Polstead Community Shop Afternoon Of Celebration

The (usually brief) Annual General Meeting for Polstead Community Shop will be held on Saturday 13th May at 2.00pm in the Village Hall. It will be followed by an ‘Afternoon of Celebration’, to mark the completion of the Shop’s recent make-over. The Shop has undergone a lot of changes over the past year and it is hoped that as many people as possible will wish to join us on this occasion to help celebrate our new-look. We will endeavour to keep the Shop open all day and during the afternoon there will be special offers and tastings for all our customers, including a free glass of bubbly in the Shop. We have had to order a new batch of Polstead souvenir mugs, as our present stock has almost run out and we have taken this opportunity to create a new design, which should prove popular with locals and visitors alike. Tea and cakes will be available in the Hall from the end of the AGM and a Celebration Cake (a Daphne’s special) will be cut at 3.00pm. Do come and join the party!

My name is Suzy, my company Makeover My Home is a professional decluttering and organising service, specialising in home restyling and home staging. Most of us have hectic lives, with little time to clear cupboards, wardrobes, rooms – even sheds, garages and lofts - there never seems enough time to do the decluttering or tidying we would all really love to do. Clutter can be overwhelming and stressful – how many of us have trouble finding things in the home as we simply don’t know where to start looking for them? Many of us don’t even know what to wear as there are too many clothes to choose from even though they may not fit or you don’t even like them anymore! Decluttering and organising will give you a sense of ‘freedom’ from all the ‘stuff’ and ‘things’ we unnecessarily keep and surround ourselves with. Maybe you are moving home or downsizing to a smaller property and don’t know what to keep or let go? Maybe you need help with packing or unpacking? Home staging can be carried out if you are selling your home - making your property appeal to a wider selection of buyers, potentially achieving a higher price and a quicker sale. Maybe you’d just like your home restyled in an affordable way according to your budget, I can help you with this. Do you need help with a loved ones’ possessions and property after bereavement or hospitalisation – I have a caring and sensitive approach and can work with you through this difficult time. Fully insured, ICO registered and DBS checked and a proud member of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers (APDO). I offer a free telephone consultation, so please give me a call to discuss any help you may need on 07939 074090 or email me on suzy@makeovermyhome.co.uk. Please visit my website at www.makeovermyhome.co.uk to see the various services and packages I can offer

Your property is our business so visit or call us today to arrange a free home valuation.

Don’t smother our village

Capel St Mary village with 1,200 homes and already overstretched services is Capel St Mary Parish Council campaign fighting plans to smother it with a further 850 houses. Planners are failing to take an Babergh plans will change the face of Capel St Mary for ever overview of how hundreds of new homes will affect the village. The Parish Council Chair, Chris Matthews, said: “Our Parish Plan and Housing Needs Survey shows that Capel can cope with 100 homes. These homes would need to be in clusters of 20 and be for young families or elderly residents who want to down-size into bungalows. “Instead, there are applications and proposals for 850 houses over three sites. Planners will consider to 850 houses each site separately as if the other two sites do not exist. No consideration will be Everybody will be affected given to the problems that 850 more houses will have on the already struggling doctors’ surgery, school, services, roads, parking and infrastructure,” she said. Babergh District Council planning officers have told the Parish Council that there could be presumption in favour of approval for 100 houses on one site and 150 houses on another site when the separate applications go before the Planning Committee in April or in early May. Only in the last 10 days has the Parish Council discovered that Highways England has drawn up outline plans for an improved slip road off the A12 to a new traffic island for access to a site for, first, 150 houses and then another 450. The traffic island would not allow vehicles to join the A12. They would have to drive through the village to join or rejoin the A12. The Parish Council has produced a leaflet setting out plans by developers and planners and what residents can do to oppose them. For further information, please contact the Parish Council Clerk, Julie Lawes, on 01473 314103 (office), e-mail: capel.parishclerk@btinternet.com or Councillor David Thompson on 01473 314185 (home), e-mail davidf.thompson@btinternet.com

It has been a year of steady progression aided by a relatively mild winter (against all the forecasts). We began with a Grand 88 Draw, only moderately supported to our surprise. Even a fantastic number of gifted expensive champagnes, spirits and wines topped off with an exclusive private flight around Hadleigh and the Suffolk coast failed to attract the punters. We settled for break even and the Hadlian’s for some well worth prizes, more in a future H.C.N. Our main activity this winter was receiving and distributing coal that was donated, plus attending the Friday market and helping with utility bill payment, plus advisory support. We are about to investigate the need for personal emergency alarms for those on benefit to cover most age groups including all disabled persons. We do not accrue funds to lie in our bank account, it is there to be used for the benefit of those for whom it is donated. Full details will appear in the June edition of HCN. We shall also be operating in the market again so please do come over and ask if you or someone you know of needs support. Our thanks are due to all those who have contributed financially so basically essential to operate, plus the more tangible items of thermal wear or fuel. We are also grateful for the support of the Town, District and County Councils. Without this support we could not meet our objectives. every Thank you to each and one. With so many people in Hadleigh wanting to throw themselves speedily down hills, the Rugby Club are staging their second Hadleigh Soapbox Races earlier in the season, on July 15th. Of course, the main components of a good kart are its wheels and the local landfill, run by FCC Environment for the local councils, have come good. A scavenging team, led by captain Oli ‘Beerlegs’, spent Saturday morning, dismantling a variety of wheeled scrap vehicles (principally bikes) with help from Lucy, Mel and Graham, the FCC local team. A veritable production line of spanners, strong wrists and muscle produced a mound of very usable Soapbox wheels. Oli said: ‘We’ve had an immense amount of interest in building karts, but know that sourcing wheels can be difficult. A problem no longer!’ He went on: ‘If you want to enter a kart and need wheels contact the race secretary. My advice is to get going; once you start the basic frame comes together quickly and then you get into and want to make refinements, perhaps change your steering decisions and then there is the whole business of decorating the kart. ‘Our grateful thanks to FCC Environment who have joined other local businesses in really getting this going.’ If you want details of entering go to the ‘Hadleigh Soapbox’ facebook page. Alternatively ring the Race Secretary on 07545 545744. Wheels are being looked after by Ainger Holbrow and, once registered, you can go and choose your set free of charge! ‘Defending The Harbour’ Landguard Fort, Felixstowe by Dave Wood

