Gracias a la estrecha colaboración con estos expertos, a sus opiniones, sugerencias y decidido impulso, ha sido posible diseñar esta publicación, que ahora más que nunca está al servicio de promocionar y hacer grande el nombre que luce su cabecera, además, por supuesto, de dar a conocer en profundidad a los buenos aficionados una de las mejores zonas del mundo para jugar golf. Bajo el título de ‘Coloquio sobre el golf en la zona de Sotogrande’, algunos de los directores de clubes y campos de golf de la zona se reunieron en el Hotel Almenara, el pasado 24 de abril, con el objetivo de analizar la situación actual y

el futuro de este deporte a través de la propia voz de sus gestores. A la cita asistieron el director del Club de Golf La Duquesa, Andrés Moncayo; el director de San Roque Club, Guillermo Navarro; el director de La Cañada, Alberto Andrades; el director de Almenara, Ángel Durán; la directora de La Reserva, Covadonga Basagoiti; la responsable de la Academia de Golf Sotogrande, Irene Lara; y el director general de Almenara, Jordi Caralt. Los máximos responsables del golf en la zona dejaron claro que la situación económica no es la mejor en estos momentos. Como señaló Andrés Moncayo, director de La Duquesa, “no

es dramática, pero sí preocupante. Hay mucha competencia, así que tenemos que hacer hincapié tanto en el tema de servicios como en el de los precios, que lo hemos bajado; es la única forma de relanzar el mercado. Nosotros, a pesar de tener un resort impresionante tenemos solamente el 50% de los green fees ocupados; hay que ponerse las pilas”, añadía Moncayo. De igual forma opinaba Guillermo Navarro, de San Roque Club: “Nosotros hemos tenido también una bajada de green fees, pero no hemos bajado los precios. No obstante, la ocupación es relativa porque, por ejemplo, mis visitantes son casi todos extranjeros, que

Alberto Andrades: “los datos del primer trimestre son similares al 2007” apenas tienen costumbre de jugar por las tardes”. Y añadía: “Hemos tenido un inicio de año bajo, pero a partir de abril estamos mejor que el año pasado. En mi caso tenemos la particularidad de que el campo Old Course, que es el más caro, siempre está lleno por los socios y porque sólo tenemos dos horas de green fees al día; en cambio, en el New Course sí notamos una bajada, sobre todo del mercado nacional”. La situación en el Club de
Golf La Cañada es totalmente distinta por su idiosincrasia de campo municipal. Su director, Alberto Andrades, señaló que “a pesar de haber subido el green fee de 50 a 58 euros, los datos del primer trimestre son prácticamente similares al año 2007, aunque en abril hemos sufrido una pequeña disminución”. Andrades especificó que el 30% del presupuesto del club lo cubren los socios y el resto del 70% los green fees, torneos y patrocinadores. La privilegiada situación de La Cañada está basada en que tiene lleno el campo casi a

diario, con más de doscientas personas en lista de espera para ingresar en el listado de socios. El director de golf de Almenara, Ángel Durán, radiografió la situación de una forma similar a sus colegas: “Nosotros, al igual que La Duquesa, también estamos ligeramente por debajo del año pasado, a pesar de haber bajado los precios. Para revertir esta situación hemos realizado un lanzamiento de abonos anuales a 1.800 euros que creemos va a tener gran éxito”, añadió

Durán. La idea de un abono anual fue muy alabada por todos. Es “fenomenal”, dijo Guillermo Navarro, mientras que Andrés Moncayo lo ratificó, apuntando que en La Duquesa ya se realizaba desde hacía cinco años. Por su parte, Covadonga Basagoiti, directora de La Reserva, explicó que su campo solamente tiene dos horas de green fees al día, por lo que estos ingresos no son fundamentales, al tener una gran cuota de socios. “No estoy disgustada con la marcha de la temporada, pues aunque hubo un descenso en enero, en marzo hemos estado hasta arriba y en abril también. Para mayo esperamos un 70% y para el resto del verano también tenemos buenas perspectivas, así que estoy contenta con los números, pero con cierta preocupación respecto a 2009, porque dicen que puede ir a peor”.
Asociación de campos A raíz de este análisis inicial de la situación de los campos de golf, Andrés Moncayo incidió en la idea de unidad para afrontar mejor el futuro de toda la zona. “Debemos comprometernos todos a hacer una especie de paquete conjunto, una oferta global para poder hacer frente mejor a la competencia y captar más clientes”. La idea la apoyó decisivamente Guillermo Navarro, que anunció que ya se había estado gestando entre varios clubes de la zona en reuniones anteriores: “En Granada, que es de donde yo vengo, creamos la Asociación de Campos hace unos años con unos resultados bastante buenos, con bonus conjuntos, patrocinios institucionales, torneos cuadrangulares y paquetes conjuntos

para que los jugadores pudieran jugar un día en cada campo”. Jordi Caralt, director general de Almenara, también aplaudió la idea de “estar unidos todos los campos, y no entiendo quien se puede ausentar de esta asociación”. Caralt lanzó la idea de trabajar en una imagen conjunta como ‘Destino turístico’. En este sentido, todos los presentes se mostraron favorables de que una posible futura asociación no debería realizarse en función de límites municipales o provinciales, sino por la cercanía y similitud de intereses de los campos del entorno de Sotogrande, lo que englobaría a los actuales nueve de San Roque, los tres de la Costa del Sol Occidental más cercanos (Finca Cortesín, La Duquesa y Doña Julia), y el proyecto

Los presentes en el coloquio expresaron su deseo de contar con todos los campos de la zona de un segundo campo de Valderrama en el municipio de Castellar. Además de los paquetes conjuntos tanto de juego como de hostelería o restauración, los representantes de los campos de Sotogrande barajaron, entre otras, la posibilidad de derivar el exceso de demanda de La Cañada hacia otros campos y también la celebración de torneos conjuntos. Los presentes en el coloquio expresaron su deseo de contar para estas iniciativas
con todos los campos y especialmente con Valderrama y Real de Sotogrande, grandes estandartes de la zona de cara a una promoción en el extranjero. “Tenemos el gran privilegio de estar en un enclave de prestigio mundial, con doce campos de golf y todos de un gran nivel. El jugador que viene aquí nunca se va insatisfecho, juegue en el campo que juegue y eso lo tenemos que aprovechar”, señaló Guillermo Navarro. En resumen, los ponentes del foro afirmaron que hasta el momento el año 2008 podía calificarse de
aprobado a nivel económico, aunque con reservas para los próximos meses, pero que se estaba logrando mantener una situación aceptable. No obstante, todos se mostraron de acuerdo en que es necesario un revulsivo, como bien pudiera ser la creación de una Asociación de Campos. Nuevo concepto de ‘Sotogrande Golf Magazine’ La convocatoria sirvió también para que Grupo HCP presentara ante los máximos gestores de los campos del entorno de Sotogrande el boceto de este tercer número de la revista ‘Sotogrande Golf Magazine’, que tras sus dos primeros números en 2007 vuelve a salir en 2008 con un concepto renovado y dirigida específicamente al enclave Sotogrande, a sus campos y a los aficionados interesados en jugarlos. ‘Sotogrande Golf Magazine’ quiere ser la publicación que ofrezca, cada dos meses, toda la actualidad, novedades y actividades de los doce campos de golf del entorno de Sotogrande para convertirse, junto con el resto de publicaciones del Grupo HCP, en un instrumento mediático de promoción de la zona y de la actividad del golf en particular. Este nuevo enfoque de ‘Sotogrande Golf Magazine’ fue muy bien recibido por los directores de los campos presentes, que mostraron su apoyo a una iniciativa que está en esa misma línea de crear una imagen conjunta del enclave Sotogrande Golf. Como colofón de la reunión, se sentaron las bases para celebrar, el próximo mes de julio, un gran torneo cuadrangular con motivo del décimo aniversario de El Periódico de Sotogrande, en el cual los participantes jugarán consecutivamente en los campos de Almenara, San Roque Club, La Duquesa, Alcaidesa y La Reserva. ■

There_was_no_better_way_ to_launch_the_new_format_ of_the_‘Sotogrande_Golf_ Magazine’, Issue_3_of_ which_you_are_holding_ in_your_hands, than_to_ hold_a_discussion_with_ the_managers_of_the_ golf_courses_which_give_ their_characteristic_ personality_to_the_ enclave_of_Sotogrande._ Thanks to close cooperation with these experts, to their opinions, suggestions and wholehearted support, it has been possible to design this publication, which now more than ever is at the service of promoting and making great the name sported by its masthead and, naturally, to provide in-depth information to keen fans on one of the best areas in the world for playing golf.
The top managers in golf in the area made it clear that the current economic situation is not ideal. As Andrés Moncayo, manager of La Duquesa, indicated, “it’s not drastic, but it is worrying. There is a lot of competition, so we have to put special emphasis both on services and prices, which we have lowered; this is the only way to relaunch the market.

The unique feature of our club is that the Old Course, which is the most expensive, is always full of members, and we now have just two green fees per day; on the New Course, however, we have noticed a slump, particularly in the Spanish market”. The situation of Club de Golf La Cañada is completely different due to its nature as a municipal course. Its manager, Alberto Andrades, said that “despite having raised the green fee from 50 to 58 euros, the figures for the first quarter are virtually the same as 2007, although in April there was a slight drop”. Andrades explained that 30% of the club’s budget is covered by members and the remaining 70% is covered by green fees, tournaments and sponsors. La Cañada’s privileged situation is based on the fact that the course is full almost every day, with over 200 people on the waiting list to become members. The Almenara director of golf, Ángel Durán, made a similar analysis of the situation to his colleagues’: “Like La Duquesa, we are also slightly worse off than last year, despite having lowered the prices. Course association Following this initial analysis of the situation of the golf courses, Andrés Moncayo stressed the importance of unity in order to face up to the future of the entire area. “We must all make a commitment to creating a kind of joint package, a comprehensive offering in order to do better against the competition and win more customers”. The idea was wholeheartedly supported by Guillermo Navarro, who announced that the idea had already been taking shape among several of the area’s clubs in previous meetings: “In Granada, which is where I have come from, we created the Course Association a few years ago and had pretty good results, with joint vouchers, institutional sponsors, quadrangular tournaments and joint packages so that golfers can play for a day on each course”. Jordi Caralt, general manager of Almenara, also applauded the idea “of all of the courses being united, and I don’t understand anyone
Everyone present agreed that a possible future association should not be formed within municipal or provincial boundaries, but on the basis of the proximity and similarity of interests of the courses of the Sotogrande area, which would include San Roque’s current nine courses, the three closest western Costa del Sol courses (Finca Cortesín, La Duquesa and Doña Julia), and the project for the second Valderrama course in the municipality of Castellar. In addition to the joint packages for play, accommodation and restaurant services, the representatives of the Sotogrande courses considered, among other possibilities, the idea of directing La Cañada’s excess demand to other courses, and also holding joint tournaments. Those present in the discussion expressed their desire to involve all of the area’s golf courses in these initiatives, especially Valderrama and Real de Sotogrande, the flagships of the area in its promotion overseas. “We have the great privilege of being in an enclave of worldwide prestige, with 12 golf courses, all of a high standard. Players never go away unsatisfied, whichever course they play on, and we have to take advantage of this”, indicated Guillermo Navarro. In short, the speakers in the forum asserted that, to date, the year 2008 could be described as passable in economic terms. Although they have reservations for forthcoming months, they are managing to maintain an acceptable situation. Nevertheless, everyone agreed that a catalyst is needed, which could well come in the form of the creation of a Course Association. The new ‘Sotogrande Golf Magazine’ concept The meeting also gave Grupo HCP the chance to present to the top managers of

the Sotogrande area’s golf courses the draft for this third edition of the ‘Sotogrande Golf Magazine’, which following its first two issues in 2007 has come out in 2008 with a new concept, aimed specifically at the Sotogrande enclave, its courses, and to the enthusiasts interested in playing on them. The aim of ‘Sotogrande Golf Magazine’ is be the publication that offers, every two months, all of the current affairs, innovations and activities of the 12 golf courses of the Sotogrande area, to become, alongside the rest of Grupo HCP’s publications, a media instrument that promotes the area and the activity of golf in particular. Sotogrande Golf Magazine’s new approach was well received by the managers of the courses present in the meeting, who expressed their support for an initiative which has the same aim of creating a joint image of the Sotogrande Golf enclave. To round off the meeting, the foundations were laid for holding a big quadrangular tournament in July to mark the occasion of the 10th anniversary of El Periódico de Sotogrande, in which the participants will play consecutively on the Almenara, San Roque Club, La Duquesa, Alcaidesa and La Reserva courses. ■

