Taste Of Sudbury Food & Drink Festival Returns 17 June 2023

Same great event and a great new venue

Following the great success of the Taste of Sudbury last year in its `out of town’ location at Long Melford, plans are already well in place to ensure 2023 is even better. With Melford Hall closed for outdoor events this year, the festival is delighted to be located in the grounds of Kentwell Hall, against the backdrop of the stunning Tudor mansion, this is the perfect location for all the wonderful tastes and smells at this one-day festival.

`Supporting local producers and celebrating local food and drink has been the core focus and theme of the festival for several years. It is so important, and indicative of the success of the festival, that we have several local businesses that support the festival and that we have enormous numbers of visitors who enjoy the festival each year. Coming to Kentwell Hall is somewhat serendipitous as

I believe Kentwell Hall was the venue for one of the first farmers markets in the area over 20 years ago – it all makes perfect sense to come here’ states Justine Paul, part of the team that runs the festival. Likewise, Kentwell Hall commented; `Judith and Patrick Phillips are delighted to welcome the Taste of Sudbury festival to Tourney Park at Kentwell Hall. A worthy and valued local event in a lovely Kentwell setting. We are very excited.’

Eating and drinking on the day – the Taste of Sudbury always ensure visitors have a great welcome and plenty of local street food and drinks to keep everyone happy

Plan for the future, protect your interests and preserve your wealth

Moving home in 2023? What’s the risk of your transaction falling-through?

Property Life Interest Trust Wills are becoming increasingly popular among couples due to the desire to preserve family assets for younger generations. But many are not familiar with these types of Wills or realise their benefit until speaking with a solicitor.

It is probably more likely than you think but your choice of conveyancer can make all the difference.

Give yourself the best chance of a successful completion on your home purchase or sale by working in partnership with Holmes & Hills Solicitors. Benefit from our successful completion rate that is 22% higher than the national average reported by Rightmove1.

What number of property transactions fall-through?

Rightmove report that, on average across the country, approximately 30% of property transactions fall-through 2. It is a much higher percentage than most buyers and sellers expect it to be.

Reduce the risk of your transaction falling-through

Property Life Interest Trust Wills can be of particular benefit to couples considering planning for future care and preservation of assets. Specialist advice on Property Life Interest Trust Wills can provide for both protecting the financial position and living arrangements of the surviving spouse, as well as protecting assets for future generations. For couples with children from a previous relationship, Property Life Interest Trust Wills can also prove an effective legal solution.

Those using Holmes & Hills Solicitors’ conveyancing services benefit from a 22% higher successful completion rate compared to the national average. This means your transaction has an increased chance of successfully completing when Holmes & Hills is advising and representing you in your property transaction.

Taking advice and making early decisions to plan effectively

It is often the case that a couple’s main asset is their family home, and many are conscious of this when considering planning their estate and inheritance for their loved ones. However, many couples can limit their ability to effectively plan and preserve their estate, or limit their available options for this, if planning their estate is left too late.

Why do property transactions fall-through?

This is certainly the case in respect of how their home will be treated upon death. The earlier advice is sought, the better in this regard.

How your property is owned is important

Your transaction might fall-through for a number of reasons, including your buyer finding another property; a surveyor identifying issues with the property; or a buyer’s solicitor identifying issues surrounding matters such as rights of way, covenants, lease terms, easements, overage, options or boundary issues.

Why is Holmes & Hills’ successful completion rate 22% higher?

Holmes & Hills has a large team of 22 property lawyers dealing with second-hand, new-build and shared ownership property across the country. The size of the team means there is unlikely to be an issue the team hasn’t seen and resolved before.

Property can be held jointly in one of two ways. Property held as “Joint Tenants” will pass automatically to the surviving owner under survivorship rules whereas, property held as “Tenants in Common” will pass under the terms of a Will. For couples to effectively plan their estate, it is often necessary for their main residence to be owned as Tenants in Common, providing each with a % share ownership which can be directed into a Trust upon death.

What is a Property Life Interest Trust Will and what does it do?

Proactively identifying and resolving problems means we can keep your transaction on course, reducing the risk of your property transaction falling through and securing you a successful completion.

Benefit from fixed fee packages

As well as an increased chance of your transaction successfully completing, Holmes & Hills provides fixed-fee residential conveyancing quotes with no hidden charges. When you obtain conveyancing quotations from other law firms you may find charges for completing Stamp Duty Land Tax forms, dealing with lenders and leasehold fees. With Holmes & Hills, these items are included within our legal fee. We give you a simple, transparent, fixedfee quotation.

A solicitor is able to re-organise a couple's ownership of a property alongside preparing a Will for you, so as to ring fence each individual's property share in a Trust for future generations and identified beneficiaries. The surviving spouse/partner is protected by having a lifetime right of residence in the property and can be one of the trustees (managers) of the Trust. Therefore, the gift of your respective share in your principal residence at death is made to your trustees on trust and is subject to the surviving spouse/partner's right to live in the property for their lifetime. The Trust can be flexible in that the surviving spouse/partner will be able to move to another property using all or part of the value of the property.

