COVER STORY

while she painted. A major influence on my future was when my father began to bring me paper from the factory for me to scribble on with colored pencils - but he had little idea then that he was contributing to the development of my artistic talent.

Sancler Graffit - Sancler, tell us a little about your story. Where did you come from, how was childhood? I was born in the city of Mogi Mirim Sao Paulo, but I was raised in Mogi Guaçu Sao Paulo. I come from a very simple family – my family consists of me, my parents and 3 brothers. When I was 4 years old, my father worked in a paper factory in the city we lived in and my mother was a housewife and as well as taking care of us, she painted dishcloths with art in acrylic paint and I stayed with her at home to take orders for her

At the same time as I was discovering my artistic talent, my brothers and I used to pick cotton and the son of the owner of the cotton plantation on payday (Saturdays – with payment in cash) heard me saying to a group of workers that I would be the best artist in my neighbourhood by the time I was 18 years old. So he then tapped me on my head and said: "Stop dreaming, Neguinho and go get your paycheque"!!! This was unfortunately the racism and humiliation I went through, but it was the fuel I needed to get here. The paycheque was hardly enough to buy a box of chocolate I loved! - Why did you move to Japan? How easy did you find it to adapt? In 2005 I decided to go to Japan. At the time I had a workshop where I painted graffiti on cars, motorcycles, helmets, etc... But things were not going well financially and I was already training boxing at the time and then I had met Robson Kawati and he had an employment agency in Japan and we became really friends and he wanted to help me and then he told me I can help you go to Japan and there you can do your arts and if you can fight you like it because it's the land of struggle and everything happens there. Then I listened to their advice and we managed to get my visa after a long time and so I embarked for the land of the rising sun. To begin with, I had a lot of problems adapting and getting to grips with the very different culture 7

COVER STORY

of Japan, which was completely the opposite to Brazil. But I ended up learning the language and this made me able to learn the culture and make new Japanese friends and that was essential for my adaptation. Then I started to like the people and the place and to adapt to the culture. I now have my permanent visa. - You've been through depression too. How was it and how did you overcome it? I had a panic attack for the first time in 2016 and I confess that I thought I was having a heart attack. This disease comes silently and ends many lives around the world, yet is still very much regarded as some sort of “new-fangled” illness or as something that is "all in the mind " – at least that’s what those who have never suffered from depression may think. I felt despondent and very sleepy all day, completely lacking in energy: I lay down and didn't want to get up for anything; I just wanted to watch movies and stuff; most of the time I wasn't hungry – but at other times I would binge on food. I sought medical help and treated myself with medication for anxiety. If I forgot the medication at home, I immediately had a crisis just thinking about it, it was horrible. I found that if I went for walks and exercise, they generated feelings of

happiness and this calmed my crises and little by little I stopped taking medications until I no longer needed them. A word of warning: if you suffer any of these symptoms, go see a doctor and don't be ashamed of it. If you manage to diagnose it early on, it can help avoid problems in future. - Why did you choose graffiti as art? I chose graffiti because of the style of art that had to do with my roots in the area where I grew up, where I listened to music by Racionais Mcs with Mano Brown and Ice Blue told the everyday stories of a brother who grew up as I grew up, this all motivated me.. I loved to see the Graffiti made by other artists in the streets on murals, I loved to play basketball in my neighbourhood with the brothers from there. When I did my first Graffiti I put all my feelings into it: from anger to a mixture of joy and suffering. I used to get freaked out watching guys do their gear on sneakers and then I thought, I can do this for sure and that's what I'm going to do. In 2019 I managed to participate in the first edition in Japan of Sneaker Con Osaka and I painted some sneakers at the show, which proved to be a succes. - Who was the first famous person you made sneakers for? How was his/her reaction 08

COVER STORY

The first famous person was Anderson Silva, former champion and UFC record holder. I'm his number one fan, and I made yellow sneakers with Spiderkick's logo and a spider web in orange colours highlighting the sneakers, I also made a graffiti suitcase to finish, it was a spectacle. I liked it so much I wanted to keep it to myself when I saw the result... but as I admired Anderson Silva a lot, it would be more exciting to see him receive my art! Well I send the sneakers to his house in Los Angeles and I was anxious for days waiting for news of his son Kalyl who helped me with all this to happen, a week after I sent them I was at home watching TV and a message arrived on my cell phone out of nowhere and when I opened it it was Anderson Silva sending me audios to thank him for the gift and also some videos he made showing everything, from the sneakers and the briefcase details and the certificate I hand-drawn for him. He loved it and said he would keep it as a trophy in his house. And I was moved by his affection and recognition, it was very gratifying. - Who has received Sancler Graffit sneakers as a gift? Anderson Silva Former UFC MMA Champion Fred Unencumbered Neymar Jr., Casemiro Captain of the Brazilian Soccer Team and Real Madrid player, LukianAraújo profes-

sional soccer player in Japan, Zico former soccer player and legendary, Muggsy Bogues former NBA pro player and starred in the movie Space Jam with Michael Jordan, Hollywood actor Michael Beach and starred in the movie Aquaman, Chris Lavish known as the King of Fashion Week and fashion stylist in New York and even this month he will be in Paris with a new Sneaker with my art and a jacket with graffiti of mine. Oweis Zahran one of the biggest businessmen and investors in the UAE and one of the partners of OWS Capital Investment, Joe Fournier World boxing champion and billionaire and owner of several nightclubs around the world of celebrities, Deiveson Figueiredo former UFC MMA world champion and In this month of January, Poliana Botelho, UFC MMA fighter and considered the muse of the UFC, disputes her former belt again in the United States, Maksud Agadjani Traxnyc Owner of renowned New York jewelry store TRAXNYC located on Diamond street, and also an actor in the Netflix film Uncut Gems starring actor Adam Sandler, Prince of Brunei Hakeem Jefri, Mada Abdelhamid former WWE pro wrestler Tough Enough, and trained the actor in the film Aquaman Jason Momoa, Rafaella Santos Neymar's sister, Gil Cebola Neymar's personal photographer, I made for Ana Paula Ferreira CEO of WOWE and CEO Maick Gomes of W7 09

HALL OF FAME 11

HALL OF FAME

ZICO

Zico is an idol for everyone who loves football. And to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Flamengo's world title, I presented him with a soccer shoes. I customized with the club's initials (CRF), 1981 in reference to the year of achievement and the colors red and black to refer to the club.

12

HALL OF FAME

POLIANA BOTELHO

I changed the characteristics of this Reebok Question Mid Basketball and dyed it with another color. Poliana carries the colors of Brazil when she fights, she is a patriot in the world of MMA. I used the colors of the country, and a skull associated to war. Every time she fights, she says that she is going to war. The rose gives it a feminine touch.

13

HALL OF FAME

OWS

Oweis let me free to choose the art. Since he works in the car industry, I painted the logo brand of his company, which is predominantly red, and selected the gold color for the inner part, in a reference to the wealth of the Emirates and the desert sand. I ordered this unique style, a Nike Air Force 1 Low Special Designer 1/1, to deliver this art.

