Sudbury Dramatic Society The Railway Children Sudbury Dramatic Society are following up their successful production of The Ladykillers with an adaptation of Edith Nesbit’s story of The Railway Children on at Sudbury’s Quay Theatre from Tuesday 4th to Saturday 8th July at 7.45pm. This adaptation of Edith Nesbit’s book by Mike Kenny is the same script as the one that has been successfully performed at railway stations in London and York, although SDS can’t provide a real-life steam train at The Quay! When their father is wrongly arrested, three children and their mother are forced to move to the country near to the village railway station. There, they make friends with Perks the station Porter, the travellers on the train, they rescue a lost Russian and an injured runner, before being finally being reunited with their father. A grown-up Bobbie, Peter and Phyllis take us through the story as they recall the time when they really were The Railway Children. The Railway Children is being directed by Linda Dowdall who has directed and acted in various SDS productions, including a recent cameo as a little old lady in The Ladykillers! Linda says ‘this is a timeless, feel good story and Bobbie’s cry My Daddy Oh my Daddy at the end remains one of the most recognisable and evocative lines in children’s literature’ The Railway Children is on at The Quay Theatre Tuesday 4th to Saturday 8th July at 7.45pm and tickets are available now from The Quay Theatre Box Office on 01787 374745 or online at www.quaysudbury.org.uk

After the very successful St George’s Day Country fair, attended by almost 1500 people, there are just two raffle prizes needing to be linked to their winners. It has not been possible to contact the winners via the telephone numbers on the tickets, so if Veronica with pink ticket 105 or Edward with blue ticket 97 could contact lesleyfordplatt@rocketmail.com with their correct home telephone number, arrangements will be made to get the prizes to them. Feedback for the event has now been analysed with all visitors saying how much they enjoyed the entertainment and the numerous stalls, where local voluntary and community organisations were able to raise funds for their work. The stalls were busy, and the marquee was full from one end to the other. Having arrived with over 300 plants for their stall, the Sudbury Society sold all but 10 of them; the cakes on offer from All Saints Church, Little Cornard, were sold within the first hour, but they also had plenty of bric-a-brac available to keep the bargain hunters busy. All the Quay Lane sports clubs reported a successful day, with 70 participants in the Hockey Club’s ‘beat the goalie’ challenge and the tennis club reporting “a wonderful attendance, at one time needing to use six coaches at the same time to cater for the number of children taking part – so many that they lost count”. The queue at the Cricket Club for their bacon sandwiches and burgers seemed never-ending and there was demand for afternoon tea and cake too. The weather played its part by staying fine and dry and Radio Suffolk sent an Outside Broadcast reporter to interview stallholders and visitors. Only children from St Gregory’s school had entered the art and writing competitions, so all the winners came from there. Among the many families were at least two children dressed as St George, one carrying her own dragon – both of them entered the Fancy Dress competition along with an Easter bunny! The award-winning gymnastics team from Pot Kiln Primary school delighted visitors with their demonstration, as did members of Sudbury Phoenix Community Marchers, who invited visitors to join in at the end of their display. The Friendship Dancers also involved the audience with their Eastern European folk dances. Most popular was the Punch and Judy show and other children’s entertainment provided by Paul Pleasants. There was something for everyone to enjoy.

