Polka Dot Recycle Store Launches to Help Community Projects and Promote Sustainability

A new community recycle store has opened its doors to provide valuable resources for local community projects and DIY enthusiasts alike. The store is free to the general public and aims to help individuals with their DIY projects. With a wide range of items available, from offcuts of wood to paint, nails, screws, and even gin balloon glasses, the community recycle store is the perfect place for DIY beginners and enthusiasts alike. The store's mission is to promote sustainability for their Exhibition and Event Agency by giving away materials from past projects to be reused. By offering these items for free, the store hopes to encourage the local community to embrace DIY and reduce waste. In addition to providing materials, the community recycle store also offers support for charity events. Last month, the store collaborated with Nat from @kindheartcoffee, donating all proceeds to the @epilepsysociety. This initiative demonstrates the store's commitment to giving back to the community.

The community recycle store is entirely funded through donations, and while everything in the store is free, there is a donation box available for those who wish to contribute.

All donations will be given to a local charity, further benefiting the community.

By launching the community recycle store, DIY enthusiasts now have a dedicated space to find materials and receive support for their projects. With its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, the store aims to empower individuals to unleash their creativity and make their DIY dreams a reality.

The Polka Dot Recycle Store is open from 9am to 2pm on Saturdays at Buntings Farm, Pentlow, CO10 7JL. Follow their Instagram page to see updates on what’s in store!

Dear Sir,

I have concerns about a possible artificial pitch at the Layham Road site, right beside the River Brett. There should never be a plastic/rubber pitch anywhere near a river. That area on the rugby field always floods when we get heavy rain in the winter months. Many insect species live in real grass, upon which many species of birds feed, including Swallow, Swift, Housemartin, Wagtail, Pipit, Thrush, Fieldfare, Redwing and many more.

Dear All,

I hope you have enjoyed our Indian Summer. Before I detail what, I have done and where I have been I would like to highlight how beautiful our flower beds and flower displays have looked over the last few months and I want to say a big thank you to all the Sudbury in Bloom volunteers, all the other volunteers who work so hard on keeping the Town looking nice and our Community Wardens. Well done to you all.

I see Little Egrets, Herons, Gulls and even Lapwings on the rugby field when there is some shallow flooding. I also see Little Owls catching Billy Witches at dusk during May-July.

I still see a good number of Swallows flying low over the rugby field during bad weather, also Swifts catching flying ants around July/August time. So it’s not just the river to be concerned about but also the bats, water bird species and insects that depend on all the plants along the river bank. If you want to play outdoor sports like football, you should play on real grass. I always did, so did many others. REAL GRASS, not a plastic or rubber pitch.

During September I had my granddaughter stay with us for a few days and we went on a River Stour Boat trip. I strongly recommend you do the same. It was so relaxing and such beautiful scenery. A big thankyou to all these volunteers that make this possible.

Dear Sir,

When I first became Mayor in May this year, I raised my concern regarding the lack of funding from our NHS and Central Government to our voluntary organisation and promised that I would arrange a meeting with our MP and Ed Garrett OBE, to try to find a solution to this problem. I am happy to say that the first meeting has taken place with our MP and another one, to include Ed Garrett, is scheduled for October.

On a very hot summer’s day I attended Catchpole Court’s Garden Party. A great afternoon meeting the residents and the staff. What an amazing job they do under such difficult and challenging circumstances. I was touched by the care and commitment they put into their work.

I am writing to you to express my concerns with respect to the proposed 3G pitch at Layham Road Sportsground. The negative impacts on health of such pitches are overlooked by those who promote them as supporting a healthy lifestyle. This ignores the fact that the pitches are associated with increased rates of injury, are unplayable in hot weather due to high surface temperatures and of greatest concern is the impact of inhalation and skin contact of the rubber crumb on which they are laid – particularly to children. Based on the toxicity of the crumb (derived from used tyres) many states in America have now banned it and an EU ban will come into force this year. A distinguished Professor of Public Health (Andrew Watterson) has called for it to be banned in the UK and the Environment Agency is currently investigating its toxicity with a view to changing guidance on its use in any project. Do parents really want to risk their child’s health when so much evidence on rubber crumb toxicity is accumulating?