Partner with Holmes & Hills to secure your transaction

Any surplus capital not used in the purchase of a new property can be invested and the income can be paid to the surviving spouse/partner for their lifetime. The surviving spouse or partner can decide to make gifts to the family if they do not need the surplus capital or income. Property Life Interest Trust Wills are very flexible, with the surviving spouse/partner even able to rent out the property and receive the rental income.

By working in partnership with our clients, local estate agents, mortgage brokers, and financial advisors, Holmes & Hills’ residential property lawyers will ensure a smooth transaction, whilst protecting your legal interests. Call Holmes & Hills Solicitors on 01787 275275 and ask to speak to Paige Hornabrook or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk.

1 Holmes & Hills’ successful completion rate is calculated using sample data for 526 residential property transactions started between July 2022 to September 2022 and is compared to the national average successful completion rate of 70.3% (provided by Rightmove, 13/02/2023). 2 Rightmove data supplied on 13/02/2023.

These types of Wills and arrangements can often be recommended where couples (married or unmarried) wish to plan for future care and preservation of assets for future generations and/or provide for children from a previous relationship, whilst at the same time providing security and peace of mind to the surviving spouse/partner.

Writing from the Rectory

Speak to an expert from Holmes & Hills Solicitors

It is always a good idea to take advice when thinking about planning for the future, planning your estate and planning for care. When considering whether Life Interest Trust Wills are appropriate for your circumstances and wishes, your solicitor will also consider your Inheritance Tax position. As mentioned, it is advisable to seek advice sooner rather than later to ensure all legal solutions and options remain available to you.

For expert advice on planning for the future, contact Holmes & Hills on 01787 275275 or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk and speak with one of our specialists from your local Holmes & Hills office.

As this edition lands on your doorstep your local church will be preparing for Holy Week, in my mind the most significant week in the church calendar. On Palm Sunday, 2nd April, we will be remembering how Jesus was welcomed into Nazareth and hailed as a King – he was the saviour sent to overcome the Roman Empire… or so they thought. Things quickly turned sour; Jesus was betrayed by one of his friends after the Last Supper, remembered on Maundy Thursday, and then sentenced to death on the cross – marked on Good Friday. Most folk thought that was the end, but it was all part of God’s great plan to save us from our wrongdoing and grant us eternal life – should we accept.

It would be easy to assume that Christmas must be the height of the Christian calendar, with all the festivities, food and gifts. However, we needed Christmas in order to have Easter – it is on Easter Day that we celebrate the fulfilment of the mission that God came to earth at Christmas to take on.

There is a wonderful YouTube clip of a three-year-old Scottish girl discussing Easter with her father. ‘Are the Easter Bunny and Jesus best pals?’ ’You know what I really don’t get – bunnies don’t even lay eggs’! Those symbols of Easter, reminding us of new life or resurrection, can be confusing but exploring their meaning and hunting for those hidden eggs also provide us with memories and childhood pointers to the Easter story. For me, I will look back with fondness, presently enjoy the festivities with my own children, but I will also gaze in wonder at the folded grave clothes and the empty cross.

Do join us to celebrate this extraordinary time at your local church –there are services throughout the week (the list appears in this edition) culminating with our Easter Day service at 10am. We would be delighted to welcome you! Blessings, Revd Andrew Doarks

The first two meetings of 2023 were well attended by our members and visitors. Our traditional Members Night in February saw three of members share not only their research into historical events, but for added interest brought their family history into the mix. Henry Ruse started the evening with an hour-by-hour and blow-by-blow account of the Long Melford Riot of 1st April 1885, and how his great-great-grandfather was there and suffered £6 of damage to his property, a huge amount in those days.

Ian Sandham, through photos and tales, gave us a boys own real life thrilling adventure of how his Uncle Jack, as a flight engineer in his Halifax Bomber, was shot down in Holland in 1943. On the run from the enemy, and with the support of the resistance, he escaped through Spain and eventually reached home. Ian’s accompanying photographs, featuring the families and resistance who helped him were very poignant as not all survived. To finish the evening Anne Grimshaw unearthed the origins of the Cooperative movement with the Rochdale Pioneers in 1844, and her great-great-grandfather’s part in those early days, and seamlessly linked the story to the support given locally by our local Coop.

Our speaker in March was Capt. Karl Lumbers, who spoke about Trinity House, the organisation that is responsible for lighthouses, buoys and beacons along the coasts of England & Wales. Trinity House was granted a Royal Charter in 1514 by Henry VIII, when it became clear that without any maps/charts, the countries waterways could be dangerous places and needed regulation and a body to conduct ships using them. We learnt of their very first light house, based at Lowestoft, that charged 4p to every ship that passed, using this income to cover the cost of the candles for the light. The history of Trinity House was fascinating and he brought us up to the present day, where they now have 65 lighthouses, 9 lightvessels, 33 beacons, 450 buoys and a few other electrical thingamajigs under their control.

The Society’s next meeting is on the 20th April at the Old School Community Centre Long Melford CO10 9DX. The evening starts at 7:30pm with our AGM, followed by a talk on The Development of the Timber-Framed Building at Little Hall Lavenham and its Restoration. Visitors (£3 admission) are always welcome and if any further information is required, please call 01787 375329.

