Strictly winner at Hadleigh Dinner There will be something of the glamour of the glitterball at Hadleigh Cricket Club’s End of Season dinner this year. The club has announced that the guest speaker at the special event in October will be Mark Ramprakash, the former England Test batsman who won BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2006. Ramprakash played 52 Test matches between 1991-2002, and during his career became one of the most prolific run-scorers in English county cricket. He is one of only 25 players in cricket history to score 100 first-class centuries, and achieved the remarkable feat of averaging over 100 in successive seasons for Surrey. He is widely regarded as the most talented English batsman of his generation, and is now the England cricket team’s batting coach. ‘Ramps’ came to national prominence when he won Strictly with his partner Karen Hardy, following Darren Gough as the second cricketer to win the show and starring in many Strictly tours and TV specials since. “I am

delighted to welcome Mark Ramprakash to Hadleigh for what promises to be a fantastic evening”, said the club’s Chairman David Mann. “Ramps is an England cricket legend as well as a Strictly star, so there will be something for everyone! This has been a very special year at Hadleigh Cricket Club, with the completion of Phase 1 of our pavilion extension project, and this event will be a celebration of what we have achieved both on and off the pitch.” “We hope that through the success of this event we can raise vital funds for Phase 2 of our pavilion extension project, which includes the building of a new bar, installation of a heating and cooling system, new windows and doors, a disabled ramp and perimeter paving,” said Mann. The dinner will take place on Saturday October 14th in a specially erected heated marquee at the club’s Friars Road ground. The evening will also include an auction, prize-giving and after-dinner dancing. Tickets priced £50 are available, or tables of ten can be booked at £450 each, from promoter Simon Gladwell: simon.gladwell@copdockmill.co.uk Tel: 07801 928911 The club would also be delighted to receive offers of donations of auction prizes from local companies and individuals.

We need teams of people to provide a description of your area, including photos, highlighting the opportunities and threats in your neighbourhood. The areas are: 1. High Street Areas. 2. North East, Anne Beaumont Way, Friars Rd, Gallows Hill and all streets within this triangle. 3. Boswell Lane South, Calais St, Pykenham and the Bradfields. 4. Oxford Dr development, Red Hill Rd, and Malyon Rd to boundary of Industrial Estate. 5. Angel St south side, Magdalen Rd, Taylor Rd south and The Green. 6. Pause For Thought As I write this the harvest has just started. I saw a combine hard at work cutting barley. I shared this with someone as we walked to church and we both agreed it was an early harvest. Harvest always makes me thankful and reminds me of promises given by God in the Bible. After the great flood Noah, his family and the animals were in the ark. When the flood waters had subsided, they were able to leave the ark and Noah gave thanks to God for keeping them safe. God promised, “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” Genesis 8:23 God promised different weathers and seasons so that there would be a harvest. He has kept his promise as evidenced by the combine at work and the shelves piled high with food at the supermarket. Let’s all give thanks to God for providing us with food every day. Lydia Ball

Brett Valley Lodge tour the ‘Apache’ During the months that Brett Valley do not hold a regular meeting a ‘Lodge Supper’ is held as a social night out for the lodge members, their families and guests. On June 30th organiser of our supper meetings, Alan Fosker together with Robbie Silk the Station Staff Officer arranged a superb evening for us all at the Wattisham Air Base. After a short social drink in the Officers Mess we dined in fine style on an excellent selection of curries with all the usual ‘trimmings’ followed by cheesecake and strawberries. We then all jumped into our vehicles and drove ‘in convoy’ across the airfield to a hanger which housed the famous ‘Apache’ attack helicopter, where waiting to meet us was one of the pilots who then proceeded to explain the incredible capabilities of this machine. The technology in this helicopter is almost beyond belief, in fact climbing up to look in the pilots seat and viewing the amount of buttons, controls and levers we was surprised to learn it only takes three years to learn to fly this amazing machine. After a few photos and our thanks to the pilot we visited the Museum on the base which houses a most interesting collection of artifacts and photos and a visit to the museum is highly recommended, it is open on the first Sunday of the month, April to October, they would be very pleased to see you, full details can be found at www.wattishamstationheritage.org. Brett Valley Lodge meet and dine at The Town Hall, Hadleigh on the fourth friday in September, November, January, March and May www.brettvalley.org.uk

River Stour Trust Coracle Regatta Saturday 5 August 2017 at Bures Recreation Ground This event is held annually usually on the first Saturday in August. This event has a fancy name but is in fact a FREE, low-key, laid back, fun afternoon. Organised by coracle owners with support from the River Stour Trust to offer everyone an opportunity to try to handle one of these unusual craft. The ‘coraclers’ not only share their craft but spend time explaining the best way of moving along the river. If you own a coracle but would prefer not to share it just bring it along and join in the fun. People of all ages can have a go and some get wet! Carefully stored at Hadleigh Archive is a royal seal dating from 1558 the shows King The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian Philip and Queen Mary of England. From a Issue 41 August - September 2017 Price £3 distance, the wax seal looks like a brown disc but up close, details of the royal couple can be seen as they confirm ownership of a house and lands in Bridge Street. All old documents carried seals but owing to rough handling over the centuries, many have become broken. However, for this particular property not only has the seal survived from the 16th century but also the parchment document. This issue’s front cover feature brings their majesties into focus on this curious piece of Hadleigh’s history. Today’s style of newspaper headlines ‘Land owner accused of high treason: king confiscates Hadleigh farm’ suit the story from the 17th century of Sir Robert Peyton and his acquisition of lands west of Benton Street. It was Millie Goulbourn of Hadleigh who put me on to this when she came across a location called Hanging Hills. (DIY enthusiasts will remember the site as a builders merchant.) The property is traced through the Raven family of Hadleigh to Sir Robert, who was described by his contemporaries as an unruly person, often inebriated and always spoiling for a fight. A log book of just 25 pages has turned up so that the story of the British School in Market Place for non-denominational teaching can be completed. In Issues 15 to 17, extracts were made from a log book dating 1871 to 1899 and now for years 1899 to 1901 come tales of pupil absenteeism when circuses came to town; school holidays to honour events of the Second Boer War and the reason why the school eventually ceased. The records were made in the clear handwriting of headmaster Edwin Ringer, a sample of which is illustrated. The series on street names has reached letters R to T with 22 entries, including churchmen, a councillor and a cycle shop owner. If you were to name any future streets in Hadleigh, whose name would you select to be forever remembered in this way? May I suggest Hadleigh’s two historians, Revd Hugh Pigot and W.A.B Jones. Two photographs sent in by readers, Roger Kennell and Kelvin Avis, appear in the occasional series ‘Lost Buildings’ as they show the watermill in Bridge Street, which has already featured in Special Edition No.2 The river Brett at Hadleigh (2012). That part of the town must have been dominated by the mill’s exceedingly tall chimney until its demolition in 1956. Your letters, pictures and memories of Hadleigh in the recent past and articles relevant to the history of the town and its surrounding countryside are most welcome. Please contact Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG. (01449 740673) Available at Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, price £3.

St Mary’s Focus Group Members were invited to attend one of several meetings which are organised by the Church with the view to discovering what members of the community would like to see happen to this iconic building in the future. Those who attended not only heard about the plans and hopes for this familiar Hadleigh landmark but also had the opportunity to voice their opinions. An interesting, informative morning for both organisers and visitors alike. The Angel Lunch bunchers visited this well-known watering hole in Lavenham for a summer lunch. It was their first meal there since the current owner, John Raynes, took over in February 2017. He has brought the business back to a traditional style pub by serving tasty pub food in a friendly unpretentious atmosphere. Being a large group, Fidelis diners pre-ordered and food choices varied from a sandwich to a cooked meal. All were happy with their selection especially the delicious desserts. With much in the news there was no shortage of conversation that lunchtime. Ascot, Picnic & Agm Ladies came dressed for Ladies’ Day at Ascot and many sported elegant hats too. Barbara Faulkner, who was senior steward, presided over the ‘course’ and racing stallions. With members as jockeys, a series of noisy races took place punctuated only by Barbara’s commentary and additional historical details about Ascot itself. The Queen’s Gold Cup was presented to Kay Whittle’s table who were worthy winners. Once the winnings had been paid out race goers were able to enjoy a boxed picnic and a well-earned cup of tea, delicately prepared and served by Helen and Charlotte of Angel Delights. The more serious business of the AGM followed, with reports by Chairwoman Liz Wilson, Treasurer Carole Burne and Barbara Faulkner Publicity & Programme Organiser Jan Devey. On behalf of the members, Louise Chambury gave a vote of thanks to the Committee for their hard work throughout the year. The group now looks forward to an interesting programme of speakers and events as it embarks upon its thirteenth year. JD

Hadleigh’s Hidden Gem You may think it’s hard to hide a place like Priory Hall in Hadleigh. How can it be a hidden gem? It sits in 22 acres, has a lake, orchards, lawns and a large banqueting hall rebuilt from its original Tudor origins, with minstrels’ gallery and attached walled garden. But it remains a secret to many people in Hadleigh and surrounding villages. We meet people who’ve driven past Priory Hall in Benton Street for years and have no idea what’s behind the wall. Luxury venue. Weddings started here almost by accident 25 years ago. They quickly built up and as a result the grounds were redesigned for them. Now brides and grooms from as far as Scotland and the Netherlands come to Hadleigh to make Priory Hall theirs for the day. That’s what we’re really good at. We give couples the luxury infrastructure and they add their own touches to make it a day for and about them. And we give them access over three days, so no scrabbling to set up or clear up. We recommend suppliers but we don’t insist on them. We do all we can to make dreams come true. Anniversary visits. We’ve had live goldfish on the tables, acrobats dangling from helium balloons, picnics on the lawn and art in the garden. There have been fly pasts, fire eaters and even a bride who arrived by helicopter wearing wellies. No two weddings are ever the same. That’s what makes it fun. They can be big and impressive or small and intimate. It doesn’t matter as long as it’s what the bride and groom want. We offer free anniversary visits so you can enjoy your memories back where they happened. Added extras. We’ve been running weddings at Priory Hall for a long time. We’re really lucky to have a place that’s perfect for a wedding day and we hope we add the extras that help people use it to the full, just as they always wanted. But there’s only one way to find out. Check out the website www.prioryhall.com - and then get in touch to arrange a visit. It’s impossible to describe Priory Hall; you really do have to see it. 01473 823185 07711 321907 cyndy.hilton@prioryhall.com

