Successful walk in memory of Gareth

One windy Sunday in July, the Gareth Meredith Memorial walkers rambled along the paths from Boxford to Hadleigh Health Centre. The five-and-a-half-mile walk was a fitting way to remember Gareth as he also loved running and walking. His parents, Beryl and Alan Meredith, took great care to see that the route was clearly signposted and that drinks were available along the way. Participants included Gareth’s family, friends, Dr Nabarro for the Practice, canine friends and anyone who wanted to enjoy the tranquillity and beauty of the surrounding countryside. A small meet and greet team at the Health Centre welcomed the happy walkers with drinks and light refreshments to help restore their energy levels.

Beryl and Alan were delighted with the support they received and the participants’ enthusiasm for the walk. On the spot voluntary donations raised approximately £600. The final figure will be announced in the September issue. The money will buy an Infrared Vein Finder for the newly created Phlebotomy Room upstairs in the Practice.

There is still time to make a donation if you wish. Please contact Alan Meredith 01473 822433 / alan.k.meredith@btinternet.com

The Saturday Doctor’s service at the Hadleigh Health Centre, although housed in the Health Centre, is not run by our doctors. As it is not a walk in or an A & E set up, an appointment is necessary. You can phone the Health Centre to make an appointment with this ‘out of hours’ service.

We can all help save the NHS an enormous amount of money simply by checking our medicine before leaving the Pharmacy and cancelling unwanted appointments. Every year medicine waste accounts for a staggering loss of £300 million while missed GP’s appointments an eye watering £216 million. How well that could be spent elsewhere in the NHS.

Why not consider walking to your appointments especially if it’s a beautiful day? This will do much for your health, the environment and free up a car park space for those unable to get there on foot.

Hadleigh Walkers

Our August walk on Saturday 12th will again start and end in Hadleigh. We will leave Stonehouse Road car park at 0930 and proceed via Holbecks, Hadleigh Heath, Kersey Tye, Kersey, Peyton Hall and back into Hadleigh. The distance of the entire route is around 10 miles, and we should be back in Hadleigh around 1330.

We will have two short refreshment stops along the way. As usual, we aim to average a not-too-demanding 2.5 mph (4 km/hr) and walkers need to be able to maintain this pace. There is one slightly awkward stile enroute but otherwise the route is fairly straightforward. Any kind of weather is possible so strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground may be muddy or rough in places. Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Route maps can be requested from the website. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com or email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com

Hadleigh Evening WI

In July we will have held our Garden Party in the Old School, Bridge Street, which is a very welcoming venue. The Lunch Bunch enjoyed their visit to the Butt and Oyster in Pin Mill. The Amblers'walk along the promenade in Felixstowe followed by coffee and cake in the WoolBaa made for a very enjoyable trip. The amble will be much nearer home in August at Kersey Mill. Bookworms have read Lessons in Chemistry and the book for August is Miss Benton's Beetle. We are looking foward to welcoming Lyn Davies on the 15th who will be telling us about Life as an Opera Singer.

We meet in the Seminar Room of Hadleigh Library on the third Tuesday at 7.30pm. If you would like to come to a 'taster' evening, contact Glenn Abbassi the secretary on 07870 312409 or Sheila Webb the president on 01473 827554 and we will look out for you. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 15th August.

Hadleigh Utd FC is pleased to announce the appointment of a new Chairman or should we say Chairwoman!

At the recent AGM Mrs Tracy Croker was voted in as Chairwoman with universal accord and overwhelming acclaim. Tracy has previously served, for many years, the Hadleigh Utd Youth Section as Secretary and is now looking forward to spearheading a renewed effort to provide footballing opportunities for everyone in Hadleigh and the surrounding areas.

“It is with great honour and humility that I accepted this role, as it is the acknowledgement of the achievements within the Youth Section that have been accomplished over the last few years. The Youth Section is dedicated to promoting football for all and we have seen an increasing number of youngsters wishing to come and play with us. Our Youth Coaches are amazing; dedicated and professional. They have been led and supported by a uniquely devoted Youth Committee in Tony Hayward, Chairman; Kate Brett, Welfare Officer and Leah Bewsher, Treasurer. They are all a huge credit to the town and I am very proud to have been part of their journey.

I hope that I can continue to work hard in my new role to bring the senior parts of our brilliant club just as close to the Hadleigh community. We have an U18s, U23s, The Dragons (formerly the Brettsiders), 1st team and Veterans who all bring a different aspect of football to our club and I’d like to see each of those teams succeed in footballing but also in connecting with our community, so that everyone can enjoy their successes.

Very recently, we have restarted girls football, with our brand new U11s Girls, starting in September under Manager and Coach, Matt French. This is an exciting and timely progression for us, as the number of girls applying to play with us has hugely increased since last year’s women’s successes in the professional game.

ADMINISTRATOR NEEDED FOR ST. MARY’S CHURCH, HADLEIGH

The role of Benefice Administrator is currently for 20 hours a week, spread over 4 days, but there may be some flexibility with this; the pay is currently £12 per hour.

The new administrator will work primarily for St Mary’s with duties across the benefice to include St Andrew’s Layham and All Saints Shelley. You need to be someone with good IT skills (especially in Word and Outlook) who is able to self-manage and work independently. You need to be a good communicator, and have an eye for detail.

Communication and publicity:

•Maintain benefice diary.

• Deal with day-to-day enquiries by phone, email and in person.

•Compile weekly News-sheet and monthly Magazine.

General administrative tasks:

•Order supplies including stationery, cleaning materials and other church supplies as required.

•All printing, copying, publicity as required (including proofreading);

•Deal with statutory documents as required – returns to the diocese etc.

•Produce, maintain and distribute rotas of volunteers for worship as required.

Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals:

1.Make all administrative arrangements for baptisms, weddings and funerals.

2.Maintain records of BW&F.

Church hire, bookings, events

•Act as point of contact for all concerts and other bookings,

• Complete applications for bar licenses when required

•Concerts and events: ensure that all logistical and administrative arrangements are all in place.

•Provide administrative (and often practical!) support to church fundraising events as required. *************************************

For more details and to register your interest contact, in the first instance, Claire at office@stmaryshadleigh.co.uk

Please send a CV with a covering note and your contact details.

Additionally, I’d like to invite the wider community to come and see the amazing facilities we are so fortunate to have. A cozy, clean and welcoming Clubhouse with kitchen and catering facilities and licensed bar. We have lots of plans for events to put on over the coming months, so please look out for our news in the Hadleigh Community News. We’d love to share our fortunate circumstances with everyone, so if you have an upcoming birthday, anniversary, wedding - do please come and see us, we’d love to help!

My final comment is to thank the outgoing Chairman, John Chenery. John is a longstanding supporter of Hadleigh Utd with years and years of experience at the Club in all kinds of positions. The Club owes him its deepest gratitude for such unwavering support for so long. John will remain at the Club as a prominent member of the organisation going forward. This is very important because whilst there must be evolution at the Club, we must also ensure that we don’t lose sight of our living history - to quote Newton - “We stand on the shoulders of giants ….”.

Sign Up for Hadleigh’s Cycle Sportive on 10th September

Hadleigh Cycling Club’s 7th

Gayford Flyer sportive will take place on Sunday, 10th September. It costs £15 to enter and this includes refreshments and music at

The George. We are very keen to encourage riders to try out the many lightlytrafficked roads around the town. This year’s Flyer will have two signed routes of around 60 and 30 miles on mostly quiet roads close to Hadleigh, with some great views and the odd hill. Details on how to enter can be found www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk . There will be no entries on the day. The event is open to young cyclists provided they are accompanied by an adult.

Since its launch in 2015, nearly 1200 cyclists have signed up and completed the sportive. One participant commented: “The route was fantastic! A bit challenging with all the hills in the second half :) and therefore even more rewarding. It was such fun to be able to do an organised ride again. Especially on such a beautiful day. Thanks to all the volunteers and the organisation for putting all the time and effort in.”

This year’s Gayford Flyer will take place in the week that over 100 of the world’s best cyclists race through Hadleigh in the Tour of Britain. Stage 5 (Thursday, 7th) will begin and end in Felixstowe. Exact timings aren’t confirmed yet, but spectators will see riders race down Benton Street onto the High Street

On Tuesdays, our Junior Club meets at Hadleigh Community Primary at 18:30 to 19:30, with a monthly ride on the Railway Walk to help our young riders to build their confidence to ride in the ‘wild’. Our coaches will work with riders on specific skills and techniques to help them improve.

