HEINER MEYER German Pop Artist Heiner Meyer has been delivering us freeze-frame glimpses of our national consumer psyche for nearly forty years. In this collection of new works, he presents an unbiased, outsider’s view of American Pop Culture through dynamic paintings combining the influential imagery of our lives. Unlike the Pop Art movement, which focused on the individual everyday object, Meyer’s work highlights the stream of juxtaposing visuals fed into our lives daily from the past and the present, which reflect upon who we are. In his paintings, these images show up together through people and objects, seemingly chosen at random from the encyclopedic stream of the communal psyche’s visual feed. This feed, accumulated from a myriad of ever-present information portals from the television screen to the glossy magazine spread to the cinematic stage to the multimedia advertisement to the high speed internet site, is constantly imprinting upon us. Meyer’s paintings present a glimpse of any moment in time within that stream and the images both personal and non-personal that appear in that particular moment. Pin up girls pose next to Mickey Mouse while socialite stars like Paris Hilton transpose against glamorous icons like Marilyn Monroe, leading us to draw our own conclusions based on individual perspective and personae. Flashy cars, the metallic glint of money, haute couture, the latest sought after product, and our celluloid heroes all show up to place us in our contemporary environment.

Rapid information in a hurried world becomes highlighted upon individual canvas, lacking judgment or socio-political statement, expressed in candycolored, exquisitely detailed and illustrious paintings. From his early years as an artist, in which he was an assistant to Salvador Dali, to his recent achievement of being honored as the opening exhibition artist for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Giessen, Germany, Meyer has stayed true to his voice. Although the visuals continue to change, running through the annals of historical through present day culture, it has remained the consistent responsibility of the viewer to laden the visuals with any inner meaning, value, or consideration based on their personal experience, attitude and place within the paintings’ contexts. In recent years, Meyer has emerged as one of Germany’s most important Pop artists. Today, his work is shown in galleries and museums around the world and has been acquired in many important private and institutional collections. Over 30 books and catalogs have been published about his work.

Seeing is a process of constant selection which enables us to orient ourselves amidst an explosion of images. Thus, commercial adverts rely on repetition and pointed signals to prevent their products from falling into oblivion. In our age of images, art has long since successfully adapted the promotion strategies of the media industry. Art became strategy. Looking back, it was the pop art movement which first used the language or commercials intentionally. In an almost self-reflexive way it mirrored the manipulative spin on the material world promoted then (as now) by the consumer industry. In this context, art willingly imitated the well meant commercial glamour-aesthetics. After all, this drew the attention to art itself. What was created by relying consequently on commercial methods was a new subject of art. Its method was simultaneously its means and its goal. Thus, American art after 1950 was “only” a reaction to its age. In those days, society was defined in terms of Big Business, skyscrapers, the car industry, Hollywood and Jazz. America’s high hopes were later tempered by bitter and sad experience which at this point I do not wish to focus on.

These glimpses of America’s 50s and 60s will help us to understand Heiner Meyer’s exhibition. Similar to Robert Rauschcnberg’s art, the German artist refers to quotations of the American reality. These references are manifested mainly in the revival of Hollywood’s most popular and unforgettable stars of that age. By now, these stars have become icons, which still seem to have enough “glamour” to illuminate even the next 100 years. Their faces attract attention to Heiner Meyer’s art, particularly as this focus corresponds with the current zeitgeist. This retrospection works since our time demands cult figures and nostalgia. Thus, in Meyer’s art, we encounter stars like Audrey Hepburn, Jackie Kennedy, Liz Taylor, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Elvis Presley, Mickey Mouse and Marilyn Monroe. Today, the latter is not just one of the most popular representatives of the American cinema . Marilyn Monroe is a myth, film diva and sex-symbol. She reappears on stage in one set of Meyer’s works. And again we are enchanted by her b right smile and by her-charming sensual presence. Her legend is confirmed by Meyer’s selection of photographs. She was one of the most colorful and outstanding Hollywood-goddesses, the classic sex-symbol of film history. Meyer is aware of how this myth was created, And by addressing it he makes this process even more explicit. He integrates photos of his stars directly into his works, so that we can trace the process of cliché creation. But Meyer goes one step further. He adds images of the American commercial industry. In a collage-like style, he uses erotic signals or integrates elements of gambling and dice games as well as famous product labels. Thus, Meyer creates a sense of wholeness with numerous references to the real world . This still is not enough for him. On the technical level, parts of his works are painted over or treated with shellac. That way, single characters in Meyer’s works sometimes take on an unusual sepia-brown aura which we know from old photographs. In other cases, elements of his works disappear completely under new layers of paint of are being tarnished, so that we can only infer their presence. ABOUT THE GALLERY CHRISTIAN HOHMANN | FINE ART represents over thirty years of lineage in the art world by the Hart/Hohmann family founded in Germany. Director Christian Hohmann’s parents Werner and Ursula opened their first gallery in 1976 in the cultural tourist destination of Walsrode, which quickly became a success attracting cosmopolitan visitors from all over the world. In 1998, his aunt Eva Hart ventured to the States and opened a gallery in Carmel by the Sea, a premiere address for the California fine art world. She introduced art collectors to the best European contemporary artists, a relatively untapped market in the area, and one in which was found a thriving market. Only two years later the Hart family opened another location in the heart of Chicago. Back in Germany, 19-year old Christian was honing his own career by studying Art History and Economy at the University of Trier. He also spent time working with acclaimed artist Prof. Rudolf Hausner, an important representative of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism, to publish several important Fine Art Prints. Two years later he opened his first gallery in Hamburg at 21. In 1998 he partnered up with Thomas Levy, one of Germany’s premier art dealers and gallery owners, to open a gallery villa in Hamburg-Poeseldorf. The gallery highlighted artists such as Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Francis Bacon, and Xenia Hausner and participated in art expos including Art Frankfurt and the prestigious Hamburg Photo Triennale. Three years later, Hohmann collaborated on a project gallery in Berlin-Mitte. In 2002 Eva Hart decided to open a flagship gallery in Palm Desert, CA. Located on the exclusive El Paseo Drive in the renowned playground for the Forbes 400, the gallery played host to visitors from all over the world looking for paradise
weather, perfect golf and tennis and world-class art. Christian joined his aunt as gallery director and went on to facilitate stellar exhibitions from modern classics like Joan Miro, Chagall, and Gabriele Muenter to contemporary artists such as Paul Wunderlich, Eberhard Hückstädt and Karin Voelker. In the summer of 2009, the Harts retired and Christian decided to carry on the family tradition solo with a new 5,000 square feet signature space, also located on El Paseo Drive. Today, Christian Hohmann Fine Art reflects this rich legacy in the art world, which began in Germany over 30 years ago, and now spans across the United States. With a longstanding tradition of presenting both European and national artists of the highest caliber to the discerning collector, the gallery’s strong figurative program is accentuated by diverse offerings in 20th century master works by both familiar and emerging names. The gallery features an exquisite selection of original paintings and sculpture by over 60 unique artists while also representing many artists’ estates and publishing books and catalogs of important work.
