Makeover My Home

My name is Suzy, my company Makeover My Home is a professional decluttering and organising service, specialising in home restyling and home staging. Most of us have hectic lives, with little time to clear cupboards, wardrobes, rooms – even sheds, garages and lofts - there never seems enough time to do the decluttering or tidying we would all really love to do. Clutter can be overwhelming and stressful – how many of us have trouble finding things in the home as we simply don’t know where to start looking for them? Many of us don’t even know what to wear as there are too many clothes to choose from even though they may not fit or you don’t even like them anymore! Decluttering and organising will give you a sense of ‘freedom’ from all the ‘stuff’ and ‘things’ we unnecessarily keep and surround ourselves with. Maybe you are moving home or downsizing to a smaller property and don’t know what to keep or let go? Maybe you need help with packing or unpacking? Home staging can be carried out if you are selling your home - making your property appeal to a wider selection of buyers, potentially achieving a higher price and a quicker sale. Maybe you’d just like your home restyled in an affordable way according to your budget, I can help you with this. Do you need help with a loved ones’ possessions and property after bereavement or hospitalisation – I have a caring and sensitive approach and can work with you through this difficult time. Fully insured, ICO registered and DBS checked and a proud member of the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers (APDO). I offer a free telephone consultation, so please give me a call to discuss any help you may need on 07939 074090 or email me on suzy@makeovermyhome.co.uk. Please visit my website at www.makeovermyhome.co.uk to see the various services and packages I can offer

Woods Around Town

Woods Around Town is a local environmental group for Sudbury and the surrounding villages dedicated to the creation of new woodland and wildlife habitats and to the maintenance of existing ones. Formed in 2006 just a small group of volunteers have: • Restored a pond 192 metres in circumference. It is now a home to breeding colonies of Great Crested Newts, Smooth Newt and much more. • Established a tree nursery with over 200 trees at any one time • Introduced the ‘Seed to Tree’ programme to local schools to get youngsters planting tree seeds. • Cleared community areas and planted many trees and hedgerows. • In 2015 we had a fantastic community effort with the planting of a 100m hedgerow alongside open ground at Aubrey Drive to protect the area from vehicular access. Woods Around Town is often consulted by local councils on environmental projects including the Sudbury area’s first Biodiversity Trail now known as the Gainsborough Trail. We are currently looking to create a new community woodland on an area of unused town council land near the Woodhall Moat. The group are going through the process of establishing the viability of the site and then the development of a Management Plan. We are now looking to recruit more members to our group and if you feel that you would like to join us please contact our Membership Secretary, Adrian Osborne, on 01787 466096 or alternatively on moonriverjan@gmail.com. Remember that not only would you be contributing to our green environment but also keeping yourself healthy.

The Boule-in's Celebrity Fête!

"We had the most fantastic Fête du Printemps" exclaims Cathy Bullen, proprietor of Bildeston's now renowned Decorative French Lifestyle boutique The Boule-in "and we are planning on making our summer fair Fête d'Été the most prodigious event we've held yet! Having made a conscious decision to enjoy the lifestyle of dividing our time between Suffolk and Provence (and less time in London!) we have increased our focus on our established quarterly French Fêtes in Suffolk: It was wonderful to have had so many of our London customers visit us in Bildeston during the spring fair and we are now absolutely thrilled to have our friend and Kennington neighbour, Mark Hill, author and TV celebrity antiques expert, come and hold a 'Valuation Day' during our Fête d'Été !" Throughout the week of this delightful French event The Boule-in offers antiques and decorative collectables for both home & garden, baskets, books, balsamics and even plant stalls to entice and inspire you to create your own piece of Provençal living in Suffolk! SSDFAS/ NADFAS present £500 cheque to Pot Kiln Primary School

