Have you seen Bats in Hadleigh?

Bats are a vital part of wildlife and a good indicator of the state of the natural world. They are also in decline and urgently need our protection. Hadleigh Environmental Action Team set up the Hadleigh Bat Group to do just this. Our first step was to build boxes for bats to roost in to replace their loss of habitat.

Thanks to the support of the Men’s Shed in Hadleigh we have just taken delivery of 20 bat boxes in addition to those the group made with Benton End. Great examples of groups in our community coming together to help each other and nature. The next few months will be spent putting these boxes up around Hadleigh. Keep an eye open for them. Thank you to the Men’s Shed!

Our next step is to find out what species of bat we have in Hadleigh, how many there are and where they roost.

We are especially interested in where they have their nurseries and rear their young. The last time anyone looked at this was in 2016 when 6 of the 17 UK species of bat were found in and around Hadleigh. The Bat Group has lots of enthusiasm and we are learning a lot about bats, but we need your help with our survey. Do you think you have bats in your house or outbuildings? You may have seen them roosting or watched them coming out at dusk. If so, can you let us know and, if you are happy, we can come and survey your bats. Is there somewhere where you see lots of bats in the evening, usually around dusk when they come out to feed? Can you let us know as this will help us to find the best places to look for them.

What Next?

Visitors to the recent ‘What’s About Hadleigh Event’ (WAH) were able to view the proposals for the renewal of St Mary’s Church. A pictorial display and model highlighted the plans for making this iconic building fit for the future. A representative of the Save St Mary’s Community Project was on hand to answer any questions. If you were unable to attend the WAH event and have an interest in the proposed adaptations, there is still an opportunity, in St Mary’s, to look at the architect’s photos of the suggested changes and the order in which these will be carried out.

A much-needed sound system will be installed very soon which should greatly improve the quality of the various public performances staged in Church.

The next consideration will be heating and lighting. Happily, there is a possible single solution for both; chandeliers. Fourteen in all will be needed and these will elegantly provide both services. With running costs in mind, it is reassuring to know that these attractive units can all be used at the same time or independent of each other. A final decision has yet to be made by all involved in the renewal programme. As with York Minster, Kings College, Cambridge and many other iconic UK churches, newly installed solar panels will assist with the overall cost of power and be externally unobtrusive. If proof were ever needed that the Church is vital to the community’s activities, a look the recent numbers should be sufficient. Apart from worshippers, over 700 people have crossed the threshold to participate in a wide variety of activities from pop-up cafés to classical concerts and much more. How Hadleigh would miss these facilities and what potential there is if they were greatly improved.

If you would like to be part of this ambitious, exciting project, please contact Jan Devey for further information

Are you sat on a Mortgage Time Bomb?

As of 11th May this year, the Bank of England raised interest rates from 4.25% to 4.5% - their highest level for almost 15 years and the twelfth consecutive increase since December 2021. At the time of writing this, another rate looks imminent. The cost of living continues to rise, with soaring fuel, energy and food prices. People are reducing their spending, whilst the Bank is trying to contain the cost of living and prevent a recession with the interest rate increases.

Additionally, figures from the Office of National Statistics calculate an expected 1.3 million mortgage fixed deals will come to an end in 2023 and most of those are currently on rates under 2%. At the moment the average 2-year fixed mortgage costs around 5.5%. What does this mean? Well, anyone with a mortgage deal coming to an end this year is set to see their monthly payments increase by an average of £192 and those with larger mortgages are set to suffer even more.

What can you do to help navigate the current financial challenges you’re facing? Talking to us, your local advisers, is a good place to start. We can help to make sure you and your family have the most appropriate mortgage and policies in place.

Cycle Sportive marks 90th

Anniversary of record-breaking flight

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s Annual Gayford Flyer sportive will take place on Sunday, 10th September. It costs £15 to enter (via the British Cycling website) and this includes refreshments. We are keen to encourage cyclists to try out the many lightly trafficked routes around the town. The Gayford Flyer’s two signed routes of around 60 and 30 miles incorporates mostly quiet roads with some great views and the odd challenge. Once riders have crossed the finish line, they can celebrate their achievement with family and friends while enjoying post-race food, drink, entertainment. Details on how to enter can be found www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

The Gayford Flyer is named in recognition of Hadleigh's world record-breaking aviator, Oswald Gayford. In 1933 he flew nonstop from England to South Africa with Gilbert Nicholetts. The flight covered 5,340 miles. Returning to Hadleigh, the whole town turned out to cheer him in an open topped car to his mother’s home in Angel Street. The feat was front page news and a Pathe news reel report said: "Just think of those two flying for two and a half days and nights through all kinds of weather over land and sea…once again showed what British engineering, brains and pluck could do."

On Tuesdays, our Junior Club meets at Hadleigh Community Primary at 18:30 to 19:30, with a monthly ride on the Railway Walk to help our young riders to build their confidence to ride in the ‘wild’. Our coaches will work with riders on specific skills and techniques to help them improve all the way through the season.

On Sundays: our Club Ride departs at 9.00 from The George Inn, High Street, Hadleigh. This ride is normally about 30 to 40 miles at a speed of approximately 15 mph, depending on the preferences of the ride leader and the capabilities of the group. Our rides are 'no-drop'. That means you won't be left behind (unless you choose to be), but the group may split into smaller groups of different speeds if that makes it easier to handle. Keep an eye out for the details from the ride leader nearer the time.

The rides and activities are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling Instagram hadleighcc or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

3G Pitch for Hadleigh?

My name is Gavin Nightingale and I have lived in Hadleigh for 45 years and worked in Hadleigh for 23 years. As I have a son who plays in a local football team so I follow with a keen interest the Hadleigh Town Council’s web site and in particular their vision and ambition to upgrade the sports facilities at the Layham Road Sports Ground, by installing an All-Weather Artificial Grass Pitch, often referred to as a 3G Pitch. I was pleased to see that Hadleigh Town Council recognised and agreed in 2020 there was a need for a 3G pitch for Community use. Hadleigh residents will probably be aware that In Hadleigh the Town Council owns the land used by our Cricket, Rugby and Football Clubs.

However, I was very disappointed to read in the Town Council Minutes that the 3 Pitch project has been put on hold, pending investigations by the Football Foundation (they offer very sizeable grants for 3G pitches). The main reason for the hold is that Hadleigh Town Council decided in June 22 they did not want a 3G Pitch that contained a rubber crumb infill. I noted this decision was taken because of a concern raised by a Councillor about the fact that rubber crumb infill (Crushed Car Tyres) contains micro plastics and there was an environmental concern that there would be an escape of the rubber crumb into the nearby River Brett and that the use of rubber crumb infill may be banned in the future.

Ok I thought, that’s fair enough, a few months delay to explore alternative organic based infill would eliminate the environmental concerns, but now I am concerned that I do not see any indication from the Town Council meeting minutes as to when the 3G project is expected to proceed.

I have read with interest in a recent news article that AFC Sudbury (next to the river Stour) have submitted plans to Babergh District Council for a second 3G Pitch and that development has been supported by the Sudbury Town Council. I also have read a press article that states Framlingham Town Council are backing a 3G pitch project and Haverhill Town Council are backing a second 3G pitch. I am also aware that Colchester Borough Council have had several 3G pitches laid down at the Colchester Northern Gateway. There is no mention about concerns from these Councils over the rubber crumb infill. These articles got me thinking have Hadleigh Town Council really done their homework, investigated and considered the various mitigations that other 3G sites have in place to retain the rubber crumb on the pitch area. I have not seen any evidence of this, so I did a bit of my own research that I want to share with all residents of Hadleigh.

https://sapca.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/FAQ_3G_AGP_July_2022.pdf

I understand that 3G pitches with rubber crumb Infill are still being constructed up and down the country with Football Foundation support. I do recognise there are growing environmental concerns about the rubber crumb In-fill and I noted in the Town Council report published in August 2022 that the Football Foundation also recognise this and are conducting research using alternative organic materials. However, I speak to so many people (young and old) in Hadleigh who are involved with Hadleigh United Football Club and Hadleigh Rugby Club and I hear how difficult and frustrating it is for our local clubs, run entirely by volunteers, when they cannot access all year-round coaching and training facilities for the girls and boys of Hadleigh and the immediate local area without having to travel out of Hadleigh to Colchester or Ipswich during the dark winter months.

