New Ground Naming Rights Partner

Long Melford FC are delighted to announce our new ground naming rights partner.

For the first time in our club’s history players, fans and opponents will utter a new name when visiting Long Melford as we can officially announce a 3-year partnership with Skyline Networks as Stoneylands becomes…

The Skyline Networks Stadium

This historic partnership is another step along the path to success as we continue to build as a club both on and off the pitch and working with a partner like Skyline Networks shows our commitment to legacy, continuity and our local community.

Liam Poore, Operations Director at Skyline is a former LMFC player and he had this to say about the partnership: Being a Melford lad and a former player I have great pleasure in being able and in a position to support them. The club has some serious ambitions for the future with some great coaches, players and background members that makes this club feel more like a large local community family run team.

I am happy to be on board for the plans the club has and look forward to what the future holds.

And from our chairman, Geoff Thomas: We are delighted to link up with such a respected local company as Skyline Networks and naming the Long Melford football stadium. The Skyline Networks Stadium.

It also pleasing to have Liam Poore, a former Melford playing coming onboard. It will also be good to have Liam’s business knowledge and experience as we move forward with both our football plans and our plans for working in the community.

The Mayor writes...

Since becoming your Mayor, I have been kept very busy. This is good news as it means I have been getting out in our communities and beyond promoting our wonderful market town. One of the main concerns for people and businesses in Sudbury is crime and anti-social behaviour. To help me align these concerns I had a meeting with the new Police Inspector Ben Holland. It was an interesting meeting and, although he could not meet all my requests, we did reach some compromises. Feedback notes on this meeting and another one held with Inspector Holland on the 20th June, of which myself, Cllr. Steve Hall and Cllr. Adrian Stour, attended went to Full Council in July.

On the 16th June I attended the Open Day at the West Suffolk College, Cornard Road. Great event with many, very young, people in attendance and they loved and were fascinated with the Mayors Chain of Office. Great to see such enthusiasm from our young people.

On the 18th June I attended a fund raising event in the library to raise funds for the library. It was very hot but a well-attended event and a great opportunity to meet and greet.

On the 21st of June I was privileged to launch the 20th Anniversary of the Kernos Centre. It was a great evening including entertainment by some very talented Thomas Gainsborough School students. The Kernos Centre provide counselling and support for people of all ages who are struggling with mental health problem. Long may you continue.

On the 24th June I made an informal visit to the Rowing Club. As I am their President for the duration of my mayorship, I felt it would be nice to visit them and chat to their members. What a wonderful facility. Thank you for such a lovely welcome and taking time to show me around the facility and have chats with members.

The following day I attended the Sudbury Choral Society’s A Midsummer Medley. A very hot but most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday evening. We are very fortunate in Sudbury to have such an active Choral Society as well as the Orchestral Society. I strongly recommend you go to their concerts.

On the 29th June I attended the Thomas Gainsborough Graduation Ceremony. It was a privilege to see so many young people collect their certificates and to hear of their aspirations for the future. It was very encouraging to see such enthusiasm from the students and dedication from the teaching staff.

In the afternoon of the same day, I attended Mellish House, a home for people with Dementia. The home had been accredited for the outstanding care and approach to people suffering with this dreadful illness. It was an honour to unveil a plaque, together with our MP.

On the 4th July I attended American Day Independence. As always it was very moving to lay a wreath.

Last but not least after a few very busy weeks on the 9th July I attended the Aldeburgh Civic Service. Met some great people and spread the good word about Sudbury.

I will continue to attend as many events as possible both in Sudbury and beyond. I will also endeavour to use my time as your Mayor to help resolve some of the concerns and issues that you all have. I do not have a magic wand but that does not stop me from trying whenever I possibly can. Please keep well and safe.

You’re not alone: Support available as more people seek cost of living help

Find out what help you are entitled to – that is the message from the district councils and Citizens Advice, as residents and families continue to deal with the high cost of living.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils and Citizens Advice are calling on those feeling the financial squeeze to check what help they can access – particularly if they have not done so before.

