Village Edition

On Sunday, March 12th, Hadleigh RFC will host The Hadleigh TAG 2017. Building on the success of previous year’s events we will be welcoming up to 400 players in the U-7 and U-8 age groups from clubs across the Eastern Counties. Clubs already committed to attend include, Ipswich, Woodbridge, Ipswich YM, Colchester, Bury St Edmunds, Chelmsford, Bishops Stortford, Witham, Sudbury, Stowmarket, Felixstowe, Braintree, Mistley, Harwich, Brightlingsea and of course our own Hadleigh Baa-Baa’s. TAG Rugby is a form of non-contact rugby open to all ages but which is specifically used for the development of the sport for “Mini’s”, the U-7 and U-8 age groups. TAG Rugby allows the young players to practice their technical skills, to experience the passion of playing Rugby and to develop a love for both the rules and the spirit of the game which will last a lifetime. With this in mind this year teams will be presented with awards based on the RFU’s core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship as well as separate awards based on “Touchline Etiquette” and Support! Building on the legacy of previous Hadleigh TAG festivals, our “In-toucH Rugby for Schools” programme and the dedication of clubs, coaches, players and parents throughout the region The Hadleigh TAG 2017 is a superb opportunity for girls and boys to come along to see the game for themselves. In 2016 with 330 players from 16 clubs attending, The Hadleigh TAG 2016 was confirmed as the largest tournament of its kind in the British Isles; this year we aim to do even better! Kick Off: 10.00am Sunday March 12th at Hadleigh RUFC, Layham Road Sports Ground, Hadleigh IP7 5NE For further information please contact: Mick Collins Hadleigh RFC Fixtures Secretary 07805 493246 fixtures@hadleighrfc.co.uk

A number of patients will be aware of the Patient Participation Group which has existed for some time. The working of the PPG has recently been reviewed and it has now changed from being a virtual group largely communicating by e-mail to a face to face group that meets formally every two months at the Hadleigh Health Centre. The purpose of the PPG is to promote co-operation and strengthen communication between the Practice, the patients and the wider community for the benefit of all. There are currently nine members of the Group, and we are keen to increase representation from the under 45 age group in particular. The next meeting is on Tuesday March 28th at Hadleigh and the meeting lasts from 10.00am to 12.00 noon. We are also planning to send out a questionnaire in the near future to find out what you particularly like about the present operation of the practice and to hear any suggestions you may have for improvements. So you can be fully involved in the development of our thinking without necessarily being a member of the formal group. You may also meet members of the PPG in the reception areas in Hadleigh and Boxford in the coming months, so that we can hear your views at first hand. If you are interested in becoming a member of the PPG or in providing feedback to the PPG from time to time , then please contact David Parke, Business Manager (david.parke@nhs.net) or one of the following members of the PPG, who will be pleased to tell you more about the group. We look forward to hearing from you! Whatfield Players - Showtime Returns!

We are planning a follow up to our successful ‘Showtime’ Revue, to take place on 27th and 28th October 2017. We hope to repeat the winning formula of a varied programme of songs, musical numbers and short sketches. Last year this included solos from trumpet, cello and ukulele players, as well as a wide range of show tunes, recitals and comedy sketches. We would love to see some new talent this time around–whether you have performed before or would like to join in for the first time. We will be happy to welcome singers, musicians or actors. You may have your own ideas on what you would like to perform or you may prefer to be guided by us to appear in an item which suits your particular talents. If you would like to be involved, whether as a performer or behind the scenes, we would love to see you at our A.G.M. on Wednesday 21st June, 7.30 p.m. at the Village Hall. If you cannot come on that evening but would like to be involved or you would like more information beforehand please contact our chairperson, Diane Armour: 01473 822000. It would be particularly useful for us if you could let us know in advance if you plan to bring your own performance pieces. We look forward to hopefully seeing some new faces, as well as welcoming back some old ones!

Who knows the story of this lady, celebrating the centenary of her death this year? Many people will have seen her name above the entrance to the A & E unit at Ipswich Hospital, but are they aware what a remarkable woman she was, or even who she was? She was born in London but spent most of her childhood in Suffolk, Leiston, where her father was a successful business man. He had a barley and coal merchanting business at Snape Maltings and moved to Aldeburgh where he built Alde House. But what an amazing daughter he produced – so many firsts to her name. The first woman to pass the exams to become a doctor, opened the first hospital for women in London, first Dean of the London School of Medicine for Women and finally first female mayor in England – Aldeburgh. Through all this she was constantly fighting the Victorian prejudice against women doing anything but bear children and manage the home. Needless to say she was a leading political campaigner for women’s rights. To learn a lot more about our local heroine, come to Raydon Village Hall on 22nd April where Mark Mitchels will give one of his celebrated talks. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson

‘Boule-in...Vive la différence!’