The team European amateur players achieved a convincing victory against AsiaPacific (20-12) in the Michael Bonallack Trophy held from April 25 to 27 at Club de Golf Valderrama in Sotogrande. The excellent course owned by the Ortiz Pariño family once again impressed all of its visitors with its immaculate condition, perfect in every nook and cranny. The Europe team, captained by the Spaniard Gonzaga Escauriaza, was made up of the Swedes Bjorn Akesson and Joel Sjoholm; the Scotsman Wallace Booth; the German Sean Einhaus; the Welshman Nigel Edwards; the Frenchmen Benjamin Hebert and Alexandre Kaleka; the Irishman Shane Lowry; the Scotsman Callum Macaulay; the

Englishmen Chris Wood and Daniel Willett; and the Spaniard Pedro Oriol. The European team dominated from the start of the competition and went away at the end of the first day leading by 6-4. On the second day they extended their lead to 13.5-6.5, and on the third and last day they rounded off the tournament with a convincing final by 20-12. The Scotsman Wallace Booth and the Englishman Daniel Willet led the European team with magnificent rounds on the Valderrama course, particularly the Englishman, under the watchful eye of Jaime Ortiz Patiño. The Spaniard Pedro Oriol achieved two points for the European team on the first day. ■

El Real Club de Golf Sotogrande volvió a vestirse de gala para acoger durante los días 2 al 5 de abril una nueva edición del Campeonato de Europa de Naciones por equipos e individual, Copa Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. Bajo un cielo azul y una temperatura bastante agradable, cerca de 170 jugadores de 21 países se lanzaron a por la gloria de los títulos en juego sobre el magnífico tapete verde del pionero campo de Sotogrande. Y el Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande le trajo suerte al equipo femenino español que superó la segunda plaza de la edición anterior y consiguió proclamarse campeón. Carlota Ciganda, Adriana Zwanck y Ane Urchegui fueron las tres componentes del equipo español que lograron de forma avasalladora el título, puesto que le sacaron diecisiete golpes de ventaja a su inmediato adversario, Gales. Ni el fuerte viento de Levante que sopló los primeros días ni las maratonianas jornadas de más de cinco horas, incluido el Pro-am, pudo frenar al equipo español, bastante adaptado a los campos de Sotogrande. Ciganda y Zwanck fueron semifinalista y finalista, respectivamente, en la última Copa de la Reina, disputada apenas un mes antes en La Reserva, otro excelente campo de Sotogrande. Carlota Ciganda, vencedora este año ya del Internacional de Portugal y recientemente galardonada con la Medalla Olímpica del
COI, se encontró desde el primer día como en su casa y desde el primer hoyo comenzó a marcar diferencias. Lideró la competición individual día tras día y supo aguantar la presión de la sueca Caroline Hedwall, que llegó a estar igualada con la navarra al inicio de la última jornada, y ganar con autoridad el campeonato y hacer el doblete. Junto a Ciganda también brillaron tanto en el campo como fuera de competición por sus permanentes sonrisas la madrileña Adriana Zwanck, que acabó en cuarta posición, y la madrileña Ane Urchegui, que fue sexta. El equipo español copó el Top Ten. Triunfo de Escocia y Lowry Por equipos masculinos, Escocia se proclamó campeón; seguido de Irlanda y Suecia. El equipo español luchó hasta el último día por intentar meterse entre los tres primeros al menos, pero al final cayó hasta la sexta posición. El campeón individual masculino fue el irlandés Shane Lowry, seguido por el francés Benjamín Hebert. El mejor español fue el sevillano Moisés Cobo, que terminó tercero. En el equipo español le siguió Jordi García Pinto, que acabó en el puesto 28; Borja Etchart González, en el puesto 36; y Pedro Oriol, en el puesto 47. ■

From April 2 to 5 Real Club de Golf Sotogrande turned out in its finest to host this year’s European Nations Championships for teams and individuals, the Copa Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. Under a blue sky and a fairly agreeable temperature, around 170 players from 21 countries went in the search for glory on the magnificent green carpet of Sotogrande’s pioneer course.
Carlota Ciganda from Navarre achieves double: team and individual champion Real Club de Golf de Sotogrande brought good fortune to the Spanish women’s team, which went one better than its second place in the last competition and secured victory. Carlota Ciganda, Adriana Zwanck and Ane Urchegu were the three members of the Spanish team which achieved the title overwhelmingly, with a 17-stroke lead over closest rivals Wales. Not even the strong east wind blowing on the opening days, nor the marathon rounds of five hours,
including the Pro-Am, could prevent a Spanish team which is fairly accustomed to the Sotogrande courses. Ciganda and Zwanck were semi-finalist and finalist respectively in the last Copa de la Reina held just one month earlier at La Reserva, another superb Sotogrande course. Carlota Ciganda, who had already won the Portugal International this year and was awarded the COI Olympic Medal, felt at home from the outset, opening the gap on the first hole. She led the individual competition throughout and was able to take the pressure applied by the Swede Caroline Hedwall, who managed to draw level with the Navarre-born player at the beginning of the last day, authoritatively winning the championship and securing the double. Both on the course and off, due to their permanent smiles, Adriana Zwanck and Ane Urchegui from Madrid, finishing in fourth and sixth place respectively, also shone. The Spanish team all finished in the top ten.

Victory for Scotland and Lowry In the men’s competition Scotland was proclaimed champion, followed by Ireland and Sweden. The Spanish team fought hard through to the last day to at least get among the top three, but in the end they fell to sixth place. The champion in the individual men’s competition was Shane Lowry, followed by the Frenchman Benjamín Hebert. The best Spaniard was Moisés Cobo from Seville, who finished third. In the Spanish team he was followed by Jordi García Pinto who finished 28th, Borja Etchart González, in 36th, and Pedro Oriol, in 47th. ■

La alemana Caroline Masson se adjudicó el título del Campeonato Internacional de España Femenino, Copa S.M. La Reina, tras superar en una espectacular final a la española Adriana Zwanck, a quien batió en el hoyo 17. La golfista germana, habitualmente en las posiciones de privilegio en los torneos de máxima importancia amateur en los últimos años, consiguió así su primer gran triunfo internacional, gracias a desplegar toda su sabiduría golfística ante una rival que nunca se dio por vencida. Caroline Masson ya había dado muestras de su buen estado de forma en las eliminatorias previas, especialmente en las semifinales, cuando barrió literalmente del campo a la francesa Audrey Goumard por un apretado 6-5. La madrileña Adriana Zwanck también realizó un sensacional torneo y presentó sus credenciales al título tras superar a la navarra Carlota Ciganda y a la sueca Carolina Hedwall, dos de las rviales más difíciles del panorama europeo, en las dos rondas eliminatorias celebradas durante la jornada del sábado, aspirando con ello a reeditar el triunfo conseguido en la Copa S. M. La Reina 2003 en El Saler. Caroline Masson tomó la iniciativa desde el primer momento, sometiendo a la es-
pañola a una creciente presión que generó una delicada situación a la conclusión del hoyo 10, cuando la alemana aventajaba a su rival por 3 hoyos. Lejos de doblegarse, Adriana Zwanck reaccionó de manera contundente, aprovechando primero una mala culminación en el green de la germana y dos aciertos propios en los siguientes hoyos para igualar la contienda a la salida del 14. A partir de entonces el toma y daca fue espectacular. Zwanck salvó el par en el 15 tras estar a punto de embocar desde 100 metros, mientras que la alemana replicó en el 16 con un birdie que la volvió a poner en ventaja a falta de sólo 2 hoyos para la conclusión. La golfista española envío la bola al agua en su segundo golpe en el 17, circunstancia decisiva para que Masson se proclamase campeona de la Copa S. M. La Reina 2008. ■

Adriana Zwanck: “La Reserva es una maravilla” La subcampeona de la Copa de La Reina, Adriana Zwanck, hizo un balance muy positivo de su actuación en el torneo: “Ha sido muy emocionante, creo que he jugado muy bien la final, pero Carolina ha estado fenomenal. He empezado perdiendo de tres hoyos, pero he conseguido remontar a partir del 11 y eso me ha hecho sentirme bien, pero mi rival ha acabado muy bien, aunque yo he disfrutado un montón”. Del campo de La Reserva afirmó que es “una maravilla, duro de andar, lo que te hace ver el fondo de cada una al hacerte 36 hoyos. Tiene unos greens muy difíciles y ahí es donde se gana. Es muy interesante y el viento lo hace más divertido de jugar. Tiene muchas posiciones de bandera difíciles”.

German player Caroline Masson won the Spanish International Women’s Championships, the Copa S.M. La Reina, following a spectacular final in which she beat the Spaniard Adriana Zwanck on the 17th hole. The German golfer, who has become accustomed to being at the top in the most important amateur tournaments in recent years, thus achieved her first big international victory, using all of her golfing wisdom against a rival who never gave up. Caroline Masson had already displayed her good form in the qualifying rounds, particularly in the semi-finals when she knocked out her French rival Audrey Goumard by a close 6-5. Adriana Zwanck from Madrid also performed superbly throughout the tournament and made her bid for the title after overcoming Carlota Ciganda from Navarre and the Swede Carolina Hedwall, two of the most difficult rivals on the European scene, in the two heats held on the Saturday, thus aspiring
to repeat her victory in the 2003 Copa S. M. La Reina held at El Saler. Caroline Masson took the initiative from the outset, applying increasing pressure on the Spaniard which led to a delicate situation on the tenth, when the German was ahead of her rival by three holes. Far from bowing down, Adriana Zwanck reacted convincingly, taking advantage of a bad finish on the green from the German and making two putts herself on the following holes to equalise the match at the 14th tee. From that moment on the give-and-take was spectacular. Zwanck saved par on the 15th after coming close to holing from 100 metres out, and the German replied on the 16th with a birdie that put her ahead again just two holes from the finish. The Spanish golfer sent the ball into the water on her second shot on the 17th, a decisive factor leading to Masson’s proclamation as champion of the Copa S. M. La Reina 2008. ■

Adriana Zwanck: “La Reserva is wonderful” The runner-up in the Copa de La Reina, Adriana, Zwanck, gave a positive evaluation of her performance in the tournament: “It was very exciting; I think I played very well in the final, but Carolina was exceptional. I started off losing by three holes, but I started to come back from the 11th and this made me feel good, but by rival finished very well. Nevertheless I thoroughly enjoyed myself. In relation to the La Reserva course she declared that it “is wonderful; it’s hard going in terms of walking, so you find out how fit the players are over the 36 holes. It has some very difficult greens and that’s where you win the match. It’s very interesting and the wind makes it more fun to play. It has many difficult pin positions”.

La Cañada: Victoria de Josefa Gil en el primer torneo de Santa Bárbara El club de golf La Cañada acogió el sábado 1 de marzo el primer torneo de la temporada 2008 organizado por las damas del club linense Santa Bárbara, en el que tomaron parte 32 señoras, entre ellas dos invitadas del club Río Real de Marbella. Las ganadoras del Torneo, dividido en primera y segunda categoría, fueron, respectivamente, Josefa Gil (37 puntos) y Heidi Keinath (40 puntos), ambas del club de golf La Cañada.
La Cañada: Victory for Josefa Gil in the first Santa Bárbara tournament On March 1 La Cañada golf club hosted the first tournament of the 2008 season organised by the women of La Línea club Santa Bárbara, involving 32 ladies who included two guests from Marbella club Río Real. The winners of the tournament, which was divided into two categories, were Josefa Gil (37 points) in the first and Heidi Keinath (40 points) in the second, both of La Cañada golf club.

