ocos puntos cardinales en el mapa son capaces de concentrar la élite de un deporte en apenas unos kilómetros. Muy pocos destinos en el mundo tienen el privilegio de esconder y a la vez mostrar al mundo, los secretos del mejor golf del planeta, con varios de los mejores y más legendarios recorridos de la historia de este deporte en el sur de Europa. Sotogrande tiene muchas valores intrínsecos y éste es uno de los más exportables. En tan sólo unos meses, este rincón del globo ha sido capaz de acoger uno de los formatos deportivos más innovadores del nuevo siglo, como fue el aterrizaje de LIV Golf en el mítico Real Club Valderrama. Adrián, un placer contar contigo en nuestras páginas. Te lo habrán preguntado estos días en multitud de ocasiones, pero no me resisto. ¿Sería increíble repetir triunfo en el EDAM 2023? Sería increíble volver a repetir triunfo en el Estrella DAM Andalucía Masters como lo hice el año pasado por varios motivos. Le tengo muchísimo cariño a esta tierra, tengo muchos tanto en Málaga como en Cádiz: en Guadiaro y en Sotogrande, sería espectacular levantar de nuevo el trofeo. Ya de por sí, jugar en Sotgrande, tanto en el ‘Real’ como en Valderrama es un lujo, noto el cariño y el apoyo de público, te sientes que juegas en casa. Luego, esto es deporte, es golf y cada torneo es un mundo,
en cuatros días pasan muchas todo. Pero de partida, voy con mucha motivación y ganas de darlo todo. Prometo dejarme el corazón.
¿Cómo valoras la temporada hasta el momento? En KLM e Irlanda estuviste cerca del triunfo…
¿Qué supuso esa victoria tan arrolladora en Valderrama y un resultado tan espectacular?
Estoy contento con mi regularidad, sin nada extraordinario pero en líneas generales bien. Aunque como deportista, tenemos ese gen de ambición por ganar y siempre quieres más. Eso me motiva a seguir trabajando y progresando. hacia el futuro. Si que ha habido torneos buenos, pero al final por pequeños detalles no cerré el último día. Dos segundos puestos y un cuarto en Irlanda del Norte…., aún hay margen esta temporada y quedan torneos, eso me permitiría llegar en el ‘Top 20’ de la Race to Dubai.
Emocionante y muy especial. Fue mi primera victoria delante de mi público. También fue mi primer torneo europeo y lo gané en presencia de mis padres, mis amigos; fue increíble compartir con ellos esa semana inolvidable del Estrella Damm. Antes ya le tenía a Valderrama un cariño diferente, es un campo único; fue todo un honor ganar e inscribir mi nombre junto al resto de campeones en el Real Club Valderrama.

Adrián, it is a pleasure to have you among our pages. You will have been asked this several times in recent days, but I cannot resist. Would it be incredible to win again at EDAM 2023? It would be incredible to win again at the Estrella DAM Andalucía Masters as I did last year, for several reasons. I have a lot of affection for this region, I have lots of friends in both Malaga and Cádiz: in Guadiaro and in Sotogrande, it would be spectacular to lift the trophy again. And in itself, playing in Sotogrande, both at “Real” and at Valderrama, is a luxury, I feel the affection and support of the crowd, you feel that you are playing at home. Then, this is sport, golf, and each tournament is a universe, lots happens over four days. But to start, I have

lots of motivation and enthusiasm to give everything. I promise to give everything in my heart.
How do you view the season so far? At the KLM and in Ireland you came very close to victory...
What did that really dominant victory at Valderrama and such a spectacular result mean?
I am happy with my consistency, nothing extraordinary, but generally good. Although, as a sportsperson, we have that ambitious gene to win and you always want more. That motivates me to continue working and progressing towards the future. There have been good tournaments, but in the end I didn’t seal it on the final day due to small details. Two second place finishes and a fourth place in Northern Ireland... Although there is still time this season and tournaments left, that would enable me to make it into the “Top 20” in the Race to Dubai.
It was exciting and very special. It was my first victory in front of my crowd. It was also my first European tournament and I won it in the presence of my parents, my friends; it was incredible to share that incredible week of the Estrella Damm with them. Before, I already had a different kind of affection for Valderrama, it is a unique course; it was a real honour to win and etch my name alongside the other champions at Real Club Valderrama.

¿En el Open también llegaste a disfrutar del momento tan especial? Sí. El British Open, para mí, es el torneo por excelencia y este año jugué bien los primeros días, es un campo que me gusta mucho y lo conocía de haber jugado un torneo amateur. Me sentía bien y adaptado al juego aunque el sábado fue un día difícil, tomé dos o tres decisiones malas que truncaron el torneo y me fastidiaron la vuelta. Al final saqué aprendizaje, lectura positiva y una experiencia muy buena para crecer. Estamos disfrutando de una gran explosión del golf en España: LIV en Valderrama, Solheim Cup en Finca Cortesín, Open de España, …, y ahora Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters en el ‘Real0¡’. ¿Cómo valoras esta gran apuesta y proyección del golf en España? Históricamente, en el extranjero nos ven como un país de golf y un país con historia de golf, con grandes torneos, con grandes campos de golf pero internamiente no nos lo creemos tanto. Con la Solheim Cup en Cortesín, el LIV en Valderrama, el EDAM en Sotogrande o el Open de España, se muestran la selección de torneos de gran nivel y que atraen a varios de los mejores jugadores del mundo. El publico español se

merece grandes torneos para seguir creando afición, para crear cantera y los jóvenes sigan teniendo esos referentes. Como deportista es lo que valoro y lo que me gusta, esa afición permite luego ver a los Jon Rahm, Sergio García y demás, que han llegado a lo más alto. El torneo guarda su esencia y valor histórico a pesar del cambio de escenario, dentro de la misma urbanización de Sotogrande. De una sede tan legendaria como Real Club Valderrama ahora pasa a otro de los campos más emblemáticos de Europa como es el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande ¿qué relación tienes con él? Sí, como decís este año hay un cambio de sede, pasa de un campo legendario como Valderrama a uno de los mejores campos de Europa como es el Real Club de Sotogrande. Tenéis mucha suerte en Sotogrande de tener campos de primer nivel mundial, una meteorología increíble, …, es un lujo jugar en Sotogrande. Tengo buen recuerdo de Real de Sotogrande por haber jugado una copa de Jerez, creo que fue en 2009/20010, me encanta el campo. La última vez que jugué fue hace 5 o 6 años en una vuelta de práctica con Álvaro Quirós y Jordi García del Moral, pero creo que fue antes de los cambios. Estoy con muchas
ganas de ver los cambios, los hoyos nuevos y cómo va a estar todo preparado. ¿Qué sensaciones te transmite el ‘Real’ para tu juego? Es un campo con unas condiciones espectaculares, greenes rápidos y creo que se puede adaptar bien a mi juego. ¿Cuál es su siguiente reto profesional? ¿Pelear por un ‘Major’, buscar un hueco en la Ryder…? BMe gusta estar entrado en el presente, en el proceso del día a día. Tengo a la vista torneos muy ilusionantes como el Open de España o el EDAM, Qatar, Sudáfrica y Dubái; voy a hacer todo lo posible para ganar antes de final de temporada. Cara al futuro, parece que el acuerdo entre circuitos puede dibujar un calendario y una estructura muy atractiva para el futuro, tanto para jugadores como para aficionados, ¿qué le parece? En este sentido los jugadores estamos igual que los espectadores, esperando a ver qué pasa y verlas venir. A mí no me gustan las especulaciones, soy más de hechos.

At the Open you also enjoyed such a special moment? Yes. For me, the British Open is the tournament par excellence and this year I played well in the first few days, on a course that I really like and knew from playing an amateur tournament. I felt good and adapted to play although Saturday was a difficult day, I took two or three bad decisions that ruined the tournament and wrecked the comeback. In the end, I learned from it, I view it positively and it was a very good experience in order to grow.

