La Bocha rueda con aires renovados En el año de su décimo aniversario, ‘La Bocha European Polo’ saca a la luz el número 26 con aires renovados, con el optimismo emprendedor que nos transmiten proyectos tan atractivos como el de los hermanos Al Habtoor en Dubai, o del Santa María Polo Club en el mismísimo Sotogrande, que en 2008 presentará una nueva espectacular imagen veraniega. Para una conmemoración tan especial hemos querido presentarles una revista ‘10 goles’, con los torneos más relevantes, los grandes equipos y jugadores de la temporada y las mejores imágenes de este fascinante deporte, que son protagonistas destacados de este número de ‘La Bocha European Polo’. Desde Dubai a Argentina, pasando por Europa, USA y México, lo mejor del polo mundial transita por una edición de La Bocha que presenta un cuidado diseño, lo mismo que una nueva y más profunda apuesta informativa por y para el mundo del polo. . Mohammed y Rashid en los jardines del Habtoor Grand Hotel La pasión y las ganas que Rashid y Mohammed Al Habtoor le ponen al polo, más el cualificado equipo que tienen trabajando para a ellos, encabezado por el argentino Justo del Carril, hacen de la Organización Al Habtoor un verdadero ‘motor’ del polo en Dubai. “Nosotros estamos limitados por las distancias, pero aún así podemos ser grandes en este deporte”, le confesó Rashid Al Habtoor a La Bocha el año pasado y hoy, con los resultados a la vista y los planes a futuro que tiene la organización, vaya razón que llevaba el mayor de los hermanos. No es que existan dudas al respecto y menos en un país donde “todo es posible”, según sus propios habitantes afirman. Y para prueba basta con elevar la mirada en esas magníficas avenidas y ver que se está construyendo el edificio más alto del mundo, Burj Dubai; el shopping más grande del mundo, pese a que ya cuentan con el Mall of the Emirates, que tiene la tercera pista de nieve más grande del mundo (sí, nieve en pleno desierto), que con 400 metros de extensión es diversión asegurada para grandes y chicos, principiantes y profesionales.

Y ni que hablar de sus conjuntos de islas en pleno Golfo de Arabia, como lo son The Palm Jumeirah, The World (con 300 islas que forman a la perfección el plano del mundo) o las que se encuentran en construcción, como The Palm Jebel Ali o The Palm Deira. O mencionar alguno de sus emblemáticos edificios, Burj Al Arab o Emirates Towers, por citar sólo dos de los cientos que tienen y de los cientos que están en construcción. Porque no contentos con lo que existe, que es de un nivel superlativo y difícil de asimilar a la vista del común de los mortales, van por más. La construcción en Dubai no cesa, ni siquiera en días de fiesta o fines de semana y si uno deja la ciudad y vuelve a la semana siguiente seguro que se va a encontrar con un edificio que estaba en construcción ya terminado o con uno que comienza a construirse. Pero si en desarrollo y construcción son líderes, tampoco en el deporte se iban a quedar atrás y con el correr de los años han organizado los mejores eventos de golf, tenis y carreras de caballos, como la Dubai World Cup, la más importante del mundo. En Polo, de la mano de la familia Al Habtoor, también siguen la tendencia creciente que existe en su país, porque como Rashid y Mohammed afirman, “queremos hacer más grande nuestra organización”.

Las nuevas cuadras de la estancia Al Habtoor Habtoor Polo La organización Habtoor Polo comenzó, aunque cueste creerlo, con apenas 8 caballos y hoy, con sus nuevas instalaciones a punto de estrenarse y más de 40 caballos propios, son la envidia de cualquier polista de alto handicap. Introducidos en el mundo del polo de la mano de Ali Albwardy, el dueño de Desert Palms y del Dubai Polo Team, y con el apoyo, sentimental y económico de su padre, los hermanos Rashid y Mohammed Al Habtoor se lanzaron con todas las ganas y entusiasmo a esta aventura del mundo del polo. Aventura que piensan continuar de la mano de sus hijos, Tariq y Khalaf, por parte de Rashid, y Habtoor y Ahmed,

hijos de Mohammed, todos ellos también grandes aficionados al polo y que habitualmente juegan con sus padres partidos y torneos, sobre todo los mayores, Tariq y Habtoor. La organización tuvo un vuelco importante a partir del año 2000 con la llegada del profesional argentino Justo del Carril, quien se transformó en el Polo Manager de la Organización. El desembarco de Justo del Carril le dio a Habtoor Polo otro enfoque y se profesionalizó desde todo punto de vista. Infraestructura, caballos y colaboradores crecieron conjuntamente con la organización, que llevó a los hermanos Rashid y Mohammed Al Habtoor a jugar en Australia, Guards Polo Club de Inglaterra, St. Tropez y

Khalaf se prepara Chantilly en Francia, Sotogrande en España y en su país, Dubai, junto a figuras de la talla de Adolfo Cambiaso y Bartolomé Castagnola. La familia unida La unión familiar que les permite el deporte del polo también fue, sin duda alguna, el motivo principal por el cual se embarcaron en el proyecto de construir un gran complejo con seis casas, para toda la familia Al Habtoor, con cuadras de primer nivel y hasta una cancha de polo propia para que toda la familia, y sobre todo la abuela, disfrute de ver a sus hijos y nietos jugando al polo. Los trabajadores de la hacienda hicieron un alto para disfrutar del entrenamiento

inminente, cuenta con comodidades y lujos difícilmente imaginables, y no sólo para la familia Al Habtoor, sino para los otros protagonistas de esta historia: los caballos. Hasta 1000 personas simultáneamente (300 en la fase final) estuvieron trabajando para montar el corazón de la Organización Habtoor Polo. Lo primero que uno encuentra al entrar al enorme complejo es la zona de las caballerizas. Las mismas se componen de un total de 57 boxes, con puertas de madera de apertura completa y 3,20 x 4 metros de superficie para que el caballo tenga espacio y comodidad. Además, cada uno de los boxes posee una ventana para que el caballo pueda respirar el aire exterior. En el interior de las cuadras existe un moderno equipo de aire acondicionado que proporciona una temperatura ideal a los boxes, que también cuentan con un potente sistema de iluminación y una distancia de 5 metros frente por frente entre cada uno de ellos. En un piso superior a las caballerizas existen dos pisos, el principal con seis cuartos, y uno de visitas. Ambos cuentan con todas las comodidades.

En la zona exterior a las cuadras encontramos un corral de césped natural, las tranqueras y el bañadero. Un poco más alejado de las cuadras existe un enorme corral y la pista de vareo. Pero si a uno lo deslumbran las comodidades para los caballos, qué decir de las casas donde vivirán los miembros de la familia Al Habtoor. Las mismas rompen los ojos por su fastuosidad y tamaño, y no sólo las principales, sino también la casa de huéspedes o la cocina, que es exterior a las mismas y que cuenta con una huerta donde se cultivarán las frutas y vegetales que consumirá la familia Al Habtoor. Pero también impacta ver la cancha de polo, que si bien no es de las dimensiones oficiales, sobre todo destaca por el majestuoso contraste entre las grandes casas y el interminable desierto que se deja ver a pocos metros. Es en esa cancha donde padres e hijos disfrutan por igual de su pasión, el polo, y permite disfrutar al resto de su familia

Para los hermanos Rashid y Mohammed lo primordial es la familia y que la Organización Habtoor Polo crezca a su alrededor y colaboradores, ya que todo se vive en un ambiente donde abunda la alegría y la calidez de los anfitriones. Así lo vivió La Bocha European Polo, que tuvo el privilegio de ver uno de los primeros partidos que en esa cancha, ‘su’ cancha de polo, jugó la familia Al Habtoor. Eran las cuatro de la tarde cuando arribaron los todoterreno Mitsubishi (Al Habtoor Enterprises es su representante exclusivo para Dubai) con Rashid y sus hijos y Mohammed y los suyos para jugar al polo. A su arribo todo estaba listo para que simplemente subieran a sus caballos

y disfrutasen de su deporte preferido. Sillas, tacos, pares de botas por doquier, juegos de camisetas de varios colores, pero todos ellos con el simpático logo (un camello) de Habtoor Polo, heladeras con gaseosas y refrescos varios y las infaltables shishas (una pipa de agua tradicional para fumar, también conocida por el nombre de narguila o cachimba), que entre chukker y chukker disfruta Mohammed y, de vez en cuando, Justo del Carril. familiar, totalmente secundario, y más cuando se ve que los seis protagonistas de esta historia disfrutan más allá de los goles que hacen o dejan de hacer. Eso es lo que buscan los hermanos Rashid y Mohammed, y no se cansan de repetirlo, disfrutaron junto a los suyos del deporte que aman y más allá de los torneos a los cuáles puedan asistir o las figuras con las cuáles puedan compartir o enfrentarse en una cancha de polo, para ellos lo primordial es la familia y que la Organización Habtoor Polo crezca en torno a la misma.

The brothers Rashid and Mohammed Al Habtoor visited Sotogrande last season and informed La Bocha European Polo of a number of projects and activities that have become a reality in 2008. The passion and enthusiasm which Rashid and Mohammed Al Habtoor put into polo, plus the skilled team working for them, managed by Argentine Justo del Carril, make the Al Habtoor Organisation a real driving force behind polo in Dubai. “We are limited by the distances, but even so we can become greats in this sport”, said Rashid Al Habtoor to La Bocha last year. And today, with results in sight and the organisation’s plans for the future, how right the eldest of the two brothers was. There are no doubts in this regard, particularly in a country where “everything is possible”, as its own inhabitants assert. For evidence of this all one has to do is take

And we haven’t even mentioned the artificial island groups in the Persian Gulf, including the Palm Jumeirah, The World (with 300 islands that perfectly depict a map of the

The brothers Rashid and Mohammed embarqued on their polo adventure with passion and enthusiasm world), or those under construction, such as the Palm Jebel Ali or the Palm Deira. Nor its iconic buildings, the Burj Al Arab or the Emirates Towers, to name just two of the hundreds in existence or under construction. Because, unsatisfied with what they already have, which is of a superlative standard and difficult for the eyes of a mere mortal to take in, they reach higher. The building work in Dubai never stops, not even on public holidays or weekends, and if you leave the city and return the next week, you will more than likely find a building that was under construction completed or another that they have just started to build. And if in development and construction they are leaders, they were not going to fall behind in sport, and over the years they have organised some of the best events in golf, tennis and horse racing, such as the Dubai World Cup, the most important in the world. In polo, the Habtoor family have also followed the growing trend existing in their country, because, as Rashid and Mohammed say, “we want to make our organisation greater”. 14

Habtoor Polo The Habtoor Polo organisation started, although it’s hard to believe, with just eight horses, and today, with its new facilities about to be opened and over 40 of its own horses, they are the envy of any high-goal polo player. Introduced to the polo world by Ali Albwardy, the owner of Desert Palms and the Dubai Polo Team, and with the emotional and financial support of their father, the brothers Rashid and Mohammed Al Habtoor embarked on their adventure with passion and enthusiasm. Their intention is for the adventure to continue for their children, Tariq and Khalaf, Rashid’s sons, and Habtoor and Ahmed, Mohammed’s boys, all of whom are also great enthusiasts of polo and play alongside their fathers in matches and tournaments, particularly the eldest, Tariq and Habtoor. The organisation received an important boost in 2000 with the arrival of Argentine professional Justo del Carril, who became their polo manager. Justo de Carril’s appointment gave Habtoor Polo a different direction and

it was professionalized in every sense. Infrastructure, horses and staff grew alongside the organisation, and the brothers Rashid and Mohammed Al Habtoor went to play in Australia, Guards Polo Club in England, St. Tropez and Chantilly in France, Sotogrande in Spain and in their own country, Dubai, together with players of the stature of Adolfo Cambiaso and Bartolomé Castagnola. The united family The family unity which the sport of polo affords them was also, without doubt, the main reason for embarking on a project to build a large complex with six houses, for the entire Habtoor family, with first-class stables and even their own polo field so that the entire family, and in particular Grandma, can enjoy watching their sons and grandsons playing polo. The Al Habtoor Farm in Al Khawaneej (on the outskirts of the city of Dubai), the inauguration of which was imminent when this magazine went to print, has unimaginable comforts and luxuries, and not just for the Al Habtoor family, but also for the other protagonists of this story: the horses. to build the headquarters of the Habtoor Polo organisation. The first thing you come across when you enter the enormous complex is the stables. They comprise a total of 57 stalls, with fully opening wooden doors and 3.20 x 4 metre spaces so that the horse has room and comfort. Every stall also has a window so the horse can breathe in the outdoor air. Inside the stables there is a modern airconditioning unit that provides the ideal temperature for the stalls, which also have a powerful lighting system and a distance of five metres front to front between them. Above the stables there are two floors, the main floor with six rooms and another floor for visitors. Both have all mod cons. The area outside the stables has a yard of natural turf, the gates and bathtub. A bit further away from the stables there is an enormous yard and the breaking pen.

