Babergh Chairman raises thousands for Blossom Appeal

Babergh District Council Chairman, Cllr Kathryn Grandon, raised over £11,000 at a recent fundraising Civic Dinner… for a cause very close to her heart.

Cllr Grandon, who has undergone recent breast cancer treatment, raised £11, 136 for the Blossom Appeal – helping to fund a new Breast Care Centre at Ipswich Hospital.

The charity dinner last month saw 200 guests attend the Royal Hospital School for an evening of fun and fundraising.

Cllr Grandon said: “Thank you to all the guests, sponsors and helpers for their generous support. It was a wonderful event and being able to raise so much for this a fantastic cause was amazing and a lot of fun too.

At this time last year, I was recovering from my third breast cancer operation, so being able to

support the work of the Blossom Appeal in this way has been an honour.

“I have been overwhelmed by the level of support this event has received. The contributions of time from the organising committee and the team has been fantastic.

Being able to raise over £11,000 in one night, is a fantastic response to the prizes donated by all our sponsors for some great raffle and auction prizes, including the star prize of a Valentines Night stay package at the Marquis Hotel, Upper Layham.

However, the evening was not just about raising funds. It was also about raising awareness and the importance of regular checks. The number of women I have met since the dinner that have told that they ‘have been checked’ has been really moving.”

Cllr Grandon will continue fundraising for her chosen charity for the remainder of her year in office. Anyone wishing to support her can find more information here - BMSDC Civic Office is fundraising for Colchester & Ipswich Hospitals Charity (justgiving.com)

Taking advice and making early decisions to plan effectively

It is often the case that a couple’s main asset is their family home, and many are conscious of this when considering planning their estate and inheritance for their loved ones. However, many couples can limit their ability to effectively plan and preserve their estate, or limit their available options for this, if planning their estate is left too late.

Property can be held jointly in one of two ways. Property held as “Joint Tenants” will pass automatically to the surviving owner under survivorship rules whereas, property held as “Tenants in Common” will pass under the terms of a Will. For couples to effectively plan their estate, it is often necessary for their main residence to be owned as Tenants in Common, providing each with a % share ownership which can be directed into a Trust upon death.

What is a Property Life Interest Trust Will and what does it do?

What is a Property Life Interest Trust Will and what does it do?

A solicitor is able to re-organise a couple's ownership of a property alongside preparing a Will for you, so as to ring fence each individual's property share in a Trust for future generations and identified beneficiaries. The surviving spouse/partner is protected by having a lifetime right of residence in the property and can be one of the trustees (managers) of the Trust. Therefore, the gift of your respective share in your principal residence at death is made to your trustees on trust and is subject to the surviving spouse/partner's right to live in the property for their lifetime. The Trust can be flexible in that the surviving spouse/partner will be able to move to another property using all or part of the value of the property.

Any surplus capital not used in the purchase of a new property can be invested and the income can be paid to the surviving spouse/partner for their lifetime. The surviving spouse or partner can decide to make gifts to the family if they do not need the surplus capital or income. Property Life Interest Trust Wills are very flexible, with the surviving spouse/partner even able to rent out the property and receive the rental income.

It is always a good idea to take advice when thinking about planning for the future, planning your estate and planning for care. When considering whether Life Interest Trust Wills are appropriate for your circumstances and wishes, your solicitor will also consider your Inheritance Tax position. As mentioned, it is advisable to seek advice sooner rather than later to ensure all legal solutions and options remain available to you.

Changing the world, one banana at a time!

What do you know about Fairtrade? Have you ever bought a fairtrade banana? Or noticed the Fairtrade mark on a bar of chocolate and wondered what it meant ?

What is Fairtrade? Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Buying Fairtrade products ensures that producers receive a fair price for their goods – and there is also a ‘social premium’ which goes towards providing community facilities such as clean water. Producers decide on projects democratically.

Paying sustainable prices addresses the injustices of conventional trade which tends to discriminate against the poorest, weakest producers.

The Fairtrade Mark The FAIRTRADE Mark is a registered certification label for products sourced from producers in lower income countries. It’s used only on products certified in accordance with Fairtrade Standards (and on promotional materials to encourage people to buy Fairtrade products). To find out more visit the wonderful Fairtrade Foundation website at www.fairtrade.org.uk

Fairtrade in action – go bananas!

