Dar vida a la playa

Es una de las prácticas más habituales en las editoriales periodísticas, usar esta tribuna de opinión y este privilegiado espacio para expresar opiniones más o menos lanzadas que cuestionen la acción o actuación política en algunas de sus ramas y administraciones. Y que no se pierda. Vemos que la próxima semana se constituye en las Cortes para la próxima legislatura con un absoluto grado de incertidumbre sobre la próxima presidencia del gobierno, pactos legislativos o lo que parece otra opción, cada vez más viable, que acabe en repetición de elecciones.

En cualquiera de los casos, este empalagoso entramado político de los últimos años trae algo aburrido al votante tranquilo, ése que premia o castiga cada cuatro años la gestión o su falta en cualquiera de los ámbitos; un votante sin bufanda ni prejuicios que sólo busca su bienestar laboral, familiar y personal, en definitiva, cuatro años tranquilo.

Pero también se utiliza la editorial, en muchos de los casos cuando requiere reconocimiento, para exaltar acciones que deben reconocerse e impulsar que continúen por esa senda. El Ayuntamiento de San Roque y por extensión el tejido empresarial del Valle del Guadiaro colindante con la costa, es uno de los más activos de toda la región en la generación de actividades y contenidos durante los meses estivales.

Los vemos casi desde el inicio de la temporada en mayo, en junio con las hogueras e incluso en las noches de luna llena. Conciertos, actividades, mercadillos, talleres solidarios para niños, actividades de limpieza y divulgación de cuidado del medio ambiente, jornadas con los más mayores e incluso, campeonatos de fútbol y otros deportes.

We see it almost from the start of the season in May, in June with the bonfires and even on full moon nights. Concerts, activities, markets, charity workshops for children, cleaning activities and dissemination of environmental care, days with the elderly and even, football championships and other sports. Golf y sequía, un tema serio Golf and drought, a serious issue

Estamos disfrutando de uno de los veranos más plenos y con mayor presencia de residentes y visitantes de los últimos años, es de sobra conocido, el crecimiento exponencial tanto en población flotante como en residentes fijos en la urbanización a raíz de la pandemia. Un fenómeno que en parte, puso en valor y en alza todo el atractivo de un destino residencial de lujo como Sotogrande, en pleno contacto con la naturaleza y grandes espacios, baja densidad de construcción, etc. Un enclave perfecto.

Todos ese aumento de interés y atractivos, incluyendo una temporada con dos eventos de golf profesionales (LIV Golf y DP World) dentro de la propia urbanización, el Grand Slam de Polo, regata, etc. Se traducen en un destino imbatible y complejo de igualar. Siendo el golf, también el golf de temporada (entre otoño y primavera con la llegada de los visitantes centroeuropeos atraídos por el clima y los excelentes campos de la zona); uno de sus mayores pilares. Precisamente atravesamos una de las épocas y tramos de sequías más alarmantes en las últimas décadas, hace falta mirar aquellos cortes y restricciones a la población de principios de los años 90 para recordar una situación medianamente similar y las consecuencias ya comienza a verse en circunstancias que son muy importantes en las zonas.

Los márgenes de riego permitidos en la mayoría de campos de golf, hacen concentrar esfuerzos en tees y greenes, dejando imágenes de calles en un estado muy perjudicado. Por no mencionar las diferentes reglamentaciones en cuanto a lagos estéticos, piscinas y otros derivados con el agua como protagonista.

Estamos ante una situación ciertamente seria y preocupante. Mirar al cielo y esperar que llueva parece no ser una solución empírica ni el resultado esperado a largo plazo. Es necesario que las diferentes entidades e instituciones implicadas, tanto privadas como públicas, se pongan a trabajar completamente en serio para buscar estrategias y planes de actuación viables a corto y medio plazo.

Recuperar proyectos como Gibralmedina, por parte de la Mancomunidad, o establecer alternativas en los campos de golf y otras entidades similares; con suministro de agua reciclada y conexiones con depuradoras del entorno son planes que deben activarse y ponerse en marcha desde ya.

Supone un valor económico y de generación de empleo enorme, con docenas de familias que trabajan y viven gracias a esta actividad de tanta atracción turística y de servicio (hoteles, empresas de transporte, restaurantes, tiendas, proveedores, etc.). Una red perfecta y que debe cuidarse como cualquier otra sector estratégico, mientras tanto, disfruten de este maravilloso agosto en Sotogrande.

