HAPPY NEW YEAR 2012! January Update & Sun Sign Forecast 2012 by Jill Jardine, M.A.

Chinese New Year: 1.23.2012

Welcome to 2012, the cathartic shift of ages! The Mayan calendar ended on October 28, 2011, and we are the still picking up the pieces as we navigate our way through the time out of time. We are all experiencing profound changes that affect every aspect of being. Neptune transiting into Pisces in February 2012 will help us go with the flow and release attachment. Nothing is as it seems, our inner barometer is the only true gage or true north. Poles are shifting, weather is weird, and conditions feel chaotic. Mars in Virgo for the first 6 months of 2012 reminds us to be very discerning where we put our attention. Energy flows where attention goes. Let's put our focus on the good in our life and our positive plans for the future. Don't dwell on disruptions, disturbances, and disappointments. 2012 will provide plenty of ups and downs in our life but we need to surf the Neptunian waves and let our inner landscape guide the way. The external or collective reality may feel grim, limiting, or crazy. Yes, these are the birthing pains of the New Earth. 2012 says Out with the Old, in with the New. Uranus in Aries, thrashes the outworn paradigms, economically, environmentally, politically and collectively. The January Full Moon arrives on January 9th with the Sun in Capricorn and Moon in Cancer. This full moon in Cancer may disturb the emotional climate , making people more moody, reactive and sensitive. This full moon cycle will promote emotional healing, and releasing outworn emotional behaviors. This is a time of cleaning closets, both emotionally and physically, getting back to the essentials. In feng shui, we are advised to get rid of anything we haven't used in the past year, to clear the clutter and make way for new. This practice encourages the release of emotional and physical baggage, making us lighter as we embark into a new year. The Sabian symbols for this full moon (an Astrological archetypal expression of the 360 degrees of the zodiac) 3 Healthy Living Magazine Online Issue January 2012

demand that we enhance our intuitive, nurturing, and healing nature. For the Moon at 19 degrees Cancer the Sabian symbol is "A priest performing a marriage ceremony, the ritualization of productive interpersonal relationships." For the Sun at 19 degrees Capricorn, "A 5 year old child carrying a bag filled with groceries; rising to the occasion when asked to assume social responsibilities ahead of one's normal development." We are being asked to step up our soul's intent for this incarnation even if don't think we are ready to assume the new responsibilities that will benefit the collective or bring more personal "wholeness." The Sun enters Aquarius on January 20th and the Aquarian New Moon arrives on January 23, ushering in the Chinese New Year - Year of the Dragon! Dragon and serpent energy are the same, and are connected to kundalini energies, life force, vitality, and sexual energies. This is a year of applying the life force in healing ways. This week should prove to be the most exciting week of the month, enhancing the auspiciousness of Jill's birthday on January 23rd! This is a time of significant endings and beginnings, marked by the Lunar-based Chinese calendar which begins a new year now. Those people born in 1928, 1940 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988 and 2000 are born during the Chinese Year of the Dragon. They will be celebrating their totem Chinese birth year which is also their Jupiter-return year, a very lucky cycle during 2012! Aquarius New moon shows us where we can become more liberated in our life and now our personal path can merge with the greater good to enhance not only our life experience, but also the lives of all those being with who we make connection. Ayurveda for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Jennifer was puzzled. A friend had recommended Ayurveda for Jennifer’s son who had been diagnosed with, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). She thought ADD, ADHD are such new diseases, how can Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old science, have a solution for it? What Jennifer did not know was that Ayurveda is an energy science. Energy controls all actions and functions in the body. Disease is a manifestation of an imbalance in the underlying or primary energies known as Doshas in Ayurveda. Instead of treating the disease, Ayurveda treats the cause of the symptoms, removing the factors causing the disturbance and reestablishing the balance of Doshas or energies. ADD, ADHD, ADSD, SAD, PMS, PMDD, PAD or any other group of behavior symptoms such as these, can be effectively treated by Ayurveda with its understanding of primary energy forces in the body and its extensive knowledge of the factors that can influence these energies to rebalance themselves. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is primarily seen in young children. They have difficulty sitting calmly or following instructions. They are fidgety, unable to listen, sit still or focus on progressive tasks and interrupt others. This type of hyperactive behavior, though appreciated in bumblebees does not bode well for school age children. I observed Adam, Jennifer’s son at my office. He was a cute little boy, slender in body with a very expressive face. He ran around constantly, not paying attention to his mother. I took the opportunity to just hold him, gently rubbed my hands around his curly hair for few minutes and noticed how he calmed down, started smiling at me and then took off running again. I could see his major energy dosha was Vata.

7 Healthy Living Magazine Online Issue January 2012

Among the three energies; Vata, Pitta and Kapha dosha, Vata is the energy of action. It controls all the movements and nervous impulses in the body. Naturally when Vata is aggravated or increases, it results in more activity. Chronic aggravation of Vata energies in a Vata child will create the, ADHD syndrome. When I asked Jennifer, about his appetite and elimination, she mentioned that “it goes up and down and he gets constipated often. The days he gets good bowel movements he is at his best behavior”. Jennifer hadn’t made that connection before.

What is the cause of Vata aggravation? Clearly toxins and waste material built up in a Vata body will cause an increase in motion, activity. But the remedy for this is found in simple nutrition and lifestyle alterations. Our environment has become so active and fast paced. Everybody is busy doing something 24 hours a day. And children are not immune to speed and the frenetic pace of the world around them. They are surrounded by constant action, motion, noise, talking or walking toys, flashing colors, continuous stimulation on TV shows and video games. There is no space for peace and calmness. I went to visit my grand daughter and accidentally I touched one of her toys. For the next five minutes I was listened to nursery rhymes, numbers, colors or some sort of sounds. All this stimulation and action impacts a child’s psyche. They start by becoming more playful, then very active to hyperactive and then fidgety when they are requested to calm down.

