Come and enjoy the beautiful River Stour

Every year an estimated 750,000 visitors come from all round the world to Dedham Vale and the River Stour. They come to Constable Country where the artist painted many of his most famous works around Dedham, Bergholt and Flatford, or Gainsborough Country where this artist lived at Sudbury. There is even a museum in Dedham of the works of Alfred Munnings, renowned for his paintings of horses. You can enjoy this beautiful English countryside by a variety of means, by car or on foot, but by far the most evocative way to savour the river is by boat. The River Stour Trust operates trip boats from its bases at Dedham, Flatford and Sudbury. You can enjoy the river and its wildlife in a silent Edwardian electric boat, or take a trip right back in time in the Trust’s 160-year-old restored lighter, of the same style as those that Constable painted. The boats operate on weekends throughout the summer from Easter to October, or you can charter a whole boat for a magical voyage for your family and friends on any day of the week. Or for the more adventurous you can hire a canoe or rowing boat from a variety of operators along the Stour. Further information: 01787 313199, www.riverstourtrust.org.

Ah Ha! That pesky cat, Ollie, is out and about now Spring is here, leaving me in peace to write this month’s News, starting with an appeal for a new arrival. Billy, a Jack Russell cross, is a 15 year old gentleman, sadly homeless because his owner died. After so many years being the one and only, he desperately needs a foster home where he is the sole pet for his remaining years. He’ll give you lots of fuss, take you for lots of lovely walks and let you cook him Cordon Bleu meals, with a few treats on the side to make life interesting. SESAW would look after any veterinary care so please get in touch if you think Billy could be the King of your Castle. If you received your Community News early, do visit the SESAW Easter Fair, 1st April, 11-3pm at Whatfield Village Hall. Next is our Spring Fair, 10-3pm, 23rd April at the Old School, Long Melford. Lots of goodies including a Fathers’ Day table, Mandy’s delicious Preserves and a lovely splash of colour from Neil Scott Nurseries. Also a tombola, raffle, refreshments, free parking – and me! Our rabbit expert, Karen, will be talking to visitors at the Green Island Gardens and Nursery on Easter Sunday 16th April. Do say hello if you call in at Green Island Park Road, Ardleigh, CO7 7SP. Mum says I should remind dog owners to keep Easter Eggs well away from their pets because chocolate is poisonous to us pooches, as are sultanas. That warning will dampen the spirits of my pal, Sugar Face, who was caught in mid bite of a cake last Christmas. He’s pretty good at pinching biscuits but the silly boy has yet to master the art of devouring the treats unseen. Must go to investigate the aroma of hot cross buns drifting out of the kitchen. I hope there’s some left (minus the dried fruit) for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. A Man for all Seasons Eric Jennings 1934 – 2017

I was one of the many who attended the service for the celebration of Eric’s life on Wednesday 15th March. His love of sport was well known and with the football and cricket seasons not overlapping when he was in his prime his was ‘non stop’ engagement. He was an outstanding footballer who captained the club for many seasons and held numerous positions in administration. He was a regular member of the Cricket Club’s first team as well as holding the position of match secretary for several seasons. Eric was a shining example of sportsmanship, loyalty and fair play - his boyish enthusiasm for life and recreation remains an abiding memory. Barbara’s diligence and compassion over the last few years has been amazing - he was a lucky man! Richard English

News from Whatfield School

It’s difficult to believe that Spring is here already. As usual our pupils are thoroughly enjoying being outside in the fantastic outside area we have, and are looking forward to all the sporting and outside activities we provide. Pupils are planning what to plant in the gardens and allotment, and the daffodils in the Early Years area are looking beautiful. Although we may seem to be out and about a lot, at sporting festivals and tournaments, we also take pride in our academic work too. This year we have been working hard on our writing, and making good use of all the opportunities to develop and create original writing. We will be sharing some of our fantastic work at the pyramid training day on writing in April. Pupils continue to learn the ukulele, and have been learning a whole variety of new songs. The ukuleles were funded from a generous grant from the Rosa Simons fund, and pupils have had great fun learning to play them. We were so proud to be told the fantastic news that we have achieved the bronze Linguamarque for our brilliant work on modern foreign languages – French is taught to all of the children at Whatfield, even as young as Reception! This award reflects the effort we put into ensuring that we work at a good standard and provide a wide range of learning experiences for our pupils. Our aim is to look out into the wide world beyond! We have lots of exciting activities to look forward to for the rest of the term, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you will be made very welcome. For those who like to book things early, we have our annual Easter Fair on the 31st March, so you are very welcome to come along and meet us then. Please do telephone 01473 823 309 or email admin@whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk to make an arrangement to meet us and take a tour. Lynne Golding, Headteacher www.whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk

Stoke-by-Nayland WEA

Stoke-by-Nayland WEA is holding its AGM on Thursday 6th April 2017 in Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall at 7.30 pm. This will be followed by a presentation entitled ‘Submarines’ with Richard Channon. Richard will tell us how a submarine works, give a potted history of the development of the submarine, tell us something about the ocean environment, and an account of operations over the past century. He joined Dartmouth in May 1956 and left the Navy in September 1990. He started with submarines in 1961, passed the CO's Qualifying Course in 1969, following which he commanded HMS Olympus. Thereafter he had a variety of sea and shore jobs, most of them submarine-associated, including command of HMS Churchill and Captain of the 2nd Submarine Squadron in Plymouth. After leaving the Navy he was Clerk of the Worshipful Company of Shipwrights until retiring in 2002. All past, present and future members welcome to this FREE lecture and complimentary coffee For further details please contact Sue Whiteley on 01787 210945 or email - whiteleysa@hotmail.co.uk

