The Gareth Meredith Memorial Walk was a huge success with over 65 participants and more involved in the Meet and Greet Team at the Hadleigh Practice which was open that day. They raised over £1600 for an Infrared Vein Finder in the newly created Phlebotomy Unit. Alan and Beryl Meredith were delighted with the response, especially as it was a pastime much enjoyed by their late son Gareth. There is a display of photos from the walk in the Waiting Room.

SSuffolk artist, Jenne Foulger is beavering away as I write to make sure she has sufficient artwork to fill the blank Waiting Room walls for two months, September to October. You don’t need to be ill to go in and view her unusual work.

Congratulations are in order and well deserved. Happily, the recent national NHS Survey indicated a high level of patient satisfaction with the Hadleigh Boxford Health Centre. On all counts, according to its users, they did well but Receptionists came in for special recognition scoring 100% approval for their service. To check our performance ratings or those of any other Practice visit the links given below.

Although you may feel making a list of your ailments before your face-to-face appointment is helpful, that is not always the case. Unfortunately, doctors have to limit their patient time to 10 minutes per person. You can better prioritise your health issues and use your appointment time to tackle the most serious. Sadly, many patients focus on a lesser problem and mention something more serious just as they are leaving.

People are still using the patient car park when they are not attending appointments at the Practice. This includes town shoppers and visitors to either pharmacy. Using the many alternative parking areas in the town would free up more spaces for ailing, less fit patients.

Finally, many patients are concerned about the change in the arrangements for a repeat prescriptions. This only applies to Boots’ customers. Previously your repeat prescription has been dealt with, internally, by the pharmacy. This has changed. Patients will now be given their repeat prescription when they pick up medicine. This must be delivered to the Practice post-box for a doctor’s approval. The Practice will then send confirmation to the chemist who will prepare your drugs for collection as usual. All this can also be done online via the Practice website, the NHS app and Email. Using IT precludes the need for you to personally deliver your repeat prescription to the Doctors. You could also use Pharmacy 2U who provide an online delivery service. Please note there is no change for patients using the Practice’s, Boxford’s or Mill Pharmacy.

Art In Practice

Jenne Foulger’s art has taken pebble painting to another level. Not just for the stones’ stunning colours but also for their persona in her pictures. As a keen bird watcher, Jenne has used her knowledge of ornithology when painting her carefully selected pebbles with brightly coloured acrylic Posca Pens. The ‘birds’ are then incorporated into an appropriate line drawing and box framed. The results are unusual, effective and fun. Jenne’s artistic portfolio also includes delicate line drawings of birds and scenes.

Jenne inherited her love of drawing from her father and although she has a degree in Interior and Textile Design, painting and drawing took priority. However, her design skills are called upon to create a spectacular Christmas display for Notcutts, Garden Centre at Woodbridge where she is gainfully employed. Her artistic creations were also part of Suffolk Open Studios and the Hadleigh May Show 2023 where she was artist in residence. Her own studio is in her garden in Bramfield where she lives with her partner and two children.

We are truly fortunate that Jenne has kindly agreed to be the first artist to display her work in the newly created mini gallery in the Waiting Room of the Hadleigh Health Centre. We hope that her work will be enjoyed and appreciated by all who visit the Practice.

Debbie Wilson Therapy – focus on low mood and depression

Every single one of us experiences periods of low mood. However, it is worth remembering that we are all individuals and that for some, low mood can be frequent and can last for a long time. We can then run the risk of acceptance and viewing this as our normal, but just because it has been our normal, does not mean it is okay and that you must accept it. Change is possible. I believe that a good starting point in therapy is to provide some psychoeducation to clients. This way of working assists clients in understanding what they are experiencing which raises awareness of future triggers to support their emotional wellbeing beyond therapy.

There are tools that can be learnt that we can all use, including those with a diagnosis of depression or anxiety, as we experience life’s challenges whether big or small. In the ideal world, the time to begin developing these tools is during our childhood and then continue to build on them as we age, but it is never too late. The more we practice, the more we can support our emotional well-being and we can then ride the waves building stronger resilience along the way.

Quite often our low mood is the result of unhelpful thinking patterns and the connection between our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviours which can be overwhelming leading to distress. Science, particularly over the last few decades, has confirmed that we all can influence our emotions. Neuroplasticity has evidence that we can change our thought patterns and behaviours. Therapy is not a medicine; it does not provide a quick fix. Instead, it works like a mirror, enabling me to reflect back to clients what I am noticing during our work together, raising my clients' awareness of what has been holding them back.

So, if you are experiencing emotional difficulties, our sessions will provide you with a confidential, safe, caring, and non-judgemental space for you to reflect, explore and plan a positive way forward.

Give yourself the best chance of a successful completion on your home purchase or sale by working in partnership with Holmes & Hills Solicitors. Benefit from our successful completion rate that is 22% higher than the national average reported by Rightmove1

What number of property transactions fall-through? Rightmove report that, on average across the country, approximately 30% of property transactions fall-through2. It is a much higher percentage than most buyers and sellers expect it to be.

