Hospice shop wants your toys! Hit kids movie Toy Story 3 has inspired a Hadleigh charity shop to launch a campaign to get abandoned playthings donated and given a new lease of life. St Elizabeth Hospice’s shop in Maiden Way, Hadleigh, is staging a Toy Amnesty throughout October to get parents, kids, pre-schools and playgroups to hand in the toys children have outgrown. Donations will be sold in a special toy section of the shop from October half term, to raise money for the charity. Jason Rudderham, the Hospice’s retail sales manager, said: “We are asking people dig out any unused good quality toys and donate them to us. We will put them on sale in our shops and hope they will get a new lease of life with whoever buys them. As the Christmas present buying season approaches we will be selling the toys.” Donations of broken or incomplete toys cannot be accepted. All proceeds will go towards funding services at St Elizabeth Hospice, an independent charity which costs £6.6 million a year - or £13 a minute - to run. The Hospice, based in Foxhall Road, Ipswich, improves the quality of life for people in East Suffolk who have an illness from which they will not recover.

Influenza (flu) is caused by a highly infectious virus that occurs in 3 strains - A, B and C and within these strains the virus is constantly changing so that each year the virus is slightly different and its severity is unpredictable. Flu symptoms can hit you suddenly and include headache, fever, chills, sore throat, aching joints and cough. Flu is highly infectious and is transmitted through sneezing (a sneeze can reach 100 miles per hour), coughing and handling objects contaminated with the virus such as door knobs, telephones etc.). The virus can remain infectious for about 2 hours on such surfaces. So, avoiding flu can be difficult, especially if you travel on crowded buses and trains or if you work in an office or factory environment. Vaccination is the best prevention against the virus giving between 70-90% protection against flu. If after the vaccination you unfortunate enough to get flu the symptoms will be much milder. The vaccine used is safe and effective and it protects against the viral strains advised by the World Health Organisation as being the most likely to attack the UK this current year. Of course, the vaccine is not suitable for everyone. If you have any doubts just come and speak to our pharmacists or speak to you GP and they will be able to advise you. It is generally recommended that AT RISK groups have the flu vaccination as they are more likely to suffer complications if they get flu. You are in AT RISK group if you are: • Over 65 years of age • Have respiratory disease – COPD, Emphysema, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, possibly asthma • Have heart disease – angina, heart failure, previous heart attack • Have kidney disease – chronic renal failure, undergoing dialysis, previous kidney transplant • Have liver disease – Cirrhosis, Biliary atresia, chronic hepatitis • Have diabetes • Have had strokes or transient ischaemic attacks • Have a weak immune system – no spleen, HIV, Cancer, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, taking high dose steroids. So how do you go about getting a flu vaccination? For patients registered with the Hadleigh and Boxford Surgeries ONLY and who are in the AT-RISK GROUPS – no appointment is necessary to attend the following flu sessions. The surgery will be holding FLU SESSIONS at: Hadleigh High School Leisure Centre in the Sports Barn on Saturday 9th October 9am - 12noon Saturday 6th November 9am - 12 noon The community minibus will be collecting people every half hour (starting 8.30am) from Magdalen Road (bus stop) up to the High School. Flu sessions will also be held at Boxford Village Hall on Tuesday 16th November 9am - 12 noon and 2 pm-4 pm There will be no community bus for Boxford For patients who are not in the AT RISK group but would still like a flu jab You can attend one of the above sessions and ask for a private flu vaccination to be administered to you at that time. The cost to you will be £20 per vaccination. Remember though, that at these sessions the AT RISK groups will have priority over you. In addition Mill Pharmacy can arrange to have you privately vaccinated against Flu. Please phone or visit the pharmacy to arrange an appointment. Again, the cost of a private flu vaccination is £20. However, bearing in mind 150 million working days are lost to flu each year in the UK your employer may wish to arrange a group vaccination for their employees. If the private flu vaccination is arranged through your employer we may be able to offer a scale of charges depending on numbers. Please ask your employer to contact Mr Peter Larner on 01473 820124 for more information and a free quotation.

The search is on for Babergh’s Community Heroes Babergh District Council is looking for young people, individuals, voluntary groups and businesses that make communities special as it launch its 19th annual awards scheme. The Community Achievement Awards aims to honour those individuals and groups who make a real difference in their community and help to build a better place in which to live and work. Nomination forms are winging their way to schools, parish and town councils, businesses, voluntary groups and charities and Babergh is urging anyone who knows someone who may be eligible to grab a form and nominate! This year’s award categories are: outstanding contribution made by a young person or group of young people 18 years or under; selfless service by an individual (over 18) to a voluntary body or to the community; voluntary or community group that improves the quality of life for residents in our district and outstanding business contribution to the well-being of the community. The deadline for nominations to be returned to Babergh is the 30th November 2010, with judging taking place in early December and all winners notified by Christmas. Winners will then be invited to an awards ceremony being held on 9th March 2011. Jill Barton, Babergh’s Community Development Officer, said: “It is amazing that the scheme has been running for 19 years and there are still so many unrecognised people in our communities who give up their time voluntarily to serve others and we need to hear about all of them. “Without these individuals our communities would not thrive and grow and this is our way of saying thank you by recognising their commitment and dedication.” Mark Murphy, from BBC Radio Suffolk’s Breakfast programme, will compere the achievement awards ceremony and Prolog, of Sudbury, will sponsor the event for the tenth year. Further information and nomination forms are available from Jill Barton, Community Development Officer, Babergh District Council, Corks Lane, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 6SJ, by calling (01473) 826674 or emailing jill.barton@babergh.gov.uk. Nomination forms, award criteria and list of recognised voluntary organisations are also available on Babergh’s website: www.babergh.gov.uk/babergh/communityawards

Users and supporters of Hadleigh Swimming Pool are being invited to join in the celebrations to mark the successful completion of an ambitious programme to rebuild its changing rooms and reception area. Over the past six months or so, Hadleigh Swimming Pool has undergone extensive rebuilding work amounting to an investment of about half a million pounds. Over £300,000 of this has come from Babergh District Council with the remainder sourced from Sport England. As such, this is the largest non-housing project of its kind undertaken by Babergh for a number of years. According to Cllr Nick Ridley, Chairman of Babergh’s Strategy Committee “Hadleigh Pool is a much-loved local facility. Over and above the money Babergh invests each year in the maintenance and running of the Pool, we wanted to ensure that the whole user experience was as positive as possible. Recognising that the original changing rooms and reception area were a bit gloomy and old-fashioned we firmly believe that these replacements are a vast improvement for users and staff alike”. Cllr David Wood, Chairman of Babergh District Council, who will be presiding over the re-opening ceremonies added “this is good news for both users and staff and I would urge anyone in Hadleigh and the surrounding villages who might have been a bit put off swimming here by the old changing rooms in the past, to give the new experience another chance”. Tracey Copping, Chief Executive for South Suffolk Leisure, the company that manages the Pool on behalf of Babergh, explained “we are delighted with the results that have been achieved and we thank our loyal users for their understanding during this time. Our team will look forward to seeing faces old and new for many years to come”. An official re-opening ceremony is due to take place from 11.30am onwards on Saturday September 11 at which children who participate in the swim school sessions at the Pool will be present. After that, South Suffolk Leisure is inviting the public to join them for an afternoon of free fun activities for everyone including Family Splash, It’s a Knockout and Rookie Lifeguard.

Joyce Abbott Joyce passed away on 9th July, Hetty and Derick would like to thank everyone for the cards and all who attended the service. £233 have been sent to the Air Ambulance. A special thank you to Sam, Michelle, Molly, Sue and The Briarcare Team for being so kind to my sister.

I expect that like me you are down in the dumps when you have come back from a holiday. I have just returned from a Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club Rally around Brittany. I joined a fellow “petrol head” in his beautiful red pearl Bentley Turbo which in its day was one of the fastest production cars on the road. I had the pleasure of driving this magnificent beast and it certainly roared along. You will probably know that the French have wonderful roads which are largely clear of traffic and people. There were some twenty cars that took part in the Rally and the picture shows me with a rather lovely Rolls-Royce Corniche in larkspur blue on the sea front at Concarneau. Everyone enjoyed seeing a convoy of Rolls-Royce motor cars winding its way through towns and villages and parking in town squares for coffee and lunch stops. We were lucky enough to have with us a Rolls-Royce Phantom which was only a few years old and was formerly the property of the Duke of Westminster. At the mediaeval village of Locronan we were accorded the privilege of parking our motor cars in the town square of an otherwise traffic free area.We were ambassadors for Great Britain! The crossing from Portsmouth to St Malo aboard a Brittany Ferries vessel was a night crossing outbound. I was tucked up in bed in my night attire with my hot water bottle. The main restaurant was quite excellent. I enjoyed all sorts of morsels whilst the grand piano tinkled – I am so fond of that sort of thing. In the end, the exhaust of the Bentley warbled as I was wafted back to Hadleigh and to my clients whose needs are many and varied. The time of a death is always difficult. After the funeral there are so many things to sort out. I know that one or two of you take the view that a probate can be handled on a DIY basis. Probate has the propensity to become complicated and whilst naturally there is a cost – it would be peace of mind to put matters in our hands. We are local and so you can pop in and out as needed. I am going to make the most of the last vestiges of sunny days as I play for our Harvest Festival in Flowton and look forward to our Harvest Supper. Howard Gibbons

Struggle to hear at the theatre? The New Wolsey Theatre and Hearing Care Centre Launches Partnership Promoting Captioned Performances For many people a visit to the theatre can prove to be a difficult experience, as they may not be able to hear or follow what’s happening live on stage. Two well-known, local organisations have today pledged to tackle this problem head on and have launched a brand new partnership. Suffolk hearing care specialists, The Hearing Care Centre and The New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich are working closely together to raise awareness about new the facilities the theatre has to offer deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing audiences. The New Wolsey Theatre has always aimed to make their venue and artistic programme as accessible as possible to the broadest audiences. But now the theatre is able to offer a range of services including Captioned, British Sign Language (BSL), Interpreted and Audio Described performances. Captioning is a great way for anyone who finds it difficult to hear the actors speaking, to enjoy coming to the theatre. Similar to television subtitling, Captioned Performances enable patrons to follow all the action as the words spoken by the performers are displayed on a captioned unit including the name of the character who is speaking or singing and descriptions of any sound effects. As well as the captioning unit the theatre also offers an Infra Red Hearing System in the auditorium for patrons who would like hearing enhancement. Karen Finch, Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre, which has 13 centres across Suffolk said, “Being hearing impaired can be a very isolating experience. There is evidence that in some cases people can become withdrawn from their social circles, and stop doing activities like visiting the theatre. “We work with the hearing impaired community on a daily basis and recently learnt about all the great accessibility work The New Wolsey are putting in place. Through regular interaction with our customers and other contacts we want to help spread the word and get people enjoying the theatre once more,” said Karen. Kelly Kirkbride, Access Officer at the theatre said, “We are delighted to be working closely with The Hearing Care Centre on increasing and improving the access to theatre for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing audiences. We (New Wolsey) have always been convinced that more audience members use the captions than declare, so we carried out an experiment and identified that 30% of audiences found captioning in theatre useful.” Captioned Performances available this season include Oscar Wilde’s hilarious The Importance of Being Earnest, on Thursday 7th October 2010, Reasons to be Cheerful, between Thursday 14th – Saturday 16th October 2010, and the fantastic rock ‘n’ roll pano, Jack and the Beanstalk, on Friday 7th January 2011, which is exclusively sponsored by The Hearing Care Centre. To book or for more information call the New Wolsey Box Office on 01473 295900 or visit www.wolseytheatre.co.uk/access or www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/theatre.

