CITY GUIDE

The Hague is well-known as the seat of the Dutch government, the so-called residence. And also as the home of a large number of foreign embassies and international organizations. Thanks to the International Criminal Court and the Peace Palace The Hague is also known as a city of peace and justice. And in recent years it has become a business hub thanks to the growing importance of the financial industry in the city. The Hague has much more to offer though. Especially for travellers who come to the city for a short (or long) visit. With a history going back almost 1,000 years, the so-called Hofstad (court city) has many impressive monumental buildings and sights: the Binnenhof (houses of parliament) and the Ridderzaal (the former courtyard of Count Floris V), Gevangenpoort (the ancient city prison and nowadays Torture Museum), miniature city Madurodam and the royal palace on Noordeinde. The many museums in the city are of exceptionally high quality. Take art house Mauritshuis – home of Johannes Vermeer’s world-famous ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ and the ‘Stier van Potter’ (The real life painting of a bull by seventeenth-century painter Paulus Potter). Or the municipal museum of contemporary art, Gemeente Museum, and Escher in het Paleis – the former residential palace of the queen and nowadays an exhibition completely devoted to the work of mathematical illustrator M.C. Escher. Are you more into music, dance and dramatic art? The Hague has plenty to offer. De Koninklijke Schouwburg, the completely renovated Royal Theater, is a must-see. As is the Lucent Dans Theater, home of the worldfamous NDT, the Nederlands Dans Theater. And big-screen movie theatre Omniversum. With 500,000 inhabitants, The Hague is the third largest city in the Netherlands (after Amsterdam and Rotterdam, which both have close to three quarters of a million inhabitants) and it has a vibrant nightlife. You’ll find hundreds of cosy little restaurants and bars, and cosmopolitan clubs throughout the city. Enjoy dinner at some of the very best restaurants in the country; The Hague is the country’s centre of Indonesian cuisine, thanks to the many people of Indonesian descent living in the city. Nowadays, and especially in the vicinity of the compact Chinatown, the number of Chinese and Japanese restaurants is growing quickly. As is the quality of the tasty food. Come to The Hague for the ultimate shopping experience. Visit the numerous impressive avenues and picturesque alleyways; from the chic Dennenweg with its many attractive fashion houses, antique shops and art dealers to the popular streets Lange Poten and Spui. Or relax in one of the many parks (both large and small) throughout the green city. Scheveningen, the sea-resort of The Hague can be reached by public transportation and is just ten minutes from the city centre. With its completely renovated pier, the former beach palace Kurhaus and of course its many high-quality seafood restaurants, Scheveningen is truly a great place to visit. Wherever you might go – the old centre, stately Benoordenhout, creative Zeeheldenbuurt or the chic Statenkwartier – we’re sure you’ll feel right at home in The Hague. You’re very welcome.

THE BEST DISTRICTS OF THE HAGUE

The Hague is a city with many faces. Both upper-class and local Hague accents can be heard here, as well as many other languages. The Hague boasts elite city districts juxtaposed against working-class neighbourhoods. The city is a shining example of a multicultural society. Must see districts are City Centre, Hofkwartier, Zeeheldenkwartier, Statenkwartier, Scheveningen and Kijkduin.

Palace Garden The Palace Garden (‘Paleistuin’) is one of The Hague’s hidden gems. This romantic park with flowerbeds, fountains, hedgerows and ponds lies directly behind Noordeinde Palace. Every day the inhabitants of The Hague gather in this quiet oasis. On warm days, adults seek shade amongst the trees, children play in the grass and amorous couples enjoy a picnic in the park. PRINSESSEWAL

INNER COURT

Step through the famous entry gate into the historical Binnenhof (Inner Court) in the heart of our democracy. This is the place where the most important events in the nation’s history took place. It is also where the future is created. The Inner Court in The Hague is studded with monumental old buildings testifying of eight centuries of governing in the Low Countries, but it also has several ample open spaces, all freely open to the public. The Binnenhof is a must-see if you’re in The Hague. Take a stroll through the courtyard and admire the fairytale-like splendour or take the time to take a tour through the various halls. You won’t be disappointed!

DISTRICTS

CITY CENTRE The Hague’s bustling downtown area has far more to offer than the landmarks Binnenhof, Noordeinde Palace, and Peace Palace. Boutiques, cafes, concert and dance venues, galleries, flagship stores, museums and restaurants offer something to everyone who loves culture, shopping and nightlife. It’s no wonder that The Hague was recently named Holland’s Best City 2013-2015!