In Ayurveda, the rule of thumb is: Like increases Like. Excess movement aggravates Vata and because of high Vata already in a child there is hyperactivity. Children of a Vata body constitution are prone to these kinds of behavioral syndromes. Parents should think about balancing environment stimulation by including physical activities that burn energy and other quiet, calming activities involving touch and soft, gentle music into their child’s day. What is the treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder? balance the Vata dosha. Here are some simple but effective ways using diet and lifestyle changes to help your child become more centered, self directed and peaceful.

Diet Replace sugar filled, processed foods with whole grains: bread, quinoa, rice, amaranth, whole wheat pasta etc. Root, squashes, pumpkins, zucchini, and okra, are more grounding vegetables than raw leafy vegetables. Replace cold fruit juices with fresh fruits. Serve your family unsalted nuts rather than candies. Warm foods will make them feel grounded more than cold refrigerated foods. A piece of pie will be a better choice than a scoop of cold ice cream. Eat meals at the dining table rather than in front of the TV. Stimulation while eating can disturb digestion and assimilation.

Lifestyle Massage kids from head to toes with warm sesame oil 2-3 times a week. Leave the oil on for 20-30 minutes and follow with a warm bath. This is also great bonding time. 9 Healthy Living Magazine Online Issue January 2012

Put 5 drops of sesame oil in both ears daily if you are able Massage inside the nostrils with brahmi oil. Do some fun activities sitting down - drawing, painting, and coloring during some part of the day. Do alternate nostril Pranayama (Nadi Shodhanam) in their presence. Kids always like to mimic adults. Do some yoga poses and don’t forget to end with Shavasana (laying down face up). You will be surprised to see your children lying down peacefully. Herbs such as Brahmi, Shankhapushpi and Jatamansi are nerve tonics and help to calm the mind down. Herbs like triphala or Haritaki help improve elimination and feel calm. Go to our other websites for these and other healing herbs. Paint the bedroom with calming colors like blue or green. Let them listen to tranquil music at bed time. Keep the temperature in the bedroom warm. Always protect their head and ears from cold air. Limit TV time and Video games. (You may have to limit your TV watching time too.) Children don’t do what you tell them to do, they do what you do. Let them play outdoors rather than sitting in front of a TV. Ayurveda has very a unique approach to health and healing. Strengthen Your

Immune System.

Believe it or not, massages can help boost your immune system. How so? The reason lies in one key advantage of regular massages: stress relief. We all experience stress in our daily lives. No matter what kind of job you have, what lifestyle you live, there will always be a certain amount of stress in your life. Stress can become manifested in bodily malfunctions. If not dealt with properly, or if it is not released, stress can cause you to become physically ill one way or another. This is where the benefits of massages come into the picture. Massages are a great way to release stress, and when received on a regular basis, help manage stress levels efficiently. Without high stress levels, your immune system will be much better, and you can ward off common diseases much more easily. Local moms respond to increasing concerns

over toxic chemicals found in consumer products, ask Congress for leadership.

by Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow

Moms across the country organized local stroller brigades to demand increased protections from toxic chemicals. A local event in Boston featured moms and children asking Senators Brown and Kerry to be leaders in increasing protections for American families. Children were dressed in red capes asking the senators to “be their heroes” by taking leadership on the issue. Defined as a “mom-led movement”, the quest for safer chemicals has gained traction among women of all demographics and political parties. Most recently the issue has gained celebrity spokespeople like actress and mother, Jessica Alba. “As a mother of two, I feel the urgency of this problem on a personal level and want to see the country move forward with common sense controls on toxic chemicals,” said Erin Boles, Director of the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition, and cancer survivor. “Senators Brown and Kerry have an opportunity to be real leaders – our children are here today to be advocates for a healthier future.” The moms are rallying behind a bill that would take meaningful steps to protect the American public from toxic chemicals. The Safe Chemicals Act of 2011 (S.847), introduced by Sen. Frank Lautenberg (NJ) would increase chemical safety, inform consumers and the marketplace on chemical hazardous and protect vulnerable populations like pregnant women and children. "New studies continue to emerge suggesting that toxic chemical exposures contribute to birth defects, learning disabilities, and other disorders, some from products most of us use every day in our homes and workplaces," said Michelle Gottlieb, Marblehead mother of 3, and member of the Marblehead Board of Health. "As a mom, I want the healthiest future for

my children, and for all children. We can make real progress in preventing chronic diseases if Congress updates our laws – our children deserve it." “Only in the last six decades have we been inundating our bodies with thousands of chemicals whose safety is unknown, and not ever encountered before the twentieth century,” said Kristi Marsh, a breast cancer survivor and mother of 3 from North Easton. “I am a mom. A protector. I will do what I can. But I cannot do this alone. Herb of the Month:

Ginger Root Pinyin: Sheng jiang (fresh) or Gan jiang (dried)

Ginger root (fresh form pictured here) warms, detoxifies, and helps digestion Ginger, in its many different forms (fresh root, dried root, ginger juice, ginger oil) has been used for centuries in China for both culinary and medicinal purposes. We will discuss the two most commonly used forms in our clinic - fresh ginger root and dried ginger root. Fresh ginger root (sheng jiang) is said to be warm and acrid (spicy) and enters the Lung, Spleen and Stomach meridians. Fresh ginger root is very commonly used to treat the early stages of the common cold and may even prevent catching a cold during cold or rainy weather. For this purpose, several slices of fresh ginger are boiled in water for about 10 minutes. The tea is typically taken in the evening just before going to bed so that the patient can "sweat the cold out". Additionally, fresh ginger warms the Lung to help stop coughing and warms the Stomach to relieve nausea and vomiting. It eliminates toxins from the body and is useful in minimizing harsh effects of other medicinal substances in herbal formulas. Fresh ginger is often added when cooking stews and beans and is especially helpful for reducing gas associated with eating beans. Dried ginger root (gan jiang) has similar functions to fresh ginger but is much warmer and is said to be a major restorer of the body's Yang energy. It enters the Heart, Lung, Spleen and Stomach meridians. Whereas fresh ginger root treats exterior cold symptoms (like the common cold and the flu), dried ginger root treats interior cold symptoms like feeling cold, cold hands and feet, watery diarrhea, and some forms of abdominal and menstrual pain. KALE The Super Food