Hello everyone Now that we seem to be slipping into the start of Autumn, I hope you have all enjoyed your summer. We had a successful and very enjoyable afternoon at the Garden Party in July. It was good to see you there and we hope to be able to repeat the event next year. Watch this space! Thank you again to Josie and Nick who so kindly lent us their fabulous garden that has the best views in the county ! The evenings will soon be drawing in with the clocks going back at 2am on Sunday 31st October. If you notice your street light is out, there is a number on the lamp post that you can call to have it fixed. It’s not long until we will all be enjoying fireworks but please spare a thought for your pets and ensure they are safe and untroubled at this festive time. If we get another particularly cold snap that comes early and you need some grit to be delivered, please let us know. Did you register for a Postal Vote when the forms came round? It is not too late to do so if you didn’t and it’s a great way to save your time on polling days and ensure you do not miss out on having your say. Just a reminder of a couple of useful telephone numbers for you: Police: 01473 613 500 (so as not to tie up emergency lines) and freephone for Crimestoppers is 08000 555 111. From time to time we have vacancies for School Governors and other posts. If you are interested in being considered for anything like this, please let us know and if there is nothing immediately available we will keep your name on file until something comes up that may be of interest to you. If you have any concerns, requests or suggestions to improve things in our community, or something you require help with, do not hesitate to let us know. If you feel you are able to offer help of any kind, also please do get in touch. We are all actively busy on your behalf on many matters and we are here to help you in any way we can and so make Hadleigh an even better place in which to live. Daisy Chain Dress Agency and Hadleigh Thrift Shop Daisy Chain and Hadleigh Thrift Shop would like to thank all its lovely customers, volunteers and the people who worked behind the scenes to help raise money for the Tree House appeal for the East Anglian Children's Hospice. The Fun Day which was held at the Ansell Hall on Saturday 11 September raised £713.50 for this worthy cause. A special thank you goes to the Ansell Hall for providing the venue, the Hadleigh Rugby Club for the BBQ and the sponsors of the raffle which included The King's Head, Morton Smith & Sands, The George, The Jolly Meat Company and The Rugby Club. Thank you to Barry Nutt & the Diamond Lights for performing. The raffle was a huge success with one lucky lady winning first prize of £100, and another thrilled customer won a three course meal for two at the King's Head. With the communities support Daisy Chain and The Thrift Shop are delighted to jointly sponsor St Mary's Porch Project in Hadleigh. Daisy Chain has a new selection of costume jewellery and winter clothes. Do look out next month for the dates of our Christmas Opening evenings - to find that special present. Not sure what to buy? Gift vouchers are just the ticket. For further information on Daisy Chain please call Joan on 01473 810 177 or pop into Daisy Chain. www.daisychainhadleigh.com Hadleigh Thrift Shop visited Albania in August, Pastor Martin from Ark of the Lord Church in Ipswich drove his people carrier loaded with donations from the generous community and Leiston Charity Shop run by Linda. We visited the Orphanage Maternity Hospital, the Disabled Centre and Family Link of Families. The good news is that the situation in Albania is slowly improving. Hadleigh Thrift Shop looks forward to the container full of NHS equipment going to Albania next April, which otherwise would end up in a landfill site. Thank you all for your continued support to help raise funds for all of these important charities and organisations.

We’ll be Rocking at Groton Church Rock and Folk returns to St Bartholomew’s Groton on October 8th with Robbie Gladwell and Friends. Also featuring Steve Laney and Charlie (Sloightly on th’ Huh) Haylock, and other artists. Not since the 60’s, when the Rev. Brian Bird put on jazz concerts, skiffle and folk nights, has such an array of talent been booked to provide an evening of rock, folk and fun, at Groton Church. Robbie Gladwell, as many of the local people will know, is famous for backing Suzie Quatro on her world tours, presently, part of Cockney Rebel, and is currently overseas on tour in his own right. But he will be at Groton on October 8th, commencing at 7.30pm, along with some of his Friends, all of them highly accomplished and talented musicians. Also appearing will be Steve Laney, and he’s no mean artist too, winning many coveted awards – just look at his website. Charlie (Sloightly on th’ Huh) Haylock, who needs no introduction, will be the compare. Other artists appearing will just add to this special musical extravaganza. Why is it so special? All proceeds will be going to Pump Farm School in Assington. A residential special needs school for young people with complex educational and social needs. Tickets cost £10 – Please ring – 01787 227344 – office hours or 07747794904 Charlie Haylock or Take a chance, and buy them on the night

Jerry’s Diary Now the other day ‘Oggy’ asked “How do you tell a Crow from a Rook”? I tried to explain that you would not see crows in such large flocks and they would have been Rooks. Crows usually are solitary or in pairs. There could be more crows together if they are feeding on carrion but usually only a few. The Jackdaw is the only corvid to mix with Rooks. In the winter Rooks and Jackdaws are seen at their communal roosts in their thousands. There are two such communal sites in the area, the biggest is at Higham Hill near the racecourse at Higham and can be seen from Shelley. This roost site holds a few thousand birds with as many Jackdaws as there are Rooks. The other roost site is at Benton End Farm, Hadleigh in and around the Poplar Trees and there must be four thousand plus birds at this roost. At the Higham site there was a pure white Rook and another year a pure white Jackdaw. These two white birds were only seen at dusk. Here I will try to explain the identification of the Rook and Carrion Crow: Rook: The base of the bill has a whitish unfeathered area which goes up to the area between the eye and the bill. The bill is a bit longer and more pointed than the Crow. The head/crown look more peaked than the crows more flat crown. The Crow or Rook? Rooks thighs have longer shaggy feathers whilst the crow only have short feathers on the thigh. In flight the rook has narrower and slighly longer wings but the difference can be subtle. The tail is slightly longer with almost wedge shaped tail-tip. The wingbeats are deeper and faster than the crow. To me the Rook appears more scruffy looking with its loose feathering. Crow: Flatter head/crown, broader wings almost square at the tail tip. No whitish feathers at the base of the bill, less shaggy thighs, shorter bill and seen in pairs or solitary, not in flocks. Jerry Oxford

And there it was gone… the summer I mean. I don’t know about you but the summer has just flown by for us here at the Donkey topped by the performance of Robbie Gladwell and Co. on bank holiday monday last. We just about got away with the weather that day, it has since cooled considerably. Being a bit of a kid at heart, and a man, I thought I would light the wood burner in the restaurant, well it was sort of nippy out side. There can be nothing better than a real fire to evoke allsorts of memories of winters gone by, mugs of hot tea and home baked cakes in my case, and of course, Christmas. Now funny that I should mention Christmas as we have our Christmas party, Christmas Day and New Years Eve menus now available, we are now taking bookings for all of these dates. We’re also open Boxing Day and New Years Day for brunch. (I’m glad I managed to get that in so seamlessly). Seriously though there can be nothing as comforting as a real fire, even those in the garden. Burning, tidying and pottering around the garden the other day, I noticed what looked like small meteor strikes. I was thinking this would be a good one to ring gardeners question time to puzzle them with. Looking around further, I found no less than seven of the said phenomenon, then our spaniel Murphy appears from behind the shed looking a bit dusty and some what pleased with himself, on inspection there was another meteor strike just there behind the shed, only this one had a hedgehog rolled up in the bottom. It would seem that Murphy had become playmates with a hedgehog and had tried to dig under him, on many occasions! Any one got any spare turf?! Cutting back the shrubs and clearing the garden is so satisfying, and also gives you an appetite. This time of year we are able to bring the numerous variety of squashes and root veg into the kitchen and for a real comforting lunch or supper a Bacon and Roasted Butter Nut Squash Risotto will hit the spot, this is my version.. Bacon & Roast Butter Nut Squash Risotto 1 Butter Nut Squash, peeled and chopped to 1/2 inch pieces 2 rashers smoked bacon, cut to small rice sized dice 1 medium to large onion, chopped very finely 1 fat clove of garlic, crushed 1 glass of good white wine (a Frascati is good) 300 grams of Arborio rice 1 litre good, hot vegetable stock 4 table spoons of olive oil 1/2 Nutmeg, salt, pepper and grated parmesan, rocket to garnish

Method: Toss the squash in a table spoon of oil and season with salt pepper and nutmeg spread evenly on a baking tray and bake for 30mins at 180 deg. C. Over a medium heat sauté the onions in the remaining oil, when the onions start to become translucent add the bacon and garlic, cook on for a three minutes. Add the rice stir in well, and again until translucent, pour in the wine, this sounds great and smells fantastic. When all but a drip of wine is left ladle in some stock and stir well adding more stock as it is absorbed into the rice stirring all the time until the stock is all used. Add the roasted squash and stir in gently. Check the rice is soft with a slight bite. Serve in shallow bowls sprinkle with grated parmesan and good olive oil and a few sprigs of rocket to garnish.

Enjoy. Kevin D.

Hadleigh Rangers visit Japan Our trip began on Sunday 1st of August. Our group consisted of 7 girls and 3 leaders all from East Anglia. We travelled from Heathrow airport to Dubai and then to Tokyo. The journey took 16 hours altogether. We were greeted at Tokyo airport by a Japanese Girl Scout and a Girl Scout leader. Home Stay From Tuesday 3rd of August to Thursday 5th of August, we stayed at the home of a Japanese family in Nagano. Each family had a girl who attended Girl Scouts in Japan. We all stayed with a separate family however, Shân was paired with one of our leaders, Jill. The time spent with the family was time to learn about the Japanese culture. We ate traditional foods, many of us tried on the traditional Japanese dress, a Kimono and we saw the sights of Nagano. We also endured the Japanese weather of 35 oc ! On the first evening we had a welcome party. Two Girl Scout units from Nagano joined together to hold this party. The age range of the girls was 5 to around 15. Becky, Jill and Shân were all at the same welcome celebration. The evening began by two Girl Scouts leading us into the hall and then we introduced ourselves. Next we made a giant roll of sushi which we then ate along with other Japanese food. After diner, we sang some songs and learnt some dances. The evening finished after we were presented with gifts. The girls were extremely welcoming and kind and we had a fantastic night. Camp - 90th Anniversary of Girl Scout Celebrations On Thursday morning, our home stay families took us to Nagano station where we would get a bus to camp in Togakushi. Lots of Girl Scouts who had hosted different welcome parties for other Girl Guides came to the station to say goodbye. The camp site was situated in the mountains next to Mount Togakushi. When we arrived at camp, we were in a hall with the 13 other countries that were attending the camp. They were Kuwait, Bangladesh, India, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, St Lucia, Hong Kong, Philippians, Denmark, Madagascar, South Korea and UK. We soon began to meet the girls from other countries and had lots of photos taken with them. Our tents were shared with people from the same country but we were in patrols with Japanese girls. We cooked all our meals with our patrols. The biggest barrier within our patrols was that many of the Japanese girls couldn’t speak English. During the days at camp we did different activities. One day we went canoeing and another day we did a mini Olympic Games with our patrols. Or group from the UK also had to attend the Mrs Weston Festival. This was a ceremony because Mrs Emily Weston was the first woman to climb Mount Togakushi and she was a British woman. At the ceremony, we raised the English and Japanese flags, presented gifts to guests and sang “Land of the Silver Birch” to visitors. At camp was had a variety of evening entertainment. We had an opening ceremony, an evening were we listened to a flute, international night and a camp fire. International night was where every country had to do a short performance that represented their country. We chose to do a dance to Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me now”. Many of the other countries performed traditional dances and wore traditional dress. The camp held an open day which was open to the general public. Each country had a booth where they informed visitors about their country. In the UK tent, we had marmite tasting, magazines and information about Girl Guiding UK. The princess of Japan and her daughter attended the event. As well as looking around the booths, the princesses had a welcome ceremony where one girl from each country attended and also a formal lunch. The open day was a huge success with hundreds of visitors. We had a campfire that evening combined with the closing ceremony. The camp finished on Monday 9th. We all thoroughly enjoyed camp and learnt so much about other countries and we made many new friends. Tokyo This was the part of the trip we had planned as a group. We wanted to visit and explore as much as Tokyo as possible. In our two and a half days, we visited shrines and temples, went to the Tokyo National Museum, explored parks, had a river tour, shopped at Harajuku and took a Rickshaw ride. We stayed in a youth hostel on the edge of Tokyo. These last few days finished off a fantastic trip. During our time in Japan we embraced a completely new culture, ate very different and often strange foods, overcame language barriers and had an amazing adventure. We arrived home to the rain in England on Friday 13th. Thank you to everyone who supported us financially with this unforgettable experience. Becky Irwin and Shân Bendall