14

HALL OF FAME

Neymar JR

Neymar loves everything that relates to Batman, which is his favorite superhero. Based on that, I customized these sneakers – the Puma Ralph Sampson White. I placed the character on one side, and the bat’s symbol on the other side. In the other pair of sneakers, the drawing represents the faces of

15

HALL OF FAME

MUGGSY

I've been a fan of his since I was a kid, when I used to play basketball. Buggsy, who played a role in the movie Space Jam, shined in the Charlotte Hornetts, and I put the bee that's the mascot. The sneakers model is Lebron James, the best player right now. I embroidered the #1 too, which was Buggsy's number.

16

HALL OF FAME

Michael Beach

Michael, who has acted in films like Acquaman, likes this bodybuilding universe and asked me for this theme. He chose an All Star Chuck Taylor who was very successful in the 80s and 90s, of neutral color, and i put an eagle with a handlebars because he is passionate about motorcycles.

17

HALL OF FAME

Traxnyc

I chose the sneaker for him. I customized it all in gold in allusion to his renowned jewelry store in New York, which served as the setting for the film Jewels, starring Adam Sandler. I wrote the name of the town on the back, drew Uncle Scroothes with dollar signs and put Trax's name on the sole.

18

HALL OF FAME

Lukian

The soccer shoes - Nike Mercurial Vapor – were grey. The first step was to dye it totally in blue. Then, I drew Trunks and Goky, at the request of the player. I painted some beams on the background to simulate a 3D effect. It is always challenging to customize soccer shoes. I used an airbrush for a perfect art.

19

20

HALL OF FAME

Fournier

These sneakers (Boxing Nike Hyperko) were a hard work. They were in dark-blue color, and I painted them in pink fluo and silver, since Fournier was going to wear these colors in a boxing match. I had to change it completely. I customized it with Fournier’s name, and the result was terrific.

21

HALL OF FAME

FIFA

Fred is Adidas’s ambassador in Brazil, so I bought these sneakers (Adidas I Love Tokyo) especially for him. This style does not exist in Brazil. I drew his character in “Fifa,” including the background colors when he appears in the game. The art was based on that. The most difficult was to detail the beard, the hair and the tattoos in such a small space.

22

HALL OF FAME

God of War

Deiveson is known as the “God of War.” He is a fan of Kratos, of the game “God of Wars,” so, in one shoe of this Reebok Classic, I drew this character, while in the other shoe I reproduced him striking Joseph Benavidez in the dispute for the UFC belt. It was challenging to detail his muscles and the spotlights reflected on the fence of the octagon. It was hard to get that, but everything was all right.

23

HALL OF FAME

Chris Lavish

A cameraman was filming me that day, so I could not make mistakes (laugh). I used the airbrush and a brush in this Nike Air Max Tailwind. Lavish is a designer, he likes a lot of color. I was free to choose the art. I drew the eye of a reptile, with shaded scales that give a gradient effect to green, as if it were an animal’s skin. It was fabulous, and made a lot of success!

24

25

HALL OF FAME

Sniper

I customized this Nike Air Jordan 1 Low with the logo of Case Sports, the CS:GO team founded by Casemiro. On the other foot of the shoe, I drew a very detailed uniformed sniper, with the barrel of the gun going to the front giving a 3D effect. It was the hardest drawing I've ever done in my career.

26

HALL OF FAME

Anderson Silva

The idea was to merge the yellow color, present in his fighting short, to the front kick delivered to Vitor Belfort, who would become the logo of his own team. I put a spiderweb on the nickname Spider and also made a briefcase for him.

SPECIAL THANKS

I would like to leave a note of admiration for the entrepreneurs Adami and Kyra Hsia, the owners of Zeus, the company that operates Adidas Combat Sports in Brazil, and in addition to representing this strong brand that I admire a lot, they are inspirations for me. They have been helping the careers of many athletes in Brazil, both professionals and amateurs. They partner with great athletes such as Acelino Popó Freitas, a three-time world boxing champion, boxer and Olympic champion Robson Conceição. Brazilian boxer, Esquiva Falcão Brazilian, Anderson Silva former UFC MMA World Champion and currently professional boxer and other big names. In addition, Zeus Adidas Combat Sports Brasil has a very beautiful and structured showroom in São Paulo with a variety of equipment to train martial arts, and in my opinion, as a former athlete, I think it's important to have people like Adami and Kyra Hsia in Brazil, as they add a lot to the lives of many athletes and help them achieve their dreams; dreams that perhaps would not become reality if help was not at hand. Congratulations Adami and Kyra Hsia for everything you have done both professionally and philanthropically. You motivate me to achieve more and more in my life and also showed me how important it is to help each other. I'm proud to have talked to you Kyra even at a video conference. I'm grateful to God for putting people like you and Adami in my path and I can't wait to go to Brazil to see the Adidas Combat Sports showroom in São Paulo. A big hug to you and the entire team at Zeus Adidas Combat Sports. Sancler Graffit

New studio Klatch opens its doors in West London Post lockdown socialising has boomed up and down the country. According to research commissioned by Klatch, 70 per cent of Brits missed social interactions during the lockdown and 82 percent admitted to going out more than double the amount they did prior to the restrictions. Top of the list of places they missed mixed with family and friends were restaurants (65 per cent), pubs (58 per cent) and gyms (49 per cent). Top 5 ‘most missed’ socialising spots Restaurants (65 per cent) Pubs (58 per cent) Gyms (49 per cent) Cafes (40 per cent) Klatch Studio – West London’s newest film and photography studio Klatch Studio is West London’s newest film and photography studio, having opened its doors just last month to a variety of creative and commercial projects. Situated in Park Royal in the borough of Ealing, surrounded by equipment rental companies and prop stores, Klatch weighs in as a mid-tier studio with its shooting area of 1670 square foot. After two months of renovations, the team at Klatch has transformed a storage space in a warehouse into a well-equipped studio designed with the needs of filmmakers, photographers, and other creatives in mind. The space boasts an 8m x 8m infinity cove, natural lighting or blackout capability, a lighting rig fitted with state-of-the-art LED Chroma-Q space lights, drive-in access, as well as a spacious and colourful green room where cast and crew can relax. The team behind Klatch are a creative duo themselves, with backgrounds in directing and set design respectively. Discussing the launch and their plans for the studio, director and CEO Jake Hatt said, “We launched Klatch with the aim of making production space more accessible and affordable for everyone. We noticed a lack of mid-range studio spaces in West London and wanted to help fill the gap. As filmmakers ourselves we know how important it is to have the right facilities at the right price, especially with smaller projects or student productions for whom the larger studio complexes can be intimidating and out of reach.” What’s in a name? Klatch – a truly social studio The name ‘Klatch’ means ‘an informal gathering’, deriving from the German word for gossip. A sense of community is an important part of the studio’s ethos. “We want the studio to be a comfortable and approachable space in which anyone can create and collaborate,” said Hatt.

