Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan Regulation 14 Consultation Hadleigh Town Council, officers and volunteers have worked to bring together the Neighbourhood Plan which is based on community-led aspirations for the town for the next 15 years and your views and comments are important. The plan defines local policies to help influence and guide development in the parish and once integrated will become a statutory consideration in all District Council planning decisions that affect the parish of Hadleigh. The policies have been based on findings from surveys, advice from specialist consultants and work undertaken by the volunteer group. The consultation is open between Monday 6th November and Sunday 17th December 2023. There will be an open drop-in session on Wednesday 19th November 2023 in the Guildroom at The Guildhall between midday and 2pm or between 5pm and 7pm where the Neighbourhood Plan volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and note down your feedback. Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) To date over 2,515 covid and 1,912 ‘flu jabs a have been given to the 65 plus cohort in Hadleigh including those in our five local care homes. The Health Centre fulfilled the target, set by NHS England, to have all eligible patients vaccinated by the end of October. This has been a considerable challenge for all involved not least for patients themselves. Thanks to their stoical resolve and the Practice’s noble efforts, a record number of vaccinations were given at each of the three Saturday clinics and some Wednesday afternoon sessions. The ‘no show’ patients of past years have always been 20 to 30%. This was not the case this year. This, plus the lack of alternative NHS venues and patients concerns about the new strain of Covid, made the first clinic exceptionally busy. Extending the hours of the clinics and increasing the number of vaccinators helped cope with the extra uptake at the subsequent vac sessions. As ever, the team of volunteers did their best to support Jenny Howarth the public and the clinicians both inside and outside minds Elvis the Health Centre. This even extended to doggy minding (see photo). Happily, the majority of patients were understanding and appreciated their efforts in difficult circumstances but, sadly, there were some who saw fit to abuse the volunteers. Pleased to report two new members have joined the Practice. A warm welcome to GP, Dr Laura Cattermole who started in October and Physiotherapist, Matt Coombes. Matt has additional qualifications which will enable patients to make him their first port of call for musculoskeletal conditions. Online appointments are posted on the Practice website each morning between 6a.m and 7a.m. If you wish to take advantage of this method of booking one of the Receptionists will give you the necessary information. There is a new kid on the block ‘Our Future Health’ seeking your personal details for their mega-national database. This will form the basis of their extensive research into the current and future health of the nation. The NHS appears to have some affiliation to the initiative but are not running it. Blood Donors are being encouraged to take part. Fortunately, you only participate if you sign one of their extensive consent forms giving you time to look carefully into the scheme. The following quote is the response I received when I asked for more information. “Our Future Health is a collaboration between the public, charity and private sectors. We have initial funding from the UK Government. As we welcomed in the Autumn, we have been very busy here at the nursery. We have really enjoyed our topic of all things related to vehicles - for you small world we enjoyed trains, buses, diggers, planes, and all things space. We even made our own bus out of large cardboard boxes, the children used role play to be mechanics and builders whilst putting this together. We also looked at all books which were related to vehicles. The children certainly enjoyed the interactive books and showing us their impressions of different types of transport. Now we have changed season into autumn, we are preparing to explore more about this change, the leaves changing colour, the tree losing their leaves. We are hoping to get outside for some walks to have a look around and see what we can see changing. We are also planting some bulbs in preparation for springtime. We now have our pop-up shop running for our special activity bags, these can be purchase at PlayStation. These come in two ages, pre school age and our 5+ bags. Pre school bag includes: autumn scavenger hunt sheet, play dough, colouring sheets and pencils, fir cone craft and a hedgehog template. 5+ bags include: autumn scavenger hunt sheet, activity book, colouring sheets and pencils, fir cone craft, and a autumn walk challenge and template. Pips, Natterers and Serotines You may have spotted some people behaving rather oddly this summer – standing looking up at the trees in semi darkness, with noisy clicks coming from handheld bits of kit. Never fear, it was just Hadleigh Bat Group looking for bats. Now that the season for bat watching has come to an end we can report on the results of our survey which was the first for many years.Firstly, a big thank you to all of you who told us where we could see bats and opened up your gardens to us. We had over 30 sightings to follow up, most of which we covered in our evening bat walks and visits. As you can imagine bats are very difficult to identify by eye and we relied on listening to the frequency of their echo-location i.e. clicks picked up on our bat detectors, plus help from software to differentiate between the species. We are very pleased to have identified 8 species of bats in and around Hadleigh, all with lovely names. The Common Pipistrelle, Soprano Pipistrelle, Brown Long-eared Bat, Natterer's, Daubenton's, Barbastelle, Noctule and Serotine. There are 17 bat species breeding in Britain and bat populations are falling due to loss of habitat, food, roosts and pollution so local surveys are important. We are contributing to national and local bat databases. The best sightings were places rich in evening and night flying insects and moths by water and on the edge of woodland. Our ‘bat hot spots’ were Toppesfield Bridge and Wolves Wood where we found 7 - 8 species. We only found one maternity roost but didn’t manage to survey all the possible sites. The message to all of us is to look after our river and reserves, especially the area around Toppesfield Bridge and Wolves Wood. Bats are one part of the chain of life needing an abundance of flying insects and moths that live in natural habitats such as hedgerows, woodlands, rivers and ponds. Habitat loss, new developments, pesticides and climate change are serious threats to bats. There is still plenty more to discover and we are preparing for next year’s survey and thanks to The Thrift Shop and Councillor Dowling, we can buy better detection equipment. We will also be improving our skills and locating additional places to survey. Remembrance 2023 The RBL Branch will observe a short act of remembrance to mark the 1918 Armistice at the mile stone on the High Street on Sat 11 Nov 23 at 11:00hrs. This year Remembrance Sunday Parade & Church Service will take place on Sun 12 Nov 23. The parade will step off from the RBL on George Street at 14:00hrs for a short wreath laying ceremony at the war memorial. This will be followed by a church service in St Mary’s at 15:00hrs.

