My name is Hanora McCool. I am 61 years old and a mother of five children and six grandchildren aged from six to 21 years and with two more on the way. I have been a Foster Carer for 28 years and have fostered 194 children. I have been approved to care for three children from 0 to 11 years. It is the most rewarding job I have ever done, and even though it can be hard work and often challenging, I couldn’t imagine doing any other job. I have attended many training courses and have completed my Level 3 Diploma in Childcare. I have also received excellent support from my supervising social worker and my extended family. I would say that having a good support network is essential.

Work from home. Be a foster carer. • A network of fostering peers and professionals is always there to help and advise you. • Free training in fostering skills and higher related qualifications is ongoing. • You are paid a weekly financial allowance for the child(ren), plus a fee for yourself. • You need a spare room in your home, and parenting or childcare experience. The London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster City Council have agreed to offer a council tax grant as an incentive to those who become foster carers and who are living in one of the three boroughs. Foster carers play a vital role in our communities providing loving and supportive homes for our children and young people.

Activities for children and young people with disabilities There are lots of inclusive activities in this year’s guide and the activities on the following pages are specifically for children and young people with disabilities. Look out for the following symbol throughout Summer in the City: Suitable for someone with a disability Providers will strive to cater for your child’s needs. If your child has a disability, a learning difficulty, or additional needs, it is always a good idea to contact the provider in advance to make sure that they can meet your child’s needs effectively. You may wish to see if it is possible to arrange a pre-visit to the site of the activity. A small number of specialist projects require referrals from a social worker. Please contact the Children with Disabilities Team in your borough regarding this (contact details opposite). The cost may be able to be met through your social worker or via direct payments.

Hidden haven in Hanwell Brent Lodge Animal Centre, often called the Bunny Park, is tucked away in Brent River Park, Hanwell. Home to more than 40 species of animals, birds and insects, it is west London’s only official, free zoo. Have you been recently?

The animal centre has more creatures than ever, ranging from rare red crowned cranes and an amusing gaggle of meerkats to a colourful collection of chickens and a pair of roaming peacocks. You can also enjoy the tranquil butterfly house – watching them feed, fly freely and even land on you if you stand still long enough. The tropical rainforest walkthrough, meanwhile, brings you closer to the snakes, bearded dragons and poison dart frogs.

They are joined by sulcata tortoises and Pashto, the leopard gecko. The butterfly house and jungle walkthrough is open between 12noon- 4pm at weekends and in the school holidays. Entry to this is £2 per person and there is a park gift shop for visitors to buy small pocket-money toys and make donations to the animals’ upkeep and conservation in the park.

FIVE FURRY FRIENDS The mob of meerkats lives with a pair of porcupines in a specially-made enclosure that you can enter with a zookeeper. For £35 per person, or £60 for two, you can go behind the scenes and get up close to meet them in their own environment while the zookeeper gives you the lowdown on these friendly critters. You can even ‘adopt’ one – which you might find hard to resist after the playful gang get to know you.

WIN FREE TICKETS! CHELSEA v WEST HAM

HAMMER TIME

After England’s disappointing UEFA Euro 2016 campaign Tim Harrison looks forward to opening day of the Premier League and asks if Chelsea are ready to bounce back... Chelsea are set to kick off the 2016-17 season against West Ham at the Bridge on Saturday 13 August. It’s your chance to win free tickets and a home shirt (see our competition). But will the outgoing Italy manager and new Blues boss Antonio Conte have enough time to get to know his team?

A

new campaign, a new manager, a new start... and hopefully Chelsea will be able to put the chaos of the past season behind them. Antonio Conte is a different kettle of fish to either Jose Mourinho - now running rivals Manchester United - or Guus Hiddink, but his performance at the Euros, wringing every last ounce of effort out of an unfancied Italian team, augurs well. In a way, the pressure is off the Blues. After the footballing world was turned on its head last year, thanks to Leicester City’s incredible journey, Chelsea no longer take to the field to face West Ham on the opening weekend with anything other than medium expectations.

All eyes are on Manchester, where Mourinho and Pep Guardiola’s City will slug it out, while in the capital most pundits seem to think that Arsenal and Tottenham will pose London’s biggest challenge, with the Hammers as dark horses in their new stadium. Chelsea, meanwhile, are objects of curiosity, but little else. Out of all European competition, they have a good chance of quietly achieving domestic cup glory, with a vague hope of making it into the Europa places. All of which suits the new Italian gaffer, soon to celebrate his 47th birthday;

F O R T H E L AT E S T I N F O R M AT I O N A N D U P D AT E S , V I S I T:

a man focused on micromanaging everything he possibly can. Conte’s weakness is his lack of English football knowledge, which is why captain John Terry has been retained for a year, to advise on such questions as ‘Where exactly is Watford?’ JT’s role will evolve in this transitional season. Ultimately he dreams of taking on a coaching role at Stamford Bridge, but (as Ryan Giggs discovered at Old Trafford) that path is not a straight one. Meanwhile, Marseille striker Michy Batshuayi, the 22-yearold Belgian pin-up who scored in his country’s 4-0 demolition of Hungary during the Euros, is to be Conte’s first signing. Yet the thing that has Blues fans salivating isn’t that he netted with his first touch, or that he is costing Roman Abramovich £33million; it’s that he showed such instinctive promise alongside Eden Hazard. Conte prefers a playing style of three at the back - something Chelsea’s players (and fans) are just not used to. Expect tears and tantrums while the manager tinkers to see how it will work in practice.