Mother /Baby groups (33 per cent) The survey found that Brits now average participate in three social gatherings per week compared to one pre lockdown. A Social Enterprise The studio is social in another way too – Klatch is set up as a social enterprise, meaning a portion of its profits are reinvested into work for charities which fight for social justice across the world. In partnership with the COINS Foundation and the studio’s parent company, Free Bird Film, Klatch’s profits contribute towards projects for charities including Habitat for Humanity and PEAS (Promoting Equality in African Schools). Studio boom Demand for studio space in the UK has been increasing steadily despite the setbacks of the Covid-19 pandemic. Across the UK, a wide range of large studio complexes are currently being built to meet the growing demand, including Eastbrook Studios in Dagenham, SkyStudios in Elstree, and Ashford International Film Studios. Other well-known studios are expanding even further, with Pinewood Group recently unveiling plans for a 1 million square foot expansion of Pinewood and Shepperton studios. Notes to editor The research surveyed 1,000 UK adults aged 18 – 55 between 19th and 30th April 2021. About Klatch – Klatch is a new film and photography studio that has launched in West London. As a social enterprise, the studio reinvests profits into making pro-bono films for charities fighting for social justice and environmental change. Gender pay gap down to 5% in Netherlands, reveals new national survey Jaap van Muijen, Professor of organizational psychology at Nyenrode Business University, says: “The main reason for changing jobs is still money. That’s very understandable in this day and age. The job market is tight, there are plenty of jobs, and employers are doing everything they can to recruit new people. For employees, that means they can ask for more money. This is also necessary, because life is getting more expensive. Think of the inflated housing market, spiking energy prices, and the rising costs of groceries.”

Gender pay gap has halved in two years Amsterdam is taking strides in its efforts towards an equal working environment, with the gender pay gap decreasing over the last years, being 8% in 2019, and falling to 5% in 2021. The National Salary Survey carried out by Intermediair and Nyenrode Business University also reveals that, whilst although men are still more likely to recieve a pay rise than women (56% of men versus 52% of women), this gap too is decreasing. In 2019, the difference in pay rises was double this rate. Another finding was that the higher the education level, the greater the difference in salary between men and women, to the disadvantage of women. The gender pay gap is smallest among people who are less educated and who work in local government, education, and healthcare. Sharita Boon, Commercial Director of DPG Recruitment at Intermediair, says: “The fact that the gender pay gap is smaller this year than it was two years ago, shows that it is an important issue for more and more companies, and that gender equality policies are actually being implemented.” Another interesting finding is that many workers are on the hunt for a new job with higher pay. One-third of workers are open to a new job. Nearly a quarter of women (23%) are actively looking for a job, a 5% increase from 2019. Of the men, nearly 1 in 5 are actively job hunting. The main reason is for higher salary: 1 in 5 workers are not satisfied with their current salary.

The increased pressures of job hunting is a development that employers need to consider, adds Boon: “We see that the number of applicants is tremendously low. The demand for new workers is huge: employees are almost snatched from their office chairs by competitors, so to say. If you, as an employer, want to retain your employees, you have to pay them well.” Another result found was that the pandemic lead to less financial pressures but more emotional and physical complaints. The impact the pandemic had on working people in the Netherlands was evident from the survey: 72% of salaried workers report experiencing effects from the COVID-19 measures. These include emotional pressure or physical complaints. In both cases, the higher the education level, the more pressure and complaints people experienced. Overall, relatively few workers experienced additional financial pressures due to the COVID-19 crisis (11%). One final area that the survey looked into was the effect of working from home on productivity. The current urgent advice for employees is to work from home at least half the time. 58% of respondents say they have a good workspace at home. More men than women have their own workspace at home, and more older people than younger people have a home office. Having your own space to work from home increases the chances of being more productive by as much as 83%. Nearly a third (30%) of respondents said that working from home had a negative effect on productivity, but also nearly a third (30%) actually became more productive. Van Muijen says: “It is clear that we will continue working from home more for the time being, if not forever. This means it is also important to create the most optimal work environment at home, to ensure the highest productivity. Many employers already have dedicated policies. Those who haven’t, will have to develop these policies quickly. I think that compensation for a home office and for working from home in general will also soon be added to the standard benefits package.”

Poor Mental Health Now UK's Most Common Medical Complaint illnesses named the most common medical complaint not discussed with employers across every single generation. Among their concerns, workers cited that they feared people thinking they wouldn’t be able to do their job, that they would be talked about and that ultimately it might cost them their employment. Workers also revealed that they are more concerned about poor mental health impacting them than any other illness, with twice as many respondents worried about the potential impact of poor mental wellbeing than cancer.

Poor mental health is now the most common medical complaint for UK adults, according to new research from not-for-profit healthcare provider, Benenden Health. Mental health illnesses including depression and anxiety were the most commonly reported health condition in the UK during the past two years, with more than a fifth of 25-34 year olds (21%) revealing that they have suffered during this time period, the most of any age group. Similar numbers were reported across the generations with a fifth of 16-24 (19%) and 35-44 year olds (18%) revealing their struggles, along with 16% of 45-54 year olds and one in ten 55+ year olds - the only generation that did not name mental health illnesses top of the list of conditions they have recently experienced. Here, arthritis (14%), was the most commonly reported condition, followed by high blood pressure (12%) and then poor mental health (10%). Following its findings, Benenden Health is warning that the nation is facing a mental health crisis across all generations with the number of older people living with mental illness often unreported. The organisation has launched a new report shedding light on the key health concerns and conditions affecting the nation and offering advice to businesses on how to provide support to all employees. Its survey of 2,000 adults also highlighted that there has been little progress in reducing the stigma associated with discussing mental health - especially in the workplace - with mental health

A quarter of employees said they were concerned about mental health illnesses impacting them (24%), with high blood pressure and cancer (both 12%) completing the top three. This was revealed to be the case across all generations with the exception of 55+ year olds, where only arthritis was named as a bigger worry. Matron at Benenden Health, Cheryl Lythgoe, said: “Exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, the nation’s mental health is at a perilous point, with UK adults revealing it to now be the most common condition in the country and also the one medical complaint that they are most concerned about, with this far from restricted to younger generations. “Throughout each generation, mental wellbeing needs to be a significant priority in order to stem this flow and we need to look at ensuring that everyone has the necessary – and tailored – support to suit their needs. “If you are living with symptoms of poor mental health or are concerned about them developing, please do not be afraid to tell someone – whether this is someone you know or a medical professional - as you are far from alone and in doing so, you are taking the first step towards understanding the root cause of the illness and getting the necessary support.” Benenden Health is a not-for-profit organisation offering high quality, private healthcare at the same affordable cost for everyone. This includes round the clock care such as 24/7 GP and Mental Health helplines, plus speedy access to services such as physiotherapy and medical treatment. Business woman turns ‘Mother Christmas’ to save companies’ festive parties “I know from my own experience just how difficult these past months have been, not just for the events industry, but also for lots more sectors and I have made it my mission to save Christmas for companies – with an extra-special online celebration.” Emma says Events in a Box brings an innovative and uniquely adaptable new approach to parties. She says teams can still have a great night – without any Covid-related concerns. Emma launched the fledgling company amid lockdown restrictions as her respected events bookings ground to a halt. Working around the clock to pivot her business, Emma gained 4,000 orders last December for corporate gift boxes, including a range of carefully chosen items to help staff feel special. Twelve months on, Events in a Box has evolved to offer a wealth of opportunities to party, all in a way that allows people to join the fun from their own home.