Landguard Fort is situated on a peninsular, opposite Harwich and where the Rivers Stour and Orwell join to flow into the North Sea. It has a long rich history, but its major triumph is the preventing of the last full scale invasion of England by the Dutch on 2nd July 1667 - exactly 350 years ago this summer! By 1900 the Fort was obsolete, until the problem of reliability of large bore breech loading artillery was resolved. The Fort was manned throughout both World Wars, but by the 1950s the rocket age had arrived and in 1956 Coastal Artillery was finally closed down. Dave Wood has been involved with Landguard Fort since the 1980s and was present when the first guided tours were carried out. Total cost is just £19 including coffee on arrival and the talk by Dave Wood in the morning - followed by a buffet lunch. In the afternoon a coach will take us to the Landguard Fort for a visit. We will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the Fort. The coach fare, entry to the Fort and the guided tour are included in the cost. Tea and snacks are available in the Fort or in a nearby beach cafe (cost not included). Suitable footwear should be worn. Early booking is recommended. To book please contact Sue Whiteley - 01787 210945 or email: whiteleysa@hotmail.co.uk

Vintage 1940s Commemorative Weekend in Lavenham 19th – 22nd May 2017

Lavenham will host a wonderful weekend celebrating all things 1940s. The 487th Bombardment Group, 8th US Army Air Force were stationed at nearby Lavenham Airfield (Station 137) during WW2. The Swan at Lavenham has been instrumental in encouraging and supporting the formation of a local committee entitled ‘Friends of Lavenham Airfield’, who are dedicated to keeping the memory of the 487th BG, 8th USAAF alive in Lavenham. The committee, together with vintage events group, The Baker Boy Collective, have organised a series of 1940s events across the village to commemorate the 75th anniversary of US Forces starting to arrive in the East of England in support of WW2, known as ‘The Friendly Invasion’. Over 19th – 22nd May 2017 many events will take place in Lavenham, including: • A 1940s swing dance • Vintage afternoon tea • Airfield Guided Tour • A history talk about the 487th Bombardment Group, 8th USAAF (United States Army Air Force) The 487th Bombardment Group who were based at nearby Lavenham Airfield during WW2, frequented the Airmen’s Bar at The Swan, during that time. There will be a walk to Lavenham airfield and a commemorative service in the church, while you can expect to see 1940s vehicles and vintage fashions worn around the village by The Baker Boy Collective group, together with 1940s reenactors. And on Sunday 21st May Lavenham will be teaming up with the Vintage Affair at Hedingham Castle, a short and picturesque drive away in nearby Essex. Vintage events will continue to be held annually in Lavenham during May leading up to the 75th anniversary of VE Day on 8th May 2020. Between 18th and 21st May 2018 Lavenham will mark the creation of Lavenham Airfield, while between 17th and 20th May 2019 the commencement of operational flights by the 487th Bombardment Group will be remembered. And everything will culminate in a celebration and commemoration of the 75th anniversary of VE Day on 8th May 2020, with events taking place from 8th – 11th May 2020. The vintage events will help support SSAFA – The Armed Forces Charity and Lavenham Community Council, which is raising funds to construct a new preschool building. For general enquiries about the entire event, please contact: Jane Larcombe – The Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa and Secretary of Friends of Lavenham Airfield. Tel: 07787 426371. GSOIBBON S LICITO RS Howard with Mitzi, Heidi and Tilly My dear readers – thank you to my correspondents who wrote about my last column. I should have referred to Hintlesham Golf Club and not Hintlesham Hall Golf Club. I do hope that some of you may visit the Club for a coffee or lunch (Tel. 01473 652761). Furthermore, a grammatical error crept into one of the editions in that I should have penned “Debbie and me”. I am delighted that I have such an exacting readership. The written word is a form of art and it is important that high standards are maintained. As Churchill said, “this is something up with which I will not put”. I am conscious how much you all love to see my doglets and here they are in the picture – as you know they are called Mitzi, Heidi and Tilly and they are loved dearly. I had a scare some weeks ago when Tilly had to have a back operation. We went to the Dick White Clinic in Newmarket where the consultants whose skills are exceptional operated at 1 in the morning. What a marvellous place; if only our hospitals were as good. The “41 Club” was originally an extension of The Round Table and I thank John Winders (john.winders@btinternet.com) for such an enjoyable evening when I addressed members after dinner at The Ram in Hadleigh. I know that there are those of you who are owner-drivers and shun the merits of a chauffeur. With this lovely Spring weather, it is an opportunity for you to perambulate your motor cars through the highways and byways of the County. Next time you are in Lavenham do pop in to see Jonathan Lambert’s new jewellery shop next to The Swan at Number 98/99 High Street. Jonathan and his wife Yasmin specialise in bespoke designs and they have flourishing busts and bronzes (Tel. 01787 881181). With the lighter evenings, my chauffeur Frank and my housekeeper Maria have not been spending as much time playing canasta. In the Winter months, it keeps them amused until the small hours. The mating season is upon us and so they have been very busy; there’s never any peace with animals to look after. Frank has been tending to his onions, he always fears that they will become entangled with weeds. Once that happens, it is a short step to yellow tops and they will be no good for pulling in the Season. And, so we turn to the business in hand. The property market has been reasonably lively and do approach us at an early stage to deal with your conveyancing needs. It is becoming more difficult in every walk of life to find personal service. For legal matters that and experience is available to you in the High Street in Hadleigh. I would always recommend that you should have in place a Will to avoid complications that may otherwise ensue. Lasting Powers of Attorney are important and very useful documents and please do approach us to discuss them. Howard Gibbons

This certificate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk President Trump’s decision to launch Tomahawk missile strikes against Syria has opened yet another high stakes chapter in the whirlwind that is international affairs today. Parliament rose for Easter following the UK’s formal notification to the EU of our intention to leave. It looks like we will be returning to debate the prospect of military conflict – not just in the middle east, but also in dangerous, dubious North Korea. It has been well remarked that Mr Trump’s move to back armed action by the US against President Assad represents a significant volte face on his part. Who knows, perhaps this unpredictability is an asset as despots like Assad and North Korea’s Kim are unable to second guess him, and perhaps feel more wary of aggression? Of course, if we are to assume that US sources are right in stating that Assad was responsible for launching chemical weapons on his own people, there is an argument for a limited and proportionate response. We certainly now need maximum international pressure applied to the Russians to cajole them in to breaking with Assad; equally, we need the Chinese to lean on North Korea so that they don’t proceed with further missile tests. Wishful thinking, perhaps. Whatever we do, in my view we must proceed with maximal caution. My fear is that we risk repeating the now tried and tested pattern of a bellicose linguistic ratchet that creates its own self-fulling momentum for conflict. With an unpredictable world, and an unpredictable president, we need to support our allies without adding to the growing sense of a militaristic adrenaline rush. I have only voted once in Parliament on sending UK forces to war, and that was very strictly to extend existing UK air strikes against ISIL terrorists in Iraq over the border into Syria - with no evidence of civilian casualties to date. I certainly did not vote for ‘regime change’, a phrase now re-emerging in Washington in relation to Assad. The policy of ‘regime change’ has failed in Iraq, and this is why I repeat the need for caution rather than a rush of blood.