“We’re trying to embrace it all” says Cathy Bullen, proprietor of Bildeston’s now famous French Fêtes “I still can’t quite believe how much our life has changed over the past 5 years! With the business so firmly established the constant turnover of stock means we are spending a significant part of our time in France - but I love this dual life!” she admits “It means we get the best of both; sunlight and blue Provencal skies in January and the thrilling delight of spring bulbs on our return. There’s actually nothing more uplifting than a beautiful English spring - it always makes me want to refresh my home and garden. Luckily I have the perfect excuse for a decorative makeover as our Spring Fair Fête du Printemps means we have so many pieces to fill the barn and garden - my only difficulty is not falling in love with new pieces and wanting to keep them!” The Boule-in’s Fête du Printemps (Saturday 1st - Sunday 9th April: 10 am 5pm daily) is indeed an absolute treasure trove of authentically French furniture, gardenware and collectables, beautiful and stylish, to refresh your home and garden - and with spring in the air why not embrace the change and vive la différence! www.boule-in.co.uk

Scarecrow Trail Weekend Capel St Mary, Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June

I know it seems a long time off but this year's Scarecrow trail will take place over the weekend of 17th and 18th June. If you would like to make a Scarecrow please let me know. If you have never made a Scarecrow, it is very easy and please just remember it is a Scarecrow. One thing to bear in mind is that paper mache does not respond well to rain unless it has been varnished. Anything can be used to stuff your scarecrow, old newspapers, shredding (put into plastic bags or it goes very soggy in the rain) or of course the traditional straw. If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to contact me on either 01473 311102 or email chrismterry@yahoo.co.uk. Even if you are unable to make a Scarecrow please put the date into your diary, invite the family and have a fun family outing and finish at St Mary’s Church for a cup of tea/coffee and delicious homemade cake.

Following the brief article in the HCN last month concerning the completion and arrival of the scale model so perfectly made by David Coe, we have received enormous amounts of interest from the general public and media all of whom want to visit and see this work of art. With this in mind we have decided to have an extra, earlier open day of Sunday March 12th 2017 10am - 4pm. Put this date in your diary. The Mill, gardens and all the commercial units will be open and the model will be on display for all to see. We are hopeful that David Coe may also be available on the day together with Mill Wright Bill Griffiths to enable visitor to discuss the intricacies of both projects. You will be able to see in detail the mechanics and how the Mill Stones operate along with the gearing mechanisms. The engineering of the 1800’s being really quite extraordinary and shows just how clever folk were of that era. As our open day coincides with the completion of our newly built commercial units, we thought it apt to invite the public and give you the opportunity to see some new and diverse retail and commercial business that have joined the expending site at Kersey Mill; it is fair to say there is something for everyone. So do come along to see. Our scheduled plan to restore the Mill’s Hurst Frame is gathering speed; we are currently taking detailed measurements and drawings whilst sourcing materials for the project. Interest is building for the much anticipated “Dive It Day” (April 23rd) we are hoping for a fine dry day and are expecting a large number of classic and vintage vehicles. If you own such a vehicle do please dust it off and bring it along. Last year’s event saw a wonderful display of cars, some valued at mind blowing figures in excess of £8m. We saw some that some of us remembered driving with great fondness, in our younger days. We are in need of Marshalls for this event on April 23rd. If you are able to help please do give us a call on 01473 829317 or email? Similarly if you are intending on bringing your pride and joy do please let us know by email via the website www.kerseymill.co.uk or phone 01473 829317. Alternatively take a look on our facebook page ‘Drive It Day 2017 Kersey Mill’. The general public are welcome to come along enjoy the attractions whilst admiring some fantastic machinary from those bygone years. Free admission. Small charge for Parking with all proceeds to the mill restoration fund. Open 10am to 4pm. We look forward to seeing you.

Boxford Drama Group

They’re back for a third outing at Boxford Village Hall!! After the success of their last two hilarious productions – The Haunted Through Lounge and Recessed Dining Nook at Farndale Castle and Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery - the ladies are serving up Chase Me Up Farndale Avenue, S’il Vous Plait, a deliciously funny French farce set in a Paris apartment. However, right from the outset it appears that the Ladies from the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society are up against it, as one of the cast has walked out over an altercation concerning a packet of biscuits! Luckily Minnie, usually the Wardrobe Mistress, has kindly stepped in to fill the role – what could possibly go wrong?? Suffice it to say mayhem and chaos ensues amongst the rest of the cast who are already struggling with multiple roles, questionable foreign accents, falling scenery and missing props. If you’re up for a hilarious evening of utter pandemonium and total confusion then don’t miss this delightfully daft and ludicrously absurd play. It’s just silly! Boxford Drama Group presents the hilarious comedy Chase Me Up Farndale Avenue, S’il Vous Plait written by David McGillivray & Walter Zerlin Jnr, at Boxford Village Hall on 30th, 31st March and 1st April 2017. Tickets are available from Boxford Post Office

Thankyou

Xanthe, Hugo and Jess would like to thank the wonderful Layham Playgroup team; Michelle Elmer, Liz Chisnall and Jenna Lacchin, for the fantastic Chocolate Bingo night that they arranged to raise money for Xanthe. It was a great afternoon's entertainment, and the £405 that was raised has brought Xanthe a treadmill so she can practise her walking as she recovers from PERCs and hamstring surgery, that she had in America last year. We are so grateful to them for thinking of Xanthe, and for all their hard work. Thank you also to all the families who came along and supported the event.