GSOIBBON S LICITO RS Howard at Hintlesham Hall Golf Club Spring is here my dear readers. The clocks have gone forward and it is light in the evenings. I am glad that you all enjoyed my picture from The Galle Face Hotel in Sri Lanka. One of your number suggested that my astonishment could be expressed in the phrase “Gosh! Buttered Parsnips are available here”. I am not sure that my senses come alive at the thought of parsnips generally; I may have been surprised at the sight of a courgette in Colombo. I know that some of you have been concerned that my chauffeur Frank’s gardening exploits may need attention. He has pruned his wisteria at entirely the wrong time of year and now risks frost bite in his buds; he may never recover from that. Well, Frank was taking a house guest and me for a cup of coffee at Hintlesham Hall only to find it was closed for a private function. We wafted by and arrived in the portals of the separately owned Hintlesham Hall Golf Club (Tel. 01473 652761). The proprietors are Debbie Roblin and her husband. Debbie and her staff looked after us in an exemplary fashion so much so that we returned for Sunday lunch and a mid week repast. The Golf Club is set in some 150 rolling acres and Debbie kindly drove me around the grounds and the course in a buggy. The picture shows Debbie and me in front of the vehicle. You can pop in for coffee and cakes, afternoon tea and excellent lunches or just a drink. Everything is wonderfully prepared and the staff are attentive and one is made to feel special. That is something that so many hotels and restaurants lack. Why not pop along and give it a try – tell Debbie that I sent you. There is an Easter Lunch on Sunday, 16 April and then a St George’s Day lunch on 23 April with The Three Chordettes entertaining. It really is a good place for a Wake if you should sadly have a funeral or on a brighter note, a wedding and you can even play a round first! I received enormous interest in the position of my new Secretary. I am pleased to say that I have now appointed Alison Brown who has a wealth of legal experience. Whilst as I mentioned previously there is some expansion arriving in the Inheritance Tax nil rate band in the shape of an additional £100,000 allowance for a house left to children, the Government fees payable upon a probate application are to leap as from May when Estates up to £500,000 will attract a fee of £1,000 and up to £1 million a fee of £4,000. Do approach us in connection with your conveyancing needs. Support local business where you will receive good service and the benefit of vast experience all at a reasonable fee. So many of these on-line outfits dress up their charges to appear low but in fact they add-up to a figure greater than ours. Happy Easter. Howard Gibbons

David Burr’s board of directors are delighted to announce the arrival of Julian Chung to further strengthen the established sales and lettings team in Leavenheath

Julian brings with him a wealth of experience having been the branch manager of a successful corporate estate agency within the market town of Hadleigh for the last 11 years. Jack Thornley, Managing Director of David Burr Leavenheath Ltd, added “Following our most successful year to date, we are thrilled to have had the opportunity to add Julian to our experienced team. With a noticeable growth in demand for property in Hadleigh and the surrounding villages in recent years, we are excited by the prospect of expanding into what is fast becoming one of the most popular areas of Suffolk. Julian’s arrival signals the next step in our expansion as we look to cement our status in Hadleigh and the surrounding area via a new sales and lettings office due to open later this year”. Julian added “I am really looking forward to joining David Burr, it is as a company I have always held in high regard and I'm excited by the future expansion plans into Hadleigh. I have enjoyed my time working in the area and serving the local community over the last 11 years and want to thank those that have put their trust in me to sell their property. I look forward to seeing any previous clients again and continuing those relationships as an when you require the need for advice or opinion. In what will no doubt be a challenging year for our country, I remain confident in the desirability of Suffolk, reinforced by what has a particularly buoyant market in recent times.” 01206 263007 leavenheath@davidburr.co.uk davidburr.co.uk

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Whilst other parts of the Budget hogged the headlines, I suspect that the item announced by the Chancellor that will have the more lasting impact is ‘Tlevels’. These are new technical qualifications which seek to address our long standing failure to be as productive as other countries. In short, comparable nations are generally able to produce more national wealth for each person in work. That means in practical terms not only that we have to work longer hours for the same standard of living, but it means that we lag behind many European nations in income per head – we are poorer, comparatively speaking. In 2015, for every comparable hour worked in Germany, the UK produced 37% less output. Of course, there is much to be proud of in our economic performance of late – record low unemployment; low inflation and a growing economy – and we have historic advantages like our language and respected legal system. Nevertheless, most experts recognise that our historic underperformance in productivity is linked to a weaker skills base, even if we have leading universities in the more academic fields. Put simply, technical education in our country has failed to result in enough young adults with firstrate skills, and any plan to tackle the productivity deficit must establish a system of education that rectifies this. As such, I welcomed the Chancellor’s announcement of a new ‘T-level’ system. Where the route from GCSE to A-level to University is both well-established and well-regarded, the same is not currently true for technical education. The Budget seeks to put these new courses on an equal footing with the traditional academic route by increasing the number of hours that students train by 50% and simplifying the current 13,000 possible qualifications to just 15. An additional £500m of extra funding has been allocated to pay for this new system. When I meet local businesses in South Suffolk they often cite recruiting staff with the right skills as their toughest challenge, and it could be even harder after Brexit. Improving technical education can boost our prosperity and strengthen our nation as it leaves the EU.

This year a record 110 Year 10 students from Hadleigh High School attended a dementia friends information sessions to improve their understanding of dementia and to help raise awareness in our community. The students committed to doing more to raise understanding and awareness. This included; being more patient in shops, offering help if somebody looked confused. To telling their families and friends more about dementia and adding that they had become dementia friends to their CVS. Sam Kidby teacher in charge of organising this session says “It has given the students an excellent opportunity to gain an understanding of dementia and the emotional, social and psychological impact it has on people, allowing them to be more emphatic towards others affected by the disease in the future”. Phil Wells, chair of the HDAA says “Most young people will have a member of the family or close family friend affected by dementia over the next 20 years and it is hugely important that everyone understand the difficulties they face and how family can make a difference. These young people are a sign of hope.” Dementia Friends awareness sessions take just one hour. If you would like to know more the alliance can deliver dementia friends awareness session to your business, friends, club or staff please contact us on hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk and we will put you into contact with anyone of our eighteen dementia champions from Hadleigh who will happily arrange a session for you. Welcome to the Travel Stop Cruise Show an event that will whisk you around the world without leaving Suffolk…

A cruise holiday offers endless possibilities. Explore diverse cultures, cuisine, architecture and climates. Whether you’re seeking sun and sand or history and adventure, there is always something different to see and do. Whether you are a first time cruiser or a seasoned enthusiast, cruising the world is exciting for a number of reasons. Experience many of the world’s exciting destinations during many incredible ports of call all in one holiday and all whilst only having to unpack once. Travel in the highest levels of comfort, with impeccable customer service and plentiful amenities on board. The atmosphere on a cruise ship is guaranteed to exceed your expectations and cruise holidays are also great value for money. A cruise typically includes your meals, snacks, entertainment, and en-suite accommodation so, with all this included in the price, there are often only your personal expenses to budget for. To some people cruising is all about the formal occasion and the golden age of cruising. There are some cruise lines whose style still encompasses dinner jackets, white gloved waiters, silver service and opulent surroundings. Many people are still leaning towards these formal cruises and many brands successfully cater for these tastes. On the other hand, an increasing amount of passengers prefer the more relaxed and freestyle approach to cruising - a philosophy that is all about freedom and flexibility and there are a number of cruise lines that offer this laid-back service. These offer a casual style without any obligation or need to dress formally for dinner. The world of cruising has so much to offer all types of customers with cruise ships that accommodate anything from 80 passengers to 6500 passengers, some with traditional features including afternoon tea and some with surf parks and fairground rides. It’s really important to choose the right cruise line for you, and with this in mind Travel Stop have organised the ultimate cruise event to showcase all of the UK’s leading cruise lines and experts. This event, combined with their passion for cruising will really whisk you around the world without leaving Suffolk. Travel Stop is able to give reliable, unbiased recommendations and independent advice whilst providing the highest possible levels of customer service. The aim is never to just meet expectations, but to exceed them and to think of the things our customers have not. This is what makes Travel Stop different. And the expertise within the team of knowledgeable consultants will ensure that the cruise you book will be exactly the right one for you.