Future of Belle Vue House in Sudbury is Secured

The future of Belle Vue House in Sudbury looks secure following a decision by Babergh District Council’s cabinet to agree a sale.

The house was brought back onto the market in January with developers interested in the retention and regeneration of the property invited to submit a bid on an informal basis.

All bids were considered by Babergh District Council with the preferred bid being presented to cabinet for the final decision.

Belle Vue House became available after a previous planning application, which also included land adjacent to the house (the old swimming pool site) was rejected in Autumn 2022.

Cllr John Ward, Leader and Cabinet Member for economic growth, Babergh District Council said: “After a series of delays, I’m pleased that we have been able to make progress and secure the future and the restoration of Belle Vue House.”

Plans for the remaining land including the former swimming pool site, which had been proposed for development for a new, accessible park entrance, will be considered in due course.

Commenting on plans for the development of a new park entrance Cllr Ward said: “Babergh District Council is committed to improving Belle Vue Park with a focus on accessibility and better connectivity to the town for the benefit of all.”

For more information about the regeneration of Belle Vue Park, please visit Sudbury Vision Overview through midsuffolk.gov.uk

As always the Taste of Sudbury celebrates local producers so there will plenty of artisan stalls including chilli jams, ice cream from Hadleys, charcuterie, sauces and ketchups, homemade pies, regional cheeses, fresh Venison, pasties, vegan pastries, dog treats, herbal plants and great local craft stalls selling artisan kitchen and outdoor knives, upcyled wooden crafts, handmade ceramics and hand block print accessories and paper, handmade cushions, candles and wax melts, hand designed homeware.

I’ve been offered and accepted a new job. The new company wants me to start as soon as possible but we’re really shortstaffed where I am now, and I don’t know how soon I’ll be allowed to leave. How should I bring all this up with my boss?

Joining us at the festival, as always, will be local chefs, bakers and butchers we all want to celebrate and enjoy and they will show off their skills on the kitchen demonstration stage. It’s an excellent line up this year - Joining the host Jon Jackaman from Infusions Group on stage will be Will Wooster and his dad Simon, owner and head baker at Woosters Bakery gives us top tips for baking bread and sourdough at home.

Greg Strolenberg, owner, and Head Butcher at Lavenham Butchers gives us a masterclass in Muntjac butchery plus we have Martin Ingram, Head Chef from the Boxford White Hart who will create new dishes using local ingredients and more chefs will be announced in the coming weeks. The festival has always attracted all the family to attend and there is something for everyone this year. As well as all the street food and drinks (including those for kids) plus ice creams, we have also arranged for kids to get their hands dirty with free sessions with Kiln Cottage Pottery – there will be clay activities all day in their gazebo.

Music will be provided by our resident DJ Bedford 45 who will be playing a selection of sounds throughout the day.

So make a day of it, bring the family, dogs and your favourite picnic rug and enjoy your day at the Taste of Sudbury…

Congratulations on your new role! It can feel awkward telling your employer you’re moving on but there are set processes in place. The time between telling your employer you’ve found a new position and you actually leaving is known as your notice period. If you’ve been in your current job for less than one month, you won’t have to give any notice period (unless your contract says otherwise). If it’s more than a month though, you have to give at least one week’s notice. Check what your contract says to find out how much notice you’ll be expected to give. If you don’t have a contract, and your employer has no written record of you agreeing to a notice period, but you have been employed for more than a month you have to give at least one week’s notice. Although it may be tempting to hand in your resignation as soon as possible, it’s worth waiting until your new employer has confirmed your new employment, for example by signing your contract or by giving you a start date. It’s then best to give your resignation in writing (email is fine), so that you have a record of the date you told your employer. You can find guidance on how to do this on the Citizens Advice website, visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk where we have a page on handing in your notice. Fixed-term contracts are a bit different, as you won’t need to give notice if you intend to leave on the last day of your contract. Leaving before the end of a fixed-term contract usually means giving at least one week’s notice, but again check your contract to see if this is different.

Don’t forget about your holiday days during your notice period. If you have any unused annual leave, speak to your employer about either taking these during the notice period or being paid back for them in your final pay cheque. Finally, sometimes people can change their mind about moving jobs or find their circumstances alter. If this happens to you, you should speak to your current employer to see what your options are and if you can stay in your current role.

The garden is full of birdsong heralding the arrival of Spring but it’s so cold at the time of writing! Poor old Ollie (the Black Cat) is tantalised by the nesting birds he can only watch from the window as he recovers from a little accident. He has enjoyed being pampered, but he’s getting restless now.

Everyone’s situation is different, but if you face any challenges with an existing or potential employer, contact Citizens Advice for advice: 0800 144 8848 or visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk to find out about what to do when you’re leaving a job.

The improvements outside are coming along nicely, thanks to our willing volunteers and a work party from the Colchester based branch of Informa. The team braved miserable weather to spruce up the site and were still smiling at the end of the day. A big thank you to all of them, please come back soon!

Thanks are also due to Pets At Home in Colchester for choosing SESAW as the store’s official charity for 2023. We look forward to meeting customers in store during the year.

