SIEGFRIED NEUENHAUSEN
German artist Siegfried Neuenhausen has mastered the role of presenting life’s eternally sublime theater through the sculptural form. His sculptures, representative of the common man, weave together the myriad inherencies of the human condition through individual glimpses at circumstance, often tinged with the ironic, complex or idiosyncratic. Consideration of one piece oftentimes leads to an overall sense that we are “all in this together”, thus perpetuating the work’s universal relativity and conversation starter status. Figurative in nature, and defined by the genre of critical realism, the sculptures invite us into the world of our own human foible therefore allowing us, with a wink and a bow, to relate to the universal themes of everyday existence.

His work is part of several major museum collections in Germany and throughout Europe, including the National Museums in Berlin, Munich and Vienna. For his work in therapeutic art, Neuenhausen was awarded the highest Medal of Honor to be given to contemporary artists by the German Minister of Cultural Affairs. Since the 1960’s, the sculptor Siegfried Neuenhausen has been known through his many exhibitions and his creations for the public domain as an artist who has been observing and commenting on the spirit of our time. With his themes the artist takes a critical look at people, their actions and their compulsions. He is one of the most distinguished representatives of Critical Realism. In addition to having been a Professor at the University of Art in Braunschweig for thirty years, Neuenhausen has been a facilitator of creative projects for several major groups. With sculpture projects in prisons, psychiatric clinics and senior citizens’ homes, Neuenhausen has enabled amateurs to tap into their creative talents.

THE HUMAN CONDITION Siegfried Neuenhausen is both a sculptor and a painter. The central theme in his work is and always has been “man”. During the seventies, Neuenhausen worked in life size sculpture made from wood. Then he discovered that the “small form” in limited edition bronze makes it possible to reach a much larger audience. Neuenhausen is not concerned about the obvious aesthetics of the form or about the pleasingly smooth and beautiful tradition of bronze, but more about the fundamental gestures of humanity and the unerring depiction of life’s situations. His work could be categorized as “critical realism”. This genre dispenses with any semblance of naturalism and avoids any finicky or fussy details. On this small scale he compresses the sensitivities of human beings, contemplations about you and me, about relationships between people, communication, pleasures, weaknesses, inadequacies. Neuenhausen carefully examines and observes what affects us all. How we point at each other, how we carry our burdens (houses) our prejudices, idiosyncrasies and habits around with us wherever we go. He contemplates the uncertainties of life (stairs leading to no-where); it’s ironies and complexities. In Neuenhausen sculptures we can recognize ourselves as well as our fellow man, our precious habits and quirks. The great aspect of these small sculptures is that you can have them with you wherever and whenever you want. “The Man on the Mountain” on your desk to remind you that once you get to the top you better have a way down, the little fat “Woman Looking In Mirror” for your bathroom to remind you that the original Venus was considered a great beauty, the “Man With Cage” by your telephone to remind you not to create a prison for yourself, the “Two Men Pointing” at each other in the Lawyers office, the “Man With House” in the realtor’s office, etc. One will not want to be without these little partners in dialogue any longer. The haptic charm of these bronzes seduces us to take them in our hands and perform a world-theater of our own. Neuenhausen is a quiet, genial man. Through his many years of teaching and helping people in all walks of life he has garnered a great deal of wisdom, a sense of the ironic, cynicism, humor and compassion for the human condition.

SMALL BRONZES An Artist Statement

The small bronze sculptures are part of a unified group that since 1979 has emerged from paintings, sculptures and prints. They are in large part linked to experiences in the extensive sculpture projects in Bremen area prisons and psychiatric clinics. The subjects are people, their problems and how people are affected by their challenges. The theme of “work” is examined throughout the body of work. Man with Cage, Man at the Summit, Homage to Orwell – the small bronzes are, so it seems, sculptural “psychographs”. They represent sculptural formations of fundamental human situations that touch us all. Most bronzes from this series are cast in bronze in stricly limited edition sizes of approximately 50 to 150.

ABOUT THE GALLERY CHRISTIAN HOHMANN | FINE ART represents over thirty years of lineage in the art world by the Hart/Hohmann family founded in Germany. Director Christian Hohmann’s parents Werner and Ursula opened their first gallery in 1976 in the cultural tourist destination of Walsrode, which quickly became a success attracting cosmopolitan visitors from all over the world. In 1998, his aunt Eva Hart ventured to the States and opened a gallery in Carmel by the Sea, a premiere address for the California fine art world. She introduced art collectors to the best European contemporary artists, a relatively untapped market in the area, and one in which was found a thriving market. Only two years later the Hart family opened another location in the heart of Chicago. Back in Germany, 19-year old Christian was honing his own career by studying Art History and Economy at the University of Trier. He also spent time working with acclaimed artist Prof. Rudolf Hausner, an important representative of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism, to publish several important Fine Art Prints. Two years later he opened his first gallery in Hamburg at 21. In 1998 he partnered up with Thomas Levy, one of Germany’s premier art dealers and gallery owners, to open a gallery villa in Hamburg-Poeseldorf. The gallery highlighted artists such as Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Francis Bacon, and Xenia Hausner and participated in art expos including Art Frankfurt and the prestigious Hamburg Photo Triennale. Three years later, Hohmann collaborated on a project gallery in Berlin-Mitte. In 2002 Eva Hart decided to open a flagship gallery in Palm Desert, CA. Located on the exclusive El Paseo Drive in the renowned playground for the Forbes 400, the gallery played host to visitors from all over the world looking for paradise
weather, perfect golf and tennis and world-class art. Christian joined his aunt as gallery director and went on to facilitate stellar exhibitions from modern classics like Joan Miro, Chagall, and Gabriele Muenter to contemporary artists such as Paul Wunderlich, Eberhard Hückstädt and Karin Voelker. In the summer of 2009, the Harts retired and Christian decided to carry on the family tradition solo with a new 5,000 square feet signature space, also located on El Paseo Drive. Today, Christian Hohmann Fine Art reflects this rich legacy in the art world, which began in Germany over 30 years ago, and now spans across the United States. With a longstanding tradition of presenting both European and national artists of the highest caliber to the discerning collector, the gallery’s strong figurative program is accentuated by diverse offerings in 20th century master works by both familiar and emerging names.