In September I was privileged to open Aunty Rees cookies in Sudbury. This is a great success story, with them starting business on a market stall and now running a business from one of our shops. I can assure you their cookies are fantastic. I wish them all the very best in their new venture.

Regards,

I was also very proud to open Sudbury’s Heritage Days. Sudbury has a long and fascinating history dating back to the 8th century and it was a great opportunity for the town to celebrate the people and the places that has made Sudbury what it is today. A big thankyou to all those involved in organising this great event.

Dear Sir,

I also attended Tea with the Mayor of Ipswich. A great opportunity to meet other mayors in Suffolk.

Unfortunately, due to the hot weather, the Memory Walk was cancelled until next year. I know that we all look forward to having the opportunity to walk, talk and share precious memories next year.

I am very concerned that there has been a recent push to speed up the proposed 3G pitch at Layham Road Sports Ground by choosing tyre crumb infill. This infill causes microplastic pollution and a significant amount will end up in the river. Plastic grass blades also break up into microplastics and contain PFAS Forever chemicals. Glyphosate is also used regularly on artificial pitches to keep the weeds down. All these pollutants will end up in the river and the environment. We should not be exposing our wildlife to this or the community. We should be able to enjoy the river without worrying about our health.

To end on a real good news story I, together with our Town Centre Manager Rachel, attended an Award Ceremony facilitated by the Suffolk Association of Local Councils and chaired by Mark Murphy.

I am so very proud to announce that Sudbury Town Council won Best Town of the Year. Great news for Sudbury and many thanks to all those who made this possible.

Please continue to take care and keep safe.

The pitches also create urban heat islands that reduce air quality. Cities are now urgently looking at ways to stay cooler because of the higher temperatures. It would make far better sense if the council speak to a sports turf specialist. A specialist will advise them on improving drainage, soil aeration and better grass management. Teams will be able to play on the natural grass for much longer and the whole town will stay cooler and healthier without the loss of greenspace.

Kind regards, Suzanne Grace

More donations for Hive Community Hub

On Wednesday, September 20th

Elaine Cater from the Asda store in Colchester will present a cheque for £1413 so that Hive can purchase a cooker and a fridge-freezer for its Community Hub in School Street, Sudbury. This is a welcome donation from the Asda Community Foundation.

Other recent major donations have included £5,000 from the JA Private Fund - administered by the Suffolk Community Foundation - and £10,000 from the Hillier Trust. These two grants are to support the employment of the Hive Administrator for a further year.

Other money raised in recent weeks has been from generous donations given by people attending each of the Tuesday lunch-time concerts held in the Joy Abbot Hall at the Hive Hub, and amounts to over £1,000. Hive is grateful to Roger Green and Jil Garrett for all their work in organising these superb concerts. All the musicians, including folk singers, choral groups, classical instrumentalists and vocalists, who took part in 11 concerts over the summer gave their services free of charge and Hive is grateful to them all for giving their time and talents so generously.

The next fund-raising event will be a performance by the popular singers The Accidentals, under the leadership of their conductor David Butcher on Friday 13 October from 7 p.m. This event will be free of charge, with a glass of wine on arrival, and a retiring collection for Hive funds. There are organ recitals planned for Saturday evenings in November and December too.

What’s Happening at Holy Trinity Church this Autumn?

Extensive & costly repairs (approx. £150k) to the 38 clerestory windows at Holy Trinity in Long Melford are still ongoing until mid-December, when the building can finally be ‘unwrapped’ and beautifully decorated in time for the all-important Christmas celebrations. 19 windows already cleaned and expertly restored by the expert hands of scaffolders, masons, glaziers and metal workers – just a further 19 left to go!