Hadleigh Hall in the Suffolk market town of Hadleigh has become the 29th care home under the ownership of Kingsley Healthcare Group. The 54-bed home in Friars Road, on the edge of Hadleigh, will eventually create employment for more than 50 people. A substantial six-figure sum has been spent on refurbishing the 19th century property ahead of opening. Kingsley’s operations director Debbie McGovern said: “We fell in love with the building as soon as we saw it. This is a wonderful location to offer 24-hour short and long-term nursing, residential and dementia care. “We have wonderful landscaped gardens and excellent views across rolling Suffolk countryside, and yet we are just on the edge of Hadleigh and only a short drive away from Ipswich and Sudbury.” She stressed that it was a completely fresh start for the home under the new ownership of a renowned national provider. She said: “As a company we are passionate in our belief that older people should have the best possible quality of life. Providing first class care will be at the heart of everything we do at Hadleigh Hall. “Our staff treat residents as they would their own family and at all times respect the fact they are individuals with their own needs and preferences. “Our interest in our residents is genuine; we learn from listening, engaging and responding to feedback. Above all else, Hadleigh Hall is our residents’ home.” Operations manager Helen Gosling, who led the development of Kingsley’s acclaimed person-centred approach to dementia care, called WINGS, said: “We are managing Hadleigh Hall in a very special way in that the focus of every member of staff, whatever their job, will be the social needs of the residents.” She said in home manager, Emma Beckett, they had selected someone with vast experience in the care sector and, importantly, someone who shared Kingsley’s values. The home is currently recruiting for a range of positions including support workers and domestics. Kingsley was established in 1999 by Daya Thayan and his wife Sumi with the purchase of their first care home in Lowestoft. Since then the family owned business has grown into a national provider employing 1,600 people and caring for more than 1,100 residents. The company passed an important milestone last summer when staff moved into their new head office, Kingsley House, in the centre of Lowestoft. While planning continued national growth Mr Thayan insists on retaining Kingsley’s family values. “Every home we run must be of a standard that would fitting for my own parents,” he said. News from St. Mary’s Primary We have been very busy during the last few weeks! Our sports day was a huge success and we are very proud of how much effort the children put into every event. We had some lovely comments from parents about how much the children supported and cheered each other along. Well done Blue team! Our Christian Value for this term is respect. Year 1 did a wonderful assembly to show this value by performing ‘The lion inside’. We learnt all about how important it is to respect others. Fantastic singing and dancing everyone! Year 1 have also been learning all about castles this term and have been busy organising a medieval banquet! They made oat cakes which were very delicious and held jousting competitions with shields and swords. Recently, Year 1 and 2 enjoyed a day out at the church looking at the stained glass windows. They related the pictures to Bible stories they knew and were really inspired by the colours and patterns. They also learnt all about important people in Hadleigh. Thank you to everyone involved in making the day a lovely experience for the children. KS1 enjoyed their trip to Clacton seaside this month. The weather was lovely and they made sandcastles and played in the park. Back in school, the children created some beautiful artwork inspired by their visit. Year 2 made deck chairs as part of their design and technology and nursery painted some pictures of things they saw during the trip. This term Reception class held their class assembly for the school and parents to see. They retold the story of Elmer and enjoyed animal dancing with rainbow scarves. We learnt that we are unique and that we should celebrate all the ways that we are different. Great acting everyone! Year 2 were visited by Ipswich Building Society who spent the day organising lots of fun activities with the children. The children said they were very inspired by their day and have learnt all about looking after, saving and spending money this month. This was a very valuable experience for the children, thank you to all the adults who organised this.

Ethiopia has one of the lowest patient to optometrist ratio in the world, with fewer than three qualified optometrists per million! The team at D J Dunstone in Hadleigh are helping Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) to raise money to train and support optometry students and staff at Hawassa University in Ethiopia, to help bring local access to eye tests. Holly Coleman, one of the optometrists at D J Dunstone, spent two weeks examining sight in Ethiopia during May 2017. There she worked with local optometrist Mulugeta and has seen first-hand the Kate Rhodes, Optometric Assistant need for eye care and the at D J Dunstone difference VAO can make with our help. Why Ethiopia? Ethiopia is a rapidly developing country, which is slowly building its healthcare facilities and access to quality and affordable eye care services is scarce. It has a population of almost 100 million people scattered across remote, often hard to reach areas. Why training? VAO believes that if a country is to have sustainable eye care services, it must have skilled staff to do the job. The optometry students will work alongside UK Professional Volunteers on outreach programmes to receive training to improve their practical skills. What you can do? Please consider calling into the Practice at 3 Queen Street and donate £1 to VAO towards this campaign. For the month of August 2017 each person making a donation will be invited to put their name into a draw. The winner will receive a £75 voucher to spend at D J Dunstone on goods or services. You are also welcome to donate any used spectacles which will be forwarded to VAO. What can the money we raise do? £100 can pay for a community outreach team to see 500 people. £300 could pay training costs for two weeks for a student or faculty member. £9950 could train and support 20 optometry students and 12 faculty staff at Hawassa University College of Health and Medical Sciences to help bring local access to eye tests and glasses to 1.2 million people over the next 20 years. Prize draw: The draw will take place at 5pm on 31 August. We will inform you of the amount raised through these pages and on our website dunstoneinsight.com. The website has information about the Practice team and the services we offer and also has further information regarding the current VAO campaign. We are most fortunate to have access to local high quality eye care in Suffolk. Please contact us on 01473 823755 if you have any questions or would like to make an eye examination appointment. You are welcome call in to view our up-to-date range of spectacle frames and sunglasses (prescription and nonprescription). Our opening times are Monday – Friday 9-1 & 2-5 and also Tuesday evenings until 8pm. We have recently refitted the upstairs showroom and so you could take the opportunity to have a look while calling in to make your £1 charity donation!

August Update! Our practitioners here at Hadleigh Physiotherapy have had a very busy few months out of work from cycling up and climbing mountains to swimming in open waters and they certainly don’t like to make it too easy for themselves! As you would know from last month’s edition of the Hadleigh Community News and Facebook, Will spent the last week of June cycling across the Dolomites in Italy with our mascot Maximus making sure spirits were kept high throughout the ride. We offer Will a huge congratulations for finishing the gruelling Maratona Dolomites race on Sunday 2nd July in an amazing time. On the 8th of July our Sports Masseuse Kerry, took on a challenge of epic proportions and in the dark too! Kerry and Maximus survived the gale force winds, cold conditions and torrential rain of Ben Nevis and whilst they were unable to summit, they reached a staggering 903 metres before visibility was zero and the organisers stopped further hiking. Well done Kerry who managed to raise a great amount of money for the Alzheimer’s Society. If you would like to sponsor her post-event then please visit her link at Just Giving: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kerrywheeler3 Other news for Kerry is that she will be offering from August onwards, both Swedish and Sports Massage appointments at our Martlesham practice on a Tuesday and Thursday morning. On a more community focussed subject, we met with the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance on the 7th of July so that we could work towards becoming a more Dementia Friendly practice. The session was very informative and we look forward to further training later in the year.

James Cartlidge writes

G.J. WATTS

Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I was very honoured to be appointed a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to the Ministerial team at the Department of Health. Distilled, the role of PPS is basically to act as a conduit between a government department and parliamentary colleagues. In practice this means that I will be supporting the health ministers in their day-to-day work by attending debates, statements and urgent questions, and also ensuring that they are aware of the feeling in the House of Commons and concerns individual MPs may have. If individual members are concerned about certain matters either locally or nationally, or would like assistance in gaining attention for a particular campaign, it is the role of the PPS to enable that communication. For regular watchers of the Parliament channel – and I know there are some – the PPS usually sits behind the Minister they are supporting and can often be seen scampering across the green benches to send or receive notes to and from Departmental officials seated near the Speaker’s chair. A PPS is an unpaid role, though intriguingly we are classed as being on the Government ‘payroll’. Commentators sometimes use the phrase ‘payroll vote’ which refers to all Ministers, Whips and PPSs who are in one way or another part of the Government (as opposed to ‘backbenchers’). I am delighted to have been assigned to the Department of Health because there is almost no bigger issue than the future of healthcare in the UK. I am looking forward to getting more involved in this area and developing a greater understanding about the challenges faced by the fantastic staff in our NHS. Of course, I will continue to be the Member of Parliament of South Suffolk. I will still hold surgeries, stand up for local interests and work on my various projects and priorities. My first duty remains to represent you in Parliament, but it’s exciting to have new challenges to go with that core responsibility.

Hadleigh U3A The next meeting of the Hadleigh U3A will be at 2.30pm on Monday 14th August in the United Reformed Church, Hadleigh where Mark Smith will be talking about The Victoria Cross. All members and prospective members are welcome.

Hunting Bras And Black Cats Looking for a special bra can often be a solitary tedious business. Not so for the ladies of the Black Cat group. Their hunt for the right bra was carried out in small groups and was far from boring. With the Festival of Gardening and Art in mind this light-hearted exercise was combined with a search for small black cats bearing anagrams of flowers. Organisers, Beryl Meredith L to R Prize winners Carol Kinnaird, and husband Alan, had Wendy Harvey, Jane Marsland, created the imaginative Judith Hickford and Lynda Oxford. underwear and clever clues respectively. Armed with quiz sheets the ladies scoured the High Street and Market Place, for the appropriate bras or tiny black cats for their answers. Once they had solved the clues, members returned to base at Sydney Brown Court for refreshments, a second local quiz celebrating Suffolk Day and the much awaited answers. Beryl presented the gold cup and prizes to lucky the winners. Sincere thanks to the participating businesses. Without their cooperation this most enjoyable evening would not have been possible.

On 17 July 1917 Private Bertie Gowers was killed in action while serving with the 9th Yorkshire Regiment in Ypres, Belgium leaving behind a young wife with an infant child and another baby on the way. 100 years on his family made an emotional pilgrimage to the cemetery where Bertie was buried. While in Ypres, Peter Gowers, Anne Jakeman and Graham Skinner, Bertie’s three surviving grandchildren took part in the daily act of remembrance, the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate, laying a wreath in honour of Bertie. The highlight of the trip was an emotional gathering at Bertie’s final resting place on the 100th anniversary of his death. While on the western front the group also took the opportunity to remember other family members who died during the war, specifically Privates John Samuel Hill and Robert Skinner.