I think it’s time for the residents of Hadleigh to register their views about the immediate need for a 3G pitch that serves the Hadleigh Community, and in particular if you think the Town Council should revisit their decision on the rubber crumb/environmental issue and fully investigate the risks and mitigation options that it seems many other local councils have considered. I would also be interested to hear if you think the Town Council should keep the Hadleigh 3G pitch on hold for however long it takes for the Football Foundation to complete their research into organic based Infill materials.

I am happy to facilitate receiving your feedback and forwarding a summary and sending it to the Hadleigh Town Clerk so that our recently co-opted Town Councillors can take our views on board.

Please email your views about a 3G pitch for Hadleigh to: g-nightingale1@hotmail.co.uk or if you do not use email, please write directly to the Town Clerk at Hadleigh Town Council. Thank you for reading this far, Gavin Nightingale.

General Manager with Michelin Star pedigree joins The Bildeston Crown

A General Manager who has worked with celebrity chefs including Tom Kerridge and at his family’s own Michelin star establishment has joined The Bildeston Crown Hotel, part of the Nedging Hall Estate, in Suffolk.

George Bonwick, 28, began his career at the age of 15 as a back waiter at William Drabble’s Michelin starred Aubergine in his hometown of Marlow, Buckinghamshire. He then moved on to Tom Kerridge’s two Michelin starred Hand & Flowers, also located in the town, where he worked throughout his university years.

On graduating with a First class honours degree in Classics with Philosophy from Royal Holloway, hospitality was calling Bonwick who joined his father Simon Bonwick’s establishment, The Crown at Burchetts Green. This was awarded a Michelin star in 2019. The following year, as General Manager, Bonwick led his team to win the prestigious Michelin Service Award, which recognises outstanding levels of service in hospitality.

Commenting on his new role, George Bonwick, said: “I’m delighted to be working alongside our incredibly talented chefs at The Bildeston Crown, which has been owned by the Buckle family for more than 20 years. Together, we are committed to delivering excellent dishes, with many ingredients grown on the Estate, as well as a warm welcome and attentive customer service.”

We have a super line up of live music throughout July including the sensational Punk Soul Brothers, a French-CatalanBritish band from Perpignan, France who will play the Cock Inn on Friday 7th July. Its electro dance music with a punk soul and the fun starts at 8.30pm. They have a big local following as one of the band members is from Hadleigh. Please arrive early as this one, although free to enter as always, will be a sell out! Their tour includes Port De Banyuls Sur Mer, Port Vendres, London, Manchester, Bristol, Wales and yes Hadleigh, Suffolk and coincides with the release of their new album The First. The Blaggers will play at The Cock on Sunday 2nd July at 3pm. These guys are super duper and have played here on a number of Saturday nights to a full house. Sunday the 9th sees a debut gig for Annika who will entertain at our afternoon Soiree. Annika was the former lead singer at Thomson Dream. With a repertoire of songs from the 50’s to current day. An Ipswich gal so one not miss. Words & Music with their great songs from the Beatles and others of that era are back with us on Sunday 16th and five piece Band of Mold will visit on Saturday 22nd. Its still not over for the music as we finish off July in style with the wonderful Buzz playing for us on Sunday 30th, for those with any strength left. Saturday music commences at 8.30 while our Sunday afternoon Soiree starts at 3pm.

We went for more music as sport tails off during the summer months. However, F1 Grand Prix fans will be well chuffed to be reminded that there are four races in July. Starting with Austria on the 2nd July followed by the ever exciting British GP on the 9th. The race moves to Hungary on the 23rd and finally July wraps up at the Belgium GP on the 30th. At the time of writing this article Verstappen is well clear on 170 points thus far with Hamilton lagging on 87 points and no wins. Silverstone?? Let’s see.

Its ‘anyone for tennis’ month as we return to Wimbledon. If anyone watched the Roland Garros tournament in June, you will know that we are in for a treat. A whole bunch of new talent arriving on the scene. Djokovic edged his way to a great final and won but he had a few lucky escapes enroute. Poland’s Iga Swiatek won comfortable in the ladies final for the third time. She is not a fan of the grass but would love to win at Wimbledon for sure.

Feeling stumped? Well don’t be as July will be awash with cricket as 4 of the 5 Tests matches between England v Australia fall in the month. There have been some great contests over recent years so lets hope that the next tests series will be as such. If your interest is golf then luckily the 151st Open Championship takes place from 16th to the 23rd July. Live coverage from The Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake. Did you know that the open has been played at Hoylake 12 times in past years…so maybe unlucky 13 for someone. You can watch all this live sport with us at The Cock. Our multi-channel system allows us to screen three different events at the same time. We have a giant screen too for special events. We also have several pub based games such as darts (beginners night every Wednesday), pool, bar billiards and ale drinking. The latter game has the most participants. Finally as the football season came to elongated end, congratulations to Ipswich Town on promotion back to the Championship, Manchester City for winning the treble, including a tough encounter with Inter Milan in The Champions League Final in Istanbul. There may be some shocks ahead as we enter next season as a number of clubs have been accused of breaking FIFA’s FFP rules (Financial Fair Play) and are under investigation. Man City is one club under the spotlight and so too is Everton. If found guilty they could suffer point deductions, fines and competition exclusions. Lets see, though most footy fans believe that an element of fairness needs to come in to play as the big clubs are getting bigger. FFP is quite complex to understand. The basics are that clubs are not permitted to lose more than £105 million over a three year period. Revenue is off set against expenditure and the way that transfer fees are amortised (depreciated) clouds the real picture. Big clubs seem to be able to introduce unrealistic revenue via enhanced sponsorship, if you follow my drift, resulting in their ability to sign bigger names and pay higher wages. But come on Ipswich and good luck next season.

Welcome: The Chair welcomed everyone Report Of The Last Meeting: Accepted Matters Arising: None

Standard Updates

Hadleigh Town Council No report

Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council New councillors are still settling in and undergoing training. The June council meeting has been cancelled. There is considerable consternation about the possibility of a Starbucks Drivethrough by the new estate at the top of Lady Lane close to the 1071. Due to pre-determination rules, no information could be given for this matter other than to confirm that, as with all applications, it would be considered purely on merit (inter alia environmental & biodiversity guidelines, highway access, local impact etc) and not on the company applying. This matter had been discussed and objected to by HTC, supporting resident’s concerns. All available information (a considerable amount appears to be missing) is on BDC’s Planning website and anyone wishing to raise concerns or make comments is encouraged to write in, as these letters carry considerable weight in determining an application’s approval, or not.

Visit Hadleigh Sadly there was insufficient High Street business support for the planned programme of Creativity Unwrapped – this year’s theme for the National Heritage Festival in September.

On Hadleigh Hidden Gardens day, Visit Hadleigh was in the Guildroom and assisted some 444 people by providing information, answering questions and discussing the Cedric Morris Exhibition.

Negotiations have been successful for a six-week period to 31 July for a PopUp Visitor Information Centre in 46 High Street (this is the old Papillon menswear shop, near Ferguson’s Deli). Opening times will be on a Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9am – 3pm.

The Community Gardeners would welcome assistance on a Wednesday morning between 10am and noon each week to help maintain and develop the community gardens. The hanging baskets and town’s planters are thriving thanks to Dan’s watering in this current spell of hot weather.

Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) The report was given to the meeting and can be found in the PPG column in each month’s Hadleigh Community News.

St Marys Church Final checks on the upgrade to the sound system have been completed and work is hoped to start towards the end of summer. Formal approval for refurbishing the Vestry still awaited. The next phase of the reordering progresses with initial agreement to have the 14 chandelier heat/light system. This has meant discussions with UK Power as the incoming power supply will also need to be upgraded. The cost implication of this is yet to be found out. Due to a string of thefts and damage to local churches (including our own Shelly church) security at St Mary’s has been significantly increased. Grateful and sincere thanks were offered to Frank Minns who, almost single-handedly, organised this year’s very successful Hidden Gardens of Hadleigh. Without him, the event would likely not have taken place.

HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team All projects are ongoing but little extra to report this month. There was a huge amount of interest for the HEAT stand at the Hadleigh Show and at What’s About Hadleigh? The Bat Group meets weekly during the summer. The Net Zero campaign is at the detailed planning stage and the Climate Café project is being progressed for people to come together to discuss environment, climate and biodiversity concerns in an informal, social environment.

Cost Of Living Concerns None raised.

Benton End Benton End hosted some 700 visitors on 3 June (Hidden Gardens), 71 of whom paid extra to undertake a tour of the fascinating house. All tours (10-14 people on each, on the hour every hour, for six hours ! ) were sold out and a further open day will be put on in August or September to

enable those unable to see the house this time, to do so. A considerable sum was raised from garden ticket sales for the Friends of St Mary’s. The Benton End Irises were all in flower and the gardens were greatly admired. They had market stalls selling tote bags and other goods, seeds and refreshments. Twelve volunteers helped organise the day and it was very helpful in informing Benton how well they could manage such a large event for the future. Visitors included gardening and art groups from all over the UK – possibly lured by the Benton End Garden having received a coveted gold medal at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

Richard Fletcher advised the Forum that the Neighbourhood Plan's major surveys of the character and assets of the town had been completed, complimented by several consultant reports concerning landscape and biodiversity, transport, and design codes. This wealth of information can be found on the Town Council website https://hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk/hadleigh-neighbourhood-plan/ and it also includes a Shopfront and Advertisements design code for the town centre and a Local List of properties which, whilst never to be Listed Buildings, have particular architectural, historic or social character that gives a distinct sense of place to Hadleigh. These properties can be found on the Hadleigh Society website https://hadsoc.org.uk/local-list/. The next stage in the preparation of the Neighbourhood Plan involves the Town Council’s planning consultants drafting the plan details with the intention of submitting a report to the full Town Council in August, followed by eventual reference to Babergh District Council for approval before being put through an independent examination by the end of the year. Eventually the Neighbourhood Plan will be put to a public referendum in 2024.

Maggie Hambling is exhibiting at Gainsborough House, Sudbury, and will be curating a Cedric Morris exhibition there later in the year An article in last week’s Sunday Times Colour Supplement on this, mentions Hadleigh several times.

Finally, summer has arrived and it is extremely hot!

We have been very busy receiving new styles of clothing and accessories daily to keep up with demand, and to make sure there is something for everyone. One our best sellers has been the asymmetrical hem top. This is perfect for the hot weather as it is made from cotton and linen making it breathable. These are available in many different colourways, which can be worn with shorts, trousers, or a skirt. Many customers have returned for more than one colour. We have restocked our sunglasses as these have been a great seller for another year. This year’s styles feature bold frames and tortoise shell as well as sleek plain designs. So, whether you fancy something quirky or a more tamed we have them all. All of our sunglasses feature UV 400 protection lenses. Accessories can really make an outfit. One of my favourite pieces of jewellery at the moment is the chunky chain matching necklace, bracelet and earrings. This can really set off an outfit and add that extra touch of glamour. It has been lovely seeing so many familiar and new faces in the shop. As always, we appreciate your continued support. Enjoy the sun!

I would like to thank Ainger Holbrows for providing such a great service year after year. Over the past 4 years, and sometimes at short notice, I have had to ask them to repair, replace, and run a diagnostic check on my A3, and each time they have given me exemplary service. I would thoroughly recommend them.

Hadleigh

Old School

Art Gallery Show this July

Hadleigh Old School, the events venue at 5 Bridge Street, Hadleigh IP7 6BY presents “A Gardener’s Paradise” – fine art paintings by Janie Pirie across two weekends this July. Entry to the exhibition is free including the opening Preview night at 630pm on Friday 21st

July 2023, and continuing Sat 22 (10-5) Sun 23 (11-4) Fri 28 (10-4) Sat 29 (105) Sun 30 (11-4).

Cast your mind back to the coloured pencils you used at school, think of the drawings you created with them, then take a good look at the work of Janie Pirie… and think again!

By any standard her work is breath-taking, but I would defy anyone to realise each piece is worked using the humble coloured pencil.

Once a watercolour artist and children’s book illustrator Janie turned her attention to flora and fauna from her own garden in 2007. “It was the detail that first got my attention,” said Janie. “We are probably all guilty of walking past flowers, fruit, and vegetables without taking too much notice, because we all believe we know exactly what they are and what they look like. However, if you stop and really look you see the complexities and the beauty of everything.” It is this detail that Janie achieves in her works, and they must be seen to be believed.

Janie was awarded gold medals from the Royal Horticultural Society in 2009 and 2014, Certificates of Botanical Merit from the Society of Botanical Artists, of which she is a Fellow member, and numerous awards from the UK Coloured Pencil Society including Best Human Portrait, Best Still Life, Best Botanical, and Best in Show.

Her work has been included in books about coloured pencil artwork in the UK and the USA. In 2012 she was invited to teach in the USA and has had her work purchased by the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She teaches all over the UK and runs regular workshops at Cambridge University Botanical Gardens, Flatford Mill, nr. Dedham, The Ipswich Institute, Higham Hall in The Lake District and Elm Farm Studios near Colchester. “Teaching is a bonus. I enjoy showing students how to achieve more than they ever thought they could, and it’s wonderful when they succeed and excel, but most importantly, they should have fun while they’re doing it!”

“Wherever I look I see beautiful plants – and if I stop and look closely, I see so much more. It is this detail that inspires me - and I want to share it. I know I will never stop drawing – there is a whole world out there to capture on paper!

I’m driven by just one thing – and that is that every piece of work I complete needs be just that little bit better than the last, because if you think you’ve reached perfection where is there to go?”

Over 70 works will be on display, in a range of sizes: this collection is just a tiny peek into the world around us and will give you a glimpse into the amazing things we pass by each day and the details that makes them so beautiful… all with the humble coloured pencil.

Your RSVP to the Preview event at 630pm on Friday 21st July is appreciated: hadleigholdschool@gmail.com

A Taste of Musical Theatre

For this year’s summer concert Hadleigh Community Choir takes to the stage: the repertoire is made up from a choice of songs and medleys taken from stage musicals. It is a varied programme of well-known and popular pieces widely recognised and then there are some lesser known and equally beautiful songs. Spoiler alert: Bohemian Rhapsody features and so do Les Miserables and Westside Story!

If you find yourself wondering what exactly the choir will be performing, or you are already humming some songs you think may feature, the concert is taking place on 15 July at 2.00 p.m. for a matinee performance and 7.00 p.m. in the evening at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh, Market Place, ticket price £7.50 and £10.00 respectively. The evening performance is followed by a summer drinks reception at the Ansell Centre and the ticket includes a drink/refreshment at the reception. Tickets are available from Avis Newsagents, The Little Ginger Bee and Frankie’s along different stretches of the High Street or you can email us at contactus@hadleighcommunitychoir.org.uk.

At the Summer Concert we are saying good-bye to our Musical Director Sarah Gallop who has led the choir for six years and is now relocating after her recent marriage. Sarah has been a great asset to the choir and we will very much miss her, her quirky humour and her vigour in teaching the choir the music we are performing at each concert.