Now that’s something you don’t see ever y day Maisie, the spr inger and I were meeting the lovely people at Lush Cosmetics in Ipswich because they were donating profits from their Char ity Pot cream to SESAW Suddenly we saw a human striding through the precinct with a tall contraption strapping to his back Apparently it was the Google Ear th guy, mapping the precinct with a 360 camera And I thought he was there just to photograph me! Mind you, Maisie and I were soon the centre of attention again but I really didn’t know where to look when she rolled on her back for tummy tickles That dog is SO embarrassing!

I should explain about Maisie She arr ived at SESAW one Chr istmas, in great pain, hardly able to walk Luckily our talented vet was able to correct a bir th defect on her legs She patiently endured a long recover y per iod, remaining calm as her dressings were changed and licking ever yone who cared for her Two years later our Spaniel enjoys life, goes for shor t walks and loves nothing better than a squeaky toy

Although we are currently ‘hibernating’ to facilitate site improvements, emergency admissions have continued as circumstances force people to part with their family pets. If you are in a more fortunate position and looking for a new four-legged companion, please check our website or drop us an email with your details. We have many cats and dogs including Boots, a Chihuahua Terrier cross. She’s very loving and needy, having been through a lot in her life and needs a special diet to keep her fit and well. She’s a real cutie, ready to walk into your home and be the one and only your heart desires.

I hope the weather has warmed up by the time you read this from me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

More attractions for history centre

New windows into Sudbury’s history have been opened at the Heritage Centre in the Town Hall which is one of the community warm spaces open free to all comers. A gown made from elaborate jacquard silk woven in Sudbury is the centre piece of a new display by Stephen Walters and Son. Their silk mill in Cornard Road has its roots in Spitalfields of the early 1700s and is still run by the same family. Once there were more than a dozen silk weaving businesses in the town but only three remain since Vanners went out of business.

The other new exhibit is a WW2 radio transmitter that played its part in Britain’s defence force against the might of German Luftwaffe bombers. Sudbury civilian volunteers used it to report first sightings of German bombers intent on raiding our cities and vital installations. These Royal Observer Corps volunteers scanned the sky in all weathers for 24 hours a day from their post at the highest point on Constitutional Hill. By identifying type of aircraft, strength of the attack force and its heading, they enabled earlier air raid warnings for civilians as well as for the RAF and rest of our Home Defence force. The radio transmitter was discarded after the Observer Corps was disbanded but recently discovered by Phyllis Felton, a trustee of Sudbury Museum Trust that runs the Heritage Centre. It is now part of the WW2 Home Front exhibition, together with the story of the men who scanned the skies. Access is free to the Heritage Centre – the entrance is in Gaol Lane. Apart from the displays, visitors can pick from a wealth of local history stories to view on a large screen. The adjoining Tourist Information office provides free tea and coffee. The warm space area is open every day, except Sunday, from 10am to 4.30pm (Friday 4pm) and on Saturday 10am to 1pm.

Your Independent Candidate for Sudbury South East

We have lived in Sudbury East for 22 years. Our faces will probably be known to you as we undertake regular litter picks, chat with you when walking your dog or simply out for a stroll, collecting for the RNLI, the Poppy Appeal and Marie Curie as well as attending fund-raising events. This enables us to keep in touch with and understand your concerns about local issues such as access to public transport, litter and fly tipping, anti-social behaviour, affordable housing and many more.

A few months ago, we made the decision to leave the Babergh Conservative Group and represent our residents as Independents. This decision was made after a great deal of soul searching but we felt that owing to the disruptive behaviour of the Conservative Group we could no longer remain. This now enables us to vote for what is right rather than being told how to vote.

News from The Christopher Centre

Welcome from Kathy and Linda, Centre Coordinators.

What another busy month we’ve had here so far at The Christopher Centre! So many new faces through the doors enjoying the groups and activities on offer.

For those of you who are wondering what we do here, The Christopher Centre is a thriving community hub where many local groups run their classes and activities. We offer a number of rooms available to hire. We also house a number of offices used by local voluntary and community organisations. Our room hire is available on an hourly basis, from £6 per hour.

We also promote our own community activities particularly for individuals experiencing menopause, loneliness, isolation or mental health issues. We aim to continue bringing a friendly community approach to the people of Sudbury and surrounding areas, with some exciting new ventures and groups planned.

We are very busy taking room bookings for 2023; contact us if you would like to visit with a view to hosting your group or event with us. We have four incredible spaces to offer including the Commonlands Room that can comfortably house 30+ people and includes kitchen facilities, to the Suffolk Room which is ideal for one-to-one meetings.

Contact us via email: info@christophercentre.org.uk, telephone us on 01787 313914 or visit our website www.christophercentre.org.uk and follow the links to book online.

You can find us in Gainsborough Street opposite Gainsborough’s House. Why not come along one morning and say hello and have a look around? Thank you: to all our wonderful room hirers, group leaders, organisers, Trustees and friends of the Christopher Centre for their continued support and encouragement.

