LETTER from THE PUBLISHER

The Role of Local Media & Community Accountability Free publications are a big part of our community. We know that residents enjoy consuming our magazine, as well as other free local publications, but because they do not subscribe, it is easy for people to unwittingly take them for granted. The District 86 facilities referendum saga represented probably the most significant event of the last decade in our community. A number of readers in Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Oak Brook and Burr Ridge turned to free publications Hinsdale Magazine, The Hinsdalean and The Clarendon Courier for news and information about the referendum and the district in general. Hinsdale Magazine’s exclusive interview with superintendent Dr. Bruce Law in February and March garnered thousands of views both in print and online; and we were not afraid to put tough questions to him, because we knew what was at stake for our community. But imagine for a moment if publications like ours did not exist. If you don’t subscribe to The Doings, where would you turn for information about vital issues like the referendum? And where would our residents who are not as technologically savvy turn? In times like these, readers should hold the local publications they receive accountable for what they cover—whether you subscribe to them or not. Because if you don’t, the next time a topic like the D86 referendum rolls around, you may not approve of the options you have available. While we have quality newspapers doing the work each week, Hinsdale Magazine offers a balanced view of Hinsdale and

neighboring towns each month. Hinsdale Magazine committed to cover the intense conversation of the referendum, knowing we would receive negative and positive feedback from our readers—and we did, but mostly a thank-you for doing our job. Not too long ago, a compliment came from a local resident, business owner and advertiser: “Scott, I always look forward to reading your magazine, because I never know what might appear on the cover. The covers are never predictable!” I thanked the gentlemen and replied, “Thank you; I don’t’ know what will be on the cover either—until the story presents itself.” This summer will mark the eighth anniversary of the founding of Hinsdale Magazine, the area’s first lifestyle and news-magazine, and our staff will continue to serve you with substantive content. We listen to our readers in Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Clarendon Hills and Oak Brook, who receive the magazine in the mailbox. Furthermore, you have resoundingly voted “yes” to our content direction with nearly one million online impressions since we added the digital magazine in 2014. For that reason, we recognize the responsibility of delivering content that is meaningful to you. We call that accountability.

Our smiles are more important than ever. But we’re not interested in cookie-cutter, piano key teeth— we want grins that truly represent who we are. How can you make over your smile without losing any personality, or harming your teeth in any way? Enter esthetic dentistry. This burgeoning concept is beginning to rule the dentist’s office – to the delight of both patients and dentists. Within this new realm, dental work is both beautiful and functionoriented. Dr. Peter Harnois of Hinsdale Dentistry elaborates on how to get the best of both dental worlds.

PETER T. HARNOIS, DDS

changes to the appearance of their front teeth. But it neglects to consider the full effects that treatment might have on the patient’s health. In this way, cosmetic dentistry is treatment that improves a smile’s appearance alone. Esthetic dentistry has a different focus: to improve a smile’s function, enhancing its appearance along the way. This type of treatment offers visual and physical benefits – something that patients really appreciate. The results are noticeable superficially, but extend deeper. For this reason, more and more dentists are looking toward esthetic practices.

AS A DENTIST AND AN EDUCATOR, HOW HAVE YOU EMBRACED ESTHETICS?

I’ve been practicing esthetic dentistry since 1990, and have made a commitment to educating other dentists on this branch of treatment. I’m proud to lecture internationally in over 30 cities per year, training hundreds of dentists to place minimally invasive veneers. My depth and breadth of experience, including a decade of educating dentists through hands-on veneer prep, make me a sought-after lecturer across the country.

I am currently in the process of becoming accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the most prestigious education body for esthetic dentistry in North America. Additionally, I am proud to be:

WHICH PATIENTS ARE CANDIDATES FOR LUMINEERS TREATMENT? If you have highly sensitive teeth, or experience anxiety at the thought of dental treatment, MPVs are the answer. Not only are you able to avoid shots of anesthetic and the dental drill, the veneers actually cover patches of weakened enamel, leading to a reduction in sensitivity. Whether you’re interested in permanent whitening, straightening your front teeth, strengthening worn or small teeth, covering cracks or chips, or making any subtle tweaks to the appearance of your smile, Lumineers will deliver.

The Main idea LOCAL CHILDREN’S AUTHOR TRACIE MAIN BY MIKE ELLIS

A

local children’s author and mother of two is rolling out her second book this summer. Tracie Main of Hinsdale never imagined she would be writing children’s books, but after publishing her first—Johnny’s Mommy’s Magic Words—last year, she discovered that it combined several of her passions: writing, acting and motherhood. A native of southwest suburban Palos Park, Main was the youngest of five children and daughter of John Amico, a “hair industry leader and educator.” “Growing up, he had multiple salons and beauty schools; so I would spend my days in the salons,” she said. “I’d either be working in the salons or working in the home office.” Despite her early acquaintance with hair, Main said she never planned to be a stylist, having discovered an interest in acting from a young age. In sixth grade, Main auditioned for the titular role in Annie, and got the part. “And then the rest was history; I was hooked,” she said. Main performed in numerous plays and musicals throughout junior high and high school at Stagg, before proceeding to study theatre at the University of Iowa. Upon graduating from college, she briefly returned to Chicago, and then moved out to southern California to pursue a professional acting career. Main’s acting highlights included a guest role on the CBS soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, as well as appearances in several independent films and television commercials. At the age of 26, she elected to return to Chicago to be closer to her family, still having the option to be flown out for acting auditions in New York or Los Angeles. She began dating Bill Main, who she had met at Iowa years beforehand, and the two eventually married, and moved out to Hinsdale in 2010. During her acting career, Main wrote regularly as a hobby. “In between auditioning, I was on my computer writing,” she said. “I have a box in my attic of screenplays, various books—all different things.” Starting in 2015, Main authored a series of parenting columns, “The Balancing Act,” for a pair of local newspapers, The Clarendon Courier and The Western Springs Journal.

22

Hinsdale60521.com | HINSDALE MAGAZINE, INC.

Tracie Main of Hinsdale has published one children’s book, and is preparing to roll out another this summer.