Open Morning Success for small Church of England Village School Nestled in the heart of the idyllic Suffolk countryside is Whatfield Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School. A small community school with the capacity to have 56 pupils on roll. The school dates back to 1857 and since then has been a central part to village life. A Christian ethos permeates the school and are proud to have strong community and church links. Over the summer holidays the school took on some extensive improvements to further enhance the learning environments, both internally and externally. On Saturday 23 September the school opened its doors to the local community to celebrate the school and its recent improvements. Mrs Shaw – Executive Headteacher said “It was fabulous to see so many people from the local community, prospective parents, existing parents, children and governors coming to take a tour of our setting. We were very fortunate to have the official opening of our newly enhanced early years outdoor area blessed by Bishop Graeme Knowles and officially opened by businessman Mr James Buckle who without his kind donation the improvements wouldn't have been possible. We are also extremely thankful for the support of our fabulous PTFA Friends of Whatfield School - FOWS who have tirelessly raised funds to allow us to have fantastic new playground markings”. The Cock Inn Articles for this publication are written during the preceding month, normally mid-way through. As I write now in mid-October we have already witnessed the first frost of the coming winter, so its certainly autumn. There’s still a chance to grab some outdoor relaxation in our garden on a crisp afternoon me thinks! Thanks to everyone who supported our Cocktoberfest beer festival. It was a huge success and a great celebration of Suffolk brewed cask ales and ciders. Customers were entertained by a number of Suffolk based musicians including All Revved Up, The Bear Witch Project, Max Wildwood and Jax Deacon. We even had an outdoor bar-b-que to keep the hunger at bay. Local brewers included of course Greene King, Earl Soham, Mr Bees, Cabin, Mauldons, Nethergates and ciders supplied by the Bernard Cider Co. The county of Suffolk has a long and famous history within brewing, partly as the landscape and soil was and is ideal for growing the crops that are required to brew ales, being mainly barley and hops. In the late 1980’s there were over 70 breweries in Suffolk, though that included some small brew pubs too. Today the number stands at 41 and again includes a few brew pubs and very small micro breweries producing craft rather than cask ales. Greene King is obviously the largest and one of the UK’s largest brewers of cask ales owning brands and breweries such as Morlands, Hardy Hanson and even Scottish brewer Belhaven. Earl Soham brewery is quite near to Hadleigh and they brew some wonderful ales. They brew an annual ale called Deben Hop. The barley is grown on the fields next to the river Deben and it produces a wonderful golden coloured ale. Its absolutely delicious and available now at The Cock probably until early November I guess. Hurry down if you want to sample a pint or two. Its normally rationed. Haha. The rugby World Cup is well underway and as I predicted South Africa are still there waiting to meet England in the semi-final. The All Blacks, who started the world cup in dreadful form will play Argentina, both teams who came to France underperforming. Tournament favourites and No1 seeds Ireland again went out in the quarter final, as did Wales. While I predicted a South Africa final win I think they will play New Zealand in the final and just lose out. Lets see, by the time we read this publication it will all be over. On the footy front England have qualified for Euro 24 by beating Italy 3-1 and Scotland are through too, compliments of Spain beating Norway. Wales’ epic win over Croatia gives them some hope, but still a stretch. There are lots of Champions League and Europa League matches throughout November with Man Utd & City, Arsenal and Newcastle playing group matches. Liverpool and West Ham along with Brighton have Europa League group games too. Aston Villa are still in the Europa Conference as our only representative. Good luck all and if you want to watch these matches please join us. We show all televised European and Premier League games. If Ipswich are on Sky they are on at The Cock too. Spurs are leading the PL with Arsenal in second place. Who would have predicted that? It’s early days and Man City are third. Their recent losses against Wolves and Arsenal illustrate how competitive this league is. I think we will all have a better picture come Christmas Day. My money is still on Man City to sneak it again. Motor racing fans have three F1 Grand Prix’s to whet their appetite with the Brazilian GP on the 5th November with a start time of 5pm here, the Las Vegas GP on the 18th though it’s at 6am, and the last race of 2023, the Abu Dhabi GP at 1pm on the 26th November. Not much to race for, some may say, with Verstappen way ahead of team mate Perez and Hamilton back in third. Same too with team Red Bull, way ahead of Mercedes with Ferrari in third spot. Two-wheel racing fans have three MotoGP’s to ponder in November; Malaysia, Qatar and Valencia. Check our Facebook pages for times and events. Finally, we have another great month of live music. Those that saw local Hadleigh band The Pangs in October will be happy to know they will be back again next year. Playing a fusion of funk and rock, Phil Wolfe Flanagan, Andy Pipe, Nick Ainsley and Graham Garnham really set the place alight. Wonderful. Three Sunday Soirees will see Adam Harrod, Words & Music and 3 Steps to Heaven all appearing once again and Saturday night band night sees The Blaggers and The Kicks both gigging at The Cock. Citizens Advice Column With Black Friday fast approaching and Christmas just around the corner it’s important to know your rights when shopping and having the confidence to know what to do if things go wrong. As we focus on counting the pennies, unscrupulous sellers turn to high pressure tactics or misleading promises to make a sale. Coming away with more or less than you bargained for can happen to anyone even the savviest shoppers. Citizens Advice Sudbury & District is sharing its top tips to empower shoppers with the knowledge to shop confidently. 1. Does it seem too good to be true? If it seems too good to be true — it probably is. This is especially true for products which are ‘must-haves’ or are sold out in major retailers. Be wary of sites offering big discounts and ensure that you’re buying from the retailer’s official website so that you know it’s a genuine product. You can find out if a company is registered by searching their details on gov.uk. Sole traders (someone who runs their own business) and partnerships (where two or more people run a business together) don’t need to register with gov.uk, so you’ll need to do further research on their site to make sure they’re a genuine seller 2. Check you’re buying from a trustworthy retailer. Do some background research into the company. Start with an internet search about the retailer and have a look at their official website. Make sure you find their return and refund policies so you can understand your rights if something goes wrong with your purchase. Find out how they can be contacted, where in the world they’re based and whether they’re part of a consumer protection scheme. Seeing what others say about the retailer can help you find out if it’s a legitimate seller or not. But remember to look into reviews on other websites too, not just their official website. 3. How do they want you to pay? Be cautious when a seller asks you to pay by an unusual means such as in iTunes vouchers, crypto currency or via bank transfer. These are harder to track and lack the vital protections that you get when paying by debit or with credit card or by a third-party app such as PayPal. Whichever way you pay, make sure you check the terms and conditions to understand what you’re paying for. 4. If something you ordered hasn't arrived If you bought something from a business to be delivered, it’s the seller’s responsibility to make sure the item is delivered to you. If the seller used a courier, they should chase the courier to find out what’s happened to your order - it’s not your responsibility. Check the delivery address you gave the seller. Then contact them and ask where your order is. If the seller claims they've delivered it or don't know where it is, you can ask for a redelivery. You might be able to get a refund in some circumstances. There’s always something for everyone in the library and as we welcome in Autumn, the team have been busy creating colourful autumn book displays and artwork for the children’s area. During half term we saw lots of creativity as children joined in with an animal themed craft session. We continue to add new ideas to the library and most recently it's the arrival of some educational puzzles and