Presentation to thank out-going Chairman of the Friends of St Peter’s The outgoing chairman of the Friends of St Peter’s, Roger Green, was presented with gifts recently to thank him for his service during 27 years in the role. The Friends of St Peter’s is the charity responsible for looking after St Peter’s church in the centre of Sudbury – one of the town’s landmark community buildings. Gifts, which included dinner and an overnight stay at the Great House in Lavenham, came from other members of the Friends of St Peter’s and Sudbury Rotary Club where Roger is secretary. The presentation was made at St Peter’s on Saturday evening during an interval in a concert featuring the Colchester Military Wives, which included a performance from Roger at the organ. Sudbury mayor Sue Ayres said a few Photo: Sudbury Rotary Club words while fellow long-serving member of the Friends of St Peter’s, Joan Garden, also made a valedictory speech. Roger has been involved with the Friends of St Peter’s in some capacity since 1973. During his tenure as chairman, St Peter’s in Market Hill has become established as a hub for events in Sudbury including farmers markets, art exhibitions, music concerts, Thursday’s popular Kettle and Fish café and the annual Christmas tree festival. The venue attracts around 60,000 visitors every year, making it one of the most used redundant churches in the UK. Roger will be replaced by Peter Gray who has stepped up from vice-chairman. St Gregory’s Church Sudbury Happy Hour Concerts One down, three to go! Hugest thanks to all who came to our first Happy Hour Concert and who gave so generously. An excellent start to the Organ Restoration Fund. The audience enjoyed a social time afterwards with a glass of wine and it was lovely to see a really good mix of people from within our church and from the town. The next one is on Friday June 2nd starting at 7pm. We are very lucky that Stephen Cleobury, Director of Music at Kings College Cambridge, is very generously giving a recital on our organ in aid of the Restoration Fund. We really need to give him a splendid audience so please spread the word and tell all your friends. Hope to see as many of you as possible at St Gregory’s for this very special occasion. Two Sudbury area schools and a care home in the town have teamed up with a small Suffolk charity to help tackle the UK’s biggest killer – dementia. People living longer means Alzheimer and other forms of the condition overtook heart disease as the most common cause of death last year, it has been reported to Government ministers. Heart disease was responsible for 11.5 per cent of 529,655 deaths in 2015, or 60,818 people. But for the first time this was overtaken by 61,686 people dying with dementia. “The numbers dying of dementia can only get higher as we live longer,” says Tony Gearing, founder of the Stradishall-based charity YOPEY, which stands for Young People of the Year. Tony has been setting up ‘YOPEY Befriender’ schemes, where young people go into care homes and visit elderly residents, for three years. “Typically twothirds of residents have dementia and often relatives stop visiting as they cannot cope with the changes the diseases cause.” Tony has set up the the third YOPEY Befriender scheme in Suffolk – two have been running in Bury St Edmunds since last year – pairing Catchpole Court nursing home in Walnut Tree Lane, Sudbury, with the Ormiston Sudbury Academy in Tudor Road, and the Thomas Gainsborough School in Wells Hall Road, Great Cornard. “People with dementia can still communicate, if only visitors are patient,” said Tony, who is a Dementia Champion with the Alzheimer’s Society. Marie Smale, manager of Catchpole Court nursing home, said: “We welcome people coming in from the community to mix with their senior citizens. Our residents were particularly pleased to see young people and are looking forward to meeting them again every week.” Thomas Gainsborough School invited Tony to give an assembly to year 12 and the school is pleased some of its most caring students have decided to engage with the community in this way. Director of Sixth Form Kenny Alexander said: ”It's important to get young people involved in the community. YOPEY Befriender is a great way for our students to give something back to society and connect with their elders, whilst developing such vital skills as communication, empathy and independence. “For those seeking a career in medicine or health and social care YOPEY Befriender gives them first hand experience of working with those suffering from dementia. We're looking forward to continuing our work with YOPEY over the coming years." Among the Thomas Gainsborough YOPEY Befrienders are 17-year-old Sudbury twins Chloe and Eden Arkesden. About visiting Catchpole Court care home Chloe said: “After going to the care home and seeing the smile that I put onto someone’s face today it makes me 100 per cent sure that I want to continue to volunteer there. I am also thinking about what I can do in the future.” http://www.facebook.com/YOPEY where you’ll find YOPEY's Facebook community!

Sunday Special! Sudbury Symphony Orchestra is very pleased to welcome the prize winning saxophonist, Finn McEwen, to be their soloist for Ronald Binge’s Concerto for alto saxophone in their concert on Sunday 25th June. Finn started playing the saxophone at the age of 10 and is a student at the Royal Academy of Music. He plays classical and jazz and has played at many prestigious venues including the Barbican, Ronnie Scotts and many places in between. His saxophone playing shows just how powerful, versatile and exciting this ever popular instrument can be. If you thought the saxophone was just for jazz this concert will open you to a whole new world of possibilities. Ronald Binge’s saxophone concerto was commissioned by the BBC in 1956 as part of their annual International Festival of Light Music and the concert continues in this vein with Malcolm’s Arnold’s light hearted Little Suite for Orchestra composed in 1945. Plus we have Gustav Holst’s Somerset Rhapsody based on English folk songs but crafted into an orchestral piece of real sophistication. Another highlight of the concert will be Rimsky Korsakow’s re-working of Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain. This is a brilliant musical depiction of a witches sabbath which was famously used by Walt Disney in Fantasia. Elgar’s Chanson de Nuit and Chanson de Matin will be making an appearance at the concert. And as we have such a brilliant saxophone player we could not resist adding the Old Castle movement and a Promenade from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition which both feature the saxphone. We hope you'll join us for a great evening's performance. Sunday 25th June 2017 at 6.00pm St Peter’s Church, Market Hill, Sudbury CO10 1TL Tickets: Adult £12, Child £2 from Compact Music, North Street, Sudbury & Sudbury Tourist Information (library). Email: tickets@sudburysymphonyorchestra.com A limited number of tickets will be available on the door. www.sudburysymphonyorchestra.com