On Thursday, 16 March 2017 - half term – South Suffolk Decorative Fine Arts Society - one of the local NADFAS societies - presented the Head Boy and Head Girl of Pot Kiln Primary School with a cheque for £500 to go towards creating an outside Music Station. This was part of SSDFAS support for Young Arts Projects in the area. The cheque was presented by Patrick Corney, Chairman & Jayne Blackwood, President of the South Suffolk Decorative & Fine Arts society at the beginning of class assembly with children, parents and staff present. The Music Station will be a performance space made from recycled materials and aims to continue to enhance the varied and ‘lively’ curriculum that Pot Kiln Primary School provides for their children. The Music Station will be an area where children can express themselves through the power of sound, composing and playing. Over the past year some children have attended music sessions with Noise Solution, a company that combines professional musicians with participants facing challenges in their lives. Impact on wellbeing and academic achievement was hugely positive for our children and evident when analysing data. The Music Station is Pot Kiln Primary School’s aim to allow this access to music for all and will play a vital role in allowing positive childhood development to take place in all areas. For further information please contact Deputy Head Teacher, Mrs Fiona Lock on 01787 372107 or Mrs Sue Beven, SSDFAS Young Arts Project Organizer on 01787 210021

President Trump’s decision to launch Tomahawk missile strikes against Syria has opened yet another high stakes chapter in the whirlwind that is international affairs today. Parliament rose for Easter following the UK’s formal notification to the EU of our intention to leave. It looks like we will be returning to debate the prospect of military conflict – not just in the middle east, but also in dangerous, dubious North Korea. It has been well remarked that Mr Trump’s move to back armed action by the US against President Assad represents a significant volte face on his part. Who knows, perhaps this unpredictability is an asset as despots like Assad and North Korea’s Kim are unable to second guess him, and perhaps feel more wary of aggression? Of course, if we are to assume that US sources are right in stating that Assad was responsible for launching chemical weapons on his own people, there is an argument for a limited and proportionate response. We certainly now need maximum international pressure applied to the Russians to cajole them in to breaking with Assad; equally, we need the Chinese to lean on North Korea so that they don’t proceed with further missile tests. Wishful thinking, perhaps. Whatever we do, in my view we must proceed with maximal caution. My fear is that we risk repeating the now tried and tested pattern of a bellicose linguistic ratchet that creates its own self-fulling momentum for conflict. With an unpredictable world, and an unpredictable president, we need to support our allies without adding to the growing sense of a militaristic adrenaline rush. I have only voted once in Parliament on sending UK forces to war, and that was very strictly to extend existing UK air strikes against ISIL terrorists in Iraq over the border into Syria - with no evidence of civilian casualties to date. I certainly did not vote for ‘regime change’, a phrase now re-emerging in Washington in relation to Assad. The policy of ‘regime change’ has failed in Iraq, and this is why I repeat the need for caution rather than a rush of blood.

Peter Gray to replace Roger Green as chairman of the Friends of St Peter’s

Tributes have been paid to the outgoing chairman of the Friends of St Peter’s, Roger Green, who has stepped down after 27 years in the role. The Friends of St Peter’s is the charity responsible for looking after St Peter’s church in the centre of Sudbury – one of the town’s landmark community buildings. Roger has been involved with the Friends of St Peter’s in some capacity since 1973. During his tenure as chairman, St Peter’s in Market Hill has become established as a hub for events in Sudbury including farmers markets, art exhibitions, music concerts, Thursday’s popular Kettle and Fish café and the annual Christmas tree festival. The venue attracts around 60,000 visitors every year, making it one of the most used redundant churches in the UK. Roger will be replaced by Peter Gray who has stepped up from vice-chairman. Peter said: “Roger can take much of the credit for St Peter's being the vibrant and cherished place it is today. He has given immeasurable hours to maintaining and improving St Peter's for the benefit of all, and he has done so with unerring wisdom, charm and diplomacy. The whole of Sudbury owes Roger a debt of gratitude for his enormous efforts over so many years. “He won't be allowed to wriggle completely off the hook, though; Roger will continue to work on collating research and writing about the heritage of St Peter's. There is nobody who knows more about the history of this building and its place in the town.” Peter takes over as chairman at an exciting time for the Friends of St Peter’s. The group recently secured a £10,000 Heritage Lottery Fund grant under the ‘Sharing Heritage’ scheme and is in the process of putting some of the money towards appointing a professional consultant who will be tasked with attracting more young people and youth groups to use the space, and promoting family events. The initiative is part of a larger, longer-term plan to modernise the interior of the 15th century church with enhanced visitor facilities, toilets and upgraded food service areas. Roger said: "I believe that Sharing Heritage has the potential to take St Peter’s forward to new projects and new ways of working to ensure a future for this wonderful building. Perhaps it will even lead to a change in the way we see the building. I was aged 28 when I first became involved with St Peter’s. It excited me then and I know it can do the same for those of similar age today." He added: "Peter is the perfect person to fill the role of chairman. I trust, admire and respect him hugely. He has a proven track record of service to St Peter’s. He also has my total support and I know he has the support of those elected to serve with him for the coming year." A high street travel agency in Hadleigh has been named as one of the best travel agencies in the UK & Ireland

