Rotary Review SANTA SPECIAL : The Rotary Christmas Collections will soon be upon us. Father Christmas together with his float will follow the regular routes around Hadleigh and this year, weather permitting, we hope to include Weavers Meadow. There will be two appearances at Morrisons as well. Santa will visit your door if you wish but will keep his distance whilst talking to the children and we do ask you to remain at your door rather than gathering in groups on the pavement. Similar rules will apply at Morrisons when Santa is meeting the children. We realise that money is still tight for many of us but if you do have a little small change to spare when we call it will help us help your local charities which still need all the support you can give. In addition, this year, we hope to have a card reader available to make it even easier to donate. The routes and times in December are as follows: Thursday 14th: Matilda Groome Road and Weavers Meadow 5.30 - 7.45pm approx. Friday 15th: Morrisons Car Park 10.00am – 3.00pm approx. Monday 18th: Malyon Drive and Oxford Drive 5.30 – 7.45pm approx. Tuesday 19th: Edwin Panks Road to Yeoman Crescent 5.30 – 7.45pm approx. Wednesday 20th: Aldham Road to Pykenham Way 5.30 – 7.45pm approx. Thursday 21st: Clopton Gardens, Wilson Rd, Highlands Rd, Gaell Crescent 5.30 – 7.45pm approx. Friday 22nd: Morrisons Car Park 10.00am – 3.00pm approx We look forward to seeing you on the rounds but should it be necessary to cancel collections for any reason please accept our sincere apologies in advance. Finally your cooperation in leaving enough room for the float to pass along the road would be much appreciated. CHRISTMAS FLOAT UPDATE: There was a terrific response to the appeal for sponsors in the last issue and the club now has ample funds to carry all the repairs necessary. Very grateful thanks go to HADLEIGH TYRES LTD, REJB SPORTS SERVICES LTD, HADLEIGH NEWS LTD, PLANT PARTS LTD, BROOKS & WOOD LTD and ROTARIAN B CHAPLIN for their tremendous generosity. REJB Sports Services donation was given in memory of Reg Brazier, founder of the company and a Rotarian in the early days of this club who was very much involved in the creation of this float. The repairs are progressing well and two new reindeer have been rounded up and are residing comfortably in a garage somewhere in Hadleigh waiting to be harnessed to the float. The club is indebted to its President who has so far carried out virtually all the work single handedly. Here it is stripped down to basics and the rebuild has begun. CLUB NEWS: 1. The club is now holding all its regular meetings at Cobblers High Street Hadleigh and there will be more news about this in the New Year. 2. The club was represented at the Remembrance Day Parade and President, Graham Parker, laid a wreath on behalf of the club at the War Memorial. 3. During the Christmas Period members look forward to the usual coffee meeting at Cobblers, a special Christmas Lunch with partners and friends at Hintlesham Golf Club, Coffee and mince pies with partners and friends at Cobblers and to round things off a New Year Champagne Brunch with partners at The George, Hintlesham early in January. President Graham and Members wish all readers a Happy Christmas and a healthy, more prosperous New Year.

Festive Christmas Concert After the fantastic "Hadleigh Last Night of the Proms", Hadleigh Orchestra and Hadleigh Community Choir are joining together again to bring you a festive Christmas Concert on Sunday 3rd December 4pm at St Mary's Church, Hadleigh. Music will include Handel’s Water Music, Venus, the Bringer of Peace from Holst's Planets Suite, Orff's O Fortuna from Carmina Burana, and Berlioz' Shepherd's Farewell. We will have Christmas favourites in Leroy Andeson's A Christmas Festival - see how many Christmas Carols you can spot! There will, of course, be plenty of opportunity for the audience to join us singing Christmas Carols. Donations are being given to "PAWS Crossed", a small Colchester-based charity that cares for and rehouses abandoned dogs, and relies entirely on charitable giving to cover all costs. We do hope you can join us for another fun musical afternoon.

Hadleigh and District Flower Club held there Christmas meeting this month at Copdock Village Hall, attended by over 100 people. The evening began with a minutes silence to remember our President and founder member Joan Mariner who sadly passed away last month. The demonstrator for our meeting was Coral Gardiner,a farmers wife from Bath. She did some wonderful arrangements depicting her title “Country Christmas”. All the designs were very different but gave us all a feeling of the country and Christmas. She told us lots of stories of being a farmer’s wife and her claim to fame was being on Country File making wreaths on her farm and also doing a pedestal at Westminster for Prince Philip’s memorial service. We all had a most enjoyable evening finishing with coffee and refreshments. Our next meeting will be back at the URC on December 12th, when we welcome Elizabeth Robertson from Cambridgeshire to demonstrate. Look forward to seeing you all for a drink and mince pies.

Outstanding-rated charity Headway Suffolk has opened a new Satellite Rehab Hub in Hadleigh for people living with brain injury or a neurological condition. The outreach service will be open on the first Friday from of the month,10am 12 noon at Hadleigh Library in the High Street. It is very much hoped that it will soon develop into a weekly session. It will include a range of activities designed to help each individual with their rehabilitation needs and provide an opportunity to meet others in a safe and stimulating environment. It will also provide valuable respite for family carers knowing their loved one is being safely cared for. The next session is 8th December 2023 The hub opened in October with participants taking part in an understanding brain injury course. Helen Fairweather, CEO of Headway Suffolk, said: “We are very pleased to have launched our first satellite hub in Hadleigh and hope our service can grow so we can support more people in the town. “There’s lots of people out there who need our help. We had successful satellite hubs before Covid, which were small groups of 8-10, and they really helped people to progress. “We were sad we had to close them because of the pandemic but now is the right time to reopen them to help more people. “A lot of day centres closed during Covid so there’s a gap in the service and we hope people who used to go to them services contact us.” In September 2022, it was rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, with Louise Broddle, CQC head of Adult Social Care Inspection, saying “Headway Suffolk is clearly an important part of the community and other services can look to it as an example of how to deliver outstanding care and support.” Anyone interested in attending the Hadleigh satellite hub or registering their interest for groups in other towns should contact Helen Fairweather on 01473 712225 or helenmfairweather@headwaysuffolk.org.uk To find out more, go to www.headwaysuffolk.org.uk/satellites Headway Suffolk is a registered charity that supports adults living with brain injury, stroke and neurological conditions through an extensive range of rehabilitation, therapy and care services.

Hadleigh Hits the Heights Does a 30% increase in population qualify Hadleigh as the fastest growing town in England? The current Hadleigh Town Councillors, the staff and volunteers are to be congratulated in getting the long-awaited Neighbourhood Plan (‘NP’) close to the finishing line. The final public consultation on the draft plan is underway. It closes on 17th December 2023. I suspect few Hadleigh residents will find time to read all the 47 documents attached to the 84 page draft plan. But they should. One fact identified in the Babergh SHELAA – Hadleigh Excerpt is the 1,171 new dwellings for which planning permission has already been granted. Many are already under construction. In the HTC letter sent to residents / business owners we are informed that the Neighbourhood Plan cannot comment on any building already started, such as Weavers Meadow and Rose Manor. However, the impact of the influx of the estimated 2,810 new residents in already planned developments does need to be considered. The 2021 Census showed the population of Hadleigh as 8764. What will be the impact of more than a 30% increase, in the next few years, be on the schools, the surgery, roads, pavements, sports facilities and the commercial and leisure environment? Will the final Neighbourhood Plan address all these issues? Now, thanks to the Localism Act 2011, private individuals, without time to engage in local politics, can help influence local decisions and policies. If you care about Hadleigh’s future you, or your local active groups, should contribute to the Neighbourhood Plan.Hadleigh needs your input, NOW. Roger Young

