Dear Friends, It was the spring of 2002 when I first launched Healthy Living Magazine. As scary as it was to approach my first couple of advertisers (now my friends) I dug deep within myself and fought through all the negative beliefs and self doubts. I stuck with it, made some mistakes along the way, but I can honestly say that I am doing what I love. And now realize I am doing my life’s work! I have been blessed tremendously and I have experienced such growth and healing along the way. Not to mention the opportunity to work with such great healers like Dr. Bernie Siegel, Dr. Joan Borysenko, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Andrew Weil, Mark Mincolla and now, Alberto Villoldo. As we approach our 10th anniversary this September 2012, I think back about the wonderful resource that I created, built up from the foundation, planting seeds along the way while watching them grow. What an accomplishment. I am so proud to continually strive to provide an arena for the interchange of ideas and experiences, by which I hope to inform, nurture, and inspire each and everyone’s health and well being. Well, I’m proud to share with you the next phase of growth: Healthy Living Magazine Goes Virtual! Overcoming Superbug Colds and Flus

When Nobel Prize winning Scottish biologist Alexander Fleming discovered antibiotics in 1928 he warned the world against their overuse. Now, more than 80 years after Fleming's warning we are spending over $10 billion annually on antibiotics in America, apparently to our own peril. In 2008 a bacterial super strain called New Delhi Matallo Beta Lactamase 1, or NDM 1 began circling the globe. Thus far the killer strain has demonstrated resistance to fifteen high powered antibiotics. In March of this year the associated press reported that NDM 1 was turning up in American army hospitals in Afghanistan, and is now believed to have found its way into the U.S. Also in March of this past year CNN reported that Carbapen Resistant Klebseilla Pneumonia (CRKP) killer superbug was now in all fifty states, and that previous outbreaks have demonstrated a 35% death rate. Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) has been an ongoing health concern now for the past decade and is now said to kill 48,000 Americans hospital patients each year. The bad news trend is clear. The bugs that have always made us sick are now superbugs that are killing us. There is good news however. What orthodox medicine can no longer do natural medicine can. In April of 2011 Portuguese researchers from the University of Beira discovered that coriander oil at a 1.6% solution was effective at killing twelve lethal drug resistant strains of bacteria including: e coli, salmonella, and MRSA. In 2009, University of Sydney researchers reported that Manuka honey diluted to 1/10 solution could effectively kill the NDM 1 strain of bacteria. Manuka honey produces hydrogen peroxide in the body, and contains over 800 methyl

glyoxyl agents that strip the immunity of bacteria and destroy their protein. In 2008 University prof. London researcher Dr. Ronald Cutler performed human studies and found that stabilized allicin from garlic cured 100% of 53 patients with MRSA infection. The University of Texas is currently developing new air filtration technology that filters out 99.97% of all bacteria because of colloidal silver in the filtration system. Dr. Harry Preuss of Georgetown University Medical School found that oil of oregano has a powerful agent called carvacral that kills e. coli, and staph bacteria as effectively as antibiotics without the side effects. Further more, like all natural antibiotics, killer bacteria can not resist against it. Finally, with all the fear about super viruses like bird flu, it's important to mention that we have had a natural cure for almost all superbug viruses including bird flu since 1982. While researching at the CDC in Atlanta in 1982, Kabara discovered that lauric acid from coconut oil effectively killed most viruses including bird flu, most bacteria, fungi, and protozoa. Nature can not resist against itself. The mutational development of unnatural medicines has created a mutational reaction from the world of germs. Not to worry, nature has an answer.

Food For Thought 10 Tips for Healthier Kids at Dinnertime

1. Did you know takes 10 times for kids to

develop a taste for new foods? Don’t give up! That means your kids cannot give up on carrots, cukes, cherry tomatoes, edamame, fish, or anything until they have tried it 10 times. And you can’t either! 2. Make a list of easy dinners that come together in a short amount of time. One of mine is to whip up a bowl of pasta, cheese and chicken. Cook with whatever your family likes. We use whole wheat pasta, Smart Balance (margarine), and pre-cut cooked chicken. I always have cooked chicken and pasta with frozen broccoli florets. Take the pasta and broccoli, boil up and then drain. Take a frying pan, toss in 2 dollops of Smart Balance, 1 tablespoon of chopped garlic, add the chicken and sauté on medium heat. Add ½ cup of 2% milk. Sometimes, I even use half and half. Put the pasta and broccoli on a plate. Add your chicken and sauce. Buy shredded cheese— sprinkle it on top. Just make sure there is LOTS of broccoli. 3. Make mealtime quick and easy! Dinner should fit your schedule. I’m a busy Mom. In fact, I’m a busy person with an elderly family member in assisted living that needs attention and time. I have a young son and a business to run. I coach travel soccer for a team of 12-year-old boys. I have three morning programs that meet at 7:00 AM at the schools here in town. Plus, I have to get my runs and exercise in or I feel totally off. Don’t overcomplicate dinner or you will make yourself miserable. 4. Frozen is good. I love frozen veggies originated here in the US. If you buy fresh produce, you don’t know how long it takes to get to your supermarket from the moment it is picked. For this same reason, we buy frozen

fish. I think it is better than buying fresh - at least for my family. Think about it: swordfish is fresh until you remember that it is caught, put on ice, and on a boat for potentially several weeks until you buy it at the store. 5. Don’t fear fish! I sauté frozen cod in a pan with Smart Balance, water, and lemon juice and my son LOVES it! And he is picky! 6. Let your kids help you in the kitchen. They feel very proud to be part of the dinner process. Put some good music on while you are cooking. Even sing and dance! Also play music when you exercise. It makes it fun and they pick up on your healthy habits. 7. After dinner, leave the house for a good walk. Go for a bike ride or do anything active that fits the season. Just get out of there! 8. Dessert could be fruit. My son can devour a whole plate of strawberries, blueberries, bananas, apples, watermelon. Remember that whatever is in season works better on the wallet. 9. Taco night! Canned beans, veggies, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, chopped chicken and some whole wheat tortillas. That’s it. You’re not cooking; the kids get to make their own tacos and enjoy it. 10. Forsythia Fruit Pinyin: Lian Qiao

