Coast to Coast Walk by Janet and Andy Welsh in aid of Sudbury Hive

Janet and Andy Welsh have completed their 192 mile walk on the Coast to Coast Path from St Bees on the Atlantic Ocean in Cumbria, to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea in Yorkshire.

After 17 days of continuous walking, they threw the pebbles they had collected at St Bees into the water at Robin Hood's Bay while, as tradition dictates, dipping their toes in the sea. The most challenging day was the 17 mile stretch from Patterdale to Shap which included over 3,500ft of ascent, but Andy and Janet arrived at their final destination tired but elated. Having never undertaken such a long, demanding walk, they took on this challenge to raise money for the refurbishment of the Hive Community Hub in School Street.

Donations in support of their amazing trek can still be made via the link at gofund. me/545d3c75. All donations, small or large, will be greatly appreciated and make their sore feet and tired limbs worth all their effort!

At the finish pictured seated back right.

The Hive Community Hub provides facilities for local voluntary and charitable groups, who undertake a host of activities, including support for some of the most vulnerable people in our community. Hive has ambitious plans to develop its premises into a modern facility, by renovating this historic former Church to create a much more versatile space for use by local people. The next phase, costing around £70,000, includes remodelling the kitchen to create an office, and completely gutting the existing kitchen so that modern units and equipment can be installed, as well as adding insulation to the roof space above Friars Hall and redecorating.

Fun day at Lake Avenue

We have had some fantastic donations in recently thanks to a variety of fundraisers. First up is Lake Avenue Stores who held a fun day. Unfortunately, they held it on a day of torrential rain but it didn’t stop play and owners, Mash and Arti Odedra, managed to raise £500.

The fun day was a thank you to their customers for all their support, especially during the Covid 19 pandemic and they really went to town with a magician, games, cakes galore and a fantastic tombola.

Mash said “It was difficult for everyone during the pandemic, but the community stuck by us. It was always in our mind to do a thank you event and on the back of that we thought we could raise some money for a local charity. We asked our followers and My WiSH came up trumps.”

Huge thanks to Mash and Arti and to all those that attended the day. Afternoon teas supports the cancer unit

Mum and daughter duo, Andrea and Jodie Davey served up nearly 130 afternoon teas for the cancer unit at the West Suffolk Hospital and raised an incredible £1983.

The couple wanted to say thank you for the care given to friends and family and, as they both own catering businesses, what better way to do this than to raise money with a pop-up tea shop.

Andrea, owner of Elite Cakes and Buffets and Jodie, who owns Kitty Bakes, sold out of tickets within two minutes with 100 people attending Melton Pavilion and another 30 enjoying their afternoon teas as a takeaway.

Andrea said “We managed to get some wonderful prizes to raffle off too. Lots of these were from Jodie’s friends who are all small business owners. We are pleased to support the Macmillan unit at the West Suffolk Hospital so people can see just where their donation is going”.

Runner runs through the night for the maternity unit

Keen runner, James Seager, did not one 5k park run but 20 park runs starting at 5.30pm and finishing at 9.30am the next day.

James followed the route of the Bury Park Run at Nowton Park with the final lap being on the Saturday morning as the other park runners ran their 5k.

The aim was to raise money for the maternity unit at the hospital as he “wanted to give something back” after the birth of his daughter, Bella and his amazing efforts have resulted in a donation of £575.

James said “I want to ensure everyone receives the same care my wife and Bella received.” It was a complex birth and, at times dangerous, as Bella’s heart rate dropped but James continued to say, “The staff were brilliant from beginning to end and we can’t thank them enough”. You can find out more about your local NHS charity and read both these stories in full at www.mywishcharity.co.uk.

The Mayor writes...

In May I was honoured and privileged to be elected as your Sudbury Mayor for the next twelve months.

I would like to say a big thank you to all those who have sent me emails, cards and face book messages of congratulations. I would also like to thank our wonderful voluntary organisations in Sudbury. They do a fantastic job, and we would be lost without them.

