When you think of food and travel, what do you imagine? Comfort, family, and freedom? Or perhaps, danger, hesitation, and caution? With travel restrictions being lifted, airports and highways are packed with travelers eager to see friends and family again after a long separation. In airports around the country, I’ve seen the anticipation, and sometimes hesitation, in people’s eyes. At times we are nervous, but also ready to get back to normal. What is your normal? Are you staying more cautious, perhaps planning to venture out in 2022, or have you already taken advantage of businesses opening up again? How will we pursue food and travel in a “post-pandemic” society? Should we continue to be cautious, or hop in the car and go? Regardless of where you stand, the lockdowns of the last year have helped us realize how precious our freedom is.

Many people are not traveling internationally, however, there are lots of places to explore in our own backyard. Many of us got used to cooking at home or ordering takeout during the pandemic, and haven’t had the chance to explore new restaurants. There are hidden gems that survived the shut-down, as well as new restaurants that have popped up since the country started opening up again. Today’s spotlight is Memphis, TN. Home of the Blues, the famous Beale Street, Peabody Hotel, Elvis’ mansion, the Bass Pro Shop, Orpheum Theater, and much more. If you have never visited this historical city, why not add it to the list? Although it would be impossible to see everything during your next three-day weekend, but if you love culture, music, or food, there are a few pit-stops you don’t want to miss. Each place is sure to impress during your next trip to Memphis, TN. A few excellent experiences during your Memphis vacation would have to include the National Civil Rights Museum, Memphis in May, and last, but not least, Memphis barbeque. Having taken multiple trips to this historic site, my heart grieves for our nation and the history we share. The story of African Americans in the US and Martin Luther King, Jr. is beautifully storied, leaving one spellbound, caught up in numerous details of thousands of stories inside its walls. A journey through the twists and turns of this place may leave you in tears, or in awe at the horrors of our past and the beauty of a long journey to freedom. Beginning with African history and ending at the site of MLK’s famous last days is the experience of a lifetime. While the Lorraine Motel is open year-round, if you’re planning to stop in Memphis early 2022, Memphis in May is your destination for music, food, and culture. With multiple festivals throughout the month, there is something planned for everyone next year. Keep on the lookout for the Beale Street Music Festival, the Great American River Run, International Salute to Ghana, and the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest. There’s one thing people in the USA seem to be passionate about: how to cook their BBQ. Although there are several major styles across the US, Memphis is famously known for its dry rub and slow roasted pork with sweet and spicy tomato-based sauces. With dozens of Memphis restaurants serving up delicious items like juicy pulled pork sandwiches, smoked chicken wings, and even barbeque spaghetti, natives and visitors cannot get enough. Be sure to plan a stop at one of Memphis’ famous barbeque joints like Corky’s Ribs & BBQ, Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous, Blues City Cafe, Interstate Barbeque, Central BBQ, Leonard’s Pit Barbeque, Marlowe’s Ribs & Restaurant, and more. Going through a global pandemic has caused us to stop and think about what opportunities we have, and how long they will last. If you miss food and travel as much as I do, start imagining. Make a list. Whether you decide to try the new sandwich at the corner grocery or fly across the country, begin to explore this brave new world.