On Sundays: our Club Ride departs at 9.00 from The George Inn, High Street, Hadleigh. This ride is normally about 30 to 40 miles at a speed of approximately 15 mph, depending on the preferences of the ride leader and the capabilities of the group. Our rides are 'no-drop'. That means you won't be left behind (unless you choose to be), but the group may split into smaller groups of different speeds if that makes it easier to handle. Keep an eye out for the details from the ride leader nearer the time.

The rides and activities are weather dependant so, if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub Twitter @HadleighCycling Instagram hadleighcc or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

The Hadleigh Historian

Issue 77 (August – September 2023)

London’s ‘Big Stink’ was in 1858 and Hadleigh had a similar problem from 1866 until 1881. Owing to the lack of proper drains and sewers, untreated effluent was running along the town’s open gutters and accumulating outside the Shoulder of Mutton at No.124-124A High Street. As Hadleigh’s local authority at the time was unwilling to take the initiative to deal with the problem, solicitor William Ffennell, who had the ‘The nuisance of great magnitude’ passing his home in High Street, mounted a campaign for something to be done. Eventually, he bypassed Hadleigh Local Board of Health and appealed directly to Whitehall. Find out what was causing the problem and how it was eventually solved by a court case.

The story of ‘Holbecks: its park and its people’ has reached the mid-19th century, when the mansion house became the permanent home for members of the Rowley family and the park was first opened for events such as Hadleigh Farmers’ Club and Agricultural Association’s spring meeting, now known as Hadleigh May Show. Also, Hadleigh Amateur Athletic Sports were held on August Bank Holidays, with promenade concerts and firework displays in the evenings.

Nearly one hundred years ago, everyone in Hadleigh would have known what RAOB stood for as there was a lodge of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes in the town, which held amusement days for youngsters. Of four photographs featured in ‘Special Occasions’, two show participants gathering in Market Place before they marched along High Street behind the town band to Bridge Street, where fun and games would be waiting for them on Gas Works Meadow.

How is your knowledge of the town’s history as there are two more questions from ‘‘Binkie’ Bacon’s Quiz of Hadleigh’? This was originally set sometime in the late 1960s by Raymond Bacon, pharmacist of Boots the Chemist at No. 57 High Street. Jane Richardson now challenges us to complete the sentence with a date before she ably answers with further details of the scenes depicted.

The bright-coloured cottage on the front cover of Issue 77 shows a property in Angel Street that makes a tenuous link between Hadleigh and the battle of Trafalgar as it was once owned by Lieutenant Thomas Pinto, who was present in the Napoleonic Wars at Admiral Nelson’s great victory on 21 October 1805. Issue 77 is now available price £4 at Avis the Newsagent and The Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer. A one-year subscription (6 issues and postage) costs £32 from Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP7 7BG (01449 740673).

Surviving Winter In Hadleigh

We are a small local charity, registered with the Charity Commission, serving the people of Hadleigh and surrounding villages. The charity is run by six local, unpaid trustees. Our aim is to help alleviate poverty. Over the past year we responded to 24 requests for help, paying out £2,800 mainly to people who could not afford to top-up their electricity and gas pre-payment meter cards during the fuel crisis. Against that we received donations of £835.

Can you please help us by making a donation? Our bank details are: Sort Code: 30-13-52, Account Number: 18595168, Account Name: SURVIVING WINTER IN HADLEIGH. Thank you.

Hadleigh Men’s Shed is Up and Running

For a long time research has shown the negative impact of loneliness and isolation on a person’s health and wellbeing. Recently we have seen more evidence come to light that shows loneliness and isolation can be as hazardous to our health as obesity and excessive smoking. Surveys from mental health charities are finding that millions of people report feeling lonely on a daily basis. Men typically find it more difficult to build social connections than women and unlike women of a similar age, less older men have networks of friends and rarely share personal concerns about health and personal worries.

It is not the case for all men, but for some, when retirement comes, it can feel like personal identity and purpose is lost. With this in mind a new community group was formed late last year. Hadleigh Men’s Shed was established to combat isolation and loneliness amongst the men of the town.

Sheds are about meeting like-minded people and having someone to share your worries with. They are about having fun, sharing skills and knowledge and gaining a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. As a by-product of all of that they reduce isolation and feelings of loneliness, they allow men to deal with mental health challenges more easily and remain independent, they rebuild communities and in many cases, they save men’s lives. Setting up a group of this nature requires quite a bit of work, but the volunteer shed management committee are an enthusiastic bunch and much progress has been made. The group are currently working out of temporary accommodation which has very kindly been provided by Richard and Sue Finch. The group have a growing membership and are currently open four times a week. Our ethos is simple; we are a community-based, not for profit group with friendship at our core. Our aim is to improve the health and wellbeing of local men.

If you want more info please email us hadleighmensshed@gmail.com or find us on Facebook. A warm welcome awaits

James Cartlidge writes

Whilst we have just celebrated the NHS’s 75th anniversary, we all know that investment and innovation are key to ensure the long-term sustainability of the health service. I therefore strongly welcome the new NHS Long Term Workforce Plan - the biggest staff programme for a generation - backed by more than £2.4 billion in government investment. The Plan sets out how the NHS will address existing vacancies; meet the challenges of a growing and ageing population by recruiting and retaining hundreds of thousands more staff over the next 15 years; and reform the way they work to make the most of digital and technological innovations. Most importantly, we are making real progress locally with the brand-new West Suffolk Hospital confirmed as a priority within the Government’s commitment to 40 new hospitals, with a complete rebuild agreed and outline planning now also in place.

Recent visits have included attending the Hadleigh Deanery Fete and Dog Show last month. As readers may know, the event was fundraising to Save St Mary’s, a Hadleigh Community Project to refurbish and future proof the buildings comprising the Church, Deanery Tower, and Guildhall. The project is set to cost approximately £3.5 million, and I will be doing my bit by taking part in this year’s Suffolk Historic Churches annual Ride n’ Stride sponsored bike ride in aid of St Mary’s – my fifth such ride in five years. If you wish to support our local Hadleigh heritage, all donations are most gratefully received, you can find my fundraising page at: www.jamescartlidge.com/sponsor

Whilst this is traditionally holiday season, I am well aware that some of the challenges that we’ve faced in recent months have proved stubborn, not least around the cost of living. As such, it’s important for me – as your Member of Parliament – to recognise all those who go above and beyond, in our communities, to make a difference. From helping out in vaccination centres, to sorting piles of donations to be sent to Ukraine, our cumulative community effort has been enormous. And it's for this exact reason that I’m announcing my 2023 'Community Champion’ nominations. From school governors to litter pickers, to parish councillors, to community speed watch, our society depends on volunteers who often go unappreciated.

If you know someone who has made a real difference to your local area, please nominate them to become this year’s Community Champion at: www.jamescartlidge.com/communitychampion

Repair Cafe Hadleigh

We continue to hold our Repair Café every other month and the next one is on Saturday 19th August. We have now held 3 Repair Cafés and coincidentally we have had 21 people attend at each session and they have brought in a total of 65 items for repair or advice.

We are hugely grateful for our volunteers who offer their skills at the Repair Café. We are always looking for extra volunteers as not all volunteers can attend each time, we welcome people with skills in all areas such as carpentry, general repairs, soldering, sewing etc. We would also like volunteers who can offer jewellery/watch repairs or small electrical repairs as our current electrical volunteer is very busy and we would like to spread the load.

If you are interested in volunteering either with a skill or to help in the Café, please contact the Town Council on 01473 823884 or email Wendy on townclerk@hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk

Please check out the Hadleigh Town Council website https://hadleightowncouncil.gov.uk/ and our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/HadleighTC) for the most up to date information and what services we are offering at each session

CCLL – The Helping Hand for Ukraine & Online Charity Shop

Thursday 6th July the 6 children from Ukraine arrived after a very last minute panic with Visas being received only the afternoon before travel was due. The children had to cross into Poland and it took 13 hours to get through the border arriving at their accommodation in Lublin at 3:00 am. After only 3 hours sleep they had to set off for Warsaw to go to the Visa Application Centre. I am sure you can imagine how very tired they were on arrival in Mid Suffolk.

The children come from the area of Borodyanka and you only have to google this to see it is one of the worst hit areas of Ukraine with much of the town being completely razed to the ground by the Russian invasion. The children come from families who have lost their homes due to being bombed and are having to live with relatives in very cramped conditions. Two of the fathers are soldiers on the front line, another a fireman and another now an invalid having been injured as a soldier.