There are lots of fairtrade products available - in Sudbury shops you can easily find fairtrade coffee, tea, sugar, chocolate, bananas, socks, tomatoes, stationery, and all kinds of crafts and gifts. But the one we notice most often in the supermarkets is probably bananas.

Trading bananas is the cornerstone of many lower-income countries’ economies, with an estimated global export value of $7 billion. It is believed that for more than 450 million people in lower-income countries, bananas (and plantains) are essential staple crops.

There are currently 258 Fairtrade certified banana organisations (cooperatives and commercial farms), representing over 36,480 farmers and workers in 16 countries.

Banana farmers and workers across the world are facing increased financial struggles and uncertainty. Fairtrade’s minimum price means that farmers and workers can build their resilience. This year Fairtrade raised the minimum price, while in 2021 we introduced a Base Wage for banana plantation workers.

Between 2000 and 2020, Fairtrade banana sales in the UK generated over £114 million in Fairtrade Premium for farmers and workers. Fairtrade Premium is an additional sum of money which goes into a communal fund for workers and farmers to use to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions for example by paying for schooling or to improve housing.

Sudbury – a Fairtrade town

A Fairtrade town is one that has made a commitment to supporting Fairtrade and using products with the Fairtrade Mark. Any area can work towards Fairtrade status and everyone can be involved. By choosing to support Fairtrade, a town adds its voice to demands for a trade system that puts people, not profit, at the heart of the transaction. We believe that our voices are louder when we speak together.

Sudbury added its voice to this movement ten years ago, and we are now working to renew our status in 2023. Watch out for events and promotions and please support your town!

And, of course, choose Fairtrade wherever you can!

If you are, or have been, a Fairtrader please get in touch as we would like to create a Sudbury area network to pool resources and help each other. We’ll be at Sudbury Market on March 11th to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight –come and say hello!

If you would like to help with promoting fairtrade in the area, please email the steering group on info@sudburyfairtrade.org.uk

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra

Sudbury Symphony Orchestra’s next concert will be on Sunday 26th March at 6 pm in Lavenham’s magnificent church when they will be performing two gorgeously luxurious violin solo pieces, Elgar’s Salut d’Amour and Holst’s Song of the Night. The Holst piece was lost for many years and is only now getting the appreciation it deserves. It is also a perfect companion to the Elgar. The soloist for the evening is Philippa Barton who has already performed several times with the orchestra. The concert programme includes Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony which is full of happy energy and wonderful tunes.. The evening starts with one of Rossini’s earlier overtures, this one to the opera Il Signor Bruschino. The overture has all the tunes that re-appeared in his later more famous overtures so listeners will feel they already know it. Philippa last performed with the orchestra in November 2019 when she performed Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto. She is a very well known violinist and teacher who trained at the Royal Academy of Music, freelanced with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra and is now leader of a number of regional orchestras. The two pieces she will be playing tonight really showcase the beauty of a solo violin with long lines of tone soaring out while using the orchestra as a subtle and beautiful accompaniment. Both pieces are sublimely expressive works that remind us of a bygone age.

Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony was composed while he was in his early 20s and was inspired by a trip to Italy. It was an instant success although oddly Mendelssohn kept trying to make changes to it as he was not satisfied with it. This is an exuberant and happy work which always leaves a smile on your face - whether you are playing it or listening to it. The opening piece, Rossini’s overture to Il Senor Bruschino is so Rossini that you have to smile. It might be early Rossini but he was an assured composer comic opera by the time he wrote this. Its brief, energetic, has thrilling crescendos and its just fun. This will be a really wonderful evening’s music, do come and enjoy. See the website www.sudburysymphonyorchestra.com for more information and ticket details.

Writing from the Rectory

Sudbury & District Citizens Advice

I’ve been offered and accepted a new job. The new company wants me to start as soon as possible but we’re really shortstaffed where I am now, and I don’t know how soon I’ll be allowed to leave. How should I bring all this up with my boss?