We all know that we should write a Will, but too few of us know we should also consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney. The issue is becoming increasingly important, with Suffolk’s over-65 population forecast to grow by nearly 60% by 2039, according to a new report based on Office for National Statistics data. Over 65s are nationally the fastest growing age group, as better healthcare prolongs life expectancy. Problems surrounding an ageing society are particularly acute here in Suffolk - experts predict one in three people in the county will be older than 65 by 2039, compared to one in four in England. Charities who care for the elderly recommend everyone plans ahead to ease the potential burden on relatives – and one key way of doing that is by making a Lasting Power of Attorney, which gives another individual the legal authority to look after specific aspects of your financial affairs or health and welfare should you need extra help or lose the capacity to make these decisions for yourself. If you do not have a Lasting Power of Attorney in place and later become mentally incapacitated, relatives may face long delays and expense in applying to the Court of Protection to get access and take control of your assets and finances. There are a number of reasons why you might need someone to make decisions for you or act on your behalf. It may just be a temporary situation, for example, if you are in hospital and need help with everyday things such as making sure bills are paid. Alternatively, you may need to make longer-term plans if you have been diagnosed with dementia and you may lose the mental capacity to make your own decisions in the future. How can Gotelee help? Making a Lasting Power of Attorney helps ensure the people you care most about aren’t forced to deal with unnecessary difficulties in the future. Just as important is keeping an up-to-date Will; without one, your final wishes may go unheard and your loved ones will face the added pressure at an already emotionally fraught time. Both Lasting Powers of Attorney and a Will are especially important if you own property or other valuable assets, and even more so if you have children. Our specialist team of lawyers can meet you at one of our offices in Hadleigh, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Woodbridge or Melton and can guide you through the process. You will be aware that from September, the District Council will start to vacate its Headquarter offices in Hadleigh for a move in to Ipswich with other public sector organisations. Whilst the move brings obvious benefits for our Council to work more closely with other Local Authorities and public health, locally the exit may be more acutely felt. After many years in the Town, there will be local residents and businesses sad to see the departure of officers being based here. Leader of Babergh District Council, Jennie Jenkins told us “I do appreciate that people in Hadleigh will feel the change more than other communities who are not used to us being so obviously present in their area. However, wherever our administrative base is, Babergh District Council will continue to deliver high quality services to everyone, from its public realm work and building control through to bin collection and food safety inspections.” Arthur Charvonia, joint Chief Executive of Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils, told an audience of local town and parish councils recently, "With our move we will undoubtedly want to and need to work harder to connect with our communities and ensure that you see the benefits our efforts bring to the local area. We are not complacent in making sure we maintain relationships with the local people we are here to serve." Just like other Councils, Babergh is investing more in bringing council services online for residents via the website www.babergh.gov.uk and reflects the fact that many people now expect to do business with their local council 24 hours a day. With hectic work and home lives, the times when people used to pop in to the local office to pay their rents are now well behind us and there is more focus on providing better online solutions. Of course, some of our questions are more complex and so the arrival of the new telephone number 0300 123 4000 this Spring has also brought benefits to residents. Inevitably as the move dates approach, questions turn to what will become of the building on Corks Lane? This is something that the Council is working on with a design and planning team, testing the market to explore the possible options. As these develop, a sounding board involving officers Councillors and a representative of the Town Council will come together to share views and develop ideas. The Town Council has already been sharing community views with the District Council through a dedicated email address. A report will be presented in the Autumn to District Councillors with a recommended preferred option. As more details come through, we will share these through this newsletter and other channels.

BRENT ELEIGH, Nr. LAVENHAM, SUDBURY, SUFFOLK I said I’d be including pictures of The Shelley Show this month, and here they are. You have no idea how hard the human team works to make everything perfect for our riders on the day, and how much primping and perming goes on in the yard. Part Time Veterinary Receptionist Required For our Hadleigh Surgery It was a wonderful end-of year celebration for everyone who comes to us. A huge thank you to the people who made it all happen. The last weeks of term were spent playing games in the arena and hacking out along the quiet roads: no more practising for the show, for once. Now the Centre is closed for the school holidays and the herd is resting. Some of the herd has gone to holiday homes for a change of scene; some members are still here, being exercised by Lyn’s team of able-bodied riders. The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance would like to say a big thank you to the Hadleigh Town Council, The Thrift Shop and South Suffolk Leisure for donations made to the Alliance. Hadleigh Town Council have donated £500 towards the work of the Alliance that is fundraising to make Hadleigh a dementia friendly community. The Alliance aims to employ a local facilitator to support community groups in Hadleigh to become dementia friendly. Carol Bailey Town Clerk says; “Hadleigh Town Council are pleased to support HDAA in ensuring our town is a safe and pleasant community for those people living with dementia. HDAA continues to flourish by providing dementia awareness training to anyone interested and Town Council Staff and Councillors are pleased and proud to have been able to attend this.” Phil Wells, Chair of the HDAA, says; “Grants and donations like these really make a difference; Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance depends on local people and organisations to support us – and more importantly to ensure Hadleigh is a friendly place for people living with dementia.” Barbara Boyd at the Thrift Shop Hadleigh has been a regular supporter of the alliance and we would like to thank her for a £300.00 donation that will support the local facilitator project. As part of South Suffolk Leisure’s Suffolk Day Celebrations funds were raised of £62.76 raised from a community coffee morning. A big thank you to The Ansell Community Centre from the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance On Friday 14th July the Ansell Community Centre once again brought Hollywood to Hadleigh by hosting a free night of film for the community with aim of raising awareness and understanding to dementia. The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance would like to say a big thank you to the Ansell Community Centre and their volunteers for hosting an evening of film to help raise awareness and understanding of Dementia. Members of the community attended the screening of IRIS and enjoyed a refreshing choc-ice during the evening, kind donations were received of £75.66 towards the Alliance’s aims of creating a dementia friendly community. Working together we can create a dementia friendly Hadleigh. Tracey Loynds of the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance said; “the Ansell Community Centre have supported the HDAA since we formed in September 2014, and play an active role in the community supporting families to live well with dementia. They have hosted evenings to raise awareness and understanding, encouraged their volunteers to become dementia friends and have taken the huge step to save the newly named Ansell Memory Café when it faced closure. They are truly a dementia friendly group, for which we are very grateful”. Double Triumph for Hadleigh Hearing Care Firm

Bildeston Primary School

One local hearing care company is today celebrating after winning two prestigious business honours and being a named a finalist for third at the highly regarded EADT Business Awards. The Hearing Care Centre, established in 1998, is a family-run private hearing care practice based locally at Hadleigh Health Centre, with a further 23 local outreach centres across Suffolk and Norfolk. The company took home the awards for ‘Showcasing Excellence’ and ‘Customer Care’, after showing the judges that the staff go above and beyond customer expectations, ensuring everything they do has the customer at its core. The Hearing Care Centre prides itself as being a truly family business. With Managing Director Karen Finch at the helm, she also has alongside her, her husband, two sons, auntie, niece and two former school friends. Karen was also personally nominated as a finalist for the ‘Director of the Year’ award. This year was the tenth occasion that the company has either won or been selected as a finalist in the ‘Customer Care’ category, demonstrating the consistent high levels of service their employees provide. After receiving the news, Karen expressed “To be nominated for three awards was an honour in itself, but to have won two of them - I just wasn’t expecting it. “I’d like to thank my team who are an amazing group of individuals. This journey has been 19 years in the making, but I have never felt such depth of pride for my team as I do right now.” The winners of the 20th EADT Business Awards were announced at a glitzy black tie event at Trinity Park, Ipswich in July, which also featured guest speaker, Bill Turnbull, former BBC Breakfast Presenter and now Suffolk resident.

The Great Line of 20p Pieces! We raised £700 towards new curtains for the Ansell Centre! Thanks to all the groups and individuals who collected 20p pieces and brought them to the Ansell Centre on Sunday 25th June. We had enough for a line of coins all the way from the gate in Duke Street to the gate in Market Place – which amounted to £700 in 20p coins or 35,000 coins. Thanks also to the TSB bank and their customers for being patient while we paid them in! The money will go towards the cost of new curtains for the Ansell Centre which is part of a project to upgrade the building. The United Reformed Church (URC) and the Ansell Centre Charity (ACC) are working together to install new lights, ceiling, boiler and curtains. This work will take place during August and we hope all our users will be pleased with the new look when they return in September.

Ofsted - June 2016

Early Years Foundation Stage - Nursery

Hadleigh Community Primary would like to send a big thank you to the Ann Beaumont Trust who kindly agreed to fund an Emotional Literacy course (called ELSA) for one of their staff, Teaching Assistant Shelley Kinnaird. Emotional Literacy supports children to understand their own feelings and those of others, it encourages high self-esteem and helps children to focus better in their learning. Emotional Literacy sessions will be of a real benefit to the school. They start in September. Thank you Ann Beaumont Trust, you have made this possible. School Camp A big ‘Thank You’ to all the helpers who were involved in making the annual school camp another successful year. Despite the rain, particularly on Camp 1, lots of fun and team work took place including walking as a ‘caterpillar’, den building and cricket. This was rounded off with a game of ‘Flush Out’ in the woods then hot chocolate before bedtime.

This month we have had some beautiful Rhode Island Red chicks hatch in the Nursery. The children watched and waited patiently for three weeks until the morning of 28th June when suddenly they heard cheeping from inside the eggs and small holes started to appear. This prompted a steady stream of classes from all over the school coming to view them, many pupils were lucky enough to see chicks breaking out of their shells and those who didn't could catch up on 'chick cam'. The chicks are quickly developing their adult feathers and are living happily together in the Nursery garden. We would like to thank Mr Crickmore for providing the incubator and keeping a careful eye on them and Gate Farm Eggs for the eggs. Key Stage 2 (Year 3)

Many teachers enjoyed a day at camp seeing the children learning in a different environment. Every camp was lucky enough to have a terrific band of parents especially in the kitchen where the chefs had to keep up with the appetite of 60 people – that’s no mean feat! Over four camps, 200 children and 60 adults enjoyed a fantastic experience unique to our school. They were a delight to work with. Here’s looking forward to HCPS Camp 2018! Sport Six of our Year 3 and 4 children attended the Key Steps 2 Gymnastics County Finals on Friday 7th July at Bury St Edmunds after a win at their local competition. They competed with floor and body management routines and a vault, the children had a lovely day and were placed 2nd. They qualified for the Regional Gymnastics in Basildon which took place on Wednesday 12th July. This was a wonderful experience for the children and made even better by watching Max Whitlock training after our competition.

Year 3 have been very busy this term! After their successful Roman Day - where they became soldiers, learning various formations using the shields they made and feasting on Roman style delicacies - they continued putting their topic knowledge into action by writing their own play. The three performances of "The Homework Project- Back in Time" were a great success and, through the stories of Romulus and Remus and Boudicca, we learnt that all historical evidence is interpreted by people who will see it from different points of view. Well done Year 3! You were awesome!

Aaron Clarke Kersey Mill Newsletter It has been a pleasure in recent weeks to welcome various clubs and organisations to Kersey Mill. Bildeston Ladies Club enjoyed a beautiful warm summers evening here for a tour of the Mill, Stowmarket Art Club enjoyed a glorious summers day painting the Mill from the front lawns, and the MGSVW club who drove their beautiful vintage MG cars to Kersey Mill and were given a guided tour and refreshments at The Copper Kettle. Our open days have also been well attended during the month. Works to phase 3 of the restoration of Kersey Mill has begun. The Hurst Frame is a heavy wooden farm supporting the gears and three pairs of mill stones. We have discovered evidence of earlier machinery as mortices within the vertical timbers would indicate that the Bridge Trees were once made of timber. We believe that the cast iron Bridge Trees and current machinery was possible installed in 1870 when major works were carried to improve and modernise the mill. A horizontal Lay Shaft runs through the Hurst Frame in a straight line with gearing transferring power to the mill stones via a Wallower and Crown wheel. The majority of the frame is badly decayed and the machinery needs complete overhaul and all the wooden teeth need replacing.

Thinking of replacement windows, doors, fascia, soffits or conservatory? Sometime ago we lost a beautiful Beech tree that was diseased and died. It had spent the past 100 years or so in the vicinity of the mill, We decided that we wanted to try and use some of the timber in the restoration so we called upon the services of Drywood to mill the timber for us.

