Take a once in a lifetime challenge!

Village Edition

Take on the challenge of a lifetime in 2017 and cycle from London to Paris to raise funds for St Elizabeth Hospice. The local charity is looking for supporters to take on the 300 mile bike ride from London to Paris between 19 - 24 September 2017, and have already filled a number of the spaces. Joanne Rodger, St Elizabeth Hospice’s events and challenges fundraiser, said: “We are really excited to offer people the chance to cycle from London to Paris this year as part of this group, as it is a great opportunity to complete such a fantastic challenge. “People of all cycling abilities and experiences can take part and everyone who signs up will be supported with their training and fundraising from now until they return from Paris” The local charity is hosting an information evening on Thursday 2 February at the hospice on Foxhall Road, Ipswich, where supporters are invited to attend to find out more about this incredible challenge, and ask any questions they may have. Miss Rodger added: “The money raised from this exhilarating experience will go towards providing care and support to patients and their families wherever it is need, whether at home, in the community or at the hospice.” For more information about the London to Paris Cycle Ride, or to attend the information evening, please contact Joanne Rodger, events and challenges fundraiser at St Elizabeth Hospice on joanne.rodger@stelizabethhospice.org.uk or visit www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/londontoparis

What Could Possibly Go Wrong………..

Long before The Play That Goes Wrong and Peter Pan Goes Wrong in which an amateur dramatic society experiences the horrors of what can go wrong right in front of a live audience, the fictional Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society have been resolutely presenting plays in which the scenery collapses, cues are missed, lines are forgotten and sound effects create illusions the director never imagined. Boxford Drama Group has previously produced two of the side-splitting Farndales, The Haunted Through Lounge and Recessed Dining Nook at Farndale Castle in 2006 and Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society murder Mystery in 2008, both directed by Jane Lindekam who brings back the Farndale Ladies to Boxford Village Hall with Chase Me Up Farndale Avenue, S’il Vous Plait by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jr. This time the Farndale Ladies are attempting a French farce in the style of Boeing Boeing with complicated romantic encounters and no less than four doors for the cast of characters to run in and out of while trying to stick to the complicated script whilst about them props go missing and pieces of the set collapse resulting in an evening of hilarious horrors and cock-ups galore. Boxford Drama Group presents Chase Me Up Farndale Avenu, S’il Vous Plait at the Boxford Village Hall on 30th, 31st March and 1st April. Tickets are £13.00 which includes supper and will be available from the Boxford Post Office from Saturday 25th February 2017.

Porch Project Cheque Presentation

In December the Hadleigh branch of Ipswich Building Society held a Christmas Raffle in aid of the Porch Project, a local charity for young people in the area. Many of the local businesses were very kind and donated some great prizes. A big thank you to our customers for their support which helped us raise £125 for the charity.

Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

I never dreamt I would find myself saying this, but yes, I actually agree with a pronouncement from a Conservative county councillor. Jenny Antill, the councillor for Cosford, said of the county’s failed bid to create a county-wide mayor: “I am unable to escape the impression…that we are guilty of fiddling while Rome burns.” She noted in her blog that while Suffolk’s Conservative administration had been plotting to create an unnecessary new tier of government, the county faced a “dismal highways situation” and a budget deficit. Jenny, who had been councillor in charge of the county’s finances, has now announced that she is standing down as a councillor after four years in the Suffolk Conservative group. It is clear that she is frustrated with the administration of which she was supposed to be a part. What is this “dismal highways situation”? It is nothing to do with a lack of cash. Yes, the county faces an overall budget deficit. But Suffolk’s individual county councillors have each historically been given about £8,000 every year to spend on highways to improve the “quality of life” of their residents. They can use it for anything highways-related: from improvements to badly pot-holed roads to putting in 20mph speed limits, widening pavements or other traffic calming measures. Much of this money has been earmarked over the past few years for projects communities have asked for. But hardly any of it has been actually spent. In fact the 75 councillors across Suffolk are sitting on a combined £1.4 million of unspent “quality of life” money. Jenny herself has a £60,000 cash pile, equivalent to about seven years of her annual quality of life budget, some of it rolled over from her predecessor Jeremy Pembroke. Bildeston has been waiting for four years for the minimal engineering that some village gateways and a flashing sign would require, while Lavenham is still waiting for traffic calming on its narrow medieval Water Street, and Brent Eleigh and Hitcham are both awaiting a flashing speed sign. What is going on? About four years ago, Suffolk’s Conservative leadership, in its ideological enthusiasm for doing “deals” with the private sector, decided to outsource its road maintenance people to the East Anglian engineering company May Gurney. Days after May Gurney signed the contract, it was taken over by construction giant Kier. It seems the county is now unable to exert enough leverage over Kier to get the work done. As a result, thousands of Suffolk citizens are left with pot-holed roads and no solution to the blight of lorries and traffic. No wonder Jenny is going. The Tory hierarchy discourages their members from speaking out about this sorry state of affairs. Luckily, as a member of the Green Party, I am not. This is why I am standing for the Cosford ward Jenny currently represents in the county council elections next May. There seems little doubt the Conservatives will remain in control of the county as whole after May. So we really need an independent Green voice to keep the blues in line. Robert Lindsay, Green Party candidate for Cosford in the county council elections If you have any questions or would like to help me with leaflets etc, please contact me on - lindsay.robert@hotmail.co.uk 01449 741959