GSOLICITORS IBBONS Howard at Galle Face Hotel Sri Lanka Hello to my readers near and far away. I had not left the Country last year and the opportunity arose for me to see a friend for a week in Sri Lanka during the middle of January. It was some 6,500 miles to travel but I thought that it would be great to have some time away. There is nothing like an Asian country for a hub-bub of activity and an air of mystique and particularly as what used to be Ceylon is the teardrop of India. As always, I called upon Martin of Voyager Travel in Hadleigh (Tel. 07931 418499) to deliver me to Heathrow Airport and return me home which he did with his usual efficiency, care and attention. It was a very sedate service compared to the eventful journeys that I took by tuk tuk in Sri Lanka. My chauffeur Frank and his wife Maria, my housekeeper looked after the Gibbons’ residence. Frank had to prune his wisteria and treat the blossom on his peaches. My father did his National Service at Negombo in Sri Lanka in the early 1950s and so it had great meaning to return albeit that I had been back some years ago when a ship stopped there. I spent part of my time at Berjaya near Mount Lavinia and enjoyed the lovely beach, warm seas and the pool of my hotel. I then took a very old steam train for three hours to Kandy which is in the centre of Sri Lanka where there is a large lake and surrounded by mountains. Kandy is famous for The Temple of the Tooth. I stayed at Greenwoods which is a small hotel with clean but plain amenities. The proprietor Kusum was so kindly and looked after us very well. I had wonderful breakfasts which included squeezed mangos, papaya fruit and coconut pancakes with honey drawn from the sap of a tree. I had hoppers which are like a crisp pancake made from an egg white that is run round a very hot pan. One can either put a fried egg in the middle or have with bananas and honey. The picture shows me at the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo. The hotel overlooks the Indian Ocean and being founded in 1864 is the oldest hotel of its type East of Suez. It was very grand and is said to be one of the 1000 places to see whilst one is on this earth. A bottle of bubbly for the best caption for my look of surprise - let your imagination run wild. After some ten years of excellent service, my Secretary Janet Harrop has decided to make a move. If you know of anyone that would like to be considered as my Secretary being one of the most interesting jobs in this part of East Anglia, then do let me know. There is some movement in the property market and so as always please approach us so that we can give you personal service throughout at a reasonable price. Howard Gibbons

An alternative Spring Clean

Spring is upon us; the birds are certainly acting as so and the cats have been fractious for weeks transitioning from their winter slovenly pace into a more active mode, and what a wonderful time of year it is - when all things seem possible - like The Spring Clean. It is a curious phenomenon; the desire that seems to permeate many of us to attack cupboards, wardrobes and all manner of other hoarding receptacles when we feel the seasons have truly changed, and I am not impervious to this pull. Every year I have good intentions of reducing the amount of stuff that seems to creep in and multiply, almost of its own accord I sometimes feel, and to turn our home into a clutter-free, spacious place with minimal chattels. I have visions of me taking bags full to bursting to the charity shops - of which my nearest town of Hadleigh has several excellent charity and thrift shops and will resist the urge to return having bought nearly as much as I have donated. But, it is also the time of year when the garden beckons, a time to finally get out after the long winter months and start unearthing the new life that is budding and to set upon the brambles, weeds and other such nuisances that seem to grow faster than should be possible. So, I weigh up the options: do I tackle the jobs indoors and start digging into the dark recesses of an overstuffed cupboard or do I don my gardening clothes and head outside to fill my lungs with fresh air and get my hands and feet amongst the earth? To be honest anyone who knows me knows that this is not actually a question but rather a foregone conclusion; the cupboards can wait (I’m sure that must be a winter job anyway – perhaps I’ll do it in the autumn), but the garden waits for no-one. The good intentions are not so much set aside but perhaps just readjusted a little as I make a cup of tea, pull on my wellies and head outside for an alternative Spring clean. I have written a poem about the moment of heading into the garden in Spring which you can read on my website: www.jenny-may.com

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers

For our February walk at Edwardstone we had an excellent turnout at 21 walkers for the 7.5 mile route. The weather was kind and the ground was pleasantly dry for this time of the year. At the end of the walk a number of us stopped off for real ale and a bite to eat at the White Horse. March’s walk will start and finish in Hadleigh and will take in the new boardwalk off the Railway walk heading towards Pond Hall Farm. Many thanks to Suffolk County Council – the boggy patch is now passable. Our route is again about 7.5 miles and takes in the Railway Walk, Pond Hall Business Park, Cobbold’s Farm, Ram’s Farm, Coronation Cottages, Shooting Box then either Aldham Hall or Aldham Common monument and back to Hadleigh. As usual, we will meet as St Mary’s School Car Park at 0930 on Saturday the 18th March. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at this time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 0785 895 5678

Fidelis Activity News

Lunch Bunch:- Strange as it sounds, the last lunch bunch venue, The Mermaid, Ipswich, was chosen not only for its food but also its flexibility and easy parking. No booking or pre-ordering is necessary at this road side establishment so if diners couldn’t face the inclement weather no one would be inconvenienced. In reality this wasn’t an issue and most of the half a dozen hungry members took advantage of the extensive carvery with all the trimmings. The rest chose from the menu with equal success. An added bonus was the 2 meals for £10.00 winter offer. There are other positive considerations; small portions, if preferred, special meal deals for children, an enormous play corner for mini diners and plenty of space for wheelchair users. The pub was busy but not noisy with minimal waiting time as visitors place their own orders. Pleasant staff without exception who didn’t pressure the ladies to leave giving them the opportunity to catch up on local and national news and events. A most enjoyable, sociable afternoon. The Fat Bird and the Boat:- Who would sign up for a trip round the world in a racing yacht with no sailing experience or creature comforts on board? Amazingly Bridget Keevil, the owner of Travel Stop, did just that in 2016. However, there was method in her madness as Bridget hoped this would raise money for her chosen charity, ABTA Lifeline. Fidelis members and their visitors were fortunate to spend an evening with this now accomplished yachtswomen and hear all about her incredible experiences on the high seas. In spite of sustaining several injuries and being forced to break her journey Bridget did manage to get back on board for the ship's memorable return to London. After this hair raising and often soggy journey Bridget passed her target and raised over £5,000 for her nominated good cause. The Bridget with her sailing talk left her audience amazed and staggered at ‘foulies’ Bridget's courage and stamina to survive such a hazardous journey. Her blog gives an account of her memorable journey https://thefatbirdandtheboat.wordpress.com/. The green buckets collection that evening, raised £43 for her current charity, East Anglian Air Ambulance. JD