We are enjoying a great explosion of golf in Spain: LIV at Valderrama, Solheim Cup at Finca Cortesín, the Open de España, …, and now the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters at the ‘Real’. How do you view this great commitment and projection of golf in Spain? History, abroad we are viewed as a golfing country and a country with a golfing history, with great tournaments, great golf courses, but internally we don’t believe it so much. The Solheim Cup at Cortesín, LIV at Valderrama, the EDAM at Sotogrande and the Open de España, show the selection of top level tournaments which attract several of the world’s best players. The Spanish public deserves great tournaments in order to continue creating fans, creating young players and for young people to continue to have those role models. That is what I value and like as a sportsperson, that passion then makes it possible to see players like Jon Rahm, Sergio García, and others, who have reached the highest level.
The tournament maintains its essence and historic value despite the change of scene, within the resort of Sotogrande. From such a legendary venue as Real Club Valderrama, it is now moving to another of the most emblematic courses in Europe, the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, what is your relationship with it?

Yes, as you say, this year there is a change of venue, it is moving from a legendary course like Valderrama to one of the best courses in Europe, Real Club de Sotogrande. You are really lucky in Sotogrande to have to level global courses, incredible weather... It is a luxury to play in Sotogrande. I have good memories from Real de Sotogrande due to playing a Jerez Cup, I think it was in 2009/20010, I love the course. The last time I played it was 5 or 6 years ago in a practice round with Álvaro Quirós and Jordi García del Moral, but I think that was before the changes. I am really looking forward to seeing the changes, the new holes, and how everything is going to be prepared.
What vibes does “Real” give you for your play? It is a course with spectacular conditions, quick greens and I think that it can adapt well to my play.

Sotogrande es uno de los destinos con mejores campos de golf, en calidad, por metro cuadrado, ¿qué referencias tiene de otros campos como La Hacienda o The San Roque Club? Sotogrande es el destino de golf por excelencia en Europa, al margen de Escocia. Llevo viniendo a Sotogrande desde pequeño, he jugado campeonatos en La Cañada, he jugado en el ‘Real’, en San Roque Club, etc. Es más, tengo una anécdota fantástica, ya que pude jugar nueve hoyos con Seve y Enrique Ponce cuando yo tendría 12 o 13 años en The San Roque Club. También he ido mucho a Finca Cortesín, lo dicho, le tengo mucho cariño a todo lo que es la zona de Sotogrande Con
What is your next professional challenge? Fighting for a Major, seeking a place in the Ryder Cup...? I look to be focused on the present, on the day to day process. I am looking ahead to very exciting tournaments like the Open de España and the EDAM, Qatar, South Africa, and Dubai; I am going to do everything possible to win before the end of the season.
Looking to the future, it seems that the agreement between circuits may create a very appealing structure for the future, both for players and for fans, what do you think? In this regard, players are the same as spectators, waiting to see what happens and see what is coming. I don’t like speculation; I am more about facts.

14/15 años, antes de pasar a profesional, solía escaparme en invierno con mis padres a la zona de Sotogrande a entrenar un poco para entrenar con viento, a campos que no estaba acostumbrado en el norte para seguir mejorando mi juego. Es un lugar increíble. Antes de acabar, cuando suelta los palos, ¿cómo le gusta divertirse? ¿Qué planes le gusta hacer?
‘reset’ mental. Para desconectar del golf me gustan mucho las actividades al aire libre y en contacto con la naturaleza: el ciclismo, senderismo y actividades en el mar, kayak, etc.. Mucha suerte en esta nueva edición del EDAM y esperamos verle el 22 de octubre levantando nuevamente el trofeo y brindando con una de esas cervezas.
Creo que una cuestión muy importante durante la temporada y la pretemporada es saber cuándo parar y evitar saturarse. Es muy importante, a veces, pasar una semana o diez días sin tocar un palo y sin saber nada relacionado con el golf para hacer un

Sotogrande is one of the destinations with the best golf courses, in terms of quality, per square metre, what experience do you have from other courses such as La Hacienda and The San Roque Club?
Before finishing, when you put down your clubs, how do you like to have fun? What plans do you like to do?
Sotogrande is the golfing destination par excellence in Europe, aside from Scotland. I have been coming to Sotogrande since I was little, I have played championships at La Cañada, I have played at ‘Real’, at San Roque Club, etc. Furthermore, I have a fantastic anecdote, as I was able to play nine holes with Seve and Enrique Ponce when I was 12 or 13 years old at The San Roque Club. I have also gone a lot to Finca Cortesín, having said that, I have a lot of affection for the entire Sotogrande area. Aged 14/15, before turning professional, I used to go on a winter getaway with my parents to the Sotogrande zone to train a little in order to train with wind, with courses I wasn’t used to playing in order to continue improving my play. It is an incredible place.
I think that a very important issue during the season and pre-season is knowing when to stop and avoid being overwhelmed. It is very important, sometimes, to spend a week or ten days without touching a club and without finding out anything relating to golf in order to reset mentally. In order to switch off from golf, I really like outdoor activities and in contact with nature: cycling, hiking, and activities in the sea, kayaking, etc.
Lots of luck in this new edition of the EDAM and we hope to see you on 22 October once again lifting the trophy and toasting with one of those beers. Un placer y aún más a sólo unos días de uno de los eventos que más interés ha levantado en la comunidad en los últimos meses: Real Club de Golf Sotogrande acoge un evento profesional de primer nivel como es el Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters del DP World. ¿Cómo nace esta oportunidad?
Así es. Al club se le presentó una ocasión extraordinaria para embarcarse en un proyecto y una apuesta de este calibre. Es de sobra conocido el motivo por el que el EDAM deja de celebrarse en Valderrama y rápidamente notamos el interés del DP World Tour por seguir manteniendo uno de sus torneos más importantes en Sotogrande. Sabíamos que competíamos con otras sedes destacadas, pero al notar ese interés comenzamos a valorar internamente
esta gran oportunidad. Es evidente que el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande no tiene esa vocación de organizar eventos de estas características, pero parte de mi gestión es trasladar a la directiva estas oportunidades, valorar sus beneficios a la entidad y evaluar su repercusión. Finalmente decidimos dar un paso al frente y comenzamos a negociar un acuerdo que estoy convencido dará un resultado sobresaliente.
It is a pleasure and even more so just a few days from one of the events that has created most interest in the community over recent months: Real Club de Golf Sotogrande ishosting a first-class professional event, the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters of the DP World Tour. How did this opportunity arise?
Indeed. The club was presented with an extraordinary opportunity to embark on a project and an initiative of this calibre. It is very well-known why the EDAM stopped being held at Valderrama and we quickly noted the interest of the DP World Tour in keeping one of its most important tournaments in Sotogrande. We knew that we were competing with other outstanding venues, but upon noting that interest we began to internally evaluate this great
opportunity. It is clear that Real Club de Golf Sotogrande does not have the vocation of organising events of these characteristics, but part of my management involves informing the management about these opportunities, assessing the benefits for the club and evaluating their impact. In the end, we decided to take a step forward and we began to negotiate an agreement that I am convinced will offer an outstanding result.

Imagino que en el seno del club: junta directiva, socios, equipo,…, la ilusión es enorme por acoger un torneo de estas características… Sin duda. Al principio todos eran algo escépticos, ya que pese a estar la opción sobre la mesa era algo que veíamos lejano. En las últimas semanas, cada vez trabajando más dedicados al evento, hemos visto crecer todo ese entusiasmo en cada uno de los rincones del club. Una ilusión que se está contagiando ahora con el montaje y preparativos del campo en todo el organigrama de la entidad. Estamos emocionados con la llegada de la semana del torneo, una experiencia que viviremos muy intensamente desde todas
las áreas: socios, directiva, equipo y toda la zona. Va a ser una ocasión muy especial y estoy plenamente convencido del éxito del Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters en el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. El club, uno de los más emblemáticos del sur de Europa, está más que preparado para organizar y albergar un torneo de tal magnitud. Hace tan sólo unos años, la rehabilitación integral del recorrido, reforzó la posición del campo en el más alto escalafón en cánones de mantenimiento y calidad.
La decisión de acometer la gran reforma en 2015/2016, con la junta de D. Felipe Oriol, supuso un antes y un después para el club. La entidad se lanzó a una gran inversión, con un proyecto espectacular, que a día de hoy supone uno de los grandes valores del club de cara al futuro. Rediseñar los greenes, recuperar los diseños originales del 1964 y toda la ‘bermuda’, permitieron conseguir el impecable estado actual del campo, preparado para los retos del Siglo XXI, una auténtica joya de golf en Europa. En ese momento ya pudimos ver algunas señales, como la construcción de salidas ‘negras’ o alargar el recorrido hasta los 6.500, de lo que podría venir en un futuro.