We have a program of activities arranged for them but most important is for this time away from the war to help with their recovery from the stress of living with constant air raids and not being able to live anything resembling a normal life. Even most of education is now carried out remotely due to the lack of school buildings that remain in a safe enough condition for the children to attend. A big thank you must go out to those people who have donated clothing & shoes, sponsored activities and generally done what they can to help support the children during this visit. Arriving with nothing we are supplying everything they need now and also to hopefully take home some clothing for the winter to come and larger items to grow into.

I am sure everyone is aware how much everything has gone up in price and without this support we would have really struggled to finance this visit. To finish on a more positive not, at the time of writing they have only been here three days but already the quiet, pale and timid children are starting to relax, are smiling and playing – eating everything in sight and improving day by day.

Thank you is not enough, there are not words to describe our gratitude.

The faculty or legal consent for the Vestry has been applied for. The official procedures to secure the experts, who will carry out the work, have already been completed so the refurbishment can begin as soon as consent is given. The work, which is expected to last approximately three months, will result in a state-of-the-art facility to house the Church’s many treasured vestments. Discussions are underway with UK Power Networks to upgrade the power in the Church from 100 to 200amps. The estimated cost is £35k. This will enable the favoured combined heating and lighting chandeliers to function efficiently when required. Although the cost is high it will still be considerably less than the alternatives for this massive expanse; underfloor heating, separate lighting and air source heat pumps.

In readiness for future stages of the Church’s renewal the Architects are preparing the planning application for an exterior extension. This will discreetly house the essentials i.e. WC, kitchen facilities plus all-purpose meeting rooms. Suffolk Historic Churches Trust (SHCT) is running their popular annual fundraising event Ride & Stride, Pedal and Drive (vintage and classic cars) on 9th September. MP James Cartlidge will be participating. 50% of the money he raises will go to St Mary’s, Hadleigh and rest to the SHCT to whom we will apply for grant. Although the final route is still at the planning stage, he is hoping to cycle from St Mary’s to the Shotley Peninsula and back. He is looking for local sponsors so if you wish to support his heroic efforts, please visit www.jamescartlidge.com/sponsor for a link to his Just Giving page. Finally, we would love to hear from any enthusiastic IT guru who would be willing to assist with an eye-catching promotion of our community effort via the St Mary’s website. http://stmaryshadleigh.co.uk/index.php/st-mary-s Interested? Everybody loves to see a meteor shooting across the night sky and all through the year you can witness sporadic meteors which appear to come from any direction at any time, but at certain intervals of the year more organised meteors can be seen in what is called meteor showers.

Meteor showers are created by comets that make close passes to Earth as they race in and away from perihelion, or their closest pass to the Sun. For example, the comet responsible for the Perseids is a comet named 109P/Swift-Tuttle which was discovered in 1862 but was originally observed as far back as 1737. The designation for the comet can be deciphered as follows; 109P/ indicates that it was the 109th comet of periodicity to be discovered. A comet must be observed on at least two separate returns to be given a designation and a definitive orbit to be determined and have an orbital period of under 200 years to be classed periodical. Swift-Tuttle refer to the discoverers, in this case both astronomers were American Lewis Swift and Horace Parnell Tuttle.

A comet can be imagined to be a dirty snowball hurtling through space on their trajectories taking them from deep frozen space until they return to the proximity of the Sun where Solar radiation warms them and volatile ices sublimate from their surfaces which also contains dust that create the distinctive tails associated with comets.

In the case of comet Swift-Tuttle, it is not so much a snowball it’s more a mountain as it is one of the largest known comets at an impressive size of 26 km in diameter. It also passes close to the Earth when it comes to perihelion and at closest can pass just 84,000 miles from us which in cosmic terms is a near miss. The comet last appeared in 1992 and will then return next in 2126. The dust lost at each return of the comet spreads around its orbit and due to that orbit passing close to Earth we pass through the densest part of the debris early on in August every year. These micro-sized pieces of dust hit the upper atmosphere at relative velocity of 17 km/s or 38,00 mph this causes great friction between the small body an atmosphere which leads to friction and the particles being vaporised some 40 miles above our heads but not before we see them as a brief glowing train speedily crossing the sky.

One of the best showers to occur during the year is that of the Perseids which can be seen from late July to late August each year with the peak of the showers activity, or best chance to see numerous meteors an hour, occurring on the night/morning of August 12/13.

On this night/morning one can expect to visually observe around 80 meteors an hour on a good clear night with no moon interference and no light pollution, obviously if the moon is near or at full phase and you live in a built up area your rate of meteors per hour will be greatly decreased. For 2023 the moon will be a slender crescent with just 6 percent of its surface illuminated and with it rising at 01.42 conditions will be perfect for observing.

The Perseids are some of the most beautiful meteors that you can observe and appear as soon as darkness falls in the direction of the constellation of Perseus which rises in the NE at this time. Also, this is a perfect shower to get all the family involved. The children will be on school holidays and it could be a great chance to offer an incentive to the child that sees the most meteors over the evening. It's also a great opportunity to learn a few of the constellations too.

Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Report

Hadleigh Quarry The operators of the quarry submitted Planning applications SCC/0091/19/VOC and B/12/01244/VOC that were considered by Suffolk’s Development & Regulation Committee last 6th June.

In my statement I stated that the increase in maximum average number of daily HGV movements into and out of the quarry to 60 per day (30 in and 30 out) would be additional hazards for users of the A1071 Hadleigh by-pass. This 15-fold increase in slow moving HGV traffic would also necessitate widening works to be carried out on Aldham Mill Hill. The committee voted in favour to approve both applications.

My intention now is to have SCC improve the Aldham Mill Hill /A1071 junction for safety. The very least I expect is repainting of the road markings, but I hope for more significant measures to be installed where practicable. The operator’s agent has spoken to me and said that they would assist with repainting and supply new signage, and they would hold consultation meetings with residents to help address our concerns.

It has been predicted that extraction of minerals from the quarry will become exhausted early next year 2024. Over several years, the quarrying area will then be backfilled with inert material and returned to productive farmland. Therefore, this land should be returned to agricultural activity and the landscape restored, possibly by the end of this decade.

£10 million new funding to fix residential roads. Suffolk has announced that local road surfaces in villages and residential areas in Suffolk should be blitzed as part of a new £10 million programme. The extra funding will nearly double Suffolk Highways’ £11 million annual roads maintenance budget, but be targeted at smaller residential streets which are typically maintained less frequently than busier A and B roads. This major £10 million investment will be spent over the next 20 months is to improve roads across the county where people live; those smaller roads often in estates or off the beaten track in our villages that are rutted and in need of some love and attention. I look forward to seeing how some of this new money can be exploited for the benefit of our town’s residential areas and streets.

Toppesfield Bridge and Duke Street I reported the damage caused to the bridge last May and followed this up later that month when I met with highways officers at Endeavour House. SCC has confirmed that an inspector visited the site and quantified the extent of damage. Due to the Scheduled/Listed status of the bridge they will need gain consent from Historic England (HE) for the details/materials to be used in the repairs, and therefore it’s likely to be some time before the repairs will be undertaken. They will also take the opportunity to review what other maintenance works might be required to the bridge to see if there is any merit in coordinating these with the repairs required to the damaged parapet.

One success at this location is their inspector agreeing that the existing yellow lines on Duke Street do require repainting and this should be carried out in 34 months’ time.

Councillor Surgery I hold my surgery on the third Saturday of the month with the next being at 11:00 on Saturday 19th August 2023 in the anti-room of the Royal British Legion Club, George Street. French’s Care Haven

Hello to our readers, I hope as always you have all been keeping well. Thank you to everyone who came along to our open day, I hope you enjoyed the BBQ and meeting the horses, donkeys and Lucy, we are hoping to have another in September, so keep a look out for that date.

In the photo - Daren, Carmen, Lee and dog Molly relaxing at the end of the day, on our open day.

There were lots of tears and laughter at our Psychic night and the lady who spoke, Sharon from Essex Spiritual Centre did well entertaining the people who came, thank you again to those who joined us on the night. Next month, one of volunteer Jasmine is doing something completely crazy!

She is wing-walking on an aeroplane to raise money for our rescued animals. Please support Jasmine in this adventure, by using her just giving page. https://www.justgiving.com/.../jasmine-lait-1681227734400

In September on Saturday 9th we have a Barn Dance that our ladies have organised. Put this date in your diary and final details will be in the next magazine addition, as well as on our website, you can also find more details on our Frenchs Care Haven Facebook page as well.