games. These can be borrowed for a week at a time with a library card, and you will find them on the shelves in the children's library. Soon we will be introducing a toy library. We currently have a small selection of toys and puzzles, but do you have any toys that are no longer needed, in good condition and need a new home? Please speak to a member of staff if you have something you would like to donate. Country Threads Create For Christmas Members of the Country Thread Group have already started making hand crafted items for Christmas. They need to work swiftly as the St Elizabeth Hospice Shop in Ipswich is relying on their attractive contributions to stock their shop in time for the early bird seasonal shoppers. Last year their merchandise just flew off the shelves and within a week the shop needed restocking. To be sure the customers keep on coming, the ladies ring the changes with different, colourful decorations every year. 2023 is no exception; with bright flower garlands cleverly created from recycled material and free standing ‘felting’ Christmas trees amongst their unique Christmas collection. Their small, circular, brightly coloured clay tree decorations and gift tags are also bound to be a hit as they are so unusual. Happily, inside the Heath Road shop, it is possible to combine your retail therapy and relax with a delicious cup of coffee and some tempting home-made naughties. Where did he go? Hello Readers, especially the motorists who travel along Clay Lane between Raydon Coal Yard and Pond Hall workplaces in the mornings. Hello also to the 6am walkers, dog walkers, cyclists, and runners (especially Stuart) along the Railway Walk. Greetings also to Pam and friends who await their newspapers at Keith Avis on a Saturday morning. Finally, greetings to my friends at Hadleigh library and Hadleigh swimming pool. The cheery man with the fluorescent jacket can no longer wave from his little white bike as unfortunately he was involved in a road accident on the 2nd of August. I have now returned from Addenbrookes hospital, after spending five weeks there, and am now in Ipswich hospital where I will continue my rehabilitation. I hope to see you all again one day soon. Hadleigh Art Club We meet from 1:30 until 4:00 pm on Tuesday afternoons in the Seminar Room above the Library. For those who ask, we try to give advice, guidance and constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We all do art because we enjoy it, not necessarily because we are good at it, we all have pieces that turn out well and others that don't, so please don't worry about your ability, just come along and join in, we're a friendly group. We charge £2 per session to the cover cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5 and are due each May. We have a list of suggested topics each week for anyone who wants ideas on what to do. Some people will be working on one of the topics while others will be working on their own subject. CLUB NEWS: Christmas float repairs have begun. WOULD YOU LIKE TO SPONSOR A REINDEER? The two reindeers from the float have disappeared and Rotarians are in the process of rounding up and training two new ones in time for Christmas. Additional renovations will also take place including a new Christmas tree, some new lighting, replacement of some of the woodwork and a full repaint. If you would like to be involved in maintaining this much loved Hadleigh tradition the Club is seeking sponsors to help with costs. Each sponsor will have their name or business name on the float. Suggested sponsorship as follows: A Reindeer £150 • Christmas Tree £60 • Lights £50 • Paint etc £25£50. The remaining money from the Christmas collection 2022 has been used for donations of £250 each to East Anglian Air ambulance and Surviving Winter in Hadleigh. The latter organisation is a small local charity helping people in Hadleigh and district who are struggling to meet fuel bills and other essential costs due to the high cost of living. The routes for this years collections will be published next month, with the House to House starting on 14 December. ROTARY AROUND THE WORLD. Arguably Rotary’s number one international project is POLIO PLUS- the complete eradication of Polio worldwide. This goal has never been closer with only 7 wild polio cases this year in 2 countries – Afghanistan and Pakistan. Vaccination continues in both those countries and in many others overseen by the World Health Organisation to ensure the safety of future generations. Clubs everywhere continue their fundraising programmes with the Bill Gates foundation doubling every donation and this will continue until every country has a regular vaccination programme of their own. So many disasters of one sort and another seem to be happening at the moment but rest assured that wherever they happens there are Rotary Clubs nearby who provide help on the ground and ensure that all monies donated through Rotary are used for immediate aid. Progress at Brett Galley The last time we contributed to the Community News magazines, we gave an insight into life at the Gallery following the Winter period and our changes to some of the exhibitors. We entered Easter having introduced several new artists and makers. These included a guest potter from near the North Kent marshes, with her beautiful, nature-inspired ceramics. Adding to our portfolio were a stunning photographer, two artists, one using linocut, the other focussing on the declining Suffolk Punch Horse. Two additional silversmiths also joined us. We have maintained some 50 contributors from East Anglia, still limiting any external candidates to one guest per genre. As well as fulfilling orders, we regularly meet all patrons to ensure that stock is refreshed, minimising any suggestion of stagnation. Exhibits are regularly moved around so that work can be viewed from different perspectives. We are active on Social Media and daily maintain our website, with its live shop. The summer, despite its unpredictable weather, has seen many tourists explore what we offer and we have noticed that customers are coming from even further afield within East Anglia. We often post exhibits across the UK and even shipped a ceramic Hare to Australia for someone who had limited luggage space but wanted something quite unique from our region. We have been pleased to see many new faces and are most grateful to those who regularly shop with us whether for that anniversary, birthday, special occasion or indeed preparing for Christmas. Some simply want to treat themselves! We continue to strive to provide good quality, affordable art supporting local talent, with East Anglia having many that fit that description. There is a distinct wildlife and natural theme. All exhibits are displayed in a spacious, calming environment offering somewhere to escape and immerse oneself in other worlds. The meeting will not be online. The public may attend but will be unable to speak unless pre-registered with BDC and approved to do so. New Officers have now visited Magdalen Road car park and agree that, as a first impression of Hadleigh, it is appalling. They have agreed to action remedial works. Extra EV charging points and disabled bays will be created in Maiden Way car park. Jan will be meeting with Matt Smith, the Officer in charge of car parks at BDC, to discuss Toppesfield car park and the one way system. A bench, funded and organised by HTC, has been placed at the end of Magdalen Road to commemorate to Coronation 4.4 HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) A report was given to the meeting and can be found in the PPG column in each month’s Hadleigh Community News. 4.5 ST MARYS CHURCH Refurbishment of the vestry is rolling along with new plasterwork expected this week. We plan to have an open day on 15 December for everyone to come and see the refurbishment work: full details will be given in the December issue of HCN. The church’s CCTV has now been fully upgraded. It is still on track to proceed with the chandeliers for heat and light. UK Power Networks have given pricing and work on trenching across the churchyard is now being looked into. The full cost of the project will come in at around £110-£120k. The church, such an important and iconic part of Hadleigh, will have to go out to the whole community to raise funds to cover these much-needed improvements as well as underlying vital repairs to Hadleigh’s church. No one wants to imagine Hadleigh without a church but that is what may well happen without these, and other, works being carried out, if we cannot raise the funding needed. The John Bloomfield Memorial Lecture on the ancient trades of stonemasonry and lead work, with particular reference to work carried out on St Mary’s, was a great success. Sat 21 October 7pm for 7.30pm with a welcome drink. Last Night of the Proms concert in St Mary’s with the Hadleigh Orchestra and singers. Tickets £15 from Avis, The Little Ginger Bee in the High Street or Jim Wilding. Our new Administrator, Emma Fleming-Ovens, has settled in seamlessly and the office is open to the public on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am–12 noon. 4.6 HEAT (HADLEIGH ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION TEAM) There is a meeting on 26 October at 7pm in the Leisure Centre with the warden of Wolves Wood, Shirley Sampson, speaking. The first Climate Café, open to all to come an discuss environmental matters over a cuppa, is at 2.30pm, also on 26 October, upstairs in Cobblers. HEATs first AGM will take place on 28 November. The main topic for discussion will be HEAT becoming a Community Interest Company. Currently planned to be held in the Ansell Centre, but may need larger premises. 