‘At the heart of the town’s heritage’

Pause for thought – February 2017

Locked into love - In June 2015, the city of Paris removed forty-five tonnes of padlocks from the railings of the Pont des Arts pedestrian bridge. As a romantic gesture, couples would etch their initials onto a lock, attach it to the railing, click it shut, and throw the key into the River Seine. After this ritual was repeated thousands of times, the bridge could no longer bear the weight of so much “love.” Eventually the city, fearing for the integrity of the bridge, removed an estimated 700,000 “love locks.” The locks were meant to symbolize everlasting love, but human love, sadly does not always last. The closest of friends may offend each other and never resolve their differences. Family members may argue and refuse to forgive. A husband and wife may drift so far apart that they can’t remember why they once decided to marry. Human love can be fickle. But there is one constant and enduring love—the love of God. “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever,” proclaims Psalm 106:1. The promises of the unfailing and everlasting nature of God’s love are found throughout the Bible. And the greatest proof of this love is the death of His Son so that those who put their faith in Him can live eternally. And nothing will ever separate us from His love. This is how Romans 8: 38–39 puts it: ‘For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’ When we truly follow Jesus we are locked into God’s love forever. Ever thought of fostering?

In the UK there are currently a record number of children coming into foster care. Many factors are contributing to this situation: high numbers of families on the breadline, an increase in ill mental health amongst parents and young people, high levels of substance misuse, family breakdowns and a refugee crisis that demands a response. To make matters worse there is a real shortage in foster carers, which means many children aren’t offered the homes they deserve. Of course, many people consider fostering but are put off by things they’ve heard. At EFS we’d like to have an honest conversation about fostering with those who have ever considered it. So, we’ll be holding our next coffee morning at our offices in East Bergholt from 10.30am until 12.30pm on Thursday 2nd March. We’d love to talk to anyone who is interested in fostering and we’ll have some of our carers with us who will always speak honestly and openly about their experiences. For more information or to register your interest, please call us on 01206 299775 or visit www.easternfosteringservices.com

Lunch Bunch. To keep travel to a minimum in the winter months the last lunch bunchers met nearer to home at The King’s Head in town. Two tables of diners thoroughly enjoyed their meal and a relaxed chat over coffee when all had been consumed. Members are looking forward to the second half of the Fidelis year with an interesting programme of speakers, outings and walks for their enjoyment. They are also planning to get involved in the forthcoming Hadleigh Festival of Gardening and Art this year. Some ladies have already participated in the bunting workshops or they are beavering away at home.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk As in many previous years, this winter we have seen huge pressure on our National Health Service. In fact, the Tuesday following Christmas was the busiest day in the history of the NHS. No day since the creation of the NHS in 1948 has seen more people attending its hospitals than that day in December - little wonder then that we heard many stories of staff 'stretched' and struggling to cope. Quite simply, demand was unprecedented. Fortunately, our local health service coped relatively well, though of course many people had significant waits to be seen. In these circumstances one can sympathise very strongly with NHS staff placed under such pressure. I have nothing but the greatest respect for all those who work so hard on our wards and in our surgeries. My mother was a nurse and all four of my children were born on NHS maternity wards, with excellent service each time, particularly in Ipswich hospital. Nevertheless, we face a huge challenge and have to be open and honest about the task ahead. The Government has invested in the frontline and we have 11,000 more doctors and 10,300 more nurses than in May 2010. Yet demand has grown at an even faster rate and I entirely accept that more resources are required, and that means more cash, both for the NHS and social care. The next question is where that funding comes from. Some MPs are calling for a cross-party convention on how we fund the NHS. I welcome the idea in principle but to my mind any such project must surely be prepared to look at every option on the table if we are to build a lasting solution. For example, I believe pharmacies could play a much greater role in building truly integrated local healthcare. At a recent Parliamentary debate we heard how they could take over non-urgent services, relieving pressure on GPs and A&E. Ultimately there is no easy answer. Yet for all the stress and strain of NHS winter peak demand, one positive is that we may finally be moving to the broad, bold debate that could lead to lasting reform.

There was a terrific turn out for January's Committee meeting. 2017 could be a hectic year with plans to develop the Junior Club, survey club members, set up courses for ladies and novice adult riders and possibly run a Gayford Flyer Mk3. Ryan Gooderham and Molly Cutmore attended their first meeting as Junior reps and provided some useful insights into how the Club could support young riders. The new Chairman, Mike Motteram said, "We’re keen to promote the Club and we're offering one item of kit at half-price to all members in 2017." Individual membership is £10 and family membership is £30. In addition, members receive discounts at Sunny Day Cycleworks and The Pedal House. Winter is usually a tough season for cyclists with many resorting to the turbo. However, a hardy bunch of riders have been heading out from Hadleigh on Sunday mornings. Led by Chris Heron, the rides start at 9am from the George and are no faster than 15mph. The destination is Starbucks on the A12. No one is dropped and the emphasis is on chatting rather than racing. It’s always worth checking the Club’s Facebook if the weather looks dubious as the rides may be cancelled. For more information on the Club visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.org or email or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Partridges Staff Raise Funds for the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance

The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance would like to say a big thank you to all of the staff at Partridges. Instead of sending Christmas Cards to colleagues in store they donated what they would have spent on cards and made a generous donation to the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance. Tracey at the HDAA said “this was a wonderful surprise! We received an email from Jean in January telling us what the colleagues had done. We are incredibly grateful. All monies raised for the Alliance go towards making Hadleigh a dementia friendly community.” Jean from Partridges said “This is an idea that was started quite a few years ago and each Christmas we have a bit of a chat as to which local charity we should send the monies raised too. Normally something close to our hearts….” For more information on how to get involved in supporting the HDAA work in working to become a dementia friendly Hadleigh visit the new website at: www.hadleighdementiafriends.co.uk April Cottage, Powney Street, Milden, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 7AL

ALL BIKES WELCOME Bike services available from £45 - book your appointment today!

Hopefully, everyone will now be aware that our walks will now take place on the third Saturday of the month. One slight drawback of this arrangement is that I will be unable to report on the previous month’s walk as copy date is now before the walk takes place. It seems pointless to report on a walk held 2 months previously. Our February walk on the Saturday 18th will start and finish at the Edwardstone White Horse Inn. The 7 mile route will proceed via Parliament Heath, Pitches Mount, Groton Church, Edwardstone Lodge,Edwardstone Church and then via The Grove to the White Horse Inn. By coincidence the White Horse will be running a beer fest on that day so we will have an excuse to sample the wares and enjoy a snack before going home. The landlord is happy for walkers to park in the pub car park and we will leave at 0930 as usual. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at this time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Show your love this Valentines Day

We are getting very excited here at the Flower Shop with a busy time ahead. Not only do we have Valentines Day filling the shop with love and romance but Mother's Day is shortly afterwards on Sunday 26th March. With all this in mind, we have been very busy preparing. This past month we have been looking into and sampling lots of different Red Roses ready for Valentine's Day. There are hundreds of different varieties of roses available to us florists. With different sized heads, shades of colour and amount of petals it's a hard choice to pick the perfect ones, but this year we are confident you will love our long stemmed 'Freedom' Roses with their large head and velvety petals. We are aware red roses are not everyone's cup of tea. Maybe a bouquet of their favourite blooms is going to win their heart instead? Whatever your loved one adores we can create the perfect bouquet for you. We are often asked if we are part of a relay service such as Interflora or Eflorist. The answer to this is no, we are truly independent here at The Flower Shop. However we do send our hand made bouquets with our fresh flowers via courier for you. So if you love our bouquets but your loved one isn't local don't fear, we can still send this for you. We also have some exciting news to share with you - Our flowers are now available at Suffolk Food Hall. The Food Hall is situated on the road to Shotley, underneath the Orwell bridge. If you've never been it's defiantly worth a trip with their huge selection of fresh produce, including fruit and vegetables, meat, on site bakery, gift ware and so, so much more - including our beautiful bunches and bouquets. We will also have a 'pop up' florist here over Valentine's and Mother's weeks with an on site florist making bouquets whilst you wait, just like here at Kersey Mill. Hadleigh U3A

Hadleigh U3A welcomes all members and prospective members to their next meeting at 2.30pm on Monday 13th February 2017 at the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh. The talk will be given by Grant Elliott and is entitled ‘Jazz – 1900 to 1945’.

As you would expect the winter has been tough for us housing and feeding the rescued animals at French’s, with the outside work involved in the care and cleaning it is an enormous task when you have little help and the weather is cold and wet. We have a vacancy for an apprentice to start with us, it is hard work but very rewarding, already we have had two apprentices that have completed their apprenticeship with us and gained a qualification, we are now ready to take our third. If you or anyone you know are interested in the position please contact Jann, we would love to hear from you. This month’s task is to sort out and re-decorate a room we have for the purpose of a teaching and activity space, for new proposed projects to help Suffolk’s vulnerable people and those who need help getting back to work. We are looking for funding for this project if anyone could help? This month we have students at Essex University offering a volunteering day to come along and clear the room ready for us to decorate and furnish, they will also give the Donkeys area an early spring clean, which will make those dear Donkeys smile I am sure! This is such a help to us and we would love other colleges and schools to offer help working with us on projects, we welcome anyone who would like to put us forward to their local educational schools/centres and come on board with us. If you have a project you would like French’s to work with you on, or think would be a good project for us to do, then please let us know by contacting Jann. The same applies to any local company that are keen to promote their business while supporting French’s good causes for Suffolk’s vulnerable animals and people. We do the best we can to promote our sponsors in the media, as we do appreciate the help of their sponsorship and the exchange from a business point of view, so we are only too pleased to help pay them back through media and boarded promotion. Next month we should have a date for our spring Quiz night, keep an eye out for the date in this magazine and on posters, a good fun fish and chip night is always looked forward to by us and the wonderful people who organise the evening, their friends, families and our supporters play a fantastic role in making it a successful night that cannot be missed, defiantly one for your diary. French’s hope all our readers have a good 2017 and continue to support us. URGENTLY NEEDED....Hay and straw for our rescued horses and Donkeys, if you or someone you know has some spare hay or straw sitting in their barn, please pass it on to us, our animals get through so much in the winter months and your hay or straw would be very much appreciated. Thank you VOLUNTEERS, SPONSORS AND FUND RAISERS NEEDED Please contact: Jann Turner 01473 833944 / 07747 755556 Email: jann.turner@hotmail.co.uk

