COMMUNITY NEWS

NOVEMBER 2023

Santa is coming to town... With the festive season not too far ahead, Sudbury Rotary has already been able to engage the services of Father Christmas, who will be in the town at the premises of Holmes and Hills on the night of the Lights Switch-on, on Friday 24 November. He will be assisted by a group of elves, with their collecting buckets ready to take donations for local and international causes. There is always a long queue of youngsters and their families waiting to see the man in the red suit, whatever the weather! Already plans are well advanced too for this year's Rotary Christmas Tree Festival, which will return to its ‘old’ home of St Peter’s – the Sudbury Arts Centre. An invitation is extended to any organisation (charity, school, local

The cost per tree is £20 for non-commercial exhibitors and £30 for commercial enterprises. and remains their property after the event. The closing date for entries is 10 November and it will be a case of first come, first served, so don’t delay, apply today! Christmas Tree Festival

at Sudbury Arts Centre (St Peter’s) 5th – 10th December 2023 This is your invitation to take part in our Christmas Tree Festival this December. The festival provides a wonderful showcase for your organisation, charity, business, school, church. As you know, places at the Festival are greatly sought after, and we recommend that you apply as soon as possible for a tree, as trees will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. This year, we are hoping to be able to make a return to the refurbished St Peter’s, now Sudbury Arts Centre. If that is the case, we shall set up the trees for the festival on Tuesday 5th December and open to the public on 6th December. The Festival will remain open until 3.00pm on Sunday 10th December when dismantling and tree collection can commence. The morning of December 11th will be our day to clean and tidy and for you to collect your tree if you could not do so the previous day. The cost per tree is £20 for non-commercial exhibitors and £30 for commercial enterprises. As usual the tree remains your property after the event. No money will be banked before the opening unless paid by electronic transfer. Please support us in trying to make a memorable return of Christmas to the building that was the home of the event for so many years. We hope to bring Christmas to the centre of the town for all to enjoy.

To apply for a tree: Please complete the entry form below and return as indicated by Friday 10th November. ______________________________________________________________________________________________

Sudbury Choral Society presents Mozart’s Requiem Sudbury Choral Society’s Autumn Concert takes place on Sunday 19th November at 7.30pm in St Gregory’s Church, Sudbury. We will be performing Mozart’s Requiem, as well as Gabriel Fauré’s Cantique de Jean Racine. Conducted by John Chillingworth, the choir will be accompanied by an invited orchestra and young professional soloists from the Royal College of Music, supported by the Josephine Baker Trust. Mozart was commissioned to write the Requiem in July 1791 but died aged 35 in December that year, before he could complete the work. Payment had already been received, however, and Mozart’s widow Constanze feared that if the work was handed over incomplete the unknown patron would want his money back. The task of finishing the work was passed to Mozart’s pupil Süssmayer, to whom the composer had given detailed instructions about finishing it. Süssmayer copied the entire completed score in his own hand before handing it over, so making it virtually impossible to determine who wrote which passages, but there is no doubt the final work is sublimely Mozart’s. Tickets are available in person from The Tourist Information Centre, (Sudbury Town Hall), Juniper Flowers in North Street, online from Ticketsource, from members of the Society and on the door.

The D O Mayor M E S T I C • C Owrites... M M E R C I A L • AG R I C U LT U RA L Dear All,

As promised in last month’s article I had a very constructive meeting with our MP and Ed Garrett MBE in relation to funding for our fantastic voluntary organisations. I will be having a follow up meeting at the end of the year to ensure that improvements are taking place. I also had a very productive meeting with the Deputy Lord Lieutenant and our Town Clerk. What a lovely man who genuinely shares both our hopes for Sudbury but also our concerns. A few days ago I was contacted by Barclays Bank to organise a meeting to discuss what they can do to help residents and businesses now that their bank has closed in Sudbury. The Town Centre Manager will be joining me at this meeting and I will feed back to you in my next article. October has been a very busy month with AGN’s. I cannot praise our voluntary organisations enough for the hard and dedicated work they do on behalf of our Town. Well done to you all and please keep up the hard work. Was also kept busy attending MacMillan Coffee Mornings. Many thanks to all those who held one, including Mel at the Town Hall and Mr. Deeks who provided some fantastic cakes, Hanover Court, who I understand raised over £400 and Catchpole Court to name just a few. Well done to you all and what a great cause. I was pleased to be invited to the Royal Air Force Air Cadets recruitment evening. So encouraging to see so many young people interested in joining. On the 30th of September I attended a Community Engagement event at the newly re-located Befriending Scheme. They are making very good progress with the new site continuing to provide invaluable support to those in need. On the 1st October I attended the Stowmarket Civic Service. At the end of September, I held my Civic Service which was very well received by those who attended the event. Ashley Cooper wrote and read two poems for the service which were very moving and mind provoking. I also had Arabelle and Masie perform the beautiful Birdie song. Many thanks to everyone who attended the service. A few days later I held a fund-raising dinner at the Secret Garden. This was very well supported, and I raised towards my charities £740. Again, many thanks to those who supported me and my two charities. Earlier in October I attended the Sudbury Hive Fundraising Concert. It was a great evening and many thanks to all involved in the availability of this great venue. On the 14th October I attended the University of Suffolk and West Suffolk College Graduation Ceremony. It was very moving to see so many young people moving forward with their lives. I wish them all the very best for the future. Then on the 15th October I attended the Ipswich Civic Service. Again, great to meet so many people and to also help promote Sudbury. Please keep safe and take care. Jan Osborne, Town Mayor of Sudbury