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk For all the media furore concerning Donald Trump's presidency, there has to date been relatively little formal Parliamentary debate about the new occupant of the White House - but then we have had Brexit to contend with. That will change as, at the time of writing, the Commons prepares to debate whether to roll out the red carpet for Mr Trump. The debate arises as a result of a petition signed by almost 2m people arguing that President Trump should not be granted a 'state' visit to the UK. Such debates are heavily subscribed but if I am called to speak I will argue that such a gesture would not be in our national interest. It seems to me that foreign policy at its best consists of calm day to day diplomacy in the background, driven by clear long-term strategic thinking. It is not best suited to gesture politics and knee-jerk reactions. We may not like Donald Trump's personality. His bravado is not exactly statesmanlike and some of his utterances demean his office and the nation he represents. Nevertheless, these are extremely delicate times in global affairs. The new US President is seemingly ambiguous about the importance of NATO, an alliance that has kept the peace for decades and avoided the extraordinary bloodshed of world war two being repeated - hitherto. And we have a need to look for strong alliances with major nations as we prepare to leave the EU. Above all, we face the threat of an unpredictable and aggressive Russia, buzzing our air space with nuclear capable Bear bombers. In my view, there is only one winner if we pull the red carpet from under Trump's feet - Vladimir Putin. The Russian leader is desperate to see a divided West and it would be all smiles in the Kremlin if the UK was to fall out with Trump in public. We should be keeping as close to the new White House administration as possible, not to endorse everything it does, but to try and influence its future policy. That is surely where our national interest lies.

Why making a Will is vital for parents

A reluctance to talk about death is understandable - it’s the ultimate eventuality many of us spend our lives trying to ignore. But failing to properly prepare for the future by making a Will can leave those we care the most about facing unnecessary pressures at an emotionally fraught time. This is particularly so for mums and dads with young children – yet, according to one recent report, only one in seven parents has a Will detailing who should take care of their offspring. Making a Will allows you to appoint guardians of your choice – without one, the authorities will take on that responsibility meaning you have no formal say over who looks after your children. In extreme situations, that could mean that an unmarried partner is denied guardianship even though he or she is the natural parent. A Will also gives you the chance to set up a trust for your children’s inheritance. Doing so provides you with some control over your money once you pass away, perhaps laying down certain terms to help protect assets from youthful irresponsibility. Without a Will, your next of kin may face delays in gaining access to your assets, meaning they could have to pay for funeral expenses themselves. There is also the possibility that they would have to pay inheritance tax before receiving any of the funds you had intended to leave them, a problem that often leads to financial hardship and even debt. We might not like the idea, but the reality is that it is never too early to be thinking of making a Will. And once you recognise that the process is an unavoidable part of life planning, it becomes less of an emotional task and more of a practical exercise. How can Gotelee help? With an office based in the heart of Hadleigh, we can meet with you at a convenient time to guide you through the process of making a Will to ensure all of your wishes are carried out after your death. Call into our office at 6 Church Street, call us on 01473 822102 or email info-hadleigh@gotelee.co.uk to make an appointment.

Local home improvement firm accepted into elite group of window, door and conservatory installers

Local window and conservatory installation company SEH BAC has become the only firm in the region to be accepted into the elite Master Window and Conservatory Installers Association (MWCIA), an organisation made up of the best window, door and conservatory companies in the UK. The MWCIA seeks to make it easier for homeowners to find reputable, experienced installers and avoid rogue traders. To join, firms have to meet strict entry standards, demonstrating they not SEH BAC managing director John only provide outstanding Savage (left) with Don Waterworth installation work, but also (right), founder of the MWCIA. exceptional customer service. The MWCIA scheme was founded by respected chartered building engineer and surveyor Don Waterworth, known for frequent appearances on consumer rights programmes ‘Don’t Get Done Get Dom’ and ‘Cowboy Builders’, and his work with TV personality Dom Littlewood. Don commented: “Over years working on television, and decades working in private practice, I’ve come across hundreds of dodgy, unscrupulous home improvement companies. That’s why I set up the MWCIA. When you hire an MWCIA member to carry out work on your property, they’ll provide you with a Customer Care promise, that tells you everything they’ll do to look after you and your property throughout the course of the installation. Every installer who works on your project will be a registered master window installer, and will have a lanyard and badge to prove it – and you can rest easy in the knowledge that all work will be completed to the highest of standards. “I’ve been hugely impressed with SEH BAC, and its hard work, professionalism, and commitment to customer service. I’m delighted to welcome them into the MWCIA - and can highly recommend them to homeowners looking for fantastic installation work throughout the area. SEH BAC is one of the south-east’s biggest and more respected window and conservatory installers, and runs 17 show centres across East Anglia, Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire and Oxford. Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 So Ollie lifted the lid on SESAW life last month? He’s good at that! Every chance he gets, he lifts the lid on the butter dish if Mum forgets to close the cupboard door. You should see him stalk off when he gets caught stretching up to his full height to swipe a pawful of the yellow treat! Talking of treats, the fundraisers are busy preparing a smashing selection of goodies for your delectation at our Easter Fair. (Got that fancy word from a recently donated dictionary!) This eggcellent event will take place at Whatfield Village Hall, 11-2pm on the 1st April – no it’s NOT a joke! Three weeks later we return to the Old School, Long Melford with our Spring Fair, 10-3pm on 23rd April. There will be the usual huge selection of goods plus beautiful flowers and plants from our regular nurseryman. Tables still available at £10 each, booking forms on our website or call 01206 263269. Thank you to all the kind people who have donated craft materials. See if you can pick out your items from the many handmade gifts our clever ladies have created – and please keep them coming. Mum says I must tell you that contrary to rumours, SESAW is open for business as usual. Our helpers are busy looking after the many rescued animals every day so to (almost) coin a well known phrase, tell that to the Volunteers! I just spotted Ollie on his way to the kitchen so I had better follow him. If he’s after the butter again, someone needs to tell Mum, and who better than me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Just 4 years later, she plans to sue the organisation that gave her all this incredible, life changing wealth. She says she is now bored of relentless consumption – it fails to offer genuine happiness; she thought it would make her life 10x better – but it’s 10x worse; no-one understands her isolation. “I have material things but apart from that my life is empty. What is the purpose of my life?”. She’s right – despite what we imagine money will not bring happiness. Interestingly, The Bible does not condemn wealth, but says the grip that it can have on your heart is wrong. A great King in The Bible, Solomon, had everything his heart could desire, with incredible wealth. (Estimated at 2 Trillion in today’s currency!) Yet Solomon agreed with this girl and said “He who loves money will not be satisfied with money” Ecclesiastes 5.10. The richest and wisest man who ever lived agreed with this lady. Does anything satisfy? Yes! Knowing Jesus, God’s Son, He chose to die on a Cross for you personally, so that you can be forgiven, He has a purpose and a plan for your life that transforms everything. John 3.16 tells us this: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” I pray that this young lady and everyone find their worth in Jesus. Christine Hart