Lian Qiao is an important herb to clear infections from the body. If you have ever taken Chinese herbs for a cold or flu, you've probably taken Lian Qiao (Forsythia Fruit.) The holiday season is a time for gathering with family and friends, for festivities, decorating, partying, love, connection and remembrances. It is also a season of high emotions, overeating, overspending, drinking, (tempting treats), decreased exercise, and time demands . . . which create a perfect recipe for disrupting diabetes control. How does one maintain good blood sugar control during the holiday season? (and still have fun!!) The following guidelines can make the holiday season less stressful and more rewarding. #1 The most important thing you can do to manage your diabetes during the holidays is to PLAN AHEAD. (AND plan to enjoy yourself.)

#2 Remember the golden rule: “EVERYTHING

IN MODERATION.” #3 Know your meal plan inside and out to ensure you are prepared for all occasions. #4 Check your blood sugar regularly. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), the ideal blood sugar goals (any time of year) are 80-130 mg/dl before

eating and no higher than 140mg/dl 2 hours after eating. Values higher than these may indicate too much holiday cheer going on. #5 Have a healthy snack before going out so you don’t give into cravings. Decide ahead of time what you plan to eat and how much. Imagine eating only what you plan. #6 Carbohydrates have the biggest effect on your blood sugar. Distribute them evenly during the day. “Carbs” include breads, chips, pretzels, cereals, crackers, candy, desserts, starchy beans, fruits, juice, starchy vegetables, sugar sweetened sodas, and milk products. Consume carbs together with proteins (fish, meat, eggs, dairy, nuts), high fiber vegetables, and healthy fats—in order to control blood sugars. Drink lots of water, non-alcoholic, sugar-free, and caffeine free beverages while joining in on the festivities. #15 When shopping or doing errands – bring along healthy snacks like apples or carrot sticks to avoid fast food restaurants and food courts. #16 If your diabetes provider has told you it’s alright for you to have an occasional drinkmake sure you have food with it and stick to one serving of alcohol. ***An alcohol equivalent is a 12oz. beer, 5 oz. of wine, or 1.5oz. (1 shot) of liquor.***

These are high calorie, low nutrient drinks that do nothing for you nutritionally. Speak with your diabetes provider about substituting alcohol for fat calories. Certain alcoholic drinks are also high in carbohydrates (for example: beer, sweet wines, and sweet liqueurs.) Alcohol inhibits the liver from releasing stored glucose (and may lower one’s

blood sugar initially; however, a rebound effect—of unusually high blood sugars—can also occur). The effect of alcohol on each individual varies. #17 If you do get a cough or cold over the holidays, some over-the-counter (OTC) medications contain sugar and may react with your medications. Speak with your diabetes provider or pharmacist to make sure you won’t suffer from serious drug reactions. #18 If you do overindulge in food and drink, plan to increase fiber and decrease fat at other meals. And don’t forget the protein. Excellent low-fat/protein-balanced meals are chicken soup, a small sandwich on whole grain bread, salads with turkey or chicken and diet dressing. Lots of low calorie vegetables are advised in general. #19 Remember Thanksgiving, Christmas, Chanukah, New Years and others are only a few days out of a six week holiday season. Doing Less Creates More Meaning, Satisfaction, and Results

It is easy to fall into the trap of busyness – constantly going from one thing to another – from demands at home to demands at work to emails to exercise to relationships . . . with no time for stopping, reflecting, or recharging. We can become like a carpenter who doesn’t have the time to stop and sharpen his or her tools. As a result, the tools become dull; more and more effort is required; less and less is accomplished. We think we must move faster, work harder. It’s a vicious circle. A doctor friend I have known for many years was recently severely injured in a head-on collision with a driver who had a seizure on the Golden Gate Bridge. She broke nearly every bone in her body and was in a coma for several months. It is a miracle that she has not only survived but appears to be in the process of a nearly complete recovery. In her online journal, she writes with a sense of deep knowing and powerful urgency: “We must remember to get on with our lives. Do what is important. If you haven't been married, GET MARRIED. If you need to get divorced, get divorced. Just do what is essential and important. That is what matters.” The truth is, you are both carpenter and tools, for you are responsible for keeping the blade, which is yourself, honed. However, busyness not only dulls the blade, resulting in unnecessary and ineffectual effort, it can convince us that we don’t even have the time to pull out the grinding stone and keep ourselves sharp. Sometimes the day’s furious deadlines make us believe we are so busy that we don’t even have a minute — much less ten or twenty — to stop, pause, and reflect. We convince ourselves that we can’t do the very things that we most want, or the things that would make all our efforts easier and more effective. In short, we become accustomed to using a dull tool, and we may stop even