On April 27th a stalwart group of members set out on a cold wet day for the first of the summer garden visits. In the morning, we arrived at The Dip on the Hill, at Ousden, Newmarket, and were given a warm welcome by Dr and Mrs. Geoffrey Ingham, who created this wonderful architectural, largely evergreen, garden. Situated on a south facing hill, meandering pathways led us through cloud- pruned hedges, sculptural trees, shrubs and groundcover. Pines and a grove of Philyrea latifolia, palms and a large bamboo, were underplanted with ferns, and lily of the valley were just beginning to flower. Dr. Ingham explained how he shaped and pruned large overgrown shrubs to form the sculptural shapes he needed. A fascinating visit to a highly original garden. In the afternoon, we were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Alastair Robinson, who have created a stunning garden at Ousden House. Despite the wind and rain, they guided us round the herbaceous borders, rose garden, summerhouse lawn and borders, ornamental woodland and lake, (beside which stood a wonderful sculpture of a mare and foal). A spectacular long double crinklecrankle yew hedge leads from the clock tower, and a moat garden with gentle fountains was densely planted with moisture loving plants. There were so many rambling paths leading us through avenues of flowering cherry, and scented flowering shrubs, that it was an absolute joy to explore it all, even in the rain! To warm us all up, we were treated to a wonderful tea, with sandwiches and home-made cakes. I will certainly be going back to visit again, when it is opened for the NGS on June 11th, hopefully in better weather. The next outing to Spencers, at Great Yeldham, is on the 4th June, followed by the Summer Social at Stoke Priory, Stoke by Nayland on June 27th. Full details of these events will be found on the website. Non-members are welcome to join us for the outings, and membership is still available at a very reasonable annual subscription, so do contact our secretary, Matthew Long on 01449 741551. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Rotary News April started off with a team of Rotarians and partners representing the Club at an event of “Call My Bluff” at All Saints church hall, great fun was had by all, and all for a good cause. The team did not disgrace the Club finishing fourth. Later in the month Rotary organised the annual Open Gardens event with the St Nicholas Hospice – this year possibly the busiest ever. We raised over £4000 for the Hospice and £500 for Rotary charities thanks to the generosity of those who make their gardens available and of course all the people who visit them. The outgoing Mayor, Sue Ayres, opened the event and then found herself serving afternoon tea – the Mayor in all her regalia – assisted by her grandchildren!. This year it coincided with the St George’s Day Celebration at the Cricket ground and I think many people took the opportunity to take in both events Early in May we held a Stroke Awareness Day. We were able to give many people an “all clear” but also advised others to seek immediate help. We very much hope that they did. Our annual Prom Concert – the 40th – was held a little earlier this year on a glorious Spring evening last month. It was good to welcome so many people to enjoy the Colchester Military Wives Choir who provided a superb evening with a very varied programme and also including a selection of Prom favourites put together by our secretary Roger Green. In fact he gave the first public performance of his work on the organ in St Peters. Roger, who has just retired as Chair of the Friends of St Peters after 40 years, was – as he said himself – ambushed at the start of the concert when he was presented with a whole range of gifts from his many friends and well-wishers from the Rotary Club, St Peters and the Town Hall. The concert raised just over £400 for Rotary charities. Recent speakers have included Debbie Stearne of St Gregorys School talking about children with learning disabilities and the many initiatives which they have to help these children to be able to have a fulfilling role later in life. The Bridge Project students take to the stage Budding thespians at The Bridge Project lit up the stage last month (March) when they took part in a contemporary theatre production to a sold-out audience at DanceEast in Ipswich. Eight students from the Sudbury-based Charity, which supports adults with learning difficulties, performed in The Inkwell, a production inspired by the short stories of children’s Bridge Project students Josiah Varcoe, Rosie author, Shaun Tan, and Eagling, Claire Dovell rehearse for the explored tales of dreams DanceEast production of The Inkwell. and imagination through movement, animation and puppetry. The Bridge Project was one of nine groups to take part in the show, which was organised by DanceEast. Choreographers from DanceEast visited The Bridge Project’s cafĂŠ in Gainsborough Street for further rehearsal sessions. Demand for tickets was so great that extra seating was set out for both performances on the day. Jo Searle, Chief Executive Officer at The Bridge Project, said: “Our students thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the DanceEast production of The Inkwell. It was a great experience and allowed them to focus on their talents, skills and explore their own imagination in new and exciting ways. “After the show all the students said they really enjoyed the experience of being on stage and telling a story. There were so many people in the audience, it was great to see such support for a regional community production.â€? The Bridge Project was established in 1995 to help those with learning difficulties in the community. Its cafĂŠ on Gainsborough street is open to everyone, with all money made going straight back into the charity, to support the services it offers the community. Its services include various activity programmes for adults with learning disabilities such as cooking, hospitality, ICT and administration, ceramics and pottery, and digital media skills. It also runs Open Door drop in sessions for people managing mental health issues, dementia support meetings, and a weekly lunch club for over 65s. The Inkwell had two showings on March 11 and offered students of The Bridge Project the opportunity to work alongside other groups from across the region, including students from Thomas Gainsborough High School in Gt Cornard, Sudbury, Chelmondiston C of E Primary School in Ipswich, Eye Arts Club, Cedrus House Care Home and Stowupland High School in Stowmarket. Amie Butcher, Assistant Headteacher at Thomas Gainsborough School in Gt Cornard Sudbury, said the 11 to 15-year-old pupils who took part would really like to work with The Bridge Project again in the future. She said, “The Thomas Gainsborough’s gifted and talented dance group really enjoyed working with other schools and community groups and in particular The Bridge Project. Our girls were inspired by their dedication and confidence on stage! “Our pupils said it was really uplifting to work alongside students from The Bridge and would really like to work in conjunction with them on another dance project. Our pupils showed maturity in their engagement with the Bridge Project and gave them positive praise and feedback.â€? Naomi Brand, dance teacher at Stowupland High School in Stowmarket, said the 20 students from Years 7 to 9 who took part found the experience an incredible opportunity. She said: “It was a really good opportunity for our students to be part of a professional performance and work alongside people they don’t know. They not only learned about dance, but saw their own ideas incorporated into the final performance. It opened their eyes to new experiences and aspirations to achieve more than they imagined they could.â€? Kerry Palmer-Long, Deputy Headteacher and Year 6 teacher at Chelmondiston Primary School near Ipswich said pupils found the experience inspirational. She explained: “After the show the children said they felt it was a great opportunity to work with people from such a diverse background, with people they may not normally have had the chance to interact with and learn from. A project like this is about bringing people together and enables everyone to achieve something they didn’t realise they were capable of. “Pupils came out saying it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, that it will be a lasting memory and they felt inspired. From my point of view it was wonderful to see children who may not normally have performed on stage, to do so, and see their confidence grow as a result.â€?