Back to humming those songs: do you find yourself humming or singing along to songs on the radio, singing in the shower, do you get an earworm sometimes? Then you are a singer! The most common misconception about singing is “…but I can’t sing!” Yes, you can.

Singing is natural and singing in a group is proven to lift our spirits. Last autumn, the choir conducted a survey of its members to find out what works for them – one theme that came back a lot was that singing lifts their mood and being part of the choir stimulated their well-being, mentally and also physically. Once you have come to the concert and enjoyed the music there, you have all summer to work out a plan how you give it a go and then join us for a trial rehearsal when we come back after the summer break in September. Rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings, 7.15 p.m.- 9.00 p.m. at the United Reformed Church in Hadleigh. Newcomers can try a rehearsal or two to see if it suits them, nor prior singing experience required and you don’t even have to read music.

So – get your tickets and join us for our Summer Concert full of music known from stages on Broadway and in the West End of London!

Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club

It’s been a busy time for our runners who have been out at various races in the County.

Claire Jacobs has been smashing club records setting her fourth consecutive Hares Ladies 10k club record at the Breckland 10k on the 1 May. She produced a gun to tape victory in 35.23, not only winning the ladies race but also the race outright beating all the men! What was more remarkable was she was sent the wrong way at one point and had to double back and later had to take evasive action up a bank to avoid passing traffic. As expected of an athlete in such excellent form Claire also clocked an unofficial club 5k road best going through halfway in 17.39. Outstanding work Claire!

Little Bromley 10k on the 16 April was well attended by the Hares. Congratulations to Crystal Murray who came first in her age group and to Claire Jacobs who won Women’s overall.

Joel Bamsey, Nikki Vince and Joanne Sargent ran the undulating course of Bungay Half Marathon also on the 16 April. Well done to Nikki who not only got a personal best time in this race but also in Milton Keynes Half Marathon 2 weeks later!

The 7 May was the scenic Bury to Clare 18 mile race. Adam Chamberlin, Jo Sargent and Kitty Rigby ran through mud, a small river and lots more mud! Great times by all considering the terrain.

Our Junior members have also been very busy training this year and did a great job representing the club at this year’s County Track and Field Championships, held at Bury St Edmunds on Sunday 14th May. During the course of a rather warm afternoon, 5 members competed against other clubs in both 800m and 1500m distances. Competing in the 800m U13 girls category, Laila McNeill and Ella Baalham put in solid performances to both achieve PB’s of 2.37.9 & 3.14.8 respectively and finishing 2nd and 8th overall. Harry Alexander was our sole runner in the 800m U13 boys category, but did a great run despite carrying an injury, also achieving a PB of 3.03.6 and finishing in 6th place. For the 1500m U13 boys, Felix Clover did well, putting in a steady run to finish 12th in a time of 6.58.6. Finally, another solid performance from Daniel Cooper in the 1500m U15 boys category saw him finish in 8th place with a PB of 5.30.2. A very well done to all of you. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre

Doesn’t time fly when you’re having fun!. This will be my last blog of the summer term and what a bonkers time we have had with that description. I heard tell we could blame El Nino for the horrible cold wind everyone in East Anglia had to suffer, and the lack of rain.

Practising 2 elements of the Countryside Challenge are Belle and her young rider: posting a letter and opening a gate. The riders must remember to say a ‘thank you’ to the ‘farmer’ as they pass. Our winners will be announced too late for this blog but we have a Facebook page called The Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding RDA where successes will be celebrated.

We all say a huge thank you to Mary Thornley for being here every day for two weeks to judge riders doing The Countryside Challenge (beginning June 5th) and Dressage (beginning June 12th) Rosettes are being awarded to all who participate.

Looking ahead to when we resume rides in September there are to be two fund raisers in that month. The much missed Stride Out, date to be confirmed, and a Dog Show on Sunday 24th, so please come and support us then. www. shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172

Hadleigh Community Yard Sales

Many thanks for everyone who took part in the Hadleigh Community Yard Sale on the 17th June. We had 40 houses all over Hadleigh sign up for the event which is fantastic. The deadline for sign up was the 1st of June, I did leave it till 5th June for late comers due to getting the maps and packs printed I need a deadline. Sorry for those people who wanted to take part a week or even days before and couldn't. This time I decided to hold it on a Saturday as this is what people had asked for and it also supported the local shops too. Just so people know this is not a money making event, I actually lose money as I have to pay for advertising the event before I even get any money in. The sale is advertised all over Suffolk and people came from Colchester, Framlingham and Clacton so it shows my adverting works. This year I made a total loss of £100.98, to see a breakdown of my expenses which don't include home printing and any staff costs please check out my website www.clarkesevents.uk

Yet again thank you so much for all who took part and visited the sales, I value all feedback about the event as the purpose is to get people to visit Hadleigh.

Hadleigh & District Flower Club

For our June meeting we had our floral demonstration from Sandra Price from Walton-onthe-Naze. Entitled “Any Old Iron”. Sandra used different iron stands and containers, and all displayed with a great variety of flowers using lots of different colours and textures. Sandra told lots of jokes throughout the evening and was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

We also had a visit from Jan and Louise from RDA The Shelley Centre For Therapeutic Riding, to receive the cheque of £800, which was raised at our charity lunch. We would like to thank all our members and guests that attended this event and in making it such a great success in raising such a large amount for a great local charity. Our next meeting with be different from normal as we are having a garden visit to Priory Farmhouse, Gt. Wenham. CO7 6PL. Arrival 7pm for 7.30pm. Please hope you can make it and bring a friend.

Rotary Review

Obituary It is with great sadness that we record the death of another longstanding member of the Club. Alan Williams was a member for over 40 years and gave exemplary service during that time. He played a full part in all social, sporting and charitable activities. He often acted as a Committee Chairman and is a Past President. He was a member of the Club when we were young enough to play sport and represented the Club at both cricket and golf. He participated and enjoyed Club weekend breaks both in this country and on the Continent. However during the past year or two his activities were restricted by ill health but he continued to support the Club as much as possible. Alan will be very much missed and members’ thoughts are with Doris, Neil, Nigel and their families

Club News: 1. As the Rotary year draws to a close another member will be lost. Fred Creed is no longer fit enough to attend meetings etc and will lapse his membership. Fred has been a keen member for some years and will be remembered especially for taking his turn as Father Christmas during the Christmas Collections. We will miss you, Fred.

2. On a brighter note we welcome a new member – Sue Clark who is joining us from a neighbouring District. Sue is an experienced Rotarian and will bring fresh ideas and new energy to the Club. We hope that she will settle happily into our small group. Perhaps there are a number of you who might like to follow her lead. Just contact a club member for more information.

3. The Club took part in ‘About Hadleigh’ which was held in the Town Hall recently and 3 or 4 people expressed interest in Rotary. One has already attended a coffee meeting and it is hoped that the others will do the same in due course. In the near future the club hopes to set up a Friends of Hadleigh Rotary Club section which will allow you to find out more about us without the commitment of formal membership. It will give you the opportunity to attend coffee meetings, social events and ,perhaps, an occasional lunch as well as helping with any fundraising events if you wish. Watch this space for more information in the coming months.

4. Work will soon start on repairing and refurbishing the Christmas Float and members are very pleased that the recently formed Men’s Shed has offered their assistance with this major task. We do not have many members who can help with this so we welcome any aid which is available. We still seek a suitable place in or close to Hadleigh where the work may be carried out. If you think that you can help in any way please ring the contact no at the end of this article.