Collection & deliveries

We offer a reliable collection and delivery service that picks up and returns your cleaned and pressed garments hassle-free, and may even be able to pick up, wash and deliver within 24 hours.*

On Thursday, 26th October, we will be repeating the opportunity to take part in a unique once-in-a-lifetime scaffold tour event. The last one in August was so successful and, without doubt, still being talked about by those who were lucky enough to take part! There will be 4 tours throughout the day taking ticket holders safely up onto the incredibly high scaffold where the Church’s architect who is overseeing the project will give an extremely informative insight into the history of the building’s original structure and layout as well as highlighting current restorations, stunning roof beams and carved bosses; signs of historic medieval graffiti and a birds’ eye view looking down into the interior from dizzying heights and angles.

We service many towns and villages in Suffolk and North Essex including Ipswich, Colchester, Sudbury, and Stowmarket.

If you live outside this area and are considering our services, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

New loos at Gaol Lane in Sudbury

Works to modernise ageing public toilets at Gaol Lane in Sudbury have began with a major public toilet refurbishment in Sudbury town centre.

Carried out by East Angliabased LWJ Solutions, they are expected to take just over four weeks to complete.

Two unisex and one disabled temporary toilet will be available throughout the build.

It will include a complete face-lift of the current facilities – made up of four female cubicles, one male cubicle and two urinals, as well as a disabled toilet - which are now in poor condition.

The building will see new sinks, toilets, flooring, tiles and upgrades to the outside of the building installed.

Babergh District Council have committed over £50K to the project.

It is part of wider plans to improve public toilets in the town – with funding approved last week to progress plans for new toilets at Belle Vue Park.

Cllr Daniel Potter, cabinet member for environment at Babergh District Council, said: “Upgrading the toilets at Gaol Lane has been something both we and Sudbury Town Council have been wanting to do for several years – so it’s great to see our plans finally able to come to fruition.

“These facilities are now showing their age – so bringing them up to date will play a key role in the regeneration of the town centre.”

The toilets are currently leased to Babergh District Council by their owners Sudbury Town Council, with the town council managing regular cleaning on the district’s behalf.

Ciaran Griffin, town clerk at Sudbury Town Council, said: “We’ve been working alongside Babergh District Council over several years to plan the upgrade of these well-used toilets in our town.

“It’s great we’re now in a position to realise those plans, and I very much look forward to seeing them when finished.”

The number and type of toilets will remain the same as currently after works are completed.

Writing from the Rectory

Halloween is a festival celebrated each year on October 31, and this year on Tuesday, October 31. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honour all saints. Soon, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Hallowe’en. Over time, Halloween has evolved to incorporate activities such as trick-or-treating, carving pumpkin lanterns, festive gatherings, donning costumes and eating treats. It has gained greater and greater popularity in recent years, particular as the UK becomes more influenced by American cultures and traditions. Where once the departed were honoured and saints commemorated for their positive influence and legacy of goodness and light, now Hollywood and commercialism has turned this occasion into another great sales opportunity. However, what appears to be harmless fun is, in fact, rooted in a celebration of darkness and evil.

In his book entitled ‘The Screwtape Letters’, C.S. Lewis imagines a senior devil training a junior devil about how to keep people unaware of their tactics to prevent people noticing and believing in God. Part of this training involves encouraging people to make a joke of darkness and evil by promoting the idea that evil is fun, and devils are just cheeky red chaps with horns and pitchforks. Yet a moment’s thought about the state of the world makes it impossible to deny that evil is real and wrecks individuals and communities. Darkness can alter a person’s life in a flicker. Darkness represents chaos and lack of direction. However, the good news is that a flame, no matter how small, can always pierce the darkness and provide direction, comfort and even warmth.

Jesus is described in the famous first chapter of John’s gospel as the light of all humanity and the darkness could not overcome it. Indeed, Jesus describes himself as the light of the world. Our lives should not be lived without hope; it’s not as though we stumble around in the darkness waiting for a candle to flicker on. Rather, hope is a real, fact-based promise where we live our lives at dawn, the break of day, in the certain knowledge that the sun will come and give us warmth and light to carry on another day. If you have lost a loved one or have been impacted by evil and darkness, come and join us for our annual ‘Light Up a Life’ service inspired by the St Nicholas Hospice charity on Sunday 26 November at 3pm in St Gregory’s Church.

