Latest Sudbury Calendar available now! Sudbury’s official calendar goes up in the air with seldom seen views of the town. Artist and designer Robin Drury offers some quirky, often bird’s-eye-view images, of well known scenes on every page of Sudbury Town Council’s colourful 2018 calendar. “I was lucky enough to have access to the top of two of our medieval church towers just at the time I was deciding how to approach the calendar project. The long climbs were worth every step. They gave me the opportunity to portray the old town with views not normally seen said Robin who has lived and worked in Sudbury for more than 40 years. “My sketches might not be to everyone’s taste as I tend to include warts and all and that includes cars. This is very much my view of the town. Robin’s connection with art in with Sudbury goes back a long way. He has been involved with arranging the biennial Visions of Sudbury exhibitions for a number of years and more recently mounted the very successful Sudbury Summer Art Fair - both shows held in St Peter’s. His design work includes the overall look of Sudbury Heritage Centre. The calendar will be on sale in the Tourist Information Centre in Sudbury Library as well as through other local outlets. All profits will go towards the retention of Sudbury Tourist Information Centre.

Bures Music Festival 2017 Awards Kernos £1000 Kernos was delighted and extremely grateful recently to receive grant of £1000 from proceeds of the Bures Music Festival 2017, money which is being put towards funding therapeutic creative and play equipment for helping to treat Children and Young People. Clinical Director Chris Boatwright attended the awards evening in the Eight Bells in Bures on 28th September, where Chris Boatwright receiving the Certificate the organisers presented from Jayne Crowely her with a Certificate to display in the Centre. After receiving the Certificate, and thanking the organisers for their generosity, Chris reflected: “The Bures Music Festival grant will make a huge difference to the Kernos Centre. It will enable us to buy much needed play and creative therapy equipment. So many children and young people find that using such equipment makes it easier to express themselves and communicate at their own level. Creative therapy is considered particularly important for people who struggle verbally to express and understand confused and upsetting feelings. It can help children, young people and adults too, explore their thoughts and feelings, and make sense of their life experiences, increasing their self-esteem and confidence.”

Sudbury Choral Society presents from Bach to Baroque including Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas Sunday 19th November sees the Sudbury Choral Society embark on concert containing one of Bach’s most popular works “Jesu Joy of Man’s desiring” along with the ethereal sounds of Charpentier’s “Messe de Minuit” and also for them a new style of music; they are giving a concert performance of Purcell’s opera “Dido and Aeneas”. One of the earliest known English operas, this epic tale of love and deceit is set in ancient Greece. It recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her. A monumental work in Baroque opera, Dido and Aeneas is remembered as one of Purcell's foremost theatrical works. It was also Purcell's only true opera, as well as his only all-sung dramatic work. It is believed that it had its first performance in 1689. Sudbury Choral Society are always keen to support young soloists just starting out on their musical careers and in this concert we will have five young soloists who are currently studying on the post graduate course at the Royal College of Music, one of the best music conservatoires in the world. WoolOvers comes to Sudbury Started in 1989 from small beginnings, WoolOvers is now a world class knitwear retailer, supplying over 1 million customers with men's and ladies classic and contemporary knitwear. We now have websites for the UK, Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and two fully-translated versions for France and Russia - all helping to ensure we can spread our love of knitwear the world over! We developed our business through meeting many of our customers at the various UK Equestrian and Country Shows. Our range of knitwear has now grown since those early days to over 160 styles available in 180 different colours and combinations, and is still very much the creation of our customer feedback. We are of the firm belief that successful ‘niche’ marketers need to develop specialist knowledge to enable them to go that extra mile, and we’ve been completely wrapped up in natural fibre knitwear for over 25 years now. So, for lovers of Wool, Cotton & Cashmere knitwear, we think we’ve managed to create a rather special range that offers you amazing value, without compromising on quality. More importantly, we hope you feel the same! In association with the 100% Pure Wool Board and Woolmark, we ensure that our woollen yarns are of the highest quality, and unlike most high street knitwear today, all of our styles are fully machine washable. Today there is a greater need to use natural, renewable products. Wool fulfils this need, whilst also providing warm, stylish, and durable garments. We sincerely hope you find what you are looking for at our event at St Peters Church in Sudbury on the 16th of November, and that we provide you with the quality of knitwear product and level of service you expect.