Organizada por el Colegio Oficial de Licenciados en Educación Física y en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte y el Patronato Municipal de Deportes y Turismo de San Roque, este año la jornada versó sobre ‘Modelo ideal de centro deportivo’, y se centró concretamente en el Decreto 183/2006 de la Junta de Andalucía sobre Acreditación de Centros Deportivos. En la presentación estuvieron presentes el teniente de alcalde delegado de Deportes, Juan José Guillén, el presidente del Colegio de Licenciados en Educación Física (COLEF) de Andalucía, Ignacio Manzano, y directivos del Club de Golf La Cañada.
Professionals visit La Cañada On Saturday March 8 La Cañada Municipal Golf Course hosted the 4th Sports Science Professionals Conference (sports doctors, coaches, managers...). Organised by the Association of Graduates in Physical Education and Physical Activity Sciences and Sport, alongside the San Roque Municipal Sports and Tourism Trust, this year the conference was entitled the ‘Ideal sports centre model’, focussing on the Andalusian Regional Government’s Decree 183/2006 on Sports Centre Accreditation. The presentation was attended by the deputy mayor and sports official, Juan José Guillén, the chairman of the Association of Graduates in Physical Education (Spanish initials COLEF) for Andalusia, Ignacio Manzano, and management staff of Club de Golf La Cañada.
San Roque Club: Cuarenta jugadores en el torneo El Corte Inglés Con una participación de 40 jugadores, el domingo 2 de marzo se celebró en el campo de San Roque Club el Torneo de El Corte Inglés, donde resultaron ganadores Philipp Iliev en caballeros y Marcie Heidemann en damas. Estos dos jugadores consiguieron clasificarse para jugar la final de zona, que se celebrará próximamente en Antequera. Tras los ganadores recibieron premios los segundos clasificados, tal como es habitual en este torneo. En hombres fue Miguel Ángel Muñoz el subcampeón, con los mismos 39 puntos que el líder, mientras que en damas la subcampeona fue Patricia Thiele. San Roque Club: Forty players take part in El Corte Inglés tournament With 40 players taking part, on Sunday March 2 San Roque Club hosted the El Corte Inglés tournament, won by Philipp Iliev in the men’s and Marcie Heidemann in the women’s. The two golfers qualified to play in the area final, to be held soon in Antequera. As is customary in this tournament, the second-placed players also received prizes. In the men’s the runner up was Miguel Ángel Muñoz, level on 39 points with the leader, while in the women’s it was Patricia Thiele. The trophy for best junior went to Adam Sagar, who was fifth overall.

Las jóvenes promesas del golf de Sotogrande demostraron su talento en el Pequecircuito de Andalucía disputado el pasado 8 de marzo en Marbella. En una divertida jornada sobre el campo, pequeños jugadores de la Escuela Infantil del Real Club de Golf Sotogrande lucharon para conseguir los primeros puestos. Pedro Marín, de 6 años, logró ganar en la primera prueba del Pequecircuito disputado en Monte Paraíso; mientras Carlota Sánchez, de 7 años, quedó segunda en Magna Marbella, ambos en categoría Benjamín. Estos torneos están organizados por la Federación Andaluza de Golf. La Escuela Infantil del Real Club de Golf Sotogrande está dirigida por Juan Antonio Marín, quien introduce a sus alumnos en la mejor técnica.
Más de 160 jugadores participaron el pasado 15 de marzo en el IV Torneo El Relingue, celebrado en el Club La Cañada por primera vez. Un récord de participación que consolida un campeonato que se va convirtiendo en un clásico para los aficionados y que surgió como una diversión entre amigos del restaurante, propiedad de José Ramón Gastaldi. El viento racheado de Levante marcó la jornada donde el ganador fue Francisco Torres, socio de La Cañada, que consiguió un total de 37 puntos, seguido de cerca por Antonio Márquez y Sergio Galiano (de Guadalmina y La Cañada respectivamente) que lograron 35 puntos. En cuarta posición quedó David Winckley y quinto Francisco Agüera Moreno. En segunda categoría el ganador fue Francisco Manuel Bonilla, con 40 puntos. Anthony Hiom consiguió 36 y Alfonso Blanco quedó en tercer lugar con 35 puntos. Cuarto fue Cristóbal Holgado Gavira (35) y quinto, Brian Soiza (35).
On March 15 over 160 players took part in the 4th El Relingue Tournament, held for the first time at Club La Cañada. This record number of entries consolidated the championship which has become a classic for amateur players and which started off as a bit of fun among friends of the restaurant, owned by José Ramón Gastaldi. The gusty east wind was the main feature of a day on which the winner was Francisco Torres, a La Cañada member, who scored a total of 37 points, followed close behind by Antonio Márquez and Sergio Galiano (from Guadalmina and La Cañada respectively), scoring 35 points. David Winckley finished fourth and Francisco Agüera Morena came in fifth. In the second category the winner was Francisco Manuel Bonilla, with 40 points. Anthony Hiom scored 36 and Alfonso Blanco finished in third with 35 points. Cristóbal Holgado Gavira (35) was fourth and Brian Soiza (35) was fifth.

Youth players excel in Andalusian ‘Pequecircuito’ Sotogrande’s promising young golfers demonstrated their talent in the Andalusian ‘Pequecircuito’ held on March 8 in Marbella. On a fun day of golf, young players from the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande Youth School fought to be at the top of the leaderboard. Pedro Marín, six years of age, managed to win the first Pequecircuito competition held at Monte Paraíso, while Carlota Sánchez, seven years old, was second at Magna Marbella, both in the Benjamín age group. These tournaments are organised by the Andalusian Golf Federation. The Real Club de Golf Sotogrande Youth School is managed by Juan Antonio Marín, who introduces the pupils to the best technique.
El sábado 29 de marzo se celebró en las instalaciones del Club de Golf Doña Julia el III Torneo de Golf Construcciones Carrillo Dávila, perteneciente al circuito 2008 del Club de Golf Bahía. Participaron más de 100 jugadores amateurs del Campo de Gibraltar, en un día soleado, pero con un desapacible viento. Over a hundred amateur players from Campo de Gibraltar took part on a sunny day albeit with an unpleasant easterly wind. In Category One the winner was José Delgado Jiménez, with 35 points, followed by Manuel Sánchez Gálvez (35). In Category Two the winner was José Luis Cabello Chico, with 39 points, followed by Ramón Casado Buiez (35). In Category Three, Antonio Celis León was the winner with 40 points, and Javier Valdez Guerrero was second (38). The best woman was Rosa Quintana González, with 33 points, the best senior was Manuel Sánchez Gálvez, and the Manta Trophy went to Juan Carlos López Morales.

Una jornada de golf en honor a San Patricio en La Alcaidesa El Club de Golf La Alcaidesa celebró el 15 de marzo el día de San Patricio, patrón de Irlanda, con un torneo de golf, un almuerzo amenizado por el grupo de folk irlandés, Stolen Notes, y una cena fiesta nocturna. El torneo se disputó bajo la modalidad de juego Texas Sacramble, donde todos juegan la bola que eligen tras cada golpe de ahí que el equipo ganador finalizase con 18 bajo par, a pesar del fuerte viento de Poniente. El equipo ganador estuvo formado por John Hunter, Jillian Treep, Hans Reuter y Juan Rodríguez. El premio al Drive más Largo fue para Alfonso Guisado, en el hoyo 18; y para Laura Green, en el hoyo 3. El premio a la Bola más Cercana fue para Christa Reuter.
A day of golf in honour of Saint Patrick at La Alcaidesa On March 15 Club de Golf La Alcaidesa celebrated Saint Patrick’s Day, with a golf tournament in honour of the patron saint of Ireland, a lunch accompanied by music from Irish folk band Stolen Notes, and a dinner party in the evening. The tournament was held under the Texas Scramble competition format, in which the golfers choose the team’s best shot to play from; the winning team therefore finished on 18 under par despite the strong west wind. The winning side was made up of John Hunter, Jillian Treep, Hans Reuter and Juan Rodríguez. The prize for the longest drive went to Alfonso Guisado, on the eighteenth, and to Laura Green, on the third. The prize for the closest ball to the pin went to Christa Reuter.

El primer premio lo consiguió el equipo formado por David Baugh y Christine Baugh, con 47 puntos. En segundo lugar quedó clasificada la pareja formada por Glyn Margrave y Michael Jordan (44); y tercero fue el equipo compuesto por Ian Sherdley, capitán de socios del club, y C.J. Sherdley (43). Los premios entregados a los participantes y ganadores fueron ofrecidos por Ermenegildo Zegna y Asprey, y también se entregó varias cenas en Kamakura, restaurante japonés de San Roque Club. Este torneo se celebra anualmente debido al gran numero de socios irlandeses que pertenecen al club por lo que se ofreció también a los participantes durante el juego cervezas Guinness y canapés en el tee del 10, además de un menú irlandés para almorzar en el restaurante El Bolero del propio club.

The prizes awarded to the participants and winners were donated by Ermenegildo Zegna and Asprey, and several dinners at Kamakura, San Roque Club’s Japanese restaurant, were also given away. This tournament is held annually due to the club’s large number of Irish members, and during play the golfers were offered Guinness and canapés on the tenth tee, in addition to an Irish set menu for lunch in the club’s El Bolero restaurant.

Más de un centenar de seniors de toda Andalucía participaron en esta competición, en la que el club mijeño conseguió un gran número de premios. La clasificación en la categoría de caballeros finalizó con 42 puntos para Jack Perry, seguido de Jeremy Rittener (Guadalhorce) con 37 puntos y Rolf Soderlund (La Cala Golf) con 37 puntos. En segunda categoría de caballeros, el ganador fue el jugador Antonio Ortiz Laina de El Candado con 38 puntos. Steve Hickey gana el torneo Jyske Bank Casi un centenar de personas participaron en San Roque Club el pasado 20 de marzo en el Torneo Jyske Bank, puntuable para el Tour Europeo Italiano. Steve Hickey se convirtió en el ganador de este torneo patrocinado por el banco danés Jyske Bank, que se jugó sobre el Old Course de San Roque Club. En su partida, el vencedor logró 41 puntos, quedando por encima de Phil Williams (38) y Serafín Bustamante
(35) en la categoría masculina de bajo hándicap. En la de alto hándicap venció James McDonald (37), seguido por Danny Benjamín (31) e Ian Sherdley (30). San Roque Club celebró el 6 de abril, bajo un sol espléndido, un Fam Trip en el campo New Course al que asistieron en torno a ochenta personas, entre tour operadores y personal de reservas y recepción de hoteles de entre Sotogrande y Málaga. La cita englobó la realización de un torneo, un concurso de putting green, un clinic para no jugadores ofrecido por el profesional del campo, Santiago Muñoz, un buggy tour, un coctel y almuerzo.
El torneo Celebrity Pro-Am Classics, en pro de organizaciones benéficas como Save the Children, se celebró los días 1, 2 y 3 de abril en los campos Almenara Golf, San Roque Club y Finca Cortesín en Casares. Unos cien jugadores, divididos en equipos, formados por celebridades británicas, artistas de televisión, ex futbolistas, y aficionados realizaron los recorridos a los campos, con salida al tiro y bajo la modalidad stableford. Entre los ex jugadores de fútbol que se dieron cita estaban estrellas de los últimos veinte años como Glenn Hoddle, Vinny Samways, Chris Waddle, Derek Staham, Les O`Neill, Tony Grealish, Colin Gibson, Steve Foster, Billy Rafferty, Kevin Smith, David Speedie, Mak Draper o Des Walker, entre otros. Celebrity Pro-Am Classics held in Sotogrande
The Celebrity Pro-Am Classics tournament, in aid of charity organisations such as Save the Children, was held on April 1, 2 and 3 at Almenara Golf, San Roque Club and Finca Cortesín in Casares. Around a hundred players divided into teams made up of British celebrities, television personalities, former footballers and amateurs completed a round on each course, with a shotgun start and played under the Stableford competition format. The former football players present included stars of the past twenty years such as Glenn Hoddle, Vinny Samways, Chris Waddle, Derek Statham, Les O’Neill, Tony Grealish, Colin Gibson, Steve Foster, Billy Rafferty, Kevin Smith, David Speedie, Mark Draper and Des Walker, among others. Abril Josefa Gil vence el 2º torneo de Santa Bárbara El club linense de golf Santa Bárbara celebró el 12 de abril en el club de golf Doña Julia el segundo torneo puntuable para el ranking 2008 femenino. La jornada fue magnífica de sol con 31 señoras en liza, bajo la modalidad stableford y con dos categorías. Las primeras clasificadas que se llevaron un trofeo y un juego de seis copas serigrafriadas con el logo del club fueron en primera categoría y con 39 puntos Josefa Gil Ruiz; y en segunda, con 40 puntos Cathy Wright.

