Come Garden with Us!

Do you fancy getting out in the fresh air and helping to look after our local park in Sudbury? If so, you will be very welcome – and no gardening experience is necessary.

The flower garden at Belle Vue Park is tended by our volunteer group, which is co-ordinated by the charity ActivGardens, and we meet come rain or shine at 09:30 every Thursday. We are a friendly group of individuals who like to be out in the garden and most of us don’t want to miss a week! We have a tea break and a natter at about 11:00 and pack away at 12:00.

There are some very knowledgeable gardeners in the group and others who just come to enjoy some lawn edge trimming, flower deadheading and leaf sweeping, under the guidance of the others. We are supported by Babergh and Mid-Suffolk Council and are looking forward to getting a new

battery-operated lawn mower in the spring – so if you like to mow grass we’d like to see you!

The garden used to be attached to Belle Vue House, which is awaiting development of some kind. It has been a popular community space for many years and has developed into an exemplar of droughtresistant gardening on our very free-draining valleyedge soils. Even after the drought and extreme temperatures of summer 2022 most of the plants did well and our long borders were full and colourful. (Of interest to referral organisations: we have limited capacity for supervision and all our flower beds are at ground level.)

If you’re interested in joining us, please call me for a chat on 07899 994107.

Plan for the future, protect your interests and preserve your wealth

Property Life Interest Trust Wills are becoming increasingly popular among couples due to the desire to preserve family assets for younger generations. But many are not familiar with these types of Wills or realise their benefit until speaking with a solicitor.

Property Life Interest Trust Wills can be of particular benefit to couples considering planning for future care and preservation of assets. Specialist advice on Property Life Interest Trust Wills can provide for both protecting the financial position and living arrangements of the surviving spouse, as well as protecting assets for future generations. For couples with children from a previous relationship, Property Life Interest Trust Wills can also prove an effective legal solution.

Taking advice and making early decisions to plan effectively

It is often the case that a couple’s main asset is their family home, and many are conscious of this when considering planning their estate and inheritance for their loved ones. However, many couples can limit their ability to effectively plan and preserve their estate, or limit their available options for this, if planning their estate is left too late. This is certainly the case in respect of how their home will be treated upon death. The earlier advice is sought, the better in this regard.

How your property is owned is important

Property can be held jointly in one of two ways. Property held as “Joint Tenants” will pass automatically to the surviving owner under survivorship rules whereas, property held as “Tenants in Common” will pass under the terms of a Will. For couples to effectively plan their estate, it is often necessary for their main residence to be owned as Tenants in Common, providing each with a % share ownership which can be directed into a Trust upon death.

What is a Property Life Interest Trust Will and what does it do?

A solicitor is able to re-organise a couple’s ownership of a property alongside preparing a Will for you, so as to ring fence each individual’s property share in a Trust for future generations and identified beneficiaries. The surviving spouse/partner is protected by having a lifetime right of residence in the property and can be one of the trustees (managers) of the Trust.

Therefore, the gift of your respective share in your principal residence at death is made to your trustees on trust and is subject to the surviving spouse/partner’s right to live in the property for their lifetime. The Trust can be flexible in that the surviving spouse/partner will be able to move to another property using all or part of the value of the property. Any surplus capital not used in the purchase of a new property can be invested and the income can be paid to the surviving spouse/partner for their lifetime. The surviving spouse or partner can decide to make gifts to the family if they do not need the surplus capital or income.

Property Life Interest Trust Wills are very flexible, with the surviving spouse/partner even able to rent out the property and receive the rental income.

These types of Wills and arrangements can often be recommended where couples (married or unmarried) wish to plan for future care and preservation of assets for future generations and/or provide for children from a previous relationship, whilst at the same time providing security and peace of mind to the surviving spouse/partner.

Speak to an expert from Holmes & Hills Solicitors

It is always a good idea to take advice when thinking about planning for the future, planning your estate and planning for care. When considering whether Life Interest Trust Wills are appropriate for your circumstances and wishes, your solicitor will also consider your Inheritance Tax position. As mentioned, it is advisable to seek advice sooner rather than later to ensure all legal solutions and options remain available to you. For expert advice on planning for the future, contact Holmes & Hills on 01787 275275 or email advice@holmes-hills.co.uk and organise to speak with one of our specialists from your local Holmes & Hills office.