Travel Stop has been selected as the Top Travel Agency in the East of England as part of a power-list of the nation’s best agents by industry bible the Travel Trade Gazette. The TTG Top 50 Travel Agencies list was revealed in a glittering ceremony in Birmingham on Monday night after an extensive judging process, which saw agents rated by tour operators and other suppliers, and then assessed by travel trade journalists. More than 950 travel agencies and branches put themselves forward for consideration for TTG’s Top 50 Travel Agencies 2017 – in association with Kuoni - from which a shortlist of 90 finalists across 18 categories was devised. TTG group editor Pippa Jacks said: “Now in its second year, our Top 50 Travel Agencies initiative has seen us scour the UK and Ireland to uncover its most dedicated and dynamic travel agency businesses. “It's been truly inspiring to hear how these agencies go above and beyond on a daily basis, to deliver extraordinary service and incredible value to their customers, and to support their local communities. “Our winners demonstrate that travel retailing in 2016 is a vibrant and successful business sector, and that – particularly on the high street – agents continue to prove their worth by delivering phenomenal customer service.” Bridget Keevil, proprietor of Travel Stop said, "I was thrilled to receive the award for Top Travel Agency East of England at Monday night’s event and although, of course, had hoped we would win, I was very aware that we were up against some very good competition. I feel that the Hadleigh shop, in a superb high street position in the lovely market town, has a super atmosphere. It is staffed by a team with a wealth of knowledge. The five team members have accrued a total of 168 years of experience between them – and I find this an exceptional statement to be able to make. In addition to this, they share a desire in wanting to provide an exceptional level of service which is what has made the Hadleigh office the success it is. This latest trophy will take pride of place next to the TTG Travel Awards 'Travel Seller of the Year' trophy which was won by Anita Crowson in 2013. These are two very special awards which Travel Stop is very proud to have received." The shortlisting stage was undertaken by a panel of 60 travel suppliers including airlines, tour operators and car hire providers, who rated hopeful agencies according to their business performance, customer service and innovation. To decide which shortlisted agencies made it into the Top 50 list, a TTG journalist visited each shortlisted agency to carry out an assessment. Transition Sudbury Event

The next event offered by Transition Sudbury and District will be a talk on “Skills for Sustainable Living” by Sarah Partridge from Orchard Barn on Friday, May 19th at St John’s Methodist Church, Sudbury, CO10 0NE, 6.30 for 7.00 p.m. Orchard Barn offers courses in traditional skills and natural building, using a variety of materials, and demonstrates how learning from the past can help us build a greener future for a healthier environment. Tickets for this event, priced at £3 per person, will be available from Lesley Ford-Platt on 01787 372171 or on the door. A recent Swap Shop in Great Cornard - now titled ‘Give and Take’ to more closely resemble what happens - was a great success, thanks to the number of people who brought in useful items which they no longer needed, for others take away. A vast quantity of household goods, books, clothing, gardening items and kitchen equipment, etc., were delivered and almost all of the items were taken away for use in other households. Some good quality warm coats were taken away to be given to the guests at Sudbury Community Kitchen, and the remaining goods were then collected for donation to the animal rescue charity Seesaw. Nothing went to waste! The intention of Give and Take is that useful goods are not needlessly thrown away when they can benefit other people. Not only is this a good way of recycling, but it reduces the amount of things going into landfill. So it is very much a win:win way of supporting the ideals of Transition – recycle, re-use and live more sustainably! www.sudburycommunitynews.co.uk