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029 While Kenneth’s face was buried in a cup of tea, I slipped into the office to write this month’s news and lift the lid on life at SESAW. “The Boss” certainly lived up to his name after one of his public appearances last year. Peace reigned until the kitchen door burst open and in struts Himself, full of verbal abuse for every dog in the room. Even Buttons was sent reeling off the chair as the Prima Donna made a beeline for the best bed. The little chap needs to get over himself but I’m glad he enjoys meeting and greeting. It wouldn’t suit a smart black cat like me, or a feline family rescued by one of our Volunteers recently. The adults and kittens were relieved to be safe and warm after living rough at Tesco’s garage in Sudbury. Now, like many cats at SESAW, they await a new home with people who will love them regardless of their colour. We have lots of dogs too so visit us if you are looking for an animal to share your life. We are open 10-1pm, Thurs-Sun. Time for me to slip away again before Kenneth realises his place has been taken by me, Ollie (the Black) Cat.

Winnifred Austin 1937 - 2016 Roger Austin 1954 - 2016

John and Tim would like to thank everyone for there kind messages of support and sympathy following the passing of Winn, wife to John and mother to Roger and Tim in early October 2016 after a short illness bravely fought, followed seven weeks later in November by the sudden loss of Roger, who finally succumbed to Asbestosis. We would like to thank the Ipswich Renal unit for their long term support of Winn’s kidney condition, the Ipswich Hospital Macmillan Cancer Support unit for Roger’s treatment and Dr Irwin of the Hadleigh Health Centre, also Hillary Griffin for conducting both funeral services. Thanks you to all who attended the funerals and for the donations to their chosen charities, Kidney Research UK for Winn and Macmillan Cancer Support for Roger.

Gotta Nice Motor? Nick needs to know!

Nick Thomson, selfconfessed lover of stylishly designed cars, is heading a campaign to encourage Newton Green Golf Club members to reveal their classic vehicles. The club is staging an historic vehicle display as part of its 110th birthday celebrations, which open the annual golf week on Sunday, August 6. Nick, a Lancia enthusiast, is no stranger to such events, having been the founder organiser of the annual Lavenham Rare Breeds car show from 1996-2000. It is held in association with the village’s annual carnival, and today regularly attracts 500 entries. A more modest – perhaps 25-50 – will be aimed for at the golf club event. Nick commented: “We are aware of a number of very interesting vehicles owned by our members, and want to give them the chance to show them off. “Priority will be given to vehicles built prior to around 1970, and we hope to have some space for later built ones of rarity or special interest. Any unusual vehicle, even if it is an old army tank or commercial vehicle will be welcome. If someone has a classic Vincent Black Shadow motorcycle or suchlike in their garage, we’d love to see it. Some owners have already committed themselves to attend, and we are anxious to leave no one out. Nick says he has had a love of classically styled cars from a young age, particularly those from Italy. “Although I am interested in what is beneath the bonnet, my main pleasure is derived from cars that have design idiosyncrasies, with a classic touch, and are fun to drive. In particular, he has three Lancia Gammas from the 1983/84 era. All are Series 111 coupe, with 2.5 litre, four cylinder engines – with “renowned road holding, performance and a body to die for He is a member of Lancia Motor Club. “Fiat rescued a virtually bankrupt Lancia in 1969, but kept the marque independent until fairly recently. Lancia continued to produce a stream of great models until the marque was merged with Chrysler a few years ago. In early days much of Lancia’s production was classic engines and chassis, with customers’ coachbuilders designing and building one-off bodies. Thirteen years ago Nick followed the same dream when he acquired the chassis and 20 boxes of dismembered parts of a classic 1935 Astura, and set about building the car of his desires. The chassis, with its three-litre, V8 engine, has been fitted with an ash frame and four seater drop head aluminium body. It is a real head-turner in its dark red paintwork, and harks back to grand tourer days when the rich rallied their way across Europe to the south of France. The show-stopper (pictured above) will be among those on display at the golf club event, which also features traditional jazz and cream teas.

Art In The Afternoon

Hadleigh Art club, which meets every Tuesday afternoon in the Hadleigh Library Seminar Room, have welcomed quite a few new members since the year started and are happy welcome even more. Just turn up with something to work with and something to do. Over the next few weeks the following programme has be suggested; Feb 7; Use a medium you don’t normally use or tackle a subject you have hitherto avoided. Feb 14; Messing about on the river‌or on a beach. Something very unseasonal. Feb 21 Draw and paint a vase with twigs and maybe a lone flower in it. Sit around with others and then discuss the problems encountered. Feb 28; Draw a pair of shoes.

