Shelley Centre to receive £25,000 from Suffolk Freemasons

The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding is to receive a £25,000 Community Award from the Freemasons following an unprecedented public vote. The charity was one of 6 to be nominated by Freemasons in Suffolk, with local people voting to decide the level of their Award. They were part of 178,801 people who voted across England and Wales. The Community Awards are a major part of Freemasonry’s 300th anniversary celebrations. The Masonic Charitable Foundation is distributing three million pounds to 300 charities across the country, with the public vote deciding on the range of Awards from £4,000 to £25,000. Jan Derbyshire, Chairman of The Shelley Centre said: “The grant of £25,000 which we have been awarded following the public vote is hugely important and we would like to express our heartfelt and grateful thanks to everybody who took the trouble to vote for us. This is an amazing amount of money which will make such a difference to our Charity and enable The Centre to get several much-needed maintenance projects underway so that we can continue to benefit the health of wellbeing of adults and children with disabilities through riding therapies. We are also very grateful to the Masonic Charitable Foundation for this opportunity and their generosity.” The Masonic Charitable Foundation obtains all of its funding from Freemasons, their families and friends. It is estimated that half of Freemasonry’s total charitable expenditure of over £33m goes to charities that help people in communities across the country. Neville Warnes, Provincial Grand Charity Steward in the Province of Suffolk said: “We are delighted so many people voted in Suffolk. The Shelley Centre was one of 6 charities nominated by local Freemasons and I know they will use their £25,000 grant to continue with their outstanding work.” www.suffolkfreemason.org.uk

Swim England curriculum swimming and water safety statistics conducted in 2016 show that 31 per cent of Year 6 pupils leave primary school without the minimum swimming ability and water safety skills. This is not the case for the thirteen primary schools taught by Lisa who teaches on behalf of South Suffolk Leisure at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Suffolk Norse’s statistics for these primary schools report that above 87% of children by the end of year 6 (11years) can swim 25m unaided and 78% can pass their personal survival test. Suffolk as a county achieved 74% for 25metres and 58% for personal survival. Claire Turnbull, South Suffolk Leisure Business Development Manager says ‘We are so proud of what Lisa has achieved with her students. Hadleigh Swimming Pool is now 46 years old and despite being in need of replacement, does what it says on the tin.’ To find out more about how your child can learn to swim visit our website at www.ssleisure.co.uk or contact Kingfisher Leisure Centre on 01787 375656 or Hadleigh Pool & Leisure on 01473 823470

Alice in Wonderland is a whimsical book full of strange fairy-tale characters in make believe settings. What better material for the sharpest creative minds and dancers of the Royal Ballet Company? Their recent production of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland gave everyone involved carte blanch to bring the book to life on the stage of the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. Happily, Fidelis ballet-lovers were able to enjoy all this glut of artistic talent closer to home when this sumptuous production was beamed in live to Cineworld Ipswich. A magical evening. Lunch Bunch:- The Saracen’s Head, Newton Green more than satisfied this month’s diners with their tasty generous portions of home cooked food, friendly service, pleasant ambience and competitive prices. Wait Until Dark: - A gripping tale skilfully told by the experienced cast of The Original Theatre Company. Originally a 60’s production, the relentless search for drugs, extreme fear, human resilience and ingenuity resonated with today’s audiences. Speaker:- Back down to earth with our speaker Shoomi Chowdhury, a human rights lawyer and Education Officer at Amnesty International. Shoomi spoke about the extensive work of Amnesty world-wide with respect to Women’s Rights and the upholding of the Declaration of Human Rights Charter. There were questions at the end of her talk mostly relating to public perception and attitudes to Muslims in the UK. An interesting organisation trying to tackle monumental human rights issues.

Ipswich Mosque:- Shoomi and her father invited members to visit their place of worship in Ipswich. It was a most informative, unusual morning. The group were warmly received and shown round the Mosque. They were also able to witness morning prayers and the ritual preparation before it. Our hosts not only clarified common misunderstandings about their faith but also happily answered all of the many questions we had. A unique and positive experience for all involved. JD

Yuletide Greetings As Christmas draws closer we can finally reveal what Maximus has been up to…. he has been busy setting up a Reverse Advent Calendar. Instead of opening a ‘door’ to a treat each day of Advent, we will be placing an item into our Christmas Hamper which will then be donated to the Storehouse Foodbank in Sudbury. Our donations will be added to emergency food bags and given to those who need a little helping hand. If you would like to donate to our hamper, please pop into reception to see Maximus, Kerry or Sabina. Wishing you the timeless treasures of Christmas. The warmth of home, the love of family and the company of good friends. Have a blessed and meaningful Christmas and happy New Year. Thank you very much for choosing Hadleigh Physiotherapy and we look forward to seeing you in the new year. Hadleigh Physiotherapy will be closed from the 23rd of December until the 1st of January inclusive. Your Hadleigh Physiotherapy Team

News from Kersey School Owls Owls class are continuing their learning about World War Two. They have found out about The Blitz, rationing, Remembrance Day and the roles played by different countries during the war. We are preparing a short jive dance for our VE day style celebration afternoon in December, where we will be sharing our war time cooking, singing and other entertainment. We can't wait! Badgers We have started the term off by a great trip to Mountfitchet Castle. We enjoyed learning all about how the Normans lived and worked. Our favourite part was getting to launch a catapult that needed over 5 people to get it to work. At the end of the term Badgers became Vikings for the day. Making our own bread and mead, which we thoroughly enjoyed, as well as making brooches to show which tribe we are part of. As part of Remembrance Day we have created our own origami poppies. It was hard work but we followed the instructions carefully and are excited to wear them as part of our service. Hedgehogs Hedgehogs class had a fantastic trip to Colchester Zoo to conclude our topic about Africa. We had a great time feeding the giraffes and elephants; taking the train to visit the lemurs; seeing lots of African animals up close and learning even more in our educational session led by zoo staff. We are now learning about houses and homes and this week had a visit from the Three Little Pigs. They need help building a new house! Over the coming weeks we will be very busy investigating the best materials and best location for their house. Squirrels This half term we started off by learning all about Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night. We acted out the story and then had a go at ordering / re - telling the story correctly in our books. As part of our homework the children made some fantastic fireworks including some impressive rockets! This week we have thought about Remembrance Day and have created our own poppies ready for our church service on Friday. Rehearsals are well on the way, ready for our Nativity at the beginning of December. We are enjoying learning all the different songs.

Let’s start by wishing everyone in and around Hadleigh a Happy Christmas, from all of us at French’s. 2017 has looked a slightly better year for us, due to those few new people who have appeared and offered their help to keep our Animal Rescue Registered Charity and Not-for-Profit Care farm going. What we need for 2018 are more people to come on board as part of our team and bring along their talents, wisdom and experience, or sponsorship to us. Please do not hesitate in calling me if you have a few hours a week to spare. We still need volunteers to help with the animals and physical help on the farm, along with someone who has experience in book keeping and someone who can help and advise us in the growing of vegetables and plants. If you would like to come to us as a volunteer, you will have a choice of working around or with the animals, or with the people who have mental health or learning difficulties. There is a day in the week available for another mental health group to work with us, so if you run a group or have a son or daughter who you think would benefit from a few hours a week at French’s, please email or call me to arrange a meeting and visit, I would love you to see how beneficial working in our environment can be for your participants or child. Spending time at French’s has worked out fantastic for a few individuals who came to us with confidence problems, don’t be afraid to call, I am here to help. I am really pleased to have received some amazing feedback and good results from the groups and individuals we have been helping throughout 2017. The picture enclosed was taken of the young people at French’s from a group run by Mag’s called ‘Wots Up’ a community mental health group from Ipswich. (Permission is always ask for and given for any photos we put to print) Some of the people I would like to thank for their help this year are: David Brown, Robin Hodgkinson, Richard Broom, Jane Nuttney, Emily and her mum Anne, Hayley and our girls Lissy and Courtney, who both work hard keeping our animals looked after, fed and comfortable, plus Richard our new landlord. WE have a Christmas raffle running in December with some good prizes, please let me know if you would like to buy some tickets, or would like to take a raffle book for us to sell tickets to your friends, family, or workmates. French’s Care Haven also welcome donations through Just txt Giving, txt the word ANIM15 to 70070 and choose your donation of £5 or £10. All monies go toward our rescued animals. Your donations and help are very much appreciated. Happy Christmas And Happy New Year To You All Volunteers, Sponsors And Fund Raisers Needed Please contact: Jann Turner 01473 833944 / 07747 755556 Email: jann.turner@hotmail.co.uk

Christmas Greetings Margaret and Jim Wilding wish everyone reading this A happy and blessed Christmas.