Reduce the risk of your transaction falling-through Those using Holmes & Hills Solicitors' conveyancing services benefit from a 22% higher successful completion rate compared to the national average. This means your transaction has an increased chance of successfully completing when Holmes & Hills is advising and representing you in your property transaction.

Why do property transactions fall-through? Your transaction might fallthrough for a number of reasons, including your buyer finding another property; a surveyor identifying issues with the property; or a buyer’s solicitor identifying issues surrounding matters such as rights of way, covenants, lease terms, easements, overage, options or boundary issues.

Why is Holmes & Hills’ successful completion rate 22% higher? Holmes & Hills has a large team of 22 property lawyers dealing with second-hand, new-build and shared ownership property across the country. The size of the team means there is unlikely to be an issue the team hasn’t seen and resolved before. Proactively identifying and resolving problems means we can keep your transaction on course, reducing the risk of your property transaction falling through and securing you a successful completion.

Benefit from fixed fee packages

As well as an increased chance of your transaction successfully completing, Holmes & Hills provides fixed-fee residential conveyancing quotes with no hidden charges. When you obtain conveyancing quotations from other law firms you may find charges for completing Stamp Duty Land Tax forms, dealing with lenders and leasehold fees. With Holmes & Hills, these items are included within our legal fee. We give you a simple, transparent, fixed-fee quotation.

Partner with Holmes & Hills to secure your transaction By working in partnership with our clients, local estate agents, mortgage brokers, and financial advisors, Holmes & Hills' residential property lawyers will ensure a smooth transaction, whilst protecting your legal interests.

Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club

I recently featured the Club members enjoying their tea break in the sun. This month I would like to start to introduce you to some of the members that ‘go the extra mile’ to make the Carpet Bowls Club sessions run successfully.

Firstly, I would like to introduce our Peg Man, Ivan. No he does not do the Club washing, he sorts out the teams and which mat they will be playing on. We use coloured cloth pegs in a bag to decide who is playing with who, and there is a list of what colours are playing on which carpet. But Ivan does so much more, he has taken over the opening and closing of the hall before and after each session, checking lights are off, doors are closed properly and no one is left in the building before locking up. There has been some close calls when someone has decided to go to the toilet just before leaving the Village Hall, but Ivan vigilance has paid off. Ivan has also brought new members to the Club. Ivan can also be found setting out the Curling on a Friday afternoon at the Village Hall. This activity is run courtesy of Lavenham Library and new participants are always welcome there too.

If you would like to join us and meet the Peg Man, join us at 2pm on Wednesdays and 7pm on Thursday. First two sessions are free to try out Carpet Bowls.

Look forward to seeing you there, Marilyn Beatham – Club Secretary

Lavenham Sinfonia

Registered charity No. 109175

The final concert of the 2023 season is on Sunday September 17th September at 19:00hrs at Lavenham Church. Anita Datta will conduct this exciting selection of well-known works. Anita is a Conductor and organist, a very versatile musician known for her work with Choirs and voices. She is founder of the Swan Consort, a chamber choir of elite singers specialising in early music. She is currently based in Durham completing her Doctorate. She was selected for the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Women conductors programme in 2018 and has studied under Jessica Cottis.

The evening opens with Johannes Brahms concert overture the “Tragic” written in 1880 and first performed in December of that year in Vienna. He chose the title “Tragic” to emphasise the turbulent, tormented character of the piece which is, in essence, a free- standing symphonic movement and does not follow any specific dramatic programme.

It is followed by Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No.2 with soloist Mathilde Milwidsky. Born in 1994 Mathilde graduated from the Royal Academy of Music in 2017 having studied under Gyorgy Pauk. She now regularly plays all over Europe whilst studying at the Hochschule fur Musick in Munich. The Concerto was composed in 1935 and premiered later that year in Madrid and remains one of Prokofiev’s most popular works.

a more environmentally-friendly burial is becoming more popular which is why Hadleigh Town Council are pleased to be able to offer this alternative.

As well as the Natural Burial Meadow, there is also a separate Rose Garden for scattering of ashes, which has been described as “a lovely place to visit in the future”. There is also a Tree of Life upon which in addition to traditional cremation and full burial plots, loved ones in the natural burial area or ashes scatterings can be commemorated with memorial leaves placed on the “Tree of Life”. Scattering of ashes can be booked in for our new rose garden close to the Tree of Life and natural burial area.

The concert concludes with Brahms Symphony No.2 composed in the summer of 1877 and premiered later the same year by the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Hans Richter. The cheery and almost pastoral mood of the work often invites a comparison with Beethoven’s 6th. There are four movements Allegro, Adagio, Allegretto and an Allegro con Spirito. Phyllis Urch was one of the earliest supporters of the Sinfonia after it was founded in 1979 and remained a dedicated patron throughout her life. The orchestra will play a memorial concert in her memory on November 5th at 15:00 in Lavenham Village Hall. In order to distinguish this concert from the Sinfonia’s normal canon of performances it has been decided to use a smaller “sinfonietta” drawn from the full orchestra performing a number of smaller scale works in the more intimate atmosphere of the Village Hall. The programme opens with Ibert’s Concertino di camera, followed by Stravinsky’s enchanting Dumbarton Oaks and two Octets, a shorter one by Jean Francaix (1912 – 1997) and the ever popular one by Mendelssohn. The conductor will be John Chillingworth.