The Boule-in's Celebrity Fête!

"We had the most fantastic Fête du Printemps" exclaims Cathy Bullen, proprietor of Bildeston's now renowned Decorative French Lifestyle boutique The Boule-in "and we are planning on making our summer fair Fête d'Été the most prodigious event we've held yet! Having made a conscious decision to enjoy the lifestyle of dividing our time between Suffolk and Provence (and less time in London!) we have increased our focus on our established quarterly French Fêtes in Suffolk: It was wonderful to have had so many of our London customers visit us in Bildeston during the spring fair and we are now absolutely thrilled to have our friend and Kennington neighbour, Mark Hill, author and TV celebrity antiques expert, come and hold a 'Valuation Day' during our Fête d'Été !" Throughout the week of this delightful French event The Boule-in offers antiques and decorative collectables for both home & garden, baskets, books, balsamics and even plant stalls to entice and inspire you to create your own piece of Provençal living in Suffolk! News from Whatfield CEVCP School

It’s difficult to believe that Summer is here already. As usual our pupils are thoroughly enjoying being outside in the fantastic environment we have, and are looking forward to all the sporting and outside activities we provide. Pupils are planning what to plant in the gardens and allotment, and the daffodils in the Early Years area are looking beautiful. Mothers and Grandmothers were particularly pleased to receive gifts of daffodils for Mother’s day from the children at Whatfield, thanks to our helpful volunteer gardeners! Although we may seem to be out and about a lot at sporting festivals and tournaments, we also take pride in our academic work. This year we have been working hard on our writing, and making good use of all the opportunities

to develop and create original work. We have been using a system called IPEELL, which helps give pupils confidence in structuring their writing and has had a positive effect. We will be sharing some of our fantastic work at the pyramid training day on writing in April. Pupils continue to learn the ukulele, and have been learning a whole variety of new songs. The ukuleles were funded from a generous grant from the Rosa Simons fund, and pupils have had great fun learning to play them with John, our specialist from Upbeat music. We were so proud to be told the fantastic news that we have achieved the bronze Linguamarque for our brilliant work on modern foreign languages – French is taught to all of the children at Whatfield, even as young as Reception! This award reflects the effort we put into ensuring that we work at a good standard and provide a wide range of learning experiences for our pupils. Our aim is to look out into the wide world and beyond! We have lots of exciting activities to look forward to in the new term, such as forest schooling, the food farm fair and our Summer presentation. As always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you will be made very welcome. Telephone 01473 823 309 or email admin@whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk to make an arrangement to meet us and take a tour. www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk

Hadleigh Hall has become the 29th care home under the ownership of Suffolk based Kingsley Healthcare Group

For Quality & Personal Service FENSA from Start to Finish

TEL/FAX: 01473 823584 • MOB 07885 941615 49 Benton Street, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 5AR

The 54-bed home in Friars Road, on the edge of Hadleigh, will eventually create employment for more than 50 people. A substantial six-figure sum has been spent on refurbishing the 19th century property ahead of opening. Kingsley’s operations director Debbie McGovern said: “We fell in love with the building as soon as we saw it. This is a wonderful location to offer 24-hour nursing, residential and dementia care. “We have wonderful landscaped gardens and excellent views across rolling Suffolk countryside, and yet we are just on the edge of Hadleigh and only a short drive away from Ipswich and Sudbury.” She stressed that it was a completely fresh start for the home under the new ownership of a renowned national provider. She said: “As a company we are passionate in our belief that our residents should have the best possible quality of life. Providing first class care will be at the heart of everything we do at Hadleigh Hall. “Our staff treat residents as they would their own family and at all times respect the fact they are individuals with their own needs and preferences. “Our interest in our residents is genuine; we learn from listening, engaging and responding to feedback. Above all else, Hadleigh Hall is our residents’ home.” Operations manager Helen Gosling, who led the development of Kingsley’s acclaimed person-centred approach to dementia care, called WINGS, said: “We are managing Hadleigh Hall in a very special way in that the focus of every member of staff, whatever their job, will be meeting individuals physical and social needs.” She said our newly appointed manager, Emma Beckett, has vast experience in the care sector and, importantly, someone who shared Kingsley’s values and passion. The home is still seeking candidates for positions as nurses, support workers, domestics and activity coordinators. Kingsley was established in 1999 by Daya Thayan and his wife Sumi with the purchase of their first care home in Lowestoft. Since then the family owned business has grown into a national provider employing 1,600 people and caring for more than 1,100 residents. The company passed an important milestone last summer when staff moved into their new head office, Kingsley House, in the centre of Lowestoft. While planning continued national growth Mr Thayan insists on retaining Kingsley’s family values. “Every home we run must be of a standard that would fitting for my own parents,” he said. Get up and glow for St Elizabeth Hospice

Join more than 2,000 people at St Elizabeth Hospice’s biggest event of the year, the Midnight Walk 2017! The hugely popular event is taking place on Saturday 20 May 2017 for its 11th year and back by popular demand is the neon theme! However, this year’s Midnight Walk will have a few alterations to the past few years, with a brand new start and finish location for the event – the Cornhill in Ipswich town centre! Also amended for the 2017 event are the two brand new routes – a six mile and a 12 mile – both of which will pass the hospice on Foxhall Road so all walkers will have the opportunity to hang a personalised tag on the Tree of Remembrance. Catherine Sheppard, St Elizabeth Hospice’s events and challenges fundraiser, said: “We are very excited to launch the Midnight Walk 2017 and we hope it will be as successful as 2016 which raised an incredible £220,000 for the hospice, making a huge difference to our patients and their families. “Back by popular demand is the neon theme which was very successful last year! It was fantastic to watch Ipswich glow last year and we wanted to bring that back again to the town.” All participants will receive an exclusive Midnight Walk 2017 T-shirt, medal and a hot chocolate at the finish line. WER SHOP at Kersey Mill

The Flower Shop at Kersey Mill

Spring is one of our favourite times of year. Not only are the days longer and the sun shines but the spring bulbs bloom too. Spring flowers always have the most incredible scents and we love opening the doors of The Flower Shop in the morning and being greeted by their gorgeous perfume. We have had a very busy few months recently with Mother's day, Easter and lots of wonderful springtime weddings too. The most exciting thing though is relocating The Flower Shop into our new premises here at Kersey Mill. At the beginning of March this year we received the keys to our newly built shop, just next door to our old premises in The Brick Barn. A new, light and airy space to showcase our beautiful blooms as well as more space to create our bespoke bouquets and arrangements. Along with our new fixtures and fittings we have filled the shelves with more striking and unusual vases and pots, plants and candles and lots of wonderful things for the home. If you get chance, please do pop in and say hello and see our new home! Sudbury Festival Of Performing Arts