El resto de establecimientos residenciales, hoteleros y de alquiler, están completos desde hace casi semanas con unos registros muy elevados y datos que están por encima a los porcentajes de 2019, antes del inicio de la pandemia.

En cuanto a la actividad comercial y deportiva, los registros son aún mayores en estas últimas semanas, con multitud de eventos musicales, torneos de golf y grandes congregaciones de públicos en la jornadas más atractivas del Torneo Internacional de Polo.

Terrazas al completo, reservas cerradas y un trasiego único de personas y coches por las calles de la Marina, puerto antiguo y urbanización como en pocas ocasiones se ha visto en Soto-

grande. “No hay dónde aparcar, no por falta de sitios, está al completo Sotogrande”, se escucha casi en cada esquina. ¿Y cómo quieren que éste durante los días claves del mes de agosto?

Sotogrande presenta y luce casi mejor que nunca en esta versión veraniega. Los establecimientos hoteleros de primer orden (SO/ Sotogrande, Hotel Encinar, MiM Sotogrande, etc.); copan sus

reservas y volumen de ocupación por encima del 90% e incluso en muchos de ellos, se encuentra completo al 100% en los tramos más importantes de agosto y durante fines de semana.

Así como en el sector de la restauración que también registra uno de los veranos con mayor facturación que se recuerda. Sotogrande atraviesa una de las temporadas mas fructíferas de los últimos tiempos, a ver cuánto se extiende una vez pasado agosto.

Querido Carlos, un placer tenerte un año más por Sotogrande, y más aún verte disfrutando de los parabienes de nuestra urbanización. Hablando de retórica, ¿va a ser cierto al final eso de que España es un país ingobernable?

No creo que sea ingobernable, aunque, evidentemente, las últimas elecciones generales nos han situado en un horizonte político donde la formación del Gobierno será difícil. Pero incluso en el caso de que ni PP ni PSOE logren los apoyos suficientes, no sería el fin del mundo, sino el comienzo de un nuevo ciclo electoral.

¿Algo parecido a la viñeta famosa de “el caos o yo”?

Pues, no, porque la falta de Gobierno no es sinónimo de caos, mientras las instituciones más o menos puedan seguir funcionando. Los políticos suelen esgrimir esa amenaza para atraer votantes, pero la verdad es que los partidos con opciones de gobierno no son tan diferentes como ellos mismos pretenden que creamos. Y el caos genuino, que sería la España republicana, comunista y desmembrada, que pretenden los nacionalistas y la extrema izquierda, parece imposible, por pésima que sea nuestra opinión de la persona que podría desencadenarla: Pedro Sánchez.

En esta pregunta quiero ir algo más a lo técnico y menos a predicciones políticas: ¿Cómo respira la economía para el segundo semestre?

Hay una cierta desaceleración de la actividad económica en muchos países, incluida España, eso está claro, y seguimos con los problemas de inflación y de finanzas públicas.

¿Y los tipos de interés, hipotecas, etc.? Sospecho que se mantendrán elevados durante un tiempo, hasta que se vaya moderando la inflación.

¿Qué beneficios supondrá para España esa presidencia itinerante de la Unión Europea? ¿Cómo aprovechar el ser el centro de todos los focos?

La presidencia es más simbólica que otra cosa, aunque los políticos que la ocupan no pierden la ocasión para señalar lo importantes que son. En realidad, la verdadera relevancia de Europa es que impide, de momento, que las autoridades hagan tonterías gravísimas.

Antes de acabar, no me canso de preguntártelo. ¿Debemos ser optimistas con esta España tan particular “a pesar del Gobierno”?

A los españoles nos gusta despotricar contra el Gobierno, lo que sin duda es sano y liberal.

Ahora bien, si España fuera como sus gobiernos, entonces difícilmente habríamos logrado ser uno de los países más relevantes del mundo. Debemos dar gracias a Dios porque lo fundamental no está en la política sino en la gente, y porque los países suelen ser mejores que sus autoridades. ¡Imagínate qué espanto si fuera al revés!