The club, one of the most iconic in southern Europe, is more than ready to organise and host a tournament of such magnitude. Just a few years ago, the complete remodelling of the course, strengthened the position of the course at the highest level in terms of maintenance and quality.
The decision to undertake the major revamp in 2015/2016, with the board of Mr. Felipe Oriol, marked a turning point for the club. The entity embarked on a major investment, with a spectacular project, which is currently one of the club’s major assets looking to the future. Redesigning the greens, bringing back the original designs of 1964 and all the bermuda, made it possible to achieve the impeccable current condition of the course, ready for the challenges of the 21st century, a true golfing gem in Europe. At that point we could already see some signs, such as the construction of “black” tees or extending the length of the course to 6,500, of what might come in the future.

Directamente el EDAM conecta con iconos tan importantes como Severiano Ballesteros y aquel Campeonato de España de 1987. ¿Qué supone para institución aparecer en el calendario del DP World Tour? En sus inicios, el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande albergó una importante serie de torneos como el Campeonato de Golf de Profesionales, el Campeonato de España, etc. Existía una predisposición y personalidad vinculada a estos eventos, de menor magnitud que el EDAM, en este caso. Después de muchos años vamos a reencontrarnos con toda esa esencia, con esa filosofía de competición aún más más reforzada que nunca. Vamos a vivir con el EDAM la edición con una mayor cifra histórica de premios en España [3,75 millones de euros]; son muchos los detalles que refuerzan esta gran oportunidad y no hemos dudado en subirnos al tren.

¿Puede adelantarnos algunos detalles sobre la organización y la logística? Entrada del público, accesos, village, etc. La entrada principal estará ubicada en Paseo del Parque, justo antes de la curva del búnker. Se accederá al club a través de una plataforma elevada que conectará con la zona del village, ubicada en el campo corto. Ahí se dispondrá el control de acceso y los asistentes disfrutarán de una espectacular extensión verde con todo el espacio village (restauración, tiendas, marcas, una gran pantalla, etc.); Desde ahí, podrán tomar diferentes direcciones: zona del hoyo 2, casa club, tienda del club, zona de prácticas, etc. El espectacular montaje que estamos preparando permitirá ver imágenes y zonas muy atractivas, junto a los jugadores, y diferentes a otros campos (zona de prácticas, campo corto, etc.). También tendremos espacios de esparcimiento y ocio familiar. Habrá muchas sorpresas y muy atractivas.
Can you announce any of the details about the organisation and logistics? Entry for the public, entrances, village, etc. The main entrance will be located in Paseo del Parque, just before the bend of the bunker. Access to the club will be through a raised platform that will connect with the area of the village, located in the short play area. That will have entry control and those attending will enjoy a spectacular green area with the entire village space (restaurant, shops, brands, a large screen, etc.); From there, they can head in different directions: zone of hole 2, club house, club shop, practice area, etc. The spectacular setup we are preparing will make it possible to see very attractive images and areas, next to the players, and different to other courses (practice area, short play area, etc.). We will also have family recreation and leisure spaces. There will be lots of surprises and they will be very attractive.

Tener la oportunidad de sumar a ese plante de eventos una cuarta cita del DP Wolrd en Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, convierte este curso en inolvidable. No aprovechar esta ola y dejar que el torneo se marche a otro enclave, no nos los hubiésemos perdonado; no sólo por el club, por todo lo que supone para el destino. La exposición es brutal y los beneficios serán enormes no sólo el sector del golf, todo el sector servicios suma enteros, es la naturaleza de un destino de este nivel.

¿El torneo ha llegado para quedarse? Su celebración no cambia nada la filosofía del club, no es nuestra idea convertirnos en una sede de eventos anuales de forma ininterrumpida. Evidentemente, una apuesta por solo un año tiene poco sentido, de momento tenemos dos años firmados y veremos cómo evoluciona. Analizaremos cómo reacciona la comunidad, cómo se recupera el campo, qué ‘feedback’ nos transmiten los socios, valoraremos de cara a futuro todas estas situaciones y estudiaremos qué es lo más óptimo para el club. También es más que evidente la gran visibilidad y marketing que aporta un evento de este nivel
Is the tournament here to stay? Its celebration doesn’t change anything about the club’s philosophy, we don’t intend to become a venue for annual events continuously. Clearly, a commitment for just one year doesn’t make much sense, at the moment we have signed for two years and we will see how it evolves. We will analyse how the community reacts, how the course recovers, what feedback we get from members, we will evaluate all these situations for the future and study what is most optimal for the club. The great visibility and marketing that an event of this level provides is also very clear

Todo esto ocurre tras su llegada a Sotogrande, hace poco más de año y medio, recuerdo nuestra entrevista tras su aterrizaje. ¿Qué tal está siendo todo este proceso? Ya van tres veranos [bromea], no me quites tiempo [sonríe]. Cuando decidí embarcarme en este reto personal y profesional; si un club o un campo está preparado para desafíos de este nivel, sin duda, es el Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. Sinceramente, no pensaba que tan pronto encararíamos un reto tan importante como el Estrella Damm pero este club tiene muchos otros desafíos más allá que un torneo profesional. Este club ofrece todo tipo de situaciones: una gran masa social, comercialización de green fees a visitantes, eventos como el EDAM o incluso organizar cada primavera el torneo más importante a nivel de naciones amateur
All of this is happening after your arrival in Sotogrande, a little over a year and a half ago, I remember your interview after your arrival. How has the entire process been? It has already been three summers (joking), don’t take time away from me (smiles). When I decided to embark on this personal and professional challenge; if a club or a course is prepared for challenges of this level, it is undoubtedly Real Club de Golf Sotogrande. Honestly, I didn’t think that we would face a challenge as important as the Estrella Damm so soon but this club has many other challenges beyond a professional tournament. This club offers all kinds of situations: membership base, marketing of green fees to visitors, events such as the EDAM and each spring it even organises the most important amateur nations tournament

What do we see when we visit a home for the first time? A structure, a set of rooms, the layout of the walls? In that regard, shapes and spaces are essential but if there is a key visual focus in a home then it is the light. In this regard, Manuel Ruiz Moriche and his designs are practically unbeatable. GUSTO ¿Puede percibirse la arquitectura a través del gusto? Quizá no estrictamente a través de nuestras papilas gustativas, aunque sí a través de eso que hemos convenido en llamar “buen gusto”. Petra fue una ciudad en desarrollo hasta su conquista por los romanos a principio del siglo II. En ella podrás: conocer el yacimiento en la Tumba de los Obeliscos, el cual cuenta con numerosas teorías sobre diversas maldiciones, y el Tricliniu de Babi as-Siq, una cámara con tres bancos que se utilizaba para celebrar las fiestas sagradas en honor a los muertos; atravesar el llamado Siq, un cañón

La academia divide el año en tres trimestres, cada uno de 12 semanas de duración y que se ejecutan de acuerdo con el calendario del Colegio Internacional de Sotogrande. TENNIS AND PADEL ACADEMY The Racquet Centre has a team of professional coaches who work with children and adults in a group or individually with quality coaching and in turn getting them to discover the most fun aspects of sport. The academy divides the year into three terms, each lasting for 12 weeks and they are carried out according to the calendar of Sotogrande International School. There are group classes, where children can start playing from the age of 4, with a maximum of six children per class. There are also programmes for adults at the academy and a series of benefits and special rates for tournaments, courts, the bar or shop, among other benefits.

