HAMK aims to be carbon neutral by 2030

12

The goal has been broken down into concrete changes that will affect the everyday lives of everyone at HAMK.

In spring 2020, Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) drafted a sustainable development programme. However, the principles of sustainability have been in operation since the beginning of HAMK, in 1995.

Sustainability studies will be included in all degrees regardless of field and there will also be training sessions offered to the staff.

The goals range from very large (carbon neutrality, eco-efficiency, wellbeing of the entire work community) to small and everyday ones (monitoring water consumption, abandoning disposable containers, favouring local production in restaurant services). In addition to ecological sustainability, attention will also be paid to social and cultural sustainability, such as reducing inequality. The UN Sustainable Development Goals are the basis on which measures are applied to education, research, and everyday activities on campuses.

An important step is in year 2030: by then, HAMK should be a carbon neutral, meaning that all emissions produced would also be compensated.

”The goal is demanding but necessary and in line with today’s general practices and procedures.

HAMK’s extensive teaching and research forests contribute to this goal,” says Tuomas Salonen, Director of Property Management.

HAMK currently has its own forests and right-touse forests totalling 3,400 hectares. Between 15,000 and 25,000 new trees are planted annually.

Success in international GreenMetric Rankings

Häme University of Applied Sciences ranked 17th among over one thousand participants, in the international GreenMetric World University rankings 2022, measuring the sustainability of higher education institutions’ operations and operational environment.

There were participants from all continents and the number of participants has increased annually. HAMK did the best of the three participating Finnish higher education institutions: The University of Eastern Finland ranks 39, and Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences ranks 506. In the lead were Wageningen University from the Netherlands, and University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University from Great Britain.

The comparison examined measures promoting sustainable development in education, research, water, waste, transportation, and settings and infrastructure.

HAMK improved its scores in the education category, such as organising sustainability-related events and organising a student unions. HAMK scored full marks in the water management category. The weakest area for HAMK – although it also scores 80% of the maximum – is energy use. Compared to many other higher education institutions, HAMK has a large number of campuses and therefore a lot of infrastructure to maintain. HAMK has been taking energy efficiency measures for a long time and this winter the aim is to achieve a 10% energy saving, including by reducing indoor temperatures.

The examination concerned the measures for 2021. The GreenMetric comparison has been organised since 2010, and it is based on the UI GreenMetric University Rankings Network led by the University of Indonesia.