18-20 sites identified for bat sightings in the first survey since the 1970’s. Bat boxes, made by the Mens Shed, are being put up around town and in surrounding farms. 4.7 COST OF LIVING CONCERNS Term time Pop-Up events at St Mary’s are on every second and fourth Wednesday from 2pm – 5.30pm offering free food and drink and activities for all ages. 4.8 BENTON END The BBC visited to film an episode of Escape to the Country which should air in December or January. The National Lottery Heritage Funding application should be going in shortly with an expected response in December as to whether they will accept our Expression of Interest. There is an exhibition of Lucy Harwood’s work at Firstsite in Colchester from Dec 23 to April 24. The Field Studies Council at Flatford and Benton End are planning to collaborate to offer students a day, or a half day, at Benton End as part of their painting courses. The Coach House opposite the main house needs a facelift and it is hoped to be able to use this as a holiday let to generate some income towards the project. Grateful thanks are offered to the HEAT volunteers who have made great inroads with garden clearance. It is still hoped to have a winter gathering but currently (sadly) the cooker is broken ! 5 ACL’S SOCIAL IMPACT VIDEO Jon was able to show the most interesting and informative social impact video. 6 A O B Following Jan’s question, Wendy reported that there is a working group looking at zebra crossings on the High Street. Sports - Our U11’s Boys attended a Football Festival in Ipswich as part of the School Games scheme. They played a number of games, they won one, lost some and drew a few but most importantly they had a good time. Our U9’s took part in the Hadleigh Pyramid Schools Cross Country event. All the children did their best. We are pleased to report one pupil came 1st, our girls came 2nd and the boys came 4th overall. Harvest Festival - The children read prayers and poems, then we all joined together to sing songs for Harvest at St Peter’s Church, Elmsett Donations were collected for FIND Ipswich, who support families in need. Song for Christmas - Our choir joined with other schools from the DMAT at St Matthew’s Church in Ipswich to record the song, Children of the World. This song was especially written for The Trust. This was a wonderful experience for the children. Coffee Morning - We hosted our MacMillian Coffee Morning with the support of Friends of Elmsett School. Parents, family and the wider community came along to enjoy coffee/tea, cake and a catch up. We are thrilled to report we raised £335 to support this worthy charity. Eco School Green Flag Award - We are pleased to report that we have completed the 7 steps required to receive our Eco-Schools Green Flag. We had to demonstrate and evidence how we delivered eco-projects to make our school more sustainable, increase environmental learning and activities to benefit our local community. Well done to our Eco Council who came up with initiatives to achieve this award. In recognition of this Butterbear from The Buttermarket Shopping Centre in Ipswich came to visit the school children. The Centre actively work to help the environment with zero waste into landfill. Butterbear gave all the children a water recycled bottle.

Hadleigh Nursing Home staff were invited to a family fun day at Hadleigh Cricket Club organised by Kingsley Healthcare to say thank you for all the staff members’ hard work. During the fun day the cricket management team kindly came to our event and spent time showing our children how to play Kwik Cricket outside on the field. The children spent most of the sunny afternoon enjoying the cricket and other garden games that were available. Inside the cricket club, which is sponsored by Kingsley Healthcare, staff and their families enjoyed a lovely savoury and sweet buffet. There were facepaints and various table games and arts and crafts for the families to enjoy time together to play. Music played in the back ground and many family members enjoyed dancing on the dance floor area. Nursing home staff would like to say a huge thank you to Kingsley Healthcare, Hadleigh Cricket Club and dpl caterers for such an amazing day.
Hadleigh Old School presents A Festive Comedy Caper Hadleigh Old School, the arts and entertainment venue, at 3-5 Bridge Street Hadleigh IP7 6BY will be hosting the Common Ground Theatre Company’s Christmas Show and booking is now open. ‘Miss Mimple Meets The Ice Wolf’ by Pat Whymark is an hilarious comedy caper performed by a group of players who clearly enjoy what they do. Renowned amateur sleuth and part-time dog trainer Miss Jean Mimple is on a hiking tour of the Italian Alps, sightseeing and collecting the odd alpine to take back to her garden in St Mary Mirkin. In a remote hostelry, she meets Dr Bridges, assistant to the mysterious Professor Ramekin, who lives in nearby Castle Pandoro. The body of one of the servants at the Castle has been found torn into fettuccine, and Dr Bridges invites Miss Mimple to help with the investigation. The locals at the inn warn her of The Ice Wolf, or "Bestia Gelato" - half man, half wolf, half frozen dessert - which has terrorised the region for several months. Undeterred, the plucky Miss Mimple sets off to investigate. Could the terrifying Ice Wolf be linked to Professor Ramekin's experiments? (Spoiler: Of course it is!) Will Miss Mimple ever return to sleepy St Mary Mirkin, and will the odd alpine be happy there or will he miss his Italian roots. Hadleigh Shed at Shedfest 23 In recent years Men’s Sheds have been popping up all over the place. While they are still relatively low in numbers, you do not have to travel too far to find one. Sheds exist in Ipswich, Sudbury, Long Melford, Stowmarket and many other towns across Suffolk. We are fortunate here in the county to have support organisations like Community Action Suffolk (CAS) who support a wide range of community groups and organisations to enable them to operate more effectively. In late September CAS organised Shedfest 23, a conference for Men’s Shed groups from across the county. The conference which was held near Eye and very well attended, included; guess speakers, practical workshops and an excellent opportunity for some shed to shed networking. It was interesting to meet other sheds and hear how they are all developing. In addition to sending four delegates to the conference, Hadleigh Men’s Shed also led one of the workshops. Chairman Mark Brennan gave a presentation on how Hadleigh’s Shed has adopted a set of locally produced Standard Operating Procedures which cover everything from induction training to safe use of tools and equipment. Using this set of procedures has greatly helped the Hadleigh shed to quickly establish itself, build a solid membership base and grow in confidence. This particular workshop went down very well with the other delegates who were all keen to learn more and get a copy of Hadleigh’s procedures. With the 2023 conference now complete we are back at the shed four times a week, two day time sessions and two evening sessions. Hadleigh Society Dr Kate Jewell, an expert in medieval life, will be giving a talk: Minstrels and Mayhem; Professional Entertainers in Medieval Suffolk, to the Hadleigh Society on 6th December. A huge variety of people made their livings providing entertainment during the medieval period, including singing, dancing, acting, acrobatics, storytelling and puppetry. Using records from a 13th century royal wedding feast in Ipswich and other documents she will explore who these entertainers were and what type of diversions they could provide. Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Report SCC forecasting an £22.3m overspend to its £688.1m budget for this year - Suffolk’s budget has been hit by unforecastable costs, but this is a similar story for many councils across the country which has resulted from a higher demand for their services, inflation, and high interest rates. This will be a key issue for the leading Conservative Group when we sit to decide the budget for FY 2024/25 next month. No doubt, I will once again stand firm and oppose any suggestion that we should lose our Household Waste Recycling Centre as I have previously. Details of the main areas of overspend are: School transport - £11.4m (39% of the overspend), with £8.3m of this being travel costs for children with special education needs and disabilities (SEND). Children in care - £8.2m (28% of the overspend). There is currently an unexpectedly higher number of children requiring this support, with this costing an average of £22,700 per week, per child. Adult care services - £3.5m (12% of the overspend) for purchasing care, due to increases in demand, and staffing costs in the sector. The fees paid remain high with 64% of new residential and nursing packages being above the published rate of £806 per week, with some specialist packages being over £1,500 per week. Inflation and Interest - have led to an estimated £3.0m (10% of the overspend) pressure as pay settlements continue to be above historical norms. High interest rates mean it has been more costly than anticipated to borrow money, which the council does to help fund big capital projects. In addition to the net overspend of £22.3m from this main budget, the council is forecasting an overspend of £15.8m against its £256.5m budget from the Dedicated Schools Grant and Pupil Premium Grant. This is money from Government specifically to fund schools and services for pupils. Recent research suggests that England’s largest councils will need to make at least £1bn in savings to balance their current 2023/24 budgets and that councils expect to be £5.2bn short of balancing budgets by April 2026 with the average council facing a £33m predicted deficit by 2025-26. Trading Standards seize 2,500 illegal vapes in Ipswich - Suffolk Trading Standards has seized more than 2,000 illegal vapes from a shop in Ipswich. Approximately 2,500 vapes were found in a storeroom when officers visited the premises following a successful test purchase of illegal tobacco. The seized vapes are illegal because they supply over the number of puffs allowed under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016. The regulations state that vapes should provide a maximum of 600 puffs, but these devices indicate between 3,500 puffs to up to more than 10,000. Investigations into the retailer continue. Statement following funding announcement for Ely and Haughley rail junctions - Last month, the Government announced funding for upgrades to Ely and Haughley rail junctions. This is excellent news for Suffolk as the current infrastructure at these junctions lacks capacity for the demand from freight and passenger traffic. This investment will reduce those constraints and allow more trains to run through Ely and Haughley, including freight on rail out of Felixstowe and more passenger services between Ipswich and Peterborough. It will ease congestion on our roads, help us on our journey towards net zero by reducing carbon emissions and provide a significant boost to the local economy. New highways multi-million-pound partnership - Suffolk Highways’ new partnership has launched, as Milestone Infrastructure and Suffolk County Council join forces to deliver highways services fit for the future. The new contract, which is worth in the region of £800 million - £1 billion, will deliver highway projects and improvements across Suffolk for up to 20 years, including maintaining roads, pavements and rights of way, improving drainage, hedge trimming, construction of new road schemes, snow-clearing and gritting and much more. Milestone Infrastructure, was awarded Suffolk’s new highways services contract back in February and since then has been working with Suffolk County Council to mobilise the new contract ahead of it commencing on 1st October. As highways services tend to impact all those living, working or travelling in our county; it was essential we found the best possible fit for what was needed here in Suffolk. Parish Council Below are the main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 27 September 2023. • District Council Cllr Ward was unable to attend; his report would be reviewed at the October meeting. It was noted that he was now Acting Leader of Babergh following Cllr Busby’s decision to step down temporarily due to ill health. • Suffolk County Council Cllr Hall was unable to attend; her report would be reviewed at the October meeting. It was noted that some work had been carried out along the footpath between Upper Layham and Hadleigh. • Maps showing location of defibrillators Cllr Curran had produced maps showing the location of the defibrillators in Layhamusing Paris; these would be put up on the noticeboards and added to the website; the locations would be publicised in the Hadleigh Community News. • Speeding It was agreed to put Community Speed Watch on hold for the time being. The ANPR trial had started in Upper Layham and the results were awaited. Speeding and traffic calming was due to be discussed with Suffolk CC during October. • Remembrance Day – Sunday 12 November It was agreed to purchase a wreath as usual. Cllr Roberts would check whether the War Memorial required cleaning. • Closure of Footpath 1 The Clerk was liaising with Suffolk CC over the closure of the bridge between Upper and Lower Layham – the bridge had been closed on 6 September but to date no work had started. She would update parishioners via the community email when she had any further information. • SALC Board The Clerk had been appointed to the SALC Board with immediate effect; she was also now Vice-Chair of the SALC/Babergh Forum. Social Club In October we enjoyed a fascinating and informative talk by local photographer Rosey Nicholls. Her brilliant photographs were much admired as we heard about Rosey’s enthusiasm for photographing East Anglian insects, flowers, butterflies and scenes. Rosey gave very useful tips about capturing crisp images based on her training and many years of experience. We were much inspired to pick up our cameras and observe Nature more closely in our own environments. TWAM (Tools with a Mission) Robert collected the generous donations of tools made by Layham residents and friends. We estimated that as well as 5 sewing machines we had about 300 tools to be distributed to communities in Zambia. The TWAM van being loaded. Containers on Lower Layham Green A large amount of litter was collected alongside the B1070 and the Gravel Pit Road; however, thanks to those of you who collect litter throughout the year, there were only small amounts of litter in most parts of the village. A big thank you to all our volunteers who helped on the day and throughout the year. Thanks also to Babergh DC for supporting our work by providing brown bins and removing our bags of rubbish. Voluntary Work in Zambia Dr Ian Gooding, a resident of Layham, recently gave up some of his time to work with a charity called the Nana Foundation to Zimba Mission Hospital, which is in southern Zambia. He treated patients and taught the medical students there. As an adult general physician he was on the two adult wards, working with a GP and a gynaecologist. He also helped with the delivery of supplies, arranged a blood donation session and attempted to deliver some long-term improvements to care processes at the hospital. The photo shows Ian Gooding with a group of healthcare professionals in Zambia The area is very poor. The roads are dust tracks and goods are moved by ox cart. Medical care was very basic, without many of the investigations and treatments that we regard as essential. It was an eye-opening and mindbroadening experience, which Ian very much enjoyed. He hopes the visit achieved some lasting benefit. Ladybirds Toddler Group We have extended our friendly Tuesday morning session for an extra half hour from 10am – 11.30am by popular request. £1 per family including refreshments. Toddlers are accompanied either by a parent or grandparent and we have space for 2 or 3 more toddlers to join us in Layham village hall. Hadleigh & District Flower Club At this month’s meeting the Club celebrated their 35th Anniversary. We began the evening with a glass of wine, then the cake was cut by our President, Sylvia Hobrough. This was followed by the AGM and a demonstration by Brenda Eyers. Brenda was a former member of the club so it was lovely to welcome her back. The title for the evening was “Second Time Around”, she had previously retired from demonstrating but had decided to return again and we much enjoyed her arrangements of beautiful flowers and foliage. The evening concluded with the members enjoying a slice of celebration cake and coffee. Our next meeting is our Christmas Open Meeting. This is being held at Copdock Village Hall on 14th. November at 7.30. Our demonstrator is Coral Gardiner and her title is “Country Christmas”, and we are sure we will be well entertained. A drink and refreshments will be served. Tickets for this are available from Jenny 01473 822971 and we look forward to seeing you. Since our meeting it is with great sadness that we report Joan Mariner, instigator, founder member and president of the club has sadly passed away. She had not enjoyed good health recently, but over the last 35 years had been a very active member so much enjoying flowers and friendship of the club. She will be sadly missed by all the members.