Figures revealed by Rightmove show that 30% of the properties marked ‘sale agreed’ ended up being available on the site again, the highest percentage over the past four years. Additional figures show that 21% of property purchases fell through because the buyer pulled out as their own sale fell through. The current economic uncertainty, driven in part by Brexit, increasing inflation and uncertainty over the current interest rates has all thought to have impacted property sales over the past year and contributed to chains being weaker and sometimes more complex, leading to an increase in the number of chains collapsing and transactions falling through. What is frustrating is that if your transaction does fall-through it is unlikely to even be your fault and is much more likely to be due to an issue with another transaction in the chain, of which yours is just one. Why do transactions fall through? As you may expect there are a number of reasons for property transactions falling through and most causes will unfortunately be beyond your control. However, some of the common reasons are: • Either the seller or buyer changing their mind • Issues raised on the survey that cannot be resolved • Issues raised on the survey or valuation regarding the value of the property • A disagreement between the buyer and the seller that cannot be resolved • The seller or the buyer’s circumstances change due to a change of job or breakdown of a relationship. When a transaction falls through it can have a huge impact on your finances, with Which? estimating that the average amount lost by those individuals in these circumstances amounts to £2,899 – consisting mainly of mortgage fees, surveys and conveyancing fees. However, in instances where a solicitor offers a No Sale, No Fee Promise you would not pay any of the conveyancing fees. All you would be charged for is any disbursements that may have been paid out to third parties, such as search fees – providing you with additional protection in the unfortunate event that your property transaction falls through. In instances where your chosen conveyancing solicitor does not offer a No Sale, No Fee Promise you would be charged for all or part of the legal fee you were originally quoted despite the fact that you have nothing to show for it and are no closer to moving. Holmes & Hills Solictors offer a No Sale, No Fee promise as standard and also boast a low transaction fall-through rate that is approximately half the national average. Holmes & Hills provide conveyancing and property related legal services from five offices across Suffolk and Essex, including Sudbury. Call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 to get a conveyancing quote with a No Sale No Fee Promise.

Sudbury Memory Walk Success The 2017 Sudbury Memory Walk was a huge success. With 253 walkers took to the beautiful Stour Valley Trail to Unite Against Dementia. Walking in memory of those that we love. The weather was kind and the rain held off and while some were blown along the route the sun peeped through to keep spirits high. The huge crowd were warmed up by Josie from Dance East and were entertained on their return by the hugely talent Gabby Rivers and young talent from Sudbury who we are sure will be one to watch for the future. With over 30 volunteers, making the day possible walkers enjoyed stepping back in time with the world war two memorabilia and reenactors. Tea and cake were plentiful, supplied by the East of England Coop, Care UK and the Bridge project. Huge thanks goes out to Jerry our community volunteer who’s mum Kate was the inspiration for the Sudbury Memory Walk. Jerry did an amazing job engaging with local businesses and support groups to create fantastic goody bags for all that walked that included some wonderful Koning’s apple juice and Weston Bakery flapjacks along with lots of useful information. Jerry says “I was delighted to see so many people had joined us to walk this year. We had 100 more than year one and we have now agreed this will become an annual event so look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday 6th October 2018” #thememorywalkman Cllr Margaret Maybury, Babergh District Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities said, “I would like to congratulate everyone who took part in the Memory Walk and all those people who helped to make it happen. There was a wonderful buzz of excitement and friendship around the whole event and I’d like to say a huge thank you to all the businesses and companies who supported the walk in any way at all. It was a fantastic way to help raise awareness of this devastating disease and I am already looking forward to taking part again next year.” One of the walkers Diana Stone (83 years young) said “ the reason I took part in Sudbury Memory Walk was multi-faceted; I love walking, I support several charities , I enjoy the company as I am quite new to Sudbury ,overall it was a lovely day and I will definitely be taking part next year !” A big thank you to everyone who made donations on the day. Our street collection totalled £843.50. It is not too late to donate. You can visit out crowdfunding page at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/sudburymemory-walk this will stay open until 30th November 2017. Alternatively you can pay your sponsorship money into your nearest Barclays Bank (details can be found on your sponsorship forms) If you are a local business or individual looking to support Sudbury to become a dementia friendly town please email us now and we will put you in touch with other like-minded people. hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk

James Cartlidge writes

Member of Parliament for South Suffolk In last month’s column I explained that I would be launching a parliamentary petition urging the Government to support the construction of a Sudbury Bypass. I have been delighted by the response since then from all sides of the debate. Wherever one stands on the issue, it’s great to have such widespread public discourse. Of course, there are many who worry about congestion and pollution in Sudbury but would not want a bypass to be built near the water meadows. I quite understand; any route must be as environmentally sympathetic as possible. Many also fear that a bypass would result in lots of development along its flanks. To this, I can only reiterate that across South Suffolk we have real examples of very effective bypasses – Boxford, Hadleigh and Long Melford - and it is striking how those roads, all built some years ago, remain flanked by open countryside rather than a parade of housing estates and factories. Indeed, imagine if tomorrow we decided that in order to preserve our countryside we would grass over the Boxford, Hadleigh or Long Melford bypasses. Can one imagine Boxford with all the traffic going through it that currently goes down the 1071? Likewise Hadleigh. How much harder would it be to get from Sudbury to Bury without the Melford bypass? In such campaigns it’s easy to exaggerate fearful impressions of the impact change will have. But if we don’t change the way traffic moves around Sudbury I genuinely fear for the town’s future health. To this it is argued that we can still move the HGVs and heavy traffic out without a bypass, just by moving the strategic lorry route. To which I say, where to? Lorries cannot vanish. They can either go through other communities likely to fiercely object, or they can drive through Sudbury. Alternatively, they can drive round it - but only if we build a bypass. The petition is available to sign online at www.sudburybypass.org.uk. In addition, paper copies are available to sign at Sudbury Town Hall, Cornard Stevenson Centre, Winch & Blatch and other shops displaying a petition poster.

Sudbury Mayor’s Report I’ve had an exciting month. Lots of challenges and very busy. I had the pleasure of representing Sudbury at Civic Services in Hadleigh, Needham Market and Woodbridge, all an honour to take part in. I also had my own civic service at St Gregory’s, which I was humbled by, being so well attended and was such a wonderful afternoon. Cheryl did a fabulous job and I’ve had so much lovely feedback. Huge thanks to everyone who took part and came along. What a lovely evening at the Pride of Sudbury awards presentation. It was great to see so many people and present the awards to the deserving winners. Well done to Andy Howes for working so hard to make this years Pride of Sudbury such a huge success. The Befriending Scheme held their AGM and the Sophie Bavington Awards presentation at the town hall. Being one of my charities this year I was keen to attend. The work they do is inspirational and it was a pleasure to join Tony and Carmel Bavington to hear all about the amazing nominees and the winner this year Jade Macdonald. I had another successful coffee morning and later that afternoon attended the 60th anniversary of the Suffolk records service at University of Suffolk, Ipswich. A fascinating afternoon. I attended the public meeting at the United Reform Church and was heartened to hear from so many individuals, charities and organisations that are keen to keep this wonderful building as a community asset. The meeting was very well attended and I feel we have a great starting point on which to build. Any initiative to that end will have my full support.

It was World Mental Health day in mid October so I was happy to pop and see my friends from The Richmond Fellowship on their Market stall. It’s great to get the message out about all the brilliant work they do. I had the great honour of being invited to the West Suffolk College University Of Suffolk Graduation ceremony at St Edmundsbury cathedral. It was amazing to see so many graduating with brilliant qualifications and many young people from Sudbury. I popped along to the Chit Chat group and helped celebrate their 2 year anniversary- well done to Collette and all who take part! My next coffee morning is 4th November - also that day The Heritage Centre officially re-opens after its move so do come along and join us and take a look around. Sarah Page, Sudbury Town Mayor