CLUB MATTERS: This year the summer outingtook the form of a lunch at Seckford Hall Hotel, Woodbridge. The weather was glorious and after an excellent lunch there was the opportunity to relax in the garden over a coffee and take a walk in the grounds. CHARITABLE EVENTS: A garden party was held at the home of Rotarian John Robinson in aid of the Pakistan Flood Disaster. Good food and weather encouraged everyone to give generously and £450 was raised. This will be channelled through Rotary relief organisations in order to ensure that help quickly reaches the people who need it. SPEAKERS: 1 The new District Governor, Rodney Howell, paid his annual visit to rally the troops! He emphasised the importance of continuing to grow membership with the good news that the number of clubs in the district had inceased to 77. He is seeking more cooperation between clubs for major fund raising events and membership drives. 2 Barry Chaplin, club member, described a recent holiday in the Rockies. The tour covered 3500 miles taking in Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Pass, Yellowstone National Park and finally the Grand Canyon. At one point he was at 12000 feet with 20 foot snow drifts on either side of the road. He was particularly impressed with the hot springs and wildlife in Yellowstone as well as the spectacular views in the Grand Canyon. 3 Tony Hasler, a member of Bury St Edmunds Club, spoke about Aid to Hospitals Worldwide which is based in Bury. This organisation collects redundant equipment and a great variety of other medical supplies from hospitals, doctors and dentists surgeries, nursing homes etc and recycles them to third world countries. At the moment they supply some 33 countries in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. The charity has experienced technical volunteers available to ensure that the equipment is fully serviceable before shipment. This year Rotary is supporting this project and will be seeking all kinds of equipment, supplies, tools etc which might otherwise be scrapped. If any local surgery, nursing home etc believes that they may be able to help please contact the Ha dleigh Club. Redundant school equipment is also welcome including computers , chairs and desks. 4 Cindy Hilton from Priory Hall in Benton Street outlined the modern history of the house. The origins are Tudor but the property was extensively rebuilt and expanded in the 1930's by a member of the Brocks Fireworks family, Nelson Everard Dixon. He also added a swimming pool and tennis courts as well as landscaping the gardens which remain much the same today. He was a well known figure in Hadleigh being Master of the Hunt, a Patron of Hadleigh Cricket Club and founder of the Dixon Darts League . During the second world war the house was requisitioned by the Army and then sold in 1945 to the family of Mrs C Breitmeyer who lived there until her death in 1985. She was also well known in the town and opened her gardens once or twice a year for charity. Since Mr and Mrs Hilton took possession they have carried out a major restoration of the house and returned the gardens to their former glory. It is now a very popular wedding venue as well as a family home. Future Programme: October 7 Business Meeting, October 14 Garden Birdwatch - RSPB speaker, October 21 Make friends with your Computer - Mike Sands, October 28 Another Sea Battle - Richard Gates For all information about Hadleigh Rotary Club and New Membership Enquiries please contact Rotarian Alan Williams Tel 01473 830229

Library Link Reading Challenge Congratulations to all those children who took part in this year’s Reading Challenge and read 6 books over the summer holiday. We had 120 children complete the challenge. Well done! Thank you to all our volunteers and staff who encouraged the children to read their books as well as talk about what they had read. Thank you also to Councillor David Grutchfield for presenting the certificates and medals. Ansell Centre Boosted By Biffaward Members and friends of Hadleigh United Reformed Church (URC) and all users of the Ansell Centre are celebrating a £27,000 grant from Biffaward, a multimillion pound environment fund managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts which uses landfill tax credits donated by Biffa Waste Services. The Planning Committee of Hadleigh URC became very excited in May 2009, when after submitting an initial grant application to Biffaward, they were invited by The Board to make a full formal application. During the year they worked hard to meet the criteria for grant aid to enable the repair and refurbishment to the windows and floor of the Ansell Centre and were delighted when a year later in May 2010, they were given a Conditional Offer of £27,000 to carry out this work. This conditional offer was converted into a Formal Offer Agreement during August 2010 and work started virtually immediately. Thanks to the prompt and efficient work of the contractors, substantial repairs to the suspended floor have now been completed. It is hoped that the repairs and replacement of the windows totalling £20,000 will also be completed by the end of October. The £27,000 Biffaward grants includes a 10% contribution from the Eastern Synod of the URC. Under government regulations only 90% of a grant can be provided from landfill tax – the rest must come from another source. A representative from Biffaward, Gillian French, said, “It is crucial for communities to have places to meet, whether that is a dedicated building or an open space, and Biffaward invests heavily to support them. The renovated Ansell Centre will provide a warm, welcoming venue for all kinds of community activities.” Jan Dicks, member of the Hadleigh URC Buildings Group and bookings secretary for the Ansell Centre, said, “We are very grateful to Biffaward for granting us this funding which will secure the use of the Ansell Centre for many years to come. It will enable us to continue to rent out this Grade 2 Listed Building to a wide variety of local groups and ensure that the two Ansell Community Centre Lunch Clubs and Hollywood in Hadleigh Digital Cinema can carry on providing services for the local community in our newly renovated premises.” The Ansell Centre, together with the church itself and its associated meeting rooms, is used by approximately 1,000 people a week and is now home to fourteen different groups who hire the premises on a regular basis. In addition it is available to rent at very reasonable rates for coffee mornings, table top sales, parties, discos and other similar events. Further information is available on the URC or ACC websites – www.hadleighurc.org.uk or www.ansellcc.org.uk. Biffa provides a range of public sector, commercial and industrial waste collection services as well as the management of 29 operational landfill sites across the UK. The multi-million pound a year Biffaward fund has been set up using tax charged on waste taken into landfill sites, to help finance environmental projects near Biffa sites.

Sorry, No Trick or Treat Now that the days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder, it must mean that Hallowe’en is on its way. Every year, Trick or Treat is a tradition that can be great fun for some, but can make all sorts of other people feel uncomfortable especially when behaviour is threatening or antisocial. Many people find it virtually impossible to make it clear that they would rather not take part. Once again the Churches in Hadleigh have joined up with the Hadleigh Primary Schools, Hadleigh High School and the local Police to make sure that everyone in our community has a choice. With the “Sorry, No Trick or Treat cut out leaflet enclosed in this months magazine you can make it clear that you're opting out of Trick or Treat by simply displaying the leaflet in a prominent position in a window or doorway. But if you want to join in with the tradition as always, don't do anything different at all. Either way, we hope these leaflets will make a real difference and give everyone the chance to make a choice that is right for them. If your children are already looking forward to Trick or Treat, please ensure that they are fully supervised and respect the wishes of people who have displayed the leaflet in their window by only knocking on the doors of houses where you know you’ll be welcome. For further quantities of the “Sorry, No Trick or Treat leaflets please contact Pastor Greg Frost on 01473 823804

It’s difficult to know where to begin after a visit to Otley Hall. For one thing this private residence has its roots in Anglo-Saxon times and, with additions and subtractions to the property and grounds taking place throughout that time span, the result is a fascinating insight into life and architecture through the ages. Spice that up with its connections to Shakespeare, Oswald Mosley, Martha’s Vineyard and the illustrious Gosnold family and you have all the ingredients for an interesting tour. With the help of their two knowledgeable, humorous guides, the resident owners, Ian and Catherine Beaumont allowed the Fidelis group to explore & learn about their home. We saw wall coverings, floor tiles, wood panelling and carving dating back to the 1500’s some unique to Otley Hall. There were tales of rags to riches, ghosts and lovers, drama and exploration to the New World. Alterations, extensions and refurbishment of the property, which are still in place hundreds of years later, was mind blowing and put many of our modern day builders to shame. Although the entire site has shrunk from over a 1,000 acres in its heyday to the current 10 acres the gardens are magnificent and full of history too. After a tasty Ploughman’s lunch the group were able to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the grounds. Apart from private visits there are also public open days, weddings, conference facilities and ‘quiet’ days at this unique residence. The New Wolsey Theatre The New Wolsey Theatre is delighted to welcome The Mill, the new show from Ockham’s Razor, for a spectacular outdoor performance in Ipswich. The Mill is touring the UK from September till December 2010. It premiered earlier this year with three sold-out nights at the Linbury Studio, Royal Opera House; and got a fantastic response from audiences and the press. For The Mill, Ockham’s Razor has once again used their unique aerial skills to create a visually stunning piece of theatre. They have designed a new structure involving a large wheel made from wood and metal which is suspended in the air and powered by the strength and weight of the five performers. The action takes place in, on top and beneath it and it is linked with rope and wooden drums to become part of a bigger system; creating a world where a seemingly small decision or action gathers momentum and impetus beyond your control. Ockham’s Razor have worked in collaboration with Toby Sedgwick as director (winner of Olivier Award for Best Theatre Choreographer for the National Theatre production War Horse and founder member of 1980s cult group Moving Picture Mime Show) and dramaturg Rufus Norris (Evening Standard Award for best Director). “ engaging and ingenious The Financial Times “comedy and drama The Independent “a hugely promising young aerial company who don't just have superb circus skills, but also highly creative brains. The Guardian

Lavender Hall Kindergarten News from The Station Dear Readers, Welcome to this months news from the Police Station. Whilst out on patrol around the Town many residents have brought to my attention their frustrations with cyclists who ride on pavements and often show little regard for the safety or space of pedestrians. Whilst there are offences for cycling on pavements, we recognise and appreciate that many of us have never received appropriate training for riding pedal cycles on the road. We have officers at Hadleigh Police Station who are trained to deliver such training, and would urge anyone who does not feel confident to cycle on the road to get in touch with us to arrange a suitable input. We are also now looking forward to Halloween and bonfire night, and making our policing plans to accommodate the busy times ahead. In recent years we have made available posters to members of the public who do not wish to receive trick or treaters knocking at their doors. This year will be no different, and over the coming weeks we will be keeping a number of these posters in the reception area of the Police Station. Please come in, or contact us if you would like a copy. For those of you who are out and about, we ask you to respect the wishes of others and please act in a responsible manner when knocking on doors around the Town. We ask that you observe the laws with fireworks. If you are under 18, you can't buy the types of fireworks which can be sold only to adults, or have fireworks in public places. If you do, the police can give you an on-the-spot fine of £80. It is also against the law to set off or throw fireworks in the street or other public place, or set off fireworks between 11.00 pm and 7.00 am (except during certain celebrations) If found guilty by the courts, you could be fined up to £5,000 and can be imprisoned for up to three months. You may be liable for an on-the-spot fine of £80. Fireworks are dangerous, and used inappropriately could cause serious injury. Intelligence regarding the use of recreational drugs continues to come into us, and we have reinforced our commitment to dealing with these issues by deploying plain-clothes officers around the Town along with a passive drugs dog from Suffolk Police dog section. Whilst it was pleasing to have a negative result, we continue to look to build on the information that we receive, and target those individuals who continue to flout our drugs laws. Remember, cannabis is a class B drug, and it is illegal to carry it, smoke it, produce it, or sell it. Finally the next Safer Neighbourhood Team Meeting will be held at Pinewood Baptist Church on October 20th 2010, followed by one at Hadleigh High School on November 17th. These are open public meetings, so please feel free to attend. Until next time, Matt. PC 1455 Paisley, Babergh East Safer Neighbourhood Team, Hadleigh Police Station babergheast.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk

Poets Corner Let yourself fly Individuals who never encounter an adversary in life are rare. There will always be people, who revel in causing misery, without a care. Whether they are jealous of others happiness. Their behaviour is a mystery to me, I must confess. If you find yourself in such a situation, do as I do. Never, ever show they have gotten to you. Just smile, never retaliate, do not say one word. You are so much better than that, let your laughter be heard. This is your life, so make it count. They mean nothing, not even a tiny amount. Walk proud, hold your head up high. Dismiss their ignorance and let yourself fly.