I would like to name them all as my chosen charities but as there are over 250 in Sudbury it would not be possible. However, I have selected two for my year as Mayor. Mental Health is very much a priority with me and the impact this can have on our communities. I am sure that, at some time, we have all been affected. Adrian and I lost a very dear friend when she took her own life, and our daughter is also a mental health nurse. So, one of my charities is the Kernos Centre. They provide counselling and support for people of all ages. They are also celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year. During my 8 years as the Cabinet Member for Housing at Babergh I experienced some sad cases of people who were homeless or at risk of loosing their home. I have shed many tears with some, but I have also shared some very happy moments. Homelessness can and does cause great distress, isolation and loneliness. The Christopher Centre provides support and advice to all those in need and I have pleasure in naming them as my other charity.

I am extremely honoured and privileged to be your Mayor for the next twelve months. I am determined to be a strong advocate for Sudbury throughout Suffolk and beyond as well as for the needs of our people and our communities in Sudbury.

I am hoping that we as a Town Council can put politics to one side and work closely together for the good of our lovely Town. At the time of this going to print I have only attended one event. This was the presentation of the Ascension vouchers. A custom that goes back many years and it was great seeing so many people there as well as members of the Common Lands Trust.

On Sunday 28th May I attended, unofficially, the Suffolk v Shropshire NCCA Trophy 50 Over Competition. Both Adrian and I had a fantastic day with great cricket, lovely weather and nice people. Well done to Sudbury Cricket Club for hosting this prestigious event. It was extremely well organised.

Please do not forget Party in the Park on the 16th July. It is a wonderful opportunity for people and families in Sudbury to have a great day out. I look forward to meeting many of you while out and about, whether it be at an official event, walking around our lovely town or simply out walking. Take care and keep safe,

family assets for younger generations. But many are not familiar with these types of Wills or realise their benefit until speaking with a solicitor.

Property Life Interest Trust Wills can be of particular benefit to couples considering planning for future care and preservation of assets. Specialist advice on Property Life Interest Trust Wills can provide for both protecting the financial position and living arrangements of the surviving spouse, as well as protecting assets for future generations. For couples with children from a previous relationship, Property Life Interest Trust Wills can also prove an effective legal solution.

What number of property transactions fall-through? Rightmove report that, on average across the country, approximately 30% of property transactions fall-through2. It is a much higher percentage than most buyers and sellers expect it to be.

Reduce the risk of your transaction falling-through Those using Holmes & Hills Solicitors’ conveyancing services benefit from a 22% higher successful completion rate compared to the national average. This means your transaction has an increased chance of successfully completing when Holmes & Hills is advising and representing you in your property transaction.

Taking advice and making early decisions to plan effectively

It is often the case that a couple’s main asset is their family home, and many are conscious of this when considering planning their estate and inheritance for their loved ones. However, many couples can limit their ability to effectively plan and preserve their estate, or limit their available options for this, if planning their estate is left too late.

This is certainly the case in respect of how their home will be treated upon death. The earlier advice is sought, the better in this regard.

KERNOS CENTRE IN SUDBURY IS RECRUITING…

For over 20 years the Kernos Centre registered charity in Friars Street, has provided a professional counselling & psychotherapy service to anyone in need, particularly to those not provided for through statutory provision, and who have no means of financing counselling support. All of Kernos’ work is focused on improving the mental health of the adults, children and young people that are referred to them by Schools, G.P’s, Social Services, Children’s Centres, individuals, families, etc. Over this time Kernos has received over 4,790 referrals, for both face to face sessions at the Centre and online sessions. It has an ever- growing waiting list, and in order to cope with the ever-increasing demands for its services, Kernos needs to fill 3 part-time vacancies.

1) A fully qualified Counsellor, who is experienced with working with children and young people, to join the counselling team.

2) A fully qualified Counsellor, who is experienced with working with Adults.

3) An Admin volunteer, to help in the office, welcoming clients and answering the the phone and booking appointments.

The Kernos Centre, 32-34 Friar Street. Sudbury email: admin@kernos.org

Property can be held jointly in one of two ways. Property held as “Joint Tenants” will pass automatically to the surviving owner under survivorship rules whereas, property held as “Tenants in Common” will pass under the terms of a Will. For couples to effectively plan their estate, it is often necessary for their main residence to be owned as Tenants in Common, providing each with a % share ownership which can be directed into a Trust upon death.