El Club de Golf La Reserva acogió los días 14 y 15 de abril el Open de España Seniors Doble AES Golf con veintiún parejas en liza, cuarenta y dos jugadores en total, bajo la modalidad de juego greensome medal. La pareja formada por José Ramón Álvarez Redondo y José Benito Román, con 149 golpes (73+76) fue la vencedora absoluta del torneo. Luis Trenor y Botín García fueron segundos. La competición se desarrolló durante dos días con una meteorología magnífica, con un sol espléndido; solamente en la segunda jornada el viento de Levante complicó un poco más el juego de los golfistas.

It was a magnificent sunny day with 31 women in the tournament field playing under the Stableford competition format in two categories. The winners, who went away with a trophy and a set of six glasses silk-screen printed with the club logo, were Josefa Gil Ruiz with 39 points in Category One and Cathy Wright with 40 points in Two. Following play a lunch was held at Restaurante La Choza, where the prizegiving ceremony took place.

El ganador de la primera categoría de caballeros fue Ricardo Ruiz con 38 puntos. En segundo lugar, quedó clasificado Francisco Justicia (37), quien además se llevó el premio a la bola más cercana, en el hoyo 3. El tercer premio fue para Luis Márquez, con 37 puntos. En segunda categoría caballeros, el ganador fue Sebastian Schilling con 39 puntos, seguido por Francisco Bonilla (39) y Mario Vera (37). The winner in Men’s Category One was Ricardo Ruiz with 38 points. Francisco Justicia finished second (37) and also went away with the prize for the closest ball to the pin, on the third hole. Luis Márquez was third with 37 points. The winner in Men’s Category Two was Sebastian Schilling with 39 points, followed by Francisco Bonilla (39) and Mario Vera (37). As far as the special prizes were concerned, the closest ball to the pin on the 18th was hit by Juan Mena and the longest drive was achieved by Oscar Macías. The special feature of this tournament was that it was played at Club de Golf Doña Julia; the roast lunch and prize-giving ceremony was then held at La Cañada.

Johne, ganadores del Torneo de El Corte Inglés en La Duquesa Giuseppe Robilotta y Gabriela Johne se proclamaron ganadores del Torneo celebrado en el Club de Golf La Duquesa y patrocinado por el Corte Inglés, que disputaron 76 jugadores, 60 hombres y 16 mujeres. El torneo era clasificatorio para la fase de zona, que se jugará en Antequera. Giuseppe Robilotta, con 38 puntos, logró la victoria por delante de Manuel García, segundo clasificado con 37 puntos, mientras que Adam Rossiter (38) se proclamó campeón junior. Tercero fue Gary Ward (34). En damas la ganadora fue Gabriela Johne, con 38 puntos, seguida de Mary Sutherland (33 puntos) y Claire Treacy (32). Este torneo sirvió para clasificar a los ganadores masculino y femenino para la fase de zona, que se jugará por parejas, el próximo 31 de mayo, en Antequera. Giuseppe Robilotta and Gabriela Johne were proclaimed champions of the tournament held at Club de Golf La Duquesa and sponsored by El Corte Inglés, involving 76 players: 60 men and 16 women. The tournament was a qualifying heat for the area stage, to be played at Antequera. Giuseppe Robilotta, with 38 points, achieved victory by beating Manuel García, in second place with 37 points, and Adam Rossiter (38 points) was champion in the Junior Category. Gary Ward was third (34). In the women’s competition the winner was Gabriela Johne, with 38 points, followed by Mary Sutherland (33 points)
and Claire Treacy (32). This tournament put the winners in the men’s and women’s competition through to the area stage, for pairs, to be held on May 31 at Antequera. The thirty best teams from around Spain will play in the national final at the Almenara course on June 14.

Con una jornada perfecta para la práctica del golf, más de 150 jugadores disputaron el 26 de abril en La Cañada la primera vuelta del trofeo El Corte Inglés, en el que Manuel Albaida, María del Carmen Aguilar y Rafael Franco (infantil) consiguieron ser los campeones de sus respectivas categorías. La competición disputada en La Cañada es una fase previa para lograr disputar las semifinales del torneo el 31 de mayo en Antequera, de donde saldrán los jugadores de zona que disputarán la final el 14 de junio en Almenara.

On a perfect day for playing golf, on April 26 over 150 players competed in the first round of the El Corte Inglés trophy at La Cañada, in which Manuel Albaida, María del Carmen Aguilar and Rafael Franco (youth) managed to become champions in their respective categories. The competition held at La Cañada is a preliminary stage for the semi-finals of the tournament on May 31 at Antequera, which in turn will decide the players to take part in the final on June 14 at Almenara.

La décima edición del Circuito Nacional Peugeot Loewe Tour comenzó a rodar el pasado 6 de marzo con la presentación oficial en Madrid. Una de las grandes novedades del circuito este año es la llegada del patrocinio de la firma de lujo Loewe que se une a Peugeot.
El Peugeot Loewe comienza con triunfos de Linhart y Lara y también el Challenge de España, y a través de la RFEG se seguirá apoyando a los jugadores en el Challenge Tour. El nivel de premios ha aumentado este año y se repartirá casi un millón y medio de euros en premios. La gran sorpresa para el golf del Campo de Gibraltar fue la llegada al circuito del guadiareño José Luís Gil que logró pasar el corte y terminar en el puesto cuarenta y ocho de la clasificación con ocho sobre el par. Álvaro Quirós fue el mejor campogibraltareño, al acabar vigésimo primero con el par del campo. José Luís Sánchez terminó en el puesto cuarenta con tres golpes sobre el par. Y Daniel Quirós acabó en el puesto cuarenta y seis, con cuatro impactos sobre el recorrido del campo. El resto de jugadores campogibraltareños no pasó el corte.

Escorpión In the first tournament of the Peugeot Loewe Tour, held from March 13 to 15 at Golf Escorpión (Valencia), Pedro Linhart imposed himself, completing the three rounds on 10 under par. Álvaro Quirós was the best Campo de Gibraltar player, finishing in 21st place with a course par. José Luís Sánchez finished 40th with three strokes over par, and Daniel Quirós came in 46th with four strokes over the course par. The rest of the Campo de Gibraltar players failed to make the cut. Maioris Valencian golfer José Manuel Lara was victorious in the second competition on the circuit, the Maioris Peugeot Loewe Tour Championships. Lara, who took the lead on the second day, kept his cool and performed brilliantly to finish on nine under par (70+68+69). Daniel Quirós was the best player from Campo de Gibraltar, finishing thirteenth on four over par. His brother Raúl Quirós was 20th with five strokes over par (73+76+73). Tras varios años de retraso, la Junta de Andalucía aprobó por fin el pasado 12 de febrero el decreto para regular las construcciones y funcionamiento de los campos de golf en Andalucía. Con esta ley el Gobierno andaluz quiere poner coto al desenfreno que ha existido en la última década en las creaciones de campos de golf que en algunos casos, demasiados para algunos, violaban normas elementales tanto para la calidad del propio juego como para el medio ambiente y las leyes urbanísticas.

Esencialmente, desde la entrada en vigor del decreto, el pasado 28 de febrero, en Andalucía se podrán construir dos tipos de campos de golf: el campo tradicional, realizado fundamentalmente para jugar con las mejores prestaciones y servicios; y el campo, que además de reunir todos los requisitos del anterior, también albergará viviendas, con el fin de apoyar la oferta turística, que será denominado de Interés Turístico. En ambos tipos de campo, el decreto garantiza el acceso público siempre que se cumplan las normas federativas y de cada instalación y el abono de los derechos de juego. Campo tradicional Los nuevos campos deberán tener una superficie mínima de 20 hectáreas y un recorrido de al menos 9 hoyos, debiendo exigirse otras 20 más por cada nueve hoyos adicionales. De este modo, un campo de 18 hoyos debe tener un mínimo de 40 hectáreas. También se deben cumplir una serie de criterios relativos a condiciones de juego y distancias de seguridad. Así, la distancia mínima desde el límite de las calles y greens en cualquiera de sus puntos a cualquier punto exterior vulnerable será de 70
metros y la separación entre ejes de calles de al menos 70 metros, salvo excepciones por el trazado que garanticen las condiciones de seguridad. En cuanto a los tees se establecerá una distancia mínima entre cualquiera de sus puntos exteriores y cualquier punto exterior vulnerable de 30 metros. Uno de los objetivos de este decreto es buscar la excelencia en las instalaciones y erradicar esa imagen de campos con calles estrechas o encajonadas entre viviendas. Estos campos podrán albergar, no obstante, otras instalaciones deportivas, de ocio, esparcimiento y restauración, establecimientos hoteleros con una categoría mínima de cuatro estrellas y otros usos de carácter asistencial, sanitario, administrativo o cultural. La implantación de un campo de golf deberá estar prevista expresamente en el Plan General de Ordenación Urbana correspondiente y sólo podrá llevarse a cabo en espacios con las debidas condiciones físicas, ambientales, paisajísticas y de suficiencia de infraestructuras y servicios. biente, el texto establece que para el uso de agua de riego será preceptiva la autorización del organismo de cuenca bajo las condiciones que establezca el plan hidrológico correspondiente, así como la obligación de elaborar un plan de conservación. Los campos de golf deberán ser regados preferentemente con aguas residuales convenientemente depuradas. No obstante, cuando no exista caudal suficiente de agua residual podrá recurrirse a otras formas complementarias con el siguiente orden de prelación: aguas subterráneas prepotables; aguas superficiales procedentes de cambios de características de concesiones otorgadas con anterioridad para regadío; aguas pluviales; aguas desaladas. Los usos urbanísticos de un campo tendrán que estar expresamente previstos en los Planes de Ordenación del Territorio de Ámbito Subregional. After several years’ delay, on February 12 the Andalusian Regional Government finally approved the decree for the regulation of the construction and operation of golf courses in Andalusia.
IN PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IN SPORT AND TOURISM
With this law the Andalusian government wants to put an end to the mayhem of the last decade in terms of golf course creation, which in some cases, too many cases say some, violated fundamental rules both on the quality of the game itself and on the environment, as well as planning laws. Essentially, since the decree came into force on February 28, in Andalusia two types of course can be built: the traditional course, built mainly to offer golf with the best facilities and services; and another kind of course, declared to be a tourist attraction, which in addition to combining the requisites of the traditional course will also incorporate homes, with the aim of backing the tourist industry. For both courses the decree guarantees public access as long as the rules of the federation and each institution are respected and green fees are paid.
The traditional course The new courses must cover a minimum surface area of 20 hectares and have at least nine holes, with another 20 hectares required for each additional nine holes. An 18-hole course must therefore be of at least 40 hectares. A number of criteria must also be followed in relation to the playing conditions and safety distances. The minimum distance from the border of the fairways and greens to any vulnerable point outside will be 70 metres, and the centres of each fairway must be separated by at least 70 metres, with the exception of layouts which ensure safety conditions. As far as the tees are concerned, a minimum distance of 30 metres will be established between its borders and any

vulnerable point outside. One of the aims of this decree is to ensure the excellence of the facilities and to eradicate the notion of courses with fairways that are too narrow or penned in by homes. However, these courses may house other sports, leisure, recreational, restaurant and hotel facilities, rated with a minimum of four stars, and other facilities for the purposes of

welfare, health, administration or cultural activities. The construction of a golf course must be expressly envisaged in the corresponding General Urban Management Plan and may only take place on land with the appropriate physical, environmental and scenic conditions and with sufficient infrastructures and services. With regard to the environment, the text stipulates that for the use of irrigation water authorisation from the water authority under the conditions established in the corresponding hydrological plan, as well as the obligation to draw up a conservation plan. The golf courses must be irrigated preferentially with duly treated wastewater. However, when there is insufficient wastewater available, other complementary sources may be used with the following order of precedence: pre-potable ground water; surface water from changes to specifications of concessions granted previously for irrigation water; rainwater; desalinated water. The decree makes it clear that in no event may water destined for human consumption be used. However, in the case of the Tourist Attraction courses, unrecycled water may be used in some cases to ensure their quality. Every course must draw up a Water Conservation Plan which must be approved in advance. The courses will have a network for collecting rainwater and wastewater separately.