St Gregory’s Church Sudbury Music for Summer Evenings

Our lovely Organ has reached the point where it needs Hospitalization, TLC and money! The last major spending was over 30 years ago and Bishop’s who have looked after it since new in 1879 have advised that the heavy canvas on the bellows needs replacing and the whole instrument needs a thorough clean. This can be done in two stages. Bellows first - £3,000 + VAT. Cleaning second, and later - £7,000 + VAT. The good news is that I am hoping to raise the bellows money with four Happy Hour Concerts. The two we had last year for the grand piano were extremely successful as well as being excellent musical and social gatherings. Same format this year with some stunning musicians and speakers, all giving their services free. Trisha Eddington is returning with more of her wonderful “Theatrical Experiences”, with Charlotte King, a very talented up and coming young mezzo soprano singing some lighter theatrical songs. We start with the same line up as last year’s first concert; Penny Marsden, Elizabeth and me. In August our own Phyllis Felton is “Gossiping” about the Sudbury Workhouse with Rob Spivey (French horn) and Elizabeth Cobb (Flute). We are extremely lucky and grateful that on Friday June 2nd Stephen Cleobury, Organist and Director of Music at King’s College Cambridge, is most generously coming to play the Organ for us. Free admission, and we are really hoping that everyone will give as generously as last year and thoroughly enjoy these four very special occasions. VISIT US BY APPOINTMENT

Reg charity no 1124029 Ollie (the Black) Cat was caught napping recently when two ladies called in to see him. Unlike me, he hides himself away from visitors and was surprised to be discovered atop the hay where he keeps watch! And there’s plenty to see lately, Mum says we have converted to running a franchise for Noah and his Ark as the animals have been coming two by two. There’s Patch and Missie, a friendly pair of scruffy Jack Russells, several pairs of rabbits looking for gardens to occupy rather than tiny hutches and one year old sibling cats Nancy and Ronnie. Ollie says they are a bit bemused and nervous, wondering why they are shut up in a cattery but they will be fine when re-homed. The Fundraisers enjoyed a warm welcome in Whatfield at our Easter Fair which raised £1000 last month. Thank you to Hadleigh Maid for donating a big chocolate Easter egg. If you are out and about, see us at Gladwells Charity Day, Copdock Mill, IP8 3LA starting 9am on 13th May or visit our Summer Sale, 3rd June from 10.30am, St.Luke’s Church Hall, Tiptree, CO5 0SU. Next is our stall at the Long Melford Vintage Rally, 1st and 2nd July at Melford Hall followed by our Summer Dance, 1st July at Assington Village Hall, CO10 5LW, tickets via pfrenchm@aol.com or phone 01206 263113. We will also be at the Long Melford Street Fair on 9th July. The waters have receded so please visit the animals soon but don’t take on a pet on a whim, it is a serious business involving years of committed dedication. Animals are just as much of a responsibility as children, even a little dog like me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. A 1930s saloon which has been in the same family for more than 80 years will be among exhibits at Newton Green Golf Club’s first vintage vehicle show. The event is being staged on Sunday, August 6, to mark the 110th anniversary of the club, and as a special curtain up for the annual Jonathan Lambert Festival of Golf. Members, relatives and friends are invited to provide exhibits during an afternoon that will feature cream teas and a traditional jazz band. Golfer Mick Mills who, with his wife Marilyn, have a Vauxhall 12 DY5B, originally bought new by her father’s cousin at Halstead in 1934, will be showing it at the event. In the 1950s, the black, four-seater passed for ÂŁ40 to Marilyn’s father Alan Gentry, of Assington. He used it for many years while working as a lumber jack, and kept it going with spare parts from another old Vauxhall he bought for a fiver. Eventually, the car was abandoned and left to rust in Mr Gentry’s back garden. The engine was removed, put on blocks outside and started up each week. Twenty years ago, after his son carried out part restoration with a half-completed paint-job, he passed the vehicle to Marilyn and Mick. They found a north Essex mechanic who had worked on pre-war Vauxhall cars. He undertook a two-year restoration. A couple, who had been made redundant at an upholstery firm, took on re-fitting the leather interior. Marilyn recalls, “When my father, who is no longer with us, saw the restored car he had tears in his eyes. In the 1930s Vauxhall 12s were called a ‘farmer’s car’, because you had to have a bit of money to afford one. We still have the original log book, and a service manual covering the model from the thirties right through into the forties. We regard the car as a real family heirloom. “After restoring the vehicle we became members of a Vauxhall enthusiasts club for a time, and we have used the car to provide transport for a number of family weddings and other celebrations. Mick takes it out for a spin every three or four weeks to keep it going.â€?