Hadleigh Art Club Activities A fine array of watercolour paintings resulted thanks to Issy Wright’s workshop on October 24th. Subsequently tips and technique picked up during her class were employed on the afternoon devoted to ‘Autumn Leaves’. These can be viewed on Hadleigh Art Club Face Book page. Members, the following week enjoyed looking at themselves in order to create a self-portrait. On the 21st the task was to decorate a letter rather in the manner of scribes of old and then on the 28th of the month they set about designing a Christmas card. This wide range of activities keep our members in their toes and broadens their skills. New members are welcome to join. The meetings are held in the Hadleigh Library Seminar Room every Tuesday afternoon at 2o’clock until 4o’clock. The delights for December include; 5th Create a Christmas Cartoon or design decorations with a Christmas theme. 12th. as Winter gets its grip on us paint a bleak landscape. Then we all relax with some Festive Jollies on the 19th of the month. Next Year the first meeting will be on the 9th of January.

Shame on these selfish people Having a new kitchen is very exciting and generally the new owner will proudly show it off to their close friends, family and neighbours. if your friend, family or neighbour has recently refurbished their home and proudly presents it to you, be aware they could be responsible for this - recently dumped along with the rest of their kitchen cupboards, tiles, childrens toys and other rubbish in the hedgerows around the beautiful village of kersey. They could take it to the tip 3 miles away but obviously don’t have that level of intelligence. If you know who is responsible for this or other incidents of fly tipping – report them - it’s your countryside too! Dumping waste on any land which doesn't have an Environmental Permit, or allowing others to do so, on your behalf is a criminal offence. You could face very large fines and even be sent to prison. Apart from being an eyesore, flytipping can lead to serious pollution of land and waterways, blight our countryside and open spaces, increase fear of crime, and harm wildlife and human health. The Council and the Environment Agency are responsible for clearing up or investigating fly-tipping on public land. Clearing fly-tipping from private land is the responsibility of the landowner. Fly-tipping costs council taxpayers and landowners significant amounts of money to clear away. Everyone has a legal responsibility or 'duty of care' to make sure that all waste from their household or business is disposed of correctly and doesn't end up being fly-tipped. Some people make money by charging to take waste away illegally and then fly-tipping it. You could face penalties of up to £5,000 if you don’t check that the company or person you give waste to: • has a licence to carry waste • is not taking it to an unlicensed site There are a number of Household Waste and Recycling Centres throughout Suffolk where residents can dispose of household waste. These sites also accept business waste for a fee.

Hadleigh CC members have enjoyed a fruitful 2017. The Club’s ethos is “cycling for all” and amongst our 100 or so members, we have toddlers on balance bikes, competitive teens, timetrialists, coffee and cake social riders, commuters, adult novices and veteran racers. This year we have had a very active committee happy to volunteer, coach, set up exhibitions and promote the Club at the Hadleigh Show. We have benefited from the input of Molly Cutmore and Ryan Gooderham who developed their riding skills with the Juniors and now race for The Pedal House. Our new committee members, Phil Barnes, Gale Pryor, Kate Billingham, Farhad Abdly, Rickaby Shearly-Sanders and Paul Harman have brought enthusiasm and fresh ideas. The Club, of course, could not survive without the hard work and dedication of Simon King (Secretary) and Benson Ho (Treasurer). Particular pleasing has been the regular Sunday social rides from the George, with many new ride leaders and Lucy Jay’s informal rides on Monday evenings from the High School. We have had a third Gayford Flyer sportive which attracted nearly 200 riders and a second Get Back to Cycling course for women. The Club has continued to run very successful Junior sessions on a weekly basis with coaches Adam Chamberlin, Martin Nichols, Chris Herron and Simon King and volunteer helpers. We have supported riders at Mud, Sweat and Gears across the Region, including another Hintlesham round. Mike Motteram, Chair of the Club, said, “It’s been a full-on year. We’ve had cyclists participating in a whole range of disciplines on and off the road. The Committee has begun to explore ideas for 2018. These include encouraging new riders to take up group cycling with shorter, slower rides in the Spring.” “Happy Christmas to all our members and for all Hadleigh folk who ride bikes, stay safe in 2018.” Riders are invited to gentle social rides starting at 9am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. Whatfield Players In late October, the PLAYERS were on stage with the support from Hadleigh Community Choir, and Hadleigh Ukelele Group, presenting "SHOWTIME TWO." Two nights of good audiences came for a show brimful of a variety of music, and comedy. A cast of 22, which included 7 musicians, performed a great variety of music, as diverse as Rogers and Hart, Flanders and Swan, Cole Porter, John Denver, and Rimsky Korsakov. Comedy and comic verse came from Sandy Taylor, and Alan Melville. All made for a relaxed and lively evening which has received positive feedback reports. The Players thank all those who supported us, and who enabled us to make a profit. A donation of £100.00 will be sent to EAST ANGLIAN AIR AMBULANCE. We congratulate our producers, Sheila Ashton and Marilyn Lyne. Diane Armour (Chair)

Wattisham Station Heritage Wattisham Station Heritage have just released an educational and historic documentary DVD about Wattisham Flying Station called "Wattisham Both Sides of the Fence" depicting the the start of construction in 1938 throughout its unique history right up until the current time. The documentary has been three years in the making and has been made to broadcast standards by a professional film company with many interviews of local residents giving a detailed account of life around the Flying Station during its history. The double DVD was launched on Saturday 14th October with a private showing in the Officers Mess at Wattisham Flying Station to those who made it all possible. The launch was a great success with great reviews resulting with the first batch being sold out within the first hour. Wattisham Station has a unique place in British aviation history, it was from here aircraft made the first bombing raid of the Second World War. It became a strategic base for the US Army Air Force in 1943 and played a vital role in the defence of the west during the Cold War era. The aerodrome was also home to the famous Black Arrows RAF display team. Today, Wattisham remains one of the largest operational flying stations in Europe and home to Britain's Apache helicopter squadrons. The documentary contains original interviews from people who helped shape history across the decades and fascinating archive footage, this is the story of Wattisham Air Station and the surrounding community, from both sides of the fence... For further information and to see a trailer please see our web site www.wattishamstationheritage.org

This certiďŹ cate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk In November the Houses of Parliament celebrated UK Parliament Week, an annual festival of events encouraging citizens to “engage, explore and empower”. Whilst there were a whole host of events in Westminster itself, as always for me the most important part was engaging with my constituents here in South Suffolk. In Parliament week itself I visited two South Suffolk schools, in Stoke-by-Nayland and Tattingstone, to take questions on the workings of our democracy. The questions from pupils never fail to engage. By my unscientific estimate, the two most common ones from primary school pupils are: “have you ever met the Queen?” and “how much do you earn?” The latter suggests that our youngest students may have a welcome consideration of pecuniary issues that bodes well for our future prosperity! Of course, the issue of ‘political engagement’ must be tampered with managing expectations about what one can deliver. It can be very tempting in this job to tell people simply what they want to hear, and avoid the reality of what one can actually achieve. For example, many constituents implore me every week to engage in planning matters ranging from single properties to applications for a hundred plus new homes. In fact, planning is in most cases a matter for the district council and not an area where Parliament has direct authority. So, jumping on the bandwagon of people who are unhappy with local applications is, in my view, an opportunistic way to approach a subject that should always be tackled as objectively as possible. My focus is therefore on matters where national Government is most clearly responsible. This is particularly true of Brexit, a matter that will have a huge impact on our environment and agricultural economy. Hence, I was delighted to recently welcome Secretary of State for the Environment Michael Gove to meet 40 South Suffolk farmers at the Stoke by Nayland hotel, to hear their concerns. This was an example of Parliamentary engagement at its best. I look forward to much more of it in the new year, and wish you all a very merry Christmas and prosperous 2018.