Show day dawned bright and sunny and record crowds came out in force once again to visit our local Show. Despite having 2.5inches of rain over the 3 days before, the showground was in a good condition thanks to Patrick Goudkuil, Show Director and his team who had worked so hard to get everything ready. The highlight of the Show for many were The Devils Horsemen Cossack Riders who thrilled the crowds with their skill and bravery. Many gasps could be heard as they galloped across the ring performing amazing acrobatic feats. Hadleigh Festival of Gardening and Art got off to a great start with many taking the opportunity for a “selfie” amongst the flowers. The Food Hall and cookery demonstration area was also a must for food lovers. The Education area proved popular in its new location with the Sheep Show, art work from local schools and chicken and egg crafts and activities. There were lots of chances to try new things this year – from driving a tractor simulator or a mini digger to trying out archery with the Sudbury Tudor Archers or British Cycling’s mini mountain bike course. Numerous local trade stands were showcasing their businesses whilst the Flower Show and Rural Craft Marquees were, as usual, filled with a spectacle of colour and talented craftsmen. The Art Tent once again showcased art, pottery and sculptures from many local artists. The Hadleigh Farmers’ Agricultural Association would like to thank everyone who has supported or visited the show this year and especially all our trade stands who were patient and supportive during a wet setup. We hope to see you again next year on 19th May 2018.