“I had a passion for writing, and so I felt fortunate to be able to have the column,” she said. ... “I really was looking for an outlet; I really loved to write.” In the meantime, she conceived the concept for her first children’s book, Johnny’s Mommy’s Magic Words. The book is derived from a series of “magic words” that Main’s father would have her and her siblings repeat to him each day before school: “I can, I will and I am the greatest.” “It was based off of what I was taught as a kid, that stuck with me,” Main said. Today, Main has carried on the same routine with her boys before dropping them off at Monroe Elementary School. “It’s become like a little routine or ritual that I do with my kids,” she said. Designed to instill confidence in children, the book follows Johnny, a young giraffe, throughout his day, as he experiences various doubts about his intellect and athleticism at school. But the words come to him in a “magical manner,” his doubt is alleviated, and he surpasses the expectations of himself and those around him. “I think it’s really relatable with other kids going through the same situation,” Main said. “In those moments, they can rise above it, simply by saying the magic words.” At the end of the book, Johnny is shown as a father of five children of his own—as Main’s father John Amico was to his family—and he explains how the “magic words” have aided him throughout his life. The book is illustrated by Justo Barrero, who formerly worked for Hallmark, and his illustrations have come to life in the form of plush dolls of the respective characters, furnished through Main’s collaboration with Noah’s Ark Animal Workshop in south suburban Crestwood. “I really wanted an illustrator that could bring the characters to life,” Main said. According to Main, the book can either be purchased independently or with the plush dolls, with children having the opportunity to stuff the dolls

themselves as a “hands-on activity.” But Main’s work is not finished with the first book. Adopting a mission of “helping kids believe in themselves,” she will be introducing a second book, Biddy Squiddy’s Magic Words, this summer, and has plans to release several more. “I have the two books right now, but I have intentions of releasing more books,” Main said. Each book employs a different set of “magic words” or positive selfaffirmations that assist the titular character in overcoming obstacles. “If we can teach our kids, at this young age, these positive words, rather than negative self-talk, it’s going to go a long way,” Main said. In Biddy Squiddy’s Magic Words, the objective is for kids to find courage through the words, “I am brave, and can conquer any wave.” Main said the target age for her books is 3 to 8 years old, and she has already begun visiting some local schools, including Monroe and Ogden Ave. Elementary School in La Grange Park. She will be presenting this month to kindergarteners and first-graders at St. John of the Cross School in Western Springs, sharing her work with them, as well as describing her process as an author. Main’s books may be purchased through Amazon or at Barnes & Noble and other bookstores nationwide. “This is a new thing for me,” she said. “I never imagined that I was going to be a children’s book author; I always imagined I was going to be an [actress]. But as a mom with kids, this just naturally fell upon my lap, and I feel like it’s using all my different talents.” Main sees a connection between her current work and acting, and said she would be open to giving her first passion another try if the right opportunity presented itself. “I feel like doing the author visits, reading the story, I’m bringing the characters to life through my storytelling,” she said. “I do think that is acting.” n

Hinsdale Magazine | Women of Style

ALIX CHESNO Owner of Alixandra Blue

She started out small. I went to boutique nights at St. Issacs for a year, and operated out of my home. I sold chunky sterling-silver jewelry from Mexico. It was authentic and heavy, and it just took off. Then I opened my first store in Hinsdale. That was 14 years ago. Now I have 11 stores around the country—three in Hinsdale, six total in the Chicago area, four in Phoenix and one in Newport, Calif. Tennis was her teacher. I left home when I was 12 to attend a tennis academy in North Carolina, and later in Florida. After that, I played at the University of Arizona for three years before turning pro. I played with Pam Shriver, Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles back in the day. What I learned from that experience is that it’s okay to fail; you learn from your mistakes. You just try to put your best foot forward. She cares about comfort. People say, “Did you always love fashion?” No—I was in sweat-pants most of my life. What I care about is comfort. I don’t wear dresses, so I have this thing about finding comfortable pants for summertime. I love “flow-y” pants, and I think our customers are always looking for that option—something you can dress up at night. You won’t find any crop-tops in her store. I love pushing the envelope, but in a more conservative, midwestern way. My style is always evolving, and that affects what I carry, but it’s always with my customers in mind. Right now we’re carrying a lot of colored denim (think hot pink and bright orange), which was big six years ago and is coming back again. And we’re selling a lot of kimonos, which look great with a tight jean or as a cover-up.

Her sweet spot is gifts. If I hear one time, I hear a million times, “I love having your store. I can always find something unique that looks expensive, but is not expensive, and is wrapped up nice.” We started out as a true accessory store, and we’ve stayed true to our roots with easy gifts like hoop earrings with charms at the bottom for $28.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP KIMONOS, EASY THROW-ON COVERUPS THAT CAN BE DRESSED UP OR DOWN; COLORFUL STATEMENT EARRINGS; EASY FLOW PANTS; NEON, BRIGHT-COLORED DENIM; PLATFORM WEDGES

She’s proud of her staying power. I opened my first store in 2004, and I’m proud that I’m still in business and a go-to place. I’ve survived a recession and the whole online business movement. Today I have more than 60 employees, and their livelihood is important to me. It really does take a village.