A businesswoman is on a mission to save corporate Christmas celebrations as a nation of festive parties face the axe. A new venture from events expert Emma Jones is set to keep Christmas alive for cautious UK companies whose teams aren’t ready to live it up in a face to face celebration. With demand slumping for face-to-face office and corporate Christmas get-togethers, Emma, director of Birmingham-based AllinAll Events (https://www.all-in-all.co.uk/) and her flourishing new company, Events in a Box, (https://eventsinabox.co/) aims to bring peace of mind. According to a new survey of UK workers nationwide, just 36% said their workplace is holding a Christmas party this year. Some have been cancelled altogether while others are planned for into 2022 when bosses feel safer avoiding potentially ‘super spreading’ bashes. Emma said: That’s a lot of people going without a good night out and business owners not saying ‘thank you’. After 18 months of stress and uncertainty, what better way to lift spirits than a fantastic party? “Unfortunately, despite larger gatherings being allowed this year, many companies are opting to play it safe and not organise a big knees-up. “We all know companies who have had a very tough time. But they are still here and moving forward with hope and optimism. Why shouldn’t they celebrate together and let their staff know how grateful they are?

“We all know there’s loads of options for people to have a party online but from a corporate event planning point of view, you really have to be careful that you don’t end up disappointed. “What’s particularly innovative about Events in a Box is the high level of personalisation. It is vital that people feel appreciated as an individual, and that’s exactly what we make happen, however many people are invited. “Since we introduced our gift boxes we’ve excelled through being flexible – we provided care boxes for students from across the UK as well as working on a large virtual event and box delivery working alongside top chef Glynn Purnell. “It’s this adaptability and attention to detail that we pride ourselves on with our events – we have years of experience making high-profile, large-scale and more exclusive, in-person gatherings extra special. Now we help companies provide that excellence online as well.” Along with fellow director, Mark O’Sullivan, who has joined Events in a Box, to drive the business forward, Emma is now recruiting a business development manager, due to growing demand. “We are beyond excited to see what this next stage of our business brings,” said Emma. “And making unforgettable Christmas parties still happen for companies who care about giving their team something to remember for the right reasons,” is a big part of that. Vaccine mandate sends application numbers tumbling at critical time of year In comparison, Broadbean’s statistics indicate that the number of people applying for roles in healthcare dropped by 25% between October and November and is down by 42% year-on-year. This is indicative of the impact of the Government's recent decision to make Covid-19 vaccines mandatory for those working in the health and social care sector. The data has also shown a similar trend for medical and nursing vacancies, with a 4% increase in available jobs between October and November and a rise of 45% year-on-year. Comparatively, applications saw an 18% decrease between October and November and a 63% year-on-year decline last month. As Alex Fourlis, Managing Director at Broadbean Technology explained:

Monday 20 December 2021 The number of people applying for jobs in the UK dropped 25% in November as vacancies continued to increase, putting future economic growth at risk. That’s according to the latest real-time statistics from the world’s largest network of job boards, Broadbean Technology. This decline in applications comes at a time when the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has reported another record increase in hiring, with vacancies in September to November 2021 rising to a new record of 1,219,000. Health and social care hit hard According to the data, social care saw a 5% increase in vacancies between October and November and is up 50% year-on-year. This is in line with the ONS which revealed that the human health and social work sector has reported its greatest quarterly growth in vacancies.

“The ongoing shortage of talent is a concern for the UK. We’re experiencing a significant and sustained increase in hiring activity that is draining already limited talent pools, with some sectors certainly feeling the impact more than others. The decline in applications across social and healthcare is worrying at a time when the Omicron variant is putting further pressure in the care and medical professions. The vaccination mandate across social care and planned mandate for the general healthcare sector has only exacerbated the dearth of talent at a critical time.” ENDS Press contact Sadie McGrath sadie@bluesky-pr.com 01582 790 70

Lack of education reduces life expectancy Higher educational inequality is linked to more inequality in life expectancy, according to new research by Vienna University of Economics and Business. The research, conducted by researchers Clemens Danler and Katharina Pfaff, examined the relationship between inequality in education and inequality in life expectancy in 31 European countries. The study revealed that countries whose population have unequal levels of education, are also more likely to be unequal in their life expectancy. It highlights that not only education is a crucial factor for health outcomes, but also whether everyone has equal chances for education. For this reason, the researchers recommend policy makers to address educational inequalities when intending to flatten out inequalities in life expectancies. “Equal access to education, fair evaluation of performance, and an inclusive school system that does not favour people of a certain socio-economic background are factors that can be influenced by adequate policies,” says Katharina Pfaff. The researchers say that the standardisation of education, examination procedures, and grading systems can create a uniform standard and equal opportunities, as long as assessors are objective. “When intergenerational mobility within a country is not perfect, educational policies are a powerful public health tool which individuals can profit from throughout their lifetime,” says Katharina Pfaff. 51

LOVE THE BODY YOU’RE IN — FOR LIFE.How listening t Margo; dietitian Dr Carrie Ruxton; women’s health expert Dr Catherine Hood; and personal trainer Chris Ruxton — to review the research and provide evidence-based support on the best ways to build and maintain musculoskeletal strength and resilience. Their roadmap to muscle and joint wellbeing signposts the key times in our lives that can be turning points on the path to an active and pain-free life. And they suggest strategies, self-care solutions and diet and lifestyle tips to help to keep us all moving — despite the times, and irrespective of our time of life.

Ageing is inevitable. But there’s a lot of truth in the adage that we are only as old as we feel — and a new research report - Loving Our Bodies Inside Out: Why It’s Important to Support Our Muscles And Joints During All Life Stages - Why We All Need To Listen To Our Bodies shows we could be doing a lot more to feel fit, healthy and fabulous from the inside out. Injury, illness, and the genes we inherit from our parents all impact our muscle and joint health. And the past 18 months of reduced opportunities to exercise, working or studying from home, and additional lockdown weight have taken their toll, too. Physiotherapist Sammy Margo warns, “The dangers of sedentary lifestyles are not simply due to reduced calorie burning; habitual inactivity leads to a slew of health issues known collectively as hypokinetic diseases.” Research for Mentholatum, the brains behind the Deep Heat and Deep Freeze, the go to thermotherapy and cooling topical solutions our bodies need to help keep us active found that: • More than 6 in 10 adults reported muscular troubles • 50% struggled with joint stiffness • Only 45% manage a daily walk, and • One in five sit for hours on end without getting up and stretching to ease muscle fatigue. But the good news is that it’s never too late to take control. That’s why Deep Heat has recruited a team of experts with hands-on experience — physiotherapist and sleep specialist Sammy