The Travel Stop Cruise Event is on Sunday 23rd April 2017

at The Guild Hall, Market Place, Hadleigh, Suffolk IP7 5DN. Register today - you will not be disappointed!

Hollow Trees Farm Butchery is a rare beast! It is a butchery where you will find that the majority of the meat on sale has been reared in the fields and barns just a few metres away and the farm team and butchers are happy to show you exactly how all the animals are cared for. Hollow Trees is a 140 acre mixed farm where you will find cattle, sheep, pigs and goats all happily munching away on grass and hay or resting in the barn on a bed of clean straw. When the time comes to take them to the local abattoir the farm team load and transport them there, ensuring every animal has a stress free journey that is as short as possible. All the livestock are monitored every step of the way. Returning carcasses are handled carefully by our team of expert Butchers. The butchery cutting area is always on view in the busy farm shop so there are no secrets in any of our processes. At Hollow Trees Farm the Butchers are also masters of creativity having produced a great range of ‘cook in the tin’ dishes. A convenient range of delicious meals such as Chinese marinated pork or beef stir fry to enjoy at home, with an added bonus of no washing up involved! Sitting alongside these meals you will find our best sellers such as pork sausages, beef steaks, roasting joints and so much more to choose from and inspire you Eating well and knowing what's in our children’s food is really important so our enterprising butchery team have created a range called Mini Marvels, these are bite size portions of meat balls and sausages all made from Hollow Trees Farm meat together with mini chicken fillet bites produced from locally sourced chicken . Meal times with the children can be made tasty and fun with Hollow Trees Mini Marvels. The Butchers love a bit of banter, and pride themselves on delivering quality meat together with excellent customer service. So drop by soon and meet the team at Hollow Trees Farm and see exactly where your meat comes from. Hollow Trees Farm, Semer Ipswich IP7 6HX 01449 741247 shop@hollowtrees.co.uk www. hollowtrees.co.uk

Puddle Ducks – New Saturday classes in Monks Eleigh for babies, toddlers & pre-school age children

We are very pleased to announce we have extended our hours at Tye Farm in Monks Eleigh and now teach here on Saturday mornings as well as Tuesdays. It’s lovely and warm, has parking on-site and changing rooms at the venue. It even has a coffee machine! There are many benefits to swimming with your child, listed below are just a few: • Classes really help to build your child’s confidence around water, especially as they learn vital personal survival skills and can even help with activities at home such as hair washing! • The fun content of lessons with lots of songs and activities helps children to learn without even realising it! • Regular swimming often improves eating and sleeping patterns • As classes are based on age rather than ability, your child (and you!) will be making friends with children at a similar age • Even though gentle, baby swimming classes provide a complete physical work-out: strengthening your baby's heart, lungs and respiratory system • Being in water with your child lets you share their swimming journey and learn how to practise in your own time • Encouraging children to take regular exercise helps to promote a healthy routine from an early age Our teachers adapt every activity to suit each child. Our baby-led swimming approach ensures that your child's needs are expertly fulfilled - never forcing development, but rather nurturing it to ensure a positive experience and love of swimming. March has been rather an eventful month here at Kersey Mill. The springtime activity on the river is a welcome sight. The swans have returned, ducks making their nests and the Kestrel’s have returned to sleep in the refurbished box on the top of the Mill, ready to nest and lay their eggs. Storm Doris caused damage bringing down an old Ash Tree and Willow tree both which had grown along the river bank but were too old and weak to withstand the high winds. Sadly we had previously lost a most beautiful copper beach tree; we are hoping to use some of the timber as teeth within the spur wheels which are located beneath the Hurst frame. We welcomed on a very wet and soggy day 27 primary school children from Hintlesham School. They had been invited by the River Stour Valley Project. They helped with the planting of a variety of trees. This is a benefit to the ecology of the River Stour and its tributaries. The project has focused on stretches of the River Stour from upstream of Stratford St. Mary to Sudbury, the River Brett downstream of Lavenham and the river Box downstream from Little Waldingfield. The children thoroughly enjoyed getting involved despite the wet and windy conditions; at the end of their visit they enjoyed some craft activities at Glass & Craft. On our open day we were blessed with beautiful warm sunshine. The water wheel was turning and the model of the Mill was on show for the visitors to see. We had David Coe the model maker and Bill Griffiths (Millwright) here to chat and discuss the project. Our next open day is Sunday April 23rd “Drive it Day which will see a number of prestige and vintage vehicles on show here at the Mill. The general public are welcome and we will have the Mill &, gardens open. There will be various attractions and refreshments. Bring the family. Open from 10am until 4pm.

Review your Will to take advantage of Inheritance Tax changes

Soaring house prices have meant more people than ever are being hit with inheritance tax (IHT). In the last financial year, the government raked in £4.7billion thanks to the charge - up 22 per cent on the previous 12 months. As a result, new IHT allowances will be introduced next month that apply specifically to your main residence. The idea is to bring down the tax bill for millions of normal British families whose parents' or grandparents' estates have been bumped over the current tax-free threshold after the value of their home rose so drastically. IHT is imposed at 40 per cent on the estates of those who die, above the main threshold set at £325,000 for a single person. This doubles to up to £650,000 for married couples and civil partners, who pass on their wealth to the surviving spouse on death and have not used any of their allowance themselves. This means that a widow or widower may pass an estate worth up to £650,000 tax-free, with the remainder of the estate then taxed at 40 per cent. What are the new rules? From 6 April an additional 'residence nil-rate band' of £100,000 per person will be introduced - which will effectively take the threshold at which IHT becomes payable to £850,000 for family beneficiaries. The threshold will increase again to £125,000 in the following 2018/19 tax year, £150,000 in 2019/20 and to £175,000 in 2020/21. So in 2020/21 a house worth £1 million could be passed on tax free - if you use up your entire nil-rate band allowances for both spouses or civil partners plus the additional residence nil-rate bands for both. How can Gotelee help? We are able to advise as to the most tax efficient way to manage your estate and finances – from trusts to tax and more. We can help you review your current circumstances and assist you with making you as tax efficient as possible. New member of the team!

