his past year saw many local residents participate in vibrant community events in and around the Hinsdale area. Some were familiar favorites, such as the Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club annual benefit, Tablescapes, benefiting the Hinsdale auxiliary chapter of the Infant Welfare Society, and The Community House’s Walk the Walk for Autism. Others were entirely novel concepts, such as the Black Cat Ball, a costume party organized by the Hinsdale Humane Society Ambassadors to benefit the humane society. We look forward to capturing those memorable moments at a host of community events in 2016. n

very small town seeks to have its attractions or destinations. The Village of Clarendon Hills, in conjunction with volunteer residents, even made attracting “destination� businesses a part of its 2014 Downtown Master Plan. For some towns, those destinations are hidden or concealed, nestled amidst stores and office buildings. These destinations may go similarly unnoticed, were it not for the references or recommendations they receive from locals. And then there are those destinations that are by nature unmistakable, their very sights diverting the attention of immediate onlookers. For the Village of Continued on the next page

Western Springs, its historic water tower has always been such an attraction. Elevating 112.5 feet above the ground, this Romanesque cylindrical tower is not only one of the tallest structures in the Western Suburbs today—it was furthermore one of the tallest in all of Chicagoland when originally completed in 1892. (Standing a mere 138 feet above the ground, the Home Insurance Building, constructed in Chicago in 1884, was the world’s tallest skyscraper until 1890.) “There were only about 500 people in the village when they built this tower,” said John Devona, archives manager for the Western Springs Historical Society (WSHS). ... “They built this incredible building, for its day.” Three prominent engineers and Western Springs residents undertook the construction plans, the most notable of which was one Benzette Williams, who briefly served as chief engineer for the Chicago water system and designed water systems for the Pullman neighborhood in Chicago. “It was quite the accomplishment in its day,” Devona said. “Some of the records we have indicate that people from other towns throughout the Midwest came to see this wonderful marvel.” Devona, who has conducted considerable research on various water towers throughout the Midwest,

said the only similar one of which he is aware in the Chicagoland area is the Riverside water tower, which is also quite discernible along the Metra line on the Burlington Northern railroad. Despite its tremendous height, Devona said construction proceeded expeditiously, finishing in less than two years. The total cost of the project was about $79,000, which according to the historical society, translates to roughly $2 million at the present-day, adjusted for inflation. “They did it without any barracks or cranes,” Devona said. “They had wood scaffolding they put up, so as they went up, they kept adding to the scaffolding.” While the tower is a nice historical landmark today, it was a far more efficacious structure for many years, originally supplying, (as the term “water tower” would suggest,) water to Western Springs residents. Construction entailed not only the tower itself, but also a well in Spring Rock Park, located nearby at 47th Street and Central Ave., as well as the installation of water mains and fire hydrants in all of the neighborhoods. “It was quite a project,” Devona said. The WSHS relates that the original tank, located in the upper half of the tower, held 133,000 gallons, but that this tank was replaced in 1937 by one with a


capacity of 169,000 gallons. Devona said steam-powered pumps at Spring Rock Park were used to pump the water to the tower basement, “and then the water would come up this side of the tower to the very top, and it would be stored here until needed; and then gravity would push it through the pipes.” What is all the more remarkable about this tower is that it not only functioned as the village water service vehicle, but also housed the village offices, the town police department and even a courtroom until the middle part of the 20th century. The police department was situated on the first floor until 1968, while the courtroom resided on the second. Devona explained that in those days, circuit court judges would travel from town to town to hear various traffic, small theft and other minor or misdemeanorclass cases. This procedure was more convenient for local residents, as well as for police officers, who did not have to be pulled from their duties to a more remote venue. “The people lined up on the staircase, because there wasn’t enough seating,” Devona said, describing the cramped courtroom. Devona said it was the courtroom component that ultimately drove the movement to the construction of a standalone village hall in Western Springs. “The court finally said they would no longer meet in this building,” he said, “because it was not air-conditioned, there were no decent restroom facilities, it was too crowded—and the list went on.” Devona said there were two or three previous attempts to build a village hall, the most notable of which occurred in the 1940s. “They were all set to go, and then the City of Chicago decided it was going to build the subway system,” he said. “So, all of the federal money that was going to go to all these little communities for projects redirected to Chicago; and so our beautiful village Continued on the next page Hinsdale60521.com | HINSDALEMAGAZINE