MEGAN BROTSCHUL Owner of Hinsdale-based Style Strategy

She’s been a stylist her whole life. My friends and family were always asking me for advice on what to buy, so eventually I thought, “Why not turn this into a business?” Style Strategy was born out of this wish to help clients invest in a chicer version of themselves. I call it a wardrobe enhancement consultation service. Her style icons are busy moms. My fashion influencers are moms who manage to look amazing, while literally balancing it all. So it makes sense that a large chunk of my clients are busy moms with no time to go shopping. My goal is to help them look effortlessly chic without breaking the bank. I help them go through their closets piece by piece, and figure out what works and what they need. She’s a packing guru. I have clients that call me before trips and say, “I’m freaking out; can you come over and help me?” So I’ve incorporated that into my business plan. One of the packages I offer is “suitcase strategy,” where I come over and help you pack for your upcoming trip. Trendy is her pet-peeve. Piling on trend on trend just doesn’t work. I know people are on Instagram and seeing all these different trends, but the best way to incorporate trends is to wear them with some classic pieces. Pair the fashion sneakers with jeans and a T-shirt. Classic is always in fashion. One of the things that every woman should have in her wardrobe is a classic trenchcoat. It’s one of those things that never goes out of style, and you can wear it over anything. A little black dress is great, but a little white dress is classic, but slightly different, and looks great year-round. And a nice investment bag is something you can use 24/7. That said, she follows fashion. I check in on lecatch. com every day to see the various high/low looks she puts together, as well as netaporter.com to see new products, from shoes to blazers to amazing denim. Some of my favorite bloggers include European stylist Iktoria Rader (vikyandthekid), NYC-based stylist The Fashion Guitar, Chicago stylist living in London Juliet Angus (Juliet), and fashionable mom Helena Glazer Hodne (brooklynblonde1). The fun about fashion right now is there’s literally something for everyone. KRISTI SMITH Owner of Sweet William

She’s been in the fashion business her entire career. While I became owner of Sweet William five years ago, I’ve been here for more than 15 years. I managed the store for ten years before I bought it from the original owner Marlene, who founded Sweet William 30 years ago.

She keeps things fresh by rotating which employees accompany her on buying trips. I go on all the buying trips to New York, but I always take someone different. This helps us keep our inventory fresh and exciting, and very specific to what our customers are looking for. After 30 years, we’ve evolved and become more contemporary, and our customers have evolved with us.

High-quality fabric and fit are the secret sauce at Sweet William. Working at Jil Sander taught me about the importance of high-quality fabric, stitching and fit. Our seamstress Renata Madej, who worked with me at Jil Sander, can fix anything and customize any outfit. We don’t charge for alterations.

She’s in the personal styling business. We really get to know our customers. We listen to them, we hear their stories and we know what they like and what would look good on them. Whether they’re 25 or 85, our goal is to make them walk out of here feeling happy about the way they look.

She’s a big fan of Robin Wright’s stylist. I follow Kemal Harris on Instagram. I love her style and the way she dresses Robin as Claire Underwood, and also as herself. While we don’t have one specific type of customer, they’re all very sophisticated, and I think Kemal’s cool and chic taste resonates.

She believes jewelry completes the outfit. Jewelry should be stylist, not conservative. It should finish your outfit. We carry real jewelry—everything from sterling silver to 24-karat gold to diamonds—but it’s all on trend. Probably 30 percent of what we carry is from local designers; the others are from Miami, L.A. and all over the country.

A phone call is all it takes for her to put a gift together.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP DOROTHEE SCHUMACHER SHIRT DRESS WITH A CUBANA PRINT; VERONICA BEARD JACKET; FREDA SALVADOR SNAKE-PRINT SHOE; RENE ESCOBAR BRACELETS; HENRY BEGUELIN LEATHER CROSSBODY

We often have husbands call ahead and say, “It’s my wife’s birthday, and I need something to give her.” So we’ll put together an outfit that we know she’ll love. We do a very detailed, high-end gift-wrapping as well. We also wrap all our gifts special for Mother’s Day, and give a little gift to all our customers who walk in. n HINSDALE MAGAZINE, INC. | Hinsdale60521.com

SURGERY The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is leading the path towards boutique medicine BY KERRIE KENNEDY

I

magine going to a hospital for surgery where there is zero rate of infection, where you receive one-on-one personal care, where your food is catered in from area restaurants and—drum-roll, please—the bill is far less than it would be at a traditional hospital. Luckily, it’s a reality that’s uniquely available to Hinsdale area residents. According to Dr. Carey Templin, a spinal surgeon who has operated at the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery in Mokena since 2009, and who invested in the center in 2011, it is the future of medicine. “There’s been a shift towards outpatient facilities as opposed to hospitals,” Templin said. “The numbers are growing, because of the cost-effectiveness. Patients are paying less, but getting better service.” What makes the center unique is it operates a fivebed hospital, allowing surgeons to do cases like full hip replacements and spinal fusions that would normally be done at a hospital. In addition to the higher prices of a traditional hospital setting, there are other downsides, Templin said. “You never know what the guy next to you in your hospital room has, so you always have to worry about the possibility of infection,” he said. “Because all our rooms are private, we are able to offer quality care with low or non-existent infection rates.” While Templin admits that patients sometimes get leery when they hear surgery center, he said they have everything that the hospital has in order to perform the surgery safely. “We have all the equipment and all the technology,” he said. While not exactly concierge medicine—that involves paying an annual fee or retainer—there are aspects of the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery that are similar to that model (sans the extra cost). “Our model is patient-centered and patientdirected,” Templin said, “which is why our patient satisfaction is so great.” In order for a physician to operate out of the center, they must have a membership as well as hospital affiliations. “Most of the time, a physician works with a patient to determine where they want to go, and what would be the most appropriate setting,” CEO Dawn Knight said. “Typically, the physician drives it.”

“THERE’S BEEN A SHIFT TOWARDS OUTPATIENT FACILITIES AS OPPOSED TO HOSPITALS. THE NUMBERS ARE GROWING, BECAUSE OF THE COSTEFFECTIVENESS. PATIENTS ARE PAYING LESS, BUT GETTING BETTER SERVICE.” —DR. CARY TEMPLIN The center is one of four in the state of Illinois, but it’s the only one in the area that has the unique ability to keep patients overnight. “If you were getting something done like a spinal fusion anywhere else, you’d have to go to the hospital,” Knight said. “Here, we have the unique ability to keep patients an extra day or two if needed. Our rooms are all private, meals are catered and there’s a personalized level of concierge care that we’re able to offer.” While no one looks forward to having surgery, the Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is committed to making the experience not just tolerable, but pleasant. “No one wants to stay in a hospital,” Knight said. “Here, it’s so much more of an elegant process.” n

Ten questions to ask yourself or your partner:

A better night’s sleep COURTESY OF YOUR DENTIST BY KERRIE KENNEDY

Y

ou don’t usually think of your dentist as being on the front-line of your healthcare, but in fact, many diseases and conditions are first recognized in the mouth. One of those conditions—sleep apnea—can not only be detected by your dentist, but it can also be treated by your dentist. Hinsdale Magazine checked in with Dr. Jeff Weller to find out more about sleep apnea. What can sleep apnea do to your health? With sleep apnea, you have an obstructed airway not getting oxygen at night, and that affects your heart and your bloodpressure, which can lead to heart disease.