St Elizabeth Hospice has launched a brand new dog walking event, Follow My Lead, and they are looking for four-legged friends to sign up. The walk, which takes place on 12 March 2017 at Alton Water, will cost each dog £10 to take part and they can bring their human friends along for free. Nigel Donkin, Community and Volunteer Fundraising Manager at St Elizabeth Hospice, said: “We regularly have dogs popping into the hospice to see their owners so we thought it’s time we organised an event just for them!” The local charity held a competition to find the furry face of this brand new event, with more than 100 pet photos being submitted! The final choice was open to the public, with a poll of the top six on social media, and the winner Oakley, a two and a half year old cocker spaniel, became the star of the event. Oakley will start the walk at 10.30am on Sunday 12 March, followed by all his canine companions, and all dogs who sign up will receive a special doggy bag and ‘Follow my lead’ tag at the end. Mr Donkin added: “This is set to be a fantastic day out for dogs and humans alike, and is a great opportunity to get together with fellow hospice supporters and dog lovers all for a good cause.” If you would like to sign up your dog to the walk, please visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/followmylead, call 01473 723600 or email: fundraising@stelizabethhospice.org.uk

Hadleigh Town KS2 Visit On Wednesday 18 January the pupils from Key Stage 2 took a trip to Hadleigh to look at and view some of the local history. The morning began with a look around St Mary’s Church and a talk about its history, and Haleigh’s connection with the wool trade. Pupils learned about weights, measures, gotch and bells, Rowland Taylor and the use of the church over the ages. Thank you to the wonderful members of the Hadleigh Archive group who helped make this visit possible. Quiz Club Four of our KS2 pupils were selected to represent the school at the area heat of the National Key Stage 2 General Knowledge Quiz Championship 2016-17. The event took place on 24 January. Competition was high with schools from across the county being represented. Our pupils came back so thrilled after coming in third position. Well done to them all! Dodgeball On Monday 16 January, we joined six of the eight feeder primaries to attend the third Primary PE Partnership event of the current academic year. Schools brought teams of twenty pupils ranging from Years 3 to 6. Each school team had five fixtures to play against the other schools in the competition. Within these fixtures they played 3 games. Only fifteen pupils played at any one time and substitutions were made between games to enable mass participation. Bildeston pupils ended in a respectable fifth position. Able Writers Two of our pupils in Eagle class were given the opportunity to join an Able Writers’ Day at Chilton Community Primary School on Wednesday 25 January. The pupils worked with the brilliant science fiction writer Colin Parsons. The children had a super day and both of them came back with a signed copy of the author’s latest book! Swimming Gala Eight of our KS2 pupils wered selected to represent the school in a Swimming Gala held at Hadleigh Swimming Pool. The event took place on Monday 6 February. After some exciting races, our pupils came away with a Bronze award after gaining third place – well done to them! KS1 Science Café On Tuesday 7 February we held our first curiosity café, which was science based. Families joined their children in school for the morning carrying out an assortment of different science activities. If you are considering Bildeston Primary as a school for your child, we would welcome a visit. Please phone the office on the number below. We would love to meet you. Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics

Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics entered gymnasts in their first ever county Suffolk grades competition at Pipers vale gymnastics club on Sunday 19th February. There were over 200 gymnasts competing in 8 levels. We entered 12 gymnasts in total: Level 1: Nicole Peddelty, Freya Clark, Phoebe Emsden, Imogen Hek, Ellie Donoghue, Ellie Robertson, Esme Marsh. All gymnasts passed and 6 gymnasts received pass with distinction. Level 3: Darcy Emsden, Charlotte Graham, Emily Evans, Alice Reily, Gracie Ward. All gymnasts passed and 2 received pass with distinction.