Please do reserve these dates for the concerts which I am sure will be a great finale to the Sinfonia’s 2023 season.

Tickets are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/lavenham-sinfonia. Do come and join us at Lavenham Church and at the Village Hall!

The addition to the long-standing cemetery at Hadleigh Town Council’s Friars Road location, which includes a Natural Burial Meadow for burials and cremations, is very much “up and running”. Concern about the environment, as well as other factors such as a love of nature and the outdoors, are leading more people to consider a natural burial. Natural burials are far from a new idea as returning a body directly to the earth has been done since time immemorial and the choice to have

Veterinary Physiotherapy –How can it benefit our pets?

Veterinary physiotherapy is a science-based profession, which is used alongside veterinary care to aid in the treatment, or management of musculoskeletal and neurological injuries and diseases. However, veterinary physiotherapy is also now commonly used as a preventive and for general maintenance to improve our pet’s quality of life. Horses and dogs are more frequently treated; however, it is available for any animal species that may require treatment.

Veterinary physiotherapy adopts a holistic approach through the provision of a comprehensive assessment and treatment, including massage, stretching, electrotherapies, remedial exercise, mobilisations, and rehabilitation plans. The primary benefit and aim of veterinary physiotherapy is to reduce pain. The reduction of pain in our pets can ultimately lead to an improvement in mobility, behavioural concerns, and long-term quality of life, helping both of you to get back to enjoying time together and making memories! Veterinary physiotherapy can also help to improve strength, stamina, and flexibility, ultimately enhancing performance.

Ultimately horses and dogs of any age, working at any level can benefit from physiotherapy, and at ARC Veterinary Physiotherapy we provide an empathetic, caring, and individualised approach to the animal in front of us. Our animals give us so much joy in life, we understand how special they are, and how much they deserve to always feel at their best!

If you think that your horse or dog may benefit from a physiotherapy session, please get in touch on 07527 310689 or email info@arcvetphysio.co.uk

Beekeeping Notes

Wasps and hornets make their nests out of dead wood chewed up and formed into thin paper like sheets of grey tissue. Bumble bees and others make their nests in holes in the ground, but honey bees are unique in that they use beeswax as their standard building material. Beeswax is made from honey and extruded as tiny soft transparent wafers from eight glands on the underside of the bees’ abdomen. Approximately six grams of honey are required to produce one gram of wax. While still soft the bees form the wax into six sided tubes with a base. Another tube, or cell, is formed on the other side using the same base, and the structure is attached to the walls of the nest cavity or in a beehive, to the edge of the frame. As soon as one cell is partially formed the bees start building additional cells, each one attached to the wall of its neighbour. Eventually the cells reach the side of the nest cavity, and the bees start work on building a replicate sheet alongside. The space between each sheet is critical and just wide enough for two bees to work back to back. The cell walls are a standard thickness, and so thin that when filled with the food stores of the colony one kilo of beeswax is sufficient to contain ten times the weight of honey. Quite how the bees are able to build perfectly formed comb in the dark, without measuring equipment, plumb line or spirit level is a mystery still to be resolved.

There is plenty of evidence that beeswax was used in most forms of domestic activity from early times. Fishing spear points bound with hide strips and glued with beeswax date from the late Stone Age in 11,000 b.c. Damaged human teeth restored with beeswax found in Slovenia date from the Neolithic period 6,500 years ago.

In Roman times wooden tablets with a beeswax insert were widely used for writing, but the earliest example was recovered from the wreck of a ship that sunk off the coast of Turkey around 3,500 years ago. A similar ivory tablet made in Iraq in 700 b.c. still carries traces of beeswax with a cuneiform inscription.

Beeswax has been replaced by modern technology in many traditional applications such as lighting, food storage and (happily) dentistry. However, beeswax still plays a valuable part in our lives. It is used in hip replacement and thoracic surgery, cosmetics and jewellery manufacture, and nothing evokes the spirit of Christmas more than the soft steady glow of beeswax candles. And all thanks to the honeybees.

Citizens Advice Column

My children are starting new schools in September, one is in primary school and the other secondary. Between uniforms, PE kit and knowing they’ll need to catch the bus each day the costs are adding up. I’m already pretty stretched, so I’m not sure how to cover these extra outgoings. Is there any help I can get?

A new school year can put pressure on lots of people’s budgets, so you’re not alone in your worries. But there is help available.

A good place to start is the Citizens Advice website where you’ll find lots of information on the support you might be entitled to for school-related costs. The help you can get to cover school lunches will vary depending on how old your children are and if you claim benefits. Children in Reception, Year 1 and 2 automatically get free school meals. You can apply for free school meals for older children if you claim certain types of benefits, including Universal Credit, Child Tax Credit and Income Support. The full list is available on the Citizens Advice website, www.citizensadvice.org.uk

You mentioned concerns about travel costs. If your child can't walk to school because of special educational needs or disabilities, they should get free school transport. You may be able to get help with transport costs from your Local Education Authority if your children can’t walk because it's dangerous or too far. Your Local Education Authority is part of your local council that deals with education in your area, you can find yours on GOV.UK. Contact it directly to find out exactly what support it offers.