The month-long 2017 Sudbury Festival of Performing Arts culminated on Sunday with the Festival Concert which was a great success. Performers in Dance, Music and Speech & Drama from across the Festival provided a brilliant afternoon's entertainment at Ormiston Sudbury Academy. Darrell Barnard-Jones from Long Melford was an excellent Compere and amused a capacity audience between acts. The Mayor of Sudbury, Councillor Sue Ayres, attended and presented the two main awards:- The Bernard Johnson Award for Excellence, for an outstanding performer aged 16-25 in Music, Speech & Drama or Dance, to be used towards further studies, was won by Felicity Martin, for her Dance entries. Felicity tap-danced her way to the Concert from Beccles, The Suffolk Free Press Anniversary Cup, for the most promising performer aged 15 or under in Music, Speech & Drama or Dance, was presented to Alexander Sharratt for his Drama entries. At the Concert, Alexander performed a speech by Prince Hal from Shakespeare's Henry IV. Throughout the Festival, performers age 4 - 74, came to Sudbury from all over East Anglia to compete. With the help of our band of around 40 volunteer stewards, our reputation as the 'Friendly Festival' continues. A big thank you to all involved. Mary Davies, Festival Chairman

So, if you are reading this before Thursday May 4, please do consider voting for me. Thank you once again, Robert Lindsay Green Party candidate for Cosford in the county council elections

HIGHCLIFF VET

I just wanted to say a big thank you for all the good wishes so many have given me ahead of the county council election on May 4. It has been a pleasure to speak to so many door to door in the 18 villages dotted around the beautiful countryside that makes up the Cosford division. Many residents have told me that they are willing to vote locally for someone who they know is working hard for the area and can make a difference. The voting history in Cosford, where I came a close second last time, shows that there are only two real two contenders here – the new Conservative or myself. Labour, UKIP and LibDems can’t win here. We already have a Conservative MP, a Conservative-controlled county council and a Conservative controlled Babergh District Council. Even if I am elected, Suffolk Council will in all likelihood still be controlled by the Conservatives. But many residents have told me that I’m the only party representative they ever see outside election time, working for our community. Even if they normally vote Conservative, they appreciate that any party that is in power needs some kind of check, someone to hold them to account. It needs someone, for example, to expose Conservative-controlled Babergh council when they decide to move their Hadleigh headquarters to a rented floor in Ipswich without asking their residents; someone to ask questions about why there is talk of building new roads when existing rural roads are not being repaired, why village bus services – the lifeline for our communities - can’t be made more effective; someone to help find solutions for village-sized holes in broadband coverage, someone to push them on tackling speeding in some of our congested villages. And that is what I aim to do.

The firm has an outstanding reputation in the region and there are enormous opportunities to build on the excellent work of Alistair and the Partners in a market that is changing rapidly.” Brian Morron, Senior Partner, added, “Charles’ experience in leadership roles and local knowledge proved the decisive points in what was a tough choice between a range of excellent candidates. We are delighted to have him on board for the next phase of Gotelee’s development.” The firm also announced the impending retirement of Brian Morron from the role of Senior Partner. He will continue at the firm as a consultant. After 16 years in the role he hands over in April to Peter Crix, currently head of the Wills and Probate department at Gotelee. Mr Crix has been a solicitor with Gotelee for 37 years having been based at both the Ipswich and Hadleigh offices. He said, “A time of change at the firm with Brian’s change of role and Charles’ arrival as well as continuing plans to grow our business. An exciting point to take on this leadership challenge and keep the momentum going. We have a strong team here across our various offices and I see good growth ahead”. www.gotelee.co.uk

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers

Despite it being Easter Saturday, April’s walk attracted 8 walkers for what was agreed to be one of the best walks for some time. We may decide to repeat it later in the year - with a few modifications for interest! A change of pace for May’s walk on Saturday 20th which will start at Chantry Park, Ipswich and end at the Hintlesham George a distance of 6.5 miles. Those feeling energetic can then continue the walk back to Hadleigh while others catch the bus. In detail, we will catch the 90 bus service from Hadleigh bus station at 0940 (Co op side) and alight at Chantry Park. We will then walk to Sproughton, along the River Gipping to Bramford then Thornbush Hall, Grindle Farm, Burstall Hall, Burstall and on to Hintlesham via Home Wood. We may be at the George in time for the 1233 bus back to Hadleigh. For those walking on to Hadleigh we will decide on the day whether to take the shorter route back via Cobbold’s Farm or the slightly longer route via Aldham Priory. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Hadleigh Carpet Care Professional Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Services

It’s Showtime

I have often found myself thinking how lucky I am to live in the fantastic county of Suffolk. Not only does it have the benefit of both coastal and rural beauty but it also has very vibrant towns and villages and across all these, throughout the year, there is so much to do. But it is from early to late summer that you can be spoilt for choice from the sheer number of shows fetes, streetfayres and festivals to choose from. Some of my happiest childhood memories are from various days out around the county: sitting on straw bales eating an ice-cream and watching clog or morris dancers or many other street performers. Or heading to the coast to go crabbing or paddle in our- not always as warm as would be liked – sea. There are music festivals that cover tastes of all genres, ages and cultures and it is worth looking out for smaller shows that utilise some of the great venues, supported and run by local people. We have food festivals to make your mouth water just from perusing the wonderful array of local produce on offer and where you can leave with a mountain of goodies that taste even better knowing they have been grown or made in our very own county. In my previous job, I was involved in attending many of the local events from the very small community led days to the largest we hold in the county and despite it being work I always enjoyed the people and the atmosphere there. This year, I am planning to go along as a member of the public and enjoy things from the other side but not forgetting the months and months of tremendous hard work the event organisers put in. From maritime to rural, covering everything from music to dance and glorious food festivals and of course, never forgetting, your local events where the community has a chance to get together you could be hard-pressed to find enough days in the calendar to do everything. But give it a go. jenny-may.com

The Ladykillers

Following the success of their last two productions, Sudbury Dramatic Society have begun rehearsals for their next production which is The Ladykillers at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre from Tuesday 9th to Saturday 13th May at 7.45pm. Classic black comedy The Ladykillers is written by Graham Linehan, author of Father Ted and of The IT Crowd, and based on the original Ealing Comedy. The original production was a huge success in London’s West End. In a house near Kings Cross station a criminal gang take rooms with a sweet little old lady and her diseased parrot. Posing as amateur musicians, they proceed to plot to rob the mail train but they reckon without their determined landlady and, as their plans start coming off the rails, the comedy darkens and the gang begins to disintegrate. The question of who will survive and who will face the music starts to take some unexpected turns. The Ladykillers is directed by Malcolm Hollister who directed the successful 39 Steps last year and the recent Quay Theatre pantomime Treasure Island. The Ladykillers is on at The Quay Theatre Tuesday 9th to Saturday 13th May at 7.45pm and tickets are available now from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury.org.uk