F.M.P.S Vintage Rally 2017 The vintage rally that was unfortunately cancelled last year due to the bad weather leading up to the show is going a head this year at Melford Hall on the 1st and 2nd of July from 10 am to 5 pm.. With ring displays on both days it's a real family day out. there's a big area of trade and craft stalls. and a great food court next to the licenced bar. On Saturday evening there will be a disco at the bar and some of the food court opening till late. we hope you can all make it. www.melfordrally.co.uk Sudbury Gainsborough Probus Club presents

Sudbury & District The Royal British Legion Those of us who were running the Table at the St George’s Day Fare in Sudbury on April 23rd enjoyed meeting so many people and we thank you for supporting our Bottle Stall which was all in aid of the Poppy Appeal. Many thanks. July 1st we shall have the Branch Gazebo at the Gt Cornard Fete which runs from 1.00 p.m. to 5.00 p.m. this year and on Sunday 23rd July we shall again be meeting lots of people at the Party in the Park event. Which takes us on to the Launch of the 2017/18 Poppy Appeal to be held outside the Town Hall on Saturday 28th October. Collectors will be busy for the following two weeks and we are always looking for new Collectors and helpers. Give Stuart a call on 01787 374277 if you would like to help this year. The 11th November falls on the Saturday before Remembrance Sunday so we shall have the usual Two Minutes Silence outside the Town Hall at 11.00 a.m. on Saturday. The Parade will be led again by the Colchester Pipes and Drums and leave the Market Hill at 2.00 p.m. If you would like to be in the Parade come and join us on the Market Hill before we march off. Almost there! Bell Appeal All Saints Church, Little Cornard The next fund-raising evening at All Saints Church, Little Cornard will take place on Saturday June 24, at 7.00 p.m. when well-known group The Accidentals will present a programme of songs in their own unique style. An entertaining and enjoyable evening is guaranteed, with wine served in the interval. With recent generous donations and other funds promised, the appeal to restore the bells at this ancient church is now only £20,000 short of its £100,000 target. There is a final push to raise the remaining money so that work can begin on this ambitious restoration project in October of this year. Because there really are bats in the belfry, work is restricted to taking place between October and March and it is vital that the work is completed early next year so that the bells can be in place in time to be rung again on 11 November 2018 to commemorate the Armistice of WW1. The concert is being offered free of charge, but donations to the Tony Moore Memorial Bell Fund will be welcomed. For more information, contact Robert Mackman on 01787 228077. Donations to the Tony Moore Memorial Bell Fund may be sent direct to Robert at Cobnut Cottage, 4 Upper Road, Little Cornard, Sudbury, CO10 0NZ (cheques payable to Little Cornard PCC (Bell Fund Account)).

Question: Why would you want a Shepherd’s Hut?... In our world of fast moving, quick downloading, web connecting tech talking, it appears that there is still a little piece of us that craves that teeny bit of comfortable, quiet simplicity. Shepherd's Huts are not a new fad - they really were just a hut for a shepherd in the wistful old days of Thomas Hardy, yet with a little tasteful modernity, they present themselves as a very useful space indeed. Now kitted out to the same build standards as you would require for a domestic house; insulation; double glazing; vapour barriers; lighting; sockets (and yes-USB ports). Add in your choice of internal fittings - beds, table, woodburner, storage, even the kitchen sink, and you have an instant mini home to use at your discretion. Make it an office, a guest bedroom, a studio, a retreat, a workshop, a rentable unit - the possibilities are endless, and all at a fraction of the cost of a similar sized space added to your house. An aesthetically pleasing addition to your garden, and able to be re-purposed as your needs change, a Stour Valley Shepherd's Hut will provide you with a robust build and top end finish in your new personalised space- so individual to you that you will want to take it with you when you move (oh-and you can!). At Stour Valley Shepherd's Huts we would like to suggest that the question should really be: Why wouldn't you want a Shepherd's Hut?.. Please feel free to take a look at our web site: stourvalleyshepherdshuts.co.uk or give us a good old fashioned ring (Landline: 01787 373570 Mobs: 07817 540551/ 07800 918016) We would love to talk to you about our beautiful huts, and perhaps help you to design one of your very own