Dead Man Painting: The Art of Murder Brett Valley Collective would like to thank everyone who ventured out to attend their most recent performance. Their third selfpenned play, Dead Man Painting: The Art of Murder, was their first foray into the genre of Murder Mystery. It was written by Rachel Bennett, John Lovett and Jonathan Moore, with additional material by the rest of the talented cast. A group of unlikely characters were invited to a secluded country house in the middle of nowhere for a private viewing of esteemed artist Lucien Masters’ latest work. Some called it a renaissance, others were not so impressed… The weather was treacherous, the mood was tense and the atmosphere strained as they waited for their host to arrive… Why would anyone choose to exhibit in such a remote setting, and how did the gathered guests really feel about their host and each other? As the weather rapidly deteriorated, tempers rose and nerves frayed, the evening took an unexpected deadly turn and a police inspector was called upon to investigate… BVC would like to thank the generous individuals and local businesses for their very kind donations of raffle prizes. They would also like to thank The Little Ginger Bee Co. for very kindly selling tickets, and a massive thank you to Jacob Moore for operating the lighting and sound. Massive thanks also to our amazing Front of House team; the Ansell Community Centre Trust for the stage; the Scouts for the lights and speakers; Avis Print for the programmes; Miles and Lester for stage construction and The Hadleigh Thrift Shop for sponsorship. They remain thankful to Matthew and Ian at Hadleigh Old School for the opportunity to rehearse and perform in such an amazing space and for unwavering support. Brett Valley Collective exist under an “Art with a Heart” ethos, a central aim of their antics enables them to unite their love of performance and theatre with a charity focus. This year they supported the charity, Success After Stroke. SAS has one goal: to enhance the lives of those who have suffered from a stroke. It is their aim to work on the individual needs of each of their members, all of whom are stroke survivors, and to support their loved ones, with the philosophy that a ‘problem shared is a problem halved’. SAS began in 2001 when five stroke survivors decided to meet every week, having discovered there was little or no support for them in the outside world. These sessions became a lifeline. To find out more about the amazing work SAS do, or to make a donation, please visit www.successafterstroke.org.uk Rest assured, plans are in place for the next performance, pens are being wielded and keyboards are being clicked as we speak! The team look forward to entertaining you in 2024.

The Hadleigh Historian

The Hadleigh Historian The Hadleigh Historian

Issue 79

December 2023 - January 2024

Price £4

Issue 79 (Dec 2023 - Jan 2024) Open out the magazine's cover and you will see most of the town of Hadleigh in 1951 in an aerial view looking from the east. Since then, except for two areas, all the fields and allotment gardens shown from Station Road to Calais Street are now covered in housing. To accompany this, inside the magazine is a down-to-earth photograph in early 1950's of High Street from the west end of George Street. The magazine's contents cover aspects of the town history from the 15th to the 19th century plus a story about Aldham church in the occasional series 'Tales from our neighbours'. When Revd Dacre Barrett-Lennard came a rector in 1881, St Mary's Aldham was described 'as ruinous as a building still in use could be'. So he launched a campaign to raise funds for restoration of the medieval building and refurbishment of its interior fittings. Under the guidance of diocesan-architect William Fawcett, Hadleigh builder William Everett set about turning a ruin into a safe and comfortable place of worship. At its core, East House in George Street is probably a late medieval timberframed building, which was Georgianized in the late 18th century and had neo-Elizabethan style additions in the 19th century. It has served as a domestic dwelling, a grammar school, a home for World War II evacuees from London and a community centre. The story of 'East House and its associated lands in George Street' is set out as a timeline with Part 1 beginning in 1659 and reaching 1815. This is accompanied by short biographies of some owners and their tenants: people like Lawrence Pinchbeck, the last headmaster at Hadleigh's Grammar School held in 'The Nest', then part of the Guildhall-Town Hall Complex; and Dr Thomas Gibbons whose claims of successful treatments were doubted. Smiling faces are featured in 'Special occasions: Hadleigh wins Lavenham Junior Cup' when, in 1934, Hadleigh United Football Club was undefeated in this local tournament, achieving victory over Lavenham at the neutral ground of Danford Park in Bildeston. Like so many group photographs of the time that appeared in newspapers, individuals are not names. Can you help? Another piece from the 1930s is 'Hadleigh Medical Officer of Health's statistics from 1932 -1933'. Hadleigh Urban District Council usually appointed local general practitioners as medical officers to make inspections, to investigate medical matters affecting the town's inhabitants, to attend monthly council meetings and to submit written annual reports. Dr Hastings Everett (1875-1958) comments on birth and death rates, infectious diseases, cleanliness of food production by butchers and local farmers and the impact of poor housing on the health of the community. He concludes with the statistic that he had been notified of 560 rats having been killed in the district. The Hadleigh Historian is on sale price £4 At Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street And at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer. A one-year subscription (6 issues plus postage) costs £32 from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG (01449 740673)

Wildlife in Health Centre Although Frances Browne has lived in Suffolk all her life, the last thirty years have been in a small, remote village. Residing in this rural setting has enabled her to get close to the wildlife both in the meadows of her home and nearby rich agricultural land. Frances, who worked as an Environmental Scientist for over 40 years, has always loved wildlife and the countryside. Once her children left home she was able to concentrate on her other passion, wildlife photography. This is neither a glamorous nor speedy pastime. To capture her best photos it is not uncommon for her to get up at a silly time of day and then spend many hours sitting in cold damp ditches or prickly hedges. In her experience, the fascinating thing about photographing creatures in their natural habitat is to try and predict its habits and movement so that you can get close to your subject without disturbing its normal pattern of behaviour. You need to anticipate how it will react if it sees or smells you. No amount of expensive equipment will make up for good observational skills, endless patience and the ability to sit quietly, often uncomfortably, for hours. Although Frances is happy capturing all wildlife on camera, the shy, secretive brown hares are her favourite. Their amazing eyesight and incredible bursts of speed make them a particularly challenging subject to take. Frances exhibits and sells her work in local galleries. She has had considerable success in local and national competitions. Her work has also often graced the pages of the National Press. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy Frances’ work in the waiting area of the Hadleigh Health Centre. Wildlife enthusiasts and photography fans would truly appreciate her skill and eye for detail. Why not make someone’s Christmas or birthday very special and buy them one of her endearing works? Contact Jan Devey 01473 827091 / 07881 798999 deveys@btinternet.com 10% of the purchase price will go to the Hadleigh and Boxford Charitable Trust.

The Cock Inn An early compliments of the season from all of us at The Cock Inn. Christmas seems to start earlier every year and the weather certainly changed abruptly in mid-November and I recall seeing the gritting trucks out on around the 9th which is rather early I might add. December is a busy time for most as we make preparations for Xmas week, attend the works parties and head for the high street shops. While we do not offer the typical Xmas food fayre we do have a great range of ales, wines and spirits to make you feel better so make sure you call in after the office party or crazy trip to the bigger towns and cities. Try and support your local high street too as we have some interesting shops and watering holes on your doorstep. There is not much sport to indulge in during December as many sports take a break. F1 fans need to wait until 3rd March for the next race which will take place in Bahrain. The Abu Dhabi race was the last in 2023 and the result made no difference to Verstappen winning the drivers championship at a breeze and his team, Red Bull, winning the constructors title with Mercedes out of sight in second. While sport is sparce the Premier League is at full throttle with a record amount of games being televised thanks to Amazon Prime once again covering matches throughout the month. The TV picks are listed in our advert however there are many more games to sit back with a beer and enjoy. As I write this article Man City are back at the top with Liverpool and Arsenal joint second. Although there is quite some time remaining of this season with only 12 games played my money is again on Man City to win the league and possibly the Champions League too. Spurs seem to have fallen away somewhat and I expect that trend to continue while Newcastle have hit a doggy patch too. Will Eddie Howe see out the season? Will Ten Hag last until Xmas? Outside of the top six its starting to warm up. West Ham and Wolves are two teams to watch as they may surprise us all as the season progresses. By the way, the Wolves v Cheslea televised match on 24th December is the first Xmas eve fixture in 28 years. The VAR controversy continues with anger being vented by many managers. Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool has even asked for a game to be replayed as a consequence of poor refereeing and VAR intervention. I’m in favour of scraping VAR altogether but obviously retaining the goal line technology. There is perhaps scope to bring in some form of video assisted refereeing in the future but the authorities involved need to really think it through, train the refs to a higher level and involve past players and managers, which they have not to date done so. There is a lot at stake given the money involved in today’s football and the way VAR is currently set up, it’s perhaps not fit for purpose. The Rubby World Cup now seems like a distant memory. Congratulations again to South Africa who pipped the All Blacks to the title in what was perhaps the closest tournament in decades. England recovered from poor form pretournament to give a decent account of themselves by reaching the semi finals and the squad and new coach seem to be progressing well. Lets not mention cricket and the recent World Cup. England did not do well at all and looks like its ‘back to the drawing board’ especially when we consider that we won the previous tournament. Our calendar of live music continues through December with the ever popular 3 Steps to Heaven at our Sunday Soiree on the 3rd. We have a super band to entertain you on Saturday the 9th as SKA Town Syndicate play at The Cock Inn. The fun starts at 8.45pm but please arrive early as these folks are extremely popular with their repertoire of classic SKA music. There is music on the weekend of the 16th & 17th too. Please check us out on Facebook for further details. New Years Eve at The Cock Inn is an ‘all ticket’ event as usual. Tickets will be available from early December at the pub. Numbers are limited as we like to keep it local so please book early. There is a great DJ and buffet to enjoy with friends. Both the local dart and bar billiard leagues are under way with one of the Cock Inn’s three dart teams, The Kraken, currently top of the table. Our bar billiard team just beat last year’s Sudbury & District Bar Billiard League winners, so its looking good for them too. If you are interested in darts, bar billiards or pool, come along to the pub and join in. There is a great novice darts night every Wednesday. Our Tuesday night events are all happening in December too. Buskers on the 5th, the Quiz Night on the 12th and Open Mic with Jax Deacon on the 19th. All start at 8pm. Have a great Christmas and a prosperous and healthy New Year. The Cock Inn, 89 George Street, Hadleigh Tel 01473 941049 • Facebook: The Cock Inn Hadleigh Gang