Hadleigh Physio has just hired a new member of the team! However, he is slightly different to our other staff! We’ll give you a few clues; he is shorter than most of the team, he has considerably more body hair and you might not be able to book into his diary! However, he does have lots of things in common with them. He is adventurous, caring, approachable and just as qualified at improving people’s day! He is keen to be involved in many aspects of the business from increasing his core stability in Pilates to relaxing during a Swedish Massage. Have you guessed who it is yet? While all of us are very excited about his arrival, the devastating news is that he hasn’t got a name yet! This is where we need your help! He is making his first public appearance at the Hadleigh Show on the 20th May so please come and see him and the team at the stand! We want you and your family to think of the best name for our fluffiest member of the team! The more creative the better. So start thinking now! There will be a prize for the winner. In order to follow his story please like us on Facebook - he’s got a very busy diary planned, from climbing Ben Nevis to a trip up around the Dolomites! It would be a crime to miss it!

Monday March 13th This was our AGM, conducting the important business of electing our committee for the year ahead, as well as both reviewing the year gone by and looking forward to the new one. The committee was reelected with one exception, as after 13 years of valuable service, John Wild had decided to step down. We thanked John for his great input to the club over the years, though he is not escaping entirely! John has kindly agreed to run our monthly competitions, and after the business of the AGM had finished he also gave an interesting and topical talk on daffodils. Our year ahead is full of varied interest, covering subjects as diverse as patio planting, forest gardening, pests and diseases and medieval gardening. We will also be having trips to Paugers Garden and Nursery near Bury St Edmunds, Pensthorpe Natural Park at Thakenham and, finally the much more local Place For Plants East Bergholt where, following on from our recent successful visit to Anglesey Abbey, we will once more be donning our warm clothing for a winter garden visit. Wednesday April 12th This will be the first of our visits which will be to Paugers Garden and Nursery. This will combine two of the favourite things for most gardeners - viewing a garden and then plant shopping! As it is a relatively local visit we will be running it on a car share basis. Non members as well as members are welcome - please telephone 01473 824573 to book a place. We hope you can join us. Andy Leeder, Chairman

HIDDEN GARDENS of HADLEIGH Saturday 10th June 2017 11am to 5pm

Luci Skinner, the owner of Woottens’s nursery at Wehaston, was our speaker on February 5th, with her talk about Auriculas, which she admitted were her favourite flowers. Woottens sell over 500 varieties of Auriculas, a collection started ten years ago by the nursery’s founder, the late Michael Loftus. Luci described alpine, borders and show varieties, explaining their intriguing names, including Selfies, Fancies, Stripes and Edges. They make delightful pot plants, and the early method of displaying them, Auricula Theatres, has come back into fashion. Luci’s infectious enthusiasm meant that many members returned home clutching a Selfie or Fancy to brighten their February garden. February 18th saw the arrival of our celebrity speaker for the year Matthew Wilson. A very full hall, with lots of new members and guests, thoroughly enjoyed his talk, Star Plants for Small Gardens. He began by describing the design of the typical English Garden, and encouraged us to think in terms of a theatrical production, when deciding what to plant. Matthew went through a list of plants, (which is available to download from our website), telling us the best positions, their likes and dislikes, and how to avoid failure when planting new specimens. His comprehensive list of recommended plants ranged from Grasses, Annuals, Bulbs, Shrubs and Perennials, and everyone went away full of ideas for spring planting. On March 4th, we enjoyed Dave Ward, Garden and Nursery Director from Beth Chatto’s wonderful garden. He told us about its history, with photos from the early days of unproductive farmland, to its gradual transformation through Beth Chatto’s lifetime, to the magical garden it is today. Her mantra, ‘right plant, right place’ should be followed by us all. Beth was the first gardener at Chelsea to place plants into groups for shade, dry and sunny positions. Knowledge that we take for granted today, but was innovative in the 1960’s. Our next speaker at Hitcham, will be on Saturday April 1st, at 2.30, where the speaker will be Simon White, from Peter Beales Roses, with his talk, The Romance of Old Roses. New members are very welcome. Information on membership, Plant Lists, Speakers and Garden Visits can be found on our website. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net.

Spring is almost within touching distance, some mornings are sunny, bright and cheerful and then the weather changes to cold and wet. We just have to make the best of the good weather for outside jobs and retreat into the greenhouse when the heavens open up. As over wintered standard fuchsias have now been moved outside and the fifty or so pots of onion sets have been planted out on the allotment there is more room in the greenhouse for seed sowing and the raising of young plants. As is always the case there is still never enough room. How I envy Monty from Gardener's World the vast amount of space he has in his various undercover areas, still, you can only work with what you have. The trays of seed potatoes are showing some healthy shoots and should be ready for planting out very soon, no rush, we have just used the remainder of last year's crop, with only a few being wasted. Don't be tempted to use any of them for seed, it is best to buy fresh seed potatoes each year, this helps to reduce the spread of diseases. If you are planting up any seeds, whether in trays or, as I prefer, in small modules, only use special seed sowing compost. Multipurpose compost is too rich and should only be used for potting on. Also only use tap water for the emerging seedlings. This goes against the grain as I have always used rain water for everything in the greenhouse. Apparently rain water picks up all sorts of nasties from the roof and from water butts and can kill off the emerging seedlings. It is fine once they are established and of course much preferred for all other watering in the garden and greenhouse. On the allotment the rows of daffodils have once again appeared as if by magic, with several bunches picked every week for indoors. This works very well as it means that any flowering in the garden can be left untouched. There seem to be plenty of daffodils about this year. It should now be possible to start giving the grass a light cut, just pick a dry day and don't cut it very short, a trim around the edges will always make any lawn look ten times better. On a recent trip the to the allotment I was surprised to find what turned out to be an owl pellet. I found this under the tall wooden raspberry frame at the far end of the plot. It was about an inch long, dark and oval in shape and when I opened it up, inside I found all sorts of feathers and bones, including a complete small bird's skull. It seems that owls eat their prey whole and then cough up the waste material wrapped up in this pellet, this stops any sharp bits damaging their digestive system. From the size of the pellet it is possibly from a barn owl. As I am vary rarely down there at dusk when it is likely to be about I doubt I will ever see or hear the owl. None the less, very interesting and a first for me. That's all for this time, Dave

Robert Lindsay, Green Party candidate for Cosford in the county council elections

