Heat pumps – the mention of the term may send some into a spin, while others may be filled with encouragement, keen to embrace this low-carbon heating solution. Yet more simply remain unsure what to think, uncertain about the requirements of the technology, its cost, the additional training required and levels of consumer demand.

Meanwhile, the government continues to alter its policy in this area. Recently, it eased rules on the requirement on insulation as part of a new Heat Pump installation under the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. A move designed to make installations more affordable for homeowners. Then it proposed a delay in the implementation of the Clean Heat Market Mechanism, a scheme designed to speed up the adoption of Heat Pumps. (You can read more on page 12)

It has, however, already announced that fossil fuel boilers will be phased out in 2035. Those hoping hydrogen for heating may be the answer will have to wait until 2026, when the government plans to make a decision on this option. However, a recent National Audit Office (NAO) report ‘Decarbonising Home Heating’ noted that ongoing uncertainty around using hydrogen for home heating could slow progress in decarbonising domestic heating. The NAO report highlights that many stakeholders and industry organisations would like this date brought forward to remove uncertainty.

The NAO report also indicated that the government is 'yet to determine' how heating will be decarbonised in the homes that may not be included in the planned 2035 fossil fuel boiler phase out. An announcement in September 2023 indicated that around 20% of homes would fall into this category.

However, the overall direction of travel remains. Driven by the need to decarbonise, the country is gradually moving away from fossil fuel heating and towards low carbon alternatives. Alongside Heat Networks, Heat Pumps continue to emerge as a technology to replace gas boilers. However, a range of other solutions also exist, including, amongst others, alternative fuels.

But while further certainty is sought by many – and just to throw a further cat among the pigeons – it should also be remembered that there will be a General Election within the next 12 months, along with a possible change of administration, and amendments to policy direction.

NEWLOYALTY SCHEME LAUNCHED BYVIESSMANN

Viessmann Climate Solutions has launched a new VIPartner loyalty scheme which offers a host of rewards to qualifying heat pump installers.

VIPartner is an elevated offering that builds on the company’s VPlus incentive programme, which offers installers points on purchases from all of its products when they are registered through its portal.

VIPartner offers Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS)-registered installers fitting a minimum of five Viessmann heat pumps each year a range of additional perks. These include extra VPlus points for every registered heat pump installation, qualified heat pump sales leads in their area, seven-year heat pump warranties as standard and promotion on Viessmann’s website as a VIPartner.

“VIPartners has been developed for established and experienced UK heat pump specialists who are looking to partner with a heating systems manufacturer that will recognise their expertise and the quality of their installations,” said Darren McMahon, Marketing Director at Viessmann Climate Solutions UK.

NEWPRODUCTCOURSES FROMGRANT UK

Grant UK’s Training Academy has added two new face-to-face courses to its offering with the addition of a Hybrid Solutions course and a course dedicated to the new Aerona Smart Controller and EvoLink Hybrid System Hub, both of which are aimed at heat pump installers.

The Hybrid Solutions Course is one day in duration and is intended for domestic heating and renewables installers who have previously completed one of the company’s Aerona³ air source heat pump courses, either in-person or online. The course provides a combination of hands-on, practical training with theory learning and covers the Grant VortexAir Hybrid, the new EvoLink Hybrid System Hub as well as Grant’s low loss header systems. The second course is the one-day Smart Controller and EvoLink product training course. The course is split into two, with the first half dealing with theory and hands-on training on the Aerona Smart Controller and the other half covering the EvoLink Hybrid System Hub.

“We are pleased to add these new face-to-face courses to the suite of product training courses that we deliver in Swindon, Hawes, Livingston and Norfolk,” commented Phil Stanley, Training Manager at Grant UK.

APPRENTICESAWARDED WITHEQUIPMEN TBURSARIES

The Worshipful Company of Plumbers (WCoP) has announced six recipients of its bursary, designed to help kick-start their careers in the plumbing industry.

The winners are from colleges across the country, including Dundee and Angus Kingsway College, Borders College, St Helens Green Energy Centre, Windsor Forest - Langley Campus, South Lanarkshire College, and Kendal College. Each winner will receive £1,000 in vouchers for tools and equipment from Monument Tools.

The tools and equipment Bursary scheme, which is sponsored by Monument Tools and City & Guilds, has been running for over 20 years. It is designed to help plumbing students that would benefit from financial assistance to support those who are working towards a recognised plumbing qualification across the UK.

David Adams, Master of the WCoP, said: “While the heating and plumbing industry is an excellent choice of career, we know that it requires upfront investment in terms of equipment and tools. Through our bursary scheme, we support those first few but crucial steps in their journey to becoming a qualified plumber or heating engineer. Ideal Heating is opening a low carbon training hub in the South of England. The Training and Technology Centre will be used by the company’s Expert Academy to equip installers with the skills to fit, maintain and service domestic and commercial heat pumps.

The winner of Wirquin’s ‘Win a year’s worth of free fuel’ promotion has been named.

It will also deliver product training for Ideal Heating’s range of domestic and commercial boilers. The 16,000 sq ft centre, located at Insignia Park in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, close to the M1 motorway, represents an investment of £1m by the company and is due to open in April. Ideal Heating says it will have four spacious training areas featuring the latest equipment and technology, a large conference facility and comfortable café area. The new hub follows the opening in January 2023 of the Expert Academy’s National Training and Technology Centre in Hessle, East Yorkshire.