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre

Summer at last and we are in full swing. I love having my door hooked back so that I can see what’s going on outside. I think my riders like it too. Piles of shed horsehair refuse to be swept up neatly and annoy Lyn, who likes our yard to look spotless. She has been Springcleaning recently and tidying the stores. (So its not a gypsy encampment you can see in the photo, only Lyn on the warpath.) My room houses little Babs of course and the hoist, three sets of mounting steps, a day bed, disco lighting and some interesting toys but we keep it pretty tidy. It will soon be full of cakes! I like the smell: kind people bring in their baking ready for the Hadleigh Show on May 20th where The Shelley Centre has a stand selling wonderful plants and, hopefully, masses of cakes for visitors to buy. Do come and support us with your custom, all the money raised will help keep me (and my live friends) in the manner to which we are accustomed! Talking of keeping us going, we were very pleased to welcome Alan Fosker of the Brett Valley Lodge in Hadleigh, who came to present us with a fat cheque just before Easter. He can be seen giving it to Chris, with Alfie in attendance. Alan came to watch me in action too, so he gets a big vote of approval from me, and our thanks for his personal sponsorship of two races on the April race night. Are any of my readers race winners, I wonder? On May 6th some of our riders will be joining us for an Own A Pony day. Watch C this space for photos in my next blog. Till then thank you for your company and enjoy yourselves! Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.htm. Telephone: 01473 824172

Shane Norman 1963-2017

Barbara, Shannon, Lucy, Alex, Sonia and Pansy would like to thank everyone for their love, messages of sympathy following Shane's sad passing and the overwhelming support at his funeral on the 7th April. As many people know, Shane spent a great deal of time in Ipswich Hospital, we cannot thank Critical Care and Shotley ward enough for all their care and kindness. Shane wished donations to be made to his regular ward; Rushmere day unit, of which we are gratefully still receiving donations for. Also a huge thank you to those who donated to Lupus UK at the celebration of his life, we raised £60! As Shane's family we would like to thank R Gwinnell and Sons funeral directors and Rev Canon David Atkins for a wonderful service. Shane was an incredible Husband, Dad, Brother, Grandson and friend who was loved by many and missed by all.

For total peace of mind...

Here at Abacus Fire and Security we would always say YES, annual maintenance of your system is always recommended to ensure that your system runs as smoothly as possible. We all rely on our security systems to provide peace of mind … what could be more reassuring than having the system checked by a fully trained, competent professional to set your mind at rest. Some insurance companies also have the stipulation that systems are maintained annually, it is worth checking your policy if you are unsure. Hadleigh and District Garden Club

Wednesday April 12th If you are looking for somewhere that has a great choice of quality plants which are very reasonably priced then Paugers Plant Nursery at Depden just outside Bury St Edmunds is just the place to go. They offer over 1500 different varieties of plants and shrubs, as well as box and yew topiary. There are also 'hard to find' and unusual plants, as members of Hadleigh and District Garden club found when we made our visit there last month. The nursery has been open since 2002 and is run by Paul and Geraldine Arnold, and their own beautiful garden shares the site with the nursery. Their dedication shows in the careful layout of the nursery and the really healthy plants which are on offer. We were really spoilt for choice and everyone came away with a little something they could find a spot for in their own garden. Word has obviouly got around as our members were only some of the many people there that afternoon. We made our way there by car and travelled through some lovely Suffolk villages, and were rewarded with the sight of a hare lolloping leisurely across the country lane ahead of us. The nursery is somewhere that many of our members had not visited before and I know that some are already planning a return visit. Monday May 8th May sees us back in Hadleigh at the town hall on Monday 8th at 7.30pm when our guest speaker, Rob Tibbs, will be sharing his expertise on patio planting. The competition for that evening will be one flowering pot plant. The cost is £3 for non members and £1 for members, to include refreshments. We hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman

East Anglian Garden Group

Simon White from Peter Beales Roses gave his talk, The Romance of Old Roses, to a full hall at Hitcham at our last meeting of the season, before the autumn talks resume on the 7th of October. Simon is the director of the nursery, and has been with them for 36 years. His expert knowledge inspired us all, telling us about the various cultivars in their family groups, with recommendations regarding position, fragrance and disease resistance. He brought along various products, some developed exclusively at the nursery, which would promote the very best rose growth, quite a few members went away armed with these, and there were a lot of sales of rose bushes too! We were given ideas for other plants to complement the rose border, and shown his plans for the future development of the nursery at Attleborough. An excellent talk, enjoyed by all. April sees the start of our summer outings. The first one, on 27th April, is to Ousden Gardens. In the morning, there will be a tour of the Dip on the Hill garden, and in the afternoon, Ousden House, where the tour will be given by the owner or Head Gardener. Transport will be by car. On May 20th, the outing will be to Cambridge Botanic Garden plant fair, and will be either by car, or coach depending on numbers, and on June 4th, we will be going to Spencers, at Great Yeldham, a romantic garden laid out by Lady Anne Spencer, with renovation by Tom Stuart-Smith. All the details of trips, prices and times can be found on the website, trips are open to non- members, and we welcome new members, so do please contact the secretary, Matt Long, 01449 741551, for further information. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Down to Earth ...with Dave The seed and plant sowing time has finally arrived. The various brassica plants are now well established on the allotment, planted in neat rows and covered with the upturned bottomless florist's flowerpots that I have used with much success for many years. They keep the pigeons and rabbits off the small plants and make watering much easier. The lack of any rain is a bit of a nuisance this year, with the watering can having to be used quite a bit. The first rows of early potatoes are in and earthed up, just in case we get a late frost. Various rows of seeds have been sown, including spinach, chard, carrots and parsnips. With a little bit of sun it is amazing how quickly the little spinach seedlings begin to show, though the parsnips will take longer to germinate. The daffodils are finished for this year, what a lovely show they have put on everywhere. Only snap off any dead heads and definitely don't cut off or tie up the foliage, it can look a bit untidy if they are growing in a lawn, but just mow around them for a while. We have had our first picking of asparagus, not many yet as the bed desperately needs a good soaking of rain. Back at home the hostas, overwintered in their smart new row of matching pots, have appeared as if by magic, pushing through the slate chipping mulch and growing at a terrific rate. They will get regular watering and a liquid feed once a week to keep them looking good. By growing them in large pots we don't seem to have many slug and snail problems. But I can be seen out most nights with a torch and a pot of salt water, picking off any that dare to appear. Another job at home is planting up the various hanging baskets, the choice of plants is vast. Most garden centre outlets have offers of suitable plants for about a pound a pot. Depending on the size of the basket and the size of the plants, you can fit six or seven plants into a basket, trailing ones round the side and a more upright one in the centre, use a general purpose compost with a little sharp sand mixed in with it. I always put a plastic flowerpot saucer in the bottom of the basket to act as a water reservoir. Once planted, hang the basket in a shaded, protected position to allow the plants to become settled into their new home. Then, after a couple of weeks, move it to its more exposed position for the summer months. Regular watering and a weekly feed should give a good show. If you have a suitable spot why not try a basket of cherry tomatoes? Three plants in a 14 inch basket will give loads of lovely fruit during the summer months. A wide choice of plants is available, just make sure that you choose a trailing type rather than a cordon type. That's all for this time, Dave