And as always, a HUGE thank you to our amazing volunteers who keep the Centre running smoothly, running our reception, keeping the outside Courtyard area clear and small maintenance jobs.

Volunteers: we are pleased to report we have had more interest in our volunteer positions but can never have enough, our volunteers are what keeps the Centre active!

We are always keen to welcome volunteers who have skills they could offer the Centre; gardening, odd jobs, decorating, reception cover. With Spring just around the corner, our little courtyard could do with sprucing up. We already have two volunteers who work very hard throughout the year making this area clean, tidy and presentable but as they say every little helps.

Please contact Kathy or Linda at info@christophercentre.org.uk or telephone 01787 313914 for a chat.

Just a reminder of some of our regular groups and events.

Menopause ‘Let Talk’ Our monthly group is proving popular, please keep your eye out for our April Speaker details. Our May Speaker (4th) is Tony Fisher, CEO of Fisher Jones Greenwood Solicitors discussing Menopause and your legal rights in the workplace.

Rotary Round-up

On 20 March, Sudbury Rotary Club was delighted to welcome the latest corporate member, Emily Griggs, who is one of the four representatives of local Solicitors Bates Wells and Braithwaite who take it in turns to attend Rotary meetings.

Emily will qualify as a Licensed Probate Practitioner and has already been involved in supporting the Rotary Club by helping at the Christmas Tree Festival and helping school leavers with their career development alongside other members from Bates Wells, taking part in mock interviews at most of the local secondary schools.

Moore Green is also a corporate member of Sudbury Rotary. If other local businesses are interested in becoming corporate members they are invited to contact the Secretary, David Taylor, on 07341 290415, or perhaps send a representative to join members at one of our lunch-time meetings at Newton Green Golf Club (do let us know by phoning David, so that we can advise the restaurant on numbers!). Check out more information about Sudbury Rotary at www.sudburyrotary.com.

Recent decisions to support local organisations with donations have included £50 for the Sudbury Community Depot and £200 to help with supplementing lunch time-time food for children at St Gregory Primary School in Sudbury. The Club will also donate £424 from the Youth and Environment Fund to support two schools, St Andrew’s (Bulmer) and St Giles (Maplestead) to visit the River Stour Trust in Cornard as part of its environmental education funding.

Our speaker on 3 April will be Rosy Morelli about her plans to take part in a Project Trust venture, as she is currently seeking sponsorship for this. Charter Night (the celebration of the Club’s ‘birthday’) will take place on 24 April at the Boat House restaurant with a two-course meal and musical entertainment.

Meantime, the Club is hoping to set up a satellite club, which will be linked to Sudbury Rotary, but meeting more informally and undertaking local projects to support our community.

Rotary is open to people from all backgrounds and we would welcome more of you to join us.

Why do YOU need Chiropractic Care?

Sudbury Rotary meets at Newton Green Golf Club on the first three Mondays of each month - with an optional lunch, gives an opportunity for us to hear from speakers on topics of interest, follow up on matters concerned with our activities, and to enjoy each other’s company. Please let the Secretary know if you would like to meet our members and see if you would like to join the Rotary Club (07341 290415).

Facts and Figures from the Past

As we come closer to the Coronation of King Charles III, I have delved into some of my books and found some amazing, quite weird and fascinating facts. I discovered that Augustus the Strong the elected King of Poland in 1697 was believed to have fathered more than 300 children. Nevertheless, when he died there wasn’t a problem in choosing his successor as only one of his children was legitimate. Unfortunately, that is all that is recorded, I wonder if he died in his sleep, or trying to sire yet another child?

The real King Macbeth of Scotland was quite different from the tragic hero of Shakespeare’s play. Far from being an ambitious usurper, as Shakespeare described him. Macbeth had a claim to the Scottish throne which was at least as good as his rival Duncan. He was not murdered by Macbeth, but was killed in open battle in 1040 in fact Duncan was a young ineffectual king, not the venerable and gracious sovereign depicted in the play. Macbeth actually reigned from 1040 to 1057.

After Charles I met his death in January 1649, his body was interred without ceremony in the vaults of St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, where it was undisturbed for nearly 200 years. This had not been the government’s or the royal family’s intention however at the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, Charles II was granted £70,000 by Parliament to pay for his father’s reburial beneath a monument in Westminster Abbey. Then, to general consternation it was announced that the body had mysteriously vanished. Such was the nation’s sympathy toward the bereaved king they decided to decline to ask for the money to be returned. That amount is roughly equivalent to £200 million today. Then 251 years later workmen discovered his remains when they accidentally broke into the tomb of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. The Royal Physician Sir Henry Halford was summoned and positively identified that the remains were those of the beheaded Charles I. The lid was then closed, and the king left to rest. A twist to this tale is that Sir Henry had a most unprofessional bent toward souvenir hunting, so he removed the severed vertebra from the King’s neck and had it set in gold. For the next half century Sir Henry and his descendants used it as a salt cellar. Eventually Queen Victoria was informed, and she ordered that it should be returned to the royal coffin.