Y una en tintero. ¿Cómo has encontrado Sotogrande este verano? Está de 60 aniversario y éste, su periódico, también celebra el 25 aniversario. He encontrado a Sotogrande estupendo este verano. Nos quejamos, como siempre, de que hay mucha gente, y eso genera inconvenientes. Pues, claro que hay gente. Si no la hay en verano,

¿cuándo la va a haber? Pero la clave es que nuestra urbanización sigue progresando y, sobre todo, sigue siendo la más bonita y elegante de España, como reconocen propios y extraños. Además, Sotogrande está de cumpleaños, y, para colmo de bienes, nuestro Periódico celebra su primer cuarto de siglo. ¿Qué más se puede pedir?

Beloved Carlos, it is a pleasure to have you in Sotogrande once again this year, and even more so to see you enjoying the attractions of our resort. Speaking of rhetoric, is it true that ultimately Spain is an ungovernable country?

I don’t think it is ungovernable, although, clearly, the last general elections put us in a political scenario where it will be difficult to form a Government. However, even in the event that neither the PP nor PSOE achieve sufficient support, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, but rather the start of a new election cycle.

Something similar to the famous cartoon strip “chaos or me”? Well, no, because the lack of Government isn’t synonymous with chaos, while institutions can more or less continue to function. Politicians normally wield that threat to attract voters, but the truth is that parties with the options of governing are not as different as they themselves want us to believe. And genuine chaos, which would be the Republican, communist and dismembered Spain that the nationalists and far left want, seems impossible, no matter how awful our opinion is of the person who could trigger it: Pedro Sánchez.

In this question, I want to delve into the technical aspect a little more and less into political predictions: How is the economy looking for the second half of the year? There is a certain slowdown in economic activity in many countries, including Spain, which is clear, and we still have the problems of inflation and public finances.

And interest rates, mortgages, etc.?

I suspect that they will remain high for a while, until inflation gradually levels out.

What benefits will that rotating presidency of the European Union bring to Spain? How can we make the most of being the centre of attention?

The presidency is more symbolic than anything, although the politicians that hold it don’t miss the chance to show how important they are. In reality, the true importance of Europe is that it prevents, at the moment, authorities from doing very serious stupid things.

Before ending, I never get tired of asking you this. Should we be optimistic with this very particular Spain “despite the Government”? Spanish people like to rant against the Government, which is undoubtedly healthy and liberal. However, if Spain was like its governments, then we would have

found it difficult to become of the world’s most important countries. We should thank God because the essentials aren’t in politics, but rather in the people, and because countries are normally better than their authorities. Imagine how scary it would be if it

were the other way round!.

And one I forgot about. How have you found Sotogrande this summer? It is its 60th anniversary, and this, its newspaper, is also celebrating its 25th anniversary. I havefound Sotogrande to be

amazing this summer. As always, we complain that there are lots of people, and that creates setbacks. Well, of course there are people. If there aren’t in summer, when will there be? However, the key is that our resort continues to progress and, above all, it remains the most

beautiful and elegant in Spain, as locals and foreigners acknowledge. Also, Sotogrande is celebrating its birthday and, to top off the good things, our Periódico de Sotogrande is celebrating its first quarter of a century. What more can you ask for?

Disfruta de las playas para perros cerca de Sotogrande

El verano son noches interminables, sal en el pelo, amigos, familia, viajes. El verano es uno de los mejores momentos para disfrutar de la playa y en muchos casos esto se complica cuando tienes perros ya que no todas son accesibles para los caninos. Esto no va a ser un problema a partir de ahora ya que vas a descubrir todas las que están cerca de Sotogrande. Si vamos a la zona de Cádiz nos podemos encontrar con la playa de Camposoto. El acceso a ella puede resultar un poco tedioso debido a que los aparcamientos están lejos. Otra de las peculiaridades de esta playa es que el perro debe de estar siempre atado menos en la zona acotada. A pocos kilómetros, se encuentra la playa del Rinconcillo, esta fue pionera en la zona y aquí el canino puede disfrutar sin ningún tipo de limitaciones. Además, cuenta con duchas y bebederos para mascotas.

La Playa de los Manolos se encuentra entre La Línea y el Campo de Gibraltar se convierte en una de las playas más populares para ir con los perros durante la época de verano. Pero si prefieres tranquilidad te proponemos la playa de Santa Clara en que se extiende desde Punta Torre hasta Alcaidesa.