Two ward councillors have stepped in to breathe new life into Sudbury’s only squash courts by funding some essential repairs. At Ormiston Sudbury Academy, the squash courts have undergone a much-needed refurbishment to the floor and markings, making the courts fit for use once more. Local ward councillors for Sudbury North West, Jessie Carter and Tim Regester, both used £500 of their respective locality funding to ensure the renovation was completed and now, with the work concluded, the courts are back to their best for the local community to use. It is hoped that this investment will help keep the local community active, support mental and physical wellbeing, and meet the demand for the space. Cllr Jessie Carter said: “The squash courts had been closed due to the hazardous state of the floor, so this refurbishment has the potential to be transformative for Sudbury. “This work will promote social interaction and the growth of the local economy, ensuring that our community has safe access to recreational facilities.” Cllr Tim Regester said: “This investment helps to ensure that there are a wide range of sports on offer in the Sudbury area, encouraging our community to get involved in things they enjoy or to try something new. “Investing in sports, like squash, is so important and gives people the resources they need to stay fit and healthy, leading active lifestyles.” Nick Bowen, Managing Director at Edu-Lettings, said: “We are delighted to be able to support the academy and the squash community. “We very much welcome the investment from Babergh to support the facilities and the health and social wellbeing of the community.”

More organ recitals at Hive Community Hub November 18 and December 2

To round-off the current year, there will be two more organ recitals at Sudbury’s Hive Community Hub in School Street (the former URC). On November 18, Tom Cogan will offer a varied programme including Bach's Fantasia & Fugue in C minor, Pastorale in F major, Ich ruf'zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ, and Bist du bei mir as well as Saint-Saens The Swan. Handel Adagio & Allegro from the "Occasional Overture", KargElert, Nun Danket Alle Gott and Lemmens Fanfare. Tom is a gifted musician, who won a choristership to St John's College Cambridge when he was eight years old and, when his feet could reach the pedals, he was taught to play the organ by George Guest. At Lancing he continued studying the organ with John Alston. He won a Choral Scholarship back to St John's where he continued his studies as well as singing. Tom teaches whole school music and singing at St Gregory Primary School and has taken the choirs to Snape Maltings; they were the first state Primary School to be invited to sing Mass at St Paul's Cathedral, which was a great honour. For twenty-three years, Tom was Director of Music at St Gregory's Church, Sudbury, but is now Director of Music at Boxford Parish Church and deputises at Holy Trinity Long Melford when necessary. Two weeks later, on December 2, Peter Crompton will perform. This will be a Christmas Special with Mulled wine, etc. Peter graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music, distinguished by the prize for organ playing. He undertook postgraduate study at St Katharine's College, Liverpool and took organ lessons from Noel Rawsthorne, distinguished organist at Liverpool Cathedral. He became Director of Music at the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook in 1984 and found time, whilst running a large and busy department, to play organ recitals at many leading venues, both at home and abroad. His playing has been appreciated in many of the most prestigious venues including St Paul's, Notre Dame and the Royal Albert Hall. Many will have heard his music at the Royal British Legion's Festival of Remembrance. He has broadcast on BBC radio and television and made several recordings. Although retired from the school, Peter still undertakes some teaching there and continues to delight audiences with his recitals. Roger Green (himself a well-known and talented organist) will introduce both recitals. Proceeds from these two concerts will be in support of the Hive Organ Fund, to provide a humidifier to stop it drying out as a result of 'warm' air or dry cold air being blown through it or the effects of heating. This equipment is likely to cost around d £5,000 to be installed. The concerts will run from 6 to 7 p.m. Come along to hear these excellent organists, enjoy a free glass of something on the way in and make your donations as you leave!