noticing how much extra effort we are exerting for such diminishing returns. Unlike a carpenter, we don’t need to do anything extra to return to our original state of sharpness and unbridled full-functioning. We only need to do less of what gets in the way. As Shunryu Suzuki, the author of Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind, says, “You are perfect just as you are.” And, as he adds somewhat cryptically, “You can use a little improvement.” When I first read that quote thirty years ago, I found it hard to comprehend. Yes, it was a paradox, but it seemed rather puzzling and not very helpful. Now that I have had many years to ponder it, I believe it is one of the kindest and most freeing pieces of wisdom to live by. What is interesting is that we usually become overbusy for laudable reasons — we are pursuing our dreams, being responsible citizens, assisting our family members or colleagues, and seeking happiness and real freedom. Having a lot to do is not innately a bad thing. Most of us love being active. I do. But this becomes over-the-top busyness when it makes us feel depleted rather than complete, when we run down the path toward freedom and real accomplishment but find them getting farther away. The Power of Sabbath When my two children were in elementary school, a weekly day of doing less was an important part of our family ritual. We

borrowed some ideas from the Jewish Sabbath as well as Buddhist Day of Mindfulness practices. At the heart of our day we had three simple rules that we applied from sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday evening: Rule #1: There was no spending money. Rule #2: There was no watching television. Rule #3: We did something together as a family. These three guidelines produced significant results in the quality of those twenty-four hours. What a relief to not buy anything, not have the television on, and spend time simply enjoying each other’s presence. My wife and I talked more with our two children; we read books, told stories, played games, went for walks, and shared meals. The biggest benefit of this structured break was that, for a day, the pace of our lives slowed down and our family connections increased. One of my favorite parts of this ritual was the formal ending. We observed the Jewish tradition of looking for the first three stars to become visible on Saturday evening, signaling that Sabbath was over. It was fun and exciting for the four of us to stand on our deck together, seeing who could find the three stars as the sun faded and nighttime slowly emerged. Of course, since we live in Marin County, dense fog sometimes forced us to use our imaginations. Instituting rest and simplicity is not a magic wand for perfection. There were occasional disagreements, grumpiness, and boredom. But our imperfections often emerge as the most endearing parts of ourselves, and those “Sabbath” days stand out as important building blocks, and are great memories, for our stillgrowing family. You don’t need to have children to create a regular Sabbath or retreat in your life. In fact, you can do this if you live by yourself, with others, or a family of any size.

We are born with all the wisdom, playfulness, and imagination we need; we just sometimes need help and reminders to return to our senses and get out of our own way. It is the firm knowledge that nothing extra is required. You have everything you need; just let go of whatever distractions, fears, and busyness might be hampering you. It’s that simple. Allow yourself to think and feel and live that way. Embodying and acting from this place results in greater composure, and when we act with composure, we are more effective. Try these practices: Once a week, or once a month, create a “Sabbath” for yourself or family. Create some simple rules such as – no spending money, no TV, doing something as a family, or some activity that provides nourishment. Once a day for the next week, experiment with this thought – You are perfect just as you are. Try writing it and/or speaking it. Notice that it is true. Once a day for the next week, experiment with asking yourself: What is one project you want to accomplish. Be specific. What are the next steps? Busyness, and the difficulties and demands of our lives demand a good deal of attention, and respect. At the same time, by bringing our habits into greater awareness and experimenting with challenging our assumptions, we can produce surprising results. Six Simple Strategies

We don’t often think of losing weight and becoming healthier as a way to live greener and become a better steward of the planet, but becoming lean and going green go hand-in-hand. Here are some easy ways to slim down, become healthier, and take better care of our beautiful planet.

1. Shop the perimeter of your

grocery store where all the fresh, healthy food is located, like fruits, vegetables, seafood, and meats. The packaged, processed, and frozen foods that often contain trans fats, high fructose corn syrup, and other unhealthy additives are typically found in the center of the store. This could also be a money-saving strategy, since fresh foods typically cost less than processed foods. It’s better for the environment because all that excessive packaging ends up in landfills. You are reducing waste as you’re reducing your waist! Don’t forget to bring reusable bags to the grocery store to cut down on the resources required to manufacture new paper and plastic bags as well the energy required to make them.

2. Hit the bulk aisle for healthy foods like

whole grains, nuts, and cereal to cut down on excessive packaging and save you some money. While refined, simple, and starchy carbohydrates, such as white bread, white rice, white pasta, and highly processed foods, can contribute to weight gain and can prevent weight loss; whole grains like oats, whole wheat pasta, brown rice, and quinoa can have the opposite effect. Not only are they the key to weight loss and weight maintenance, they

can also reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes. You are also requiring less energy from the planet when you eat food that is minimally processed. When you choose whole grains, the planet’s energy and resources aren’t expended taking apart the grain and processing, refining, and bleaching it. Those whole grains you’re eating are eventually processed or broken down, though. Guess where that energy comes from? You! So not only are you saving Earth’s precious resources and the energy required to process whole grains into white foods; your body is using its energy to break down those whole grains instead. To be gentler to the environment, bring your own containers or use brown paper bags from the produce section and reuse them several times because recycling the bag.

3. Walk, bike, or take mass

transit to run errands, visit your neighbor, attend worship services, or take the kids to school. It’s pretty clear how biking and walking can help you slim down, but mass transit calls for more exercise too since you have to travel to pick up and drop off points. Sure, all these methods require a little more time and planning ahead, but losing excess weight and becoming healthier while reducing carbon dioxide emissions, the leading cause of global warming, is definitely worth it!

4. Patronize farmers’ markets and put

yourself smack in the middle of the freshest, local, and seasonal bounty of fruits and vegetables that your community has to offer.