Rotary Fellowships: A lesser known but nevertheless important part of Rotary is the development of many different fellowships within Rotary. There are 107 active Fellowships at present most of them with a worldwide membership and covering a myriad of interests, hobbies and sports – they range from Flying to Philately, Esperanto to Golf and Cricket. There was recently a Rotary cricket tour to Austalialia not quite the Ashes but a great experience, I am sure. Family and friends are always welcome at the regular gatherings. One of our newer members joined the Caravan Owners fellowship and has already made many new friends and contacts at the regular meetings around the country. You do not have to be a Rotarian to join a fellowship so, If you wish to meet more like minded people to yourself, there is probably a fellowship which will appeal to you and could eventually act as an introduction to Rotary itself. To learn more Telephone David 01473 827226 or visit the Rotary Club of Hadleigh website. You will also be welcome at one of our coffee mornings which are held monthly at Cobblers.

Thank You

A big thank you to all those that fished for the John Bryant Memorial Cup, raising £370 for St Elizabeth Hospice. My family and myself are more than grateful.

Parish Council

Below are the main matters discussed during the Annual General Meeting of the council on 24 May 2023.

• Election of chairman and officers Charlotte Britton, the outgoing Chairman, opened the meeting and invited nominations for the position of Chairman. Cllr Steve Laing was elected Chairman; Cllr John Curran was elected Vice-Chairman. All councillors duly signed Declaration of Acceptance of Office forms.

• District Council Cllr Ward gave a verbal update. Following the recent elections, when no party had achieved an overall majority, the Greens, Independents and Liberal Democrat groups had formed a coalition administration for the next four years and had agreed on a rotating leadership; the Lib Dems would provide the leader for the first year, with Cllr David Busby being elected. Cllr Deborah Saw (Green) and JW (Independent) were elected as the coalition’s deputy leaders. The Green party, which had won the most seats, would provide the leader for the second and fourth years, with Cllr Ward leader for the third year.

• County Council Cllr Hall confirmed that Layham was next in line for inclusion in the ANPR trial, probably in July. With regard to improvements to the footpath along the B1070 between Upper Layham and Hadleigh, some work had been carried in March; Cllr Hall would check whether further work was planned over the summer.

• Defibrillator for Stoke Road The defibrillator had been delivered and installed. The Clerk had been advised by BDC that ‘Cobblers Corner’ was known as a ‘locality’ rather than an official address and so was not eligible for a street sign, although the PC could request a sign saying Stoke Road.

• Co-option

Following the recent elections, the PC had two vacant seats. Information would be circulated via the community email, Hadleigh Community News and on the website.

• Emergency Plan As soon as the council was up to full strength following co-options, the communications tree would be reviewed.

• Planning Councillors asked the Clerk to write to Babergh expressing their disappointment that many decisions did not appear to take the PC’s comments into consideration.

• General Power of Competence The General Power of Competence gave local councils in England ‘the power to do anything that individuals generally may do’ and removed the need for councils to ask whether they had a specific power to act. Layham met the criteria, having a qualified Clerk and two-thirds elected members. It was agreed to renew the General Power of Competence for 2023/24.

• Dog bin outside the Queen’s Head The plastic liner in the dog refuse bin near the Queen’s Head had been reported missing; the Clerk had ordered a replacement.

The newly elected members of the Parish Council Your Parish Councillors are John Curran (Vice-Chairman); Will Dunn; Sue Keeble; Steve Laing (Chairman) and Sheila Roberts. Our Parish Clerk is Jane Cryer.

Layham Parish Council Vacancies

Following the recent elections, the PC has two Councillor vacancies. Parish Councils are the first tier of local government in England and Wales and are closest to the people. Parish Councillors have two main responsibilities: representing the whole electorate within the parish and striving to improve quality of life in the parish. They can influence many things by working in partnership with the District Council and the County Council. District and County Councillors attend most of our meetings, which are held monthly (with the exception of December).

The Parish Council is an effective way to get involved in community life. Parish Councillors are elected by the public or co-opted by the other councillors and serve time and commitment and a willingness to undertake training courses. Layham Parish Council does not pay allowances, but covers expenses incurred.

We encourage applications from anyone who meets the eligibility criteria. Having Councillors from different backgrounds, with different skills, attitudes and interests, helps us work better as a team. The following list of skills, knowledge and experience might help you decide whether to apply:

• knowledge and understanding of your local community;

• a keen interest in local matters;

• ability and willingness to represent the Council and the community;

• ability and willingness to work closely with other members of the Council and to maintain good working relationships with members and staff;

• ability to clearly communicate orally and in writing;

• willingness to get actively involved in community affairs;

• good reasoning and decision making skills.

Applicants must be over 18 years of age and must meet at least one of the following requirements:

• be registered as a local government elector for the parish;

• have occupied land or other premises in the parish for at least 12 months;

• have worked in the parish for at least 12 months (principal or only place of work);

• have resided in or within 3 miles of the parish for at least twelve months. If you are interested, please write to or email the Parish Clerk, Jane Cryer (07920 713940, layhampc@gmail.com), stating why you would like to join the PC and giving details of any relevant experience and what you feel you could bring to the role. The PC will use your information to assess your suitability; applicants may be invited to meet Parish Council members for an informal discussion.

Calling keen gardeners We have a vacant allotment available - if you are interested, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk, on 07920 713940, or email layhampc@gmail.com. Annual rent is £10, plus one-sixth of any water bills.

Layham Village Hall Regular groups meeting at the hall: Social Club alternate Monday mornings often with a guest speaker; Ladybirds Toddler Group Tuesday mornings a very friendly group of mothers/grandmothers and toddlers; Yoga class Tuesday afternoon; Children’s dance classes Tuesday evening; Pilates Friday evening this is a new group and is already proving extremely popular. For booking please contact rosey.emma@btinternet.com and for general information phone Jan McNelly 01473-871043.

You can visit Layham Village Hall webpage on the Layham Parish Council website to view facilities.

Social Club Social Club continues to thrive. The last speaker Pat Hodgkins of the National Trust gave a most informative talk about Constable, the man and his paintings enjoyed by about 30 people. Pat referred to circulated maps of Flatford and discussed Valley Farm, Willie Lott’s House and Flatford Mill, connecting Constable and his early life with each place. Pat gave vivid depictions of the life and times of Constable linked to his sketches of everyday scenes and a selection of his paintings. The lively, interactive talk contained many questions that stimulated interest in John Constable’s works and the lifestyle in Suffolk at that time.

Next month’s talk is on July 3 at Layham Village Hall at the usual time – 10 am to 12 pm and includes refreshments. All welcome. A small charge of £2 to cover hire of hall. We welcome Father Jo as our speaker so prepare to be entertained!

Grants available from Layham Events Group In 2022 we were able to invite applications for small grants - we are pleased to announce that we are now launching a new round of applications. The grants are available to local organisations, groups or individuals – for further details and an application form, please see the website (www.layham.org). The closing date for applications is Friday 28 July 2023.

Goodbye to our ‘postie’ After 15 years serving the people of Layham, Jody Pemberton is moving on to Clacton (which is where he lives). He leaves with our best wishes – we will miss his cheerful helpfulness.

Above the Parapet

The Armed Forces Covenant

I am proud of the fact that I spent most of my adult life serving in the Army and I am grateful to play an active part in Hadleigh’s Armed Forces community of veterans and current serving members. One of my responsibilities is being the Armed Forces Champion for Suffolk County Council where I sit on its Covenant Board.

Report

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, along with their families, should be treated fairly. It is a promise that they should not be disadvantaged because of their service and it is a recognition of the sacrifices they make on our behalf. It puts a legal obligation on certain local public organisations, to require them to pay due regard to the Covenant and its principles, focussing on the key areas of healthcare, education and housing.

Suffolk’s Covenant Board has had several successes in holding councils to account on their covenant pledges, including the resolution of some housing and school placement issues of service families. In one case, children of service personnel quartered at Wattisham Flying Station were denied use schools transport as Ringshall Primary School is within the 2-mile walking limit. This walk is either along a 60mph open road with no pavement, or on a footpath crossing a ploughed field without lighting and which is impassable for pushchairs for most of the year. We challenged Suffolk CC over this and won the argument, meaning that now parents can apply for transport for their children as appropriate.