by Carly Johann, and Sheena Benton

Sauteed Kale Saute kale in olive oil with chopped fresh garlic and salt and pepper to taste. Serve with small pieces of whole grain artisan bread for a simple, healthy appetizer or side dish. Kale is a bonafide superfood. One cup of kale has only 36 calories and zero grams of fat, which makes it a great diet aid. Furthermore, one cup contains nearly 20% of the RDA of dietary fiber, which promotes regular digestion, prevents constipation, lowers blood sugar and curbs overeating. Kale is also superstar in the arena of carotenoids and flavonoids, two powerful

antioxidants that protect our cells from free radicals that cause oxidative stress. Key for athletes, one cup of kale also provides about 10% of the RDA of omega-3 fatty acids that helps regulate the body’s inflammatory process. A megadose of vitamin K further aids to fight against excessive inflammatory-related problems, such as arthritis, autoimmune disorders, and asthma. Try to add a handful of raisins for sweet surprises and it’s a good source of iron or add a sprinkle of crushed hazelnuts for some good fats.

When "Sleeping with the Enemy" Is a Good Thing by Denise Linn

When I wanted to start raising chickens, friends were concerned that our dog, Sadie, might try to chase (and potentially hurt) them. Knowing they were right, I decided to try a radical strategy to encourage Sadie to change her natural inclinations. It was one of those wild intuitive flashes that really paid off. In a small room, I made myself a bed on the floor and put the cage (with the chickens in it) next to me and then got Sadie to lay down with us. It was a challenge at first, but eventually we all snuggled and slept together through the night. After a few nights of doing this, Sadie lost that intense look that seemed to say, "I wonder how chickens taste?" and began to wag her tail and try to play with them. I now leave the chickens out to roam freely and Sadie is a fabulous guardian, protecting them from harm. For example, if a hawk gets too interested in the hens, Sadie barks at it in a frenzy until it takes off. Since this strategy had worked so well with the chickens, I decided to do the same when I brought a small kitten home. Sadie used to chase cats and as a result we were unsure about having a cat here at Summerhill Ranch.

But once again, I slept on the floor with Sadie and the kitten, until Sadie eventually realized that Muse was a part of the family . . . and now they're best of friends and sleep curled up together so closely that you can't tell where one starts and the other one ends. When I think about how well this worked with our critters here at Summerhill Ranch, it occurred to me that this is a strategy for life. If we metaphorically "slept with the enemy" and spent time getting to know the people with whom we have disharmony, we could potentially have a deeper sense of compassion and understanding for others. As a suggestion, the next time you have a challenge with someone, imagine that you are spending some time with them and really getting to see the world at their level. It might make all the difference. Denise Linn has taught seminars in 20 countries and has written 15 books, including the best-selling Sacred Space and the award-winning Sacred Legacies. Her books have been translated into 26 languages. She has distilled the information and wisdom she has gained from indigenous cultures around the planet, as well as from her own Native American roots, into her teaching. may be more distractions and stimulation than usual this year, so you need to work extra hard to stay focused and on task. Gemini is the multi-taskmaster of the zodiac and this year you may be able to focus on many goals simultaneously. Stay away from gossip. Watch out for others imposing their issues on you, as this could derail your forward movement and bog you down in drama. You are experiencing revelations and re-aligning your love life to fit to your new found sense of Self. Early Geminis born between May 21-May 25 experience a square from Neptune in Pisces that requires they go with the flow and not take themselves too seriously. Cancer (born June 21 - July 21): Cancer gets to experience three major astrological aspects in 2012. Surely your patience, endurance, and ability to go with the flow will be tested. Pluto in Capricorn, Uranus in Aries for early Cancers born in June, will present some challenges, and force changes. Pluto in Capricorn this year will bring challenges and obstacles to your emotional well-being. Cancer likes to hold on to the familiar, that which feels safe and secure. Pluto helps you release the outworn, old ways that no longer serve you. Opportunities to bring in new systems and true inner security is possible now. The good news is that major transformations are underway and you can emerge, lighter and brighter, and unhindered by your past. Cancerians born from July 14-21 will feel the crunch from Saturn in Libra forcing new boundaries in all relationships. Saturn squaring your sun is forcing you to re-evaluate all your relationships, and establish new support

systems. Take care of yourself first, and right relationship will follow. You must look at the balance of giving and receiving in your life. Cancer tends to be a sign that gives so much and then feels resentful when their needs are not met. Cancer needs to open to receive and not drain their resources this year. Focus on healing the physical and emotional bodies is also recommended. Leo (born July 21-August 21): Leo prepares to make much headway in career and professional life this year. The focus is on planning your future, and seeing it magically unfold in 2012, thanks to Jupiter transiting your career arena and house of your future. This is a year of instant manifestation regarding career success. Leo, if you are thinking about making big career or professional changes, this is the year to just "DO IT". If you were thinking about retiring wait until 2013 or later. Uranus in Aries trines your sun this year which will bring fun surprises and new opportunities in all aspects of your life. Fire feeds fire and the heart is the organ of fire, and Leo ruled organ.. Leo knows how to live from the heart. Your love life will benefit from this infusion of fire. Your creative potential can reach new heights. However, with all this excitement, you need to be vigilant in maintaining your physical well-being as Pluto transits your house of health. This will require vigilance in healing, addressing any health issues which arise, and looking for the emotional root of any health concerns. Neptune transits your money house, specifically monies from partner, others and unearned means, which means you may have to become more

