Ladies Night in memory of Rebecca Phillips Wow! What a response we have had from the people of Hadleigh, from ticket sales to donations and to the amazing raffle prizes. We are not surprised as the event is in memory of such an amazing woman. We promise this ladies evening will be a success and a fitting event full of fun and pampering. We have now sold out of the tickets we are so sorry to let people down but we are at the full capacity for the school. On that note we would like to thank Mr Frolish of St Mary's CEVP Primary school for allowing us to use the school for the evening. We have been extremely pleased with the generousity of the local businesses we thank you all for all the kind donations, they have been gratefully received and will truly help our fund raising to be a triumph. The support that has been received is overwelming. As for the evening itself you can look forward to a host of stalls including Avon, Bodyshop, Butterfly Cupcakes, Sparkle by Heather, Pretty Chic at Home, Pampered Chef, Taggies, Snowflake Jewellery, Roses to Ribbons, Touch of Beauty, The Hair Lounge, Vie at Home, Sweet Memories, Phoenix Trading, HollowTrees Farm Shop We also have Adnams who will be there to provide some wine tasting for all us ladies, with plenty of bottles to buy to take home too. R.I.P. Percy the Peacock Returning home one day in September 1996 some of our neighbours were out on the road gazing up at the roof of our house. “You have a visitor” they said. Looking up, we saw a very large bird on the ridge - our first sight of the peacock that quickly acquired the name Percy. Where he came from, noone knew. The local vet and the RSPA were contacted and both said that it would be impossible to catch him without harming him, and that it would be best to just leave him, and he might move on again. But he did not move on. He seemed to want to settle in the Watermill Close and Brett Green area. Impressive, he certainly was; Beautiful plumage, definitely, especially when he made his full display; Handsome, Oh yes! …and always something to amaze visitors. However there were disadvantages. The screeching mating call at 4.00am in May, his liking for a carefully nurtured tomato crop when still green on the stalk, his taste for the buds of newly planted petunias. Then there was the smelly muck he left on paths and steps. BUT love him or hate him there is no denying that Percy the Peacock was part of Layham for over fourteen years. The freezing temperature on the night of 20th/21st December (-10c) was too much for him as it was for countless smaller birds. We found him on the drive in the morning, lying in the snow, his feathers still beautifully brilliant against all the whiteness. Many will miss him despite his faults.

Semer Airgun Society

On 4th January the Society held its annual Golden Pellet Competition, This competition we usually run the last meeting in December but due to bad weather we had to postpone the meeting. The rules of this competition every competitor has to use one of two rifles that are provided by the society on this occassion the rifles where break barrel .177cal.with open sights. Each competitor standing unsupported has 6 shots at 1 x10 metre target and scores with the best 5, with the maximum possible score 50 points. This is a very skill testing competition as those taking part will not be familiar with the guns charicteristics. 25 members took part and the outcome was very interesting with some 40+ scores, 2 competitors however Bill & Duncan scored 44 points each. To decide on an outright winner they shot 2 more targets each, after the first target they drew on points again with 41 scored each but on the second target Bill scored 40 and Duncan a magnificent 48 points out of a possible 50 thus making Mr Duncan Selby the winner of THE GOLDEN PELLET award for 2010. This trophy is held by the winner for one year. All those who took part received a prize. After the competition we had some light christmas refreshments. On behalf of all the society members would like to thank everyone who donated prizes and made THE GOLDEN PELLET competition such a success. 2011 started well with the afore mentioned competition but then with the bad weather forcing some of our members to stay at home attendances fell to 10 per evening but things have picked up again now and we are seeing between 15 to 25 members each week again. Its nice to report all our membership is still growing especially our juniors and I’ve noticed some new guns have appeared at the meetings this year, perhaps chrismas presents I’m thinking? Our 2011quarterly competitions are now under way, and this year we have added a pairs competition. Taking part in the society competitions is NOT a compulsory part of Semer Airgun Society membership, we are a friendly group of airgun enthusiasts both male and female from all walks of life and of all abilities, our motto is SAFE AND SOCIABLE so if you feel you might like to join us why not visit us, we meet at Semer Village Hall every Tuesday evening 7.30 pm to 9.30pm you will be most welcome T Sanger (President)

Over indulged at Christmas and New Year? Feel fat and unhealthy? It’s that time of year when we all promise ourselves we will get fit and healthy this year, we will lose those extra pounds and we will join a gym and keep going beyond March. Each year we make these resolutions and fail. Will this year be any different? Lets face it. Most of us are overweight because we eat too much and exercise too little and not because of some underlying medical condition. Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is so important to our overall health – it reduces our risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers such as breast cancer and prostrate cancer. A good way to check if you are overweight is to use the BMI or Body Mass Index. Why not log onto are website at www.millpharmacy.co.uk and use our BMI calculator to work out your BMI? If you don’t have a computer our staff at Mill Pharmacy will be happy to calculate it for you. A score of over 25 means that you are overweight. Our website will also provide links to Slimming World, Weight Watchers and other weight management sites where you will be able to glean useful information on eating healthily and losing weight. However, it is not suitable for everyone as it can interact with some medicines and is also contraindicated in certain medical conditions. If you want to know if Alli is suitable for you why not book a FREE confidential appointment with our pharmacist who will also be able to give you professional advice on calorie controlled diets and various forms of exercise. People with a BMI of over 30 can also obtain free vouchers for slimming world for 12 weeks. Just pop along to the pharmacy to find out how. Jerry’s Diary

Giffords Park flood, drawn in 2004 The Waxwings seen in Hadleigh at the end of December brought my local patch list for 2010 to 118 species of birds seen in the area. Not beating the 131 seen during 2002. The Giffords Park site helped in getting that high species list. 110 bird species I saw at Giffords in 2002, waders put in a good show during that autumn, Ruff, Pectoral Sandpiper, Woodsandpiper, Spotted Redshank, Little Stint, Jacksnipe and Knot. Little Gull, Artic and Black Tern, Osprey and Marsh Harrier and a pair of Garganey Ducks. Away from Giffords I found a female Bufflehead (a North American Duck) at Layham Pits, in Aldham Long Eared Owls and a Bufflehead at Layham Pits Short Eared Owl were also seen. The Little Egret and Buzzard were still rare birds in 2002 so seeing both those species in 2002 made that year one of my highlights of my local patch. Lower Brett Valley 16th January: 800+ Wigeon, 400+ Teal, 170+ Pintail (a site record), several Shoveller, Shelduck, Mallard, only 2 Gadwall, 2 Tufted Duck, 2 Little Grebe, 4 Egyptian Goose, Greylag and Canada Geese, 100+ Lapwing. Again a Peregrine Falcon was seen preening at the waters edge, not short of food with all these wildfowl here. How many Waxwing have you seen in the area? I can be contacted by email: jerry@keithavis.co.uk Jerry Oxford