Work gets underway creating new homes in Long Melford Award-winning housebuilder Kier Living Eastern has started work on building its exciting new homes in Long Melford. Senior staff have dug the first piece of turf at the site, off Rodbridge Hill, to signify the start of the development, which will include play equipment and open spaces for residents when finished. In total, the new development will see 77 new homes built in the sought-after Suffolk village. David Thomas, Kier Living Eastern’s sales and marketing director, said construction workers are now on site carrying out preliminary works for the homes. He said: “We are delighted to have started work on our new development in Long Melford. “It is a wonderful village and the site really benefits from beautiful views of the countryside. “These superb homes will be perfect for couples, expanding families and those looking to downsize and we very much look forward to continuing to work with the community in the future to make these homes a success.” Kier Living Eastern was granted planning permission for the development following consultations with residents and local authorities. Foundations are expected to be put in at the site as early as July, and new homes could be available as early as spring 2018. The parasites of the Reptile House are now trousering an extra £1,049 a year bringing their excessive basic annual remuneration up to £75,011, plus their questionable “expenses” and pension entitlements. And do we really need 650 of them, plus 850 of their ermine clad cronies in the adjacent Invertebrates enclosure? Well, we are shortly to hold an election when the choice of hand picked hacks and political jokes will be offered up for selection to an increasingly cynical electorate. It is not as if they can even govern our once fair isle in an efficient manner. A bunch of PC public servants deemed it correct to ban smoking in our ancient prisons. The completely overstretched staff, victims of cost cutting (there is no votes to be gained from a well governed prison service) are given the task of officiating. So one gets a lengthy stretch and is incarcerated for the protection of society. Smoking deemed anti-social and a danger to others is banned. However, access to illegal drugs, in a so called secure environment, is freely available to all that can afford it! If you are not so addicted when first imprisoned you will be when freed. A succession of Home Secretaries has been responsible for the mismanagement of the Prison System for years. Many of our inner city prisons occupy exceptionally valuable real estate and should be demolished or converted into housing. The massive profits earned could easily finance modern, secure prison stock offering the opportunity to adequately staff the system and offer appropriate employment and education to prisoners. Apparently the proposed sale of Holloway prison alone is valued at over £200 million. However, such a windfall could soon be squandered and any new development subject to the Private Finance Initiative scheme where politician’s city chums put us in hock for generations. They just can’t be trusted! However, the Euro remainers amongst us should not be too smug regarding the corrupt inadequacies of Westminster. Brussels is equally as rotten. A very brave German journalist Martin Tillack sort to publish an account of the fraud and corruption endemic in the EU. Employed by the comparatively fearless Stern magazine (gutless and compliant British press take note) he was soon arrested and his material, computers etc. seized by the anonymous and unelected bureaucrats. The same actions have been taken against others who have sort to expose rotten practices. It took the actions of the independent European Court of Human Rights (a non EU body) to grant justice to Tillack. Here, in the ex-borough of Sudbury our historic town continues to decline into a state of neglect. Take a stroll down North Street. The excellent Jaqui’s café closed, Sulby House, although an architectural monstrosity, a place of gainful employment about to be housing, and Argos fast falling into dereliction. Further down, passing either more closed or charity shops, the awful frontage of Sports Direct closing and now the accolade of the town’s ugliest and most uncared building must be given to the once Poundland shop. Surely Babergh DC must have some powers to ensure that although empty no shop can be left to so mar our streets. It is frankly a disgraceful blot on Sudbury. A stroll takes in the once beautiful Bel Vue, left to rot so Babergh can demolish this fine façade without criticism. The vacant Post Office and much more. A true example of how our councillors really care about our town! And I haven’t even mentioned Hamilton Road. If our elected Sudbury or Babergh Councillors have not the power to remedy the situation, what the hell is the point of them? Now for a tale of gross incompetence and misjudgement. Suffolk County Councillors decided to hand over the management of our highways to Kier citing the need for greater professionalism and standards. Well, the result for the people of Suffolk has been an unmitigated disaster. Maybe Councillor James Finch, grandly titled “Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport” could inform us as to when he will either sack this incompetent shower or stand down himself. They have failed to meet 50% of their targets and have left our roads in a dire state of repair. Shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall I was in East Germany where the highways were in like condition. A few miles into the West and all was pristine, like travelling over the border into Essex actually. So Councillor Finch, the ball’s in your court, man up and sack them and chat to your opposite number in Essex, or find someone that will. Sudbury’s Queens Road, recently resurfaced (scarcely a priority) had to be again closed whilst resultant repairs were carried out to the water mains. For God’s sake, how much longer do we have to suffer this dire incompetence? Time for a Guinness. All complaints and threats to mandpthorogood@gmail.com Peter Thorogood