hall just disappeared overnight.” As the village offices and police department were shifted out of the tower in the late 1960s, it was also replaced as the primary water supplier to Western Springs residents during the same decade by a new tower at Spring Rock Park, which held one million gallons of water. Because the town had grown substantially from its population of approximately 500

in 1892, its water needs had swelled proportionately. Another tower near the south campus of Lyons Township High School that holds two million gallons is also used today. Devona said residents now utilize more than one million gallons of water per day. Unlike Hinsdale and many surrounding communities, Western Springs does not get its water from Lake Michigan. “We still do well-water in this town,” Devona said. “This is one of the few towns in Cook County that still draws water from the wells. seen sewing machines in many cases,” Devona said. ... “Kids love the typewriter, too—most of them have never seen a typewriter. And I had to explain to a little boy the other day how a dial telephone works; he had never seen one before.” The third floor functions as a small “children’s museum,” featuring an old dollhouse that was donated a few years ago, some old school desks and a 1938 globe that Devona said showcases some countries that are no longer recognized. In 1981, the water tower was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is open to the public for free tours on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon, and Devona encouraged local residents who have never visited to stop by for a tour.

“We think it’s the village’s icon,” he said. “In fact, the village recently improved the front entrance—new stairs—, and we buried a time capsule.” The time capsule to which Devona alluded is buried in front of the entrance to the tower, and will be opened in 2086—the 200th anniversary of the village. “I think the town really comes together here,” Devona said. “This is where all our Christmas events are held, our Easter events, our start-of-summer events, our concerts in the park. “I think it’s going to be here a lot longer than any of us realize.” n To learn more about the Western Springs Water Tower, visit www.westernspringshistory.org.

NEAT Style Neat Method brings high-end harmony to Hinsdale homes


W

hat happens when two neat freaks meet? Chicago-area expatriates whose husbands had been transferred to Silicon Valley, Ashley Murphy and Molly Graves met by chance while shopping in San Francisco, and instantly bonded over their shared hometown—as well as their shared passion for organization. In 2010, the newfound friends decided to turn their passion into a business, and launched Neat Method, more as a fun hobby than anything else. But in a town in which tech tycoons have more money than time, Neat Method’s concept— seamless, luxurious, uber-fast home organization that’s hands-off for the client—quickly turned into a full-fledged business. Suddenly, the pair found themselves organizing closets, setting up home offices and micromanaging moves for executives at companies like Twitter, Facebook and Uber, where Graves’s husband Ryan had come to work as head of global operations for the then-start-up company. Meanwhile, in 2013, Murphy’s husband was transferred back to Chicago, so Murphy and Graves decided to launch the concept here. After finding success, this all-female entrepreneurial business became a fully-licensed brand, expanding to 12 different locations across the country, including San Diego, Scottsdale, St. Louis, Columbus, Milwaukee and New York, among others. This month, Neat Method launches in Hinsdale, where Murphy just so happens to be a resident. While the San Francisco business caters to singles—mostly men in the tech industry—, Murphy says the Hinsdale location will focus on families, especially the kinds of families that don’t have time to squeeze organization in between ballet lessons, hockey practice and soccer games. “With families, typically it’s the kids’ spaces— the bedrooms, the playroom, the mudroom and the Continued on the next page

basement—that really need help,” she says. Part of what makes Neat Method different, Murphy says, is its team-based approach. “Most organization companies send one organizer,” she says. “We come in as a team, so we can get a big project done in a day. In California, we used to tell our clients, ‘Go to Napa for the day, and when you get back, your place will be spotlessly organized.’ ” Managing moves is one of the company’s specialties. “We handle all the logistics of a move from start to finish,” Murphy says. “When the movers arrive with your boxes, we are onsite unpacking

