Pre-Prep and Prep School edition Friday 17 June 2022 Summer Term

Acting Head of Prep School Message Mr G Thomas There has been a wonderful atmosphere in the school this week, full of joy and positivity. I have loved observing the pupils play so happily on the school fields each breaktime and was delighted to watch over 150 of them all, voluntarily, take part in a tennis and cricket festival last Saturday morning. It, too, has been wonderful to welcome many parents to school this week and I have been so pleased with the character demonstrated by our pupils. Observing the Pre-Prep children really challenge themselves during their sports day was a particular highlight, whilst watching over 30 Prep pupils take part in a thrilling battle of the band competition reminded us of all of the importance of allowing our pupils the creative licence to express themselves. I was most proud however, when welcoming our new Year 3 pupils for the induction afternoon on Monday and the way in which the Year 5 pupils engaged and genuinely cared for our new cohort. It was brilliant. In my conversations with the pupils this week, I have reminded them that in such a richly diverse community, that we all have different skills and gifts. Some of us are highly driven whereas others prefer to go with the flow. Some of us are very outgoing whilst others more naturally reserved. Whatever our gifts, we should all support and celebrate each other. With Sports Day, Summer Concerts and school plays to come this term, this will be even more evident, and so I have asked the pupils to ensure that they maintain their compassion and humility to help keep inflating everyone’s balloon. Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

Music Battle of the Bands The standard of musicianship and lofty levels of entertainment and excitement provided to us by seven group finalists of Battle of the Bands was phenomenal! Drawing from Years 3 – 6, our finalists were expertly adjudicated by Mr Thomas and Mr Swindell. We heard songs from across the decades, all chosen by the pupils themselves and rehearsed independently at home. The performers encouraged audience participation, from flag waving to clapping and singing along, and the charismatic lead singers were expertly supported by accompanying instruments. The pupils thought deeply about their musical arrangements, ensuring textural and dynamic variety throughout the songs. We all went away on a tremendous high – well done to all those who participated!

School Community Year 6 Portland Residential

The weather was bright and fresh on Tuesday morning when the Year 6 pupils met in the coach park to begin their journey to the beautiful Isle of Portland. Both parents and pupils were excited for what was promised to be an action-packed week of coastal fun. After a smooth trip down to the coast we were welcomed by our instructors, who were quick to get us squeezed into wetsuits, or out on an orienteering adventure. The activities planned for us ranged from hiking to raft building, and from abseiling to coasteering. Whether in the water or climbing up a rock face, we were so lucky to enjoy fantastic weather, ensuring the climate matched our positive mindsets. The activities the pupils undertook gave them the opportunity to really challenge themselves, pushing through to the edge of their comfort zone, and often into the unknown. Whilst pupils were stretched when out and about, they also faced challenges when in their accommodation. Learning to help each other, be mindful of others, and have the discipline to keep their rooms clean and tidy. It’s clear that all pupils were able to experience unknown waters, grow as individuals, and learn something about themselves. We want to say a huge thank you to Portland Outdoor Centre, the teachers, and the pupils for the most fantastic week of memory making.

School Community 7+ Taster Afternoon Year 2 pupils had a fantastic time on Monday during their ‘move up’ afternoon. They met their new Year 3 teachers and Year 5 buddies, who took them for a tour of the school and explained about all the wonderful things they should look forward to. With their new classmates, the pupils played team games and found out about the musical instruments they can learn to play.

Sports Pre-Prep Sports Day Well done to all the Pre-Prep pupils who took part in Sports Day on Wednesday 15 June. The pupils were a credit to themselves and gave their all throughout the morning. They were totally engaged in all the activities and were very supportive to one another. Well done to everyone that took part!