Es un lugar prácticamente virgen y es perfecta para desconectar con tu mascota. Por la parte de la Costa del Sol también te puedes encontrar playas espectaculares, de agua clara y arena fina en las que puedes disfrutar de la compañía de tu perro. Este es el caso de la playa de

Piedra Paloma que se encuentra en el municipio de Casares. Su litoral cuenta con casi medio kilómetros adaptando para los caninos. Siguiendo es esta zona, pero más alejada de Sotogrande se encuentra la playa Ventura del Mar, en la zona más occidental de Nueva Andalucía, su playa es semiurbana de arena oscura y de una anchura de 25 metros. También en Marbella se encuentra Pinillos, una playa extensa con de 1,5 kilómetros de longitud, una de playa perfecta para estar relajado en verano. Si seguimos recorriendo la costa del sol os encontrareis con Torre Del Mar que se ubica en este municipio. Es un tramo de unos 400 metros que se inauguró en 2016. Cuenta con zona de juegos, pipican y todo lo necesario para que tu mascota se divierta. La playa del Castillo del Sohail, está ubicada en Fuengirola, su litoral cuenta con 3 kilómetros de largo, una de las

más grandes accesible para perros. Sin olvidar la playa de Torrox, su localización es la desembocadura del río Torrox, se inauguró hace 6 años y está formada por cantos rodados.

Cada vez hay más puntos y municipios bañados por el mar donde deciden crear un espacio para que las mascotas y sus dueños puedan disfrutar de un día de playa. Esto es debido a que el número de caninos enelhogarcadavezesmayoryson más las personas que deciden tener a un integrante peludo en la familia. Todas ellas cuantas con una serie de normas que pueden variar dependiendo del lugar. Las más comunes y a tener en cuenta son: llevar la documentación del perro, si son perros potencialmente peligrosos siempre deben de ir atados y con bozal; recoger los excrementos de la mascota; estar pendiente en todo momento de donde se encuentra

If we head to the Cadiz zone we can discover the beach of Camposoto. Access to it can be a little tedious due to the fact that the car parks are far away. Another of the peculiarities of this beach is that dogs must always be on a leash except in the

area that is marked out. A few kilometres away is Rinconcillo beach, it was a pioneer in the area, and dogs can have fun here without any kinds of limitations. Also, it has showers and drinking fountains for pets.

Los Manolos beach located between La Línea and Campo de Gibraltar has become one of the most popular beaches to visit with dogs during summer. However, if you enjoy peacefulness we suggest the beach of Santa Clara which runs from Punta Torre to Alcaidesa. It is a practically unblemished place and is perfect for switching off with your pet.

In the Costa del Sol part you can also

find spectacular beaches, with clear water and fine sand that you can enjoy accompanied by your dog. This is the case with Piedra Paloma beach located in the municipality of Casares. Its coastline has almost half a kilometre adapted for dogs. Continuing in this area, but further from Sotogrande is Ventura del Mar beach, in the westernmost area of Nueva Andalucía, its beach is semi urban with dark sand and a width of 25 metres. Belén Jiménez indicó que se trata de trabajos de nueva

canalización en toda la urbanización de Las Adelfas, en la zona nueva de la barriada. Aclaró que, además de ser una necesidad, era una de las peticiones de los propios vecinos que tenían problemas con las conexiones a internet.

Explicó la edil que la canalización donde existía anteriormente la posibilidad de meter fibra óptica estaba en el interior de las viviendas, que se ha ido obstruyendo debido a las diferentes obras que han ido realizando cada uno de los vecinos; tanto era así que es inviable pasar la fibra por esa canalización antigua.

Apuntó Jiménez que los trabajos, por tanto, consisten en “sacar desde las esquinas las

nuevas canalizaciones que van por el propio acerado, lo que permite que sea mucho más fácil descubrirlas en caso de que pueda surgir cualquier tipo de avería en el futuro”. Añadió que con esta obra se dispone de un punto de entrada a través de una arqueta por cada dos viviendas para facilitar aun más los trabajos en caso de avería, con la esperanza de dar respuesta a las necesidades de los vecinos de esta zona.