BUURTSCHAP

ZEEHELDENKWARTIER

Buurtschap 2005 (named after the postcode) is a pleasant, lively district. This is where the famous Lange Voorhout is located. Nieuwe Schoolstraat is primarily known due to the PePijn Theatre set up by resident Paul van Vliet, where many cabaret performers have try-outs. Check out Kazernestraat with its many old coach houses and continue walking to Hoge Nieuwstraat.

To enjoy one of beautiful buildings and charming squares, a visit to one of The Hague’s most charming districts, Zeeheldenkwartier, is a must. The ‘Venetian’ part of The Hague, best described as a small maze, is located around Prins Hendrikplein. In addition to grand buildings, there are also beautiful 19th century almshouses in Zeeheldenkwartier.

8

HOFKWARTIER Immediately behind Noordeinde Palace, in the area stretching from the Palace Gardens and Torenstraat to Hoogstraat/ Noordeinde and the Great Church, you will find the Court District known as Hofkwartier. This is the perfect district for shopping ‘in style’. Beautiful streets with old bricks and gables capture the imagination and rekindle the charm of a bygone era.

THE HOFVIJVER

The Oranjezaal open to the public

The Hofvijver, ‘Court Pond’, is an artificial lake in The Hague, the Netherlands. The Hofvijver area is the place where The Hague first came to life. Once a small lake in the dunes with a castle belonging to a Dutch Count, now this area is the Netherlands’ centre of government. It’s also the perfect spot to take a picture of the Hague skyline with the Binnenhof, Mauritshuis and modern architecture on the background.

The Oranjezaal at Huis ten Bosch Palace will be opened to the public temporarily from Monday 7 September to Wednesday 30 December 2015 inclusive. Never before has access been granted to this famous dome-ceilinged room in the Royal residential palace in The Hague. Once they have registred interested parties will be able to view the Oranjezaal free of charge under the supervision of a guide. See the romantic courtyards and old buildings around Bankaplein and the Prinsevinkenpark. Stroll through the 19th century Willemspark, which still radiates an atmosphere of bygone days.

BELGISCH PARK

STATENKWARTIER

Belgisch Park is a quiet, rather chic district with beautiful houses in various styles, from neo-styles to Jugendstil, dating from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. There are magnificent buildings here, sometimes with beautiful Art Nouveau features.

The history of this magnificent 19th century district that boasts a wealth of unique architecture and beautiful streets, squares and lanes dates back to around 1895. Architect Berlage made his mark here on the Municipal Museum and monumental villas, such as Villa Henny.

KIJKDUIN BEACH On the edge of a wide stretch of dunes, you will find The Hague’s second most popular beach resort Kijkduin. PEACE PALACE

Huis ten Bosch Palace has been the residential palace of the Dutch Royal Family since 1981. The palace is located in the Haagse Bos forest. The palace is one of three official residences of the Royal Family, the other two being Noordeinde Palace in The Hague and the Royal Palace in Amsterdam. Huis ten Bosch Palace was until 2014 the home of Princess Beatrix. At some point in the future, King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and their three daughters will move to the palace. Rumour has it that the palace pond is where Willem Alexander proposed to Maxima on the ice in 2001. His great-grandmother, Queen Wilhelmina, also skated here as a young queen. ‘S-GRAVENHAAGSE BOS 10

VAN KLEEF

CELESTIAL VAULT

Feel the warmth of the peace flame on your back as you admire the most photographed building in The Hague: the Peace Palace. It is the seat of the International Court of Justice, the only judicial organ of the United Nations not located in New York, and the Permanent Court of Arbitration.

In the heart of the historical centre of The Hague you’ll find the only remaining genever and liqueur distillery Van Kleef. Founded in 1842, they are still in use today. Van Kleef sells a wide range of local liqueurs. Step inside and the craftsmanship, quality and history of this traditional local company are tangible.

A truly amazing experience: lying in the “Celestial Vault”, a big artificial crater in the dunes of Kijkduin. Immerse yourself in this work of art and gaze at the sky like you’ve never done before! In the dunes, where light can have such a tangible presence, artist James Turrell created a place to gaze at the sky.