Come to our open days on 29th and 30th April 10:00×16:00

This may well be the last thing you will read from me before the Suffolk County Council election on May 4th. So I thought it was time I let you know my priorities if I am elected as a Green county councillor. There are a few things that come up time and time again as I knock on doors in the huge Cosford ward which includes the villages of Lavenham, Cockfield, Bildeston, Elmsett and Monks Eleigh. One of the biggest is the apparent inability of the county council to fill in potholes in a timely manner. One man in Brent Eleigh has been waiting since June 2016 for a pothole outside his home to be fixed. Apparently Suffolk County Council have a record that the work has been done, even though it hasn’t. I suspect this is because the County Council outsourced road maintenance a few years back and now find it harder to manage the work. So one of the top priorities for myself and other Greens elected will be to push for the county to extract itself from this disastrous highways contract. We’d like to have direct accountability for council tax payers’ money: in other words a line be put in our council tax bills which points out how much is being spent filling in potholes. No pothole should be left unfilled. The other thing that crops up time and time again is the councils’ slow destruction of decent regular bus services for villages. The county has slashed the amount it contributes to rural buses in the past four years so that many residents now have no scheduled bus service at all to towns such as Hadleigh, Sudbury and Stowmarket or at the very best one or two a week. Yes money is tight. But this is a question of priorities. Villages need basic services to function as viable communities, and regular buses to towns like Hadleigh, Sudbury, Bury and Ipswich are part of those services. Why prioritise building new roads when people are unable to use the roads we have already? So if elected I pledge to do everything I can to push the need for efficient regular bus services up the agenda. People are also concerned about the noise, damage, pollution and danger lorries and cars bring by storming through their villages. Investment in better bus services is a win win. It means people have the choice to leave their vehicles at home. That in turn lowers the number of cars on the road and lessens the noise, pollution, damage and danger of traffic for all village residents. Slower speed limits in villages, where people want them, and HGV weight restrictions on busy medieval streets such as Water Street in Lavenham, also create a win win, making villages walkable again, and so encouraging more people to walk to school or shop rather than drive. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, people are tired of a remote council run by a small coterie that makes decisions in secret, often without even a pretence of consultation. So if elected I pledge to listen to residents before making any decision and to do everything I can to hold the administration of the county council to account. I would urge people to think on May 4 before they vote for their usual party allegiance. This is a once in a four year opportunity to get some badly needed opposition on Suffolk County Council, to elect a voice to speak out for local people. Robert Lindsay, Green Party candidate for Cosford in the county council elections. Squirrels We have really enjoyed celebrating Science Week! We investigated the theme of 'Change' by exploring how our shadows changed during the day, we planted cress and have observed how the seeds have gradually changed, we had fun mixing cornflour and water to make slime and then we created our own musical instruments. Hedgehogs Hedgehogs Class have had a busy and exciting week of science related to our topic of castles. We started the week off by investigating the best material for armour. We have also made and tested catapults and bow and arrows, seeing how far we could get them to go. In Literacy we have used what we learned to write instructions about how to attack a castle. We are looking forward to our trip to Framlingham castle next week. Badgers It has been a fun filled Science Week in Badgers class! We started off the week by building electric circuits with our new science equipment. We investigated how adding in more batteries changed the circuit and also by adding in more items that drained the power supply. We have created lanterns of our year so far and thought about what opaque and translucent items we could use to make these. We are also promoting the importance of Honey bees. In our garden area we have planted Hollyhock seeds and created informative posters, so people understand why they need to be saved. We also got the chance to make some interesting bread. Some groups put in 6 times the amount of yeast and some added blue food colouring! Owls Owls have thoroughly enjoyed the last few weeks, preparing for their Mayan celebratory feast. We have devised our own game, based on hockey and the Mayan ball game of Pok t'Pok and the children are currently playing matches in group stages, ready to play the final at our feast. This week, Owls have also been lucky enough to visit BT Adastral Park, as part of British Science Week. While we were there, we found out about how we can use science, technology, engineering and maths in our day-to-day lives. We loved using the Virtual Reality headsets too! I CALLUSES I INGROWN

I CORNS I VERRUCAS

It is that time of year when the childhood excitement of Easter egg hunts and all the delicious sweet treats that come with it can make you feel like a child again for a while, especially if you can live vicariously through children, nieces, nephews or grandchildren. But despite re-living the fun of it all, I find that the thrill as an adult, no matter how delicious for the short term, does not last so long. In fact, feelings of overindulgence step in rather quickly and soon the mounds of chocolate that pile up around the place can feel a little too much, especially as there really is so much these days, and the eggs, bunnies and sundries have generally been falling off overstuffed shelves for months rather than days. But it occurred to me recently that as well as the excitement of an egg hunt, I think maybe there could be just as much fun to be had in another way – one in which the anticipation can be prolonged and shared with everyone from adults to children. This Easter, why not get some vegetable seeds planted out, have some fun together putting them in pots, making markers and then waiting and watching for them grow. The enjoyable hunt for them as they sprout up will be just as exciting as glimpsing a tin foil wrapper hidden amongst a box hedge and the best bit is – they keep coming. What could be better than tracking down your own, home-grown treasures and sharing them over and again with family and friends – the hunt could last all summer! jenny-may.com

Eye care for all ages at D J Dunstone

Michael Giles has been examining eyes in Hadleigh since he qualified as an optometrist ten years ago. Since then he has become an invaluable member of the team and provides eye examinations for all ages, from new born up until well over 100 years of age. Home visits are available for those who are unable to attend the Practice in Queen Street. This examination is available from D J Dunstone optometry at no charge for those entitled to an NHS test (e.g. age 60 or more), unable to attend the Practice unaccompanied and living in close proximity to Hadleigh. Michael carries out the majority of the home visits for the Practice. A thorough domiciliary examination is possible with portable equipment including, when appropriate, the latest portable visual field testing (Henson 7000) and indirect ophthalmoscopy (3D viewing of the back of the eye). Thorough feedback regarding the results of the tests is given and you are welcome to have a family member or friend in attendance during the visit. Although he is examining in Queen Street the majority of the time, Michael also attends The Ipswich Hospital eye clinic for two sessions each week where he is involved with paediatric, glaucoma and specialist contact lens clinics. It is recommended to bring children in for eye examination between the age of between 3 and 4 years of age or sooner should you suspect a problem with vision or if there is a family history of sight problems. Children of any age are welcome to be brought along for an NHS examination. Please see dunstoneinsight.com or telephone 01473 823755 for an appointment or information, including home visits or children’s eye care. Foster Care transforms lives