It’s a turn-key operation.” While Neat Method does not provide interior design service, it does bring a chic California vibe to its organization system, maintaining partnerships with Pottery Barn, the Container Store and the Organizing Store. “We call ourselves behind-the-scenes interior designers, because we design all those spaces that are often behind closed doors—closets, pantries, kitchen cabinets, offices and playrooms,” Murphy says. “We come to your home, and really get to know your space and your things. We measure shelves, doors, cabinets and closets, and from those measurements, we come up with a system that’s aesthetically pleasing and truly functional.” For many clients, organization starts in the master bedroom closet, and Neat Method’s signature style is an eye-catching color-coded clothing system that makes getting dressed in the morning as fun as it is functional. New York City has Nobu, and Hinsdale has Nabuki. Both are synonymous with delicious sushi. According to Nabuki manager Sean Eason, it starts with premium ingredients. “We order from the best seafood distributor in the city,” Eason says. “We get the most expensive tuna, fresh, high-quality crab and salmon from Alaska, and produce from local organic farmers.” Even Nabuki’s traditional sauces—an essential feature in Japanese cuisine—are imported from Japan. Yet Nabuki, a fusion of the two owners’ last names and the Japanese word for spirit—ki—, serves up more than just traditional Japanese cuisine. Executive chef Juan Perez, who has been rolling and cutting fish for more than 25 years, and had his own sushi bar before Nabuki opened in 2010, puts a contemporary American spin on many of the dishes. His “chef’s special rolls,” for example, feature surprising ingredients and eclectic combinations that are a meal unto themselves. “It’s a myth that sushi isn’t filling—especially if you’re eating one of these rolls,” Eason says. While Nabuki offers a number of traditional American entrees, almost all of them are given a Japanese spin. Filet mignon is marinated in wasabi, and served with Japanese mashed sweet potato; lobster tail is paired

with seaweed and yuzu butter; and Chilean Sea Bass is plated with sticky Jasmine rice, Japanese carrots and miso sauce. Even traditional American items on the kids’ menu are given the Japanese treatment: chicken fingers, for example, come with edamame instead of fries. It is a winning combination that is also surprisingly healthy. “Almost everything we serve is gluten-free, and very little is fried, so it’s mostly lowcalorie,” Eason says. “Vegetarians can also enjoy our food, because we don’t use traditional meat-based stocks. It’s very easy to eat here if you’re on a restricted diet.” While a cocktail might put you over your New Year’s resolution calorie limit, Nabuki makes it rather tempting, with a variety of specialty cocktails that are made from scratch using inhouse syrups and fresh berries, and a wine list bursting with full-bodied American and New World wines from Argentina, Chile and New Zealand. On Sundays, the entire wine list is half price—an incredible bargain, if you’re able to score a seat. “We have 99 chairs total in the restaurant, including the bar,” Eason says. SOCIAL SECURITY What you need to know for when file-and-suspend is no longer a retirement savings strategy by Mike Ellis

e’re all familiar with that nine-digit number we commit to memory, dread sharing with others, and perhaps ask our accountants whether we really need it to appear on that most important check of the year bound for Cincinnati or Kansas City. This number is more than an omnipresent identification code, which many may be reminded of next year, when some significant Social Security reforms are expected to be implemented. In early November, both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate approved legislation that will eliminate several retirement strategies that many Americans have utilized for decades. President Barack Obama signed off on the bill later that month, passing it into law. The most significant change resulting from the legislation will be the elimination of the file-and-suspend strategy, which husbands and wives have long employed as a sort of deferment tactic in claiming Social Security benefits. Under this strategy, one spouse files for the benefits at the full retirement age of 66, but suspends them, essentially deferring the benefits onto the other spouse. Meanwhile, the spouse who filed-and-suspended would capitalize off of retirement credits accruing at eight percent, compounded, over the next four years. “That was a good way to kind of maximize the Social Security income,” said Larry Gatz, vice president at Westchester-based Wealth Planning Network, a wealth management firm that works with high net-worth clients. “Now that that’s going away, you’re [only] able to take your own Social Security benefit.” According to an Investment News article published the week of Nov. 2, 2015, the Social Security Administration (SSA) said file-and-suspend and other options this legislation will prohibit was

costing it “billions of dollars” each year. Social Security was created in 1935, when, as the country was recovering from the Great Depression, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act to function as a “system of federal old-age benefits,” while also providing aid to the disabled in the workforce. In 1937, the first year Social Security benefits were distributed, the federal government paid out more than $1.2 million; but the total benefits distributed quickly swelled, exceeding $1 billion by the 1950s. According to the SSA, it will pay out nearly $870 billion to more than 59 million Americans in 2015. In an attempt to scale back this escalating federal spending, Congress said by passing this legislation, it is closing “loopholes” in the Social Security system. “They’re constantly trying to come up with new ways to reduce what Social Security is paying out,” said Gatz, adding that he believes it was a “fairly easy target to hit.”

to formulate retirement plans, Templeton said unfortunately, you are “stuck,” and that this will not be an option available for you. Gatz said while taking away a long-used retirement savings strategy, the prohibition of fileand-suspend will “simplify” the Social Security issue. “It really simplifies things quite a bit,” he said. “There’s not a whole ton of new planning strategies around it.” For those who feel they may not have saved sufficiently for retirement, but will now be unable to implement file-and-suspend, simple adjustments include cutting your spending or extending your career. Given the present economic climate and the fact that people in general are living longer, many individuals are electing to remain in the workforce beyond normal retirement age. Templeton said this is not necessarily the best strategy for everyone, citing a statistic that roughly two-thirds of people who make this decision stop working due to diminishing health.