The result of the family match was utterly secondary: the six protagonists of this story enjoy much more than just the goals they succeed or fail to score. This is what the brothers Rashid and Mohammed look for, and never tire of: they enjoy the sport that they love with their own people and beyond the tournaments they may enter or the important figures they may play alongside or confront on the polo field, for them the most important thing is the family and for the Habtoor Polo organisation to grow around it.

But if you are dazzled by the comforts for the horses, what of the houses where the Al Habtoor family will live? They take your breath away with their splendour and size, and not just the main ones, but also the guest house and the kitchen, which is separate from the homes and has its own garden where fruit and vegetables to be consumed by the Al Habtoor family are grown. And the polo field also has an impact: although not of the official size, above all it stands out due to the majestic contrast between the big houses and the endless desert just a few metres away. This field is where fathers and sons all enjoy their passion, polo, and it allows the rest of the family and staff to enjoy the action, in an atmosphere in which the joy and warmth of the hosts abounds. This was the experience of La Bocha European Polo, which had the privilege of seeing one of the first matches played on this polo field, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;theirâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; polo field, by the Al Habtoor family. It was four oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;clock in the afternoon when the Mitsubishi (which Al Habtoor Enterprises represents exclusively in Dubai) off-road vehicles appeared with Rashid and Mohammed and their sons to play polo. Upon their arrival everything was ready so that they could simply mount their horses and enjoy their favourite sport. Saddles, mallets, pairs of boots everywhere, sets of shirts of various colours, but all with the likeable logo (a camel) of Habtoor Polo, cool boxes with

Rashid Al Habtoor, el mayor de los hermanos, nos recibe en su casa y pese a lo ajetreado de su agenda, mantiene la misma cordialidad de siempre, esa que le conocimos cuando estuvo el año pasado en Sotogrande o con la que nos agasajó durante nuestra visita a Dubai. Para la entrevista pasamos a un salón

donde se respira polo por los cuatro costados. Trofeos de todo tipo y tamaño, fotos del protagonista junto a Adolfo Cambiaso o Lolo Castagnola, bochas, botas y tacos (muchos de ellos de nuestro conocido ‘Taquito’ de Sotogrande). Pero también hay lugar para una camiseta del Real Madrid, perfectamente enmarcada,

y con las inconfundibles firmas de Raúl, Guti, Beckham, Roberto Carlos, Casillas y Ronaldo; o para una selección de los más finos Cohiba. Rashid entra en escena y es tiempo de conversar sobre el pasado, presente y futuro de Habtoor Polo. “Estamos tratando de expandir nuestra organización de polo, hacerla cada vez más grande, traer a más miembros de nuestra familia a jugar y comprar más caballos”, responde Rashid a cerca de los planes futuros de Habtoor Polo. Cuenta con el ‘privilegio’ de compartir su pasión con su hermano Mohammed y sus hijos y sobrinos, una condición que no se da mucho ni en el polo ni en muchas otras disciplinas. “Siempre admiré las familias que durante varias generaciones practicaron un mismo deporte. Tengo amigos cuyas familias tuvieron esa suerte y nosotros queremos que esto suceda con la nuestra a través del polo. Siempre es un placer jugar con tu hermano, tus hijos y sobrinos. ¡Hasta mi hija va a empezar a jugar al polo!”, exclama orgulloso. “Estamos tratando de que la mayor parte de la familia juegue al polo”, continúa, “porque siempre es lindo ver a los más chicos involucrarse en un deporte donde uno se mezcla con los caballos, la naturaleza, que aprendan a manejar todo lo que rodea al polo y no se pasen la mayor parte de su tiempo sentados frente a una computadora. Por eso también construimos nuestras casas junto a las caballerizas y nuestra propia cancha de polo”. El desarrollo del polo en Dubai depende, en gran parte, de la organización Habtoor Polo y al respecto Rashid comenta que “tenemos más gente joven aprendiendo y jugando polo. La Academia de polo en el Dubai Polo Club está produciendo entre 40 y 50 nuevos jugadores, pero necesitamos más canchas para ellos y afortunadamente existen proyectos para hacer dos o tres más”, confirma finalmente Rashid. l

“I have always admired the families who have played the same sport for generations” Rashid Al Habtoor, the eldest of the brothers, received us at this home and, despite his busy schedule, he maintained the same cordiality as always, as we experienced last year when he was in Sotogrande and throughout our visit to Dubai. For the interview we were taken to a room where polo is present on the four walls. Trophies of all kinds and sizes, photos of the interviewee alongside Adolfo Cambiaso and Lolo Castagnola, polo balls, boots and mallets (many from our renowned Sotogrande ‘Taquito’). And there was also room for a Real Madrid shirt, impeccably framed and with the unmistakeable signatures of Raúl, Guti, Beckham, Roberto Carlos, Casillas and Ronaldo, and for a selection of the finest Cohibas. Rashid enters the stage and its time to talk about the past, present and future of Habtoor Polo. “Our aim is to expand our polo organisation, to make it bigger and bigger, to get more members of our family to play and to buy more horses”, says Rashid in relation to his future plans for Habtoor Polo. He has the ‘privilege’ of sharing his passion with his brother Mohammed and his

sons and nephews, a situation which is not common neither in polo nor in many other disciplines. “I have always admired the families who have played the same sport for generations. I have friends whose families had this good fortune and we want this to happen to us through polo. It’s always a pleasure playing with your brother, your sons and your nephews. Even my daughter is starting to play polo!” he exclaims with pride. “Our aim is for the majority of the family to play polo”, he continues, “because it’s lovely to see the youngest getting involved in a sport among horses and nature, learning everything about polo and not spending most of their time in front of a computer. This is why we built our homes alongside the stables and our own polo field”. The development of polo in Dubai depends to a large extent on the Habtoor Polo organisation and in this regard Rashid points out that “we have more young people learning and playing polo. The Dubai Polo Club Academy is producing from 40 to 50 new players, but we need more fields for them and fortunately there are projects underway to build two or three more”. l

Ese mismo convencimiento lo muestran los pasos que viene dando la organización Habtoor Polo. “Desde que llegó Justo (Del Carril) en el año 2000, cuando apenas teníamos 8 caballos, la estructura de Habtoor Polo ha crecido significativamente. Hoy tenemos caballos para que los dos equipos jueguen seis chukkers y sin repetir. Además hacemos mucha promoción y marketing de nuestro equipo, Habtoor Polo, tratamos

de participar en todos los torneos que podemos, como Sotogrande, Inglaterra, torneos en la nieve, etc. Ya he tenido el privilegio de jugar contra Cambiaso en la Copa Cartier, aquí en Dubai, y de igualarle el partido”, recuerda con una sonrisa Mohammed. “Estamos viajando alrededor del mundo y por donde vamos queremos dejar nuestra marca. Queremos que Al Habtoor Polo esté presente en los mejores sitios”, agrega. En ese sentido, Habtoor Polo será sponsor este año de la Royal Windsor Cup, que se jugará en Guards Polo Club (Inglaterra) del 1 al 22 de junio. Allí, los hermanos Al Habtoor jugarán una exhibición previa a la gran final. También está prevista la disputa de la Habtoor Cup en St. Tropez (Francia), el uno de agosto y está confirmada la presencia de Rashid y Mohammed durante el mes de julio en Sotogrande. También jugarán en Rumania, Líbano o Malasia. En Rumania, Habtoor Polo ya está dejando su huella y busca desarrollar el polo. “Es gente muy interesante para trabajar. Tienen muy buenas tierras, como en la Pampa Argentina, y encontramos un campo para desarrollar un club de polo. Comenzaremos con dos canchas de polo y después construiremos caballerizas y unas casas como las que tenemos en nuestra estancia en Dubai”, confirma Mohammed. También hay planes para hacer o comprar una cancha de polo en Sotogrande. “Es una idea que estamos madurando, pero todavía no sabemos ni cuándo ni dónde. Por el momento estamos comprando caballos para hacer base en España durante el mes de julio, donde jugaremos varios torneos. Rashid jugará tres torneos y yo jugaré dos, uno de ellos con mi hijo”. El polo en familia, una condición sine qua non, para los Habtoor y que esta presente en cada conversación. “Buscamos mantener esta tradición de unir a la familia en torno al polo y que no sólo sea algo que hacemos nosotros dos porque nos gusta este deporte, sino que se mantenga con el paso del tiempo”, concluye Mohammed. l

Al Habtoor Por esas cosas del destino, los caminos de Justo del Carril y los hermanos Al Habtoor se cruzaron. El profesional argentino llegó a Dubai en el año 2000 a petición de su amigo Urs Keller para estudiar el funcionamiento de una fábrica de aceite de soja. Tras 17 años jugando la temporada de Estados Unidos, Del Carril estaba con más ganas de bajarse del caballo de polo que de volverse a subir, pero fueron los Habtoor quienes lo convencieron y lo hicieron montarse otra vez al caballo y a su Organización. “Me pasé 15 días viendo la fábrica y un día mi amigo me llevó a ver un partido de polo al Desert Palm y esa misma tarde, tras presentaciones varias, me invitaron a jugar al otro día. Allí estaban Ali Albwardy y Rashid, quien dijo “yo lo monto”, recuerda Justo, refiriéndose a que le cedía sus caballos. “Al otro día jugué y fue uno de esos días en los cuales me salió todo. Al terminar de jugar, Rashid me llevó a su oficina y nos pusimos a hablar, a formular ideas sobre qué se podía hacer, y no me volví más. Llamé a mi mujer y le dije que se viniera para

Verlos mejorar su juego, ver crecer y jugar a sus hijos, haber armado esta historia de traer caballos a la playa y divertirse (en relación a las fotografías de esta edición), eso también es polo. Después hay que salir a ganar y apuntar a otros objetivos, pero ellos también me dieron el tiempo para hacer todo esto, que se hizo entre todos y bien”.