TORNEO JUNIOR DE TENIS Y MIX-IN DE PÁDEL El último domingo de cada mes, (excepto temporada de verano), los jugadores de la academia pueden participar en el ‘Academy Circuit’, un torneo en el que demostrar las habilidades aprendidas mientras se divierten con sus compañeros. Con un total de 16/32 sorteos y sets cortos, en una dinámica y divertida modalidad de juego con premios para los ganadores. Además, si se quiere invitar a algún jugador que no forme parte de la academia también es bienvenido. Para dichas jornadas, el Racquet Centre también organiza un Mix-In de pádel para adultos para que los padres disfruten mientras los niños compiten, con posibilidad de inscripción para jugadores de la academia y visitantes.
Y por supuesto, el acceso para grupos de amigos y familias a alquilar cualquiera de las pistas, las de mejor calidad en el entorno, de lunes a domingo de las 07:00 a 23.00 horas. La mejor opción para relajarse después del trabajo, con un plan deportivo y el clásico ‘post-partido’ con aperitivo en el bar. Sin duda, una de las mejores formas de socializar y crear buenas rutinas es a través del deporte, en este caso el tenis y pádel en el Racquet Centre de La Reserva Club. Mensualmente se celebran Mix-Ins de pádel para que todos los miembros que lo deseen acudan a las instalaciones y disfruten de una agradable jornada. HOLLYWOOD VA A LA HUELGA H OLLYWOOD GOES ON STR IKE A principios de mayo fueron los guionistas, y este verano le tocó el turno a los actores. La histórica huelga conjunta ha puesto en jaque tanto al sistema de estudios como a la producción audiovisual de las plataformas, y numerosas películas y series de renombre han visto postergados sus rodajes y fechas de estreno. Por si fuera poco, el paro también ha afectado a numerosos shows televisivos tales como los late night más famosos y el legendario programa de humor Saturday Night Live. Repasamos las claves y cuáles son algunas de las producciones de postín afectadas por la huelga.
It was the scriptwriters at the start of May, and this summer it was the turn of the actors. The historic strike has challenged both the studio system and the audiovisual production of platforms, and several films and renowned series have had their shoots and release dates delayed. Hasta ahora se podía calcular de forma sencilla, acudiendo a las cifras de venta de formatos domésticos y pases en televisión, pero con el uso de las plataformas de streaming todo ha cambiado. Dos meses después, en julio, a la lucha se unieron los intérpretes vía el SAG-AFTRA, sindicato que reúne a 160.000 actores de la industria del entretenimiento, con similares pretensiones. Es la primera vez en 60 años que se produce esta unión de guionistas y actores, calculando unas pérdidas diarias de unos 30 millones de dólares para las patronales hollywoodienses.

The claim: improved working conditions through a review of contracts after the paradigm shift entailed by the arrival of platforms and new technologies, especially in relation to the emergence of Artificial Intelligence in the business. One of the main calls is regarding what is known as residuals, the money that scriptwriters receive for rights after a work is shown in cinemas. Until now, it was easy to calculate, using the sales figures of domestic formats and times shown on television but everything has changed with the use of streaming platforms. Two months later, in July, actors joined the battle through SAG-AFTRA, the union that brings together 160,000 actors from the entertainment industry, with similar aims. It is the first time in 60 years that this union of scriptwriters and actors has occurred, with daily losses for the management of Hollywood calculated to be 30 million dollars.

Así, podrían verse retrasados proyectos ya comenzados como Deadpool 3, 3 la tercera entrega de la saga que iba a juntar al irreverente antihéroe protagonizado por Ryan Reynolds con el Lobezno de Hugh Jackman. Su estreno está previsto para mayo de 2024, pero podría verse retrasado por la huelga; Beetlejuice 2, 2 la secuela de la mítica película protagonizada por Michael Keaton que vuelve a dirigir Tim Burton y que también podría sufrir retrasos en su fecha de estreno; la adaptación cinematográfica del musical de teatro Wicked Wicked, protagonizada por Ariana Grande y Cynthia Erivo y que se ha estado rodando estos últimos meses en el Reino Unido o la propia Gladiator 2, 2 que dirige Ridley Scott en Europa con Paul Mescal y Denzel Washington. El motivo es que, a pesar de contar con sus guiones antes de la huelga y estar casi en su totalidad rodadas, podría ser necesaria la presencia de sus actores para hacer reshoots (escenas regrabadas) o actos promocionales, también prohibidos mientras dure el paro. De hecho, la huelga también afecta a las campañas de promoción tan necesarias para el buen funcionamiento en taquilla de un film: en este sentido se vieron afectadas producciones de reciente estreno como Haunted Mansion, de Disney; la nueva versión de Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Tortugas Ninja) o A Haunting In Venice, Venice la tercera y terrorífica entrega de las investigaciones de Hercules Poirot a cargo de Kenneth Brannagh. En cuanto a las producciones que se han visto obligadas a posponer sus rodajes, algunas son de la importancia de Blade, nueva aproximación al cazavampiros de Marvel Blade protagonizada por el oscarizado Mahershala Ali cuyo inicio planificado de filmación era junio de 2023 y ha quedado postergado a la finalización de la huelga; Community: The Movie, Movie continuación en formato largometraje de la desternillante serie creada por Dan Harmon; Thunderbolts Thunderbolts, también basada en personajes de Marvel, al igual que la secuela, aún sin título, de Spider-Man: No Way Home, Home en la que Tom Holland volverá (si todo se soluciona) a enfundarse el traje arácnido. También ha quedado pospuesta de manera indefinida la tercera entrega de Sonic The Hedgedog, Hedgedog en la que volvía a participar Jim Carrey (furibundo defensor de la huelga) como villano. ¿Y qué pasa con la televisión? Lugares quizá más escondidos y precisamente por eso tan apreciados, convertidos en destino gastronómico en sí mismos. Cocinas de kilómetro cero por definición, donde las ollas se ponen al fuego puerta con puerta con los productores que traen las materias primas. La gastronomía de nuestras sierras, con sus recetas contundentes, tradicionales, auténticas, autóctonas, pero también con su espíritu innovador. Aquí cabe desde el plato de la abuela a la comida fusión o la alta cocina. Son muchos

Places that are perhaps a little more hidden and that is precisely why there are so valued and have become a gastronomic destination in themselves. Kilometre zero kitchens by definition, where the stoves are right next door to the producers who supply the raw ingredients. The gastronomy of our mountains, with their compelling, traditional, authentic, local, but also with their innovative spirit. Here, there is room for everything from traditional dishes to fusion food and haute cuisine. There are many

Cazorla
Comenzando en la provincia de Jaén, Cazorla es una de las sierras andaluzas por excelencia. Sus más de mil kilómetros cuadrados incluyen un parque natural y una rica agricultura basada sobre todo en el olivar. En Cazorla encontramos restaurantes de toda la vida como Don Chema, un mesón familiar que ofrece desde los
años 70 recetas tradicionales como la carne de monte, los huevos a la cazorleña o el paté de perdiz. Otro ejemplo es el Restaurante Alberto, famoso por sus asados, sus arroces o sus gachamigas serranas, una receta típica, habitual comida de pastores, a base de patata, harina, aceite y agua. Junto a ellos también hay opciones modernas y originales como Macorina, un espacio gastronómico que aúna la cocina andaluza y gallega con la asiática y nikkei. O el Restaurante & Bistró Casa Alfonso X, mencionado en la Guía Michelin por propuestas originales como el pulpo a la brasa con calabaza, los nidos de alcachofa con perdiz escabechada y vieira, el carpaccio de ciervo o de cigala o el AOVE en texturas.

CA Z O R L A
Starting in the province of Jaén, Cazorla is one of the Andalusian sierras par excellence. Its more than one thousand square kilometres include a natural park and rich agriculture based on olive trees above all. Cazorla is home to classic restaurants such as Don Chema, a family run inn that has been offering traditional recipes such as mountain meet, Cazorla
style eggs and partridge pâté. Another example is Restaurante Alberto, famous for its barbecues, its rice dishes and its mountain gachamigas, a typical recipe, a common meal for shepherds, made from potato, flour, oil, and water. Along with them, there are also modern and original options such as Macorina, a gastronomic space that combines Andalusian and Galician cuisine with Asian and Japanese food. Or Restaurante & Bistró Casa Alfonso X, mentioned in the Michelin Guide for original proposals such as grilled octopus with pumpkin, artichoke nests with marinated pigeon and scallop, carpaccio of venison and prawn and textured EVOO.