When Britain’s future King George IV married Caroline of Brunswick in 1795 he had already been married to Maria Fitzherbert. Having a secret ceremony in 1785. Maria was Catholic and a widow, but although their marriage was valid in the Catholic Church it was not legal under English law. George and Caroline parted after a year from their wedding soon after Princess Charlotte was born. George returned to live with Mrs Fitzherbert, and Caroline spent the majority of her time in Italy. George was furious to find that Caroline was having an affair with her chamberlain Bartolomé Bergamo. Then in 1820 when George III died, having reigned for sixty years, Caroline returned to claim her right as queen, George was outraged and ordered her not to attend his coronation in Westminster Abbey in 1821. Caroline was determined to be there. On arrival, she was forcibly prevented from entering the building. Totally humiliated she became very ill and died one month after the coronation.

What a staggering, unbelievable game it was It had everything – cliffhanging drama, run-outs, and THAT over It was a real “where were you?” moment But enough about the 1st XI’s win over Worlington The World Cup Final was pretty good too the day after All day long a few hardy HCC souls watched the drama unfold on the big screen in the pavilion, with lots of juniors from two games at the ground that day popping in to watch from time to time Hopefully what they saw will inspire them to follow in the footsteps of Roy, Stokes, Buttler etc

It has been a much better month for the 1st XI, with three wins on the bounce against Maldon, Worlington and Wivenhoe This despite plenty of availability and injury issues Our overseas player Kudzai Maunze has scored two matchwinning centuries in those games – all the more remarkable since it has become apparent that he has been playing with a fractured thumb Dom Manthorpe has also been chipping in with valuable contributions with both bat

I watched the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II with my mother and grandparents on a very small television with a ten-inch screen. We were joined by great aunt Gertie who managed to consume a precious box of Smarties that I had been given. Sweets had been rationed up until February 6th, 1953. Meat, bacon, sugar, butter, cheese, margarine, cooking fat and eggs were still rationed until 1954 I was not impressed with this greedy aunt. My grandmother cheered me up by saying she had always loved chocolate and when they were at high school, Gertie had hidden some chocolates under her pillow, they melted down her body during the night, and so she was teased and nicknamed ‘Chocolate Knickers’ for years!

Fortunately, there will be an amazing variety of delicious meals to enjoy as we celebrate the coronation of King Charles III. So, whatever we choose to eat maybe coronation chicken or cucumber sandwiches, minus the crusts of course! It will be a tremendous day of celebration for everyone.

Gainsborough And The Legacy Of Landscape: Masterpieces From Woburn Abbey

Ends 11 June 2023

Make sure you can help your partner or a parent, should they need assistance

73% of people think IF a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. similarly, 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can't make them yourself*. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Should your spouse/partner or parent become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and neither a partner nor next of kin will be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. For example, this would mean being unable to deal with financial institutions in respect of accounts and pensions, the Department for Work and Pensions, or utility companies. Similarly, a next of kin will not be able to make decisions regarding the health and welfare of a spouse/partner, parent or other relative, including where and what care should be provided, as well as what end of life care should be received, if any.

What is needed to be able to help?

For the first time in their history, two great masterpieces by Thomas Gainsborough painted in 1755 are being exhibited at his childhood home in Suffolk. The two paintings were bought by John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford for £21 and 15 guineas, the price reflective of how early in Gainsborough’s career that they were purchased. They are the centrepiece of this exhibition, displayed alongside a series of earlier landscape masterpieces from the Woburn Abbey collection. Included are works of the great seventeenth Dutch and Flemish landscape paintings which had such a profound influence on Gainsborough. Works by Aelbert Cuyp (1620-91) and Paulus Potter (1625-54) are represented, together with a major classical landscape by seventeenth century French artist Claude Lorrain (1600-82), whose paintings inspired Gainsborough’s later landscapes.

To assist your spouse/partner, parent or other relative with affairs during their lifetime, or make certain decisions you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means they will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

Common reasons for needing to help

The exhibition not only displays works that inspired Gainsborough, but also the school of British landscape painting that Gainsborough was pivotal in influencing. Works by Frederick Richard Lee (1798-1879), Sir Augustus Wall Callcott (1779-1844), and Richard Parkes Bonington (180228) are shown alongside one of Sir Edwin Landseer’s (1802-1873) greatest landscape paintings, Deer in Coldbath Fields (c1835).

Often people need to assist with these matters because their spouse/partner, parent or relative has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident.

The accompanying catalogue has two essays which explore in turn the influence of Dutch landscapes on Gainsborough’s painting and the patronage of landscape painting by John, the 6th Duke of Bedford.

What happens if LPAs are not in place?

The exhibition arose from the major restoration project of Woburn Abbey which has allowed their treasures to travel. Drawn from the rich collection, the exhibition, conceived by the curators at Woburn Abbey, draws on the great passion for the landscape and landscape painting that has become an indelible part of the English psyche.

Matthew Hirst, Curator, Woburn Abbey said: ‘The opportunity to explore these subjects and bring together familiar masterpieces with a new lens, is made possible by the temporary closure of Woburn Abbey to enable a generational investment in its fabric and infrastructure and the subsequent redisplay of the collections.’