Howard with his 1989 Mercedes SL and Dyson vaccum I am sure that my readers are perplexed as to why I should be featured balancing on the front of my Mercedes and gripping a Dyson vacuum cleaner. I know that nothing surprises you though. At Christmas, one of my retinue of household staff was mowing my carpets with the Dyson turbo charged head when the Dyson became distinctly under the weather. I was horrified that the cost of a replacement would be £230 and more. Like you, I am watching the pennies. Who wants to spend that on a vacuum cleaner – after all, as a good friend said “you can’t wear it”. I was lucky enough though to come across a man in a tiny shop in Ipswich who operates on Dysons; for £65 my Dyson is back to full health with a new motor and indeed I bought a re-conditioned one for £75 to use in some flats under management. If, dear readers, you are afflicted with grinding in your bearings, a floppy hose or lack of suction then call Cliff Lane Electrical on 01473 230447. And what of my Mercedes 300SL. Well, I am re-aligning my collection of cars to make a little more room in the motor house. I have decided to give my readers the opportunity to acquire my Mercedes. It is charcoal grey with grey leather interior and mohair hood; they used to use this model in the Dallas series. If you are interested in purchasing the convertible then do get in touch. My chauffeur, Frank, would be delighted to show you over the car. Just the thing for some Spring days that are around the corner. One of my clients recently could not believe that one could only conduct the affairs of another after they have lost mental capacity if a Lasting Power of Attorney is in place. Failing that one has to pursue the more complicated and expensive route of requesting the Court to appoint a Deputy. There is no automatic authority. We are preparing a fair number of Lasting Powers of Attorney which can bring unforeseen complications if not handled properly. Everyone should have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place so do make an appointment to come to discuss the issue. When selling part of a parcel of land that you own, the Land Registry require us to present a scale-plan and usually clients will have to have that professionally drawn. Gone are the days when we could draw something up and the Land Registry did the rest. Howard Gibbons

Telephone Community News on 01473 823366

Hello readers, and welcome to this month’s edition of news from the Police Station. We are now in that time of year when many of us would have made (and broken) New Year’s resolutions. I know many of us would have looked to increase exercise, eat or drink less, or even look to save money for important purchases. After all, it is not uncommon for us to make resolutions that affect us personally, and forget others. For the next 12 months, I ask for us all to widen the field, and think about what we can do to help ourselves, and the community. I would like to see more people leaving their cars at home when they only need to pop out for a loaf of bread or a pint of milk. This would alleviate the congestion in the High Street, reduce pollution, free up parking spaces in the car parks and reduce the need for motorists to abuse the single yellow lines in the street. In turn this would free up our time and we could concentrate our patrol time on dealing with wider community issues, rather than issuing parking tickets. I would like to see dog walkers take more responsibility for their animals. We know that some dogs are over friendly, or even pose a threat to people or other animals. If you know you have a dog in this category, please keep it on a lead. Whilst reported incidents of dog bites are low, we have seen a steady increase over the years and we do prosecute owners who do not take proper control of their animals. On a similar tone, we have noticed that dog fowling continues to be a problem around the Town. It does not take long to pick the excrement up in a bag and dispose of it in one of the many dog bins around the Town. It is unacceptable to leave the mess for someone else to walk in, and just as unacceptable to place the faeces into a bag and leave the bags in open spaces. On the spot fines can be issued to owners by us or the Council, and whilst the bags are generally cheap to buy, we have a large supply at the Police Station free of charge for those who would like to pop in and collect some. I would also like to see us all take an active part in helping reduce anti-social behaviour around the Town. Many of us have the ability to engage with sections of the community who are either the victims or culprits of persistent ASB. Some of you may have the resources to help the regular offenders with diversionary activities, or might be able to get involved with the Porch Project at St Mary’s Church, or even the Hadleigh Entertainment’s committee. Making a small contribution can have a big impact for the whole community. We have a very respectful youth community in the Town, but many of them are bored. Whilst we continue to work with our partners on a regular basis to reduce the issues, antisocial behaviour is a social problem. Whether you are a parent or a teenager, young or old, you might have the skills to help draw the community together, and I ask anyone interested in helping in the community to contact me at the Police Station. It is worth reminding you all that these may often seem like small problems, but we are tasked as a team to investigate every community issue brought to us, and to find solutions where possible. If we all put a little bit more thought into our daily activities, your Safer Neighbourhood Team could spend their time on more pressing priorities. The next Safer Neighbourhood Team priority setting meetings are on Wednesday 16th February 2011 at Hadleigh High School, and Wednesday 16th March 2011 at East Bergholt High School, both start at 7.30pm and are open for all residents in the Babergh East area to attend. As ever, I am always open to invitations, questions, and comments and ask that you contact me on the details below. Until next time, Matt PC 1455 Paisley Matthew.paisley@suffolk.pnn.police.uk www.safersuffolk.org.uk

Bringing London buyers to the countryside Hadleigh estate agents, Morton Smith & Sands, are demonstrating just how seriously they take the responsibility of marketing properties in Hadleigh and the surrounding area, by establishing an office in London. “We are delighted to have representation in London,” say James Morton-Smith and Lee Sands of Morton Smith & Sands. “We see this as a positive move in developing even stronger links within the national and international property market.” “Hadleigh and the surrounding area have always Annette Reeve attracted a large number of purchasers from London and the home counties. This area is especially popular with families escaping the overcrowded comparatively expensive city and suburbs, downsizers, second home-owners and retirees. An office in London is a natural step for us in providing an even better local service. From London we will be concentrating on achieving the maximum coverage for our clients’ properties and we will also be strengthening further our connections with the best London based relocation companies,” they explain. Nick Churton The Mayfair Office in Thayer Street, just 5 minutes’ walk from Oxford Street, is ideally situated in the heart of the West End. “By establishing an office at such a good London address, we can ensure that buyers are introduced to us at the very start of their property search,” say James and Lee “We are often asked by vendors about marketing in London. Now with an office in the West End, we can proudly say we are Hadleigh and the surrounding area’s London agent!” they say. The Mayfair Office is headed by Nicholas Churton, one of the foremost London based Susan Hawkins marketing experts for country property, Trained by Chestertons in London, Nicholas went on to establish the London office of a national firm of agents and is the only estate agent to have held the position of property advertising manager at Country Life magazine. For details on how Morton Smith & Sands and their new London office can introduce house sellers to a wider market, please call James Morton-Smith and Lee Sands on 01473 828121, or Nick Churton in London on 020 7467 5333.