I have been reminded these past few weeks of the privileged role a vicar has, in joining families in some of the most significant times of their lives. I have visited a number of families recently to discuss the baptism of their children, or indeed their own baptism, and I look forward to launching our new course on exploring Christian faith which enables such individuals to enter baptism with a good understanding of all it means. It was wonderful to preside over a wedding during the winter months, and the sound of the newly restored church bells will ring out more often in such celebration as we move into warmer seasons. Sadly, however, the winter months often witness more deaths, and this season has been no different. Whilst there has been a trend towards secular services (or perhaps no service at all), I believe a funeral service can play a key role in recognising the death of a loved one and then moving on in the grief process. I am glad to be able to support families in creating a service that reflects their family member and, in talking about it, help those individuals express their emotions and remember.

Congratulations on your new role! It can feel awkward telling your employer you’re moving on but there are set processes in place. The time between telling your employer you’ve found a new position and you actually leaving is known as your notice period. If you’ve been in your current job for less than one month, you won’t have to give any notice period (unless your contract says otherwise). If it’s more than a month though, you have to give at least one week’s notice. Check what your contract says to find out how much notice you’ll be expected to give. If you don’t have a contract, and your employer has no written record of you agreeing to a notice period, but you have been employed for more than a month you have to give at least one week’s notice. Although it may be tempting to hand in your resignation as soon as possible, it’s worth waiting until your new employer has confirmed your new employment, for example by signing your contract or by giving you a start date. It’s then best to give your resignation in writing (email is fine), so that you have a record of the date you told your employer. You can find guidance on how to do this on the Citizens Advice website, visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk where we have a page on handing in your notice. Fixed-term contracts are a bit different, as you won’t need to give notice if you intend to leave on the last day of your contract. Leaving before the end of a fixed-term contract usually means giving at least one week’s notice, but again check your contract to see if this is different.

SUDBURY

Addressing a different significant need, I met with trustees of two local charities last month, which provide financial support to local individuals and offer funds to assist with the high cost of living. These charities were set up three centuries ago, when wealthy philanthropists saw the need around them and offered some help. This imbalanced distribution of wealth goes back generation on generation, to well before the time of Jesus, and we have all entered a world that accepts the myth of scarcity. Jesus reminds us that God is a God of abundance. If only our world could look to share rather than hoard, we would all be blessed by the results. If you would like to learn more about the God of abundance I talk of, or are considering baptism at either All Saints’ or St Gregory’s Churches, do get in touch (parishsecretary@stgregspcc.co.uk).

Don’t forget about your holiday days during your notice period. If you have any unused annual leave, speak to your employer about either taking these during the notice period or being paid back for them in your final pay cheque. Finally, sometimes people can change their mind about moving jobs or find their circumstances alter. If this happens to you, you should speak to your current employer to see what your options are and if you can stay in your current role.

Now that’s something you don’t see ever y day Maisie, the spr inger and I were meeting the lovely people at Lush Cosmetics in Ipswich because they were donating profits from their Char ity Pot cream to SESAW Suddenly we saw a human striding through the precinct with a tall contraption strapping to his back

Here comes March, in like a lion, out like a lamb and it’s greetings from Oliver (Ollie to my intimates), resident top cat at SESAW. I’ve beaten Kenny to the keyboard to tell you about two of our rescued animals.

Maxine, a five year old spayed female tabby in need of a new home. This delightful girl is friendly and loving, but occasionally it might be on her terms. She just needs to find that special (preferably adult) home, or with older children.

Apparently it was the Google Ear th guy, mapping the precinct with a 360 ̊ camera And I thought he was there just to photograph me! Mind you, Maisie and I were soon the centre of attention again but I really didn’t know where to look when she rolled on her back for tummy tickles That dog is SO embarrassing!

We also have rescued dogs including a very good looking young Saluki type lurcher in need of a knowable home. Reggie had a bad start and deserves much better. He is FULL of life and needs the ideal person who understands sight hounds and is prepared to put time and effort with further training and encouragement. Reggie has lived with another dog and could do so again, with most dogs he wants to play and loves a game of ball. Please leave a short message with your name and number if you would like to meet either of these animals.

I should explain about Maisie She arr ived at SESAW one Chr istmas, in great pain, hardly able to walk Luckily our talented vet was able to correct a bir th defect on her legs She patiently endured a long recover y per iod, remaining calm as her dressings were changed and licking ever yone who cared for her Two years later our Spaniel enjoys life, goes for shor t walks and loves nothing better than a squeaky toy

Rotary Round-up

With news of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria, Sudbury Rotarians quickly organised a street collection in the town centre. On Saturday 11 February, aided by the display of a shelter box and some of its contents, a small team collected a total of £672.83 from members of the public, who recognise that money collected by Rotary goes direct to support the causes for which it is raised.