NIBE ASHP IN NEW ENERGY REVOLUTION GALLERY

The Science Museum in London has opened its doors to the new Energy Revolution: The Adani Green Energy Gallery, which includes low carbon solutions and their role in our journey to a sustainable future.

NIBE’s S2125 Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP), a high temperature, energy saving model, which uses natural refrigerants, has been chosen by the museum to showcase ASHPs.

It is featured as part of the ‘Future Power’ section, sitting alongside nuclear fusion experiments, tidal turbine blades and other contemporary technologies. Olivia Powell-Maycock, Head of Marketing at NIBE, said: “We are delighted that NIBE’s S2125 has been chosen for this important gallery. It’s exciting to see our heat pump sitting alongside innovative examples from the past, present and future.

“The Science Museum is such an iconic part of London’s attractions, entertaining and educating in equal measures – the ideal platform to get the climate change message across, while demonstrating the inspiring technological developments that will hopefully lead to more positive outcomes for the environment.”

Steven Woodward of Steve Mechanical Ltd, was the lucky winner, drawn at random after entries had been validated. Steve said: “I first saw Wirquin at Installer show a few years ago, and after speaking with one of your sales reps, tried out the Nano. Since then, we have purchased over 100 and always use them.”

The competition, which ran in 2023 and was promoted via adverts, displays in stores, and social media posts, gave the company’s customers the opportunity to win a years’ worth of free fuel along with £150 of Wirquin products.

PLUMBING AND HEATING SKILLS PARTNERSHIP UNVEILS MAJOR EXPANSION

The Plumbing & Heating Skills Partnership (PHSP) is set to significantly expand and strengthen its membership following a strategic Skills Summit.

This expansion includes widening the PHSP UK Strategic Group membership to include the Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering (CIPHE), the Plumbing, Heating and Mechanical Engineering Joint Industry Boards (JIB-PMES & SNIJIB) and Unite the Union.

“Our Partnership is dedicated to developing and extending education and training, fostering a commitment to professionalism and competency at every level within our industry. It’s centred around facilitating dialogue and collaboration across the profession alongside taking practical action,” said Duncan Wilson, PHSP Chairman. “With a membership that is both diverse and representative we can achieve greater outcomes; unity not only makes us stronger but also more effective.”

Established in April 2017 as a not-for-profit skills partnership, the PHSP was founded by the Association of Plumbing and Heating Contractors (APHC), the Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation (SNIPEF), and the British Plumbing Employers Council (Training) Limited (The BPEC Charity). Its mission is to lead and support the development of standards, qualifications, and apprenticeships for the plumbing and domestic heating industry.

NICEICURGES PLUMBERS TO UPSKILL TO RENEWABLES

NICEIC is urging plumbers and heating engineers to start upskilling in preparation for growing demand for low-carbon energy solutions.

NICEIC Technical Director Paul Collins commented: “With a variety of heating incentives and grants available, it is likely that plumbing and heating engineers will see an increase in demand for low-carbon, energy efficient and renewable technologies. This means that installers need to be fully clued up on the latest and most advanced solutions so that they can not only advise their customers, but also be skilled on the installation of these new technologies.

“With this, it is now more crucial than ever that they invest in upskilling and they can do this by undertaking training and increasing their knowledge –especially when it comes to electrical installations. From solar thermal through to heat pumps, the range of low carbon technologies available now is vast. Those installers who do invest in good training and have a solid understanding of electrical requirements, will be better placed to unlock the opportunity.”

NICEIC has developed a new range of qualifications for heating and plumbing engineers seeking to upskill their knowledge and competence in key emerging low carbon categories. NICEIC Head of Business Development & Strategic Partnerships, Neil Vincent commented: "As crucial contributors to achieving net-zero, plumbing and heating engineers play a vital role in the nation's transition to not only heat pumps but other low carbon technologies. WILO APPOINTS NEW SALES DIRECTOR

Wilo UK has announced Jason Cox as its new Sales Director. With three years’ experience at the company, and over 20 years across the building, heating and renewable energy industries, the appointment has seen Jason transition from his role as Service Director. Jason said: “It’s a real honour to be named as the new Building Services Sales Director of Wilo UK. Having entered the industry as an apprentice heating engineer, the experience I have gained throughout the last two decades has been invaluable and I plan to use it to full effect in my new role.

SELECTCALLS FOR MINIMUM STANDARDS OF COMPETENCE

Scottish construction trade body, SELECT, says the Scottish Government needs to set minimum standards of competence for installers as well as installations as it seeks to implement new domestic heating standards.

SELECT’s warnings came as it responded to a recent Scottish Government consultation into proposals for a Heat in Buildings Bill, which plans to introduce a law requiring homeowners to ensure their homes meet minimum energy efficiency standards by 2033.

The body said that while it agrees in general with the proposal to prohibit the use of polluting heating systems in all buildings by 2045, care was needed that advantage was not taken of vulnerable people and that the increased cost of energy was taken into consideration.

In its response, SELECT said: “We have seen several government projects run into problems as they often leave the door open for unscrupulous traders who take advantage of the government's own messaging as a way of convincing people that work is required when often it is not.