As a dentist, how do you identify sleep apnea? We have a list of questions we go through with patients; we have them fill out a questionnaire. We also look at the condition of their mouth, and look for signs of acid erosion and/or wear or attrition of the teeth—signs potentially caused by sleep apnea. And of course we talk to our patients. Are they aware of themselves snoring? Often, one of the telltale signs of obstructive sleep apnea is very loud and excessive snoring or stoppages in breathing. Snoring is the result of air passing through an obstructed or partially-obstructed airway. Another

Dr. Jeffrey Weller

1. Are you snoring? 2. Does anyone ever notice you stop breathing during sleep? 3. Do you gasp for air during sleep? 4. Do you awaken with dry-mouth? 5. Do you have morning headaches? 6. Do you have difficulty staying asleep? 7. Do you feel tired during the day? 8. Do you have difficulty paying attention while awake? 9. Do you have irritability? 10. Do you have wear on your teeth?

major sign is daytime sleepiness that can be accompanied by irritability or depression. Even medical conditions such as high blood-pressure, diabetes and obesity can be signs of underlying sleep apnea. Is this part of a regular check-up? In my practice, it is. We focus on comprehensive care, meaning that we’re looking at wear and tear on teeth as kind of a disease in the mouth. A lot of dentists are teeth doctors; they don’t look at the underlying cause of the problem. As dentists, we are in a unique position to identify apnea that may otherwise often go unnoticed. We are able to assess the airway and potential risk factors of blockage, such as a large tongue, excess tissue or a narrow airway. We also know that oftentimes bruxism (toothgrinding) and sleep apnea go hand in hand. Therefore, when we see evidence of grinding—such as tooth-wear, broken teeth, chipped teeth or pain on chewing—we can consider sleep apnea as a potential etiology for these issues. Worn, chipped teeth and acid erosion found on patients in our practice makes us dig a bit deeper into our patients’ health. We’re focused on getting to root of why a patient is destroying tooth structure so that when we restore, we can also help control the elements that caused us to get there in the first place. Who gets sleep apnea? When we think of sleep apnea, we often think of weight and age as strong risk factors. In truth, a person does not have to be overweight to have sleep apnea. Also, men and women of all ages and sizes can exhibit apnea. Sleep apnea can even occur in children and adolescents. You might not think of a petite woman as someone who has sleep apnea, but we are finding many health-conscious, slim, fit adults are suffering from sleep apnea. What dental treatments are available for sleep apnea? The most common dental treatment for obstructive sleep apnea is a mandibular advancement device. This appliance pulls the jaw (mandible) forward, and holds it in that position while you sleep. In doing so, the jaw, the tongue and associated musculature are prevented from obstructing the airway. Maintaining this open airway while you sleep ensures the body is getting adequate oxygen, and ensures that sleep is not being interrupted. Weller Dental can help arrange an at-home sleep study to determine if you are a candidate for a dental sleep apnea device. What kinds of results do you see? The biggest benefit that we have seen with dental sleep apnea appliances is compliance. While the CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine represents the gold standard in sleep apnea treatment, many patients find these machines difficult and cumbersome. Consequently, they end up not using the CPAP device. Dental obstructive apnea appliances provide a solution for these patients, because of ease of use, comfort and accessibility. We have a number of patients in our practice who were unable to tolerate the CPAP machine, and are now happy with their dental appliance. We also find it easier for those [for whom] travel is a big part of their lifestyle, to take on business or vacation trips. Sleep apnea devices are often covered in some degree by medical insurance, and at Weller Dental, we work to help execute this. n

Dr. Nesreen Suwan

Anti-Aging and Obesity Specialist

Obesity Is Not Your Fault Have you been struggling with extra 10 pounds, 100 pounds or even more? If so, you should understand that obesity is not your fault. You are not supposed to manage it alone, because it is not only about food. Obesity is a chronic and complex disease that is a worldwide health concern. Obesity was recognized as a disease by the American Medical Association (AMA) in its annual meeting in Chicago in 2013. Dr. Patrice Harris, an AMA board member, said, “Recognizing obesity as a disease will help change the way the medical community tackles this complex issue that affects approximately one in three Americans. In my opinion, obesity is not only a disease, but it may be the origin of so many other diseases that include, but are not limited to, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, stroke, sleep apnea, gall stones, fatty liver, chronic pain, osteoarthritis, some cancers (breast, colon, gallbladder, kidney and liver); depression, low selfesteem and having difficulties fitting on a small chair in a restaurant or a plane. Many people think that weight-gain and obesity are caused by a lack of willpower. That is not entirely true, because it is more complicated. Obesity is caused by complex genetic and environmental factors, and can be difficult to control through dieting alone, or on your own. It could be treatable with the help of healthcare specialists. Obesity is not only a result of overeating. It is a chronic disease that needs to be prevented and treated. Obesity may result from many factors including psychological, genetic, hormonal and environmental causes, and sleep deprivation.