In Hadleigh, the RBL Branch Chairman brought to my attention the plight of 97year-old WW2 veteran Harry Hughes. Harry was struggling with the stairs and bathroom arrangements of his council owned home. The legion had asked Babergh on Harry’s behalf to see whether a well-needed stairlift and a shower in place of the bath could be installed for him. Initially, the council stated that this would take more than a year due to the waiting list for works. We intervened and asked the council to review Harry’s case because of the effect on his wellbeing, health and of his service history. I had to congratulate Babergh for reconsidering his situation after they installed the stair lift a few weeks later, and for the new bathroom suite which followed shortly after that.

Service Pupil Premium – May I advise that service personnel with children (reception to year 11) in state schools in England should notify schools of their children’s service status to ensure they are recorded prior to the next autumn census (first Thursday in October) in order to qualify for Service pupil premium. This additional Government funding is designed to assist the school in providing the additional support that your children may need and is currently worth £335 per Service child who meets the eligibility criteria.

Councillor Surgery I hold my surgery on the third Saturday of the month with the next being at 11:00 on Saturday 19th August 2023 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street.

News From St Mary’s School

As the weather has warmed up, there have been lots of things going on at St Mary’s! Eco Club have been busy creating a bug hotel for the school field. The children collected leaves, stones, pine cones and sticks. Our year 6 head boys and girls were really helpful with supervising the younger children and carrying the heavier items. Great job Eco Club!

‘Discovery at the Deanery’ is our school in the woods and the children in the Early Years and Year 1 have been visiting regularly. They have enjoying a range of activities, including den building, “dandy” lion making, hammock swinging, ladder climbing, bow and arrow firing and wild flower planting. The children had a go at making ‘smell cocktails’ using things we found in the woods and some special ingredients from the herb garden and they had a cocktail party and cake to celebrate the birthday of our wonderful friend Grasshopper Girling! The children have been visited by a new friend, a very jumpy squirrel they named Steve.

We had a fabulous afternoon in the education tent at the Hadleigh Show. Many thanks to all those involved in organising this huge community event. It was lovely to see so many people admiring the artwork from all the local children. Well done to all the children across St Mary’s School for getting two 3rd place awards and a 5th place award in the art competition. Mrs Coghill’s amazing forest animal masks were very popular! It was great to see lots of children walking around the Show with their animal masks on! We had the pleasure of taking 6 energetic year 4 girls to a fun football festival at Ipswich Town football club! We had a great afternoon, full of smiles and lots of tackling! The girls’ attitude and teamwork were awesome and they are real role models for other pupils. Well done to our amazing Year 6s for completing their SATs Week. The children have worked so hard in the lead up and have done themselves proud, trying their best and displaying a positive attitude. It was fantastic to all gather for some morning exercise and fun every day during the week. The children relaxed, smiled and supported each other while enjoying some extra breakfast in the sun. Many thanks to the Friends of St Mary’s School for funding the breakfast treats. Also, a huge thank you to Mrs Harvey for all her fun ideas and her energetic motivation alongside other helpful volunteers.

Today Year 3 and our Year 6 Heads and Deputy Heads went to Hadleigh Hall to celebrate a resident's 108th Birthday Celebration. The children sang Happy Birthday beautifully and presented birthday cards that the whole school had made. The children really made Bunny's afternoon, and the other residents we saw were thrilled to meet our pupils too! Bunny talked to the children about her life in the past, which was fascinating to find out about. All of our children were respectful and represented St Marys brilliantly; they should all feel very proud of themselves.

week. We drew, iced biscuits and sang together! We had a lovely time and so did our new friends. The children will visit the residents again soon!

Our Coronation celebrations at school were really exciting! The children enjoyed a special day of biscuit decorating, hat making and cake! A special thank you to Mrs King for making our delicious cakes! Our whole-school picnic was disturbed by the weather but everyone gathered in the hall and had a lovely time.

The whole of Key Stage 2 participated in our Spring Slam times tables competition over the course of a month. This involved 4 rounds of ever increasingly difficult times tables questions. The Grand Slam final saw 14 finalists complete a further 2 rounds for the titles of Grand Slam Champion. Congratulations to both our Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2 champions. They were so speedy with their times tables and it was a magnificent achievement.

Year 4 really enjoyed their visit to Hadleigh Library. They enjoyed looking at the books and more children now have a library card that they can use to borrow the lovely books on offer. The children were really polite and respectful of the library, the books and the librarians. Many thanks for the help from the librarians and the lovely welcome they gave us.

April is the month dedicated to Military Children. At St Mary's, we showed our support for Military Children throughout April and dedicated Friday 21st April as a dress down day. We encourage the children to come to school wearing something purple, as this is the colour of the "Military Child", and we raised money for SSAFA, who provide vital support to military personnel and their families. We were also very lucky to have two visitors – WO2 Mills and Lance Corporal Fisher, who conducted a special assembly for Military Child Month. The children enjoyed learning about different aspects of the military and watching their friends have a race getting into a special protective suit. We were also set a creative challenge to design an item for the soldiers in the Hacker Space at Wattisham Flying Station to make using their amazing 3D printers – it’s a great project to fire the children’s imaginations. Thank you to our visitors and to all the children for getting involved and celebrating Military Child Month!

Twelve members of Chestnut class spent two days cycling around the roads in Hadleigh completing Bike-Ability! They all had a great time and enjoyed learning how to ride their bikes safely. From road safety to bicycle maintenance, this is a really valuable course. Many thanks to their amazing instructors and our staff cycling expert Mrs Morris for supporting them. Our Code Club is now really well established. The children have been really engaged and are enjoying learning new skills. A huge thank-you to Mr Blows for showing the children how to begin coding a game using Scratch. It’s amazing to see what the children can achieve – the games and stories are really exciting to see. Soon the children will begin learning to code with Python as well.

Help your child grow from ‘seedling’ to ‘sapling’ at our new toddler sessions! Enjoy a chance to meet other parents with toddler aged children in a warm, relaxed and safe environment. Children can explore our nursery classroom and courtyard area; a place for messy play including sand and water and a fabulous mud kitchen!

We look forward to seeing you from 9:00am - 10:00am and 2:30pm - 3:15pm on Mondays to Thursdays. Please contact the school for further information.

A fine view of Toppesfield Mill standing astride the River Brett and which provided the power to turn the great millstones to produce flour. This mill was destroyed by fire one February day in 1954. Some still remember the event which during the late afternoon saw dense smoke drift low across Benton Street causing visibility problems. School children finishing their lessons for the day hurried down Tinkers Lane via Toppesfield Bridge to watch the great fire. The damage was severe, and the mill was never to work again. Memories of the old mill were recently revived when a sink hole appeared partly revealing the water wheel. For some two years unsightly metal barriers surrounded the site and the popular footpath over footbridge to Tinkers Lane was closed. Now at last, happily the area has been back-filled, grass sown, and a simple wood fence positioned, and Tinkers Lane is once again passable for its whole length. The photograph taken from the downstream side, prominently shows a pedal cycle, perhaps belonging to the photographer? Also, just visible outside the mill is a horse-drawn tumbril either delivering or making a collection from the substantial mill. The mill wheel which was exposed recently was located at the arched brickwork showing left of centre. Image reference: CB 293

Starbucks planning application, Weavers Meadow

You might be aware that a planning application has been made to build a Starbucks drive-through facility on the land between Weavers Meadow and the A1071 Ipswich Road, accessed via Ellen Aldous Avenue. The deadline for lodging comments via Babergh’s online planning search & comment page has passed, but you can still make your views on the proposal known by contacting the Chief Planning Officer, Philip Isbell, using the email address Philip.Isbell@babergh.gov.uk, or sending a letter to the Chief Planning Officer, Babergh District Council, Endeavour House, 8 Russell Road, Ipswich IP1 2BX. Be sure to quote the case reference numbers DC/23/01962 and DC/23/01963.