Cathy and her husband Peter have clearly had a wonderful time sourcing new stock for their up coming FĂŞte de NĂśel as their barn and garden is a veritable treasure trove of fabulous decorative pieces for the home and truly thoughtful gifts this Christmas. “There’s nothing nicer than being given something really thought out - a special gift doesn’t have to be extravagant, just personal and hopefully original: What could be nicer than a lovely vase to go with your flowers, a decanter filled with bubble bath or a wonderful old vine corkscrew to go with that bottle of wine!â€? In her enthusiasm Cathy does concede that Christmas shopping can be exhausting “Which is why we try and make our FĂŞte de NĂśel a really happy and original shopping experience and part of the whole fun of Christmas there’s mulled wine and french carols and an abundance of unusual gifts that we’ve sourced from all over France. My biggest problem is wanting to keep the gorgeous things we find!â€? Perhaps she should take note of antique expert Mark Hill, who commented "The Boule-in is perfect gifting territory - self gifting includedâ€? Helen Swift Curtains & Blinds I started making curtains for my own home as a hobby and gaining skills through courses, which led to getting some experience working part time for an interior design workshop. Before I knew it I was busy with my own client work making curtains and roman blinds for cottages to country houses, holiday lets to B&B’s and even a horse box. I now have 13 years experience under my belt. Working from home I create bespoke soft furnishings from cushions and lampshades to pelmets and bedspreads. I can advise on all aspects of soft furnishings, from fabrics, trimmings and tiebacks to tracks, curtain poles and finials. Call me to arrange an appointment for me to measure and discuss your soft furnishing needs. I have sample books for both fabrics and trimmings, which I can either bring along or can be browsed by appointment at my workshop, or I can order in additional samples for you. Contact details and examples of my work can be viewed on my website at helenswift.co.uk

Local business takes saving sight to new heights Two daredevils from a local opticians raised £800 by taking on a gravitydefying challenge in aid of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) in line with National Eye Health Week. Felixstowe and Sudbury Specsavers store director Naeem Kazi and Harriet, a Contact Lens Supervisor at the store, took part in a charity skydive from a plane thousands of feet above the ground in Beccles, Norfolk. The team took on the challenge in aid of the RNIB which offers information, support and advice to almost two million people in the UK with sight loss. With the sky-high support of their colleagues and customers across the two stores, Naeem and Harriet have so far raised £800. Naeem comments: ‘Both Harriet and I found the jump to be an exhilarating experience. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated. ‘Along with Specsavers, the RNIB has just released a report ahead of National Eye Health Week showing that one in five people will live with sight loss in their lifetime despite at least half of all cases being avoidable. ‘The alarming new statistics show that every day 250 people start to lose their sight in the UK. Women, who tend to live longer, are at greater risk than men, with one in four women set to develop sight loss in their lifetime compared with one in eight men[ii]. This is why it’s so important that we support the lifechanging work they do, as well as providing services to keep the Sudbury and Felixstowe’s eye health in good shape. All donations make such a valuable difference to this cause, and we’re really grateful for everyone’s support.’ To donate to the RNIB or book a sight or hearing test, visit: Specsavers Sudbury: 6a Market Hill, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 2EA, call 017874 68730 or book online at https://www.specsavers.co.uk/stores/sudbury

The Fifth Lavenham Literary Festival 2017 - Tickets Selling Fast Tickets for the hugely popular Lavenham Literary Festival are selling fast, with some sessions close to being a sell-out. However, it is not too late to book for the event on 17-19 November and to hear and meet speakers from the impressive line-up for the weekend. The festival offers a fascinating contrast surrounding World WarII, with Clare Mulley presenting her latest book ‘The Women who flew for Hitler’ on the Saturday and a panel of outstanding biographers coming together on the Sunday afternoon to talk about THE British statesman Winston Churchill. If crime fiction is your scene, bestselling author, Sophie Hannah – who has published two novels featuring the wonderful Hercule Poirot - will be entertaining the audience on Saturday afternoon, in the company of her mother, Adele Geras – herself a wonderfully popular author. The Saturday afternoon also offers a ‘fringe event’ and a rare opportunity to dip into ‘The Golden Age of Ocean Liners’ with Greg Votolato, Course Director at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The popular radio presenter JP Devlin from Radio 4’s Saturday Live programme will be in conversation with internationally famous author Erica James on Sunday morning at 11 am. The popularity of the event has led the Committee to increase its size to 10 sessions, most of which will be held in Lavenham’s impressive Village Hall. The event also boasts a sell-out Festival Dinner, with speaker Simon Barnes, and an all-day creative writing course run by the highly rated Bridget Holding of Wild Words. During the summer a 500 word story competition was held for the Children of Sudbury and the surrounding area. We were very lucky that local publishers Lavenham press offered to sponsor the event by publishing the stories in a book. We also managed to ask author Anthony Horowitz to write a forward and sign the winning books. We are holding a Presentation Evening on Saturday 4th November at 3.00 pm where we will announce the winners of the competition and we will be giving out the prizes and launching the published book which will be available for sale for £5.00 from this date. The monies from the sale of the book will go towards vital funds for Suffolk Libraries and the friends of Sudbury Library.

