Pre-Prep and Prep School edition Friday 24 June 2022 Summer Term

Acting Head of Prep School’s Message Mr G Thomas We end another wonderful week in the Prep and Pre-Prep School in slightly sweltering heat but full of excitement after an action packed few days. Our Year 3 pupils took part in an incredibly informative and enjoyable trip to Hazard Alley in which they learnt many life lessons about how to maximise their own and others’ safety in their future lives. Year 6 pupils also enjoyed a fantastic transition day in the Senior School where they met new friends and I was delighted to learn from those that I spoke to about how much the event has really helped them to feel settled about their move next year. Similarly, it was brilliant to welcome many parents as part of our Year 1 and 2 Pre-Prep Sports day and I was so pleased with the enthusiasm and energy that the pupils demonstrated. A particular highlight of this week, however, has been the way in which the school community has come together to support and celebrate each other. Walking through the hall on Wednesday morning, I was delighted to observe Year 11 and 12 boys, many of whom are ex Prep and Pre-Prep, accompanying our Prep boys in the delivery of their Bugsy Malone performance. I was equally impressed by the way in which pupils voluntarily supported their peers during their breaktime when watching Battle of the Bands and how boys were so encouraging of their friends during the instrumental scheme concerts. In such a busy environment, it is easy to forget the importance of taking the time to praise each other. As I overheard one boy say to another after his Year 3 assembly on refugees, “We really are one family, aren’t we?” As always, the boys do us proud. With my best wishes for a sunny and relaxing weekend.

Pupils will then be asked to rate their preference of instrument from 1-12. Their preferences, alongside the results of their assessments, will inform which instrument they will be learning during the Year 5 Instrumental Scheme. Pupils who already learn one of the above instruments should remember to bring in a short piece/extract of music they have prepared to play to Mr Gee and Miss Gozzard in the Seldon Hall so that their level of experience can be assessed and they can be placed in the correct Chamber group for next year.

Music Year 1 musical performance We are very proud of Louis in Year 1 who starred in his first piano chamber concert. He performed Arabesque by Burgmuller and was accompanied by a string quartet. Louis had a lot of fun and enjoyed playing music together with the string quartet.

Music Instrumental Concert Y5 and Y3 It was wonderful to see so many parents attend the Y5 and Y3 Instrumental scheme concert on Monday. It involved an unprecedented number of children, many of them playing with great emotional maturity and confidence. The first year of learning an instrument is always the hardest; from next year there will be many other exciting opportunities such as ensembles, solo assemblies, Lunchtime Lives and larger scale concert performances.

School Community Year 2 trip to Whipsnade Year 2 had a fantastic end of the year trip to Whipsnade. They learned about animal habitats and took an active part in a “Fur, feathers and scales” workshop, classifying animals into their groups. The highlight was handling real animal artefacts and enjoying the amazing outdoor playground. As always, the boys were thirsty for knowledge, polite and courteous - true ambassadors for Habs.

Chicks arrival The Prep School were lucky to have some special visitors. After we watched them hatch in their incubator, we got the chance to hold and pet them. They liked some boys so much that they didn’t want to leave their hands!

School Community Hazard Alley Safety Centre Year 3 spent a fabulous morning at Hazard Alley Safety Centre. They experienced real life scenarios in a model town such as making a 999 call, safely crossing a road and how to stay in indoor and outdoor situations.

School Community Staff news We sadly say goodbye to Mrs Siddiqui our Teaching Assistant and After School Care assistant. We thank her for her hard work and dedication with the boys. Mrs Siddiqui joins John Lyons School in Harrow as a Learning Support Assistant and we wish her all the very best for the future.

Student news Riaan 3MJ was chosen as for the coin toss for a match with Middlesex CC and Hampshire Hawks. He is pictured here with Middlesex and Hampshire Captains.

Student news Last week Xander Reese 6RP competed in the Aylesbury Grade 1 Tennis Europe international competition in the 12u category winning six out of seven matches to win the Consolation Draw Final. Hard fought, tough competition under challenging conditions - notably the intense heat! Well done Xander!

Sports Year 4 Tennis Team Crowned Herts Schools Champions Well done to the Year 4 tennis team (pictured) who took part in the Hertfordshire Schools Year 4 tennis tournament at St Albans Tennis club on Thursday afternoon. They all played brilliantly and the team, split into two pairs, managed to acquire the most points in their matches against 4 other schools meaning that the boys were crowned Year 4 Hertfordshire Champions. Well done to all the team on a fantastic achievement.