“Any demands for work needs to be set in the context of availability of energy supply, material supply and labour. Added to that is the increased cost of energy – the differential between gas and electric costs.”

The association added: “It is also vital that the Scottish Government legislates to ensure installations are only undertaken by properly qualified, trained and competent persons. This is as important as any other measure.”

OVER 4,000 HEAT PUMP INSTALLATIONS IN FEB

MCS, a certification scheme for low carbon energy products, has released its latest data, relating to February 2024. It indicates there were 17,224 installations during the month, taking the yearly total to 33,482. Solutions installed include Heat Pumps, Solar PV and Battery Storage.

There were 4,280 Heat Pumps installations in February, around 25% of all installations covered by the scheme. MCS commented that this was the third best month ever for the technology. MCS reports that the average monthly heat pump installations for 2024 is over 4,000 (4,110), a 26% increase on the 2023 average.

Solar PV constituted the largest proportion of installations during February 2024, just under 75% of the total. There are around 4,640 installers registered with the scheme, with an additional 119 contractors joining in February 2024.

DAIKIN UK OPENS FOUR NEW SUSTAINABLEHOME CENTRES

Air-source heat pump manufacturer, Daikin UK has opened the doors of four new Sustainable Home Centres.

In 2023, Daikin UK expanded its Sustainable Home Network by opening nine centres growing its network by almost 40% year-on-year. In 2024 it has already added four further centres and, it says, there are plans to open more later this year.

Iain Bevan, Commercial Manager – Heating & Renewables at Daikin UK, commented: “Our new openings mark the start of another busy year of launches across our network. Sustainable Home Centres are among the top tiers of Daikin Sustainable Home Network membership – creating an opportunity for specialist renewable heating businesses to step up and lead the country towards a low carbon future.

“Being able to discuss heat pump technology and its significant cost saving benefits in person is vital, as is knowing that it will be installed by a highly trained professional – which is exactly what our Sustainable Home Network is all about.”

tepeo, a leader in heat batteries, has opened an additional manufacturing facility, allowing the company to expand its operations. Lord Callanan, Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, officially presided over the opening.

The company’s Zero Emission Boiler (ZEB®) has been designed to support the UK’s Net Zero ambition. The ZEB uses electricity to supply heating, charging up andstoring most of the heat a home requires at off-peak times. The company says this makes it a more cost-effective and cleaner option compared to existing boilers.

Tepeo says that the successful expansion with its new facility will not only increase the number of ZEB®’s produced but also provide a new home for some of tepeo's growing team.

RENEWABLE-READY BOILERS NEEDED FOR OFF-GRID NEW-BUILDS

Liquid Gas UK has called on the Government to allow renewable-ready boilers to be installed in rural new-build homes that are not connected to the mains gas grid.

Responding the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) Future Homes and Buildings Standards consultation, Liquid Gas UK emphasised the need for a mixed technology approach to decarbonising rural, off-grid housing stock and recommended Government should focus on setting parameters for achieving Net Zero targets, rather than prescribing specific solutions.

Advocating for a mixed technology approach, the trade body has called for renewable liquid gases such as bioLPG and rDME to be used in rural, off-grid home heating.

George Webb, CEO of Liquid Gas UK commented: “Domestic heating accounts for around 14% of the UK’s emissions, so decarbonising the way we all heat our homes will play a significant role in the UK meeting its Net Zero targets.”

HEAT PUMP ADOPTION

Changes have been announced to two government initiatives to speed up the take up of Heat Pumps. An alteration to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) means that homeowners will no longer have to install cavity wall or loft insulation to use the scheme – a move designed to make adopting a Heat Pump more accessible to homeowners.

However, the government has also announced a proposal to delay the implementation of its Clean Heat Market Mechanism (CHMM). The CHMM is designed to encourage boiler manufacturers to move across to Heat Pumps more rapidly.

Speaking on the amendment to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, Energy Security Secretary, Claire Coutinho, said: “We’ve already supported families by making our Boiler Upgrade Scheme one of the most generous in Europe and now we’re making heat pumps even cheaper and easier to

install. This is all part of our wider plan to ensure we cut our emissions and make homes more energy efficient without burdening families with high costs.”

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) offers grants of £7,500 off the cost of a heat pump installation. Originally set at £5,000 the scheme was bolstered by an additional £2,500 in Autumn 2023.

Reacting to the news Madeleine Gabriel, Director of Sustainable Future at innovation charity Nesta, said: “Heat pumps are the most efficient low carbon source of heating for people’s homes and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is helping keep installation costs down for households.

“The strength of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme is that it is a straightforward offer with relatively few restrictions on eligibility. The Government’s announcement today removes further barriers to uptake meaning that even more homes will be eligible to use the grant to install a heat pump.”

Ian Rippin, CEO of MCS, commented: “Following today’s announcement from Claire Coutinho, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, we broadly welcome the announced changes to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in particular answering our calls to allow more consumers to take advantage of a broader choice of low carbon heating.

“Changes to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme that mean homeowners will no longer need to install cavity wall or loft insulation to access the grant are certainly a positive development, opening up this crucial incentive to a wider potential audience.”

Clean Heat Market Mechanism

The change to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme coincided with a proposal from the government to delay the implementation of its Clean Heat Market Mechanism (CHMM) by a year to April 2025. The mechanism is designed to encourage faster adoption of Heat Pumps by requiring boiler manufacturers to also provide Heat Pumps. Companies that miss their Heat Pump targets face a financial penalty.