self-reliant around finances. Sources you have relied upon for financial help may dissolve this year. Jupiter is helping you become more financially independent by using your skills, talents and creativity. Virgo (born August 21 - September 21): Virgo receives a nice boost from Pluto in Capricorn in 2012 transforming your life in positive ways. Jupiter transits Taurus, improving your finances, and Mars transits through Virgo, helping your life force and vitality to increase. These harmonious aspects will help institute and implement new health, diet, or wellness regimes. Virgo can accomplish and achieve many goals now, but don't make it a year of all work and no play. You may feel restless, irritable or angry this year due to Mars kicking your butt until July 2012. Kick-boxing, strong cardio exercise, "Zumba", or other aggressive work out systems can help release some of this pent up energy. Very important for Virgo to have some fun this year, and take that long awaited vacation. Jupiter transits your house of travel and higher education, and these areas can provide happiness and inspiration. Big changes can now be implemented with ease. Neptune in Pisces opposing your sun can make you feel like a martyr. Relationships that feel draining and unrewarding may dissipate your energy, so you will have to make some big decisions with releasing certain people from your life. If something in your life no longer serves, let it go with ease and grace. You are being tested to release without regret. Saturn transits your money house which means if you focus on improving your finances and being creative in ways of making money, you will reap the rewards. Uranus transits your house of sex, death and resources from others and unearned means, can bring some unexpected twists and surprises in these areas.

tests and challenges. Saturn rules the material plane, including physical body and finances, so pay extra attention to balancing these aspects of your life. However, Saturn can be your friend when you identify what is the lesson that is being taught, and make changes accordingly. Libra is realizing what is really valuable in their lives and finding the peace from within to perpetuate into their outer world. Only from the inner sense of strength and security, can you re-shape your life to take you into your future. Neptune transits your house of health, so be vigilant in taking care of your health and well-being. Mars transits your house of "spirit" which will bring spiritual experiences, insights, or revelations that give tangible result. Jupiter transits your house of money from unearned means, unexpected incomes, and other people's money, providing a pleasant financial influx from new sources. Libra is the sign of relationship, so this year will bring all sorts of tests in interactions with others. New people who you make contact with this year may act erratically or irrationally, make sure you are clear in your communications with others. Scorpio (born October 21-November 21): Pluto transiting Capricorn and Mars in Virgo bring a new harmony to the Scorpionic symphony in 2012. New beginnings are now possible which will have staying power. Pluto, the ruler of your sign, is your ally in 2012, and you are teaching others how to ride the waves of turbulence

Libra (born September 21 - October 21): Libras have the opportunity to kick karmic baggage out of their life and implement new plans that will support you in the coming years, thanks to Saturn transiting your sign throughout 2012. Those Libras born from October 11-21 receive Saturnian initiations will continue to give you 21 Healthy Living Magazine Online Issue January 2012

and transformation in their lives. Scorpio can function well in crisis and chaos, but sometimes unnecessarily bring it into their lives or those around them. Mars in Virgo will force discernment for Scorpio to tone down their drama quotient this year. Since this is a collective time of crisis and chaos, Scorpio is going along with business as usual. It's the proverbial end of the world as we know it, but Scorpio feels fine. Remember Scorpio is the

phoenix rising out of the ashes, so this is your time to re-build and re-create your life. You continue to purge your shadow self. Neptune in Pisces, brings your addictive or self-destructive tendencies to the surface so you can choose to "evolve or dissolve" 2012. The opportunity to love yourself more in 2012 is possible, thanks to Neptune in Pisces in harmonious aspect to your sun. life. Relationships can benefit as a result. Mars transiting Virgo and your house of the future gives you the energetic push to implement new plans that will reward you in coming times. Saturn transits your house of spiritual awakenings and soul remembrance reminding you of your true power and that "you are not alone." Sagittarius (born November 21December 21): 2012 can bring big shifts and instant manifestations thanks to Uranus in Aries providing new opportunities, and adding fuel to the Sagittarian fires. Uranus will create sudden changes in all aspects of your life and new relationships and connections will surface. Pluto in Capricorn is transforming your value systems, your sense of self worth, and your finances. You are looking for depth and support in these aspects of life. Saturn transits your house of the future, forcing you to get serious about how you will be supported. Mars in your professional house and Jupiter in your house of work allows you to work long and hard to achieve your goals, but you will see tangible results in no time. Jupiter will provide some professional opportunities to expand your influence this year. Uranus transits your house of creativity, romance and recreation, providing inspiration and excitement in these arenas. However, when Neptune transits into Pisces this year, health challenges may surface. Neptune's watery reign tries to dampen Sag's sunny disposition. Make sure your water energy (emotions) are not ignored so that the fire (spiritual) energies are not compromised. This is a year of keeping everything in balance and paying attention to your inner- most urges and instincts. Capricorn (born December 21 January 21): Capricorn continues to surf the tsunami called Pluto during 2012. You ego is being washed away, and Neptune in Pisces helps with this process. Like Scorpio, you are being asked to "Evolve or Dissolve" this year. Surrender and humility are the keys to survival right now for Capricorn. You will teach others about soul-infused personality. Don't expect outer situations and conditions to fulfill you; you will disappointed and dismayed. Those

Capricornians born in December are rebirthing a new self on the new earth, and the birthing pangs may be intense. Affirming that you are spirit in matter - "I am a spiritual being having a physical experience" can help you navigate this cycle. The foundations you create now personally and professionally will have staying power into the future. Neptune through Pisces will re-awaken your dreams for a better life, and feed any creative urges. Mars in Virgo and Pluto in your sign transforms and heals your physical body, any health issues that arise now need attention so that deep healing can transpire. Aquarius (born January 21February 20): Aquarius weathered difficult times during 2009 - 2011 thanks to Neptune in Aquarius dissolving your ego unrelentlessly and Chiron emphasizing your wounded healer self. You were forced to walk your talk, without mercy in 2011. Neptune finally leaves your sign, giving the emotional body a much deserved break. You can now rebuild, refinance, and re-invent all areas of your life that suffered from Neptune's errosive edge. Big changes of a positive nature are in store for all Aquarians this year. Your reality finally catches up with your Aquarian vison for your personal future. The Mayan calendar accelerations are welcomed by Aquarius. Uranus in Aries positively aspects your sun, providing fresh outlooks, fun adventures, and creative enterprises during 2012 and for the next six years. Mars infuses your 8th house of money from unearned means, other people's monies, sex, death and rebirth. All these arenas will support you during 2012. You will be active in pursuing your piece of the pie of prosperity. Jupiter lends benevolent influence in expanding your home base, benefits from your family , and experiencing new levels of comfort and security both internally and externally. Your challenge is to share your Aquarian inspiration with the collective consciousness so planetary evolution is enhanced during 2012.

