Call for Proposals Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice at Hofstra University Faculty Summer Research Grant 2024 The Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice seeks proposals from full- and part-time Hofstra University faculty members for its annual Faculty Summer Research Grant. The Center’s mission is to promote scholarship and research among interdisciplinary faculty. Applications are welcomed for research and creative projects in any discipline or subject that use race or social justice as central categories of analysis, and which promise to enrich the academic curriculum at Hofstra. Two successful recipients will receive a stipend of $1,500. The grant seeks three specific outcomes: a) The development of a new undergraduate or graduate course, or the enrichment of an existing course. Course proposals many be based within any department but should be suitable for cross-listing with programs such as Africana Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, or other relevant interdisciplinary or area studies on campus. b) A lecture or workshop for students, faculty, staff, and administrators at Hofstra University, heightening our understanding of racial, social justice and cultural issues relevant to the university community, to be delivered during the academic year 2024-2025. c) The successful grant recipients are expected to submit the work for publication to a peerreviewed scholarly journal, to have submitted a book proposal, or to disseminate their production via other means, within one year. The final publication or product should acknowledge the support of the Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice. Grant proposals are due on May 1, 2024. The grant recipient will be informed of the decision before May 31, 2024, and the funds will be available immediately. Proposals should not exceed 2,000 words in length, including references, and should include the following: a) A project description, highlighting relevance for questions of race or social justice. b) An explanation of how the project will lead to a new undergraduate or graduate course, or enrich an existing course. c) Plans for publication, production or dissemination. The Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice will have all proposals received evaluated by a committee established from among the members of the Center’s Advisory Board.