Sudbury Mayor’s Report I recently visited some really picturesque villages that are only a few miles from Sudbury and Long Melford. I had only travelled through these villages when the road between Bury-St Edmunds and Sudbury was blocked usually through an accident and not in daylight! From the wild flowers, growing in the verges, to the delicate pastel blossoms garlanding the previously bare trees. Breathtaking and awesome views, with a fantastic variation of greenery in the fields and woodlands. April is such an amazing month, yet quite often in our busy lives we fail to just stop, look around and value our beautiful county of Suffolk. In future I have decided to take the time to visit these areas throughout the year instead of just going from A to B on the A134. Stop, take some photographs, then hopefully, when I have more time I will have fun with my pastels and paints and write some poetry. I was delighted to be invited to a concert performed by Sudbury Symphony Orchestra. Their Conductor Matthew Andrews led with his usual gusto and expertise. I was enthralled by the Clarinet Solo no 2 composed by Weber brilliantly played by William Knight. He played the entire piece without a note of music in front of him, an extremely talented young man. Their Summer Concert is on Sunday 25th June, again in St Peter’s Church, the programme will include a selection from Smetana, Rachmaninoff, Maussorgsky and Dvorak. On Palm Sunday Sudbury Choral Society performed Mendelssohns “Elijah”, again in that wonderful venue St Pater’s Church. The choir sang with so beautifully, obviously enjoying the majestic music and the soloists were brilliant; especially the baritone who had replaced the original Elijah at the last minute. His performance was moving and so powerful. I am looking forward to their next concert which will be in St Peter’s on Sunday July 2nd. They are performing “Songs from the Films” We are so fortunate to have such a high standard of musical entertainment in this small town. Sadly there were still empty seats at both of the concerts, tickets are so reasonable, especially if you compare these tickets costs in comparison to concerts in Bury St Edmunds, Colchester and Ipswich, and on our doorstep. St Gregory’s Church gave an “Easter Experience” to all the pupils from Tudor Primary School and St Gregory’s School under the direction of Canon Cheryl Collins with some members of the church helping, I think we were all semi or retired teachers. The pupils had a great time discovering the real as to the reason why we celebrate Easter and it is not just eating too many chocolate eggs. A huge thank you to everyone for all their help. I am looking forward to celebrating St George’s Day, although I have refused the request to dress up as a dragon (children that I have taught in the past may have called me one!) I sincerely hope the celebration is successful. Sudbury Open Gardens starts on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23rd these are always a joy to support. More important is the money raised for St Nicholas Hospice, so I hope the sun shines all weekend on gardeners and visitors and everyone gives generously to this vital charity.

We’ve undergone something of a transformation here at The Bridge. With a contemporary design and a spacious remodel inside, our café is a perfect place to meet with friends. There’s no rushing here. It’s all about taking your time and enjoying the ambience over freshly cooked snacks and lunches, prepared using locally sourced Suffolk ingredients. Ours is a café for all. With books and crafts for children, parents can get together with friends to savour a freshly brewed coffee, and tuck into our famous cheese scones or popular sausage rolls. If you’ve got time to spare, treat yourself to a bit of me time and have a go at our Paint Your Own Pottery in the studio. Or, maybe you just need a quiet space to get some work done, feel free to plug in your laptop and use our free Wifi. As the weather warms, our serene courtyard garden is a lovely space to relax with tea and cake in the centre of town.Pop by and say hello the coffee’s brewing and the scones are baking! Taking children on holiday following separation