Served with home made bread and a good selection of salads and hot potatoes. Followed by a chance to indulge yourselves in a frenzy of freshly made puddings with jugs of cream and custard. As always there will be a mixture of traditional steamed puddings and the purely indulgent! Throughout the evening Simon will be using some good local produce to show how shopping locally can enhance your eating experience. Most of the recipes are on our new web site.

David Grimsey Helen, Joanne, Carol and Kevin would like to thank everyone who attended the church service and who donated money to the P.D.S.A. The family would also like to thank everyone for the cards and kind thoughts which were much appreciated. David was a loving and caring husband, dad and grandad who we will miss dearly but will never be forgotten.

Edwardstone Christmas Fair 2010 With Autumn seemingly upon us, here’s a reminder about this year’s Fair! It’s going to be better than ever! Dates: November 4th and 5th. Venues: Edwardstone Church and Village Hall. Attractions: Fabulous Christmas stalls (more than ever!) – our best performers from last year, together with some fantastic new stalls full of exciting Christmas gift ideas: delicious food and drink, jewellery and accessories, textiles, books, stationery, kitchenware, toys and much much more! This year our chosen charity is: Suffolk Young Carers - a really worthwhile organisation that supports those young people who do the very difficult job of helping someone in their family “by providing care and support that would usually be given by an adult”. And, as always, we will also be raising funds for: Edwardstone Church – any of you who’ve been up there recently will know that the church has been closed during August for vital and costly works. Edwardstone Village Hall – a valuable local amenity whose facilities are regularly updated. Posters will be going up and invitations will be distributed in early October but if you need any more information in the meantime, please contact Diana on 01787 211403

Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre The autumn term is now under way with all of the Herd now back at the Centre from their summer holidays; some, I think, wished they had stayed away because Parys is boring everyone to tears about her operation to remove a lump from her forehead and showing anyone that comes near her scar…..yawn!! Thankfully, she can’t get into my room, otherwise you can imagine my plight, being bolted to the floor, and not having the ability to escape unlike the real horses who can gallop off? It’s good to see both Helpers and Riders returning to the Centre and the “Buzz” it generates. We have a number of new Helpers starting this term, so welcome to all of you and I hope you enjoy your time with us and gain much satisfaction once you see the enormous benefits our Riders get from coming to the Centre. Thanks for responding to my earlier Blogs on the need for additional Helpers. Well, believe it or not, it’s time to think of Christmas which leads well into my recent chat with Diane Godfrey. She invites all of you to come to Whatfield Village Hall on Saturday 16th October, 10.30 – 15.30hrs, to a SALE of New, Nearly New and Vintage Clothing, Accessories, Table and Bed Linen as well as other gifts to raise funds for the Centre. Those participating include Alaric Clothing & Accessories: Lily Lemon: Park Lace & Linen plus a range of goods from The Shelley Centre. I also noticed, laying around on a cabinet in my room, a leaflet for those at the Centre to donate their unwanted clean, quality clothing and accessories to the event. So have a rummage through the wardrobes to make room for your new party wear by getting rid of the old but, remember, only good clean quality items please and they need to be delivered to the Centre by no later than 04th October. In addition to new Helpers we have some new Riders too. However, we also say farewell to two of our long term Riders, Evie and her brother Jake; Evie will now concentrate her efforts on her GCSE examinations. Good luck to both of you and Evie, please do keep in touch to let us know how you progress with your exams. Evie and Jake, as with all Riders who leave us, never cease to remain a part of “The Shelley Centre Family” and we never lose interest in them. Looking over Jan Derbyshire’s shoulder I was able to read a very nice letter from Evie and Jake’s parents in which they have explained the benefits to Evie and Jake of being part of the Shelley Centre’s activities and whilst it would take up too much editorial space to be published in our local Community News Magazines, we do hope to put it onto our Web site in due course. Well, must be off; need to do my bit to acclimatise our new Riders and Helpers and help them settle in; will chat again next month. Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473.824172

Carnival back after 5 years by the Hadleigh Entertainments Committee The Hadleigh Ents Committee are back in action and has successfully had its first event, Hadfest. The week started with a darts night held at the Royal British Legion hosted my Melvin. Thirteen teams of three took part in the competition. After all rounds had been played the final between Goldstar and Earwig-O, Goldstar won the triples game and doubles to go two up but the latter three won all the singles to lift the Matey Chisnall Cup. A good night was had by all with teams coming from as far afield as Lawford. Many thanks to the RBL and all who took part and for Melvin for arranging it all, a total of £146.00 was raised towards the Hadleigh Entertainments Committee. On the 29th Aug it was the day of HADFEST the committee were up early in the market place helping set up the stage area while others were in Barclays car park waiting for the Robot wars, Climbing wall and bouncy castles to arrive. At midday the carnival procession was starting to form at the Hadleigh Community Primary school who we thank for the use of the playground. Its been 5 years since we had a carnival in Hadleigh and I was so pleased to see so many groups taking part. At 1pm the order was ready so we set off from the school, down Magdalen road round by the Kings head pub, on to the high street and back to the school. The weather was fine until we got back to the school when it tipped it down with rain. I would like to thank the following groups in order of the carnival. Hadleigh Police for all the hard work of blocking the roads off on route and also being at the start and finish of the carnival, Barry Nuts band who played all the way along the carnival, the Hadleigh fire men for bringing the engine down to be in the procession, Hads for bringing a massive crowd down to advertise the Alice show in November, The eight bells pub and the pirates who are ALWAYS brilliant with ideas and always willing to help with any events the Ents committee do, Barry Dallas and the Hadleigh sea scouts who brought a boat down well done to all the kids who decided to get revenge on the eight bells pirates outside of co-op, the award winning Diamond Lites Majorettes who managed to take part at the last minute as another function was cancelled. The bucket collection was for The Royal Air Forces Association which we made £223.00 we thank the team for coming down and Richard Seed for arranging it for us. At 1.30pm the Barclays car park came to life with a inflatable's for all ages, Climbing wall, the team from robot wars with the massive house robot Major Damage and also the mini robots to have a go on. Also I would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to the only 2 local groups to come forward to have a space in the fun area. First of all the Ipswich Building Society who bought the Wonderwall with them. This is where people write down what they think of Suffolk and stick it on the wall, this went down really well and as a treat you also got a free ice cream too. You can see pictures of this on the face book page http://www.facebook.com/SuffolkWonderwall. Also a massive thanks goes to Layham Playgroup who had activitys for young children including a sand pit and also other goodies too. Well done for all your efforts and i hope when we next do an event more local groups will come forward to take part. The market place was the location of the main stage area which had a busy timetable of live bands and entertainment. We had the following live music on stage Karl Chalmers, Inkysmudge, Serious Delirium, Roddy and the Rejects, 7th Note, Aaron Short, Screaming Beans and the Steel pictures to end the night off at 10pm. Other entertainment included the Fantastic live performance from the Hads show Alice in Wonderland which starts in November so thanks for the Hads group for that brilliant show. Also our runners up from "Has Hadleigh Got Talent" Alfie, Megan & Natalie who performed brilliantly on stage. Also a really BIG well done and thank you to Harry and to Kelly who won the talent show and

performed fantastically and also had a surprise afterwards when they was awarded studio time at planet music in Woodbridge. Thank you to Chloe from the Ipswich Building Society for arranging this for us and also to planet music for donating this brilliant prize. My last thank you for entertainment goes to Becky Baldry who is always willing to perform on stage for us and provided 3 fantastic songs for us so thanks Becky. I hope you agree the stage this year was fantastic and very professional well done to Richard for finding this and also to Sarah T and Simon T and Richard and Helen Seed for hosting and looking after the stage all day and keeping the crowds entertained. Also in the market place area we had Weavers spice for a curry in a hurry and also the Sea scouts with hot dogs and burgers so we thank you very much for taking part and helping us out. The Ents committee is self funded but backed up by the Hadleigh Town Council, we always are keen to receive donations and sponsorship from local groups and businesses so thank you to the Hadleigh charity shop for the donation of £500 which went towards the live bands at the event. After our latest meeting we thought the whole event went VERY well and we are proud to put events on in Hadleigh mostly for free but to do this we need the backing from the public and also local businesses too. The only down bit of the event this time was the weather which cannot be helped BUT we have some exciting news about out next events planned. The next event is our Craft fair on the 28th November at the town hall complex. Here you will find lots of home made crafts and ideas for Christmas, I will have more news about this next month but if you would like to take part in the craft fair forms are flying out and can be obtained by calling Sarah on 01473 828097 or e-mailing me on hadleighents@aol.com. At the meeting we was discussing the Christmas lighting up which I can now say will be on the 3rd of December, yet again more information will be on its way soon so keep your eyes open. The committee have been working hard and are happy to be putting events on in Hadleigh but this cannot be done with out helpers. If you think you would like to have input in to our events then attend our next meeting at the Guild hall at the town hall (opposite the church yard) on the 6th October starting at 7:30pm or for more information please e-mail us on Hadleighents@aol.com or visit our website for photos videos of Hadfest and other events at www.hadleighents.webs.com. I would like to thank all the members of the committee for all the help and dedication of the events and i look forward to working with you all in the future. Trev Clarke, Chairman of the Hadleigh Entertainments Committee

manor of Overbury Hall was Lord John Wysham. Unfortunately the available documents do not tell us whether either of them actually lived in or visited their respective Layham manors. It was very often the case that the ruling classes owned estates all round the country and appointed ‘managers’ to make these lands profitable.

Letter from Layham Layham Parish Council There was no meeting of the Council in August. A short Planning meeting was held on 1 September. • The plan to convert a small barn to tourist accommodation at the Queen’s Head was strongly supported. • There was no objection to the plan for a substantial garage to be built at White Gables although the Council wished to ensure it could not be converted into a separate dwelling at some future date.

Henry of Dorset, in his role as serjeant, managed the Overbury estate for Lord John Wysham. Richard Barat, as reeve, did likewise for Netherbury manor until October 1338 when the unenviable office passed to Roger Leggy. A serjeant was usually a relatively well paid post but the reeve, undertaking similar duties in overseeing the running of a manor, was appointed by his fellow tenants [often against his will] or, as a holder of around 30 acres of land, had to take his turn; his reward was an increased grain allowance and exemption from all or some of his labour services.

Congratulations to Charlene Clarke and Michael Newman on their recent marriage at St Andrew's.

Harvest Supper : Friday 8 October All are warmly invited to join us at a harvest supper in the village hall after the 7pm service. Rev Paul Hambling will preach at the service.

HOT SUNDAY LUNCH Layham Village Hall, 12.30 on 31 October 2010 £7.50 for adults, Book by 26th Oct with either Sonia Groom on 822220 or Audrey King on 822081.