Hadleigh Cricket Club Many people may think that cricket is a summer sport, and that everyone at Hadleigh Cricket Club is enjoying a well-earned rest during the winter months. Whilst that may be true for the majority of members, for a small number of us there is no such luck! Whether holding social events, planning for 2024 or maintaining the ground and pavilion, there is lots of behindthe-scenes work to keep the club running, all executed by a dedicated team of volunteers. By the time you read this article, the club will have held its AGM where we will review the past season and look forward to the next, including the appointment of a new Club President following the passing of Gary Girling in the summer. Social events this month include our ever-popular Christmas Party (formerly known as Cheese and Wine) on 9th December, and new for 2023 we will be hosting a familyfriendly New Year’s Eve gathering. For more details on either event, or to purchase tickets, please visit the club website www.hadleighcricketclub.com

Everyone at Hadleigh CC wishes our friends, neighbours and supporters a very Merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year!

Storm Babet Were you affected? Babet brought over 75mm of rain fall over large areas of Suffolk from Thursday night into the early hours of Friday, October 20th. An event this severe we are told has a less than 1% chance of happening in any one year. The storm resulted in more than a month’s worth of average October rainfall falling in just 24 hours. Many Hadleigh residents were affected directly and others indirectly by flooded roads, access problems etc. Several houses were flooded internally, and other residences were very closely threatened. Gardens have been badly affected by masses of debris, smallholding animals were lost to the flood and garages, sheds and their precious contents were damaged. People’s businesses were affected too. In an event like this, those affected are coming to terms with the trauma caused. They are beginning to pick up the pieces and realise that they need to be better prepared in the future for any such emergency events, not just flooding. A community response is needed working with all the agencies involved in preventing, mitigating and supporting flood events like the one we have just experienced here in Hadleigh. It has now become apparent that when storm Babet hit us, there was no understanding of which residential properties were most at risk and where potentially vulnerable people lived. The flood had an isolating effect on those affected. Common responses that hindered people’s reactions were the rapid onset of the flood event. There was disbelief, shock, fear, panic, and lack of knowledge or information. We want to support our community to be better prepared and more resilient to such future events, which will be more likely with climate change. We are setting up a Hadleigh Community Flood Action Group which will work with all the agencies. If you would like to learn more or join us then please get in touch. Happy First Birthday HMS As we approach our first birthday, we look back on how it all began. In September last year a wonderful lady called Karen from the Ansell Centre, with the support of Community Action Suffolk, called a public meeting to see if there was any interest in setting up a Men’s Shed group here in Hadleigh. The response was amazing and work began straight away. A provisional committee was formed and plans were put in motion. Thankfully the new group also received some great support from the wider community with donations of tools and equipment. But there was still a huge fly in the ointment! A Men’s Shed requires a workshop and this was proving to be difficult to find. Just as we were beginning to think that this exciting new project might be a non-starter, we received a very generous offer of an old workshop on a temporary loan for at least twelve months and that was that. We made our first visit to the workshop in mid December last year and we’ve been resident ever since. We soon started opening four times a week and our membership has steadily grown. We recently recorded over 1,000 individual visits and there is a very optimistic feel about the place. Twelve months on and we are still looking for a more permanent base, but thankfully our patron continues to accommodate us. For anyone thinking about coming down to the shed to join us, you will receive a very warm welcome. There is always a very friendly and relaxed atmosphere and there is always a cuppa on the go. So as we mark our first year and head towards 2024 we are looking forward to a very bright future. For more info please email us at hadleighmensshed@gmail.com or find us on Facebook.

Congratulations Paul Barton Congratulations to Paul Barton on completing your Ironman Triathlon on 16th September 2023 in Cervia, Italy in ~18hrs. Well done Paul. Love and best wishes from Mum, Dad, Emma, Georgia, Alanah and family.

Why wait, make a difference

today

Making charitable donations can be an effective part of a well created legacy plan. But what does this mean? In simple terms it is about how you manage your money when you pass away. It is about ensuring as much of your hard-earned wealth goes where you want, with the minimal impact from taxation. However, you do not have to wait until you have passed on to do this, there are potential tax advantages to making charitable donations in your lifetime. Charitable donations can be considered when calculating your tax bill for the current year, possibly reducing the income tax you pay. The most important thing is to have a plan. Whether it is how your estate is to be distributed when you die or how to ensure you are being as tax efficient as possible, it all starts with a plan. This month I have been helping at St. Mary’s Church. They have an ambitious plan to renew the heating and lighting system, some of which has been in place since 1984! If you are involved in a community project you feel we could help with, please feel free to get in touch. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time. The value of any tax relief is dependent on individual circumstances.

Judge Dredged! There’s been a lot of rain recently! Floods and mud and lots of worry and a lot of heartache for those directly affected. HEAT does a lot of work monitoring the health of the river so here’s an update about dredging from what we have gleaned from our monthly meetings with the Environment Agency, the water companies and others. (We’re not professionals of course so this is just our own understanding of the situation.). On the night of Storm Babet some places in Suffolk had over 100 mm of rain meaning each hectare of land received 1 million litres of water. Now the Brett is 24km long and it drains an area of 8,500 hectares. Let’s assume that 100mm of rain fell across our whole catchment area. That would mean 8.5 billion litres of water, or 340 Olympic swimming pools, that weren’t there on the Friday morning, all looking for somewhere to go by Saturday morning. There are only three places it can go: some soaks into the ground and deep aquifers, and some will evaporate, but most flows down the river to the sea. Now imagine that all the communities upstream of us had demanded their bit of the Brett was dredged ‘to prevent flooding’. Their rain would rapidly flow off the land upstream but at Hadleigh, we would have faced a much higher wave of flood water that would have flooded many more houses. If Hadleigh dredged too, Higham would be obliterated by those 8 billion litres arriving all at once. Even dredging the whole length of rivers wouldn’t help as it would simply increase soil erosion, wreck the wildlife on which our ecosystem depends and, in a high tide, cause absolutely huge flood waves to build up at communities on river estuaries. So weirdly, the key to flood control is usually not to speed up the drainage but to slow it down. For this you need flood plains, bogs, and wetlands. In towns you need gardens and trees, not driveways and tarmac. To live with more extreme weather, be it sudden downpours or summer droughts, we have to work together as a single community bound together by the watershed of the Brett and all subject to the same changing climate. Even more important we have to work with nature’s own natural solutions of gardens, flood plains, ponds, trees and fenland. These provide much greater protection to both us and wildlife, than dredging ever can. And as an added bonus tackling floods this way also helps retain moisture in the land ready for those summer droughts! Council welcomes funding to help meet swimming pool energy costs Babergh District Council has been awarded funding of £115,620 to help offset increased utility costs at Hadleigh Pool & Leisure. The successful bid for Sport England Phase 1 Swimming Pool Grants funding was awarded for Hadleigh Pool & Leisure, owned by Babergh District Council and operated by not-for-profit social enterprise Abbeycroft Leisure – however a first-round bid for funding to help the council-owned Kingfisher Leisure Centre in Sudbury was unsuccessful, as well as bids by neighbouring Mid Suffolk District Council for Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre and Stradbroke Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre. Swimming pools are particularly dependent on energy use, maintaining ambient temperature and heating pool water to the right temperature for leisure use, so inflation and soaring energy bills have put leisure providers under increasing financial pressure. Cllr Deborah Saw, Babergh District Council Cabinet Member for People and Place said: “The health and wellbeing of our communities is a priority for our council and we are working hard, in partnership with providers, to keep facilities open despite severe pressure on our budget. We obviously welcome this funding – and hope for further support in the second round for all our pools and leisure centres facing the same challenge, both here in Babergh and in neighbouring Mid Suffolk.” Warren Smyth, Chief Executive of Abbeycroft Leisure said: "Soaring energy costs, the impact of Covid and cost of living pressures are putting swimming pools across the country under huge pressure. We have received excellent support from Babergh District Council, but this is a much wider issue and we are very pleased to have received this national award." Sport England's Director of Place, Lisa Dodd-Mayne said: "We know just how vital swimming pools and leisure centres are to our nation’s activity levels, which is why Sport England is proud to have played a central role in the delivery of this fund. “Many pools have faced a real and significant threat to their survival this year, as local authorities and operators battle the challenge of increased energy and maintenance costs, weakened reserves and difficulties with retaining staff. We continue to work with our partners to ensure the long-term viability of these vital community resources.” Sports Minister Stuart Andrew said: “Leisure centres and pools are vital for millions of people to stay fit and healthy, and we know that many public swimming pools are experiencing greater pressure due to increased operating costs. We have heard their concerns and have stepped in to help them make ends meet with £20 million immediate relief, and a further £40 million to help improve the sustainability of public swimming pools over the long term. "This is part of our support for grassroots sports facilities with more than £400 million in order to achieve our ambitious target of getting 3.5 million more people active by 2030." A decision on Sport England Phase 2 Swimming Pool Grants funding is expected next month.

