2017

“I saw Heidelberg one beautifully clear morning, one which was both fresh and refreshing at once. There is something quite ideal about the city and her location.“ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1797

Welcome to Heidelberg “Heidelberg is itself a resplendent romantic, where spring entwines the houses and courtyards and everything ordinary with vines and flowers, and castles and forests tell a wonderful story of times gone by, as though there were nothing evil in the world”, wrote poet Joseph von Eichendorff in his memoirs at the start of the 19th century. Heidelberg has succeeded in preserving this irresistible magic right up to the present day. The Neckar, which winds picturesquely through the green valley, and the romantic Castle ruins, which tower over the roofs of the scenic Old Town, attract several million visitors to the town every year. Heidelberg is linked as inextricably to the Castle – residence of the Electors of the Palatinate for almost five centuries – as it is to the over 600-year old university. The history of the town is all around you. The Heidelberg Philosopher’s Walk is very well-known. At one time, scholars strolled here in stiff frock coats to clear their minds with a walk. On the sunny side of the Heiligenberg, many scholars often gained new insights, and there were always unique views of the town, the river, the Old Bridge, the Castle and the almost 600-meter high “Königstuhl” (King’s Seat hill). We look forward to welcoming you! Your team at Heidelberg Marketing

10 Through the dark alleys of Heidelberg with the night watchman Since the Middle Ages, the night watchman has ensured the safety of the citizens within the town walls. When the Romantics began to celebrate Heidelberg in songs and immortalize the enormous Castle ruins in copper engravings at the start of the 19th century, guests came to the Neckar from all over the world. The night watchman also protected them from robbers, fraudulent antique dealers and purveyors of other immoral offers. Wander through the alleys of the Old Town by the side of the night watchman while he entertains you with stories from days long forgotten.

Special Activities Themed Tours

Themed Tours 12 Baroque Heidelberg This is a journey of discovery into an exciting era rich in contrast, which shows the other side of the “beautiful illusion” that was the Baroque era, a time of magnificent festivals, where courtiers wore powdered wigs and led a luxurious life at court. Discover the daily life of the urban population in times of devastating wars, the traumatizing capture and destruction of Heidelberg, the expulsion and the misery – but also a fresh start with the immigrants who helped to reconstruct, the city in the new style, and pave the way for business, science and the arts. Learn about the wall dispute, how the elector punished the city, and the “lucky pig” that was given an entire country. 13 Heidelberg in the era of romanticism “In einem kühlen Grunde, da geht ein Mühlenrad ...” (Down there in verdant meadows, a mill wheel turs around) The famous Heidelberg romantics – the young poets Joseph von Eichendorff, Clemens Brentano, Achim von Arnim and their friends, turned Heidelberg into the center of late romanticism at the start of the 19th Century. There is evidence of them all over the town. Embark on a search for clues in this tour – it leads through the picturesque corners of the Old Town up into the Castle garden to the Scheffelterrasse.

The old auditorium and the Studentenkarzer, the historic student prison, are two of the stops along the way. . 17 Luther Tour Heidelberg was a milestone en route to the Reformation – Luther’s not entirely uneventful journey to Heidelberg in 1518 was his first theological appearance outside Wittenberg after nailing his 95 theses to the door on October 31, 1517. On the invitation of the Augustine Order and Elector Ludwig V., he led the Heidelberg Disputation in April 1518 in the local Augustine Monastery and, in doing so, defended the fundamental concept of his new theology – the full dependency of people on the grace of God. This interesting stroll will trace Luther’s footsteps through the town.

Abbey Stift Neuburg Nestled in the Neckar valley, surrounded by lush green with a divine view of the winding river and the slopes of the Odenwald mountain range, the abbey is an attraction for both locals and tourists. The Benedictine Abbey was founded in 1130 by the Lorsch monastery and constantly battled economic difficulties until the monastery was dissolved in 1562. For a long time after that, the building has served a variety of purposes, the most permanent being a “Jungfern-Stift” (convent), where noble women lived together as a “society of virtuous gentlewomen” (thus the current name Stift Neuburg – convent). Since 1927 it has once again been inhabited by monks of the order of St. Benedict. A farm shop with organic products from the region and a small organic brewery adjoin the monastery. True to the Benedictine order, the monks dedicate themselves to pastoral care with a variety of cultural programs such as concerts or discussions on contemporary issues. More information: www.stift-neuburg.de. Getting to the monastery: –– by foot along the Neckar or via the Philosopher’s Walk (Philosophenweg) –– on the 34 bus line, direction Ziegelhausen, Stift Neuburg stop, www.vrn.de –– with the boats of the Weisse Flotte, Kloster-Neuburg landing pier, www.weisse-flotte-heidelberg.de Brewery tour hours: Mon – Fri 10 am – 6 pm, Sat 10 am – 4 pm (outside tour hours on request). Conclusion of a travel contract; Status of the group client and group leader The group client is the institution, legally recognized or unrecognized association with or without legal personality, the, company or other legal entity under public or private law, that commissions HDM to provide group travel services. The group leader is the person acting on behalf of the group client, in particular the person who is appointed to be responsible for the group during a trip. For trips involving closed groups as used defined by these Terms and Conditions of Travel, the trip participants are deemed to be travelers within the meaning of applicable statutory provisions and hold the status of a beneficiary of a contract in favor of a third party. Group travel may only be booked in writing. In the case of “Group Travel” (with overnight stay), upon request by the group client and coordination of the details, HDM shall issue a binding offer to conclude a travel contract to the group client as an independent party to the contract and party obligated to pay following a request by the group client and coordination of the details. The contract shall be concluded only upon receipt of the group client’s written acceptance of the offer by HDM within the deadline for acceptance specified by HDM. Any written acceptance that includes amendments, restrictions or expansions in addenda with respect to the offer submitted by HDM shall not result in the conclusion of a contract. Customers are recommended to request a new offer should they wish to make changes. The following applies to reservations for “Adventure Travel” (guided tours, excursions, boat trips, etc.): a) Upon submitting the booking, the group client makes a binding offer to HDM to conclude a travel contract as an independent party to the contract and party obligated to pay. The group client is bound by its offer to contract for ten (10) days. b) The contract is shall only be concluded upon receipt of the HDM’s written booking confirmation/invoice by the group client. c) Should the content of the booking confirmation deviate from the content of the group client’s reservation from the group client or if HDM first submits a binding offer to the group client without a preceding booking, the travel contract shall be concluded on the basis of the modified booking confirmation and/or the offer from HDM, if and insofar as applicable, to the extent the group client indicates its acceptance in writing within the period stipulated by HDM or otherwise within ten (10) days. In the event these Terms and Conditions of Travel contain provisions applicable to “Group Travel” (with overnight stay) that vary from those applicable to “Adventure Travel” (guided tours, excursions, boat trips, etc.), the terms and conditions applicable to “Group Travel” (with overnight stay) shall apply exclusively in the case of a combination of these two forms of bookings. HDM notes that based on, pursuant to the statutory provisions of Section 312 et seq. BGB, there is no right of withdrawal for either Group Travel or Adventure Travel, i.e. neither for the group client nor the participants. In such cases, only the statutory rights

of withdrawal and termination shall apply.