In announcing the proposal the government said that prior to the introduction of the CHMM scheme it wanted to give the sector additional time to allow for preparations to be made within their businesses, and for more consumers to take up heat pumps. Some in the industry have called the CHMM a ‘boiler tax’ likely to push up the cost of gas boilers.

Mike Foster CEO of the trade body Energy and Utilities Alliance (EUA) said: “We welcome the delay in the introduction of the boiler tax, as confirmed today by the government. It ends weeks of speculation in the media. However, this decision is clearly political, not about heating policy. The government have set a trap for a future administration, which according to the polls is likely to be Labour, knowing the boiler tax from 2025 is likely to be around £200.”

Report reveals hurdles to wider heat pump roll-out

The National Audit Office (NAO) has reported that uptake of Heat Pumps remains lower than expected and that expected reductions in costs have not yet been seen.

In a recent report on the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero’s (DESNZ) plans to decarbonise home heating the NAO revealed the government: “does not have an overarching long-term consumer engagement plan for decarbonising home heating.” It also said that both installation costs and running costs of Heat Pumps are not falling in the way that was anticipated.

Reacting to the report George Webb, CEO of Liquid Gas UK said: “It is unsurprising that heat pump installations continue to fall behind the government’s ambitions and to hear that consumer confidence remains low. Despite grants available through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, consumers off the gas grid can face costs of over £20,000 to prepare their home for a heat pump and have one installed – our own polling found that 42.1% of off gas grid consumers believe that a heat pump is completely unaffordable for their household.”

Traditionally, brazing was the main method for joining pipe. However, over time practices evolve and new trends have emerged. Legislation drives forward many of the changes that take place within our business including good working practices and health and safety initiatives.

Over the past decade we have seen something of a transformation within our industry and there are four main factors responsible for this. The first of these is Health & Safety regulations, which are essential to ensure the safety and compliance of installations. Within these directives is an onus on installers to stay updated on relevant legislation and codes governing pipe jointing practices. Health and Safety protocols have had a major impact on brazing practices, particularly when it comes to on-site working within confined spaces such as lofts or under floors. Increasingly, new build developers, for example, are moving away from brazing.

Sustainability

The second of these major influences is that of manufacturer instructions – these play a crucial role in guiding installers on the correct installation techniques and materials for pipe jointing. By following these guidelines, the reliability and longevity of the joints is ensured, whilst minimising the risk of leaks or failures.

Third, is the drive for sustainability and the need to reduce embodied carbon within building developments as well as –wherever possible – utilising products that can be recycled.

The development of sustainable supply chain management plays an important part in this and, involves using suppliers who undertake eco-friendly practices.

There is now a fourth factor: clients consider the usage and application of a product and the impact certain materials have on the environment. Safeguarding the planet is important to them and, wherever possible, use materials that are fully recyclable. Jointing methods such as press fitting and compression help minimise waste and energy consumption, thereby contributing to sustainability ambitions.

BRAZING

Many traditionally trained engineers continue to favour brazing, which is second nature to them. Joining pipes by melting a filler metal such as brass or copper achieves strong, permanent connection, and is ideally suited to industrial piping and HVAC installations. Brazing is resistant

to vibration and performs well in high-pressure and high temperature applications. As mentioned earlier, drawbacks to this process include the need for a ‘hot-works’ permit and a firewatch following the work being undertaken.

COMPRESSION

Compression fittings are a mechanical joint providing strength, grip and effortless engagement without the need for additional sealant. Conex Bänninger launched its designed rib-nut, which is tightened by a compression spanner, in the 1950s. WELDING

Welding is perhaps something of a dying ‘art’. This technique requires specialised training and equipment and preparation of the joints is vital.

SOLDERING

Utilising a filler metal with a lower melting point than welding, soldering is most commonly used in residential plumbing applications. It provides good sealing properties in low-pressure applications.

Each jointing solution has its own benefits/advantages and which solution an installer chooses depends on their skill level, competency and comfortability as well as legislation. Therefore, there really isn’t a ‘one-size’ fits all option.

Charlie Brain, Senior Consultant and Authorising Engineer (Water) at the Water Hygiene Centre provides an update on Scald Risk, looking at the issues around thermostatic mixing valves and thermostatic mixing taps.

One of the risks associated with water safety that requires attention is the risk of scalding. The HSE Information Sheet HSIS6, states:

“If hot water used for showering or bathing is above 44°C there is increased risk of serious injury or fatality” and that a “risk assessment of the premises should be carried out to identify what controls are necessary and how the systems will be managed and maintained.”

Where vulnerable people are exposed, or where there is potential for whole-body immersion, engineering controls should be provided to ensure that water hotter than 44°C is not discharged from those outlets. Such engineering controls can include thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs).

What is a TMV?

A TMV mixes hot and cold water to deliver water at a pre-set, safe temperature to reduce the risk of scalding.

Depending on your source, versions of TMVs have been used on domestic water systems for over 100 years, but keeping to the current century to avoid debate, guidance on the correct use of TMVs can be found in HSE’s ACoP L8 back in 2000.