Helping a loved-one with money for a house deposit? Here is how you can protect your money. The Bank of Mum and Dad, as it has been called, has now become one of the country’s largest mortgage lenders, providing assistance with 29% of all mortgages, according to Legal & General. The average amount being lent by parents and grandparents to assist with raising the necessary deposit is expected to reach over £21,000 in 2017. But how can parents protect this money? What if your son, daughter or grandchild separate from the partner they are buying a home with? What if they buy the property alone but a partner moves in at some point in the future? What if my relative is buying the property alone? It is still wise to protect the money you are gifting them if they intend to move a partner into the property. We would recommend a Cohabitation Agreement to make it clear that it is not intended that the party moving in will have a financial interest in the property. How can the money be protected? The most common means of protecting a gifted deposit is for the person/s purchasing the property to enter into a Declaration of Trust which can dictate how the property is to be treated. For instance, a Declaration of Trust can provide for one party to own a greater share of the property, in light of the fact they have contributed all, or a greater amount, of the deposit. Alternatively, it can stipulate that should the property be sold, the deposit money is returned to the relevant party before the remaining sale proceeds are divided. Another means of protecting deposit money is by way of a formal loan agreement. The agreement can stipulate that there is no interest to be paid and it may not even be expected that the loan will actually ever be repaid. In the event that your son, daughter or grandchild separates form their partner, or a future partner, the loan used for the deposit should be protected from any separation settlement. We would also recommend a Cohabitation Agreement Your solicitor can assist you in drawing up a contract detailing the terms upon which you and your partner will live in the property. The agreement can deal with who pays for what and what will happen in the event of separation in the future. The more you can agree in advance, the more conflict you can resolve when emotions are running high and the relationship between you is difficult. For advice on lending money to help with a deposit, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 and speak with Sue Wardropper

Sudbury Choral Society’s Summer Concert 2017 After their excellent rendition of Elijah in their 70th anniversary concert in April, Sunday 2nd July sees the Sudbury Choral Society move from their standard fare of oratorios and classical music to Songs from the Silver Screen. Long Melford Parish Report Councillor Richard Kemp Tresco, New Road, Long Melford, Suffolk CO10 9JY 01787 378149 richard.kemp@suffolk.gov.uk

Suffolk County Council Elections 2017 I would like to express a huge and sincere vote of thanks for the overwhelming support I have received from the electorate at a difficult election time. There was an impressive 35.6% turnout for the vote! I look forward to serving ALL residents within Melford Ward of Suffolk County Council. Warning to residents with Solar Panels after victims targeted Suffolk Trading Standards is asking residents to be vigilant if they receive a call from energy saving companies claiming they'll be able to save them money. Since the turn of the year Suffolk Trading Standards have received a large number of complaints from residents who own solar panels, with energy saving companies claiming they have an energy saving device that will save them money, or offering to check their ‘system’ for free. Last month, two elderly residents were contacted by such companies, convincing them that they and their properties were at risk. One victim, in Lowestoft, was told the lid to her water tank was loose, which then ran the risk of overflowing onto the electrics in the house, and electrocuting her. The resident was told they would need to pay the company £7,500 up front in cash, and that work would need to start as soon as possible. The victim went straight to the bank to withdraw the money, but fortunately the bank staff contacted Suffolk Trading Standards before any money was passed over. The second victim, in Ipswich, was told their solar panels needed to be serviced. When the trader took a look at the panels, they informed the victim that the company that had fitted them had gone out of business and that the installation was dangerous, as a power save unit had not been installed, creating a fire risk to their property. They were told the repair would cost £3,295 and the victim paid a deposit of £800. The trader has not yet returned to carry out the work and despite the victim trying to cancel the work, they have not yet received a refund. Suffolk Trading Standards is offering advice to consumers to ensure they do not fall victim to such companies and traders. If you have any concerns about a trader, call Trading Standards via Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506.

Keeping an eye out for local youth A Sudbury business has made a special donation to a local Scout group in an effort to highlight the importance of road safety. Specsavers, located in Market Hill, donated 60 high-visibility vests to children at 1st Acton & Waldingfield Scouts to raise awareness of Specsavers’ charity partner Brake, which works with communities to stop the tragedy of road deaths and injuries. Lynette Copeland, store director at Specsavers Sudbury says: ‘Although the nights are getting brighter, it’s important that young people are visible and we want to ensure that children – and their parents – feel safe when they’re out and about at all times. ‘By raising awareness of Brake and by offering the children these vests, we hope that they take extra care on trips and excursions.’ When asked about the difference the donation makes to the club, 1st Acton & Waldingfield Scout leader, Clifford Dark says: ‘When working with children, having fun is always important but their safety is the number one priority, so receiving equipment to help us with this is always greatly received, and the kids love them! ‘Most of all, it’s great to see that Specsavers is investing in the community’s interests and needs both in and outside of the workplace.’ Sudbury Specsavers has also recently donated to other groups including 1st Coggeshall Cub Scouts and Yorley Barn Nursery School. Brake is a national road safety charity which exists to prevent deaths and injuries that occur on roads on a daily basis, through campaigns and other funding. The charity also promotes safe and sustainable road use and effective road safety policies. Specsavers Sudbury at 6a Market Hill, Sudbury, Suffolk, CO10 2EA

Stoke by Nayland Ladies’

Anne Hemmings with Gwen Broadhead who won the Suzetta Platt trophy for handicaps 21-36.