If you’re on a low income, your Local Education Authority may also be able to help you with activity and school uniform costs. You’re likely to be considered to be on a low income if you get means-tested benefits like Universal Credit or Housing Benefit. In some places there are also local charitable schemes that can help. A good place to find out about these is the school itself or Parent Teacher Association (PTA) both will usually know if these kinds of schemes exist. A lot of people are feeling the squeeze at the moment, but it’s important to remember that help is available with starting school costs and you’re not alone.

For information and advice on this or anything else, visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and District Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact. We are providing advice by telephone and email Monday – Thursday, 10am – 3pm.

Inflation

With such high inflation levels at the moment, many clients are asking me how to stop its eroding effects on their savings. As we all see the price of goods and services going up day by day, and the savings rates on offer at many banks still a great deal less than that of the inflation rates, it is a reasonable question to ask.

Constructing a well-balanced portfolio can be one way to try and beat inflation and target some real term growth over the medium to long term. We can help structure a plan that will aim to produce a return at a level that you are comfortable with.

The value of your investments with SJP will be directly linked to the performance of the funds you select, and the value can therefore go down as well as up. You may get back less than you invested.

Equities do not provide the security of capital which is characteristic of a deposit with a bank or building society.

ESTABLISHED IN 1982

Our key values are Integrity, Friendship, Respect & Charity. With so much uncertainty in our world today these guiding principles ring as true now as they have at any point in the organisation’s history. It is one of the oldest social and charitable organisations in the world. With 69 Lodges and well over 2500 members in Suffolk there is the opportunity to meet many like-minded individuals. Suffolk and our local area in particular has a close-knit community of Freemasons who are very enthusiastic about what we do. However, it has never been exclusive to any rank or race. Those that have embraced the Craft from Lords, farmers, innkeepers, clergy, councillors, solicitors, and indeed all trades and professions have practised their Freemasonry here in Sudbury and other local masonic centres in nearby Clare and Boxford and throughout our rural community. Nationally there are 8,000 Lodges with over 170,000 freemasons.

Above all Freemasonry is to be enjoyed, whilst supporting Charity but also making good men even better.

Freemasonry itself fulfils many purposes, for example we are, after the National Lottery, by far the biggest charity organisation in Britain, supporting (with little publicity) virtually every worthwhile campaign in our society and as a body donating annually £millions to worthwhile causes. Local charities also benefit with £thousands also quietly donated. Many embrace our ritual, fulfilling their theatrical ambitions. Some love, embrace and study our immense history and the difference masons have made to our society. But above all, the one common thread is the desire of the company and comradeship of those of a like mind.

Interested to find out more?

Sudbury & District Freemasons are holding an open evening on Friday October 12th at 6pm where there will be the opportunity to discover more about the history of our organisation, our Historic Masonic Hall and observe our beautiful old temple, built in 1886 and virtually unchanged since. And of course, the people that have been involved over the years, listen to an account of our pastime and most importantly to just dine and socialise with us.

If you would like to join us on the evening and discover more about freemasonry please contact Andy via email: grp5rep@suffolkfreemason.org.uk

Ukraine Aid Continues

I have recently returned from my ninth trip in to Ukraine, part funded by Kesgrave and Little Bealings churches, driving a Ukrainian woman, her daughter, their cat and belongings home from Ipswich to Dnipro, in the family car, following the passing of the father on Christmas day ‘22. They want and need to be with family at this difficult time, despite the risks, all too evident in the missile attack on Dnipro on 28th July, 2 large explosions made us jump and run to the bathroom, where the 9 year old daughter stood crying between her mother and uncle. I now know the target was a large residential block with children amongst the casualties, as reported in world press. This adds to my determination to work with many others, doing what we can to ease suffering and support Ukrainians at this time.

I published my “GoFundMe” fundraising details in the July edition. The mission described is still intended although possibly with a little modification. One car just purchased will be converted to front line “off road” casualty recovery vehicle, the other, a pick up kindly donated by an individual, Peter Elliston, is currently having welding repairs and will be used also to recover wounded soldiers and to help mobility against a far larger army. I have received such generous donations to date from local people and those further afield both British and Ukrainian, only about half are reflected in the GoFundMe, such that I have been able to buy one good car and have money to pay for repairs to the gifted car, and hopefully then sufficient to purchase a second hand trailer. Money continues to be needed of course, to cover current intentions, delivery costs and ongoing aid trips. So, if you would like to support, please see the QR code and/or contact me direct to discuss etc.

The Kyiv military hospital, I have delivered to several times, have asked if I might be able to source a 10-12 KW single phase diesel generator, in anticipation of another winter where power supply infrastructure is targeted. Such generators new cost between 5-7K so I am hoping there may be a second hand one available or the incredible generosity of people is able to rise to this challenge also. If I acquire such a large generator I would take it on the car trailer, and deliver the second car on a further trip.