Welcome to this months Police news item. I have been asked recently how the cut in funding will be affecting Suffolk Police. I hope the following will give you some insight. Suffolk is a low cost force, but in line with police forces across the county, we are facing an unprecedented financial situation. We are facing a cut in funding of an estimated £18 million over the next four years, (from October 2010). We are already an extremely efficient force with one of the lowest costs per head of population and 300 fewer people than the average of our most similar forces. Suffolk Police Authority members and Constabulary Chief Officers will be attending District and Council meetings to share plans on how the force plans to meet the required efficiency savings whilst continuing to provide an excellent policing service. The Constabulary is operating a recruitment freeze for both officers and staff, and the Business Support Review is approaching the implementation phase of creating shared support units with Norfolk Constabulary. This will provide collaborative support to our frontline services, achieving savings of an estimated £9.8million over 4 years. The Constabulary is working in partnership with Suffolk County Council to buy and share two properties in Ipswich to help reduce costs while improving service delivery. As a result of this, the Constabulary will be able to sell off premises including Ipswich Police Station, which face multi-million pound refurbishment bills in the future. The project will save £200,000 per year for the Constabulary and is being progressed now because both property costs and borrowing are low. Crime Reduction Advice: Protect your Shed & Garage by following these simple steps… • Fit a strong hasp and staple secured to the door and frame with coach bolts reinforced on the inside with washers. Use a good quality closed shackle padlock. • Door hinges should also be secured with coach bolts reinforced on the inside with washers. • Windows can be secured and obscured by fitting internal bars or grille and net curtains. • Keep doors and windows locked. • Fit additional locks to up and over garage doors. • A battery operated audible alarm can be used to deter intruders. • Security mark items of value with your postcode and house number or name. Do not leave valuable equipment unattended. • Install external lighting with Dusk to Dawn automatic sensors. • Expensive items should be chained to a ground anchor or post securely fitted to the floor. • Photographs of expensive items, a record of their model and serial number will assist in their recovery if stolen. Many of you who have read my past Blogs will be aware that two of our horses, namely Strikey and Kerry, have recently left the Herd and the Shelley Centre for good. For the important work to continue at the Centre, helping both new and existing Riders, who rely upon us as a means of socialising and enjoying themselves as well as receiving invaluable therapy, it is vital that we replace them as soon as possible. This important task falls upon our Stable Manager Lyn. “That’s easy” I can hear you say; with so many horses looking for new homes during these difficult times she is fending offers off at the gate. Well……No! It’s not that easy. How do I know? You should be able to guess by now, yes, I was ear wigging from my room the other day when Lyn was talking with Jan Derbyshire and Margaret about replacing our loyal and faithful friends. When looking for a new member of the Herd we have to consider the needs of our Riders first and foremost therefore, any horse or pony coming to the Centre must be of a suitable age and with a good temperament, kind and generous, used to socialising and well schooled with nice forward paces: remember; they will become part of “The Shelley Centre Family”. Many new members joining the Herd come to us on loan or if we are fortunate, on permanent loan, where they will enjoy a home for life and of course the Centre will also purchase the right horse or pony. The Centre by its very nature is a place for socialising, as much for the Herd as the People, in that activities are varied from walking with our Riders in the Arena whilst they undertake various tasks to practicing for special events such as our annual Open Day, Regional and National Competitions or taking our Riders on cross country rides. When off duty, the Herd enjoy the use of many paddocks and because the Centre overlooks the beautiful Brett Valley can often be seen, between grazing and hanging out together, watching other activities around them: hacking out with able bodied riders through the beautiful Suffolk countryside ensures they have plenty of exercise too. As you can well imagine, the Herd gets special attention from everyone with both Rider and Helper forming a special bond with their mount, although all of the Herd enjoy a cuddle because our Riders love the horses and ponies and look forward to this element during their regular visit to the Centre: Naturally, being a “Mechanical Horse” you would think that I don’t get any cuddles like the real horses and ponies but, I do, I get a pat, a hug and a polish too so I’m not left out. Looking out from my room as I go into shutdown, it’s nice to know that the rest of the Herd are having fun and enjoying their comfortable life at the Centre. Red Poll are a cattle breed native to Suffolk and as you can see from the photograph enjoy a very comfortable and happy life! One of the Bower House Herd in Grown slowly and naturally by their winter quarters grazing in pastures for the majority of the year and then coming into comfortable winter housing with plenty of straw during the colder months the Red Poll produces delicious beef renowned for its flavour and tenderness. We visit the farm regularly to select cattle and to enjoy some of Alan’s hospitality! Of course don’t forget our Lamb which is sourced just down the road at Little Wenham where Bob Wilden, a proper shepherd with a dog and crook provided us with a fun afternoon helping to feed, select and load his lambs, so we know exactly how he goes about things - and its impressive. We also have without a shadow of doubt the best pork in the entire world - then we would say that because we produce some of it ourselves at Polstead! Our pigs live the life of riley in their huge enclosures and luxury accommodation where they spend their days wandering about wooded areas snuffling about and enjoy a mixed diet and lots of tickles behind the ears. We also regularly supply free-range pork from Blythboro. Call in to see us, Sam or Charlie, at our High Street Butchers and enjoy quality local meat with low food miles whilst supporting local businesses. Melanie’s Minding is a home based, Ofsted registered, childminding service located just outside Hadleigh in Upper Layham. I was born in Ipswich and, some thirty five years later, having settled with my family in Layham, I am pleased to be able to offer my home and care for children of all ages, from birth, through the early years and to pre school and beyond. Full and part time places are currently available. I also offer before and after school drop off and pick up for children at St Mary’s Primary school. As a mother (and personal secretary to a Member of Parliament in a previous life!), I understand the demands of meeting a happy home and work life balance – as a childcare provider I will work with parents to support their needs whilst catering to their children’s learning and development in a warm, loving and fun-filled environment. Relevant qualifications are important and reassure parents of the standard of childcare their children can expect to receive from me. I have a Diploma in Childhood and Youth Studies and am fully qualified in paediatric first aid. Ofsted require me to be appropriately trained in providing home based childcare to include aspects in safeguarding children and food hygiene. All of this and I am an expert with a glue stick and in the making of chocolate crispie cakes! Outdoor play and adventure form a large part of the daily routine – with a large and exciting garden to explore and the wonderful countryside just outside the front door, wellie walks, bug hunting and nature trails are a must. Working with local families, creating links with other childcare providers and offering a professional, personal and high quality service, I hope that if you are looking for a childminder, or know someone that is, that you will be in touch with Melanie’s Minding. Fidelis Lunch Bunch at Bridge Farm Barns Being able to combine a light lunch with some retail therapy, in one place and not far from Hadleigh, had a definite appeal to several Fidelis ladies. So it was on a wet, dismal day that a small group of Fidelians headed for Bridge Farm Barns (formerly Corn Craft) to forget the miserable weather and enjoy the tasty home cooking on offer in their tea room. With a wide range of dishes on the menu there was something for the famished, dieters, vegetarians and healthy diners. If the first course didn’t fill all the gaps, or you happen to have a particularly sweet tooth, there are always plenty of high calorie naughties to satisfy. Sadly, no one succumbed to that temptation. However, having enjoyed a leisurely lunch without over indulging, the diners were tempted to look at and buy the gifts, novelties, and cards displayed on two levels of the same barn. The Lunch Bunch looks forward to discussing everything under the sun at a different venue in a few months time. Jan Devey