In an attempt to scale back this escalating federal spending, Congress said by passing this legislation, it is closing “loopholes” in the Social Security system. According to Wealth Planning Network, the reform “came suddenly, with little public or media coverage, as it was a part of the larger emergency spending bill that Congress passed to avoid default.” While some believe the impact of the bill will be felt most by wealthy and affluent individuals, Susan Templeton, founder and president of Oakbrook Terrace-based Stafford Wells Personal Wealth Management, believes it will be felt even more by a different class. “It will impact the affluent, but it will also impact the middle class, where you have dual-income earners,” Templeton said, adding divorcees will also feel an impact, but to a smaller extent. Although it would appear that file-and-suspend will soon be a thing of the past, there is still time for select people to take advantage of the strategy before the law goes into effect on May 1. Individuals who were 66 or older at the end of 2015 may still file for and suspend their Social Security benefits by April 29. Templeton said taking advantage of this timetable can prove profitable, resulting in as much as $100,000 in retirement benefits for a given person. For those younger than 66 that are beginning

For individuals currently receiving Social Security benefits, monthly payouts are expected to remain the same in 2016. As the government seeks out more ways to cut spending, Templeton said additional Social Security reforms could be on the horizon. ary Poppins is set to fly over the rooftops of London and onto The Community House Stage Jan. 29 through Feb. 7. This family musical features songs from the classic Disney film, including “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Step in Time.” The show will be presented by Stage Door Fine Arts at The Community House in Hinsdale over two weekends “Audiences are in for smiles, laughs and some tears with Mary Poppins,” said Paula Taylor, artistic director for Stage Door Fine Arts. “I can’t think of a better way to kick off our 2016 season of musicals at The Community House than with a magical, fun show like Mary Poppins. With all of the great characters and songs from the film, with high-energy dancing, flying, high-tech sets and lighting, and some great new songs,

HINSDALE 1 CHRISTMAS WALK CELEBRATING 50 YEARS Photography by Marco Nunez Hundreds of local residents made their way to downtown Hinsdale for the 50th annual Hinsdale Christmas Walk on the evening of Dec. 4.

Many young children enjoyed the traditional miniature train rides on First Street between Washington and Garfield Streets. Local businesses and community organizations aligned south Washington between Hinsdale Ave. and First Street, including the Hinsdale Public Library, Fox’s Pizza and new business Luxxe Organix. Attendees enjoyed munching on pizza at the Fox’s table, and spinning a wheel for treats and prizes at the nearby library table. A number of downtown shops left their doors open for business late, including Razny Jewelers and Zazu Salon and Day Spa.

THE COMMUNITY HOUSE HOLIDAY BALL Photography by Marco Nunez More than 450 area residents kicked off the holiday season in style at The Community House Holiday Ball on Dec. 5. This sold-out event transformed The Community House (TCH) into a sparkling, sophisticated and chic venue filled with an abundance of holiday spirit. Guests began the evening with a festive cocktail hour in Kettering Hall, as they perused and placed bids on more than 200 bottles of wine from exclusive vintages around the world. Always an anticipated event at the holiday ball, the silent wine auction helps support the many needed programs offered at TCH. The transformed venue sparkled in colorful palettes of deep purple and dazzling diamond as guests began a yearlong Diamond Jubilee celebrating TCH’s 75 years of service to the community. They dined on a fabulous meal provided by Food for Thought. Attendees were

Dr. Bognet has this advice for caring for your extremely dry skin during winter months: Cold, dry air can dehydrate the skin causing flaking, itching, and redness and even cracks and bleeding in sensitive skin individuals. Stop the scalding hot water! Steaming hot water, while it may temporarily ease itching, only worsens dry skin. Opt for lukewarm and short, less than 10 minute, showers instead. If you can’t tolerate the cooler water temps, try warming your towels in the dryer for use when you get out. Avoid drying bar soaps or fragrant shower gels. Typical brands that over-dry patient’s skin include: Dial, Irish spring, Ivory, and Zest. These soaps can rarely be tolerated by non-oily skin people and especially not in the dry winter months. In terms of shower gels, try to avoid brands that are translucent or colorful and have added fragrance. Examples include Axe, Old Spice, Bath and Body works. Instead, look for thick, opaque white creamy body washes like, Epionce milky cleanser.