Tom Bartleet selected as Liberal Democrat PPC for South Suffolk After a recent vote by the members of Babergh (South Suffolk) Liberal Democrats, we are excited to announce that Tom Bartleet has been confirmed as the Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the South Suffolk constituency. Tom has lived in and around South Suffolk for the last 30 years. After obtaining a degree in economics at university, he spent 20 years rising to senior management levels in both London and New York with a global broker. The following 10 years he ran his own successful insurance business serving clients across the UK. On hearing the news of his selection as PPC, Tom said that he was looking forward to making a difference for the constituents of South Suffolk. He added: “Like most people that I talk to, I am totally disillusioned by the state of UK politics. But I have the time and the energy to do something about it and make change happen. That’s why it’s my aim to become the next MP for South Suffolk so that I can help people and properly represent you in Parliament.”

Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre I must apologise for not writing anything in the last few months. It’s been very busy at The Shelley Centre with lots of changes happening. As a reminder or for those new to my blog, I’m Ebony, a mechanical simulator. I live indoors with my little friend Babs, and we supplement the therapy that the live ponies give. I’m here for our riders whatever the weather and for some of our riders, I’m the most important horse! I am often the first step for new riders before they start riding my real-life friends. Sadly we’ve had to say ‘happy retirement’ to Lyn Bensusan who has managed the stables for over 40 years and goodbye to several of our ponies. But with goodbyes, come new beginnings and we welcomed Abi Sinclair as the new, and very experienced, stable manager together with three new ponies – Fletch, Cloud and Dave. And we hope to welcome more ponies shortly as all my friends old and new are having to work very hard. To get the new ponies used to working with our range of riders takes a lot of hard work and the dedicated riding volunteers spent a busy summer helping Abi get them ready for their important therapy work. And, as always, the Autumn Term brings new riders and new volunteers. All are settling in well and enjoying getting used to the new ponies, when the weather allows. The photo shows the new horse Dave, being ridden by Teresa, and my old friend Tilly, being ridden by Bronwen. We always have room for more helpers and would love to welcome even more fresh faces into the Centre. Most Volunteers give a morning or an afternoon per week, during school term times only. Please contact us if you would like to know more – you don’t have to be horsey, just willing to learn and kind. We always need help and support for our fundraising activities, which are essential for the running of the Centre as well as being great fun. One way to help is to sponsor one of the ponies, and if you do they promise to keep in touch with you throughout the year. You can find out how to be a sponsor from our new web page: www.shelleyrda.com Website: www.shelleyrda.com Telephone: 01473 824172

Mayor’s Monthly At the start of November, I was asked by Mark Brennan to help him at the Hadleigh Cemetery with talks about those residents of our town who died in the war. The session was aimed at the school children of Hadleigh to bring to life the stories around the lives and tragic deaths of each and every one who went off to serve their country and never returned. These talks were well received by the students from each of the schools that attended. On 11th November I, along with other Hadleigh residents, stood in silence for two minutes to remember all those who went to fight for our country and those who never returned. This mark of remembrance was ended by a lone trumpeter playing The Last Post. Later that evening I was present at a very well-attended Remembrance Festival in St Marys Church which was organised by Mark Brennan. The event had a wonderful orchestra from Colchester, our own choristers along with the Military Wives Choir, a youth dance troop, a fantastic young flautist plus a very talented pianist who wrote a piece especially for this event. All of the money raised at this event was put to the Poppy Appeal. On Remembrance Sunday, 12th November, I was asked, along with my wife, to lead the procession along the High Street to the War Memorial for the laying of the wreaths, Mark Brennan was at the head of the procession with us to make sure I remembered how to put my right foot in front of my left! Hadleigh residents turned out in fantastic numbers to line the route to pay their respects to our fallen. Personnel from Wattisham paraded and marched the route, and I must say they looked the part. A lone Apache helicopter made a slow flyby as a mark of respect during the procession. All of this culminated in a service at St Mary’s Church. On the 17th November I held a quiz at the Guildhall Complex, in aid of SSAFA, which is my chosen charity for this mayoral year, I am pleased to say that the quiz was sold out and fun was had by all and £1025 was raised for SSAFA by not only the ticket sales but also the raffle which had some fantastic prizes donated by local businesses and residents. Cpt Louise Davis-Smith, attended along with a group of SSAFA volunteers, and after explaining to all in attendance with a heartfelt speech about what SSAFA is all about, Louise was visibly moved by the overwhelming display of goodwill to her and the rest of the SSAFA volunteers. A final word about the quiz, a big thank you to Wendy, Alicja and Jackie. Wendy and Alicja for their hard work setting up and running the quiz, and Jackie for not only keeping me in line but for arranging the prizes. Don’t forget the Christmas Event and Light Switch On which is taking place on 2nd December, the High Street and Market Place will be closed off for this. This event is looking like it will be fun for all, see you there.

Approximately every other month we have expert demonstrators come along to show us techniques and projects and to answer any questions the members may have. If you would like to or are considering joining us, it doesn’t matter whether you are new to turning, just interested or already an experienced turner, please get in touch with Geoff Harris on 01473 828194 who will be delighted to hear from you.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk A year ago, I was a Treasury Minister as we were putting in place Covid-scale interventions to support people directly with their energy bills, which spiked so sharply after the invasion of Ukraine. Twelve months on and I’m now a Defence Minister, who has seen at first-hand the extraordinary effort from our armed forces to train the Ukrainians and support their fight for freedom. Meanwhile, on the home front, the surge in the cost of living that resulted from the war has finally started to come under control. That said, whilst I’m delighted that the Prime Minister delivered on his promise to halve inflation and start to reverse cost of living pressures, I’m fully aware that this alone does not translate to life suddenly getting cheaper or easier for many people. As such, it remains as important as ever that at this festive time of year, we remember those less fortunate than ourselves. To that end, I think it’s a key part of my job to support the voluntary sector, who do so much to help those with less, in ways that are often perhaps underappreciated. That’s why I set up my ‘Community Champion’ awards, to recognise everyone who gives their time to help out - from school governors to parish councillors; litter pickers to charity fundraisers. Last month I confirmed that the winner of this year’s award was Carol Moss from East Bergholt, who at the age of 85 is still volunteering as a community first responder – on call 24/7, and one of many fantastic nominees. Of course, good causes need funding and back in September - on the hottest day of the year- I was delighted to participate in ‘Ride n’ Stride’, cycling a sweltering 60-mile lap of South Suffolk to support St Mary’s Church, Hadleigh. My thanks to all readers who sponsored me. I was also pleased to recently confirm that Hadleigh swimming pool had received over £115,000 from the Government, via Sport England. On another important local issue, in November I held a multi-agency antisocial behaviour roundtable – with a particular focus on speeding – at St Mary’s Church. With Hadleigh residents, the police and all levels of local Government represented, we agreed to look at a number of options to address the issue, including speed camera deployment. May I take the opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Message from the New Chairman If you believe that retirement does not mean just sitting back and taking it easy, then you will understand why I value the u3a so highly. It's true that I did not become involved until long after my retirement, but better late than never. The u3a is more than the sum of its parts; it is a force for good, a national, yet local, group that emphasises how the retired gentlefolk of this good island have a tremendous amount to contribute. I am happy to take on the role of chairman of Hadleigh u3a as we move towards 2024. If I can be half as effective as Sue Witham, my predecessor, I shall be very pleased. We are in a strong position with nearly 200 members, many interest groups and have an excellent group of speakers lined up, not to mention some wonderful excursions. The committee is very hard working and it is for this reason that I can look forward to our ongoing development, to continue to offer a wide range of topics for a wide range of interests and attract a wide range of people. Hadleigh u3a meets on the second Monday of each month at 2.30pm in the Hadleigh United Reformed Church where a warm welcome awaits. Rowan Cain - Chairman