La Bocha European Polo fue testigo exclusivo durante su estancia en Dubai del particular desafío que enfrentó a los hermanos Rashid y Mohammed y a sus respectivos hijos. La segunda edición del Habtoor Challenge Cup 2008, que se realizó en el Dubai Polo and Equestrian Club, también contó con la participación de Justo del Carril y Fernando ‘Pipi’ Bordieu como profesionales más destacados y fue seguido por una entusiasta y selecta concurrencia. El ‘Team Mohammed’, que lució camiseta amarilla y roja, contó con Mohammed Al Habtoor, Habtoor Al Habtoor, Ezequiel de Biasio y Justo de Carril. Por su parte, el ‘Team Rashid’, con casacas blanca y azul, estuvo integrado por Rashid Al Habtoor, Tariq Al Habtoor, Fernando Bordieu y Luis Vignolles. El desarrollo del encuentro fue muy parejo durante los cuatro chukkers que duró el partido y ambos equipos

fueron alternándose en el dominio del tanteador. La edición 2008 del mejor torneo de polo en esta superficie contó con la presencia del argentino Bartolomé Castagnola. Es la primera vez, desde que se jugó su primera edición en 1985, que un jugador de 10 goles forma parte de este torneo, por lo que la 24 edición de la Cartier Polo World Cup concitó una gran expectativa en los días previos a su disputa, entre el 24 y 27 de enero. Brioni festejó su segundo título consecutivo

protagonistas estuvieron a la altura de las circunstancias y se adaptaron perfectamente a las exigencias del polo en la nieve, muy distinto, por cierto, al que tradicionalmente se practica en césped. El equipo de Brioni, compuesto por John Paul Clarkin, Nacho González, Johnny Good y Guy Schwarzenbach, fue, por segundo año consecutivo, campeón de la Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow al vencer a Cartier en la final por 8 ½ a 6.

El neozelandés dominó la bocha desde su campo y luego de dominarla en el aire con unos cuantos golpes, se encaminó hacia los mimbres para sellar un notable tanto. Fue el cierre perfecto para un merecido campeón: Brioni.

El decisivo encuentro tuvo de todo, emoción, buen juego, estupendos goles y un jugador que sobresalió por encima del resto, John Paul Clarkin. En lo que respecta al trámite del partido, Brioni salió al campo con medio gol de ventaja por el handicap, pero Cartier rápidamente se encaminó a acortar esa diferencia.

Como si no bastase con el gran gol que conquistó y que le supuso a su equipo el título, el neozelandés Clarkin también recibió un premio por su yegua, Tía, elegida como el mejor exponente de la final. La actriz italiana Mónica Belluci fue la gran protagonista en la entrega de trofeos.l

Hasta el tercer chukker fue Cartier el que lideró el tanteador gracias a un gran juego de Marcos Di Paola y José Donoso. Fue partir de este período que apareció toda la magia y calidad de Clarkin, que bien acompañado por Nacho González, Johnny Good y Guy Schwarzenbach, fue lentamente inclinando el partido a favor de Brioni. El chukker final fue todo del cuarteto campeón, que logró establecer una buena ventaja y cerrar el partido con el gol más espectacular del torneo, convertido por Clarkin.

Tras la disputa de la Cartier Polo World Cup on Snow en St. Moritz, Suiza continuó siendo el epicentro del polo al trasladarse a Verbier, donde se realizó una atractiva exhibición en la arena, organizada por el Polo Club de Verbier y en la cual tomaron parte los equipos de Julius Bär y Los Indios. Este torneo se disputó en arena y los equipos estuvieron integrados por dos jugadores por bando. Además, la extensión y el largo de los postes fueron más pequeños que la del polo en la nieve. Julius Bär, integrado por Simon y Martin Luginbühl, ambos con 3 goles de handicap, y Los Indios, del argentino Luis González (2) y el uruguayo Alexis de Boismenu (4),

fueron los equipos participantes de la Verbier Polo Cup. El título se lo llevó Julius Bär en un encuentro muy disputado que culminó en su favor 8 a 7. The snow polo season began this year in St. Moritz, the exclusive Swiss ski resort and birthplace of this format which year after year gains in quality in terms of organisation and exponents. The 2008 rendition of the best polo tournament on this surface enjoyed the presence of the Argentine Bartolomé Castagnola. CV WHITNEY CUP Isla Carroll was proclained champion in the CV Whitney Cup, held at Palm Beach International Polo Club, after beating Las Monjitas in the final by 15 goals to 12. Isla Carroll, under the command of Facundo Pieres, thereby lifted the first of the three high-handicap trophies which make up the Triple Crown alongside the USPA Gold Cup and the US Open. The CV Whitney Cup, taking place from February 20 to March 2, involved teams of up to a 26goal handicap. The tournament pays tribute to Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, who together with his brother John Hay Whitney was a prominent patron in the United States in the 1930s. The Argentine Pieres, accompanied by his fellow countrymen Marcos Di Paola and Cristian Laprida and the team’s American patron, John Goodman, got the better of the Columbian Camilo Bautista and the Argentines Eduardo, Javier and Ignacio Novillo Astrada. Las Monjitas came close to glory in the CV Whitney Cup, in which they were runners-up, but this time, following several postponements due to rain, they got their own back in the final of the USPA Gold Cup. It was a perfect afternoon for the Novillo Astradas, on which Javier was outstanding with seven goals and Eduardo was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the final. winning the most important trophy of the United States season for the second year running. With the help of the Argentines Adolfo Cambiaso and Ignacio Heguy, Crab Orchard defended its title at Palm Beach and ensured its status as the best team of the 2008 United States season. Once again the talent of Cambiaso (his presence means a title in the bag in every tournament he plays in), added to the work of ‘Nachi’ Heguy, ensured that the patron George Rawlings had the pleasure of lifting this prestigious cup for the second season in a row. It emerged before the final that this year could be the last time Cambiaso takes part in the US Open. Between him and victory stood Las Monjotas (Eduardo, Javier and Ignacio Novillo Astrada and Columbian patron Camilo Bautista), the most consistent of the season with a title (USPA Gold Cup) and a second place (CV Whitney). The decisive encounter fulfilled the expectations aroused before the game, and the large crowd at the main field of the International Polo Club was entertained. The first chukka was tit for tat, but from the second Crab Orchard started to make a difference in play and on the scoreboard in their quest to win the match.

The progress of the game was as follows: Crab Orchard: 3-3, 8-5, 10-7, 12-8, 13-11 and 15-12. Cambiaso and Heguy contributed seven goals each of the 15 scored by Crab Orchard, while Ignacio Novillo was the top scorer for Las Monjitas with six goals. Jeff Blake was named man of the match in the final and the prize for best horse went to Adolfo Cambiaso’s Sylvia. Pico Blanco, Ignacio Novillo’s horse, was named best specimen of the tournament. The Hall of Fame Subsidiary Cup was taken home by Orchard Hill (Steve Van Andel, Héctor Galindo, Lucas Criado and Jeff Hall), who overcame Bendabout by 11 goals to 10. The stars “After winning last year, we were the team to beat this time. I traded for Nachi Heguy and Jeff Blake and they sure became the Crab Orchard team. Nothing can compare to winning the US Open”, said George Rawlings, patron of Crab Orchard, on the official tournament website. “We missed a couple of goals at both ends early in the sixth and I think our horses were tired at the end when we committed those fouls”, said Eduardo Novillo Astrada of Las Monjitas.

Santa María vivió una animada primavera

Santa María Polo Club ha vivido una animada Temporada de Primavera, que se puso en juego en las canchas de Puente de Hierro, Río y Los Pinos durante los meses de marzo y abril para equipos de mediano (10-12 goles) y bajo handicap (2-5 goles). La intensa actividad y lo disputado de los torneos sirvieron como preámbulo para lo que será la Temporada de Verano, que este año llegará con varias novedades. El calendario de primavera contó con cuatro torneos que se fueron poniendo en juego sucesivamente en las distintas canchas con las que cuenta Santa María Polo Club. La temporada se abrió con el Torneo Mc Micking, con sede en Puente de Hierro, lo siguieron los tradicionales Memorial José Ignacio Domecq y Memorial Conde de Guaqui y el cierre lo puso el atractivo Abierto de Santa María. Tanto el bajo como el mediano handicap propusieron apasionantes duelos y una intensa rivalidad entre equipos, como fue el caso de La Clarita y Xie Xie en el bajo handicap, y de Scapa John Smith, Bisontes y Capial en el mediano handicap. l

Healstorm, campeón del XI Torneo Mc Micking

Healstorm derrotó 12 a 8 a Coyotes en la final y se llevó la XI edición del Torneo Mc Micking, que se puso en juego entre el 7 y 9 de marzo para equipos de 6 a 8 goles de handicap ,en las canchas de Puente de Hierro del Santa María Polo Club. El Torneo Mc Micking rinde tributo al militar y súbdito norteamericano Joseph McMicking, uno de los fundadores de Sotogrande en los años 60. Además de Healstrom y Coyotes, formaron parte del certamen los equipos de Santa María, Capial, Leones, John Smith y Beverley. El cuarteto de Healstrom, conformado por Sara Hale, Eddie Asker, Mario Gómez y Sebastián Downey, no hizo más que confirmar en el encuentro decisivo el gran nivel que mostró a lo largo de todo el torneo y se llevó merecidamente la copa de la XI edición del Torneo Mc Micking. En la final, disputada Sara Hale

al mediodía en la cancha 1 de Puente de Hierro, Healstorm dominó de punta a punta y terminó llevándose el título por una ventaja de cuatro goles (12-8) sobre Coyotes. El rival puso resistencia y llegó a incomodar en varios pasajes del partido a Healstorm, sobre todo en el segundo chukker, donde remontó una desventaja de dos goles, pero con el correr del encuentro se le hizo muy difícil contener el buen juego del ganador. El campeón inició su carrera hacia el título el viernes 7 con un triunfo ante Santa María por 8 a 5 y al día siguiente se sacó de encima con autoridad al cuarteto de Capial por 9 a 4, sellando así su pasaje a la final. En la final, las claves del campeón pasaron por el buen juego de Marito Gómez, que se hizo presente en el tanteador en varias ocasiones, y por el acertado planteo defensivo que permitió anular a las figuras de Coyotes, Iturrioz y Gariador. l

Scapa-John Smith ganó el XXIX Memorial José Ignacio Domecq

Scapa John Smith alcanzó su quinto título del Memorial José Ignacio Domecq, que se jugó del 14 al 23 de marzo, al vencer 13 a 12 en una emotiva final al equipo de Santa María. El cuarteto de Gabriel Aguirre, Michael Redding, Mateo Velasco y Manuel Crespo logró en este prestigioso torneo, el primero de los dos que alcanzó en la Temporada de Primavera, transformándose así en el equipo más laureado. El Memorial se celebra en homenaje a José Ignacio Domecq González, reconocido bodeguero y polista fallecido en 1997. Domecq llegó a tener cinco goles de hándicap y a sus 76 años aún jugaba con dos goles. El torneo, que se jugó en las canchas de Los Pinos y Río, contó con la participación de equipos de 2 a 5 goles de handicap y de 10 a 12 de handicap, que jugaron de forma simultánea. Del primero participaron seis conjuntos (KE-Tepeyac, Beverley, Santa Quiteria, La Clarita, Xie Xie y Auto Dex) al tiempo que para el nivel 10-12 goles fueron cinco

los cuartetos que lo disputaron (Santander, Capial, Santa María, Scapa John Smith e Isola). La gran final El partido decisivo entre Scapa John Smith y Santa María contó con un buen nivel de juego, poco roce y muchos goles. El encuentro, disputado en la cancha 1 de Río, fue disfrutado plenamente por el público que allí se dio cita. Tras el encuentro y el título alcanzado, dos de los capitanes de Scapa-John Smith valoraron para La Bocha el rendimiento del equipo y no ocultaron su alegría por la consagración. Gabriel Aguirre se mostró muy satisfecho por el triunfo, “el quinto que logramos en este torneo. Se ha jugado muy bien a lo largo de todo el torneo”. Por su parte, Michael Redding

comentó que “el nivel de juego fue impresionante” y aseguró que “los partidos con Santa María son muy lindos, tanto a nivel de juego como de caballos, que son los más altos de este torneo de 12 goles”. La Clarita, en el bajo La emoción también se puso de manifiesto en el bajo handicap. En esta categoría La Clarita se llevó el título al vencer en la final a Santa Quiteria por 7 a 6. De la mano de Eddie Asker y Marito Gómez, que lograron su segundo trofeo consecutivo, La Clarita dejó en claro en el Memorial Domecq que sería el equipo a vencer en la temporada de primavera. La entrega de premios del mediano y bajo handicap estuvo a cargo de Ignacio Domecq y Paquita Gavira. l

Capial triunfó en el Memorial Conde de Guaqui

En una reñida jornada final, que puso mayor emoción a la definición del torneo Memorial Conde de Guaqui, el cuarteto de Capial se llevó el mediano handicap, al tiempo que Xie Xie hizo lo propio en el bajo. El torneo se disputó del 28 al 30 de marzo con Puente de Hierro y Río como sede del torneo. Cuatro equipos, Scapa John Smith, Capial, Santa María y Bisontes, pelearon por el título en el mediano handicap (10-12 goles), en tanto que La Clarita, Ke-Tepeyac, Beverly, Xie Xie y San Enrique disputaron el bajo handicap. La paridad fue el común denominador en la ‘categoría’ 10 a 12 goles ya que tanto Capial como Bisontes llegaron a la jornada final con chances de acceder al título.