ROYAL CITY BY THE SEA PHOTOGRAPHER ARJAN DE JAGER

T he Hague is one of the most extraordinary cities in Holland. Not just because it is the government city of the Netherlands, but also because of its many monuments, historic districts and its location near the beautiful North Sea coastline. The Hague is also known as the ‘Royal City by the Sea’ and is called ‘the residence city’ because of the many members of the Dutch Royal Family who reside in its chic neighbourhoods.

The Plein and Grote Markt squares abound with great restaurants, eateries, coffee houses and night clubs and are lively and welcoming places every day of the week. The Hague’s shopping is as varied as the city itself, ranging from luxury department stores and international top brands to cosy little streets filled with boutiques and specialty shops. It also has a lot of internationally renowned art and culture to offer. And last but not least, The Hague proves that a modern skyline and a historic city centre are perfect partners. Scheveningen, the best known seaside resort on the Dutch coast, is a great place to go for a suntan and water sports in summer and a bracing walk in winter. With attractions like Madurodam miniature city and the Omniversum dome movie theatre, The Hague is also a wonderful place for younger visitors. Truly, you have not seen Holland until you have been to The Hague! 15

ART & CULTURE

COLOUR UNLEASHED

UNTIL 3 JANUARY In the brief period between 1885 and the outbreak of war in 1914 painting in the Low countries experienced a modern Renaissance. Colour was liberated from the chains of visual reality. Suddenly, grass could be a cool blue, a face could be bright purple, and trees turned red. Colour had become an autonomous means of expression. This was one of the most important developments in modern art history. GEMEENTEMUSEUM DEN HAAG | STADHOUDERSLAAN 41 | GEMEENTEMUSEUM.NL

ART & CULTURE

Hero on a Plinth

Until 24 January 2016

Sometimes we hardly even notice them, but the statues in our streets and squares tell us who our heroes are, past and present. What makes someone a hero? The exhibition ‘Hero on a Plinth’ explores a number of heroes whose statues can be found throughout the city; from William of Orange to Nelson Mandela and from Louis Couperus to Aad Mansveld. Objects, paintings, film, photographs and stories are all used in the exhibition to show how these heroes have been depicted and revered throughout the ages. The exhibition also examines present-day heroism. Who deserves a statue today, and what form should it take? HAAGS HISTORISCH MUSEUM | KORTE VIJVERBERG 7 HAAGSHISTORISCHMUSEUM.NL

GATE MUSEUM The Gevangenpoort tells the thrilling tale of crime and punishment in days gone by. Since 1882, the mediaeval prison has operated as a museum. It lies on the Hofvijver, close to the Binnenhof in The Hague. The surrounding area is also rich in history. Join a city walk and take a look at the 18th-century Prince William V Gallery or visit the Historical Museum of The Hague, on the opposite side of the Hofvijver. BUITENHOF 33 GEVANGENPOORT.NL

Velázquez at the Gallery Until 29 November 2015

The Mauritshuis in The Hague presents an exceptional masterpiece of Velázquez at the Prince William V Gallery, the first public museum in the Netherlands. The painting, Portrait of Don Diego de Acedo, is a loan from the Prado in Madrid. Velázquez’ work is usually not on display in The Netherlands, so it’s a unique chance to see this painting by the renowned Spanish painter. Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (1599-1660) was the most famous Spanish painter of the seventeenth century. Not only was he a contemporary of Rembrandt, but he also had a comparably virtuoso painting style. GALLERY PRINCE WILLIAM V BUITENHOF 33 - MAURITSHUIS.NL

DUTCH SELF-PORTRAITS SELFIES OF THE GOLDEN AGE The self-portrait is perhaps the best expression of the phenomenal explosion of the art of painting that took place in the Dutch Golden Age. Many seventeenth-century Dutch painters portrayed themselves, more than anywhere else in the world. Dutch painters developed various types of self-portraits: as gentlemen, with family members, role-playing and with artist’s accessories. These paintings have much to tell us about the artist’s self-image and presentation. In them, the painter often makes a statement about his (or her) profession, status or positioning in the world. ART & CULTURE