What is a Property Life Interest Trust Will and what does it do?

Why do property transactions fall-through? Your transaction might fallthrough for a number of reasons, including your buyer finding another property; a surveyor identifying issues with the property; or a buyer’s solicitor identifying issues surrounding matters such as rights of way, covenants, lease terms, easements, overage, options or boundary issues. Why is Holmes & Hills’ successful completion rate 22% higher? Holmes & Hills has a large team of 22 property lawyers dealing with second-hand, new-build and shared ownership property across the country. The size of the team means there is unlikely to be an issue the team hasn’t seen and resolved before. Proactively identifying and resolving problems means we can keep your transaction on course, reducing the risk of your property transaction falling through and securing you a successful completion. Benefit from fixed fee packages As well as an increased chance of your transaction successfully completing, Holmes & Hills provides fixedfee residential conveyancing quotes with no hidden charges. When you obtain conveyancing quotations from other law firms you may find charges for completing Stamp Duty Land Tax forms, dealing with lenders and leasehold fees. With Holmes & Hills, these items are included within our legal fee. We give you a simple, transparent, fixed-fee quotation.

A solicitor is able to re-organise a couple's ownership of a property alongside preparing a Will for you, so as to ring fence each individual's property share in a Trust for future generations and identified beneficiaries. The surviving spouse/partner is protected by having a lifetime right of residence in the property and can be one of the trustees (managers) of the Trust. Therefore, the gift of your respective share in your principal residence at death is made to your trustees on trust and is subject to the surviving spouse/partner's right to live in the property for their lifetime. The Trust can be flexible in that the surviving spouse/partner will be able to move to another property using all or part of the value of the property.

Partner with Holmes & Hills to secure your transaction By working in partnership with our clients, local estate agents, mortgage brokers, and financial advisors, Holmes & Hills’ residential property lawyers will ensure a smooth transaction, whilst protecting your legal interests.

Call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 and ask to speak to Paige Hornabrook or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk.

1Holmes & Hills’ successful completion rate is calculated using sample data for 526 residential property transactions started between July 2022 to September 2022 and is compared to the national average successful completion rate of 70.3% (provided by Rightmove, 13/02/2023).

2Rightmove data supplied on 13/02/2023.

Any surplus capital not used in the purchase of a new property can be invested and the income can be paid to the surviving spouse/partner for their lifetime. The surviving spouse or partner can decide to make gifts to the family if they do not need the surplus capital or income. Property Life Interest Trust Wills are very flexible, with the surviving spouse/partner even able to rent out the property and receive the rental income.

Swim The Night report in a nutshell…

These types of Wills and arrangements can often be recommended where couples (married or unmarried) wish to plan for future care and preservation of assets for future generations and/or provide for children from a previous relationship, whilst at the same time providing security and peace of mind to the surviving spouse/partner.

Speak to an expert from Holmes & Hills Solicitors

It is always a good idea to take advice when thinking about planning for the future, planning your estate and planning for care. When considering whether Life Interest Trust Wills are appropriate for your circumstances and wishes, your solicitor will also consider your Inheritance Tax position. As mentioned, it is advisable to seek advice sooner rather than later to ensure all legal solutions and options remain available to you.

For expert advice on planning for the future, contact Holmes & Hills on 01787 275275 or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk and speak with one of our specialists from your local Holmes & Hills office.

Taking on 12 miles of swimming over the 12 hours of the night when sensible people should be sleeping was my biggest challenge yet. After a bad start with goggles that must have got damaged as they leaked as soon as I started, I eventually settled into my rhythm and completed the first 6 miles at the more or less the pace I had planned to race at. But having basically completed the distance of a swimming marathon but realising I had it all to still do again, drained me mentally and physically. It became an act of determination until mile 10 when I knew I was into the final quarter, this gave me a second wind in mile 10 and then I got a big boost as my family arrived to cheer me on through miles 11 and 12. In that last mile, I knew I was going to achieved something that I wouldn’t have even dreamed of of attempting 10 years ago!

