Parking back on the agenda for Babergh as it seeks to balance books ‘An increasingly difficult challenge’ – parking is back on the agenda for Babergh District Council, as it seeks to balance the books, support its high streets, and put the brakes on climate change. Subsidising the councils’ current three-hour free parking in its car parks in villages and towns including Sudbury, Hadleigh and Lavenham, cost the council approximately £425K this year, with the cost set to increase further next year. With the council facing a budget gap of at least £1.5m next year, it says it can no longer afford the subsidy if it is to continue delivering other essential services for its residents and communities. A paper is now expected to go to Babergh cabinet in January recommending a targeted consultation with affected towns and parishes to develop options for changes to parking tariffs next year.

Babergh leader Cllr David Busby said: “Like all local authorities, we are facing tough financial decisions for the year ahead and find ourselves facing an increasingly difficult challenge. “We need to balance our books; we need to support our high streets and town centre businesses by encouraging trade; and we need to encourage more sustainable travel in order reduce congestion in our towns, improve air quality and tackle climate change. “Thankfully, these things are not mutually exclusive. By introducing a revised tariff that includes short-term charges that are as low as continued page 2

The Mayor writes... Dear All, I hope you all had a great Christmas and I wish you a Healthy and Happy 2024. My thoughts and prayers are with those who find this time of the year challenging and difficult for many reasons. As referred to in my December article I have been very busy attending carol services and other events. It always gives me great satisfaction and pleasure in being part of these events. So much planning and hard work goes into making these events a success and well done to all those involved. During the last few months, I attended the St John Cadets meeting session and gave a talk on being Mayor. There were some very interesting questions. Great to see so many young enthusiastic and budding nurses, doctors and paramedics. They have many members and more on a waiting list, but the problem is suitable accommodation. Their current accommodation is now too small, and they are looking for other premises to enable them to train more young people. The Halstead Torchlight Procession is always a cold, but pleasant evening and the one held in December was no exception. On the 23rd of November I visited St. Gregory’s Church who hosted Christmas Through the Keyhole. The Church was set up in various sections, including Joseph’s workshop etc. The artistic creation was amazing, and I know that the school children who visited the church really enjoyed themselves. On the 26th November I attended the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra Autumn Concert. It was held in the church in Lavenham and was full to the beams. Wow what a wonderful evening of fantastic music. Thank you to all involved for a lovely evening. Also, in November I attended the Christopher Centre AGM. The work they do is amazing, and I am so pleased to have them as one of my charities. On the 24th November I was privileged to open the newly renovated Waitrose. It is very encouraging that Waitrose have made this commitment to Sudbury and a pledge to elevate our towns heart and soul. I would like to take this opportunity to pass on their thanks to the people of Sudbury. I was also invited to meet with the Chief Executive of Hourglass. Like myself I expect many of you will not be aware of this voluntary organisation. Although based in Sudbury they work with people nationally. Hourglass provides a specialist community response service for older June people text.qxp_Layout 1 06/05/2021 11:11 Page 20 experiencing physical, mental and financial abuse. We had a very interesting and mind provoking discussion. On Friday the 24th November, as Mayor I was privileged to attend the switching on of the Christmas lights. It was brilliant to see the town so busy. I was pleased to have Mel Edwards assist me with the switch on as she gives up so much of her free time to provide the Town Council Food Bank. An event like this takes a great deal of planning and organising and I would like to give a big thank you to Teresa Elford and all the other officers who made this evening possible. In December I attended the Sudbury Choral Society for an evening of beautiful music and singing. It was a wonderful evening. They practice so hard to ensure that the evening is a success so well done to all. I also attended the library for a morning of carols with the Choral Society. At the time of my writing this article to ensure I meet the editor’s deadline I have many more events to attend and will be reporting these in my February article. To close I was thrilled to see that our own Mel Edwards was nominated for the James Cartlidge Community Champion Award. Mel works tirelessly to support children and adults who are marginalised in our community - well done Mel! See you all in February and please keep well and safe.