At their lunch-time meeting on Monday 13 February, members added to that total, with further donations from St John’s Methodist Church members and Sudbury 41 Club and a cheque from Trinity Welsh Church in London, this brought the total to £3,000 channeled through Sudbury Rotary. As a result, two Shelter boxes can be purchased costing a total of £1,190, with the remainder of the funds from the Sudbury community (and beyond!) being used by Rotary to meet the general needs of people who are suffering so terribly because of this appalling disaster.

Also, during February, Sudbury Rotarians were most impressed to meet Ben Corson, one of this year’s international scholars supported by Rotary International, and studying at Cambridge University. Ben has a track record of working in communities to improve the lives of their citizens, particularly in Africa. He stressed how important it is for leaders to listen to what local people say they need and to ensure that projects meet those needs, citing Rotary as one organisation which does just that. The final fellowship event of February was a mid-morning get-together of Rotarians and partners for coffee and pastries at the Bull Hotel Long Melford followed, for those who wished, by an hour long walk in the area. On March 6th we will welcome Barry Appleby and hear more about his fascinating topic of ‘Cartooning’.

Rotary is open to people from all backgrounds and we would welcome more of you to join us. As was evidenced by the February collection for the Turkey-Syria appeal, the thing which brings us together is our wish to support others, in the UK and through overseas projects, and to enjoy each other’s company while doing so, for example, the coffee and pastries get-together!

Sudbury Rotary meets at Newton Green Golf Club on the first three Mondays of each month - with an optional lunch, gives an opportunity for us to hear from speakers on topics of interest, follow up on matters concerned with our activities, and to enjoy each other’s company.

Visitors are always welcome, but please do telephone 07341 290415 to let us know you will be coming along. Check out more information about the Club at www.sudburyrotary.com.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils take action over Housing Issues

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils are taking action to improve their Building Services - which maintain their council housing - and urgently resolve a number of issues.

The councils began a programme of work to improve the service last summer, and in-depth assessments arising from this work subsequently identified issues around health and safety compliance.

Of their 6,788 homes, 344 do not currently have up-to-date electrical safety reports. Gas inspections are also overdue on 92 properties, and asbestos reinspection surveys are not up-to-date on 33 homes.

Urgent work to address the issues is already underway – including additional inspections, an overhaul of existing processes, and obtaining more robust data around health and safety compliance to provide tenants with complete reassurance.

The councils voluntarily referred themselves to the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) as soon as they became aware of the issues and contacted all its tenants.

The RSH has now confirmed the councils’ findings and issued a Regulatory Notice, meaning it will monitor the councils and meet regularly until it is assured sustainable, long-term improvements are embedded.

The regulator has confirmed it does not intend to take statutory action against the councils because an urgent programme of work is already in place to rectify the problems.

The councils are confident their action plan will promptly result in full compliance with the required standards but welcome the support of the regulator in ensuring that robust procedures and practices are embedded. Tenants at every home where an additional inspection is required have already been contacted.

John Ward, Babergh District Council leader, said: “It is disappointing to find ourselves in this position, but we are doing everything we can to address these issues as quickly as we can.

“As a responsible landlord, we referred ourselves to the regulator at the earliest stage to seek guidance and will be taking every possible step to ensure we are providing the best possible service to tenants in the future.” The councils will be writing to all tenants to keep them updated about the situation.

CC 1st XI 2019

What a staggering, unbelievable game it was It had everything – cliffhanging drama, run-outs, and THAT over It was a real “where were you?” moment But enough about the 1st XI’s win over Worlington The World Cup Final was pretty good too the day after All day long a few hardy HCC souls watched the drama unfold on the big screen in the pavilion, with lots of juniors from two games at the ground that day popping in to watch from time to time Hopefully what they saw will inspire them to follow in the footsteps of Roy, Stokes, Buttler etc

It has been a much better month for the 1st XI, with three wins on the bounce against Maldon, Worlington and Wivenhoe This despite plenty of availability and injury issues Our overseas player Kudzai Maunze has scored two matchwinning centuries in those games – all the more remarkable since it has become apparent that he has been playing with a fractured thumb Dom Manthorpe has also been chipping in with valuable contributions with both bat