Babergh District Council considers its options over future of key sites in Sudbury

Babergh District Council is considering its next steps over the future of key sites near the centre of Sudbury.

It is assessing its options around the derelict Belle Vue House and the adjacent former swimming pool site.

A land sale agreement was previously reached with Churchill Retirement Living, which would have seen Belle Vue House converted into two homes and a comprehensive redevelopment of the adjacent old swimming pool site into retirement accommodation.

The Council’s cabinet has previously decided that proceeds from the sale would fund Babergh’s own plans to transform the Belle Vue Park entrance – creating a more accessible and visible gateway to the town centre with the future addition of a café and toilets.

However, in September, Churchill’s planning application was rejected. The sale of the land was conditional on planning approval, and the deadline for a revised application has now passed.

As a result, the council will be assessing its options for the future of the sites. Due to the current condition of Belle Vue House and given there was previously significant interest from developers in restoring the building, the council is committed to finding a new owner for the house as soon as possible in 2023.

It will also be engaging with stakeholders and the local community about possible next steps for the vacant old swimming pool site.

Cllr John Ward, council leader and cabinet member for economic growth, said: “Our ambition to regenerate Belle Vue House and the adjacent site is an important part of wider vision for Sudbury. It is right that we continue to seek the best possible solution for the town, the council and local community - and also obtain the finances to afford this.

“We understand there are extremely difficult economic conditions, however, the council is still committed to delivering its approved plans for park accessibility and activity improvements.”

Writing from the Rectory

As I write today the rain is falling heavily, it is dark and cold and I have reached that time in the year when I am done with winter. It can be easy to be downcast in this weather, but as we look around there are signs of spring and new life – the first of the blossom on the trees, the bulbs shooting up with promise of crocuses and daffodils.

‘The new dawn blooms as we free it For there is always light, If only we are brave enough to see it; If only we are brave enough to be it.’

These words form part of the wonderful poem written by the teenager Amanda Gorman which she read at President Biden’s inauguration. It brings such hope; spring will always follow winter, there will always be light if we search for it. She also talks of finding the courage to be that light – as Jesus was a light in the darkness so we are called to share that light of hope in this world.

February in the church calendar usually heralds the start of Lent –those 40 days leading up to Easter, marking the 40 days that Christ spent fasting in the desert. Many of us will enjoy the tradition of pancakes on Shrove Tuesday before trying to give up something for the following days. It is a time for us to reflect, perhaps to consider our wellbeing, and I encourage you to look at taking up something positive during this time as an alternative to giving something up. Whether you choose to commit to a spot of daily exercise on our beautiful water meadows or a chat on a Saturday at our local church coffee mornings; Lent does not need to be arduous – why not let it be a time where you look after yourself, be that physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually? I would love to welcome you to St Gregory’s or All Saints’ if you would like to nurture your spiritual self in this time.

In the words of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, ‘Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness’. I pray that you find that light this month, and that you can be that light to others.

Pat’s Days Owt

I wish you all a very happy and Healthy new year and hope you kept well and enjoyed yourselves over the Christmas and New Year too. Ron and I had visits to family, and had several birthdays as well as Christmas joys together, so I had a very lazy time, and lots of lovely presents too.

We had a lovely 5 day holiday = Turkey and Tinsel (|Christmas held before Christmas time) at Weston Super Mare, so much so we are returning again in March. The female staff and food cannot be faulted, cooked by the only man.

I am sorry to say, the coach trips are starting with a cancellation as very few booked for the January one. As I write, I do have just 2 seats available for the Adult panto on 8th February.

March 27 - 31 we have a 5 day holiday visit to Weston Super Mare again, with 3 different trips during the week. We are very well looked after there by a happy family of ladies, good food, and evening entertainment included. Sadly, as usual, the single rooms are booked very quickly, and unless someone backs out, all single rooms are booked, worth trying though), but still have twin and double rooms available.