The meeting commenced with Maggie Miller the co-opted Chairperson announcing that sadly after much consideration Dave de Negri has retired from the position of Chairman but is still going to remain on the committee and organise the much enjoyed raffle. All Dave has done for the club is much appreciated by all. The Talk - was a “complete Guide to Clematis” given by Peter Skeggs-Gooch of Thorncroft Clematis a 12 time Chelsea Gold Medal winner. In the talk he included Clematis for Every Season, Planting & Care, Pruning and Feeding all of which was beautifully illustrated. This was an exceptionally informative talk enjoyed by all even the more experienced gardeners, as demonstrated by the number of questions asked all of which Peter keenly answered. Catalogues with illustrations of the various clematis and information were handed out to members which I expect will serve as useful reminders as there are care hints and tips in them too. Growing Tips – Plant clematis deep with a layer of organic mix at the bottom, feed with bonemeal raked into the top couple of inches (use sparingly at first) and sprinkle around Potash for good flowers. If the leaves are dull add a water drench using Epsom Salts which will also help build disease resistance. The Competition - was 3 eating or cooking apples on a plate and was won jointly by Kate Banks and Fiona Quinn. There were plants, gardening books and vegetables for sale supplied by members and the usual raffle and refreshments with lots of chatter about Clematis. Our next meeting is on Monday 13th November when Jayne Foster of Hadleigh Flower Club will be giving a demonstration of how to make arrangements. Members £2 Non-members £4. Save St Mary’s (Hadleigh) Community Project Update Vestry Storage:- The work is due to be completed by December 2023. On 15th December there will a viewing day to enable visitors to marvel at the transformation which has taken place in this small but important room. Heating and Lighting:- We now have an idea of the total costs involved in decommissioning and dismantling the existing heaters and lighting and installing the new chandeliers. The experts have calculated the need for 14 chandeliers to adequately light and comfortably heat the Church. These attractive units can be used collectively or separately as the need arises. A special soirée is planned for invited guests to give churchgoers, Friends of St Mary’s and members of the community a better understanding of how the chandeliers function and the cost involved. Future Church Events, Café Church and Pop-Up Lunchtimes:Attendance at the Café Church on Friday mornings is growing with the added attraction of Craft Fair on the first Friday of every month. The convivial company and tempting smell of Andrew’s famous bacon butties are very hard to resist. If you are looking for something to do in the middle of the week why not join the pop-up lunchtime gatherings from 2pm to 5.30pm every second and fourth Wednesday of the month? These are becoming increasingly popular with young and old alike. All activities are in addition to the quieter times for worship and prayer. The Renewal Team look forward to the day when the Church will provide a welcoming, comfortable facility for all who walk through its doors. Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee Christmas Voucher Scheme The Committee is pleased to announce that the voucher scheme will continue this year with the value remaining at £14 per person to assist with the present high cost of living. Distribution will commence in early December and anyone who qualifies, has not received one previously and would like one should apply before NOVEMBER 17th. Applicants after this date will not receive a voucher until Christmas 2024. To be eligible you must have lived in Hadleigh for 6 months or more and attained the age of 70 by December 31st 2023. Please apply in writing giving name, address, date of birth and time lived in Hadleigh to: David Stokes, Ravenbank, Upper Street, Layham, Ipswich IP7 5JZ In recent years there has always been a number of recipients who have not used their voucher. Commencing in 2023 your name will be removed from the list if a voucher is not used for 2 consecutive years. You will, of course, be free to reapply if you still require one. The Committee is always grateful to those businesses who accept the vouchers in lieu of cash and one or two of those have closed during the year. Mayors Monthly Well, another month has gone by and all of the Christmas decorations have turned up for sale in the shops, I really do not want to blink at the moment, just in case I open my eyes and see easter eggs for sale, where has this year disappeared to. We have some important dates coming up: Saturday 11th November: Hadleigh Royal British Legion are putting on a Festival of Remembrance in St Mary’s Church raising funds for the 2023 Poppy Appeal. This is sure to be a fantastic night, this is a ticketed event and tickets are available at RBL, Keith Avis Newsagents and The Idler. Sunday 12th November: Remembrance Sunday. There will be a parade along the High Street (starting at George Street) up to the War Memorial followed by a fly past and then a service in St Mary’s Church. All welcome to come along. I will be attending both of these events, as I believe it is important to remember why this country’s citizens have such great freedom, and that the men and women of our Armed Services protect that freedom and in many cases have paid the supreme sacrifice. On Friday 17th November I will be hosting a Mayor’s Quiz Night in aid of SSAFA. As most of you will know SSAFA is the charity that I am raising awareness of this year and will also try to raise a good amount of funds to help this charity carry out all of the fantastic work that it does supporting our military personnel and their families whenever they are in need. All of the ticket sales along with raffle sales will go directly to SSAFA (Soldiers’ Sailors’ & Airmen’s Families Association). Every time I go to a quiz night, the great amount of useless information that I have taken years to build up is of no use what so ever!! There is a poster in this edition of the Community News giving more details. Tickets are £5 per person and can be purchased from the Town Council. On Saturday 2nd December, Hadleigh will be holding a Christmas Event to include a Craft Fair, Christmas Market and Entertainment culminating with the Light Switch On. I loved last year’s Christmas Event but this year I will make the effort to get to the food stalls early, so as to avoid disappointment, cant help myself, I’m a foody as my waistline will attest. As the weather is becoming colder, and the nights are drawing in, the heating gets turned up and the lights come on earlier, let’s not forget our neighbours, as this time of the year can be very lonely and hard for some of them, and a friendly smile and a few kind words go along way, if you haven’t seen a neighbour for a while, knock on the door just to check up on them and show them that they are in your thoughts.
Hadleigh Nursing home takes part in the St Elizabeth Hospice Bikefest Seven Hadleigh Nursing Home staff took part in the St Elizabeth Hospice Bikefest. We had two teams of three and our deputy manager Wendy took part in the managers challenge. All residents and staff spent the morning with the teams to cheer them all on. Residents enjoyed waving pom poms to the background music and cheering each person taking part. During the morning we provided a collection bucket for donations and also had an online charity page which raised £164. Each team that took part paid a fee of £99. In total our home raised around £385 for the St Elizabeth Hospice.