We are thrilled with their results and the hard work and commitment from the gymnasts and their coaches have paid off. Hadleigh Stars Gymnastics is rapidly growing and it's now fantastic that we have reached the standard to compete with other larger clubs within Suffolk and we look forward to competing in more competitions later in the year.

French’s Care Haven and Care Farm

We would like to give our readers an up-date on Smuggler the starving pony we took in that could barely walk through malnutrition. On top of the malnutrition Smuggler has cushings which is caused by progressive nerve degeneration in an area of the brain called the hypothalamus, leading to a reduction in the neurotransmitter substance called dopamine. Dopamine is important for controlling part of the pituitary gland. Cushings cannot be cured but can be treated or helped through good care and management. Lots of horses in older life seem to develop this, especially ponies, other animals including dogs can also suffer with this problem. When Cushings develops it can cause recurrent infections and delayed wound healing due to suppression of the immune system, increase urination and visually the animal grows a long curly coat that fails to shed. Another problem with cushings is the animal cannot regulate their own body temperature, so you need to monitor this as some animals can always feel cold or others sweat easily. Smuggler is one that feels the cold and at this time of year he has two thick rugs on. Smugs as we call him is around 30 years old and has lost his grinding teeth for eating grass and hay. Most had thought he had no chance without these teeth and the condition he was in but with all the hard work and specialist feeds this winter he has gained a good body weight and is doing very well indeed. It has not been an easy or cheap road to get this result. When we arrive at the farm first thing in the morning until when we put the animals to bed at the end of the day, smugs has bowls of feed with veteran chaff and veteran weight gain mix along with sugar beet and fast fibre and shaving peels of a carrot or two as a special treat. Smugs has the run of part of the farm with a field shelter next to the his friend Lyttons stable, smugs is so funny he has a clock timer in his head because dead on time he comes to the gate and whinnies for his next feed, we make up around 8 buckets at a time so we don’t keep the little man waiting. The enclosed picture was taken towards the end of summer, when his weight and condition was on the up, he has now gained more weight and has rounded off quite nicely bless him, he is a happy, sweet, cheeky little chap as you can see in the photo. If you would like to sponsor smuggler please get in contact and we can arrange for you to visit and say hello to smuggler and give him one of his many feeds. French's are looking for help in every shape and form, from sponsorship to hands on, so if you have any spare time and would like to become more involved with us in the work we do, please give Jann a call. Bunting, Bunting and More Bunting

For Quality & Personal Service FENSA from Start to Finish

Once a month, strenuous physical activity is not the only thing taking place at the Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Centre. In the largest downstairs room you can find a team of ladies beavering away, cutting and sewing, to produce lengths of colourful bunting. Much of the attractive floral material has come from the town’s charity shops. It’s a lively, busy two hours with time to put the world to rights and the odd coffee while working. Happily, the bunting project is well on schedule and the Hadleigh Festival of Gardening and Art 2017 team are confident that there will be sufficient to adorn the entire High Street for the duration of the summer. If you would like to be part of this community activity a warm welcome awaits you on Sunday March 19th from 10 – 12 noon. No craft experience necessary. Floral material always welcome too. FOR ALL YOUR SKIP HIRE NEEDS

When is the development going to stop? It seems as if just about every owner of a strip of land outside a Suffolk village is applying for planning permission, and many of them are being approved. Such is Babergh District Council’s apparent haste to approve executive houses that it has landed itself in court, at least twice. East Bergholt Parish Council has just won its judicial review against Babergh, and Bildeston Parish Council is waiting for its review. The argument made by the Government, and by Babergh’s ruling Conservative councillors, is that these houses are “needed”. But are they really? Page 28 of the Government’s own latest Housing Survey – the Housing Stock Report – shows that only three in a hundred households in the UK live in overcrowded conditions. So we don’t have a shortage of floor space in Britain. We have a temporary misallocation of floor space: lots of people have too much, while others can’t find any. The problem is not a lack of large executive homes, it is a lack of suitable homes for both the young and old. This need used to be provided by council houses. But the Government is forcing councils to sell off these at a discount to private tenants and has capped council rents, so councils can’t afford to build any more. Meantime in 2012, the Government ripped up the planning controls for private developers so that they can build for the first time on the edges of villages. But profitable identikit three, four or five bedroom properties on green fields - are not going to solve the problem. What is needed are: a) Smaller and genuinely affordable, social properties built around the towns and cities where most of the jobs and public transport are. b) Smaller properties for older people, enabling them to downsize and stay within their existing communities, just as Lavenham Land Trust is aiming to do. Lavenham wants to build with a far higher standard of insulation than private developers provide, ensuring the homes are affordable for their occupants in the long term. The new planning rules in 2012 were fiercely opposed by both the Green Party and the Council for the Preservation of Rural England but not by Conservative, Labour or LibDem politicians. The new, developer-friendly regime has been greeted with great enthusiasm by most of the Conservative councillors that control Babergh. Two who disagreed, the representatives of East Bergholt, left their group on the council in disgust. Councillor John Hinton told the press: “I haven’t fallen out with the Conservative Party…The Conservative Group on the council has fallen out with the public.” I agree. Our part of Suffolk really needs an independent voice. As a member of the Green Party I will always try to tell it how it is for residents, not how the Government, or Babergh or Suffolk County Council want it to be. That’s why I am standing for election on May 4. Robert Lindsay, Green Party candidate for Cosford in the county council elections. If you have any questions or would like to help me with leaflets etc, please contact me on lindsay.robert@hotmail.co.uk or 01449 741959.