19th April we are booked for Winchester

17th May - a trip[ to Brighton

Later in the year we hope to do Wrexham and River Cruise, Dunwich and Southwold, and Hunstanton. For further details, you should be able to get a copy from the Town Hall for the Tourist Information. Sadly, owing to too many bookings having been cancelled at the last minute without having been paid so from now on the coach company want me to collect money with the booking please, - either cash or cheque paid to Pat Bennett, or P.M. Bennett please. As usual, it is the few who spoil it for the many.

To book, please call Pat Bennett on 01787 310982 or 22patron24 @gmail.com

I look forward to your booking, and seeing you on the coach again

Charity Bingo

We want to take the opportunity this month to talk about a local fundraiser. As a Bury based charity covering 280,000 square miles of Suffolk, it can be hard to reach you all and it’s fundraisers like these fantastic people, that allow us to get our message out to you all.

Tracy Tatum has been fundraising for My WiSH Charity for many years now, starting with a Christmas bazaar at the snooker club in Sudbury.

Jump on to 2023 and Tracy and her family, including husband Panto, are still here fundraising with a monthly bingo, My WiSH Charity Bingo, at the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard as well as a Christmas craft fair. The only time the bingo has stopped was during Covid and, once they restarted, it was quite clear how important this evening is to not only raise funds but to ensure the community get out of their homes and meet others. The time and effort put in by all of Tracy’s family is amazing and we cannot thank them enough for their continued support. They make a difference to so many people.

To date the My WiSH Charity Bingo team have raised over £11,741. This has helped us build a cardiac diagnostic unit, care for our palliative patients, and provide a specialist machine for patients with breast cancer. All invaluable additions to the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and we couldn’t have done it without donations like this.

If you love a bit of bingo do pop along. Everyone is welcome. There are refreshments available and it’s a great evening.

My WiSH Charity Bingo takes place on the last Saturday of each month with doors opening at 6.30pm. Follow them on Facebook, @mywishcharitybingo.

Anglia degrees offered in Bury St Edmunds

Over the last two years, an exciting partnership between University Studies at West Suffolk College (USWSC) and the University of East Anglia (UEA) has seen a range of UEA-validated degrees delivered at the Bury St Edmunds campus. Growing from strength to strength with a commitment to supporting learners of all kinds to find their place, USWSC are proud to offer two new degrees in Business and Management and Computing from September 2023*. These programmes follow an already exciting range of subjects and specialisms across Health and Social Sciences, Engineering and Construction, Creative Technologies and Humanities.

By choosing a degree with USWSC, students will benefit from all the support of a local collegiate environment with the academic rigour of a top 30 UK University and as a result, achieve a globally-recognised UEAaward. With the option of studying a full-time program over two days per week, these courses aim to allow students the option of working alongside their studies to save money whilst advancing their careers and staying at home to achieve their degree.

When commenting on University Studies, Executive Dean, Dr. Elspeth Lees, said: “Whatever your age, your background or commitments, whether you’re a college leaver or a caregiver, a late bloomer or a career changer, we want you to be able to access excellent academic expertise in the context of outstanding care and support. We’re proud to focus on students and their differences.”

Applications are open now to apply to study at University Studies, West Suffolk College from this September. For anyone that has already applied to study at university through UCAS and has used all five choices but does not yet hold offers, you will be eligible to use UCAS Extra between 23 February and 4 July 2023.

If you are yet to visit the outstanding facilities at University Studies, there is an Open Event on Saturday 4 March from 9.30am to 12.30pm, offering taster sessions, demonstrations and campus tours so that you can get a feel for life at USWSC. For those needing extra support, there will be personal statement workshops and application process sessions during the event, giving you the opportunity to ask questions in a friendly and open environment. With smaller class sizes and higher than average ratio of lecturers to students, the experience you will witness at the Open Event will be a taster of the warm and welcoming nature of studying at USWSC. Rotary Round-up

With a very successful Christmas Tree Festival, a street collection (on Christmas Eve) for local charities, celebration lunch and several fascinating speakers behind them, Sudbury Rotary members are now looking forward to the New Year’s activities.

On 6 February, one of the international scholars sponsored by Rotary and studying this year at Cambridge University will be telling us more about work on his MPhil in Development Studies. Ben Corson, from the USA, is being hosted by the Saffron Walden Rotary Club and will be accompanied by Tim Boydon, who is an Assistant Governor for Rotary District 1080 this year. International scholars are always inspirational and we look forward to hearing how Ben’s studies will focus on societal change which will benefit many people.