Recipe for Success by Sarah Thompson A lovely friend of mine bought me a beautiful recipe book recently, and once I have tried and tested some of the contents, I will share. Meanwhile, Simon’s colleagues are rapidly becoming my friends, having given this month’s recipe the thumbs up on two separate occasions. I am not a huge fan of fruit loaves in general, but even I am happy to say that this recipe is perfect for a quick fix therapeutic baking session, followed by any excuse to share it with friends, especially when accompanied by a nice cup of tea. Banana Loaf Ingredients: 125g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing 100g caster sugar, 175g self-raising flour 2 very ripe medium bananas (about 300g in total), peeled 1 tbsp double cream (optional), 2 eggs, 100g sultanas, 1 tsp vanilla extract Method 1. Preheat the oven to 170°C, fan 150°C. Lightly grease a 900g (2lb) loaf tin with butter. 2. Melt the butter and sugar together in a small saucepan, stirring continuously until the sugar is dissolved. Pour the mixture into a large bowl; leave to cool for 5 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, sift the flour onto a large plate and add a pinch of salt. On another plate, use a fork to mash the bananas well. Add a dash of cream at this stage. (optional) 4. Beat eggs one at a time into the butter mixture, then add mashed bananas. Stir in the sultanas and vanilla extract. Add the flour gradually, stirring well after each addition. 5. Scrape mixture into the tin and bake in the middle of the oven for 45 minutes, until lightly golden and well-risen. Cover the top with foil if it looks like it is starting to brown. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes. Remove from tin to cool completely. The loaf will keep in an airtight container for up to 2 days, if indeed it lasts that long!

Surviving Winter in Hadleigh and 12 Villages Our second week of distributing free emergency alarm fobs revealed that we needed to explain again in this column the condition of our offer.(It didn't help that the notice on our stall hadn't the space for explanation). However we reached our target of FIFTY fobs given out, this being as much as our funds would permit as we still need to keep a workable balance in our account for our winter charity commitments. We view these alarm fobs as a worthwhile extension of our winter support for those in fuel need, perhaps those that can may like to make a maximum donation of £3. This thought comes about as a result of a chat with someone who already donates his Senior Winter fuel allowance in addition to his other worthy causes. So once again: 1. Any Senior over 65 or on benefit totally free subject to our funds permitting. 2. Disabled citizens are no charge at any time. 3. No group applications of any kind please. For anyone disabled unable to collect fobs may be collected on their behalf. name and village required if out of Hadleigh Town Council boundary. We hope to continue attending the Friday Market and most likely the new Saturday one and alarm fobs would be available from us there or we can be contacted at the numbers below. All takings from attendance at both market's goes into our SWH account and we are grateful for the two market licence holders for their generosity of support. A request and great interest came from a young sixth former at Hadleigh High on behalf of a neighbour, therefore a big well done to Sam Woodward on his initiative. Also a thank you for a donation from a Belgan couple for service rendered in what to see in and around the town on their last week end tour and who only wished that they could exit! If the gent who pointed out a glaring omission on my part relating to two WW1 medals could contact us, we in turn may have some news for him (only may that is), see letters page. Fred Breyer, Chairman, 829127. Peter Gower, Treasurer 827005. Nicholas Webber, Trustee

Vicar of Dibley success Last month HADS were very proud to put on The Vicar Of Dibley in St Mary’s Church. Tickets sold really well and with thanks to Plant Parts and also Steve Blakes lawn mower repairs as sponsors we was able to put on this script from the original TV show. The HADS cast and crew worked hard to transform the church in to a theatre venue for the two showings which sold out. We do understand that on the Friday night some people nearer the back didn't have a good view of the show as most of it was sitting down but we hope you understand that as Hadleigh does not have a venue with a stage we have to work with what we have. I’d like to personally thank all the cast and crew for putting on a fantastic show which we all know takes LOTS of hard work and planning to happen. Our next appearance is at the magical picnic on the 20th Aug at Coxes park 12-4pm This is a family day to bring a picnic and enjoy free themed face painting, magic show, treasure hunt and some family games too. This event is part of the festival of gardening and arts and HADS are putting on a small show of Bill & Ben for all the family to enjoy. Fancy dress to this event is recommended and the theme is magical wizards and fairy's and is for all ages and we will have some prizes for the best dressed too. HADS next project will be the panto Snow White and the Six Dwarfs written by Trev Clarke which auditions are taking place on the 10th September, more details to follow shortly. So as you can see we have been keeping very busy. please check out or facebook page or website for more info on all our events taking place. Trev Clarke, Chairman of HADS

Blemishes…. Banished!!! With the removal of minor cosmetic skin blemishes no longer available on the NHS, people are turning to private practices like Suffolk Medical Clinic, in nearby Boxford, for treatment. Minor lumps and bumps like cysts, warts and skin-tags are usually harmless but can be irritating and unattractive. If you have a skin lesion that is bothering you, removal is usually quick and simple. Moles (raised or flat) can also be removed for cosmetic reasons, either by ‘shaving’ or ‘excising’ using local anaesthetic. It is important that any mole worrying you is examined by a doctor. Changes in size, shape and colour, or itching or bleeding, can be cause for concern. If you are worried about a mole, don’t wait - let us take a look.

Minor Surgery Clinic Mole checks and minor surgery to remove unwanted blemishes like cysts, warts and skin tags. Call 01787 211 000 for more information or visit our clinic on Broad Street, Boxford.

“I had a large raised pale mole on my chin that the NHS refused to remove. It had been a huge issue to me for years. The staff at Suffolk Medical Clinic were just so welcoming. The procedure was very quick and efficient, and I will definitely be visiting again.” Alison, Hadleigh. If you have a lump or bump that is bothering you, please give us a call or pop in and arrange to see one of our medically trained staff.

Hadleigh Evening WI The first part of this evening's meeting was, in a way, a tribute to Philippa Carruthers, who we greatly miss. Our President, Sophie Rickards, began the meeting with a speech about Philippa and her long-running commitment to our W.I. of which she was a member for over 40 years. She served on the Committee for most of that time in various roles. This was followed by a minute's silence. As it happened, Philippa's granddaughter, Katherine Harris, came along to give us a Makeup Masterclass , as planned. (Katherine had previously worked for Makeup company, Urban Decay before going freelance.) It became a family event as she brought along her mother Zoe as her model and Philippa's sister Glyn for extra support. We all enjoyed watching Zoe's transformation and Patricia Stevens had a bit of a makeover too and the rest of us were given some tips and advice on improving our technique with makeup. Before dealing with the business part of our meeting, we had a break for coffee, tea, cakes and sausage rolls which Philippa loved to make. The Lunch Club this month will meet on Friday 21st at Millsoms in Dedham. There is no meeting in August but we will meet on Friday 4th August for a Ramble along the Riverside Walk, followed by an Afternoon Tea in Jean Madge's Garden. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 19th, September when Rory O'Brien will talk about The Theatre Royal In Bury. If you would like further details please contact Rae Stapleton Tel 01473 823585 or raestapleton@hotmail.co.uk

Holiday advice from Hadleigh Osteopaths Whilst away on holiday there is the temptation to lay out on a sun bed to get a tan. If you have a back that is vulnerable, then laying on your tummy for a prolonged period is often a precursor to low back ache. This can be further exacerbated by arching up onto your forearms to read that holiday block buster. If you want to read, consider sitting in the shade to do it, and change position on a regular basis. Laying on your back with your knees slightly bent is better than laying flat out. Most sun loungers are not that supportive! Lots of people return from their travels with a stiff neck or a sore back. This can often be attributed to sleeping in a different bed or using a different pillow. If you are accustomed to using a memory or orthopaedic pillow, why not take it with you? If you are travelling long haul, an aisle seat will give you the opportunity to get up and stretch your legs on a regular basis. This is not only better for your back, but will also help reduce the risk of conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). We regularly see patients who have returned from holiday with a sore back, but are too sunburnt to touch. Remember to pack your sun cream and apply it regularly. Finally, if you have a bit of a niggle and are thinking of going away soon, why not give us a ring for an appointment to get it sorted before you go on holiday. Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together The summer term is always a busy one and this year has been no exception. In amongst all the usual visits, outings, reports etc. this year we have had an OFSTED Inspection. It is over four years since the last Inspection when we were judged to be ‘Good’, so this one was not unexpected. I am delighted to say that we again achieved ‘Good’ which, given the way the Government has moved the goal posts, the fact that the inspection schedule has changed as well as the challenges facing the school including tighter budgets, is a fantastic result. Our congratulations to Ms Golding and all the staff for this amazing result! Our thanks also to the parents for their continuing support and not forgetting the children themselves who provided the inspector with some interesting comments! Here are some quotes from the Inspection: • pupils ‘enjoy their learning and want to achieve well’ • Staff are ‘highly motivated’ • ‘This is a happy school’ If you have a child approaching school age then why not come into school and see for yourselves what a good education we can provide here in Bildeston. We have an Open Morning on Wednesday 20th September. But you don’t have to wait for that you can visit the school at any time, just call us on 01449740269.If you are someone who is just curious to see what goes on in schools then you are most welcome to have a look around too. We wish the staff and children (and even the parents!) a Happy Summer Holiday. The summer social was held in the beautiful gardens of Stoke Priory on a rather damp evening, where our host and hostess, Henry and Victoria Englehart very kindly welcomed us into their home, to shelter from the rain, to eat our supper! The gardens are set in rolling countryside, with wonderful views. Members enjoyed walking through the gardens, and the greenhouse, which housed a host of interesting specimens, some of them planted by Henry’s mother many years ago. Our visit to Cobbs Hall, Great Saxham on 15th July was thankfully, a sunny day. Dr Soper has spent over 30 years creating his garden, where there are two acres of lawns with colourful herbaceous borders, many ornamental trees, large fish and lily ponds. He built a ruined folly, overgrown with rambling roses, and a parterre. The walled kitchen garden was burgeoning with fruit and vegetables, with cucumbers and melons climbing high in the greenhouse. Afterwards we went on to Paugers Nursery at Depden, which is inspirational to visit, as they also have a garden where their plants are shown to great advantage. It is impossible to leave without fully loading ones car with lots of exciting new plants. Apart from the garden holiday in September, we have finished our visits for the summer. Talks at Hitcham village hall resume in the autumn, and next month I will give you a list of forthcoming speakers for the new season. We welcome new members, so please do think about coming along and joining us. Our secretary, Matthew Long can be contacted on 01449 741551 for details, and have a look at the website for more information. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

HADLEIGH & DISTRICT GARDEN CLUB presents

GARDENERS’ QUESTION TIME Monday 14th August at 7:30pm Town Hall, Market Place, Hadleigh Tickets £5 to include refreshments available from Keith Avis and The Idler