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre

Hello Everyone,

Why not join one of our social groups? Our Adult Group is on Monday mornings at 10am. So, if you want to join a book club (part of our Toptime offer on the first Monday of each month) or just call in for a natter and a hot drink, please come along. Donations are welcome but there is no obligation. On Wednesdays we have a Shared Reading Group open to all. On Thursdays we have Open Space from 2:15pm, if you are interested in having a friendly chat about wellbeing, you can join our relaxed group where you can meet new people, have a chat, make new friends, or just listen in with word puzzles and colouring if you prefer; there is no pressure to take part!

Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun!. This will be my last blog of the summer term and what a bonkers time we have had with that description. I heard tell we could blame El Nino for the horrible cold wind everyone in East Anglia had to suffer, and the lack of rain.

Practising 2 elements of the Countryside Challenge are Belle and her young rider: posting a letter and opening a gate. The riders must remember to say a ‘thank you’ to the ‘farmer’ as they pass. Our winners will be announced too late for this blog but we have a Facebook page called The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding RDA where successes will be celebrated.

The Hearing Aid Clinic is held on the 3rd Monday of each month. The next visit is on 17th July, when you can come along to pick up new batteries but you will need to make an appointment for repairs by ringing 01473 286060. Please also consider our home library service which is available for anyone who loves to read but cannot get to the library. If you, a relative, or friend would benefit from the service, contact hls@suffolklibraries.co.uk, ring 01473 351249, or let us know at Sudbury library and we will pass the details on to our home library service co-ordinator.

We all say a huge thank you to Mary Thornley for being here every day for two weeks to judge riders doing The Countryside Challenge (beginning June 5th) and Dressage (beginning June 12th) Rosettes are being awarded to all who participate.

Looking ahead to when we resume rides in September there are to be two fund raisers in that month. The much missed Stride Out, date to be confirmed, and a Dog Show on Sunday 24th, so please come and support us then.

June’s Indoor Market at the Elmsett and Aldham Village Hall was the coolest place to be in the area – it being 28 degrees outside! There was a lovely atmosphere and lots of people enjoying browsing and partaking of the wonderful refreshments provided by the ECO group. The community donation stalls made another £27 that went directly to St Elizabeth Hospice on the day. The total profit made after expenses is accumulating gradually and I will donate the whole sum made from the monthly markets at the end of the year. It currently stands at £240 so a huge thank you to all my lovely stall holders as well as everyone who comes along to support the market, second Saturday of every month.

Rotary Round-up

Ken’s SESAW News

In response to a newspaper appeal from a pupil at St Gregory Primary School in Sudbury, who was concerned that some of her friends appeared to not have enough to eat because of the impact of the current economic situation, the Rotary Club donated £200 towards the purchase of supplementary food. President, Roger Green handed over the Rotary donation when he met Cherry in School. He was joined by Chairman and Trustee of Sudbury Market Town Partnership, Lesley Ford-Platt, who presented a donation of £500 from that charity to also help with providing extra food at lunch-time.

At Club Assembly on June 19th, incoming President, Tony Platt, outlined his plans for the Club for the year ahead and, on 3 July, at the presidential handover event, members brought along picnic lunches and were greeted at Tony's house with a glass of Pimms to enjoy in the relaxed space of his garden.

Now that’s something you don’t see ever y day Maisie, the spr inger and I were meeting the lovely people at Lush Cosmetics in Ipswich because they were donating profits from their Char ity Pot cream to SESAW Suddenly we saw a human striding through the precinct with a tall contraption strapping to his back Apparently it was the Google Ear th guy, mapping the precinct with a 360 ̊ camera And I thought he was there just to photograph me! Mind you, Maisie and I were soon the centre of attention again but I really didn’t know where to look when she rolled on her back for tummy tickles That dog is SO embarrassing! I should explain about Maisie She arr ived at SESAW one Chr istmas, in great pain, hardly able to walk Luckily our talented vet was able to correct a bir th defect on her legs She patiently endured a long recover y per iod, remaining calm as her dressings were changed and licking ever yone who cared for her Two years later our Spaniel enjoys life, goes for shor t walks and loves nothing better than a squeaky toy

On 17 July, the District Governor, Bob Maskall, will be the Club's guest for lunch at Newton Green Golf Club. The social event planned for July 24 will be a visit to Clare Country Park, with a variety of optional activities: beginning with refreshments at the café, and then a choice of visiting the castle ruins, walking the footpath routes, and having lunch in the café or taking along picnics (in Rotary we do like the informality and chance to share our friendships at our picnic lunches!).