Hadleigh Market

It’s a very Happy New Year at Hadleigh Market with free stalls available this spring

Held every Friday morning on the Market Place with stalls selling local chutneys, fresh bread, fruit and veg, fresh fish, pastries & lots more….

As many locals know, work has been underway to try and improve the weekly, Friday morning market in Hadleigh and, as a way of trying to encourage more new stalls to the market, Babergh District Council have agreed to offer free pitches to stallholders this Spring. The market is held every Friday between 9am and 2pm and, since investing funds into improving the market, stallholder numbers have increased from an average of three to a weekly average of eight stalls and the regular traders selling fruit and veg, fresh fish and cheese have been joined by a variety of new stalls selling freshly baked cakes, local honey, hot Thai food, homemade candles, fresh flowers, freshly cooked Indian food, local sausages and freshly baked bread. However we are always trying to increase the variety and we strive to make the market the best it can be so to be able to offer out free spring pitches is a huge asset. Although the market is held weekly, stallholders are under no obligation to book every week and we encourage new traders to pick and choose their dates with no minimum number of weeks required and no long term commitment required. We are currently taking bookings up to the end of February, the pitch fee is £15 per market and, in return for every week that you book in January and February, you will get that number back totally free of charge in March, April and May on dates of your choice. For example if you book and pay for Friday January 27th, Friday February 3rd and Friday February 10th then you can have three free weeks on any Friday between March 3rd and May 26th! You are able to do as many or as few weeks as you like, there is no commitment required. To book a stall or to simply find out more information about the market, please call Suffolk Market Events on 07704 627973 or email Justine@suffolkmarketevents.co.uk Finally, what do you, the customer think of the improvements that have been made to Hadleigh market? What else would you like to see at the market and what do you think would make the market even better? Markets are, after all, provided for the customer so if you have any feedback or suggestions, I’d really like to like to hear from you and, in the meantime, I look forward to meeting lots of local shoppers (and new stallholders) at the market over the coming months. Hadleigh market is held every Friday morning from 9am until 2pm on the Market Place off the High Street. To enquire about a stall, to leave any feedback or to simply get in touch, call Suffolk Market Events on 07704 627973 or email Justine@suffolkmarketevents.co.uk www.suffolkmarketevents.co.uk

For Quality & Personal Service FENSA from Start to Finish

Our doctors, nurses and paramedics are under a lot of pressure today, and they are asking for your help. Most of the people we are seeing at the hospital’s Emergency Departments and at the GP surgeries need a lot of time to make sure they are treated well. This is not unusual – people who are already quite ill get a lot sicker during the colder winter months. You can help by using pharmacies and, if that is not enough, by ringing 111. Pharmacies are open for good long hours including evenings and weekends and can help with lots of conditions, like if you have a cold, a sprain or strain, if you have small cuts and bruises, have indigestion, heartburn or diarrhoea. You don’t need an appointment to speak with the pharmacist. If you are not sure what to do, call 111 for free. It is a 24/7 service. The Wellbeing Suffolk service offers support if you feel stressed or depressed. Call them on 0300 123 1781 to find out how they could help. If you feel in crisis, are in despair or suicidal call the Samaritans on 116 123. If you do have an emergency, we are there for you. If it is not urgent, help your NHS by trying other ways first.

Deliciously grey days

I am currently driving the cats (especially small cat) crazy by having the slow cooker working its magic. Although it can feel rather strange cooking onions and browning meat first thing in the morning, it is a wonderful thing to know that for the rest of the day, tea is taking care of itself slowly cooking and filling the house with the comforting smells of a hearty, winter meal. It is this smell which causes said small cat to hang around the kitchen periodically shouting for the day and I can’t say I blame him; working from home it can lead you to feel a sense of continuous hunger throughout the day and there is a pull to just stand over the pot of food and inhale generously in a kind of food meditation for a while. At this time of year it can seem very dull and drab with the continuous grey making the hours from morning to night almost indistinguishable. I am lucky enough to live in rural mid Suffolk and it is the same wonderfully open skies that give the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets, that can also seem wide and empty in these late winter weeks. It feels such a long time since the festivities of Christmas (although if you look hard enough, there are usually still a few Quality Street left somewhere, sticky and melted within their wrappers) and Spring has not yet taken hold and so what better way to lift the spirits than with something deliciously warm and filling. Comfort food: stews, casseroles and soups with crusty bread and butter things that can be eaten from a bowl and with a spoon only, whilst wearing chunky knitwear and, of course, slippers - these are things that make these grey days bearable. And of course, let’s not forget pudding. After making about forty jars of jam last year from the fruit picked from our garden, I said enough is enough and froze the rest which means a fruit pie is never far away. I think I’ve changed my mind, this time of year is not so dreary after all; as long as I stay close to the kitchen. www.jenny-may.com

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre

‘When you’re in pain, it’s easy to stay at home alone. RDA – the people and the horses – are a reason to get out and face the world’. That’s a quote from the Riding for the Disabled Association webpage. You’ll be reading this blog in February, when 2017 is well under way. The New Year celebrations will be a distant memory, but did you see that disabled riders were recognized in the New Years Honors List? Showing that its WHAT YOU CAN DO that really does count. David Lee Pearson (pictured) received a knighthood and Sophie Christiansen was made CBE. They and team GB have put Paralympic dressage riding firmly on the map. Inspirational you could say. Our hunt for two big horses to carry our own adult riders to these same heights continues. We have been fortunate to receive a grant from the RDA towards the cost of their purchase, so all we have to do now is locate the elusive equines. I wonder what Parys, the bossy doyenne of the herd, will say when her supremacy is challenged? Babs and I continue to work what magic we can in our room; its so nice to be warm and dry whilst the rest of the Shelley herd works outside in the winter weather. I see loads of hay being distributed, feeds being mixed, water tubs filled and rugs being adjusted. All part of the daily care for the ponies that underpins the work they do, and it’s the Shelley team of volunteers that keeps us all in good nick. Thank you everyone!