Down to Earth ...with Dave The open gardens day at Chelsworth was, as usual, a very pleasant day out, with many superb gardens open. Bands playing in two of the gardens, not the pub this year, plenty of plant stalls on the green and the highlight - a flying display by a spitfire complete with loop the loops etc. Due to some mobility problems not all the gardens were visited this year, with more time spent sitting listening to the music and drinking coffee. We still managed to buy more plants than we really needed, but so what. Back home in the garden and on the allotment the harvest is in full swing. Runner beans, courgettes, spinach, chard, cauliflowers, tomatoes, cucumbers and potatoes in abundance, so far there is no sign of blight on the potatoes or tomatoes. Incidentally, an article in 'Which' gardening claims that it is safe to put diseased leaves such as mildewed courgette leaves and blighted potato and tomato leaves on the compost. Apparently the blight spores need living tissue to survive and they die on the compost heap. Personally I am not so sure and prefer to take such material to the tip. A freshly planted row of cauliflower plug plants was promptly dug up by the mole, not once but twice. Hopefully the little feller has now moved on and the plants seem to have survived their ordeal. The cucumbers growing in the greenhouse are left to ramble as much as they like, unlike the tomatoes and runner beans that are stopped when they reach the top of their cane supports. The tomatoes growing outside are fed twice a week, watered every day and have any side shoots removed as soon as they are seen. It is very easy to miss a side shoot and it can soon take over the plant. I like to remove the lower leaves from the tomato plants, this helps the fruit to ripen. The yellow courgettes are, as usual, cropping very well, with many being given away. If the leaves turn yellow it is not such a problem on the yellow variety. Some spring green seeds have been sown in the greenhouse and they should be ready to plant out in September, probably in the ground recently occupied by the potatoes. Keeping the hanging baskets watered can be a bit of a problem and I recently got told off for missing one. It looked very sorry for itself and no amount of watering with the hose would revive it. The only answer was to lift the very heavy basket down and to plunge the whole thing in a large plastic container. After an overnight soak it fortunately revived and the now even heavier basket was replaced. A lesson learned, and it is now being watered twice a day while it is so hot. Keep dead heading all the flowers as this will give a succession of blooms. The gladioli on the allotment are once again giving some lovely cut flowers for indoors, and I suppose this is a type of dead heading. The more you cut, the more they seem to grow. That's all for this time, Dave

Fed up with hard water and lime scale? Fitting a water softener will save you money and time East Anglia has some of the hardest water in Great Britain. The scale build up on shower screens and taps, that ring of scum in the basin, and limescale in kettles are some of the visible consequences of hard water. We have to resort to using large amounts of washing powder, conditioner, extra salts in the dish washer and expensive bathroom cleaning products to overcome the dreaded scale. In my professional capacity I’ve replaced countless appliances that should have had a longer service life. Scale blocks water ways in boilers and hot water pipes. Heating elements in hot water cylinders and electric showers get encrusted and fail. All these problems can be solved by fitting an ion exchange water softener. Laundered clothes will feel softer, after showering your skin will feel smoother, you’ll use far less detergents and the adverse effects on your plumbing system will start to reverse. If you would like to know more, give me a call. I’m happy to show you a simple 15 minute demonstration and provide an installation survey. A typical installation can be done in one day. Three Years of War Seventy Seven Men Lost As far as is known no Hadleigh men lost their lives in August 1917 In August 1917 the conflict had been raging for three years and in St Mary’s church a service was held recognising forty Hadleigh men who had lost their lives; from what is known today the actual figure of the fallen at that time was seventy seven. From the outset the term ‘Great War’ was being used; great because of the common aim to right the injustices of the invasions in Europe and for many young men it was then just a great adventure. However, it soon became the great slaughter and as the war entered it’s fourth year the great quagmire of the Ypres Salient approached. The Third Battle of Ypres, more commonly known as the battle of ‘Passchendaele’ began on 31 July. Although there was some success on the first day, the weather conditions would play a crucial part in this battle and would determine the final outcome. The rain that had started on the 31 July continued unabated for the next 72 hours and for the rest of August it rained on all but three days. This deluge had an immediate effect on the drainage of the Salient, three years of shelling had severely disrupted the network of streams and drainage ditches which flowed between the low ridges. Swollen by the rain and with their banks destroyed, the water flooded out of the stream beds across the low lying areas to create an almost impassable marsh land. The opening Battle of Pilkem Ridge was followed by the Battle of Langemarck which was fought in the middle of August. The 8th Suffolks, with a contingent of Hadleigh men were to be involved. The Suffolks found it impossible to even reach their assembly positions for their planned attack on 12 August and the action had to be abandoned. Eventually the men were bussed out of the fighting zone for rest and training; they would not return to the front line until the end of September. The Western Front in France and Belgium was the main theatre of the war and that is where the war’s final outcome would be decided. But there were other less dangerous fronts which could easily be forgotten. One such place, was the Salonika Front (or the Macedonian Front). The Salonika Front generally ran parallel with the northern border of Greece, effectively across the neck of the country’s peninsula. It was formed at the end of 1915 when the Austro-Hungarian Balkan Army overran Serbia, a country that expected to find protection in a Treaty with Greece. The Allies became involved and this included six divisions (nominally 120,000 men) of the British

Army who faced the Bulgarian Army across the Front from 1915 until 1918. The Front at Salonika was brought to the attention of the people of Hadleigh in a letter from Corporal Stanley Whymark serving with the Army Service Corps that was published in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press on 15 August. Stanley Whymark was born in 1891 in Hadleigh most likely at number 153 George Street. By 1915 he had moved to Croydon and was working as a butcher, a trade he continued to follow in the army. He says, “I have been out here 21 months without leave, and sticking it seven days a week takes it out of one a bit. We cannot stop, as the boys must be fed and it’s our duty to get the food up whatever the cost may be”. The scourge of the Salonika Front was the heat and the ever present threat of disease; Stanley Whymark had been in hospital for three weeks with a fever. He didn’t have a high opinion of the locals, “The Greeks are not people to chum up with. They don’t seem to understand Tommy at all”. Stanley Whymark died in 1924, currently it is not known if this was a result of war time experience. Private Thomas Salmon (Stone Street) and with the 1st Suffolks also wrote to the newspaper in the Summer of 1917 and talked of a snake in his mosquito net and made the point that one needed to have a strong constitution to be in the Salonika area and that money was “of no service”, presumably because of the isolation and the sickness in the place. Thomas Salmon along Private William John Leeks (The Green) who served with the Army Service Corps both later died at home in Hadleigh from the effects of their Salonika war time experience. They are both buried with Commonwealth War Grave Commission headstones in Hadleigh Cemetery and are remembered on the war memorial. In February 1918, Private Ernest Edward Corder (George Street) serving with the 1st Suffolks died of pneumonia while in hospital in Taranto, Italy and was buried there. Other Hadleigh men to serve on the Salonika Front included; Privates Edward Bertie Bateman (George Street) and William Levi Chapman (Angel Street) with the 1st Suffolks. Privates Dick Peacock (Benton Street) and Reggie Leeks (Angel Street) and Driver William Edward Allen (New Cut), all with the Army Service Corps. Private Ernest King (Benton Street) with the Royal Field Artillery and Sergeant Leslie Claude Seggar (George Street) with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps and Private Charles Cook (Bridge Street) was a butcher with the Royal Fusiliers. Disease was the main killer at Salonika. No Hadleigh men appear to have been killed due to military action, although one man from Layham, Private Arthur Edward Rolfe, of the 1st Suffolks did fall in battle on 22 September 1916 and is remembered on the Layham War Memorial. If you know of men who served on the Salonika Front, the Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project would be pleased to hear from you. GREAT WAR NEWS AUGUST 1917 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Wed 8 August - The third anniversary of the war received due recognition at the places of worship last Sunday. At St Mary’s the list of forty names of Hadleigh men who have given their lives for their country was read at the Communion service. Wed 8 August - Private Charles R Peacock, with Suffolk Regiment in France son of Mr and Mrs Peacock, 28 Benton Street has been awarded the Military Medal for bravery and distinguished conduct. Wed 22 August - Lieut Philip Grimwade Wilson, Machine Gun Corps, son of Mr and Mrs Wilson [of East House, George Street], has been awarded the Military Cross for gallant conduct on the battlefield. He joined the Suffolks as 2nd Lieutenant in 1913 and went with the battalion to the Gallipoli Peninsula in July 1915. There and in Egypt he served with the machine gun section. In the spring of this year he came home for further training in machine gun work and after successfully passing his second examination was sent to the Western Front. This recognition of his meritorious action will give great pleasure and elicit the hearty congratulations of the townsfolk and a wide circle of friends.

Rosemary Schade 1927-2017 Rosemary was born in Aberdare, Glamorgan to Welsh parents, Trevor and Elsie May Nicholls. They moved to Windsor in 1930, and although she never again made her home in Wales, she was very proud of her Welsh heritage. She left school to work as a shorthand typist, and in 1949 was recruited by the Crown Agent for the Colonies to work as a secretary for the Government of Tanganyika, the beginning of many happy years in Africa. In 1952 she married Karel Schade, and they subsequently had three children. By 1961 there was considerable upheaval in Africa and they decided that their future would be safer in Europe. They spent a year in England before Karel was transferred to Brussels, where they remained for 10 years. Unfortunately, Rosemary’s marriage broke down and she and the children, by then in their teens, returned to Windsor, where she remained until all three were married. When her son moved to Canada and her younger daughter to Cyprus, Rosemary decided to relocate to Hadleigh to be near her elder daughter. She joined the Hadleigh Community Association and became the editor of its monthly newsletter, managing the whole process, from collecting articles and recruiting advertising, to typing stencils and producing enough copies to cover every household in Hadleigh. This newsletter was eventually taken over by an independent printer and became the Hadleigh Community News in its present form. Among her many other activities she started a club for knitting machine enthusiasts, including classes at Hadleigh High School. She was Secretary of the Hadleigh Battle of Britain Association, organising the annual commemorative lunch and successfully gaining permission for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight to provide a Hurricane, Spitfire and Lancaster Bomber to perform a flypast over the length of the High Street. She was also Membership Secretary of the Hadleigh Society and an active parishioner of St Joseph’s Church. Rosemary loved singing and was an enthusiastic member of the Hadleigh Choral Society. Socially she was part of a lovely group of friends who all enjoyed dancing, outings and parties. Sadly with age or ill health taking their toll, this broke up over the years and she, herself, was forced to curtail most of her activities, although still very involved with Hadleigh life, albeit in more gentle pursuits. Rosemary enjoyed a very active, interesting and happy life, and died as she would have wished, peacefully, at home. She leaves a family of three children, six grandchildren and a great grandson. August and Sunspots The Sun:August 5th Rise 05.27 Set 20.41, August 15th Rise 05.43 Set 20.22 August 31st Rise 06.09 Set 19.48 The Moon:Full 7th August, New 21st August The Planets:Venus:- Is currently in the constellation of Gemini in the pre-dawn sky and unmissable due to its brightness. The Moon is close by on the 19th. Jupiter:- Is now in evening twilight in the constellation of Virgo. August 25th will see a crescent Moon close to the Planet and to the leading star of Virgo, Spica. Saturn:- Is well placed in the constellation of Ophiuchus all month. The waxing gibbous Moon is near on the 30th. Meteors:- The stunning Perseid's peak on the night of August 12/13. A strong shower, meteors can be as high in number as 80 per hour. Even with some Moon interference this year, we can still expect a good show. Sunspots We must begin with a Warning:- Please DO NOT attempt to view the Sun with any optical aid unless you know what you are doing, the Sun is a wondrous object, but also deadly and you WILL either loose your sight fully, or at the very least, suffer extensive eye damage. Please contact me directly if you wish to look at the Sun and I will give you the guidelines we use.