Peter Thorogood... “Definition of a Politician; He is asked to stand, he wants to sit, and he is expected to lieâ€?. Churchill I deny the gift of prophecy but herewith quote the statement I made in August which I abbreviate “Following the illegal Traveller occupation of Nowton Park and the expensive clear up operation I note that Essex CC have gained a high court injunction barring the like occupation of some 332 vulnerable sitesâ€?. Therefore it would not take the imagination of a buffoon to realise that said Travellers would seek pastures more compliant in neighbouring counties, and I urged our Councillors to seek similar powers before the annual occupation of Sudbury’s lorry park. Well, I (and many supporters) told you so. The resultant besmirching of the area, the harassed pubs, the misuse of the Kingfisher Centre can be laid not only at the door of those anti-social elements but at the feet of our elected representatives who lacked the foresight of their Essex neighbours. And as for next year?? Just what purpose (at the annual cost of over ÂŁ1million) do you serve, can’t you even obtain a simple court injunction. How about meeting the cost of the clear up from your completely unjustified allowances? Having recently been castigated for calling certain power crazed and self important councillors “mendaciousâ€? I thought it best to peruse the Oxford Dictionary lest my choice of words be unfair or even libellous. Apparently the charge of untruthfulness could be unfounded so my apologies for an unfortunate choice of words. Apparently the omission of their intentions regarding local council unification from their manifesto is not telling porkies it is just being “economic with the truthâ€?. I should have instead accused same of an arrogance unequalled in Babergh politics in recent years. There can be no denial that the Babergh electorate voted by over 60% not to merge with Mid Suffolk DC. So our Leader and her compliant cohorts have now retired the chief executives of both authorities at whatever cost with pensions and pay outs, employed a joint supremo from a neighbouring money pit (recruitment costs iro ÂŁ33,000) and on a salary of ÂŁ110,000 plus pension etc, in order to manage this non-merged authority. The offices of this bloated bureaucracy moved to Ipswich, with totally inadequate parking whilst the Hadleigh offices will be sold in order to further bolster the pension funds. The disenchanted staff will be encouraged to work and communicate with the populace from their laptops or “hubsâ€? at the Sudbury town hall or local library. And all this time denying that any such uniting of councils is taking place, only the administration of same. Obviously the opposition parties are fighting this but our overtly smug executive should not yet count their chickens. Certain of their Tory chums, of a more democratic persuasion, are certainly uncomfortable with this abuse of power. With no public consultation and a town completely against any merger some have stated that as this move was not in their party manifesto there exists absolutely no mandate from the electorate. To further this issue without a second referendum is unjustified, dictatorial and a demonstration of a contempt of the democratic process. Methinks a change of mood is required. Last year I completed a study of Sudbury’s famed dining and drinking club, the Pickwick Society, in its three incarnations. I intend to present this, as a light humoured discourse, at the Quay Theatre on Sunday evening 21st January. The seldom sober revelries of its Victorian attired members, made up from the echelons of our town’s worthies, are a matter of some hilarious record. At the first such dinner, at Ballingdon’s Bull Hotel in 1907, the great and the good, all adopting a character from Pickwick Papers, met over a superb festive board to discourse and sing with great gusto. The minuted account of the proceedings relates a splendid tale of drunken revelry as Aldermen, innkeepers, the clergy, farmers, brewers and traders exchanged both toasts and insults. The following day a letter from an honoured guest to the Club’s secretary;