A reeve supervising tenants at work on the manor’s harvest Robert the Hayward had responsibility for overseeing the all-important harvest at Netherbury and Richard Wrong the bailiff possibly held some manor courts on behalf of Countess Margaret. John of Lavenham was parson of Layham church with three chaplains to assist him in the village – Lord Gilbert, John the Warner and Gilbert of the Wood. It is difficult to imagine why there was need for so much spiritual guidance in Layham at that time! A country parson of the time Next month – watch out for a piece on some of the ‘ordinary folk’ who lived in Layham in the 1330s. Margaret Woods

Playing Field 100 Club The winners of the August draw were: £15 Ticket No 52 Stone £10 Ticket No 56 Morsman There will be one more draw at the end of September and then members of the Playing Field Management Committee will be knocking on your doors in the hope that you will want to support the work of the Playing Field for another year. From the Layham Archive Layham folks in the 1330s (Part 1) From surviving manorial documents, almost 700 years old, we can tell the occupations of some of the people who lived in Layham village in the 1330s. This short article deals with those in authority at the time. Typical manorial court records. Those surviving for Layham are in the Bury Record Office. Netherbury Hall manor was held by Margaret, Countess Dowager of Kent, widow of Edmund of Woodstock, Earl of Kent and the sixth son of Edward I. The lord of the 28

Layham Playgroup Autumn in Layham, It’s good to be back! Our children are settling back in after their summer holidays and as we get to know all of our new children, we are looking at the topic ‘our favourite things’ and discovering everyone’s likes and dislikes. We have some very imaginative and entertaining children! We are making the most of any late summer sunshine by playing outside and exploring autumn and harvest time. We plan to take some walks up the lane to collect conkers and to visit St. Andrews church next month to celebrate Harvest Festival. Many thanks to all of you who braved the rain to come and see us at our Hadfest stall. Despite the unfriendly weather we had plenty of visitors, big and small, who enjoyed the fun and games on offer and helped us raise funds for playgroup. We shall be buying new craft equipment for use in this term’s exciting creative projects. As reported in August, our children took part in a toddlethon last term. With all the money now in, we can report that just over £200 was raised and we have been able to donate over £100 of this to HomestartBabergh. What a wonderful effort, well done everyone! At time of writing, we are all busy sorting through our wardrobes and airing cupboards to fill our ‘Cash4Schools’ collection bags in order to continue to provide excellent new resources to support this term’s fun and learning. October’s fundraiser will soon be upon us, we are hosting a ‘Pampered Chef’ party night at Layham village hall on Monday 11th October at 7.30. There will be a small charge on the door but this will include a welcome drink and nibbles. Please come along and bring your friends, our last party was a great success and a very funny night out. More details of the evening are available from Becki on 824288. If you are looking to creatively occupy your 21/2 to 4 year old and would like to visit or an information pack then please contact Linda on 01473 828974 or email us at admin@layhamplaygroup.co.uk. Approval was recommended (voting was unanimous) B/10/00890/FHA 28 Bridge Street, Hadleigh Erection of single-storey rear extension to bathroom. HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Full Council Meetings: Date of Next Meetings at 7.30pm Thursday 21st October 2010 Thursday 18th November 2010 Planning Committees Date of Next Meeting at 7.30pm Thursday 21st October 2010 Thursday 18th November 2010

HADLEIGH HEALTH CENTRE (Parking Issues) The Chair brought an article from August’s Community News to the meeting as it stated that “From 1st August 2010 we propose to trial a new parking system for the doctors, visiting clinicians and all staff of the Health Centre. This will result in the vast majority of staff parking off site in order to allow you to park easier.” The Chair was concerned as to where the staff were going to park. The Clerk reported that arrangements were in place for the staff to park at the Millfield. REPORT ON MEETING WITH MIKE HAMMOND, BABERGH DISTRICT COUNCIL The Chair reported that the meeting went well and various issues had been discussed. The Town Clerk will provide a more detailed report at the next meeting. ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS Members requested that at future meetings in conjunction with the lap top paper plans be displayed on the boards and a Schedule of Decisions be provided listing all the District Council’s decisions. The Chair presented a request from Babergh District Council to divert the public footpath outside the swimming pool to accommodate the new leisure facility. There were no objections raised. Councillor Grutchfield requested a letter be sent to the District Council to find out why new developments were being held up, especially Grays Close and Fullers Close and were there other sites where Hadleigh Town Council have given permission but were being delayed. Councillor Grimsey requested the Clerk to ascertain if the Station Road application was a District Council’s Officer delegated decision. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.30pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons)

Halloween, on the 31st October, focuses on the dark side, evil spirits. All Saints, the following day, celebrates the inherent goodness in ordinary human beings. It is a contrast between, good and evil, night and day, dark and light. In our lives we always have the choice for good or for evil. When God created the world, he looked at it and said that it was good. Human beings have the potential for sacrificial love or for hateful violence. Jesus says, ‘Choose love.’

What do you think...... about Halloween......over a drink? Halloween, or All Hallows’ Eve, is supposedly when evil spirits are about. It contrasts with All Hallows, or All Saints Day, when the saints of God are celebrated. The dark 2010 of night represents evil and the light Date: October of day stands for good. We cannot deny the existence of both good Pubn: Hadleigh Comm News and evil, but what do we think about spirits, and can they too be good 1/8 page (65x95) or evil? Phone and Web Electoral Registration on the up! Around 10,500 Babergh households who have updated their electoral role information using the phone or internet have managed to save their district council ÂŁ1,000 in postal charges. In August, new voter registration forms dropped on to the doormats of 38,500 residential properties across the Babergh district. The Council has been pleased with the response so far, which is nearly one thousand more than at the same time last year, but there are still 13,000 properties where no reply has yet been received. Ray Amesbury, Babergh’s Senior Democratic Services Manager, said: “We are delighted at the number of people who have chosen to use the telephone and internet service to reply as this helps us to keep the cost of compiling the new register down. “But, although we are pleased with the response so far, we cannot afford to be complacent. “By law, we have to complete a full canvass every year to ensure that everyone who is entitled to be on the electoral roll is registered and so we will shortly be posting out reminder forms to the addresses that have still to respond. “After that, the Council will need to hire canvassers to obtain the information. This is a much more expensive proposition and so I would urge everyone to return their details as soon as possible and, if there are no changes to be made to those already printed on their form, to use the telephone or internet service wherever possible.â€? The information that householders provide will be used to create the register of electors that will be published on 1 December and will continue in force until the end of November 2011. The register will be used to determine who may vote at all elections and referendums held during that period. Where changes are required to the details already printed on the forms, householders should mark the changes on the form and return it by post in the envelope provided to Babergh District Council’s offices in Corks Lane, Hadleigh, Ipswich, IP7 6SJ. The changes will then come into effect upon publication of the new register in December. Anyone who needs help with filling in the form, should call Babergh’s electoral services office on (01473) 825713.

Headteacher’s introduction

School Sports Clubs

It is a pleasure to be able to start our new academic year by sharing our GCSE results which arrived in the summer. These are the second best results the school has ever achieved with 63% of pupils gaining 5 or more GCSE passes at grades A*- C including C or better in both English and Mathematics. This was an increase of 11% compared to last year and a testament to the hard work of pupils and staff as well as the support of parents in encouraging their child/ren to revise. I would like to thank the parents of Year 11 pupils who have worked so productively in partnership with staff to ensure their child/ren made the most of the opportunities we offer at Hadleigh. Behind this headline figure were many individual ‘bests’; pupils who had studied incredibly hard to achieve their full potential, regularly committing 15 or more hours each week on their studies outside the classroom, attending extra sessions after school and in their holidays ensuring they left school this year with the very best outcomes of which they were capable. Achieving excellent results allows our young people leave us particularly well qualified to succeed in their lives, whatever routes they wish to take. Examinations are one element of this success, but I would like to mention the wide range of personal, social, learning and thinking skills which our pupils have acquired during their five years at the school. I am confident that our pupils will make an exceptionally positive contribution to the life of our community and I am extremely proud of their achievements.

This year there will be a brand new sports club added to the club list as the skate park makes its first appearance at Hadleigh High. Participants will be skating on a tarmac surface using small ramps and other obstacles provided by the Suffolk School Sports Partnership. The skate park will be located on the front playground on Thursdays after school from 16th September to 22nd of October and will only be available for half a term. Also, returning to Hadleigh High is the archery club starting on Mondays after school from 20th September. As well as all of that Chelsea Bennett will be back for the hip hop class on Mondays after school in the gym.

The Shakespeare Schools’ Festival On Monday 13th September 16 students from Year 10 and 11 took part in a workshop at Colchester University with another local school for the Shakespeare Schools’ Festival. The students enjoyed a session of drama games and characterisation exercises, to help them with getting into the role of their characters. The festival will take place on Tuesday the 5th October at the Lakeside Theatre. There will be four schools taking part, each performing a different Shakespeare play. Hadleigh High will be performing Macbeth. If you would like tickets please call 01206 873 261. Please come and support the school and your friends; all are welcome.

Welcome to all New Students and Teachers We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of the new Year 7 students to Hadleigh High and hope they have all settled in well. We would also like to welcome all the new students in other years as well as the new staff who have joined the school this year. We wish them all good luck for the years to come.

Diplomas The diploma is an exciting new qualification which was been introduced for the Year 10’s to take this year. This course is a new applied learning course which helps the students to gain knowledge and have an alternative option to traditional qualifications. This is a qualification which is supported by both employers and universities. The courses will equip you with the skills which you will need for further or higher education. You have the option of studying the course at either a higher or a foundation level. The different diplomas which you can study include: Creative and Media, Construction and the Built Environment, Environmental and Land Based Studies, Hair and Beauty, Information Technology, Society Heath and Development and Travel and Tourism. Students who have taken the diploma have all given positive feedback about them. They are all enjoying the opportunity to learn in different environments and different ways as well as make new friends.

A New Council… This year is going to be the start of something new at Hadleigh High: a new council. This idea has come from many of the pupils at the school becoming interested in the world around us and how we change the course of the future. Miss Hogan and Mrs. Calvino have been supporting the launch of this innovative concept. The aim of the new council is to focus on gaining the Eco Schools Green Flag status for Hadleigh High School. If we managed to achieve this status we would be the second school in Suffolk to accomplish this. The council will be made up of two representatives from each year group. The aim is to have a council meeting once a fortnight and to achieve the Eco Schools silver award by 2011. The council will also be responsible for identifying and implementing initiatives which will improve our school environment and be responsible for overseeing the development of the school’s outdoor learning area or council. If you would like further details about this project then please do visit www.eco-schools.org.uk Written by; Karina Brown, Georgina Elmer, Rebecca Ferrier, Millie Forbes, Lorna McGhee, Paul Midgley, Simon Partridge and Megan Wilson.

Hadleigh Healing Society - Shelagh Grant

Nursery Refurbishment Once again, essential maintenance was carried out over the summer. This time, it was Nursery’s turn. They had new sinks fitted which has made an enormous difference to all the children. Mrs Gage, Nursery Assistant explained: “We are all thrilled. The children love the new taps as they are single lever and easier to use for all abilities including children with disabilities – which is why we had them changed in the first place.” We are sure our new intake will have a wonderful time using these, and the other superb facilities in our specialised building. Improvements to our Reception area Our Reception outdoor classroom has recently benefitted from a gazebo, kindly paid for by our HSA. Some of you may have seen the Tombola stall set up there when it was only half finished, during our school fete in the summer! It has proved to be a popular place for our younger children to play. In addition to the gazebo, we felt that Reception children needed an all weather outdoor area in which to play, and therefore a new canopy is about to be fitted. Our new children have already settled down well, and are enjoying their time with Mrs Wells and Miss Knock. Changes to our Leadership Team this term Mrs Watts has taken the role of Acting Head Teacher until January when our new Head Teacher, Mr. Jackson joins the school. Until then, she will be supported by 4 deputies (all members of the Management Team): Mondays =Mrs Beaumont-George Tuesdays =Mrs Clarke Wednesdays =Mrs Rankin Thursdays =Mrs Thomas Fridays= The above on a rota basis. Year 4 trip On Friday 17th September, year 4 visited Bildeston Primary school to use their stream as part of their ‘Habitats’ topic. We would like to thank Bildeston school for being so accommodating once again, and for the support we received from the High School for this visit. Harvest Assembly We celebrated Harvest in a different way this year. Reverend Thrower, from St Mary’s Church, led our whole school celebration, and we collected tins of food to be donated to the FIND charity (families in need). A huge range clubs for our children It is one of the many strengths of Hadleigh Community Primary School that we are able to offer a wide range of extra curricular activities for children to enjoy. Clubs started the week beginning Monday 13th September. Among the after school sessions are Drama, ‘The Gang’, Tennis, Knitting, Recorders and Dance. There are also a huge range of lunchtime clubs available. All children from years 1-6 have at least 3 clubs on offer. What an amazing feat!