I have concerns about a possible artificial pitch at the Layham Road site, right beside the River Brett. There should never be a plastic/rubber pitch anywhere near a river. That area on the rugby field always floods when we get heavy rain in the winter months. Writing from the Rectory I have not been someone to welcome in the New Year in style – indeed with young children it has been some years since I even saw midnight on New Year’s Day by choice! Whilst I recognise that notion of celebrating the promise of a new beginning and opportunities ahead, I don’t pin that idea to January 1st, but believe we always have a chance to wipe the slate clean and enjoy a fresh start. However, as 2023 draws to a close and 2024 beckons, I will take time to reflect on all that has happened this year and to count my blessings. Having a marker in time, when we can stop and take stock of all that has happened, all that we have been given, and give thanks is a gift in itself. Personally, and as a family we have much to be grateful for, but internationally this has been a very difficult year. As I have watched the horrors of the Israeli/Gaza conflict unfold, I have found myself noticing how much I have that I take for granted. The images from the Holy Land have brought home to me how fortunate I am to have glasses, toothpaste, a roof over my head, confidence that I am safe at night… and so there is much to be thankful for, whilst recognising the great need of others. Indeed, there are many homeless in our county this night who must contend without any of that list, and they can go largely unnoticed until we stop, think and reflect on our own situation and theirs. Perhaps as we start this new year full of hope that things will go well, or be better, we could consider extending a helping hand to another – be that funding a meal in one of our local cafes for someone who would otherwise go without, sending funds to help the humanitarian crises abroad or simply popping round to a lonely neighbour for a cup of tea and a chat. I pray that you might find your local church to be a place that can welcome you and offer that support, but also find that it can offer you so much more – a chance to wipe the slate clean and start again. Why not consider joining us at 10am one Sunday – a New Year’s Resolution if you like?

Staying Independent and Safe in your Home. Home holds a central place in everyone's life, but its suitability becomes particularly crucial for older or less abled individuals. The ability to enter and exit the house safely, navigate within, access essential facilities such as the bathroom, cook a meal, and reach the bed without risk all directly impact our dignity and overall wellbeing. If you've started to recognise that some of these tasks are becoming challenging to perform safely, it's time to consider making improvements. Unfortunately, many people find themselves unsure of where to begin, often burdened by concerns about the associated costs. However, financial assistance is available through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) for those with qualifying conditions so they can alter their homes to make life easier. A DFG is a means-tested grant that provides a maximum of £30,000 to make alterations to the home to help people remain independent and safe. This might include renovating a bathroom or kitchen to make it more accessible or converting a downstairs room to a wetroom or bedroom. To apply for a DFG, you can contact your local council or for additional information, visit www.gov.uk/disabled-facilities-grants. When it comes to addressing the crucial area of the bathroom, that's where our expertise shines - we’ve been creating bespoke accessible bathrooms and wetrooms for over 24 years. Sometimes our customers think they need a full renovation but more often than not they just need a few adaptations to make life a little easier such as the installation of grab rails near the toilet or installing a walk-in bath or shower that is easier to access. We understand it can be daunting when considering making alterations to your home, which is why we guide our customers every step of the way. Our friendly home surveyors visit customers in their homes to truly understand their challenges and to provide customised solutions that fit within their budgets. Our Customer Service team are always on hand if you have any questions throughout the process and our commitment to excellence is reflected in our 'Excellent' rating on Trustpilot. Our customers are at the heart of what we do, we’re still a family-run company since my wife Julie and I founded AHM Installations Ltd in 1999 drawing upon her nursing and caregiving experiences, along with my background in the mobility industry. We take pride in carefully guiding our customers through the installation of new bathroom equipment in their homes. Our mission is driven by a genuine desire to alleviate the struggles individuals face and our unwavering belief that we can always find a solution, regardless of the budget or situation. Please call number on our advert or visit www.ahminstallations.co.uk.

GoStart Community Transport GoStart Community Transport is a voluntary organization providing flexible and accessible communityled transport solutions. We aim to try and fulfill unmet local passenger transport needs. We provide and support a wide range of local people, including anyone who is elderly, anyone living in an isolated situation, or anyone experiencing loneliness . GoStart operates local services using one of a number of vehicles including 16 seater mini buses and smaller five seater MPVS. All our vehicles are fully accessible with side ramps or powered tail lifts allowing for safe easy access for pedestrians and passengers in wheelchairs. Most services are demand responsive services enabling passengers to be picked up from their front door at a preselected time, delivered to their destination, such as shops , medical facilities - or so that they can engage in social activities. Passengers are then returned safely home at a prearranged time. Other services provided include a routed public service twice a week between Sudbury and Bildeston. We also take groups of children to extra mural activities, provide transport support for other local voluntary and not for profit groups and weekend trips for people who are lonely or isolated. If you have a personal transport need or belong to a local group for whom passenger transport to events and activities is a problem, please look at our website www.gostart.org.uk. You can also contact our local office on 01787 242116 We will be pleased to try and arrange support with your passenger transport needs.