More and more families are choosing to spend their annual holiday abroad. Whilst this can be a fun adventure for a family who live together, where the parents have separated there are additional issues which the parents will need to consider. Obtaining consent If you are planning a trip abroad with your child/children who are aged under 16 then you must obtain permission from every person who has Parental Responsibility for the child/children who you wish to take on holiday. If you fail to obtain consent then you may be accused of Child Abduction. A letter from the person with Parental responsibility may be sufficient but it is always appropriate to check with your travel company whether they have any specific requirements especially if visas are required for part of the trip. If your surname is different from your child then it would also be sensible to ensure that you travel with documentation to confirm your relationship with the child i.e. the child’s birth certificate. Also, if as a result of a divorce you have a different surname from your child then consider taking your Decree Absolute or a certified copy as evidence. If a Child Arrangements Order is already in place concerning the child/children then the parent in whose favour the order has been made may take the children abroad for 28 days without first having to obtain permission unless the court order states otherwise. Even if consent is not required it would be advisable to notify the other parent of your plans What if the other parent won't provide their consent? If the other parent with Parental responsibility is unwilling to provide their consent then it will be necessary to make an application to the local family court for a Specific Issue Order for permission to take the child abroad. Before you make the application you will need to attempt mediation. You will need to ensure that you make this application well in advance of your trip as it may take several months for the court to determine the application. There may also be issues if the parent who wishes to travel overseas is not in possession of the child's passport. Again, if the parent in possession of the passport refuses to hand the passport to the other parent then an order will be needed from the Family Court for the passports to be delivered to the other parent. There are several issues that need be considered in advance of booking the trip. If you need advise on any issues arising from this article then please contact Sue Wardropper at Holmes & Hills Solicitors. 96 North Street, Sudbury. www.holmes-hills.co.uk. 01787 275275

Peter Thorogood... “The great thing about democracy is that it gives every voter a chance to do something stupid” Art Sanders The unaccountability of our public so called servants has reached farcical levels. My niece, currently exiled as a midwife on St. Helena, has acquainted me with a tale of financial ineptitude of staggering proportions. The island, together with Ascension is placed more than a thousand miles off Africa. Fair enough one may think a useful place for exiling and bumping off Napoleon and pleasantly some vast distance from Westminster. The islands had, for many years been serviced by a leaking tub, the RMS St. Helena and the inhabitants happy in their isolation and free of interference from our politically inept masters. However, the gross incompetence that mars our more cosseted society was soon to blight their Atlantic paradise. Always keen to spend our money on a worthwhile cause our masters constructed a £286 million airport (from the much maligned overseas aid budget) and mothballed the tub. However, following the planning of a much trumpeted and grandiose opening it was soon discovered that the high winds that blight the place made it entirely unsuitable for large aircraft. The runway had already been shortened so that even larger aircraft couldn’t use it to, wait for it, preserve the habitat of a flightless bird! The said leaky tub was rapidly brought out of retirement and pressed into service. Unfortunately it soon broke down requiring a full dry dock overhaul. Meanwhile 4,600 inhabitants are now stranded awaiting provisions whilst Ministers prevaricate hoping it won’t be mentioned in the Reptile House. And those responsible for this expensive charade will not be called to account and sacked. In fact, the civil servant managing the farce, (obviously not particularly civil or servile) was rewarded for his ineptness, not with the sack but a well deserved knighthood. Investors, who have lost millions in building hotels and other projects to service the tourist influx, now wait, probably fruitlessly, for some compensation. Whichever minister signed this mismanaged project off had no idea of mid-Atlantic weather conditions; you just couldn’t make it up. Where are Gilbert and Sullivan when you need them? Now to our own soap opera known as the local elections. It appears that, thanks to a well orchestrated campaign, the farcical proposal to close North Street car park is finally off the agenda and common sense has prevailed. And now, with perfect timing, the long awaited by-pass is thoroughly on the agenda. Unfortunately this absolutely vital initiative is again in danger of being a political football, with both parties eager to score points. Jack Owen gets front page claiming this as a Labour priority first mooted years ago. The Tories have been “group photographed” claiming the initiative. To be fair, all appear genuine that, at long last, the scheme is viable and could be constructed by the end of the century! So, with an active MP pushing the case in the reptile house, massive new housing development justifying major transport links and a polluted and often gridlocked town, at last genuine hope. But Jack was right, our politicians must ignore petty party politics and fight together against any national or Suffolk CC indifference and ensure that the by-pass is the one priority and above the petty squabbling of party politics. Many of those local councillors have been around for years and have stood by whilst we have lost law courts, active policing and hospitals. But, they have the experience, and now the opportunity, to work in unison for once and leave Sudbury a lasting legacy. So stop the party electioneering and give us, your electors, that massive improvement to our town, a by-pass! So, how about no more Tories, Socialists, Greens or Raving Loonies, just Councillors working together for Sudbury? I see that my chum, Bob Darvell, has led the initiative to erect a fitting memorial to Far Eastern POW and campaigner Harold (Hummy) Lock. This hero was a great friend and we, together with many like minded townspeople, held regular reunion annual dinners at the Delphi Centre. A great number of veterans and former Japanese prisoners were wined, dined and entertained thanks to the efforts of this one man. Guests included Terry Waite, Lord Andrew Phillips and independent MP Martin Bell. It was he who finally shamed the government into raising some compensation for those “forgotten men”. Local people rallied round and very generously financed those very moving occasions. Likewise today Subrarians have contributed the full cost of the proposed memorial with stonemasons freely offering their skills and a local printer offering to republish Harold’s brilliant account of his imprisonment “The Forgotten Men”. Thus can a town make one so proud to be a resident. I think I may have been a bit of a nice guy for once, but why not. And another tribute to Roger Green, retiring chairman of the Friends of St. Peters, without whom and his supporters that iconic building, like Bel Vue, could have suffered possible ruin. Thanks Roger for your lasting legacy. Peter Thorogood - mandpthorogood@gmail.com