5 Goals for Developing a Holistic Health Plan for your Pet

Many pet owners are interested in offering their pets a more natural form of pet care. Here is a plan I have developed for my clients that I think will benefit your pets as well.

Goal #1 Preventing disease. This

goal seems simple enough; let’s prevent disease so that your pet never becomes ill. I would actually prefer to see healthy pets rather than ill ones. It’s obviously not practical or possible for a pet to never become ill, but we can do a lot to minimize illness. While vaccines may be appropriate at times, a holistic approach appreciates the fact that most of the diseases we see in practice are chronic degenerative diseases. Conventional medicine really does a poor job of preventing and treating these disorders, as it is better suited to treating acute problems like infectious disease. A holistic approach utilizes several steps in order to prevent disease. First, feeding a natural diet, free of harmful chemicals and byproducts, minimizes cell damage. Minimizing vaccines and the unnecessary use of medications and toxins, is also important. Finally, a well-prescribed

supplement regimen can reduce inflammation and oxidation in your pet’s body, decreasing the chances of your pet developing chronic diseases.

Goal #2 - Say NO to Drugs.

One of the most important aspects of a holistic health care plan for your pets is saying NO to drugs whenever possible, and finding alternatives to traditional medications. Drugs certainly have their place in the treatment of many diseases, and we shouldn’t totally abandon their use. In my opinion, they work best for acute problems (such as serious infections and the occasional flare-ups of chronic problems like allergies and arthritis.) More chronic problems (and often minor acute problems) respond best to alternative therapies like herbs, homeopathics, magnetic therapy, chiropractic, and acupuncture. Chronic use of conventional drugs is often more expensive than alternative treatments, and side effects are much more commonly encountered when using conventional medications than when alternative therapies are used. Additionally, many pets treated with chronic drug therapy develop side effects from these drugs, or even another disease from the drug therapy! This means that even more drugs are used to treat these secondary disorders, leading to further increases in side effects or second or third diseases.

Finding natural, alternative therapies is a safer, healthier approach for treating the pet with chronic problems. When drugs need to be used in treating diseases in pets, especially chronic diseases, the LOWEST dose of the drug that provides relief should be used for the SHORTEST amount of time. This approach minimizes side effects, and also gives the pet the

Goal #3 - Heal the pet rather than treat disease. In veterinary

school, which focuses only on conventional medicine, doctors learn to properly diagnose and treat signs and symptoms, and hopefully diseases. While there is nothing inherently wrong with this approach (even holistic doctors need to diagnose the correct problem before they can treat it,) if our ONLY concern is treating the disease then we are failing our patients.

patient is, for the most part, disease free. Notice I have not talked about curing disease. We can restore health even in pets which harbor a fatal disease such as cancer. They can be ““healthy” as long as possible, fighting off the cancer, keeping it in remission, and “living with their disease.” Talking about cancer as an example, Dr. Kevin Hahn, one of the contributors to my latest book, The Natural Vet’s Guide to Preventing and Treating Cancer in Dogs admonishes us not to forget that “there is a pet attached to that tumor.” Rightly so, his focus (and that of doctors who take a holistic view of health and disease) is on treating “pets with cancer” rather than “treating cancer.” This different approach is the essence of developing a holistic approach to caring for yourself as well as your pets.

Goal #4 - Offering hope for the hopeless. Offering “Hope

for the Hopeless” is actually my favorite of our 5 goals. Many cases of illness are considered hopeless by conventional standards. Maybe there are no therapies for the specific problem (an example is liver cancer,) or maybe the pet has not responded to the appropriate therapies. Before you give up, before you euthanize your pet, consider alternative therapies. I have seen way too many pets that were deemed “untreatable” that responded well to a holistic approach. While not every pet can be cured, many can heal enough to live a good quality life and coexist with their diseases. One of my favorite cases is Lexie, who was 2 years old at the time I saw her. She was correctly diagnosed with polyarthritis and treated by her conventional veterinarians, one of whom was a specialist in internal medicine. Unfortunately, the treatment made Lexie sick, and she also developeddiabetes due to her therapies. Her doctors told the owners that no more could be done for her and that she should be euthanized. Fortunately,

Lexie responded to a number of holistic therapies. She is doing great at this time. While she still has her polyarthritis, she has been in remission for several years and is taking minute amounts of medications that do not make her ill. Pets like Lexie are a prime reason why I remain committed to a holistic, integrative approach to pet care. It’s particularly rewarding to helps pets that conventional medicine cannot help. These cases are not considered “hopeless” when viewed from a holistic perspective.

Goal #5 - Saving money on pet care. I’m often asked if a holistic pet care program costs more than a traditional pet care program. In general, the answer is “no.” It’s usually less expensive to prevent problems rather than treat them. Additionally, using natural therapies usually, but not always, costs less than conventional drug therapy. There are several reasons for this. Supplements are usually less expensive than drugs, especially if generic medications are not available. Chronic drug therapy usually requires frequent laboratory monitoring of the pet to ensure side effects have not developed; this is usually not necessary with natural therapies. Drugs can cause secondary diseases, which require even more drugs to treat these diseases; this doesn’t happen when using natural therapies. For those times when a natural approach costs more, keep in mind that your pet will usually be healthier and live longer with this approach. It’s impossible to put a price on that!