Do You Like Reading Plays?

If so come along to Armchair Players on Monday 13th February 7.30pm at The George, Hadleigh to see what we do. No previous acting necessary. You do not need to learn any lines. We just read the play on the night. Your first visit is free.

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson Last week, I used Skype. I sat in front of my computer before a director and producer and auditioned for a part in a film. We are delighted to announce the appointment of a new lawyer, Kay Baker who brings Tax, Wills, Powers of Attorney and Probate expertise and has acted for elderly and vulnerable clients, as well as families and business people needing advice on tax planning. Kay qualified as a solicitor in 2007 and is a fully accredited member of Solicitors for the Elderly and holds the Older Client Care in Practice Award. She is also a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners. With a particular interest in contentious probate matters, she is one of the very few solicitors in the local area to be a full member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists. She says “I am delighted to join Gotelee and help the community of Hadleigh. Gotelee has an outstanding reputation and I am very much looking forward to helping contribute to the firm’s continued success.” Peter Crix, Head of the Department and who also works with the Hadleigh community, says “Kay is the latest addition to a team that has expanded substantially recently and her arrival will add another string to our bow, particularly given her expertise in acting for elderly and vulnerable clients.” In addition to this, Kay has been working with Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance (HDAA) to help Gotelee become a dementia friendly business. The aim of the HDAA campaign is to raise awareness and understanding of dementia, helping those with dementia and their families to live well. Kay Baker understands the difficulties facing those with dementia and their carers, legally and practically. “If at all possible, planning for a time when you are unable to manage your own affairs should be done well in advance. Having a welldrafted, up-to-date will and a Lasting Power of Attorney makes life much easier for your family and carers. However, if you are trying to deal with the affairs of someone who has already lost mental capacity, we can obtain an order from the Court of Protection to enable you to gain legal authority to do so.” Another area of law which Kay can assist with is if you or a loved one are receiving or in need of care, at home or in a care/nursing home, it may be that the NHS should be paying for that care in its entirety. Unlike financial support from Social Services, this funding is not means tested and is available regardless of your financial situation. If you or your family member has significant physical or mental health needs and it can be established that the need is a primary need for health care rather than social care, then you or they may qualify for free care. The NHS examine 12 healthcare domains in assessing you for continuing care funding, including behavioural needs, mobility, continence and cognition. It is even possible to claim a refund on care fees paid even after your relative’s death. To speak with Kay on any of these matters, please contact her on 01473 822102 or email kay.baker@gotelee.co.uk

Another New Year!!

So, yet another year has gone and before you know it spring will have arrived! It’s a time of renewed energy and new beginnings – the flowers and trees burst back to life after their winter sleep and bring colour and beauty into the world. You can too!! By now we’ve (hopefully) recovered from the excesses of the Christmas party season and can start to look forward to our summer holidays, the warmer weather, trips to the beach, bbqs etc. Maybe the Christmas pud and partying have sabotaged your healthy eating habits and your clothes are feeling a bit snug..! If that’s the case and you want to feel slim and slinky again then why not try Cambridge Weight Plan to retrain your eating habits in time for spring. Cambridge Weight Plan has recently introduced two new products to add to our already wide range – a Thai Green Style Curry joins the Chicken Tikka Style Curry, Macaroni Cheese and Spaghetti Bolognese (all “real food”) and a delicious Strawberry and Apple yoghurt-coated bar. These enhance the current range of soups, shakes, smoothies, bars and porridge. Three* of these products a day provides 100% nutrition at a very low calorie level which means dieters can lose weight quickly (average weight loss is around a stone** a month) but at the same time be confident that they are giving themselves the very best level of nutrition – something that is very difficult to do in less than 1500kcals of “normal” food. Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support. Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has 8 years’ experience. For individual help with your weight problem, contact her today on 01449 737113/07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp. For more information, go to www.cambridgeweightplan.com/valL You can get the body you want, and like thousands of others you could soon be saying ”I wish I’d found Cambridge sooner!” *Women over 5’8” and all men need 4 products. **The rate of weight loss may vary according to the individual.

Why is Belly Dance so popular?

“Belly dance is different. It is highly effective in increasing strength, flexibility and agility and is very sociable. It certainly isn’t as easy as people think but you can achieve competency fairly quickly.” says Lorraine Pendleton, Belly Dance Instructor. “You do not have to show your belly or have any special kit to come to classes and generally the dance is done with bare feet”. The Sudbury Belly Dance group are based in Sudbury AFC Dance Studio and classes are on a Monday from 7.30-8.30. For more information contact Lorraine on 07807 635198.