Parish Council Below are the main matters that were discussed at the Parish Council Meeting of 25 October 2023 • District Council Cllr Keeble said the data on housing, environment, health and the local economy was useful. Cllr Laing gave Cllr Ward a list of questions relating to CIFCO, Babergh’s commercial property arm; he would respond to these at the November meeting. In response to a question, Cllr Ward confirmed that CIL money was received and distributed every six months. He would find out more about the new round of business grants. Councillors were pleased to note that the giving of live animals as prizes would be banned on land owned by Babergh DC. • Suffolk County Council With regard to the footbridge between Upper and Lower Layham, Cllr Hall noted the concerns raised by the Clerk and agreed that the Environment Agency and SCC should be working more closely together. She would see whether she could fund a new Lower Layham sign to replace the damaged one on Layham Road. Work to address the blocked drains in Overbury Hall Road was due to take place in November. • Budget & Precept The working party would bring recommendations to the November meeting. • Speeding and traffic calming The working party reported on a useful site meeting with SCC on 23 October and would bring recommendations to the November meeting. • Anglian Water Services Bury to Colchester pipeline It was noted that permission had been granted for the pipeline scheme. • Council training The two sessions for full council had been very useful and informative.

Andy Groves played the ‘Last Post’ and the ‘Reveille’ at Layham’s Remembrance Service on Sunday 12 November 2023 for the fourteenth and last time. His lips are giving up! We are all very grateful to him for carrying out this important role for so long. It was when he was just 8 years old and living in Hornchurch that he started to play the trumpet. As he was dyslexic he couldn’t read music but instead he learned to use numbers for the valve movements. He later used the same technique to teach children to play without the need for written music. He was a member of a military marching band for 25 years and achieved the rank of sergeant before he left.

Social Club Sue Dodson gave a most entertaining demonstration of Christmas wreath making. The hall rang to laughter as Sue showed her skills with a glue gun, affixing pine cones and a variety of decorations to a hazel wreath. Who would have thought that Christmas decoration making could be such fun? Sue should be in stand up and we definitely vote her Layham’s Best Comedian. In appreciation of Sue’s performance, the donations to Breast Cancer amounted to an amazing £40.

Storm Babet flooding and financial help Suffolk residents who experienced exceptional property flooding during Storm Babet between 19 and 25 October 2023 will start receiving financial support during November. The Government has announced grants and council tax reductions through the Flood Recovery Framework: Suffolk councils are working together to action them, with Suffolk County Council collecting information and assessing the reports, and the district and borough councils distributing Jane Caruthers the funding to eligible property owners. All reports of property flooding need to be submitted via the Suffolk County Council reporting tool now. If you have experienced flooding to your property because of Storm Babet, you need to: 1. Visit: Suffolk County Council - ReportIT. 2. Click on: ‘Report It’. 3. Then click: ‘Drainage and Flooding’. 4. Then click: ‘Flooding inside residential / non-residential property’. 5. Please include as Simon Dowling much information as you have; there is also an option to upload photos. 6. Suffolk CC officers will contact you to gather further information and prioritise locations that meet criteria for an official investigation. 7. The district council will then contact you to arrange payment, if eligible. If you can’t submit your report online, please call 0345 606 6171. Council tenants and repairs Babergh has allocated £943,000 from reserves to tackle the backlog of repairs to council properties. Inspections are under way, and a programme of repairs prioritising the most urgent is being drawn up. If you have an emergency or urgent repair to report, in office hours call 0300 123 4000 (option 3); outside office hours, call 0808 168 7794. Emergencies include: blocked drains; total loss of power, water or heating; dangerous structural faults including a leaking roof; and making a home secure. Routine repairs which are not urgent can be requested online at: https://www.babergh.gov.uk/w/request-a-repair . Suffolk councils delivering project to improve private rented housing sector ‘Safe Suffolk Renters’ is an initiative to support private sector tenants, landlords and other stakeholders. Babergh has joined with Suffolk’s other district and borough councils to deliver a ground-breaking project aimed at improving the experience and environment for landlords and tenants in the private rented sector. The project staged a landmark conference for private sector landlords at the University of Suffolk in Ipswich: Engaging for a Better Future brought together landlords, representatives of member associations and industry professionals in November. The conference featured practical guidance and information on a range of subjects including mortgages, financing, tax advice, property maintenance and changes to legislation. Free net zero advice for Suffolk businesses and organisations Babergh has partnered with an environment charity to deliver expert energy advice to businesses. Community and environment charity Groundwork East has partnered with Babergh and the county’s other local authorities, to deliver free and impartial expert advice to help businesses and organisations save energy, reduce their emissions, and establish tailored decarbonisation plans. The Net Zero Business Advice Service will enable businesses, the voluntary sector and other organisations working in Suffolk to understand their greenhouse gas emissions, set a plan to reduce these, and access grant funding to implement carbon reduction actions. Sites still wanted in Hadleigh for sowing wildflower meadows and planting trees BDC Biodiversity Team’s free trees, hedgerows and wildflowers scheme is still open for applications that both help wildlife and have public access (so this scheme does not include private gardens). Details of the scheme, along with the application form, are available on the new website page at: https://www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/w/trees-and-wildflowersscheme. Developers provide cash boost for community projects More than £705,000 collected from developers in Babergh and Mid Suffolk is being injected back into communities – projects include play areas, cycle paths and village hall improvements to be funded by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) grants. If you know of a community project which might qualify for CIL funding, contact your BDC ward councillor in the first instance. Hadleigh Walkers Our walk on Saturday 9th Dec will start and end in Hadleigh. As we are approaching Christmas, we have chosen a circular walk of around 9.5 miles taking in some of the best of Hadleigh’s countryside and providing a number of points where the walk can be shortened in the event of bad weather. We will leave Stonehouse Road car park at 0930 and proceed via the Railway walk to the mile post, then Raydon Great Wood, Raydon Hall Fm, Raydon Church, Shelley, Waterhouse Fm, Lower Layham, Overbury Hall and back into Hadleigh through Tinkers Lane. We should be back into Hadleigh by around 1330 even allowing for 2 refreshment breaks along the way As usual, we aim to maintain a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) however remember that the proposed route involves some modest up and downs. Walkers should be aware that any weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. Each December we donate any excess income above our website running costs to a local charity. This year we are donating £50 to the Porch Project. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com

Whatfield Charity Craft Fair An annual charity Craft Fair held at Whatfield Village Hall attracted over 240 people last month and raised £1800 for Success After Stroke. The Organiser, Mandy Squirrell, expressed special thanks to her family and friends for their hard work and to the visitors for helping to make the event such a success. The Village Hall has already been booked for next year’s Craft Fair on Sunday 13th October 2024.