The call comes as Sudbury and District Citizens Advice announce that they delivered £5,500 worth of fuel vouchers last financial year. Meanwhile

Mid Suffolk Citizen’s Advice shared that their team saw a huge spike in demand for their help, advising on 65% more issues than in the previous 12 months.

The biggest increases were from people looking for help with consumer goods, such as food, energy, phone and internet bills. This comes at the same time that research by Policy in Practice shows almost £19bn in support goes unclaimed every year, which could change the lives of millions of people nationwide.

Residents can contact their district council or local Citizens Advice to find out what help is available. There may be support that they are unaware of, and offers which help cut spending such as 'social tariffs' from internet and phone companies.

Colleen Sweeney, Chief Officer at Sudbury and District Citizen’s Advice, said: “We are all feeling the pressure of the increase in the cost of living. We want to reduce the stigma some people feel when asking for help, especially when they may not have done so before.

“Citizens Advice is a confidential service. This means any advice we offer you, or anything you ask us, won't be shared with anyone else. Most importantly, even during this busy period, everyone we see is treated with the same dignity and care.”

Sudbury Library

Our main focus will be The Summer Reading Challenge. The theme this year is Ready, Set Read! The Reading Agency has paired up with The Youth Sports Trust and the aim is to keep our youngsters active in mind and body throughout the summer holidays. You can join up (with a library card) at any time.

The Hearing Aid Clinic is held on the 3rd Monday of each month. The next visit will be on 21st August, when you can come along to pick up new batteries but you will need to make an appointment for repairs by ringing 01473 286060.

Why not join one of our social groups? Our Adult Group is on Monday mornings at 10am. So, if you want to join a book club (part of our Toptime offer on the first Monday of each month) or just call in for a natter and a hot drink, please come along. Donations are welcome but there is no obligation. On Wednesdays we have a Shared Reading Group open to all. On Thursdays we have Open Space from 2:15pm, if you are interested in having a friendly chat about wellbeing, you can join our relaxed group where you can meet new people, have a chat, make new friends, or just listen in with word puzzles and colouring if you prefer; there is no pressure to take part!

Please also consider our home library service which is available for anyone who loves to read but cannot get to the library. If you, a relative, or friend would benefit from the service, contact hls@suffolklibraries.co.uk, ring 01473 351249, or let us know at Sudbury library and we will pass the details on to our home library service co-ordinator.

Now that’s something you don’t see ever y day Maisie, the spr inger and I were meeting the lovely people at Lush Cosmetics in Ipswich because they were donating profits from their Char ity Pot cream to SESAW Suddenly we saw a human striding through the precinct with a tall contraption strapping to his back Apparently it was the Google Ear th guy, mapping the precinct with a 360 ̊ camera And I thought he was there just to photograph me! Mind you, Maisie and I were soon the centre of attention again but I really didn’t know where to look when she rolled on her back for tummy tickles That dog is SO embarrassing!

Whilst we have just celebrated the NHS’s 75th anniversary, we all know that investment and innovation are key to ensure the long-term sustainability of the health service. I therefore strongly welcome the new NHS Long Term Workforce Plan - the biggest staff programme for a generation - backed by more than £2.4 billion in government investment. The Plan sets out how the NHS will address existing vacancies; meet the challenges of a growing and ageing population by recruiting and retaining hundreds of thousands more staff. Most importantly, we are making real progress locally with the brand-new West Suffolk Hospital confirmed as a priority within the Government’s commitment to 40 new hospitals, with a complete rebuild agreed and outline planning now also in place. I know how welcome this will be to the many people in Sudbury and the surrounding area who use, or work at, West Suffolk.