The study years: teens and early 20s The latest research1 for Deep Heat, the topical heat therapy specialists with a range of products that people swear by whatever age, revealed that two out of five (40%) of 18- to 29-year-olds have reported an increase in back problems over the previous year1.And 47% of 18- to-29-year-olds have to rest due to lower leg, ankle, or foot pain. University of Bath researchers found that 12% of adolescents experience a severe episode of pain. One in five adults living with pain experienced untreated pain in adolescence. Common triggers for muscle problems at this age are: • Participation in jogging or football which can lead to pulled hamstrings or tight calves. • Hunching over a smartphone, tablet, or laptop screen, causing shoulder and neck issues. • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from studying at a laptop or spending too long texting. Personal Trainer Chris Ruxton advises: “Head off study pain and discomfort by keeping flexible and avoiding poor posture,” and recommends the cat cow stretch, especially after desk work: On your hands and knees, gently arch your back by dropping your hips and allowing your belly to relax. Remember to pull your shoulders back. After holding and breathing for a few seconds, now reverse and arch your back like a cat by tucking in your tailbone and drawing your belly up with your head relaxed forward. Breathe and repeat 8-10 times. Deep thinking: Many parents are, understandably, cautious about giving medication to teens and young people experiencing muscular discomfort — so drug-free products such as Deep Heat Pain Relief Patches can help ease aches and pains. To

52

to your body helps head off aches down the ages cool tired legs and feet after a day’s play on the pitch or track and field training, products like Deep Freeze Glide-On Gel offer soothing relief. The juggling years: the 20s, 30s and 40s A third (35%) of 30- to 40-year-olds who took part in the Deep Heat research poll reported an increase in back problems over the previous year1. A third (35%) of 35- to 44-year-olds have had lower back pain. And 10% have struggled with shoulder or upper back pain. It’s hardly surprising when 50% of people working from home use a laptop sitting on a sofa or armchair and 33% work in bed. Three-quarters of 30- to 44-year-olds know the warning signs that their body is telling them to slow down or give it some TLC — but if they were in pain or discomfort, 55% would not miss a work meeting and 46% would not cancel a social engagement.

Get on all fours, knees under hips, hands under shoulders. Curl toes under and tilt your pelvis down. This will encourage your tailbone to stick up. As you do so, take your gaze up to the ceiling. Hold for 10. Then, bring that pelvis forward, round your back and bring your gaze down, so you’re staring at your belly button. Hold for 10 again and repeat both cat and cow, twice more. Midlife Losing 0.5 to 2% of muscle mass a year is a normal part of ageing from the 40s and 50s. Obesity is an added risk factor as an increase in body weight can put extra pressure on joints. Muscle weakness in older people costs the UK around £2.5billion annually in extra healthcare . The Deep Heat research found, 47% of adults aged 60 and over have to rest due to lower leg, ankle or foot pain. And more than a quarter (26%) have experienced muscle strain or sprain.

Common triggers for muscle problems at this age are: • Sleeping positions that are not supportive enough e.g. saggy mattresses and old limp pillows, leading to back and neck aches. Back problems due to ergonomically unsound home working environments. • Back, neck, foot, ankle, and calf issues caused by driving with a bad posture for hours without breaks to stretch. • Prolonged stress can trap us in a cycle of cortisol production (a stress hormone), chronic inflammation, and pain.

Common causes of muscle and joint pain at this age are: • Wear and tear as part of the normal ageing process. • Weight gain and obesity putting extra pressure on the joints. • Lack of muscle-strengthening exercises to support the skeleton.

Sammy suggests: “Using topical treatments at home can provide a quick solution to discomfort. For example, Deep Heat Pain Relief Heat Patch is a convenient drug-free adhesive patch that can be worn comfortably under work clothes to relieve aches, while Deep Heat Max Strength combines soothing heat with pain-killing ingredient, methyl salicylate.”

Chris says: “Everyone can benefit from resistance or strength exercises, regardless of age or fitness. Strength work, which is simple to learn from a Personal Trainer or in a CrossFit class, helps to maintain muscle health and core stability which are the foundations of good posture. Basically, when it comes to muscle tone, you can use it or lose it.”

Women’s health expert, Dr Catherine Hood adds: “Our mental health is just as important as our physical health – and, in fact, the two are interconnected because unhappiness, stress and depression can change our posture and have a negative impact on our muscular health.”

To promote muscle and joint mobilisation without weights, try: Leg swings: Standing straight, holding a wall for support, swing your left leg back and forth. Repeat for 10 swings. Then swap legs. You should find that each swing allows your leg to go a little higher, increasing the range of movement at the joint.

Chris advises: “Lower back pain is often a sign that your sitting position needs realignment so make sure you’re not slumping when using a laptop and computer or watching TV.” Try cat cow stretches, a classic yoga pose:

• The effects of other life stages catching up if you haven’t taken care of your musculoskeletal health during early adulthood.

Menopause

53

Hormone changes during this life stage can lead to fluid retention, decreased bone mineral density and weight gain, as well as unexpected muscle aches. Dr Catherine Hood says: “During early menopause — when the decline in oestrogen becomes irreversible — chronic pain can affect fingers, wrists and knees. Muscle decline also impacts joints and makes sprains and strains more likely. This is because our muscles are essential for core strength and posture. Poor muscle tone leads to poor posture, especially when lifting, carrying, and moving.” Reduced muscle mass and tone, increased body fat, lower bone mineral density, and inflammation in the joints can all prompt pain and swelling. Common problems associated with menopause are: • Aches (68%) • Stiffness (54%) • Pain (27%) • Joint swelling (20%) . Chris says: target abdominal bloating and tighten the core with a Dead Bug movement: lying on your back with knees up, stretch out your left leg and right arm while bringing your shoulders off the floor. Hold for 5-10 seconds and change leg/arm. Hold again for 5-10 seconds. Keep switching legs and arms for 2-3 minutes and repeat a few times a week.” See the full report for more examples of exercises to help ease aching joints and muscles. When pain is a problem Deep Heat’s research found four in 10 people with joint and muscle problems take regular pain pills and a fifth take prescription painkillers. While this may provide some short-term relief, it is not recommended as a long-term solution. Postural alignment and correctional specialist, Jan Keller, says: “With studies showing that around one in five people with lower back pain visits their GP in search of relief, this also puts an enormous strain on an already struggling NHS. There has never been a greater need for increased awareness around prevention and appropriate self-care.” Deep Heat, the topical heat therapy specialists have a range of products that ticks all the boxes when it comes to effective and targeted relief for muscle and joint troubles. The Deep Heat range comes in handy formats to suit all needs including:

• Deep Heat Pain Relief Heat Patch — a long-lasting, adhesive patch, which is drug-free, comfortable and odourless • New Deep Heat Warming Belt — a discrete, non-sticky warming belt with four large heat cells which provide up to 12 hours of deep penetrating warmth to relieve muscular aches, pains, and t ension. Particularly useful for lower back or hip pain • Deep Heat Muscle Massage Roll-on Lotion – a handy roll-on drug-free version, which combines massage with heat therapy to help ease tight, knotted muscles. It can be used before or after exercise • Deep Heat Pain Relief Spray — an easy-to-use heat therapy spray which is great for helping to relieve pain in the muscles, tendons, joints or bones, lower back, and thigh pain, sprains, or strains • Deep Heat Heat Pain Relief Rub — a rub that provides targeted pain relief and can be used before or after exercise. It also helps with stiffness including back and rheumatic pain, sciatica, fibro sitis, sprains and chilblains • Deep Heat Max Strength — offers more than double the amount of the pain-killing ingredient, methyl salicylate. And it generates penetrating warmth in aching, injured and sore muscles. Sleep right Sammy Margo warns: “Pain and sleep issues can become a downward spiral — we are tired, so we sit more, and perhaps eat more, then our muscles and joints become more painful, and it affects our sleep. “The cycle needs to be broken so, even if you’re feeling tired and depressed, try to keep moving, try some stretches and focus on a good posture. Topical solutions can help to target localised pain and the Deep Heat range provides fast, effective targeted relief with the relaxing benefits of heat therapy. That’s why they are my go-to self-care essential.” Listen up Chris says: “Whatever stage in life we’re at, it’s clear from the Deep Heat research that no age group completely escapes the possibility of developing a pain in the neck, back, foot, ankle, or one of the many other parts of our body.” Sammy points out: “We already have huge numbers of people reporting problems, and this will continue to rise as a result of prolonged periods of inactivity, combined with an ageing and increasingly obese population.” That’s why it’s so important to keep active, while always listening to your body for any signals that it needs some extra attention. The time-tested Deep Heat and Deep Freeze ranges provide simple, non-medical self-care support for joints and muscles.

5 Steps to increase your net worth by changing your view on money.

I love hearing people talk about money, its amazing how far divided we are in the way we think of ‘wealth’. For some people understandably a million is a ‘dream’ when for others a million isn’t ‘rich’ anymore. With constant inflation and over population, 1 million in most western capitals, some would say will barely afford you a reasonable house and comfortable way of living and yet its still the benchmark for so many. Yes, you could right now most properly retire in a less economically developed country, where the cost of living is far less. Should however you have a million in your pot and retire now at 60, living lucky to the ripe old age of 100, 1 million spread over 40 years is just £25,000 a year. This is £13,600 under the average UK salary according to the ONS, which comes in at a surprising £38,600. If you factor inflation into the equation, you wont be living the dream, you may well be struggling to afford simple things. What does it matter? Money is just money after all? Yes and no. Personally I would say that of course money itself cant buy you happiness, mainly because the things that make us

most the happiest are the things you cant buy, like love, family and friendship. That said, money gives us options, and choice is the major factor that gives us freedom. The more option, the less we are limited, the further we can pursue our own voice. In some communities, some cultures, some echelons of society they hear ‘money’ as a dirty word. The easily offended are mostly restricted by their limited passed down belief learnings. The power of money, capital, wealth is incredible, it holds the keys to solving inequality, to funding future benefiting technology and healthcare research but more importantly investment in education. Yes greed, over reflections of abundance are rightly ill-natured in contrast to poverty and suffering, but this is the veneer. The veneer is the impression of wealth, what it means, what we believe it ‘looks’ like. For the younger generation on Instagram, I believe they call it ‘flexing’. The deeper you go into the psychology of the veneered segment, those

56

few trapped in a pocket, the clearer you see that the excesses are really just reflections of need. ‘Wealth’ to a high proportion of these many, means importance, adoration, and by a deeper motive ‘love’, its primitively wired, and yet so sad to see as reality. However real wealth aculelators, some who may have initially journeyed through this veneer, ultimately have the self-actualisation of what money means. Money is options and by way of options and freedom, its power and therefore responsibility. This is why most Billionaires of the world, don’t have a gold wrapped car, or Gucci belt between them, ‘lavish’ isnt in their peripheral, in the most part they got to where they are by solving a problem or adding value to the world. They go onward mostly into philanthropic areas. When you are fundamentally wired to give you receive, many don’t understand this. So how is this relevant to you and helping you reach your goals, not your ‘dreams’ because dreams are just that, what you have at night, when you close your eyes. Goals are when you keep your eyes open and take action and head toward an objective. Well, its in the way you think about money, about your business. Through working with many very highly successful businesspeople in the course of my career and having huge progression in my own situation, here are my tips to add more zeros to your net worth. 1. This is the most important step. FORGET WHAT OTHERS THINK (That was so important I had to shout it out in capital letters). Ask yourself this, ‘Who do I live for?’ – Its not your friends your neibours, even really your outer family, its for you and your close family. Therefore, stop needing to tell the world you have arrived, by wearing the latest designer top, driving the car you cant really afford.. Unless these things are of huge importance directly to you, because they don’t mean anything to anyone else on a higher level. Once you deal more directly with the reason you are so concerned with other peoples view of you, then you are free to care for your own mental well being and decide a route to goal. 2. Leverage – This is a huge one and a word you will see in countless business books. What it truly is, is knowing your time is limited, use money power or people power. I could be wrong but I don’t think there is any freelance billionaires, what I mean by that is if your in design, if your in investing, if your in practically any industry, if you expand and use people to create outcome you can focus on the business and growing rather than working in the business. 3. Invest your money. (I must note, I’m not a financial advisor so please seek your own advice on this one, this is my opinion for what its worth) Its sounds odd, but making money is only the initial step. Cold hard cash sitting in the bank, isnt healthy, there is as I mentioned previously inflation and interest rates aren’t great. Rather than let your money lose its

value, look to investing. Investing is a wide and open category, you can opt for anything from investing in traditional stocks and shares, or daringly as you will crypto (which has positive arguments) or even property or fine art and wine (just don’t drink the wine one night when your feeling stressed). Whatever you do invest in, it should be an area your passionate about or understand, you need to think about the future, if you are wanting a safer bet with reasonable earning look towards ETFs. 4. Understand compound effect, if we talk in dollars for the example and I gave you the options between $2 million now or a penny that doubled for just 30 days, many of you may opt for the millions, unless you know the power of compounding of course. That right $5,368,709.12 and if you were to double it for 2 months, 60 days thats even crazier its $6,300,478,422,152,314.88, which is around 20 times the global world debt of $247 Trillion Dollars, going records a few years old (it’s likely somewhat less now, with the pandemic fuelled money printing.). What this is designed to illustrate and it’s used by many coaches, is the power of compounding. How something small, repeatedly can make monumental results. This why one of the greatest minds in my option of our time Albert Einstein said ‘’compound interest is the 8th wonder of the world.’’ Knowing the power of your actions and small steps is what can and will define your achieving your goals. Whether it’s blogging a little every day, going to the gym every day, writing a book bit by bit. Everything in this world of monumental greatness took time, remember that. 5. Give back – its sounds cliché and overly popularised, but its so important. Its my unfaltering belief that religion aside we are truly all one. While we all speak different tongues and celebrate different differences, we are all united in being one entity. Everything on this planet on one level resonates to the same frequency. By giving back we balance the energies. Its too easier to look out on the world and see suffering of others as distant and unattached, this is wrong. Its like your eyes looking down at the cut on your foot and not feeling the same pain. Too many people look at injustice, suffering and inequality and think ‘why?’, really they should be thinking ‘how?’ , ‘How can I help?’. Just because you don’t know a stranger’s name, doesn’t mean he’s not your brother. In summary, you can increase your wealth, your net worth, with steps and ways of thinking, to better your life and the lives of those around you. Know that true wealth however is more that the veneer. If you want to be ‘Rich’, if you want to go from zero to a million or from where you are to a billion, the key within all of this is to understand why. Because if you know why, you will work out the how! If you have enjoyed my article and want some further reading in this area, please checkout my book ‘Think it. Pitch it. Sell it.’ Available on amazon.