Rotary Club of Sudbury With a very successful Christmas Tree Festival, a street collection for local charities during the Sudbury’s Christmas Lights Switch-On, a celebration lunch and several fascinating speakers behind them, Sudbury Rotary members are now looking forward to the New Year's activities. The search now begins for this year's Rotary Youth Leadership Awards candidate to be supported by the Sudbury Club. This is an opportunity for a young person to spend a week at Grafham Water in Cambridgeshire. The criteria for selection are that the candidate should be between 18 and 26 on 1 September 2024 and be willing to undertake activities out of their normal comfort zone, taking part in team-building, team-working and leadership activities, meeting challenges and gaining confidence as an individual. The course will take place at the end of August. If a local school or business would like to recommend a potential candidate, or a local company would be interested in sponsoring a young person to attend this course, please do contact David Taylor, Sudbury Rotary Club's Secretary: secretary@ sudburyrotary.com. Rotary is open to people from all backgrounds and we would welcome more of you to join us. Unlike the image which you might have of your local Rotarians, we are not a group of serious, professional, older gentlemen in suits(!), but a mix of women and men of all ages and interests. The one thing which brings us together is our wish to support our community, here and through overseas projects, and to enjoy fun and friendship while doing so. Sudbury Rotary meets at Newton Green Golf Club on the first three Mondays of each month - with an optional lunch, giving an opportunity for us to hear from speakers on topics of interest, follow up on matters concerned with our activities, and to enjoy each other’s company. Visitors are always welcome, but please do telephone 07341 290415 to let us know you will be coming along. However, if a weekly meeting over lunch is not convenient for you, you might wish to consider joining ‘Rotary 2’, Sudbury’s new ‘Satellite’ Club which plans to meet more at times1to20/06/2018 suit its members SUDBURY July pageinformally form.qxp_Layout 12:01 Page 17 who can decide on projects they might wish to undertake for the benefit of our local community. January Advice Column: Winter Fuel Bills I am a single parent with two kids, and I’m really worried about how I’ll afford to pay my energy bills when I have to start putting the heating and lights on more now winter is here. At the moment I just about have enough money to cover my bills but there is nothing left over. The thought of getting into debt keeps me awake at night but the idea of my children being cold and possibly unwell as a result is just unbearable. What can I do? You are not alone - a record number of people came to Citizens Advice with energy debt in the first four months of 2023 (32,400) - a 112% increase on the same period in 2020 (15,200). There are things you can do to feel in control when it comes to your energy bills. There are some simple tips to help save money on your energy bills. They won’t cover all the extra costs, but they can make a difference: ● Check your thermostat: A room temperature between 18°C and 21°C is ideal for most people. Try turning your thermostat down by one degree within this range – it could save you around £115 a year. If a medical condition means you need a warmer home, ask your GP what room temperature you should aim for. ● Keep the heat in: Check your home for any gaps in the doors, windows and floors. Blocking any holes where you could get a draught could save you around £30 a year. It is important to allow for some ventilation as without it mould and damp can form. ● Turn off anything you’re not using: Turning your appliances, like TVs and washing machines, off instead of leaving them on standby could save around £60 a year. Turning off lights when you’re not using them – even if it’s just off for a few seconds - could save around £25 a year. ● Consider using LED lightbulbs, which cost less to run. ● Watch your water usage: Cutting your shower time by just one minute can make a difference. If everyone in a four-person household with a water meter did this, they could save around £75 a year. If you’re struggling to afford your energy bills, you might be able to get support from the government or your energy supplier. The first step is to contact your supplier to find out what they can offer. You may be eligible for benefits including the Warm Home Discount, Cold Weather Payments or the Household Support Fund, find out more about these on our website. For more information visit the Citizens Advice website at www. citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and South Suffolk Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/ contact We are providing advice by telephone and email Monday – Thursday, 10am – 3pm.

Sudbury Trefoil Guild The Trefoil Guild is part of the Guiding movement in that it supports the aims and principles of the movement. In 1920, women began forming unofficial groups to keep in touch with their old units and in 1930 the “Old Guides” was formed, although today anyone over the age of 18 can join – and since 1982 – men can join as well. The Girl Guides Association amalgamated the various groups of ‘Old Guides’ and in 1943 the name ‘Trefoil’ was adopted. In 1947 the various groups were first registered with Trefoil Guild. 2023 was a special year as all the guilds took part in a variety of activities to celebrate our 80th birthday. Trefoil is open to everyone who agrees to support and help others by carrying the spirit of Girlguiding into our communities. We ask our members to agree to this when they join. Sudbury Trefoil meets on the third Thursday of the month at the Old School, Wells Hall Road, Great Cornard, CO10 0NH, from 2-4pm. We have speakers, outings, craft work, auctions and many more activities. Although named Sudbury Trefoil, we cover Great Cornard, Lavenham and many outlying villages in the area. Our next two meetings are: January 18th : Our AGM, followed by our usual meeting when we finalise our yearly plans, and finally after a coffee break, by a quiz. February 15th : Craft for Thinking Day If you would like to join us – and you do not have had to have been a member of either the guiding or scouting movements to do so or you would like to find out more about Trefoil, please email me at skagway@hotmail.co.uk or phone (07775436060).