Council tenants and repairs If you are a council tenant in Hadleigh in a property which is need of repair, please do let us know. We have heard that there are many council-owned houses across the district which need attention and we want to establish how widespread these problems are. Dozens of people in temporary Jane Caruthers accommodation in Babergh will be helped to break the cycle of homelessness thanks to a new training scheme. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ Housing Solutions service has partnered with The Stone Foundation to offer the training program “Ready, Steady, Rent!” which will help households currently in temporary accommodation to move on to homes in the private or social rented sector. The initiative aims to develop the skills needed to maintain a new tenancy and navigate the responsibilities needed to successfully run a home Simon Dowling long-term. Ten sessions are planned over the next 12 months, helping up to six residents each time, with places offered to those currently living in temporary accommodation or on the Central Suffolk Lettings rent guarantee scheme. Helping to tackle loneliness for older residents Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils joined forces with local groups to help tackle loneliness for older residents, by bringing generations together for free sing-alongs, games and fun. Silver Sunday first took place in London in 2012, but is now recognised nationally, with hundreds of events taking place across the country. Local events saw students from Thomas Gainsborough School join members of the Sporting Memories group for games at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, and a rock’n’roll themed party hosted by the Ansell Memories Café at the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh. Community climate action roadshow in Hadleigh On Saturday 14 October, the councils’ roadshow aimed at helping people to navigate the challenges of climate change arrived at the Ansell Centre in Hadleigh. The aim was to connect residents interested in lowering their carbon footprint and supporting their local area, with organisations that can help them. The roadshow supports the councils’ and the Suffolk Climate Change Partnership’s net zero ambitions by helping and encouraging communities and individuals to live more sustainably. Consultation on Babergh’s new corporate plan We want to know what people in Babergh think about the council’s new corporate plan, which will guide the work of councillors and officers for the next four years. Our proposed focus is on the three pillars of our environment, our people, and our places. Helping residents make their homes warmer and more energy-efficient Warm Homes Suffolk is now accepting applications to fund improvements to
houses across Babergh, making them warmer this coming winter and saving residents money on their energy bills. Warm Homes Suffolk has new funding available for eligible households to put towards energy efficient measures such as insulation, solar panels or heat pumps. An average of £18,000 in funding per property is available for homeowners meeting the following criteria: • Homes that are not heated by mains gas • Homes with an EPC rating of D, or below • A combined household income of under £31,000 (for certain postcodes) Landlords and tenants are also eligible to apply, with qualifying rental properties getting up to two-thirds of costs, as an average grant of up to £12,000. Hadleigh Community Primary School On Tuesday 3rd October 2023, Year 5 & 6 pupils took part in our own Tag Rubgy World Cup Competition. The pupils had been learning Tag Rugby during weekly PE lessons. Attacking, tagging, throwing, receiving, dodging, weaving and scoring tries have all been developed. There were two competitions. In competition number one, winners were England (Pink Team), 2nd was Fiji (Purple Team), 3rd New Zealand (Black team) and 4th, Ireland (Green team). In competition number two, winners were France (Blue Team), 2nd was Japan (Yellow Team), 3rd Wales (Red team) and 4th, South Africa (Orange team). The pupils thoroughly enjoyed showing their talents to all the teachers that came down to support the event, well done for your excellent hard work! On Tuesday 17th October 2023, Hadleigh CPS entered two teams in the Under 11’s Girls Football Festival at Whitton Sports Centre. There were a total of twelve schools that took part in the event. Hadleigh had a Year 5 team in group 1 & a Year 6 team in group 2, where we played matches against Colneis, Claydon, Henley, St Mary's (Woodbridge), East Bergholt, St John's (Ipswich), Morland, Beeches and Cedarwood. Both HCPS teams won their respective groups, which meant that Hadleigh played each other in the grand final! After normal time and extra time, the game finished 0-0 resulting in both teams being awarded joint winners. This was an amazing achievement by all the girls, demonstrating fantastic skills and ability throughout the morning’s games. Well done! Hadleigh Cricket Club First of all, apologies for the lack of an update in the October edition of the HCN – a much-needed postseason holiday meant that I missed the deadline! Since our last update, we held an enjoyable President’s memorial match on the August bank holiday weekend, with many former players dusting off their bats and pads for the occasion. A nasty wrist injury was sustained by our treasurer, Russell, whilst fielding, and we hope that he will soon be ‘match-fit’ – although he has assured us that his playing days are over! The final league games of the season were held on the 9th September. The 1st XI finished the season as Division 1 runners up, although the highest place Suffolk team. The 2nds were fifth in Division 4, the Academy third in the Hunts County Division 2, and the Ladies struggled this year, finishing fifth in their league. If you passed the ground at the end of the season, you would have noticed a hive of activity on the square, as some much-needed renovation work was undertaken thanks to the generous support from our club sponsors. Our aim as a club is to continue to improve the infrastructure, both on and off the pitch, and this could not be achieved without the financial backing from a number of businesses in the local area. If you would like to be part of our valued family of sponsors, please do get in touch to ask about opportunities for the 2024 season. On October 14th, we held our End of Season Party and Senior Awards Evening. A month after the final matches, it was great to see players and their families, as well as social members, to celebrate our successes. A great night was had by all! Hadleigh Evening WI At the start of our October meeting Jeff Rudman gave us a brief talk about how much his mother, who has recently died, had gained from being one of the founder members of our group in 1965. Elaine from Sudbury and District Citizens Advice highlighted the many aspects of their valuable work both locally and nationally. This November we will be preparing a Christmas decoration. The Lunch Bunch were at the Brewer's Arms in October and our next lunch is at Newton Green's The Saracen's Head. In October the Amblers folllowed part of the Connections Trail in Ipswich and it certainly looks as if we will return there some time in the future as there was so much more to be seen. On the 1st of this month they will be walking around Hintlesham. Bookworms liked The Night Gate but the small print and unfamiliar words made a slow (but enjoyable) reading of October's Barchester Towers - I think it helps if one had watched the TV series, albeit some moons ago! The book for November will be lighter reading!! The prizes for the ever popular raffle reflected upcoming Halloween. Each month we have a colour theme when small coins are put against the exhibits brought in that folk vote for - the money collected goes to the Lighthouse Women's Aid in Ipswich. In November the colour is Rainbow. There is no doubt that we are a very friendly group, far more than the jam and Jerusalem image. We have cetainly welcomed a goodly number of new members who have come for a 'taster' and stayed on. We meet at 7.30pm in the Seminar Room above the Library on the third Tuesday of the month. In October 2022 Samantha and Vicky Tapp and Nathalie Hooper ran virtual London Marathon and after covering the distance, thought it wasn’t too bad and might be an idea to try an ultra marathon! Geraldine Suckling got wind of this and thought she’d join them. It took a while to find the right one and the Suffolk Coastal Path 50k was chosen because it was good for first time ultra runners and being in September, they thought it would be cool. Ha! Mother Nature had other ideas and it ended up being one of the hottest days of the year! No amount of training can prepare you for what lies ahead on the day. The heat was already building up at the 8.30am start and did not relent. The course is beautiful taking runners from Lowestoft to Aldeburgh passing the beaches at Kessingland, Benacre Nature Reserve, Dunwich and Thorpness. The