HepatitisB Diabetes&

Hepatitis B is inflammation of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus.

Diabetes is a chronic disease where there's too much glucose in your blood. Type 1 diabetes happens when your body can’t produce insulin.Type 2 diabetes occurs when your body can’t make enough insulin, or use it properly Insulin is produced by the pancreas.

The relationship between chronic hepatitis B and diabetes is not clearly established but some studies have found a higher rate of diabetes in people with hepatitis B than the general population.

Studies have also shown that pregnant women with hepatitis B have a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes.

These health conditions could be due to liver cell injury caused by the hepatitis B virus. One of the of the liver’s jobs is to keep glucose levels normal in the bloodstream and that function could be impaired when liver cells are damaged.

In addition to that, people with diabetes are at increased risk of getting hepatitis B if they share blood glucose meters, fingerstick devices or other diabetescare equipment such as syringes or insulin pens.

What can I do?

If someone in your household has hepatitis B, or if you share diabetes-care equipment, get tested for hepatitis B.

If the test shows you have no immunity to hepatitis B, get vaccinated.