News from Kersey CEVC Primary School

Squirrels Squirrel class have been learning all about dinosaurs this half term. The children have enjoyed reading lots of different non-fiction books and writing their own facts that they have found. We also celebrated Chinese New Year by cooking spring rolls, acting out the story of 'The Great Race' and creating our own collage roosters. Hedgehogs Hedgehogs have had a busy start the the Spring term. Linking in with our topic of "Ice Age" we have been recording the weather each day and discussing how it is different in different parts of the world. We have also been thinking about the different seasons. Last week we were very excited to have a sprinkling of snow. We enjoyed building snowmen, throwing snow balls and making snowy footprints. We have been reading some Winnie-the-Pooh stories over the past few weeks, learning about the different characters and their personailities. On Monday we had a Winnie-the-Pooh day where we thought about how we could be more like some of the characters such as being resilient, hardworking and friendly. Badgers Badgers class this term have been learning all about the gruesome punishments from the Tudor times as well as other time periods. We created our own mock court room and faced a jury of our own peers. Unfortunately not many of survived the guilty verdict! Due to our excellent orienteering skills we found out who the thief was in our class! The letters of their name were spelt out across the school and church area for us to find. After that we created wanted posters to make sure the person was caught! We are also looking forward to our Safer Internet Day where we will be thinking about how we can make the internet an even better tool to use, as well as making it safer. Owls Owls class have been busy learning about the Ancient Mayans, finding out how they believed they were created. We will be writing our own version of Popol Vuh, the Mayan creation story. In Science, we are learning about the Earth, Sun and Moon. We have created models to show rotation and revolution in the Earth, Sun and Moon system. In Maths, we have recapped some of our learning from the Autumn term and we will soon be moving on to focus on statistics. In PE, we are learning hockey skills, so that we can adapt the game and hold our own tournament based on hockey and the Ancient Mayan game of pok t' pok. For more information about Kersey School or to arrange a visit please ring 01473 823397, email: admin@kersey.suffolk.sch.uk or visit our website: www.kersey.suffolk.sch.uk

Well we have a new member of the herd! He is called Bryn, and arrived on the yard in late January. Lyn is careful about settling in new boys; to begin with he just got to know the place and see the other horses (not me and Babs of course) working. By the time you read this he should be fully integrated to the team, and working as hard as the rest of us. He is all clipped out, so in that freezing weather he had to live in. I’m hoping to catch a glimpse of his coat when he grows it back in because its hard to say what colour he is. You look at the pictures and see if you can guess! The Quiz Night was a sell out success last month, I’m told, and raised £1500 towards the running costs of the Centre. Our amazing team of fund raisers has another treat coming up on April 29th: ‘Horse Racing with a Difference” Out of the same stable as last year’s frog racing, it should be a good laugh, so hurry, order your tickets from Di Godfrey on 01473 658552 so you don’t miss out on this event. One of the things Babs and I don’t bother the volunteers with can be seen in the barrow below. The rest of the herd (ten live horses and ponies remember) is very productive. We have a wonderful muckheap in the yard, which keen gardeners are free to raid, but getting the piles of you-know-what to it requires human intervention. Lyn asked me to mention this as one of the team of wonderful poo pickers has recently retired and we would like to invite any fit, outdoor loving, possibly retired, men who would like to help us maintain our land well to join us! We are mechanised, its not all done by shovel and skip, and the rota of help is not onerous. Like all charitable establishments we need more new faces to join us and keep things ticking over for this good cause. Enjoy the gradual arrival of Spring my friends, and lets hope for lots of good riding and many fine achievements for our clients before the Easter holidays kick in. On site there will be face painters, children activities and a stall selling hot drinks, bacon rolls and cakes so this is a great event to bring the whole family along. All proceeds benefit the local Pre-School and Full details for the event, including online entry, can be found at www.chadacrechallenge.co.uk

So Why Are You Overweight?

It’s always easy to find an excuse for gaining weight - “it’s my hormones/metabolism” or even “my clothes have shrunk”! Very occasionally it can be caused by an imbalance of hormones but for the vast majority of us it’s simple – we eat too much of the wrong things and do less exercise than we should. Our modern lifestyle is partly to blame – mostly we’re too busy to walk even the shortest distance so we jump in the car instead, and we eat anything that’s quick and readily available. All too often that means high fat, high carbohydrate and high calorie foods. These are usually highly processed and have poor nutritional values so we could actually end up malnourished!!! This in turn can create health issues which could affect us for years to come! Sometimes it creeps up on us and we suddenly realise we’ve gained two, three stone or more. We may have been through a stressful period in our lives or we’ve just been kidding ourselves it’s not happening and ignore it hoping it’ll go away by itself. Feeling out of control can mean we find the idea of losing excess weight too daunting. Cambridge Weight Plan can help you overcome this. Cambridge Weight Plan provides 100% nutrition (3 products a day*) enabling you to lose that excess weight quickly and healthily. It then teaches you how to eat so that you remain in control for long-term maintenance. Average loss is a stone a month**. Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support. Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has 8 years’ experience, will provide individual support and motivation during your weight loss journey, so for help with your weight problem, contact her today on 01449 737113 / 07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp. For more information, go to www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL You can get the body you want, and like thousands of others you could soon be saying ”I wish I’d found Cambridge sooner!”