Between these trips, there is much work around fund raising, sourcing/collecting supplies etc, and Mediquip Ipswich provided me with a third large load of valuable medical aids I was able again to take to the Ukrainian warehouse in London for onward delivery to hospitals and centres in Ukraine who forward photos of delivery and use. My huge thanks again to John Grose Ipswich for yet another free loan of a Luton for this purpose!

I have more good supplies than I will be able to fit in two vehicles ( includes 4 generators, medical supplies, water pumps, etc) so any further supplies received would be held for further trips or taken to other Ukrainian onward delivery centres.

There is not space to express my heartfelt individual thanks to so many people again, for all your gifts and words of encouragement too, that makes these trips and the support possible. I would emphasise again how much Ukrainians express that such initiatives, individual, small and larger, are such a vital encouragement to them and, together, add huge value to the international government aid delivered, and provide for very real needs, often with the precision and speed that is more difficult to achieve through large organisations. THANK YOU!!

Free business support on offer for Babergh

and Mid Suffolk start-ups

Babergh and Mid Suffolk Councils have teamed up with MENTA to offer startup businesses free expert support and guidance. As part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the councils were allocated £90,000 to deliver the scheme and have partnered with MENTA to roll it out across the districts.

The programme is open to those in Babergh or Mid Suffolk that are thinking of starting a business, are in the process of starting a business or have recently started their business venture. The programme, which is free to enrol on and set to be open until the end of March 2025, will include a range of workshops, 1 to 1 sessions, seminars and much more all designed to help new businesses flourish.

Councillor Derek Davis, cabinet member for economic development at Babergh District Council, said: “Businesses small and large play such an important role in our district and that’s why it is vital to offer to support to those just starting out or looking to set up within the district. This is an excellent opportunity to gain invaluable support and guidance and I would encourage anyone who is eligible to enrol.”

Councillor Teresa Davis, cabinet member for thriving towns and rural communities at Mid Suffolk District Council, said: “There are lots of things to think about when starting a new business and I am really pleased that, by partnering with MENTA, we are able to provide the very best level of support to all of those budding entrepreneurs in the district. Whether you’re thinking of starting a business or have been running for a few months, this programme is the perfect chance to access bespoke support and advice which can help your business to thrive.”

We recognise that small and micro-business are the lifeblood of the Babergh & Mid-Suffolk economy and require nurturing and support to survive and be successful. Starting a business or going self-employed is a big step and access to high quality non-biased advice and guidance is vital to help individuals & businesses ‘start well’.

Glenn’s Virtual Missions

Land’s End to John O’Groats - It all started when I read an article in December 2020 about a walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats, effectively 1000 miles. It was promoting the great outdoors after the pandemic so I decided to do it, starting on the 1st January 2021. Virtual Mission is a website where one records each day’s walk and it is shown on a map. The route went via Devon, Dorset, Birmingham, the Peak District, West Yorkshire, Northumberland, Edinburgh, the Cairngorms, Inverness and on the 29th March, 2021 after 1,006 miles I arrived in John O’Groats. I download screenshots every week so have a record of the length of each day’s walk. Hamburg to Munich - When I was a volunteer medical courier for Anthony Nolan, I regularly flew to cities and towns in Germany to collect bone marrow or stem cells for leukaemia patients in the UK. I therefore decided to do a virtual walk from Hamburg in the north to Munich in the south. This was a solo mission, and I devised a route which would take me to some of the places I had visited – south to Hanover, east to Berlin, south to Dresden, west to Leipzig, south west to Frankfurt, then to Mannheim, Stuttgart, Nuremburg and Munich. I started on the 1st April 2021 and finished on the 28th June, a total of 994 miles.

Ness Point to St David’s - Having walked south to north, I then walked east to west, beginning in Lowestoft on the 1st July and reached St David’s, Pembrokeshire on the 2nd August, via Worcester, the Wye Valley, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath and Carmarthen. During this walk I accompanied JW on his birthday walks, which over 4 days boosted my mileage by 58. The total mileage was 385.

Coast to Coast - A popular walk – starting from St Bees on 3rd August and after 156 miles reaching Robin Hood’s Bay on the 16th.

Royal National Institute for the Deaf - I had a few days without recording any walks, until the 1st September when I rose to the challenge of a sponsored walk of a minimum of 125 miles for the RNID. I was very grateful to those who did sponsor me, and in fact by the 30th September I had walked 322 miles. There was no set route so it was accomplished with a few longish walks to Kersey Mill, Upper/Lower Layham, Aldham Church.

Mayford to Marton - A virtual walk from Mayford, Surrey, where my brother and sister-in-law live, to Marton, East Yorkshire where their younger daughter lives with her husband and son. I started on the 1st October, and by 23rd October had walked 232 miles.

Hadleigh to Hastings - I am not sure why I chose that walk as it was only 120 miles, having started on the 24th October I arrived in Hastings on the 4th November 2021. Having walked 3,200 miles in 2021 on these 7 virtual missions, the ultimate challenge beckoned.

