Decellularized Plants and Cross-linked Gelatin for Vascular Repair 1 1 Nicole Gorbenko , Nick Merna 1School of Engineering and Applied Science, Hofstra University

Results

Introduction

• 2mm grafts were created using gelatin, glutaraldehyde, acrylic rod, and decellularized leaf

• Over 95% of DNA removal was measured • Leatherleaf has highest elastic modulus 16

Elastic Modulus (MPa)

• Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the United States • Lack of autologous vessels creates a demand for naturally or synthetically derived vascular grafts • Small diameter vascular grafts have been developed to replace complete or partially blocked vessels • <6mm diameter grafts have not been successfully developed using a synthetic material • 2mm graft was developed with the use of natural materials

Methods • Leatherleaf viburnum was decellularized using SDS and clearing solution (0.1% Triton X-100 and 10% bleach in deionized water)

Endothelialization Of Leaves • Rat aortic endothelial cells seeded onto decellularized leaves showed good viability and adhesion within the first five days • Cell seeding density and coverage was optimized to provide full coverage