Rotary News

Members and friends enjoyed our recent President’s evening when the guest of honour was the conductor, pianist, arranger and composer Paul Bateman. Paul studied piano, organ, singing and ‘cello at the Guildhall School of Music in London, and began his musical life as an accompanist, chamber musician and opera repetiteur. He has conducted film music concerts all over the world and has recorded many film music pieces. Many of his recordings feature daily on Classic FM. He has accompanied a whole array of international artists including Bryn Terfel, Barbara Hendricks, Sumi Jo, Jessye Norman, Santana and Sir Paul McCartney. For Sarah Brightman he has conducted recordings of his own arrangements with the LSO and RPO and he gives concerts with her all over the world, most recently in Japan. Having just returned from Prague, he delighted us during the evening with reminiscences and anecdotes accompanied by his truly brilliant playing on a grand piano brought to the Mill Hotel especially for the occasion. A further treat was the vote of thanks, sung by our secretary to the tune of “Cwm Rhondda” accompanied of course by Paul Sudbury Rotary Club has had cause to celebrate this month because we have received the Rodney Huggins Award for our work with schools and the environment. This national Rotary award is made annually and our past president and current chair of Environment and Youth committee, Gill Norton, travelled to Manchester to receive the award from Rotarian Rodney Huggins himself who observed that this was the most deserving application he had received in many years. We are grateful to the many people who responded to our street collection last month to send funds to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) which is aiming to provide immediate aid and avoid delay in supporting those most in need because of the devastating famine in countries in East Africa. We have been able to forward the sum of £400 to DEC as a result. Crucial Crew appears to have been a success once again with over 700 children attending; as ever we are grateful to our many friends and the organisations who help us with this event and of course to the schools and their teachers who bring the children along. Crucial Crew started seventeen years ago as a way of helping young children aged between 9 and 11 to understand the dangers of everyday life. Amongst the comments we have received are: Crucial Crew "Gives children first hand experience and knowledge they require in difficult situations.....more valuable than anything we could teach in the classroom." and "The scenarios provide a safe environment to enable the children to consider their actions in situations that would affect their personal safety .... An opportunity to learn valuable life skills." Members helped once again with the regular Litter Pick organised by Tesco and further events are planned later in the year We are now looking forward to presenting our annual Prom Concert, which will be held this year on Saturday May 13th in St Peters, Sudbury featuring the Colchester Army Wives. This year’s concert will include a “world premiere” of an arrangement of Prom favourites compiled by our secretary Roger Green. Tickets (£10 each) are available from Sudbury Tourist office, Compact Music or Sudbury Rotary Reservations (07989 243303). Tickets will also be available on the door. Under 16s Admission will be £5 If you would like more information about our club and our activities please contact our secretary Roger Green on 07341 290415 or look us up on our website www.sudburyrotary.com or simply Google Sudbury Rotary Club Rotarian Tony Platt