lowest point mentally was running along what seemed like miles of shingle beach with Sizewell in the distance and never seeming to get any closer. The highlight had to be the finish flags and cheers on approaching the finish line at Moot Hall. Of course, a paddle in the sea afterwards was great for their weary legs. Geraldine, Sam and Vicky finished superbly in just over 7 hours, Nathalie who really struggled with the heat ran in at 7 hours 45. Adam Chamberlin, who only 2 weeks prior had run 100k, finished in just over 5 hours. Of course the question is would they do another? Geraldine would do one tomorrow if she could, Nathalie and Sam would wait till next year and it’s a definite ‘no’ from Vicky! The same weekend in Aldeburgh John Willis Betts and his team took part in the Aldeburgh Triathlon, winning a trophy for the oldest team! September 10th had Elaine Turner and Claire Jacobs running in the Coastal 10. Both put in fantastic performances with Claire coming in 1st place in the ladies race and 2nd overall, once again having to contend with the heat. The following weekend was the Ipswich Half Marathon ran by Stuart Price, Kay Oxford, Joel Bamsey and Kitty Rigby. This is a challenging course, but Stuart made it look easy with a fabulous time of 1hr 20. Kay was on top form and finished in 1hr50. The same weekend Stuart Hunt ran a very good time at the Dedham 10k. Meanwhile Geraldine took part in the Duathlon Sprint in Stowmarket and Jo Sargent competed in the Triathlon Sprint. Congratulations to Geraldine who came first female and this was her first duathlon event! The 24th September was a very busy race day. Starting with the Langham 10k, which is an undulating course, Claire, Joel and Ryan McNeil ran and once again Claire finished 1st lady with a cracking time of 35:40! In London Sam and Vicky Tapp ran the Vitality 10k. Vicky got a knocked off 2 minutes off her personal best and came in at 45:10. Rebecca Martin completed the Sandringham 10k and meanwhile, following the Essex Way the Mayflower Half Marathon from Harwich to Mistley was taking place. A very picturesque course ran by Steve and Stuart Hunt, Jo, Neil Holloway, Geraldine and Nathalie. Some runners ran some extra mileage due to signage sabotage which turned the Half Marathon into something a bit longer! Hadleigh United Football Club Hello! It’s been around three months since my appointment as Chairwoman of Hadleigh Utd FC and what a busy time it has been. I’ve been getting to grips with the many, myriad aspects of running a football club and trying to get to know, what seems like hundreds, of volunteers who help out at the club. How lucky we are to have such support from the kind and generous people of Hadleigh. Thank you so much! The football season for everyone, minis & diddies, first team, U18s, U23s, youth, girls, veterans and our Dragons is well underway now and, as always, we’re having our ups and downs. Nevertheless, the important thing is that everyone who comes along to the club has a positive experience. Whether you’re a mum bringing your five year old to minis & diddies or one of our first team players, smashing their way to another win, the aim is to enjoy football. We are planning to host many events over the winter. By the time you read this, hopefully you will have attended our popular Fireworks Display on 3 November, tickets are selling fast already. Parties, Christmas events, car boots in the spring, craft fairs are all in the pipeline. The Suffolk Girls and Women’s Football League are hoping to stage their Cup and Plate Finals in Hadleigh in April, a great honour for us. Of course, our ever popular Mascot Days will continue throughout the season. Come along to see our youngsters bring out the first team. Don’t forget that we have a cozy, clean and welcoming Clubhouse for hire, so if you have an upcoming birthday, wedding, or anniversary party, give us a call or send in an email and we’ll be happy to chat about what we could do for you. As I write, the weather has turned much cooler and we edge towards my favourite time of year, autumn. We are fortunate indeed to be surrounded by gorgeous rolling hills, woodlands that are now changing hue to the rich browns and reds of the season and the ever-changing character of our treasured Brett river. The Hadleigh United Under 12's completed a 5 mile sponsored walk on Sunday 15th October 2023 to raise money for the Christmas Present Trust. They were blindfolded, with one group dropped off in Kersey and a second group in Polstead. No phones were allowed. Hadleigh Walkers Our November walk on Saturday 11th will start and finish in Nayland. The distance of the entire route is around 8 miles, and we should be back in Nayland around 1300. We will have two refreshment stops along the way. We will meet at the Nayland Village Hall car park in Church Lane. Coming from Stoke by Nayland, take the first turning on the LHS (Mill Street) and Church Lane is a few hundred yards on the left (What three words – Events.Bleaker.Loosens). We will depart at 0930 and follow a route North onto the Stour Valley Path to Beacham’s Fm, Leavenheath, Farthing Hall, South on St Edmunds Way to Wissington and back to Nayland along the River Stour. As usual, we aim to average a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) and walkers need to be able to maintain this pace. Any kind of weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground may be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Tournaments at Hadleigh Tennis Club Hadleigh Tennis Club have had an exciting couple of months. In September we hosted the annual tennis match against Bildeston first played in 1881. A fine afternoon of tennis saw Bildeston win both the ladies’ and men’s matches. Martin Rogers collected the trophy for the Men’s competition and Penny Cubitt for the Ladies’. Bildeston Tennis Club will host next year when we shall endeavour to regain the trophies. President’s Day followed in October. It was a fun tennis tournament organised by our President and hugely enjoyed by everyone. Vic Akerman won the overall trophy and Penny Dunnett was runner up. Lavenham Carpet Bowls Club Time once again to adjust our clocks as we get cooler weather. For the Carpet Bowls Club it means time to start our InHouse competitions for those who would like to be a bit more competitive, entry is optional. Our trophies are kept in a cabinet over the library terminal, and winner's names are engraved on them each year, as well as receiving individual trophies to keep. We usually start off with the President's Cup, a trophy donated by a past President, now sadly no longer with us, Ernie Spouge. This is a match between 4 lassies and 4 lads, randomly chosen on the day of the match. The lassies won in 2022, so the lads were seeking their revenge, and got it with a win for the lads. Well done to Mike, John, Jack and George. After this starter match, the doubles and singles competitions are played over the next few weeks. Meanwhile normal roll up play continues on our other 3 mats. The Club offers both competitive and social bowling, something we hope for everyone. As always the first two sessions are free to try out Carpet Bowls, and see if you would enjoy it. Our sessions are 2pm on Wednesday afternoons and 7pm on Thursday evening at Lavenham Village Hall. My Tai Chi Journey I am interested in simple things; how to feel well, how to be happy and contented with who I am. I am also curious, inquisitive, I like exploring, discovering areas of myself which are dormant and bring them out, get to know them, play, twist, tweak, develop them. The Eastern practices with their wisdom, subtleties and its beautiful poetry provided me with the ‘kit’ I needed to start getting a grip on myself and life. I arrived to this after a prolonged period where things were OK, but an underlying unhappiness, a feeling of emptiness, was forever present. I was also, needless to say, unfit. Once I started practising Tai Chi, slowly but surely things got better, I gained a sense of direction, clarity was not an unattainable thing looming on the horizon, and I felt ten times fitter! From there onwards it was easy, follow that path and enjoy. There are always obstacles, diversions, hesitations, and the dreadful return to old patterns. A wise master and some excellent teachers kept me on track till I developed my own self-discipline, till I reached that point of no return. I like to think that I could help you to arrive to a similar place. Help you on your journey, help you to feel well, at ease with yourself and others, fit in mind, body and spirit. All I ask for is commitment, patience, perseverance and trust in me and yourself. It is good to be practical, to set no-nonsense targets. The first one is to do with time. How long? Give yourself six months of regular practice, then reassess. My master always used to say ‘you only need one car’. You will by the end of the six months know if this is ‘your car’. I will be running a Free Tai Chi Taster at Lavenham Village Hall on Wednesday 15 November 9.30 to 10.30.