‘Pick and mix’ technology promises future-proof universal vaccines against COVID and more For example, the company recently partnered with DNA vaccine pioneers Touchlight to develop a universal coronavirus vaccine aimed at tackling the emergence of new variants and preventing future pandemics. Back in January 2020, the Baseimmune team fed the small amount of existing data about SARS-CoV-2 into their algorithm, which correctly predicted major variants such as Alpha and Delta that would not emerge for another year.

LONDON, UK - Imperial College-based biotech startup Baseimmune has secured USD4.8m funding to develop the next generation of future-proof universal vaccines against major human and animal diseases. Around 1.5 million people die every year around the world due to a lack of effective vaccines.* There is an urgent need to develop better universal vaccines against existing diseases, including, COVID, flu and malaria, as well as future-proof vaccines that can cope with the emergence of new threats and variants. *It’s all about the antigen* Vaccines work by training the immune system to recognise and respond to infection with a specific pathogen, such as a virus, parasite or bacteria. At the heart of every vaccine is an antigen - a small, safe molecule based on part of the pathogen, which triggers the protective immune response. Most vaccine antigens are based on a single pathogen component, such as the spike protein of the COVID SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus or the coat protein of the malaria parasite, which limits their effectiveness and ability to cope with new variants. To solve this problem, Baseimmune’s vaccine design algorithm crunches genomic, epidemiological, immunological, clinical and evolutionary data together to create entirely new synthetic antigens containing all the parts of the pathogen that are most likely to evoke a strong protective immune response. These ‘pick and mix’ antigens effectively present the immune system with a toolkit of everything it is likely to need to know about how to recognise and respond to a particular pathogen, both now and in the future. The antigen designs can then be fed into any vaccine technology platform, including mRNA, DNA and viral vectors, to create universal future-proof vaccines that should be effective against all current and likely variants.

Co-founder Phillip Kemlo, the software engineer who built the company's AI prediction algorithm, says, “The major problem with current vaccines is that they aren’t designed to account for the evolutionary arms race that occurs between pathogens and the human immune system, and can’t protect against future variants or new mutations. Our prediction algorithm addresses all of these challenges, accelerating the creation of vaccines that are as good as they possibly can be and will stand up to whatever variants may come in the future.” *Universal vaccines for malaria, COVID and more* Baseimmune was founded in 2019 to design and develop universal future-proof vaccines for human and animal infections including malaria, COVID and African Swine Fever. The latest investment round, led by Hoxton Ventures and including early investors Creator Fund, will enable the company to grow, developing more vaccines in parallel and further expanding the number of diseases it is able to tackle. The company grew out of research by Dr Josh Blight and Dr Ariane Gomes, who met while doing their PhDs at the prestigious Jenner Institute at Oxford University and teamed up with software engineer Phillip Kemlo to build the antigen design algorithm. Co-founder Josh Blight says, “Vaccines are a powerful tool for eradicating infectious diseases, yet every year millions of lives are still lost or irreversibly changed worldwide due to preventable infections. We know vaccines work - we just need better ones against more diseases if we’re to truly make a difference to global health.” Co-founder Ariane Gomes says, “I grew up in Brazil and saw first-hand the impact of infectious disease as my aunt lived her whole life with the devastating effects of polio, a vaccine-preventable disease. The COVID pandemic has reminded us that infectious diseases aren’t going anywhere, so we urgently need to develop the next generation of vaccines to help protect us all.” Scientific advisor Jake Baum, Professor of Cell Biology and Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London, who is collaborating with the team to create an entirely new malaria vaccine, adds, “Vaccine research is often obsessed with developing new delivery methods, with little innovation in the underlying antigens that drive immunity. Innovations in antigen selection by computation have only just started, and companies like Baseimmune are blazing the trail.”

BEYONCE.

roots, culture, skin, music I was reminded to appreciate who I am after feeling for such a long time not worthy because I didn’t meet societal definition of beauty because of my skin. She created a cultural shift. She has been very vocal on the standards of beauty set by the society especially since she has experienced that discrimination on the industry that she is in. Where a lot of emphasis is put on how you look and what you wear; she has admitted to her being insecure and at some point, curving to that pressure. Activism. Black lives Matter, Mental Health Awareness, Women Empowerment are movements she rallies behind. We can see it through her music but also through her BeyGood Foundation. She has contributed millions of funds to help with injustices, COVID-19 and recently the Texas storm. She also. supports small black owned business

Beyonce is an embodiment. Embodiment of success, hard work, women empowerment, activism and strength. Her story begins on 4th September 1981 in Houston, Texas. A story that is filled with hard work from age of 7, 3 decades later, 8 albums and hundreds of millions of records sold worldwide. Her music is what introduced her to us but it’s more than just music, it’s a movement. It deals with women empowerment, deals with activism, success, hard-work, black lives and strength. “I wanna say I lived each day, until I die And know that I meant something in somebody's life The hearts I have touched will be the proof that I leave That I made a difference, and this world will see” …Beyonce “I was here” lyrics I want to go ahead and say she has lived, she was here, she has left a legacy, she has made a difference; through her music, the platform she has created, through her BeyGood Foundation. Beauty. I connect with Beyonce on so many levels. But recently, she made me fall in love with my skin all over again. Black is king is a cultural phenomenon a celebration of black

Hard Work. I don’t know about you but when I need to get up and get things done, a Beyonce song will get me up. It is the hard work she put in her work, it’s the access to “spice of fabrics” ha-ha for me. Beychella is a show of hard work, we see the product and we see the journey to making the product. The journey of hard work, sacrifice, resilience and having a vision. We can sit and debate if you love her music but we can never argue on the hard work she puts in, the sweat and details in her work. Platform. There is no denying that she has a platform. A platform of access to resources and whenever she can, she gives access to people who need and deserve that platform. She has always given young artists a chance to showcase their talents. Recently on her Coachella performance, she gave many artists, musicians, and dancers a chance to showcase their talents. I can’t forget the time she went to great lengths to find Tofo Tofo dancers from Mozambique who appeared on her “run the world” music video because she saw talent in them. Oh! And her “Black is King” visual album. She featured various artists from Africa to portray the African culture and music. The platform she gives usually helps in opening doors for most of the artists to a world they had no access to. In the society we are living in now, there is a lot of entitlement going around on celebrities’ personal lives and some submit to the pressure on the fear of being irrelevant but Beyonce has created that line for years in her career without bowing to the pressure and if there is a story she has to tell, she tells it through her work. Her work speaks!!! Beyonce has left a legacy that will live on to future generations!!!