Now we've dealt with the housework we can concentrate on this set of 3 glorious images that were taken by my good friend Bruce Lamberton, with a Sky watcher 127mm Maksutov telescope and a Samsung Galaxy S2 Smartphone, over the course of 3 days. July 8th, 12th and 16th of a large Sunspot group. So what is a Sunspot? Well you will instantly see that they are black in colour. This is very deceptive and is purely on effect of contrast. The Photosphere (visible surface of the Sun) is some 6,000 deg, the spot is 4,000 deg and thus emits less light yet if placed on its own in space its brightness would be greater than an arc lamp. They are caused by concentrations of magnetic field flux and often appear in pairs with opposite magnetic polarity. Because of this strong magnetic activity, Sunspots are related to coronal loops prominences, re-connection events, solar flares and coronal mars ejections. Sunspots alter quickly in size and shape and also can live for a few days up to several weeks. The Sun rotates once on its axis in days and so spots appear to drift across its surface and once they have passed out of view if they survive they will appear again around a fortnight later. Back to the spots in the images. They appeared on the Eastern limb of the Sun on 5/6 July and quickly grew in size. It was then designated a beta-class magnetic region. (a bipolar spot configuration). As it grew more it was recategorised as a beta-gamma-delta region that is a mixture of polarites in a dominantly bipolar configuration with opposite polarity umbrae (darker area) within single penumbra (lightest area). Spots like this can be very dangerous when they are facing Earth because if they release a coronal Mars Ejection at this time we are directly in its path. The power of these outbursts can lead to intense aurora activity or in extreme cases it can knock out satellites and even power grids on Earth. This group released a fairly large C - class flare (the type that can interfere with satellites) on 8th of July. A slightly stronger flare occurred on the 9th this time a M - class flare which lead to increased aurora activity. So, remember next time when you're feeling too hot, that the Sun is a very powerful and deadly force it's also very dynamic and astronomy doesn't need to be confined to the dark. Until next month clear skies. Any questions please email me on neilnorman03@gmail.com A very happy birthday to our beautiful little lady Keira-louise who will turn 6 on the 20th. How the years fly !!!!

Save The Date - The Big Sing returns to Hadleigh We are delighted to welcome the Big Sing Choir back to Hadleigh! Save the date in your diary, this FREE community event will take place on Saturday 7th October 2017 at the United Reformed Church, Market Place Hadleigh. This will be the choirs third visit to Hadleigh and is guaranteed to be an evening of music, song and laughter. Door open at 5:30pm for a 6:00pm start. The event is sponsored by Barbara Boyd from the Hadleigh Thrift shop. Tickets are FREE of charge and a collection will be made on the night benefitting the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance and Children’s Air Ambulance. Tracey Loynds, chair of the HDAA said “we have enjoyed two wonderful evenings of song which have been truly uplifting. We are delighted that The Big Sing have agreed to come back once again.” The Children’s Air Ambulance said “we are delighted to have been chosen as the beneficiary of this year’s fundraising. We fly critically ill children across the UK to the specialist care they need. We know that the longer a sick child is out of hospital, the greater the risk. Our helicopter not only flies fast, but also serves as a flying intensive care unit for children. We can deliver children to safety approximately four times faster than transport by road. When every second counts this can be a matter of life and death.” FREE Tickets are available from the 1st August 2017 at the Idler, Hadleigh Thrift Shop and Keith Avis on Hadleigh High Street. Barbara Boyd says: ‘we would love you to come and join us enjoy the wonderful sounds with love and laughter, these are two great funds that improve the lives of those living in Hadleigh and support young children when most needed.’ If you would like to know more about the Children’s Air Ambulance https://www.childrensairambulance.org.uk/ If you would like to know more about becoming a dementia friend or get involved with Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance you can email us now at hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk For more information on dementia friends visit: www.alzheimers.dementiafriends.org.uk

Hadleigh Steering Group Meeting 3rd July 2017 Notes of Proposals/Decisions/Actions Festival of Gardening and Art: There was a Festival Stall at the Friday Market on 7th July. Charities and voluntary organisations are able to take up the free charity pitch provided by Justin. To apply go to wwwsuffolkmarketevents.co.uk The full Festival Programme can be downloaded from the website visithadleighsuffolk.co.uk Tidy Town Volunteers: The hot weather has increased activity by the river and with it litter in the river. This does of course have consequences for wild life as well as visual pollution. We are endeavouring to get it removed. We continue two weekly picks, as well as assisting with watering the community gardens and hanging baskets. We welcome new volunteers; anyone interested should contact Anita at ourtidytown@gmail.com Christmas Event Group: An event notification has been submitted to Babergh with the 9th Dec as the suggested date for a Market Place event. Main Agenda item: Should the Steering Group have a formal constitution? It was suggested that we consider the advantages and disadvantages of a formal constitution. At present written Terms of Reference describe the role of the group and the practicalities of how it operates. Discussions covered the requirements of a formal constitution, if it would change the nature of the group and the volunteer roles required. There were different points of view expressed. To include those with an interest in the Steering Group but not at the meeting it was decided to provide a ballot paper with the minutes for use at the next meeting. It was agreed to change the name from HADLEIGH STEERING GROUP to HADLEIGH FORUM to more accurately describe the open nature of the group and the representation from all sectors of the community. Next Meeting: Monday 7th August 4.15pm – 6.00pm at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure Social Room. Main Agenda item: Issues concerning amenities in Hadleigh If you have any suggestions for Agenda items please contact the Chairman, in good time, before the meeting. snowdonjane@hotmail.co.uk

Dear Sir, On holiday from Argyll, raised in Hadleigh 30 years ago, this open invitation to peep behind the scenes of a Suffolk village during ‘Open Gardens’ was too tempting to miss. I had expected to be charmed by householders' efforts, knowing how kind the local climate is for flower growers. Yet I did not expect the warmest of welcomes we received and the open generosity of spirit we met along the way. We spent very happy hours shaking hands, exchanging garden stories and delighting in the wild flower borders alive with bees. So much diversity and so much inspiration shared with heart-warming friendliness. I am green with envy but bless those garden-owners who selflessly made this the high point of our holiday! Hazel Jones, Hadleigh/Argyll, Scotland

Some 40 years ago I was encouraged (challenged!) to grow Broad Beans – having never grown a single vegetable before! I started with the Aquadulce variety and was fortunate enough to have a good crop (which I much enjoyed). It spurred me on to grow a full range of vegetables. Many years later when we moved to Hadleigh, with a garden too small to contain a vegetable patch, I went to the Town Council and was able to rent a plot at Bridge Street. Since then (18 years ago) I have derived much pleasure from going there - the site is so peaceful and the soil is so good. Yes, I have found it hard work at times but well worthwhile. Reflecting on this, I want to encourage anybody who is thinking of growing their own vegetables to give it a go. At Bridge Street the Association has installed a compost free toilet and a pump has been installed so that water can be obtained from an aquifer however dry the conditions when it fails to rain. If you are interested in acquiring a plot but are not sure how to go about managing it, any of us would be more than willing to share what knowledge and experience we have and/or to suggest a suitable book (Dr. D.G. Hessayon’s books are very good and not very expensive). In addition there is a chicken club and it is a sure-fire way of getting fresh eggs. The club would warmly welcome fresh members – contact Trevor on 823128. Yours sincerely, John Druce

On the 9th June my wife who suffers from cancer and is 92 years old had a fall in the house striking her head at 0500 hours, I instantly called 999. The Ambulance Crew, Doctors, Nurses and all the staff in the Brantham and Washbrook Wards were magnificent during her 10 day stay. One hears complaints about the NHS, rarely any compliments, so I would like to thank the following for the before and after care she has received from the following in no special order - The Hadleigh Health Centre, District Nurses, St. Elizabeth Hospice, Marie Curie, NHS Crisis Action Team and the Forget me Not Home Service. On behalf of my wife Ulla and all our family I thank you all, one never appreciates the wonderful service you all give until we need help and assistance. Brian Lazenby, Former Mayor, Town & District Councillor

Dear Sir, Hadleigh Saturday Market. At the first Saturday Market (16th July), on my militaria stall a gentleman pointed out a potentially expensive clanger I would be dropping on two medals from WW1, due to a basic oversight on my part. He could well have bought the medals himself leaving me pleased at the sale and potentionly making himself a tidy profit in the process. The Market licensee was most impressed when told of the quality of her clientele, as well as her stallholders! What a breath of fresh air distinct from the ‘chancers’ you come across in today's world. Thank you Sir, I will be looking out for the item you are searching for. Fred Breyer

Here you are in August already, but I’m writing in July before our Open Day which I’ll tell you about in September. Confused? That’s nothing! I found Mum in the kitchen with a sink full of water recently, not washing up but encouraging a gosling to swim. The poor little mite had splayed legs and Mum was supervising his hydrotherapy. I was about to ask Henry to buy her a plastic duck! During July we met lots of lovely people and raised over ÂŁ700 in Long Melford at the Vintage Rally and Street Fair. Congratulations to the organisers of both fantastic events, even the weather was good! We also had another two good days talking to many visitors at the Shelley Fun Dog Show and Copdock School Summer Fete - I don't think I've ever had so much fuss! Like many of you, some of our volunteers are on holiday so SESAW will be closed during August. It will also help us settle down again after the Open Day excitement. If you are looking for an interesting family day out, try the Wildlife Fair at the beautiful Beth Chatto gardens on 22nd and 23rd August. We have been invited to this popular annual event at Elmstead Market, CO7 7DB so do look out for us. There will be bargains galore at Barbara’s Bonanza Sale at the Parish Rooms, Stratford St. Mary, CO7 6JH, 10-2pm on 19th August. The kind villagers always donate quality items including a big dictionary which I’m still reading. According to this font of knowledge, apart from being the eighth month, august also means “inspiring reverence or admirationâ€?. Surely that must be a reference to me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua! 3 DJ UV Disco time It's now August and its been a busy few months. First of all I need to say sorry as the Fun Day on the 23rd July had to be cancelled. I still don't have all the details for why but the castle company had a phone call from a member of public saying not to attend the event after it had been advertised and arranged correctly via the council who were happy with the event. I feel Hadleigh lacks events but find it tricky to arrange events for Hadleigh if people don't support me. If people have a problem or would like more info about an event please contact me to discuss as the castle company involved has lots of members of the public contact them complaining about the event being cancelled. My next event is another 3 DJ disco with DJ Flummpy, Chubby Rhino and my self DJ Trev but this time in UV so neon wear is advised. The disco is on the 19th Aug at the football club yet again raising funds for the football club. Tickets are now on sale at £5 from Keith Avis and but are £8 on the door so buy your tickets in advance. On the 19th of Aug i’ll be involved in the magical picnic (see the HADS write up for more info) and its time to get your place for the next yard sale on the 24th Sept. contact me for details or visit the website to book. HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Meeting of the Council held on the 15th June 2017 Present: Councillors: Free (Town Mayor), Byrne, Cook, Fraser, Haylock, Matthews, Monks, Shearly-Sanders, Whiting, Wilson, Wiltshire and Young. In attendance: Babergh District Councillors Campbell, Dawson and Grandon APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors Angland, Haines and Sheldrick. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST Councillors Free and Wilson declared a pecuniary interest in the Accounts for Payment - as they were payees. Councillors Byrne and Cook declared a non-pecuniary interest in the Finance & Personnel Committee as the Beaumont School were receiving a grant and they are both Governors of the school. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Council held on the 18th May 2017 were taken as read and confirmed and signed. MATTERS ARISING Election 2017 Councillor Cook asked for clarification on the use of Beaumont Primary School as a polling station and residents unable to gain access. She advised that this was not the school’s fault but that Babergh District Council had not met the requirements laid down by the school over access whilst the children were in attendance. POLICE The Clerk advised that she had met recently with Sergeant Miah but there had been no issues raised to bring to Council. REPORTS OF THE COUNTY & DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Written reports had been received from Suffolk County Councillor Fraser, Babergh District Councillors Campbell, Dawson and Grandon. Councillor Fraser clarified that his locality budget had been reduced by 20% (this figure was missing from the report). Councillor Grandon added to her report that a problem with grass cutting, as raised on social media, had been resolved. She updated her report by advising Council that there is going to be a charge made for pre-application advice given from the first of July starting at £84.00. A full schedule of costs would be available on the website. She went on to advise that other Councils charged for this service and Babergh District Council were bringing it in to cover the £40,000 it was costing them to provide the service. Hadleigh Town Councillors were concerned about this introduction as they felt it would reduce the number of people using the service and could end up with it costing them

