ROBERT DUNAHAY

Artist Robert Dunahay is a master of paint. His technical prowess with the classic medium spans a multilayered and complex oeuvre of paintings in which he reveals its characteristics and potentialities of form, texture, plane and color vividly and with a precision honed from decades of experience. Whether exploring the sensual intricacy of fabric through subtle gradients of hue; painstakingly brushing miniature, saturated strokes into a bold background to showcase a vibrant tangle of palm fronds; or experimenting with reflective and metallic tones to evoke the prismatic in life, Dunahay’s work cuts a dynamic swath through the contemporary art lexicon.

BAHAMA | Oil on Canvas | 66” x 60” | 2012

In the “Victory” series, commonly known as the “Palm Tree” series, a universal symbol of victory, the palm frond, is given iconic status by its placement on striking color fields. In homage to traditional portraiture, each subject becomes elevated beyond its everyday existence, individualized and memorialized on the pedestal of canvas. DUNAHAY ON PALMS 18

I am drawn to the palm for its strong positive symbolism. For most of us, palm trees are an important element in the landscape of our perfect vacation. They are a simple reminder that life is good. In these paintings, I use color to enhance the exoticness that is already inherent in palm trees. The “face to face” composition provides the viewer with an intimate opportunity to observe the palm tree much as they would a portrait of a person. By replacing traditional references to landscape with a solid color background, the palm becomes iconic, transcending nature to become an alluring ideal palm. My goal is to engage the viewer in a way that allows them to experience the palm rather than to render a specific tree. Robert Dunahay