If you want to help your partner or parent with property, financial, health or welfare decisions and they do not have Powers of Attorney in place and were incapable of making them, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Until the Court authorises your application you are unable to deal with the persons money or property, and will be unable to make decisions regarding their health and welfare.

What are the two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney?

LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:

It is hugely fitting that the exhibition will take place at the recently redeveloped Gainsborough’s House, a National Centre for Thomas Gainsborough. From the new building the landscape that Gainsborough painted is visible and this exhibition and its exploration of landscape painting is an opportunity to see how Gainsborough was central to the landscape tradition.

• Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home).

• Health and Welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves. Discuss Powers of Attorney for yourself, a partner or parent

Mark Bills, Director of Gainsborough’s House said: ‘This is an important moment for Gainsborough’s House, to welcome one of the great landscape collections for exhibition. It is particularly significant for us because it has Gainsborough at its heart. I know that the wonderful connections that the exhibition makes, will open people’s eyes to landscapes and their depiction by some of the world’s greatest artists.

April Advice Column

I ordered a watch online with personalised engraving for my partner’s upcoming 40th birthday. The company has since gone out of business. I keep phoning and emailing them but can’t get through to anyone. I’m assuming they can’t fulfil my order, but I’d paid for the watch upfront and can’t afford to buy another gift until I get my money back, please help.

I understand the frustration you must be feeling - especially as you’ve already parted with your money and presumably spent time searching for a suitable gift for your partner’s special birthday. I assume you haven’t had a dispatch note yet, which suggests the order isn’t on its way.

If the company has gone into administration, it may still be able to fulfil outstanding orders, but if the company is already in liquidation, you’ll need to try to get your money back. If you’re unsure about what state the company is in, the Citizens Advice website has information on how to find out.

As the company hasn’t responded to your calls or emails, is there a shop or office you can visit or write to, to get an update on your order, or request a refund? If that isn’t possible, the next steps depend on whether it’s a limited company (it will have ltd or plc after its title) or if it’s a sole trader (someone who runs their own business) or partnership.

If it’s a limited company, you’ll need to get details of the administrator or receiver - the person dealing with settling the trader’s debts. The names of those administrators will usually be on the website of the company that’s gone bust. You should register your claim as a creditor on the GOV.UK website. Fill out the form with details of what you’re owed and send it to the administrator dealing with the trader’s debts.

Unfortunately, there’s only a small chance you’ll receive any money back because you’ll be last in a long list of creditors who need to be paid.

As the order was online (and I’m therefore assuming you paid by debit or with credit card) you could also try getting your money back with a Section 75 claim or a chargeback claim to your card provider or bank. Full details about both these types of claims can be found on the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk

If the seller was a sole trader or partnership and not a limited company, pursuing a Section 75 or chargeback claim is your best option. Every case is different when traders go under, but you can call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline to find out exactly what your rights are: telephone 0808 223 1133 and visit https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/ somethings-gone-wrong-with-a-purchase/if-a-company-stopstrading-or-goes-out-of-business/

For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www. citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact We are providing advice by telephone and email Monday – Thursday, 10am – 3pm.

Hadleigh Swimming Club Merger

After many years of running as two successful swimming clubs, Hadleigh Dolphins and Sudbury Storms have joined forces and are soon to become ‘Hadleigh & Sudbury Swimming Club’. The club trains at both the Hadleigh and Sudbury pools with various sessions across the week catering for swimmers from a broad range of ages and abilities. We are always happy to welcome new swimmers to the club, from both locations and the many villages in between. Due to the successful amalgamation and expansion of the clubs, we are looking for new coaches to work alongside our current coaching team, delivering high quality sessions to help further stretch our swimmers. If this is of interest, please contact the club (hadleighscinfo@ gmail.com).

Suffolk County Championships 2023

The start of a new calendar year always brings much excitement with the Suffolk County Championships, held at Crown Pools, Ipswich. Twelve swimmers achieved the qualifying times for a total of 65 races between them. In addition to this we were able to enter relay teams for both males and females across every age group.

The County Championships started with the long-distance races, held at UEA Norwich. Byron Miller represented the club, competing in the 800m Freestyle. A fantastic swim, achieving 2nd place, a new PB and bringing home the club’s first medal of the Counties.

The following weekend saw the club represented by several swimmers across a multitude of events. Alexandra, Byron, Chloe, Christopher, Emma, Emily, Georgia, Nell, Olivia, Sebastian and Sophie swam in a host of different races. Several swimmers competed in more than one race in each session, demonstrating their competitive nature and determination. Many of the swimmers swam PBs with some achieving Regional qualifying times. All swimmers finished in the top 10 for at least one of their events across the weekend.

The weekend saw medals for Sophie achieving silver in the 100m IM, silver in the 50m Freestyle, silver in the 200m IM, gold in the 50m Backstroke and gold in the 200m Backstroke. Byron achieved a silver in the 50m Butterfly. After a week of well-deserved rest, the swimmers were back in the pool ready to race again. The swimming club had another great weekend with swimmers making finals and achieving PBs, again with some making the Regional qualifying times. The weekend brought medals for Christopher with bronze in the 50m Freestyle. Sophie walked away with bronze in the 100m Freestyle, silver in the 50m Butterfly and bronze in the 200m Freestyle. Chloe finished with a bronze in the 50m Butterfly.