May the peace of God which passes all understanding keep your hearts and minds in the knowledge and love of God. Revd Andrew Revd

News from The Christopher Centre

Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club

Welcome from Linda and Kathy, Centre Coordinators.

April was Marathon month with Brighton, Manchester and London being run by some of our members.

With the shorter days not far away now, we are looking forward to a busy October with some new groups starting here on a weekly or monthly basis. email info@christophercentre.org.uk or call us on 01787 313914 for more information.

The Christopher Centre is a thriving community hub where many local groups run their classes and activities.

To start, Adam Chamberlin ran Brighton Marathon on 2 April. What started as a flippant comment about signing up back in 2022, suddenly became a reality. Adam hadn’t been running for very long and originally started to keep his wife company in her training for races.

A place in the community for the community, something for everyone!

We offer a number of rooms available to hire. We also house a number of offices used by local voluntary and community organisations. Our room hire is available on an hourly basis, from £6 per hour.

We aim to continue bringing a friendly community approach to the people of Sudbury and surrounding areas, please contact us if you would like to visit with a view to hosting your group or event with us.

You can find us in Gainsborough Street opposite Gainsborough's House. Why not come along one morning and say hello and have a look around?

Save the Date – Due to the success of our last quiz night, we will be holding another one on 8th December with a Christmas theme. To book your tickets, call in to our reception.

Back to the Marathon and Adam had lots of questions running through his mind as he pounded the streets. Why was he here? When will the pain end? He kept his mantra in mind, “Continuous Forward Momentun” no matter what happened, he knew he had to keep going forward, one step at a time. He didn’t have a goal he had committed to, but secretly would have loved to finish in under 4 hours.

As he ran past the bleak industrial units, which within the last few miles had been replaced by Brighton sea front, came the huge crowds, who motivated him to the finish. The crowds got louder and his pace got quicker and by the time he could see the finish line, he was buzzing with energy. His final sprint, that may have looked more like a fast hobble, got him across the finish line with a time of 03:52:28! Two weeks later, on the 16 April, four runners lined up in various starting waves to run the Manchester Marathon, two of whom were tackling this distance for the first time.

The conditions were near perfect – a light breeze, overcast skies and no rain. Katrina Rigby set off and she was followed in subsequent waves by Vicky Tapp, Samantha Tapp and Geraldine Suckling. The weather remained kind with only a light shower as the runners progressed around a mostly flat and well supported course. The crowd support was superb and all runners were grateful for the encouragement. The sugary treats being handed out around the course were well received and helped push the runners towards the finish. All of the Hares finished the course in great times, with 3 achieving marathon personal bests. It was an unforgettable day and a race we would all recommend to other runners considering racing at this distance. And finally to TCS London Marathon on 23 April. The Club had Steve Hunt, Rachel Bodsworth, Kevin Carpenter, Aden Bell and Joel Bamsey running. For Joel it was his first time participating and Steve had won the Club ballot, having last run his last London Marathon in 2011 and this being his 12th time running!

Whilst waiting in the start pen Steve felt good and well prepared, having put in many training miles with his son Stuart. His wave started in the rain and his legs kept going at a pace that he felt would get him round in under 4 hours. 12 years since his last race the crowds were louder and bigger and kept him going as well as his family who were there to support him. The miles ticked by, steady and sometimes uncomfortable, but the training paid off and he didn’t hit the dreaded wall and finished in a time of 3 hours 55 minutes. Much to his amazement a minute quicker than in 2011! Joel, Rachel finished in under 4 hours, Aden just under 3 hours and Kevin dead on 3 hours.

A huge well done to our runners who after all the training have run so well at their respective Marathons.

Dead Man Painting: The Art of Murder

A group of unlikely characters are invited to a dilapidated mansion in the middle of nowhere for a private viewing of esteemed artist Lucien Masters’ latest work. Some are calling it a renaissance, others are not so impressed. The weather is treacherous, the mood is tense and the atmosphere strained as they wait for their host to arrive… Why would anyone choose to exhibit in such a remote setting and how do the gathered guests really feel about their host and each other? With the weather rapidly deteriorating, tempers rising and nerves frayed, the evening takes an unexpected deadly turn and the police are called to investigate… Join DCI Shoreditch as she unravels the complicated and tempestuous relationships between the suspects, explores the motives behind each of those present, and attempts to uncover what really happened on that fateful night… Brett Valley Collective are a group of enthusiastic creatives who enjoy writing and performing. Dead Man Painting: The Art of Murder is their third self-penned play and their first foray into the murder mystery genre. Previous productions Office Clippings and Village Hall Matters were very well-received by audiences!