In the East of England there are hundreds of children in need of a loving, stable home. There are many factors that contribute to children being unable to live with their birth families; poverty, the breakdown of family relationships, substance abuse, domestic violence and the refugee crisis all play a role. Children who come into foster care are often confused and frightened and they desperately need a secure, loving environment to help them heal. With the right support foster carers offer the best chance of hope for a brighter fututre for these children. At EFS we work tirelessly to ensure that children flourish in foster familes. We go to great lengths to make sure that children and carers are well-matched and that every support is given to make the fostering experience a positive one for children and carers alike. We have seen many children transformed through foster care but we know that there are many more children who need that opportunity. Children come in all shapes and sizes with a variety of needs and they deserve carers who can meet those needs. We believe that for every child out there, there is a carer who is just right for them but the number of available carers falls far short of what is needed. If you’ve ever thought about fostering and want to make a difference in the life of a child, there has never been a time where the need is so great. EFS will be offering the opportunity for people to drop in to our coffee mornings, to meet the team and our carers and to find out more about fostering. New Beginnings This Spring

The obesity crisis is constantly in the news and is costing the NHS millions of pounds every year because of the many health issues it can cause or exacerbate. It’s incredible to think that bariatric surgery is frequently seen as the best, and sometimes only, option for many morbidly obese people when alternatives are available. Add to that the illnesses often attributed to obesity include hypertension (known as the silent killer because it has no obvious symptoms until, sometimes, it’s too late). Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis and sleep problems are all affected by obesity. Many overweight people also show some symptoms of depression. Keeping our weight at a healthy level is an amazing thing we can do for ourselves and the one thing that we all have control over. After all, shouldn’t we be responsible for looking after our own bodies? Eating a good, nutritionally balanced diet is the first step. Combined with regular exercise and you will soon start to feel the benefits - it’s known to boost serotonin levels - the feel-good factor. It’s so easy to find an excuse not to make the effort - but it can be squeezed into your daily routine almost without realising! You don’t need any special equipment - just step outside your front door for a brisk walk, aim to do 30 minutes a day if you can. If you have a dog he’ll be delighted to come with you! Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support. Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has 8 years’ experience, will provide individual support and motivation during your weight loss journey, so for help with your weight problem, contact her today on 01449 737113/07519 177645 or www.facebook.com/val.lord.cwp. Spring is in the air!

Longer days and brighter skies are now upon us meaning it's time to start in the garden again and perhaps think about a few interior projects to brighten up your home. Spring is most certainly in the air and there is nothing quite like a few pots or window box brimming with colourful plants to make you feel like Summer is now on the horizon! For a good selection of healthy, locally grown plants take a look at Bridge Farm Plants in Monks Eleigh. This lovely little plant centre is now in its fourth year at Bridge Farm Barns and its friendly staff are always happy to chat and help you out with any gardening queries. “When the plant centre re-opens in March it always brings so much colour to the outside of the site, and with the beautiful days that we are currently experiencing it certainly makes you want to get out into the garden!”, says Caroline Gage, owner of Bridge Farm Barns. “Our outside tables have now been reinstated on the terrace of the Corn Craft Tea Room so our customers can now sit and enjoy any Spring sunshine with a coffee and a cake!” Last year, Corn Craft opened a new “lifestyle & home” department which is full of gorgeous spring accessories for your home. “A new throw and a few pretty cushions can easily brighten up a room ,” says Caroline. “Our lifestyle shop has been really well received since we opened last June and is such a pleasure to buy for! We have some stunning new embroidered cushions now in with throws that tone in beautifully.” For more information on Bridge Farm Barns see www.bridgefarmbarns.co.uk or call 01449 740456

Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 22 (Spring 2017)

It was 80 years ago when King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother) were crowned at Westminster Abbey and Percy Finter was on hand to photograph the celebrations. Not the ones in London but those of the people of Bildeston, who planted a commemorative tree, held a parade of highly decorated floats through the streets and a grand party in Duke Hall. Thanks go to readers Oswold Simpson of Elmsett and Ray Clarke of Lavenham, who kindly lent their postcards. Another picture feature revisits Bildeston fire brigade and its Merryweather engine and the men of the village who served in the National Fire Service of World War II. Part of the probate procedure in days gone by was to accompany the will to court with an inventory of the deceased’s moveable goods. In the 1690s. two Bildeston publicans, whose premises adjoined each other, died within twenty months of each other and so, with the assistance of their inventories, we can look around their establishments. Both men were brewing and one was also a tenant of Copt Hall Farm. Smock Meadow Charity has always been a bit of a mystery and it would seem that all that is left now is the street name. Now its story is told: where the original Smock Meadow was located; who benefitted from the income and its current status. Den Bray of Lancashire wrote enquiring why his grandmother was baptised at St Mary’s Church when she was aged 2 and not as a baby. The answer would seem to be a problem with the rector. Den’s family later moved away from Bildeston but while the Taylors were here, their homes at Hall Farm by the church and in Chapel Street have been traced and a family tree going back to 1760 has been constructed. There are many more pieces in this season’s magazine: I do hope you enjoy it. Your letters, pictures and memories of Hadleigh and its surrounding countryside in the recent past and articles relevant to the town’s history are most welcome. Please contact Sue Andrews 01449 740673. Issue 22 is available from Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £3.

On Sunday, March 12th a record number of young Rugby Players transformed Hadleigh, Suffolk into the focal point of Mini-TAG rugby in Europe… and beyond.

Hadleigh – “Go on lad”!!