News was received a few weeks’ ago about the two primary children in East Meru, Tanzania, whose schooling has been supported financially by Sudbury Rotary to ensure they have a good start to their education. Both children, Peter Prosper and Loveness are making excellent progress with their studies and each created a card with Christmas Greetings which was sent to us. Sudbury Rotary will continue to sponsor the school into the future, and is delighted to learn that they have been able to build a library, which is used not only by the children at East Meru Primary School but also by secondary school pupils, because it has electricity which means they can study into the evening, when the school day is over. Most homes do not have electricity!

The search now begins for this year’s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards candidate to be supported by the Sudbury Club. This is an opportunity for a young person to spend a week at Grafham Water in Cambridgeshire. The criteria for selection are that the candidate should be between 18 and 26 on 1 September 2023 and be willing to undertake activities out of their normal comfort zone, taking part in team-building, team-working and leadership activities, meeting challenges and gaining confidence as an individual. The course will take place between 26 August and 2 September 2023. If a local school or business would like to recommend a potential candidate, or a local company would be interested in sponsoring a young person to attend this course, please do contact David Taylor, Sudbury Rotary Club’s Secretary: secretary@sudburyrotary.com.

Meantime, Sudbury Rotary has agreed to sponsor two of the Hive Young Volunteer Awards, for which a ceremony is planned in March.

We are now looking forward to seeing the purple crocus in flower near the Croft. These bulbs were planted by Rotary members as a reminder of the ‘Purple for Polio’ international campaign to eradicate this crippling and often fatal disease across the whole world by helping to fund a vaccination programme. The disease is still classified as endemic in Afghanistan and Pakistan but in most countries the disease has been eradicated. However, with the virus being identified in sewage works in London in 2022 (although no cases of the disease have been detected or confirmed) this demonstrates how essential it is that everyone continues to be vaccinated against polio to ensure it does not return to devastate lives anywhere in the world.

Rotary is open to people from all backgrounds and we would welcome more of you to join us. Unlike the image which you might have of your local Rotarians, we are not a group of serious, professional, older gentlemen in suits(!), but a mix of women and men of all ages and interests. The one thing which brings us together is our wish to support our community, here and through overseas projects, and to enjoy fun and friendship while doing so.

Sudbury Rotary meets at Newton Green Golf Club on the first three Mondays of each month - with an optional lunch, gives an opportunity for us to hear from speakers on topics of interest, follow up on matters concerned with our activities, and to enjoy each other’s company. Visitors are always welcome, but please do telephone 07341 290415 to let us know you will be coming along. Check out more information about the Club at www.sudburyrotary.com.

I appreciate that cost of living pressures will remain a key concern for most readers. In terms of the Government’s response, we are providing direct support with energy bills but also addressing the underlying cause, i.e., higher inflation, driven by Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. Regarding support, typical households will have received around £1300 help this winter, through the Energy Price Guarantee (estimated to be worth £900) and £400 Energy Bill Support.

Of course, not every household is ‘typical’, and many South Suffolk constituents use heating oil, but I can confirm we are making available a £200 ‘Alternative Fuel’ payment for such households, which should be paid automatically in February through your electricity supplier. I can also confirm that the Energy Price Guarantee will continue into April, supporting most households with an estimated further benefit of around £500, together with additional cost of living payments for pensioners and those on benefits.

As to the bigger picture, the Prime Minister started the new year by announcing his target to halve inflation by the end of the year. This doesn’t mean that in the months ahead the price of things you buy will fall by 50%. Rather, it means that as a Government we will work hard to ensure our ‘fiscal’ policies (i.e., decisions on tax and spend) work as closely as possible with the independent Bank of England to keep a lid on pressure that might otherwise leave prices higher for longer.

In particular, this is about good housekeeping – running our national public finances in a responsible fashion, which is why we’ve had to take difficult decisions on certain taxes, freezing some for the time being. However, we have done this in a compassionate way, ensuring that we keep borrowing down but still providing billions more in funding for the NHS and schools, whilst of course delivering the extensive support with energy bills.