I have spoken recently about the widespread problem people are having with their horses and donkeys regarding laminitis, which is mainly caused by high amounts of sugar in the grass. We have been hit hard with this like no other year before, it has gone crazy. The vets and farriers are saying in all their years they have never seen anything like it. Laminitis is awful, it is extremely painful and can be deadly, to that point a horse can end up having to be put down, because the pedal bone in the foot rotates and comes through the sole of the foot. Our changes in weather that we are having nowadays, is causing havoc for these animals, along with the worlds wildlife. Our vet bills are near £4,000 at the moment and we are struggling financially with this, so please bear with me when I ask for your support in events we do, or helping us with donations, your input could make a real difference for our Charity. The other photo is of our lovely donkey Frankie, he is such a handsome young man.

French’s 100 club has just re-started with tickets £30 a number, raffle ticket or tickets that you buy will last for a year, where there will be a raffle draw once a month with 3 prizes drawn each time, first prize is £50, so come on let’s get you in our monthly draw, please contact Sharon for your raffle tickets. Call Sharon on: 07999051401 or email Sharon: frenchs.100club@gmail.com

If you are semi-retired or retired and have a couple of hours a week to spare to help as a volunteer, Please contact me – Jann. We have some nice people in our small team and a lovely environment around nature, the horses and donkeys to work in, so come along and join us. Plus if you have any ideas, or would like to help organise an event, please let me know, you could make my day!

French’s is a charity on your doorstep, can you help, either with time, donations, or sponsorship. You are welcome to come along and meet our animals. Call me for an appointment.

Is the New Pitch Costing the Earth?

SUREFIXSUREFIX SUREFIX

Remember the swallows on the telegraph wires? If you’re over 50 you’ll know how many of them there used to be and we can all see how few there are now. So what have swallows got to do with the artificial football pitch proposed in a fullpage advert in July’s community news? Well sadly, artificial football pitches pose threat to the wildlife that lives in our rivers. This is because artificial pitches need a bouncy infill, called rubber crumb, to make them react like a normal grass pitch. Rubber crumb is made by pulverising old tyres into a soft crumb-like material which is safe (as far as we know) for humans but is well known to be toxic to rivers. Every year each artificial pitch will leak around 500 – 700 kg of rubber crumb as it is carried off the pitch in boots, clothes and rainwater. Almost all of this will end up in local watercourses. For us here in Hadleigh this poses a real threat to the river Brett which lies less than 50 metres from the football ground.

PVCU, ALUMINIUM, HARDWOOD, SECONDARY AND CHOICES OF COLOURS AVAILABLE

FULL REPAIRS UNDERTAKEN ON EXISTING DOUBLE GLAZING HANDLES, LOCKS, TRIMS, MISTY/BROKEN SEALED UNITS, DROPPED DOORS ETC.

WE CAN ALSO SUPPLY ALL MATERIALS FOR DIY / TRADE

The pitch will only last 12-15 years before it needs replacing but over this time some 7-8 tons of rubber crumb is likely to end up in the Brett where it is likely to destroy much of the river’s bugs and insects. There are alternative approaches: You can use organic infills but they are expensive; and you can reduce leakage by making sure everyone brush their clothes and empty their boots every single time they leave the pitch (very hard to enforce), but there are no easy answers to the dilemmas of rubber crumb. So we are faced with a choice between two things both of which are good: better sporting facilities or a healthy river. And as so often nowadays the choice is also between the things that we humans want (cheap energy, allweather pitches) and the things that are good for the planet (less CO2, less forests cut down, healthy rivers).

Sometimes it feels like the consequences of these choices – the droughts, the fires, the shrinking icecaps – happen to other people in far away places. But the swallows tell a different story, one much closer to home. Destroy the habitats here and we destroy the wildlife here. If we don’t look after the Brett, the dragon flies and the kingfishers will likely go the way of our swallows. So the advert about the pitch was right – it’s really important to have your say. Tell us what you think by emailing HEAT (hadleighheat@hotmail.com) and we will forward your thoughts on to the council

Hadleigh Garden Club

SUMMER SOCIAL, 19TH JUNE - The Summer Social was held at Hillside, Union Hill, Semer a beautiful 10.5 acre garden which members were able to explore before being provided with light refreshments by Sue Mordey who kindly offered her garden for the event. There was a plant sale of all left over plants from the NGS opening of Sue’s garden on 18th June, many of which were provided by the Garden Club members and some donated on the night were available for members to purchase with the money raised going to the NGS's many cancer related charities. The raffle prizes were all plants which included a pale blue clematis, a white day lily and more. The Chairperson, Dave De Negro presented Sue with some lilies for her garden as a "thank you" for holding the event. Look out for Sue's open garden date in 2024 as it is well worth a visit.

JULY MEETING - The members enjoyed an excellent talk by Roger Hance on "Wildflowers and Orchids of the Countryside" which was beautifully illustrated by Roger's excellent photography and oral descriptions. Roger explained that bluebells are native to Western Europe and due to the large amount of ancient woodlands in the UK we have the most prolific sites. He also explained the insects that were specific to certain plants and their habitat. It was such an interesting talk we hope to have Roger visit us again in 2024.

AUGUST MEETING - Dr. Ian Bedford, an Ecologist as seen of TV Gardeners' World is our speaker for 14th August so why not come along at 7.30 in the Guildhall opposite St. Mary's Church. The talk is "Garden Bugs, Cohabit, Conserve or Control”. The usual raffle, plants for sale and refreshments will be available. The Competition is 4 tomatoes on a plate. Members £2 and nonmembers £4.

For further information contact Angie at hadleighgardenclub@gmail or 07946 744 457.

The full page HCN article on ‘3G Pitch for Hadleigh’ makes an interesting case

Hadleigh does need all year round training facilities. Our Girls and Boys can gain fitness and learn the benefit of building a team spirit. However, a 3G pitch does not increase the training area. It replaces the existing grass. When the land is flooded it cannot be used. The solution lies in preventing the flooding that could sweep the crumb infill into the Brett River.

Hadleigh and Babergh Councillors should work together on replacing the Tinkers Lane sluice gates. The Environment Agency has taken over managing them, but not efficiently. If the sluice gates were replaced and the fall in water levels used to generate electricity, then the flooding would abate. The HTC should take the initiative and produce a professional plan adopting an holistic approach. The income from the power generation together with grants available would help fund the capital cost. This book is an autobiography, which takes us through my life from early childhood in Ipswich, through education and training, and the various travels connected with my work as a Hydrometeorologist.

I could not have dreamt up my career, nor did I wake up one day with a burning desire to be a hydrometeorologist. Nevertheless, over a career spanning 50 years, I have worked in 12 countries apart from the UK, which in chronological order have been:

Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Switzerland, India, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Mozambique and Ireland. I spent various periods in these places, some for as long as four years, and

I made a number of short visits to some European countries. Starting with hydrometry and water resources and ending up with flood forecasting and flood management planning, as I moved from post to post over the years, I accrued various professional qualifications, and at the height of my working career was a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society, Chartered Meteorologist, Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management, Chartered Environmentalist and Professional Engineer (Papua New Guinea). This led to a very crowded business card! High-Points of my career have been as head of a national water resources operation and a key appointment in our national flood forecasting and warning service, as well as being a consultant to the World Meteorological Organisation, I feel I can be reasonably proud and content.

I hope the account of my career will interest some and maybe encourage people to think about weather and the water environment in a rational rather than an hysterical way.

Hadleigh Community Primary School

SATs Results: Hadleigh Community Primary School Celebrates Best Ever SATs Results. We are incredibly proud to be able to announce that our 2022/23 cohort of Year 6 pupils have achieved the schools highest ever SATs results. These results are:

The children have worked so hard this year and have been a credit, not just to us as a school, but their parents. The Year 6 teachers - Mr Bassett, Mr Banham and Mrs Peters have been celebrating with them once the results came in, in July. We are very pleased with their efforts in prepping the pupils, but also credit goes to the whole team at the school, who have nurtured and developed these pupils over the last seven years.

School Camp Returns! School camp returned this year for our Year 5 and 6 pupils who were able to experience 2 days and 1 night under canvas; this is part of our outdoor action and adventure learning.

The pupils worked on numerous activities which focused on teamwork, problem solving and resilience. Much fun was had by allparticularly during the water games. Camp fire singing, hide and seek, cricket, making and cooking bread, woodland art and daily chores were all part of camp life. Year 3 and 4 students also had the opportunity to visit and take part in their own Forest School activities. This was a fantastic experience for all the children. Thank you to Mrs Lee and Mr Peters for leading camp. We would also like to thank all the additional members of staff, parent volunteers and the community for supporting this amazing experience.