Hadleigh Garden Club At our November meeting we were very well informed and entertained by Jayne Foster who demonstrated how to make a Christmas wreath and a table decoration using a large Christmas Cracker. She also brought along another wreath to show how different materials can be used and the effect created. Many members were inspired to consider making their own arrangements. Remember if you are making your own wreaths to try not to use too much ivy as the flowers are an early source of nectar for the bees, no bees no flowers, vegetables or food crops. The competition winner for a Vase of Autumnal Flowers was Fiona and several members enjoyed raffle prizes. Our next meeting is on 11th December 2023 and will be our annual Quiz Night which this year will have questions on a wide range of subjects. The Committee will also be providing a finger buffet with mulled wine or a soft drink. It will be in at the usual venue of The Guild Room, opposite St. Mary’s Church, Hadleigh commencing at 7.30pm. There will also be a special Christmas Raffle. If you are writing up next year’s diary the Club will be changing their Club night to the 3rd Monday in the month still at 7.30 pm in the Guild Room. Hope to see you there. For more information contact: Hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com or Tel: Angie on 07946 744457

Save St Mary’s (Hadleigh) Community Project Update Vestry Renewal: - The work is due to be completed this month. On 15th December there will a viewing day for visitors from 10am to 4pm. Why not pop into the church and see the transformation which has taken place in this small but important room? Heating and Lighting: -The next challenge for the Renewal Team (RT) is the upgrading of the heating and lighting so that the Church is a comfortable venue all the year round. 14 beautiful chandeliers will adequately meet the challenge. These attractive units can be used collectively or separately as the need arises. Now that the total cost of their purchase and installation is known, the RT will be pulling out all the stops to raise the money. Watch this space. Future Church Events, Café Church and Pop-Up Lunchtimes: Attendance at the Café Church on Friday mornings is growing with the added attraction of Craft Fair on the first Friday of every month. The convivial company and tempting smell of Andrew’s famous mouthwatering all-day breakfast and delicious bacon butties are hard to resist. Making full use of this wonderful community space will safeguard its future. If you are looking for something to do in the middle of the week why not join the pop-up lunchtime gatherings from 2pm to 5.30pm every second and fourth Wednesday of the month? These are becoming increasingly popular with young and old alike. All activities are in addition to the quieter times for worship and prayer. The RT look forward to the day when the church will provide a welcoming, comfortable facility for all who walk through its doors. Please do come along and support the many varied events and activities at the church. These are open to all members of the community. Alone or with family and friends you can be sure of a warm welcome. WARM WISHES AT CHRISTMAS. ALL THE VERY BEST FOR AN INTERESTING, EVENTFUL 2024

On behalf of my sister Julia and I, we would like to thank everyone that came to our mother's funeral in St Mary's Church on 25th October 2023, also for the cards and messages of condolence. It was great to see so many people there and lovely to speak to them after the service in St Mary's who kindly let us have refreshments in the Church. It was Joan's wish for donations to go to St Mary's Church for its restoration and community work. Joan died peacefully in her sleep on 27th September in Waterfield House. Dear Sir, What a splendid evening the “Last Night of the Proms” was for all those who attended on Saturday 21st October. Congratulations to Father Jo and all those people who helped stage the event. It clearly demonstrates how St. Mary’s Church, Hadleigh can benefit the community, as it has for previous generations. What would we do without this building? That is a serious question. Too many churches have closed, and so too might ours if we fail to maintain it. We owe it to the next generation to ensure it remains fit for purpose now, and survives for the future. It is a wonderful community asset. Raising funds to ensure the church is safe, secure and welcoming is never easy. As Father Jo explained, there is a plan for a much-needed combined heating and lighting system in the form of chandeliers. Perhaps a volunteer street champion for each street in Hadleigh to raise funds might work. That way, It should help engage the whole Hadleigh community. How much could each street raise for the “Church Chandelier Challenge”? Roger Young

Dear Sir, May I congratulate the Staff of Hadleigh Town council and the Army of volunteers who organised and erected the Christmas Trees. I moved to Hadleigh in 1961 and was involved in the first year that the then Hadleigh chamber of Trade, mainly shop keepers, organised for the first time that the High Street was decorated with Christmas trees and held the first Lighting up ceremony. Over the years other organisations have taken over the role and for a few years nobody organised it, but some of us residents continued always to put up an outside tree ourselves. Thankfully the Town Council some years ago took over the role and have organised the purchase of trees and the volunteers to erect and dismantle them. As a resident who no longer can climb a ladder I am delighted that all of these arrangements are done for me. Apart from sending a cheque for my tree and having my lights ready to go on the tree I no longer have to scramble out in the cold to prepare and put the tree up. My cheque covers the cost of the tree, and the volunteers get a cup of coffee and sandwich. Usually, they are freezing cold and in need of a hot drink by the time they have finished. I have heard some complaints about how early the trees were put up this year. It was only one week earlier than usual, and probably dependent on the when the trees were available and the volunteers could set a Saturday aside. A week or two early is better than no trees at all and far preferable than our Council spending thousands of pounds for garish, professional decorations. Well done and thank you to all of those involved. (I hope it is dry on the day you have to take them all down again). Happy Christmas. Jan Byrne

Winter Concert in Hadleigh’s Grand Hall On Saturday 16 December at 2.30 pm, Hadleigh’s Community Choir will give their Winter Concert in the Grand Hall under the direction of new Music Director Dr Matthew Olyver. It promises to be a varied seasonal programme packed full of favourites old and new – and of course also some carols which allow the audience to participate. Let us get you into the festive spirit and take you round the world with songs ranging from the “Fairy Tale of New York” to “Bethlehem”. “December will be Magic Again” is not just a promise, but another song in our programme. But enough sneak preview. Come along and be carried away by our wintertime celebration! For some of our singers this will be the first time to perform in a full concert. We had an intake of new members who have joined the choir since September and are looking forward to the experience of public performance. Before the choir’s Winter Concert, you can enjoy shorter public displays at the Christmas market on 2 December and some of our singers will take part in the chorus supporting the Hadleigh Orchestra concert on 3 December too. Hadleigh Community Choir is welcoming anyone who would like to sing in a choir for any reason they can think or for no reason other than the enjoyment of music. Come along to hear us sing and then join us in January, when we are starting to rehearse the repertoire for the Summer Concert. Tickets for the Winter Concert are available from The Little Ginger Bee, Avis Newsagents and the Idler Bookshop as well as online through the choir’s website hadleighcommunitychoir.org.uk or using the QR code displayed on the posters throughout town and in this paper. www.hadleighcommunitynews.co.uk

Hadleigh Community Forum Tuesday 14 November 2023 IN ATTENDANCE: CHAIR: Richard Fletcher, Notes: Jess Janas, Mike Turley, Jane Snowdon, Claire Coster, Glenn Abbassi, Wendy Brame, Jan Devey, Jane Carruthers, Sarah Thompson, Huw Roberts, Kathryn Grandon, Jimmy Wilding & Jill Mason (part) 1 WELCOME: The Chair welcomed everyone 2 REPORT OF THE LAST MEETING: Accepted 3 MATTERS ARISING: There were no matters arising 4 STANDARD UPDATES 4.1 HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL (HTC) Public Consultation on the Neighbourhood Plan opened on 6 November and is due to close on 18 December. Open Day 29 November – everyone encouraged to attend and comment to shape the development of our town. Over £10k left in the Grants pot for charities and community organisations to apply for funding. Mayor’s Quiz on 17 Nov in aid of SSAFA – the armed forces charity. Now fully booked with 22 tables filled. Christmas Trees in the High Street went up on 11 November. Some members of the Community Forum felt this was far too early and, at the very least, should not have gone up until after Remembrance Sunday. It was explained that the date to put up the trees is bound by the supplier’s delivery date and the availability of staff and volunteers. A meeting of residents affected by the recent flooding from Storm Babet was held at the Town Council last week. This was for information sharing and gathering and a database of properties affected by flooding has now been created. 4.2 BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL (BDC) Starbucks drive-through planning application has been approved. There is a pot of money available for double-yellow-lining if this becomes necessary to alleviate any delivery/parking issues. There is a new application in for the shop that was Rosebuds florist to be reclassified as residential As there are no residential sites in the central retail area of the High Street, it is felt this would be detrimental to the vitality of the High Street and people are encouraged to comment to BDC planning to this effect. BDC has a new website. Everyone is encouraged to view this. There is a survey, “Setting the future direction of your councils” for which BDC would be grateful for any comments which would feed into the corporate plan for BDC/MS.