Looking ahead to August, we have yet to confirm the speaker for Monday 7, but will be delighted to welcome Andy and Janet Welsh on 14 August when they will recount their amazing adventure, walking 192 miles coast to coast during May this year.

Our volunteers are looking forward to attending the Eight Ash Green Music Festival on 21st July and then it’s all systems go for our own Open Day and Fun Dog Show, 12 - 4 pm on Sunday 29th July at the Sanctuar y

Babergh Chair supports a cause close to her heart

New Chair of Babergh District Council will be supporting a cause close to her heart which "offers hope to others".

Cllr Elisabeth Malvisi, Independent member for Long Melford, was elected as the new council Chair on 23 May. Cllr Simon Dowling, Green party member for Hadleigh North, was elected to serve as Vice Chair. For her term, Cllr Malvisi’s chosen charity will be Long Melford Men's Shed. It supports men's mental wellbeing by providing a space which helps reduce isolation, develop new skills and encourage new connections and friendships.

Cllr Malvisi said: “It’s a new local chapter of a national initiative that aims to help raise awareness of the mental health struggles that men can sometimes experience, often in plain sight.

"It creates a space for men to help tackle feelings of isolation and provide a way for them to actively contribute to their community and purpose.

"I have experienced the loss of a son who struggled to face difficult circumstances, and I wanted to take this opportunity to help men across the district recognise their skills and help and support an organisation that offers hope to others.”

Tel: 01206 265180

Cllr Malvisi, who has previously served as the cabinet member for environment, succeeds former Chair Cllr Kathryn Grandon.

Facts and Figures from the Past

I recently found some facts about a father and son who caused quite a stir in the surrounding area. They were definitely not saints. The father Charles was murdered, and his son also named Charles was hung for the murder. Charles John Drew senior was an English lawyer at attorney. He lived in Long Melford where he owned two properties: a large house with estate, on the edge of the town and a small office in the High Street. He was quite a character from the information I gleaned. His behaviour caused great concern to his neighbours as he moved his wife and five daughters into the lower part of his house, that was normally reserved for servants. This was so that he could have his mistress living in the upper more comfortably furnished part of the house! The son also called Charles was busy gambling, smuggling, drinking and mixing with the local poachers. He felt abandoned by his father who had refused to fund a university education that he should have received as the son from a wealthy well respected family. Charles was in a relationship with Elizabeth (Betsy) Boyer who was the housekeeper at Liston Hall. It seems that his father did not approve of his son being in a relationship of someone who he considered a much lower class. They were so concerned that Charles would be cut out of the will when his father died, that Betsy convinced Charles that he should shoot his father. Charles was very friendly with Edward Humphries landlord of the Angel in Long Melford. Charles offered Edward £200 to kill his father (that £200 would be roughly worth £23,000 today). On the night of January 31st, Elizabeth provided a short blunderbuss filled with a pack of lead slugs and a cartridge of gunpowder. The three then rode to main family house, had a large brandy each and made their way to the smaller house where they knew Charles senior would be. The following morning a servant found Charles Snr dead, lying on his back by the front door which had been left open. Three pieces of lead were lodged in his body and three further pieces lay nearby. The servant who lived at the premises said he was sound asleep and hadn’t heard anything.

On the 12th of February 1740 the London Gazette offered a pardon to any secondary accomplice who would give information leading to the arrest of the murderer. John Gent from Long Melford also offered a reward of £100. Charles seemingly had disappeared; however, he was eventually found in a brothel in Leicester Fields in London on 15th of March. He had changed his name to Thomas Roberts, he was dressed quite differently to his previous mode of dress. He was arrested and sent to Newgate Prison. He offered Jonathon Keate, one of the jailers a bribe of £1,000 to release him and organise a boat to France. Keate declined and informed the Warden, Mr Ackerman. The following day he was moved to the Prison in BurySt-Edmunds. On the 29th of March he was tried at the Assizes; the Trial lasted for 5 hours and involved 15 witnesses. The Jury found him guilty, his response was he murdered his father because he had refused to pay of his debts. Charles was visited by his sisters before he was publicly hanged on the 12th of April, in front of a large crowd outside the County Jail. He was spared the ignominy of being gibbeted (An upright post to which the body was hung as a public display). He is buried in the chancel of Acton Church due to the influence and persuasion of Rev Charles Umferville, husband of his sister Mary.