Adapting your home to make bathing easier and safer Home holds a central place in everyone's life, but its suitability becomes particularly crucial for older or less abled individuals. The ability to enter and exit the house safely, navigate within, access essential facilities such as the bathroom, cook a meal, and reach the bed without risk all directly impact our dignity and overall well-being. If you've started to recognise that some of these tasks are becoming challenging to perform safely, it's time to consider making improvements. Unfortunately, many people find themselves unsure of where to begin, often burdened by concerns about the associated costs. However, financial assistance is available through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) for those with qualifying conditions so they can alter their homes to make life easier. A DFG is a means-tested grant that provides a maximum of £30,000 to make alterations to the home to help people remain independent and safe. This might include renovating a bathroom or kitchen to make it more accessible or converting a downstairs room to a wetroom or bedroom. To apply for a DFG, you can contact your local council or for additional information, visit www.gov.uk/disabled-facilities-grants. When it comes to addressing the crucial area of the bathroom, that's where our expertise shines - we’ve been creating bespoke accessible bathrooms and wetrooms for over 24 years. Sometimes our customers think they need a full renovation but more often than not they just need a few adaptations to make life a little easier such as the installation of grab rails near the toilet or installing a walk-in bath or shower that is easier to access. We understand it can be daunting when considering making alterations to your home, which is why we guide our customers every step of the way. Our friendly home surveyors visit customers in their homes to truly understand their challenges and to provide customised solutions that fit within their budgets. Our Customer Service team are always on hand if you have any questions throughout the process and our commitment to excellence is reflected in our 'Excellent' rating on Trustpilot. Our customers are at the heart of what we do and we’re still a familyrun company since my wife Julie and I founded AHM Installations in 1999. Drawing upon the wealth of caregiving, and bathroom adaptation experiences gained over the years we have rolled out our business to other parts of the UK where AHM employed staff can help where our service is needed. We take pride in carefully guiding our customers through the installation of new bathroom equipment in their homes. Our mission is driven by a genuine desire to alleviate the struggles individuals face and our unwavering belief that we can always find a solution, regardless of the budget or situation. If you need our help at AHM please call us on 01787 320933.

Babergh District Council has partnered with Sudbury Town Council and Abbeygate Cinema to bring a unique cinema experience to the district. From Tuesday 31 October to Sunday 5 November, a purpose-built 100-seater mobile cinema, in the form of an HGV, will be set up in Sudbury in the Kingfisher Leisure Centre car park. The list of films showing includes a healthy selection of new releases like Barbie and A Haunting in Venice, as well as offering Ghostbusters and Haunted Mansion as Halloween specials. By bringing an affordable cinema experience to Sudbury, the council also hopes to boost town centre trade, encouraging even more people to venture in to enjoy half term and Halloween events. Cllr Derek Davis, cabinet member for economic growth at Babergh District Council, said: “This is fabulous to see and will bring a really exciting and unique experience to Sudbury for everyone to enjoy. “Thank you to Sudbury Town Council and Abbeygate Cinema for helping us to make this happen. I look forward to heading down myself and watching The Great Escaper!” Cllr Jan Osborne, Mayor of Sudbury, said: “Sudbury Town Council is very pleased to be working with Babergh District Council and Abbeygate Cinema to bring this unique cinematic experience on wheels to Sudbury. “Accessibility has been at the forefront of the project and keeping the ticket prices as low as possible has been key”. Chris Peters, associate manager of The Moving Cinema, said: “We’re delighted to have the opportunity to bring our mobile cinema to Sudbury and give the good people of the town a quality cinema experience they are currently missing. “Our mobile cinema is fully heated and air conditioned, has full digital projection and surround sound, and of course is fully accessible. We’re bringing a varied programme of films and there will truly be something for everyone!” Tickets are available on the Abbeygate Cinema website and cost £5 per adult, £2.50 per child and £4 for concessions and students.