and to mitigating the seasonal nature of tourism, broadening the range of sports and leisure services associated with tourism in the area in which they will be built. The construction of a Tourist Attraction Golf Course must fulfil certain special requisites. In other words, the courses will only be able to incorporate homes if they meet certain quality of play and environmental integration requirements. The courses will have a surface area of at least 70 hectares, with at least 18 holes and a minimum length of 6,000 metres: 30 more hectares for each nine holes. The distance between the centre of each fairway and the nearest centre of another fairway will be at least 60 metres. There must be a minimum distance of 90 metres from the centre of each fairway and every part of the green (including practice areas) to the nearest building. 20% of the surface are must be set aside for planting indigenous tree and shrub species of low water consumption. They must have a weather monitoring station. Lakes must be connected to the irrigation system with a total storage capacity of at least 100,000 cubic metres. Their use by tourists must be guaranteed, so most green fees will not be subject to club membership. Moreover, the decree enforces the incorporation of additional environmental sustainability and corporate social responsibility measures, as well as the accreditation of the ISO 9000 quality certificates and the ISO 14000 environmental management certificates, among other requirements.

decree is the designation of a body to approve the Tourist Attraction Courses. This remit falls to a Technical Evaluation Committee made up of representatives from the regional ministries for tourism, sport, land distribution and the environment, which will be responsible for issuing the mandatory report. The final declaration will be resolved by agreement with the Governing Council. The process for the declaration of the course as a Tourist Attraction will be initiated at the request of the golf course developer. Use of the course for property development must be expressly envisaged in the Sub-regional Land Management Plans. These plans must specify the criteria for the course’s compatible installations, the suitability for development and construction density of the homes, the type of homes and minimum distance in relation to the field of play, as well as the justification of the project in terms of local supply and demand. In view of the requirements of this decree, there are three scenarios for existing projects for the creation of golf courses: they meet the regulations and can therefore develop the course; they must readapt their initial project until it fulfils the new requirements; or they can consider it to be unviable and abandon the project. The decree establishes a period of two years for existing golf courses to adapt to the requirements related to use of water and, whenever possible, to the technical regulations relating to the design of the facilities and their complementary buildings. Likewise, the existing courses that meet all of the corresponding conditions may apply for official status as a Tourist Attraction Course. â–

El francés Thomas Levet se impuso en un final espectacular en el Mapfre Open de Andalucía by Valle Romano, disputado en Aloha Golf del 27 al 30 de marzo, tras vencer en un emocionante play-off al joven inglés de tan sólo 19 años Oliver Fisher. Los dos jugadores finalizaron los cuatro recorridos con 16 golpes bajo par y un sólo hoyo de desempate bastó para que Levet amarrara su cuarta victoria en el Circuito Europeo, después de sufrir una dolencia de vértigo que le apartó durante más de un año de la competición. El defensor del título, Lee Westwood, finalizó en tercera posición con 13 bajo par después de firmar 71 golpes. El
inglés protagonizó, al igual que el año anterior un torneo memorable, con el liderazgo de la prueba en la primera y en la tercera jornada. En la jornada final, Westwood comenzó con una ventaja de un golpe sobre Fisher, que mantuvo durante los cuatro primeros hoyos en los que ambos jugadores lograron tres birdies. Los dos primeros españoles clasificados fueron el malagueño Manuel Quirós y el barcelonés Álvaro Velasco, en el puesto décimo con 8 bajo par. Miguel Ángel Jiménez acabó el decimonoveno con cinco bajo par; José María Olazábal terminó en el puesto sesenta y uno con dos impactos sobre el par. Y Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño acabó en el puesto sesenta y cuatro con tres golpes sobre el par. Olazábal fue una de las grandes atracciones del torneo al regresar a la competición tras estar lesionado con una “espolioartropatía” desde agosto del año pasado. El jugador vasco anunció su participación en el torneo una semana antes de su inicio y sólo como una prueba para ver si sus dolencias en la espalda, rodilla y hombro podían aguantar el ritmo de la competición. Con esta intención Olazábal completó todo el programa propio de un jugador profesional y disputó el pro-am y las cuatro jornadas de competición. Su inicio en el torneo fue espectacular con un birdie en el primer hoyo y demostró que su clase y calidad siguen patentes a pesar de su larga inactividad. Al término del torneo Olazábal calificó la prueba de muy satisfactoria y avanzó su intención de jugar las próximas competiciones, incluido el Masters de Augusta. El guadiareño Álvaro Quirós sólo disputó la primera jornada de la competición, que terminó con 75 golpes, al sufrir un fuerte proceso gripal y optó por retirarse del torneo dadas las pocas opciones de pasar el corte para no agravar la enfermedad.

Levet wins the Andalusian Open with Olazábal back in the fray The Frenchman Thomas Levet imposed himself in a spectacular final in the Mapfre Andalusian Open by Valle Romano, held at Aloha Golf from March 27 to 30, after winning an exciting playoff against the young Englishman Oliver Fisher, just 19 years of age.
The two players ended the four rounds on 16 under par and just one tiebreaker hole was enough for Levet to secure his fourth victory on the European Circuit, after severe vertigo had kept him out of competition for over a year. The title defender, Lee Westwood, finished in third place with 13 under par, following a round of 71 strokes. The Englishman performed as memorably as he did in last year’s tournament, leading the competition on the first and third days. The second Andalusian Open held at Aloha Golf could be described as brilliant both due to the high quality of the participating players and to the magnificent condition of the Marbella course or the perfect organisation spearheaded by golfers Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño. The weather was also favourable, with days of sun and excellent temperatures, leading to good attendance from the public throughout the tournament. On the final day Westwood started with a one-stroke lead over Fisher which he maintained over the first four holes, with both players managing three birdies. On the fourth, Fisher drew level with another birdie, but Westwood regained his lead on the sixth. However, it wouldn’t last long as with two consecutive bogeys on the eighth and ninth, he handed his lead to Oliver, who scored another birdie on the tenth. When it looked like the tournament was in the hands of the two Englishmen, the

Frenchman Thomas Levet, scoring three birdies for one bogey on the first nine holes, drew closer with another birdie on the eleventh which brought him level with Westwood, and although he dropped a shot on the thirteenth, he managed to recover it on the next hole. On the sixteenth, with Fisher and Levet both scoring birdies, Westwood dropped back once and for all, and the Frenchman reduced Fisher’s lead with a 7.5-metre putt. On the eighteenth the young Englishman sent the ball into the water and Thomas scored a par to secure his place in the playoff. Only one hole was needed, the eighteenth, to bring victory to Thomas Levet, a player who has experience in tiebreakers (he lost the British Open in a playoff in 2002) and knows very well what winning is about with three triumphs on the European Tour under his belt: the Cannes Open in 1998, the British Master in 2001 in playoff, and the 2004 Scottish Open, which qualified him for the Ryder Cup. The top two Spaniards in the placings were Manuel Quirós from Malaga and Álvaro Velasco from Barcelona, in tenth on eight under par. María Olazábal was sixty-first on two over par. Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño finished 64th with three strokes over par. Olazábal was one of the big attractions of the tournament having returned to competition after being injured with arthropathy since August last year. The Basque player announced one week beforehand that he would take part in the tournament to see how his back, knee and shoulder complaints would hold up to the pace of a competition. With this goal in mind Olazábal completed the schedule for professional players, competing in the Pro-Am and the four days of competition. He made a spectacular start to the tournament with a birdie on the first hole and showed that his class and quality are still there despite his long period of inactivity. At the end of the tournament Olazábal said he was very satisfied and he stated his intention to play in forthcoming competitions, including the Augusta Masters. Guadiaro golfer Álvaro Quirós only played on the first day of the competition, finishing on 75 strokes and withdrawing from the tournament when he saw that there was little chance of making the cut to avoid aggravating a bad case of flu.

Nuevo curso en el Centro de Formación de Golf de Sotogrande Gloria Jiménez

El Centro de Formación de Golf de Sotogrande puso en marcha el 25 de marzo un nuevo curso con 15 alumnos inscritos en el segundo curso de Especialista de Mantenimiento de Campos. La iniciativa ha vuelto a repetirse después de que el año pasado se pusiera en marcha el primer curso con gran éxito. El curso se desarrollará durante los próximos tres meses con clases teóricas en el Hotel NH Sotogrande y prácticas en el club de golf de La Reserva y Almenara. Además, los alumnos realizarán durante dos semanas prácticas laborales en las instalaciones de Sotogrande. El programa cuenta con un amplio y experimentado profesorado,
como Manuel Castillo director del centro de promoción de la salud La Manzana en el hotel Almenara, Francisco Arce, jefe de infraestructuras de Sotogrande S.A., Javier Gutiérrez, HeadGreenkeeper de Sotogrande S.A., Miguel Salas, director de Recursos Humanos de Sotogrande S.A., Reyes Macías, directora de marketing y Covadonga Basagoiti, directora de La Reserva. New course at the Sotogrande Golf Education Centre
On March 25, with 15 students enrolled, Sotogrande Golf Education Centre began its second Course Maintenance Specialist course. The initiative was repeated following the success of last year’s course. The programme will run for three months with theory classes at Hotel NH Sotogrande and practical lessons at the La Reserva and Almenara golf clubs. The students will also do two weeks of work experience at Sotogrande facilities. The course has a large number of experienced teachers, such as Manuel Castillo, the manager of the La Manzana health promotion centre at Hotel Almenara, Francisco Arce, Sotogrande S.A. head of infrastructures, Javier Guitérrez, Sotogrande S.A. head greenkeeper, Miguel Salas, Sotogrande S.A. human resources manager, Reyes Macías, marketing director, and Covadonga Basagoiti, manager of La Reserva. During the training period the students acquire knowledge of marking, planning, machinery, plague control, the environment, occupational hazards and first aid. José Luis Ordovás, a
golf competition referee, also took part in the first week of classes in the course, illustrating concepts to the students with practical cases which he knows first hand thanks to his extensive experience in the industry. The idea to create the Golf Training Centre in Sotogrande emerged three years ago in response to the need to increase professional expertise in the golf industry, in which there are a variety of job roles related to the sport. objective of the Education Centre, a pioneer and the only one of its kind in Europe, is to provide professional training to young people in the Sotogrande area via specialised courses, with aim of preparing them for employment opportunities emerging in the golf world and therefore helping them to incorporate into the job market.