We would like to thank all those who gave so generously in the memory of Shelagh Grant, a much loved healer and friend to Hadleigh Healing Society, a donation of £275. To her family and friends our thoughts and condolences.

Film Review with Mat Lucas

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (12A, 113mins, Edgar Wright) Michael Cera heads a young, talented cast in a film heavily influenced by old fashioned video games. Alongside Cera are Alison Pill, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Anna Kendrick. At the helm is British director Edgar Wright, who rose to fame with his two hit British films Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007). Now Wright is back and in charge of a largely American film which is likely to go down a storm in his homeland. Cera plays Scott Pilgrim, a teenager who is trying to make it to the top with his band, Sex Bob-omb. The film follows Scott and his fellow members Stephan Stills (Mark Webber) and Kim Pine (Pill) as they attend a number of gigs, practises and meetings in an attempt to get signed by a record label. Whilst this is only a subnarrative, the various ‘battles’ that the band take part in allow for some of the less subtle, more extravagant computer generated special effects. The main narrative focuses on Scott, his girlfriend Ramona (Winstead) and her ‘baggage’. Although confused at first, Scott soon learns that he must defeat Ramona’s seven evil ex-partners. A thumbs up to Robin D. Cook, Jennifer Euston and Allison Jones who clearly did an excellent job in casting all of the ex-partners, as they come in a variety of shapes, sizes and outfits. Whilst the film is primarily a comedy, there is also room for thrills, romance and drama, with the latter taking centre stage when Scott must come to terms with dating two girls at once. However this film cannot rely solely on its so-so narrative; the visual effects are what really earn Scott Pilgrim vs. the World its stripes. Throughout the film the audience is blessed with clever pop-ups, dazzling animations and extremely clever visual video game references. Without these, it has to be said, the film would simply not exist. There is certainly no proof that Edgar Wright has let this huge sum of money distract him from his work, as this film looks as fresh and original as his previous hits. Personal judgement: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World has more originality than virtually anything so far this year. The bar has been set. Rating: 5/5

October - A rather Special Month for Hollywood in Hadleigh ! Not only will we be having two presentations this month, but due to anticipated demand for seats we have decided to put on an extra showing of our archive films during the afternoon of 8th October.

ARCHIVE FLICKS IN THE SIX Bringing the East Anglian Film Archive to the six counties in the East

FRIDAY 8TH OCTOBER AT 2.30 pm and 7.30 pm IN THE ANSELL CENTRE AN AFTERNOON AND EVENING OF FILM NOSTALGIA!

THE BOYS ARE BACK (12A) FRIDAY 22nd OCTOBER at 7.30 pm The story of this film is unashamedly sentimental, covering how a fast talking, fast moving sports writer becomes a single parent in the most tragic of circumstances. Clive Owen stars as the father to two sons, on one hand allowing them to do thrillingly foolhardy things to keep them amused and happy, but on the other acting completely ineffectively when coping with all the day to day domestic issues. In short he’s a man adrift, fumbling his way around the rules of fatherhood. Inspired by a true story The Boys Are Back is fortunate in welcoming to the screen two impressive young actors - Nicholas McAnulty and George MacKay who play the two siblings - giving this film a strong emotional punch. The acting is superb, the story is fresh and touching and the director Scott Hicks had one goal – honesty; he succeeds at every level! You will find Hollywood in Hadleigh in the Ansell Centre

CONTACTING THE ACC • Call Eve on 827888 • Call Jan on 823413 • Email Jan at jan@dicks.plus.com • Take a look at our website - www.ansellcc.org.uk

We are pleased to welcome Stewart Orr of the East Anglian Film Archive on the 8th October who has been busy researching the Archives for film or film clips on Hadleigh. The presentation will cover:• An Easter Air Display from 1928 featuring Hadleigh • Malting Activities in Hadleigh 1947 • Hadleigh Corn Harvest from 1947 • The Story of Coco Matting 1947 • Rope Making by Hand in Hadleigh 1946 Stewart Orr’s collection covers films or film clips that have been accepted by the EAFA and where copyright has been agreed for commercial showing. Stewart would love everyone to watch carefully during the presentations for the sight of old friends, relations or past work mates – and, if spotted during his presentations, please sing out loudly!! As there has already been a huge interest in Stewart Orr’s presentation we have organised an extra showing of the films at 2.30 pm. As always admission is £3 for adults £2 for children, with a break for refreshments. Please note tickets cannot be booked in advance. This event is part of the Suffolk Digital Cinema Network presentations in and around our region this autumn. Details of all the films to be shown can be found in leaflets available from the library.

Alice the Musical the new HADS Production In November, just a few weeks from now, Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society’s youth production team will be presenting Alice the Musical, with assistance from HADS Adults. This is the truly enjoyable version by Mark and Helen Johnson of Lewis Carroll’s classic story. We promise drama, laughter, music and fun. Here is something for all the family, young or old: comedy scenes, court scenes amazing animal characters, and a truly great score to link everything together. This production marks HADS’s 90th year of bringing amateur dramatics to Hadleigh and the surrounding community. Directed by Niki Seager and co-directed by Ben Warner, with costumes designed by Lesley Doidge, and additional music and dance routines by Niki Seager, this is the strange story of Alice as she enters the odd world of Wonderland and meets the White Rabbit, a Dodo, the Dribbble Twins, the Mad Hatter, a mad Queen, and all the other crazy characters you will remember from the original story. Over 30 youngsters from the Hadleigh area, supported by HADS adults, have been rehearsing since early in the year to put on a show that should prove to be an excellent antidote to the doom and gloom currently filling the news. Tickets are the same price as previous years and are likely to sell quickly as there are only four performances of the show and strict limits on the seating availability at the Town Hall; so don’t rely on buying at the door. Get your tickets in advance from The Idler Bookshop or Walter Wright Accountants. For more information call 01473 824033. Performances will be at the Town Hall, Hadleigh at 7:30pm on Thursday 18th, Friday 19th and Saturday 20th November 2010 with a 2:30pm matinée on Saturday 20th. Tickets priced £7 for Adults and £5 for Seniors and Under 16s are now available from ‘The Idler’ bookshop 37 High Street Hadleigh or the reception desk of Walter Wright Accountants 89 High Street Hadleigh.

Slimming World - Jodie’s Story Jodie’s sister is a glamour model, and when a photographer came around to do a set of photo’s her sister was in glamourous underwear and bikini’s. Jodie was upset that she could not wear these things because of her weight and decided to do something about it. The doctor suggested Slimming World and Jodie went along to the evening group in Hadleigh with her mum as moral support. At a boot sale, they had met a lady who was selling all her large clothes as she had lost weight with Slimming World and they could see how it had worked for her. Being very artistic and loving her drama group activities, losing weight made her feel better – now she loves coming along to the group each week, achieving the little weekly targets of weight loss that she sets herself. Now Jodie has lost 3st 6lb, and has been exercising to help her weight loss. Recently working with a personal trainer to get the right exercise, and finding the horse riding and dancing are now much more energetic! As Jodie says, she is no longer embarrassed about her size, feels better in clothes, and is looking forward to having a bikini of her own soon. Yvonne runs the group at the Guildhall, 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Thursdays where Jodie loves to come along to, each week!

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Another super evening, well it was, if like me, you are interested in fruit growing. Of course everyone knows I am really only interested in growing things to eat - that tells a story doesn’t it? Anyway Andrew Tann, the speaker and third generation of his family to farm the orchards near Marks Tey, turned out to be a real master of his profession and as he said, “could talk all night on the subject” if we wanted him to! He didn’t, but had such an extensive knowledge of his subject that I am sure he could have done; never the less he packed in a huge amount of detail and information on fruit growing from every aspect of variety, climatic and geographical conditions and soil requirements as well as the inevitablbe problems that occur because one or the other or possibly all of the above are against there being a successful crop. Like all farming, to an extent the results are dependant on the weather as us gardeners are all to well aware, remember that hail?! The orchard will be open for an Apple Day on 23rd October and can be found in Aldham near Marks Tey, CO6 3RR, for all you sat-navers. Another reminder to say we do desperately need an outings organiser, the secretary has been doing it up to now but would really appreciate some help - come on some kind soul - it is usually only one coach trip and a car sharing trip per year - please! Our next meeting is 11th October. Ruth Allen 822323

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts The end of September to the beginning of October churches hold their Harvest Festivals, and gardeners review their harvest for the year. There are still the leeks, and winter brassicas to come, but the rest of our crops are over. My harvest this year has been adequate rather than brilliant. I have had enough for my use, but less to give away. In particular the apple crop has been mixed. Some varieties have done very well and others very poorly although all of them flowered well. I think that this was due to cool weather, and a shortage of bees to pollinate the flowers when some of them were in full flower. Why not add a dwarf fruit tree to your garden ? If you like the idea October is the month to get organised. There is no need to stick to the commercial varieties that you can buy in the shops. For example specialised suppliers can provide over 200 different varieties of apple. This year is the 21st anniversary of Apple Day, and locally there is one at Crapes Fruit Farm at Aldham near Colchester CO6 3RR on the 23rd of October where there will be a good number of different varieties on display, and a chance to try and identify that apple that you have inherited without a name. There is also a Suffolk Wildlife one at Redgrave & Lopham Fen on the 10th of October. Finally the tomatoes in the greenhouse will have finished. In my case this means clearing them out to make space for half hardy plants like Abutilon, Miniature Pomegranate, etc which have been stood outside for the Summer, and finding room in the house for plants that would not survive in my greenhouse which is just kept frost free. Weather Records Due to the authors incompetence in mislaying a piece of paper I am afraid I shall have to report on the August & September weather records next month Hints By the end of October we may well have had the first frost, so it is time to think about getting any half hardy plants that you want to keep for next year under cover. It is also a good time to remove dead bedding plants, and have a tidy up. If you have put shading on your greenhouse for the Summer it should now be removed. Dahlias can be left until they have been cut down by the first frost, but it is wise to at least have cuttings of any other half hardy perennials which you grow. October is the month to finish planting bulbs for a Spring display. It is also a very good time for planting trees, shrubs and perennials. The soil is warm enough that new roots will be made to anchor the plants, and ensure a good start when the weather warms up in Spring. John Rye