Finally, we need to look to the future and focus anew on local economic growth. Our unemployment rate remains very low – a blessing in such challenging times – and in fact most local businesses are struggling to recruit. This is why on Friday 17th February, I will be holding my next constituency Jobs’ Fair at Hadleigh High School, with over 40 exhibitors including: engineering firms; retail and logistics; public sector employers (e.g., the NHS and police); plus colleges and further education providers. Full details on the facing page.

Hello February!

Make sure you can help your partner or a parent, should they need assistance

Sudbury Library

This month we have changed things around a little. Our Timeout Tuesday session has been moved to Monday mornings at 10am. So, if you want to join a book group (part of our Toptime offer on the first Monday of each month) or just call in for a natter and a hot drink, please come along. Donations are welcome but there is no obligation. On Wednesdays we have a Shared Reading Group open to all. Thursdays we have Open Space from 2:15pm if you are interested in having a friendly chat about wellbeing, a relaxed group where you can meet new people, have a chat, make new friends, or just listen in with word puzzles and colouring if you prefer — there is no pressure to take part!

The Hearing Aid Clinic is back! On the 3rd Monday of each month, (the next is 20th Feb), you can come along to pick up new batteries. You will need to make an appointment if it is for a hearing-aid repair. Ring 01473 286060 to book.

73% of people think IF a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. similarly, 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can't make them yourself*. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Should your spouse/partner or parent become unable to manage their affairs themselves due to ill-health or injury, their individual bank accounts are likely to be effectively frozen and neither a partner nor next of kin will be able to deal with organisations on their behalf. For example, this would mean being unable to deal with financial institutions in respect of accounts and pensions, the Department for Work and Pensions, or utility companies. Similarly, a next of kin will not be able to make decisions regarding the health and welfare of a spouse/partner, parent or other relative, including where and what care should be provided, as well as what end of life care should be received, if any.

What is needed to be able to help?

To assist your spouse/partner, parent or other relative with affairs during their lifetime, or make certain decisions you will need to have been appointed as an Attorney. This means they will need to have made Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs).

Common reasons for needing to help

Often people need to assist with these matters because their spouse/partner, parent or relative has become unable to manage their affairs themselves. This may be due to physical or mental incapacity, perhaps due to illness or an accident.

What happens if LPAs are not in place?

Please also consider our home library service which is available for anyone who loves to read but cannot get to the library, perhaps because they have a disability or mobility issue. This service is run by volunteers who pick up books, audio books or DVDs from the library and take them to customers in their own homes. It provides a lifeline for many older and disabled people across Suffolk who also benefit from the regular social interaction too. Volunteers can visit private homes or care homes. All our volunteers have completed an application, reference and DBS checking process, and a training programme. If you, a relative, or friend would benefit from the service, contact hls@suffolklibraries.co.uk or 01473 351249 or let us know at Sudbury library and we will pass the details along to our home library service co-ordinator.

If you want to help your partner or parent with property, financial, health or welfare decisions and they do not have Powers of Attorney in place and were incapable of making them, you would need to make a costly application to the Court to obtain the necessary authority. The Court application takes several months and can be stressful and frustrating for those involved. Until the Court authorises your application you are unable to deal with the persons money or property, and will be unable to make decisions regarding their health and welfare.

For children: - Wordplay storytelling, songs, and rhymes is for our smallest customers on a Thursday morning at 10.30am.

Stay and Play sessions follow immediately afterwards till midday. We have Storytime sessions for children on Saturday mornings from 10.30am. Lego club is on Saturday afternoons at 2.30pm. (50p per child). Our monthly Children’s Book Group will meet on Saturday 4th February at 11am. This month we’ll be discussing “Mold and the Poison Plot” by Lorraine Gregory. The next book will be Anne of Green Gables by L.M.Montgomery. We also have free activities on our Sunday Fundays.

What are the two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney?

Suffolk Libraries is a charity and the money we raise helps us continue to offer all the activities we do across the county. We have activity packs, bookmarks and more for sale; call in to see what’s available.

LPAs are important documents that allow someone to give people (often close relatives or friends) the authority to make certain decisions on their behalf. There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney:

• Property and Financial Affairs LPA – which allows an attorney to manage and deal with finances and property related matters (such as selling a home).