La victoria del irlandés Peter Lawrie en el desempate ante el español Nacho Garrido fue el punto final a una última jornada trepidante de golf que abrió de forma espectacular el abanico de candidatos al título. En torno a diez jugadores tuvieron opciones en los últimos cinco hoyos del campeonato a luchar por el título merced a estar dos y tres golpes del líder de turno. Y el irlandés Peter Lawrie se adjudicó su primer torneo del Circuito Europeo gracias a que no le tembló durante toda la jornada el pulso y que se impuso en el playoff a Garrido en el segundo hoyo de desempate, donde el español se fue al agua. Lawrie fue de menos a más durante todo el torneo, siempre bien colocado con tarjetas bajo el par del campo, y dio el zarpazo en la última jornada. Victory for the Irishman Peter Lawrie in the tiebreaker against the Spaniard Nacho Garrido marked the end of an enthralling final day of golf in which the number of candidates for the title was remarkable. Around ten players had a chance of being in the fight for the title on the last five holes of the championships, just two or three shots behind the leader. Irishman Peter Lawrie won his first European Circuit tournament by keeping his cool throughout the day, beating Garrido on the second hole of the tiebreaker, where the Spaniard went in the water. Lawrie went from strength to strength throughout the tournament, remaining well-placed with scorecards under the course par and snatching the title on the final day. As the Irishman admitted, he didn’t look at the scoreboard until the 18th and perhaps this helped him not to feel the pressure. Lawrie finished his last round in 67 strokes. But Nacho Garrido, the big star of the Open from the first day, succumbed to this altitude sickness. The golfer from Madrid started with an initial scorecard of 66 strokes, which he endorsed the next day with an incredible round of 63, an absolute course record which put him on 15 under par on the second day. But from then on his nightmare began, only managing 72 strokes, the course par, on the Friday, which he repeated on the final day. His final round, with Miguel

Una de las novedades presentadas en el Open de Andalucía, primer torneo en el continente europeo del Circuito Europeo esta temporada, fue la Unidad de Fisioterapia. La Unidad, patrocinada por Dubai, está dirigida por Rob Hillman y cuenta con cuatro fisioterapeutas especializados, entre ellos el español Álvaro Zerolo, cuatro osteópatas, un quiropráctico y dos terapeutas deportivos; un equipo de seis personas que asistirán a 35 torneos, y la unidad viajará a 26. El nuevo equipamiento incluye tablas de Enraf Nonius, equipos de fuerza y preparación de Technogym, sistemas portátiles de ultrasonidos de GE Healthcare, vendas ionizadas y de compresión de Canterbury y una gama de productos Power Bar de Nestlé Sports Nutrition. La Unidad se encuentra instalada en un camión móvil de gran tonelaje y su objetivo fundamental es ofrecer a los jugadores del circuito atención especializada para prevenir, diagnosticar y en algunos casos sanar lesiones deportivas. La Unidad recibe en una semana de competición en torno a las 220 visitas y curiosamente casi todas ellas son siempre antes de comenzar la competición en sí, es decir los martes y miércoles sobre todo porque los jugadores son un poco hipocondriácos al inicio pero una vez que comienza el juego se olvidan ya de las molestias que sufren, señala uno de los fisioterapeutas. La Unidad tiene contacto directo con los hospitales y clínicas más cercanos al lugar de la competición para en su caso enviar pruebas médicas para un mejor diagnóstico. Las lesiones más comunes y que más se tratan son las de muñeca; y entre las más curiosas también se encuentran las oculares.

One of the innovations present in the Andalusian Open, the first tournament on the continent in the European Circuit this year, was the Physiotherapy Unit.
The unit uses an HGV lorry and its main aim is to offer the players on the circuit specialised attention to prevent, diagnose and in some cases treat sports injuries.
The unit, sponsored by Dubai, is managed by Rob Hillman and has four specialised physiotherapists (including Spaniard Álvaro Zerolo), four osteopaths, a chiropractor and two sports therapists. A team of six people will attend 35 of the tournaments, and the entire unit will travel to 26. The new equipment includes Enraf Nonius treatment couches, Technogym strength and training equipment, portable GE Healthcare ultrasound systems, Canterbury ionised and compression bandages and a range of Nestlé Sports Nutrition Power Bar products.
In a week of competition the unit receives around 220 visits and, interestingly, nearly all of them are before the competition itself begins, in particular the Tuesdays and Wednesdays, because, as one of the physiotherapists indicated, “the players are a bit hypochondriac at the beginning but once play starts they forget about their discomforts”. The unit is in direct contact with the hospitals and clinics nearest to the competition in case medical tests have to be carried out for a better diagnosis. The most common and most frequently treated injuries are to the wrist and the most curious complaints include eye problems.

Con un expresivo “vamos para adentro” Jiménez invitó a todos los aficionados a descubrir lo que deparaban los cerca de 60 expositores que mostraban las últimas
novedades y todo tipo de información sobre campos de golf y todo lo relacionado con su entorno: ayuntamientos, medios de comunicación, fabricantes de importadores de material, empresas de ropa y equipamientos, clubes, hoteles, empresas de maquinarias, federaciones y asociaciones, entre otros aspectos sobre el amplio abanico del mundo del golf. San Roque, bajo el lema ‘capital europea del golf’ estuvo presente con un expositor
propio donde tenían cabida una completa información sobre los nueve campos del municipio sanroqueño. Al mismo tiempo que Mediterranean Golf se celebró por un lado las V Jornadas sobre Golf y Medio Ambiente, con más de cuatrocientos asistentes; y Jardinova, el primer salón del paisajismo, jardinería, piscina y wellness, estrechamente ligado al mundo del golf, que contó con cerca de cuarenta expositores. ■
Mediterranean Golf: a new point of contact is born
The Mediterranean Golf Show held from April 16 to 19 at Malaga’s Exhibition and Conference Hall, came to a close having welcomed 4,000 visitors, including professionals and the general public. Inaugurated by Malaga golfer Miguel Ángel Jiménez, both shows filled the aisles of the exhibition centre with companies specialising in the golf and gardening industries, with over 100 exhibitors showcasing their products. Mediterranean Golf was also held in parallel with the conference organised annually by Promotur, now in its fifth year, related to golf and the environment. On this occasion, with 400 participants congregating, the conference focussed on the
study of the environmental management of golf courses: planning, design, construction, maintenance and management under a sustainable development model. San Roque was present at ‘Mediterranean’ with the municipality’s own stand, which received a great many visits from the public and from professionals. The information provided on the San Roque stand was fairly diverse and included an explanatory golf leaflet, describing the municipality’s nine courses and published in Spanish

and English, and a graphic guide to the municipality, offering extensive information on San Roque as a tourist destination. The San Roque Tourist Board staff worked hard over the four days of the show to offer a wide range of information to all of the visitors showing an interest in the municipality and its golf courses. Club de Golf La Duquesa and La Hacienda de Valderrama were also present at Mediterranean Golf with their own stands. ■

La llegada del Open de España a Andalucía, justo reconocimiento a uno de los rincones golfísticos del planeta que maravilla a Donald Trump, arrastra la figura del estadounidense John Daly, el jugador de los excesos. En la cancha y fuera de ella. La violencia de sus golpes creó su leyenda, rematada luego con dos grandes (PGA’91 y British’95), pero no gastó más tinta que la perniciosa espiral en la que entró a continuación: demasiadas chicas, alcohol, juego… Confesiones que llenaron las revistas y quedaron en evidencia cuando hace años el síndrome de abstinencia le llenó de temblores en un green. Daly encarna el gusto megalómano americano, más partidario del estruendo de un driver que de la sutileza de un hierro 9. Ese estigma precisamente le ha impedido ser mejor golfista. Ha alimentado dentro de él una urgencia de
deleitar al aficionado con el palo-de-grancabeza en lugar de utilizar su gran cabeza para agarrar otro palo que demandaba la situación. Ocurrió en el Olympic en el año 1998, por encontrar explicaciones a su tortuoso siglo XXI. “La gente no ha venido a verme con el driver en la bolsa. Mañana lo saco”. Y el campo no lo demandaba. Tal obsesión ha menospreciado un juego alrededor de green cuanto menos digno de un doble ganador de Grand Slams.

Todo lo demás que se dice de Daly es espumillón. Al fondo de la caja ya no queda más. Arranca simpatías cuando hace tres años fijó su caravana durante el Masters de Augusta al lado de Hooters, la cadena de generosas camareras y caloríficas hamburguesas. Una fortuna arruinada en los casinos, el miedo a volar, tres divorcios –una de sus ex mujeres cumplen pena de cárcel por asuntos con la droga-, una adicción extrema a la coca cola light (se puede llegar a beber seis latas en una ronda de prácticas de 18 hoyos) y al tabaco son las aristas de un personaje que está a mitad de camino entre un genio y la mujer barbuda del circo. Pero en tiempos de dominio de Tiger Woods es el gran gancho que encuentra el golf lejos del número 1 mundial. Bienvenido sea. Y si alguien se encuentra delante de él con un palo en la mano, sólo un consejo. Apártese.

The arrival of the Spanish Open in Andalusia, just recognition of one of the Donald Trump’s favoured world golf destination, brings with it the figure of US golfer John Daly, the player of excesses, on the course and off. But in the era of Tiger Woods’s dominance he is golf’s big attraction away from the world number one. May he be welcomed with open arms. And if anyone finds themselves in front of him with a club in his hand, just one piece of advice: get out of the way.

La sabiduría de elegir el palo adecuado The wisdom of choosing the right club Todo nuevo jugador de golf que haya conseguido ya un nivel de juego aceptable y quiera poseer su propia bolsa de palos debe tener en cuenta antes de adquirir el material unas ciertas recomendaciones básicas. Es preferible siempre que el nuevo jugador pida consejos a especialistas para que le determinen que clase de palo se puede adaptar mejor a sus características físicas y de juego. La altura, el peso, la edad o el tamaño de las manos, entre otros factores, son cuestiones claves para la elección de un determinado palo.
Existen dos sistemas de baremación, complementarios, para determinar que tipo de palo puede corresponder a cada jugador: el fitting estático y el fitting dinámico. El fitting estático consiste en la recopilación de los datos físicos del nuevo jugador: la altura, la distancia de la muñeca al suelo y el tamaño de las manos y dedos, velocidad de swing y tendencia generalizada de efectos, y con ellos se puede determinar matemáticamente, según unas tablas establecidas, el tipo de palo que debe usar ese jugador: la longitud que debe tener y el lie (angulo) de su cabeza.

Se suele utilizar unas marcas termicas en la suela de la cabeza del palo para determinar el punto de impacto. También es determinante observar las marcas o chuletas que se quedan en la hierba si no se poseen las mencionadas marcas. Un fitting estático correcto resulta cuando la base de la cabeza del palo toca toda totalmente en el suelo; un lie demasiado bajo sería incorrecto, al igual que un lie demasiado alto. Una vez determinado el lie de un palo se debe pasar a elegir el tipo de varilla, de la que suelen existir cinco modalidades diferentes, según la flexibilidad; y a continuación el grip, del que también existen al menos cinco clases distintas, según el tamaño de las manos y dedos. Este paso se averigua o bien midiendo la velocidad del swing en el momento del Impacto o sabiendo las distancias que consigue el jugador con un palo determinado. Según todos los factores observados anteriormente pueden existir casi un millón de combinaciones posibles para determinar el palo correcto de una persona.
Thermal markers are usually used on the face of the clubhead to determine the point of impact. If the player does not have these markers the marks or divots in the turf can be determining factors to observe. The static fitting has been successful when the entire base of the clubhead touches the ground; a lie that is too low or too high would be incorrect.