ESCHER IN THE PALACE Museum Escher in Het Paleis is dedicated to the world-famous artist M.C. Escher, whose art startled millions of people all over the world. The collection is housed in the former Winter Palace of Queen Mother Emma of the Netherlands. Maurits Cornelis Escher, who lived from 1898 to 1972, was a genius at drawing impossible situations. If you take a closer look at his work you realise that Escher’s illustrations are mathematical masterpieces of optical illusion. In one of his most famous works, Waterfall, water flows uphill and the towers are put together incongruously. Other works show birds morphing into fish and figures that endlessly walk up and down a staircase in the same courtyard. MUSEUM ESCHER IN HET PALEIS LANGE VOORHOUT 74 ESCHERINHETPALEIS.NL

MONDRIAN & DE STIJL

CHANSONS GRISES

Mondrian & De Stijl finally have a permanent home base in the Netherlands. Besides Rembrandt and Van Gogh, the work of De Stijl is the only art form to be included in the Canon of Dutch History. Yet up to now there was no one place in the Netherlands where you could go to get an overview of this most important Dutch contribution to modern art. Without De Stijl, the homes and streets and the very cityscapes of the western world would have looked very different. Moreover, the group that grew up around Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg continues to inspire artists, designers and architects even to this day.

Creations by Peter George d’Angelino Tap This year, cultural institutions are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the death of Hendrik Willem Mesdag and the 125th anniversary of the death of Vincent van Gogh. Both painters inspired designer d’Angelino Tap to create spectacular creations using different art forms: Chansons Grises. Panorama Mesdag will be showing the exhibition ‘Chansons Grises, Creations by Peter George d’Angelino Tap’, with over 20 spectacular fashion creations by the designer Peter George d’Angelino Tap.

2015 MESDAG YEAR This year, The Hague will be celebrating Mesdag’s 100-year-old cultural legacy. In the late 19th century, Mesdag put the city on the cultural map, both nationally and internationally. In addition to being a painter, Mesdag was an entrepreneur, collector, Mecenas, and an important source of inspiration for many painters from The Hague School. Since that time, Mesdag and The Hague have been inextricably interwoven.

The Vegetarian Butcher

The Vegetarian Butcher distinguishes itself with a whole new generation of meat- and fish substitutes which chefs and culinary journalists find similar to the real thing. Ferran Adrià (El Bulli) and his team of chefs were convinced they were eating chicken thigh of excellent quality and Mark Bittman, food critic of The New York Times, praised their plant-based meat. The Independent headlined: “Is this the end of meat?” At The Vegetarian Butcher you can get the most delicious take-away meals, sandwiches and power food. From fake chicken to fake gyros and fake sausages – all this and much more is available. SPUI 167A VEGETARIANBUTCHER.COM

THE HAGUE PHOTOGRAPHER ARJAN DE JAGER

S tep through the famous entry gate into the historical Binnenhof (Inner

Court) in the heart of our democracy. The Binnenhof is situated in the heart of The Hague’s city centre. It has been the location of meetings of the Dutch parliament, the Staten-Generaal, since 1446, and has been the centre of Dutch politics for many centuries. One of the towers, simply known as het Torentje (‘the Little Tower’; directly next to the Mauritshuis) has been the office of the Prime Minister of Holland since 1982. A large modern building at the south side of the Binnenhof since 1992 houses the House of Representatives, the lower but more important of the Dutch democratically elected Houses of parliament. Court Pond Standing at the Hofvijver, ‘Court Pond’, the artificial lake beside the Binnenhof, one has a splendid view at numerous buildings from different centuries. The Hofvijver was first dug out by the counts of Holland in the late 13C. Originally a natural body of water among the sand dunes, the Court Pond was extended over the years. The excavated sand was piled up on the north side of the lake to form the elevated area known as the Lange Vijverberg, now occupied by a graciously curving line of mostly 18C mansions. The 17C buildings along the short side of the lake, the Korte Vijverberg, include the King’s Cabinet and the city’s historical museum. 28

The Plein

The Plein quite simply translates to ‘the square’ in English but it’s so much more than just a simple square. Het Plein is one of the more picturesque and tasteful spots for dining and drinking in The Hague. By day, het Plein has the feeling of an old town square in the middle of an active metropolis. It’s impossible to miss the contrast between the historical, quaint buildings located on het Plein and the modern skyscrapers towering behind. After five o’clock the corporate suits and yuppies turn up on this historic square for a drink. At night, however, the same venues transform in cafes and clubs. The Plein is one of the main nightlife hotspots in The Hague. Whether you are coming for a quick bite and a drink in a café-restaurant or to dance into the early hours of the morning in one of the trendy clubs - the Plein is the place to be!