And finally, I always encourage pet owners to use pet health insurance, which can cut the cost of any preventive or therapeutic program. If you want to save money on pet care, usually combining pet insurance with a natural health care program is the way to go. In the Northeast, people who have symptoms of this disorder start to experience it at this time of year. As the days grow shorter and access to natural light becomes limited, a mild to severe depression can set in. The worst part about it is, you may not know

enjoyed activities, such as social interactions and intimacy. SAD is thought to be caused by a disturbance in the sleep-wake cycle. Less sunlight leads to higher levels of the hormone melatonin, which can affect mood. Typical treatments for SAD include anti-depressant medicines which aren’t always effective and are known to have side effects. Light or phototherapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) are also useful. Light therapy (exposure to special bright lights) can be effective in as many as 70 percent of those affected. For unknown reasons, three-quarters of those affected by SAD are women. And you know the saying, “if momma ain’t happy, nobody’s happy.” So what's the best way to get back in balance? From a holistic perspective, there are things you can do to combat the winter blues:

Ten Tips

for Detoxing

This is the perfect time of year to clean things up. With New Year's just around the corner, you can get a jumpstart on your resolutions by applying a few of these detox tips. Wake-Up Drink. First thing upon waking, and on an empty stomach, drink 1 cup of hot filtered or spring water with the juice from half of one lemon and two pinches of cayenne pepper. The lemon stimulates your digestion and the cayenne enhances circulation and blood flow.

Contrast Shower. Try

your own at-home version of an old naturopathic hydrotherapy cure. Each time you take a hot shower, follow it by a cold rinse (60 seconds). The "contrast" stimulates circulation, your immune system, and your ability to detox via your skin. Your pores will tighten and you will feel invigorated and ready for the day. This will really wake you up on a cold December morn!

Shake It Up. Jump on a trampoline for 3-to-5 minutes at a time. If you don't own a trampoline, you can simulate the movement by jumping in place. Keep your shoulders loose. This stimulates your whole body and is

particularly useful for stimulating your lymph drainage system. If you are prone to allergies or cysts, this will be very helpful.

Fever Baths. Take a warm bath in

the evening and add one cup of Epsom salts to soothe, relax, and detox. You can increase the benefits of a fever bath by drinking 2-to3 cups of hot tea while in the bath to work up a sweat. Try this recipe: Simmer some fresh ginger slices in water, tossing in one tablespoon of dried yarrow flowers. Steep for 15 minutes, strain, and drink. Yarrow and ginger have been shown to stimulate sweating, which helps the body release toxins.

Take a News Break. Observe a

news fast for 3-to-7 days to limit toxic thoughts, which can undermine your health. Avoid news or other emotionally disturbing information from the Internet, magazines, movies, newspapers, radio, and television. Detoxing these "stressful" exposures and replacing them with deep breathing, relaxing activities like walking or yoga, or reading a book, can give your mind and body a much needed rest.

The present health care system and developing health care trends Hippocrates once said: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” There are two primary forms of medicine: Intervention and Prevention. Our present health care budget in America is $2.1 trillion per year. Only 1% is allocated for prevention. The World Health Organization’s publication of World Health Report 2000 judged the performance of health care and health care systems of all the world’s industrial nations. America’s present system of intervention finished 72nd in level of health in the world and 37th in overall health system’s performance. By comparison, the tiny nation of San Marino finished 5th and 3rd accordingly. One of the chief reasons for our poor standing is that we have not yet adopted a national program to educate the public on the art of disease prevention.

However, a growing number of Americans are beginning to take part in a culture shift toward accepting greater personal responsibility for better health through disease prevention. According to the CCAM (National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) National Health Interview Survey 1997 CAM (Complimentary and Alternative Medicine) therapies (acupuncture, chiropractic, vitamins, herbs, mind-body etc.) are used by 62% of American adults. In addition, they found that out of pocket expenses relating to CAM in 1997 reached an estimated $27 billion. This figure is equal to the total spent for all U.S. physician services combined. They also found that total CAM visits between 1990-1997 rose from 427 million to 629 million far exceeding visits to all U.S. primary care physicians. Even with our evolving CAM interests there is still a tendency for reliance on the practitioner. Nutrition remains the single most powerful means of improving our health care system through greater self-reliance.

As long as the nation refuses to adopt a national disease prevention program (including nutrition education) the onus remains first on the family system and ultimately on each and every individual. The current health and nutritional status of the American family The McGovern Senate Sub-committee of 1972 was the first to look at the health and nutritional status of America. They heard 6 years of testimony from 1,100 of the world’s foremost scientific experts from 8 different countries and learned that 6 of the leading 10 causes of preventable death in America were directly related to diet. They estimated that 25% of death from virtually all disease was preventable through better nutrition alone. One of the primary reasons given for these disheartening estimates was, that 60% of the American diet was comprised of fat and sugar. The status of American nutrition has been de-evolving now for some time. Author of the landmark Bogaloosa Heart Study in the 1980’s, Dr. Gerald Baronson was quoted as saying: “If the present diet of our children doesn’t radically change, they will come to be known as the first generation of Americans not expected to live as long as their parents.” Today we know that Dr. Baronson’s prognostication is sadly coming true right before our eyes. In the 6-11 age group obesity has more than doubled in the last 20 years in the 11-19 age group obesity has more than tripled in that time. The Key Problems High fat and sugar consumption continue to plague the health of the American family. A recent survey showed that 56% of Americans eat at least 1 meal per day away from home. This one meal accounts for 25% of the total fat and sugar consumed in the present American diet. Among those aged 11-19, fast food consumption has increased by 166% over the past 20 years. Of the $940 million spent by the USDA on food for the nation’s school lunch program only ¼ is spent on fruits