Our next concert is on Sunday 26th November in Lavenham Church at 6:30 pm. The orchestra had hoped to be in St Peter’s, Sudbury for this concert but the over-running works there mean that it was not ready in time for this concert. The two main works for the evening are Schumann’s stunning Piano Concerto with Jill Morton as soloist and Beethoven’s wonderful 6th Symphony, the Pastoral. We start the evening with Schubert’s very jolly Overture in the Italian Style in C, written when Schubert was just 20 years old. He wrote this and another overture in the style of Rossini who he much admired and who was very popular at the time. And when you hear it you will agree – it is very Rossini in style. Schumann’s Piano Concerto started life in 1841 as a one movement piece for piano and orchestra. Four years later Schumann revised and developed the work into a fully fledged concerto. Ever since its premiere with his wife Clara as soloist this concerto has become one of the most widely performed and recorded piano concerto from this period. The concerto starts with a grand flourish with some wonderful melodies repeated throughout the orchestra and the piano. Following a graceful middle section the concerto moves into a its buoyant last movement full of dance like themes before ending in a jubilant and exhilarating finale. It’s a lovely work which played on a magnificent Steinway grand piano in Lavenham Church will sound absolutely fantastic. The soloist for the concerto is Jill Morton who has played many times with the orchestra and it is always a delight for both the orchestra and the audience when she returns for another concert. She has performed in all the major concert halls throughout Britain and has been heard on BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night as soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra. She will certainly do the Schumann justice! Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, the Pastoral, is a wonderfully original work which includes bird calls (a nightingale, a quail and a cuckoo) which, it has to be said, put the fear of god into the players. There are also peasant musicians falling asleep (so the story goes) somehow portrayed with immense sophistication followed by the famous storm with everyone playing full pelt. This is probably the hardest music to play for a double bass player in the whole orchestra repertoire so please come and listen out for them. The storm passes and the music gives thanks. This is a joyful piece with beautiful tunes that the audience will be humming for weeks to come. So – a wonderful evening of music in store, do come and enjoy.

Friends that make you feel at home It can be tough moving home in later life, but for Julie Rudge, the key to feeling happily settled was discovering a great set of local friends.

Julie, 71, moved 100 miles from Birmingham to Southport after falling in love with the seaside town on visits to her daughter Rachel. Keen to stay independent and to not over-depend on her family, she took to trying out as many different activities as she could, including her local Oddfellows friendship group. Julie explained: “I found it easy to make friends because I made a point of joining groups to keep me busy. I hit the ground running with the Oddfellows – it would have been so much harder without their support, especially during lockdown.

“I’ve made a wonderful group of friends. We do so many things together. It’s a bit like the pub, you meet interesting characters and friendly faces, but there are a few more “regulars” and it tends to be coffee morning, lunches and coach trips rather than a drink at the bar. “The Oddfellows is about spending time with other people. There’s lots of choice, so you can always find something you’re into and someone who’s into it too,” she added. The Oddfellows has offered friendship and support to its members for more than two centuries, and its local branches organise regular social events for its members to enjoy, suchas coffee mornings, talks and quizzes. Calling All Pet Owners!! Turn Your Pet Photo into a Digital Painting… Hand-Painted by PetArt Martin Bates – Local Digital Artist Having never been a ‘pet person’, that all changed when my wife insisted on getting two beagles! Once they were home, I was hooked. Watching their behaviour and appreciating their beauty led me to photographing them and painting them. It reignited my passion for watercolours and I found myself painting for friends and family and really enjoying it. Hence www.lovepetart.com was born. Until this point (although I had studied art at college) my main profession was as a web designer, photographer and videographer. PetArt was the perfect way to combine my technical computer skills, photography and my love of art by producing digital art. Working from a photograph I can paint your pet portrait with true likeness. All digital illustrations are painted using a graphics tablet and Photoshop. My art is what I would describe as ‘watercolour grunge with a modern twist’. Using this media, I’m able to capture the true personality of the pet. I am pleased to say that all my customers have been really pleased with the results and I invite you to view examples of my work at www. lovepetart.com/petartgallery I live in Hadleigh, Suffolk where my paintings are created in my studio. Simply email a photo of your pet to info@lovepetart.com and I’ll create the painting. You don’t need to pay anything until you have approved the painting. Cost includes creation of painting, printing & framing. The print is doubled mounted in a classy soft grey frame and will complement any modern or traditional stylings. Frame size is usually 14” x 12” but may vary slightly depending on format of photo. To make use of the 20% OFF voucher below simply quote the code when contacting me. Offer ends 31st December 2023 Creation of painting usually takes 4-5 days, but I do get busy in the run up to Christmas so make sure you get your order in early! Unsure of anything? Just email at info@lovepetart.com or ring me on 07976 893278.