Manningtree Rotary Club Mayflower Cross Country Run and Walk

Due to popular demand Manningtree Rotary is bringing back the Mayflower Walk for 2017. This year we are adding something new, the option of a cross country run. The route follows the beautiful Essex Way from Harwich to Manningtree through 13 miles of lovely Essex countryside. For those wanting a shorter route there is an alternative finish at Wrabness. The event is taking place on 28th May and check in is at the Harwich Low Lighthouse from 9:30am. Runners will start at 10:30 and walkers 10 minutes later. Entry costs £10 in advance and £12 on the day. Children under 12 go free but must be registered. To join in the fun, register online now at mayflower17.eventbrite.co.uk The entry fee covers the administrative costs of the event and contributes to the club’s own charity fund. It’s also a great opportunity for participants to get sponsorship for their own favourite charity. Organiser Rotarian David Willis said “This has been a very well supported event in the past but unfortunately we were unable to run it last year. We are hoping to have a big turn out again this year as it’s a brilliant day out for all. Our Rotarians will be on hand as usual to marshal the route and man the water stations.” Enter online at: mayflower17.eventbrite.co.uk

After 10 – 14 days your body starts to realise that it’s ok without its sugar/chocolate/alcohol fix and you should start to feel many benefits which include sleeping better and having more energy. You may even lose a few pounds into the bargain! Our lifestyle & eating patterns have changed dramatically over the last few decades and had a major impact on our waistlines. Processed foods and takeaways have become a regular part of our lives and we are paying the price with obesity, diabetes, heart disease etc all increasing as a result. All these conditions (and others) can be improved by maintaining a healthy weight. There have been many cases of Type 2 Diabetes being reversed with the need for medication becoming unnecessary. Would you want to have to rely on a cocktail of medication (sometimes for the rest of your life) to keep you healthy when you could take control of your own health by losing some weight. If you feel the need to break those habits and lose some weight (average weight loss is a stone a month*) into the bargain why not try Cambridge Weight Plan..? Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support, particularly important at the start of the process. Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has over 8 years’ experience so, for individual help with your weight problem, contact her today on 01449 737113/07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp. Meet the team at the Hadleigh Show! #

It is the 178th Hadleigh Show this year and definitely a great day out! For those of you who are regulars or for those who have not been before, make sure you come and see us on the 20th May. We will be between the Grand Ring and the Countryside Ring. So keep your eyes peeled for us! It’s a great opportunity to meet the team and most importantly our fluffiest new member. Make sure to bring along the kids because we have lots of exciting things planned from 'guessing how many sweets are in the jar' to sporting activities and free giveaways. We offer a range of services; Physiotherapy, Sports and Swedish massage, Clinical Pilates, Acupuncture and Respiratory Physiotherapy, so come and see us at the show to find out more information about our services along with the range of products we sell. Tickets are available online or at the gate. For more information please visit www.hadleighshow.co.uk

Hadleigh & District Probus Club

The object of the Club, established in 1998, is "To promote fellowship amongst retired and semi-retired professional and business men". We meet for lunch on the third Wednesday of each month at The George, High Street, Hadleigh, where Tori and Paul make us welcome and provide us with excellent meals. This year we again held our customary Annual Dinner in the Town Hall Dining Room on 5th April. The turnout of members and guests were well served by Chaplin Catering of Naughton. Following previous happy experiences we visited the Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club again last year for our Ladies Lunch on 3rd August. Our high expectations were well met by an excellent meal in elegant surroundings. Members enjoy the occasional outing: this year we are planning a quiet trip (by electric launch!) down the River Stour from Sudbury for lunch at Henny “Swan”. We had two lunchtime speakers during the year. In October Trevor Sheldrick, the Hadleigh Town Mayor and County Councillor, spoke about his involvement with Community First Responders; in January Mike Brennan told us about his Great War project identifying the stories behind the names on the Memorial. The number of members in the Club is limited, mostly by the accommodation available for lunch, but we have room for a few more. Any person interested in joining should, in the first instance, contact the Secretary, Chris Drake, on 01473 808147, email chrisdrake29@talktalk.net.

Hadleigh Orchestra

Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Lisa Patchett For the first time ever, our Summer Concert this year will take place in St. Mary’s, Hadleigh, and we are most grateful that this has been made possible. One reason for this is so that we can use the splendid organ for a performance of a Handel Organ Concerto (soloist John Cooper). Also in the programme will be Dukas’ popular ‘Sorcerer’s Apprentice’, Beethoven’s First Symphony and two very popular arias by Puccini. More next month, but please note the date now: June 11th. 6.30 p.m. John Druce (Chairman, Hadleigh Orchestra)

The Friends of St Mary’s contributes £27k towards repairs to Hadleigh Church

The Friends of St Mary’s Church Hadleigh have just contributed £27,107 towards repairs to the stonework holding the windows of Hadleigh’s famous medieval church. Natural “wear and tear” over the centuries has resulted in some of the windows now requiring substantial maintenance and repair work. The need for these repairs was established in 2013, but the funds for the work were not available. Hadleigh’s Parochial Church Council (PCC) therefore looked to the Friends to help raise the funds for this essential work. “This was quite a challenge for the Friends,” explains the charity’s chairman John Hunt. “We were a very small group relying mainly on membership fees and small events. Clearly we had to up our game and preparations were put in hand to launch a major appeal to include donations, legacies and corporate contributions. “The Friends have received some very generous donations recently and we are pleased to have been able to make this £27,000 payment. However, the upcoming repair and maintenance requirements for St Mary’s are so substantial that we need to redouble our efforts,” Mr Hunt added. The Friends of St Mary’s Church Hadleigh is a charitable organisation dedicated to preserving the architectural heritage of Hadleigh’s magnificent historic Church and Deanery Tower. Ollie (the Black) Cat was caught napping recently when two ladies called in to see him. Unlike me, he hides himself away from visitors and was surprised to be discovered atop the hay where he keeps watch! And there’s plenty to see lately, Mum says we have converted to running a franchise for Noah and his Ark as the animals have been coming two by two. There’s Patch and Missie, a friendly pair of scruffy Jack Russells, several pairs of rabbits looking for gardens to occupy rather than tiny hutches, and one year old sibling cats Nancy and Ronnie. Ollie says they are a bit bemused and nervous at the moment, wondering why they are shut up in a cattery but they will be fine when re-homed. The Fundraisers enjoyed another warm welcome from Whatfield residents at our Easter Fair which raised £1000 last month. Thank you to Hadleigh Maid for donating a big chocolate Easter egg, top prize in our raffle, won by Margaret Avis for Tanya. Our craft ladies will have a stall at Gladwells Charity Open Day, Copdock Mill, Old London Road, Copdock, IP8 3LA, 9am on 13th May. Our Summer Sale on 3rd June from 10.30am at St.Luke’s Church Hall, Church Street, Tiptree, CO5 0SU. After all that activity, relax at our Summer Dance, 1st July at Assington Village Hall, CO10 5LW, tickets via pfrenchm@aol.com or phone 01206 263113 The waters have receded so please visit the animals soon but don’t take on a pet on a whim, it is a serious business involving years of committed dedication. Animals are just as much of a responsibility as children, even a little dog like me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. French’s Care Haven and Care Farm