and vegetables, mostly canned and frozen. Meanwhile, nearly 75% of all schools in America fail to meet the USDA’s dietary fat limit of 30%. Simple sugars (sucrose, fructose, and glucose), and processed white flour starches convert to artery clogging fats increasing the risks of heart disease. In addition, they increase the overall rate of inflammation produced in the body, inflammation that triggers a number of diseases. There are a number of very dangerous, bad fats still finding their way into the American diet. Saturated, hydrogenated and trans fats commonly found in children’s candy, crackers, cookies and snacks continue to pose the greatest cardiovascular and cancer risks, and also contribute to the chronic inflammation that lies at the root of many diseases. Self-induced inflammatory disease represents more than 80% of all the disease Americans suffer from. Beyond the obvious Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus, Heart disease and Cancer are also inflammatory diseases. All inflammatory disease is caused by eicosanoids (super hormones), produced by a fatty acid called arachadonic acid, obtained from: egg yolks, red meat, peanuts, dairy and processed sugars. Anti-inflammatory hormones are produced by a fatty acid called alpha linolenic acid obtained from: fatty fish, flax seeds, non-fermented soy products, walnuts and pumpkin seeds. High consumption of fermented foods such as: yeasted foods, vinegars and marinades along with mold and fungal foods such as: peanuts, pistachio nuts and bleu cheese, increase the risks of single cell bacterial proliferation and infection. Moreover, according to two-time Nobel Prize Winner Dr. Otto Warburg, the primary cause of cancer is the fermentation of sugar.

Craniosacral Therapy Helps To Identify the Source of Your Pain

Back pain is one of the most common problems people have today. About 60-80% of the adult U.S. population has lower back pain. It is the leading cause of visits to the doctor, hospitalization, work disability, and surgery.

It is important to identify the root cause of the problem. You need more than just symptom relief. If only the symptoms of your pain are addressed, your therapy will be less effective and you may experience further dysfunction in other parts of your body and just feel temporary relief.

Traditional healthcare has not been an effective form of therapy for chronic back pain and this is seen in the increasing number of people seeking alternative therapies. The standard medical treatments consist of medication and surgery. Dealing with Food Addictions

Those of us who have grown up on a contemporary Western diet have food addictions galore. I know I do. Fortunately, my three-year-old daughter does not. She

has never eaten foods like refined flours and sugars, highly processed foods, meats, or dairy, all of which create negative addictions. We are helping our daughter create a very healthy and positive relationship with food. But most of us were brought up with a lessthan-optimal diet and a relationship to foods that includes an emotional attachment to eating them. We often have deep-seated and mostly unconscious feelings of giving ourselves a treat when we choose to eat many foods that we now know are far from optimal.

But for the vast majority of us, we must begin by recognizing that we ourselves are food addicts — and not getting down on ourselves because of it! It simply is what it is, and now it is up to us to decide what to do about it. Many people who learn about the incredible benefits of raw and living foods try to use willpower to overcome their food addictions. While this will work for a while, usually willpower alone doesn’t work in the long run. Instead, it’s best to take the opportunity to become aware of our beliefs and attitudes about food, educate ourselves, and be loving and gentle with ourselves as we evolve toward a healthier relationship with food. I will give you an example. There have been times I have really felt like having a piece of traditional baked pizza. This is not terribly surprising considering the fact that I grew up in an Italian American family, that my dad makes an incredible pizza, and that he also taught me how to make one at a young age. Consequently I have had an emotional attachment to pizza. So how do I handle the hankering? When I first feel the desire for a slice, I usually think back to when I was giving up smoking many years ago. The trick was not to ask myself “Do I want to smoke a cigarette?” but to ask “Do I want to live life as a smoker?” A single cigarette is not going to significantly harm me. However, living life as a smoker would seriously compromise my health, as well as having many other negative effects on my

So this thought often helps me get past the pizza hankering. However, sometimes the hankering comes back — again and again. What to do? Use willpower to suppress my desire for pizza? If a desire for a specific food comes up repeatedly, I will go out and eat a small portion of that food. However, I will do it consciously. I will tune in to how my body feels before I eat the pizza and then focus on how the pizza smells, looks, and tastes. I will also be conscious of

how I feel five minutes after I eat it, and thirty minutes, and an hour later. Usually what happens is that the first bite is okay but mildly unsatisfying. The second bite is really not a treat at all, and I realize that what I am eating tastes a bit like cardboard (keep in mind that when you eat a raw-food diet for any length of time, your taste buds change and cooked foods don’t taste the same anymore). Then after five minutes I feel a heaviness in my stomach. After half an hour, I feel lethargic and already wish I hadn’t eaten the pizza.

Information, Inspiration and Expiration

Most medical school applications of today state

that the candidate for admission is interested in and fascinated by the human body. The problem is that people come with the body and are not treated properly and disturb physicians who have been given medical information but not a medical education. An education teaches you how to deal with and care for the human experience of illness and not just treat the diagnosis. A medical education would also teach the skill of communication so that we do not kill with our words, but heal with them just as we heal with a scalpel and do not wound with it, since individuals are not statistics. One of our sons showed me how wordswordswords become swordswordswords when not used properly. What I have found is that information does not change people. The obese, alcoholics, smokers and nonconforming patients all know their behavior is not good for them. So why do they do it? It gets back to a lack of messages from parents, teachers, clergy and other authority figures of love for the individual. Ugly ducklings rarely find out on their own that they are swans. In one study a loved child had one fourth the illness rate of an unloved child by middle age. I see pet owners with cats and dogs who have lung cancer or asthma to smoke outdoors and save their beloved pets. killing yourself is not questioned. Nine hundred years ago Maimonides stated, “People would suffer fewer illnesses if they took as good care of themselves as they do their animals.” Times haven’t changed. I have found that approximately 20% of patients are what I call respants. Responsible participants who display and are interested in learning survival behavior. What I do for the other 80% is love them and give them return appointments no matter what they do. With