An example piece of such guidance was to ensure that the TMV should be sited as close to the outlet as possible (<2 metres), thus minimising the length of blended water that could give favourable conditions for bacteria to thrive, such as Legionella.

● Less familiarity – if installed in non-healthcare settings for users not used to operating them domestically;

● They typically are greater in size, so will require more space to install;

● Potential to be damaged or altered as the TMT is accessible;

● Access to room where TMT/outlet is installed is required, TMV’s can be cited in accessible service ducts like hotels.

The decision to opt for a traditional remote TMV or a modern TMT will typically come down to weighing up the balance of risk and cost. Both options can be certified to Type 3, thus ensuring the same level of scald protection.

TMTs offer a lower inherent risk of bacterial growth, but at a greater cost. This is why TMTs are usually found in healthcare buildings where user susceptibility requires increased protection against bacteria and infection. Ease of maintenance is also a serious consideration, as remote-style TMVs can become difficult to access and/or isolate if isolation valves are missing or ceased.

If scald risk is considered low and blended water is desired, a manual mixer (TMV 1) type tap could be recommended, where scald risk is deemed significant, the decision of TMV versus TMT needs to be informed by considering the range of factors –Risk, Cost and Difficulty.

Chirag Panchal from CP Utility Solutions installed a new Grundfos UPS3 Variable Speed Pump, after using the Grundfos Go App to determine the correct replacement pump.

Although central heating pumps are a core component of heating systems, like any component, over time, they may fail, or simply not be sufficient to get enough heat around a house. This was the situation found by Chirag Panchal from CP Utility Solutions on a recent job, documented in a new video now available on the PHPI YouTube Channel.

In the video Chirag explains how the existing fixed speed pump was running weak, a problem he noticed when power flushing the system at a customer’s house. In the video he demonstrates how he used the Grundfos Go App to identify the correct replacement pump.

Chriag says: “Now with the number of pumps out there that Grundfos offer, it can be a little bit daunting to select the right one, especially now that they're modulating. You want to get the one which is going to be the correct replacement for it. Easiest way to do it Grundfos have got their own app, the Grundfos Go app. Literally a few clicks, take a picture of the pump, and it will bring up the correct replacement for it to make sure that you've got the right pump for the right size of the system as well.”

In the video Chirag also explains some of the reasons installers may want to consider swapping out fixed pumps for variable speed pumps.

“At the moment, a lot of modular systems are becoming pressurised systems or sealed systems. Now a fixed-speed pump, as the name suggests, is just running at one speed all the time. By changing to a variable speed pump this becomes a lot more energy efficient because what it does

As with a radiator based set up, zoning an UFH system is extremely beneficial as it means that different areas/rooms of a home can be controlled independently. Each zone can be set for different time and temperatures to best suit the end users room use and comfort levels. The HCC100 is a benefit to this as it has the capacity to control up to eight zone thermostats. It has the capability of connecting to eight wireless thermostats, six wired thermostats or a combination of both. This gives installers a wide range of options when planning to install a UFH system.

QHow do installers advise a customer to run an UFH system? What are some simple tips for end-users to ensure their UFH is running efficiently?

An important tip would be to ensure that each zone thermostat is set for individual time and temperature settings. It is pointless having a number of zones and then have them all set for the same on/off periods and temperatures. Don't heat a room you aren't using.

Having your UFH system checked periodically is also beneficial. An installer can connect to a Honeywell Home HCC100 using the Resideo Pro app and can then check to see how the system has been running. They can also perform a number of diagnostic checks to ensure all moving parts are working and the system is as effective as it can be.

H ow to make it as a HEAT PUMP INSTALLER

Paul Spence, Technical Manager for heatly, gives his top tips for heat pump installation success.

With the Heat Pump Association recently reporting that there’s been a 166% increase in the number of heat pump installers, it stands to reason that many PHPI readers have made the move. As we all know, heat pumps are a different beast to gas boilers, and to make it in this marketplace there’s a few essentials that will help you ensure your installs are efficient and effective.

Encourage a fabric first approach

Despite recent changes to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme which mean in the future recipients no longer have to install cavity wall insulation (if possible), I would strongly recommend you encourage your customers to do as much to improve the energy efficiency of their property before the heat pump is installed.

The savings of an investment in insulation and draught proofing will soon outweigh the initial outlay. Using a 4-bed, 200m2 house as an example, the heatly app demonstrated that the addition of basic loft and floor insulation reduced heat loss by 45%, saving £1,000 a year in fuel costs.

A well-insulated home can also benefit from a smaller heat pump and may be less likely to require pipe and radiator upgrades, saving on the initial installation costs.

Beware of promised home improvements

If energy efficiency upgrade works are promised but not completed by the homeowner, then be aware of how that can affect your heat loss calculations. I would suggest delaying your assessment until works are complete if you can.

There are two potential negative outcomes here, which could lead to headaches in the future:

You base your calculations on what the homeowner says they’re going to do.

The proposed works aren’t completed, the heat pump is under-specified and the customer is cold and dissatisfied.

You base your calculations on the house as it stands. The homeowner completes significant energy efficiency improvements, the heat pump you’ve installed is then potentially oversized, the result of which is the minimum output exceeding demand much earlier in the shoulder months, compromising its usable life. Oversized heat pumps can also increase running costs for customers due to increased cycling rates, which also leads to reduced heat output.