I run downstairs, thrusting myself into the cloud of cumin, curry, and cardamom. The rice found its place in the confine of the rice cooker. Yams were cozy in the oven. I had some time before the next steps so I became inspired enough to make a gluten-free chocolate cake. I had a Bob’s Red Mill mix in the cupboard and one last egg in the refrigerator from Al, the neighborhood farmer. Luckily, I had enough coconut milk left from yesterd . . . perfect. The culinary creativity was moving through me . . . I was floating in a spiced incense bliss . . . happy to create and serve a meal to a friend on the fly! Although I didn’t get time to engage in my typical artistic afternoon of painting on the weekend, I manifested my creativity in spicy chana dal with delicate basmati rice with a heaping dash of yam sweetness. It’s interesting how easy it is to form “pegged” definitions of what creativity is. Creativity is any act of personal expression. So much of who we are can come through even the preparation of a meal. When we have to work with what we have, we span the reaches of what we are capable of. Creativity in the present moment – how fulfilling it can be – all within the art studio of the kitchen!

The 7 Masks of Zorrow!

It’s often forgotten that one of the dragons that must be slain on the road to happiness is the cause of sorrow. It seems likely that few of us will clearly see what brings our spirit down, simply because it’s too close to home. It is so close, so subtle and very often so subconscious. It’s those moments when we are trying to be someone we are not, without realizing it. Those moments can last from a few minutes to a lifetime! They are not easy to spot because they are events that originate and happen entirely within our consciousness. And unless we have developed a ‘fine’ degree of self awareness we won’t be able to recognise we are not being our self! The basic principle is: If you try to be anything or anyone other than your self then a loss of happiness and some form of sorrow must result. A good analogy to describe the origins of such moments of sorrow is the mannequin party. Everyone turns up holding a mask on a stick in front of their face, which makes them almost (but not quite) impossible to recognize. You could say that they are both hiding and attempting to project an unreal image of themselves. Without being fully aware of it we do the same within our consciousness when we create what is known as a ‘subtle self image’. It’s as if we hold the self image like a mask in front of our consciousness and we attempt to ‘wear’ that image/mask. All our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are then ‘shaped by’ and ‘flow from’ that image. There are of course many ‘gross’ or obvious self images that we have all learned to create and hide ourselves behind. These include images based on what our bodies look like, what we do, the group that we ‘believe’ we belong to or align with (from a football team to a religion!), our family history, our nations etc. We create and use such images to define our sense of

identity and depending on the situation and circumstances we will switch between these images, which is like switching masks, as we wander through the party we call life! This is probably one reason why we have an identity crisis in the world in general, and why many people in particular, will at some stage of their life spend time and energy searching for themselves, as they try to find out who they are . . . exactly! It takes a little while to realize we are all no one! But that’s another seminar! In the meantime, while we may realize the obvious i.e. that we are not what we do, not what we look like in the mirror and not where we were born, we will probably find it hard to see the more ‘subtle masks’ that we wear and switch between during the course of an average day. There are many. They are all sources of sorrow simply because they block out or distort the light of our natural happiness. Here are seven of many masks, many subtle images that we create and identify with. What you might call the 7 Masks of Zorrow! Remember everything that we think, feel, decide and do is shaped by our subtle self image. Which of the following do you recognize within your self most strongly? The Sensible Mask The creator and wearer of this self image tends to consider themselves to be the person who always does the right thing, the reasonable thing, the common sense thing. They tend to think, “I am the one to bring some grounded sense to you and your/this situation”. They want to be seen by others as balanced, stable, sensibly correct and correctly sensible! They will be quickly on hand to give good advice and guidance the moment they sense something might be ‘going south’! They will allow themselves the feeling of satisfaction once their advice has been dispensed but they will get easily frustrated at the sight of others

Four Steps to Create a

by Sandy Carter

In social media, listening acts as a guide through the ever-changing and interesting world of the blogosphere. Why? Because listening is an ongoing process that is necessary to keep a strategy fresh and competitive. It enables decision-makers to find and better understand opportunities and stakeholders. So, exactly how do you go about listening? • Determine your target audience. Once an organization has determined whom to target, it's critical to understand where to engage them online. A common misperception is that all social networks are the same and therefore everyone is on the same platform. • Identify the influencers. Through social analytics, an organization can determine which individuals are sharing content and links and their sentiment about it. Facebook and Twitter are likely places that influencers and target audiences frequent, but are just the tip of the iceberg. • Know the keywords and trends. Determine the topics that are important to your business and identify them as potential keywords. Then through listening, establish if that is the language your audience is interested in. • Form a social business strategy. An organization's social business strategy should address the goals and approach the company will take. Relevancy and reputation management should be part of the goals. Sandy Carter. doing what they consider to be stupid and nonsensical. And then they will worry that others won’t actually follow their advice, which is why they can so easily and regularly lose their happiness. The Mask of Shame People wear this mask as soon as they think they have done something wrong, which is frequently. They even watch and identify with others wrong doings and feel guilty on their behalf. Most frequent thoughts include, “I messed up again . . . I always get this wrong . . . I am not able to do this without letting someone down”. Seeing oneself as guilty is easy if we had a childhood full of judgemental parents or scolding teachers and the regular insinuations that, “You are wrong again!” The built in sadness that lives at the heart of guilt and shame will always be waiting to prick any bubble of genuine happiness. The Subserviant Mask When we wear this mask we bow down to others in our minds. We hold others as greater than us. Thoughts emerge like, “I wish I could do that . . . I can never be that good . . . I am just lucky to know them”, are all signs that our self image is always of ‘smallness’ in comparison to others. As we suppress our self in this way we suppress our natural happiness making any lasting contentment impossible. The Superior Mask We wear this mask when we think of our self as the one who doesn’t just know but ‘knows everything’ the most clearly and the most deeply. We think of ourselves as the ‘greater one’, the one who has a solution to everything. There will be an air of superiority and an attitude of ‘I know better’. This is a self image that guarantees we will see others as threats to our throne. There will be the fear that maybe we don’t know best/deepest/clearest and that ‘they’ actually do. This will gnaw away at our