The HDAA are supporting Together Tuesday and the Ansell Memories Café to stay active and connect due to the generosity of Brett Valley Lodge In August this year the Brett Valley Lodge made a generous donation to the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance of £500 to support local community groups to stay active and connected. The Alzheimer’s society report that activities can help those living with dementia to stay independent and provide a great sense of enjoyment. Staying active and connected can keep you and your carer in touch with other people and can improve your quality of life. One of the most important ways of keeping involved and active is simply to talk to others, and not allow yourself to become isolated. Keeping in touch with other people can make you feel better now, and when you need more help in the future. The Together Tuesday group and Ansell Memories Café offer just this for the residents of Hadleigh and are always looking for fun activities for the attendees to take part in. The Brett Valley Lodge have bought some amazing equipment for the groups to share, including parachute games, octobands, chair activity bingo and move it or lose it dvd workouts. Jill Mason, HDAA activities coordinator says ‘we are so excited for the equipment to arrive, our clients love to stay active and connected with by taking part in fun activates. All that matters is that everyone enjoys themselves, whether this is by taking part or watching from the sides. We are immensely grateful to the Lodge for their kind support.’ Being physically active can help raise your self-esteem, helping you from feeling anxious or depressed. You do not have to have dementia to benefit from being a little more active. For more information on Together Tuesday or the Ansell Memories Café contact Jill Mason on hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk

TOW N HOUSE FA RM

Hadleigh Nursing Home is extending a warm welcome to the public to join its residents and staff at a glittering line-up of Christmas events. The build-up to the festive season will begin with a visit to the Friars Road home by Hadleigh Community Choir at 11am on December 11. Join us for a glass of mulled wine and mince pies. On December 13, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, we will be hosting our regular coffee morning – come along to meet other townsfolk and, as its Christmas, there will be mince pies and mulled wine as well as tea and coffee. On December 15, from 3pm to 5.30pm, local families are invited to join us for our Christmas party with a free buffet and seasonal musical entertainment from singer Lindy Lou. On December 22, from 2pm to 3pm, professional musicians from the charity Lost Chord will be making their first visit to the home. Soprano Ailsa Mainwaring will be joined by pianist Elspeth Wilkes for the first of 12 monthly sessions designed to provide musical therapy for people living with dementia. Helena Muller, who started the Yorkshire-based charity in 1999, said: “Music in particular appears to generate responses in people even in the late stages of dementia. “It is miraculous how music has such a beneficial impact – it brings people back to life which is just wonderful.” Home manager Emma Beckett said: “We’d love to see people at any of our events and to show them our lovely home.” Call us on 01473 372149

David, who died on the 31st of July this year, was a well known local milkman, butchers assistant and gardener in the Hadleigh area. David wishes it to be known that he has now completed his life sentence on earth. He is no longer a going concern, and will shortly be pushing up the daisies, and will be entering the haunting business. So watch out all of you that still owe him money. Tommy Robinson

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers / Hadleigh Walkers December’s walk on Saturday 16th heads out towards Elmsett. We will catch the Ipswich 91 service at 0925 (Co-op side) and alight at Coronation Cottages. From there our route will take us to The Covey Cottages, Potash Farm, Elmsett Gate Farm, Aldham Priory, Shooting Box, Wolves Wood and ending up at the Hadleigh Cock for a Christmas drink. The route is about 7 miles. For those hoping to use their bus passes, note that the bus leaves before the 0930 deadline so you will have to pay. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Elmsett adopts a Community Emergency Plan Elmsett has become the 16th community in Babergh to complete and adopt a Community Emergency Plan which had been drawn up by the Parish Council preparing the village for anything this winter. On Wednesday 1 November the village’s Emergency Plan Committee met with Babergh DC’s Emergency Planning Officer Sue Herne who presented them with an Emergency Planning Pack containing many useful items which include high viz jackets, a first aid kit, solar blankets, a wind up torch and a wind up radio to help them support their community during an incident Community Emergency Plans are created by Community Emergency Planning Groups which enable them to support their communities during an incident as well as supporting the emergency services. They also help community leaders understand the response from other organisations, including the fire service, police and local authorities, putting them in touch with officers in each organisation that can help them. Any communities that are interested can get more information by contacting emergency.planning@suffolk.gov.uk

At the November meeting we welcomed Jason Middleton. Jason told us the history of the pearl which is one of the longest used decorative gems. 1500 BC pearls were traded alongside silk and gold. Now Hong Kong has a huge exhibition centre four times the floor area of the O2 and seven floors high, where dealers from around the world meet to buy and sell all types of precious gems. Natural pearls are formed when a parasite enters a mussel or oyster, the mollusc secrets a calcium carbonate substance to protect itself, this forms the pearl. Divers used to scour the seabed looking for these molluscs, when they had a bagful they would surface and open the shells and hope to find a pearl. Now most pearls are produced in farms in China and Japan, a very small fragment of shell is carefully inplanted into the mollusc to start the development of the pearl. Depending on it's size some shells can contain up to fifteen pearls. Jason showed us samples of naturally coloured pearls and ones with different shapes. Pearls can take from 1 to 15 years to grow, Australia grow the largest and most expensive. Jason was thanked for giving such an interesting talk. After tea and coffee we discussed our future activities. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 19th December in the Seminar Room above the Library, High Street, Hadleigh at 7.30pm; David Atkins will be discussing "Why don't they have funny Christmas cards with religious themes?" Do come and join us.

Put a stop to this threat to our roads and children’s safety

Stop the expansion of Hadleigh Quarry The small quarry at Aldham Mill Hill has applied to Suffolk County Council for permission to install a huge washing / processing plant, 4 associated silt lagoons and a stockpile. If approved it would totally alter the nature of the site and lead to a massive increase in the range of activities undertaken there, with wide ranging and serious consequences.

• The wash plant would be a monster piece of equipment – equivalent in length to 3 big buses. In fact, it is suspiciously large relative to the quarry’s output. So much so that we suspect a longer term, hidden agenda to bring in aggregates from far and wide to keep the monster fed. • Apart from the risk of injury to children/teenagers from falling off the machinery and climbing on unstable stockpiles of gravel, the lagoons would create the additional risk of drowning. These worries are not groundless. Fencing around the quarry is completely inadequate and youngsters have been seen playing on the site already, and in one instance the police were called. • It would mean at least double the number of trucks on local roads which would add to the congestion and road safety problems already experienced at the Aldham Mill Hill/A1071 junction.

• The new installation would be noisy, create lots of dust and lead to mud on the road in winter.

Slow moving, heavy gravel trucks join Aldham Mill Hill here...