Dry skin is more vulnerable to damage that is why it is important to have a consistent skin care routine to avoid having it evolve into eczema: Moisturizer– this is best done immediately after washing while the skin is still a little wet. We call this “soak and smear.” Just pat

dry after bathing, then apply a thick moisturizer to all affected areas. While there are many brands to choose from, we encourage looking at a product’s consistency. Thick, ointments and creams that come in a jar that you have to “scoop” out will have the greatest ability to seal water into your skin. If these are “too greasy” for you, another option is Epionce medical barrier cream which is wonderful for face or body.

Outdoor enthusiasts- protect your skin from sun-damageeven in the winter: It is important to protect your skin year round. Not only to decrease the risk of skin cancer but also to prevent premature aging of the skin. An SPF of 30 – 60 is the goal with reapplication needed every 2 hours while outside. Physical blocker sunscreens that contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide are very protective and newer brands like Elta MD contain nanotechnology to make the products nearly invisible. Remember to protect your lips with sunscreen and eyes with sunglasses as well!

Dr. Bognet recommends these products for putting some spring back into your skin: In the winter months our skin can look dull and lifeless. My personal “go-to” products include: Epionce Intensive nourishing cream for morning and night. On the nights that I use a retinoid product, I love Avene Retinal eye and face. I layer that with Epionce medical barrier cream to avoid any flaking in the morning.

HOLIDAY HOUSE WALK

ANNUAL EVENT IN SUPPORT OF RAY GRAHAM ASSOCIATION Photography by Mike Ellis An estimated more than 200 local ladies supported the Ray Graham Association (RGA) while touring five west suburban homes in the third annual Holiday House Walk on Dec. 6. Chaired by Theresa McClear of Hinsdale, the Holiday House Walk raises money and awareness for RGA, which provides programs and services to more than 2,000 individuals with special needs in DuPage County. McClear said RGA is 77 percent state-funded, meaning it is in need of considerable community support. The walk featured three homes in Hinsdale, a home in Clarendon Hills and a Downers Grove residence that serves as a community living arrangement for eight women with special needs—a new wrinkle to this year’s tour. McClear was assisted by more than 60 local committee members, who served as house captains, docents and helped to secure the homes that were featured on the walk.

CHRISTMAS WALK CLARENDON HILLS Photography by Mike Ellis Hundreds of area residents enjoyed a warmer evening at the annual Clarendon Hills Christmas Walk in downtown Clarendon Hills from 6 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 4. The past several walks have been distinguished by unusually frigid temperatures for the first Friday in December, but the weekend warm-up helped bring out families in droves. The walk commenced with the annual tree-lighting ceremony on the grounds of village hall, conducted by village president Len Austin. In the heart of the downtown, Cirrus Falcon provided musical entertainment, sponsored by Coldwell Banker of Clarendon Hills and Crescendo Music Management. Dozens of families formed a line at Fifth Third Bank, awaiting carriage rides, while a bevy of other families flocked to the triangle to spend a few minutes with Santa Claus.

IRS ANNOUNCES 2016 ESTATE AND GIFT TAX LIMITS Estate Taxes have always been a moving target, and for many in the estate planning field, a constant driver of change to the best laid estate plans. The exemption amount has varied greatly over the years, along with the top estate tax rate, which has been as high as 55%, and as low as 0% over the last 20 years.

Limits, which maintain the status quo for wealthy families. There were no substantial changes to the law for 2016, other than the exemption amount increasing to $5.45 million per individual, up from $5.43 million in 2015 to adjust for inflation. This means that a married couple can shield up to $10.9 million from the 40% federal estate and gift tax.

In the current political atmosphere, the Estate Tax Exemption continues to be a volatile and decisive topic on Capitol Hill, with some seeing it as a double-tax on families, and others seeing it as a way to tax the wealthy to pay down the increasing deficits. Currently, Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed a measure to set the Federal Exemption at $3.5 million, with a top estate tax rate of 65%, while the House of Representatives recently passed a measure to repeal the estate tax altogether.