Anne Hemmings with Sue Latham winner of the Salcome Salver for handicaps 0-20

Stoke by Nayland Ladies’ first Big Day of the year took place on Thursday, May 11th and the chilly weather gave way to warm sunshine to make their Spring Meeting worthy of the name. Forty-Eight Ladies played Medal format, split into two handicap Divisions. The Salcombe Salver for the 0-20’s was won by Sue Latham with a nett 76, closely followed by Mandy Byham with nett 77. The Suzetta Platt Cup for 21-36 handicappers was won by Gwen Broadhead with a handicap shattering nett 68; Teresa Close was second beating Janet Hodge on countback, both with nett 73. The afternoon Greensomes was played over Nine Holes and the front nine winners were Karen Lewis and Katrina Bygraves with 24 points. Sue Latham continued her winning ways on the Back Nine with her partner, Sybil Paton, scoring 19 points.

Alice slices her own women’s record at Newton Green Alice Barlow has sliced her previous women’s course record at Newton Green Golf Club. Playing to retain the Earl Howe Trophy, the 18-year-old carded a three under par 68. This was two better than her previous course record. The round put her into the last 16 for the knock-out stage of the most difficult competition to win at Newton. Off her handicap of one, Barlow recorded a net 67, one better than 19-handicapper Lizzie Johnson, and two ahead of Margaret Hills, net 69. Barlow, aged 18, is in her final year at Thomas Gainsborough School, Great Cornard, and is spending the summer playing in leading women’s amateur events, including a recent appearance in the Welsh Open, when a nine in her opening round left her down the field. To date, her best finish has been fifth. Her run of success last year means she is a qualifier for the England Women’s Amateur Open in July.

SEH BAC strengthens aluminium range with switch to Origin In business for over 45 years, Suffolk-based SEH BAC knows the importance of a continually evolving product range – and now the South-East firm has bolstered its product line by switching its aluminium offering to Origin. “We have established a strong reputation with homeowners across the South-East and East Anglia for our outstanding windows, doors and conservatories,” comments SEH BAC Managing Director, John Savage. “Our entire range is constantly under review to ensure we always offer our customers the absolute best products. Switching to Origin allows us to strengthen our aluminium offering, by using one of the leading manufacturers of bespoke aluminium products.” Part of One Group Construction, SEH BAC supplies both double and triple glazed windows in a wide range of styles including casement, tilt and turn and bay windows. They also offer residential aluminium doors as well as French doors and luxury bifolding doors. “Of course, it can be a challenge switching suppliers, especially when it is for one of our fastest-growing product areas,” adds John. “However, it is already proving to be a beneficial process, allowing us to draw on Origin’s wealth of experience in aluminium to expand our own range, and capitalise on consumer demand for contemporary aluminium products. We are looking forward to launching some new additions to our offering in the near future.” With a turnover of £30m, SEH BAC boasts one of the largest product ranges in the glazing industry, offering an extensive selection of uPVC, aluminium, timber and timber alternative products. Respected throughout the window industry, the firm has 17 show-centres across East Anglia, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire and Kent, with more planned in the future. Were you at Sudbury Girls High School any time in the 1960’s or early 1970’s up to its closure to become the Middle School? If so, you may be interested in our ‘1960’s Plus Grand Reunion’ to be held on Saturday September 23rd from 7.00 p.m. in the Long Melford Village Hall. This is an opportunity to come along and share memories and maybe meet up with old friends not seen in so many years. We’re asking people to book ahead, with a payment of £10, which should cover the cost of the hall and a finger buffet. We’ll be holding a raffle on the night to cover any extra costs. We hope that everyone will bring along items of memorabilia, and that, during the following year we’ll be able to produce a second volume of memories of the school – the first was produced by the Old Students’ Association a couple of years ago. The OSA meets twice a year, and we’re aware that there are a few year groups who have their own reunions from time to time. This is a one off extra special event. If you’re interested then contact Pam Cram (nee Collett): 86 Pontardawe Road, Clydach, Swansea, SA6 5PA 01792 845942 or pcram@headweb.co.uk Please pass on the information to anyone you know who could be interested, but remember it’s ‘first come first served’ due to limitation of space in the hall! I can provide the full information and booking form either by post or electronically for you to pass on. Look forward to seeing a full hall and hearing all those memories – good, bad, amusing or poignant