In slightly misty weather, over 30 ladies gathered to celebrate the start of the tenure of the new lady captain Margaret Hills. It is a long standing tradition and event for the current lady captain (Emily Evans) to “putt out” on the 18th green with the new lady captain (Margaret Hills) overseeing that activity and then herself moving to the 1st tee to “drive off” to mark the start of her year as lady captain. The theme of the day (14th Feb) was Valentine’s day and Margaret had a huge number of lady players (dressed in red, with heart themed outfits) cheering her on and also trying to guess the length of her first tee shot (for a small fee which is donated to charity). The first drive went 126 yards and was straight!

Margaret is undertaking her second stint as lady captain having first done so in 2008. Margaret’s vice-captain is Sarah Woodhead and together they will co-ordinate golfing activity at Newton Green GC over the coming year (events include social golf, friendly matches, county competitions as well as close liaison with the mens section for mixed golf). Through the year Margaret is raising money for Multiple Sclerosis research. Newton Green welcomes ladies new to golf and has bespoke coaching and integration activity in place, for more information visit www.newtongreengolfclub. co.uk (get into golf).

Facts and Figures from the Past

As the local elections draw near, and thinking about the choices we will be given, I seriously wonder how many will make the effort to vote. In the last local election there was an extremely low count with barely one third of the population in some areas voted. I have always valued the fact that I have a choice and a vote. Women were only allowed to vote for the first time in 1918. I still feel indignant about the fact that men were allowed to vote from the age of twenty-one, yet women had to be aged thirty and had met minimum property qualifications. Prior to 1832 men were only allowed to vote if they owned property and paid certain taxes.

I attended a girl only High School in the 50s and 60s, we were divided into four House Teams named after women who had been strong, resilient, and brave against many hurdles. We had Elizabeth Fry, Grace Darling, Florence Nightingale, and Elizabeth Garret Anderson. From an early age I soon appreciated the battles these women had fought to be accepted and treated equally.

73% of people think IF a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. similarly, 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can't make them yourself*. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Should your spouse/partner or parent become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and neither a partner nor next of kin will be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. For example, this would mean being unable to deal with financial institutions in respect of accounts and pensions, the Department for Work and Pensions, or utility companies. Similarly, a next of kin will not be able to make decisions regarding the health and welfare of a spouse/partner, parent or other relative, including where and what care should be provided, as well as what end of life care should be received, if any.

What is needed to be able to help?

To assist your spouse/partner, parent or other relative with affairs during their lifetime, or make certain decisions you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means they will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

Common reasons for needing to help

Often people need to assist with these matters because their spouse/partner, parent or relative has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident.

Elizabeth was the first woman to qualify as a doctor and to become the first female mayor in Aldeburgh (and in England). So, for me to eventually serve as mayor of Sudbury for three terms, all stemmed from my appreciation of how this incredible woman struggled against all odds and discrimination to eventually overcome insurmountable hurdles of bigotry, misogyny and jaundiced politicians. When she was studying at the Middlesex Hospital she was forced to leave because the male students felt threatened due to her intelligence and capabilities. Having been refused to study at medical colleges in Oxford Glasgow, Cambridge and Edinburgh. Elizabeth studied French so that she could attend the Sorbonne University where she eventually gained her medical degree.

I was appalled about the way Suffragettes were force fed whilst in prison when they went on hunger strike. They were given bromide because that made it easier to force feed them. This was allowed through the “Temporary Discharge of ill Health Act” commonly called the “Cat and Mouse Act”. Elizabeth and her sister Millicent joined the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1908 however they didn’t support the arson programme and dropped out in 1911. Elizabeth’s daughter Louisa was imprisoned with Sylvia and Christabel Pankhurst in 1912.

What happens if LPAs are not in place?

If you want to help your partner or parent with property, financial, health or welfare decisions and they do not have Powers of Attorney in place and were incapable of making them, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Until the Court authorises your application you are unable to deal with the persons money or property, and will be unable to make decisions regarding their health and welfare.

What are the two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney?

LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:

• Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home).