Each production helps to raise money for a different charity and, this year, BVC are very proud to be supporting Success After Stroke, a local charity offering support, care and advice to stroke survivors and their families. Tickets are priced at £8.00 and are available from The Little Ginger Bee Co. 99 High Street, Hadleigh

Performance Dates: Thurs 26th, Fri 27th & Sat 28th October at 7.30pm at Hadleigh Old School, Bridge Street.

Rotary Round-up

The fourth Monday of each month is set aside for a Fellowship event when Rotary members and their guests can meet socially. At the end of September, enjoying the last of the summer weather, there was a garden picnic at the home of Jan and David Taylor (Club Secretary).

Looking forward to October, the talk by Rotarian Dorothy Slatter will be "From Council House to Workhouse" (on the 2nd) and, on the 16th, the speaker will be another new member, Mike Birch, recounting some of his experiences as an engineer and no doubt regaling us with some amusing stories from his repertoire. Plans are underway for this year's Rotary Christmas Tree Festival. This annual and very popular event will be taking place from 5 to 10 December, when local charities, schools and companies have the opportunity to decorate a tree and take part in what is always a magical start to the Christmas season. More information will be available on the Sudbury Rotary web site: http://www.sudburyrotary.com, or please email info@ sudburyrotary.com or leave a message on the Club telephone (07341 290415) if you wish to book a tree.

The Christmas Tree festival is the major fund-raising event of the Rotary year, when donations are collected for the Club's adopted charities. President Tony Platt has nominated the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Kernos Centre as the recipients of the majority of funds raised from the Festival and other events during the Rotary year (which begins on 1 July and ends on 30 June).

The previous Joint Presidents, Mike Killoran and Roger Green, nominated Storehouse as the charity they wished to support and Sudbury Rotary has recently donated £1,000 to the food bank service, and will be allocating more funding to local charities during October.

Sudbury Rotary meets on the first three Mondays of each month from 12 noon until around 2 p.m. at Newton Green Golf Club (with a fellowship day on the fourth Monday). So why not come along, meet some Rotarians and find out more? Rotary welcomes men and women from all backgrounds, and undertakes numerous projects across the local community and further afield which will benefit others in need. Please let David Taylor (07341 290415) know if you plan to visit us, so that we can advise the restaurant on numbers.

I need a new car for work, but I can’t afford to buy a new one, so I’ve been looking at second-hand options.

I’ve heard so many horror stories about people buying cars that turn out to be faulty. I’m worried that I won’t know what to check, especially as I know very little about cars. How can I make sure I don’t buy a dud car?

For many people, buying a car is a major purchase and whether it’s new or second-hand, the process can seem daunting and complicated. But don’t worry, there’s lots of information on the steps to take when buying a car and what you can do afterwards if something goes wrong on the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk

First of all, where are you going to buy the car? If you’re buying from a trader, choose a trustworthy one with an established name with a good reputation. Ideally, they will be part of a trade association or follow the industry’s code of practice.

If you’re buying via an auction, this is much riskier as you’ll have fewer legal protections like the right to returns or refunds so carefully read the terms and conditions before you bid.

If you buy from a private seller, there’s a few extra steps to take. For instance, try to inspect the car at their home address so if something goes wrong later, you have a record of that.

Make sure the car’s details are correct by using the DVLA’s free online vehicle information checker, www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-fromdvla

You’ll need the registration number, MOT test number, mileage and make/ model of the car to do this check. Also, check the car’s MOT history for free on www.gov.uk

Keep a copy of both these results (take a screenshot or download the information) as well as the original advert or description of the car. You might also consider getting a private history check to see if the car’s been reported stolen, still has money owing on it, or has been in a serious crash. This will cost about £20.