Incoming Burr Ridge mayor Gary Grasso talks about his return to municipal government and village politics BY MIKE ELLIS PHOTOGRAPH BY DANIEL GARCIA

ast month, Hinsdale Magazine contributing editor Mike Ellis sat down with incoming Burr Ridge mayor Gary Grasso at his office to discuss his return to municipal government, village politics and issues, and his recent campaign against village trustee Zach Mottl. Grasso, who ran for Illinois Attorney-General in 2018, previously served as mayor of Burr Ridge from 2005 through 2012, before moving on to the DuPage County board. During his previous two terms as mayor, Grasso was instrumental in bringing the Burr Ridge Village Center to the village, and developing the “Burr Ridge bridge” concept along County Line Road over Interstate 55. Among his goals for the next two years are preventing Sterigenics from reopening in Willowbrook, and generating new revenues for the village through the Hinsdale Oasis, which is evolving during the large-scale Tri-State Tollway construction project that is currently underway. Grasso is finishing the term of former Burr Ridge mayor Mickey Straub, who resigned last November, which is set to expire in May 2021. MIKE ELLIS: You ran for attorney-general during the Republican primary last year. What prompted your decision to run for mayor of Burr Ridge, an office you previously held? GARY GRASSO: It’s an office I previously held, and therefore was very familiar with it. And there’s some things that I think still need to be done in Burr Ridge—and the fact that Mickey Straub, who had succeeded me, had decided and let me know that he was going to likely resign. So we talked about that, and he, to his credit, wanted to be sure that if he did resign, he resigned in time for the voters to decide. You know Illinois is infamous for putting people

in office and inheriting offices, and Mickey wanted to be sure that that [didn’t happen in Burr Ridge]—especially if I was going to be running, he felt the voters, I believe, should have an opportunity to reelect me if that’s what they wanted. ELLIS: Obviously, it was a pretty heated campaign from what I

saw online. GRASSO: From my challenger’s standpoint. I think he

degraded the entire political process in Burr Ridge, [and] should be held accountable for bringing in the type of politics that we all abhor at the national and state level. And I was extremely disappointed in the campaign that was waged by my challenger. ELLIS: I know at one point you were saying you were

contemplating legal action. Is that something that you’re still investigating? GRASSO: Yes, absolutely. ELLIS: You were endorsed by

Mickey [Straub] towards the end of the process. Were you surprised at all by his decision to interject, and do you feel that that had a positive impact?

me. It had been approved, but things can always happen in the interim; and it was very important that Mickey made sure the approval processes and everything else that had to happen did in fact happen. And if you look at that bridge, I think it’s a monument now to good planning, to Burr Ridge itself; it is a fabulous gateway for us. It’s still the only branded bridge, and I think it’s a model that should be used for the rest of the state, because really at no taxpayer expense, that bridge came to fruition. ELLIS: The board meetings in Burr Ridge have been getting a

lot of attention lately, with a number of speakers addressing the District 86 referendum question, probably because one or more of the trustees—and one in particular—took a very strong stance on that issue. Obviously you want to have participation at the meetings, but are you hoping to get back to something that’s a little bit more orderly? GRASSO: Absolutely, [the meetings have] to be orderly. The huge injustice that was done to both the “yes” people and the “no” people was that Zach made it personal. Zach used language that just incited people, called them names—that isn’t the way mature people handle problems. This is an issue; it hasn’t gone away with the referendum; and I have already engaged two of the people that I believe are more level-headed, want to present things on the facts, will not name-call. ... I’ve already called the new [assistant superintendent for academics at District 86,] Carol Baker, and Carol and I are hoping to sit down and start talking about some of the curriculum issues that exist. I think those are fine for discussions; I just have a strong feeling that a mayor or trustee shouldn’t take a position that one side is right and the other side is wrong. That’s why we have a school board. If I can facilitate or provide forums in Burr Ridge where there’s civil discussion of these issues, that’s fine. But also, about 40 percent or more of the village is not in District 86. The [Lyons Township] residents may have their own school issues, and I’d certainly entertain that; but we are not just a D86 village, and I thought that was an important distinction to bring forward.

... I’ve already called the new [assistant superintendent for academics at District 86,] Carol Baker, and Carol and I are hoping to sit down and start talking about some of the curriculum issues that exist.

GRASSO: I wasn’t surprised, after the way the campaign was being waged by the challenger. I think Mickey’s initial thought was to stay neutral. He had obviously worked with me, —GARY GRASSO and knew me well; and he had worked with the challenger. But after he saw what was being interjected into the politics of Burr Ridge, he felt very strongly that I was by far the better qualified and more appropriate candidate. And did his endorsement help? I believe it did; I welcomed it. Just the reaction of [Zach] Mottl to Mickey’s endorsement, number one, showed me that he’s not fit for office; and the attacks and the profanity used in those attacks in writing to Mickey. ELLIS: You’re referring to the text messages? GRASSO: Yes, the text messages [were] totally inappropriate, and I think disclosed who Zach really is, and why he shouldn’t be involved in village politics at all. ELLIS: What are some issues you’re looking at coming back to

Burr Ridge? When you last were in office, the bridge concept was just getting developed. I know Mickey played a role in that as well. GRASSO: Yes, Mickey played a major role in carrying that ball through. In fact, when I was resigning in order to take the elected job at DuPage County board, Mickey and I sat down and talked about that bridge, which was very important to

ELLIS: Is there anything that you think needs to be done

in terms of reaching out to LT Burr Ridge at this point, just because District 86 has predominated so much of the discussion? GRASSO: I actually have a couple of ideas about sitting down with the LT people as a possible discussion. I’d like to leave that now, because I want to be sure I include everybody in

those discussions, before I put forward some ideas, and see what they think of them. But I am supportive of healthy discussions on school issues in the community. I pay very high taxes; everybody pays very high taxes; and I’m concerned with how those are affecting my property values. I’m sure that’s a common thread in everybody’s thinking.

the western suburbs, and I want to make that as attractive as possible.

