Gerd Lieder’s painstakingly composed oil paintings are often coined hyperrealism because of their exquisite photorealistic qualities. But the artist does more than merely present literal depictions of life. He in fact delves further by utilizing the tool of reflection to educe deeper meaning and inspire a double take toward everyday scenes that might otherwise remain mundane. Common circumstances become elevated in surprising ways as his brush bestows color, innuendo, contrast and form to moments captured within surfaces. These moments, glimpsed in transit by Lieder, are documented, pulled from obscurity and delivered in all their spontaneous and surreal glory. Fleeting snapshots arrive from unexpected places: lingering inside a drop of water idling on the trunk of a car, forming a tiny world in a glossy metallic panel of a high-heeled shoe, mysteriously lurking behind prismatic planes of glass, or embedded within a shopkeeper’s window in the form of a woman’s face being refracted back upon itself. The viewer becomes complicit with the artist’s gaze, mining mirrors for the stories within the story. Perspectives refresh, delighted by the shift in looking. These freeze frames of existence become further endowed with meaning through Lieder’s meticulous process, which requires hundreds of hours of inch-by-inch painting rather than a more traditional layering technique. The initial reflection thus becomes reflected anew, only this time informed by solidity and permanence.