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Would anyone believe the rapt attention Claire Horne got from the membership of Hadleigh and District Garden Club on Monday 10th January on the subject of “Garden Pests and Diseases”! It was clear that everything she mentioned chimed with us all and you could have heard a pin drop as this highly experienced speaker gave us the benefit of that experience. Claire started working at the bottom of the gardening spectrum, working first for Nottcuts, then Wyvale and moving onwards and upwards to being part of the research team for Gardening Which and now works for herself freelance. Her encyclopaedic knowledge of bugs, beetles, moulds rusts, galls and all things bent on frustrating us gardeners, or not in some cases, was truly inspirational and largely encouraging as she assured as that many of the problems were more to do with the health of the plant than the actual ”pest” itself and that generally speaking it is weak and struggling plants that succomb to complaints - rather like us humans. It was a fascinating, instructional talk accompanied by a most sophisticated system of terrific visuals showing the various problems down to the truly minute beasties, pests, moulds and rusts. There followed a lengthy question and answer session, in fact poor Claire was virtually the last to leave as the questions kept coming as she was trying to pack-up. She did emphasise that the best pest control was the thumb and finger in close proximity to said pest. Next months talk is on “Trees for Small Gardens” on 14th February and is the last for the present season as the March meeting will be the AGM on 14th March. News from the Garden Personal Thoughts I am a sucker for trying to grow unusual plants, particularly house plants. Sometimes my efforts result in beautiful interesting plants, other times in abject failure. Some years ago at a church fete I acquired a fairly insignificant specimen labelled "Ludisia - orchid grown for its foliage". None of my collection of reference books told me much about it, a lot did not even admit its existence. Even my RHS dictionary (1951 edition) did not recognise it. It was actually there called Anoectochilus discolor, but it is now called Ludisia discolor. Anyway the plant has magnificently coloured leaves to which photographs do not do justice because of their velvety surface, and for some years the plant has continued to exist without doing anything spectacular. about 3 weeks ago I noticed that the plant was producing new growth and I was not sure whether it was shoots, or flower spikes. The plant now bears 8 spikes of exquisite small white flowers. This was a total surprise and a bit Ludisia of cheer in these dull days. I am hoping that this does turn out to be one of those plants that die after flowering. I have in my possession a silver cup that was awarded to my grandfather when he was head gardener to a Bristol merchant. A lot of newspapers have now been digitised and made available on the internet, and I have the report on the show where he won it. The show was in March 1883, and the class was for a display of pot plants in a space 14 feet by 4 feet. The display included azaleas, heaths, imantophylliums, tulips, cinerarias, bouvardias, and camelias. Just imagine the number of greenhouses that would be necessary, the energy involved in heating them, and the work involved in having all those different plants in peak condition for one day in mid March. Now we worry about whether or not we are justified in keeping one modest greenhouse frost free. On the other hand our houses are better heated now, and this makes it possible to grow a fair selection of interesting house plants indoors. Weather Records With the December figures we have come to the end of another year of weather statistics. The December rainfall was 25.4 mm (1") making the total for the year 544.6 mm (21.4"). This is over 3" less than the average since 1998. The dry period in 2010 which caused this deficit ran from March to June. The one really wet month was August. The running 3 month figure at the end of December was 133.9 mm (5.3"). This is a little bit below average, but the rain early in January is virtually certain to ensure that next month we shall be above average. The maximum temperature in December was 9 Cel (48F) which was a bit lower than normal. The minimum temperature was -12 Cel (10F) this is the lowest temperature that Kate Banks has recorded. The December minimum was obviously the lowest for the year. The maximum temperature for 2010 was the 30 Cel (86F) that occurred in July. Ground Temperature in mid January was 5 Cel (41F) which shows that it has recovered quite well since December. The question now is whether or not we shall get another really cold spell. Hints February is the time to stir oneself and get cracking. One should:(a) Sow the early seeds of both flowers and vegetables for example for flowers with protection lobelia, antirrhinum, petunia, begonia and sweet peas, and for vegetables with protection lettuce & cabbage, and outside broad beans. (b) Acquire seed potatoes (Partridge have theirs in stock. This year's Potato Day is on February 12 at Stonham Barns.) (c) Finish tidying up, and cleaning pots greenhouse etc. (d) Clear weeds in the vegetable area, but DO NOT tread on saturated ground and ruin the soil structure. (e) Enjoy the snowdrops and early flowering shrubs like jasmine nudiflora, lonicera fragrantissima, viburnum bodnantense, prunus subhirtella and chimonanthus praecox John Rye