ELLIS: Are there any specific issues in Burr Ridge that you

GRASSO: I think the days are probably coming—they’re still out there in the future—where the communities are going to have to sit down and decide, do they want four police departments, do they want all these school districts? They may want them, but are they financially sustainable? With the pension requirements of the state, with just the cost of running these smaller communities, you have to start looking at alternatives to the little hamlets that we have become, and decide that we maybe do need to consolidate services, whether it’s public works; it could be fire, police and other things.

think people should be aware of at the moment? GRASSO: Mike, it’s always revenue, revenue, revenue. This state is still on the brink of financial disaster. We’re already talking about a progressive tax that I think is going to drive some people out— and the very people we do not want to lose in Illinois—out of Illinois. They’re going to ask for a change in the constitution. At the state level, because of my prior involvement in —GARY GRASSO some of these issues, I’m going to be advocating, if you’re going to change the constitution of Illinois, you better address the so-called right to a public pension, which should be in my opinion removed—and should have never been part of a constitution. And also, the redistricting rules should be changed to allow fairer districts. ... More to the point as to Burr Ridge, the village center has to be fully leased. I’ve already sat down, before the election and since, with the new owners, and am excited about participating with them in their plans. There is the TCF property, which is about 16 acres, that kind of straddles between County Line Square and the village center. That has to be developed. There’s some discussion about a sports-orientated facility down there and other projects, which I’m all for as long as they’re done in a way that brings solid revenue streams to Burr Ridge. People think that villages run on property taxes: we do not. Maybe two percent of your property taxes go into a village. We need sales tax, we need impact fees, in order to sustain Burr Ridge.

ELLIS: I know you and I have talked about consolidating

governmental units before. Could you elaborate a little bit on what your vision for that would be in terms of Burr Ridge, Hinsdale and some of these surrounding communities?

I’m excited to be back. As much as people thought going to the county board was a step up, it is not, in my opinion. Being the mayor of Burr Ridge was the political highlight of my career; I’m glad to be back and doing it. I have an intention right now to run for reelection [in 2021]...

ELLIS: You have that area in back of the village center near the

village green, I believe, that’s still untenanted, right? GRASSO: Yes, it’s about 30 percent of the village center that

has never been leased. Of course, the new owners are well aware of that, and probably was a reason that factored into their ability to buy it at a relatively low number; but yet it’s a large challenge to them. I really do think that village center is necessary to the viability of Burr Ridge. ... Burr Ridge is still a destination place, I believe, for people who want to move to

54

Hinsdale60521.com | HINSDALE MAGAZINE, INC.

ELLIS: Would you say it’s too difficult to reform the pensions

just contractually? GRASSO: Without a change of the Constitution of the State

of Illinois to take away the right—we’ve already got an Illinois Supreme Court case that’s going to tow that line. Certainly, the public safety sector—the firemen and the policemen— they deserve great pensions. It’s just that if you run the numbers, they’re not sustainable now. There has been some pension reform, a few years ago, but there needs to be more. I think the people that are heavily invested in the pension systems, we should support paying them; but there needs to be a new system for the pensions going forward for this state to exist well past my lifetime. ELLIS: Is there anything else you would like to add? GRASSO: I’m excited to be back. As much as people thought going to the county board was a step up, it is not, in my opinion. Being the mayor of Burr Ridge was the political highlight of my career; I’m glad to be back and doing it. I have an intention right now to run for reelection [in 2021], since this is only filling the remainder of Mickey’s term. ... Given the volume of votes I received, I’m encouraged that people are behind what I want to do. n

OUTSIDE YOUR ELEMENT PHOTOS BY MARCELLO RODARTE

More than 400 west suburban residents gathered for “Outside Your Element,” the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) annual benefit, at The Godfrey Hotel Chicago in the River North neighborhood of Chicago on March 2. The versatile layout afforded attendees the option of dancing and mingling on their feet, or relaxing on commodious lounge furniture. VIP guests had the option of huddling into cozy “igloos” on the rooftop—which featured heaters and fire-pits to combat the chilly atmosphere—and gaze upon the spectacular Chicago skyline to the south. Headlining the benefit was Paul DelVecchio Jr., a/k/a DJ Pauly D, a professional disc jockey and housemate on the MTV reality television show Jersey Shore from 2009 to 2012.

CUPID COURTS PHOTOS BY DANIEL GARCIA

The platform tennis ladies of the western suburbs put aside their competitive nature, and enjoyed a day of fun paddle play for a good cause. For the past eight years, a group of women passionate about paddle have hosted Cupid Courts Misericordia, a day of friendly paddle play to raise money for Misericordia. This event has grown in popularity, and raised more than $30,000 this year, hosting nearly 100 women from Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Western Springs, Oak Brook and Burr Ridge. Paddle tennis pros from the area donate lessons, equipment and time to this event each year, along with above 40 business and families that sponsor and donate raffle items. The Elm Elementary School PTO hosted a Middle Easternthemed fundraiser at Ruth Lake Country Club in Hinsdale on March 9. The lineup included a Middle Eastern dancer, an Arabic band and a Turkish coffee server who greeted guests upon arrival. Among distinguished guests were District 181 superintendent Dr. Hector Garcia, Elm School principal Sara Olson and teachers. The live and silent auctions raised in excess of $40,000 to help support the school’s “ask” list and several other school projects. 62

BLOOM TABLESCAPES PHOTOS BY MARCELLO RODARTE

More than 400 west suburban ladies attended the annual Tablescapes luncheon, presented by the Hinsdale chapter of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary, at the Hilton-Oak Brook Hills Resort in Oak Brook on March 10. The theme for this year’s fundraiser was “Bloom,” and the ornate tablescapes furnished by chapter members conveyed that theme very adequately. During the first part of the event, ladies browsed an assortment of boutique tables while socializing amongst one another. They then enjoyed lunch courtesy of the resort. Hinsdale chapter president Catherine Ann Welch introduced Ben Bradley of WGN Ch. 9, a Hinsdale resident, who served as the first emcee in the more than two decade history of Tablescapes. ll of us get tugged in different directions from time to time. Here’s a tip: let maestro Peter Lipari and his talented 130-member West Suburban Symphony and Chorus (WSS) put you under the spell of a beautiful, powerful live concert, seemingly performed just for you. One recent concert featured songs by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein from Show Boat, followed by songs from Porgy and Bess by George and Ira Gershwin and DuBose Heyward— standing ovations. On June 15, Giuseppe Verdi’s magnificent Requiem will be performed at Wentz Hall in Naperville. And on Aug. 3, Lipari has planned a world tour of music for dance at Cantigny Park in Wheaton. Other concerts have featured music with fantasy, holiday and movie themes, as well as timeless classical favorites. In short, there is music for all ages and tastes. As Lipari says, “We are not a bunch of stuffed-shirts playing nothing but music that’s 300 years old.” How does all this happen? After all, most in the group have full-time day-jobs, or are enjoying their retirement, studying in college, and are otherwise busy outside of music. First of all, not only are they talented; they love to play music and sing. Secondly, they love the opportunity to be part of a special group that has been