as can be fitted into the Church (in the past we managed 99!). This magical event brings Christmas to the heart of Sudbury and is a delight for its many hundreds of visitors. The event raises funds for Sudbury Rotary's chosen charities, which this year include the East Anglian Air Ambulance and the Kernos Centre. Looking back to October, Rotarians braved the sudden cold to collect donations for the Libya and Morocco earthquake appeal. A total of £350 will be sent from the Club to help purchase shelter boxes, which provide a tent and all the equipment needed to support people who have lost their homes and so much more. Keen cyclists, Robert and Hilary Spivey will be guest speakers on 20 November to tell us more about the adventures they have had on their marathon cycle rides across Europe and also, more recently, from Lands End to John o’Groats. Guest speaker on 4 December will be Jason Holder, editor of the Community News publications. Sudbury Rotary meets at Newton Green Golf Club on the first three Mondays of each month - with an optional lunch. Rotary welcomes men and women from all backgrounds, and visitors are always welcome, but please do telephone 07341 290415 to let us know you will be coming along. Rotarian Lesley Ford-Platt

Christmas is coming!

Now it’s November My WiSH is full steam ahead with our festive plans but, to ensure the patients across the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust have an amazing time, we need your help. Once again, we have launched our Virtual Christmas Present Appeal. This appeal allows us to give each patient in the West Suffolk Hospital, Newmarket Community Hospital and Glastonbury Court a gift to open on Christmas Day. Past gifts have included a tartan blanket, smellies and sweet treats, special neonatal baubles and festive china ornaments. These small gifts make a big difference to our patients. After all, isn’t it lovely for people to know we are all thinking about them at a difficult time. The appeal aims to provide around 600 Christmas presents so please help us give a gift and some festive cheer on Christmas Day. You can donate a ‘gift’ by going to www.visufund.com/wishchristmas2023. Robbie Gladwell & Friends November 30th, December 1st and 2nd Robbie and Julie Gladwell are back with three evenings of songs at the Quay Theatre in Sudbury. Ready, Steady, Rent! sessions to help break the cycle of homelessness Dozens of people in temporary accommodation in Babergh and Mid Suffolk will be helped to break the cycle of homelessness thanks to a new training scheme. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ Housing Solutions service has partnered with The Stone Foundation to offer interactive learning sessions to potential tenants, helping to build their confidence and skills around basic domestic maintenance, budgeting and the everyday responsibilities of a home. The training program “Ready, Steady, Rent!” launched this week, helping households currently in temporary accommodation to move on to homes in the private or social rented sector. The initiative aims to help develop the skills needed to maintain a new tenancy and navigate the responsibilities need to successfully run a home, long term. This includes helping participants to reduce personal debt (including rent arrears), increase confidence and awareness of who to ask if they need support. The interactive course is delivered over two days, in small non-classroom settings. Ten sessions are planned over the next 12 months, helping up to six residents each time, with places offered to those currently living in temporary accommodation or on the Central Suffolk Lettings rent guarantee scheme. Cllr Jessie Carter, Babergh District Council cabinet member for housing, said: “The responsibility of running a home for the first time can often feel overwhelming. Partnering with The Stone Foundation enables us to offer our residents a helping hand in taking steps into the next stage in their housing journey with the tools and skills they need to succeed.” Rob Morris, Chair of the Trustees of The Stone Foundation, said. “Clearly, there are many reasons why people are unable to sustain a tenancy but lack of knowledge and understanding and/or emotional distress or immaturity undoubtedly have a huge impact. “We are therefore delighted to be working in partnership with Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils to deliver our pre-tenancy training course.” “We look forward to delivering on some of our joint objectives and equip individuals considered ‘At Risk or Disadvantage’ to develop the skills and competencies associated with independent living and the confidence to succeed.”

Keith Avis................................01473 823131 The addition to the long-standing cemetery at Hadleigh Town Council’s Friars Road location, which includes a Natural Burial Meadow for burials and cremations, is very much “up and running”. Concern about the environment, as well as other factors such as a love of nature and the outdoors, are leading more people to consider a natural burial. Natural burials are far from a new idea as returning a body directly to the earth has been done since time immemorial and the choice to have a more environmentally-friendly burial is becoming more popular which is why Hadleigh Town Council are pleased to be able to offer this alternative. As well as the Natural Burial Meadow, there is also a separate Rose Garden for scattering of ashes, which has been described as “a lovely place to visit in the future”. There is also a Tree of Life upon which in addition to traditional cremation and full burial plots, loved ones in the natural burial area or ashes scatterings can be commemorated with memorial leaves placed on the “Tree of Life”. Scattering of ashes can be booked in for our new rose garden close to the Tree of Life and natural burial area.