Hadleigh Local Food An enthusiastic audience enjoyed an entertaining and informative evening promoting Local Food presented by Charles Partridge of Patridge's Farm Shop and Simon Cook.of Smugglers' Puddings. .Charles started by giving a brief outline of his family's history of farming in this area and how they came to open the farm shop. The farm at Layham is very small by today's standard being only 100 acres. He had arranged a display of the various vegetables they are harvesting now and which he had picked that morning. These included cabbages, cauliflowers, beans, leeks, lettuces, beetroot and various squashes. Fruit and vegetables not grown on the farm but sold in the shop are, wherever possible, bought in from local producers. Although not claiming to be an organic farm, chemicals are used very sparingly, weeds are not sprayed and hedgerows are left to provide habitat for wildlife. To pick the vegetables fresh every day for the shop, collecting the bread and mushrooms from Capel means a very early start so that by the time the shop opens at 8.30 Charles has already done half a day's work. Meanwhile Simon was busy preparing vegetables which he had earlier selected from Charles' display. Simon used a fillet of pork and some sausages which had come from one of the pigs which Charles now keeps on the farm. The fillet was rolled in a mixture of herbs to provide a crust and then seared in a frying pan to seal in the juices. It was put in the oven together with the sausages to cook Simon gave explanations and advice at every stage of the proceedings, such as how to chop up the vegetables and still retain all your fingers. To go with these he made a caramelised onion and apple dish and potato cakes. For a pudding an apple tarte tatin.. At the end of the demonstration the audience were invited to taste the results. This they did eagerly and pronounced it all delicious and cleared the plates. This was local food at its best, cooked to a simple recipe which didn't involve hours of preparation . Dear Sir I read with intent, the letter from Dovercourt resident Jill Burkett concerning the “Tesco Saga” in Hadleigh. I have family connections in Dovercourt dating back nearly 100 years and thus feel justified in questioning her findings. One would assume that Ms Burkett is well catered for with regards to her supermarket shopping, bearing in mind that she has a choice of:1 x Morrison Store + petrol station 3 x Co-op Stores (1 just updated and very posh) 1 x Haldanes Stores (just opened) 1 x Lidl Store 1 x Iceland Store But despite this extensive range of services, she still feels compelled to visit Tescos in Clacton, and states that she “likes” them as a company. She doesn’t want one in her own town (or anybody else’s by the sound of it), but she is quite happy to shop with them when she needs to. This is a classic case of “...not on my doorstep...” pure contradiction!! On a further note, I would have thought that as a Dovercourt resident she should be voicing her concerns regarding issues in her own town which urgently need addressing, such as the possible closure of the full time fire station, or the fact that sick patients have to travel to Colchester or Clacton Hospital for treatment, despite millions having been spent on the newly updated Harwich/Dovercourt Hospital. May I politely suggest that she leave “Hadleigh to the local People”, rather than commenting on issues that do not even affect her as she is NOT EVEN A HADLEIGH RESIDENT. Paul Keeble

Dear Sir “A Nice Story” - The recent reburished and restored House, neighbouring the Rose Chapel in George Street Hadleigh, is complete. I would like to say to the owners, well done, with a lot of hard work, and some difficult moments, you have achieved your goal. Credit goes to the skilled craftsmen who made it happen. Russel Budd, Neil Grimsey, and Terry Smith, were the dedicated bunch, who put their skills to work. Its a fine Home, a credit to you all. John Caley

Dear Sir My family have been trying to move to Hadleigh for 18 months, away from an Essex town where you can get anything you want 24/7. We finally moved here 6 weeks ago, and absolutely love it here. I have been following with interest the debate about Tesco, and have this to say. Hadleigh is so unique, you are so lucky, and yes, Mr John Caley, people move here because of its tranquility, and no we haven’t come to the wrong place. If you want to be able to shop at Tesco, you move near one, dont inflict it on Hadleigh, it will kill the town, and those of you that have never lived somewhere that has supermarkets there, you wont realise that it does indeed kill the community. Besides there is a Tesco only 7 miles away at Copdock. I understand that some people cannot drive, and dont want to lug their shopping back on the bus, so can I suggest setting up a car share for those that go to Tesco, to give a lift to others once a week say, that want to go. I for one would be happy to help someone else make the trip, when I go. But Mr Caley, if you want to move into the 21st century, (and we and many others moved here to get away from it) may I suggest that YOU MOVE to somewhere that already suits your needs that you dont want to change, or maybe move into the 21st century yourself and SHOP ONLINE. Nicki Jayo

Dear Sir Passing through the Hadleigh area from time to time on our forays into the UK, we (my wife and I) do most times stop for a quick look, tea and some shopping in this well-preserved English town. Towns like these are one of the many reasons to spend most of our holidays in the UK. Hearing about the Tesco plans I first thought it was a bad joke. But apparently the Tesco people are determined to press 46

"progress" on those unwilling and backward people in Hadleigh who don't understand modern times. Arguments like economic development and employment will undoubtedly be used to convince the local Council to agree to the mutilation of Hadleigh. I do not know how long this sword of Damocles has been hanging over the town, but if it's longer than one month then I wonder why it takes the local councillors so long to unanimously reject this out of hand and ridiculous proposal. From what I have read there are much better sites nearby that will not damage Hadleigh beyond repair and will make us give Hadleigh a wide berth during future visits to the UK. I hope the local Council will decide swiftly and decisively in this case and serve the interests of local people more then those of the shareholders of a huge company. I'll keep checking the Hadleigh website from time to time to see whether sound judgement has prevailed in the beautifull Suffolk town of Hadleigh. Hans Ooms, Holland

Dear Sir The Tesco twins are in town again – letters from The Chairman of Tesco Supporters Group and Mr. Caley with but a single tired theme, any excuse to impugn the integrity of the Hands Off Hadleigh campaign which opposes the building of a supermarket on the Brett Works Site. The Chairman’s comments seem to spring from a fanciful imagination, clutching at various straws in his invention of new levels of insinuation over the strength of the HOH protest. He appears to invest the leaders of the campaign with extraordinary powers of coercion and manipulation (and we thought we had hidden the bullwhips and thumbscrews!). There have been no anti-Tesco petitions – the survey was open-ended and available for all to record views for or against a supermarket. Obviously Mr. Smith did not complete one. Since he counts members in his group from local villages and Ipswich, his point on “outsiders” is hardly relevant. It is sad that the Chairman has to resort to letters such as this to deflect from the imbalance between HOH coverage and so seek to bolster belief in his own waning support. Mr. Caley’s letter is gratuitously offensive and warrants an apology for applying outrageous assessments to a large group of people whose only faults are that they hold views at variance with his own and wish to make them known. He appears not to understand the reasons for the HOH stance, or the chaos that could ensue if the building were to be allowed. But what have we here? Siding with the enemy – an alternative suggestion! However, watch my lips – WE DO NOT NEED A SUPERMARKET OF THE SIZE PROPOSED, ESPECIALLY ON THE BRETT WORKS SITE. The calculated shortfall in Hadleigh retail provision is 900 sq m, less than half of the Tesco application (see Babergh Retail Survey) which does not warrant a site like Brett Works. I commend to both correspondents the letter from C. Scott Fox of Layham (an outsider?) (on the same page, HCN last month) as an example of pros and cons expressed succinctly. D. A. Parker

Dear Sir Further to Joan Meredith's letter last month, I along with many other customers are furious with the decision to close the Health Suite at Hadleigh Pool. The facilty was wonderful especially for arthritis sufferers like me. The sauna was so relaxing and the jacuzzi just melted away aches and pains. We now have little to show for all the money spent. The new reception area would fit a town hall and the reception desk is big enough for Henry VIII. The changing area is huge but has two small showers that each take two people but for large ladies like me it's a bit like dancing cheek-to-cheek. What have we gained - not a lot. It's bigger and brighter but we have lost the most needed facilities. I have noticed in the last few days that attendances have dropped, I wonder why? Jeanette Bowtell, Whatfield

Dear Sir I would like to thank the kind gentleman who swept me off the pavement when I fell over on 2 September. The gentlemen checked me over and escorted me to Hadleigh Health Centre. Thank you to Dr Flather and Nurse Daniels for all their help and assistance. A friend Diana, took me home, helped me pack and then drove me all the way to Ipswich to my daughters. Hadleigh is indeed a wonderful community, with so many kind and caring people. I am honoured to live here. Joan Rampling

Last day of term was a great success. We were lucky having the sun shining, so the children were able to play in the garden and enjoy the bouncy castle. All the children had fun, and was a brilliant way to end the term off. We would like to say good bye to all the children who have left us to start nursery in September and wish them all luck. Also we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped with the smooth running of the day, and a thank you to all the parents and their familys who have supported us during the year. If you wish to see the photos from the day and past events please visit our website. Unfortunately the Hadleigh community playgroup new building which is going up in Calais street has been delayed due to vandalism on the site. Barbergh have involved the police and have discussed employing a night watchman to try and prevent any further vandalism. Because of this set back the new building will not be opening on 6th September as planned. We are hoping the new building will be ready by the end of September. But do not despair, the playgroup will still be opening at the beginning of term at the Scout hall until the new building is ready for us to move in. Places are still available, we will be offering full day care. The opening times will be Monday till Friday from 9 am till 15:45. The sessions available and prices are as followed... Option 1 = 9 am till 12 noon. Price £7.50 or funded session Option 2 = 9 am till 12:45 . Price £10 or funded session plus £2.50 Option 3 = 9 am till 15:45 . Beaumont CP school The new School year started on the 1st of September . Pupil numbers at their highest since the school opened in 2003. Beaumont has only a few places left in Years 4,5 & 6 with all other year groups and the Nursery full. There were fewer new faces at the start of term but we welcome Matthew Shinn who has taken up the post of deputy Headteacher. Matthew was previously Deputy Headteacher at De Vere Primary School in Essex. He will be teaching the Year 6 children. The staff at Beaumont were treated to tea and cakes by the School Governors on the 9th of September. It gave everyone an opportunity to catch up after the Summer break and revealed some unknown governor talents for cupcake making!. During the holidays Suffolk County Council grounds department took the first steps in establishing a new environmental area within the school gardens. An area of shrubs was cleared and the chipping used to make new ground coverings. The children have elected members of each class to form a ‘Green Team’ who will lead the school in developing the area as an outdoor learning space. It is hoped that an environment can be created that will encourage minibeasts and birds to take up residence. The area will also be used by the school’s very popular garden club who have spent the Summer working on the School’s allotment in Hadleigh. The children are collecting ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers from Morrisons supermarket which can be exchanged for seeds and gardening equipment. If you have spare vouchers we would be very grateful for any extras. Last year through the scheme we were able to order eight sets child sized of gardening tools.

Greener Hadleigh Exhibition When you hear the words “climate change” do you think “there is nothing I can do about that and it won't happen for years to come?” OR Do you think that it would make a difference if everyone did a little to reduce carbon emissions for our children and grandchildren? OR Have you just received a fuel bill and wonder how it can be reduced.? Earlier this year a Steering Committee was set up to promote a Greener Hadleigh in support of the County Council's Greenest County Campaign. There is a great deal of information, sometimes confusing, regarding available ways of reducing carbon emissions. An Exhibition has been arranged at which a number of companies and organizations will demonstrate how this can be done by reducing power consumption and waste This is being held on Saturday, October 9th at the Ansell Centre, Market Place, Hadleigh from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be available. Admission is Free For further information contact Jane Haylock e-mail jane@theidler.plus.com 01473 827752

Hadleigh Carpet Bowls...Competitors The Peggy Brooks Trophy-2010 competition took place on Sunday 12th September at the Nayland village hall where four of our members, Joyce, Jackie, Trevor and Peter went along with 19 other teams from Essex and Suffolk to compete for the honour of winning this trophy. It was a very hard fought contest but the Hadleigh players gave a first class performance and came out top with winning all games with a maximum of 33 points and only 10 against, West Bergholt being a close second. This is the very first time in its history that this competition has been won by a Suffolk team so congratulations to our four members and long may they represent and play for the Hadleigh club.

The curtain came down on the club’s Bicentenary season in style when Hadleigh played Cross Arrows CC at the Nursery Ground, Lord’s on Saturday September 11. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the 100-strong party of players, families and supporters, who travelled down to London on two coaches. Despite the poor forecast, the weather was kind. Cross Arrows batted first on the small but magnificently kept ground that sits under the shadow of the Media Centre and in sight of the famous old pavilion. Hadleigh’s bowlers acquitted themselves well, but the quality of the Cross Arrows batting befitted the surroundings, and they reached 304-6 from their 50 overs. In reply Hadleigh did not let the occasion get the better of them, but several batsmen got themselves out after promising starts. Rob Smyth top-scored with 49 as Hadleigh were all out for 175. While the players were treated to first-class facilities, many supporters took the Lord’s tour and made the most of having the world’s most famous cricket ground to themselves. It was the perfect end to an unforgettable season. The 1st XI finished in mid-table in Two Counties Division 2 – a great effort given the predicted struggle against relegation – the 2nd XI won promotion to Division 4 and the Sunday XI finished 5th in Hunts County Bats Division 2. The club’s run on Sky Sports ‘Clublife’ series concluded with a feature on the triangular Twenty20 tournament at Teddington (defeat in the deciding game to Workington made it five losses out of six in the series!), but there has been no doubt the club has been shown in the best possible light and it has generated an unprecedented ‘feelgood factor’. We owe a huge debt of thanks to Vice-Chairman Dave Mann who made the original application and liaised between the producers and the club throughout the season. Here’s to the 250th anniversary in 2029!