Ambos equipos protagonizaron una verdadera final en la cancha I de Río y dejaron en claro, por el buen juego exhibido, que la copa podía ser para cualquiera.

Finalmente fue para el cuarteto de Capial, compuesto por Carlos Piñal, Kave Atrak, Fermín Iturrioz y Rafa Jiménez, que se llevó el decisivo encuentro por 10-9. A segunda hora, Santa María cerró el torneo con un también disputado triunfo ante Scapa John Smith por 8 a 6. En el bajo handicap, y para no ser menos con la tónica de la jornada final, Xie Xie y La Clarita protagonizaron un partidazo. Gol a gol se fueron sucediendo los chukkers hasta que faltando poco menos de un minuto y con el marcador igualado en 9, Xie Xie alcanzó romper la paridad para llevarse el partido y la copa por 10-9. l

Navalagua,campeón del Abierto de Santa María

Navalagua venció en la final del mediano handicap (10-12 goles) a Bisontes por 14 a 9 y se adjudicó la XIII edición del Abierto de Santa María, que se disputó desde el viernes 4 al domingo 6 de abril en las canchas de Los Pinos y Río del Santa María Polo Club. En el bajo handicap (2-5 goles), copa que fue auspiciada por el Grupo HCP y La Bocha European Polo, La Clarita volvió a coronarse como el mejor de la categoría al derrotar 8-5 a Xie Xie en la definición. En el mediano handicap, el exitoso cuarteto conformado por Michael Redding, Mateo Velasco, Manuel Crespo y Gabriel Aguirre, que venía de llevarse el Memorial Domecq con el nombre de Scapa John Smith, volvió a subirse a lo más alto del podio, pero bajo la denominación de Navalagua. Confirmando el gran nivel exhibido durante la Temporada de Primavera del Santa María Polo Club, donde también peleó palmo a palmo la definición del Memorial Conde de Guaqui, el equipo de Redding, Velasco, Crespo y Aguirre rindió en gran forma durante todo el torneo

y sobre todo en la final, donde tuvo que vérselas ante Bisontes, otro de los grandes animadores de la Temporada de Primavera. Navalagua se llevó de forma más que merecida la final, y el trofeo, gracias a un favorable tanteador de 14 a 9. El partido decisivo fue muy atractivo y estuvo muy disputado hasta el cuarto chukker, donde Bisontes, (Javier Carabaza, Mario Gómez, Ricki Trujillo y Santiago Moyano), se mantuvo a tiro en el tanteador. Ambos equipos terminaron igualados a seis goles el tercer chukker y el cuarto se lo llevó Navalagua por apenas un gol de ventaja (9-8). Recién en el quinto chukker el campeón logró despegarse del tanteador y sacar una ventaja de cuatro goles (13-9), que a la postre fue decisiva y que terminó dándole el partido y el título por 14 a 9.

Previo a este encuentro, Santa María se quedó con el tercer puesto al vencer a Capial por 13 a 11. La Clarita, campeón Por el bajo handicap, torneo auspiciado por el Grupo HCP y La Bocha European Polo, La Clarita volvió a gritar campeón al derrotar en una nueva final a Xie Xie. Ambos equipos fueron los grandes protagonistas de la Temporada de Primavera en esta categoría y se repartieron los títulos de la misma. La Clarita ratificó el buen momento de sus integrantes (Eddie Asker, Marito Gómez y los hermanos Mathias) al ganar la final por 8 a 5 y sumar así su segundo título en la Temporada de Primavera, ya que anteriormente ganaron el Memorial Domecq y fueron finalistas del Memorial Conde de Guaqui. l

Santa María enjoys lively spring season

Santa María Polo Club has enjoyed a lively Spring Season, with the action taking place on the Puente de Hierro, Río and Los Pinos fields in March and April, with tournaments for medium-handicap teams (10 to 12 goals) and low-handicap teams (2 to 5 goals). The intense activity and competitiveness of the tournaments acted as a prelude to the Summer Season, which this year arrives with several innovations. The spring schedule included four tournaments which took place successively on Santa María Polo Club’s various fields. The season began with the McMicking Tournament, held at Puente de Hierro, which was followed by the customary Memorial José Ignacio Domecq and Memorial Conde de Guaqui competitions; the season was brought to a close with the Santa María Open. In both the low- and medium-handicap competitions there were some enthralling encounters and intense rivalry between teams, as was the case of La Clarita and Xie Xie in the low handicap, and Scapa John Smith, Bisontes and Capial in the medium handicap. l

Healstorm, champion th of the 11 McMicking tournament

Healstorm defeated Coyotes by 12 goals to 8 in the final and took the title in the 11th McMicking Tournament for 6- to 8-goal handicap teams played from March 7 to 9 on Santa María Polo Club’s Puente de Hierro fields. The McMicking Tournament pays tribute to American military man Joseph McMicking, one of the founders of Sotogrande in the 1960s. In addition to Healstrom and Coyotes, the competition involved the Santa María, Capial, Leones, John Smith and Beverley teams. In the final encounter the Healstrom quartet, made up of Sara Hale, Eddie Asker, Mario Gómez and Sebastián Downey reaffirmed the high standard of play that they had demonstrated throughout the entire competition, making them the deserving winners of the cup in the 11th McMicking Tournament. In the final, held at midday on Field 1 of Puente de Hierro, Healstorm dominated from start to finish and ended the

match with victory by a four-goal lead (12-8) over Coyotes. Their rivals resisted and managed to make Healstorm feel uncomfortable at several stages during the match, particularly in the second chukka when they made up a two-goal deficit, but as the game went on it became more and more difficult to contain the good play of the winners. The champions began their road to victory on Friday 7 with a win over Santa María by 8 goals to 5 and on the next day they imposed themselves authoritatively on Capial by 9 goals to 4, securing their passage to the final. In the final the key factors for the champions included the good play of Marito Gómez, who scored on several occasions, and a solid defence which allowed them to keep the lid on Coyotes stars Iturrioz and Gariador. l

Scapa-John Smith th wins 29 Memorial José Ignacio Domecq

Scapa John Smith achieved its fifth title in the Memorial José Ignacio Domecq, played from March 14 to 23, with victory by 13 goals to 12 against the Santa María team in an exciting final. With victory in this prestigious tournament the quartet of Gabriel Aguirre, Michael Redding, Mateo Velasco and Manuel Crespo secured the first of its two Spring Season wins, making it the most successful team. The Memorial is held in tribute to José Ignacio Domecq González, the renowned wine-producer and polo player who died in 1997. Domecq reached a five-goal handicap and at 76 years of age he still played with a two-goal handicap. The tournament, played on the Los Pinos and Río fields, involved 2- to 5-goal and 10- to 12-goal handicap teams playing simultaneously. Six teams took part in the 2- to 5-goal handicap competition (KETepeyac, Beverley, Santa Quiteria, La Clarita, Xie Xie and Auto Dex), while in the 10- to 12-goal there were five quartets taking part

(Santander, Capial, Santa María, Scapa John Smith and Isola). The grand final The decisive match between Scapa John Smith and Santa María featured a high standard of play, little friction and many goals. The encounter, held on Field 1 of Río, was thoroughly enjoyed by the crowd in attendance. Following the match and with their title in the bag, two of Scapa-John Smith’s captains gave La Bocha their views on the performance of their team and were unable to hide their joy. Gabriel Aguirre expressed great satisfaction at the victory, “our fifth in this tournament. We played very well throughout the competition”. Michael Redding said that “the standard of play was amazing” and he asserted that “the matches with

Santa María are very attractive, both because of the standard of play and the horses, which are the best in this 12-goal tournament”. La Clarita, in the low handicap The excitement was also present in the low handicap. In this category La Clarita secured the title by winning in the final against Santa Quiteria by 7 goals to 6. Thanks to Eddie Asker and Marito Gómez, who achieved their second victory in a row, La Clarita made it clear in the Memorial Domecq that they would be the team to beat in the Spring Season. The prize-giving ceremony for the medium- and high-handicap competitions was presented by Ignacio Domecq and Paquita Gavira. l

Navalagua, champion of the Santa María Open

Navalagua was victorious in the final of the medium-handicap competition (10-12 goals) against Bisontes by 14 goals to 9 and was proclaimed champion of the 13th Santa María Open held from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 of April at Santa María Polo Club’s Los Pinos and Río fields. In the low-handicap competition (2- to 5-goal), a cup that was sponsored by Grupo HCP and La Bocha European Polo, La Clarita was once again crowned champion in the category after beating Xie Xie by 8 goals to 5 in the final. In the medium-handicap, the successful quartet made up of Michael Redding, Mateo Velasco, Manuel Crespo and Gabriel Aguirre, which had just won the Memorial Domecq going by the name of Scapa John Smith, retained its position at the top of the podium but under the name Navalagua. Reaffirming the high standard displayed in Santa María Polo Club’s Spring Season, in which it also fought head to head in the final of the Memorial Conde de Guaqui, the team made up of Redding, Velasco, Crespo and Aguirre was in great form throughout

the tournament, and particularly in the final in which it was up against Bisontes, another of the encouraging sides over the spring.

Prior to this encounter, Santa María finished the tournament in third place after beating Capial by 13 goals to 11.

Navalagua was a more than deserving winner in the final, and lifted the trophy with a winning score of 14 goals to 9. The decisive match was very attractive and hard-fought until the fourth chukka, when Bisontes (Javier Carabaza, Mario Gómez, Ricki Trujillo and Santiago Moyano), still had the opposition in its sights. The teams ended the third chukka on six goals each and in the fourth Navalagua got ahead by just one (9-8).

La Clarita, champion

Only in the fifth chukka did the champions manage to get away from their rivals and gain a four-goal lead (13-9), which in the end was decisive and led to victory and the title by 14 goals to 9.