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club

Monday February 13th After a week of grey skies and freezing temperatures the sun shone from a cloudless sky for the club's first outing of the year. We travelled to Anglesey Abbey gardens near Cambridge to see the early spring bulbs. The gardens were very busy with families making the most of the good weather in half term week, but there was plenty of room for everyone, and plenty to see. As well as snowdrops with their wide variety of sizes and markings, each a little gem, there were also the winter stems of cornus in greens, reds and yellows, glowing in the sunshine. The winter aconites were just beginning to show and there was even a small clump of early daffodils in flower in a sheltered sunny spot. This is also the best time of year to appreciate the silver birches with their shining white bark, a must for the keen photographer and there were plenty there that day! A visit to a garden in winter is something of a new venture for the club and all agreed with so much to see even in February it was a most enjoyable day. Our next meeting – Monday March 13th The March meeting is our AGM, and during the evening we continue with the theme of spring bulbs, as club member John Wild will be sharing his expertise on the subject of daffodils, and, for the spring season, the competition is 'a bowl of crocus'. We are always happy to welcome new members to the club. We meet in Hadleigh town hall at 7.30pm. The cost is £3 for visitors and £1 for members including refreshments. Andy Leeder, Chairman

Huge thanks to Sarah and Toby Ambrose who have raised so much money for our daughter, Xanthe, over the last 4 months. We are so grateful for Sarah's brilliance, bravery and madness in shaving her hair off on Christmas Eve, 2016, and raising over £3,500. This will help Xanthe to pay for 3 months worth of 1:1 Physiotherapy which she needs 4 times a week after her surgery in October last year. We are so grateful to all the customers and people who donated money at The Men's Room, your generosity has been incredible.

Down to Earth ...with Dave How time flies. A year has gone since I started doing this little article. Sometimes it is a bit of a struggle to find items that I think will be of interest, other times there is not enough room to include all of the things that are going on. With the approach of a busy springtime the latter may well be the case. We started off the year by taking part in the annual garden bird survey organised by the RSPB. This is the first time we have done this and it involves listing all the birds that visit your garden in a given hour on a specific day in January. Care must be taken not to list the same bird twice. Our bird spotting was of the fairly common types, such as blackbirds, starlings, sparrows, great tits, bluetits, robins, magpies, wood pigeons and collared dove. Nothing very exciting there, until, at the last minute a large adult grey heron landed on the houseroof opposite, sat long enough for me to get a reasonable photo and then, with enormous flapping wings flew off towards the river Brett, no doubt in search of lunch. Whilst strictly speaking it was not in our garden, I thought it was near enough to be included. The nature of the survey does not include occasional visitors which, in our case, would include a sparrowhawk who sits on the bird feeder waiting for a sparrow or even a dove. I have also managed to get a very good photo of this very striking bird. If you have a pond and herons are a nuisance stealing your prize fish, one of the best deterrents are several trip wires set around the pond up to a couple of feet off the ground. The heron likes to land a little way from the pond on a clear area and then walk to the pond edge. A trip wire should upset them. We get a lot of pleasure watching the birds having a bath in the various bird baths around the garden. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, a large plant saucer will do, just so long as it's topped up every day with clean water and kept free of ice when it is very cold. We have one favourite female blackbird who really gives herself a proper bath most days, it makes you feel quite cold the way she performs. Our season of garden visits has started with a coach trip to Anglesey Abbey, mainly to see the snowdrops. As we have found in the past the snowdrops on sale were very expensive, with some as dear as twenty pounds for a single plant in a pot. We managed to resist these but did buy a small bag of snowdrop bulbs sold 'in the green', that means bare bulbs with flowers on, and also a dwarf hellebore as a memento. If the weather stays as it is it will soon be all go on the allotment. Do not be in too much of a hurry to get started though, as the soil is still very cold. That's all for this time, Dave

At the recent AGM outgoing ladies captain, Sally Cade, thanked her committee and members for all their support over the club’s 110th year. She enjoyed being involved in the decisions on the refurbishment of the clubhouse and reported that the ladies section raised just over £1,100 for the club captains’ charity, the Kernos Centre. Incoming captain, Rebecca Evans said the big drive would be to raise money needed to alter the ladies changing room. The ladies were in the forefront of the running of the club as a whole and were delighted that Dora George had been asked to become a vice president. The club captains’ charity for the year would be the Jude Brady Foundation whose aim is to raise awareness of stillbirth and neonatal deaths in the UK. Officers: Captain, Rebecca Evans; Vice-captain, Lizzie Johnson; Secretary, Di Cunningham; Treasurer, Sue Lockwood Trophies were awarded for 2016 with Sue Lockwood named Lady Golfer of the Year and also won the England Golf medal for the best four medal rounds throughout the year.

Red Romantic Valentine’s Day at Newton Green

There was a sea of red when Rebecca Evans made a St Valentine’s Day captain’s drive-in appearance at Newton Green Golf Club. Also present to give a romantic send-off to her year in office was husband Gareth, who is due to become the club’s men’s captain in the near future. It will be the first time in the 110 year history of the club that a husband and wife will hold the captaincies in the same year. A third member of the family, Boris the dog - sporting a red scarf - was also present for Rebecca’s drive-off. Rebecca, with a handicap of 18, represents Suffolk Women on England Golf, and also runs marathons and other longdistance events. Her drive-off performance also set a new record for women’s golf at the club, as she hit her shot out-of-bounds! However, the competition to predict the length of her drive did not go unrewarded. Vice-captain Lizzie Johnson had predicted the new captain’s wayward shot and took the prize for guessing the distance of Rebecca’s drive. Before teeing off, the new captain watched retiring captain Sally Cade putt out her season on the 18th hole.