Dear Sir

Please write to: Kelvin Avis 68 High Street, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF or email: kelvin@keithavis.co.uk

Dear Sir With reference to Councillor Brian Riley’s letter in the January edition, I wonder sometimes if the council is even aware of the terms of the gifting of East House to the people of Hadleigh by the Stiles sisters, Diana and Penelope. I am informed that the property was originally used by West Suffolk County Council, who have in turn returned it to Babergh District Council. But are the original wishes of the Stiles sisters now being ignored by the council for short term financial gain? Robert Gales

Dear Sir I have just read the full RETAIL IMPACT ASSESSMENT which has been produced (by whom I do not know, but it seems very heavily biased towards saying Yes to Tesco) to assist in the determination of the Planning Application made by Tesco Stores Ltd for a supermarket on the Brett Works site and adjoining land. The full report can be read by going online at http://planning.babergh.gov.uk and typing in B/08/00311 in the Application number box and scrolling down to the Report dated 17/12/2010. The assumption that there will not be an unacceptable effect on local traffic levels and congestion because 80% of the urban population lives within a 15 minute walk of the site, and 100% live within a 20 minute walk, is fanciful to say the least. The assumption appears to rely on the fact that a significant proportion of the urban population would walk or use a non-car mode of transport to travel to the site of the new store in order to carry out their bulk food shopping. This scenario is completely unrealistic. Do the authors of the report seriously expect us to accept that ANYONE - be they young and fit, mothers with children, or older people - in the 21st century is likely to attempt to walk for up to 20 minutes carrying several bags of shopping from the shop site to their homes? Likewise, we are expected to believe that attempting to carry several bags of bulky, heavy shopping is safe on a bicycle? By the way, I think I just saw something large and pink flying past my window! Inevitably there would be a sharp INCREASE in the number of short car journeys within the urban area which would cause congestion and carbon emissions, as short slow journeys cause more emissions that longer journeys carried out at faster speeds to alternative superstores in Ipswich or elsewhere. The routes to the Brett Works site from the populated areas within the town would become even more congested than at present. The present system works by taking cars OUT of the town instead of INTO it. It is disputable that the existing food shops are "merely performing a top-up role", as claimed in the report. For many people the CO-OP is where they purchase all of their bulk shopping needs. Many people purchase all of the baking provisions at Greggs Bakers shop. The two Butcher shops fulfil many shoppers meat requirements. It is downright misleading to claim that in the main the existing High Street shops only cater for "top up shopping" It is also highly probable that if the shoppers of Hadleigh performed their bulk shopping at a new superstore, they would also do their top up shopping at the same store, which provides them with free off street parking instead of having to try and find a parking spot on the High Street or a nearby car park. Owen Neary

Dear Sir How good it was to read the report from Andrea Neary (Community News, December 2010) in praise of the service received from Hadleigh Tyres. Hadleigh is so fortunate in having so many independent traders and retailers in and adjacent to the High Street. The ‘Wye Valley & Valley of Usk’ tourism brochure 2010 commends and thanks their independent retailers who keep their High Streets vibrant. I quote: “Thanks in no small part to a bunch of hard-working shopkeepers our High Streets are very much alive... characterised by names you won’t have seen elsewhere. All offer a personal service... Every purchase in an independent shop contributes to the viability of a business. Each successful business adds to the vibrancy of our town...” This really is the sentiment that should be echoed by all shoppers & customers of the shops & businesses in Hadleigh. M.J. Nicholls 18

Ref. Tesco Application No B/08/00311/FUL Why? When three quarters of Hadleigh residents have voted against the Tesco proposals on this site. Is so much effort and money being wasted on this totally ill conceived project? Why a suitable site near the by pass (which was built to stop congestion in Hadleigh) with good access and parking is not selected is beyond sensible reason. With the billions they turnover Tesco could buy back the the Buyrite site with out a blip on their balance sheet. The old Brett Works is not the place for Tesco unless it was a small (well designed)Tesco Xpress, which may not be objected to by the majority? Especially if it allowed people to park and also use our local shops. The remaining area would make a wonderful market place like Sudbury which encourages local Crafts and Fair. And with the benefit of beautiful walks by the river Brett many visitors would be attracted to see the mostly hidden Hadleigh Heritage buildings in that area. Maybe then Hadleigh as a true Market Town would gain something from this debacle. The proposed site will not only cause traffic chaos and pollution but an entrance by a bridge on a bend would never be allowed by anybody else other than Tesco? The next thing they will be dreaming up is to knock down buildings in the High Street to gain access! So apart from the other Historic conservation and environmental issues as a (same as everywhere else) tin shed with of course the obligatory illuminated sign being built next to some of the loveliest old buildings in Suffolk is mindless. There also appears to be issues with flooding and safety? And who is going to climb up and retrieve the plastic bags from the trees (view the bushes round Tesco Copdock) and fish the trolleys out of the river? I married into a Hadleigh family moving from Ipswich 25 years ago to a lovely small town with pubs, shops and a vibrant community. Unlike Ipswich my home town which has lost its identity and looks a total sprawl now, when compared to Norwich and Colchester who have made huge efforts to blend the old with the new. Hadleigh our family’s town has not lost its charm or identity yet? But what of Hadleigh if this project goes ahead, what a catastrophe for High Street business and a blot on the landscape of this historic town the people of Hadleigh deserve originality not conformity. Many would argue that money should not be wasted on this Tesco Fiasco but spent on encouraging small businesses and helping the workforce and people of Hadleigh with their real needs. Many seem to be bowing down to the might of big business, the word is that Tesco are coming and nothing can be done about it. It’s just a matter of time? So the question must be asked why have Tesco been encouraged when a simple NO not here would have been the correct decision at the earliest stages. Lets face it, a previous similar development was turned down on the same site and nothing had changed since. To then spend all this time and wasted effort to find that 73% of Hadleigh residents do not want this site built on by Tesco shows a sad lack of communication and understanding of, Hadleigh and its residents and their needs. A more suitable area as mentioned before could satisfy all parties and bring back Tesco to Hadleigh. So what has been done to encourage this common sense policy? Or are there issues and past arrangements that we the public are unaware of? Transparency, honesty and democracy is the only solution to this unnecessary blight and I am truly concerned for all the hard working fair minded council members and staff who serve our Babergh community who will find themselves under the storm cloud of hostility which is looming large over this project. Peter Marsh