Also on the local front, it was great to see that St Peter’s on Market Hill has been formally rebranded as Sudbury Arts Centre, following major multimillion-pound restoration work, resulting in a multi-functional space in the centre of town. It was a pleasure to visit The Bridge Project at AFC Sudbury recently to hear more about their plans for the centre once they take over and activities resume in the Autumn. When you put this alongside the splendid new gallery at Gainsborough’s House, it underlines how South Suffolk – including Constable country as well – has such a rich offer, with potential to strengthen our visitor pull and boost high street businesses. Whilst this is traditionally holiday season, I am well aware that some of the challenges that we’ve faced in recent months have proved stubborn, not least around the cost of living. As such, it’s important for me – as your Member of Parliament – to recognise all those who go above and beyond, in our communities, to make a difference. From helping out in vaccination centres, to sorting piles of donations to be sent to Ukraine, our cumulative community effort has been enormous. And it's for this exact reason that I’m announcing my 2023 'Community Champion’ nominations. From school governors to litter pickers, to parish councillors, to community speed watch, our society depends on volunteers who often go unappreciated. If you know someone who has made a real difference to your local area, please nominate them to become this year’s Community Champion at: www.jamescartlidge.com/communitychampion

Come and watch our free Soapbox Challenge!

It’s just a month to go until a host of soapboxes take to Mount Road in Bury St Edmunds so make sure you put this fantastic community event in your diary.

Saturday 2nd September will see teams from companies, clubs and organisations, colleagues and friends take the stage to dance for the audience before taking off down the ramp and down the hill to see who can race the winning time. Points are also awarded for the best soapbox, best presentation, and the best fundraiser so it’s a day full of competition as our soapboxers are all keen to lift a trophy. Here’s all you need to know about the day.

Start time

11am - The Soapbox Parade will commence the start of the event from Soapbox City.

Soapbox City

Based in the grounds of the Priory School, each team will have a ‘parking lot’. You will be able to see the soapboxes up close and personal. There are also additional stalls plus food and drink here. You will also find first aid facilities and toilets.

Parking

We encourage spectators to park at Ram Meadow carpark which is a 10 minute walk away. Please do not park on the residential roads. If you need disabled access, please contact the charity before the day on 01284 713466 or by emailing fundraising@wsh.nhs.uk.

Spectating

It is free to watch our soapbox event, but we will have volunteers selling flags, programmes and collecting donations on the day. All money raised will allow us to enhance the care that patients received across the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust.

Finally

Huge thanks go to our main sponsor Treatt plus to our other sponsors, Sealey Tools, Clarkes of Walsham, GT Cleaning Machines, AC Webb, Knights Lowe, Bury Town Council, HALO and, of course, the Priory School. We couldn’t host this event without you.

To watch a video from 2022 or for more details go www. mywishcharity.co.uk/event/soapbox-2023.

Ken’s SESAW News

Hello, Ollie here to give you a cat’s eye view of SESAW. I have been under house arrest, recovering from an injury and Ken is delighted I'm allowed out again. He’s fed up with competing for the best chair in the kitchen!

Thank you to everyone who visited our stall and had a go at our tombola at the Cornard Fete on 1st July. Sue was delighted with the amount she sold, Jeanette raised over £570 and ran out of prizes! Sadly they were all too busy to take a photo.

Please watch out for nesting hedgehogs when working in the garden. Don’t disturb them but it you see babies or older hogs in daylight do not leave them to get fly strike. If it seems the parent is not caring for the hoglets, bring them to us or your nearest hedgehog rescue. Mother already has several casualties which will be returned to their original site when healthy again.

Apart from many cats and dogs, we still have an abundance of rabbits looking for homes. Our rabbit expert, Karen, would be pleased to assist potential owners to choose the right rabbit for their family or help bond a new partner for their existing rabbit. Karen is usually available on Tuesdays and Saturdays but please phone ahead to confirm.

That’s enough from me, I’m off to find the most comfortable cushion for a cat nap. That pesky chihuahua doesn’t realise it’s the right of every cat, including me Ollie (the Black) Cat. Council leader seeks Government clarity on solar farms

The leader of Mid Suffolk District Council has called on the Government to provide a clear national framework for the development of solar farms.