In the low-handicap competition, a tournament sponsored by Grupo HCP and La Bocha European Polo, La Clarita was once again champion after beating Xie Xie in another final. Both teams played a leading role in the Spring Season in this category and shared the titles between them. La Clarita reaffirmed the good form of its team members (Eddie Asker, Marito Gómez and the Mathias brothers) by winning the final by 8 goals to 5 and notching up their second title of the Spring Season, having previously won the Memorial Domecq; they were also finalists in the Memorial Conde de Guaqui. l

On a hard-fought final day, which provided the tournament with a great deal of excitement, the Capial quartet lifted the Memorial Conde de Guaqui trophy in the medium handicap while Xie Xie was the winner in the low handicap. The tournament was held from March 28 to 30 with Puente de Hierro and Río as the venues. Four teams, Scapa John Smith, Capial, Santa María and Bisontes, fought for the title in the medium-handicap competition (10- to 12-goal), while La Clarita, Ke-Tepeyac, Beverly, Xie Xie and San Enrique competed in the low handicap.

John Smith, winning by 8 goals to 6. In the low handicap, following the prevailing trend on the final day, Xie Xie and La Clarita competed in a brilliant match. They exchanged goals throughout the chukkas until with less than a minute left and with the scoreboard level on 9-9, Xie Xie managed to get ahead to win the match and the cup by 10 goals to 9. l

Parity was the common denominator in the 10-12 goal category, with both Capial and Bisontes reaching the final day with a chance of securing the title. Both teams staged a superb final on Field 1 of Río and made it clear, with the good play on show, that the cup could have gone to either of them. In the end it went to the Capial quartet, made up of Carlos Piñal, Kave Atrak, Fermín Iturrioz and Rafa Jiménez, who won the decisive encounter by 10 goals to 9. The Los Pinos Pavilion installation is fully underway and what will be the main venue for the Santa María Polo Club summer tournaments is already taking shape. It will have two floors of 1,250 m² each and will provide restaurant, bar, Wi-Fi services etc. The building will have air-conditioning, making it the ideal place for enjoying polo of the highest standard, the polo which visits Sotogrande every summer.

The upper floor of the Los Pinos Pavilion will be reserved for members, sponsors and patrons, and the lower area will have an extensive shopping area open to the public. The new pavilion amounts to the creation of a great facility which did not exist in the area, ideal for events and gatherings related to polo, as well as sponsorship and marketing activities for the sport, and it will be open to a wide range of business sectors which can

use polo as a prestigious media and brand concept. The Pavilion will have a capacity of 800 people and the total investment will hover around the 2.3 million euros mark. Guards Polo Club y Cowdray Park Polo Club vuelven a ser los principales escenarios de la gran movida polística mundial. La disputa de The Queen´s Mother Centenary Tournament, para equipos de 12 a 15 goles, será el torneo que abra el telón de la temporada inglesa. El mismo se disputará en Guards y servirá como preámbulo para The Vivari Queen´s Cup Tournament, reservado para equipos de 17 a 22 goles de handicap, y cuya final está prevista para el 15 de junio. Loro Piana intentará revalidar el título alcanzado el año pasado tras una disputadísima final en la cual derrotó a Ellerston White por 12 a 11. Pero las emociones continuarán en el mes de mayo ya que reconocido certamen Indian Empire Shield (15-18 goles) tiene prevista su disputa del 2 al 23 de ese mes en Coworth Park Polo Club. La historia comenzó en 1956 con el British Open Championships y a partir de allí los mejores jugadores del mundo desfilaron por el atractivo y glamouroso club de Cowdray para ir en busca del oro más preciado. Entre los más ilustres polistas que alzaron la Gold Cup figuran los renombrados apellidos Heguy, Gracida, Tanoira, el Príncipe Philip, Barrantes, Pieres y más recientemente Merlos, Cambiaso, Novillo Astrada y las nuevas generaciones de Merlos, Heguy y Pieres, por citar sólo algunos nombres.

El último campeón fue Lechuza Caracas, cuarteto integrado por Víctor Vargas, Pite Merlos, Sebastián Merlos y Henry Fisher. Lechuza Caracas venció en una disputada y accidentada final a Loro Piana por 11 a 10. Será una final muy recordada ya que los equipos dieron todo de sí y la intensidad del juego de esta gran final derivó a que los dos cuartetos deban apelar a sustitutos durante el lapso del encuentro. Primero fue Loro Piana quién debió reemplazar al uruguayo David ‘Pelón’ Stirling por una lesión en la mano. Su sustituto fue el argentino Pablo Jaurechte. Por el lado de Lechuza Caracas, Pite Merlos tuvo que dejar el partido debido a una caída y fue sustituído por su hermano Agustín. Sí, desde que arranqué en el polo. Porque si no, no hago nada y así me manejo en la vida. Si no logro lo que quiero, no hago nada. Trabajo todo el día para alcanzar lo que busco y quiero. No me gusta perder. Por eso siempre

imaginé que esto me iba a suceder. ¿El polo encontró a Castagnola o fue al revés? Castagnola va en busca del polo. Y fue gracias a mi viejo, que quería que jugara al polo y ahí arrancamos. Nos queríamos hacer socios de algunos clubes y no nos dejaban hasta que fui a lo de Willy Fiorito, en Cañuelas, que nos abrió las puertas. Allí estuve un par de meses y en ese tiempo conocí a mi suegro, Adolfo Cambiaso y a su hijo Adolfito, del cual somos amigos desde pequeños. ¿Cómo fueron esos comienzos? Duros, muy duros. Con muy pocos caballos, que en su mayoría eran los de la Escuela de polo de mi suegro. Pero de alguna manera siempre se empieza. ¿En qué piensa cuando recuerda ese pasado y ahora ve un presente que deportivamente es exitoso, tanto personal como de equipo y que el proyecto La Dolfina está consolidado?

En que queremos que siga creciendo. Queremos que La Dolfina siga potenciándose comercialmente, como club y como cancha y que deportivamente siga cosechando éxitos. Todo para que nuestros hijos la puedan disfrutar. ¿Le gustaría que sus hijos sigan su mismo camino? Obvio y es lo que aspiro. Ya los estoy preparando para ello, pero tampoco se les va a hacer muy difícil porque vienen viviendo todo desde chicos. Se levantan en la mañana y están viendo prácticas de 40 goles, están en el palenque de La Dolfina en cada campeonato, ven una estructura que ya está sólida. Y todo ello les facilita un poco las cosas de cara al futuro. ¿Disfrutó más la consagración del último Abierto por todo lo que se dijo en lo previo, de que jugaban mal o de que eran “Cambiaso dependientes”? Sí, dijeron todo eso, pero se tuvieron que callar al final. Quedó bien claro que si La Dolfina mañana necesita que la pelota la tenga Adolfito, va a ser así.

Que si La Dolfina necesita abrir el juego, también va a ser así y si La Dolfina tiene que ir a bloquear o jugar al polo cerrado, también lo va a hacer. Tenemos muchas variantes y la estrategia es parte del juego. Hemos ganado partidos, torneos y quedó demostrado que el único equipo que jugó a correr en Palermo fue La Dolfina, los demás querían guardar el juego. Por eso le pusieron 40 goles a La Dolfina. Es un premio por ganar tres años seguidos Palermo. Mira que es un logro muy importante, y merecido, porque con el nivel de polo que hay hoy en día es muy difícil ganar tres años seguidos. ¿Qué equipo cree que le puede hacer más fuerza a La Dolfina en el próximo Abierto? Nosotros no pensamos en un equipo. Todos son buenos y hay que jugarles a todos por igual. De repente con algunos cambiamos la táctica, pero pensamos más en nosotros que en los demás. No somos de fijarnos en los rivales sino en mejorar nosotros. Jugamos mucho por intuición. Si vamos a chukker suplementario no decimos “hagamos esto o lo otro”, nos alentamos, salimos a ganar y a divertirnos dentro de la cancha. Además tenemos mentalidad y sabemos que si llegamos al suplementario, y no lo digo por agrandado ni nada, hacemos la diferencia. Y creo que mal no nos ha ido. La caballada y su buena preparación inciden cada vez más en el nivel de juego ¿cuánto le lleva a La Dolfina prepararla? La caballada que vieron en la última

edición del Abierto de Palermo fueron 10 años mínimo de crianza. Pero la realidad indica que tenés que estar todo el año con los caballos, cuidarlos, tratarlos, hacer de todo un poco. Pero por suerte ya lo sabemos hacer y lo tenemos bastante claro en ese sentido. Tenemos un muy buen equipo para ello y eso ayuda y facilita mucho las cosas.

¿Cómo planifica la temporada? ¿Busca participar en muchos torneos o trata de seleccionar? Ahora no viajo tanto, cada vez menos. Antes sí, viajaba hasta 10 veces al año, pero ahora lo hago mucho menos y le doy importancia al Abierto Argentino, la Copa de la Reina en Inglaterra y la Copa de Oro en Sotogrande. Después trato de seleccionar y disfrutar un poco más de todo. ¿Cómo viene la temporada 2008 para Castagnola? Voy a jugar el Polo Tour en Argentina, también la Copa República Argentina y todo lo que se pueda jugar con patrones. Después estaré dedicándome un poco a la caballada nueva y luego viajaré a principios de mayo a Inglaterra y después de los tres meses en Inglaterra me voy para Sotogrande. ¿El intenso calendario que tiene el polo a nivel internacional, cree que sirve para abrirles el juego a más polistas, de mediano handicap por ejemplo, o satura mucho el deporte? Es una combinación de las dos. Pero creo que está todo bien porque el polo estalla para arriba. Desde que nosotros empezamos a ser profesionales a este

The memory of his last triumph with La Dolfina, his team, in the 2007 Palermo Open, is still fresh in the mind; winning the most important tournament in the world on six occasions and consecutively over the past three years is not an everyday occurrence. But Bartolomé ‘Lolo’ Castagnola is not surprised by this enviable, and welldeserved, track record. “It’s the result of a long trek on which there has been much sacrifice, and it’s also a way of reaffirming everything we have done in polo”, he asserts with the same conviction with which he handles himself on the polo field, as he walks though the snow of the exclusive ski resort of St. Moritz (Switzerland), where he is playing in the Cartier Cup. There, surrounded by mountains and, above all, an abundance of glamour, which ‘Lolo’ takes no notice of, La Bocha European Polo had the opportunity to talk to him about the past, present and future of his career and of Argentine and world polo, among many other issues. “I was not surprised to win the Open for the third year running”, states the 10goal handicap player with the La Dolfina number four branded on his back for ever. “But although there are still things to do,

we enter the history books as one of the four great teams of all time, and this is an enormous source of satisfaction in our lives”, he adds. Did you ever imagine you would reach such great heights? Yes, since I started playing polo. Otherwise I wouldn’t bother; this is how I approach life. If I don’t get what I want, I don’t do anything at all. I work all day to achieve what I want. I don’t like to lose. This is why I always imagined it would happen to me. Did polo find Castagnola or vice versa? Castagnoloa went in search of polo. And it was thanks to my old man, who wanted me to play polo; that’s how I started out. We wanted to become members of some clubs and they wouldn’t let us in, until I went to Willy Fiorito, in Cañuelas, which opened its doors to us. I was there for a couple of months and in that time I met my father-in-law, Adolfo Cambiaso, and his son Adolfito, who I have been friends with since we were small. What were those early years like? Tough, very tough. With very few horses,

most of which belonged to my father-inlaw’s polo school. But you have to start some way or another. What do you think when you remember this past and now see a present in which you have had sporting success, both personally and as a team, and in which the La Dolfina team has consolidated itself? I think about the fact that we want to continue growing. We want La Dolfina to continue to get stronger commercially, as a club and as a polo field, and for it to continue to yield results as a sporting unit. This is all so that our children can enjoy it. Would you like your children to follow in your footsteps? Obviously, that is what I aspire to. I am already preparing them for it, but it won’t be very difficult for them because they have been living amongst it since they were tiny. They get up in the morning and watch 40-goal practice sessions; they are on La Dolfina’s bench in every championship and they see a structure that is now solid. All of this makes things a bit easier in the future. Was the last victory in the Open

sweeter due to everything that was said in the previous tournament, that you were playing badly or that you were “Cambiaso-dependant”? Yes, they said all of those things, but in the end they had to keep quiet. It was made very clear that if tomorrow La Dolfina needs Adolfito in the side, then that’s what will happen. If La Dolfina needs to open up its game, then that’s also what will happen, and if La Dolfina has to block or play tight polo, it will do so. There are many variables and strategy is part of the game. We have won matches and tournaments and shown that the only team which really went for it in Palermo was La Dolfina, the rest wanted to play cautiously. This is why La Dolfina was given a 40-goal handicap. It’s a reward for winning in Palermo three years in a row. It’s an important achievement, and welldeserved, because with the standard of polo in this day and age it’s very difficult to win three years running.