Let’s not forget that we are also redesigning several villas in Sotogrande to make them contemporary but without leaving aside their character and personality typical of the traditional architecture of Sotogrande, such as villas of 20/30 years ago in Sotogrande costa, area of kings and queens, and in zone B, where we are very excited about a project of rehabilitation of a villa in Buenavista street of the promoter group. Architects such as Madariaga should always be remembered and developers should not be carried away by the mass-produced contemporary architecture of concrete and glass cubes so common nowadays. There is an elegant and timeless Sotogrande style that must not be lost. Tras dos vibrantes semifinales este miércoles en las canchas 3 y 4 de Los Pinos, en Sotogrande, San Luis y Park Place se aseguraron un lugar en la final de la Copa de Plata Terralpa de Alto Hándicap de este sábado, en el marco del 52° Torneo

Internacional de Polo Andalucía. San Luis se impuso a MB Polo por 9 a 7, mientras que Park Place hizo lo propio ante Sainte Mesme, por 12 a 9.

A su vez, y después de los 4 compases que dieron por finalizada la instancia clasifi-

catoria del Mediano Hándicap, Amanara y Almasanta se clasificaron a la final de la categoría, programada para este viernes. Las finales de la Copa de Plata Terralpa están programadas para disputarse entre el viernes 11 y el sábado 12 de agosto.

After two vibrant semi-finals on Wednesday on fields 3 and 4 at Los Pinos in Sotogrande, San Luis and Park Place secured their places in the final of the Terralpa High Goal Silver Cup this Saturday, as part of the 52nd Andalucía International Polo Tournament. San Luis beat MB Polo by 9-7, while Park Place did the same against Sainte

Mesme, by 12-9. In turn, and after the 4 rounds that ended the qualifying round of the Medium Handicap, Amanara and Almasanta qualified for the final of the category, scheduled for this Friday. The finals of the Terralpa Silver Cup are scheduled to take place on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th August.

Un placer saludarte ‘Sapo’ y tenerte de nuevo en nuestras páginas y en Sotogrande. Enhorabuena por ese pase de la Final de la Copa de Plata. Gracias, con calor pero muy bien [ríe]. Fue duro y complicado, como siempre en Sotogrande pero tenemos un gran equipo [San Luis], hemos podido competir bien y como siempre con muchas ganas de levantar una copa en Sotogrande.

¿Cómo crees que se ha organizado la temporada este año en Sotogrande?

De los últimos, sin duda, puede que estemos ante una de las temporadas más fuertes en Sotogrande. Hay enormes equipos, cualquiera te puede ganar en un momento dado, sólo hace falta

ver algunos de los últimos encuentros que la mayoría se han decidido en el último chukker o por un gol en la última jugada. Se ve que no existen grandes dife-

rencias y hay un nivel de juego muy parejo. Hay muchos candidatos para los trofeos y casi todos los partidos son una final. Está muy interesante.

¿Cómo estáis compitiendo con San Luis?

El equipo viene lanzado, estamos disputando muy bien cada uno de los partidos, hemos ganado los tres que hemos jugado hasta ahora y pasándola bien, ya saben. Toca festejar el pase a la final pero sólo un poco [ríe] y ponerse desde ya a trabajar para esta Gran Final de la Copa de Plata

¿Un plantel de mucho nombre esta temporada en Sotogrande?

Así te decía, venimos desde hace tres temporadas con el mismo equipo y la temporada cada vez crece más y más; no se puede decir otra cosa porque es la realidad. Sube el número de equipos, mejoran las organizaciones y el plantel de jugadores

es magnífico. Este año se puso muy duro y competitivo, con los mejores jugadores del mundo. Es un lujo

¿Y el regreso de los 22 goles al Alto?

Magnífico pero un poco enmascarado porque el nivel es muchísimo más alto. Hay jugadores que tienen HCP superior en otros lugares y eso hace que aún se más exigente y competitivo los equipos. Más que 22, te diría que estamos jugando un polo de 24/26 goles como mínimo.

Thanks, it’s hot but everything is good (laughs). It was tough and difficult, as always in Sotogrande we have a great team (San Luis), we were able to compete well and as always we are really eager to lift a cup in Sotogrande.

How do you think the season has been organised this year in Sotogrande?

Of recent years, undoubtedly, it may be one of the strongest seasons in Sotogrande. There are amazing teams, any one of them can beat you at some point, you simply have to look

at some of the last games, where most were decided in the last chukker or by a goal in the last play. It is apparent that there are no big differences and the level of play is very close. There are lots of candidates for the trophies and almost all the matches are a final. It is really interesting.

How are you competing with San Luis?