S PAS H BY LEIG D A H

...and then use the ‘dogleg’ on the bypass – making this existing accident spot even more dangerous.

TO MORRISONS

Do you know of any accidents or near misses at this junction? Whether the quarry owners obtain S.C.C. permission to extend their commercial activities to the extent that they could permanently destroy this area of national beauty is something that cannot be forecast. But the fact remains that they will still be able to work the quarry under their present permission until the year 2040. The junction is inadequately designed for the amount of general traffic that passes through it currently, so imagine the risks of all those extra juggernauts joining it every working day.

We are aware that in August 2016 there was a serious collision at this junction, and another about a similar time this year. Should you know of any other incident or near miss it will be helpful to us to hear from you. You can email the address below with details. Plus if you have already made an objection using the petition, please make sure you’ve added your traffic concerns to your comments box. Email: fredbreyer12@gmail.com

We are concerned with what is about to result in disaster and affect the rest of Hadleigh if allowed to happen. The Hadleigh Quarry had been unused for decades since its minor use to supply the laying of the Hadleigh bypass and A1070 in 1985. In 2001 we contested an application by Tarmac to change their permit to intensify their working at the quarry and we were successful. The present owners of the permit, whose workings have been at a very low level in the last two years of ownership, are now applying to do virtually the same as the rejected Tarmac proposal, but on a much larger scale. The result will be an environmental disaster both to the landscape and to all the associated consequences which we are trying to protect future generations against. Above all is the effect that the expansion would have on the ever increasing traffic on the bypass at the Aldham Hill/Calais Street Junction AND ON ROAD SAFETY for everyone that uses that junction. Make your views and concerns known by signing our online petition – for details see our whole page in this issue. And please also make your views known to your local Councillor, be it Town, District or County. Hadleigh Town Council have made their objections to the plan, why not make yours? Thank you on behalf of the protest group, bgacopy@aol.com

Brett Valley Review Issue 2 (Winter 2017-2018 Issue 1 of Brett Valley Review was received by Suffolk Local History Council as ‘an attractive, accessible and very well researched local history magazine and is Issue 2 Winter 2017-2018 Price £5 highly recommended’, something to live up to in Issue 2. I hope that you will find the historical miscellany of interest starting with Monks Eleigh parishioners attending the church court at Hadleigh on matters of morality, Sabbath breaking and probate of wills and ending with the graceful village sign at Milden, with the river itself ‘from source to sea’ the subject of the colour feature. Other articles include moving house at Kersey, a charity providing bread or fuel at Preston St. Mary and the site of Cosford, which gave its name to one of the districts through which the Brett flows. An interesting character is Revd John Clubbe of Whatfield (rector 1735-1773), whose circle of friends included artists Thomas Gainsborough and William Hogarth. John wrote satirical works, the most famous being The History and Antiquities of the Ancient Villa of Wheatfield, which has caught out many people over the centuries thinking it was a true history of Whatfield. However, it still makes an interesting read. Your letters, photographs and memories of the communities in the Brett Valley during the recent past and articles relevant to their history are most welcome. Please let me know if you would like an aspect of local history investigated and I will do my best! News from The Station Safe to say that winter has truly gripped us. Frosty mornings, bitter cold winds and potential hazardous driving conditions are now part of our every day. Some words of advice and useful tips from us here at Hadleigh Police Station • Spend a few extra minutes clearing and defrosting your windscreens properly, do not put yourselves or other road users at risk by driving with just a small patch of clear windscreen. • A safe journey starts in preparation beforehand. Always have a blanket, shovel, warm coat & gloves, wellies, de-icer, scraper and fluorescent tabard in your boot. You never know when you might need them. • Set off earlier on your planned journey, drive slower and carefully to arrive safely. • Think carefully, is your journey necessary ? If it is, allow a greater stopping distance between you and the car in front, particularly on wet or icy roads. Hopefully you will find these tips useful, but if you require any further advice on road safety or crime reduction, now that the evenings are darker, please contact us, details below. Other issues in the town:- Anti-Social Behaviour This is still very prevalent and we continue to be advised of many issues on a daily basis. We still have a group of youths who, for want of a better word, are terrorising our parks, public spaces, skate park and both large supermarkets in the town. They have no respect for the town, the residents of the town, their families and anyone in authority, which has been borne out by their actions throughout the summer holidays and continues to do so. If you experience any of this anti-social behaviour; if you see large groups of youths drinking, fighting, smoking, shouting or swearing at members of the public – please call it in to Suffolk Police on 101 (non-emergency) or 999 (emergency) or email the SNT at the address below. We know it is happening, but we would like your help. We want residents in the town who feel intimidated / scared or alarmed by this behaviour, to let us know so that we include in our action plan. Measures are being put in place to address this behaviour by us at the police station to try and bring back living in Hadleigh, a pleasant experience, and not one where residents are fearful of going out of their homes in the evenings. The parks in the town are for everyone’s enjoyment and should not be spoilt by a few. I would also like to mention again that Hadleigh is just one of 49 villages that we cover from the Police Station in the town. So if you do not see PC’s or PCSO’s on a daily basis, it does not mean we are not working, it means our time is being spent elsewhere dealing with other issues in other areas. On behalf of Sgt Miah and the rest of Hadleigh SNT, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all residents a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year. See you all in 2018, PCSO 3173 Julia Bignell Hadleigh Police Station, Magdalen Road, Hadleigh, IP7 5AD Email: hadleigh.snt@suffolk.pnn.police.uk Follow us on twitter : @HadleighPolice Police Connect: suffolk.police.uk/policeconnect

Bildeston Primary School Learning and Growing Together Able Writers’ Day Two of our Kestrel class children attended an Able Writers’ Day at Chilton Community Primary School on Friday 13 October 2017. They worked with the dynamic children’s author, David Bedford. David is an acclaimed children’s author of over 70 books and has an international reputation as a speaker, creative writing tutor and nurturer of children’s reading. The children had a fantastic day and came away with a signed book as a reminder of their day. U9 Cross Country Event Six of our children were selected to go to Hadleigh High School to compete in an U9 cross country event on Wednesday 1 November 2017. They competed against other schools within our pyramid of primary schools. Our highest positions were 10th in the girl’s race and 9th in the boy’s race. Village Tag Rugby Event On 2 November 2017, a team of nine of our KS2 children competed in the annual village Tag Rugby festival at Whatfield Primary School. They worked really hard as a team and they came second overall which was a great result. U11 Tag Rugby Festival The same Tag Rugby team went along to St Joseph’s College on 7 November to play against other primary schools from across the county. They had a long but great afternoon winning three matches, drawing two and losing one. Remembrance Sunday Four of our children represented our school at the service held at the market place on Sunday 12 November. It was an opportunity for pupils to think about and commemorate the sacrifices made by previous generations, as well as the people who work for our security today. They read poems they had written and laid a wreath of poppies that had been made at school. Children in Need On Friday 17 November 2017, the children supported Children in Need by dressing up in the theme of “Be Bright, Be Seen” wearing lots of bright and fluorescent colours for the day! This tied in very well with the work our road safety officers are doing. So they were raising money for a great cause that makes a massive difference to the lives of disadvantaged children across the UK and raising awareness for road safety! We had a full hall for the AGM on 4th November, and our speaker was Dr Ken Thompson, author of No Nettles Required, An Ear To The Ground, Compost, The Sceptical Gardener and many more. A regular contributor on The Daily Telegraph’s gardening page, he lectured at Sheffield University in the Department of Plant and Animal Sciences for 20 years. He gave us an informative talk debunking commonly held garden lore, for example, broken crocks in the base of planters do not improve drainage, watering in sunshine does not cause scorching on leaves, and why planting with Mycorrhizal fungi cannot be proven to make any difference to the development and growth of plants. It was a fascinating talk by an eminent scientist, which gave us all food for thought. Local garden author, Barbara Segall, was on hand to sign copies of her beautiful new book, Secret Gardens of East Anglia. Looking forward to the new year, January 6th is our first outing, where we will have our traditional New Year get together to walk in the Winter Garden at Anglesey Abbey. We will meet in the lobby at 10.30 am. Our next lecture is on Saturday February 3rd ‘Controlling Garden Pests and Attracting Wildlife’ by Julian Ives. This will be held at Hitcham Village hall at 2.30pm, doors open at 2pm. Tickets are now on sale for CLEVE WEST, and his talk- Healing Gardens - at Chamberlin Hall, Bildeston on February 17th, at 2.30 pm. Cleve will talk from a personal perspective on Healing Gardens, how they enhance well-being and even serve as a form of therapy. Examples range from private sanctuaries to his own allotment, and the much celebrated Horatio’s Garden, and Cleve will touch on broader environmental issues that threaten the biggest garden of all. Advance booking only, members £7.50, non- members £12.50, including tea, and are available from Matthew Long, flagpartnership@btinternet.com. Demand for this is expected to be high, and tickets are already selling fast, so if you want to come, hurry up and book!! A donation of £2.50 per ticket will go to the charity Horatio’s Garden. After this event, all future meetings will be held at Chamberlin Hall, as we will be moving there on a permanent basis. The membership is increasing, and we need more space, so we are looking forward to the new venue, and meetings will still be held on Saturdays, with doors opening at 2pm, as usual. The meeting following this move will be held on March 3rd, Steve Edney, The Delights of Dahlias. In the meantime we wish all our members a Very Happy and Peaceful Christmas, and Good Gardening for the New Year. eastangliangardengroup.onesuffolk.net