time and my love some begin to realize they are worth loving and caring for and begin to care for and about themselves. In a sense they realize they are swans too and divine children. Then the information I present to them is utilized to achieve better health and survival statistics. As I said I can’t sell them the idea of being a respant or site better statistics because they aren’t interested in working at living. They have grown up hearing there is something wrong with them. So guilt shame and blame are what they are dealing with and if you ask them to fight for their lives it is one more thing they won’t get right. Sad but true. I often ask people to answer questions, join support groups and draw pictures of themselves and their treatment and disease. That eliminates many patients because they are not artists, could do it wrong or don’t want to work at surviving. If I can inspire them and breath life into them then changes will occur. Now they are waking up to life and what makes them happy. This is not about self interest but paying attention to their bodies and what feels good for them to do. Monday morning we have more heart attacks, suicides and illnesses and it is because of how we feel about our meaningless lives and work we don’t want to do. I help people reclaim their lives and be reborn so every cell in their body is given a message about the joys of life each day. Have I seen people expected to die in months cured of their disease by living this way? Yes. Do I recommend it as the sole treatment? No, because I know how hard it is to ‘live in your heart and have magic happen’ and ‘leave all your troubles to God.’ I do, however, point out the benefits of love to the individual and those they are in contact with. When people are unwilling to do this I let their families know that they need to take care of themselves too. Why? Because there

is something called Siegel’s sign in physical diagnosis. When a family walks into your office and everyone looks sick except one person you can be sure the one who looks well is the one with the illness and is using it to manipulate everyone else in the family. I always guarantee them a cure on their next visit. They never come back to that office again and always arrange future meetings in the ER or other safe places where a cure is not available. What do respants do that represents survival behavior? They take action, seek wisdom, perform meditation and imagery and have spiritual support. Spiritual support may come from a religion but some religions have regulations that create guilt and lead to feelings that one deserves God’s punishment. Disease is no different than when one loses one’s car keys. You don’t say God wants me to walk home; you look for your keys. When you are ill you have lost your health and respants look for it to be restored. They live a life with meaning, express their feelings and appropriate anger, ask for help when it is needed, learn to say no to things they do not want to do, make their own decisions about treatment, bring play into their lives, deal with feelings of depression and learn from them and do not live a role but an authentic life. In essence life becomes a labor pain in which we birth ourselves and because we are making the choices the delivery has less pain, complications and side effects. About twenty years ago I met Susan Duffy who had developed scleroderma and was not given much time to live. She was an enraged lady over her illness and her difficult life. Her parents and sister were alcoholics who committed suicide and were angry at her for not doing so. When I met her all I could do was listen and it turned out to be what Helen Keller advises since ‘deafness is darker by far then blindness.’ When she emptied out her rage in 1987 she wrote me a letter telling me that she had let love into her prison and it had touched every negative item in it and transformed them into something meaningful. She is alive today and a member of our support group and one of

my teachers. I will present her list for survivors at the end of this article. Eight years ago my phone rings and someone asks me for Jack Kevorkian’s home number. I learn why Becky wants to die and tell her she is a child of God and to send me some drawings. I don’t tell people don’t smoke or commit suicide I say I love you and God Loves you and why hurt a child of God. Becky and I have worked on her pain and she is alive today and I am her CD or Chosen Dad. What is my role? To keep loving her no matter what she does. I don’t have to like her behavior while I continue to love her. That is very different then telling her there is something wrong with her versus her actions. Becky has helped me with others who are considering suicide and it is something the medical students of today need to realize. When I ask medical students to draw themselves as doctors the majority of the drawings are totally depersonalizing. Some show no human beings only computers, instruments, diplomas and books. One drawing I have shows a kneeling young man handing the patient a tissue and that is what Becky said. When someone responds to her needs she is given the will to live and it may simply be a tissue. I do not criticize people for their choices but try and help them find what is right for them. In doing so I help them find new options and paths to healing their lives and hopefully their illnesses as well. Death is not a failure and is inevitable. I remind people to not try and avoid death but to enjoy life. If you try and avoid death you end up very angry when you find out life has a 100% mortality rate but when you enjoy life the bonus is a longer healthier one. We each need to find our path and way to healing. The messages are age old and can be found in the literature of great spiritual leaders, the US Marines training manual, the writings of children with cancer and others. Two things are key elements. One is the inspiration I discusses and the other is one’s behavior. Just as multiple personalities disassociate so one must disassociate with the old self and behave as if you were the person you want to be. You rehearse and practice and find the coaches to help guide you. That is the role I see myself in

today. A coach for the inspired respant who wants to learn survival behavior. How will you know one when you meet them? Ask them these questions: I am taking you to dinner what do you want? How would you introduce yourself to God? What should I hang in the lobby of public buildings with a sign above it that says, come and see how beautiful and meaningful life is? The correct answers are: The response should

be within 5-10 seconds demonstrating they are in touch with their feelings and not thinking about fat content, cost, or what you want. The introduction is that you and God don’t need an introduction you are one or a child of God and last you hang up not a picture of a baby, rainbow or flower but a mirror. Now let me close with a list from Susan for survivors.