The team is going in strong, we are competing very well in each of the matches, we have won the three we have played thus far and, you know, while having a great time. It is time to celebrate making it to the final, but only a little (laughs) and to get working now ahead of the Grand Finale of

the Silver Cup.

Is there a very renowned line-up this season in Sotogrande?

It is what I was saying, for three seasons we have come

with the same team and the season is growing more and more; you can’t say otherwise because it is the reality. The number of teams is increasing, the organisations are improving and the line-up of

players is magnificent. This year is very tough and competitive, with the world’s best players. It is a luxury

What about the return of 22 goals to the High category? Magnificent but a little disguised because the level is much higher. There are players who have a higher HCP in other places and that makes the teams even more demanding and competitive. More than 22, I would say we are playing 24/26 goal polo as a minimum.

La Capilla se prepara para un agosto con mucho polo

La Capilla, a sólo 5 minutos de Sotogrande, organiza un fantástico calendario de polo este agosto en la zona. Se trata de cuatro torneos divididos en diferentes fechas que se disputarán a lo largo de este mes. Como los torneos de polo tradicional a medida que se va jugando van aumentando el nivel de la competición, lo único diferente son sus nombres que pasan de ser bronce, plata, oro y platino a llamarse esmeralda, sapphiere, ruby y diamond [durante los cuatro fines de semana de agosto, respectivamente].

El segundo de ellos, el torneo esmeralda, será del 8 al 13 de agosto y durante el resto de semanas se irán consolidando las siguientes competiciones. Un evento que se realizará en las magníficas instalaciones de

La Capilla Polo Club en el mes del polo y que espera atraer a

todos los amantes del polo a este evento tan especial.

La Capilla from Sotogr nising a fantastic polo calendar this August in the area. There are four tournaments divided into different dates to be played throughout the month. As traditional polo tournaments increase in level as they are played, the only difference is their names, which change from bronze, silver, gold and platinum to emerald, sapphiere, ruby and diamond [during the four weekends in August respectively].

The second of these, the emerald tournament, will run from 8-13 August, with the remaining weeks consolidating the following competitions. An event that will be held at the magnificent facilities of La Capilla Polo Club in the month of polo and that hopes to attract all polo lovers to this very special event.

Sotogrande y polo: un binomio histórico

Es posible imaginarse una tarde verano en Sotogrande sin acabar disfrutando de un partido de polo. El polo forma parte del lifestyle sotograndino desde siempre y se encuentra presente desde los inicios de la urbanización en su concepto fundacional. Una simbiosis perfecta en el que familias al completo disfrutan desde los años 60 de esta gran afición por el deporte y el mundo del caballo. Las tardes en la cancha de la playa, la de Paniagua, las de Río, Puente de Hierro o la máxima expresión del polo más internacional, comercial y social con su expansión en Los Pinos. Todo ello bajo la mano de apellidos tan ilustre como los Zobel, Mora-Figueroa, Domecq o Parladé, entre otros muchos. Una gran historia y afición que gira, actualmente, en Sotogrande, alrededor de tres grandes clubes: Santa María Polo Club, Ayala Polo Club y Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo.

Este selecto deporte ecuestre ha posicionado desde hace años a la urbanización en los mayores altares del deporte polístico, siendo Sotogrande una de las paradas obligatorias para los principales patrones y jugadores desde hace décadas, llegando incluso a convertirse desde hace unos años en uno de los Grand Slam del circuito internacional de polo. Para ser un breve repaso por la historia del polo en Sotogrande rememoramos y repasamos algunos de los grandes hitos y efemérides de su influencia en la urbanización. A este Sotogrande primitivo llegaría el polo que trajo de Filipinas Enrique Zóbel, creando la legendaria cancha de la playa que tan buenos recuerdos dio a los primeros residentes de Sotogrande. En ella, cada tarde, se reunían todos para ver los partidos y pasar un rato divertido entre amigos. Éste fue el germen de lo que hoy significa el polo de

Sotogrande en el mundo entero, siendo uno de los pocos sitios en el que, internacionalmente hablando, es posible jugar al polo durante todo el año. Hoy Sotogrande cuenta con grandes trofeos, entre los que destacan la «Copa de Oro Sotogrande», que viene jugándose desde el año 1971 y convierte a la urbanización en capital mundial de este deporte durante semanas.