The final film of our Summer Season

Queen of Katwe (PG) A COLOURFUL FILM FROM WALT DISNEY Friday 18th August at 7.30 pm, £3.50 on the door Queen of Katwe is a warmhearted, rags to riches film that follows a Ugandan girl who discovers that she has an aptitude for chess. Her life is covered in this true story from her days selling corn on the streets to the time when she is crowned Chess Queen of Katwe. As feel good stories go, it has a ring of authenticity that makes this Disney film rather special. Here is a main stream film set in Africa that is not about conflict, has an entirely black cast (which includes David Oyelowo), and majors on intellectual achievement. We hope you will enjoy it! Tea, coffee and choc ices will be served during an appropriate interval. Our new brochure with details of our autumn season of films will also be available. Please note this film will be shown in the URC church (next to the Ansell Centre) due to renovations taking place in the Ansell Centre during August. You will find “Hollywood in Hadleigh” in the Ansell Centre and entrance to both films is £3.50 on the door.

more money when planning applications have to be resubmitted. It was agreed to carry out an investigation by looking at the last twelve months planning applications to ascertain how many had used the pre-application advice against how many will use it over the following twelve months after the charges are imposed. Although this information was received unfavourably Councillor Grandon was thanked for providing the information. Councillor Campbell updated her report by advising Council that the trunk roads in the County, the A12 and A14, would be provided with electric car charging points every 20 miles. The Clerk was asked to find out who was paying for these points. Councillor Dawson updated her report by providing details on the Weavers Meadow development and the issues with Persimmon Homes on the wetland side where the balancing tank is sited. Until the issues are sorted out phases 2 and 3 cannot go ahead. She answered questions on the Boundary Commission Review. The Chair asked Councillor Dawson to clarify the last paragraph of her report in which she spoke of the Hadleigh Chamber being retained as an area for public art, lectures and exhibitions. Do you run a business from Layham?

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org. However, if you do not have access to a computer and would like a hard copy of the 'Welcome to Layham' booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk 07920 713940.

Parish Council The main points discussed at the meeting of Wednesday 21st June 2017 were: • Public Forum A parishioner expressed concern about an advertising sign that had appeared at the side of the road between Upper Layham and Hadleigh as she felt this could create a precedent; she would not like to see a proliferation of signs in the village. The Clerk had requested clarification from Babergh District Council on planning permission. Another parishioner had been in touch with Babergh District Council about the exterior lights at The Marquis, which he felt were intrusive and too bright; it was noted that other parishioners had also complained about the lights. It was agreed that the PC would discuss this issue in more detail at the July meeting. • Babergh District Council report Councillor Laing said he was still awaiting a response to his question about consultants’ fees relating to the council’s decision to sell the offices in Hadleigh and move to Endeavour House. He had also requested clarification on increases in councillors’ expenses. It was agreed that the Clerk should write formally to BDC. She would also invite Councillor Ward to explain his new role as the Economy portfolio holder at the next meeting. • Village Keeper It was agreed to ask Anthony Owers to edge the bottom half of the Green. When the work had been completed, it was suggested that the Green Team should seek volunteers to edge the other half. • Emergency Plan A questionnaire had been sent to all parishioners in 2014 to gather information on skills and equipment; however, since then some people had moved away and others had arrived in the village. It was therefore agreed to circulate another questionnaire in order to update the information held. The last training session for the Emergency Liaison Volunteers (ELVs) had been held in 2013; it was agreed that another session should be held later in 2017, for all ELVs and members of the PC. • Layham Local History Group The Chariman’s report on the recent ‘Weddings in Layham’ exhibition was noted – over £1000 had been raised for the church buildings fund. • Playing Field It was noted that visiting teenagers were causing damage to the playing field and leaving rubbish behind, as well as swimming in the river. The Playing Field Committee would be discussing what action could be taken. • Defibrillator for Brett Green The working group would bring a proposal on the next steps to the July meeting. In the meantime, the Clerk would ask BDC if permission was needed to erect a structure on which to mount the defibrillator cabinet and the Chairman would take advice on possible designs. • Water pipe bursts There was concern over the ongoing problem with water bursts at Dixie Corner, leading to regular road closures and inconvenience to parishioners, as well as affecting local businesses. The Clerk would contact Anglian Water to ask them to carry out a survey into why leaks were happening so frequently. Layham Parish Allotments The Parish Council administers a small number of allotments situated behind the bungalows in Gardeners Close. Occasionally one of these becomes available and if you would be interested in knowing when that happens then you should register your interest with Jane Cryer, Layham Parish Clerk who holds a waiting list. She can be contacted on email: layhampc@gmail.com or ‘phone: 07920 713940 48

The Parish Council would like to offer you free advertising on our Parish Website. It makes sense that Layham people should know of Layham businesses. If you are interested, contact Jane Cryer (Parish Clerk) on 07920 713940 or layhampc@gmail.com . This offer has been made before and only one person asked for details! St Andrew's - your Parish Church Services on Sundays in August 6th 9.15am Morning Worship 13th 9.15am Sung Eucharist 20th 9.30am Café Church 27th 9.15am Sung Eucharist at Shelley, No service at Layham Coffee, Cake and Chat Please join us at the church on Monday 7th and Monday 21st between 11 - 12.30 pm. If you are new to the village this is a great way to get to know people. Seven Swans a Swimming..... Every year a pair of swans takes up residence and raises a family of cygnets on and beside the River Brett in Layham. This year there are seven cygnets – more than ever before. They feed from the river and from the surrounding water meadows. As each day draws to a close they end up close to the mill when the parent swans have built a raft of vegetation for their brood to sleep upon. This is probably done as a defence against foxes – the combination of surrounding water and vigilant parents keeping the cygnets safe for the night. The family is remarkably tolerant of human visitors and it is well worth a look - round about 9pm, from the footpath beside the mill. It is possible, of course, that by the time this is published they will have moved on – but do have a look. Layham Playing Field 100 Club The winners of the June draw were: £25Ticket No 18 Laing, £15 Ticket No 42 Millman From the Village Archive The village archive contains a number of snapshots of social events that have taken place in past years. Unfortunately, it is frequently the case that nothing is written on the backs to identify the occasion.

There are several pictures of an event that took place at Water House Farm in (probably) the mid-1970s. The photo featured here is clearly of a fancy dress competition. The children are around ten years of age which would make them about 50 now. Can anyone help us with identities or the nature of the occasion? If so, please contact Michael Woods on 823798. Thank you.

Hadleigh Art Club News Hadleigh Art Club resumes weekly sessions on Tuesday afternoons at 2 o’clock on September 12th. News from Layham Village Hall The latest meeting was held on 3 July 2017 - it’s a busy time for the committee, with the 6 week summer holiday providing a good opportunity to complete some jobs on the job list. Watch this space for some planned upgrades! A reminder that the hall will be out of action for a period of one week between 27th July to 3 August 2017 because the wooden floor is going to be re-sanded and sealed. As a result of the new floor we need to change the chairs / chair feet to minimise scratching. Unable to find anyone locally who needs them, the old chairs will going to a UK charity that sends old educational furniture, like the plastic chairs, over to schools in Congo, Ghana and Mozambique that desperately need them. Over 700,000 tons of educational material like this usually just goes to UK landfill each year - so we’re keeping them out of the ground and finding them a worthy home. Next meeting is Monday 4 September 7.30pm if there are anyone has any ideas or suggestions they wish to submit. Bookings are made through Richard Groom on 01473 822220 Hall hire fee is £7 an hour.

This is when we seek reassurance and the need to talk about our fears. At the Hadleigh Healing Society we, the qualified, registered healers, are there for you to share your concerns, in confidence. Do not feel that you are over re-acting because help is there for you. Please telephone 01473 823282 (answer machine) of log onto www.hadleighealingsociety.org for an appointment. We are having another Clairvoyant Day, back by popular request on the 16th September , 10am – 4pm. There will be three mediums who can give a 20 minute private reading for £15. If you would like an appointment please book early because from previous Clairvoyant Days the appointments get taken quickly. Ring early so as not to be disappointed

Hadleigh Orchestra Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Lisa Patchett Thank to the many people who attended our summer concert in June in St. Mary’s. Some people may have wondered why we did not use the organ for the Handel Organ concerto. Unfortunately it was a matter of tuning: the organ is tuned too high for the wind to be able to reach up to it so we had to use the keyboard. The one consolation of doing this is that we could use the harpsichord stop on it as well as the organ stop. I am glad to say that our conductor was much better next day and is now fine. Thanks you for your generous donations – as a result we were able to give St. Mary’s a cheque for £150. Rehearsals will begin again in preparation for our Christmas Concert on Monday Sept. 18th. We have vacancies in all departments except flute and would be especially grateful for more violinists. We meet on Monday evening 7.30 – 9.30 p.m. at Beaumont Community school. If you would like to know more, please give me a ring on 01473 82724. John Druce (Chairman, Hadleigh Orchestra)