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our last meeting Monday 13th November 2017.... and what a thoroughly enjoyable meeting that was! We welcomed back BBC Radio Suffolk's Matt Tanton-Brown, who covered, on the face of it, the somewhat scary subject of plant pests and diseases, but it turned not only to be informative, but highly entertaining too. Matt was trained at Wisley and has a wealth of horticultural knowledge which he is great at sharing. Not only, for instance, did we learn about what sprays work to control various pests, but also some of the more deviant ways predators use to devour aphids etc. Matt was also careful to point out key environmental aspects, such as when to use any sprays so as to avoid impacting on bees and other garden friendly insects. We now also know that not only is male urine an effective way of reducing the impact that muntjac deer can have on trees and shrubs but, crucially, that it must be sprayed at least three feet away from the plant to avoid them simply just stretching across! There were so many tips I scribbled down, and that can often be the great thing about the Garden Club - there is always something to learn or to take away and use. Our next meeting on Monday 11th December..... The next meeting sees the return of our annual Christmas Quiz. This always proves to be a fun evening, with questions being set in a very lighthearted and non-technical manner. The questions all have a gardening theme, but are very general and in the past have varied from identifying objects just by feel, to a music round of garden related songs. We are a friendly bunch and teams are formed on the night so no one is left out. Why not come and join us? It will be a totally free evening and snacks and drinks will also be provided. As usual the event will take place in the Town Hall (entrance opposite The Ram) and will start at 7.30pm. Pleasingly our membership has been on the increase recently, as word is seemingly getting around and people are coming along to find out more about us. So do come along and give us a try - a festive welcome awaits and we look forward to seeing you. Andy Leeder, Chairman

Down to Earth ...with Dave Halfway into November and we have only had a couple of frosty nights. Still, enough to totally blacken the top growth of the dahlias on the allotment. This was a bit sad as there were still many flowers. Everything above ground is cut down and put on the compost, with two long rows of plants, this is several barrowloads. I shall do the same as last year and leave the deeply planted tubers in the ground. A generous mulch of straw based manure from the nearby stables should give enough winter protection. The gardening books say the tubers should be dug up, turned upside down to drain and then stored somewhere dry and frost free over winter. This is fine if you have the storage space and time to do it, as I don't, they have to take their chance where they are. Another possible option is to just leave the cut down tops where they are on top of the tubers to give some protection. As some of the stalks are pretty thick and would need removing eventually, I think they are better off used as the start of a new compost heap. The asparagus ferns are now yellowed and also need to be cut down and put on the compost, they can be a bit woody and are best put at the bottom of the heap, or even taken to the tip. It never ceases to amaze me as to the different ways that plants react to the cold weather. For instance, dahlias are totally blackened, the various brassicas just don't seem to mind, indeed Brussels are improved after a frost as are parsnips. Pansies droop for a while and then perk up again. Some fuchsias are killed off and others are frost proof. Pelargoniums will die but true geraniums will survive, every plant is potentially different that is why it is important to keep any labels that come with the plant and, where possible, give it the conditions it requires. The grass is still growing and can be given a light trim with the mower blades set quite high, try not to walk on the lawn if it is wet or frosty. As a bonus any remaining leaves will be picked up by the mower. Some final hedge and shrub trimming will be carried out in the next few weeks. Having tried for the past few months to buy some vine weevil drench without success, we were told at a recent garden club meeting that the original product had been withdrawn. Thankfully a re-formulated product is now available. It is becoming very difficult to buy some of the chemicals that have been in use for years. This is due in part to understandable concerns about harm to bees and other wildlife. Keep the birds' water and feed filled up. Even on a cold frosty morning we get a lot of birds bathing in their dish by the patio window. As we sit having our breakfast it makes you feel quite cold just watching them. The dish is filled up several times during the day. That's all for this time, Dave