Make sure the controls are set correctly

It’s really important that once installed, the heat pump is set-up correctly. Common problems include the stated flow temperature not being achieved via the controller settings. Weather compensation controls are often incorrectly adjusted; if a house is too cold, for example, this could mean the upper curve parameters need to be increased by a couple of degrees at your design outdoor temperature – this will make the radiators warmer.

Crucially, make sure the end user doesn’t fiddle with the set-up. If there is a problem, they should come back to you.

Explain how to use a heat pump properly

Apart from not adjusting the controls, customers need to understand the best way to run a heat pump: not switching them on and off, keeping the temperature consistent and allowing the house to heat evenly – radiators should all be open to ensure this can happen. It can be tempting to turn off a radiator in one room, but this can cause the adjacent room to lose heat faster and not achieve temperature targets.

Use the right tools and support System design is the most important part of a heat pump installers role and should not be underestimated. When sizing radiators, I recommend a 45/40 flow and return – by using a lower flow and return than the heat pump could generate I’m building in a degree of scope and increasing the potential efficiency. In most instances, the flow temperature can be increased if required, but if designed to the max, this control is removed. Be aware that increased flow temperature may reduce the overall kW output available.

If in doubt, refer back to the manufacturers – they want their products to work so it’s in their interest to help you. For Underfloor Heating (UFH), for example, I send the house plans to the UFH

manufacturers’ in-house design service, stating that my max flow temp is 45°, not their preferred 55°. I always get that in writing – it is essential.

I also stipulate not to design in 200 or 150mm pipe centres, small load requirements may necessitate 150-200mm centres but generally the closer the loop centres, the lower the flow temperature could be, leading to greater efficiency. The floor surface and floor structure play a significant part in UFH design.

Robert ‘Pointy’ Clarke shares his insights on his preferred choice of Talon clips for making installations speedy, safe and looking good.

Robert Clarke, aka ‘pointy_plumber’ on Instagram, runs PPH Services in Birmingham and has been in the plumbing business for over a decade. He knows a lot about pipe clips and he was good enough to share his thoughts and advice on a variety of different clips and accessories. Back in the mid 1980s, Talon started manufacturing the ‘Talon Hinged Clip’. 30 years on, it remains one of the company’s best-selling clips. These are the clips Pointy uses most often. The clips offer a 360° fixing for all pipes including PEX, Copper, MDPE and PVC pipework for increased security, are manufactured using polypropylene and all sizes can be connected together.

“The clips I most commonly use are the Hinged Clips in black and white, sometimes yellow for gas obviously. When selecting the clips, I always try and think what the best aesthetic will be based on colour or style,” explained Pointy.

They're also great for holding pipe centres straight through holes when used on a flat surface,” Pointy continued.

They are available in black, white, grey, chrome and even gold effect for a vintage look but also have an Identification Range to clearly indicate a pipe's contents: yellow for gas, red for hot water and blue for cold water. Sometimes installers will lift floorboards or open cupboards and be faced with a maze of pipework. But instead of having to trace each one back to the source, installing Identification Clips makes it straightforward for anyone working on the pipework to identify which pipes are carrying what around a house.

“I love the Hinged Clips for linking together in doubles which allows me to use the Talon trunking to protect people from hot surfaces. I also know that when spaced correctly they're incredibly robust and hold the pipe securely, especially when marking out or soldering pipework – they have just enough grab before clipping them down.”

Navigating tight spaces while installing pipe clips can be a complicated feat: it is awkward, there is limited space and its tricky getting into the right place. Here, the EZ Joist Clip has been designed to be a

It makes installing a long-distance length so much quicker because you can ping a single line from start point to finish point and draw your clips in before having to fit the pipe,” Pointy explained.

Even gaps

Reducers work with Hinged Clips to allow a smaller pipe to be installed within a larger clip. The Link Spacer fits between two Hinged Clips to set them a standard distance apart. This allows for an even gap between clips when fitting pipe lagging, adds uniformity to pipework and looks good.

“I did a system change where the boiler was in the loft several meters away from the old airing cupboard and used Talon’s Link Spacers to mass produce the clipping distances which made installation a lot more straightforward.”

Pointy also uses the standard Universal Spacer which fits to the base of all Talon Hinged Clips, MDPE clips and Snap-in Open Clips, adding 13mm clearance from the fixing surface.

Q Heating engineers and plumbers are working with liquids every day – how does your collection system help with daily tasks?

DERBLAUE® can be used for both collecting and pumping liquids, in a simple, efficient and clean way, for almost any application. The collection tub can be folded so small that it even fits in a trouser pocket. When unfolded, it has a capacity of 10 litres. The powerful pumping system can pump liquids out of the tub at a rate of 10 l/min and has a suction depth of 5mm. Q Do installers need to carry the tub to a drain to dispose of the liquid?

No. There is the DERBLAUE® pumping system. The pump can be placed into a specially designed lug in the tub, and the 3m hose can then be routed to a drain and fastened via a mounting clip, so that there is no need to hold anything (some plumbers even replace/prolong the hose themselves up to 30m).

The pump has a flow rate of 10 litres per minute at 0,5 bar, so that you can easily pump from a cellar to the ground floor. The pump can be operated either with a power supply unit or a splash-proof rechargeable

The advantage of the pumping system is firstly the major time saving, as this way every valve only needs to be opened once and the complete liquid can be drained in one go directly to the final destination, so during this time plumbers and heating engineers have their hands free and can already start with other work in the meantime. Secondly the pumping system allows such a controlled draining that the risk of damages to carpets or floors are close to zero.