happiness on the inside but we probably won’t notice it. The Seductive Mask This is the mask of the needy, worn when we want others attention so that we can feel valued. We attempt to attract others energy to us. This is not referring to ‘seductive’ at a physical level. That gross self image based on form has already been transcended (!). Seductive here means the elegant words, the flattering observations, the warmest compliments all expressed in ways that are mentally and emotionally attractive to ‘the other’. We then create and carry a certain pride when others gravitate towards us as a result of what we believe to be our magnetic attractiveness. This becomes a dragon that needs to be fed regularly and when the food is threatened, as it will be every day, the anxiety will dispatch any happiness with clinical efficiency. The Sensitive Mask This is a popular mask worn when we see ourselves as the one who cares most and best. We are always on the lookout for opportunities to ‘be there’ for others in their emotional and personal crisis. The ‘sensitive’ will think, “Only I can appreciate what you are going through. . . only I can help you to deal with your life challenges . . . only I can sense what’s really going on here.” The arrogance that sits in behind this mask is always swinging between fear and anger. Fear that we may miss something and lose our reputation as the oh so ‘sensitive and caring one’. And anger that others might not allow us to get under their skin in order to fully sense and understand what they are going through so that we can be seen to care for and about them. And so happiness will be a fleeting and dependent on the one for whom we are being so sensitive.

The Mask of Sorrow Well they are all masks that induce sorrow but the king of all the masks is the self image based on sorrowfulness. It is worn most frequently when we decide to feel sorry for ourselves. Even when we may be shouting at others, “I don’t want your pity”, we are pitying ourselves that we have attracted the pity of others. On the one hand we use others pity to enhance our sorrowful self image, and then we fervently reject it and make ourselves feel isolated with the thought, “Am I the only one who feels sorry for me?”. These subtle self images, that we create and wear as masks on the inside, are of course the ‘ego at work’. It is just a subtler level of the habit of creating and identifying with something we are not. That something is always an image, or a concept, or an idea, or just a belief. None of these masks is ever the true self. They can never be the ‘real’ I. The true face behind the mask is the creator and

wearer of the mask. It is the face that can never be seen. And happiness is only possible when we have no mask. That’s when we are aware of our self as the faceless face. . . so to speak! But for most of us that can sound a bit … scary! So up pops The Scary Mask! Questions: Which of the seven masks do you think you tend to create and wear most frequently? Reflection: How would you describe the precise nature of your sorrow when you hide behind this mask? Action: Watch for those sorrowful feelings this coming week and as soon as you become aware of them take of your mask and see what difference it makes. Dear Dear Dr. Weil, When my friend found out that the diazepam her husband was taking is addictive, she took him off immediately, cold turkey. Now he is suffering with the horrible side effects of withdrawal. Are there any natural remedies to ease these effects? Diazepam (one brand name is Valium) is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant prescribed to relieve anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures and to help control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal (indeed, some drug experts call it "alcohol in a pill"). It belongs to a class of drugs. Â As with many drugs that have depressant effects on the CNS, it is a big mistake to stop taking this type of medication cold turkey. The withdrawal can be dangerous, and you are likely to experience worsening of conditions the drug was originally prescribed to relieve. The way to break dependence is to wean off the drug gradually, according to your physician's instructions. Because diazepam can be habit-forming, no one should take more than the dosage prescribed, take it more frequently, or continue to take it for any longer than your physician has directed. In any case, never take it for more than four months. Long term or excessive use can lead to "tolerance" - meaning that the dosage will become less effective and you'll need more to get the same effects you did initially. All benzodiazepines slow the bio-electrical activity of the brain. When you stop taking these drugs suddenly, brain activity can rebound so much as to cause seizures. Other withdrawal symptoms can include abdominal and muscle cramps, sweating, tremors, and vomiting, and tapering off these drugs should be done under medical supervision.

Dr. Weil It may be of some benefit to use the herb valerian (Valeriana officinalis) to reduce anxiety and as an aid to sleep. Valerian is available as a tincture, extract and in tablet form. Look for products standardized to one percent valerenic acid. Take two capsules every 4-6 hours as needed. Acupuncture might help as well. To help with relaxation and stress reduction during withdrawal, I also suggest practicing a breathing technique called the Relaxing Breath. "Practicing regular, mindful breathing can be calming and energizing and can even help with stress-related health problems ranging from panic attacks to digestive disorders." Since breathing is something we can control and regulate, it is a useful tool for achieving a relaxed and clear state of mind. I recommend three breathing exercises to help relax and reduce stress: The Stimulating Breath, The 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise (also called the Relaxing Breath), and Breath Counting. Try each and see how they affect your stress and anxiety levels.