It is lovely to see the hustle and bustle of the town and all the gardens starting to take shape for the summer. How it puts a skip in the heart seeing all the trees and flowers in bloom and all the wildlife in full flow of busyness. At French’s we would love to welcome a volunteer or two that like to strim, trim and mow, even someone who would give our wooden buildings a lick of paint. Keeping fit and active outdoors is the way to stay healthy and keep the mind active, so why don’t you give it a go, give me a call and pop along, we would love to have you on board helping us. The phone has been busy with people calling to rehome their animals, it is sad that we cannot help more, but with little in the way of sponsors it is hard to take on the extra financial burden. If you have a spare £10+ a month to help then please do contact us, the contact details are below. We are looking forward to the Suffolk Show which French’s get an invite to on 31st May 1st June we are in the white area, stand 559, come and say hello and have some homemade cake and a cup of tea or coffee with us. This year we have also been invited to the Tendering Hundred show on 8th July. We are still waiting for the Hadleigh Show to except us, it is so sad we get turned away each year, when we are in walking distance of the show ground. We will be starting our pony - groom and ride days in May, so book your child in to spend some time with Coco, our dear little pony. I am looking to rent a property within a half hour drive of Hadleigh. I have been with my previous house landlord for the last 10+ years, but this summer my lovely home set in an 8 acre wood, is to be knocked down. Somewhere quiet or in a private location on a long let would be ideal, if you can help please call me. Would you like to be head of our media or fund raising? If you have some spare time to get involved and possibly learn new skills, or show us your skills, let’s meet and I will introduce you to our animals and the young people who have had confidence or mental health problems that we help, we would love to see you. Urgently Needed....Hay and straw for our rescued horses and Donkeys, if you or someone you know has some spare last year’s hay or straw sitting in their barn, please pass it on to us, our animals get through so much and your hay or straw would be very much appreciated. Time to Review Your Nutritional Supplements for Free

At Health Foods For You in Sudbury the friendly team are offering customers the opportunity to take advice on their supplements. Most of us fall in to a habit of taking the same tablets day after day and overlook reviewing and updating our tablets taken to reflect change in circumstance. That maybe dictated by illness, time of year, sporting activities or diet and of course age. The shop has a great range too of additive, sugar free supplements for babies and children. Let us help you make sure you have adapted these changes by reflecting these needs to the supplements you take. Why take 3 or 4 tablets when 1 that covers it all may be available in a complex? Furious splashing on the Brett?

It can only be that major community event 'The Hadleigh Duck & Raft Race' run by the Scouts and scheduled for Sunday 4th June this year. This annual tradition is now entering its 10th year and the frolics seem to get more exciting each year. The ducks are all in training under the guidance of Spirit Fitness who are regulars at the Scout HQ (Not real ones, plastic ones btw) and previous champions of the rafting side of the celebrations are talking the talk of this year being a classic. If you have already been, you'll need no persuasion - 10am start at Toppesfield Bridge. If you haven't been, bring your family to one of Hadleigh's highlights. The Party afterwards, as per tradition, is at The George. What better way to spend a Sunday in June? If you want to buy a duck - talk to a Scout. If you would like to enter a raft team, ring the Race Secretary on 07 545 545 744

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson I have had a life-changing experience lately, my 91 year-old mother has come to live with us in Hadleigh. Now before you congratulate her on passing on her cooking skills, please bear in mind that this is a woman who went on a Cordon Bleu cookery course without knowing how to boil an egg. And the sad thing is, you probably think I am joking! I kid you not, dear reader. Anyhow, my mum is vegetarian and much as though I love our locally produced meat, I have a duty of care to the small matriarch who has the cooking skills that I can only liken to Ria from Butterflies – were she to try and make yoghurt it would resemble ‘worried milk’. Easy Spinach and Garlic Fusilli Ingredients 300g fusilli pasta, 2 tbsps olive oil, 1 onion 3 garlic cloves, 250g frozen spinach, defrosted, 1 lemon Handful fresh flatleaf parsley To serve: Parmesan or vegetarian alternative Method Bring a large pan of water to the boil, then add the pasta and cook for 10 minutes or until al dente. Drain, reserving a ladleful of the water. Finely chop the onion and slice the garlic. Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in the frying pan, then fry the onion for 5 minutes. Add the garlic and spinach and cook for a further 3-4 minutes. Grate the zest of the lemon into the pan and squeeze in the juice. Add the cooked pasta, reserved pasta water and remaining olive oil. Roughly tear the parsley and toss through. Season well with salt and pepper, and shave cheese over to serve.

Brian Palfreman 1934 - 2017

Pauline and family would like to thank all who attended the celebration service for the life of Brian, the many messages of sympathy and for donations received. Very many thanks to Rev. Joyce Willis for conducting both services and to Mandie and all the staff at Kingsbury & Saunders.

Re-instating the Suffolk Long House at Orchard Barn

Exciting news! Planning permission has been passed for the re-instatement of the timber frame at Orchard Barn. The Long House was first built in the 1580s. Last lived in during the 1930’s, this important heritage building is to be rescued from the brambles and constructed ‘like for like’ using local trees, coppiced hazel and home-dug daub. Wherever possible original timbers will be repaired and reused. With over 2,000 students and volunteers involved so far, OBee Community Interest Company is looking forward to welcoming more people from the local and wider community to this unique living history project. The photograph shows the old house in the 1960s before it fell over! Orchard Barn has a unique link to Sir Thomas Gresham who in 1565 founded the Royal Stock Exchange in London. Sir Gresham owned some fine woodland in Battisford. He brought 200 carpenters to the area to convert his trees into the frame for the Stock Exchange. The remains of the sawpits can still be made out on Battisford Common. Of course he would have taken the best timber for the main project, but there would have been lesser grade timbers left over. We think they may have been used in the Orchard Barn Long House as its timbers are completely oversized! If you are interested in getting involved as a volunteer or participating in a timber frame/repair course, please email sarah@orchardbarn.org.uk or phone 01473 658193.