Pocas veces una expresión importada, como es la de lujo asiático, se aplica con tanta corrección como cuando hablamos de Valderrama y de su campo de golf.
Aquí el golfista encuentra absolutamente todos los elementos que uno tiene en su mente cuando se imagina aquello del lujo asiático. Desde que entras en la urbanización hasta cuando llegas al golf, se te ponen los ojos como platos y con dificultades consigues cerrarlos. Pero cuando entras en el escenario dónde en unos instantes vas a intentar desplegar toda tu sapiencia golfística, alucinas en colores que dicen los modernos. Si el golfista busca la gloria, Valderrama es uno de esos lugares elegidos en el mundo dónde poder encontrarla. Es verdad que para cualquier golfista que se precie el
referente es el Augusta National, pero Valderrama bien podría ser considerado como su hermano pequeño y bueno será, aunque yo no pueda verlo para entonces, ver cual ha sido su evolución dentro de 50 años, los de más que tiene el campo georgiano con relación al andaluz. Llegar a Valderrama es hacerlo a uno de esos templos referencia de cualquier religión pues todo en aquí transmite paz y tranquilidad. El silencio impresiona, como cuando entras en un templo, y enseguida te sientes transportado al lujo

asiático de tus sueños. El trato amable que te dispensan está hecho para hacerte sentirte en confianza y cuando ves llegar tu cochecito, hasta en eso tienen la alta gama de los coches de golf, empiezas a sentir un cosquilleo que poco a poco te va envolviendo hasta llegar al tee del uno dónde te quedas como paralizado por el peso de la historia. Y es que además de ser sede habitual del Volvo Masters, Valderrama se hizo famoso en el mundo entero por haber acogido la Ryder Cup de 1997 con Severiano Ballesteros al frente del equipo europeo que a la postre iba a resultar

vencedor. Y claro, como esas imágenes todavía quien más quien menos las tiene muy presentes, te parece estar oyendo los vítores del público y claro, tú te sientes atenazado. Sensación que se agranda al ver la calle del 1 tan inmaculada, una de las grandes virtudes de Valderrama desde su creación tener siempre un cuidado exquisito del campo, y pensar
en los destrozos que allí puedes realizar. He aquí uno de los pocos problemas que encierra Valderrama para el común de los golfistas, que no está reservado forzosamente para cualquier jugador, si no que más bien si le quieres sacar el máximo partido tu nivel tiene que ser muy próximo del dígito de Handicap pues de lo contrario sólo podrás disfrutar de un sitio excepcional y de un entorno de
ensueño, pero tu gozo estará cojo de sensaciones pues la presión que ejerce el campo a veces es excesiva. Afortunadamente siempre está preparado para el aficionado pues si lo estuviese como para el Volvo o la Ryder, entonces si que conviene evitarlo. Pero volvamos a nuestra salida del 1 y a esos nervios que al mismo tiempo vienen acompañados de una cierta excitación por jugar en el mismo escenario que lo hizo en su momento Tiger

y demás monstruos sagrados de éste deporte. Si miramos al frente nos damos cuenta de lo que nos espera en las próximas 4 horas. Una calle que parece ancha, pero dónde rápidamente te das cuenta que tu golf tiene que estar a su mejor nivel pues debes de colocar perfectamente tu golpe de salida y es el momento elegido por los árboles para ir agrandándose a medida que buscas un sitio dónde poner la bola. Si superas ese primer reto, sabes que nunca más tu golf será igual al que tenías cuando llegaste a Valderrama. Desde ese preciso instante intuyes que has conseguido elevar el listón de tu juego y sea cual sea el resultado que vayas a cosechar, le estás agradecido a Valderrama pues te acaba de dar una gran lección de táctica que te va a ser muy útil en tus próximos golpes. Antes de llegar aquí has actuado en campos, muchos de ellos difíciles, pero nunca en uno tan exigente como éste dónde te tienes que pensar cualquier golpe desde el drive hasta el más insignificante putt, y eso claro te hace mejor jugador a marchas forzadas. Una vez torturado por el green del 1, a dónde has llegado tras haber sorteado el árbol de la derecha pues claro te habías protegido del peligro de la izquierda en tu salida y tras ese alivio ahora en tu segundo
tenías un panorama siniestro, pero amigo, esto es Valderrama! Y digo bien que tras salir sin daños morales del green del 1, ya has entendido lo que es un campo exigente, a la par que difícil, viene el 2 con ese gigantesco árbol en mitad de la calle que te obliga a saber tanto de estrategia como sabía Napoleón. Y así se van desgranando los hoyos de un campo sin que veas aparecer el más mínimo atisbo de facilidad y curiosamente pese a ello tú no te sulfuras si no que intentas aprovechar al máximo todas las enseñanzas que te dispensa el golf como si de un Masters en golf se tratase. Y evidentemente poco a poco te vas agarrando más al campo intentando como buen alumno que eres seguir lo que él te está indicando a cada uno de tus golpes. Ya te has olvidado de la impresión que te producía el inmaculado tapiz que eran las calles que provocaban que tenías hasta miedo de darle a la bola, no vaya a ser que rompas la estética del campo, no eso ya forma parte del pasado, te has quedado enganchado por Valderrama y su poder y lo único que piensas es en competir y en intentar salir lo más airoso posible del reto que te han planteado en el 1. Y claro, si lo consigues la satisfacción que sientes es mayor de la que has podido sentir nunca. Esta es otra de las virtudes

de Valderrama hacerte experimentar las mejores sensaciones de tu vida golfística pero claro para ello tienes que demostrar un nivel y sobre todo y mucho más importante, saber extraer lo mejor de tu juego y eso es válido sea cual sea el nivel del jugador. Es cierto que cuanto mejor sea el atrevido que viene a desafiar al campo, más posibilidades tiene de alcanzar esa satisfacción máxima, pero aun sin tener un gran handicap si eres capaz de sacar lo mejor de tu juego, pues experimentarás esas sensaciones que afirmo rotundamente que solo Valderrama es capaz de proporcionarte a lo largo de tu vida golfística, excepción hecha claro está del Augusta National. Si a todo esto le añadimos un entorno privilegiado y una sensación única cuando estás en el campo, te sientes el dueño del lugar pues cada hoyo parece no tener nada que ver ni con el anterior ni el posterior ya que no ves a nadie por culpa de los árboles que te aíslan del mundanal ruido, nos damos cuenta que Valderrama es realmente uno de esos sitios, como los que reflejan el lujo asiático, que uno debe absolutamente visitar antes de morirse pues sólo así su conciencia golfística estará en paz El hoyo 9 es sin duda alguna uno, por no decir el mejor hoyo de Valderrama, pero al mismo tiempo es uno de los grandes desconocidos por el gran público que se siente
esté la bandera te entran en juego los bunkers o incluso el propio desnivel de la zona de matar. En fin en mi opinión el mejor y más completo reto que puedes tener en Valderrama dónde se aúnan la necesidad de potencia y de precisión para hacerte salir vivo de un desafío impresionante. HAY QUE DARSE EL GUSTAZO Antes de ir a Valderrama sueñas con el hoyo 17 y la posibilidad de sentirte como Miguel Ángel Jiménez cuando acertó su segundo golpe en éste par 5 para conseguir un albatros histórico. Pero si es verdad que la sensación que puedes experimentar al intentar alcanzar el green de dos, es extraordinaria, no lo es menos, y no hay que despreciarla, intentar conseguir el birdie con el tercer golpe pues a estas alturas del recorrido ya sabemos como se las gasta el campo y por consiguiente intuimos que no vamos a tener una misión fácil. Aquí en éste mismo escenario tropezó varias veces y a punto estuvo de perder el American Express todo un Tiger Woods que ya dominaba claramente el golf mundial. Por eso intentar superar ese reto, no se crean que es fácil, es creo yo bastante más impresionante que poner la bola en el green con el segundo golpe. Pruébenlo no se arrepentirán. ■

Necesitas una salida perfecta y en su sitio y no dejarte llevar por la anchura que tiene la zona de caída de los drives. Si consigues posicionar tu golpe de salida en el sitio, o sea tras un vuelo lo más recto posible desde el tee, podrás intentar atacar un green que sentirás que no te deja el más mínimo derecho al fallo. Here golfers find absolutely all of the elements they have in mind when they imagine the concept of total opulence. From the entrance to the resort to the golf course, your eyes will be like saucers and difficult to close. But when you enter the setting where you are about to attempt to deploy all of your golfing wisdom, you will be dumfounded, as they say. If a golfer is looking for glory, Valderrama is one of the world’s chosen
places to find it. It’s true that for any selfrespecting golfer the Augusta National is the benchmark, but Valderrama could easily be seen as its younger brother and it will be interesting, although I won’t witness it myself, to see how things have evolved in 50 years time and what the Georgian course has over the Andalusian. Arriving at Valderrama is like reaching an important temple of any religion; everything

here transmits peace and tranquillity. The silence is striking, like when you enter a temple, and soon you feel like you have been transported to the luxurious destination of your dreams. The friendly service provided makes you feel at home and when you see your buggy arrive - even the golf buggies are top of the range - you start to feel a tingling which gradually envelops you until you reach the first tee and are left paralysed by the weight of history.

The ninth is undoubtedly one of, if not the best hole of Valderrama
Because in addition to being the regular venue for the Volvo Masters, Valderrama made its fame around the world when it hosted the 1997 Ryder Cup, with Severiano Ballesteros leading a European team to victory. And of course, with these images still present in everyone’s minds, it feels like you are hearing the cheers of the public, and naturally you are gripped with fear. The feeling grows as you look out over the immaculate fairway (the exquisite condition of the course has been one of the great virtues of Valderrama since its creation) and you think about the damage you could cause. This is one of the few problems entailed by Valderrama for the common golfer: it’s not necessarily suitable for every player. If you want to make the most of your round, your standard of play must be very close to the handicap, otherwise you will be able to enjoy en exceptional place and a fairytale setting, but your enjoyment will be hindered by the sometimes excessive pressure exerted by the course. Fortunately it’s always as well prepared for the amateur as it is for the Volvo or Ryder Cup, which is when you should avoid it. But let’s return to our tee-off on the first and those nerves that are accompanied by the excitement of playing on the same stage that Tiger and the other giants of this sport have played on. Looking ahead, you realise what awaits you over the next four hours. A fairway which seems wide but where it quickly dawns on you that your golf has be at its best; your opening stroke has to be perfect and the trees seem to get bigger and bigger as you look for somewhere to put the ball. If you overcome this challenge, you know that your golf will never be as it was when you arrived at Valderrama. From this moment on you perceive that you have managed to raise your game and whatever the result you will yield, you are grateful to Valderrama for giving you a lesson in tactics that will be very useful to you in your next shots. Before coming here you have played on courses, many of them difficult, but never have you played on one as demanding as this, where you have to think about every shot, from the drive to the most insignificant putt, and there is no doubt that this makes you a better player in a very short space of time. Having been tortured by the green on the first, which you have reached after negotiating the tree on the right (you had to protect yourself from the danger on the left, of course) and with a sense of relief
you move on to the sinister, but friendly, sight of the second hole: this is Valderrama! Having overcome the first green free of moral damages, you have already understood that the course is as demanding as it is difficult, but the second hole arrives with its gigantic tree in the middle of the fairway, forcing you to quickly acquire Napoleon-like strategy. And this is how the holes of the course reel off, without giving you slightest hint of ‘easiness’ and, curiously, despite this, you won’t suffer, but will simply try to get the most out of the lesson you are being taught, as though you were doing a masters in golf. And little by little you manage to get a grip of the course, trying as the good student that you are to follow its indications on each shot. You have forgotten the impression it made on you with its immaculate fairways that made you fear, even, to hit the ball, lest
Before going to Valderrama you dream of the seventeenth you should ruin the course’s aesthetics. No, that feeling is in past and you are hooked by Valderrama and its power, and all you think about is competing and attempting to acquit yourself as well as possible in the challenge put to you on the first hole. And of course, if you manage it the satisfaction you feel is greater than you have ever felt before. This is another of Valderrama’s virtues: making you experience the best feelings in your golfing life, but naturally you have demonstrate a good standard and, above all and much more importantly, you must know how to get the best out of your game, and this applies to any player whatever their standard. It’s true that the better the brave player who dares to challenge the course, the more chance they will have to achieve that maximum sense of satisfaction, but even without a great handicap if you are able to get the best out of your game you will experience that which, I emphatically assert, only Valderrama is able to provide during your life as a golfer, with the obvious exception of the Augusta National.