En 1973 se celebra la primera edición de Copa de Plata, cuyo vencedor fue el equipo de Sotogrande y al año siguiente se inaugura la cancha de polo de Paniagua. El inicio de la década de los 90 impulsaría una mayor profesionalización del Torneo Verano, así como de las diferentes copas, con el aterrizaje de grandes organizaciones y patrones internacionales de gran prestigio, así como el apoyo y patrocinio de importantes marcas comerciales. Las canchas de Puente de Hierro

se fundarían en 1992 y sería en 1995 cuando se construyesen las canchas de Haciendas de San Enrique I y II, con otro gran avance de instalaciones políticas en la zona. En 2008, llega el salto definitivo a nivel cuantitativo y cualitativo con la inauguración de la

zona de Los Pinos de Santa María Polo Club. Recientemente, destacar la recuperación en la gestión del polo por parte de Ayala Polo, con Paola Zobel (nieta de Enrique Zobel) que desde hace unos años gestiona el torneo y toda su organización, con Ayala Polo Club.

Sotogrande and polo: an historic pairing

It isn´t possible to imagine a summer evening in Sotogrande without ending up by enjoying a polo match. Polo has always been a part of the Sotogrande lifestyle and it has been present since the outset of the resort in its founding concept. A perfect symbiosis where entire families have enjoyed this great passion for sport and the equestrian world since the 60´s.

Evenings on the beach pitch, the one at Paniagua, those of Río, Puente de Hierro and the greatest expression of the most international, commercial and social polo with its expansion at Los Pinos. All alongside very illustrious surnames such as Zobel, Mora-Figueroa, Domecq and Parladé, among many others. A great history and passion that in Sotogrande currently revolves around three major clubs: Santa María Polo Club, Ayala Polo Club and Dos Lunas Dressage & Polo.

For years, this select equestrian sport has positioned the resort on the highest altars of polo, Sotogrande has been one of the obligatory stops for the main patrons and players for decades, a few years ago it even became one of the Grand Slams on the international polo circuit.

As this is a short look at the history of polo in Sotogrande we are remembering and looking back at some of the major milestones and key dates of its influence in the resort. To this early Sotogrande, polo would arrive brought from the Philippines by Enrique Zóbel, creating the legendary beach pitch that provided so many good memories for the first residents of Sotogrande. Each evening, everyone gathered there to watch the matches and have a fun time among friends. This was the seed of what the polo of Sotogrande now means around the entire world, it is one of the few places where, internationally speaking, it is possible to play polo throughout the year. At present, Sotogrande has major trophies, notably including the “Sotogrande Gold Cup”, which has been played since 1971 and it turns the resort into the global capital of this sport for weeks. In 1973, the first edition of the Silver Cup took place, the winner was the Sotogrande team and the following year the Paniagua polo pitch opened. The start of the 90´s would encourage greater professionalization of the Summer Tournament, as well as of the different cups, with the arrival of major organisations and highly prestigious international patrons, as well as the support and sponsorship of important commercial brands.

The pitches of Puente de Hierro were founded in 1992, and in 1995 the pitches of Haciendas de San Enrique I and II were polo, another major ad-

La Solheim Cup 2023 vivirá un lleno histórico con 82.000 entradas vendidas para septiembre en Finca Cortesín

El consejero de Turismo, Cultura y Deporte, Arturo Bernal, visitó las instalaciones del campo de golf Finca Cortesín para conocer los preparativos de la Solheim Cup 2023, que se celebrará del 18 al 24 de septiembre. Es la primera vez que España acoge la Solheim Cup, el torneo de golf femenino más importante del calendario internacional y que enfrenta a los equipos de Europa y Estados Unidos cada dos años. A apenas un mes de la cita, se han vendido 82.000 entradas y la organización augura un lleno histórico. Bernal ha señalado que “vamos a vivir un espectáculo inolvidable y su impacto a todos los niveles se está notando desde ya”. Durante el recorrido por el complejo deportivo, el consejero ha estado acompañado por la golfista Noemí Jiménez;

los secretarios generales para el Turismo, Yolanda de Aguilar; y el Deporte, José María Arrabal; el director gerente de la Empresa Pública para la Gestión del Turismo y el Deporte de Andalucía, Lisardo Morán; Gemma del Corral, delegada territorial de Turismo,

Cultura y Deporte en Málaga; el General Manager de Finca Cortesín, Vicente Rubio, y Francisco Lancastre, director de golf de Finca Cortesin, entre otros.