Cllr Andy Mellen said it was essential to help all local authorities find the right balance between delivering renewable energy, food production and protecting the countryside. Speaking at the Local Government Association Conference in Bournemouth, he spoke of the difficulties councils and communities faced - particularly around large-scale solar farm applications.

Cllr Mellen said: “What we are currently lacking is a coherent national policy, a strategic joined up plan for energy development and food production. We cannot piece this together at the local level. When we do make decisions that are acceptable to our communities, it can cost us money when we subsequently lose an appeal.”

Cllr Mellen outlined how some people were concerned about loss of farmland, impact on landscapes and loss of biodiversity due to solar energy developments. He said: “As a Green-led council we do want to see renewable local energy production, but what's the right amount? And what, perhaps more importantly, is the amount that our communities will accept? The National Policy Planning Framework guides our planning decisions, but currently does not adequately protect the best and most versatile farmland. Energy production is clearly a national priority, food production is also a national priority. We're not Nimbys, we want to take the right decisions for the planet and for people, but we need the national policy framework in which to make them.” Cllr Mellen said the issue would be raised with the government and Mid Suffolk’s MPs.

Rotary Club of Sudbury

There was a surprise in store at the presidential handover event on 3 July, when the Secretary of Sudbury Rotary Club, David Taylor, was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship award in recognition of his many years of service to Rotary, most significantly his work in organising Crucial Crew, as well as managing the Club's web site and ensuring it complies with Rotary rules and general legislation - and the list goes on! After the presentation, members and their guests enjoyed Pimms and a picnic in the garden of the new President, Tony Platt.

In the last few weeks of the summer term, Sudbury Rotary sponsored a treat for children from the Specialist Support Unit at St Gregory School by funding a visit to Cineworld in Haverhill for a special showing of "Lyle, Lyle Crocodile"- a story about a singing crocodile. The children thoroughly enjoyed their trip and several wrote 'thank you' letters with drawings of the crocodile.

Seeking to promote the Club, new members Dorothy and Emily set up a stall at Party in the Park in Sudbury on 16 July, issuing a number of questionnaires inviting views on local needs, and hoped to engender interest in setting up a satellite club in Sudbury. The intention is that this linked Rotary club would meet less formally and undertake projects which it identified as meeting local, national or international need. For more details contact Emily at emilygriggs@bwblegal.com.

Another new member was welcomed at the Club's meeting on 17 July. Mike Birch (a Civil Engineer by profession) was a member for 35 years of the Abingdon Vesper Club, but has recently moved to Nayland and was keen to continue his involvement with Rotary.

Guest speaker on 7 August will be Rachael from Sudbury Library, and on 14 August Andy and Janet Welsh will recount their amazing adventure, walking 192 miles coast to coast in May this year.

Sudbury Rotary meets on the first three Mondays of each month from 12 noon until around 2 p.m. at Newton Green Golf Club, and has a fellowship day on the fourth Monday. We would be delighted to meet you so why not come along, meet some Rotarians and find out more. Rotary welcomes men and women from all backgrounds, and undertakes numerous projects across the local community and further afield which will benefit others in need. Lunch is optional, but our meetings give an opportunity for us to hear from speakers on topics of interest, follow up on matters concerned with our activities, and to enjoy each other’s company. Please David Taylor (07341 290415) know if you plan to visit us, so that we can advise the restaurant on numbers.

Growing Together

I bought a pram for £400 online, but it never arrived. At checkout it said delivery would take 3-5 working days, but I never received any tracking information. I chased the seller and they said they’d speak to the delivery company, but now when I try to phone them my call goes straight to voicemail. I’ve had no response to emails either. The website I bought it through looked legitimate but now I’ve seen people posting on review sites about products that never arrived, and some are saying this is a bogus seller. Have I been scammed and if so, what can I do?