Sports Day 2023: Our annual Sports Days have been completed with many traditional races. The children from Nursery to Year 6 marked the annual events with an opening ceremony that involved gymnasts, dancers, drummers, ukulele players, singers and performers, giving a real carnival atmosphere. P.E. Ted, alongside School Council, opened the event. The children competed against each other in their coloured houses for points. All the pupils were amazing as they celebrated our school sport values in front of large crowds in the sunshine. The overall winners of Sports Day 2023 were the Yellow Yetis. Thank you to Mr Peters, Mr Djemal, Mrs Kirk, Mr Betts, Miss Cook and the HSA for making this event possible.

Fundraising: 17 Staff members from Hadleigh Community Primary Community School took part in a Pretty Muddy Race for life event on Sunday June 18th 2023 at Trinity Park, Ipswich. This is a 5k muddy assault course involving running through large muddy pipes, crawling under cargo nets, climbing walls and rope ladders. We all looked as the title suggests 'pretty muddy' towards the end! There was lots of laughter and fun to be had, but as for the serious stuff we managed to fund raise £1910 for cancer research plus £370 in gift aid. A huge achievement and a very well deserved cause. Well done HCPS!

Parish Council

Below are the main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting of 28 June 2023

• District Council The £12,000 raised for the Ipswich Blossom Appeal, the chosen charity of the former Babergh Chairman Cllr Kathryn Grandon, was a record amount. The new coalition administration at Babergh was settling in well; Cllr David Busby was the elected leader for the first year. In response to a question from Cllr Laing concerning the restructuring of the Babergh offices in Endeavour House, Cllr Ward confirmed that this had cost in the region of £100,000, offset by a reduction in rent and business rates; the office space was now more flexible and facilitated more efficient working. In response to a question about penalties for littering, Cllr Ward said fly tipping should be reported to Babergh as offenders could be prosecuted.

• County Council SCC had announced a one-off support grant of £2,000 for Ukrainian refugees moving from a host into their own accommodation. New funding had been announced to repair residential roads, mainly targeted at smaller streets. GH confirmed that concerns about water leaks should be referred to Anglian Water. With regard to improving services for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), Cllr Keeble stressed the importance of one-to-one teaching; however, this was not always possible due to the lack of trained teachers. She suggested that funding should be ringfenced for recruitment and training. She was pleased to note the council’s commitment to library services in Suffolk.

• Co-option Councillors agreed to co-opt Gillie Cranfield. The Clerk had asked SALC about bespoke training for the whole council, following the recent elections.

• Finance Sections 1 and 2 (Governance & Accounting Statements) of the Annual Return for 2022-23 were approved. It was agreed to review the practice of holding funds for other bodies at the July meeting.

• Speeding Cllr Curran’s update was noted. The SID was moved regularly; however, he said that signs in some other villages did not appear to move, despite SCC’s recommendation that they should. Cllr Hall asked him to forward a list of villages to her. The ANPR equipment would be deployed in Layham from 11–18 September 2023. Cllr Hall suggested that it might be worth considering Community Speedwatch again.

• Traffic calming Cllr Laing’s paper was noted. Cllr Hall said it would be useful to have the SID data so that SCC could look at building a case for traffic calming measures. In response to a comment that there should be a rationale for NOT introducing such measures, she suggested an onsite meeting might be useful.

• Village signs The project had been started some time ago; it was noted that it was not a Parish Council initiative, although the PC supported the idea in principle. It was agreed that there should be a working party, with a representative from the PC who would report back to councillors. Mike Woods had confirmed that the Layham Local History Group would be pleased to be involved.

Defibrillators There is now a defibrillator located on the wall at Warwick Cottage, Stoke Road, Lower Layham. As with our other defibrillators, the cabinet is unlocked and does not require a code to access it.Just a reminder that we now have 5 defibrillators in the village – familiarise yourself with these locations to save time at a moment of need:

July winners were: £25 Ticket No 32 Byham, £15 Ticket No 51 Adams Social Club We all enjoyed Father Jo’s talk on July 3. He explored his journey from John Lewis to Lincoln Theological College. His physical journey from parishes in London and Essex to Suffolk was described with many entertaining stories on the way. His love of, and interest in people is obvious. There was much laughter and a resounding round of applause. We will be inviting Father Jo back next year to speak about his musical journey especially his interest in Heavy Metal.

Hadleigh’s History on your Doorstep

This red brick building dominating the High Street at the corner of Duke Street is recognisable as the Hadleigh Library. On this site in times past was the White Horse inn, but this was demolished to make way in 1855 for the new Hadleigh Police Station and built at a believed cost of £1,100 as number 29 High Street, Hadleigh. This station served the town until 1984 when it closed and moved into new premises in Magdalen Road. Major conversion works then took place to create a new Hadleigh Library with only the four outer walls remaining of the original building. The library after being previously at Toppesfield Hall, moved in 1967 to a temporary building in George Street next to East House. It was during 1984 when the new Hadleigh Library works were completed and opened to the public and including additional features of a meeting room and a lift. A refurbishment took place in 2004, and in 2017 the library celebrated its 30th anniversary at the High Street site. The library today offers a wide range of facilities for the community.

The story of Hadleigh Guildhall

Hadleigh’s magnificent Guildhall has been deemed of exceptional national and international significance. The Hadleigh Society History Group has compiled a fascinating timeline of the history of the Guildhall from their research over several years. They will be telling the story of this building using selected extracts covering the 700 plus years of its life and the important role it has played – and continues to play - in the development of the town.

Why join a Choir? (Reflections from a Tenor)

A good question… You will be told it reduces stress, that it’s a workout for your brain, it’s uplifting and it’s an exercise in teamwork.

All of that is true and very important but the best reason to join Hadleigh Community Choir is that we have FUN and you get to meet great new people.

We moved to Hadleigh in January 2020 from Essex intending to get involved in the local Community and, of course, the pandemic delayed our plans. Having done some singing in the past, I was keen to join a local choir, and having researched local groups, joined Hadleigh Community Choir in September 2022, and have since sung in both the Christmas and Summer Concert, which was a wonderful experience.

It doesn’t really matter whether you have sung before or can or can’t read music, you will find the Choir very welcoming and the other members, and Choir leadership, will help you find the right place for your voice, whether you want to sing high or low, and give you the opportunity to sing some wonderful songs. There is no compulsion to do so but if you wish you will also have the opportunity to sing in various concerts and shows during the year and yes, we also make some time for social events.

So, if you have thought to yourself ‘what’s it like to sing in a choir?’ or just enjoying singing in the car (or even the shower), hum along with tunes, come along and join us and experience what it is like to have voices singing all around you. You may get carried away by the sound…

Hadleigh Community Choir rehearses every Thursday evening from 7.15 until 9.00 at Hadleigh United Reformed Church, Market Place, Hadleigh. We come back from our summer break in September – the rehearsals in September are open rehearsals for everyone to come and try out what it is like so come along and sing with us, you won’t regret it.

Hadleigh Library News

The Friends of Hadleigh Library hosted a successful launch event on Saturday 15th July where lots of cake was enjoyed! Friends Group fundraising plays a key part in our ability to improve library facilities and offer that bit more for the community. A big thank you to everyone who came along to support us. Two competitions were unveiled which will run for the duration of the summer –can you guess how many sweets and Lego bricks are in the jars? Have a go to be in with a chance of winning them!

We have had an exciting new arrival in the library too. Golden Labrador is part of the Suffolk Libraries PAWS- itivity fundraising campaign and will be with us for the summer. Proudly supported by the Friends of Hadleigh library, Golden Labrador has been created and sponsored by the team at John Grose Accident and Repair Centre. Do come along to the library and say hello. 1 Welcome: The Chair welcomed everyone

2 Report Of The Last Meeting: Accepted

3 Matters Arising: None

4 Standard Updates

4.1 Hadleigh Town Council (HTC) Six councillors were elected in May with a further eight having been co-opted since, filling 14 out of 15 seats. The Youth Council is elected at the High School and is run and funded by HTC. The Youth Council is organising a Youth Festival for Friday 1 Sept from 2pm8pm at Layham Road Sports Ground.

Following three successful events, the Repair Café will run every other month – next 19 August.

Neighbourhood Plan is progressing well and is on HTC’s website. The Christmas event will be on Saturday 2 December, with the Craft Fair starting later to dovetail with Christmas Market timings.