Dear Sir All my thanks, once again, to Mr and Mrs Whymark who were kind enough to pick up my bag that I had clumsily dropped in the High Street just before Christmas, returning it to me safe and sound. C. Scott Fox, Layham

Dear Sir I have something to say, If you are unwell, who do you see? In many cases your GP. If your Laptop PC is unwell, tired, and in need of a pickup, who could you see ? How about Neil Bevis, I did, you will find him on one of the pages in your monthly Hadleigh Community News. You will find Neil to be a nice chap, and very helpful, with any PC problem you may well have, my PC is happy, and I am happy. John Caley

Dear Sir I was particularly interested in the ‘Winter in Hadleigh 63 years ago’ article from Roger Kennell - Hadleigh History Recorder in the January 2011 edition. In 1947 Aldham Mill Hill was a narrow ‘gorge’ with no verges, cut between

the fields, and this completely filled with snow during the harsh winter. As an intrepid 11 year old in my first year at Sudbury Grammar School I regularly cycled from Whatfield to Hadleigh to catch the school bus to Sudbury. I recall that in the company of Ray Mowles, we negotiated the Hill by pushing our way along the top of the bank to reach our objective. In later years, I was joined by Keith Avis, and can say that I didn’t miss a days’ school in 5 years. To my knowledge, everyone worked flat out to keep businesses and schools open, and it is questionable as to whether the same application to ‘duty’ is shown today. Keith, I am sure, will also recall those halcyon days, albeit that we had to complete our homework before going out to play with the rest of the village lads. In winter, sledging down “Hilly Meadow” was the highlight. Colin C King

Dear Sir What a typical sarcastic Councillor letter to open your Letter page last month. I would mention that I have NO political allegiance, because I believe that Politicians of all persuasions are not in it for the interest of the people and the good they can do, but for their own swagger and self gratification. It would have been so much nicer if he had come up with some sensible ideas on what could be done to improve things in the area, not just 30 lines ‘slagging off’ the opposition. So they may have made mistakes!. Is he trying to tell us that the Conservatives have never made mistakes both locally and nationally? Think back. If we are in the business of throwing brickbats, think of the problems we had with those interminable years under Margaret Thatcher and her successors, who among other things helped ruin the State Pension scheme by stopping the linking element etc. etc. On a more up to date and local topic, our local County Council, (Conservative controlled) on whom he seems to heap such praise, are paying unbelievable money to a Chief Executive, but at the same time are talking of cutting the services of the gallant ‘Lollipop’ Ladies and Gentlemen, who turn out in all weathers to protect our youngsters and do a first class and important job for very little money, to show a mere saving of £140,000/ £170,000 per year, thus putting the safety of all our young children in jeopardy. What is more important, our Children and their future, or one grossly overpaid Executive? Get into the real world. Keith Doidge

floorspace need estimated in this survey”. Despite the Retail Study having identified the floorspace need, the Impact Assessment produces its own figures which effectively increases this need, thereby getting closer to the Tesco proposal. The assessment quotes from the Traffic Assessment included in the application “that there will not be an unacceptable effect on local traffic levels and congestion…”. This conflicts with Tesco’s own statement that an increase of 400 vehicle movements per hour can be expected. As current traffic surveys show an average of 350 movements per hour now, an addition in that order would have Bridge Street suffering one vehicle movement every 4.8 seconds. Therefore those people who have received a letter will note that nothing has changed. This remains a project for a onestop store; a supermarket twice the size of the town need, largely unwanted, in the wrong location and promising enormous traffic and safety problems at the expense of allotments, conservation area and environment, and a threat to High Street shops especially the Coop. To those who maintain that the High Street will not be affected it is suggested that they read Mr. R. Caley’s letter in the newsletter for December, experiences which are echoed across the country. Anyone who finds objections to this proposal should, if they have not already done so, write individually to Councillors on the Development Committee (details on Hands Off Hadleigh website). D.A. Parker

Dear Sir I was much encouraged to read the letter by the Town Mayor in the January HCN. Her management approach to the likely devolution of services is commendable. Far too often the aim of Town Councils seems to be to extend their area of influence without consideration of net costs. I welcome the pragmatism shown. Roger Young

Dear Sir May I, through the medium of your Community News, offer my sincere gratitude to all members of the public who came to my aid on Monday 17th January when I sustained a fall outside Hicks electrical shop. Although events were somewhat blurred, I remember a gentleman helping me to my feet, who later checked with me in Lloyds Bank. Also, I think there was a lady with a pram who expressed concern. Later, whilst waiting for Lloyds to open, a young lady heard me calling my daughter on my mobile to pick me up and she again offered to help me across the road to sit in a local business. It is good to know that there are still people who care. Incidentally I found out later at the doctors that it was caused by an imbalance of fluid in the inner ear which can bring on dizzy spells and blackouts. Once again, my thanks to all concerned. E.A. Robinson

Dear Sir A large number of your readers will have received a letter recently from Babergh Planning Department advising that further information had been received towards the supermarket application, in the form of a Retail Impact Assessment. This assessment was produced by a firm on behalf of Tesco wholly to support the application. It uses data from the Babergh District Retail Survey 2008 selectively, where this enhances the project. e.g. that a maximum need of 1500 sq m of retail floor space is recommended. What is not said is that the survey calculated that Hadleigh had a shortfall of just 950 sq m of retail floorspace, and that given the Tesco high stocking density this should be less. Estimated need 950 sq m, Tesco proposal 1986 sq m (or twice the need). There are a number of quotations from the survey but not including “it is clear that the existing proposal exceeds the quantitative

History of Digital Cinema in Hadleigh

The Ghost (15) £3 FRIDAY 11th FEBRUARY at 7.30 pm Based on the successful novel by Robert Harris, the plot could well be described as “Writer for hire is a wanted man!” Ewan McGregor is hired as a ghost writer to complete the unfinished memoirs of a former British prime minister, Adam Lang – played with conviction by Pierce Brosnan. Directed by Roman Polanski this is a darkly sinister film when the initial ghost writer of Lang’s memoirs was discovered dead on the beach at Martha’s Vineyard where ex Prime Minister Lang was staying. Lang is a professional charmer - beaming smiles but with a hidden undercurrent of rage brought about by recently announced investigations into his involvement with torture in Iraq. The parallels with Tony Blair and Lang spice up this story, especially relating to references to Iraq and the Central Intelligence Agency. Placard-waving protesters gathering outside Lang’s hideaway, fingers pointing, all serve to add suspense to the plot. Please note this film is rated 15.