“If we reach an extra chukka, we make the difference” rivals, we concentrate on improving our own game. To a large extent we play intuitively. If we go into an extra chukka we say “lets do this or that”, we get ourselves going and we go out to win and enjoy ourselves on the field. We are strong mentally and we know that if we reach an extra chukka, and I’m not saying this to boast, we make the difference. It hasn’t gone bad for us.

Open were at least 10 years old. But the reality is that you have to be with the horses all year round, looking after them, treating them, doing a bit of everything. But fortunately we know what to do and have things pretty clear in this sense. We have a very good team for the purpose and this helps and makes things easier.

Castagnola? I am going to play in the Polo Tour in Argentina, as well as in the Copa República Argentina and everything that can be played with patrons. Then I will be focussing on the new horses and in early May I will travel to England; after three months in England I will head to Sotogrande.

How do you plan the season? Do you try to take part in a lot of tournaments or are you selective? I don’t travel so much any more; I travel less and less. I used to travel 10 times a year, but now I do so a lot less and focus on the Argentine Open, the Queen’s Cup in England and the Gold Cup in Sotogrande. Aside from this I try to be selective and enjoy everything a bit more.

Do you think the intense schedule in international polo helps to open the game to more polo players, of medium handicap for example, or does it saturate the sport a lot? It’s a combination of both. But I think it’s all for the best because polo is on the up. Since we became professionals polo has changed a great deal. But it’s better this way; the more professionalism there is in polo, for more the sport will improve.

How is the 2008 season looking for

In what way do you think your experience will influence the new generations of polo players? I think it’s a lure for more people to get into polo and we want this to grow and continue improving. We have already left our mark on polo, but now we want this mark, which is called La Dolfina, to continue working and to do it well. What is the recipe for becoming a 10goal handicap? Sacrifice, effort, humility and learning about the sport every day. Will La Dolfina be around for a while? Yes, La Dolfina is for ever. Will there be a fourth title for La Dolfina? La temporada 2007 quedó atrás y lo hizo con una confirmación: La Dolfina es el mejor equipo del mundo, Adolfo Cambiaso es el mejor jugador de polo en la actualidad y sus compañeros dejan cada vez más en claro que La Dolfina es, justamente, un EQUIPO. La historia de la ‘Cambiaso Dependencia’ ya no cuela y para pruebas basta repasar la actuación de Mariano Aguerre, nombrado mejor jugador de la Final del Abierto Argentino, y Lucas Monteverde, autor del gol decisivo del título del ‘tricampeonato’, y de Bartolomé Castagnola. Donough llegó al Abierto con los títulos de Tortugas y Hurlingham a cuestas, pero no logró llevarse la Triple Corona. La Dolfina fue su gran verdugo en ambas. Por eso desde el bunker de Ellerstina, con Gonzalo Pieres y Guillermo Gracida a la cabeza, vienen planificando desde hace tiempo la temporada 2008. El primer paso que dieron fue incorporar a Juan Martín Nero al equipo. El ex jugador de Chapa Uno lucirá la camiseta negra durante este año, sustituyendo a Matías Mac Donough. De esta forma Ellerstina quedará integrado por Pablo Mac Donough, Gonzalo y Facundo Pieres y Juan Martín Nero. La otra gran movida llega de la mano de los integrantes de Chapa Uno que, lamentablemente, por todo lo que hicieron y significan para el polo argentino y mundial, no seguirán juntos (ver nota aparte). Sus primos, Indios Chapalefú II, también cambian e incorporaron a Juan Ignacio ‘Pite’ Merlos a sus filas para retomar los lauros de Palermo, que no hace mucho dejaron de conseguir. Merlos llega en reemplazo de Lucas Criado aceptando una invitación de Eduardo Heguy por lo que se sumará a Chapalefú junto al “Ruso”, “Pepe” y “Nachi” Heguy. “Después de jugar catorce años junto con mi hermano Sebastián, decidimos plantearnos nuevos objetivos y cambiar de aire”, declaró Pite Merlos acerca de su cambio de equipo. “Siempre me gustó Chapaleufú II como equipo. On the contrary, the La Dolfina Empire is venerated; their position is longed for and to a certain degree envied. And it’s little wonder, because La Dolfina has been forging its empire for many years, on the battlefield (Field 1 of Palermo, the Cathedral of Polo) and, above all, off it, at the Cañuelas fortress. There they prepare their faithful warriors (the horses) with dedication, experience and care, so that the empire expands and continues to make history. But that’s another story (or rather, another chapter) because the enemies lie in wait, planning and coercing to bring down the La Dolfina empire. And this, to a large extent, is the task of the teams that will take part in the 2008 Triple Crown, in their attempt to topple King Cambiaso and his followers.

In these two seasons the team of the brothers Gonzalo and Facundo Pieres and Pablo and Matías Mac Donough reached the Open with the Tortugas and Hurlingham titles in the bag, but were unable to secure the Triple Crown. La Dolfina was its scourge on both occasions. This is why from the Ellerstina bunker, with Gonzalo Pieres and Guillermo Gracida at the helm, they have been planning for the 2008 season for some time. Merlos arrives to replace Lucas Criado, accepting an invitation from Eduardo Heguy to join Chapalefú alongside ‘Ruso’, ‘Pepe’ and ‘Nachi’ Heguy. “After playing for 14 years alongside my brother Sebastián, in Argentina, we decided to set ourselves new objectives and have a change of scene”, said Pite Merlos on his move. “I have always liked Chapaleufú II as a team. From outside, the fighting spirit and commitment which they brought to each match was admirable. They give off an image of a solid and very close-knit unit” he added. The ‘other’ Merlos, Sebastián and Agustín,

have also added new faces to their team, and one of them is none other than Marcos Heguy. Fundada en 1995 de la mano de Cambiaso y con la ayuda de su cuñado Bartolomé Castagnola, La Dolfina se ha transformado en el ‘laboratorio’ del éxito. ‘rienda corta’ cada paso que allí se da y todo lo que sucede o deja de suceder. De ahí que no resulte raro ver a Cambiaso yendo de un lado para el otro en una moto de baja cilindrada, supervisando hasta el más mínimo detalle de lo que allí sucede o deja de suceder. El crack del polo mundial inicia sus jornadas en La Dolfina temprano en la mañana, mate de por medio con sus colaboradores, con los cuáles planifica el día, entre los que por supuesto está siempre en la agenda una práctica de polo. Esas ‘prácticas’ generalmente cuentan con figuras de la talla de Lucas Monteverde, Bartolomé Castagnola y Mariano Aguerre, sus compañeros de equipo, además de otras figuras del polo argentino. Un

El rumor corrió como reguero de pólvora durante la disputa de la última edición del Abierto Argentino de Polo. A medida que pasaban las semanas cobraba intensidad, pero no hubo confirmación oficial ni extraoficial. Tampoco se insistió mucho sobre el tema, ya que era una noticia que nadie quería escuchar. Más allá de simpatías con uno u otro equipo, Indios Chapalefú I forma parte importante de la historia del polo argentino y su formación, con variantes a lo largo de los años, pero con una estructura tan firme como la del apellido Heguy, es un clásico en cada temporada de la Triple Corona argentina. Nadie quería que llegase este momento. Nadie quería escucharlo de boca de sus protagonistas, ni nadie quería que Marcos, Horacio y Bautista se separen. Pero esa hora llegó y hoy se puede decir, con todo el pesar, que Indios Chapalefú I, o Chapa Uno, como terminó llamándose en los últimos años, es historia. La prensa argentina insistió en Palermo sobre si era o no el último Abierto de Indios Chapalefú I y si bien Horacio y Bautista deslizaron esa probabilidad, ninguno la confirmó. Hasta que saltó el menor de los Heguy y declaró : “Para mí, Chapa Uno terminó”. En enero, el diario argentino La Nación, publicaba sus palabras: “Vamos poniéndonos más viejos, algo hay que cambiar”, agregó. A partir de ahí ya no quedaron dudas, era el fin de Chapa Uno. Los hermanos Marcos, Horacio y Bautista no jugarían juntos, al menos los tres, en la próxima temporada. Tras la confesión de Bautista, que se dio en Bariloche tras una exhibición entre Chapa Uno y La Aguada, por cierto la última de los hermanos Heguy, sólo bastó esperar los detalles de tan importante decisión.

Los que buscaban tela para cortar se quedaron con las ganas, ya que no hubo anuncio oficial ni conferencia de prensa ni nada que se le parezca y eso que se ponía fin a uno de los equipos más exitosos y de mayor aceptación popular de la historia del polo argentino. “No le veo... No le veo, ya mucho futuro a seguir jugando con mis hermanos”, agregó Bautista al respecto a La Nación, confirmando que no había mucho más para decir y que la separación, tras 20 años jugando juntos la temporada argentina, ya estaba consumada. A partir de que la separación fue ‘oficializada’, la historia pasó a otro capítulo y las preguntas cambiaron de sentido. Ya no fue más ¿se separan o no los Chapa? Sino que la interrogante ahora era ¿jugarán los tres por separado o seguirán Marcos y Horacito juntos? ¿Qué equipo armará Bauti? Las incógnitas también están ya reveladas y para la temporada 2008, Marcos, Horacio y Bautista seguirán caminos distintos. Marcos se une a los hermanos Sebastián y Agustín Merlos en su nuevo equipo para la Triple Corona 2008 y en el cual también estará presente Santiago Chavanne. Por su parte, Bautista también tiene ya equipo y nombre para el mismo. Se llamará Black Watch y junto a él estarán Matías Mac Donough, Francisco De Narváez e Ignacio Figueras. Al que no se le conoce equipo, al menos oficialmente, es a Horacio Heguy. Pero tal como él mismo se encargó de aclarar, cuando Chapa Uno culminó su participación en el último Abierto de Palermo, estará presente en la próxima temporada. “No va a cambiar mucho. El equipo de Indios Chapalefú I se formó en 1983 de la mano de Horacio Heguy padre, Alberto, Gonzalo y Horacito. El primer título llegó dos años más tarde en Los Indios y Tortugas con una formación integrada por Horacio Heguy padre, Gonzalo, Horacito y Marcos.