performing continuously for 72 years. Some have met and married, and are still part of the group to this day. The other thing that makes for excellent live music is that members are willing to put in the work separately and together in demanding rehearsals that lead up to each performance. WSS is a non-profit organization where members are volunteers who not only share music, but who manage the group and perform all of its business functions. “It is a labor of love,” WSS president Richard Lukes said. At the end of each concert, they hear genuine appreciation as they mingle with

the audience on their way out. “Besides selecting the themes and music, there is nothing quite like the rush of a group on-stage that is so good and loves to play for the crowd, and you pull off another wonderful, synchronized sound, just the way composers intended,” Lipari said. All this for $25 or less a ticket, and free parking, just minutes away. Come as you are. n For more information about the West Suburban Symphony and Chorus, visit www.westsubsymphony.org, or call 630887-7464.

DIVEHEART IN DEPTH

Sarah Repka with one of Diveheart’s adaptive divers, Phillip. Photo provided by Diveheart.

LIFE-changing Gain a whole new perspective of volunteering from Sarah Repka The “Diveheart ripple effect” is used to inspire people of all abilities to “imagine the possibilities” in their lives. Sarah is the exemplification of this effect. She humbly takes the unrealized human potential that exists in people with disabilities, and she helps create a paradigm shift in the lives of children, veterans and others with disabilities. Her touch inspires them to transform from Johnny or Jane in the wheelchair to Johnny or Jane the scuba-diver. This new identity builds new confidence, independence and self-esteem, which helps them take on new challenges and helps them focus on what they “can do,” instead of what they “can’t do.” If Diveheart could clone Sarah Repkah, and spread her love and caring nature, it would surely make the world a better place. WHAT DREW YOU TO DIVEHEART? In retrospect, I was drawn,

because my daughters were becoming more autonomous, while preparing to leave home for college, and I needed to fill the void created by their growing independence. So, when I traveled to Bonaire in 2009, and my path crossed with Ruth Mangus-Brutlag and another Diveheart volunteer from Indianapolis—I believe his name was Jim. My interest was immediately piqued. Ruth was super personable and helpful with my mom, who at that time was in her late 70s, and was in a wheelchair due to a recent knee-replacement surgery. She had my undivided attention, when she shared video of her dives with an adaptive diver who had no arms or legs. I learned that she and Jim volunteered with Diveheart, and that Diveheart was close to my home, essentially right down the Burlington-Northern Metra tracks. I met, interviewed and was volunteering with Diveheart by the end of the year. I started my volunteer career in second grade, when I organized play dates between kids in my neighborhood and residents at

68

Hinsdale60521.com | HINSDALE MAGAZINE, INC.

the Ludeman Center, residential homes for individuals with profound disabilities, in my hometown, Park Forest. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF? As a Diveheart volunteer, I’ve learned that I have something to offer beyond raising amazing girls and educating Chicago’s youth. My training, my love of learning and my desire to be a positive influence in the lives of others has opened my life to a whole new world of volunteerism within the adaptive community. WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST IMPACTFUL EXPERIENCE? I feel so

lucky to have found and to be included in such a wonderfully caring community. I am truly blessed and very grateful to be able to experience the hope and joy adaptive scuba brings to others. It is impossible to put in words the beauty of witnessing the moment a diver’s face registers absolute bliss— and it’s contagious. At times, you can actually feel a change in an adaptive diver’s aura—an emotional, physical and spiritual change in their energy-field.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE AT DIVEHEART? I

wholeheartedly believe that smiles, laughter and kindness beget like behaviors in others. Within my varied roles as a volunteer and as an educator, I recognize and readily embrace the idea that we all come to the table with something special to offer. And in academics, sports (scuba), hobbies, etc., it is best to focus on individuals’ strengths in order to work toward desired outcomes.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO DONATE ALL YOUR TRAINING? Training is my way of giving back to and saying thank-you for the opportunity to be part of such an adaptive community.

MONGOLIA If you want to experience exotic and untouched places, one of the best ways is to visit Mongolia. BY MARK CHALABALA

AS A WORLD-TRAVELER, Hinsdale Magazine asked me to name the greatest place I’ve ever visited. Prior to August of 2016, there might be four or five “usual suspects” to rattle off. After that time, there was and continues to be only one: Mongolia. There are direct flights from Seoul and Moscow into Ulaan Bator, the Mongolian capital. It will be very hard to explore Mongolia on your own, because outside of the capital, paved roads and even road signs are rare. There are all-inclusive tour agencies catering to all levels here, but once you leave the capital, the experience is essentially the same: home-stays in traditional gers that dot the landscape as far as the eye can see. On a 12-day “Central Gobi” tour, you will see sheep, goats, sheep, yaks, horses and camels. You will visit temples, hot springs, sand dunes, “burning cliffs” and mountain gorges. You will endure the jarring, jostling commute of “over-land” touring; dirt ruts over paved roads. No signs, no mileage markers, always arriving “soon”. You can hike a sand dune in the Gobi, ride horses to an overnight camp, and take a camel on a tour of sand dunes. You will eat fried noodles and mutton— twice a day, every day. Continued on page 74

Hinsdale Magazine | WORLD

Above: Instant memory—just add camels; below: Mark Chalabala Photographs by Chalabala

Thou shalt neither text, tweet nor surf. The only “clouds” to connect with will be those out on the vast horizon out the windshield. You are officially “off the grid” here, unreachable. But you will be here, in Mongolia—a place so quiet you can hear a bird fly. Their wings against the wind make a sound, and you will have the time to hear it here, in this place. I had come here seeking to add a unique notch in my traveler’s belt—a two-week “been there, done that” sort of experience. I left after almost two months, stifling tears at the thought of leaving my Mongol hosts, with a promise of a return, somehow, someway. Most travel in Mongolia is based on your length of stay. There are four-day, 12-day and customlength tours. I opted for the 12-day tour, and then blew the budget by