With 405 players The Hadleigh TAG 2017 smashed last year’s record of 330 players, an event which was officially recognised as the biggest Mini-TAG festival in The British Isles. Building on the success of previous years Hadleigh RFC welcomed 36 squads of both U-7s and U-8s from Braintree, Colchester, Woodbridge, Ipswich, Bishop’s Stortford, Chelmsford, Witham, Brightlingsea, Mistley, Sudbury, Bury St. Edmunds, Harwich, Stowmarket, Felixstowe, Ipswich YM as well as their own “Hadleigh Baa-Baa’s” to play some great rugby based on the RFU’s core values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship. To the cheers of over 800+ spectators, the First Whistle, blown by the Guest of Honour Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Nassé, Commanding Officer, 7 Aviation Support Battalion REME, Wattsisham, signalled the start of 90 games and a combined 15 hours of Mini-TAG, a non-contact form of rugby designed to help young boys and girls develop their fitness, technical skills and to experience the joy of playing the game. For many of the players and parents this was their first experience of a Rugby Festival and, judging by the smiles and laughter all round, it certainly won’t be their last. Hadleigh RFC would like to thank in particular the following organisations and individuals for their support without which the Festival would not have been possible: Celotex (U8s), Orwell Park School (U7s), The Hadleigh Thrift Shop, SCR Consulting, Gallagher Boilers, Royal Hospital School, Gladwell’s Pet and Country Stores, Fairfield Farm Crisps, Kersey Freight, Coes of Ipswich, Premier Education, Suffolk Fostering and Adoption Agency, Lt Col, Stuart Nasse 7th Aviation Support Btn Wattisham and the lads of the Royal Engineers, Steve Sargeant Contracts, MyIcon Branding and the ever-smiling Gina at the Hadleigh Business Centre. Festival Awards for Excellence were awarded to: Teamwork: Simon Carter and Mistley RUFC Respect: Harwich and Dovercourt RUFC Enjoyment: Chelmsford RFC Discipline: Brightlingsea RFC Sportsmanship: Bury St. Edmunds RUFC “The Hadleigh TAG is now an established, and much loved, cornerstone of grass-roots rugby in the Eastern Counties and we are proud to have welcomed so many teams and players from all across the region. The massive levels of support from the RFU and our local community demonstrate just how important The Hadleigh TAG is to the development of “Kids First” Rugby in the region” - Charlie Warburton, Chairman, Hadleigh RFC “It’s truly wonderful what we have here. What started off 4 years ago with just 9 clubs and 120 players has grown into a festival which gets messages of support from afar afield as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Our volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who has been involved today, have all played their part in putting Hadleigh and the Eastern Counties on the World Map of Rugby!” Marcus Gallagher, Youth Chairman, Hadleigh RFC For further information contact: Mick Collins, Fixtures Secretary Hadleigh RFC 07805 493246 mick.collins@scr-consulting.co.uk Photos courtesy Fred Collins c/o HRFC

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre

If I could cheer, I would whinny! Last month’s blog produced two new volunteers for our ground maintenance team. You both know who you are: my live pals in the fields all say a big thank you and we very much hope you enjoy being with us. The herd has been paddling about in mud for most of this term so its nice to hack out and dry off the legs. The picture shows some of the Friday riders enjoying a bit of fresh air and sunshine. Inside my room, where there is no mud at all, Babs has had her best treat in years. Dick Kirk, from Jim Lawrence Ironworks in Hadleigh, cleverly fashioned new handles for her that slot securely into a new base plate he made for her, so her riders can now feel super secure. (Her old handles wobbled about somewhat.) Then he fashioned a new neck for her detachable head. I am beginning to feel a tiny bit jealous but I guess its nice to see Babs looking so smart. She is used for our most disabled riders who would not be able to manage a ride on someone as big and powerful as me. The new horse, Bryn, is in work. He is strong, good mannered and moves well, Lyn is very pleased with him but has to teach him about the ramp where our riders mount. Bryn does not rate the experience very highly. By the way, his colour is ‘silver dun’, that’s a first for the Shelley Centre, I believe, and it’s a polite way of saying he has a donkey stripe along his back. I hope lots of you will be joining our fund raising team at the Races on April 29th. Its racing with a difference, in Nayland Village Hall, and if the thoroughbreds are half as funny as Rob’s frogs were last year, you will be in for a great evening. Our web page gives details, or you can ring my Aunty Di on 01473 658 552 to book tickets. Easter will be upon us soon, and the school holidays. We get a break too (except for the people who help Lyn care for the herd) so Babs and I will be switched off, locked up and left in peace. May I wish you peace and joy for your Easter too, and lots of chocolate perhaps? Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.htm. Telephone: 01473 824172

Hadleigh U3A

Hadleigh U3A offers a warm welcome to all members and prospective members at their next meeting at 2.30pm on Monday 10th April 2017 at the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh. The talk will be ‘An Introduction to Gemstones’ and will be given by Jason Middleton.

Telling the Easter Story through art

It’s the story at the heart of the Christian faith and now it is being told in an artistic way and put on show in Lavenham. The Parishes of Lavenham with Preston St Mary are launching their first ever Easter Art Trail which will see over 50 pictures on display in Lavenham for people to enjoy. The launch will take place at The Angel Hotel on 31st March with grateful thanks to the new owner, John Raynes, who will be providing refreshments. Pictures will be framed and exhibited in nearly all the shops and restaurants in Lavenham and people will be able to collect a special trail map and search out the colourful works of art. Whilst following the trail people will be asked to vote for their favourite entries. The trail runs from 1st to 13th April inclusive. Trail maps can be obtained from A J Heeks the Grocers, Lavenham Church, The Tourist Information Office, The Guildhall and the Library. Voting boxes can be found in these locations. All art will then be exhibited for one week in Lavenham church from 15th April - 22nd April. The two categories receiving the highest number of votes will win prizes and in addition, their work will be used to create greeting cards to be sold in the church shop to raise funds for Lavenham pre-school. People who vote will also go into a draw for prizes. The Rev’d Stephen Earl said: “This is a community event to bring all ages together in a creative and fun way. It’s also a good opportunity for the Easter message to reach everyone, whether artist, hosting business or indeed the people following the trail. We really want to encourage everyone to join in and be a part of this creative initiative!” www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