Our meeting Monday January 9th Our first speaker for the new year was Peter Miller from King's seeds who gave an entertaining talk which involved a brief history of this long established business. William King apparently had sent vegetable seeds to Charles Darwin no less. The photograph shows Peter Miller (on the right) with past president John Rye and the actual packaging used in the transaction, addressed to Darwin. The company is trying to reintroduce the seed varieties that were sent. As well as well as talking about other prestigious members of the company, such as N.W. King who became president of the National Sweet Pea Society, Peter also gave advice on successful seed growing. His top tips are always to use seed sowing compost, to water with tap water as rainwater from butts maybe contaminated, and not to sow seed too early. There is apparently, a countryman's well established way of testing if the soil is warm enough which he shared with the group, but I will just say late April is a good time as a general rule! Our next meeting – Monday February 13th The next item on our programme is a visit to Anglesey Abbey gardens to enjoy some early spring bulbs. This will be on Monday February 13th. We are always happy to welcome new members and would be pleased to see you there. If you are interested in joining us for this visit please telephone 01473 517608 for further details. We will be back at the town hall in March - more details next month. Andy Leeder, Chairman

The East Anglian Garden Group was founded more than 40 years ago by some of East Anglia’s leading horticulturalists. Today it is an active and enthusiastic group of keen gardeners, both professional and amateur, with a wide range of interests within this field. We hold monthly meetings at Hitcham Village Hall, on Saturdays at 2.30 pm from October through to April, with illustrated talks from expert speakers, covering all aspects of plant usage, cultivation and design. After the lecture, we enjoy tea and refreshments provided by the members, where we have the chance to socialise, and share knowledge with other gardeners. At every meeting there is the opportunity to buy donated plants and gardening books, at very reasonable prices. Throughout the year, we organise outings to private gardens, botanic gardens and specialist nurseries. There is also an annual garden holiday, this year we will be spending 3 days visiting wonderful gardens in Derbyshire, (places still available), and in midsummer we hold an evening social event, in a member’s garden, where we enjoy a delicious supper. We are always hoping to recruit new and enthusiastic members, and for a modest subscription of £12 per annum, members are entitled to attend all talks and meetings. Outings and our annual Celebrity Speaker do have a small extra charge to cover costs if necessary. Visitors can attend a meeting for £5. On February 18th 2017, our Celebrity Speaker is Matthew Wilson, winner of the ‘People’s Choice’ Garden at Chelsea last year, with his ‘Garden for Yorkshire’; Channel 4’s Landscape Man, and regular panellist on Gardeners Question Time. He spent 10 years at the RHS as curator at Harlow Carr and then Hyde Hall. His talk is entitled ‘Star Plants for Small Gardens’. He will be telling us how to fill our gardens with drama, with plants for seasonal interest, so that the garden can look striking at any time of year. Tickets for this event, on February 18th, are £10 for non- members and £5 for members, including tea. Those, and membership information are available from the Secretary, Matthew Long on email flagpartnership@btinternet.com or phone 01449 741551. Our speaker for March 4th is Dave Ward, Director of Horticulture, lecturing on Beth Chatto Gardens, Past Present and Future. If you love gardening, and want to meet friendly new faces, come along and join us, we look forward to welcoming you. www.eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Down to Earth ...with Dave With Christmas gone and the arrival of a new year, now is perhaps the time for some reflection and blessing counting. We consider ourselves very lucky to have picked Hadleigh as a new place to live some eleven years ago. We moved from a big old house in Essex, in need of constant maintenance that, in winter even had ice on the INSIDE of the windows! to a modern, easy to warm and maintain house in the very centre of a very pleasant community. Within walking distance we have access to good shops, including surely the best hardware store and butchers for miles, and superstores not far away. An excellent health centre that, in spite of problems with the health service, still seems to cope, this is all the more needed as we get older, and a regular bus service to Ipswich and Sudbury which, for the moment at least, is free. Close family live nearby, very good friends have moved from Dorset and Sussex and are now living in Long Melford and Sudbury, two very pleasant places, along with Lavenham, that are on our frequent must visit destinations. We belong to numerous friendly groups that take up a fair bit of our time, not least, two gardening groups. There is always a garden to visit or a speaker to sometimes amuse, or at least keep up the interest. There are more than enough restaurants and pubs within walking distance or a short drive, and whilst there is a swimming pool and a gym, who needs them when my fitness centre is my large allotment. Even at this time of year vegetables are brought home on a regular basis, and you don't get that from a gym workout. Nothing is perfect however. Who thought it was a good idea to virtually close the police station? and I dread going on the A12 back into Essex. No article is complete without some mention of what is going on down on the allotment and in the garden. The daffodils are showing plenty of green shoots and the first flowers can be expected soon. It all depends on what sort of weather we get. The first early potatoes have been bought and are laid out in egg trays to chit in the shed. There is no rush to plant them out as any growth would only be killed off by a frost. This year I have gone back to the variety 'Rocket' and only these first earlies will be grown. This year's seed selection has arrived by post from Kings seeds, they will be safely stored in a tin box and gradually sown as and when it says on the packet, some in the greenhouse in seed trays when there is room, and some direct sown on the allotment. At present you can't move in the greenhouse due to the standard fuchsias stored in there. The fleece covers used last year were a failure and the plants only just survived. So this year they have been kept in the greenhouse, a bit cramped, but they do look a lot happier. That's all for this time, Dave