Residents Newsletter July 2017 Report by District Cllr Dr Siân Dawson (Hadleigh North Ward) Introduction This is an interesting period in the Babergh Conservative administration as the process and governance change decisions that were taken in the last 2 years are now being implemented. Governance Arrangements After the Babergh AGM in May 17 we moved to a Cabinet governance arrangement. Seven Cabinet Members have been appointed with stronger powers of decision (responsibility) and authority. This will enable decision making quicker and easier although the power of decision making will rest in the hands of a smaller group of Councillors, however this will be monitored through a strong Scrutiny Committee. NB Any member of the public can now attend Cabinet Meetings in Endeavour House, Ipswich as from September 2017, further details can be found on line. Babergh/Mid-Suffolk Move to Endeavour House Ipswich The move will take place in the middle of the year and be completed by September 2017. With a shared back office Officer support arrangement, this should make us more efficient as we will sit alongside our County Council colleagues and money will be saved by not having 2 half empty District Council buildings. However, the move will be challenging although we will ensure that support arrangements are put in place so that constituents do not have to go to Ipswich if they wish to meet with Council Officers. The 2 main support offices (Sudbury & Stowmarket) will be manned 5 days a week with a small staff in place from 9am to 5pm. In addition, there will be about 9 other locations including Hadleigh where residents can ask to meet Council Officers rather than travel to Ipswich. These will not be manned but booked as and when required. Disposal of Corks Lane HQ Our selected architect Purcell of Colchester have been recommended for disposal solution for the current HQ building. I do not want to find ourselves in a situation a year from now where we are presented with a “fait accompliâ€? – this must be addressed now to agree to a way forward if not the final solution. I would like to request that the Hadleigh Town Council write to the Leader and CEO of Babergh requesting that the Chamber be retained as an exhibition or lecture hall for the residents of Hadleigh. This should be a positive consideration by Babergh as the disposal is not popular with residents. Boundary Commission As I have briefed previously, the Boundary Commission (BC) is looking at the number of District Councillors that we have in Babergh DC. Currently we have 43, but the Chief Executive has advised the BC that we require only 31 to populate the various committees that are needed to manage day to day business. The Boundary Commission unsurprisingly has accepted the number 31 (effective for next District Council elections in 2019) and as an Administration we will now try to get our heads round a new Ward structure with 31 District Councillors, each one with responsibility for representing 2388 electors. It is likely that there will be changes within Hadleigh, our current number is 6804 residents so it is likely we will be reduced from 4 to 3 Councillors. As well as Councillors, every member of the Babergh registered voting public is entitled to express a view on boundary restructuring. This can be done by accessing the Babergh website (search for “Babergh Boundary Commissionâ€?) for advice how this can be done. Consultation period finishes on 14th August. The new boundaries will be effective in May 2019, the date of the next Babergh DC elections. Housing – Private Sector As I have reported previously, we are not building nowhere near the number of private sector houses that are required for our growing population in Babergh. However, I will remain strongly in favour of “right typeâ€?, “right placeâ€? and “right numberâ€? as we look at individual planning applications. However, we now have the added complication of Babergh no longer having a 5-year supply of building land and this tilts the balance in favour of planning applications for developments in both our towns and villages. f you are a regular reader you may well have heard about groups run by Suffolk Bereavement Support but you may be wondering what joining a group is like. Taking that first step can be difficult, so I'll try to explain a little more. Group members have a variety of experiences of bereavement. Some have lost a child or grandchild, others a spouse, partner, close friend, or parent. Some members have children, and are helping them to adjust at the same time as trying to do so themselves. Some find an accumulation of past and recent bereavements have taken their toll. These are all familiar scenarios which the group facilitators seek to address. The groups attract interest from quite a wide age range and are open to anyone over the age of 18. New members are most welcome, the themes and support of the groups being applicable to most situations. An evening group is available for those with daytime commitments. Although most members live within the Babergh district some come from further afield to the venues in Hadleigh and Capel St Mary. Groups are free and open to Suffolk residents. The groups offer a safe place to express reactions to loss without fear of being judged and to learn more about the process of bereavement and recovery. For more details please contact Margaret or Patrick Palmer who will be very pleased to help: www.suffolkbereavement.org.uk; sbsg246@gmail.com; 01206 299832. P.S. Look out for more updates in future editions.

The HTC men’s team are closing in on winning their division in the Summer league and promotion should follow. Our ladies are without two of their strongest players from last year so it has been a challenging Summer so far but all good experience for next year! A most enjoyable afternoon was passed at the annual bar-b-q in the middle Sunday of Wimbledon so at that time hopes were high for British success at the Championships. Sadly it was not to be! The Club participated in the “Great British Tennis Weekend” on 2 July. The event was designed to promote tennis in the UK and was open to anyone to come to the Club and have a knock of tennis. Mary-Claire Tweedy (see below) ran a fun session for the young ones while Club members ran through drills and tasters with the adults. Everyone enjoyed the experience and the children went away with goodie bags, so smiles all round. We love to see folks giving tennis try and invite prospective players to our Club sessions throughout the year. During British Summer Time there are three informal Club Play sessions per week: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sundays from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. The Club Play also continues in Winter on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings. The 3 floodlit all weather courts are on Layham Road next to the rugby club. Through the Summer Mary-Claire Tweedy runs her Junior Coaching sessions. Marie Claire is an LTA qualified coach and keen to help youngsters in the Hadleigh area to develop their tennis skills. For more information call MaryClaire on 07946 746126 or email mctweedy@hotmail.com Finally a correction from last month’s report; brain fade on my part got our President’s name wrong! Peter Richards is our President who presented the trophies at the last two Club competitions. If you have any general queries or would like details of membership please email hadleightennis@gmail.com, or call or text (preferred) Bryan Walls on 07714 484842

Discovering the roots of a big hitting victorian batsman The discovery of a tankard presented to a cricketer more than a century ago has led to the uncovering of 300 years of his family’s history. Farmer William “Slogger” Hart was a big hitting batsman, but nearing the end of his cricketing career when marrying for the first time at the age of 45. His fellow members of Sudbury Cricket Club marked the occasion by giving him a sold silver tankard, which has recently returned to the club’s ownership. Initial inquiries into the life of William Allen Hart revealed his association with life in the Boxford area, the home of cricket club supporter Roger Prosser. Having written an extensive document based on the genealogy of his own family, he decided to investigate the life of Hart – and finished up delving back to 1701. The family line stretched as far away as Scotland and Ireland, and is now all included in a 32-page book written by Roger and published by the cricket club. Hart’s career as a Sudbury cricketer, and his family background which led him to leave Scotland as a young man to help his uncle farm at Edwardstone, are covered in the publication now on sale through the club for £5. Roger has also traced Hart’s surviving family, with particular help coming from his great grandson now living in Spain. The author admits the publication is considerably larger than was imagined when he started his investigations, which included the discovery that Hart was also an inventor, having patented the design for a paddle boat in 1902. Roger added: “I confess the outcome of the urge to know more of the history of a simple tankard has exceeded the imagination of the cricket club’s original expectations, but once started, a trail has to be followed!” Club chairman, Louis Brooks, added: “The club has produced a number of significant works on its history in recent times, and Roger Prosser’s work represents an important addition to our previous knowledge.”

Jed Seeley retains his Newton Title Jed Seeley has retained the Newton Green Golf Club championship title with a level par score in the 36-hole event. Scratch golfer Seeley holds the course record at 63 for 18 holes, and had a one over par on 70 in his morning round. The round had started with five birdies in seven holes. His course record looked in danger, but Seeley could not keep up the blistering opening. Close behind him in the morning by one shot was Simon Bearman, but he slipped to a 74 after lunch, while Seeley was recording a one under second round 68. Former champion Russell Oakey, who had scored 74 in the morning, came home with a one under par 68 in the afternoon for second place, which allowed him to edge out Bearman by one shot. Scores: 138 Jed Seeley, 144 Russell Oakey, 145 Simon Bearman, 147 James Cooper, 149 Tom King, 153 Ian Woodhead, 154 Max Hemson, 158 BenTatum, 165 Kieron Sorrell.

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh manager Stuart Alston and his management team were congratulated by Chairman Rolf Beggerow at the Annual General Meeting. Alston, assisted by Andrew Crisp, had finished last season strongly and also praise went to all the players. This was mainly due to getting involved in club activities, more than teams in previous years. It was also stated by the chairman that it is hoped that extra support would be forthcoming on Sundays this season when Ladies and Veterans teams would be playing at the Millfield. A vacancy is available for a club photographer to be on duty at matches while help is required for a number of tasks at home games. Apply to the club. Last season a number of Friday night matches proved successful and it is expected that selected local games will be moved back a day in the forthcoming campaign. A good thing is to see the Millfield playing surface looking in splendid condition at the present time. Much hard work has gone in to maintaining the pitch and other aspects of the ground during the summer. The interior of the dressing rooms look particularly impressive. The pre-season friendlies at the Millfield attracted good crowds with the youth game against Cornard ending all square at four apiece in a thriller. Prize winners in the monthly draw were Margaret Watts and Paul Bray. The Ground Improvement winner was Chris Towel.

Hadleigh United Fixtures First team fixtures for Hadleigh United begin on Saturday 5th August with a home match in the F.A Cup against Essex side Sporting Bengal. League matches begin on Saturday 12th at home to Newmarket before a home match against Wivenhoe on Tuesday 15th. The following Tuesday 22nd we go to Stowmarket while a home game sees Fakenham at the Millfield on Saturday 26th. A busy August ends on Bank Holiday Monday 28th against Clacton at Hadleigh. The Reserves have a few friendly matches in August but league matches do not begin until September. Our youth team begin league games at home to Stowmarket on Wednesday 9th. A trip follows to Leiston on Thursday 24th before Needham come to the millfield on Wednesday 30th. Terry Adams

Lady Captain’s Day – 6th July 2017 Thursday, 6th July was Lady Captain’s Day at Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club. There was a question mark over what the weather was going to do as storms had been forecast but after a few spots of rain the sky cleared and a lovely warm sunny day was enjoyed. Ladies’ Captain, Anne Hemmings arrived in style on her decorated buggy. Her them for the day was Horse and Hound, bright colours and bling. The ladies greeted her in the usual style of her walking through a line of them, usually holding a golf club although on this occasion many held riding crops. The ladies played an 18 holes golf competition which Anne had chosen. They played in teams of four with a reverse waltz on the front 9, three scores, two scores one score to count, then they all had a yellow ball for the back 9 Stableford where the yellow ball counted for double points. Vouchers were sold at the sign in and when presented to him, golf professional Josh hit the ladies shot over the 10thGainsborough lake onto the green for them. He only missed two shots all day, one from behind trees and another which was a yellow ball which hit a tree and bounced back into the water. Well done Josh. The halfway hut was manned by Anne and her husband, Brian, where tasty treats, savoury and sweet were on offer to the hungry golfers after they played their first 9 holes. Everyone then enjoyed a meal, followed by speeches and gifts given to Anne from the Ladies Section of an autograph book signed by them all, white gold earring and a silver cross and chain. A fun award was given to Betty Cox as best costumewith her doggy nose and ears she looked every inch the canine buddy. A gift of a tube of golf balls was also given to Mal Went and Janet Hodge who had managed to play to the 5thround of the Daily Mail Foursomes, no mean feat. As a surprise, Anne then presented an Oscar to the cast of Cinderella, the pantomime presented to the ladies at Christmas. The panto had, had everyone in fits of laughter at Christmastime and Anne felt something to remember it by was most appropriate. Diana Harris, Lady Vets Captain who played Cinderella was on holiday but had sent a ‘thank you’ speech in true Hollywood style with hoards of ‘thank you’s’ of her own which also caused much laughter at Thursday’s event. Anne and Diana’s charity, Suffolk MIND, raised well over £200 on the day through vouchers for Josh hitting over the lake and a Voucher from another club for a team of golfers.