Our opening hours are 9am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sundays and we offer printing, photocopying, laminating, scanning to e-mail and use of our computers, plus free Wi-Fi, and space to use your own devices.

We can be found in the usual places: - www.suffolklibraries.co.uk or on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

• Health and Welfare LPA – which allows an attorney to make decisions regarding health and personal welfare. This type of LPA only comes into effect when a person no longer has the capacity to make such decisions themselves. Discuss Powers of Attorney for yourself, a partner or parent

Don’t forget, our colleagues at Babergh Customer Access Point are here on Mondays and Thursdays for face-to-face advice; drop in or call 0300 1234000 if you want to book a specific time. Their e-mail address is customer.services@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk

We look forward to seeing you soon, Andrea and everyone at Sudbury Library.

February Advice Column

As the weather has turned colder, I’ve noticed mould and damp in our flat. It’s mainly in our bedroom, including some black mould on the carpet. I’ve been chasing our letting agency, who say they’ll speak to our landlord.

I’m really worried about how this might affect our health. Our tenancy agreement isn’t up for eight months, what can I do?

It’s good that you’ve already raised the issue with your letting agency. Unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to work out the cause of mould or damp This can make it difficult to work out if your landlord is responsible, unless there’s an obvious cause, like a leaking roof.

There are many causes of damp that properties can get. The most common are rising, penetrating, construction and condensation damp. On our website www.citizensadvice.org.uk there is information that may help you work out what type of damp you have, who is responsible and what you can do. Check your tenancy agreement too for mentions of repairs and damp and reach out to Citizens Advice on anything you’re unsure about.

A landlord will have to act in relation to damp if it makes the property unsafe for someone to live in. This could be for example, if it is making the tenant or a member of their family ill. The landlord will also be responsible if the damp is related to repairs they should have carried out, like if heaters are broken. If the damp has damaged items that the landlord is responsible for, such as carpets and window frames, they’ll likely have to cover the cost of repairs.

One of the most common causes of damp is condensation. To prevent this, it’s important to keep homes well-heated and well-ventilated, but for a lot of people this will be trickier to do given the colder weather and higher heating costs. You may be eligible for help to insulate and heat your home and should visit our website to find out more.

On our website we also have advice on things that can make damp worse and may impact the landlord taking responsibility for repairs. These include drying clothes on heaters or blocking air vents.

If your landlord is responsible for the damp in your property but doesn’t act, there are steps you can take, such as reporting them to the local authority. If you’re in social housing, you might also be able to use the landlord’s formal complaints procedure. There is more information about this on our website. If it reaches the point where you want to get out of a fixed term tenancy agreement early, do speak to an adviser first, as there might be better ways to approach the issue.

For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www. citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact

Facts And Figures From The Past

I had considered writing about the children from this area who were sent to Canada, Australia in the Nineteenth Century by the governments of that period. However, I need to dig deeper, so put back for another time. As part of my research, I found some other interesting and humorous items. And, let’s face it, we all need something to cheer us up at the moment. I hope some of these will be of interest.

When children didn’t have a formal education, could read, or even have a book in the house, many rhymes and songs were passed on from generation to generation. Just as children today enjoy books such as those written by Julia Donaldson for example, The ‘Gruffalo,’ ‘Room on the Broom’, ‘The Snail on the Whale’ because they rhyme. Rhyme seems to appeal to a child as something funny and is easier to remember. These are some examples: ‘Do you want a sweet?’ ‘Suck your feet’. ‘Do you want a jelly?’, ‘Rub your Belly’. Especially if they were considered cheeky and they made them laugh, e.g. ‘A bug and a flea went out to sea upon a reel of cotton; the flea was drowned, but the bug was found biting a lady’s bottom’.

‘Mother made seedy cake, gave us all a belly ache; Father gave us some of his beer, it gave us all the diarrhoea’.

On Valentine’s Day there were many rhymes and traditions. Girls believed that the first lad they saw on that morning would eventually become their future husband.