Hadleigh Healing Society

The news seems to be dominated by “Brexit”, terrorist acts, and the new President of America which causes us to ponder on how all this is going to impact on our lives. None of us have a crystal ball so we have to take each day as it comes. For some each day is a problem on how to get through that day. It is a challenge that they feel they cannot cope with. To feel like this, that know one cares, or would listen, brings on a feeling of isolation. We, the qualified, registered healers will listen, will talk, all in the strictest confidence to those who feel they need that “listening ear”. Facelift on the way for Newton Green Club House

A major facelift for the interior of Newton Green Golf Club is on its way. The club is to invest £40,000 to upgrade the social side of its premises, which will further enhance its suitability for functions serving both members and other user groups in the Sudbury area. Peter Philpott, chairman, confirmed the cost would be covered by a recent refund from HMRC. He said Newton had been part of a group of several hundred members’ clubs across the county that had been involved in a successful action to recover taxes paid in recent years on green fees. He continued: “Our club house is very popular with other groups staging functions, and we hope to attract additional bookings by considerably increasing its ambience. “Most of the VAT refund we have received will originally have come from people from the area who payed green fees. In one way we are giving this money back to the community in the form of better facilities for local functions, as well as enhancing the social experience of our own members and visiting golfers.” Mr Philpott said the scheme had been on the back burner for some time as the club had been using its resources to ensure the course could compare with any in the region. He continued: “Membership wise we have just had our most encouraging year for a decade, and the upgrade of the club house, and some remarkable playing successes on the course, are all part of what has been a very successful period for the club.” Work on upgrading the club is due to begin before the end of January, and will include new lighting, carpets and furnishings. The current small dining room will be developed as a stud bar to enable greater flexibility of rooms across the building.

More Trophies for Newton’s Alice Barlow

Newton Green’s Alice Barlow brought down the curtain on her outstanding season by picking up the two leading awards at the annual meeting of Suffolk Ladies’ County Golf Association. She won the Joy Winn Salver for the lowest scratch scores during the season, and the Nigel Birrell Trophy awarded by the county captain to the most outstanding golfer of the year. Alice, 18, also received her county colours. She is in her final year at Thomas Gainsborough School, Great Cornard, and will be concentrating on playing in leading women’s amateur events across the country. Over the last year she has won all the leading Suffolk ladies’ trophies, as well as being the first winner of the national junior champion of champions’ trophy, and finished seventh in the Telegraph BMW junior championships in Portugal. Also at the Suffolk presentation, Newton’s Eloise Aldous, now playing as a driving range professional, was confirmed as the coming year’s organiser of Suffolk girls’ junior golf.

Surviving Winter In Hadleigh Progress Report

We are a registered local charity serving Hadleigh and twelve surrounding villages. We comprise a Chairman, a Treasurer and a third Trustee all giving their time freely. We are established to help anybody in and around Hadleigh who has difficulty keeping warm in winter. We have helped 12 individuals to date by providing blankets, coal, clothing and heaters and by raising their cases with other organisations to enable them to access further assistance. We can also assist in cases requiring support with heating system difficulties. There is no restriction on age, disability or whether in receipt of other means of support. Currently we have available about ten bags of coal and would be obliged if there is a good samaritan or a community minded youth organisation willing to assist us in sacking and moving this. If this involves a pick-up or trailer we would be willing to pay any expenses incurred. We rely on the generosity of the public and other benefactors, particularly in and around Hadleigh and thank everybody for their contributions which enable us to help less fortunate people SURVIVE WINTER IN HADLEIGH. Suffolk Cross Country Championships 2017

Congratulations to Victoria Kenny from Hadleigh Hares for becoming the first ever Cross Country Champion for Hadleigh since the records began back in 1928. Vic lead from the start on the tough 8km course around Heveningham Hall. Hadleigh had some other good results with our Female team of Rachel Bodsworth, Davina Greenwell and Victoria Kenny coming 3rd in the team event. John Scaife won the veteran title for the second year in a row and the male team finished in 8th position.

Looking to the past at Orchard Barn

At Orchard Barn we learn from the past to improve the future. Past generations couldn’t pop down to the nearest DIY store to purchase their building materials, instead they used what was at hand. Clay dug from the ditches was used to make daub, hazel was coppiced to make wattle, trees were felled to create timber frames and shingles for the roof, flint used to face walls. Very little material was transported any distance and often it could be reused. We have clay lump blocks several hundred years old that can still be used. Want some string? Stinging nettle or rosebay willow herb fibre can be braided to create cordage. They didn’t have to worry about carbon foot prints! Of course some of these techniques take time but our ancestors didn’t have TVs, computers or mobile phones to fill their days. If you’d like to learn any of these skills then our website is orchardbarn.org.uk or contact us on 01473 658193 or 07766 054042