Mamma Mia (PG) £3 (accompanied children £2)

Like all small towns, Hadleigh used to have its own commercial cinema. Called THE PALACE, this former redbrick malthouse survived until the mid-sixties, when it closed and the site developed for the shops we see today – Sue Ryder being one of three. Some 40 odd years have elapsed since then. The whole concept of film going has changed from one large screen to the multi-plex units. And, with this revolution has now come a valid alternative to commercial cinema viewing with the birth of the DVD cinema. DVD cinemas came about with the need to support film viewing on cruise ships, ferries, air travel and other venues where film entertainment is needed . Specialist distributors were launched with vast libraries providing films ranging from those still being shown at cinemas to classic films, foreign language and historic films . Now an up to date film could be brought to a village hall in DVD format, providing first class entertainment and staffed by a team of volunteers. Polstead was one of the first in this area to embrace a cinema in its hall. In 2006 a sub committee from The Ansell Community Centre was set up to introduce active cinema again to Hadleigh. Some of the original team are still with us today : Jan Dicks, Eve McCoid, Mike Newman and Tom Gordon . Our current team of seven now includes Bob Smith, Tom Tebbutt and John Rose, plus Nigel Crisp who is on hand for his technical knowledge and expertise. Having agreed to start a DVD cinema, the steering committee were faced with providing all the equipment needed to meet cinema requirements. Fortunately a hire service was available from Suffolk Digital Cinema Network and sponsored by Babergh District Council. The package was available free and on loan from The Quay Theatre, Sudbury. It was easy to arrange to hire, but less than easy to implement ! The film equipment almost fitted into the back of a large estate car – once arrived in Hadleigh it had to be offloaded, connected, wired and tested before an evening performance. And, following the end of the show, dismantled, and carefully loaded into the estate car for the return to The Quay - by the following day! The only evidence of those early days is the wooden cinema projector stand that is situated at the rear of The Ansell Centre. Hollywood In Hadleigh opened on 24th February 2006 with the screening of Oliver Twist. Forty eight people came to this presentation - the committee hoped that future films would attract better support. Unfortunately this was not the case when Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire attracted 12 people and Pirates of the Caribbean only 10 patrons. We also tried Sunday Cinema for the autumn and winter; this made a loss on each film as we only had around 25 people for a performance The committee realised the need to cater for a more mature audience and now a film committee considers all potential films, both new and classic, before preparing each 3 - 4 month programme. The average attendance for the cinema has now reached 80 which is a positive indication that we have found our market.

Douglas J. Grimsey The family wish to thank all friends and relatives who attended his funeral on Monday 6th December. Donations made in his memory to the S.C.B.U. totalled a magnificent £461.00. SUE WARD – NEDGING WITH NAUGHTON SUE has been at the heart of activities in the Nedging community for the last decade since she moved into the Village. Sue initiates events and inspires others to join in and contribute to the regular events which give great pleasure and help to bring local people together socially and build community spirit. Sue ensures that there is a social event at least once a month and works hard to include as many people as possible, particularly those who live alone. Many of the activities take place in the Village Hall to which Sue and her husband devote a great deal of time. Thanks to Sue’s efforts the Village enjoys an annual dinner and summer barbeque together with games evenings and other social events. Community group visits to theatres, gardens and stately homes are also on Sue’s agenda and she plays a significant part in contributing to the successful annual produce show, May Fair and other local events. Sue’s most significant contribution to the Nedging community is the care she displays in the support of anyone who has suffered a bereavement or serious illness. Sue’s nomination was accompanied by letters of support signed by over 80 villagers and we are told “Sue’s bright cheery manner and unceasing love of people binds our community and she fully deserves to be recognised as a local hero”. MICHAEL WATTS – HADLEIGH RUGBY CLUB MICHAEL WATTS is the lead coaching co-ordinator at Hadleigh Rugby club and is awarded for his endeavours to develop the playing, communication skills and character building of the young individuals in his charge. Mike came to the Club five years ago as a parent wanting his sons to learn the game. His enthusiasm was infectious and he soon volunteered to become a coach himself and persuaded several other fathers to join him to enable more children to take part. Mike was instrumental in introducing the “Player of the Month” awards and “Most Improved Players” awards. Two years ago, he took on the role of overall coaching co-ordinator - a unanimous decision by all the coaches and parents. Since then Mike has organised a family fun day and arranged for the very first Youth Rugby Tour to France. He now provides coaching at several local schools and the number of children who attend the Club has increased from 50 to 160. He has also increased the number of volunteer coaches from 8 to 24 and delighted hundreds of parents who have witnessed their children improving in the skills of rugby and their own personal development. The Club comment: “Mike contributes so much to the children who enjoy his company and his well organised activities and has the respect and admiration of all the parents and fellow coaches; Mike is recognised as being someone with a special character and gift to enable others to do well.” CLIVE POWNEY – SUDBURY GATEWAY CLUB CLIVE is awarded for his voluntary service to Sudbury Gateway Club where he has worked for 17 years with people who have learning difficulties and disabilities. During this time Clive has organised and taken members on many holidays and to annual camps. Prior to this Clive worked as a youth worker at Hadleigh Youth Club for 12 years and also taught Judo at Ipswich Judo Club for 5 years. Clive is a Duke of Edinburgh Award assessor and trained the Hadleigh group to Gold level, taking them to Bavaria for their assessment. Members of the Gateway Club tell us “Clive is cheerful, hardworking and very supportive of our Club members who all have disabilities and we think he richly deserves a Community Award.”

