would paint these same images later with a romanticized and nostalgic brush but lacking any real perspective. Eventually, Schneuer returned to Munich and joined the staff of Muenchener Schauspielhaus, the great theater house. He collaborated with such influential theatrical figures as Brecht in producing numerous posters. His theater work motifs, exuberant and sensuous characters drawn with virtuosity and refined in subtle colors, also became the signature foundations for his paintings. Because of his involvement with creating the promotional work for the original performance of The Three Penny Opera amongst other politically tinged productions of the time, he was part of the theater’s group arrested and imprisoned in Dachau as cultural revolutionaries by Hitler’s forces in 1933. After his release, Schneuer emigrated to Palestine and settled in Tel Aviv, where he became immersed in painting. His canvases were populated with stylized figures that inhabited the 1920s Paris of his memory. Although he was enjoying a personal renaissance of his practice, there was not an appreciation for art in Israel at the time and his main income stemmed from odd jobs painting on ships, in bars and maybe the occasional logo for a business.

David Schneuer, 1928 Finally, in the 1960s one publisher noted that unlike all other known artists of the time who were creating works distraught with the dreary realities of a post-World War mentality, Schneuer was delivering a breath of fresh air with his prolific memories of a short time in Paris. They began to publish the works and distribute them as fine prints the world over to much commercial success. Even though Schneuer was Jewish, he felt like a stranger in Israel and never connected to the art scene there. While his Fine Prints were sold internationally he never exhibited his originals during his lifetime. It wasn’t until after his death in 1988 when Schneuer’s estate of original work was uncovered, revealing the thousands of stunning works on paper, which laid the foundation for his prints, that the artist began to receive much deserved museum and gallery attention.

David Schneuer’s fine prints were largely produced as serigraphs, known as the artistic version of the traditional screen print. This particular technique known for its ability to articulate a multicolored image through finely honed screen stencils was very complementary to the artist’s methods, allowing the prints to retain the true character and original integrity of the work. Most of his original work was created to capture ideas for possible future fine prints. Occasionally we find numerous variations of the same theme, which indicates that he was getting closer to the final version that he would present to the printer as a guideline to work on the frames for the serigraphs. In this exhibition we have three extremely rare examples of the fine print and the corresponding original. Schneuer was extremely successful with his fine prints during his lifetime and they were sold quite literally all over the world, from Japan, Europe, the United States and Israel.

CHRISTIAN HOHMANN FINE ART represents

almost 40 years of lineage in the art world by the Hart/Hohmann family founded in Germany and in 2013 Christian Hohmann celebrated his 20 year anniversary of entering the professional art world. Christian’s parents Werner and Ursula opened their first gallery in 1976 in the cultural tourist destination of Walsrode, which quickly became a success attracting cosmopolitan visitors from all over the world. In 1998, his aunt Eva Hart ventured to the States and opened a gallery in Carmel by the Sea, a premiere address for the California fine art world. She introduced art collectors to the best European contemporary artists, a relatively untapped market in the area, and one in which was found a thriving market. Only two years later the Hart family opened another location in the heart of Chicago. Back in Germany, 19-year old Christian was honing his own career by studying Art History and Economy at the University of Trier. In 1993, just a month before he began his studies, he founded Kunstverlag Christian Hohmann, a company that would publish lithographs, etchings and serigraphs by several artists, among them the acclaimed artist Prof. Rudolf Hausner, an important representative of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism. Two years later he opened his first gallery in Hamburg at 21. In 1998 he partnered up with Thomas Levy, one of Germany’s premier art dealers and gallery owners, to open a gallery villa in Hamburg-Poeseldorf. The gallery highlighted artists such as Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Francis Bacon, and Xenia Hausner and participated in art expos including Art Frankfurt and the prestigious Hamburg Photo Triennale. Three years later, Hohmann collaborated on a project gallery in Berlin-Mitte. In 2002 Eva Hart decided to open a flagship gallery in Palm Desert, CA. Located on the exclusive El Paseo Drive in the renowned playground for the Forbes 400, the gallery played host to visitors from all over the world looking for paradise weather, perfect golf and tennis and world-class art. Christian joined his aunt as gallery director and went on to facilitate stellar exhibitions from modern classics like Joan Miró, Chagall, and Gabriele Muenter to contemporary artists such as Paul Wunderlich, Eberhard Hückstädt and Karin Voelker. In the summer of 2009, the Harts retired and Christian decided to carry on the family tradition solo with a new 5,000 square foot signature space, also located on El Paseo Drive. Today, Christian Hohmann Fine Art reflects this rich legacy in the art world, which began in Germany in 1976, and now spans across the United States. With a longstanding tradition of presenting both European and national artists of the highest

caliber to the discerning collector, the gallery’s strong figurative program is accentuated by diverse offerings in 20th century master works by both familiar and emerging names. The gallery features an exquisite selection of original paintings and sculpture by over 100 unique artists while also representing many artists’ estates. From the prestigious location on El Paseo and with a network of artists, collectors, galleries and institutions the gallery has built a strong internet presence that reaches far beyond the borders of the United States. By participating in art fairs across the US and by publishing books and catalogs, the gallery is trying to spread the word about their artists world wide. With a true passion for art, educating the client, and a devotion to its artists, the gallery has garnered a world-class reputation as a sophisticated destination for art.