• Health and Welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves. Discuss Powers of Attorney for yourself, a partner or parent

It was interesting to note how these women introduced marketing to spread the word. By the end of 1912, fifty-eight branches of W.S.P.U existed having recruited women from all backgrounds and education. Membership lists were not kept due to the fear of their offices being raided by the police. These forward-thinking women had a weekly newspaper named ‘Votes for Women’ they developed a well-designed logo, held exhibitions, and processions in all major cities. The special colours to represent the movement were, purple, white and green representing freedom, purity and hope. Eventually in 1928 women were given the right to vote at twenty-one. Just ninety-five years ago. I wonder how many young women today really appreciate how hard our equality was fought for? Do they truly understand how women suffered to gain respect and the acknowledgement that they deserved?

To talk to a local lawyer about Lasting Powers of Attorney and to find out whether you or a loved one should have them, call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk and ask to speak to a member of our Private Client Department. *OPG, 'Your Voice. Derek Cranston

On returning from casting my vote in the early seventies, my husband switched the television on, and the presenter stated that generally couples made their cross in the same boxes for the same candidates. My husband glared at the television and said “Not in this house, no one will tell her how to vote”. Even now I read two different newspapers and do not take for granted some of the biased opinions that we are subjected to. When I am ironing I sometimes choose to observe the debates in the House of Commons. I am so often appalled at the behaviour of some politicians, the same can be said at local council meetings. We all have differing opinions, but need to always listen and show respect whatever the opposition have to say.

Derek passed peacefully away in Ipswich Hospital on Tuesday 28th June, after a thirty hour stay. Derek who was 86 years old had lost his mobility and had been bed ridden for the last year of his life. He will be sadly missed.

We are not legally expected to vote as they are in some countries such as Australia, Uruguay, Chile, Belgium, Brazil and Argentina. So ladies value your voting right in May and use it.

March Advice Column

Come and Join HEAT in 2022

I’ve been offered and accepted a new job. The new company wants me to start as soon as possible but we’re really short-staffed where I am now, and I don’t know how soon I’ll be allowed to leave. How should I bring all this up with my boss?

The weather may be cold but no one disputes that the climate is heating up and wildlife is suffering Sometimes it feels as if there is so much to do yet so little time left So Hadleigh

Environmental Action Team (HEAT) is gearing up for a year of activities, events, campaigns and projects We had an busy 2021 despite the restrictions of Covid and today we can celebrate having over 70 members and lots of great projects led by people with energy and enthusiasm

If you want to do something about the climate crisis and help the environment HEAT will have lots of things for you to choose from You can join our river monitoring group and learn how to identify invertebrates, test for chemicals and find out how healthy our river Brett really is

Alternatively, you can be part of the Plastic Free Hadleigh campaign to reduce single use plastics in businesses and community groups, help out with sustainable gardening on the HEAT allotment or join our team of volunteers doing conservation work in Hadleigh’s nature reserves We will also have wildlife activities for young and old as well as speakers to listen to and visits to go on

You can find guidance on how to do this on the Citizens Advice website, visit www.citizensadvice. org.uk where we have a page on handing in your notice.

Watch this space! HEAT will be stepping up its activities in 2022 keeping our focus on local change and working with the people of Hadleigh Sometimes it feels as if the challenges the Earth faces are too enormous for individuals and local groups to make a difference We believe that all change, however small, when added together can make a difference Interested?

Fixed-term contracts are a bit different, as you won’t need to give notice if you intend to leave on the last day of your contract. Leaving before the end of a fixed-term contract usually means giving at least one week’s notice, but again check your contract to see if this is different.

Just email us at hadleigh heat@hotmail com Hadleigh Environmental Action Team - working to help people and organisations in Hadleigh to always take climate change and the resilience of the natural world into account when they make decisions

Don’t forget about your holiday days during your notice period. If you have any unused annual leave, speak to your employer about either taking these during the notice period or being paid back for them in your final pay cheque.

New Year Update

Finally, sometimes people can change their mind about moving jobs or find their circumstances alter. If this happens to you, you should speak to your current employer to see what your options are and if you can stay in your current role.

2021 has certainly been another challenging year for all of us at Hadleigh Boxford Group

Everyone’s situation is different, but if you face any challenges with an existing or potential employer, contact Citizens Advice for advice: 0800 144 8848 or visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk to find out about what to do when you’re leaving a job.