The Illinois exemptions did not change for 2016, and remain at $4.0 million per individual. This means that a married couple can shield up to $8 million from 16% State Estate taxes. The Illinois exemption is not indexed for inflation like the Federal exemption, which was originally set at $5 million in 2011, and has increased incrementally since then. Separate from the lifetime gift exemption amount is the annual gift tax exclusion, which remains at $14,000 for 2016. This means that you and your spouse can each

give away $14,000 ($28,000 combined) to as many individuals you’d like before cutting into your lifetime exemptions. You can also make gifts for medical or educational expenses for anyone you choose without counting toward the annual gifting limits, as long as the expenses are paid directly to the institution. If you are concerned about the potential tax liability on your estate, the best advice is to consult with a professional to develop a strategy that removes assets from your estate and minimizes your tax liability. It is also critical to ensure that your estate plans take advantage of each individual’s exemptions amounts through proper trust planning, and through filing the proper estate tax paperwork upon the death of the first spouse.

With free-will, you can manage your S.C.O.R.E. level. Know that you are only as strong as its weakest link. You are responsible for all maintenance and repairs. Get into the “zone” this year. FOCUS FOR A NEW YEAR BLIND CONFIDENCE

Have you ever noticed the amazing capacity of some people to misread reality and misjudge potential with complete selfassurance? I think of the authority who once declared that the introduction of the railroad would necessitate the construction of many mental asylums, since people would surely be driven mad with terror at the sight of locomotives rushing by at the insane speed of 15 miles per hour. In the year 1870, a speaker addressing an assembly in Indiana offered a different perspective on transportation. “I believe we are coming into a time of great inventions...when men will fly through the air like birds,” he said. “That’s heresy!” exclaimed an esteemed clergyman. “God has reserved flight for the angels.” That same Bishop Wright then went home and told his two sons (Wilbur and Orville) how things would always be. In 1899, Charles Duell, the Director of the U.S. Patent Office, petitioned the president for the closure of his department, writing, “Everything that can be invented has been invented.” But my favorite statement is the one that The Beatles’ John Lennon had engraved on a plaque over the mantel of the mansion that he built for his mother near the cliffs of Dover. The words were those he’d heard from his mom almost daily while growing up: “Playing the guitar is just fine, John, but you’ll never be able to make a living doing it.”

SEEKING BETTER VISION

True confession: I miss it a lot too. I can easily see the glass as half-empty, or too quickly focus on the faults of others. In my clearest moments, however, I know that I don’t want to be like that. I would much rather be someone who sees the grand potential in individuals and circumstances. I think, in this regard, of the young man who came to interview for a job as the pilot of a Mississippi River steamboat. Doubtful that such a youth could possibly understand the dangers of the river, the interviewer asked if the man knew where all the rocks were. “No, sir, I don’t,” the applicant replied, “but I do know where they aren’t.” He got the job. How often do we approach difficulties in our families, our workplaces or our social circles by looking for and sizing up the dimensions and sharpness of all of the rocks? We pour our energies into fixing blame, identifying flaws or mulling over how bad things are in so many areas. What might happen if we instead put our energies into steering towards those areas where we know there aren’t any rocks?

A wise man once said, “Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things,” (Philippians 4:8). This is where becoming a visionary starts. Any idiot can spot where the perils and problems of life lie, but the people who navigate most creatively through life are those who develop the discipline of discerning not all that is wrong, but “whatever is true, noble, or right.”

PICTURE PERFECTION IN YOUR PROBLEMS

First of all, look for the unseen possibilities in the face of some of your present problems. For years, a man named Fred Smith ran a troubled shipping business. One day, however, he stopped asking, “What’s wrong with the way we’re doing it?” and posed instead a far more generative question: “What would a perfect delivery system look like?” The answer to that query became the company we know as Federal Express. I know of a woman who dealt for years with the pain of a terrible loss. Day after day, she asked herself the same question, “How can life ever be the same?” And then one week, I met her with the sparkle of hope in her eyes. “What changed for you?” I inquired. “The question,” she said. “I began to wonder what it would look like for me to perfectly employ my experience of loss to help others in pain.” It birthed a new life and ministry for her. Start picturing the perfect solution instead of fixing on the painful problem, and watch how God flows the river of your life towards the good.

PICTURE THE POTENTIAL IN PEOPLE

Then try picturing the potential in the face of some of the difficult people in your life. I’m not talking about sugar-coating others’ flaws. but what if we deliberately took our eyes off of the rough edges, the annoying habits, the obvious limitations of someone with whom we struggle, and made it our business to thankfully name each day—and affirm to their face—at least one thing in her or him that was “admirable, excellent or praiseworthy?” We might be amazed to see how that person’s assets come to define their future and our experience with them. God has that sort of vision. He pictures the perfect potential in all the people we know. Where will we put our focus in the days ahead—on the rocks or on the river? How can we change the very questions we’re asking to help take us and others toward the good places we might go?