QPlumbers and heating engineers often find themselves in tight and awkward spaces, how does the system help reach spaces that are hard to access?

That's exactly what makes DERBLAUE® so special. All products are so flexible that a 5mm gap is enough to fit the products in the smallest spaces. Integrated bending metal elements underneath the sealing lip of the collection tub (and also in other products) can be bent into any shape and thus perfectly adapted to any surface.

As every application situation can be different this allows maximum flexibility to adapt the products to each individual situation, exactly how the situation requires. The sealing lip therefore also adapts perfectly to uneven surfaces, so that water running down the pipe is

directed nicely into the tub.

Q How do you attach accessories, such as the slide and splash guards?

The slide has two strong neodymium magnets and can therefore be attached to all metal surfaces on its own as a splash guard or to conduct liquids into the tub, however it also can be combined with other products with these magnets. This is because not only the tub, but also the splash guard and the slide have built-in bending metal elements so that the slide and tub or slide and splash guard can be seamlessly connected to each other via the magnets and liquids can be drained away in a controlled manner. This way the surrounding area is protected as much as possible from splashes which leads to happy customers and happy plumbers and heating engineers.

Durabilty means sustainability. The longer our clothes last, the less impact they have.

IN NUMBERS SAFETY

There may be a tendency to dismiss electrical safety as the remit of the electrician but the reality is that many plumbing and heating installers, and in particular gas engineers, can come into contact with electricity whilst carrying out seemingly innocuous tasks. Sadly, in the figures released by the Health & Safety Executive in late 2022, injury and deaths caused by electricity are still being reported and so it will always be important to carry out simple electrical safety checks.

Taking into account the danger posed by electricity, the Gas Safe Register’s Technical Bulletin 118 addressed test procedures to keep service engineers safe from electrical hazards. This was issued on the 30th of January 2018. On the 1st of February 2023, a new version of the bulletin TB118a was issued which superseded the previous version.

Technical Bulletin 118a provides information and guidance which relates to

safe-to-touch and safe isolation procedures on single-phase supplies when carrying out gas work. This will be followed by a version covering loop impedance and multi-phase supplies at a later date. The technical bulletin should be read in conjunction with all other relevant safety guidance such as HSE Guidance Note GS38 (Electrical test equipment for use on low voltage electrical systems, fourth edition).

With the changes to the Gas Safe Register’s Technical Bulletin in mind, Martindale Electric has developed a range of electrical test and lock off kits especially for gas engineers.

Lock off

As a solution for locking off, the Martindale LOKKITGAS1 enables gas service engineers to securely lock off circuits before carrying out work on appliances connected to the mains power supply. Locking off the supply is an essential step

in safe isolation procedures as required by the Electricity at Work Regulations and Gas Safe Register Technical Bulletin TB118a. The kit includes both miniature MCB locks and the LOKFS1 universal fused spur locking off device which provides a simple solution for safely isolating fixed wired appliances including cookers, boilers, hand dryers and water heaters. It is not safe to assume a circuit or those adjacent to it are dead just because the isolation device appears to be in the off position.

The kit includes all the essential test tools for gas safety engineers to achieve compliance to safe isolation procedures as required by the Electricity at Work Regulations and Gas Safe Register Technical Bulletin TB118a including easy-to-use tools for live voltage indication together with locking off devices all supplied in a high-quality soft carry case.

THINK ‘ALIVE’

Three years ago Martindale introduced its six-step protocol to safeguard anyone working on or near an electrical installation. This protocol has since been condensed into the simplified acronym ‘ALIVE’ to make it easy to remember and help reduce the number of electricity-related injuries and fatalities in the workplace.

Ais forAPPROVED KIT. The first step will ensure your equipment meets all legal safety standards. Always make sure that the Voltage Indicators (VI) comply with BS EN61243-3 to ensure that your equipment is functioning correctly and that you can detect dangerous voltages in the circuit.

L is forLOCK OUT. Next, identify the point of isolation, lock it off and place warning tags onto the equipment. A basic lock-off kit should include a selection of MCB Lock Off devices, a padlock with a unique key, a hasp if more than one person is working on a system as well as lock-out tags and warning labels. This will help to prevent anyone from accidentally turning the power back on while you are working on the circuit.

I

is forINITIAL PROVE. After locking out the equipment, test your VI against the proving unit to make sure it is working properly. It is recommended to use a dedicated proving unit matched to the VI to fully test that all LEDs on all ranges are working. A proving unit is safer than the mains and provides a live source wherever you are working.

V is forVOLTAGE TEST. Use your VI to make sure dangerous voltage levels are not in the circuit you are about to work on. Verify that the circuit you intend to work on is the correct circuit which you have safely isolated.

E is forENSURE. Finally, prove the VI against the proving unit again before starting to work on the circuit. Re-test your VI is functioning and working correctly to make sure that no damage has occurred, or fault appeared, on your equipment.

KEEP YOUR VAN ON THE ROAD

Taking a van to an MOT can be a daunting experience, after all it is a key part of any plumbers’ business.