They obviously didn’t waste a lot of time keeping someone in prison. 14 days from the trial to his hanging. Maybe they were worried that he may attempt to escape again.

Ever passed through the lovely village of Long Melford and seen a cathedral-proportioned church at the top of the village green? If so, you’ll have spotted the beautiful Grade 1 listed medieval wool church of Holy Trinity, which has overseen the village for more than five centuries, being built on original foundations of an earlier Saxon church. It has the accolade of being the longest church in Suffolk, due to its separate, exterior Lady Chapel. Just imagine what events it has been part of during those years – five plagues; two pandemics; the Reformation; a turbulent civil war; Restoration of the monarchy; an industrial revolution; two World Wars; 22 coronations (plus an abdication) and the creation of the internet! All events interwoven into the threads of rural village life against the backdrop of a spiritual Christian ministry.

So, a church with a colourful history, design and heart, including rare and beautiful medieval stained glass windows which have bathed the building in their glorious refracted colours. However, 500 years of weather, war and general wear and tear has taken a huge toll on glass and masonry, leading to urgent major window restoration work on the 38 clerestory (high level) windows.

The repairs require the erection of substantial interior scaffolding over many months but by being innovative with the smaller space available, regular services will continue to be held, as well as a range of planned concerts and events. Visitors are encouraged to come and see how the scaffolding is being used as a backdrop for a series of informative displays on topics such as:

• the medieval stained glass

• the history of scaffolding, its use and abuse

• the layout of the church and the ornaments and vestments used

• the ministry of church in the wider community including toddler group, youth group, messy church, and services at residential homes

• and much more, including a children’s display with crafts

The exhibition opened to the public from Monday, 19 June and two special weekends the first held June 23rd-25th with another planned September 15th-17th, both will offer dynamic events for visitors to take part in. We are planning children’s activities such as dressing up, Lego modelling and a treasure hunt. There will be enactments from the church’s long history; bell-ringing; organ music; brass rubbing; tower tours with the possible opportunity to abseil down (!); plus guided tours of the works to the clerestory windows with live pictures and commentary courtesy of a drone. The weekends’ activities will be announced by the firing of a live cannon on the village green!

Make sure you can help your partner or a parent, should they need assistance

The church will be open every day from 10-5 until the end of October, with a lovely shop to browse. So come and visit this wonderful building whether it’s to experience the architecture, exhibitions and activities on offer, or just to sit quietly in a welcoming space to reflect on whether God really does matter in this modern world and why.

News from the Sudbury History Society

Our talk this month will be by Peter Minter, owner of The Bulmer Brick & Tile Company Ltd and leading authority on the history of bricks and building heritage:

73% of people think IF a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. similarly, 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can't make them yourself*. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Should your spouse/partner or parent become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and neither a partner nor next of kin will be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. For example, this would mean being unable to deal with financial institutions in respect of accounts and pensions, the Department for Work and Pensions, or utility companies. Similarly, a next of kin will not be able to make decisions regarding the health and welfare of a spouse/partner, parent or other relative, including where and what care should be provided, as well as what end of life care should be received, if any.

To assist your spouse/partner, parent or other relative with affairs during their lifetime, or make certain decisions you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means they will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

Common

reasons for needing to help

Often people need to assist with these matters because their spouse/partner, parent or relative has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident.

The meeting is free for members and £2 for non-members. We look forward to seeing members again and welcoming new members. To discover more about The Sudbury History Society, please visit: www.sudburyhistorysociety.co.uk

What happens if LPAs are not in place?

Coach Trip Sudbury History Society

This month’s Coach Trip: Friday 21st July – Sutton Hoo National Trust members free, Non NT £15 per person entrance, plus £18 per person for coach. Bookings taken until Tuesday 11th July. Please email: info@ sudburyhistorysociety.co.uk.