Exercise 1:

The Stimulating Breath (also called the Bellows Breath) The Stimulating Breath is adapted from a yogic breathing technique. Its aim is to raise vital energy and increase alertness. Inhale and exhale rapidly through your nose, keeping your mouth closed but relaxed. Your breaths in and out should be equal in duration, but as short as possible. This is a noisy breathing exercise. Try for three in-and-out breath cycles per second. This produces a quick movement of the diaphragm, suggesting a bellows. Breathe normally after each cycle. Do not do for more than 15 seconds on your first try. Each time you practice the Stimulating

Breath, you can increase your time by five seconds or so, until you reach a full minute. If done properly, you may feel invigorated, comparable to the heightened awareness you feel after a good workout. You should feel the effort at the back of the neck, the diaphragm, the chest and the abdomen. Try this breathing exercise the next time you need an energy boost and feel yourself reaching for a cup of coffee.

• Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound.

Exercise 2:

• This is one breath. Now inhale again and repeat the cycle three more times for a total of four breaths.

The 4-7-8 (or Relaxing Breath) Exercise This exercise is utterly simple, takes almost no time, requires no equipment and can be done anywhere. Although you can do the exercise in any position, sit with your back straight while learning the exercise. Place the tip of your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth, and keep it there through the entire exercise. You will be exhaling through your mouth around your tongue; try pursing your lips slightly if this seems awkward.

We have healthy choices for you. Items that are:

• Close your mouth and inhale quietly through your nose to a mental count of four. • Hold your breath for a count of seven. • Exhale completely through your mouth, making a whoosh sound to a count of eight.

Note that you always inhale quietly through your nose and exhale audibly through your mouth. The tip of your tongue stays in position the whole time. Exhalation takes twice as long as inhalation. The absolute time you spend on each phase is not important; the ratio of 4:7:8 is important. If you have trouble holding your breath, speed the exercise up but keep to the ratio of 4:7:8 for the three phases. With practice you can slow it all down and get used to inhaling and exhaling more and more deeply. This exercise is a natural tranquilizer for the nervous system. Unlike tranquilizing drugs, which are often effective when you first take them but then lose their power over time, this exercise is subtle when you first try it but gains in power with repetition and practice. Do it at least twice a day. You cannot do it too frequently. Do not do more than four breaths at one time for the first month of practice. Later, if you wish, you can extend it to eight breaths. Motivation for Change by Karen Paolino

As you reflect on the events over the last year, remember, the storms you have encountered have only made you stronger. You are wiser, you are more alive, and you are headed for victory. You're brightest days are right out in front of you! Nothing can hold you back!

"Dearest angels, I am asking for your support and guidance to help me achieve my intentions and goals I have set into motion for this new year. Please help me to recognize when I stop myself in fear, procrastination, excuses or not feeling worthy enough, and remind me of my inner courage, determination and the power I have to achieve my goals. Most importantly please help me to believe in myself, to move forward with faith, and help me to know beyond any doubt that the divine is supporting me, helping me and guiding me until I become one with my desired outcome for my highest and best, better than I could ever imagine." Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Vermont, and Washington. Here is what you can do! A toxics-free New Year's resolution for the MA Senate From all of us at the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, Happy New Year! The legislative session resumes today, and protection from toxic chemicals should be a top priority for senators in 2012. Please call your state senator and ask him or her to make a New Year's Resolution to pass the Safer Alternatives Bill. Step 1: Find out who your state senator is if you don't know already. http://www. malegislature.gov/People/ FindMyLegislator

The Safer Alternatives Bill will create a pragmatic and flexible program in Massachusetts to replace toxic chemicals with safer alternatives, wherever feasible. In this economy, the bill is needed more than ever. The Safer Alternatives program will help Massachusetts businesses stay competitive on the global market which is rapidly moving towards a demand for safer products and services. The bill made a significant step toward becoming a law late last year when the Massachusetts Legislature's Joint Committee on the Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture released the bill. The next steps will be for the bill to get a favorable report from the Joint Committee on Ways and Means then be brought to a vote in the Senate. After that, the bill will need to pass through the House of Representatives before becoming law. The Safer Alternatives Bill is about to begin its tenth year before the Massachusetts legislature. Ten years is too long to wait for protection from toxic chemicals! Please call your state senator today and ask them to do everything they can to pass the Safer Alternatives Bill this year.

Step 2: Place your calls. Use the State House Switchboard: 617-7222000. When you reach your senator, or one of their staff members, tell them your name and where you live, and urge them to: "Please make it your New Year's Resolution to support S-2079 An Act for a competitive economy through safer alternatives to toxic chemicals (also known as 'The Safer Alternatives Bill'). This is a critically important bill to protect our health from toxic chemicals and keep Massachusetts businesses competitive in the global economy. Please make it a priority to see that it passes soon in the new year." Senators will have thousands of bills to choose from this year. Let's make the Safer Alternatives Bill the first one to grab their attention as they return to the State House.

The Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow (AHT) is a coalition of citizens, scientists, health professionals, workers, and educators seeking preventive action on toxic hazards. Unfortunately, current environment and health policies do not protect us. Our individual rights and our quality of life are threatened by harmful pollution and products. Our goal is to correct fundamental flaws in government policies that allow harm to our health and environment.

Once you develop this technique by practicing it every day, it will be a very useful tool that you will always have with you. Use it whenever anything upsetting happens - before you react. Use it whenever you are aware of internal tension. Use it to help you fall asleep. This exercise cannot be recommended too highly. Everyone can benefit from it.