4.2 Babergh & Mid Suffolk District Council (BDC) The free Family Fun Day is on Friday 28 July in Cox’s Park. This is one of five in the district and will run from 10am – 2pm. All are welcome.

The Tour of Britain, Stage 5 (out of 8), will come through Hadleigh on Thursday 7 September, exact timings TBC. As much support as possible, along the High Street will be most welcome – the last race (in 2017) was hugely well supported and was an engaging and exciting event. High Street businesses are supporting the event and visitors from all over the UK are expected to come. It will have national press and TV coverage. There will be rolling road closures with warnings two weeks in advance along the route. Up to date information is on the Tour of Britain Stage Five website.

At Babergh’s next full council there will be a motion against the siting of further overground pylons.

Surveys are being carried out on anti-social behaviour and how it is affecting Hadleigh residents. BDC/Mid Suffolk take ASB very seriously.

4.3 Visit Hadleigh The pop-up Visitor Information Centre at 46 High Street welcomed over 190 visitors, residents and locals. Grateful thanks were offered to the owner of the property. In addition, the wall paintings and magnificently decorated ceiling of the building (which are rarely seen) were on show to all visitors, along with the Memories of Cedric Morris exhibition. Themed walks with town guides will be publicised soon and can be booked through Jane Snowdon.

Volunteers to help with the Community Gardens will be welcomed every Wednesday from 10am – 12 noon. Details from Jane Snowdon.

4.4 Hadleigh & Boxford Patient Participation Group (PPG) The report was given to the meeting and can be found in the PPG column in each month’s Hadleigh Community News.

4.5 St Marys Church The Faculty Notice for refurbishment of the Vestry is finally on the door of church. The faculty is expected to be issued shortly after 26 July when work will start as soon as possible.

Now that we are sure the chandelier system for heat and light is the right way to go in the church, discussions are underway with UK Power Networks to upgrade the power in St Mary’s from 100amps to 200 amps to future-proof all possible requirements. It is looking like the minimum cost for this could be in the region of £35k. but this, along with the cost of installing the chandeliers will still be significantly cheaper than some other options.

Ipswich Fire crew is coming to visit the church prior to an exercise to “rescue” someone from the bell tower and from the roof. Such rescue would be carried out by Ipswich, Hadleigh and Nayland teams.

Suffolk Historic Churches Trust is running the annual Ride & Stride and James Cartlidge, our MP, is cycling for St Mary’s, Hadleigh. This will be on 9 September – two days after the Tour of Britain rides through. James can be sponsored and we hope to apply for a grant from the Trust.

The Deanery Fete & Dog Show, despite being an exceptionally hot day with the threat of thunderstorms (which did not happen) had a most fantastic afternoon with some 400 people attending. Adults, children and dogs all enjoyed everything that was on offer and a good profit was made to help towards repairs to the church and in support of the work and ministry

undertaken so unselfishly by so many people.

The Administrator is moving on to pastures new so the role needs to be filled (see the ad in Hadleigh Community News). It is currently 20 hours a week and £12 an hour. If you think you might like to apply, do have a conversation with Fr Jo, the current Administrator (Claire) or the Churchwardens (Jess & Jim).

4.6 HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) The Bat Group flourishes and has received a lot of good feedback following June’s HCN article.

The Dairy Farm recovery programme (which has been running for some 50 years now) hosted thirty members of HEAT for a very enjoyable evening tour. Plans continue to develop about the Calais Street green corridor. The Town Clerk, in response to a question, said the Pavilion project at Layham Road Sports Ground is progressing but the 3g Pitch project is in abeyance.

4.7 Cost Of Living Concerns Pop Up meals are being run through the summer holidays at St Mary’s Church every Thursday from 27 July to the end of August from noon till 2pm. All are welcome.

4.8 Benton End There is a survey that Benton End would be most grateful if everyone could undertake as the results of this will form part of their National Lottery Heritage funding bid in the Autumn. Go to https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/FC638C2 or on to their bio on Instagram or in the comments of their Facebook page. Community support is vital to ensure the success of this important heritage facility for Hadleigh.

The next Open House day is on Saturday 19 August. Tours of the house and garden will be run every hour, on the hour from 2pm until 6pm. £15 per person to include a glass of Adnams wine on the terrace and further wine available should you wish to stay on after the tour. Merchandise will be available to buy with funds going towards the restoration and revival of the estate.

5 A O B Jan Devey is still fighting to get something done about the eyesore around the trees in Magdalen Road Car Park. Kathryn Grandon has undertaken to speak with the new councillor(s) with responsibility in this area to progress this.

Kathryn has raised, with James Cartlidge, the important issue of certain drugs being unavailable due to factory shortages. Some cancer drugs and insulin –amongst others – have been unavailable for a time. The closure of railway ticket stations was raised. Ipswich will remain open. Manningtree will close.

Basic IT training for anyone in need is still taking place at Hadleigh Library. It was requested that this facility is more widely publicised.

Next Meeting: Tuesday 8 August 2023 @ 4:15pm Hadleigh Pool and Leisure, Chair: Jan Devey

Our fabulous riders excelled themselves back in June. Nearly everyone participated in the End of Year challenge, with each performance watched and judged by Mary Thornley and the scores collated by our chairman Jan Derbyshire. 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each class received medals, and the winners took home silver cups to be displayed at home until next July. Well done all of you!

All these riders had to start by collecting a letter and taking it to the letter box. Then steer their way in a zig zag to the ‘hen house’ and collect an egg for the basket. A tight figure of eight followed next before a halt between two trees to pick an apple and drop it in the bucket. A short ride towards the halt sign came next, where our riders had to count to five. When they got a “GO” sign off they went to circle right around the duck pond then giving their pony a loose rein, carefully walk down a road to the gate which they had to open themselves and pass through, thanking the ‘farmer’ as they did so.

When taking a dressage test it is customary to dress very smartly and have your pony looking immaculate. Our competitors looked amazing and rose to the challenge brilliantly. We should shout out for the volunteer helpers as well for their patience and encouragement.

So congratulations all round, now you can relax and enjoy the holidays. Have a great summer and see you all back in September!

Hadleigh Parkside Pre-school

This term we said goodbye to our Manager Megan after 14 years, we wish her lots of luck in her new endeavours. We are so pleased to welcome back Chloe as our new manager, she has slotted back into the team so well.

We are a thriving pre-school going from strength to strength, with only a limited number of afternoon places available. We offer so much at our Pre-School we are very much part of the community, with Forest School sessions at the Deanery Gardens, we have an allotment, which has yielded lots of lovely produce this term. We take the children to the local Friday Market to buy our fruit and veg.

We have ‘Jo Jingles’ and Sing and sign’ visiting the Pre-School once a fortnight. We have raised 3 chickens this term from eggs, a wonderful experience for the children. We have high staff ratios in the Pre-School which enables quality interactions with the children. We wish our older children all the best going into School in September, and look forward to welcoming lots of new little ones in the new term.

We are in the planning stage to extend our Pre-School at Parkside to include space for babies, The extra space is much needed, as the demand for places has increased, especially with the changes to Government funding next year. We are holding a summer fete on Saturday 9th September, 11am – 1pm. Join us for lots of fun for all the family. There will be a bouncy castle, entertainment, BBQ, raffle, lucky dip, fun games and much more! We are looking for any raffle donations and entertainment for the event if anyone is interested.

If you are interested in our Pre-School for your little one, please do get in touch. Contact Chloe (Manager) or Mica (Deputy Manager) office@hadleighparksidepre-school.co.uk or call us on 01473 827702

Wanted urgently! Any information on George Double

Builder of bridges and pierheads, born Hadleigh (1840-1916) Save our Bridge would like to hear from any surviving relatives of George Double (1840-1916) bridge builder of the River Stour. Any information or photographs that they might share with us would be invaluable.

George Double was born at 132 Benton Street

Hadleigh, the son of Cornelius Double and Susan Spooner from Somerton, Suffolk and the youngest of 7 siblings. He and his wife Emma Sadler had no children, only a surviving niece Ellen Elizabeth Laws. We have researched his fascinating life extensively but have no photograph of him. He worked with John Dixon engineer as his trusty foreman raising Cleopatra’s Needle to upright position and as his site manager building the Hammersmith Bridge. He also built Llandudno Pier and the Cleveland Pier. His remaining bridges on the River Stour are at Boxted, Wormingford. Boxted bridge is under threat of demolition and replacement by Essex Highways and SOB wants Highways to instead repair and strengthen it. Boxted bridge is a complete example of an 1897 arched steel girder bridge and is listed on the Colchester CC local list as a heritage asset. The bridge is much loved in Boxted and a favorite place to stop and enjoy the views over the millpond on the river Stour. Both Sir Alfred Munnings and John Nash were inspired to paint these views. 7700 members of the public have signed the petition . Objectors include Boxted, Stoke by Nayland, Langham and Dedham Parish Councils, Colchester CC, The Dedham Vale Society, SAVE Britain’s Heritage, Suffolk Preservation Society and numerous other conservation and heritage bodies. There is no need for a wider bridge for HGVs as all the surrounding lanes are single lane with passing places. Widening it for these is urban overkill in a quiet rural network of lanes with passing places. A Top Heritage engineer report urges Highways to investigate the repair and strengthening option further which involves far less disruption and cost.