Practice The whole team have pulled together in these difficult times, and we have been so well supported by the community and our PPG

You will all be aware of the Covid clinics that have been the stand-out achievement and a massive 24,000 Covid vaccines have been delivered in the surgery, and more recently St Mary’s Church In addition to this are the hundreds of vaccines delivered by our team of mobile jabbers to the residence and staff at the four care homes we look after and the numerous house-bound patients too Many of those delivering the vaccines are our retired nurses and doctors, and we are indebted to them for their incredible support

For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www. citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact

We are providing advice by telephone and email Monday – Thursday, 10am – 3pm.

None of the vaccination clinics would have been the huge success they were without the army of PPG volunteers that have been out in force come rain, gales and even snow! They have worked so hard to support us and the community and we are extremely grateful to every single volunteer

It has been a herculean effort from everyone at the surgery that, despite all the Covid disruption, the Covid vaccinations, the isolations, and lockdowns we have also delivered nearly 5,000 flu vaccines and remained open seeing patients throughout the pandemic

We are all aware that the demand on GP surgeries in England has steadily climbed over these last 12 months and we have felt it here too We have worked tirelessly to do our best to meet this demand including adapting our working pattern, incorporating more technology to support us in delivering care and recruited 12 new people to our team Although we have sadly had to say goodbye to some staff that have left, we have grown in numbers at the surgery We are proud to have 3 more receptionists, extra secretarial and data team personnel, as well as an additional doctor and nurse

Friendship Dancers

The Friendship Dancers are celebrating over 40 years of dancing. The Dance group began in Bury then moved to Sudbury and finally settled at Long Melford Old School in 2003, meeting on Wednesday afternoons. We learn dances from Eastern Europe, Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic etc and give performances in authentic costumes. We have danced at fetes, W.I’s social evenings, care homes, weddings and taken part in Bury St Edmunds and Sudbury Carnivals.

I have had a life long interest in folk dance and music and have fortunately been able to study and learn Folk Dance and music in the Czech Republic, Hungary and teachers in London. I love to share my knowledge with other people.

New members are always welcome, it doesn’t matter if you are a beginner or an experienced dancer we will teach you.

We are a friendly group and have great fun dancing and keeping at the same time.

Volunteers needed

The River Stour Trust is a charity formed in 1968 with the aim of keeping as much as the river as possible open for navigation from Cattawade to Sudbury for everybody to enjoyed. From Easter to the end of October we have boats at various locations along the river. Boats are kept at the Granary in Sudbury and do trips through Cornard lock to Henny . A boat is positioned at the Talbooth restaurant for pre or after lunch charters, to bring the bride to her wedding by water or the couple to their reception after the marriage ceremony. The boat at the Talbooth is also available on a Sunday for those having lunch to take a short trip on the river. The other part of our operation is at Flatford where we offer walk on half hour trips from Flatford to Fen bridge and back. The Trust has only one full time and one part time paid member of staff and the other people that do work for the Trust are all volunteers. The volunteers skipper the boats, help clear the river of over hanging tree branches, reed clearance, maintain the jetties, and carry out boat maintenance in the winter. The Trust’s present project is to get the Dedham lock back into operation. The new lock gates are made all that is required now is the funds to fit them. Like most organisations the River Stour Trust is always looking for volunteers either for skippering the boats or undertaking the other jobs that need to be done.

If you would like to volunteer have any questions and would like more information please contact me on email boac707@btinternet.com and I can either put you in contact with the right people in the Trust or answer your question.

We survived February despite the Easterly winds, the frozen surface of the arena, Alfie and Parys having mobility issues and lots of volunteers being off sick or on holiday! Naturally Babs and I are no bother, we just listen to the gossip and try to report on Shelley happenings.

The pupils of Tudor Primary School who donated £350 to charity recently. Several of the children made some cakes, set up a stall and sold their delicious treats to raise money for Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare. A big THANK YOU from everyone at SESAW for raising such a magnificent sum which will help look after cats, dogs and rabbits waiting for new homes.