The Library services current contract comes to an end in 2025 and will be out for competitive tender. The consultation period for this ends on 26 January (see the SCC link through the BDC website) and as this is such an important aspect of our town it is vital that people put in comments, please. BDC is using £943k from reserves to tackle backlog of housing repairs and there will be a consultation on making energy efficiency improvements on listed buildings in a simplified manner. Jane Carruthers, from BDC and Jan Devey have been able to assist a resident with major mobility issues, that was living in what can only be described squalid conditions, and it is hoped he will very soon be rehoused. The same dynamic duo is also making progress with the tree root issue at Magdalen Road car park and a potential one-way system for Toppesfield car park. 4.3 VISIT HADLEIGH Jane attended the Visit East of England conference in Norwich. Tour guide training is included as a career choice. Local Visitor Economy Partnerships (L-VEPs) were launched last year to replace the current Destination Management Organisations but are still at an early stage as to how accreditation may be achieved. There is no written guidance/directive so Jane will follow up and attend the Babergh event in Ipswich on behalf of Suffolk Growth then report back. Hadleigh Town Guides are launching a new walk for 2024: “The Story of the High Street” which will be included in the Suffolk Walking Festival (11 - 26 May). Hadleigh is working on interpreting of “Routes, Networks & Connections” for the Heritage Festival (6 – 15 September). The Community Gardeners have redesigned the Cedric Morris Iris beds, installed new planters and pruned back many shrubs in Market Place Grateful thanks are offered to the team for their sterling work. 4.4 HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) A report was given to the meeting and can be found in the PPG column in each month’s Hadleigh Community News. 4.5 St MARYS CHURCH https://stmaryshadleigh.co.uk Refurbishment of the Vestry is close to being finished. The new stone floor is magnificent. The stone work of the vaulted ceiling has been repaired and the wooden panels restored and re-installed. It is hoped all works will be finished and the furniture installed by early December. Everyone is invited to an Open Day from 10am – 4pm on 15 December to view the fully refurbished Vestry. The next PCC meeting will be asked to approve the installation of fourtee

n heat/light chandeliers and necessary electrical works and trenching for cables to upgrade the power system so that the formal faculty can be applied for. Each chandelier should cost in the region of £7k fully fitted. We have received funding, so far, for three of the chandeliers and will be looking to raise funds for the remainder from Hadleigh as well as grant making bodies. The Last Night of the Proms was a huge success and raised sufficient money to cover half a chandelier ! Huge congratulations and thanks were offered to Mark Brennan for a magnificent Remembrance service in St Mary’s on Saturday evening. It showcased the massive talent we have among young people in Hadleigh., The civic Remembrance service on Sunday afternoon was very well attended by many of the military and many of the young uniformed groups, following the march from the Memorial in the High Street. Once again, we were privileged to be treated to an Apache flyover. 4.6 HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) Email: hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com www.hadleighheat.org Discussions about the river following the recent flooding are ongoing to agree what might be an appropriate way forward. Monthly zoom meetings continue, aiming to ensure effective co-ordination and partnership working for all issues to do with the Brett. More than 18 people attended the first Climate Café. Three more sessions are planned, including one on a Saturday. A number of tree-planting sessions are planned in partnership with Babergh and the Woodland Trust. Plans continue for developing a campaign for a reduction in carbon footprint and it is hoped to launch this in April 2024. For more information & to offer help on all the above, email: hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com 4.7 BENTON END No report given. 5 A O B In future, any items for AOB should be notified to Jess Janas (jessicanevard@btinternet.com) or the Chairman BEFORE the meeting please. 5.1 Hadleigh Flood Action Group: This is being looked at due to residents’ personal experience of flooding and its effects. The first meeting will be 17 Nov, 4pm at the Leisure Centre and its purpose is to see if there is enough interest for such an action group to be set up. If there is, it is expected to put together a working group of c.4–10 and act as the point of contact for all agencies and to set up a register for any residents/businesses wishing to be kept informed and working parties to help in clearing flood debris. This meeting is separate to that held by the Town Council and focuses on community action, although it will be working alongside the Town Council. For more information, email: lindsay@panton.name or gale@galepryor.co.uk 5.2 Station Ticket Offices: Following previous interest at the HCF we can now report that the Minister of State for Transport, Huw Merriman MP, announced that, after considering the responses to the consultation, the ticket office proposals did not meet the high thresholds set by the Government. As such, the reforms should not continue and ticket offices should remain open. 5.3 The United Reform Church will be open on 2 December for the Christmas Lighting event from 3pm – 6pm with a display of nativity scenes, refreshments and activities for children. 5.4 The Hadleigh Orchestra, with the Hadleigh Community Choir, will be giving their winter concert at St Mary’s church on the evening of 3rd December. This is a free event. The Christmas Present Trust has had requests for many more deliveries this year. This is the last year that Sarah & Simon Thompson will be organising this and are pleased to say that there is interest from others to take over, so this wonderful event continues. Sarah wants to pass on grateful thanks to Babergh and Kathryn Grandon for their generous support this year. And everyone wants to thank Sarah & Simon for their unstinting efforts in creating, maintaining and developing this invaluable asset to Hadleigh. 5.5 Jill Mason is looking at ways to encourage/facilitate training, mainly for those who are vulnerable, elderly or sight challenged and therefore unable or unwilling to use today’s technology (mobiles or computers).POST MEEETING NOTE: The Town Clerk had left the meeting but has asked that all be made aware that Babergh already offer this support and training at the Library – for details: https://www.babergh.gov.uk/digital-journey 5.6 Richard Fletcher raised the issue of the large numbers of new housing sites springing up in Babergh – often without much concern for the character or infrastructure of the local areas and the potential problems such new builds will create. Concern was expressed that developers may try to “get in by the back door” with no regard for the vision in and work already carried out in our Neighbourhood Plan. The two Local Plan Inspectors announced that to meet the Government criteria, a further 1,100 dwelling plots need to be built in Babergh. Hadleigh is already programmed for 675 dwellings and this will likely add a further 400-500 to this number. Everyone is asked to be extra vigilant to planning applications coming in and ensuring comment / opposition is made known to the Babergh Planning Dept. Details of the sites in Hadleigh, believed to be re-examined by the local plan can be found Babergh SHELAA – Hadleigh Excerpt: https://hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/simple-filelist/Neighbourhood-Plan-Documents/Supporting-Documents/SHELAAHadleigh.pdf The meeting closed at 5.41 NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 12 December 2023 @ 4:15pm. Brrrr! I don’t like these cold, dark days and nor does Ollie (the Black) Cat. He sprawls across the desk, swipes Mum if she tries to access her paperwork then walks over the keyboard which spues blank pages out of the printer! One of my other housemates, Buttons, is a Norfolk Terrier, a good solid no nonsense member of the family. She was the ideal companion for Mum at a Thanksgiving Service for animals to celebrate the love and care between pets and their owners. They received a warm welcome at St. Mary’s in Stoke by Nayland and the collection raised over £235 for SESAW. It’s been a difficult year for all animal charities with many people forced to give up their pets due to health or financial problems. Other animals are brought in, having being abandoned at the side of the road and often in need of urgent veterinary attention. Like most rescue centres, SESAW has been full to bursting and short of volunteers but we keep going, hoping the situation will ease up soon. Now that winter has arrived, please check our website or Facebook pages before visiting us as our seasonal shutdown begins in December. Meanwhile, very best wishes for good health and happiness to all our friends and rehomed animals, from Ollie (the Black) Cat and me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Hadleigh Evening WI In November we were decorating wine bottles (able to find plenty of empties!!) for the celebration of Christmas. This month we will be having a party and possibly producing more empties! The Lunch Bunch very much enjoyed a meal at The Saracen's Head in Newton Green and this month we will be meeting in the High Street at The George on the 14th. Bookworms read Agatha Christies's (writing as Mary Westmacott) The Burden. The December/January book is Mary Ann Schaffer/Annie Barrows The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Depending on the state of the ground, Amblers will be walking around Monks Eleigh or Lavenham on the 6th December and, as always, ending up in a local eating house, joining those who elect to not go on the walk. We meet at 7.30 pm in the Seminar Room of the Library on the third Tuesday - this month 21st December. If you would like to join us for a 'taster' visit, telephone either the Secretary Glenn Abassi on 07870 312409 or the President Sheila Webb on 01473 827554 and we will look out for you. Gaza 1917 - 50 Hadleigh Soldiers With war and devastation going on in Gaza at the moment, it is not always realised that Gaza was also the focus of conflict in 1917 during the Great War. At least 50 men from Hadleigh served there at that time. Two were killed and are remembered on the Hadleigh War Memorial. Today Private Frederick Goody and Captain Josuha Robert Rowley (see picture) lay buried in the Gaza War Cemetery just north of Gaza City. The British Army’s objective was to remove the German-backed remnants of the Ottoman Empire from Palestine and to capture Jerusalem. For most of 1917 stalemate existed until Gaza City fell in November. It was largely the territorial battalions that fought in Palestine and in particular the 1/5th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment. This Battalion had experienced the horrendous fight at Gallipoli in 1915 and via Egypt spent 1917-1918 in Palestine, with the significant contingent of Hadleigh men among them. These men are listed and their stories are told in the recently published book, Small Town Duty – Tales of Hadleigh’s Great War, available at Keith Avis the Newsagent, the Idler, Hollow Trees Farm Shop or the author at nigel_crisp@hotmail.com