What has happened to some of Hadleigh's footpaths

I set off from my house on Sunday and arrived at the start of my walk from Aldham Road where the footpath sign states 'Aldham Mill and Red Hill'. This path runs beside the bungalow named 'The Vista' but the hedge has grown so much that I was unable to walk it. I had to detour on the grass area which runs parallel with the 'footpath' and rejoin the footpath further down. I reached the A1071 where I cross the road and continue down steps and along footpath but found the path to be taller than me! I had to walk the field edge as far as I could but then had to grapple with the tall grass. Further along my walk the footpath runs beside another dwelling in Red Hill Road - and yet again this was blocked with stinging nettles and brambles - not enjoyable! What has happened to some of Hadleigh's footpaths - loads of people walked during lockdown but now it seems that very few people walk any more. As I understand it, this duty falls with the landowner so I would ask that all farmers/landowners keep the footpaths cut so that people like me can enjoy walking them - it might encourage a few more people to walk again!

Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

Hello, Ollie here to give you a cat’s eye view of SESAW. I have been under house arrest, recovering from an injury in the Spring. Mother decided to keep me in a while longer until most of the birds around the house had raised their young. Now I'm out again and Ken says “about time too!” He’s fed up with competing for the best chair in the kitchen!

Please watch out for nesting hedgehogs when working in the garden. Don’t disturb them but it you see babies or older hogs in daylight do not leave them to get fly strike. If it seems the parent is not caring for the hoglets, bring them to us or your nearest hedgehog rescue. Mother already has several casualties which will be returned to their original site when healthy again. Apart from many cats and dogs, we still have an abundance of rabbits looking for homes. Our rabbit expert, Karen, would be pleased to assist potential owners to choose the right rabbit for their family or help bond a new partner for their existing rabbit. Karen is usually available on Tuesdays and Saturdays but please phone ahead to confirm.

The River Brett needs more people to speak up for it...

A full-page ad in last month’s issue called for the proposed artificial pitch at the Layham Road sportsground to go ahead without further delay.

It’s true that the pitch project was put on hold while the council waits for the Football Foundation (the main funder) to confirm if and when it can provide an infill material that won’t, unlike rubber crumb, risk polluting the river and the local environment.

But another reason, just as significant, emerged when the council was told, very late in the day, that a full-size pitch won’t fit on the plot(!)

Mr Nightingale cited the position statement by the Sports and Play Contractors Association (SAPCA), which mentions ‘independent’ studies showing ‘up to 98% of leakage can be prevented’. The only study they cite is one paid for by the artificial turf industry. Their position is not supported by the majority of scientific research.

Mr Nightingale also said that Sudbury council had not objected to the 3G pitch planned by AFC Sudbury. In fact, the council said they would only support the application if certain issues were addressed, one of them being a risk assessment of the potential environmental pollution from rubber crumb infill. Rubber crumb is ground up old car tyres. Unfortunately, it leaks from pitches into the environment through several routes. It has been shown to be a major source of intentionally-introduced microplastic pollution. Each pitch requires 15 tonnes of infill top up each year.

Microplastic pollution has been shown to damage wildlife, and the environment. Waterways are particularly prone to this sort of pollution. The EU is about to, hopefully, ban rubber crumb for these reasons. If readers agree that, whatever the claimed benefits of an artificial pitch, it is not worth risking polluting the river in order to get one, then please make your voice heard. The River Brett needs more people to speak up for it.

Starbucks planning application, Weavers Meadow

The deadline has now passed for commenting on the planning application to build a Starbucks drivethrough facility on the land between Weavers Meadow and the A1071 Ipswich Road, accessed via Ellen Aldous Avenue (case reference numbers DC/23/01962 and DC/23/01963). You can still make your views on the proposal known by contacting the Chief Planning Officer, Philip Isbell, using the email address Philip.Isbell@babergh.gov.uk, or sending a letter to the Chief Planning Officer, Babergh District Council, Endeavour House, 8 Russell Road, Ipswich IP1 2BX. The application will be heard by the BDC Planning Committee because the land belongs to the council: the date for this meeting is not yet known, but members of the public will be able to attend.

Play equipment upgrade planned at Sarah Rand Road, Weavers Meadow

Residents have contacted us asking for improved play facilities at the park on Sarah Rand Road, on Phase 1A of the Weavers Meadow development. The BDC Communities team has agreed to support the project with funding and design ideas. Formal ownership of that piece of land needs to be transferred from the developer, Persimmon, to BDC before work can start, but it is expected that the transfer will take place as soon as planning conditions have been met.

Summer holiday activities and free family fun days BDC is promoting a summer holiday activity programme to encourage everyone to stay active and healthy during the school break. Our holiday, activities and food (HAF) programme, funded by the Department for Education, ensures children in need, for example those eligible for free school meals, continue to receive support through holidays - with places also available to book by others looking to entertain their youngsters locally for a small fee.

Hadleigh also enjoyed a free family fun day on Friday 28 July at East House park, one of a series of free family fun days across the districts offering everything from climbing walls to archery, and from face-painting to sports. EV charging points being installed in car parks Works are getting underway to install 28 new 22kW EV charging points in several council car parks in Babergh and Mid Suffolk, thanks to a £300K grant from the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV). Each charging point will be able to charge two vehicles at the same time, significantly improving access to chargers for local residents and visitors. Hadleigh’s charging points will be located in the Magdalen Road car park Locations have been chosen specifically to provide an off-street EV charging option for residents living nearby, who currently use on-street parking spaces. However, they will also be available for all other car park users. Their aim is to help cut carbon emissions, reduce air pollution, and encourage greater numbers of people to shift to more environmentally sustainable modes of transport across the district.

Works, being carried out by Suffolk-based firm Anglia Car Charging, have been phased to ensure as minimal disruption as possible, and will continue throughout this year. Visitors are advised to refer to specific signage in each car park for information about when works will be taking place.

Hadleigh welcomes the Tour of Britain The UK’s biggest professional cycle race, the men’s Tour of Britain, is heading to Suffolk on Thursday 07 September. It’s recently been announced that Hadleigh will feature a sprint stage, probably along the High Street; plans are afoot to celebrate the event by involving local businesses and community groups. Full route details are due to be announced soon, and will be shown on the council’s social media pages.

National Grid pylons consultation National Grid has launched its latest public consultation on plans for a high-voltage power line across East Anglia, including Babergh. The Norwich to Tilbury project has been opposed by BDC

Anti-social behaviour awareness Babergh’s community safety team has been out in our market towns in the past month, sharing information and answering questions from residents, working alongside partners in tenancy management, environmental health and officers from Suffolk Police. The team spent the day at Morrisons on Monday 03 July.

Pykenham Way & Timperley Road green spaces Jane joined Cllr Kathryn Grandon and Babergh District Council Tenant Engagement Officers to speak to residents on Timperley Road about how their area could be improved, as there is funding available from the Greater Spaces Better Places Fund. These funds can be used for things like benches or tree planting. We also visited the communal grassed area at the centre of Pykenham Way, which could also benefit from this funding. Residents in these areas will be contacted for their thoughts and ideas as to how this money could be spent by a Tenant Engagement Officer in due course. If you live in either of these areas and have any ideas about how your neighbourhood could benefit, please contact Jane using the details below.

Locality awards Each BDC councillor has a modest sum to spend on smallscale projects planned by local community groups. If you’d like to apply for an award, contact your ward councillor. Further details about what sort of projects are eligible, examples of successful bids, and the application form which needs to be filled in by the ward councillor and the organisation, are at: www.babergh.gov.uk/communities/grants-and-funding .

C. A. Building All General

Gary Girling 1951-2023

Gary Girling, President of Hadleigh Cricket Club, sadly passed away on June 21st at the age of 72. To call Gary a legend of the club would be true, but it would still somehow understate his impact and contribution to the club over nearly 60 years. As player, captain, groundsman, chairman and president (and those were just his official roles), few people have served it so well, for so long. I called him the father of our club because he was the ever-present figure in all our lives at HCC; the person everyone looked up to.