Lydia Hall completed a wire to wire victory in the WPGA International Challenge at Stoke by Nayland but there were a few unplanned diversions en route. Not least the sudden-death play-off with France’s Ines Escudier following a two shot swing on the par three final hole on the Gainsborough course at the Suffolk resort. Escudier, who began the day four shots behind Hall, birdied it for a six-under par round of 66 and complete the tournament’s 54-holes in nine-under. Hall, by contrast, bogeyed it. Back up the 18th tee the pair went but it was the 29-year-old PGA Assistant from Wales who appeared least fazed by the drama and ended up winning the 5,000 euro first prize. Lydia Hall, winner of the “The win was down to my putting again,â€? said Stoke by Nayland WPGA Hall, who recently spent time in Abu Dhabi and LETAS championship concentrating on honing that side of her game and making a couple of changes. “I’m playing a lot better now that I’ve sorted it out. I must say, though, the tense finish wasn’t in my plans. Ines made me work hard for my win – so did the three girls immediately behind us.â€? That trio comprising Scotland’s Michele Thomson, Emma Nilsson of Sweden, and Spain’s Luna Sobron finished two shots behind Hall and Escudier on sevenunder to win â‚Ź1650 apiece. As in previous years, a popular Pro Am preceded the 3 day championship and finished with a gala dinner and prize giving. The event this year was won by the celebrity “Media teamâ€? with a score of 85. The team included BBC TV Look East presenters, Stewart White and Tom Williams, Tamara Unwin, one of the family owners at Stoke by Nayland, and their professional, Meghan MacLaren who is leading the LETAS rankings and is assured a place in the Winning Pro Am Team: l to r Stewart main tour next season. The watchdog wants to hear from people that are currently using home care services, have used them in the past or those who may need help at home but have been unable to obtain support in the county. Domiciliary care is care provided in a person’s home. Sometimes it is called home care or ‘Support to Live at Home’. Home care can include support with things like helping people to get out of bed, washing, dressing, getting to work, cooking meals, eating, seeing friends, caring for families and being part of the community. Healthwatch Suffolk will use your feedback to help it understand the issues that people face when accessing care at home and what needs to be explored in detail as part of its developing project. As the health and care watchdog for Suffolk, it can use the things that people share to shape, influence and improve care to our county’s most vulnerable residents. Sharing your experiences couldn’t be easier If you are currently using a service, Healthwatch Suffolk is asking people to take part in a short survey. You can access it using the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/homecareinsuffolk If you are not currently accessing support or would prefer not to feedback online, please contact the Healthwatch Suffolk team on 08004488234 (Freephone) or by email to info@healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk. Hard copies of the survey and other formats are available on request.

Newton take Woodbridge to penultimate hole before surrending Cranworth Final A narrow, but deserved, 5-4 win saw Woodbridge hold off Newton Green from recording a hat-trick of final wins against them in the Suffolk Cranworth Trophy at Diss. Newton won the morning foursomes 2-1, but Woodbridge came back strongly, with victory in the last singles match on the course seeing them home on the 17th hole. Woodbridge had twice been beaten by the same opponents in finals in the last decade. They overcame a blow when they had to concede one of the three morning foursomes. Susie Whymark took a tumble on the eighth, which resulted in her suffering a fractured hand and being taken to hospital. At the time, the Newton due of Sue Cooper and Adrienne Hughes were holding a three-up lead against Whymark and partner Jill Scott Nicholls, and Woodbridge had to concede. However, as a result of a new ruling this year, they were able to stay on course with a full turn out in the afternoon singles. The competition now allows clubs to field six from a squad of eight to take account of such an eventuality. In the other foursomes, Pam MacBride and Sheila Burgess won one up against Janet Sparks and Vivien Lister, while Liz Piercy and Anne Truman were defeated 2 & 1 by Newton’s Rosie Jackson and Gwyneth Ferreira. Despite losing the opening singles match in the afternoon, the Woodbridge middle order performed strongly. With the match poised on 4 -4, captain Pam McBride needed a half from one of the last two holes against Tibby Mimpriss to ensure a Woodbridge win. This she duly achieved victory with a win on the 17th as the Newton player conceded before reaching the green. The trophy was presented to MacBride by Suffolk Ladies president Hermione Scrope. Foursomes: Pam MacBride and Sheila Burgess won one up to Janet Sparks and Viviene Lister, Jill Scott Nichols and Susie Whymark conceded to Sue Cooper and Adrienne Hughes 14 down, Liz Piercy and Anne Truman lost 2 & 1 to Rosie Jackson and Gwyneth Ferreira. Singles: Burgess lost 2 & 3 to Cooper, Nichols won 4 & 2 to Jackson, Anette Llewllyn won 3 & 1 to Sparks, Kate Symonds won 3 & 1 to Carol Durston, McBride won 3 & 1 to Tibby Mimpriss, Piercy lost 5 & 3 to Ferreira.