This sounds like a very frustrating situation, and unfortunately scammers are always finding more sophisticated ways to trick shoppers, including having very legitimate-looking websites.

From your letter, there are signs it could be a scam. We’ve detailed information on our website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk about how to spot the signs of a scam that you might find useful to check.

As you’ve already parted with your money, the first step is to contact your bank immediately to let them know you think you’ve been scammed. In terms of getting your money back, a lot depends on how you paid. We have full details on our website on the routes you can take. For example, if you paid by debit card, your card provider can ask the seller’s bank to refund the money. This is known as the ‘chargeback scheme’. If you paid by credit card and the item cost more than £100 but less than £30,000 you might be able to claim under the Consumer Credit Act. This is known as a ‘Section 75 claim’. Under £100 on credit card, you can’t use Section 75, but you can use chargeback.

It’s always a good idea to report a scam, even if you haven’t got your money back yet. You can do this by contacting Action Fraud, https://www. actionfraud.police.uk/

It’s also worth knowing your rights as a consumer in case the seller does get back in contact and turns out not to be a scammer. If something you ordered hasn’t arrived, it’s the seller’s responsibility to get the item to you. So, if they say they don’t know where the pram is, you can ask for a redelivery or, depending on how long you’ve waited for a delivery, you may be able to get a refund from the seller. We have advice on our website about how to do this.

It’s also worth knowing that if a trader, having taken your money, refuses to deliver an item, Trading Standards may be able to investigate them. For more advice on dealing with suspected scams or problems with traders, call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline 0808 223 1133 or talk to an adviser online through the Citizens Advice website. Many people may need emotional support after falling victim to a scam, and we have advice on our website about how to get this too.

Citizens Advice runs Scams Awareness campaigns aiming to give people skills to identify scams; encourage people to share their experiences with scams; help people gain the confidence to report scams. The campaign is led by Citizens Advice in collaboration with the Consumer Protection Partnership (CPP).

For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www. citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/ contact

Facts and Figures

Having lost my sense of smell through Covid, and appreciating how it affected my appetite I decided to delve into some information and facts. Scent works in the opposite direction to our other senses sight, sound and taste. Through scent we identify the information first and then react emotionally once we identify the link with our memory. Each person has their own scent as with our fingerprints except for identical twins. Maybe this could be used as a security measure in the future? Sense identifying cash machines instead of pin numbers. There are some amazing facts about the wonders of scents and our noses starting with the animal kingdom.

A male Gypsy moth can detect the smell of a willing female who wishes to mate from a distance of seven miles.

Blood Hounds, Alsations, and German Shepherd dogs have 220 million sense cells in their noses, Dachshunds have 125 million, in comparison to the mere 5 million in a human's nose.

Women have a stronger sense of smell than men. From scientific results we are told that Mars smells like rotten eggs. The most popular smell is Vanilla , closely followed by Frankincense , Cardamon and Saffron. Cats hate the smell of Rosemary, thyme and mustard. I asked some friends about their favourite or most disliked smells. Some of us of a certain age can remember the strong smell of hot tar from the days when they mended the roads using tar that was well pressed down by a steamroller. The smell of seaweed, hotdogs, fish and chips, candy floss all bring back memories of going to the seaside. Vick, Camphor and Eucalyptus, being rubbed on your chest when you had a cough or cold. I still really hate the smell of pine disinfectant because it reminds me of Nursery School in Watford. I have always been allergic to dairy, unfortunately my mother didn't inform them of this, so was forced to drink milk at the breaktime. The result was projectile vomiting, very angry teachers and a lot of pine disinfectant’s other strong memory is when on returning from working in a chemist as a teenager and trying out lots of perfumes, only to be told when I returned home by my stepfather that I smelt like a brothel. As a typical teenager my response was, " How do you know what a brothel smells like?". I received a rather large clip around the ear. What is your favourite or most disliked smells?