Hadleigh Healing Society Christmas goodies are in the shops and the television channels are showing us what we can watch to entertain us during this festive time. If you watch the TV News you are being shown a different side of things. Bombing, destruction and lives lost. The world is a very unhappy place for lots of people who have relatives and friends caught up in it. Let us all send our thoughts out to these people and hope there is a speedy and peaceful end to it . PEACE must be the promise for 2024. If you have been affected by any of this please come and talk to our qualified, registered healers who will listen to your concerns. It has been a really busy term at St Mary’s! The children have enjoyed a range of sporting events and extra-curricular opportunities. We have devoted lots of extra time to reading activities and the children have also embraced lots of new learning, particularly in maths. Mathematics - At the start of this academic year we introduced a new mathematics scheme. The Ark Curriculum Mathematics Mastery programme is a fully resourced curriculum. The developers of the scheme were pioneers in the mastery approach to teaching maths. This early work led to the DfE adopting the mastery approach to teaching mathematics. We are already able to see the benefits of the scheme for teachers and pupils. Our subject knowledge has been strengthened and teachers are more confident in their maths teaching. Children are displaying significantly more understanding and enjoyment for maths. Forest School - During our ‘Discovery at the Deanery’ sessions, the adults relive a wonderful experience from their childhood. The children used hand drills to put holes in conkers and then thread some string through. The children had traditional conker fights, attached them to sticks to make fishing rods and even necklaces. It’s always a lovely thing to be able to share past experiences with the next generation. Thank you so much to the Hadleigh scouts and 4 Life Landscapes for donating rope for our Forest School activities. We have had great fun this term learning how to build rope swings and bridges! If you have any rope which you no longer need it would always be appreciated! In October, we celebrated national Forest Schools day and the rain didn’t stop us enjoying it! We drilled conkers, made friends with snails and built a den to keep us dry whilst fishing! Also, we had a very special visit from Hana Hawk who’s a Forest School legend and she passed on so much wisdom to both children and adults. The children love exploring the natural world and they found a beautiful furry friend who they found out would eventually become a moth. The children have also enjoyed sitting and listening to the birds. As well as building dens, the children cleared a space and helped create our mud kitchen. There are some new Forest recipe cards in the mud kitchen, the children enjoyed exploring the site to find the ingredients. River Rose is hoping the children will make some invisibility potion! Whilst Oak class have been busy recently, helping to repair our site at the deanery, (We lost most of it during the flood), Year 2 were lucky enough to spend time at our developing, “mini discovers” site behind the school. What a fun time they have all had! Awesome Art! - The children in Year 5 have had a go at weaving. They worked in groups to design and weave their patterns into their frame. The children worked brilliantly together and had a great time doing something different! As well as their creativity, it was great to see the children developing their collaborative skills. Year 5 have also started some really fantastic sculptures in the style of Alberto Giacometti. They designed a figure using sticks and clay in the style of our current topic, Ancient Greece. They focused particularly on creating Olympic athletes. Watch this space for more messy photos as we Modroc the sculptures! Beech Class have also been enjoying VERY MESSY but fun lessons in art using Modroc! The children have been creating their own Egyptian style bowls, which will be decorated using our Egyptian designs. We can’t wait to see the final result! This work was inspired by the children’s history topic.

For those who ask, we try to give advice, guidance and constructive criticism but there is no 'teacher'. We charge £2 per session to cover the cost of room hire and tea/coffee. You only pay for the sessions you attend and the first one is free so you are welcome to drop in and see us on a Tuesday afternoon. Annual membership subs are £5 and are due each May. Hadleigh Cycling Club Hadleigh Cycling Club’s AGM (Friday, 6.30pm, 8th December, The George PH) will be an opportunity to reflect on 2023, to acknowledge the efforts of those who have served the club and to look forward to 2024. Members and nonmembers are invited to attend. One high point of the year was undoubtedly the Go-Ride Race Day in April which was attended by 40 young riders. Some riders even travelled from Earls Colne and Bury St. Edmunds. The coaching team ran sessions across several ability groups followed by an afternoon of mini races. The young riders left with smiles on their faces, British Cycling goodies, some even received medals for their racing! The Go-Ride Day was the catalyst to restart the Junior Club which ran from April to July, followed by a Summer Holiday Race League. In September, it was terrific to see the Pros sprinting along our bunting-laden High Street on Stage 5 of the Tour of Britain. Fans and casual spectators got to see a genuine cycling superstar, Wout van Aert who went on to win the Tour. Hadleigh Cycling Club is for everyone: the child graduating from a balance bike or stabilisers, the Junior competing in her first Cyclo-X race, the Sunday social rider searching for a coffee-stop and company, the commuter intent on saving a few quid, the garage turbo-rider climbing a virtual Everest, the activist wanting to do their bit, the couch potato trying to shed a few pounds or even those terrific folk who love nothing better than pottering along the highways and byways of South Suffolk. We’d like to wish all cyclists in the town and surrounding villages a Happy Christmas and ‘All the Best’ for 2024 (and extend it to all the car drivers who’ve given us a good 2 metres when overtaking and acknowledged us when we’ve let you overtake). The club runs a social ride on Sundays usually starting at 9.00am from The George and there is a café stop. The rides are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub X/Twitter @HadleighCycling Instagram hadleighcc or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

October has been yet another busy month for our runners who have been taking part in so many different races. Sam and Vicky Tapp kicked off the month running the Witchfinder Trail 10k in Mistley. They reported it was a very relaxed and friendly local event which supported a local charity and well worth entering next year. On the 7 October a few Hares met up at Clare Castle Park Run for a social run. It was a lovely autumn morning and it is a great venue for a Park Run, not only for the scenery, but also the café! Lovely to have juniors and seniors running together, although the juniors whizzed past most of us! Capel 5 was held on the 8 October and we were well represented by our runners. Well done to Daniel Cooper, Nikki Vince, Barbara Jousiffe, Crystal Murray, Belinda Godbold, Joel Bamsey, Ryan McNeil, Samatha Cooper and junior runner Aderyn McDonald. The conditions were exceptionally warm for an October morning but nonetheless all runners put their all in. Congratulations to Nikki who came first in her age group with a time of 41:39. Geraldine Suckling, Vicky & Sam Tapp took part in Oxford Half Marathon on 15 October. This is an extremely popular race with a record 13,000 runners taking part. Vicky ran an excellent time of 1:45:15 knocking off 4 and half minutes for her personal best. In Saxmundham, Julia Bilotta ran Saxon 5 which is a multi terrain race. Meanwhile, representing Suffolk in the Eastern Counties 10k champs, Claire Jacobs ran in the Cambridge Town & Gown 10k. She ran a super race and finished 2nd in 33:40, 9 sec behind winner and Suffolk team mate Maddie Jordon-Lee. Never one to keep still, Claire ran an outstanding race at Coventry Half Marathon on 29 October. In a field of just short of 2000 finishers, Claire finished 1st lady and 15th overall in what was a very demanding hilly course in a time of 1.16.41. The same weekend Geraldine Suckling was running Dublin Marathon in the pouring rain! This didn’t deter her from achieving a personal best of 4:27:26. To finish off the month, we had our first North Essex & South Suffolk cross country race of the season which took place in Chemlsford. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a full team of juniors and seniors. Those who did run put in tremendous performances on what was a tough course around the fields of Writtle. Well done to Belinda Godbold who came 1st in her age group and to our runners of the day, Thomas Davis and Stuart Hunt. If you would like to join a friendly and supportive running club as a member or a coach you can find out all about us and how to join at www.hadleigh-hares.co.uk