SKy Watch

by Neil Norman

The nights are well and truly lengthening now as we race on wards towards Summer Solstice next month (half the year gone already!). Since I last wrote, we have had two comets in the pre-dawn sky go into outburst (A sudden and rapid brightening) and almost become naked eye objects, but not quite. More on those later.... So now for the monthly notes. The Sun May 10th, Rise 05.09, Set 20.36; May 15th, Rise 05.01, Set 20.43; May 20th, Rise 04.54, Set 20.51; May 25th, Rise 04.48, Set 20.58; May 30th Rise 04.43, Set 21.04. The Moon Full 10th May, New 25th May. The Planets: Venus By the months end, those of you who rise early can see it 20 minutes before Sunrise shinning brilliantly at magnitude -4.4 in the N.East direction. The planet appears large in size and pure white so cannot be mistaken. Jupiter Is a very prominent object in the evening skies, shining at a magnitude of -2.3 in the constellation of Virgo in the East-South-East sky. Again it cannot be mistaken as it is a golden yellow colour. A pair of binoculars will show you the 4 main Moons of the planet; Ganymede, Callisto, Io and Europa. The planet is just below the Moon on May 7th. Saturn At the start of the month it will be rising at Midnight and shinning at magnitude 0.2, meaning it is easily located and is a yellow colour. Those who need some help will find the Moon nearby on the 13th. The planet is currently in the constellation of Ophiuchus. Now to the comets. If you were out in the pre-dawn morning (and knew where to look) you would have been able to pick up 2 comets in binoculars; C/2015 ER61 and the newly discovered C/2017 E4. The image here is of C/2014 E4 taken by its discoverer and good friend of mine, Terry Lovejoy (Brisbane, Australia). The comet was only discovered on March 9th this year as it raced in to a perihelion point of 0.4 AU on May 24th. It was expected to be a dim comet, reaching only magnitude 10 at best, meaning the use of a telescope would be needed to see it, but then it suddenly brightened up to magnitude 6 in the course of 3 days. For this to happen the comet must have had some trauma to the nucleus. The nuclei of a comet is a very delicate thing, loosely held together lumps of ice and rock that can easily fall apart when subjected to the heat of the Sun as they approach perihelion in their orbits. You will note that the comet appears green in colour. This can only be detected by cameras as the have a far greater sensitivity to light than our eyes. To the visual observer the comet would appear like a white smudge against the black sk . The green colour is caused by the gas diatomic carbon, which is very abundant in comets, and glows green when it is subjected to increasing charged electrical particles from the Sun, known as the Solar Wind. It is this 'wind' that also causes the comet to form a tail. This comet was last in the vicinity of the Sun some 17,000 years ago. That's all for this month, do try to get out and gaze up, especially as we enter into BBQ season! Until next month, Clear Skies! Neil Norman FRAS Any questions or queries - neilnorman03@gmail.com

A 1930s saloon which has been in the same family for more than 80 years will be among exhibits at Newton Green Golf Club’s first vintage vehicle show. The event is being staged on Sunday, August 6, to mark the 110th anniversary of the club, and as a special curtain up for the annual Jonathan Lambert Festival of Golf. Members, relatives and friends are invited to provide exhibits during an afternoon that will feature cream teas and a traditional jazz band. Golfer Mick Mills who, with his wife Marilyn, have a Vauxhall 12 DY5B, originally bought new by her father’s cousin at Halstead in 1934, will be showing it at the event. In the 1950s, the black, four-seater passed for £40 to Marilyn’s father Alan Gentry, of Assington. He used it for many years while working as a lumber jack, and kept it going with spare parts from another old Vauxhall he bought for a fiver. Eventually, the car was abandoned and left to rust in Mr Gentry’s back garden. The engine was removed, put on blocks outside and started up each week. Twenty years ago, after his son carried out part restoration with a half-completed paint-job, he passed the vehicle to Marilyn and Mick. They found a north Essex mechanic who had worked on pre-war Vauxhall cars. He undertook a two-year restoration. A couple, who had been made redundant at an upholstery firm, took on re-fitting the leather interior. Marilyn recalls, “When my father, who is no longer with us, saw the restored car he had tears in his eyes. In the 1930s Vauxhall 12s were called a ‘farmer’s car’, because you had to have a bit of money to afford one. We still have the original log book, and a service manual covering the model from the thirties right through into the forties. We regard the car as a real family heirloom. “After restoring the vehicle we became members of a Vauxhall enthusiasts club for a time, and we have used the car to provide transport for a number of family weddings and other celebrations. Mick takes it out for a spin every three or four weeks to keep it going.”

01473 824315 07850 630389 Stoke by Nayland travelled to a windswept Burnham on Crouch to play the first round of the 2017 Jubilee Cup. In the Jubilee Cup the teams are comprised of 12 players; of which 6 will be in the handicap range 12- 16 and 6 in the handicap range 17 - 24. Matches are played in a matchplay format and consist of 6 single games, played off scratch, between players of the first group and 3 Four Ball Better Ball games played between players of the second group. Teams compete, initially, in leagues before reaching the knockout stages. Stoke ended the singles with five wins and a half point before going on to clinch victory with two wins in the paired format. This was a very pleasing win for Captain Richard Bland, especially playing away from home and in cold and windy conditions on an exposed course.

Emphatic Win for Stoke by Nayland Seniors

Stoke by Nayland started their 2017 Essex Seniors Championship campaign with an emphatic 10.5 – 0.5 win at home against The Notleys. New Essex Golf Union rules for this competition meant that players had to go out in handicap order. On this occasion it meant that all of the Stoke team had to give shots to their opponents with the exception of Steve Tree in the last match who neither gave, nor received shots. The match was played in cool, blustery conditions on the Constable course which had become very firm due to the lack of any recent meaningful rain. Richard Cross gave the home team a good start, winning his match 3 &2 and this was followed by the only halved match, the remaining nine games all going to the home side. Results of note were an 8 & 6 victory for Steve Tree over visiting Captain Mike James and a 6 & 5 win for Mike Moore. Despite the margin of the victory, all matches were played in an excellent spirit and visiting Captain, Mike James, congratulated Stoke on the victory and wished them well in the next round. Stoke Team: Richard Cross, John Smith, Andy Higginson, Trevor Samways, Allan Smith, Graham Vandervord, Tony Carman, Reg Reid, Paul Sandfield, Mike Moore, Steve Tree.