My photos this month show the intrepid pupils from Chalk Hill Academy being taught by our Chairman Jan. A rare moment of sun and warmth has them competing in two-aside races to fetch objects from one end of the arena and hand over to their partner at the other end. The boys may claim that they can trot canter and gallop like all the good cowboys do, but the mere fact of being mounted on a live animal and under instruction from nononsense Jan focusses them on the realities of behaving well, listening to instructions, being responsible and treating volunteers and ponies with respect. It’s a great Thursday morning showcase for what we do. Thanks chaps!

Here's hoping you are all feeling a Spring in your steps now that those two dismal months are behind us. The live herd is beginning to taste new grass, and the daffs are struggling to appear on our drive way (where everyone parks...)

Supporting the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust

The 5th of July see's the birthday of the NHS and in 2023 they will be celebrating their 75th birthday

That's 75 years of caring for us all. We have realised, over the past few years, just how important this service is and how lucky we are to have people dedicated to caring for us from the minute we step through the doors.

Here at My WiSH Charity, we want to share the birthday love with two events to wish our National Health Service many happy returns.

Why not pour a cup of love this July with family, colleagues and friends? Who doesn't love a cuppa and a slice of cake so bake some buns, pour a brew and enjoy a natter while raising money to help us enhance the care of patients and support staff across the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust?

Love dressing up, then this event is for you!

We are asking you to dress head to toe in your favourite colour or dress as your favourite NHS hero. Wish you could wear that party dress you love more often?

Well now you can, wear it to the office! Love a bit of fancy dress? Now's your chance to be brave and wear it on a shopping trip! Or wear some wacky socks or tights to school to brighten up your classroom.

All we ask is you donate a minimum of £1 to your local NHS charity to help us continue to take care of you all alongside our amazing hospital.

Huge thanks to Pip and her family and friends for this fantastic donation to our WiSH Upon a Star Children's appeal.

If you live in Long Melford, you may have seen them just before Christmas as they helped Father Christmas travel around Long Melford. This donation will allow us to enhance the care of young patients at the West Suffolk Hospital and the community.

Enhancing care for you, your family, for life.

Sudbury Library

Hello Everyone!

Don’t forget we have changed things around. Our Timeout Tuesday session has been moved to Monday mornings at 10am. So, if you want to join a book group (part of our Toptime offer on the first Monday of each month) or just call in for a natter and a hot drink, please come along.

Donations are welcome but there is no obligation. On Wednesdays we have a Shared Reading Group open to all. On Thursdays we have Open Space from 2:15pm, if you are interested in having a friendly chat about wellbeing, a relaxed group where you can meet new people, have a chat, make new friends, or just listen in with word puzzles and colouring if you prefer — there is no pressure to take part!

There will also be a coffee and cake morning on Saturday 11th March from 10.30am to celebrate Suffolk Libraries Day. Call in for a cuppa and a slice of cake. Donations welcome. All proceeds to Suffolk Libraries. This event will be supported by the Friends of Sudbury Library.

The Hearing Aid Clinic is back on the 3rd Monday of each month. The next visit is on 20th March; you can come along to pick up new batteries but will need to make an appointment if you need a repair. Ring 01473 286060 to book.

Please also consider our home library service which is available for anyone who loves to read but cannot get to the library, perhaps because they have a disability or mobility issue. This service is run by volunteers who pick up books, audio books or DVDs from the library and take them to customers in their own homes. It provides a lifeline for many older and disabled people across Suffolk who also benefit from the regular social interaction too. Volunteers can visit private homes or care homes. All our volunteers have completed an application, reference and DBS checking process, and a training programme. If you, a relative, or friend would benefit from the service, contact hls@suffolklibraries.co.uk or 01473 351249 or let us know at Sudbury library and we will pass the details along to our home library service co-ordinator.

For children: - Wordplay storytelling, songs, and rhymes is for our smallest customers on a Thursday morning at 10.30am. Stay and Play sessions follow immediately afterwards till midday. We have Storytime sessions for children on Saturday mornings from 10.30am. Lego club is on Saturday afternoons at 2.30pm. (50p per child). Our monthly Children’s Book Group will meet on Saturday 4th March at 11am. This month we’ll be discussing “Anne of Green Gables” by L.M Montgomery. The next book will be available. We also have free activities on our Sunday Fundays.

Suffolk Libraries is a charity and the money we raise helps us continue to offer all the activities we do across the county. We have activity packs, bookmarks and more for sale; call in to see what’s available.