The final weekend of racing saw two Hadleigh swimmers compete in the 400m Freestyle. Both achieving excellent PB’s and qualifying for the regional Championship later this year, fantastic effort from Byron and Emily.

The County Championships finished in style with team relays. We were represented by a broad range of experienced swimmers and for some, their first experience of competitive swimming. All demonstrating great teamwork and determination. The female 10/11 team comprising of Alexandra, Evie, Olivia, Roseanna and Sophie came away with a gold in the Medley relay and a silver in the Freestyle relay. During the Suffolk Championships swimmers accrue points, which are awarded for times achieved, with the top five races counting for each swimmer. The club had four swimmers finish in the top ten in the county for their age. Sophie (11yrs) finished in third place , Chloe (14 yrs) finished in tenth, Emily (16 yrs) finished in seventh place and Byron (12 yrs) finished in fifth. All swimmers should be exceptionally proud of themselves for what they have achieved individually and as a team over the last four weekends. As a club we now turn the focus back to training ready for the next galas in April.

Owing to too many putting their names down to join us, only to change their mind and cancel when it came time to pay up, the coach suppliers have given us a new rule. Everyone has to fill in a simple sheet (which can be delivered on request), including passenger name, signature and destination and to include full payment for day trips, and at least £50 deposit for holidays. This has come hard to me, when I trusted people to pay up for so many years without any problem. However I hope it will not stop you from still joining us.

At last we have got the details for the Autumn 5 day holiday, using one of the suggestions given to us, BLACKPOOL . To be there when the decorations are all up. The dates are 2nd to 6th Oct.

Now that’s something you don’t see ever y day Maisie, the spr inger and I were meeting the lovely people at Lush Cosmetics in Ipswich because they were donating profits from their Char ity Pot cream to SESAW Suddenly we saw a human striding through the precinct with a tall contraption strapping to his back Apparently it was the Google Ear th guy, mapping the precinct with a 360 ̊ camera And I thought he was there just to photograph me!

PROJECT UPDATE

Work is progressing really well on site and we’re delighted to now include a heating upgrade to the building. We’re sure that this will be well received by many of you. We want to be as eco-friendly as possible and we are replacing the old system with two new hydrogen ready boilers (this provides a back up boiler should the primary one fail), new pipework, and we are replacing the old wall mounted blower units with beautiful reconditioned cast iron radiators. This form of heating is much more efficient and will better suit the site’s more regular pattern of use in the future, helping to reduce St Peter’s carbon footprint (and bills) too!

The extensive work to the roof is nearing completion so you will soon start to see the external scaffolding starting to come down. The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed that the window on the south side that was boarded up for a couple of years has been refurbished and returned to the building so the ugly boarding has disappeared.

We offer a reliable collection and delivery service that picks up and returns your cleaned and pressed garments hassle-free, and may even be able to pick up, wash and deliver within 24 hours.*

You will also start to see some external work in the churchyard taking place. With huge thanks to a generous legacy fund held by Sudbury Town Council we are able to include work to provide seating in the churchyard and new DDA compliant access gate and footpath. You will see some of the intrusive common shrubs removed to open up the views and to give access for some essential tomb repairs. This will all enable visitors to the cafe to safely enjoy the outdoor space during warmer weather, and provides space for outdoor activities, alongside new volunteering opportunities to help create a nature friendly space for birds, bees and butterflies.

We have been working with our local schools on some wonderful interpretation pieces for St Peter’s that you will be able to experience when we are open.

PROUDLY SERVING HADLEIGH, SUFFOLK and beyond

We service many towns and villages in Suffolk and North Essex including Ipswich, Colchester, Sudbury, and Stowmarket.

If you live outside this area and are considering our services, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Kinetika have been commissioned to produce four hand-painted silk banners which will be hung in the building. They have been working with some very creative students from Thomas Gainsborough School who have designed the banners to reflect four themes around rites of passage. The students were able to visit Kintetika’s studios to see their designs transferred to the silk and experience the painting process. Kinetika even arranged a visit to the Royal Opera House Production Workshops to meet some of the craftspeople that make costumes and sets for ROH productions. We can’t wait to see the silks in place but there’s a little teaser above.

Kate Valentine from Digital Drama has been working with some very talented students from Ormiston Sudbury Academy who have been busy scripting and recording voiceovers for a digital Mouse Trail to feature in St Peter’s when it reopens. The trail will include information and snippets of historic gossip, based on various people and features in the building! The Mackman Group design team are busy creating the digital map for us and shared an early mouse design with us as you can see above. The mice on the map will correlate with hand-made Sudbury silk mice positioned around the building for you to find!

Simon Keep from Holkham Sound is creating an immersive soundscape based on a historic sermon written for St Peter’s and delivered in 1858 by Rev John Keble “being the commemoration of the free opening and restoration of the church”. It has been updated to reflect contemporary attitudes to inclusivity and diversity and Simon will be including voices from the local community in this piece of work. Please get in touch with us if you are interested in taking part.

All are welcome!