Trust in your own instincts, intuitions and leadings. 4. Learn to flow with your own ideas concerning searching and seeking answers. 5. Choose to have faith in yourself and your place in life. 6. Discipline yourself to love the positive more than the negative. 7. Let go of everything that you can’t change. 8. Change yourself through self-acceptance and love then what happens around you won’t matter. 9. Learn to forgive the unforgivable and you will become free. 10. Forgive God, others and yourself. 11. Allow yourself to feel anger, pain, joy and sadness. 12. Express your feelings and don’t feel so alone. 13. Everything changes. 14. Look to other people for guidance and inspiration but not answers. 15. Other people don’t have all the answers they are learning too. 16. Nothing so bad ever happened to you that didn’t happen to someone else. 17. No one is unique we all suffer the same joys and pains of life. 18. Our problems may come in different shapes and sizes but the solutions are the same. 19. Embrace life it will hug you back. 20. Don’t have a need to control. 21. Allow the order of things to take place. God knows what He is doing. 22. Enjoy the peace knowing someone bigger and stronger is in charge. 23. Don’t make too many schedules you will go crazy. 24. 25. Have faith and trust in the things you don’t understand. Life will become easier. 26. Nothing ever happens to you that is not for your good in the bigness of things. 27. Deal with grief, pain and loss when they happen and you won’t have to relive them. 28. Don’t make too many plans for the future life may step in. 29. Love is the greatest healer there is. 30. The less you need someone the more you can love them. 31. Rest when you need to no one else can do it for you. 32. Never stop learning you will become bored. 33. Behind every cloud of adversity is a silver lining. Have the courage and faith to find it. 34. Good and bad events are the pieces of the puzzle that make life complete. 35. God heals. Doctors get paid for it. 36. Letting go of those we love is the greatest gift of love we can give them. 37. Live each day as if it were your last. You will have a lot of great days. 38. Don’t live a life of confusion you will get lost. 39. Love unconditionally those unable to love back and you will be set free. 40. Pray, meditate, sit quietly, take walks. 41. Look up to something bigger than you are, life, love, God. 42. Allow yourself to make mistakes. Then move on life is too short. 43. Live a life of prayer and you can get through anything. 44. Learn to laugh at yourself and you will make friends with yourself. 45. Know you are a child of God. 46. God loves you even when you think no one else does. 47. Be your own person in all things. 48. When you know yourself other people will know you too. 49. Learn to accept criticism, advice and suggestions. They can help you. 50. Be humble when you receive praise. 51. Don’t get stuck following one religion, group or person move forward. 52. Life holds the wisdom, answers and solutions that any person could ever need their life. 53. Have the courage to explore. 54. Open to life. Feel it, experience it, live it and you will learn to fly (transcend). In conclusion let me say live in the moment as children and animals do. To put it in the words of one of my patients, ‘I want to be dying forever.’ If we live with a sense of time we learn how to spend it and that it is everything and ultimately what is immortal is not our bodies but our love. 51 Healthy Living Magazine Online Issue November 2011


November Recipe: Autumn Barley Soup Our Autumn Barley Soup utilizes some of our favorite fall vegetables! Fall is a time of harvest, of eating root vegetables and hearty grains to warm ourselves from the inside-out and store some energy for the coming winter. Furthermore, the digestive system is nourished by warmth, and this feel-good soup provides us all with the inner warmth we always deserve. It is also super easy, and combines many of the autumn superfoods! 1/2 onion, chopped 1 leek, sliced 4 carrots, grated or chopped 2 celery stalks, chopped 2 parsnips, diced 2 sweet potatoes or yams, chopped 1-2 c. butternut squash, cubed 1 Tablespoon olive oil 1 quart water

1.5 quarts chicken or vegetable broth 1 c. barley 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated or chopped 1 teaspoon sea salt or 1 Tablespoon miso Dash of oregano, rosemary, and/or thyme to taste Parsley to garnish

Saute onion, carrots, ginger, and parsnips in large soup pot in oil over low heat. Add all other ingredients, except parsley and salt/miso. Simmer 90 minutes. Add salt or miso and simmer an additional 15 minutes. Garnish with parsley. Serve piping hot! For extra nourishment, try adding in small cubes of lean beef, pre-cooked ham, or chopped spinach.

Prep Time: 30 Minutes Cook Time: 90 Minutes Serves: 6-8 People

Soup

Ingredients: 1 small can of white kidney beans 1 small can of dark red kidney beans 1 clove of garlic 2 Tblsp. olive oil 1 medium onion, diced 1 large leek, sliced thin 1 small green pepper, diced 2 celery sticks, sliced thin 2 carrots, sliced thin 1 large potato (with skin,) diced 1 cup fresh green beans, cut to 1 in. pieces (or frozen beans) 5 cups of water 3 Tblsp. fresh parsley (with stems,) chopped 1 tsp. fresh oregano leaves, chopped (or 1/2 tsp dried) 1 large zucchini (with skin,) diced 4 plum tomatoes, seeded and chopped 1 cup frozen peas 2 cups fresh spinach leaves salt and fresh ground pepper to taste In a large soup pot heat olive oil and add onions, leeks, pepper and chopped garlic clove. Simmer for 5 minutes, or until tender. Add celery and carrots and let simmer for 10 minutes. Add potatoes, green beans, water, parsley and oregano. Partially cover and simmer for another 10 minutes. Next, add zucchini, tomatoes, peas and the canned beans, with liquid. Also, add your salt and pepper at this time (I use 1/2 tsp of sea salt and 1/2 tsp of pepper) and let simmer for 30 minutes. Finally, add the spinach and simmer for another 5 minutes and your soup is done!