Before buying a car, it’s good to check if it meets emissions standards as it could mean paying extra charges when driving through London’s ULEZ or clean air zones across the UK.

Inspecting the car is crucial before buying. Ideally, do this during the day when it’s not raining (scratches are harder to see on a wet car) and take it for a test drive for at least 15 minutes and on different types of roads, if possible. Check you have the appropriate insurance for a test drive (either your own or the seller’s policy might cover you).

Once you’ve decided on a car, don’t be afraid to negotiate on the price. If you take out a loan or finance to buy it, make sure you can afford the repayments over the lifetime of the contract. If you pay with cash, you will have fewer protections than other options like debit.

Often, despite doing all these checks, you might find something wrong with the car after you’ve bought it. You may have a legal right to a repair, the cost of a repair or some money back but it’s on a case-by-case basis and some examples might be the car’s mileage is wrong or the car keeps breaking down.

Facts and Figures from the Past

Have you ever wondered who the Primitive Methodists were? As you drive around Suffolk there are quite a few beautiful houses that were originally Primitive Methodist Chapels. The Sudbury one is now a Church for’ The Living Waters Fellowship’ in Gregory Street. It was originally opened by Samuel Higgs who the Mayor of Sudbury in August 1863. How were they different from the Methodists that were already established? It was all started by the American Evangelist Lorenzo Dow who inspired Hugh Bourne and William Clowes. This 19th Century working class movement known as Primitive Methodism originated in the Potteries following from an open-air camp meeting at Mow Cop in 1807. Hugh and William are credited as the founders; however, it was a people’s movement with a network of local societies and travelling preachers who were nicknamed ‘The Ranters’due to the way they enthusiastically preached in the open air to large crowds with tremendous enthusiasm and passionate wanted to return to an earlier purer form of Methodism founded by John Wesley. Who wrote so many beautiful hymns, especially ‘Hark the Herald Angels Sing’, a well-known Christmas Hymn. Primitive Methodists gave people a sense of self-worth and a desire for self-improvement. Chapels provided education and an opportunity to develop skills in public speaking and leadership. It also provided an alternative way of life, based on Moral values, which helped families out of poverty. In the Context of the going democratisation and sense of dislocation caused by the Industrial Revolution, it appealed primarily to miners, mill hands, farm labourers and weavers. In this area these Primitive Methodists often came into conflict with the clergy and the wealthy. In some of our Anglican Churches they held a separate service one for the landowners, aristocracy, and the elite! The second service for those who were common such as servants and labourers. Another aspect was that very few of these people could read or write. The Elementary Education Act was not passed until July 1870, children were to attend a school between the ages of five and ten. However, in the 1890s only 82 per cent still attended. Many of these families needed the wages of their children to help to support their income. The average family had about nine children and they earned essential income from bird scaring, stone picking, farm work, caring for livestock. Hence the value of joining the Primitive Methodists with all the support with education and spiritual help in improving their lives.By the end of the 1800 century there were 200,000 members.

One of these ‘Ranters’ Thomas Russell was imprisoned for his preaching in the open air, he once preached so loudly he burst a blood vessel in his throat. People were frightened to invite him to preach in their own homes because they were threatened by their landlords of eviction or loss of work. They also allowed women to preach, the first female Primitive Minister was Sarah Bembridge (1794-1880). Another famous preacher was George Edwards from Marsham in Norfolk. From being put in the Aylsham Workhouse because his father Thomas was sentenced to fourteen days of hard labour for stealing some turnips from a field; because his seven children were starving, George was the youngest. At the age of five he worked in the fields as a crow scarer, frightening birds from dawn to sunset. From this poor beginning he eventually was knighted in 1930 having served as a member of parliament for South Norfolk Labour Party. He worked tirelessly for the various unions who were battling for fair wages and treatment.

It is difficult to understand how people managed to survive in these demanding conditions, thank goodness our children are not subjected to this sort of cruelty now. Nevertheless, children in some countries are still suffering from abuse and neglect. The battle for some continues.