If you want to help your partner or parent with property, financial, health or welfare decisions and they do not have Powers of Attorney in place and were incapable of making them, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Until the Court authorises your application you are unable to deal with the persons money or property, and will be unable to make decisions regarding their health and welfare.

What are the two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney?

All trips leave Sudbury Bus Station at 9am. Non-members welcome.

LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:

July's Advice Column

We’ve booked a package holiday to Spain. It’s our first time booking this sort of getaway, and a friend recently had a terrible experience when things went wrong on a similar trip. What sort of help is available if something does go wrong?

Hopefully you’ll have a lovely time but if something does go wrong with your package holiday, the Citizens Advice website www.citizensadvice. org.uk has lots of information about what to do if something goes wrong with your holiday and what compensation you may be eligible for.

Firstly, tell the company or travel agent you booked with as soon as possible. This way you’re more likely to be able to get it sorted quicker. If you don’t say anything until you get home, you might get less or no compensation at all.

If the holiday you went on turned out to be lower in value than the one you originally booked, you can make a claim for ‘loss of value’. For example, you paid for a deluxe room but only got a standard one, if it wasn't sorted out at the time you can claim back the difference in value.

You can also claim compensation for any extra money you have to spend while away, for example the hotel was a bus ride away from the beach rather than across the road as advertised. This is called claiming for ‘outof-pocket’ expenses. If this does happen make sure you keep all your receipts for things like bus journeys.

If big parts of the trip you booked didn’t happen or services weren’t provided, for example a planned two-day excursion was cancelled and no alternative was organised, you can make a claim for ‘loss of enjoyment’. You can also make this claim if something happens that causes you distress or disappointment, such as the pool was closed for the whole trip. It’s worth noting that there’s no strict guidance on how much you can claim for loss of enjoyment but any claim you make must be reasonable. You can’t get compensation if you simply didn’t enjoy the holiday or if the problem was out of the holiday company’s control - like bad weather. Check the information you received when you made the booking to see what you’re supposed to get. If you don’t get the service you’ve been promised, you may be entitled to compensation for breach of contract. You might also be able to claim from your travel insurance – check if your policy covers this.

If you’re still not sure what to do, call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline 0808 223 1133 or talk to an adviser online through the Citizens Advice website.

For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www. citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/ contact

We are providing advice by telephone and email Monday –Thursday, 10am – 3pm.

Writing from the Rectory: July 2023

The internet has revolutionised how we receive information- we can hear and watch stories, fact or fake, from around the world at a click of a button. Similarly, some centuries earlier, the printing press changed society overnight allowing ordinary people access to news and information like never before. Before then, information was shared by word of mouth and knowledge debated in religious buildings and market squares.

Jesus was schooled in the Jewish tradition of debating with other scholars in the towns, villages, and synagogues; very often answered a question with question, wanting people to come to their own conclusions. Jesus really valued what everyone had to say and wanted folk to have the opportunity to hear and know precisely what the scriptures say. He got furious when ordinary people were excluded, for whatever reason, from knowing God and worshipping Him.

When Oxford and Cambridge were founded, students had to study theology and attend chapel many times a day. When the bible was printed and then translated into English a great revolution began. Ordinary people could see for themselves what only those with the privilege of an education could read and interpret. Now, the internet allows most of us access to numerous translations but also to opinions of every kind regarding the interpretation of the bible and even its reliability.

As a teenager, the confirmation bible I was presented with gathered dust on my bookshelves. At university I met people who not only read the bible but memorised verses, believed in the miracles and tried to put Jesus’ advice into practice. It marked the transformation of my life and now it provides me with food for the soul and a lamp for my feet, to see a way forwards in the darkness.

What about you? Why not grab yourself a free ticket and hear first-hand what the bible really says by enjoying a word-for-word performance of St Mark’s gospel at St Gregory’s Church on Friday 7th July at 7pm?

Tickets available at St Gregory's Church event tickets from TicketSource. ‘Action-packed with no less than 19 miracles, the book of Mark was written to be shared live with first century audiences, in one sitting. …… I AM MARK is the resulting full-bodied drama, with its characters and nuances brought startlingly to life.