Christmas is always a time of temptation and excess but if you’re trying to keep your waistline in check, here’s a few simple tricks to avoid gaining pounds: • Only eat at the table - eating while watching TV means we can eat 40% more without realising! • Keep the nibbles and chocolates out of sight – the more visible they are the more difficult it is to resist. And put all leftovers away in the fridge as soon as possible. • Save some for later - you don’t have to try everything at once and you’ll enjoy it more. • Use smaller plates and use a tall slim glass instead of a short stubby one. • Go for a brisk walk after your Christmas dinner before settling down to watch the Queen. • Don’t overbuy the goodies – much more damage is done eating up all the extras afterwards – Christmas is 2 days not a month!! Donate unopened boxes of biscuits or chocolates to a worthy cause. To avoid that “oh my goodness I can’t move” feeling stop eating as soon as you’re satisfied, or better still, a bit before as it takes 20 minutes for the brain to register that you’re full. But if 2018 arrives and you’ve still got some excess weight to lose why not try Cambridge Weight Plan to retrain your eating habits for a healthy New Year..! Cambridge Weight Plan, with over 30 years research & knowledge, behind it has 6 steps designed to enable you to lose weight, and also shows you how to make long-term changes to maintain a slim and healthy life. Christmas Concert: Sunday 3rd December 6.30 pm St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Our popular Christmas Concert is on the first Sunday of this month – usual time: 6.30 p.m. and again and we are very grateful to Father Peter and the church for the opportunity of playing again at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. As it is Advent Sunday, we shall all sing ‘O come, O come, Emmanuel’, and Thomas Simon has very kindly agreed to sing the first verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ again. The third Carol we shall sing is: It came upon the midnight clear’. The programme opens with that lovely chorale by Bach: Sleepers’ Awake. Other items include the Rondo from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Albeniz’s Tango, ‘Walking in the air’, Borodin’s beautiful Nocturne, and the tuneful middle movements from Dvorak’s 8th. Symphony. As usual, entrance is free, and all are welcome, but we do ask you to give a donation as you leave. This will go towards the cost of the concert and a charity to be announced. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 25 (Winter 2017 – 2018) Firstly, I would like to thank Kelvin Avis and his staff for their part over the year in making Bildeston History Quarterly a Winter 2017-2018 Price £3 magazine that, I am told, many readers like Issue 25 to keep. John Gardiner, now of Stowmarket, is welcomed back to the magazine’s pages with the story of his grandparents on his mother’s side, John and May Pool, who owned and ran Still’s Stores in Market Place from the 1930s to the 1960s. The business will be remembered not only by people who were resident in the village at the time but also inhabitants of the surrounding district to whom deliveries were made. Although Richard Wilson was not a native and only lived here from 1804 until 1837, he had a great impact upon the appearance of the village, which can still be traced today. Why are there no houses on the road leading up to St Mary Magdalene’s church; why is there a very long brick wall running along High Street; why is Paddock Way so name? These features and many more are all down to him. He made his money as a successful solicitor and spent it in creating himself a landscaped park around his home here, which he called The Mansion. The parish church has been identified as one of nine such medieval buildings to be the work of one particular architect, whose signature style included four distinctive features among which were arcade capitals elaborately carved with angels and foliage. At Bildeston, twelve human-faced angels – with shoulderlength wavy hair, their bodies feathered and arms folded across their breasts – have outstretched overlapping wings that encircle some of the arcade columns. Their jolly faces have been watching proceedings for 600 years, as different forms of worship have been carried out. ‘Before the King’s Head became the Six Bells’ looks at John Weld and his family. De-frocked in 1662, he had to leave the rectory but continued to live in Bildeston, which was against the law. When he died three years later, his possessions were itemised in an inventory, which forms a room by room guide of how his home was furnished and used. Your letters, pictures and memories concerning Bildeston in the recent past and articles relevant to the history of the village and its surrounding countryside are most welcome. What standard of vision is needed for driving? Car drivers (group 1) must be able to read a car number plate from 20 meters. You also need to be able read the 6/12 line of letters on an optometrists Snellen chart using both eyes together. How to check your vision You can test yourself by reading a car number plate from 20 meters. Your optometrist will check your vision on a Snellen chart during an eye examination. Driving with eyesight below the required standard is illegal and may also mean your motor insurance is not valid. Medical conditions You must tell the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) about certain eye or general medical conditions. The most common conditions (but not the only ones) are age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Blind spots in your vision create a risk of accidents, especially involving pedestrians. An eye examination carried out at D J Dunstone will always include a visual field test, to sensitively check your peripheral vision. What should I do if I feel my vision is getting worse for driving? You should see your optometrist who will be able to tell you if you need a new spectacle prescription, whether you need to be referred to an ophthalmologist (eye doctor), or if you have a condition that should be declared to the DVLA. If spectacles are required for distance, specially designed Rodenstock ‘Road’ lenses are available from D J Dunstone to optimise vision for the dynamic task of driving. These are available in single vision distance or varifocal form and perform just as well in every other way. For more information about driving vision please see www.dunstoneinsight.com Here you can also find lens information and details of our ‘Road’ lens promotion. You are welcome to attend D J Dunstone Optometry at 3 Queen Street in Hadleigh if you have any queries regarding your vision or are due a routine eye examination. Please telephone 01473 823755 to discuss your requirements or make an appointment.

Pause for Thought Thank you for sharing a few minutes with me. We all have mixed feelings about events that we celebrate each year. As the years pass there comes a time when we prefer to forget dates that bring sad and even bad memories. Christmas, Easter, Whit Sunday and many other "Bank Holidays" mean time off from work, and school breaks when the young people are sat in front of the television and/or keep their mobile phone in their hand, in case someone is likely to want to contact them. Christmas is about the Birth of the Lord Jesus, Easter about His Death and Resurrection, and on Whit Sunday the coming of the Holy Spirit to be a Guide and a Comforter. As Jesus was ascending, He told His disciples to talk to people about Him.There are missions set up all over the world with believers devoted to God and His son Jesus, If we have not asked Jesus to forgive us, we cannot call ourselves Christians. But of we do ask for Jesus’ forgiveness we can know that the end of our life here on earth is the beginning of our eternal life in heaven. Jean Chisholm

Happy Christmas from Hadleigh Osteopaths This is a busy and exciting time for most of us, and the last thing any body wants is to miss out on the festive celebrations due to a bad back or a cricked neck. As families come together, and there are parties and celebrations to attend, here are a few simple pointers to help you have a happy and comfortable festive season. There lots of jobs to do at this time of year; struggling back to the car, laden down with shopping, and rushing to get the presents. Consider making several trips back to the car, rather than one overburdened journey, enlist some help, or use the internet for bulky items. Food can be ordered from most shops in advance, not just on line, which takes the hassle out of playing "hunt the sprout" or "find the turkey" on Christmas Eve. Do remember how heavy the turkey is when you want to get it out of the freezer or oven. Decorating the tree is a highlight of the season, but the taller the tree, the heavier it is. Get some help in carrying it into the house, and use a step ladder to put the fairy on the top, rather than over- reaching. Extra house guests often result in people sleeping in different beds and using different pillows. If your neck is vulnerable, no-one will think you rude if you bring your own pillow. Similarly, a local hotel may have a bed that is better than an air bed, if that is what is on offer from your hosts. We regularly get calls from middle aged men immediately after Christmas, sheepishly explaining that they hurt their backs trying out their children's skateboard or wii fit. Remember, these toys are for the children! Others calls are from the people who fell asleep in the armchair, socially relaxed after a lovely big meal, waking with a stiff neck. Some of our patients present with unexplained injuries following the staff party. These may be ankle strains and sprains from falling off high heels, or simple over enthusiasm on the dance floor. Others struggle with "cocktail party" backs, from standing around chatting for several hours. If you are getting the warning signs that all is not right, please do not wait until the night before Christmas to ring us. To make an appointment, please telephone us on 01473 828585 or 07770 746224 www.hadleighosteopaths.co.uk Please note that the practice will be closed on Dec 26th, 27th,28th and Monday 1st January. Liz will be available for appointments friday 29th December between 10am and 4pm. Reception will be open during week to take bookings.

The greatest gifts I would like to end my musings this year from a personal perspective. In February I was diagnosed with cancer and I have spent the year having chemotherapy and surgery and am now in the early days of remission. The one thing that has stood out most to me, is just how important people are and not the accumulation of stuff, worries and trappings that are so easy to get bogged down by in every-day life. At this time of year, there can be overwhelming stress for some as the pressure to provide presents, food, accommodation and entertainment can take over and while all these things can be great, they are not necessarily the most important. Or rather, the emphasis on them to be perfect should not overshadow the enjoyment of sharing these experiences with others. As with most of life, time given, thoughtful intent and positive actions stay with someone far longer than anything else. My family is spread, not only throughout the county, but much further afield too and as we get older and our lives expand to take in the family of our partners’, it gets more difficult to see each other; especially all together. But this is what I am looking forward to the most. I know I will remember the hugs, fun, laughter, gossip and catching up more than any gift that can be wrapped and I urge you to make these things the focus of your festive season too. I wish you all the happiest of Christmases and a sparkling new year all round. jenny-may.com