Alcornocales y Grazalema
En las sierras de Cádiz, comenzando por el norte, llegamos a la sierra de Grazalema. Allí entre sus relieves abruptos encontramos tesoros como el restaurante familiar Casa Martín 1920, con cien años de historia. Un lugar donde probar buenos vinos, quesos artesanos, chacinas y jamón ibérico, acompañados de delicias como el atún ahumado, las sardinas anchoadas o la morcilla de Grazalema con manteca “colorá”. Si se quiere tapear una buena apuesta es La Maroma. Con una decoración inspirada en la tradición del Toro de Cuerda, ofrece croquetas caseras, serranitos de venao o cazuelas de patata que ellos llaman “nidos de cuerda”. Otro clásico de la zona es el restaurante Cádiz El Chico y su plato estrella: el cordero, que preparan en chuletitas y también en patas al horno. Entre los postres destaca su tarta de bellotas, una receta propia. Ya más pegados a la costa, la sierra de los Alcornocales ofrece a sus visitantes opciones igualmente deliciosas como El Campanero, con su parrilla de carbón, El Ventorrillero, especializado en setas, o El Aljibe, un restaurante de inspiración árabe instalado en una antigua casa restaurada del siglo XIII.
Aracena y picos de Aroche
En la zona occidental de Sierra Morena, entre amplias dehesas de encinas y alcornoques, la Sierra de Aracena es un maravillo territorio por descubrir y degustar con un protagonista claro: el cerdo ibérico. Entre sus restaurantes destaca Jesús Carrión que, además de chacinas, carnes ibéricas y jamones 5J, propone platos versionados como el ajoblanco con vieira, el risotto de boletus o el tataki de atún con ensalada de algas. Una propuesta premiada con un Solete Repsol.

A LC O R N O CA L E S AND GRAZALEMA In the mountains of Cadiz, beginning in the north, we reach the mountain of Grazalema. There, among its steep slopes we find treasures such as the family restaurant Casa Martín 1920, with one hundred years of history. A place where it is possible to try good wines, handmade cheeses, cold meats and Iberian ham, accompanied by delicacies such as smoked tuna, anchovy style sardines and the black pudding of Grazalema with colorá (coloured) lard. If you want to go for tapas, a good option is La Maroma. With décor inspired by the tradition of the Toro de Cuerda (Bull on a Rope), it offers homemade croquettes, venison sandwiches and potato casseroles which they call “rope nests.” Another classic in the area is the restaurant Cádiz El Chico and its star dish: lamb, which they prepare in chops and also in roast legs. Among the desserts, the acorn tart stands out, a recipe of their own. Closer to the coast, the Sierra de los Alcornocales offers its visitors equally delicious options such as El Campanero, with its charcoal grill, El Ventorrillero,
muffins of aubergine with cane honey, strawberry gazpacho with smoked sardines and signature pâté with a marmalade of spicy strawberries.

SIERRA NORTE DE SEVILLA
In the western area of Sierra Morena, between large meadows of holm oaks and cork oaks, the Sierra de Aracena is a wonderful territory to discover and enjoy with a clear star: Iberian pork. Its restaurants notably include Jesús Carrión which, in addition to cold meats, Iberian meats and 5J hams, offers versions of classic dishes such as ajoblanco with scallop, risotto with mushroom and tuna tataki with seaweed salad. A proposal that has earned a Repsol Sun. Another big name, Juan Hormigo, offers the chance to eat inside a ham curing room. Alongside products deriving from Iberian port, you should not miss out on the seasoned chickpeas, pringá croquettes and steak with chestnuts . With another Repsol Sun, the restaurant Essentia also stands out in the Huelva mountains, blending traditional and creative cuisine. The result: carpaccios and tartare of Iberian pork shoulder,

Travelling to the northern province of Seville, we discover another mountain area that is not very steep, crossed by rivers that flow into the Guadalquivir. To eat around here, ask about El Cortijo Vistalegre and order dishes such as the meat or mushroom patés, the white gazpacho with Cazalla and aubergine stuffed with beef. Another excellent choice is Restaurante Agustina, recognised in the Michelin Guide in the Bib Gourmand category. Its menu changes every three months and it plays with appetising suggestions such as strips of pork shoulder on layer cheese and oxtail cannelloni. To complete the range of gastronomy, remember this other name: Batán de las Monjas. A wonderful restaurant, located inside a camp site, whose cuisine combines stews and traditional old recipes with cutting-edge touches. Above all, their meats stand out, including their lamb which they breed themselves.

Otro nombre propio, Juan Hormigo, ofrece la posibilidad de comer dentro de un secadero de jamones. Junto a los derivados del cerdo ibérico, no hay que perderse sus garbanzos aliñados, sus croquetas de pringá o su solomillo con castañas. Con otro Solete Repsol, destaca también en la sierra onubense Essentia, restaurante que fusiona cocina tradicional y creativa. El resultado: carpaccios y tartar de presa ibérica, magdalenas de berenjena con miel de caña, gazpacho de fresas con sardinas ahumadas o paté de autor con mermelada de fresas picantes.
Otra excelente elección es el Restaurante Agustina, reconocido por la Guía Michelin en la categoría de Bib Gourmand. Su carta cambia cada tres meses y juega con apetecibles sugerencias como las tiras de presa sobre queso de hoja o los canelones de rabo de toro. Para completar el abanico gastronómico, recuerden este otro nombre: Batán de las Monjas. Maravilloso restaurante, ubicado en el interior de un camping, cuya cocina combina guisos y recetas de la abuela con toques vanguardistas. Destacan sobre todo sus carnes, entre ellas, su cordero de crianza propia.
Sierra Norte de Sevilla
Subbética cordobesa Alpujarras de Granada y Almería
De viaje a la comarca norte de Sevilla, descubrimos otra zona serrana no muy escarpada, atravesada de ríos que vierten sus aguas al Guadalquivir. Para comer por aquí pueden preguntar por El Cortijo Vistalegre y pedir platos como los patés de carne o de setas, el gazpacho blanco de cazalla o la berenjena rellena de ternera.

Al sur de Córdoba, en pleno centro geográfico de Andalucía, las tradicionales matanzas caseras marcan la gastronomía local basada en derivados como el chorizo o la morcilla, pero también en sus excelentes vinos bajo la denominación Montilla-Moriles. Entre sus muchas opciones para comer destacamos Tres Culturas, un restaurante que aúna tres tradiciones culinarias: judía, árabe y cristiana dando lugar a sabrosos platos como las berenjenas sefardíes, el revuelto
mozárabe o la pastela de rabo de toro al estilo sefardí. Construido sobre un antiguo Convento de Carmelitos Descalzos, encontramos también el Mesón Puerta del Convento con sus famosos revueltos de bacalao, su rabo de toro y sus alcachofas con foie. Los que busquen un estilo más urbano pueden pasarse por Al Punto, una creativa hamburguesería en plena sierra especializada en hamburguesas y tacos artesanales hechos con pan casero, elaborado con masa madre y harinas molidas a la piedra.
La Alpujarra es una región histórica dividida entre las provincias de Granada y Almería, su nombre deriva del árabe -al Busherat- que significa “tierra de hierba”. Por eso su gastronomía, además de productos agrícolas y ganaderos, se basa en las abundantes plantas comestibles de la zona.

S U B B E T I CA O F C O R D O B A To the south of Cordoba, in the geographic heart of Andalusian, traditional home slaughters define local gastronomy based on derived products such as chorizo and black puddings, but also the excellent Montilla-Moriles denomination wines. Among the many options for eating, we would highlight Tres Culturas, a restaurant that combines three culinary traditions: Jewish, Arabic and Christian, resulting in delicious dishes such as Sephardic aubergines, Mozarab scrambled eggs and the Sephardic style oxtail pie. Built on a former Convent of Barefoot Carmelites, we also find the Mesón Puerta del Convento, with its famous scrambled eggs with cod, its oxtail and its artichokes with foie. Those seeking a more urban style can visit Al Punto, a creative hamburger restaurant in the heart of the mountain specialising in burgers and artisanal tacos made with homemade bread, using sourdough and stone-ground flours.