Cape Town to Magadan - A friend sent me an article about the longest walk in the world from Cape Town to Magadan, east Russia, which can be accomplished, if one literally walked, without using planes or boats, only bridges. Literally, too, it would be over 13,000 miles, passing through 17 countries. My Virtual Mission, however, showed it as 8,590 miles as it plotted in a straight line. I started from Cape Town on the 5th November 2021, then Virtually walked through Botswana, Angola, Zambia (A-Z), and the Democratic Republic of Congo. At some point in the DRC came the St Edmund’s Way walk – 80+ miles from Manningtree to Brandon - JW, AF, DR and I undertook this walk between the 2nd and 6th May 2022. The first day was 19.5 miles from Manningtree station to Bures. Then we walked 16.4 miles from Bures to Lavenham, Bury to Thetford was 19.8 miles and the final day was a stroll in the park as it was only 8.5 miles to Brandon station. Other walkers joined us on odd days, and we were very grateful to the drivers who collected us from one place and delivered us back there the following morning. Back Virtually to Africa – I went from South Sudan to Sudan, Egypt, Israel, Syria, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and finally Russia, and Magadan, where I arrived on 6 August, 21 months - 636 days - after setting off from Cape Town. Total mileage was 8,590.

Meet the PAWS-itivity pack at your local library!

Suffolk Libraries has been spreading a bit of PAWS-itivity over the summer with a pack of ‘Library Labradors’ now on display in the county’s libraries. Over 40 colourful dog sculptures and related artworks are now in libraries as part of Suffolk Libraries biggest fundraising campaign – PAWSitivity.

Suffolk Libraries is the charity which runs Suffolk’s library service. PAWS-itivity is designed to spread some positivity, colour and fun across Suffolk, whilst helping to raise money to support the vital work of the organisation in the community.

The dogs all feature designs individually created by local artists and take their inspiration from various sources such as Ed Sheeran, The Beatles, David Bowie, Kate Bush and well-known authors. The entire collection of 48 sculptures or other dog-related artwork was first unveiled at the Suffolk Show where the Ed Sheeran inspired ‘Castle on the Dog’ by Lois Cordelia was voted by visitors as their favourite.

Huge colourful images of the dogs were projected onto the walls of Framlingham Castle recently by Motion Mapping and they have all now taken up residence in libraries for the summer. A list and a map of where each dog or artwork can be found is available on the Suffolk Libraries PAWS-itivity web pages along with more information about the campaign. The dogs will be in libraries until 3 September. Suffolk Libraries is asking anyone keen on buying one for themselves to save the date of 12 October when the big fundraising auction takes place at Trinity Park.

Bruce Leeke, Chief Executive of Suffolk Libraries, said: “We’re thrilled to see the PAWS-itivity dogs arrive in our libraries. They’re vibrancy is the result of lots of hard work from our amazing artists and the generous support of our sponsors. The summer is a very busy time in libraries with the Summer Reading Challenge, Blank Page programme and many other free or low-cost activities on offer. We know our PAWS-itivity dogs will provide an added attraction for people over the summer and I’d encourage you to drop into your local library to check out your library lab!”

Suffolk Libraries is also hosting a raffle for the chance to win one of several prizes, including Charmain McKissock’s fabric ‘Book & Woof’ dog, which is inspired by Charmain’s project where children can read to therapy dogs. Other prizes include annual passes to Jimmy’s Farm for two adults and two children, as well as signed copies of ‘Magpie Murders’ by Anthony Horowitz, ‘The Frog’s Kiss’ by James Mayhew, ‘Read! Said Rabbit’ by Marjoke Henrichs and ‘Gaspard’s Foxtrot’ by Zeb Soanes and James Mayhew.

A new souvenir guide to all the dogs will also soon be available to accompany the campaign. Latest News from Chamberlin Hall

Chamberlin Hall is a local community hall situated just off the main high street in Bildeston. The Hall is a large venue and offers lots of facilities and services open to the public and available to hire for business or pleasure.

It’s that time of year when we have to get our accounts in order and prepare for our annual general meeting. Whilst the admin around this isn’t that much fun it gives us a chance to stop and think about what we’ve achieved and what we want to do for the year ahead (assuming our community keeps us on the committee that is!).

Looking back, we’ve done some amazing things. We’ve raised c.£50,000 in grants and sponsorship which has been invested into energy saving measures (including solar), new facilities (new tech, projection equipment, catering equipment amongst other things) that has improved the quality of the services and facilities we can provide to local people and businesses. Our facilities have been used for 100’s of local events, clubs and classes and we’ve hosted some great events – our annual panto, beer festival, regular family discos, live band nights and social events.

Looking ahead – we want to do more of the same – keep putting on activities that support our local communities and businesses, make more improvements to our facilities and host some more cracking events – coming up we have (over 18s) Karaoke & Disco (9th Sept), live music from Jax & Co (7th Oct), our Winter Beer Festival (24th & 25th Nov) and then we enter the Christmas party season – we’ll be hosting our annual over 60’s Christmas Lunch on 9th December and our Chamberlin Hall Christmas Part on 22nd – and these are just the highlights, lots more going on in between!

And we couldn’t do any of this without our fantastic team of volunteers – our committee members who are involved in everything we do and our volunteers who come to help us when we need extra pairs of hands. If you don’t already, we’d totally recommend getting involved in your local community groups – it’s really rewarding and every bit of help counts. And of course, with the current increase in costs we really are in a position of Use it or Lose it – and we wouldn’t be here without the local people and business who use and support our Hall and events – so we’re very thankful for all the support we get from them – we hope it will continue through the year ahead as we have some great plans!