Added to the privileged setting and a unique sensation when you are on the course, all of this makes you feel like you own the place, with each hole seemingly completely separate to the last and the next; you can’t see anybody due to the trees that protect you from the madding crowd, and you realise that Valderrama is truly the lap of luxury, a place that simply must be visited before you die or your golfing conscience will not be at peace. THE GREAT UNKNOWN The ninth is undoubtedly one of, if not the best hole of Valderrama, but it is also one of the great unknowns among the general public, who are attracted by the seventeenth and its splendour, or by the eighteenth due to its history, or even by the eleventh and its impressive views from the green, the highest point of the course. But for the ninth is, as they say, one hell of a hole. Like the first, it sums up the essence of the course. Your tee shot has to be perfect and positioned where it should be; don’t be fooled by the width of the landing area. If you manage a good position off your tee shot - that is, following the straightest possible trajectory from the tee - you will attempt to attack a green that will make you feel like you don’t have the slightest of margins of error. Depending on where the pin is, bunkers or even the slope of the green itself come into play. In short, in my view this hole is the best and most complete challenge provided by Valderrama, in which both power and precision are needed to come out alive. DELIGHT IN IT Before going to Valderrama you dream of the seventeenth and the opportunity to feel like Miguel Ángel Jiménez when he holed his second shot on this par 5 to achieve a historic albatross. But if the feeling that you can experience trying to reach the green in two is extraordinary, attempting a birdie with the third shot is equally as challenging an undertaking; at this point on the course we already know how it behaves and we sense that it’s going to be no easy task. Right on this spot Tiger Woods, who was already clearly dominating world golf, slipped up several times and almost lost the American Express. So don’t think that trying to overcome this challenge is easy; in my view it’s a good deal more impressive than putting the ball on the green on your second shot. Have a go, you won’t regret it. ■

Inaugurado en 2003, este campo se localiza en un bello paraje de la zona alta de Sotogrande, caracterizado por una vegetación autóctona de pinos mediterráneos, acebuches y alcornoques. El diseño de Cabell B. Robinson, discípulo del prestigioso Robert Trent Jones, enclava a La Reserva entre dos valles. El recorrido de 18
hoyos cuenta con cuatro lagos y sus greens se caracterizan por su generosa extensión y por su variedad de formas, al igual que ocurre con los bunkers. El campo ocupa una superficie de 72 hectáreas y su longitud es de 6.700 metros, pero al disponer de cinco tees de salida en cada hoyo puede ser disfrutado por todo tipo de jugadores.

El trazado presenta calles onduladas, bunkers profundos y
algunos de los más impresionantes tees de Europa. Con este recorrido, Almenara ofrece al golfista el perfecto equilibrio de juego, que se complementa con unas espléndidas vistas. El campo se encuentra en la ladera de la Sierra Almenara, por lo que el recorrido se adapta a ésta.

La Cañada surge de la iniciativa de Jaime Ortiz Patiño, que se interesó por las inquietudes que presentaban los guadiareños por el golf y su práctica. El Ayuntamiento proporcionó el terreno, Robert Trent Jones se encargó del diseño y La Cañada se hizo realidad en 1991, tratándose del primer club de golf municipal de España. Diez años más
tarde, gracias a la ayuda económica del programa First Tee y a Ortiz Patiño, se abrieron los segundos nueve hoyos, esta vez diseñados por Dave Thomas. El campo tiene un recorrido ameno y variado que se caracteriza por una importante arboleda a base de especies autóctonas y la cañada del hoyo 18, que da nombre al campo.
La Cañada is fruit of the initiative of Jaime Ortiz Patiño, who took an interest in the people of Guadiaro’s enthusiasm for golf. The Municipal Council supplied the land, Robert Trent Jones designed the course and La Cañada became a reality in 1991 as the first municipal golf course in Spain. Ten years later, thanks to financial support
from the First Tee scheme and Ortiz Patiño, the second nine holes were opened, this time designed by Dave Thomas. The course has an enjoyable layout and is characterised by a large number of indigenous tree species and the ravine (“cañada” in Spanish) which gives the course its name.

Situado en el municipio de Manilva el Club de Golf La Duquesa tiene un recorrido muy variado que permite disfrutar al máximo a jugadores de todos los niveles. El campo está dividido en dos partes. La primera, con un estilo más inglés en el que predominan las calles estrechas y los greens elevados, que requieren golpes
certeros. Por su parte, los segundos nueve hoyos son algo más fáciles ya que las calles se ensanchan en comparación con las de la primera vuelta. En el campo de La Duquesa hay que tener muy en cuenta el viento ya que en función de la fuerza y la dirección de éste, el campo puede transformarse totalmente.
Located in the municipality of Manilva, Club de Golf La Duquesa has a very varied course which allows players of all levels to get the most out of a day’s golf. The course is divided into two parts. The first is of a more English style, with narrow fairways and elevated greens which require
accurate strokes. The back nine holes are a little easier because the fairways are wider than those of the front nine. On the La Duquesa course the wind has to be taken seriously because depending on its strength and direction the course can be completely transformed.

Diseñado por Peter Allis y Clive Clark e inaugurado en 1992, ofrece unas condiciones naturales que lo han convertido en un lugar de moda en los últimos años. Sus espectaculares vistas al mar Mediterráneo, a Gibraltar y a la cordillera norte de Marruecos
lo convierten en un lugar ideal para practicar el golf. Respecto al trazado del campo, tiene obstáculos de agua, especialmente significativos en el hoyo 2. El viento también suele entrar en juego, poniendo a veces grandes dificultades para que la bola no se salga de la calle.
Alcaidesa is the only links type golf course in the south of Spain. It was designed by Peter Allis and Clive Clark in 1992 and offers natural conditions which have made it a fashionable venue in recent years. Its spectacular views over the Mediterranean, to Gibraltar and the

Desde el pasado mes de octubre Alcaidesa cuenta con un segundo campo, convirtiéndose en el más reciente de la zona. Sus 18 hoyos repartidos en más de 6.000 metros cuentan con el sello único de Dave Thomas, destacando su mayor dificultad con respecto al primero gracias a sus bunkers y zonas de lagos. Los greens
de ambos campos también son radicalmente distintos, mientras que en el Links son abruptos y pequeños, los del nuevo campo sorprenden por su llanura y amplitud. Pero no todo son diferencias, viejo y nuevo campo tienen par 72 y la exposición al aire en ambos es un handicap que los jugadores deben superar.
From October of this year Alcaidesa has boasted a second course, the most recent in the area. Its 18 holes stretching over 6,000 metres have the unique seal of Dave Thomas and the course is more difficult than the old one due to its bunkers and lake areas. The greens on the two courses are
also radically different: the Links greens are steep and small while the greens on the new course are surprisingly flat and spacious. But it’s not all differences; old and new are both par 72 and exposure to the wind is a hindrance that players must overcome on both courses.

Amplio programa estival en la Academia de Golf Sotogrande La Academia de Golf Sotogrande, calificada como Centro de Alto Rendimiento de Andalucía, ha preparado para sus abonados y visitantes un intenso programa estival que engloba tanto programas de aprendizaje y mejora para niños y adultos como diferentes actividades paralelas como torneos de juego corto, apertura de horarios nocturnos o celebración de clinics, entre otras. Así, a partir de los meses de julio y agosto se pondrá en marcha un programa especial para niños, de 5 a 15 años, adecuados a cada nivel de juego y edad con clases prácticas y teóricas, con enseñanzas de las reglas del juego. Y también se ofrece un programa para adultos de 12 horas de clase, con opción de dos horas diarias, semanal o mensual con clases prácticas y
teóricas y con la opción de poder conseguir el hándicap y la licencia federativa. De igual modo, de la mano de los profesionales de la Academia, Irene Lara, Manuel Quiñones, Santiago Pineda y Peter Millhouse, durante todo el verano se tendrá a disposición de sus visitantes el sistema de análisis de swing para jugadores de cierto nivel. En una sala especial la Academia graba en video el swing y realiza un estudio para mejorar la técnica que el visitante puede llevarse consigo en un disco CD; incluso se puede comparar el swing con el de jugadores profesionales y observar la evolución del mismo. La Academia va a organizar para estos meses estivales torneos de juego corto, de putting green, chipping y tres hoyos entre los abonados y alumnos. Del mismo
modo también se va a celebrar en agosto el II Torneo Academia, abierto para todos los aficionados, con premios como clases en la Academia, sesiones de análisis de swing, bolas, greenfees o noches en el Hotel Almenara. Otra novedad que ofrece la Academia a sus abonados este verano es la apertura del horario nocturno gracias a la perfecta iluminación de la calle de práctica. La jornada diaria es de 8.00 a 21.00 horas pero en los meses de julio y agosto se va a ampliar algunos días hasta las 23.00 horas y según la demanda del público se ampliará más días; e incluso se organizará un torneo nocturno. También está programado para agosto dos clinics de Santiago Luna.
Extensive summer programme at the Sotogrande Golf Academy The Sotogrande Golf Academy, classified as an Andalusian ‘High Performance Centre’, has prepared an intense summer programme for its members and visitors which encompasses learning and improvement programmes for children and adults, as well as various parallel activities such as short-play tournaments, nocturnal opening hours, golf clinics etc. A special programme will be in place in July and August for children of 5 to 15 years of age, adapted to each student’s standard of play and age with practical and theory classes and with lessons on the rules of play. There will
also be a programme for adults consisting of 12 hours of lessons, with the option to attend two hours daily, weekly or monthly, with practical and theory classes and the chance to obtain a handicap and Federation licence. Equally, throughout the summer, the Academy staff, Irene Lara, Manuel Quiñones, Santiago Pineda and Peter Millhouse, will provide visitors with a swing analysis system for players of a certain standard. In a special room the Academy records a video of the swing and carries out a study in order to improve the technique, which the visitor can take away on a CD; the swing can even be compared to those of professional players and its development can be observed. In August they will also hold the 2nd Academia Tournament, open to all amateurs, with prizes such as classes at the Academy, swing-analysis sessions, green fees and nights at Hotel Almenara. Another innovation offered by the Academy to its members this summer is its nocturnal opening hours, thanks to the superb lighting on the practice range. The school is normally open from 8 am to 9 pm, but in the months of July and August the opening hours will be extended on some days until 11 pm, and depending on demand the late opening will be extended to more days, and they may even organise a nocturnal tournament. Santiago Luna’s clinics have also been scheduled for August.

Olazábal diseñará el décimo campo sanroqueño: La Reserva II
La Gerencia Municipal de Urbanismo del Ayuntamiento de San Roque concedió en el mes de febrero pasado la licencia de obras para la construcción de lo que será el décimo campo de golf del municipio: La Reserva II, ubicado en pleno Sotogrande. El campo La Reserva II está respaldado
por Sotogrande SA y contará con la experiencia de los profesionales que ya desarrollan su trabajo en el primer campo de La Reserva. El diseñador del campo es José María Olazábal, que ya está trabajando en el trazado y características del nuevo recorrido.
Olazábal to design San Roque’s tenth course: La Reserva II In February San Roque Municipal Council’s planning authority granted the building permit for the construction of what will be the municipality’s tenth golf course: La Reserva II, located in the heart of Sotogrande. The La Reserva II course will be backed by
Sotogrande S.A. and will benefit from the experience of the professionals who already ply their trade on the first La Reserva course. The designer will be José María Olazábal, who is working on the layout and specifications of the new course.