To help tradespeople through the experience, experts at Lease Van have named five avoidable reasons for van MOT failure, which can result in hefty repair bills and business losses. MOT tests check that a vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards, and failure to have a valid certificate could lead to a fine of up to £1000.

Tim Alcock, from Lease Van said: “Vans are an important part of a business for tradespeople so MOT failures can be a serious burden as they must stay off the road until fixed.

“Aside from carrying heavy tools and materials, delivering goods and transporting the team, a van is the base of operations so being without can lead to serious financial losses.

“This is why van owners must be aware of preventable reasons their vehicle could fail, and ensure it is sorted before the test, such as filling up windscreen fluid and fixing frayed seat belts. Tradespeople's vans are prone to accumulating dirt with the nature of their job, and many will be surprised this could lead to an MOT failure.”

Lease Van’s avoidable reasons vans fail a MOT test

Garages can refuse to test a van if it’s too dirty or full of clutter, so it is important to clear out work gear and clean excessive dirt. Number plates must be clean and readable to pass, as well as dirty windows that obstruct the view.

Washer fluid

Despite being such a simple check, a van will fail its MOT if the washers do not have enough liquid to clean the windscreen because it can lead to a build-up of dirt and a restricted view of the road.

Suspension

Avoid travelling on roads littered with potholes, especially at speed, because it can play havoc on a vehicle's suspension. Suspension issues can lead to an MOT failure as it compromises the handling and stability of the vehicle- so make sure to drive carefully.

Seatbelts

MOTs place special attention on the state of seatbelts because they are important safety components. Seatbelts with any defects or faults, including weakened webbing or fraying, will fail.

Tyres

Bristan has expanded its portfolio of bathroom products with the introduction of two new tap ranges this Spring. The company says that the two new tap ranges, Molida and Cruzar, have been designed with installers in mind. It says the new ranges will provide installers with more choice for customers — demonstrated through the ‘knurling pattern’ on the handles of both ranges, the Molida and Cruzar. HOTUN DRY TRAP TUNDISH

The hotun dry trap tundish incorporates a tundish with a wide bowl and a non-return valve. Installers can use it to take pressure relief discharge or temperature relief discharge straight to drain without additional equipment.

The non-return valve prevents foul odours or waste gases entering the living area whilst the tundish air break safeguards against cross contamination with wholesome water. The company says its smallest tundish can deliver all this within just 73mm between pipes. For large unvented cylinders, hotun highflow provides for higher flow rates.

ZENO AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMPS INSTALLEDAT LINCOLNSHIRE NEW BUILD

Warmflow’s Zeno Air Source Heat Pumps have been installed at four new homes in Wigtoft, Boston. The homes are 2600 sq. ft with four bedrooms & three bathrooms. Fitted with underfloor heating on the ground floor and radiators on the first floor, they have been built to use renewable technology in the form of an air source heat pump. The developers SL Developments from Boston worked closely with heating engineers Multi Plumb and Warmflow to provide a modern heating solution for these luxury modern homes. The design team at Warmflow worked with the installation team at Multi Plumb to ensure the correct sizing of the appliance for the property and discuss any special installation requirements.

Heating Engineers Multi Plumb, installed each of the AS02 –R32 Warmflow Zeno Air Source Heat Pump units alongside a Warmflow Nero 290ltr Heat Pump cylinder.

Remote monitoring

With the help of the team at Warmflow, Multi Plumb were able to commission each of the units using Warmflow Warmlink technology which is a 4G pre-installed modem which allows for remote monitoring, diagnostics and efficient fault finding,

designed to ensure that the units are running smoothly without having to attend site for if an error occurs.

STELRAD RADIATORS K3 RADIATORS

K3 radiators have come into their own in recent years as the number of low temperature, renewable heating systems being installed has grown, with more than 60,000 heat pumps installed in the UK in the past year.

Lower temperature heating systems can require larger radiators to achieve the comfort heating levels in a home, and in some homes installing larger radiators may be a problem if the wall space does not allow for them. In these situations, K3 radiators from Stelrad – with three panels and three sets of fins provide 50% more metal heating surface than a standard K2 for example, but from the same size radiator footprint.

Alongside better levels of insulation, these radiators can provide the solution required to keep the temperature at the level needed in a home.

An alternative solution is the use of vertical radiators which have also grown hugely in popularity, another way of providing larger metal surfaces but in a radiator that takes up wall space from top to bottom of a room rather along the length of a wall space.

Top-Fix is a new solution for fitting wastes from above. A two-piece solution, which is ‘dropped-in’ through the waste hole from above, means no parts need to be held in place from below the sink or shower. Once in place, the two main pieces of Top-Fix are then tightened with a bolt, pulling them together and creating a seal which the company says is ‘100% watertight’. It says that there is no need for any sealant – which can help make the job less messy and allow plumbers to keep the work area clean and tidy. PB Plumber goes on a number of call-outs, firstly looking at a problem with a frozen pressure reducing valve. He talks through his thought process as he fault finds the installation, before resolving the problem. PB goes on to demonstrate how the system should be set up using a diagram. His second job, a late-night call-out to a property where water was spraying out two drain cocks flooding a downstairs toilet. After fixing the problem he draws a diagram to explain the installation and what was happening. In the last job on the video he tackles the replacement of an immersion heater in a cylinder.