The Ladykillers

Following the success of their last two productions, Sudbury Dramatic Society have begun rehearsals for their next production which is The Ladykillers at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre from Tuesday 9th to Saturday 13th May at 7.45pm. Classic black comedy The Ladykillers is written by Graham Linehan, author of Father Ted and of The IT Crowd, and based on the original Ealing Comedy. The original production was a huge success in London’s West End. In a house near Kings Cross station a criminal gang take rooms with a sweet little old lady and her diseased parrot. Posing as amateur musicians, they proceed to plot to rob the mail train but they reckon without their determined landlady and, as their plans start coming off the rails, the comedy darkens and the gang begins to disintegrate. The question of who will survive and who will face the music starts to take some unexpected turns. The Ladykillers is directed by Malcolm Hollister who directed the successful 39 Steps last year and the recent Quay Theatre pantomime Treasure Island. The Ladykillers is on at The Quay Theatre Tuesday 9th to Saturday 13th May at 7.45pm and tickets are available now from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury.org.uk Stoke-by-Nayland WEA presents its Annual Day School at Stoke-by-Nayland Village Hall on Saturday, 15th July, 10 am

‘Defending The Harbour’ Landguard Fort, Felixstowe by Dave Wood

Landguard Fort is situated on a peninsular, opposite Harwich and where the Rivers Stour and Orwell join to flow into the North Sea. It has a long rich history, but its major triumph is the preventing of the last full scale invasion of England by the Dutch on 2nd July 1667 - exactly 350 years ago this summer! By 1900 the Fort was obsolete, until the problem of reliability of large bore breech loading artillery was resolved. The Fort was manned throughout both World Wars, but by the 1950s the rocket age had arrived and in 1956 Coastal Artillery was finally closed down. Dave Wood has been involved with Landguard Fort since the 1980s and was present when the first guided tours were carried out. Total cost is just £19 including coffee on arrival and the talk by Dave Wood in the morning - followed by a buffet lunch. In the afternoon a coach will take us to the Landguard Fort for a visit. We will have the opportunity to enjoy a guided tour of the Fort. The coach fare, entry to the Fort and the guided tour are included in the cost. Tea and snacks are available in the Fort or in a nearby beach cafe (cost not included). Suitable footwear should be worn. Early booking is recommended. To book please contact Sue Whiteley - 01787 210945 or email: whiteleysa@hotmail.co.uk

Stoke by Nayland travelled to a windswept Burnham on Crouch to play the first round of the 2017 Jubilee Cup. In the Jubilee Cup the teams are comprised of 12 players; of which 6 will be in the handicap range 12- 16 and 6 in the handicap range 17 - 24. Matches are played in a matchplay format and consist of 6 single games, played off scratch, between players of the first group and 3 Four Ball Better Ball games played between players of the second group. Teams compete, initially, in leagues before reaching the knockout stages. Stoke ended the singles with five wins and a half point before going on to clinch victory with two wins in the paired format. This was a very pleasing win for Captain Richard Bland, especially playing away from home and in cold and windy conditions on an exposed course.

Sudbury Bowls Club Annual Indoor Club Championships

At the finals of the annual Club Championships at Sudbury Indoor Bowls Club in Quay Lane, one player stood head and shoulders above the rest winning an impressive five trophies. Graham Rowland had an energetic weekend; he played two events on the Friday and a record four on the Saturday. On Sunday he was playing as part of the club team who triumphed in the County Mixed Competition Final against Beccles at Ipswich where Sudbury took the champions trophy.

Emphatic Win for Stoke by Nayland Seniors

Stoke by Nayland started their 2017 Essex Seniors Championship campaign with an emphatic 10.5 – 0.5 win at home against The Notleys. New Essex Golf Union rules for this competition meant that players had to go out in handicap order. On this occasion it meant that all of the Stoke team had to give shots to their opponents with the exception of Steve Tree in the last match who neither gave, nor received shots. The match was played in cool, blustery conditions on the Constable course which had become very firm due to the lack of any recent meaningful rain. Richard Cross gave the home team a good start, winning his match 3 &2 and this was followed by the only halved match, the remaining nine games all going to the home side. Results of note were an 8 & 6 victory for Steve Tree over visiting Captain Mike James and a 6 & 5 win for Mike Moore. Despite the margin of the victory, all matches were played in an excellent spirit and visiting Captain, Mike James, congratulated Stoke on the victory and wished them well in the next round. Stoke Team: Richard Cross, John Smith, Andy Higginson, Trevor Samways, Allan Smith, Graham Vandervord, Tony Carman, Reg Reid, Paul Sandfield, Mike Moore, Steve Tree.