El campo de golf ha sufrido algunas modificaciones para adaptarse a las exigencias de

la Solheim Cup. El nuevo hoyo 1 permite situar un graderío con capacidad para tres mil espectadores, que permitirá a la afición estar muy cerca de las jugadoras. En cuanto a la previsión de visitantes, Bernal recordó que “se han vendido 82.000 entradas, es una cifra

récord, y es especialmente relevante que en el reparto de esas entradas el 50% vienen de Reino Unido y Escocia. Y también es importante que la media habitual de visitantes de EEUU era de un 2% y se ha alcanzado el 6%”.

The golf course has undergone some modifications to adapt it to the requirements of the Solheim Cup. The new hole 1 allows for a grandstand with a capacity for three thousand spectators, which will allow the fans to be very close to the players. As for the visitor forecast, Bernal recalled that “82,000 tickets have been sold, which is a record figure, and it is especially relevant that 50% of these tickets come from the United Kingdom and Scotland. And it is also important that the usual average of visitors from the USA

was 2% and has reached 6%.

The councillor put the media impact of the Solheim Cup at “two hundred million euros. We also expect around 300 million euros in direct and indirect impact. We are talking about a global impact of around 500 million euros, with an

event that will not only place Andalusia and Malaga as a place of reference, but will also generate a new icon of golf courses worldwide,” he said, referring to Finca Cortesín, as happened with the Valderrama facilities for the 1997 Ryder Cup.

Un éxito en mayúsculas, mucho ambiente y en especial, lo más importante, mucho golf y del bueno. Más de un centenar de jugadores se dieron cita en Almenara Golf – SO/ Sotogrande para disputar la XXII edición del Abierto de Golf El Periódico de Sotogrande, todo un clásico del verano y en un año muy especial, por ese 25 Aniversario.

Una jornada para el recuerdo con ese centenar de asistentes recogiendo, un año más, el fantástico y tradicional ‘Welcome Pack’ con el polo técnico Adidas y numerosos regalos de firmas y marcas colaboradoras con el evento. El competitivo trazado de Almenara, en esta ocasión los recorridos de Lagos y

Alcornoques, no pusieron nada fáciles las cosas a los participantes.

Tras la prueba, un fantástico cóctel en Society, con vinos de Marqués de Riscal. Una vez finalizada la comida, la tradicional entrega de premios y sorteo de regalos. En el apartado deportivo, mencionar los premios especiales, con la Bola más cercana (indistinta) para Carlos Núñez, mientras que el Drive más largo fue para Rita Jordao (Damas) y Bosco Nowack (Caballeros). En la Cat. Damas se impuso Carmen Rapallo, seguida de Stephanie Noll y Pilar Varo. En Segunda Cat. Caballeros, el triunfo fue para Francisco López Jurado, seguido de Bosco Nowack y Diego Gil; mientras que en la Pri-

A big success, lots of atmosphere and especially, and most importantly, lots of golf and the good kind. More than one hundred players gathered at Almenara Golf – SO/ Sotogrande to compete in the XXII edition of El Periódico de Sotogrande Golf Open, a real summer classic and in a very special year, due to the 25th Anniversary. A memorable day with the one hundred attendees collecting, once again this year, the fantastic and traditional Welcome Pack with the Adidas training top and several gifts from companies and brands that collaborate with the event. The competitive course at Almenara, on this occasion, the Lagos and Alcornoques cour-

ses, didn’t make things easy at all for the participants.

After the event, there was a fantastic social cocktail, with Marqués de Riscal wines. After the lunch, there was the traditional awards ceremony and prize draw.

As for the sport, it is worth mentioning the special prizes, with the closest ball (indiscriminate) won by Carlos Núñez, while the Longest drive went to Rita Jordao (Women) and Bosco Nowack (Men). In the Women’s Category, the winner was Carmen Rapallo, followed by Stephanie Noll and Pilar Varo. In the Men´s Second Category, victory went to Francisco López Jurado, followed by Bosco Nowack and Diego Gil;

The ‘overbooking’ that Sotogrande is experiencing these days, and especially the hotel and gastronomic establishments, caused, due to the high demand, that the attention and service to the players during the cocktail and lunch was not to the liking and desired by the organization and hosts.