Lockdown Home Cooking Enthusiasts Find Entrepreneurial Spirit Thanks to New App

People across the north who have reignited or found a new passion for cooking at home have been able to set up their own home cooking businesses thanks to the launch of a new app. The new app, Feedzaa, is an online marketplace designed to give food lovers access to fresh, home cooked food in West Yorkshire, Manchester, Birmingham and Newcastle. Because it is tailored for passionate cooks who may not necessarily be trained, the app supports home chefs to get their kitchens up to the hygiene standards needed and promote their dishes directly to a well receiving audience. Every home chef on Feedzaa who has been inspected by their council’s EHO has received a 5/5 rating.

Throughout the pandemic, people across the nation reignited or found a new passion for cooking. Being stuck at home with little to do, people began to keep themselves busy by starting or revisiting a hobby they usually wouldn’t have time to commit to in ‘normal’ times. For many people, that meant picking up their aprons and letting loose in the kitchen making everything from viral banana bread to their family's traditional recipes that span back generations. Kajal, a home chef who offers Mauritian cuisine said, “I started on the app a few months ago during lockdown. I have always been very passionate about cooking and wanted people to know more about Mauritian cuisine. Feedzaa provided me

the platform to do so and I’m very grateful for that.” For those who want to pursue their new found passion, Feedzaa is a tool to help them run their own home business. The business remains theirs. The support structure and friendly Feedzaa community helps them get to grips with running a business. Kalpna, owner of K Catering, is a 60-year-old who enjoys cooking in the moments she’s not babysitting her granddaughter. After finding the time to cook again through the pandemic, Kalpna said: “Due to the lockdown this hobby made time pass much easier, and it also ensured I was able to receive some additional income. This platform gave me more anchorage, confidence, and moral support.” The Feedzaa app has recently gone live following a beta phase in Leeds, which saw over 1240 orders being placed by customers. While the app started with a focus on Indian cuisine in the beta phase, Feedzaa’s founders have now extended the service to a wider range of cuisines such as Chinese and Homebakes, in addition to Indian. The choices were made on the back of customer market research. Co-founder of Feedzaa Priya Vishwa said: “Feedzaa has been successful due to the fact it offers those passionate about cooking the opportunity to start their own business from home, providing tools and expert knowledge to help them grow and gain confidence to showcase your talent. “It is also beneficial for those looking for more flexible work for a better work-life balance. “Not only does the app create a community of people who appreciate authentic food, but it will also give those who’ve reignited their passion for cooking during the pandemic a chance to be celebrated.

“Running your business from home, and working your chosen hours is something rare in the hospitality industry – which Feedzaa allows. “ From a customer point of view, Feedzaa allows families in the north to access fresh, home-cooked traditional cuisines from all over the world, something which they otherwise would not have access to. Pushing back against the typical takeaway, Feedzaa offers home-cooked and healthy meals as one offs or as regular, pre-planned meal options. Priya added: “We’ve already welcomed some amazing home chefs to our community, as we expand across the nation, we want to ensure that all cultures are represented. "People love authentic home-cooked food, but they often find it hard to access either due to lack of time, availability of ingredients, or simply not knowing the recipe. “With Feedzaa, we’re removing all of those barriers. The app itself allows food lovers to browse the profiles of home chefs, and food can be ordered on a specified date and time. “From a chef perspective, registered home chefs are able to create a profile detailing their hygiene rating, cuisines, and location as well as photos of their delicious meals to attract their customers.” Feedzaa is now particularly looking for home bakers, Indian and Chinese home chefs from West Yorkshire, Birmingham, Manchester and Newcastle. Those interested in joining the Feedzaa community can do so at www.feedzaa.com

5 Tips for Those Struggling with Debt after Christmas

Holly Andrews, Managing Director at KIS Finance and finance expert, outlines her tips for people who are struggling with debt after relying on credit over Christmas.

used one of Klarna’s instalments or financing options, for example.

The first thing you need to do to get on top of your debt is to sit down and work out exactly how much you owe and to who.

Again, it may be difficult to look at your debts in black and white, and this might make you feel more stressed in the short term if the total is more than you thought. But trust me when I say that you are now already in a better financial position than before.

You may find it beneficial to create a spreadsheet so you can list each loan/credit card/BNPL, the total balance, and either the minimum payment amount or any set monthly repayments. Set monthly repayments would be applicable if you’ve

Start by focusing on minimum paments If you have a considerable number of loans and credit cards, then it can be quite daunting to look at the total amount you owe.

Get organised and keep track

To make things feel more manageable, start by just looking at the minimum payment amount on each debt. This is the amount that you have to pay each month to avoid missed payment fees being added. It’s important that you avoid these fees if you want to prevent the debt from building up more quickly, and missing payments can also have a lasting negative impact on your credit score. You should also set up a direct debit for the minimum amount each month for each credit card/loan that gives you this option. Doing this means you will never be charged missed payment fees even if you forget one month as the minimum payment will be made every month automatically. Once the minimum amount is paid, you can then pay whatever you can afford on top. Only paying the minimum amount each month means it will take a long time to repay the debt, so you really need to pay as much as you can over this. Not only will it bring down the debt faster, but it will also save you money in interest. Prioritise When you’re working out your debt repayment strategy, you need to organise and prioritise which debts are the most important to repay. These may be the loans or credit cards with the biggest balances, or the ones that charge the highest interest rate. Then you need to decide whether you want to try and pay off everything together, or to focus one debt at a time until each one is repaid. If you choose this method then you should start with the loan/credit card that you’ve put at the top of your priority list, putting as much as you can towards this each month, and then work down the list after each one is cleared. Remember though to keep paying at least the minimum amount on each other loan/credit card to avoid missed payment fees. You will also still need to keep paying any set monthly repayments if you’ve

used Buy Now Pay Later services. Consolidate If you’re struggling to manage your debts, then it might be worth looking into a consolidation loan or credit card. Consolidating your debts means paying off all of your loans and credit cards with one single credit facility. This will make managing your debts much easier as you’ll only have one loan, and therefore one monthly payment, to think about. If you can find a lender that is offering a loan or credit card with 0% APR introductory period, then you could save a lot of money on interest too. This means that if you pay off the full amount within the offer period, you won’t pay any interest. Just make sure you know what the APR will be after the offer period though, as you need to ensure that this is better than the interest you’re currently paying. Seek help Admitting you’re in debt can be difficult, but there’s no need to struggle in silence. The past couple of years have been very difficult and financially demanding for many, and you are definitely not alone. If you can’t speak to close family members or trusted friends about your problems, then there are organisations and charities that can help if your situation is particularly bad and you don’t know what to do. This may be if you are consistently in debt and struggling to meet repayments. These are some organisations available: -Citizens Advice -StepChange Debt Charity -National Debtline