En la parte de Granada hay lugares imprescindibles como el Mesón del Jamón, donde probar platos locales como las migas o el plato alpujarreño a base de huevo frito, jamón, longaniza, morcilla, lomo de cerdo en adobo y patatas a lo pobre. En la misma línea, el Restaurante Teide dispone de platos autóctonos como la ensalada alpujarreña –con tomate, lechuga, cebolla, jamón serrano, queso, huevo cocido y nueces-, la sopa alpujarreña -con almendra tostada, ajo, pan tostado, azafrán y huevo- o la pierna de cordero al estilo Alpujarreño con verduras, tomillo, orégano y patatas a lo pobre. Para paladares más creativos, una alternativa es El Corral del Castaño, con toques originales como el tataki de salmorejo o los piononos de rabo de toro. Ya en las Alpujarras almerienses, hay que mencionar el Restaurante Abad y sus más de 30 variedades de croquetas, incluidas croquetas dulces como la de chocolate o la de torrija. También destaca el Café bar Patry, una antigua hospedería cuya especialidad es servir prácticamente todo en formato tapa: secreto, costillas, revueltos de setas, migas. También en pequeñas raciones se pueden degustar platos típicos como la olla de trigo –un potaje de carne

de cerdo, garbanzos, hinojo y trigo- y las patatas al ajopollo –otro plato de cuchara con la patata como base-.

Sierra de las Nieves y Serranía de Ronda
Por último, no podemos bajarnos de la sierra sin dar un paseo por la cercana Serranía de Ronda, famosísima por su gastronomía y por sus vinos con Denominación de Origen. Algunas de sus propuestas culinarias son el Restaurante Audalazar, donde probar desde gazpacho caliente, magret de pato al Oporto, crepe de foie con frutos rojos o puntas de solomillo rellenas; la Venta Valdivia, también con un Solete gracias a su especialidad -el conejo-; y por supuesto Bardal. Emblema Michelin de la provincia de Málaga con dos merecidas estrellas, su chef Benito Gómez pone todo su talento al servicio de seleccionadas materias primas de la zona. Higo en escabeche de higuera, tarta helada de setas, picaña a la pimienta verde, cogollo a la brasa con emulsión de vaca, emblanco de calabacines y almendras tiernas son solo algunas de sus delicatesen. Tan diverso y completo es el menú de nuestras sierras que uno puede acabar incluso comiendo en un Estrella Michelin.
Acabamos la ruta en Málaga donde el flamante nuevo Parque Nacional Sierra de las Nieves nos da la posibilidad de adentrarnos en un bellísimo paisaje de montaña aderezado con una rica gastronomía. Restaurantes como el Mirador Sierra de las Nieves conservan en sus fogones la tradición de la cocina malagueña con generosas raciones de asados, guisos y carnes a la brasa. O también la Antigua Venta de San Antonio, con sus platos de gazpacho, ajoblanco, lomo de ciervo macerado en aceite o chivo lechal. La Bodega El Porfín es otra recomendación de las buenas, un lugar donde disfrutar del auténtico vino mosto yunquerano acompañado de recetas contundentes como el chivo

In the Alpujarra of Almería, it is necessary to mention Restaurante Abad and its over 30 varieties of croquettes, including sweet croquettes like chocolate and torrija. Also notable is Café bar Patry, a former inn whose speciality is serving practically everything in tapas format: Iberian pork (secreto) cut, ribs, scrambled egg with mushrooms, migas (crumbs). Also in small portions it is possible to enjoy typical dishes such as the olla de trigo -a pork stew, chickpeas, fennel and wheat- and garlic chicken potatoes -another spoon dish with potato as the main ingredient-.

We end the route in Malaga where the new National Park Sierra de las Nieves offers us the chance to delve into an extremely beautiful mountain landscape seasoned with delicious gastronomy. Restaurants such as the Mirador Sierra de las Nieves maintain the tradition of Malaga cuisine in their kitchens with generous portions of barbecue, stews, and grilled meats. And also the Antigua Venta de San Antonio, with its dishes of gazpacho, ajoblanco, loin of venison marinated in oil and suckling goat.
Bodega El Porfín is another good recommendation, a place to enjoy authentic grape juice wine of Yunquera accompanied by stunning recipes such as goat stew, meat in sauce and cod casserole. All cooked in the chimney. Lastly, we cannot leave the mountain without taking a walk around the nearby Serranía de Ronda, very famous for its gastronomy and its Denomination of Origin wines. Some of its culinary proposals are Restaurante Audalazar, where you can enjoy everything from hot gazpacho, duck magret cooked in Port wine, foie crepe with red berries and stuffed sirloin fillets; the Venta Valdivia, also holder of a Sun thanks to its speciality -rabbit-; and of course Bardal. The Michelin icon of the province of Malaga with its two welldeserved stars, its chef Benito Gómez puts all his talent oat the service of select raw ingredients from the area. Fig in a fig tree pickle, iced mushroom tart, picanha steak with green pepper, grilled artichoke heart with a beef emulsion, emblanco (soup) with courgette and tender almonds are just some of its delicacies. The menu of our mountains is so diverse and complete that you can even end up eating in a Michelin Star restaurant.
The Alpujarra is an historic region divided between the provinces of Granada and Almería, its name derives from the Arabic -al Busherat- which means “land of pasture”. Therefore its gastronomy, as well as agricultural and livestock products, is based on the abundant edible plants of the area. In the Granada part, there are essential places such as the Mesón del Jamón, where you can try local dishes such as migas (crumbs) or the Alpujarra dish made from fried egg, ham, sausage, black pudding, marinated pork loin and poor man’s potatoes (patatas a lo pobre). In the same vein, Restaurante Teide has local dishes such as Alpujarra salad -with tomato, lettuce, onion, serrano ham, cheese, boiled egg and nuts-, Alpujarra soup -with toasted almond, garlic, toasted bread, saffron and eggand leg of lamb cooked in the Alpujarra style with vegetables, thyme, oregano, and poor man’s potatoes (patatas a lo pobre). For more creative palates, an alternative is El Corral del Castaño, with original touches such as salmorejo tataki and the oxtail piononos.

En el aperitivo
El término aperitivo deriva del latín ‘aperitivus’ que a su vez viene del clásico ‘aperire’, cuyo significado era ‘abrir’. De ahí que griegos y romanos lo tomasen para “abrir el apetito”. Hay que decir que en sus orígenes, ‘aperitivus’ se refería solamente a la bebida, precisamente a un tipo de vino dulce aromatizado con hierbas. El concepto de la comida, ese picoteo previo que antecede al almuerzo, se incorporó después. Hoy la tradición del aperitivo se mantiene muy viva en países como Italia, pero también en España, asociada a la copa de vermut o de vino. Para tomar el aperitivo se aconseja elegir una variedad que no sea demasiado fuerte, que no resulte pesada al beber.
At the aperitif The term aperitif derives from the Latin ‘aperitivus’ which in turn comes from the classical ‘aperire’, whose meaning was ‘to open’. Hence why the Greeks and Romans had it to “open up their appetite.” It should be said that originally, ‘aperitivus’ only referred to the drink, to be precise, a kind of sweet wine flavoured with herbs. After an intense and unforgettable season, the tenth edition of the Sotogrande Golf Circuit is reaching the decisive stretch, after holding five exciting qualifying events, with the Grand Finale on 15 November at Real Club Valderrama.
Un año para no olvidar. El X Circuito de Golf Sotogrande llega a su final, con el colofón de pruebas puntuables del calendario regular, y pone la mirada en la celebración y disputa de su Gran Final, el próximo 15 de noviembre en el legendario y mítico Real Club Valderrama. Una cita para campeones, un total de 19 clasificados (cupo establecido según el reglamento vigente); que vivirán una jornada de golf para el recuerdo y una experiencia de grandes profesionales de golf.

Desde luego que se practicaban otros, pero estos cuatro eran, además, el eje de una intensa actividad aglutinadora y social, casi familiar, pues eran el punto de encuentro en un Sotogrande incipiente en el que todos nos conocíamos y divertíamos juntos.
Until the start of the 80’s sporting activity in Sotogrande was particularly structured around four sports: Golf, Polo, Tennis and Frontón. Of course there were other sports, but these four were, in addition to the focus of intense activity bring people together and socialising, almost familiar, as they were the meeting point in a fledgling Sotogrande where everyone knew one another and had fun together.