En 1986 y ya sin la presencia de Horacio padre, llega el primer título del Abierto Argentino de la mano de Marcos, Gonzalo, Horacito y Alejandro Garrahan. Dos años más tarde hace su presentación en el equipo el más joven de los hermanos Heguy, Bautista, que ocupa el lugar de Garrahan. Los Heguy empiezan a hacer historia al ser el primer cuarteto de hermanos en llevarse el título del Abierto Argentino. Fue en 1991 y un año más tarde vuelven a alcanzar la gloria y con el handicap perfecto: 40 goles. En 1993 logran su tercer Abierto de forma consecutiva y en 1995 llega su quinta consagración y

con el valor agregado de que Horacio jugó el torneo pese a que meses antes perdió la visión de su ojo derecho en un accidente. El sexto título de Palermo llega en el 2001, un año después de la muerte de Gonzalo en un accidente automovilístico. En el 2006 Indios Chapalefú I pasa a denominarse Chapa Uno y un año más tarde juegan su última temporada en Argentina juntos. En total Indios Chapalefú I logró 14 títulos de la Triple Corona de Argentina, tres copas en Los Indios y Tortugas, 5 en Hurlingham y seis en el Abierto Argentino en Palermo. l

The rumour spread like wildfire during the latest Argentine Polo Open. As the weeks went by it became more intense, but there was no official or unofficial confirmation. Nor was the matter insisted upon much, as it was news that nobody wanted to hear. Beyond the sympathies of the other teams, Indios Chapalefú I is an important part of the history of Argentine polo and its line-up, which has varied over the years but with a solid structure provided by the Heguy surname, is a classic in every Argentine Triple Crown. Nobody wanted this moment to arrive. Nobody wanted to hear it from the mouths of the players themselves and nobody wanted Marcos, Horacio and Bautista to seperate. But the time came and now we can say, with great regret, that Indio Chapalefú I, or Chapa Uno, as it has become known in recent years, is now history. At Palermo there was intense speculation in the Argentine press as to whether it would be Indios Chapalefú I’s last Open or not, and although Horacio and Bautista hinted at this probability, nobody confirmed it. At last the youngest of the Heguys gave way and declared: “For me, Chapa Uno is over”. In January the Argentine newspaper La Nación published his words: “We are getting older, something has to change”, he added. From then on there were no longer any doubts: it was the end of Chapa Uno. The brothers Marcos, Horacio and Bautista would not play together, at least not the three of them, the following season. Following Bautista’s confession, which was made in Bariloche after an exhibition match between Chapa Uno and La Aguada, the last game played by the Heguy brothers as a team, all that was left to do was to wait for the details

of this important decision. Those looking for gossip were left wanting, as there was no official announcement, press conference or anything of the like, even though one of the most successful and popular teams in the history of Argentine polo was being brought to an end. “I no longer see… I no longer see much future in playing alongside my brothers”, Bautista said to La Nación, confirming that there was not much more to say and that the separation, after 20 years playing together in the Argentine season, had already been decided. separate stories

Once the separation was made official, the story moved on to another chapter, and the questions changed tack. The question was no longer whether Chapa would separate or not. Now it was whether the three would play separately or whether Marcos and Horacito would stay together. What team would Bauti set up? Es especial por donde se lo mire, se lo conozca o no. Esa condición hace que la gente se congregue alrededor de él y que sea motivo de conversación cada vez que se hace presente. Logra que política, economía y deportes vayan de la mano en cada conversación mientras se haga presente en una reunión. Como si ello fuera poco, también une, en torno suyo, a gente de todas las clases sociales. Lo curioso de todo esto es que esas bondades no pertenecen a una persona sino a una bebida, infusión, o como se la quiera describir, denominada ‘mate’. La historia dice que esta bebida se remonta a la época de los indios guaraníes, que consumían hojas de yerba a la que llamaban Caá.

Con la llegada de los españoles al continente americano, éstos comenzaron a ingerirlo y le llamaron hierba del Paraguay o yerba. Dicen al respecto los antiguos documentos que los que bebían esta yerba, españoles e indios, vendían sus frazadas y ropas para comprarla cuando no tenían con qué y que cuando les faltaba “desfallecen y dicen que no pueden vivir. Todos los indios la toman antes que amanezca y todas las veces que la tienen cuando trabajan, aunque no coman, con sólo la yerba se sustentan y se avivan las fuerzas para trabajar de nuevo”. La yerba mate pasa a ser la principal fuente de ingreso de los jesuitas, que una vez obtenido el permiso para comercializar el producto en 1645 comienzan a cultivarlo a fines del siglo XVII en las cercanías de

las reducciones. A mediados del siglo XVIII el mate va imponiéndose en todas las clases sociales y cuando el mate comienza a tomarse en las casas, sobre todo en países como Argentina, Paraguay, Brasil y Uruguay, cada familia tiene una cebadora de mate y a veces hasta dos, una para el mate dulce y otra para el amargo. La producción de la yerba fue adquiriendo cada vez más importancia con el correr de los años y su industria tuvo un gran impulso, sobre todo en el siglo XX. En tiempos más recientes su producción, por ejemplo en el año 2005, ascendía a 2500 millones de kilos. Si bien el consumo más importante abarca Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, sur de Chile y sur de Brasil, también se exporta a países del cercano Oriente y en menor

proporción a Europa, Asia y otras naciones americanas. Infusión y juego

El Polo no fue, ni es, ajeno a la masiva tendencia del consumo del mate. Es más, pese a su condición de deporte ‘glamouroso’, tiene una estrecha relación con el mate, más identificado con las clases ‘populares’. De ahí lo mencionado al principio del reportaje sobre su ‘condición especial’. Polistas y petiseros dejan de lado su relación de jefe-empleado cuando hay un mate de por medio. Como decían los antiguos ‘paisanos’ en Sudamérica, “el mate iguala a todos en la ronda, da el tiempo para hablar y el respiro para escuchar”. Por ello no es extraño ver, sobre todo por la mañana o a la caída del sol, a jugadores y petiseros en una gran ronda, fuego mediante si hace frío, compartiendo el ritual del mate. Adolfo Cambiaso, el mejor polista del mundo en la actualidad, es un gran ‘aficionado’ al mate. Es más, cada jornada la inicia con el ritual del mate. Y lo hace compartiéndolo con sus petiseros. Él mismo lo afirma en cada nota en la que habla de sus jornadas en La Dolfina, su estancia, ubicada en Cañuelas, a unos 108

100 km de la ciudad de Buenos Aires. “Mi rutina comienza a las 8, voy a tomar mate con los petiseros y ahí organizo el día. Después taqueo y paso días enteros practicando con mis compañeros de La Dolfina”. Pero no sólo el número uno de La Dolfina es un fiel ‘amigo’ del mate, sino que la gran mayoría de los polistas, argentinos sobre todo, llevan un mate y termo debajo del brazo y comienzan su día con una ‘mateada’ con sus petiseros.

Por ello no es extraño ver en Palermo, la mismísima Catedral del polo mundial, a espectadores, jugadores y petiseros con termo y mate en mano, como La Bocha European Polo pudo constatar en las ediciones a las cuáles asistió del Abierto Argentino. Tanto para jugadores como petiseros,

el mate es un fiel compañero de tareas y ratos de ocio, por ello la rutina de preparar el mate se repite día tras día y hasta tres veces en una misma jornada. Kilos de yerba, mate y termo, generalmente incluidos en una matera, son tan imprescindibles como tacos, cascos y monturas en cada una de las largas expediciones que los polistas hacen alrededor de mundo. Polistas argentinos, uruguayos y chilenos lo llevan consigo como si fuese una maleta más y por estos tiempos en los aeropuertos no tienen inconveniente en subirlos al avión. El Mate y sus propiedades

El primer mate que se usó fue el fruto de una planta trepadora, la Lagenaria Vulgaris. Este fruto llamado calabaza una vez seco es cortado a la altura del estrangulamiento y ahuecado. Para diferenciar y embellecer la calabaza se le grabaron o pintaron monogramas, cruces, fetiches, escudos y símbolos patrios, leyendas políticas y todo tipo de mensajes, o se la forró con cuero para protegerla, especialmente en las zonas donde era difícil conseguirla. Cuando el mate se convirtió en un objeto de lujo y entró a los salones, a mediados del siglo XVII, lentamente se le fueron

agregando aplicaciones de plata u oro recubriendo la calabaza hasta suplir la vasija vegetal con un mate totalmente de plata. A veces el mate fue tallado en madera de algarrobo o palo santo, fue hecho de coco, de asta o guampa, de marfil, de barro, de material plástico o de metal enlozado. A principio del siglo XX se fabrican mates de loza y porcelana en Alemania e Inglaterra. La Bombilla

La bombilla es el tubo hueco de caña o metal con un colador en uno de sus extremos y una boquilla chata en el otro que se usa para tomar el mate de calabaza. Antes de la llegada de los españoles, los indios tomaban el mate filtrando las hojas con los dientes. Los españoles, a quienes este sistema no les pareció demasiado elegante, empezaron a usar un apartador, (una cuchara chata de metal) para correr la yerba a un costado de la calabaza e impedir el paso de las hojas de yerba al tomar el mate. Este apartador se reformó hasta convertirse en lo que hoy llamamos bombilla. Gracias al talento de los plateros coloniales, las bombillas adoptaron formas diferentes.

La bombilla es compartida por todos los que forman la rueda del mate y fue precisamente esta costumbre que llamó la atención de los viajeros llegados a estas tierras. Esta bombilla moderna es desarmable para facilitar su limpieza. El curado del Mate

Antes de la primera cebada, la calabaza de la Lagenaria Vulgaris debe ser curada. Curada quiere decir limpiar y sacar los hollejos del interior de la calabaza hasta la boca con cebadura amarga usada, echar un chorro de agua caliente y dejarla durante un día. Desechar la cebadura y raspar el interior con el cabo de una cuchara para desprender el tejido blando. Repetir esta operación dos veces, hasta limpiarlo totalmente. Yerba Mate: una fuente de energía natural

La yerba posee una importante acción anti-fatigante y es un energizante natural, resultado de la concentración de bases xánticas. La yerba mate resulta muy útil en los tratamientos para adelgazar, ya que, por su composición química, corta el apetito; a lo que se debe sumar su acción laxante y también diurética.

También debemos destacar la acción tónico-estimulante general, a la que se suma su acción de activador del sistema nervioso central, en particular de la corteza cerebral; estimulando las funciones psíquicas, mejorando la atención y la asociación de ideas. It manages to get politics, economics and sport to go hand in hand in every conversation while it is present in a meeting. But, as if that were not enough, it also brings together people of all social classes. The history books state that this drink dates goes to the time of the Guarani Indians, who consumed the leaves of a shrub they called Caá. When the Spaniards arrived on the American continent, they began to drink it and called it ‘hierba del Paraguay’ or ‘yerba’. The old documents describe how those who drank this infusion, Spaniards and Indians, would sell their blankets or clothes to buy it when they had no means, and when they had no mate they would “become weak and say they can’t live without it. All of the Indians take it before daybreak and whenever they have it when they are working, even if they don’t eat, they sustain themselves just with the herb and revive their strength to continue working”. Mate became the main source of income for the Jesuits, who having obtained the permit to market the product in 1645 started to cultivate it in the late 17th Century in the

vicinity of the reservations. In the mid-18th Century mate started to become fashionable among all the social classes and, as they began to take mate at home, particularly in countries such as Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil and Uruguay, each family would have a cebadora, a mate server, and sometimes would have two, one for sweet and another for bitter. Production of the shrub became increasingly important over the years and the industry gathered great momentum, particularly in the 20th Century. In more recent times its production has grown and in 2005, for example, it reached 2,500 million kilos. Although consumed predominantly in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Chile and southern Brazil, it is also exported to countries of the Near East, and to a lesser extent to Europe, Asia and other American nations. Polo was and is no stranger to the mass trend of mate consumption. Moreover, despite its status as a ‘glamorous’ sport, it has a close bond with mate, which is identified more with the ‘popular’ classes. Hence the comment at the beginning of this report on its ‘special’ nature. Polo players and grooms leave aside their boss-employee relationship when there is a mate between them. As the people of South America would say in days of old, “mate makes everyone in the circle equal; it gives you the time to speak and the breathing space to listen”.