So, they would be blindfolded and ask a friend to walk them in case they walked by someone totally unsuitable. Young men also considered it unlucky to speak to a young lady before midday as it would bring bad luck. In Stuart times the diarist Pepys recounted how his wife as a young woman would shade her eyes all morning to prevent her seeing an unsuitable lad. Some common verses such as these were used:

‘Plenty of love, tons of kisses, hope someday to be your Mrs. My love is like a cabbage divided into two, the leaves I give to others, but my heart I give to you’.

For centuries Shrove Tuesday (which is on 21st February this year) was a day of high festival especially for apprentices and children. On the day that was called ‘Shrovetide’ boys would take a fighting cock to school, and the morning would be spent in the schoolroom watching the cock’s fight. Thankfully now this cruel practise is illegal. In the afternoons the boys played football. In some areas a Pancake Bell was rung at midday and the children knew they could leave school and go off to enjoy the afternoon with pancake races, skipping games with a long rope with ten to fifteen all skipping to a rhyme such as this.’ Tippety, tippety tin, give me a pancake and I will come in. Tippety, tippety toe, give me a pancake and I will go.’ Another popular rhyme was,’ Pancake Tuesday is a very happy day, If you don’t give us a holiday we will run away’.

There was another tradition on Ash Wednesday, the day after Shrove Tuesday. Children would carry a black budded twig of from an Ash tree in their pocket to school, if they forgot this twig, the other children would tread on their feet. To finish off the traditions; in some villages the last Friday in February was known as kissing Friday, a teacher new to the Dales was amazed to see a boy stop and kiss his partner during their dancing class. She reprimanded the boy only to be told by the girl who had enjoyed the kiss.

“It’s alright Miss you see it’s kissing Friday”. Girls would enjoy being soundly kissed at playtime. This teacher no longer tried to stop the kissing. However, she did comment that each year when kissing Friday came round the school was in turmoil. February although being the shortest month, it was definitely one of the busiest.

Council looks to secure future of new medical centre for Sudbury

Babergh District Council’s cabinet members are to consider whether the council should step in to secure the future of a new state-of-the-art medical centre in Sudbury.

The Council approved the sale of the former lorry park in Station Road back in 2020 as a site for new purpose-built facilities to meet the primary health and care needs of the town’s growing population, with plans for Hardwicke House and Meadow Lane doctors’ surgeries to relocate to the new centre.

As well as resolving the pressing need to replace the practice’s ageing facilities in Sudbury and Great Cornard, the plans would also create 20 new jobs, providing additional capacity for healthcare in the community. It was also hoped that the modern training facilities would attract urgently required GPs, nurses, and clinicians to the region.

Detailed planning consent for the new development was granted last April and funding approved by Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care Board (SNEE ICB). Pending final sign off by NHS England, work was due to start on site this spring, with the new centre becoming operational next year.

However, a final condition of the sale is Hardwicke House Group Practice doctors agreeing to lease the building for a period of 25 years – a commitment that the practice partners feel that they are unable to make without greater flexibility concerning the practice lease arrangements, given the uncertainties within the NHS landscape.

Babergh District Council’s cabinet members will discuss how to keep plans on track as part of their wider vision for Sudbury. One possible option is for the council to meet a request by the NHS to take on the headlease of the health centre and then sub-let it to the Hardwicke House practice, until SNEE ICB is in a position to take on the headlease themselves.

Babergh District Council cabinet member for assets and investments, Cllr David Busby said: “It is obvious that this development would have a significant positive impact for residents. We must now carefully weigh any risk this would present to us as a council against the benefits for the town, and act in the best interests of all.”

A report before cabinet members on Monday details the risk for the council and shows how there would be little to no impact on the council in terms of the day-to-day running of the practice, with all costs relating to maintaining and running the property, outgoings, and administrative costs being covered by the NHS and landlord.

According to the report, the main risk would be if the practice were to move out after 15 or 20 years and the building then remain vacant, however cabinet will also hear reassurances from NHS partners and developers over the unlikelihood of this ever occurring – given the ongoing need for healthcare provision in the town and the ideal location of the centre, close to existing transport links.

SNEE ICB and Hardwicke House Group Practice said in a joint statement: “We are grateful that Babergh District Council is considering working with us to deliver a positive result for our patients and local residents. These proposals are the culmination of several years’ work by Hardwicke House Group Practice in trying to identify and secure alternative suitable accommodation within Sudbury.”