SKy Watch Questions and Answers

by Neil Norman

Well my friends, I have just passed my 3 year anniversary for writing this article. This is the 37th instalment and I would like to thank Kelvin Avis for allowing me to continue to post monthly and to each and everyone of you who have spoken so kindly about the article. This month I thought I'd answer a few questions I am often asked. Q:- Where can I see the Northern lights? A:- In perfect conditions one can view them from here, but if you want a higher chance, you're best to move North, Scotland is ideal. Q:- Is the asteroid belt a failed Planet? A:- The very basic answer is yes. The planet Jupiter has a massive gravitational effect on anything near it and thus has stopped the asteroids from forming a planet. Q:- What star will next turn into a supernova? A:- This cannot be predicted with certainly, but the best candidate is Betelgeuse in Orion. This star could literally blow itself to pieces at any time. When it does you'll soon know about it. Q:- What is the difference between 'red shift' and 'blue shift'? A:- These phenomenon relate to direction of motion of objects. When spectrum's of stars or galaxies is analysed, if it is 'blue shifted' it means the object is travelling towards us and 'red shift' means the object is receding away from us. Q:- What is more dangerous a Comet or asteroid? A:- Natural instinct screams " asteroid ", but the fact is Comet are pretty Lethal objects. Their size ( often several miles across ) and relative velocity to Earth means they can pack a nasty punch should they wish to collide with us. Q:- Did the Moon landings happen? A:- They most certainly did ! Nearly half a million people worked on this project I'm sure if it was faked we'd have known about it from a higher source at sometime in the last 48 years. Q:- The difference between Astronomy and Astrology? A:- Astronomy is a science and Astrology is. for want of better word, rubbish. Q:- Can ALL the planets be seen with the naked-eye? A:- No Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus can, but Neptune will need a pair of binoculars. Q:- Whats the most distant object one can see naked-eye? A:- The Andromeda galaxy is some 2 million light years away and can be seen easily with the eye alone. Q:- When will Halley's Comet come back? A:- Not until Summer 2062, and even then it wont be very bright from here. The Comet takes 76 years to orbit the Sun, and it's last two close approaches occurred in 1986 and 1910 respectively. Q:- Is there life on Mars? A:- Certainly it would have been possible in the distant past but proving it is most elusive. If it ever did exist there, it would have been in the microbial form. Q:- Your favourite planet? A:- I'll be greedy and answer Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter for its great red spot and cloud belts and Saturn for its rings. Q:- Why is Pluto not a planet? A:- In 2006 a group of Astronomers voted out Pluto as a planet due to the fact that it is a small world and lots of bigger objects have been found orbiting the Sun further out. Q:- How many stars can you see with the naked-eye? A:- Under perfect conditions, around 6,000 are visible to your eyes alone. Q:- Is astronomy an expensive hobby? A:- It will cost you want you want it to. A good telescope will cost hundreds of pounds, but a cheap pair of 10 x 50 binoculars will give you fantastic views also. Your level of dedication will govern how much you spend. And finally: Q:- Why was the last manned Moon mission in 1972? A:- Getting people to the Moon is expensive and the novelty of the Moon missions were off quickly after the U.S flag was placed there. By 1972 the general public were treating it like they did the same way as after a few shuttle missions in the 1980's. The funding to NASA for this couldn't be justified any longer and the goal was achieved, so the missions were cancelled. Until next month, clear skies. French’s Care Haven And Care Farm

What a difference a day makes in the sunshine. We have had a second visit from the V Team at Essex Uni, on a volunteer day. The picture is of one of their volunteers with my dog Lucy, Lucy did not have a good start to her life. I had been told about a place that was suspected of being a puppy farm and ask if I would investigate and report them, if I felt they were doing this despicable act. So I chose an 8 week old puppy they were advertising and went along to view. They tell you NOT to buy a puppy if you suspect they are puppy farmed, BUT a big but, that is easier said than done, when you see that innocent baby dog frightened out of its life because of its living conditions and them having to listen to the sound of angry caged up adult dogs barking through frustration of their confinement and the barking of those in distress around them, it is far from easy. It was impossible for me as an animal lover to walk away empty handed and do as advised, I just wanted to hang onto her for dear life, after she was man handled and thrown into my hands, that was before I had even got out of the car and while they were throwing her, saying “pay now in cash”. I ask to see her mother and they pointed at a timid shaking wreck of a cocker spaniel and when I ask about her father named on her paper work, they said they had forgotten who or where he came from, somewhere up north I was told. I thought at the time probably one of those angry caged up dogs in that dark shed! Once home I reported them straight away to two authorities and as you may have guessed I did not give her back. Once home it took some time for her to adjust and not run and hide, shaking if she heard a noise or a dog bark. I have showered her with love and having her come with me daily to French’s, working around all types of animals and people of all ages, she has become every ones favourite little girl. There is not a day that goes by where someone says to me “I have never met such a happy dog, she actually smiles” bless her she loves a good huge too! I am looking for a book keeper/accountant, so a big shout out to anyone possibly semi-retired who has a spare couple of hours every month or (20hrs) if you want to get some wellies on and get your hands dirty at our sanctuary. In the ideal world you will have a mind for figures but a passion for the outdoors and animals. Because our small charities lacks money at the moment and is crying out for new sponsors and hands on help, you will not be on a salary, but this is what you will help, a wonderful charity that has a love of nature, the country side and most of all the animals around us. Please call me if you are interested, or pass this news letter on to someone who you think would be able to help. We also have a 16hh gelding to loan to a good home, he is a nice gentle boy who hacks out alone or in company. Boris is 6 years old and wants to go out and have some fun. Please call for further details, or look on our face book page Frenchs equine rehabilitation centre/ Frenchs care haven, for pictures of him and more info. Hadleigh Cycling Junior Club

The Junior Club has started for the 2017 season. The sessions run on Wednesday evenings (18:00-19:00) at Hadleigh High Leisure Centre. After the Easter holidays the sessions move onto the field (19th April onwards). Juniors can be from 4 years of age to 15. Children simply need to be able to ride their bikes unaided. The session cost is £3 for nonmember and £2 for members. Simon King, the Club’s Secretary said, “Gale and Grace have completed their Level 2 certificates and will greatly enhance our coaching team.” The Club is keen to get the views of existing and potential members via the Survey Monkey website. The majority of respondents to date want to join a Club ride and meet other cyclists. Currently the Club is running gentle social rides starting at 8am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Ladies, gents and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. The Club’s Annual Subs night in the George attracted plenty of new members keen to take advantage of this year’s special offer. All members are entitled to purchase any item of club kit at half-price. The Club membership is £10 for individuals and £30 for family membership. For more information on the Club visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.org or email or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Good Evans! It’s an Oval Ball on The Tee

Newton Green’s new captain Gareth Evans hit his first drive 209 yards down the fairway, but not with a rugby ball. The former Sudbury Rugby Club winger who played in the club’s National Division Three glory days more than 25 years ago posed with a rugby ball on the tee before hitting his drive-in tee shot. He elected not to strike the oval ball, but hit a conventional ball down the middle. This was unlike his wife Rebecca, who went out of bounds when carrying out a similar task a few days earlier when she became Newton’s women’s captain. It is the first time in the 110 year history of the club a married couple has served in the same year as captains. Since relinquishing his main business interests two years ago, Gareth has reduced his handicap from 14 to seven. Retiring captain Lee Prentice putted out on the 18th green before handing over to his successor.

Newton Green Raises £6,000 For Charity

Newton Green Golf Club has just completed a year during which more than £6,000 was raised for charity. Most of the money - £5,934 - was handed over at a recent general meeting to the Kernos Centre, Sudbury, which is a nonprofit making charity providing professional counselling and psychotherapy to children and adults.

Trophy Winners collect awards at Newton Green Golf Club

An experiment to get more trophy winners to turn up for the club’s annual presentations proved a success at Newton Green Golf Club. A Sunday morning nine-hole friendly encounter involving men’s and mixed competition winners during the year meant an increased turn-out, compared with holding the presentation as part of a winter evening annual meeting.