Of those four activities, two remain big stars, golf and polo; tennis has given way to similar disciplines such as padel and pickleball and one of the, perhaps the most original is threatened with disappearance, frontón or “Philippine ball” which is the variety we play in Sotogrande. As a tribute and through the desire to defend this sport, which hundreds of residents and friends play with true passion, I am writing this article summarising its now 50 years of continuous history of the chronicle of Sotogrande.
History
Bola f ilipina De esas cuatro actividades, dos siguen siendo grandes protagonistas, el golf y el polo; el tenis ha cedido espacio a disciplinas similares como el paddle o el pickleball y una de ellas, quizá la más original, amenaza con desaparecer: el frontón o bola filipina, que es la variedad del mismo que practicamos en Sotogrande. Como homenaje y voluntad de defensa de este deporte, que aún cientos de residentes y amigos practicamos con verdadera pasión, escribo este artículo resumiendo sus ya 50 años de historia ininterrumpida y vertebral de la crónica de Sotogrande.
Since its beginnings in the mid 60’s, Sotogrande was equipped with sporting and leisure facilities at the highest level. The design of its two first golf courses, Sotogrande and Las Aves, now Valderrama, was commissioned to Robert Trent Jones. Two magnificent polo pitches were built, one next to the cortijo of Paniagua and another that was unique worldwide due to its location on the seashore. Hotel Tenis, now Encinar de Sotogrande housed a large number of tennis courts. And next to the legendary beach club of El Cucurucho, now the Trocadero, the developers of Sotogrande, with the advice of the Basque businessperson Ángel Berazadi (sadly murdered by ETA), they decided to build four frontón courts. At the cortijo of Paniagua, then the nerve centre of Sotogrande, a fifth court was installed. We can undoubtedly affirm that the immerse offer of sport at present in Sotogrande has its origins 50 years ago in these four disciplines.
La historia Desde sus comienzos a mediados de los 60, Sotogrande fue dotado de instalaciones deportivas y de ocio al más alto nivel. El diseño de sus dos primeros campos de golf, Sotogrande y Las Aves -hoy Valderrama- fue encargado a Robert Trent Jones. Se construyeron dos magníficas canchas de polo, una junto al cortijo de Paniagua y otra única en el mundo por su ubicación al borde mismo del mar. El Hotel Tenis, hoy Encinar de Sotogrande albergaba un buen número de pistas de tenis. Y junto al mítico club de playa del Cucurucho, hoy el Trocadero, los promotores de Sotogrande, con el asesoramiento del empresario vasco Ángel Berazadi (tristemente asesinado por ETA), decidieron construir cuatro canchas de frontón. En el cortijo de Paniagua, centro neurálgico del Sotogrande de entonces, se ubicó una quinta cancha. Podemos sin duda afirmar que la inmensa oferta deportiva actual de Sotogrande tiene sus orígenes hace 50 años en estas cuatro disciplinas.

El origen
“El Juli”, que sigue en forma y jugando al frontón con mucho “temple”.
El frontón es un juego de pelota de origen ancestral, muy popular en el País Vasco que ha sido disciplina olímpica en México 1968 y Barcelona 1992.
A partir del verano de 1976 y durante 10 años se celebró en agosto un campeonato de frontón In Memoriam de Ángel Berazadi, auspiciado por su familia y Sotogrande SA. Tenía tres categorías: dobles masculino, dobles femenino y mixtos. En cada categoría habían 32 parejas inscritas y Kike Berazadi junto con Richard Denman de Financiera SG, nombraban los cabezas de serie y hacían el sorteo de los enfrentamientos. Eran cuadros eliminatorios, con partidos a tres sets y cuadro de consolación para los que perdían en el primer envite. La familia Berazadi y el director de Sotogrande hacían la entrega de trofeos en las pistas a la conclusión del partido. Las finales eran tal acontecimiento que se buscaba una fecha que no interfiriese con otros eventos de relevancia en la urbanización, como la popular Gymkhana, partidos de polo o algún torneo de golf.
Fueron los vascos que emigraron a Filipinas los que lo llevaron a varias ciudades del archipiélago y lo popularizaron en éste país. A finales del siglo XIX, Filipinas pasa a ser una colonia de Estados Unidos. Es en este intercambio intercultural hispanoamericano cuando surge el germen de una modalidad deportiva única. Fue Rafael Pintado ”Piling” Toda, hermano del expresidente de Philippine Airlines y gran aficionado a los deportes de raqueta quien lo ideó. Piling disponía de un garaje sin utilizar en el que no cabía una pista de frontón al uso y decidió hacer una cancha de dimensiones más reducidas para jugar con sus amigos, entre los que estaban Vince Revilla y algunos miembros de la familia Zóbel. Aquello resultó tan divertido, que decidieron construir tres pistas en el Manila Polo Club y posteriormente otras dos en el Club Filipino.
Nacía así un nuevo juego, híbrido entre el Jai Alai y el racketball al que allí llamaron simplemente “pelota”. Las canchas de “pelota”, son una copia de los frontones del norte de España pero de dimensiones más reducidas y que se juega con las mismas raquetas y pelotas del racketball. Los promotores de Sotogrande, conscientes de la potencialidad de este nuevo juego lo trajeron a Sotogrande con enorme éxito. Desde sus comienzos, los residentes denominaron a este deporte “bola filipina”.
Los Campeonatos La “bola filipina” o frontón en Sotogrande vivió sus mejores años desde sus comienzos en 1973, hasta finales de los 90. Los partidos de aficionados comenzaban a primera hora de la mañana y se prolongaban hasta bien entrada la noche, gracias a la iluminación de dos de las pistas. Por estas canchas pasaban todos los residentes del Sotogrande de la época, empresarios, empleados, jugadores de golf y polo… desde los más jóvenes (yo tenía entonces 9 años) hasta los más mayores, todos disfrutaron jugando a este divertidísimo y original deporte. En los partidos te podías cruzar con gente de lo más variopinto, desde campeones de la Fórmula 1 como Emerson Fittipaldi, que destacó por su competitividad y estado físico envidiable o más recientemente con maestros del toreo como

A partir de 1986, la familia Médem, tomó el relevo en la organización del torneo de frontón del verano. Inicialmente fue Ricardo padre -muy conocido por su actividad cinegética y gran aficionado a otros deportes- quien organizó el Máster de Frontón de Sotogrande durante muchos años, hasta que problemas de salud le retiraron de las pistas. Se introdujeron en esta época dos nuevas categorías, la de menores de 16 años y el individual masculino. Sus hijos Ricki durante algunos veranos y Gonzalo unos años después, han mantenido viva la llama de los torneos de frontón hasta nuestros días. Durante nada menos que 50 años, han sido muchos los ganadores y ganadoras de los torneos de verano y resulta imposible mencionarlos a todos. Pero es imprescindible reconocer a Miguel Preysler como el primer gran maestro del frontón en Sotogrande y figura absolutamente imbatible cuando hacía equipo con su hermano Fausto, un jugador de otra galaxia. Arturo Melián, siempre tan perfeccionista, nos enseñó a jugar con estilo y a mover la bola por todos los rincones de la pista. Destacamos a dos jugadores zurdos, Marco Azpiazu y Gonzalo Sobrino, que obligaban a cambiar la estrategia de juego para sacarles de la pared lateral donde siempre tenían las de ganar. En el puesto de delantero hay tres nombres propios que merece recordar: José María Olbés, Juan Villar Mir e Iñigo Lapetra, tres estilos diferentes, pero con la posición más difícil de mantener en un partido, el de delantero, mucho más técnico que el de zaguero que es más físico. Si hay alguien capaz de “descoser” la bola en cada raquetazo, ese era Ricki Médem, su velocidad de impacto solo es superada por los jugadores de trinquete. No se nos pueden olvidar los miembros del clan Martiarena: Borja, Pablo, Bosco y Cosme, que aquí mencionamos por orden de edad y dejamos el escalafón deportivo para que lo discutan en familia.