Exercise 3:

Breath Counting If you want to get a feel for this challenging work, try your hand at breath counting, a deceptively simple technique much used in Zen practice. Sit in a comfortable position with the spine straight and head inclined slightly forward. Gently close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Then let the breath come naturally without trying to influence it. Ideally it will be quiet and slow, but depth and rhythm may vary. • To begin the exercise, count "one" to yourself as you exhale. • The next time you exhale, count "two," and so on up to "five." • Then begin a new cycle, counting "one" on the next exhalation. Never count higher than "five," and count only when you exhale. You will know your attention has wandered when you find yourself up to "eight," "12," even "19."

by Trisha Matthies from The Healing Moon

In January, as one year ends and another begins, we often have cause for self-reflection. We may start by examining our habits, our health, our life style, our accomplishments and even our failures. It is a time for us to make promises to ourselves about change, such as foods we will not eat, negative habits we will stop, or routines we will begin. But what do we really need to change? It seems we tend to make resolutions to alter our physical selves, focused on fitting into a smaller jean size. Indisputably, having a healthy physical body is an important goal. But should our only focus be on losing weight and looking good? Perhaps if we focused on our entire being, our total self, we would find more balance in our lives. Why should total balance be a goal? Because, balance leads to overall wellness and

a healthier way of living your life. This year, I wanted to offer you a different approach to your physical wellness. In today’s world where television make-overs and magazine models present only sculpted bodies, with flawless faces and brilliant smiles, it is easy to get caught up in perfect ideals. Most often the resolutions we make are for an ideal self, which can result in unrealistic, harsh diets, and impractical workout regimens. This harsh treatment is more like torture and punishment to our bodies and our psyche. Let’s face it, an extreme change in this manner is most likely not sustainable. Perhaps we should turn the focus inward, towards a “healthier physical being”. How often do you consider your internal physical body, such as your organs, muscles, immune system, or the overall energy level of the body? These areas may continued on page 40 . . .

not be seen externally, but if any of these are unhealthy or neglected, they can certainly manifest into a physical condition or illness. This year, maybe you can focus on your entire physical “being” instead of just the physical external body that we show the world.

Rest enables our bodies to relax, to replenish, and handle daily stress.

Resolution #1 LISTEN: One way to begin focusing on the inner physical body is to listen to it. Our bodies do talk to us all the time, but most often, we do not pay attention. Therefore, the first resolution to help create more physical wellness is to start listening to your body. Our bodies send us obvious signs of imbalance or illness, and when our bodies talk, it is best we listen. Our bodies tell us when we need to nurture it, or rest it. Our bodies can expresses to us that we need to move and exercise more, or if we are feeding it enough healthy foods or vitamins. When we do not respond to these needs, we become unbalanced and may end up with illness or disease. If we take the time to listen to our bodies, we begin to respect it. For example, if we are stiff and sore, maybe we need to move our body more gently, or if our body’s skin is not radiant and glowing, maybe we need to focus on our nutrition. This connecting to our bodies brings awareness which can help us uncover our deeper needs. Another great way to listen to our bodies is to stop and be still for a few minutes each day. Simply check in with how you are feeling, what you are sensing, and mentally ask yourself, "What do I need to be balanced today?" The more we tap into this intuitive listening, the more you will hear. Resolution #2 REST: If you are someone who eats right and works out regularly, you may be thinking that you are doing all you need to do to accomplish your goals for a

healthy body. Perhaps you fulfill the exercise and healthy food nurturing needs, but when was the last time you rested your body, truly pampered it and treated it with nurturing and tenderness? Today’s world is so fast paced that we tend to forget to give ourselves a welldeserved break. Rest is a physical need as well, which is most often ignored. People believe it is more important to achieve all their goals, get all their errands done, or finish all their tasks. We tend to add more responsibilities to our days, making it difficult to finish our “To Do” lists! But if we ignore the human need for rest, we can create bigger problems than not completing your daily lists. Rest enables our bodies to relax, to replenish, and handle daily stress. It helps to restore our physical selves, such as our muscles and organs, so we can continue to get up and go the next morning. Ultimately, if this general need is not met, we begin to malfunction not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. Be aware of whether your body needs to move and be flexible or whether it requires rest and recuperation. Because rest is so important, making a new year’s resolution to get more down time, sleep or rest will contribute to a healthier body. Resolution #3 NURTURE: Another area of the physical body that you should be aware of is its energy level. This is not quite the same as the rest or sleep previously mentioned. I am referring to how, who, where, and when you share and give your physical energy. Some people, especially women, tend to give their energy away, taking care of everyone else and leaving little energy left over for themselves. This alone can cause the physical being to

become extremely unbalanced. Ask yourself, is your body tired or is your energy depleted? Do you take time during the day to nurture your own energy? Often, fatigue is not created from lack of sleep, but lack of energy. When we allow our energy to become depleted we can weaken our immune systems and manifest emotional depression, mental stress, or physically discomfort. Often women experiencing physical pain or exhaustion leave no time for themselves as they fill the roles of mothers, career women, caring wife, and housekeeper. Your energy can become so depleted that it puts stress on your physical body, creating discomfort and pain such as neck aches, headaches, and minor illness. Certainly, when you are depleted, other symptoms can arise such as lack of concentration, memory loss, fatigue, and frustration. Begin by taking time to nurture yourself. It can be as effortless as an afternoon break with a warm cup of herbal tea, or as wonderful as a massage or reiki treatment. Nurturing yourself simply means taking the time to give back to YOU! Once you learn to manage your energy as well as your time, you can bring your energy and body back into balance. Think about how this new focus on balance can create wonderful changes in the physical body without an extreme attitude. Making resolutions to listen to, care for, reenergize and nurture your entire psychical being are just as important as resolving to fit into that smaller jean size!

Our graduates say it best:

“I want you to know that everywhere I have interviewed, the Spa Tech diploma makes all the difference – to the point where people have said they won’t consider anyone from certain local schools. Feel free to use this email as a testimony. You guys are the best! Even at State Boards you know exactly who was from Spa Tech because they were completely prepared.” ~ Jessica (Class of 2006)

You deserve an education that honors who you are and who you are becoming. A great education is spiritually transforming: You overcome your limitations and realize your highest potential, at the same time you learn the foundation and skills to succeed. Give Yourself the Gift of a Career You Love. Enroll for January Now! I’m sure you have questions. All schools claim to be the best but what is the reality? The only way to know is to visit the schools, talk to the students (a must) and also talk to employers Nancy Risley, RPP, RPE, Founder and Co-Owner if you can. These are

the people who really understand the quality of the programs. As for me, I have loved this field for over 35 years. There is nothing like the feeling of helping people to feel and look better. As a profession that allows flexibility to raise children or follow additional interests, it supports life long learning and a