If you fancy finding out more or joining in with any of our events, please come and see us or check out our website where you can always find out what is going on.

Ken’s SESAW News

Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

“Oh no, it’s that time of the year again” Mum groaned as she cleared another swarm of flying ants off the table. Presumably these annoying insects have their place in Nature, preferably not in the kitchen!

All living creatures are welcome at SESAW, whatever their traits. We see a variety of personalities, particularly in dogs, from quiet couch potatoes to adventurous daredevils. Most settle in new loving homes, occasionally one bounces back and becomes a permanent resident.

Such was Bobby, a delightful, mischievous terrier, completely unfazed by deafness. Unfortunately, he hated being alone and came back to us after causing much damage in the short time his new owner was out. He was an exceptional character and seemed to be Houdini in canine form. If someone exclaimed “How did he get out?” you knew Bobby was up to his old tricks again. The fences were all made higher after a bemused householder in the next village phoned about a strange dog waiting for dinner in her kitchen!

At the age of seventeen years, Bobby has made his last great escape and our lives are the poorer for it. Meanwhile we have Nico, a big, boisterous lad waiting for an experienced home with no small children. He is strong and bouncy, loves attention, long walks and swimming in lakes. He will make a fantastic dog with patience, kindness and on-going training. Please leave a message or send an email if he is the dog for you. I’m off to find Mum who needs some extra love and attention from a little dog like me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. ‘Shedders’

Help To Build

The Great Wall Of China

For Rosie Slais (photo right) returning to her pre-Covid social activities was important. After months of managing with Facetime or telephone calls the prospect of getting back to her face-to-face weekly Mahjong sessions was even more inviting. In the meantime, her family had bought her a beautiful set, so she was ready to go - well not quite. This mysterious far eastern game involves building the Great Wall of China. The four-sided Wall needs solid stands to support the tiles during its construction. Unfortunately, Rosie’s stands were not quite up to the job. The recently formed, Hadleigh Men’s Shed group accepted the challenge to create some tailor-made stands. Following careful line drawings and precise measurement the team made four solid but not heavy, attractive wooden stands. Not being an everyday assignment for the ‘shedders,’ it was a learning curve for everyone involved. Rosie was happy to pay for the materials used. She and her three co-players are delighted with the most professional results and glad to return to their sociable weekly Mahjong session.

Hadleigh Evening WI

In July we had a successful garden party in Bridge Street Old School. We are indeed fortunate to have this venue in Hadleigh, Ian and Matthew are so welcoming and helpful. Our Federation President and visitors from four other WIs commented on the standard of the setting both inside the hall and garden. The Nayland Handbells entertained us, one of the tunes they had prepared was 'In an English Country Garden'! In August Lyn Davis regaled us with entertaining stories about life as an opera singer and chorister with the English National Orchestra. After she told us about how the sound effect from a beheading was achieved, we will never view a cabbage in quite the same light. This month Ken Stone's talk is entitled 'The House of Windsor' which he updates each year, so he will have a lot of interesting material for us. The Lunch Bunch had a great culinary experience at the Ski Slope restaurant, two having their birthday on the day - one her 93rd! This month we will be revisitng The Brook at Copdock, so know a good lunch awaits. The Bookworms book of the month is Peter May's The Night Gate, in August Miss Benson's Beetle was a good read. In October we will be looking at revisitng a classic from our younger days! The Amblers, as ever, enjoyed their ramble, this time starting out from Kersey Mill, albeit ending up with a heavy downpour in the last few minutes, while the less venturous stayed behind and had a wander around the shops before meeting up together for coffee and cake. We meet at 7.30pm in the seminar room of the Library on the third Tuesday of each month. You are very welcome to come for a 'taster' eveing. Contact Glenn Abbassi the Secretary on 07870 312409 and we will look out for you.

Burstall Flower Show, Fete and Fun Dog Show 2023

As storm Antoni was heading towards East Anglia preparations were at their height for the 68th Annual Burstall show. The deluge hit the village as the show opened and continued throughout the afternoon. However, everybody took it in good spirit and visitors arrived in amazing numbers. As ever, the marquee was filled with an impressive array of flowers, produce, baking and craft but was also packed with people sheltering from the persistent downpours. The village hall refreshments and barbecue did big business and the beer tent was crammed to capacity. West Wind, part of the Hospital Band, played on from under their dripping gazebo.

In memory of Tony Burchnall, a stalwart of the village, particularly the show and well known in rallying circles, there was a display of classic vehicles. Lots of cars arrived in spite of the conditions and the new trophy to honour Tony was won by a beautiful 1937 Bentley Denby owned by Mr Tucker from Tunstall. Believe it or not the Fun Dog show went ahead in the open air ring. Sixteen dogs were put through their paces while onlookers sheltered where they could – a huge thank you to Ken and Mel Seager for their perseverance.