74

Hinsdale60521.com | HINSDALE MAGAZINE, INC.

arranging a three-week custom tour to the Gold Eagle Festival in western Mongolia. This event was featured in the documentary “Eagle Huntress,” which was released that same year. Travel in Mongolia is generally made by van, but there are airplanes available between the east, central and west. They are few, by western standards. Tourists become like “parcels” to be delivered. It is not an easy road to travel here, but even years later, I can recall the feeling of being there.—And it is amazing. Mongolia is not so much a destination, but a place; a visit here will give you a notable pause in your routine. The lack of electrical connection actually allows you to reconnect to simpler times—a time before cities and towns, when nomads grazed their herds across a vast nothingness—in Mongolia. n

SUBURBAN MOTHERS ON THE FRONT-LINE The phone call after midnight arrived, and I’ve always dreaded its message: “Your child is in the emergency room. Please come here now.” The drug overdose was a shock. “I never saw this coming. How could this happen?” I pondered. “What could I have done? What do I do now?” Unfortunately, the above scenario is being replayed daily throughout America. Prevention is the key, and this begins with awareness and decisiveness. Opioids and alcohol do not care about your wealth, age or social status. With a laugh and a short euphoric feeling, drugs can grab the unaware, the injured, the daring and the socially weak. Our children are the prey, and they are being encircled by the impossible need to be perfect, excessively successful and socially accepted. It is the mothers on the front-line fighting society and peer groups for the hearts, minds and souls of their children. Your sons and daughters are only as good as what they think and do when you’re not there. Are they prepared? Have you trained them to be world-class decision-makers? As you mentally view this next scenario, know your role, and be armed with the tools to combat society’s formidable foe. “This party is awesome. All my friends are here, and I look great,” pondered the daughter of a prominent family. Suddenly on a table in front of her is a line of cocaine. What will she do? If she looks around to see what her friends are doing, you failed. If she snorts the line with bravado, you failed. If she swiftly gets up to leave while holding her hand out for her friend to come with her—and make no mistake, she’s leaving with or without her friend—, you succeeded. One battle won. Phew—next. Depression, anxiety, fear, worry, frustration, chaos, panic, anger and negative thinking has penetrated the homes of America’s families. Backing up like a toilet, this negative energy swiftly hides within our muscles, and silently hobbles the potential high achiever. Apathy arrives; indecision prevails; chaos rules. Overthinking dominates all actions, while self-esteem plummets. Escape is the quest when no tools or positive role models are readily available. Negative stress impacts everyone within the home. For over 20 years, the fabric of family unity has frayed, and it’s unraveling daily in homes across our country. Women, mothers: we need you more than ever (no offense to the great dads among us). You are the beacon of hope for the future.

Here are some of my proven, concrete tools, tips and techniques. Family Vision Night. Once a month, this dinner night (candlelight

optional) is when each family member shares their vision for their future with the entire family. Mom, dad, teenagers and grade-schoolers all share. The vision could be for the week or a lifetime. No rules; no making fun of any vision. Lastly, create a shared vision for the family (community activity, charity event, home improvement project, vacation, etc.). Shared vision will begin to mend the family unit.

I want to hear your voice. Teenagers must call and not text

when they are out with their peers. Hear their voice inflections, tonality and background noise. If you sense something’s wrong, they must come home now—period. Listen to your gut.

No cell-phones. Forbid media devices (parents included) at the dinner table—and this includes restaurants. Talk; ask questions; engage. Just be mom. You can be their best friend later—when they’re 30. Be decisive. “No” means “no”—and do not feel the need to qualify your answer. Coach your kid to greatness. Greatness, however, is reaching a

high daily standard over a long period of time. A standard is a minimum requirement for a satisfactory performance according to the performer. This mindset has set many high-school and college student-athletes free from the need to overachieve and overthink, especially when they perform against superior competition.

Sssssh. Listening and retention increases 35 to 40 percent

when the voice is low, and silence is spaced between the words. —No yelling.

Four most powerful words. Within 30 minutes of your child’s sleep, lower your voice, add silence between the words and whisper (once), “I believe in you.” This will be replayed 15 to 20 times by your child while they sleep during the night. Selfesteem will rise after seven to ten consecutive nights. This works! Be aware of negative self-talk. Your children’s inner dialogue eventually will be revealed, and this dictates their success or failure. Check your inner dialogue as well. Wannabe coach. Avoid living vicariously through your children

and their sport. It’s not about you. Sports teach decisionmaking. Leave your ego at home before watching them perform.

balanced at a high level, the intangibles of self-discipline, concentration, optimism, relaxation and enjoyment (S.C.O.R.E.) have equal importance on attracting peak performance in school, sports or other activities. Be aware of these five markers in your child’s overall mindset.

Conflict No. 1. Negative stress can swiftly

arrive when your child’s expectations (and your own) do not match reality. Coping mechanisms are needed. “Next!” is the battle cry.

may require your student to fail. Success is getting up one more time from defeat. There are always lessons to learn. Give choices and let children decide. Unfortunately, there are consequences for poor choices.—Oh, well. Breathe. Reduce your breathing (daily) from

the average 15 to 17 breaths per minute to six to eight breaths. You’ll instantly feel your shoulders relax, and a calmness will begin to blanket you. Teach your children to do the same. When mom is relaxed, the family is relaxed.

Mothers, you are the world’s greatest coaches. This is why pro athletes always say, “hi, mom!” when on camera. You are your family’s last line of defense from a negative society. Be armed. There’s no need to be perfect—just be your genuine, authentic best self. When you take care of you, your family benefits. I believe in the power of women, especially moms. My grandmother, mother, wife and daughters are strong women. They all contributed more than anyone to my success. When strong women form a united front, everything is possible. Let’s turn our children into world-class decision-makers. Fast forward to the future. “Hi, mom! Wish you were here. Your grandchildren are having their first family vision night. Thank you. I love you.” n