This is why it’s not uncommon, particularly in the morning or at sunset, to see players and grooms forming a big circle, a fire in the middle if it’s cold, sharing in the mate ritual. Adolfo Cambiaso, currently the best polo player in the world, is a big fan of mate. Indeed, he begins every day with the mate ritual, in the company of his grooms. He confirms this in every comment on his days at La Dolfina, his ranch located in Cañuelas, around 100 km from the city of Buenos Aires. “My routine begins at 8 am; I go and have mate with the grooms and organise my day. Then I hit some balls and spend entire days practicing with my La

But it’s not just La Dolfina’s number one who is a faithful friend of mate; the vast majority of polo players, particularly Argentineans, carry a Thermos flask under their arm and start the day with a ‘mateada’ among their grooms. Every countryside activity has close ties with mate and polo is no exception. Hence, in Palermo, the ‘cathedral’ of world polo, it is not uncommon to see spectators, players and grooms with a thermos flask in their

hands, as La Bocha European Polo has confirmed whenever it has visited the Argentine Open. Both for players and grooms, mate is a loyal friend in work and leisure, and the routine of preparing mate is repeated day after day and up to three times on the same day. Kilos of yerba, the thermos flask and the matera, the mate gourd, are as essential as the mallets, helmets and saddles on every long journey that the polo players go on around the world. Argentine, Uruguayan and Chilean polo players take it with them as an additional suitcase and these days they have no problem taking it on the plane. The mate gourd

The first mate gourd used was made from the fruit of a climbing plant, the Lagenaria Vulgaris. This fruit, known as the calabash, is dried, cut off at the neck, and hollowed out. To differentiate the calabash and make it more attractive, it was engraved or painted with monograms, crosses, fetishes, national coats of arms and symbols, political legends and all kinds of messages, or they were lined with leather to protect them, particularly in areas where they were difficult to find. When the gourd became a luxury object and entered the parlours, in the mid 17th Century, it received linings of silver or gold, covering the calabash until the plantderived vessel was replaced with gourds made entirely of silver. Sometimes the gourd was carved from carob wood or lignum vitae; it was made from coconut, horn, ivory, clay, plastic or glazed metal. In the early 20th Century the gourds were manufactured from china and porcelain in Germany and England. The Bombilla The bombilla is the hollow cane or metal tube with a strainer at one end and a flat mouthpiece at the other, used to drink the mate from the calabash. Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the Indians drank mate by filtering the leaves with their teeth. The Spaniards, who didn’t think this system was very elegant, started to use an apartador (a flat metal spoon) to

push the mate to one side of the calabash and keep the leaves in place while they drank. This apartador was adapted until it became what we now call the bombilla. Thanks to the talent of the colonial silversmiths, the bombillas came in various shapes. The bombilla is shared among all those who form a mate circle and it was precisely this custom which caught the attention of travellers arriving in these lands. The modern bombilla can be taken apart to make cleaning easier. The curing of the gourd

Before mate is prepared for the first time, the Lagenaria Vulgaris calabash must be ‘cured’. The curing, or curada, involves cleaning and removing the skin from the inside of the calabash, up to its rim, with used mate and a splash of hot water, left there for an entire day. The used mate is then discarded and the inside is scraped with the end of a spoon in order to remove the white tissue. This operation is repeated twice, until completely clean. a source of natural energy

The mate shrub has a significant antifatigue effect and is a natural energiser, a result of the concentration of xanthic bases. Mate is very useful in weight-loss treatments because, due to its chemical composition, it suppresses the appetite, as well as having a laxative and diuretic effect. It also has a general tonic-stimulant effect and activates the central nervous system, in particular the cerebral cortex, stimulating psychic functions and improving attentiveness and association of ideas. Mate’s components include chlorogenic acid, a substance which is also found in artichoke, known to have liver-protecting properties. It also contains substances known as flavonoids, which are responsible for antioxidant effects, important in ensuring and maintaining health because they fight the oxidant effect of the free radicals which, by attacking the body’s cells, cause causing illness and premature ageing. l

Inglaterra se llevó la primera etapa del World Women Polo Circuit (WWPC), que tuvo su presentación mundial en Punta del Este, Uruguay. La WWPC, el único circuito de polo femenino apoyado por la Federación Internacional de Polo y la Asociación Argentina de Polo, organizó su primer torneo en Punta del Este, uno de los balnearios más exclusivos de Sudamérica, del 8 al 12 de enero. El certamen, que se disputó en las canchas del complejo La Furuka, contó con la participación de seis selecciones que fueron agrupadas en dos zonas, jugando bajo el sistema todos contra todos. Inglaterra, que se adjudicó la zona B, había superado en las rondas clasificatorias a Francia por 4 a 2 y a Alemania por 3 a 2; en tanto que Estados Unidos, encuadrado en la zona A, se impuso a Argentina por 3 a 1 y a Brasil por idéntico

marcador. Las jugadoras rioplatenses se integraron con éxito en varias de las selecciones participantes e Inglaterra no fue la excepción. En el partido final se demostró la calidad de dichas polistas, siendo la mejor figura del campeón la argentina Lía Salvo. England won the first stage of the World Women Polo Circuit (WWPC), which made its debut at Punta del Este, Uruguay. The WWPC, the only women’s polo circuit backed by the Federation of International Polo and the Argentine Polo Association, organised its first tournament at Punta del Este, one of South America’s most exclusive resorts, from January 8 to 12. The competition, held on the fields of the La Furuka complex, involved six national sides grouped into two zones, playing under the all-againstall system. England, which won Zone B, overcame France by 4 goals to 2 and Germany by 3 goals to 2 in the qualifying rounds. In Zone A, the United States beat Argentina by 3 goals to 1 and Brazil by the same score. Players from the River Plate region incorporated themselves successfully into several of the participating national sides, and England was no exception. In the final match the quality of these players was demonstrated, with the best performance coming from the Argentine Lía Salvo. Also outstanding throughout the tournament in the winning quartet were the Uruguayan Ana Inés Cassinelli, the Argentine Verónica Posse and the solid English back, Stephanie Haverhats. Following the success of the first stage at Punta del Este, the World Women Polo Circuit (WWPC) will continue in July 2008 with Río de Janeiro, Brazil, as the venue. The last stage on the circuit has been earmarked for December, on the Jockey Club de San Isidro fields in Argentina, prior to this year’s Argentine Open Championships. l

Millenium La Varzea se llevó el primer trofeo de la temporada en Portugal al ganar la Copa de Bronce de la segunda edición del Open lusitano, que se jugó en las magníficas instalaciones de La Varzea Polo Club. El equipo integrado por Joao Rufino, Tiago y Diogo Gallego y el argentino Sebastián Merlos (9 goles de handicap) derrotó en la final a CFA (Miguel Freitas, Jorge Iturrioz, Esteban Iturrioz y Horacio Etcheverry) por un ajustado 7-6 y de esta manera se hizo acreedor al premio de 25 mil euros reservado para el ganador. Sebastián Merlos debutó con buen pie en Portugal, ya que es la primera vez que acude a jugar el Open de dicho país y fue una de las grandes figuras del encuentro decisivo. El tercer puesto del certamen correspondió a Santa Clara, que venció a The Famous Grouse por 6 a 4, al tiempo que la clasificación la completaron Lusitania y Quinta da Cegonhas, que ocuparon el quinto y sexto puestos, respectivamente. El torneo contó con la participación de seis equipos de 12 goles, la misma cantidad prevista para las copas de Plata y Oro. Además de Sebastián Merlos, que con 9 goles de handicap es considerado una de las grandes figuras del polo mundial, también estuvieron presentes en La Varzea Polo Club sus compatriotas Tomás Fernández Llorente (8 goles) y Sebastián y Alfredo Harriot, con 7 goles de handicap ambos. La gran demanda de caballos de polo en países como Inglaterra e Irlanda motivó a la organización Pony del Sol, que promociona y comercializa caballos de polo de Uruguay, a realizar una subasta en el Fifield Polo Club de Inglaterra. La subasta, la segunda que organiza Pony del Sol, cuyo director es el empresario y polista uruguayo Luciano Irazabal, se llevará a cabo el lunes 9 de junio en dicho club, ubicado en Oakley Green Road (Windsor, Berkshire), a corta distancia en coche desde Londres, inaugurado en septiembre de 2004 y que cuenta con cuatro canchas de polo. La primera edición del remate, realizado el año pasado, fue un éxito rotundo y se colocó el 90% de los ejemplares llevados a subasta. Pero los resultados también se vieron a posteriori, ya que los compradores manifestaron a los responsables de la organización su satisfacción por los ejemplares adquiridos. Uno de ellos, la yegua Fernanda, se adjudicó un premio como mejor ejemplar de un torneo

en Inglaterra. El buen éxito del primer remate, más la creciente demanda de caballos en el Reino Unido, donde el polo comienza a practicarse desde edad escolar, impulsó a Irazabal y sus colaboradores, Juan Miguel Godino y el RR.PP. Nick Williams, a llevar adelante la segunda edición en el Fifield Polo Club. Un total de 27 ejemplares de polo de primer nivel, especialmente traídos desde Uruguay en avión, se expondrán a la bajada de martillo el 9 de junio en Fifield. Sobre las expectativas de la subasta, su organizador y director de Pony del Sol, manifestó a La Bocha European Polo, que son “muy buenas debido a la calidad y variedad de niveles en los caballos. Ello permite llegar y contemplar las exigencias de los jugadores de polo tanto de bajo, mediano como alto handicap. Esperamos que la gente acompañe la subasta y por tal motivo decidimos hacerlo en Fifield Polo Club. que se encuentra muy cerca de Londres”, concluyó. l

The great demand for polo horses in countries such as England and Ireland led to the Pony del Sol organisation, which promotes and sells polo horses from Uruguay, to hold an auction at the Fifield Polo Club in England. The auction, the second to be organised by Pony del Sol, a firm managed by Uruguayan businessman and polo player Luciano Irazabal, will take place on June 9 at the aforementioned club, located on Oakley Green Road (Windsor, Berkshire), a short drive from London. The club was founded in September 2007 and has four polo fields. The first of these auctions, which took place last year, was a resounding success, with 90% of the horses up for sale finding new owners. But the results were also revealed with hindsight, with the buyers expressing their satisfaction to the organisers with the specimens acquired. One of them, the mare Fernanda, received a prize for best horse in a tournament in England. The success of the first auction, plus the growing demand for horses in the United Kingdom, where polo is starting to be played from school age, were all the encouragement that was needed by Irazabal and his co-workers Juan Miguel Godino and the PR Nick Williams, to go ahead with the second auction at Fifield Polo Club. A total of 27 polo horses of the highest standard, brought in especially from Uruguay by plane, will go under the hammer on June 9 at Fifield. The organiser and manager of Pony del Sol told La Bocha European Polo that the expectations for the auction are â&#x20AC;&#x153;very good due to the quality and variety of standards of the horses. This allows buyers to take into account the demands of low-, medium- and high-goal players alike. We want a lot of people to attend the auction, which is why we decided to put it on at Fifield Polo Club, which is very near Londonâ&#x20AC;?, he concluded. l