More eV chargers coming to Hadleigh

The new cabinet member for Environment, Daniel Potter (Greens), has approved plans for installing more electric vehicle (eV) chargers in the long stay section of Magdalen Road car park in Hadleigh. Additional chargers will also be installed in Lavenham (The Cock Horse Inn car park) and in Sudbury (Girling Street and North Street car parks).

New council leaders and cabinet confirmed at Babergh

An alliance of Green, Lib Dem and Independent councillors will jointly lead Babergh District Council for the next four years. In an arrangement possibly unique in the country, the Lib Dems will provide the council leader in Year 1, the Greens in Years 2 and 4, and the Independents in Year 3. Council chair and vice chair positions will also rotate between the groups. Cabinet places have been shared, with the Greens taking on four portfolios, the Independents three, and the Lib Dems one.

March 2023 round of CIL funding announced – do you have a project that might qualify? More than £500,000 collected from developers in Mid Suffolk and Babergh is going back to communities in the two districts in the latest round of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) bids. A total of 11 bids are receiving support for community projects, including three £100,000 contributions – which means new play facilities, improvements to health centres, additional pedestrian routes, disability parking spaces and village halls, thanks to CIL payments which are a legal requirement paid by developers of residential sites across the districts. If you have a local project in mind that could qualify for CIL funding, contact Jane (Hadleigh South) or Simon (Hadleigh North) and we’ll talk it through with you.

Making local homes more energy-efficient – could you be eligible?

Over the next three years, more Suffolk homes will be upgraded to improve their energy efficiency, helping to reduce residents’ energy bills. A joint bid by Suffolk’s local authorities, including Babergh District Council, will see £8.6m come into the county as part of the Government’s Home Upgrade Grant (HUG). Eligible households will benefit from improvements such as insulation, low carbon air source heat pumps, or solar panels. Homes that are eligible will include those that:

• are low income (household income less than £31,000)

• are off the gas grid (i.e. oil, solid fuel, electric or no heating)

• have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) between D and G

• are owner occupied or rented out by landlords (landlords will be expected to contribute towards the costs)

Suffolk County Council will host a new team of staff on behalf of all local authorities, who will work on identifying households, coordinating the improvements and overseeing the quality of the installations. More information is at www.warmhomessuffolk.org .

How Hadleigh’s Helped Me Through Cancer

12 months on from being diagnosed with Myeloma (a rare form of blood cancer) my first year of treatment is coming to an end. I’ve had 26 rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant and we’re hopeful that ongoing treatment will keep the cancer at bay for as long as possible.

As a family we’re grateful for all of the support we’ve had from people in Hadleigh, including family, friends and neighbours, Hadleigh High School, Hadleigh United FC and Hadleigh Health Centre. Hadleigh is a lovely place to live and the lifts to health appointments, doorstep gifts, uplifting messages and ongoing encouragement have all helped massively.

The NHS has been amazing with the physical side of things, but the emotional side is less straight forward. Thankfully, I was introduced to a small local charity based in both Ipswich & Colchester Hospital which provides rapid counselling to ‘young’ people under 45 years with a life limiting illness.

The counselling is as valuable as all the physical treatment I’ve received. It’s true that you never think it will happen to you, I never thought it would happen to me, so I’d love to help Ending Life’s Taboo by raising funds to help them help more people with life limiting conditions. You can read my story and make a donation to this small local charity here https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-me-kick-cancers-arse-to-the-kerb or scan the QR code. Thanks again for your support.

Hadleigh Evening WI

We are presently planning our July Garden Party when we hope the weather will be kind but perhaps not as kind as in 2022 which was on the hottest day in the year! Nevertheless, it was a great success. We are in a group of five WIs and will be welcoming members from the other four groups.

Bookworms June book was Sheila Hancock's autobiography Old Rage. We are currently reading Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus. The Lunch Bunch will be venturing further afield to Pin Mill and the Amblers are going to Felixtowe - we had cancel the last planned visit due to severely inclement weather, so fingers crossed for this second attempt. The visit to Huntingfield was a very great success. The church is exceedingly beautiful and the welcome from the churchwarden both informative and friendly. The meal at the Huntingfield Arms was beautifully cooked, with yet another warm welcome and exceedingly good value - e.g. a cordial was only 50p! I think Huntingfield could go on the national list of friendly places to visit. In June we looked forward to a visitor from Benton End Flower Farm. We meet on the third Tuesday evening in the Seminar Room of the Library at 7.30pm. If you think you might like to join us, come for a 'taster' evening by telephoning either Glenn Abbassi the Secretary on 07870 312409 or Sheila Webb the President on 01473 827554 and we will look out for you - our next open evening is on Tuesday 15th August.

Beaumont’s Birthday Bash

2023 marks 20 years since the opening of Beaumont Community Primary School. To celebrate the occasion the school is holding an Anniversary Fete on Wednesday 19th July, 1pm-4pm on the school field. We are keen to hear from anyone with memories of the school. Were you one of the first intake of pupils? What do you remember about the new school? Do you have any photographs you could share with us?

Please get in touch with your stories and photos by sending them to admin@beaumontschool.suffolk.sch.uk and don’t forget to join us on the day.

The Gareth Meredith Memorial Walk

The Gareth Meredith Memorial Walk will take place at 10.30 am on Sunday 16th July. Parents, Alan and Beryl Meredith, invite you to join them on this picturesque, well signed walk in memory of their late son, Gareth, who loved walking. The walk, which is 5½ miles long, will start at the Boxford Medical Centre and finish at the Hadleigh Health Centre. Families and dogs are most welcome. All walkers participate at their own risk and are kindly asked to respect the countryside along the way. Parking at Boxford is limited. There is no sign-up fee, but a voluntary donation would be very much appreciated. The money will go towards an infrared vein finder for the newly created Phlebotomy Unit at the Hadleigh Practice.

The 68th Burstall Flower Show, Fete and Fun Dog Show

Will be held on SATURDAY 5th AUGUST 2023 at Burstall Village Hall and Green, IP8 3DR.

The Burstall Flower Show began in 1953 and whilst it has retained many of the ever popular traditional elements – Marquee full of flowers, produce and craft, the Sideshows, Coconut Shy, Bottle Tombola and lots of delicious Homemade Cake, we are pleased to confirm that the bowling for a pig and the goat show have gone and been replaced by a trendy Fun Dog Show. A Beer and Prosecco Tent was last year’s innovation and proved a great accompaniment to the Barbecue of Oak Farm bangers and burgers. With musical entertainment from West Wind, a selection of craft stalls to browse and interesting vehicles to view, we really feel we can truly offer something to suit all, so please spread the word, come along yourselves, bring family and friends, and help to make Burstall’s 68th Show a resounding success.

The Barbecue and Beer will be available from noon, the Flower Show opens at 1.00pm, Sideshows at 2.00pm,and Dog Show at 3.00pm, (registration for the dog show between 1.30 and 2.30 pm) with Tug of War, Whacky Races and musical entertainment in between. Tea, scones and cake will be served in the Village Hall and Ice Creams from the Pavilion all afternoon. As ever, Entry and Parking are absolutely FREE.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG)

Much to everyone’s relief the massive face-lift at the Practice is finally complete and the pleasing outcome has made it all worthwhile. Thanks to staff, patients, builders, visitors and the benevolent landlord for their patience throughout the entire refurbishment period. Happily, the newly installed picture rails in the main Waiting Room area will enable us to display a greater number of art works than before. Our thanks to Jon Revell and the students of Hadleigh High School for agreeing to be our first exhibitors.

