jd Hansen When one delves into the intensely vulnerable process of creation that sculptor jd hansen embarks upon to materialize her distinct, figurative sculptures one gets a glimpse of what makes this young artist so prolific with a voice so singularly profound. Inspired first by a seed in her personal life, the artist employs sketches and notes to explore her initial ideas until a mental portrait of the final vision comes to fruition in her mind. These concepts become further accentuated by her emotional and manual relationship to material where words and images take form as clay, clay becomes wax, and wax alchemizes into bronze. From this process, strong and elegant figures are produced where body language informs the viewer of the artist’s original intent. Every curvature or line conveys meaning in the slight tilt of a head or a lithe stroke of a limb angled in such a way that evokes reverie and relation within the viewer. Viewed from a distance, her work looms confidently, offering a bold and graphic statement. When viewed up close, one is brought in to the impressive intricacies of texture and patina. The dance from paper to sculpture now complete presents a stunning bridge between artist and voyeur. We present you here with an intimate journey through the sculptor’s process; a privileged glimpse at her innermost thoughts weaved through to the final pieces that reflect her signature, consistent style and beautiful mind.

From afar jd hansen’s sculptures weave familiar silhouettes, striking in their simplicity but hinting at something deeper. Upon closer examination, the subtle interplay of body language and texture, angle and emotion emerges. One is encompassed in a peaceful reverie, feeling let in on a private moment bathed in serenity that commandeers space within any environment.
In this work, we see a figure sitting sidesaddle, precariously perched atop a graceful horse. Although wrapped in what seems like stultifying constraints that denote a sense of being bound by expectations of beauty and normalcy, an overall peace and solemnity is evoked. The balance between perfection and frailty teeters within an overarching harmony and rightness.

The complexity cloaked in these simple yet powerful forms is what makes jd’s sculptures a treasure to live with. The way the light hits the bronze at a certain time of day can reveal yet another shade of meaning or interpretation. The shadows cast by these forms can let you see the silhouette in a new way, opening up yet another window into the deeper thoughts and emotions contained within. Take this piece Icarus for example. In the classic story from Greek mythology, Icarus’ ingenuity led him to create wings for himself of feathers and beeswax to escape his fate in prison. But upon his escape he flew too close to the sun, becoming burned and thrown into the sea, the conductor of his own mortality. In jd’s piece, mankind’s eternal struggle to find balance between freedom and limitation can be seen through the battered and beautiful outspread wings.

After a sculpture is created, like “Family Group” above, it is sent to a foundry,
where a rubber mold is made of the original.
Wax is poured into each part of the mold, creating multiple sections of the sculpture. As you can see from the photo, Family Group was poured in 20 different waxes.
Those waxes are dipped into a ceramic solution that creates a hard shell around each wax. The resulting hard shell is called a waste mold.
Imagine the hard shell with the wax inside. The shell is put into an oven where the wax is melted out, creating a void.
The shell is then placed upside down in a vat of sand and molten bronze is poured into each one.
When the bronze cools, the shell is broken off, revealing the bronze. Each of the 20 parts are then welded together to create the final sculpture. Once it’s welded together, the piece is heated and various acids are applied to create a patina. A patina is the final color of the sculpture.

ABOUT THE GALLERY CHRISTIAN HOHMANN | FINE ART represents over thirty years of lineage in the art world by the Hart/Hohmann family founded in Germany. Director Christian Hohmann’s parents Werner and Ursula opened their first gallery in 1976 in the cultural tourist destination of Walsrode, which quickly became a success attracting cosmopolitan visitors from all over the world. In 1998, his aunt Eva Hart ventured to the States and opened a gallery in Carmel by the Sea, a premiere address for the California fine art world. She introduced art collectors to the best European contemporary artists, a relatively untapped market in the area, and one in which was found a thriving market. Only two years later the Hart family opened another location in the heart of Chicago. Back in Germany, 19-year old Christian was honing his own career by studying Art History and Economy at the University of Trier. He also spent time working with acclaimed artist Prof. Rudolf Hausner, an important representative of the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism, to publish several important Fine Art Prints. Two years later he opened his first gallery in Hamburg at 21. In 1998 he partnered up with Thomas Levy, one of Germany’s premier art dealers and gallery owners, to open a gallery villa in Hamburg-Poeseldorf. The gallery highlighted artists such as Joan Miro, Marc Chagall, Francis Bacon, and Xenia Hausner and participated in art expos including Art Frankfurt and the prestigious Hamburg Photo Triennale. Three years later, Hohmann collaborated on a project gallery in Berlin-Mitte. In 2002 Eva Hart decided to open a flagship gallery in Palm Desert, CA. Located on the exclusive El Paseo Drive in the renowned playground for the Forbes 400, the gallery played host to visitors from all over the world looking for paradise
weather, perfect golf and tennis and world-class art. Christian joined his aunt as gallery director and went on to facilitate stellar exhibitions from modern classics like Joan Miro, Chagall, and Gabriele Muenter to contemporary artists such as Paul Wunderlich, Eberhard Hückstädt and Karin Voelker. In the summer of 2009, the Harts retired and Christian decided to carry on the family tradition solo with a new 5,000 square feet signature space, also located on El Paseo Drive. Today, Christian Hohmann Fine Art reflects this rich legacy in the art world, which began in Germany over 30 years ago, and now spans across the United States. With a longstanding tradition of presenting both European and national artists of the highest caliber to the discerning collector, the gallery’s strong figurative program is accentuated by diverse offerings in 20th century master works by both familiar and emerging names. The gallery features an exquisite selection of original paintings and sculpture by over 60 unique artists while also representing many artists’ estates and publishing books and catalogs of important work.