Pearce Properties | Online So who are Gillie and Anthony Pearce and why would you entrust them to sell your property? With over 14 years experience of selling properties in France we have relocated to Suffolk, the area where we now live and love and where we are now looking to take on instructions from local vendors. Our new website is unusual because it combines both English and French properties and we sell to the worldwide market. Many of our buyers are ex pats looking to buy in either UK or France or vendors from UK living in France and wanting to relocate back to UK. We offer a very hands on service and unlike some other online property websites we are not spread nationwide as we prefer to know all our properties and vendors individually. Take a look at our new website www.pearcepropertiesonline.co.uk Our charges are low and there are no hidden costs. We will supply For Sale boards for free if required and we also advertise on all the major portals such as RIGHTMOVE, ZOOPLA and PRIME LOCATION. We are offering to take on the first 10 properties absolutely FREE of upfront payment. When we make a successful sale the cost is only 0.3%, NO SALE, NO FEE! The second 10 properties will receive a discount of £100. Our usual upfront payment is £395. So the cost will be £295. This is a special one off offer and it will be on a first come first served basis. Bear in mind that during the Christmas break it’s when house buyers have the time to browse the internet. To give you an idea of the savings to be had if we were to handle the sale of your property... if your property is on the market with a high street estate agent for, say £450,000, then with a fee of 1% you would pay £4,500. With Pearce Properties Online at 0.3% it would be only £1,350 – a saving of £3,150! Even cheaper if you take advantage of our free offer. THERE IS NO SOLE AGENCY CONTRACT TIE IN PERIOD WITH OUR SERVICES SO YOU ARE FREE TO LIST YOUR PROPERTY WITH OTHER AGENTS SHOULD YOU WISH TO DO SO. If you are already in a sole agency agreement with another agency you would need to check your contract to see from what date you can advertise elsewhere. An icy warning for drivers defrosting their cars

" $ ! "

% " # " www.gotelee.co.uk

Suffolk has woken with a shiver this week as winter edges nearer and temperatures plummet. The bitter climate is particularly hazardous for drivers, who must now contend with slippery road surfaces and icy windscreens. There’s also the risk of falling foul of the law too – as one motorist found to their cost recently when they were fined ÂŁ30 for defrosting their car by leaving the vehicle unattended with the engine running. Police are reminding drivers that it is an offence to leave a car unattended with the engine running on the public highway. Rule 123 of the Highway code states that “You must not leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine running or leave a vehicle engine Hugh Rowland running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road.â€? And it’s not only the police who take a dim view of leaving your car running unattended. The likelihood is that if your vehicle is stolen you won’t be covered by your insurance policy. Ian Crowder of the AA says: “Cold weather is a car thief’s friend and the security of the car is only as strong as the security of your keys. “If you put your keys in the car and then walk away from the vehicle you cannot expect your insurance to pay out. “You have a duty of care to not behave in an idiotic manner which puts your property at risk.â€? How can our criminal law experts help? When it comes to driving, a momentary lapse of concentration can have serious consequences. That’s why if you are facing police investigation or prosecution, you need the expert advice of a criminal law solicitor. Whether it’s a minor matter or a more serious allegation, Gotelee can provide the support of a discreet and experienced solicitor to fight your corner. Thank you to everyone, individuals and businesses who continue to support the charity and our very special thanks go to all the volunteers without whom we wouldn’t have been able to achieve so much this year. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Hello again friends! Hasn’t it been a great Autumn? The colours around the Shelley Centre have been fantastic, and the valley looks so beautiful. If I were a live horse I think I should be riding out every day to look at the view. Our clients have some interesting journeys to reach us here. We also have a Spanish lady helping us this term; she found her way here from Polstead in a left hand drive car, round all the right angle bends, with the lanes getting narrower all the way, we do congratulate and thank her! Our new boy Bryn has settled in really well and enables larger people to have riding therapy in the arena. The photos are of him being mounted at the mounting ramp, something he found difficult to begin with, and in the arena doing his work with Georgia in the saddle. Bryn’s best friends are Alfie and Bob who appeared in last month’s blog. The Centre is getting ready for our end of term carol service on December 9th, but as we go to press, we haven’t found a new born baby! There is always a tableau in Shelley Church as the Christmas story is reenacted, with our riders taking all the parts. This must be the first year when none of our riders’ families are producing, what has happened! Shall we have to use a doll for baby Jesus? It won’t spoil the wonderful evening anyway and the herd and Babs and I will enjoy seeing everyone assemble in our yard before the candle-lit procession to the church sets off. All our volunteers will be gathering for their Christmas party, a rare chance for the many different groups to meet each other. When helpers are leading or side walking in a lesson they have to be so focused on the rider that there is no chance to chatter. I expect they will be making up for it at the pub. Wish I could be a fly on that particular wall! We shall be shutting up shop during the Christmas holidays and wishing our riders well. I hope my readers have a happy and blessed time, thank you for reading ‘me’ and thank you to the kind editors who make my blog possible. Happy Christmas!!! SKy Watch

Super Moon / Micro-Moon Sun 5th Dec Rise 07.48, Set 15.46. 15th Dec Rise 07.58, Set 15.44. 30th Dec Rise 08.05, Set 15.53. Moon Full 3rd Dec; New 18th Dec. The Planets Mars: Resides in Virgo until the 22nd, when it then moves into Libra. A waning crescent Moon is close by on the 13th in the pre-dawn sky. Jupiter: Is located also in the pre-dawn sky, and shines at an impressive magnitude of -1.7, making it easy to locate. Should you need help, the Moon is close by on the morning of the 13th. Firstly, I’d like to start by announcing that on November 7th, the Minor Planet Center (American spelling) has officially been designated and named in my honour a main belt asteroid. The asteroid is some 2.6 km in diameter and weighs around 10 billion tonnes, so quite a chunky fella. Thank you to Matt Dawson for making this happen for me. Super Moon / Micro-Moon From time to time, you will see on social media sites and even the main news that a particular month will see a 'Super Moon' in it, but what is this phenomenon? Firstly, a 'Super Moon is NOT an astronomical term. It was a phrase coined by the American astrologer, Richard Nicolle in 1979, and astronomers will not use this term, and I, for one, absolutely detest it; but the public wish to know if there is any drastic significance to this type of event. We must start by investigating the circumstances involved to create this event. A Super Moon and Micro-Moon occur when the Moon is either at Full phase or New phase and is defined thus; Super Moon: A Full or New Moon that occurs when the centre of the Moon is less than 223,694 miles from the centre of the Earth. Micro-Moon: A Full or New Moon that takes place when the centre of the Moon is farther than 251,655 miles from the Centre of the Earth.

This differential in distance is caused by the Moon's orbit being elliptical, when at its closest to Earth at full phase we see a super moon and at its farthest away from Earth at full phase we see the micro-moon. Though this could sound alarming, these phenomena will not cause any volcanic eruption or tidal surge, you will just literally notice that the Moon looks a tad larger or smaller than is usual. Future Super Moons are as follows; Sunday 3rd December 2017; Tuesday 2nd January 2018; Monday 21st January 2019; Tuesday 19th February 2019. That just leaves it for me to thank Kelvin Avis for his continued support of this article and to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year . Suffolk Rockets Netball Club Another busy month at Suffolk Rockets NC. Our Youth Girls started their competitive season in the Colchester Youth League, we have entered two year 7 teams 'Cosmic Rockets' and 'Saturn Rockets'. They have both played 2 matches winning one and losing one, a great start with some lovely netball being displayed, the girls are really enjoying it and don't stop smiling when they play - a real credit to the Club! Each game the other team choose a 'Player of the Match' from our teams and so far both Lily and Charlotte have won it each week for their teams, at the end of the season the player who got the most votes from Players POM and Coaches POM will win a prize at our Club Presentation Event. Congratulations to Heidi, one of our year 7 girls, who has been selected into the Suffolk Netball Development Academy, which is part of the England Netball Performance Pathway for talented netball players. We are very proud of Heidi and we know this is just the start of her Netball journey. The Back to Netball ladies continue to thrive and improve each week at training, I am so impressed that numbers are still reaching 17-18 each week, even with the weather turning rather chilly! We have been busy organising Suffolk Rockets first B2N tournament which is on 25th November 10am - 1pm at Hadleigh High School, we have 5 teams entered including 2 of our own teams. Anyone is welcome to come along and watch especially if you are thinking of getting back into netball, come along and meet the players and coaches. Our aim to support ladies to become coaches or umpires continues, Luciana and Kaileigh, our Beginner Umpires, recently attended the 'Into Officiating' course in Colchester, this course is the first stage of their umpiring journeys and now they are able to umpire youth league games and B2N games. Both will be umpiring at our B2N festival. Well done to you both for taking the next step. If you would like more information about the club please contact Hayley Greenhill, Head Coach suffolkrocketsnc@hotmail.com FB & Twitter Suffolk Rockets NC.