The re-organisation has resulted in the creation of a designated Phlebotomy Room which will be ready for use in a few weeks’ time. The newly acquired equipment will make blood taking much easier for patients and Phlebotomists alike. The infrared vein finder will be funded by Beryl and Peter Meredith in memory of their late son Gareth. The specialist chair has been funded by members of the ladies’ Fidelis Group. Sincere thanks to both for their generous contributions making the acquisition of these valuable pieces of equipment possible.

Beryl and Alan Meredith’s Memorial, walk in memory of their late son Gareth, has been carefully planned from the start at the Boxford Practice to the finish at the Hadleigh Health Centre. It will take place at 10a.m on Sunday 16th July and take walkers, with clear signage, cross country for 5½ miles. Families and pets are most welcome, but you do walk at your own risk. You will also be responsible for your own transport arrangements. Parking at Boxford is limited. There is no sign-up fee but a voluntary donation will be possible. This will go towards the infrared vein finder mentioned above. Everyone is welcome so why not come and enjoy this leisurely walk in beautiful countryside?

“Ninety per cent of the diseases known to man are caused by cheap foodstuffs. You are what you eat." Amazingly this sentence has been around, initially in other languages, since 1826. It has been in and out of public consciousness ever since. More recently Panorama on BBC One aired a well-researched documentary investigating the link between processed food and physical and mental health. The findings were shocking and disturbing and will be difficult to ignore. You can take advantage of BBC iPlayer to watch “Ultra-Processed Food: A Recipe for Ill Health? “or visit www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001mp67

Another friendly reminder; the Practice is not responsible for Mill Pharmacy. Patients are kindly requested not to call the Health Centre with any queries or questions they may have about that chemist.

We had perfect weather for lazing in the sun last month but a chap can’t relax with all that tweeting going on. Not the volunteers, they don’t have time to look at their mobile phones! I was worried about a little bird constantly calling until Mum told me to leave it alone.

Apparently, it is normal for a fledgling to spend time on the ground whilst learning to fly. If you see one, observe it discreetly, return it to the nest or place it on a branch away from predators. If it is injured, call the nearest wild life rescue otherwise wait for the parents who may be nearby waiting to feed it. I also saw bees in the garden which prompted one of the girls to say: a swarm in May is worth a load of hay, in June it’s worth a silver spoon but July is not worth a fly!

Hay was on the menu for the many rabbits we have, including two and a half year old sisters, Millie and Billie. They have been with us for a long time because they had territorial issues on arrival. Since moving into larger accommodation they have become more sociable and like to ‘help’ on cleaning out days! They are very fond of each other and sit together, watching the world go by.

If you are looking for a new pet please visit us, 10am-1pm, Thursday to Sunday. Animals bring so much joy to families and those living alone. Some even rule the roost like me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.

Hadleigh Community Primary School

Year 5 Singing Day On the 16th May we welcomed Year 5 pupils from Elmsett, Bildeston, Hintlesham and Kersey primary schools to join our Year 5s in a singing day. The children worked with Mr Betts and Mrs Ragan to learn some important skills to support their singing, while learning and performing some songs.

Music Concert On the 23rd and 24th of May we held our annual music concert. Pupils from Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 performed a varied and entertaining programme to enthusiastic audiences. The event was peppered with solo and small ensemble numbers, alongside performances from our ukulele groups, wind group, musical theatre group, violin club and choir. The concerts ended with a finale song performed by all of the pupils in the concert (over 120 of them!)

Year 3 Musical Maths Day On Wednesday 24th May, pupils in year 3 had a fab day working with Joe and Sue from Britten Pears Arts on a 'Musical Maths Day'. They worked with fractions, coordinates, shapes, repeating patterns and estimating distances and linked all of it to music! Gardening Club Gardening Club have planted up a herb bed in our Peace Garden, thanks to funding from our HSA. They also planted wildflower seeds that were sent to commemorate the King’s Coronation. The Peace Rose that we planted when the garden was created is on bloom for the first time! Thanks again to all the members of the community who helped in any way to create our Peace Garden, a beautiful space for children to listen to a story, especially in this hot weather!

Happy Anniversary

I would like to wish my Husband Tony Davey of Gallows Hill, Hadleigh a very Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary on July 14th. Looking forward to a nice day with you and many more to come.

Hadleigh Cricket Club

As we approach the half-way point of the season, the weather has finally caught up with the calendar, and we have enjoyed some glorious sunny and warm afternoons at Friars Road.

The 1st XI are currently sitting 3rd in Division 1 of the Two Counties League, with just 5 points between them and the top spot. Their top run scorer is our Overseas coach and player Kudzai Maunze with 331 runs, with Dominic Manthorpe leading the bowlers with 15 wickets.

The 2’s are sitting 4th in Division 4. New signing Lovejeet Singh is leading the way with 233 runs scored, and it is fantastic to see the junior players coming through with youngster Jack Auld picking up 7 wickets.

Our Sunday Academy XI are flying high in Division 2 of the Hunts County League, unbeaten at the time of writing. Top run-scorer is Nirav Tailor, racking up 211 with Oliver Clark taking 6 wickets - impressive given that he has only played 2 games having just returned from Uni.

The ladies team have only played 1 game thus far - not quite reaching the required run rate against East Bergholt, but proudly fielding no less than 3 mother-daughter pairings for their match, and clearing demonstrating our philosophy of ‘A Community Club for All the Family’.

The weekend of 20/21 May saw an achievement that to our knowledge has not been achieved before at Hadleigh CC - 2 hundreds scored in a weekend, earning Lovejeet Singh the accolade of Player of the Month for May.

Off the field, the deck is proving popular with spectators and it has been a pleasure to welcome new faces to the club as well as seasoned supporters. Our range of bar snacks is also proving extremely popular, keeping our volunteers busy every weekend! It was a pleasure to participate in the Town Council’s What’s About Hadleigh event to promote the club and its facilities to the wider community, meeting residents of the town as well as other groups; and on 28 May we welcomed the Hadleigh Houndwalkers for refreshments after their Sunday meet up!

Coming up, we have karaoke on 8th July, and a Race Night on 22 July. Keep your eye on our social media pages for updates on and off the field!

We look forward to welcoming you to Friars Road soon, whether just popping by for a quick refreshment on a walk, as a spectator or enjoying one of our social events!

Hadleigh Walkers

Our July walk will take place on Saturday 8th and is a circular walk of 8 miles starting in Gt Blakenham. We will park by the village hall at the bottom of the lane clearly signposted opposite the Curry Restaurant IP6 0NJ and depart as usual at 0930. The walk will head North along the Gipping River Path to just beyond Pipps Ford, then to Rose Fm in Darmsden, Baylham Church, Walnut Tree Fm and then back to Gt Blakenham via Chalk Hill Lane. We will have a refreshment stop and at our usual walking rate of 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) we should be back at around 1300. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places at any time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site.

For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, We can be emailed via the website or contact Mike Keeling on 07483 887658

Thankyou Trevor...

On behalf of the committee select, we would like to thank Trevor Clarke who has made the decision to step down as Chairman from Hadleigh Amateur Dramatic Society. Having been a member of HADs since the age of 14 and taking on the role of Chairman 10+ years ago, he has worked tirelessly to ensure that HADs has been a fun, welcoming, and safe environment to all those who joined the HADs family along the way. We would like to thank Trevor for his hard work and dedication to the committee. We truly appreciate all of the time and effort Trevor put in to the society over the past years and his commitment has been instrumental to ensure HADs can continue to put on shows each year. Being a leader is not the easiest task in the world, however, Trevor has lead the committee greatly over the years and we write this to express our gratitude for everything he has done. We hope to continue Trevor’s hard work for the foreseeable future and we wish him well in his committee retirement duties.

All the best, HADS Committee and Society Members