MARION BROWN – ELMSETT MARION has lived in Elmsett most her life and been involved in many village activities and organisations. For many years Marion was an Officer and Captain in the 1st Elmsett Boys Brigade. She always had the boys interests at heart, organising many camps and a full programme of activities to keep them occupied. Marion was secretary of the Suffolk Carpet Bowls Association for 13 years and is still on the Committee. She is a member of Elmsett Fellowship Brass Band and plays at Church Services, fetes etc. to raise funds for the National Childrens Home. Marion is a supportive member of Elmsett Methodist Church and is also the Booking Secretary for the Church premises and organises monthly community lunches for Elmsett and the surrounding community. Recently Marion has taken a leading role in the Elmsett Over-60s where she organises the fortnightly sessions, trips out and the Christmas meal and party. Marion is also Elmsett’s representative for Age UK. We are told “Whatever Marion does, she does with enthusiasm and thought for the people involved.” BILL HORNE – BOXFORD BILL has been actively involved in the village community for the last 30 years and given his time willingly to a number of organisations across a wide range of activities. Bill instigated the setting up of the annual Boxford Bonfire Night which has been running for many years. He also undertook the running and organisation of the Boxford Rovers football team for 11 years and became its Chairman. Bill has also spent time with the local Cub Scouts helping them work towards and achieve their orienteering badges. He was the founder member and volunteer for the Three Parishes Response group and worked tirelessly to get the group started, spreading the word around the community. To raise funds Bill designed and produced a Christmas card, at his own expense, the proceeds of which were donated to the group. He volunteered for the Response group for 6 years. Bill is also an active member of the Boxford Drama Group including writing and directing two pantomimes, operating the lights and even making the occasional appearance on stage! More recently Bill has become an active member of the Boxford Village Hall Committee and has been involved in setting up the Village Hall’s new website where the Hall will be promoted as an attractive venue for the whole community. Bill was also instrumental in helping to raise money for the new Village Hall roof by pioneering the “Raise the Roof” campaign which raised £5,000 in donations from the village. The many supporting letters received all pay tribute to Bill’s community work and one comments: “Bill is someone who I have the utmost respect for. I am extremely grateful for his efforts with Boxford Rovers. His drive, determination and steadfastness underpinned the ethos of the Club. Many people would say they owe a little of their character to Bill.”

A local golf club continues to be one of the fastest recruiting in the country, with 180 welcomed to membership in the last two years. In the last 12 months Newton Green Golf Club has seen an influx of 100 newcomers across a wide range of categories. As it maintains its membership drive, it is opening 2011 with a 15 month membership for the price of 12 months. The club has been offering special deals three times a year and says the marketing tactic has proved an investment, with many of the new joiners renewing their subscriptions at the appropriate times. Chairman, Paddy Lockwood, said: “Our offers are realistically priced which means newcomers are paying an attractive, yet reasonable fee to come on board. We try and make a special effort to reach out to our new arrivals and are pleased so many go on to make a longer term commitment. “Golf clubs across the country have been wrestling with declining membership numbers, although the actual number of individuals playing the sport has been going up. “We are trying to show people that actually joining a club can take their participation in the sport to a new level of enjoyment. “We recognise the need to allow people to get into a club through a range of entry choices, which reflect varying degrees of commitment, both in terms of leisure time availability and the amount they wish to invest in their sport.” Mr Lockwood said nearly 40 full members had joined during the year, plus 16 juniors, 10 Davey pay and play members and nine intermediates (aged 18-30). In addition, a further 21 had taken up a three month deal in October, and the club was now looking forward to taking many of them on board permanently.

Swim for Pixie 2011 We are holding a charity swim to raise money and awareness for FSID (Foundation for the study of infant deaths) on 12th February 2011. Our daughter Pixie Belle passed away suddenly on 3rd July 2010 aged just 13 months. The past 6 months have been so horrendous for the whole family that we decided to focus on something postive and the idea of the swim came about as Pixie loved the water so much. We spent 8 months in Brunei, Malaysia and she was in the pool almost everyday. We have 36 swimmers taking part in the 24 hour swim, 22 of which are serving soldiers the rest being family and close friends. We hope to achieve the same distance as the London marathon as many times as we can. The swim will take place at Wattisham station where my husband is currently based with the Army Air Corps. We already have well over £2000 in sponsors and we hope to achieve our target of £7000. We are looking for donations of not only money but drinks for the swimmers such as energy drinks, bottles of water and cans of drink. We also need fruit and snacks and would like to have a printed t shirt for everyone involved. If there is any way that you could help with any of this it would be so much appreciated, Please help us to raise awareness and help find a reason why so many beautiful babies and children die each year and help us to support the familes affected by such a tragedy. Hadleigh Hares Athletic Club Celebrating 25 years of Road Running, Athletics, Cycling & Triathlon HADLEIGH 10 MILE ROAD RACE The club’s showpiece event recently underwent a scrutiny by the British Association of Road Races, who work in unison with UK Athletics. Following on from this inspection the club is extremely proud to say that our race is ranked in the top 5% of races that have been scrutinized in England. Our thanks as always go to the numerous volunteers who help run our club and whom were on hand to organize this year’s event; well done to you all. SUFFOLK CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS The 12km Suffolk cross country championships were held at Ickworth Park, Bury St Edmunds on 9 January. The course was one of the toughest used over recent years, and it was certainly a challenge worthy of the county championship event. It was a very muddy course with some boggy parts that had you sliding all over the place, combined with some nice hills for the insane. Two Hadleigh Hares managed to make the event and do themselves proud, Brian Airlie finishing in 46th place with a time of 55.21 closely followed by Steve Hunt finishing in 59th place with a time of 58.49. Well done to them both. COME AND JOIN US – EVERYONE WELCOME! Dixon Dart League December 13th Division one - Legion legends continue to keep it tight at the top with an 11-0 demolition of the Cock, Kevin Leathers was on top form for the legends producing an awesome display including a 180 in his singles win. Brewers A are also still in the mix after beating the British Legion A 8-3, Curtis Hammond the pick of the bunch in this match hitting his third maximum this season in his singles win for the Brewers side. The Ram jets still hold on to third spot after a close 6-5 victory against the George B. Division two - Hintlesham George were beaten for the first time this season, losing out 6-5 to the Brewers B, Busky Sargent walked away with the man of the match award pitching some top darts in his win for the Brewers side. The kings Head still remain top after an 8-3 win at the Cock Roosters, Hintlesham Social club are still without a win as they went down 7-4 to the British Legion B. December 20th Division one - The nightmare before Christmas became a reality for the British Legion A side as they were well and truly "tucked up" by the Legion Legends winning this one 10-1, Russel Hynard remains one of only two players unbeaten as he stared for the Legends. George A beat the B side in this local derby match, but can consider themselves a "tad" unlucky to loose this one 9-2, there were some great darts from the B side players which included a 180 from Pete Gooderham and Dumpy Rush, along with a 138 finish (60-40-38) from Steve Gooderham, failure to take out earlier doubles cost the B side dearly here.