Hadleigh under 11's enjoyed their first home friendly on Satuday 4th September when they welcomed St John's to Hadleigh High School. The first game was well contested in the 1st half, with Hadleigh just having the advantage. However, in the 2nd half Hadleigh upped their game and went on to be worthy 2-0 winners. Goal scorers - Alex and Finley. The second game was also very evenly contested with both teams being very committed and having many attempts at goal. Final score 1-1. Goal scorer - Mikey.

South Suffolk Leisure (SSL) wishes to appoint two new community trustees to its board of trustees. SSL has been operating successfully since April 2006 and to help build on this success, we are seeking applications from community representatives who have an interest in leisure activities and wish to contribute to the development of this charitable organisation. Experience in Finance, Marketing or PR would be an advantage. Further details about SSL and an application form can be found on our website at www.ssleisure.co.uk.

The countryside looks beautiful decked out in its autumnal colours and we are lucky to be part of that landscape. There is so much misery and deprivation in the world with floods, earthquakes, mud slides and fires we must count our blessings. We think our lives are tough at times but it is tougher still if you have only the clothes you stand up in and no home. All this sadness in the world has a devastating effect on some people. They feel helpless and it makes their problems seem even bigger. There is very little ‘good’ news in newspapers these days. Do not allow yourselves to become overwhelmed by bad news. We understand how this effects you. There is always someone to listen and understand how you are feeling amongst our qualified healers. We are there to help. If you want to share your worries contact us on 01473 823282 or www.hadleighhealingsociety.org

For an informal chat please contact Chris Moss, Board Chairman, on 01787 377374 Closing date for applications: 30th October 2010

Wonderwall Campaign Highlights Hadleigh Thoughts “Peaceful”, “community spirit” and “lovely scenery!” were just some of the many comments which were posted onto a unique Wonderwall last month, as part of a new campaign which has been launched by Ipswich Building Society to find out what we think about Suffolk. The Wonderwall campaign visited Hadleigh as part of Hadfest on the 29th August, and Society staff were on hand to speak to visitors and passers-by, finding out what encourages them to live and work in Suffolk, and what they love about the area. Over 60 comments were added to the 8ft x 6.5ft wall throughout the day, with many praising the county’s rural community and friendly people. Visitors were also given the opportunity to enter a fun treasure hunt to find Society mascot Pound the Hound’s bone. The treasure map was on the other side of the Wonderwall, and the winning entrant will win a holiday of their choice in Suffolk worth up to £1,000. Chloe Brown, Ipswich Building Society, assistant branch manager said: “We value local opinion and we are pleased that so many people told us what they really think of our county. It has been a great way to get to know our local community.” For people who were unable to see the Wonderwall when it reached Hadleigh, an online Wonderwall has been created at www.facebook.com/SuffolkWonderwall and a You Tube site at www.youtube.com/user/SuffolkWonderwall. The Wonderwall survey results will be published later in the year and shared with key organisations locally including Choose Suffolk.

Hadleigh Under 9’s v Trimley Red Devils 11th September 2010 Hadleigh were at home again in what was a very exciting match. Hadleigh were a formidable force that day, keeping most of the possession within Trimley's half. But when the opposition did break through there was strong and dependable defending from both Ellis and Jake Philips returning the ball to our strikers. Noticeable play from Max who had many attempts at goal, hitting the wood work on a few occasions and scoring two. Thomas also scored two cracking goals and Ewan scoring 1. Must also mention both Travis and Marcus who’s shots were only just wide. Final score Hadleigh 5 - Trimley Red Devils 0. The second team kept the Hadleigh supporters riveted. The match was at an extremely fast pace, both Hadleigh and Trimley were evenly matched with the ball zooming from one end of the pitch to the other. A penalty was awarded to Hadleigh which James Hughes gave their keeper little chance of stopping. The second half saw excellent passing skills by our players. James Smith defending was fantastic , Nat, George and Kieran had several attempts at goal which were either saved by Trimly or just a few inches wide of the goal. Trimley did pull the match back, and scored another in the final few seconds. Final score Hadleigh 1 - Trimley Red Devils 2. Man of the match awards were Max for the first match and James Hughes for the second. Well done Hadleigh !!

Hadleigh Utd Under 13’s Here we go into the new season with one win under our belts so far. We have played 3 games with the following results, 4th Sept - Claydon 2 - Hadleigh 1 11th Sept - Boxford 0 - Hadleigh 4 18th Sept - Hadleigh 3 - Chantry Grasshoppers 6 Well done boys, you are making a great start to the new season. As winners of the under 12’s division last season, we have now moved up a division, so the boys will be pulling out all the stops to ensure that each and every game is a thrilling experience, in particular for the army of spectators which accompany the team on every match day. Although some parents can hardly bear to watch as the tension is unbearable sometimes. We always appreciate any fans coming along to watch, our kick offs are at 10.30am. Please see the Suffolk South Youth League website for any further information. Why not show your support in other ways and join our facebook page, where you can leave messages of support for the team and find out our scores. Our next game is 25th Sept when we are away to East Bergholt, then into October, on the 9th, we are away to Whitton Sports Centre. Following our fundraising efforts last season, each player now has their own kit bag, along with their own football, and new drinks bottle (wonder how long it will be before they’re lost). The boys also now have a warm coat for winter, and a sweatshirt proudly sponsored by local band Skapamaster. Thanks to every one who has helped us to raise those much needed funds.

Hadleigh Goldstar Athletic Football Club (Sponsored by Taylor & Sons: Poperty Agents 01473 828280) After a pre-season of a number of players deciding to ply their trade elsewhere, and the arrival of 15 new players, the season finally kicked off with a couple of late friendlies. These being used to access the level of the new players and to try and integrate these with the old. Not always appreciated by all, but the only way to build a new team. The match results that were of no significance to the management team were both losses 1-4 and 1-5. however they gave a good indication to the new players what was required of them and some much needed match practice for others. Some apprehension was going through the rank and file of those who have shown their commitment to the club from last season before the we kicked off the first league game on Sunday 5th September. This was played at home to Wickham Market with a very entertaining 0-0 draw the result. Matt Bayly having a particular good game in centre midfield. It was nice to see our old friend "Biffen" on the sidelines once again, giving the team his full backing. After a bye in the County Cup on the 12th we went to play the Man on the Moon on the 19th. But after getting changed and ready for play their Manager announced they could only master 5 or 6 players and was calling the game off. Not what we wanted to hear from such a well established club. Fixtures for October are :- 3rd Mendlesham Albion (H), 10th Trowel & Hammer (A), AFC Maidenhall (H), 24th GB Seagulls (A), 31st Chantry Blues (H), and 7th Nov Clapgate Lane Con Club (A).

Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group and Toppesfield Ltd. www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh continued their Ridgeons League fixtures with a home match against Great Yarmouth. The early stages of the match belonged to Hadleigh, but they missed chances and the Bloaters took full advantage. The visitors scored four goals with Hadleigh scoring just once through Ben Deacon. The next match was another home game with Brantham at the Millfield. A header by Kris Rose in the first half was enough to give Hadleigh a narrow victory, which would have been more decisive but for a penalty kick which was missed in the second half with Brantham’s keeper making a great save. An FA Vase match against Yaxley was very eventful with Yaxley arriving late as their bus broke down on its was from Peterborough to the Millfield. The game started an hour late, but it was a good contest with Duane Wright scoring for Hadleigh in the first half. This turned out to be the only goal of the game as Hadleigh defended confidently in a thrilling second period. A trip to Newmarket in a league match saw Hadleigh win by four goals to one with a fine display. Craig Payne and Simon Hyde scored in the first half with Ben Deacon netting two more well taken goals after the interval as Hadleigh dominated. The return match at Brantham took place on a wet night with Hadleigh completing the double by winning three goals to one. Ben Deacon opened the scoring in the first half, then Brantham levelled in the second period before Kris Rose scored twice. Another FA Vase match resulted in a three goal win at Swaffham. Ben Deacon scored either side of the interval, with Ollie Canfer also on target in the first half. A harder match awaits in the next round at Gorleston on Saturday, 2nd October. Our Ridgeons Youth Team won by four goals to two away at Witham. Patrick Armstrong scored two with Josh Carracio and Mallardo on target. They also came from two down to earn a draw at home to Witham with Patrick Armstrong and Luke Wilding on target. An FA Youth Cup match at Histon was lost by five goals to one with Patrick Armstrong scoring for Hadleigh. The Reserves gained a good draw at Heybridge as Jason Curtis equalised in the second period. A Suffolk Cup match at home was lost by three goals to one after Paul Hart scored first to put Hadleigh in front. A home league match against Sudbury Reserves saw Hadleigh Reserves win by three goals to two. Jamie Cowan scored along with Josh Mayhew and Matt Chinnery.Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Roger Rush, S. Brown and Barry Stokes. Terry Adams

Haverhill U13 v Hadleigh U13 Hadleigh U13s first game of the season was a match against a spirited Haverhill side who threatened a try straight from the kick-off only for their pacy winger to be adjudged to have put a foot in touch just before scoring. However Hadleigh responded well and gradually worked their way into the match - forwards competing with the strong Haverhill pack, and backs stretching the defence wide. Fly-half Dawson directed the attacks and eventually broke through to score a brilliant solo try. Hadleigh then got into their stride and played some fantastic rugby with the pack driving forward and off-loading in the tackle with fantastic workrate and support play. The backs were also moving the ball fast through their hands and finding space on the outside, resulting in further tries from Dawson, Southgate-Ash 2, Watts 2, Disney-Wiltshire 2, Andrew Bray, Patrick Bray and Charlie Dunn. verhill team refused to give up and Hadleigh’s defence had to be strong to hold out- only being breached once for a converted try. Final Score: Haverhill 7 Hadleigh 77.

At the beginning of May; 35 teams were divided into 5 Summer Leagues and the winners of each league qualified for the 2010 summer league finals to be played at Needham Market on the 29th August. Hadleigh being the winners of Group A qualified and turned up with their supporters hoping that this year they would return home as the champions, but this was not to be. Starting at 11am, our team consisting of Joan , Nora, Kath and Angie played Belstead who immediately took an early lead of 8-0 but then our ladies not to be out done produced a fantastic comeback to level the score at 10-10 after nine ends. What a nail biter this turned out to be but Belstead hit back to take the game at12-11, a great shame as our team fought so hard. Regrettfully our other teams were also beaten and came away with 25+ shots with the winners Kelsale building up a massive score of 56+ shots and therefore deserving to be the champions and take home the trophy. However, it was a great day meeting all of the other competitors and thoroughy enjoyed by one and all as will be seen by the smiles of our team on the attached photograph. We would still like to see more new faces at the club and give them a warm welcome with full instructions on this enjoyable game should it be required. We play on Mondays and Thursdays at Hadleigh Primary School and can arrange shared transport for the away matches should it be required. Please contact Russell at 01473 311653 for further information.

Is it Love? Why do we toil for money, desire for life’s glory and do not feel content? Why do we want to acquire so much, crave for things that do not last and still cry out with emptiness? What is it in this life that we all struggle to achieve, yet the world can never fulfil? What is it in our hearts? Is the mystery what we long for? What is it that really matters? Is the answer deep beneath our souls?