Sadly, it was the sideshows and visiting stall holders that had a really wet and dismal afternoon. One of the older village residents reckoned that it was the wettest show since 1966 so I suppose we cannot complain but just hope for sunshine next year!

A huge thank you to all those involved in what must turn out to be a legendry show. Particularly to the set up team who adapted the show layout as the forecast worsened and to the fantastic visitors who turned out and supported us on such an horrendous afternoon.

Cycle Sportive, Summer Race

League & Tour Of Britain

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s 7th Gayford Flyer sportive will take place on Sunday, 10th September. It costs £15 to enter and this includes refreshments and music at The George. This year’s Flyer will have two signed routes of around 60 and 30 miles on mostly quiet roads close to Hadleigh, with some great views and the odd hill. Details on how to enter can be found www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk. There will be no entries on the day. The event is open to young cyclists provided they are accompanied by an adult. This year’s Gayford Flyer will take place in the week that over 100 of the world’s best cyclists race through Hadleigh in the Tour of Britain. Stage 5 (Thursday, 7th) will begin and end in Felixstowe. Spectators will see riders race down Benton Street onto the High Street, where there will be a sprint, between 12.15 – 12.45pm.

Our coaching team has worked with a group of Juniors to develop their cyclocross skills throughout the summer. Led by Benson and Roger, Rickaby, Lucy and Mike have helped riders, 5 years and upwards, to deal with cornering, hairpins, hurdles, limbo-poles and sprints. One week was particularly challenging with children and their parents coping with torrential summer rain. Riders have earned points from every activity and will receive medals for taking part in the Summer 2023 Race League. It is satisfying to note that some HCC youngsters have taken part in local and regional events. On Sundays: our Club Ride departs at 9.00 from The George Inn, High Street, Hadleigh. This ride is normally about 30 to 40 miles at a speed of approximately 15 mph, depending on the preferences of the ride leader and the capabilities of the group. Our rides are 'no-drop'. That means you won't be left behind (unless you choose to be), but the group may split into smaller groups of different speeds if that makes it easier to handle. Keep an eye out for the details from the ride leader nearer the time.

The rides and activities are weather dependent so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling Instagram hadleighcc or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

Hadleigh Cricket Club

Can you believe that we are almost at the end of the 2023 season? By the time you read this, there’ll be just two weekends of cricket left at Friar’s Road! And what a season it’s been! The start of the season saw the opening of our new decking area, although it’s first use was somewhat delayed by persistent rain which saw several matches washed out. The first two weeks of our junior training met a similar fate, before finally the weather gods got the memo! In June, we received the sad news that our president, Gary Girling had passed away. Its safe to say that he is very much missed, and it was an honour to host his family and friends for a celebration of his life following his funeral. Our annual President’s Day on 27th August was played as a memorial match; and the committee are working on a more permanent memorial to Gary - watch this space.

As it stands, our all but one of our senior sides are pushing for top 3 finishes in their respective leagues, and we’ll share the final positions next month. We have seen some great individual performances this season, including 150 Not Out from Justin Toombs on 29th July, centuries from Jamie Colcomb (his maiden 1st team 100!), Lovejeet Singh (including 2 x 100’s in one weekend!), Oliver Clark, Kudzai Maunze, Taylor Locke and Toby Toombs; 5-wicket hauls from Archie Magnus, Oliver Clark, Matthew Clark and Kyle Tanner, including a hat-trick on 12th August! Our ladies’ team has struggled with availability this season, as many of our younger players have been concentrating on GCSE’s, A-levels and university, but this has improved over the last few weeks. Over the winter months we will be recruiting to regenerate the squad and to avoid a similar scenario next season, so if you are interested in trying a new sport, please do get in touch!

Off the field we will continue to hold our popular social events throughout the off-season, and the community is welcome to join us at any of our upcoming dates…

30 September – Quiz Night

14 October – End of Season Celebration

28 October – Trunk or Treat Hallowe’en Party

18 November – Festive Fair

2 December – HCC Christmas Party (formerly Cheese and Wine!)

We’ll also look to open the bar to show live sport on the big screen each weekend.

With the cricket season over, this now frees up the pavilion for private hirings, so if you’re looking to host an event or party, get in touch with our hirings secretary, Donna, by email (hcchirings@gmail.com).

Hadleigh and District Garden Club

Our August talk was by Roger Hance FRPS on “Wild Flowers and Orchids”. He showed many slides of wild flowers and orchids which he had taken and some included the insects that pollinate and feed from them. The talk was enjoyed by all and Roger will be back next year to talk on “The Secret Life of a Wood”. Roger was busy after the talk answering questions from members. The competition of “A single rose” was won by Maggie Miller and there were many other entries too. The competition is open to members and nonmembers. Members brought in plants to sell to raise club funds and all the bargain plants sold. Members enjoyed the usual raffle and light refreshments afterwards.

On 5th September the club will be visiting Hadleigh Flowers at Benton End Farm and our next meeting will be on 11th September with a talk by Lucy Skellorn – “My Iris Collection”, in the Guild Room opposite St. Mary's Church at 7.30. The competition will be 5 runner beans on a plate and there will be plants for sale and a raffle and light refreshments. Members £2, Non-members £4.