Panto is just around the corner... Yes it’s December and time to decorate the house ready for Christmas. As the day gets nearer so does HADS next panto Snow White and the Six Dwarfs. Set in and around Hadleigh, The King of Hadleigh is having a party for her daughters 18th birthday party. After a visit from an old friend Snow White is all of a flutter and so is her dad. Snow Whites nanny is always there to help our poor maiden as they get set to go on an adventure and get themselves in some sticky situations which they seem to get in to A LOT. The show would not be complete with out the dwarfs of course and after Snow White meets them she knows she had taken on too much. I caught up with the dwarfs and asked them what they thought about Snow White and her nanny. "She’s wonderful, she’s been cooking our meals and cleaning the house..oh can I take a selfie please Mr.......". I have also visited the King up castle road who said "I'm so proud of my daughter Snow White, its her 18th birthday in January next year and we must celebrate with a party which i’ll be sending invites out soon. I must also find a new lady to look after me, I miss my wife god rest her soul.." The panto is written and directed by Chairman Trev Clarke and co directed by Russ Allen and will take you on a trip of laughs, dance and music. With a cast of over 20 people its time to buy your tickets to come see it. Tickets are now on sale at Keith Avis newsagents at £7 per adult and £5 for under 15 years old. Show dates are 25th, 26th & 27th January 2018 all starting at 7:30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2pm doors open half hour before the show. The cast and crew have been very hard at work on this show and we would like to thank our sponsors this year of the show Hadleigh Castings, Hadleigh Thrift shop, Catalyst Charitable Trust not forgetting Keith Avis who are always very kind and helpful with our shows. John Wheatley, Alan Line, Elaine Davidson and Max Toombs In November of each year the Captains at Stoke by Nayland finish their year in charge and the new Captains are elected. The Senior Section was the first one to hold its AGM and this is followed by their drive in, one week later. Norman Davidson, the retiring captain, handed over the reins to John Wheatley as Seniors Captain and Ian Bickers as Vice Captain. It had been a very successful year for Norman, and the Senior members, which included a full programme of inter club matches, monthly competitions as well as summer and winter knock outs. All prize winners were presented with their trophies at the AGM. Multiple winner Graham Vandervord crowned his day with a Hole in One on the 3rd Gainsborough in the Three Captains competition. Norman also announced that he had reached his target of £5000 for his charity which was the Kingswode Hoe School in Colchester. This money will be put towards the school’s science room project. At the Junior AGM it was confirmed Matthew Thompson will be succeeded by Max Toombs as Captain with Harry English his Vice Captain. Again trophies were presented to all the competition winners. At the Club AGM it was announced that the long serving Jonathan Loshak would be retiring from his post as Honorary President and he was presented with a memento by Club Captain Don Wiggins. He was thanked for all his hard work for the club over many years. Don reported on his own very successful year and the fact that he had surpassed his £4000 target raised for Prostate Cancer. Any funds over this target will be spent on the members in the form of coaching clinics. Don also presented all the trophies. A resolution was also passed to include the President in the club constitution and to create a Men’s Section. This was passed by the meeting and the Men will now hold their own AGM on the 8th December to elect their committee. The new Men’s Captain is Alan Line and his Vice Captain John Sandford. Lesley Garnett is the new President. The next morning saw all the Captains driving in after joining the members for breakfast. Both courses, Gainsborough and Constable, were used for the shotgun competition, with over 160 players taking part.

When David Hunter was Captain of Stoke by Nayland Golf Club in 1997 his charity was Guide Dogs for the Blind and for every year since the members have competed for the Hunter Guide Dog Trophy. The competition has a greensomes format. Twenty years later the members continue to support this worthy charity and over £100 was raised at the 2017 event. There was a very good entry, including David who played with the Ladies Vice Captain Richard Cross, David Hunter, Elaine Davidson. The winners Mandy Byham and Don Wiggins of the trophy, with 40 points, were Richard Cross and Mandy Byham just one point ahead of the runners up Michael Isom and Roz Clements. The trophy was presented by David Hunter and the Club Captain Don Wiggins. Results: 1st Richard Cross and Mandy Byham 40 points; 2nd Michael Isom and Roz Clements 39 points; 3rd Richard Allen and Fiz Grundy 38 points; Best Front Nine: Colin Pottle and Jill Pottle; Best Back Nine: Del Pritchard and Jo Little.

COOPER & KELLING Geoff Challacombe, Alan Vince, Andy Dodds and Ken Mazdon Awards representing 80 years’ service as trustees were presented when Newton Green Golf Club celebrated its successes over the last year. Four trustees, Ken Mazdon, Alan Vince, Geoff Challacombe and Andy Dodds have relinquished their positions as the members’ club has moved to incorporated status. Directors now take over the responsibilities of the trustees, and chairman Peter Philpott presented inscribed glass bowls to the long-serving trustees. In reviewing the year, he said: “Newton Green is in a very strong position, both in respect to its playing standards and facilities. In recent times the club has invested heavily in the course, which has resulted in a significant increase in visitors. “On top of this, the last few months have seen us ploughing in around £90,000 to completely refurbish the bar and dining areas, as well as transforming the road network with block paving, landscaping and re-organising parking arrangements”. The evening of celebration also included marking the juniors becoming Suffolk team champions for the third year, as well as winning the team award at the county junior stroke play final. They went on to finish sixth out of 30 teams in the national club final. Also during the year the women reached the final of the Suffolk Cranworth Trophy, while Ben Tawell won both the spring and autumn meetings of the East Anglia Golf Managers’ Association, which meant he also retained the organisation’s Dick Burn Trophy.

21 HARWOOD PLACE, LAVENHAM, SUDBURY, SUFFOLK CO10 9SG

Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club We hope to complete our In-House competitions this month, with just the Singles to be played over the next few weeks. Well done to everyone who entered the Mixed Pairs and the Doubles. The final of the Doubles was two ladies versus two guys. It was a close game with it being 6 – 6 by the 6th end, but the guys were victorious in the end by one point, won by Martin Wheal and Will Durrant. Second win for Martin, well done, and we will see if he can 'do the triple' after the Singles has been played. We are getting great attendance at our Tuesday morning session, which takes place at 10am at Lavenham Village Hall, the session runs until 12.30. but you are welcome to come along for a shorter period if you just want to see if you would like to find out if you would enjoy Carpet Bowls. We would love to welcome more people to our evening session on Thursdays from 7.30 until 10pm. Carpet Bowls is great for every age group, as it is a game of skill, so if you would like to try a new activity after work, we would love to see you. But we do play matches on some Thursdays so please give us a call to check before you come. The first two sessions are free to see if Carpet Bowls is for you. We will be closed over Christmas and New Year from Tuesday 19 December, when we will be going out for the Christmas lunch, where we hope to present the competition trophies, so no bowls that morning, until Tuesday 2 January 2018. If you need any further information about Carpet Bowls or to check if we are at the Village Hall on a particular Thursday evening please call Marilyn and Jon Beatham on 01787 247805.