He grew up in Upper Layham and was one of the first children to attend the new secondary school in Highlands Road. Mel and Roy Plumbly remember him as one of their first students. His father Peter played for the club and Gary was already a regular member of the 2nds or ‘A’ team at 14 years old in 1965. The scorebook for that year shows that he batted 12 times with a highest score of 29 not out, so was already showing great promise. He could bowl too, and once took 7-22 in a game. By the age of 17 he was in the 1st team, scored his maiden century at 21 and by the mid-1970s he was part of arguably Hadleigh’s greatest ever side, which won the Suffolk League. Amongst the likes of David Clifford, Richard English and the aforementioned Roy Plumbly. Gary went on to captain the 1st team in the late 80s and early 1990s, leading the team to promotion. He was a natural skipper, well-liked by his players. He played to win but first and foremost wanted to enjoy the game and when it was done have a drink with his team-mates and the opposition. He made friends wherever he played. In the early 2000s he took over the 2nds, assembling a ‘Dad’s Army’ of wily veterans and enjoying more success. Amongst this band of late 50-somethings was John Beale, who as was his wont christened Gary ‘Horse’ (GG – Gee Gees, now it makes sense!).

Gary finally hung up his boots in 2007, after scoring nearly 12,000 runs and taking 215 catches for Hadleigh with those incredibly reliable bucket hands.

From a very early age he was involved in the running of the club and its social side. He became groundsman in 1972 and remained so for over 40 years. Several generations of players knew nothing else but Gary on the roller, tending his beloved square and outfield. It was his pride and joy. The knowledge he had of ground matters and machinery was legendary. He was always to be found at the heart of the action at social and fundraising events, of which there were many in his younger days – dinner dances, summer parties and fetes, and he was always part of the team setting them up and clearing them away. He directed these operations like his ground working parties – you always looked to Gary to give you a job. But he always found time for those in need, as our long-standing former Treasurer Tim Ryder remembers. “We were putting final touches to the decorations before a Dinner Dance at the New Town Hall. As a young 18 or 19 year old I said that I didn’t know how to waltz (the band would always play a few old time dances for the oldies!). Gary (still in his boiler suit) then proceeded to give me a dance lesson. Not sure if I was the male or female, but I was taken around the dance floor several times!”

With his playing days over Gary took over as club Chairman. One of the highlights of this time was our Bicentenary season in 2010. From leading the celebrations at a gala dinner (just like the old days), to going to Lord’s for a

match at the Nursery Ground, to even being interviewed on Sky Sports, Gary took great pride in all that happened that special summer. He was always looking to see the club improve, as his successor and ViceChair at the time Dave Mann recalls. “He was a massive help to me because I was pretty adamant that the club needed to change the pavilion and extend it and bring it up to 21st-century standards. Of course, these things don’t come cheaply and a lot of Gary’s generation may have thought ‘what is this vicechairman going to do? He’s going to bankrupt the club’, all of that, but Gary was brilliant, he smoothed the way and made sure all of those good people on the committee supported the project.”

Gary won an ECB OSCA for his services as a cricket volunteer, and in 2015 became our President. This was a challenging time for Gary, as difficulties with his health meant he was unable to look after his beloved Meadow in his retirement as he had hoped. But he still did everything he could for the club, watching as many games as possible, attending committee meetings and social events, making sure his annual Presidents Day was a success. Our Chairman Simon Gladwell summed it up perfectly when he said that Gary was a friend of everyone who played at Friars Road. “He welcomed and introduced me to the club and showed genuine kindness which made a lasting impression. He was a gentleman of the game.”

We will miss him deeply, as will his many friends in Suffolk cricket, and he will always be remembered. Our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.

'It All Kicks Off On Sunday' by Frank Payne, the eighty-nine year old author of two books entitled 'Here Today 'Goon' Tomorrow' and 'Well Worth Waiting For' has completed his third, and probably, last book. The new title is 'It All Kicks Off On Sunday', and chronicles the myriad of incidents occurring during his forty two seasons as a qualified East Anglian referee. It will be available both nationally and locally in late September. Frank finally retired at seventytwo, having been threatened, sworn at, kicked, punched, floored and hit by thrown coins. Both he and his family subjected to life threatening injury on and off the field of play. Yet, seventeen years after hanging up his whistle, he would willingly go back tomorrow if it were humanly possible. Royalties from local sales will once again be given to our local small animal charity, SESAW. So far, money raised by selling both of his previous books locally, is fast approaching £2,500. He intends to do the same when the new book is published. Frank says "I don't imagine there are many octogenarians who become authors so late in life. It was never my intention, but with my family involved physically with SESAW, I was persuaded to have a go. I found at eighty-seven it was far easier to look back than forward. I also knew how SESAW was suffering financially due to Covid 19. The rest you know.

The Clopton Rose Ceremony

There is a long-standing tradition for Hadleigh to pay its rent to the Clopton Family by way of a ceremonial payment of a single red rose to the tomb of William Clopton resting in Long Melford's Holy Trinity Church.

In 1436 William Clopton, Lord of Toppesfield Manor, granted the town of Hadleigh the guildhall and market land, for the rent of one mark a year. This rent was later converted to a single rose. In 1984 Jean Clopton came across that the rent was many years overdue and asked Hadleigh to pay up! The people of Hadleigh duly did and have done so every year since. This payment is still considered one of the oldest rents payable anywhere in the country.

On Sunday 25th June, our Mayor Gordon McLeod visited Long Melford to continue the tradition of presenting a single rose to the Chair of Long Melford Parish Council to accept on behalf of the Clopton Family, with thanks for the Guildhall and land in Hadleigh.

The service and ceremony was live streamed to the Cloptons now residing in America.

Hadleigh Hares Athletics Club

Friday evenings have been a busy time from May through to July with the Friday 5 series being held across Suffolk and Essex. Six 5 mile races where held for Seniors and distances of between 1km and 2km for the juniors. The first race of the season was held at Kirton hosted by the Felixstowe Road Runners. Conditions couldn’t have been better, sunshine and a cool breeze. On leaving the start runners had to navigate a rather gravely lane, which slowed the pace down, but then onto the open road! We had 8 seniors representing the club, 4 men and 4 women. Stuart Price and Aden Bell stormed in at 9th and 10th place respectively. 10 Juniors ran their respective races and got off to an excellent start.

Sudbury hosted the second race in the series. This is a tough course with a couple of big hills that seem to go on forever! But saying that, it is a very pretty run and of course, once at the top of the hill, it’s all downhill from then on. Stuart Price upped his pace and came a fantastic 7th place.

Onto the third race of the series which was held In Framlingham. A super venue and a great atmosphere. Our 11 juniors kicked off the evening running superbly in their races. Hugo Gunning coming 3rd overall in the U9 category. 9 Seniors ran the undulating course with another record broken by Claire Jacobs finishing 1st lady and 7th overall. She also broke the club 5 mile record finishing with a time of 28.22. Also, a night for personal bests by Jo Sargent, Belinda Godbold and Nathalie Hooper.

The following Friday Saint Edmund Pacers were hosting the race starting in Nowton Park. Historically it is always hot when this race is run, fortunately not the 30 degrees we had last year! After a lap around the park the route took us on some quiet Suffolk roads, which thankfully, were nicely shaded. The Juniors did us proud with Hugo Gunning, Morgan Davies and Kyan McNeil coming in the top 10 for their age group.

In complete contrast, the next race was held at Haugley Park, hosted by the Stowmarket Striders. A cool, cloudy, and wet evening. Some runners would say this was perfect. Aden Bell kept his good form and finished with an excellent time of 28:43.

Finally, the last race of the series. With over 400 runners taking part due to the flat nature of the course. 10 Seniors ran and finished with amazing results. Claire Jacobs was second female runner across the line and 1st in her age group with a PB of 27:53! Absolutely outstanding. A personal best for Crystal Murry who had been getting progressively faster with each race. It was wonderful to see trophies won by our Juniors Morgan Davies and Poppy Humphrey who were second in their age groups.

As a Club we have a lot to celebrate. We came 10th overall out of 57 clubs and the ladies team were 6th out of 44.

Congratulations to Jo Sargent, Nathalie Hooper, Belinda Godbold and Stuart Hunt who ran all six races. Fantastic running by all the seniors and juniors with great support and camaraderie at all races.