The origin Frontón is a ball game of ancestral origin, very popular in the Basque Country, which was an Olympic discipline in Mexico 1968 and Barcelona 1992. It was the Basques who emigrated to the Philippines who took it to several cities on the archipelago and popularised it in this country. At the end of the 19th century, the Philippines became a colony of the United States. It was in this HispanoAmerican intercultural exchange when the seed of a unique sporting discipline emerged. It was Rafael Pintado “Piling” Toda, brother of the former president of Philippine Airlines and a great sports fan who came up with it. Piling had an unused garage which did not have room for a typical frontón court and he decided to create a smaller court to play with his friends, including Vince Revilla and some members of the Zóbel family. That was so fun, that they decided to build three courts at Manila Polo Club and subsequently another two at Club Filipino.
Thus, a new game was born, a hybrid between between Jai Alai and racketball which they simply called “ball”. “ball”. The “ball” courts are a copy of the frontón courts in northern Spain but a smaller size and it is played with the same rackets and balls as racketball. The developers of Sotogrande, aware of the potential of this new game brought it to Sotogrande with enormous success. From the outset, residents called this sport “Philippine ball”.
The Championships “Philippine ball” or frontón in Sotogrande enjoyed its best years from its beginnings in 1973, until the end of the 90’s. The matches of enthusiasts begin first thing in the morning and ran until late at night, thanks to lighting of two of the courts. All the residents of Sotogrande at the time passed through these courts, businesspeople, employees, golf and polo players…from the youngest (I was 9 at the time) to the oldest, everyone enjoyed this very fun and original sport. At matches you could come across all kinds of people, from Formula 1 champions such as Emerson Fittipaldi, who stood out for his competitiveness and enviable physical fitness to more recently with bullfighting maestros such as “El Juli” who remains fit and plays frontón with a lot of “courage”.
From the summer of 1976 and for 10 years, a frontón championship was held in August in memory of Ángel Berazadi, sponsored by his family and Sotogrande SA. There were three categories: men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed. There were 32 pairings registered in each category and Kike Berazadi along with Richard Denman of Financiera SG, named the leaders of the series and did the draw for the matches. There were playoffs, with three set matches and a consolation playoff for those who lost the first match. The Berazadi family and the head of Sotogrande presented the trophies on the courts at the end of the match. The finals were such an event that a date was sought that did not interfere with other important events in the resort, such as the popular Gmykhana, polo matches and the odd golf tournament. From 1986 on, the Médem family, took over the organisation of the frontón tournament in summer. Initially, it was Ricardo senior -very well-known for his hunting activity and a great fan of other sports- who organised the Frontón Master tournament in Sotogrande for many years, until health problems took him away from the courts. Two new categories were introduced in this period, the under-16’s and the men’s singles. His children, Ricki for a few summers and Gonzalo a few years later, have kept the flame of the frontón tournaments burning until the present day. Over no fewer than 50 years, there have been many winners of the summer tournament and it is impossible to mention them all. However, it is essential to acknowledge Miguel Preysler as the first great maestro of frontón in Sotogrande and an absolutely unbeatable player when he teamed up with his brother Fausto, a player from another galaxy. Arturo Melián, always such a perfectionist taught us to play with style and to move the ball all over the court. We want to highlight two left-handed players, Marco Azpiazu and Gonzalo Sobrino, who made it necessary to change playing strategy in order to get them away from the side wall where they were always likely to win. In the front role there are three big names worth remembering: José María Olbés, Juan Villar Mir and Iñigo Lapetra, three different styles, but with the most difficult position to maintain in a match, at the front, much more technical than the defender which is more physical. If there is someone capable of “unravelling” the ball with every big racket hit, it was Ricki Médem, his striking impact was only surpassed by pelota players. We cannot forget about the members of the Martiarena clan: Borja, Pablo, Bosco y Cosme, who we are mentioning here by order of age and we will leave the family to discuss the sporting ranking.

En categoría femenina destacaron las Melián: Victoria, Ginia, Sylvia y Cecilia, por su buen juego y elegancia en pista. No olvidemos a Amparo Preysler, que jugaba con cierta ventaja ya que había entrenado con anterioridad en Manila y cuya amabilidad y sonrisa eternas no restaban un ápice a su fiera competitividad en pista. María Eugenia Médem y María Waconigg batieron todos los récords de victorias en sus categorías. Y en fin, que nos perdonen los muchos jugadores y jugadoras que hemos dejado de mencionar, rezaremos por los que ya no están con nosotros y a los que sigan por aquí, esperamos verlos por la pista de nuevo.
En la actualidad Con el cambio de propiedad de la urbanización a comienzos de los 2000, Financiera Sotogrande dejó de prestar los servicios de mantenimiento de las pistas y los frontones vienen deteriorándose año tras año, sin nadie que se ocupe de su conservación, excepto la buena voluntad de algunos aficionados como Íñigo Soto o Philip von Eberhardt que además de buenos jugadores, de forma desinteresada, realizan tareas de mantenimiento básico.
En def initiva: Nada menos que 50 años de historia, repletos de personas y anécdotas que merecen ser conocidas y preservadas. Nada se ha escrito antes de este deporte y no existe ninguna Federación Oficial que lo patrocine. Las únicas instalaciones conocidas están en Manila y Sotogrande. Los españoles llevaron el frontón a Filipinas y los filipinos, en correspondencia, nos devolvieron la increíble y divertidísima “bola filipina” que durante estos 50 años ha sido uno de los ejes que vertebraban deporte y vida social en Sotogrande y que, hoy, está al borde de su desaparición por desconocimiento y falta de inversión.
Golf, Polo, Tenis y Frontón son el origen de la enorme oferta deportiva del Sotogrande de hoy. Les debemos el máximo respeto. Quienes atesoramos en nuestra memoria y en nuestros corazones la esencia de Sotogrande, debemos encontrar el camino para que esta pequeña y exclusiva joya deportiva, conocida por nosotros como Bola Filipina, aún tan viva y tan llena de historia, no caiga en el olvido.

In the women’s category, the Melián family stood out: Victoria, Ginia, Sylvia and Cecilia, for their good play and elegance on court. We must not forget about Amparo Preysler, who played with a certain advantage as she had trained previously in Manila and her eternal friendliness and smile did not at all detract from her fierce competitiveness on court. María Eugenia Médem and María Waconigg beat all the records for victories in their categories. And lastly, may the many players we have forgot to mention forgive us, we will pray for those who are no longer with us and those who are still here, we hope to see them out on court again.
At present With the change of ownership of the resort at the start of the 2000s, Financiera Sotogrande stopped providing maintenance services for the courts and the frontón courts deteriorated year after year without anyone to look after their conservations, except for the willingness of some enthusiasts such as Íñigo Soto and Philip von Eberhardt who, in addition to being good players, carry out basic maintenance work free of charge. Despite this deterioration, the frontón courts still have life thanks to the fact that the owners of the courts have kept them open until present and the passion to keep this sport by many people in Sotogrande. The tournament for children organised by Gonzalo Médem in August this year, “XI Carlos Sobrino Memorial” brought together over 100 participants in all the categories. The veterans, who resist retirement, played a hard-fought tournament on 19 August, as the finishing touch to the summer of 2023. A large group of representatives from Club Pineda de Sevilla participated, along with some members from Puerta de Hierra in Madrid and Sotogrande Golf Club.
In a nutshell No fewer than 50 years of history, packed with people and anecdotes that deserve to be known and preserved. Nothing
has been written before about this sport and there is no Official Federation that sponsors it. The only known facilities are in Manila and Sotogrande. The Spaniards took frontón to the Philippines and the Filipinos, in return, gave us back the incredible and very fun “Philippine ball” which over these 50 years has been one of the focuses that structured sport and social life in Sotogrande and which, today, is on the verge of disappearing due to lack of knowledge about it and a lack of investment.
Golf, Polo, Tennis and Frontón are the origin of the enormous range of sport in Sotogrande today. We owe them total respect. Those of us who treasure the essence of Sotogrande in our memories and hearts must find the way for this small and exclusive sporting gem, known by us as “Philippine Ball” still so alive and packed with history, to not be forgotten about.