Welcome from Linda and Kathy, Centre Coordinators. And just like that its Autumn, bit of a shock to the system to go from 24 degrees to our first frost but we can’t complain can we? We have had an exciting time the last few weeks, with our participation in the Sudbury Art Collectives September Art Trail showcasing 3 different art exhibitions and even having a visit from our Lady Mayor to view the art. We celebrated our 1 Year Anniversary of the Menopause Support Group with a lovely evening welcoming our regular and new members and some fizz and nibbles were partaken. The next Menopause group will take place on the 2nd November 7-9pm and we are delighted to welcome back by popular demand Ailsa Hichens Registered Nutritional Therapist & Health Coach at Food Fabulous, talking to us about Cardiovascular Health relating to Menopause. Do feel free to come along, no need to book. Other new groups include the monthly Cancer Support Group which is held on the 4th Tuesday of the month and a New Life Drawing class on a Monday evening 6.30-8pm all very successful and have had good attendance. We are very pleased to say that our new website is finally taking shape, and with the help of another amazing volunteer we are hopeful to have all our latest events and what’s on updated on a regular basis so be sure to take a look and find something to suit you on the coming winter days. Don’t forget our Christmas themed Quiz night on the 8th December, tickets will be on sale soon. Priced at £15 per person, this will include a delicious Graze Buffet table supplied by a local catering company Fig & Olive. Christmas jumpers optional! SAVE THE DATE This month we are delighted to announce that we will be having a Christmas Affordable Art Event on Saturday 25th November. Why not come along and pick up a present for someone special. Seasonal refreshments will be available and maybe even some Christmas carols will be sung out in our lovely courtyard. The Christopher Centre is a thriving community hub where many local groups run their classes and activities or family events without the mess in your home. We offer a number of rooms available to hire. We also house a number of offices used by local voluntary and community organisations. Our room hire is available on an hourly basis, from £6 per hour. We aim to continue bringing a friendly community approach to the people of Sudbury and surrounding areas, please contact us if you would like to visit with a view to hosting your group or event with us. Writing from the Rectory – Are you sitting comfortably…? Then I’ll begin A dusty map, a discarded telescope, a delicate smell… who would live in a place like this? Many of us think we know the Christmas Story and that it has no new mysteries to reveal, no questions to ponder. Whilst we can get caught up in the festivities, we lose sight of the actual events surrounding the birth of Christ, (meaning anointed one), and the experiences for those key players as this nativity story unfolded before their very eyes. This year, St Gregory’s Church is hosting an event on behalf of All Saints’ andPage St Gregory’s Project15_Layout 1 20/02/2020 13:41 1 churches which endeavours to help children and their families experience the Christmas story as never before, on an interactive Christmas Trail. Inspired by the spirit of curiosity, questioning and investigation embedded in the popular TV show ‘Through the Keyhole’ comes ‘Christmas Through the Keyhole’. This interactive trail welcomes children and families inside the empty homes of characters from the nativity story. Here one experiences the decor, objects and clues left around each home to answer the question “Who would live in a house like this?”. We aim to get you thinking about the lives of the characters from the first Christmas and the real challenges they faced on their epic journey to Bethlehem, throwing up questions like, ‘How many oats will the donkey need for a three-day journey? It is appropriate for people of all faiths, and is aimed particularly at year 2 children, who will be visiting on school trips. However, on the morning of Saturday 25 November we will open the doors for families to come and enjoy the chance to be enthralled and question their understanding of the importance of those first days of Jesus Christ on earth. Indeed, another name for God is ‘Emmanuel’ which means God with Us. It gives us certainty that we are not alone in this life but that the creator of the universe came in human form and dwelt among his people to show us how to live as the very best imaginable version of our unique selves. With Christmas now in the forefront of retailers’ minds, I pray that we can approach this festive time with the wide-eyed innocence and excitement of those characters involved in the birth of our Lord. Let’s not get lost in ‘to do’ lists and the worry of finding the right present for grandma. This year let’s get back to the heart of the Christmas Story! Why not discover ‘who lives in a house like this’ and visit us on Saturday 25 November from 9-12pm? Revd Andrew
